Latest / The Gill Athletics Track and Field Connections Podcast / BONUS: The Podcast About Podcasts – Featuring Athletics LLC
Transcript
- 0:00It's bonus time. Here we go.
- 0:02This month in February of 2025, we are doing a podcast about
- 0:06podcast. We want to introduce you to
- 0:08other track and field themed podcasts that are out there that
- 0:11might be great for your listening pleasure.
- 0:14So all month we're introducing a new podcast each and every day,
- 0:17showing you who they are, what they are, how they are, why they
- 0:20got started, and even their favorite episodes and most
- 0:23popular. And hopefully this adds to your
- 0:26podcast listening library. So here we go.
- 0:28Let's get started with today's podcast about podcast.
- 0:32All right, let's get started with this one.
- 0:34So why don't we start with give us an introduction of you, maybe
- 0:39a 30,000 foot level of who you are and the name of your show.
- 0:44My name is Marissa Shu. I am currently the vertical and
- 0:47combined events coach at TCU. I am.
- 0:50I call myself the moderator because I think I am that most
- 0:53more often than not of the show for Athletics LLC.
- 0:58Awesome. And we're, you know, as you guys
- 1:00are watching and listening to these bonus episodes, we're
- 1:03talking about podcasts, this show, The Athletics LLC, a
- 1:06little unique, I don't know. That actually probably describes
- 1:08a lot of the people on the panel that we'll talk about here soon
- 1:11as well. But they're a YouTube show, so
- 1:13not you. You're probably listening to us
- 1:15right now on a podcast app. You're not going to find them
- 1:17there, but you are going to hop over to youtube.com and just
- 1:20search Athletics LLC and it'll pop up there.
- 1:23So let's talk about Athletics LLC and hopefully maybe there's
- 1:27people that are listening right now didn't know your show was
- 1:29going on and they need to be checking out this show.
- 1:31So let's start with what do you focus on?
- 1:34You know, every show's a little different.
- 1:36They focus on the athletes and the track meet.
- 1:38Some focus on coaches. Some focus on the political side
- 1:42of track and field. What does Athletic LLC focus on?
- 1:45So what we focus on is the layer just beneath all of that, you
- 1:49know, a little more on the educational side, not quite like
- 1:51coaches education, but you know, what does it take to hit the
- 1:54standards to get into World Championships?
- 1:57Why is it set that way? What are some of the logistics
- 1:59that you need to be aware of, you know, when you're trying to
- 2:03navigate the international waters, NCAA waters?
- 2:06You know, we don't necessarily go to age group just because of
- 2:08a lot of us on the panel are collegians coaches.
- 2:12So we just try to stay away from recruiting stuff.
- 2:14But things like that, drawing on experiences and just really
- 2:19highlighting the things that the water cooler talk that no one
- 2:22really talks about. So we we do stay away from the
- 2:26chitchat and and the rumors. We try to keep it very factual
- 2:30and if we're not in the bed, we don't talk about it.
- 2:34Well, I like that's a good way of like check yourself if what
- 2:37should we be talking about this and I like that a lot.
- 2:40Talk to us about your style. You talked about you're the
- 2:43moderator. So is this a panel?
- 2:45Is it consistent people who are they?
- 2:47Talk to us about that kind of style of the show.
- 2:49Got it. So we call ourselves the tiles
- 2:53being on Zoom. So we refer, I refer to
- 2:55everybody on the tile, you know, in its first starts, we had
- 3:00coach, Coach Holloway from Florida.
- 3:03Sorry, I don't know why I just drew a blank myself.
- 3:06Charles Ryan from San Jose State and then Chris Huffman, who no
- 3:10longer coaches collegiately but does coach in the pro ranks.
- 3:14When Coach Ryan was having his baby, we called in Coach Cream
- 3:21St. Thompson as his fill in and then
- 3:23he just never went away. And we love it that way.
- 3:26So it's it's been a great addition, you know, in that we
- 3:31do kind of set up as a platform for panelists because we do have
- 3:36guests, for lack of a better way to say it.
