- 1:03The Laughing Matter from Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny Dollar, Capitanda Vidro
- 1:14Parral, Senor, Yes, another police Oh hi, Parral. I tried
- 1:17to call you a few minutes ago. We've had a shooting out here at
- 1:19the hotel and somebody she's no, no, nobody's dead. The bullet missed.
- 1:23Somebody fired a shot from the terrace into one of the rooms. I
- 1:26am flushed with the red lights. Senor. I make this, sir,
- 1:29and I'm gone like the weed God. But would you do me one thing
- 1:32before you blow up a storm. There's a man missing from his room here.
- 1:36A friend of the man who was shot at He must be around town
- 1:38somewhere. He's an Americano about forty five names. Frank Maltz, Frank mars
- 1:44Buena. We're finding. I'm going to make one APC d B. I
- 1:49mean ap B. You see APB like on radio and los of dollars?
- 1:53All right? Hop to it, Parol senor what it is? This APB
- 2:07toodnight and every weekday night, Bob Bailey. In the transcribed Adventures of the
- 2:10Man with the Action Packed Expense Account, America's fabulous freelance insurance investigator coust Truly
- 2:15Johnny Dollar. From Special Investigator Johnny Dollar, location at Sonata, Mexico to
- 2:35the home office Union States Casualty Company Hartford Connecticant's assignment a laughing matter expense account
- 2:40continues, I am six one dollar a pot of coffee from the hotel kitchen
- 2:47special. It was one am. I've been half asleep when the shot was
- 2:51fired, and I hope the coffee would help get me at least half awake.
- 2:54I hadn't expected it to happen that way, and neither had Good Old
- 2:58Lovable Charlie Burton, America's favorite TV comic. According to his press agents,
- 3:04Charlie had called it a joke, but he wasn't laughing now, and neither
- 3:07was I. Charlie's life was in short for a half million bucks payable to
- 3:12his sponsor. Where he is, senor, These man who was get shot?
- 3:17He didn't get shot, Parral, he got shot at we see.
- 3:22It's what I wished to say. But the tongue is no, make English,
- 3:24do good. You're doing fine. The manager gave Britton another room inside,
- 3:28away from the terrace. Here he's probably got the door locked and the
- 3:30furniture piled in front of it. Monday. I mean he's scared, very
- 3:35scared, come Brendy. Oh see see yeah, I guess so. Now.
- 3:39According to his story, he was asleep here on this side of the
- 3:43bed. Someone fired the shot from outside on the terrace. It broke the
- 3:47window there, and the bullet lodged here in the bed, about six inches
- 3:52above Burton's head where he was lying on the pillow. And see and then
- 3:55he has wake up quick, he is he is no see nobody, senor,
- 4:00it's no, here's nobody. No. He was too scared to know.
- 4:03He jumped out of bed, ran down the inside corridor and banged on
- 4:06my door. I searched the terrace right away and didn't find a thing.
- 4:10And these other people, which I worked for him to make the television,
- 4:14they are also having room which are close to these parral. Your tongue may
- 4:20not make the English too good, but there's nothing wrong with your head Mondesday.
- 4:25I mean you're okay, you're a good cop. Grassies. Yes,
- 4:29yes, any one of them could have fired that shot and they are big.
- 4:31Which ones these people, Well, there's Frank Moltz. He's the producer
- 4:35of the Charlie Burton show. He's the one who was missing from his room
- 4:39though one I asked you to lokay, see you say. Then there's Gloria
- 4:43Dale. She's the feminine star of the show. She's in the third room
- 4:46down. She is in the room of her when the shoot was fired.
- 4:49Yeah, yeah, she'd gone to bed. I had to beat on the
- 4:53door the waker. She hadn't even heard the shot. She'd been pretty upset.
- 4:57She well, she'd been drinking. See it's always the same this American
- 5:02as ladies which have contains are not always there. Drink too much may be
- 5:06right anyway. The third member of the group is Al Schreiber, second room
- 5:10down, he's an actor too, and where he is when these things happen?
