- 0:00Hello and welcome to the Christian Business Growth Podcast.
- 0:03I'm here with Angela Maize.
- 0:04So Angela, how did God get you into business?
- 0:08Well it's a great story for for me because it's a story that I didn't expect I didn't expect to be in business.
- 0:17And during uh during COVID, I started my business in the year 2000.
- 0:24Um actually July July 8th is when I got the EIN.
- 0:29So it's kind of interesting because we're doing this about the same time as as when I started my business.
- 0:36And that was six years ago.
- 0:38I started because I had a knee replacement and I was sitting around and I was looking to find something to to do with the closure and with me laying around and not doing much.
- 0:56And I have a background in counseling and I have a lot of different things in my background in business and different things.
- 1:05And so I kind of prayed about
- 1:08God, what should I do with the skills that I have?
- 1:12And I came up with life coaching.
- 1:15And at that time, I was like, I'm not quite sure if I really want to do this or not.
- 1:20And so I was praying about it.
- 1:23The the next day I had and I'm serious, it's 24 hours.
- 1:30The next 24 hours, I had someone call me up and wanted my skill set.
- 1:37And I'm like, I am not counseling at the moment, but I'm doing life coaching.
- 1:41And he's like, you're hired.
- 1:43So that was that was the beginning.
- 1:45And that yeah, and I've been going ever since.
- 1:50Help us understand what's the difference between life coaching and counseling.
- 1:54Well, it's a very good question.
- 1:56Uh a lot of people have a difficulty between the two.
- 2:00And as a counselor, you're trained to to go through what is causing your your issue.
- 2:11The they're not necessarily looking at um moving forward, but at at causes.
- 2:19So what is causes and how
- 2:22What do we need to do in order to get past those causes?
- 2:25So a lot of it is emotional issues, uh, things from your past uh that has stopped you from moving forward.
- 2:34And coaching is taking what is happening now and not necessarily worrying so much about what's happened in the past, even though we do touch on that, but how do we move forward?
- 2:48How do we get past what's going on?
- 2:52You know?
- 2:52So
- 2:53great explanation.
- 2:54Counseling is looking backwards and life coaching is looking forwards.
- 2:58That's a simple way to communicate that.
- 3:00Thank you for sharing that.
- 3:02So what's God doing your business right now?
- 3:07Right now I am I I since it's six years at this particular year has been a very difficult year for me.
- 3:17Uh I am taking some time to kind of review my business, figure out what it is that I'm actually gonna focus on moving forward.
- 3:29And so I have been doing a revamping and I renamed my business to
- 3:38life chapter transformation.
- 3:42And I really want to work with people that are having difficulty in transitioning from one part of their life to another part of their life.
- 3:54And I want to help transform them into what God wants them to be.
- 4:01Make sense.
- 4:01And are you gonna share about what's been going on in your life recently, something you've gone through recently?
- 4:07Sure, sure.
- 4:08yes.
- 4:10In October of last year, my mother passed away.
- 4:14and in December my stepfather passed away.
- 4:18And then um in April, my husband of 32 years passed away.
- 4:28So I was taking care of my mom.
- 4:31I was taking care of my husband.
- 4:34I was doing a lot of caregiving.
- 4:36So my business wasn't on the forefront of my my plan at the time.
- 4:42But I was still working and I was still doing coaching.
- 4:47But I didn't have I didn't have the capacity to put 100%, you know, I didn't even have the capacity to put, you know, 75% into my business.
- 4:58You know.
- 4:58So now now I am reevaluating what I want with my life.
- 5:04I'm reevaluating
- 5:06How I wanna live my life and and asking God, give me direction of where I should go.
- 5:14Yeah.
- 5:15So if someone's listening and they've lost someone recently and they're doing that balance between their their job and their dealing with the loss and the grief and everything, what
- 5:24would you what would be some encouragement you might give them?
- 5:32To trust in God's plan, that's that's what I would it's really hard when you're in the process of losing somebody.
- 5:43It's really hard.
- 5:44Um But to trust that God has a plan and that He doesn't forsake you, even though it may feel like it, because it does, it feels like it.
- 5:56Um that uh to reach out
- 6:01to your church, to reach out to your f family, to reach out to
- 6:08To those that, if you don't have family to those that are like family to you, don't do it alone.
- 6:16Don't do it alone.
- 6:17And in the business balancing between the two, I would say, ask God.
- 6:28You know, ask God what He wants you to do.