- 3:40We kind of do around the horn ish where I, the moderator will
- 3:44bring up topics, help navigate the conversation completely stop
- 3:48the conversation at times or, you know, I sometimes can't hold
- 3:53my tongue and just chime in. So that's where everyone's
- 3:56blessed with my two cents. But you know, that's how we kind
- 4:00of go. The biggest thing that we wanted
- 4:03to make sure that everybody got from the show itself is our
- 4:06experiences. We're not speaking on
- 4:09speculation at all. All of us, if are talking from
- 4:12our experience, and if not, we're really drawing on
- 4:15experiences very close to what we're talking to or talking
- 4:19about. And what's your average length?
- 4:21I know they sometimes can vary, but what's the average length of
- 4:23a show? We try, emphasize, try to keep
- 4:27it about to an hour, hour 15. There is a moment there when
- 4:31we're getting up to two hours. And I was like, all right, I got
- 4:33to ring my own back in. Like we came in, I was writing
- 4:36topics down and I literally had minutes and I would start typing
- 4:40in the chat, like wrap it up, wrap it up.
- 4:42And then we got to stop topics that were really impactful.
- 4:46So I let the conversation slow and then I had a couple people
- 4:50tell us that we're getting along.
- 4:52So like heard, when the audience is saying something, you got to
- 4:55listen. Imagine that a bunch of track
- 4:57guys talking and you go for a long time.
- 5:00That's that's so surprising here.
- 5:03When did you guys start and why did you guys start?
- 5:06What was the motivation behind that?
- 5:07So when how long you guys been going on and what was the
- 5:10original motivation for it? Our first episode aired the
- 5:13third week of April during COVID, so 2020.
- 5:17So we've been in existence for a while now.
- 5:19We're currently in season 5. It's been a minute.
- 5:21It's pretty crazy. None of us thought it would last
- 5:23this long. Not that we didn't want it to,
- 5:25but we just didn't realize it would.
- 5:28We started because Chris Huffins and Mike Holloway and Mouse
- 5:32Holloway did Lucius and Lamar via their phone calls.
- 5:39So as we first started that those were their names.
- 5:42We all have stage names, appropriately stage names.
- 5:46And so that was theirs and that is theirs.
- 5:48We've now evolved to Sir Luscious and Lamar always makes
- 5:53a name up whatever. But they were, you know, on
- 5:56their daily phone calls or weekly phone calls, they were
- 5:59having these assumed characters and they were giving
- 6:01perspectives so they could speak more freely.
- 6:04Not in their own shoes, right? So that's how it started.
- 6:07And that those things started happening 10 years prior to the
- 6:10show. And then so during COVID, we
- 6:13were all so bored that they said, OK, let's do this in life.
- 6:19And then me being who I am, they're like, we need her to
- 6:24make sure we stay inside the ring.
- 6:26And so that evolved into that. And then we need a little bit of
- 6:28controversy. So who else better than Charles
- 6:31Ryan to assume that role? You've been going now for five,
- 6:38going on 6 years. That alone is amazing.
- 6:40By the way, Has it kept its original idea informed
- 6:43throughout like what you guys did?
- 6:46Does season 1 look a lot like season upcoming Season 6?
- 6:52It does, but it doesn't at its root.
- 6:54We always try to keep like educating others or giving
- 6:57everybody knowledge at least in one part of piece of the show.
- 7:01We have evolved because track is evolved.
- 7:04You know, we've added so many different things in the track
- 7:06and field world, coaching, things like that.
- 7:10So we try to hit all pots, make it so that everyone gets what
- 7:15they need entertainment wise as well as you know, in what do
- 7:18they call it? Info, info, educational.
- 7:22Infotainment. Yes.
- 7:26Entertainment. Yeah.