- 5:14In bed? So he says, the shot woke him up and he
- 5:15came out into the corridor while Britain was banging on my door. And these
- 5:19are all Senor. Yeah, that's the bunch, which one you think is
- 5:25not like this Charlie. Every single one of them hates him. Then there's
- 5:30another possibility too, that girl I asked you to check on earlier, the
- 5:34maid who works here at the hotel you see Lasageur Villina Morales. Boys were
- 5:39looking, but we are no finer yet. Hey, I know it is
- 5:43then Casi she are not at her house, Senor see Neil Marita Tompoco.
- 5:49Is also the how you say her husband is gone. You're still looking for
- 5:58he, aren't you? Boys? Is you are no thing with that?
- 6:00Or it's no big town and Sanaa, we are a finder too soon now
- 6:04I think you. As for me your creio, I can't tell the manager
- 6:09I was here la por see Capitan de Vidro parral donde d we'll be in.
- 6:20Yeah, this manure have disappeared, you know. And Frank Montz he
- 6:27will now be found. Where is he? He is in cantina. A
- 6:30nightclub is called the Eventono. You know, where is it in town?
- 6:35Somewhere? You see? It is a how you say, Senora, It's
- 6:39one big hot spot. I am seven to one dollars taxi into town.
- 6:48Parral stayed at the hotel to talk to Charlie Burton and the others. I
- 6:51thought I might do some good, at least by keeping them off balanced.
- 6:56Regardless of his knowledge of English, Parral was a smart lad, and his
- 7:00eyes never missed a thing. Leventona may have been a hot spot earlier,
- 7:04but at this time of night it was almost deserted. There were a few
- 7:08weary big girls drowsing at the bar, a scant handful of lace stitch patrons,
- 7:13and Frank Moltz alone at the table, glowing with mellow geniality and bottled
- 7:17health. Well now another night owl insomni and that taste for dives. Pull
- 7:24up a chair, Johnny. Thanks been here long forever, oh, at
- 7:30least for years and years. I am part of the place, my boy,
- 7:33These worm eating rafters, the crumbling walls, this musty aroma of ancient
- 7:40kiel that was spilt on these tiles long before you were even born. I
- 7:44see you see, the place was built by the conquistadores, and I dropped
- 7:47in the very next day. I've been here ever since months. Look Sean,
- 7:51now, speak softly, softly, friend. This is hallowed ground.
- 7:57This is the meeting place. This is the crossroads you see for two separate
- 8:01worlds. The tourists I'm trapsing down from Beach Boulevard up there, they call
- 8:05it slumming. And the townsfolk come up from Gasta, Lum and Balbo,
- 8:09and they all meet the ear and they drink tequila and they dance the sandango.
- 8:15Hey migo about playing a fandango. No, you can't hear, you
- 8:20know, because he is dead. We are all dead here, Johnny.
- 8:26You know something, Molton, You're not nearly as plastid as you're pretending to
- 8:31be. I know that, Johnny. Have you been here all evening here
- 8:37in the Ventor? You know? Now? You like that name d It
- 8:41means it's twenty one? Yeah, I know, I know. Have you
- 8:43been here in the twenty one all evening? Oh no, I've been in
- 8:46all of them. I just ended up here. Never see a better place
- 8:50to end up, Johnny, Where were you around twelve forty tonight? What
- 8:56are you driving at somebody took a shot at Charlie Burton tonight? Ooh,
- 9:01got my fingers crossed? Didn't No, No, they didn't hit him.
- 9:03Well, maybe they'll have another check not if I can prevent it now,
- 9:07that's why you were checking times on me. Huh. You think I maybe
- 9:11made a clay pigeon out of that rat, did you? Johnny? I
- 9:15left the hotel at ten o'clock. Have been a lot of places since,
- 9:18but not back there. I don't know where I was at twelve forty.
- 9:22Maybe some bartender around Donald Lowe. I have seen them all tonight, one
- 9:28time or another. This lush stuff seems to be a habit with all of
- 9:31you, including Gloria. We'll stick around Burton a month, you'll know why.
- 9:35So why do you stick around him? Me? Personally, there's a
- 9:39couple of reasons. I guess I'm trying to help somebody else for one,
- 9:43well myself at the same time, of course, meaning Al Schreiber. The
- 9:48kid is great, Johnny really is, and it'll be his show next year
- 9:52if we can hang on and for the same sponsor with you, producer.
- 9:56That's right. They're fed up with Charlie Burton and they've got reason to be.