- 6:31And for me,
- 6:33Being able to step outside of my caregiving and doing something for someone else actually helped me process what I was going through.
- 6:43So it gave me someplace else other than the stress and the anxiety and the the the sadness.
- 6:52It g it takes you outside of that.
- 6:55So it was very helpful for me.
- 6:57Yeah, and there's a balance on the backside of that of workaholic.
- 7:00I'm a workaholic, so I can put myself into business and ignore everything else.
- 7:04But there's gotta be that balance, you know, take that time you need to work on your business, but also give yourself time to deal with the emotions, whether that's
- 7:11reflecting, journaling, or whatever that is.
- 7:14When I when my mother passed, I stayed in Florida and was dealing with all that processing with my stepfather.
- 7:21And I was trying to do my business in it so I would set aside time for business and set aside time for family.
- 7:26Set aside time for business, set aside time for family.
- 7:28I was so busy being busy that the processing of it had to happen differently.
- 7:32Cause you externally focus versus internally focus.
- 7:38Yeah.
- 7:39If you have the opportunity, not a lot of people have the opportunity to be able to choose between one or the other.
- 7:46And I had the opportunity to say, I don't have to work as much.
- 7:51And so I backed off.
- 7:54But not a lot of people have that opportunity.
- 7:56Um if you do, I would do as much as you possibly can to process and to spend time with that family member.
- 8:07Because your business will be there.
- 8:11It'll be there.
- 8:12But your family member won't be.
- 8:14oh And so and your emotions affect your business.
- 8:19No matter what you think, I'm a workaholic.
- 8:22I I focus on this.
- 8:24I can focus on that.
- 8:25It affects your business no matter what.
- 8:28And it affects how you interact with other people.
- 8:31Yeah.
- 8:33That's yeah, even when you feel sick, it impacts how you do your business.
- 8:37I know when I'm ill sometimes I'll I'll carve out a little bit of time in the morning when I'm feeling good, but then I'll just shut everything down after that 'cause I know I've
- 8:44got to separate and take care of my health.
- 8:45'Cause health's a big part of the process also, 'cause when you're grieving that emotions affect your health.
- 8:52That's a great analogy.
- 8:54It's like, um, if you're sick, it's it's easy to um, it's easier to say, oh, I need to take some time off, right?
- 9:05Well, emotions with sadness is very similar to a physical illness.
- 9:11You know, you need to be able to recover.
- 9:14You need to be able to spend that time to say, my body needs to recover.
- 9:18Because the the sadness.
- 9:21And the stress and the anxiety actually affect your body worse than say cold.
- 9:29You know, it's long term effects.
- 9:32So and I'm feeling that now.
- 9:34The long term effects of your body.
- 9:36Yeah.
- 9:39Yeah, it's it's amazing the process of the our that our bodies go through and then you and I as Christians we add in the aspect of God and i there's a peace that underflows
- 9:48everything when you can grasp hold of who God is in your life.
- 9:54That's true.
- 9:54Yeah.
- 9:57And it it makes it.
- 9:59I I I had a lot of people ask me, especially the nursing staff, had asked me, how do I get through this?
- 10:07And I said, there's no way that I could have done this without the presence of God, without relying on God, without knowing that there is a plan in place, knowing that.
- 10:21where my husband is gonna go when he passed, knowing where my mother was gonna go when she passed.
- 10:28I mean that what she kept saying to me, she kept saying it over and over, is like she was looking forward to heaven.
- 10:34She was.
- 10:36She was looking forward to it.
- 10:37Her only only regret was leaving her kids.
- 10:41She didn't want to leave her kids, but she was like, I'm ready.
- 10:44I'm I'm going.
- 10:46I'm gonna be in heaven, you know.
- 10:48My mom was British and so she was like, I'm gonna have a cup of tea to Jesus.
- 10:53So
- 10:55A cup of tea with Jesus.
- 10:56That sounds like a book, doesn't it?
- 10:58It does, doesn't it?
- 10:59It does.
- 11:00That's so sweet.
- 11:01That's awesome.
- 11:02Thank you for sharing that.
- 11:03That's fun.
- 11:04So let's shift into our business growth concepts.
- 11:06I know it's weird to shift from grief to business growth.
- 11:10But that's what we do here.
- 11:12Sometimes you things happen and and life is part of life and we still have to move forward because when we start, like you said, with counseling, when you're looking back so much,
- 11:20you're just bringing all that weight with you versus looking forward where you can move past what you're dealing with and move to a greater future.
