- 1:05Speaker 1: his compassion for us never fails, and that He has
- 1:08Speaker 1: a great faithfulness toward us in every regard. Now, if

- 1:13Speaker 1: to recommend it to a friend, you can hear this
- 1:16Speaker 1: program anytime online at Talknetwork Radio dot com. Well, now
- 1:21Speaker 1: here's Richard with today's reflection.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Therefore, as you have received Christ, Jesus the Lord, walked
- 1:29Speaker 2: in him, rooted and built up in him, and established
- 1:34Speaker 2: in the faith, just as you were taught and overflowing
- 1:39Speaker 2: with thankfulness, be careful that no one takes you captive
- 1:45Speaker 2: through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition, based
- 1:51Speaker 2: on the elemental forces of the world, and not based
- 1:55Speaker 2: on Christ. For in Him the entire of God and
- 2:02Speaker 2: his nature dwells bodily, and you have been filled by
- 2:08Speaker 2: Him who is the head over every ruler and authority Colossians,
- 2:16Speaker 2: chapter two and verses six through ten. You know, as
- 2:23Speaker 2: we have been studying through the different applications in scripture,
- 2:31Speaker 2: we have found that there are basically two enemies of
- 2:39Speaker 2: the spirit. The first is one that we all recognize.
- 2:45Speaker 2: We refer to that demonic influence, the ruler of what
- 2:52Speaker 2: is called the dark recesses of this world. We call
- 2:57Speaker 2: him Satan, has many descriptions. But there is yet another
- 3:05Speaker 2: great enemy that we must also conquer. And it is
- 3:13Speaker 2: for us to recognize who we are and who our
- 3:19Speaker 2: enemies are. And the result of this is the overcoming
- 3:26Speaker 2: power of the indwelling Holy Spirit. You see, as we
- 3:34Speaker 2: just read in Colossians chapter two and verse ten, it says,
- 3:42Speaker 2: as we can see, you have been filled by Him
- 3:49Speaker 2: who is the head over every ruler and authority. And
- 3:55Speaker 2: so if in Christ, the fullness of God dwells in
- 4:02Speaker 2: bodily form, and we have been filled by Him who
- 4:08Speaker 2: is the head over every ruler and authority, then we,
- 4:14Speaker 2: in his power, have the same ability to overcome those
- 4:22Speaker 2: same forces. So, as we were talking about the two enemies,
- 4:29Speaker 2: let's illustrate this by a part of what Andrew Murray
- 4:35Speaker 2: says in his book Experiencing the Holy Spirit, man has
- 4:43Speaker 2: two great enemies, by whom the devil tempts him and
- 4:49Speaker 2: with whom he has to contend. The one is the
- 4:54Speaker 2: world outside, and the other is the self life. Within
- 5:02Speaker 2: this last, the selfish ego is much more dangerous and
- 5:08Speaker 2: stronger than the first. It is quite possible for a
- 5:12Speaker 2: man to have made much progress in forsaking the world
- 5:17Speaker 2: while the self life retains full control and dominion within him.
- 5:25Speaker 2: You see this fact illustrated in the case of the Disciples.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Peter could say with truth, we have left all and
- 5:36Speaker 2: followed you. Yet how manifestly did the selfish ego, with
- 5:43Speaker 2: its self pleasing and its self confidence, still retain its
- 5:49Speaker 2: full sway over him. The Lord led them up to
- 5:54Speaker 2: the point of forsaking their outward possessions and following him.
- 6:00Speaker 2: He also began to teach them that a disciple must
- 6:04Speaker 2: deny himself and lose his own life if he would
- 6:09Speaker 2: be worthy of receiving the life of Christ. It was
- 6:15Speaker 2: love for this self life that hindered the Lord Jesus
- 6:19Speaker 2: from doing his work in man's heart. It cost them
- 6:25Speaker 2: more to be redeemed from the selfish ego within them
- 6:31Speaker 2: than to withdraw from the world around them. The selfish
- 6:35Speaker 2: life is the natural life of a sinful man. He
- 6:40Speaker 2: can be liberated from it by nothing except death, and
- 6:45Speaker 2: that is by first dying to it and then living
- 6:50Speaker 2: in the strength of the new life that comes from God.