- 10:01He's a phony named Johnny, nothing else. It's a fake, it's
- 10:03a build up. They've got to spend more on press relations now than it
- 10:07costs to produce the show. And with Charlie out of it, you and
- 10:09l would be in. Is that the way it stacks up. That's right.
- 10:16You said you had a couple of reasons for staying on. Don't forget
- 10:18it. The second one is not important. It's it's a sob story.
- 10:24It won't be the first one I've heard. Tonight. I'm married, you
- 10:28see Johnny, twenty three years now, and for the last day my wife
- 10:33has been completely paralyzed, utterly helpless. She's in a sanitarium up state.
- 10:39She has to have special care, special treatments, and it costs three hundred
- 10:45and fifty dollars a week, fifty two weeks a year. So I stay
- 10:48on with Burton, and I go on hating him, and whenever the hate
- 10:54gets too bad, I go up and see her. Or she doesn't know
- 10:56me, she doesn't know anyone. She just lies there and brief But I
- 11:01looked at her, and I remember how she was and how I loved her.
- 11:09I still love her. Johnny. So that's the way it is.
- 11:16I left him there in the cantena, with his love and his hate,
- 11:18and walked out into the street, empty and silent, under the wheeling stars.
- 11:22In the soft dark night. A long dog sidled past, gray and
- 11:26gaunt, intent on some mission of his own, and faded into the shadows.
- 11:30And the town slept its own loves and hates put aside until morning.
- 11:35Quiet tom. Then the emptiness was filled with sound, and a flashing red
- 11:41light slashed the darkness. Parral of the Asinata police. He said, the
- 11:46maid from the hotel Velena Morales had come home. One of his sergeants was
- 11:50waiting there with her, brought us let. The tiny room was lit by
- 12:01a flickering oil lamp and a candle burned beneath the crucifix on the wall above
- 12:03the bed. Cement floor and adobe walls bear and clean, like the cell
- 12:09of a nun and a content. She was young, pretty at the moment
- 12:16that very frighten your hotel, Balo, this is an Americano, Senor Carlos
- 12:31Burden. She talks, you know, crying Charlie Bird, Lovable Charlie had
- 12:41been bothering her, annoying her, at the hotel. She tried to avoid
- 12:45him, but it made the mistake of telling her husband. He'd been furious
- 12:48and had come to the hotel earlier in the evening. That's when I'd see
- 12:50the two of them arguing on the terrace. She hadn't seen him since.
- 12:54So send you a dollar. What is it you think? I think you
- 12:58better find her husband and find him quick, Johnny Dollar, This is Charlie
- 13:20Burton speaking. Oh morning Burton, So you're still alive. Huh. That
- 13:24was an adaptive humor. It was entirely out of place. Well it's early
- 13:28yet, I'm the comedian and I'll make the jokes. Your job is to
- 13:31protect my life. Don't tell me you've been shot at again this time of
- 13:35morning. Boy, whoever it is, really must hate you, Burton Dollar,
- 13:39So help me, so help you nothing. You may be good,
- 13:41old lovable Charlie to forty million television viewers, but to me, you're just
- 13:43a pain in the neck. So my clients are worth a half million bucks
- 13:48because he was fool enough to write an insurance policy on your life, but
- 13:50not to me. My priss on you is a fast three cents give it,
- 13:54take a couple. My life has been threatened, sure, and that's
- 13:56why I'm here. But yesterday, when I tried to get you to cooperate,
- 14:00you called it a practical joke. I'm that now, No, because
- 14:03somebody tossed a bullet at you last night and scared the living pants off of
- 14:07you. Well call Captain Perolla, the Ensinata Police. Mister, look,
- 14:11I need another hour's sleep, so don't phone my room again before nine o'clock.
- 14:15Goodbye from Special Investigator Johnny Dollar location in Sonata, Mexico to the home
- 14:31office Union State's Casualty Company, Hartford, Connecticut. Assignment the Laughing Matter expense
- 14:37account continued, Item ten fifty cents room service and a glass of orange juice.