- 11:28Again.
- 11:29aligning ourselves with God and knowing what He has in plan for us.
- 11:32It's not always easy.
- 11:34But we have to get through it.
- 11:36I think I I think about the Psalms, you know, David wasn't afraid to yell at God, What's going on here?
- 11:42Why is this not working?
- 11:43And but God but he always came to the point, but we gotta praise God anyway.
- 11:49We still gotta align ourselves with his will.
- 11:51And so it's whenever I have those rough times I turn to Psalms personally, because that's where God reminds me I can be emotional and still
- 11:59Love God.
- 11:59Um so business growth tips.
- 12:01What is your business growth tip for today?
- 12:06Excuse me.
- 12:08My business growth.
- 12:10My business growth tip is uh find mentors.
- 12:15Find mentors for your business and for yourself.
- 12:19When I first started, I I had been in business, but I hadn't run a business.
- 12:25So I knew that the different parts of a business.
- 12:29And when you're starting it yourself, you realize you have to be sales, you have to be marketing, you have to uh you have to be the administrator, you have to be the web
- 12:40designer, you have to do all these different things.
- 12:44And uh I I found that I didn't necessarily know how to do all those things.
- 12:52So finding people to help you, like um my son's a graphic designer, so helping me.
- 12:58with the web and my my graphics and things like that.
- 13:02So sparsing out the different areas in which you don't know um and you don't have the time to learn, give that to someone else to do.
- 13:12But in the rest, where your your sales, your marketing, how how to do the EIN, how how to run a business.
- 13:21I found a mentor and I went through uh score S C-O-R-E.
- 13:28And I went through them on starting my business.
- 13:32And then I went and found a sales mentor.
- 13:36Uh, we both know Justin.
- 13:39And uh I went and found uh several other I found a coach that was my mentor, and I found a Krishna coach because that was important to me.
- 13:50Uh I was doing some research, I just found that uh the value system.
- 13:57didn't line up with me.
- 13:58So finding mentors that follow your values is so important.
- 14:06And that's how I started business and um and gradually grew with the business.
- 14:12Um I became a better human being, you know, I became a better business owner.
- 14:19I think it's really important to have mentors.
- 14:22I agree.
- 14:22And I want to address something that I've heard other entrepreneurs say and I don't necessarily agree with.
- 14:27If you're listening to a podcast or you're reading a book, those aren't mentors.
- 14:31That's a learning process.
- 14:33A mentor is somebody who can see into and speak into your life directly that you have a relationship, a back and forth relationship.
- 14:40Because a one way relationship's never going to help you grow.
- 14:43You've got to have that back and forth.
- 14:44What would you tell somebody that's like, well, I I wa watch all these podcasts, I know what I'm doing.
- 14:52That is a good learning tool.
- 14:54I would say it's a very good and it's a good start.
- 14:58But it's not your business.
- 15:01It's someone else's business that they're talking about.
- 15:04It is something else that someone did for themselves.
- 15:09And your business is going to be unique to you.
- 15:13And you need someone who's going to say exactly what you were talking about, speak into what it is that you need.
- 15:19And also
- 15:21what it is for your personality.
- 15:23I I think personality, your personality is represented in your business, you know?
- 15:30And when you have a mentor, a mentor will actually adjust what they're teaching and what they're working with you on based upon what you need specifically.
- 15:42Wow, it's it's incredibly important because then you also have someone that you could talk to.
- 15:51That was the biggest thing in the beginning for me is like, who do I talk to?
- 15:54Who do I who do I bounce ideas off?
- 15:58Who who is this that, you know, I can learn all this information, but you know, I need to adjust and I need to figure this out for myself.
- 16:07And how, how do I do that?
- 16:09You know, and being able to feel like I'm not doing this all alone in this world.
- 16:16And people uh
- 16:18People have done this before you, so there's no point reinventing the wheel.
- 16:22And so a mentor can help you with that.
- 16:25It's like, well, take this bit and take this bit and let's let's make it fit for you, you know, and the encouragement that a mentor is, you know.
- 16:35And that's why I I encourage a Christian mentor.
- 16:39Just because uh they're going to base it on uh the Bible and about what Jesus' values are.
- 16:47Not of what worldly values are about.
- 16:51Yeah, I believe you can learn from people that are not Christian, like your podcast or your book or something.