- 6:55Speaker 2: The forsaking of the world began at the outset of
- 6:59Speaker 2: the three years of discipleship. At the end of that period,
- 7:04Speaker 2: at the cross of Jesus, dying to the self life
- 7:09Speaker 2: first took place. When they saw him die, they learned
- 7:14Speaker 2: to despair of themselves and of everything they had previously
- 7:19Speaker 2: based their hope. Whether they had thought of their Lord
- 7:23Speaker 2: and the expected redemption, or of themselves and their shameful
- 7:28Speaker 2: unfaithfulness toward him, they tended to be filled with despair
- 7:35Speaker 2: over everything. Little did they know this despair would break
- 7:41Speaker 2: up of their hard hearts and mortify their self life
- 7:47Speaker 2: and confidence in themselves. This enabled them to receive something
- 7:54Speaker 2: entirely new, namely a divine light through the spirit of
- 8:00Speaker 2: the glorified Jesus in the innermost depths of their souls. Oh,
- 8:07Speaker 2: that we could understand better than nothing hampers us as
- 8:14Speaker 2: much as a secret reliance on ourselves. On the other hand,
- 8:20Speaker 2: nothing brings us as much blessing as entire despair of
- 8:26Speaker 2: ourselves and all that is on the earth, teaching us
- 8:31Speaker 2: to turn our hearts holy to heaven to partake of
- 8:38Speaker 2: the heavenly gift. They, the early Disciples, received and held
- 8:45Speaker 2: fast the promise of the Spirit given by the Lord Jesus.
- 8:51Speaker 2: In his farewell address. Jesus comforted his disciples in their
- 8:56Speaker 2: sorrow over his departure with one great promise, namely, the
- 9:03Speaker 2: mission of the Holy Spirit from heaven better than in
- 9:09Speaker 2: his bodily presence among them. It would be to them
- 9:14Speaker 2: the full fruit and power of His redemption. The divine
- 9:19Speaker 2: light He himself, with the Father, was to make their
- 9:24Speaker 2: abode within them. They were to know they were in
- 9:29Speaker 2: Him and he in them at his ascension from the
- 9:35Speaker 2: Mount of Olives. This prommet of the Spirit was the
- 9:39Speaker 2: last subject he addressed to them. It is evident the
- 9:45Speaker 2: disciples had little idea of what this promise signified, but
- 9:51Speaker 2: however defective their understanding was. They held it fast, or
- 9:56Speaker 2: rather the promise held them fast and would not let
- 10:02Speaker 2: them go. They all had only one thought. Something has
- 10:08Speaker 2: been promised to us by our Lord, and it will
- 10:12Speaker 2: give us a share in his heavenly power and glory.
- 10:18Speaker 2: We know for certain that it is coming. What the
- 10:21Speaker 2: thing itself was, or what their experience of it was
- 10:25Speaker 2: to be, they could give no account. It was enough
- 10:30Speaker 2: for them that they had the word of the Lord.
- 10:34Speaker 2: He would make it a blessed reality within them. The
- 10:39Speaker 2: same disposition is needed now to us also, even as
- 10:47Speaker 2: to them, as the word of the Lord come concerning
- 10:51Speaker 2: the Spirit who is to descend from the throne of
- 10:55Speaker 2: Heaven in the power of his glorified life. We read
- 11:01Speaker 2: before he that believes in me, out of his innermost
- 11:06Speaker 2: being shall flow rivers of living water John seven thirty eight.
- 11:14Speaker 2: For to us also, the one thing needed is to
- 11:17Speaker 2: hold fast to that word, to set our whole desire
- 11:22Speaker 2: on the fulfillment of it, and to lay aside everything
- 11:27Speaker 2: else until we inherit the promise the word from the
- 11:32Speaker 2: mouth of Jesus concerning the reception of the Spirit in
- 11:37Speaker 2: such measure that we will be endured and endued with
- 11:42Speaker 2: power from on high must fill us today with strong
- 11:47Speaker 2: desire and with firm, joyful assurance.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Richard will be right back in a moment to wrap up.
- 11:57Speaker 1: But if you've just joined us. You've been listening to

- 12:34Speaker 1: and printed by Discovery House Publishers. Again, here is Richard
- 12:38Speaker 1: to wrap up today's message.
- 12:43Speaker 2: You see, believer, the Holy Spirit is God. He is
- 12:50Speaker 2: the in dwelling spirit of Christ. As we read in
- 12:56Speaker 2: Galassians chapter two, we see that we are not to
- 13:02Speaker 2: be deceived by man's philosophy or in any way by
- 13:08Speaker 2: human tradition based on those elemental forces of the world
- 13:14Speaker 2: and not based on Christ. For in Him the entire
- 13:20Speaker 2: fullness of God's nature dwells bodily. And you have been
- 13:26Speaker 2: filled by Him who is the head over every ruler
- 13:34Speaker 2: and authority Colossians, chapter two and verses eight through ten.
- 13:45Speaker 2: And that is today's Reflection on the Word.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Thank you, Richard. Join us again tomorrow when we continue
- 13:53Speaker 1: with the next edition of Reflections on the Word with
- 13:56Speaker 1: Richard King or Richard the entirety. This is Chuck to