- 14:46Another hour's sleep was out of the question. Just hearing his voice on
- 14:48the phone left me too mad to relax. One of America's most popular comedians,
- 14:52a living legend, and yet his whole cast, the people down here
- 14:56with him on location, hated the ground he walked on. Personally, I
- 15:00was on their side, but my job was to protect his life from some
- 15:03unknown enemy who had sent him a threatening note. And last night the threat
- 15:07had become action and the form of a shot fired from the darkness. It
- 15:11was my job to see that the killer didn't get a second chance, and
- 15:15that's what I was being paid for. And the fact that Charlie Burton was
- 15:18a class A stinker was irrelevant. Frank Moltz, executive producer of The Charlie
- 15:22Burton Show and practically the only early patron of the hotel breakfast room, was
- 15:26sitting at a table alone morning Johnny. I left him sitting in almost the
- 15:31same position at two o'clock in the morning, only the table then was in
- 15:33a back street CANTEENA and Tom he was apparently remembering it, and he avoided
- 15:39my eyes until the waiter had brought my coffee and gone away. I guess
- 15:41I made quite a fool of myself last night. Oh it was a nice
- 15:48of your eyes, Jenny. This is good coffee. Oh you'd been making
- 15:54the rounds last night for whatever reasons, and you felt like talking. But
- 15:58I I wouldn't call that making a fool of you, so all right,
- 16:03thanks. You were sober enough when I left you. Oh sure, you
- 16:07just sat there and let me talk it out. Where'd you go anyway?
- 16:10I came out of the canteen a few minutes later. You disappeared. Captain
- 16:12Parral and Sonata Police pick me up in a prowl car. He'd located that
- 16:15maid from the hotel here. We went to her home and talked to her.
- 16:18So well for the moment, at least, you and Al and Gloria
- 16:22Dale are apparently off the hook. Oh. The maid says Burton was always
- 16:26annoying her whenever she was on duty here he was, I told him to
- 16:30lay all well. Her husband found out and came out here to the hotel
- 16:33yesterday evening. I saw him and his wife arguing out there on the terrace
- 16:36just after dusk, but I didn't know what it was all about at that
- 16:38time. Anyway, That's the last she saw. He didn't come home last
- 16:44night, and he's still missing. I just talked to Parral on the phone.
- 16:47They've got half the police force looking for him, and you figure he's
- 16:49the one who took a shot at Charlie last night. Kind of adds up,
- 16:52doesn't he, I guess. So I hope they find him Johnny before
- 16:56he finds Charlie again. I'd hate to see a poor devil take a rap
- 16:59for a louser. Isn't worth it? Yeah, I know what you mean,
- 17:03well, the chances are they wing didn't neither one of you fellas ever
- 17:04get the bed last night. I'm for long morning. I'll Oh my goodness,
- 17:08Frank, you look awful man. You must have slept on your face.
- 17:11I look the same as I look every morning. I want some breakfast
- 17:15down, No thanks, I'm skipping it. I'm gonna try to get in
- 17:18a dip in that pool before old Blubber tell me he uses out of his
- 17:21feather bed. Oh, I don't think he'll be using the pool this morning.
- 17:23Now, if he remembers what we're shooting today, it said castaway sequence,
- 17:26isn't it. Yeah, we'll get that first, but later this afternoon,
- 17:30if the light on the water is okay, I want to get those
- 17:32shots of him swimming ashore. Good, keep him on retakes until he gets
- 17:36water lives. It's kind of a slapstick desert island thing, Johnny, Oh
- 17:41yeah, yeah. You see, Charlie and I are supposed to have been
- 17:42on this yacht and it sank and I just disappear. But to some stock
- 17:45shots at Charlie swimming like crazy in a stock shot of a deserted south Sea
- 17:49island. And finally Charlie comes crawling up under the beach. That's the sequence
- 17:53we're going to shoot this morning. I see he's pooped. He's dying,
- 17:56you know. Then I step out from behind a bush and I'm were in
- 18:00a full dress suit, white tie and tails. He thinks he's crazy or
- 18:03something. It starts building from there then, Johnny, Hey, yeah,
- 18:06I get the end of he's thirsty. See. So I reach under my
- 18:07coat and bring out a soft drink, an ice cold bottle, and I
- 18:11open it and give it to him. It says caught quality beverages on the
- 18:15bottles. Cott. Yeah. Yeah. So Charlie asks is it any good?
- 18:18And I say it's cot Man, and he says, so what,
- 18:21And I say, so it's got to be good. You see, Johnny.