- 16:56But I think when you have somebody that you want to speak directly into your life, a business coach, a mentor, a life coach, whatever you're looking for, having that person
- 17:05who's aligned with your values, because they're going to speak biblical things into your life as well.
- 17:09And God uses other people to speak into your life.
- 17:13And if the Bible's not part of their process, it's not part of their foundation.
- 17:18You're missing out on a big part of how God wants to communicate to you in my personal opinion.
- 17:23Yeah, well my my personal opinion is very much similar to yours, Kyle.
- 17:28I actually bought books about business, I bought books about sales, uh, I bought books about, you know, being a a small business owner.
- 17:38I and they were non not Christian, but they were very uh they were worldly accepted, you know, and they were great.
- 17:50They had great information.
- 17:52Exactly.
- 17:52had to also sift out what wasn't really ethical in the forms of your value system.
- 18:03And your values are gonna be different from my values, even though we're both Christians, you know.
- 18:08What's important to you is gonna be different from what's important to me.
- 18:12And a mentor will see that, you know, and should work with you on that.
- 18:18Um, hopefully.
- 18:19Absolutely.
- 18:20A quick story.
- 18:21I had a person I was gonna look to as a mentor, but he was putting together an event and he had space for twenty people, but he was gonna tell people he only had space for ten
- 18:29people because he thought he would get the excitement.
- 18:31Things like, I can open up some more space for you, just for you, to make them feel special.
- 18:36So he went into it with to what I would call an unethical concept.
- 18:41You know, I know there's an excitement factor, but don't lie about what you're doing and then call that marketing.
- 18:47That just kind of threw me off.
- 18:49When I heard that I'm like, there's something wrong with this person's moral.
- 18:53radar here.
- 18:55Well, it's a slippery slope.
- 18:57So if he's going to lie about something basic like that, and but when it gets into something very a little bit more complicated, something a bit more expensive, uh, you
- 19:07don't know what the truth is going to be, you know, and you can't trust that person if they're gonna lie about the little things.
- 19:13Uh the chances are they're gonna lie about the big things as well.
- 19:17Exactly.
- 19:18And that's something when you're picking out a mentor, make sure you dig into their personal social media and stuff like that.
- 19:23See if they're actually living out their faith.
- 19:25They're not just talking about it.
- 19:27I saw an ad recently for a spirit-led something something business growth stuff.
- 19:31And when I looked at their actual process, it's basic business growth stuff, which is great, but there was nothing about God in the actual business growth process.
- 19:39And to me, I think your business is your ministry.
- 19:41You have to have God integrated in it.
- 19:44Not just a little bit of God sprinkled on top, which I see so many people do in their business.
- 19:49Yeah, I I mean a business owner.
- 19:52yeah, I'm also a Christian.
- 19:53You know, it's they got they gotta be combined, you know, because your business is who you are.
- 19:59I mentioned that in the beginning.
- 20:01Your business is who you are and it represents your your person.
- 20:07Right.
- 20:08So as we end up here, give us a little tidbit of wisdom you want to leave us with and tell us how we can get in touch with you.
- 20:14Hmm, a bit of t well, what I was gonna talk about I already talked about.
- 20:20So the little bit of wizness, I would say, is uh
- 20:27Is actually don't be afraid to grow, don't be afraid to change a little bit, you know.
- 20:34Don't be afraid to say, I don't know what this is, I don't know how to do this.
- 20:42And go go help find somebody that help you.
- 20:46You know, it's all right, you're not expected to know everything all at once in the beginning, you know, and
- 20:55Honestly, I'm six years in and I still don't know everything.
- 20:59I don't know at all.
- 21:00And I I still have mentors and I will continue to have mentors.
- 21:07If I outgrow a mentor, I will find another mentor, you know.
- 21:12So I think you grow with your business.
- 21:15Your business will be it's a representative who you are.
- 21:20It really is.
- 21:21And if you're willing to grow, then your business will grow.
- 21:25Point.
- 21:26And how can we get in touch with you?
- 21:28Uh well you can call me at you can call me or email me.
- 21:36My phone number is five four one two two three nine five nine five.
- 21:42Or you can call me, uh email me at amyscoaching uh at gmail.com.
- 21:49Okay.
- 21:49And what's your website?
- 21:51Uh it is uh a myscote dot com.
- 21:57Okay.
- 21:57Great.
- 21:58Thanks for your time today.
- 21:59Appreciate ya.
- 22:01thank you very much, Lyle.
- 22:02I appreciate it.