- 7:28So you kept your original motivation of and goal set of
- 7:32what you have been doing. Good love that, you know, in
- 7:34business. So like here at Gil Athletics,
- 7:37we serve a lot of people, you know, moms and dads will buy
- 7:39equipment from us athletic directors, but our ideal
- 7:42customer, like who we think about when we make products,
- 7:45market products, etcetera, our track coaches, high school and
- 7:48college. What is your ideal listener
- 7:52profile? So there's a lot of people that
- 7:53may listen, athletes, coaches, moms, dads, fans, they may
- 7:57listen, but who are you ideally targeted?
- 8:00Who's out there listening right now going, oh wait, that's me,
- 8:02but I should go check this out? So ideally our target audience
- 8:06is coaches of all rings, new senior, everybody in between
- 8:13that, athletes who are transitioning and wanting to
- 8:16know the ropes and trying to figure out how to navigate this
- 8:19thing that we call our passion of crack coaching track and
- 8:21field. And then the novice person who
- 8:26maybe sees the posts on Instagram or sees the little
- 8:29blurbs on YouTube or wherever it might be, but doesn't quite know
- 8:33the context behind it. So that's who we try to target.
- 8:37That's the ideal listener profile.
- 8:40I love that. What has been, you know, you sit
- 8:42in a very unique seat there not only as moderator, but you are a
- 8:46coach, you are a peer amongst them and your guest.
- 8:48What for you, what's been your favorite episode?
- 8:51And maybe a different way, another way of asking that
- 8:53question is also maybe what has been your most popular episode?
- 8:57So I think, I think mainly because of how long it's been,
- 9:00our first episode is got over 1100 views.
- 9:03So I thought that was pretty cool.
- 9:06There's some episodes here and there that have upwards to 8 to
- 9:09900 views, one of them being the episode with Tim Hall and Abby
- 9:12Steiner. Any episode with John Drummond
- 9:15gets a lot of clicks. You know, we've had auto a
- 9:18couple times. We've had a lot of different
- 9:25viewership. So on average we average around
- 9:29300 to 400 clicks. And then on a, on a spike when
- 9:33we hit a, you know, we've had, we've had some conversations
- 9:37that have been clipped and reused and those get anywhere
- 9:42between 600 to 800. Which one's been your favorite,
- 9:46whether it was a a guest or something that you were able to
- 9:49chime in on or something you learned, What's been been your
- 9:51favorite there? The most memorable is the
- 9:55episode with Brooks Johnson. So many pieces so and there, you
- 10:00know, don't get me wrong, we've had episodes with Jackie Jordan
- 10:03or Kersey. Just so many names to be so
- 10:07grateful for John Anderson, that was another good 10 Goodness
- 10:12gracious. But Brooks memorable for so many
- 10:16different reasons. So many different reasons.
- 10:20But because you just, you got the real Brooks and you know
- 10:25most people did when they conversed with him, but we have
- 10:29it for eternity on an episode, so that is one of my favourites.
- 10:34Love that. Yeah.
- 10:34That that's, that might be one of my favourites as well because
- 10:37of the guest, you know? Exactly.
- 10:39Loved him. What have you.
- 10:41You know, you sit in a unique spot.
- 10:42You've been with the show from day one.
- 10:45You operate in the background of what the show does.
- 10:48Like you're, you're helping write notes and subjects and
- 10:50things like that as well. So you're doing kind of the
- 10:52producing side of it as well. Even though he calls himself the
- 10:54executive producer. What what have you learned as
- 10:59being the moderator of the host? And I don't necessarily mean
- 11:02that of like, oh, I learned how to become a better coach or
- 11:04things like that. Maybe it's you learn how to
- 11:06become a better moderator, a better interview or a better
- 11:11writer of notes. I don't know.
- 11:12Maybe a better probably not a better picker of who's going to
- 11:15place at the USATF and NCAA champions.
- 11:18Probably not that you guys aren't great at that, but doing
- 11:21this for, you know, half a decade.
- 11:23Well, how have you grown as the host of the podcast?
- 11:27I've definitely grown in regards to how I communicate and the
- 11:29words I use. Viewers, the viewership likes to
- 11:33tell you when you just don't use the right word.