- 18:25It's out and out slapstick, but it works pretty well on camera.
- 18:27Yeah. It keeps building, you see. I keep producing things out of
- 18:30the bushes, a table and chair, tablecloth, dishes and silver cavea bottle
- 18:36of wine, roast turkey, then a string quartet, and finally a line
- 18:38of dancing girls and the payoffs, a shaggy dog. He says, look,
- 18:42we were shipwrecked together. How you doing all of this? And I
- 18:45say it's easy. I got a cousin in Congress. It's a lot better
- 18:51on film, Johnny, a lot better than it sounds, you know,
- 18:52stripped down this way. Yeah, well, I'm not exactly a fan of
- 18:57Burdens. Oh, he's got some good stuff in this one Dollar. In
- 19:00fact, he's got all the good stuff. The only thing I'm in there
- 19:03for is to feed him the lines as usual. Of course, if I
- 19:07ever get a decent role in his show, I'll drop dead. Oh really,
- 19:11attention, that's not funny. At ees, I said it's not funny.
- 19:18You thought it was when you did it on the show last month.
- 19:19May I remind you that your service is going to be easily dispensed with good
- 19:25fire me. Oh, I could get out of this lousy contract with you.
- 19:29I could start on the PCT tomorrow and at five times what you're paint
- 19:33me, they'll set me up in my own show, and they'll put it
- 19:37in a time slot right opposite yours. In three months, Charlie, I
- 19:40could bump you clear off the screen. You don't say I'll beat it,
- 19:44will you? Okay? Frank, Sorry you had to get caught in the
- 19:48crossfire, mister Dollar. I think personal forget it. See you later,
- 19:52gentlemen, you'll be on that set in a half hour, not a minute
- 19:56later. Yes, sir sh certainly our one big, happy family, aren't
- 20:02you. Dollar? That kid was a nobody when I picked them up.
- 20:04You're wrong, Charlie. That kid is a real talent and you know it.
- 20:07You see, you see what I have to deal with. He's done
- 20:10as much for this show in the past year as you have. You see,
- 20:12Dollar, I'm forced to live in the very presence of my enemy.
- 20:15Who made them your enemies, burdon. Look, my only concern has always
- 20:19been the welfare of those less fortunate than myself, those who depend on me
- 20:23for their professional careers and their lively. I understand there's some difference of opinion
- 20:27about that, but it's envy, nothing but envy. Would you like some
- 20:30more coffee, Johnny? No, thanks, I've had about all I can
- 20:33stand. Yeah, so have I. May I ask what you're doing to
- 20:37protect my life, mister Dollar, if anything at all. Oh, I've
- 20:41taken the usual routine precautions. Routine. I demand more than routine. Not
- 20:45for me, you don't demand anything. I'm working for the insurance company and
- 20:48I'll complain to that God. God, why don't you cancel your policy at
- 20:52the same time, then I can get off this assignment. Couldn't cancel it
- 20:53if I wanted to. My sponsors wouldn't allow it. It's for their protection,
- 20:57not mine. I know that. I think you'd like to see me
- 21:02murdered. Oh no, No, you're wrong there. That would mean i'd
- 21:06loust up an assignment and I take pride in my work, but you wouldn't
- 21:08care personally. No comments while demand protection from the local police, You've already
- 21:15got it. Captain Barral had two men on duty there last night and after
- 21:18that shot was fired watching your room, I didn't see them. They didn't
- 21:21intend for you to see them. Relax, Burton. If the worst does
- 21:25happen, ballistics can probably identify the killer after we get the slug out of
- 21:30your body. All herd. This is no laughing matter. Then why did
- 21:33you treat it like one? Why did you tear up that threatening letter?
- 21:34Why didn't you call the police in right then? Why didn't you cooperate with
- 21:38me yesterday when I got here, And why the devil did you make a
- 21:41pass at an eighteen year old girl in the first place and get her husband
- 21:44out gunning for you. You mean you know who's trying to kill me,
- 21:48if it's any satisfaction to your burton. Just in case he gets past us,
- 21:53you probably have been killed by a man named Natcho Morales. His wife
- 21:57is a maid here at the hotel. Well as you, no doubt.
- 22:02No, that little native girl, Yeah, that little Native girl, both
- 22:10of you. I was wrong, I admit it. I just just lost
- 22:14my head. I guess when a man's under pressure all this time as I
- 22:17am, he doesn't always think straight. Now. I didn't mean any harm
- 22:19toward her. Maybe you'll be able to convince not you of that if he
- 22:22waits long enough to listen. No, don't, don't please. I know
- 22:26you hate me, all of you do. But I'm not as bad as
- 22:30you think. You just don't know the load of star has to carry.
- 22:33Now. Why don't you tell us about it? You frank. You don't
- 22:36think I'm being fair with Al. You think I'm holding him back, not
- 22:38giving him a chance. Well you're wrong. I'm actually carrying him, teaching
- 22:44him things I've learned over the years. He knows quite a bit now,
- 22:48Charlie. So you don't believe me, You don't think I know what I'm
- 22:51talking about. All Right, all right, I'll show you. Al said
- 22:56he was written down in today's sequence. He said that I I had the
- 23:00great role. You heard him say, Oh, let him have it.
- 23:03I'll trade with him. You mean that, Yes, I mean it.
- 23:07Let him change any line he wants. If it is style, you can
- 23:11play it anyway he likes. I'll take that role. He says, it's
- 23:14so bad, and I will still come out to star. All right,
- 23:15all right, all right, Charlie will have a go at it. Fine,
- 23:18I'll see you on the set unless somebody manages to kill me. First.
- 23:22Good morning, gentleman. Oh, I never thought i'd live to see
- 23:29the day. Yeah, that shot last night must have really shaken him up.
- 23:32Oh, that kid will make him look sick, Johnny. He doesn't
- 23:36know what he's in for. Well, there's one way to find out,
- 23:38Johnny. I've been thinking about something you said that made Morales's wife. Does
- 23:42she speak English? No, just Spanish? But what about her husband?
- 23:47Same to you? Only Spanish. Well, but the note, Johnny,
- 23:49the murder threat Charlie got that was written in English? Yeah, I know.
- 23:56The sal Sea Island set was built on the beach the fire of the
- 24:00Bay. The technicians and the rest of the cast were already there when Maltz
- 24:03and I arrived, and they started shooting fifteen minutes later. Floriadale wasn't in
- 24:07the sequence, so she slept in at the hotel. Some of Captain Parral's
- 24:11men were on hand on the lookout for Nacho Morales, but he didn't show.
- 24:15By three in the afternoon, they were nearly finished. They'd shot the
- 24:18last scene once, but Maltz decided on a retape, so Hal sat down
- 24:22again at the fully laid table on the beach and they started to roll.
- 24:26He poured himself another glass of colored water from the prop wine bottle and began
- 24:30to carve the roast turkey while he exchanged lines with Burton. Then suddenly Al
- 24:33missed cue, faulted on a line, and Maltz cut the cameras. Al
- 24:37pushed back from the table, stood up slowly, then staggered and fell.
- 24:42I rushed toward him, pushed through the crowd that was gathering, and kneel
- 24:45down beside him, but he was already dead. And now here's our star
- 25:04to tell you about the final intriguing episode of this week's story tomorrow, a
- 25:07frantic game of musical chairs, with every player desperate because the loser in this
- 25:12game gets the electric chair. Join us, won't you Yours Truly Johnny Dollar?
- 25:32Yours Truly Johnny Dollars, starring Bob Bailey, is transcribed in Hollywood,
- 25:37written by Les Crutchfield. It is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone. Be
- 25:41sure to join us tomorrow night, same time and station for the next exciting
- 25:45episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar. Roy Rowan speaking to welcome back. Well,
- 27:26clearly there are some questions to be answered here. I think we got
- 27:30another nice dramatic bit when we heard from the producer while he sticks with gold
- 27:37Old Charlie, and then we had Harry Bartel as the police inspector. And
- 27:42I just wonder whether it takes as much work to do a broken English Mexican
- 27:49accent as it does one that's speaking fluent and correct English. But there's indication
- 27:56that that's a bit of a cover to row people off. As Johnny's observed
- 28:02several times, he's definitely a very smart cop. The question, of course,
- 28:06is who is behind this? And we'll wrap it all up on Friday,
- 28:11so I hope you'll join us for that. In the meantime, if