- 11:36And so you, you get better at that.
- 11:40You know, most recently I, I'm big on presentation and how one
- 11:44presents oneself. And there was an episode that I
- 11:47actually was exhausted and about to get sick.
- 11:51And there was someone who commented like, Oh, she, what is
- 11:53she doing? She didn't pay attention.
- 11:55She was half laying down. And I, I, I, it stung for a
- 11:58second. I got a little busy and I was
- 12:00like, but they're right, right. And so when you get called out,
- 12:03you have to be more aware of what you're doing.
- 12:04And, and this does go quote UN quote on the Internet.
- 12:07So knowing how to present myself and convey my messages very
- 12:13clearly is what I've definitely gotten away as a mom.
- 12:17As a female, I already I'm good at reading out what's coming
- 12:20before other people can foresee that and that's only been
- 12:24enhanced since so. You know, and you know, choose
- 12:28someone who's known you and known you through a journey,
- 12:31meaning through podcast. You know, you, you're our first
- 12:33two time guest on our podcast here at Go Connections.
- 12:36But through Coach's collab and now this as well, you know, it
- 12:39is on the Internet. And so right now, someone can go
- 12:41back and watch episode #1 and see your very first time, and
- 12:44then go see episode 500 or whatever and see the journey,
- 12:48how you've become a much, much better communicator.
- 12:50And your confidence level there was a little bit it felt like
- 12:55you didn't feel like you belonged.
- 12:57Oh, absolutely. For a bit and now it's like Oh
- 12:59yeah no, no, I'm I'm a peer I know where I sit with everybody
- 13:02here but you're a peer so I just I appreciate seeing that journey
- 13:06in you as well all right last two questions first one's super
- 13:08easy. Where can they find you They
- 13:10can't find you on the app, but again, you can be found on
- 13:12YouTube. This is a YouTube show, which I
- 13:14think makes it more unique a little harder.
- 13:16You got to go to YouTube instead of just a simple podcast app.
- 13:19So definitely go to youtube.com and just search.
- 13:21Literally if you just enter athletics SLC, it pops right up
- 13:24and you can see all those episodes.
- 13:26My second question, the last question here, you know, again,
- 13:30we're calling this a podcast because it is on, but it is on
- 13:33YouTube. Most podcast listeners listen to
- 13:35a lots of different podcasts and maybe you listen or watch a
- 13:38couple of different YouTube shows.
- 13:39What is your favorite podcast that's not track related?
- 13:45That doesn't exist. It just doesn't exist.
- 13:51So I'd love to have an answer. I don't.
- 13:53That is fair. I love that.
- 13:56Sorry. No worries guys, that you're
- 13:58listening right now. So here's my challenge.
- 14:00Press pause because we're done with this episode here and go
- 14:02over to youtube.com and just search Athletics LLC.
- 14:05And probably for this one, I would say most of the time I'm
- 14:08going to tell you to go back and look at the backlog.
- 14:09I think on this one, I'm going to tell you to watch the latest
- 14:11episode and then go back and look if you see some guest or
- 14:16topics again, they talk about world champs.
- 14:18How do we pick? They've had great episodes on
- 14:20relays and we can all know what what happens, good and bad
- 14:23there. But go back and maybe pick an
- 14:26episode or two that has a title that interests you and then
- 14:28subscribe. That's the real easy part.
- 14:30And then, you know, every week when they do publish their
- 14:32episodes still on on Fridays we're publishing.
- 14:35Yeah. So every Friday when they
- 14:36publish, you'll know it's live and it's a great, great thing to
- 14:39watch as you're traveling to and from a track meet as well.
- 14:42So they talk about a lot of important topics.
- 14:44So that's my challenge. Go to youtube.com right now,
- 14:46search Athletics, LLC hit that subscribe button and check it
- 14:49out. You'll you'll be better for it.
- 14:50Thank you so much, Marissa. Thank you.
