- 1:27Speaker 1: you want us to talk about. Trade deadline is obviously
- 1:29Speaker 1: going to be hot. It's going to be hot in
- 1:31Speaker 1: this show, by the way, in just a few minutes,
- 1:33Speaker 1: so if you're waiting for that, you won't have long
- 1:36Speaker 1: to wait here today. But guys, right out of the
- 1:39Speaker 1: top here, let's talk about the Ools getting a win
- 1:41Speaker 1: today and Trevor Rodgers being good again today. This guy's
- 1:46Speaker 1: really pitching great Brad and Tim, and he pitched them
- 1:50Speaker 1: to a win today. Six innings, eighty nine pitches today
- 1:53Speaker 1: for Trevor Rodgers.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Yeah, he just continues to be extremely efficient too while
- 1:58Speaker 2: he's out there. I mean, I feel like last five,
- 2:00Speaker 2: six seven outings he's had, it's been a minimum of
- 2:02Speaker 2: six run or six innings and you know three runs
- 2:05Speaker 2: are less. He's been really, really good, I think since
- 2:08Speaker 2: the beginning of June is and he's just been He's
- 2:11Speaker 2: been great for them. He's given them a chance to win,
- 2:13Speaker 2: especially today when the offense was taken a while there
- 2:15Speaker 2: to get going. He kept it at one nothing there
- 2:17Speaker 2: that entire time and gave him a chance to kind
- 2:20Speaker 2: of add on there once they kind of gave up
- 2:22Speaker 2: the lead.
- 2:23Speaker 3: But you can't say enough about Trevor Rodgers.
- 2:24Speaker 2: He's really After that struggle there he had, I'd say,
- 2:27Speaker 2: if you're bringing the season up right now half of
- 2:30Speaker 2: the year, that little struggle he had there in the middle,
- 2:32Speaker 2: I mean, he's been phenomenal.
- 2:34Speaker 4: It's been remarkable this turnaround, guys, because it's been the
- 2:39Speaker 4: first three starts of his season really really good, all
- 2:43Speaker 4: quality starts, and then the month of May was just
- 2:46Speaker 4: a complete disaster for him. He had an ERA of
- 2:49Speaker 4: a ten to three to one ops of nine to
- 2:52Speaker 4: ninety six off of him. We outlined all the stats,
- 2:56Speaker 4: you know, the damage that opposing batters were doing with
- 2:59Speaker 4: two strikes with two outs, but Steve just flashed the
- 3:03Speaker 4: graphic up there. His last seven starts, it's a sub
- 3:06Speaker 4: two era. This is the Trevor Rodgers of last year.
- 3:10Speaker 4: And Brad, I wanted to get your thoughts in particular,
- 3:14Speaker 4: on his four seam fastball, because to me, when you
- 3:19Speaker 4: look at the numbers and you break it down month
- 3:21Speaker 4: by month, that's been his biggest difference. His fur seemer
- 3:25Speaker 4: opposing batters slugging percentage in May seven eighty six. In
- 3:31Speaker 4: the month of June it was a two seventy three
- 3:34Speaker 4: slug off of him. He had a thirty one percent
- 3:37Speaker 4: with rate on that four seemer compared to sixteen point four,
- 3:42Speaker 4: so almost double. Is there anything different you're seeing with
- 3:46Speaker 4: his four seam fastball, Brad, And I know the velocity,
- 3:49Speaker 4: especially his last start, had an uptick.
- 3:51Speaker 5: He hit ninety seven.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the velocity going up a little bit
- 3:55Speaker 2: is helpful, but I think it just got back to him.
- 3:57Speaker 2: I think he was kind of messing with his slid
- 4:00Speaker 2: and the sweeper, and I think he was trying to
- 4:02Speaker 2: throw almost too many breaking balls, and I think he
- 4:04Speaker 2: just got back to being the pitcher that he is,
- 4:06Speaker 2: which is foreseen change up. And I mean he got
- 4:08Speaker 2: guys with just bad swings all day on the change up.
- 4:11Speaker 2: And I think the change up in the four steamer
- 4:14Speaker 2: have just gone hand in hand. I don't see anything
- 4:16Speaker 2: that's really jumped out to me. I think his location
- 4:19Speaker 2: has gotten a lot better. He's gotten out of the
- 4:21Speaker 2: middle of the zone and he's gotten it to where
- 4:23Speaker 2: he likes to throw at the top of his zone.
- 4:24Speaker 3: But he's been getting to the edge is.
- 4:26Speaker 2: A lot better than when he was struggling there in May,
- 4:29Speaker 2: and I think that's really been the biggest difference. Like
- 4:31Speaker 2: I said, watching those starts where he struggled, it was
- 4:34Speaker 2: one or two pitches.
- 4:35Speaker 3: It felt like I know, we talked about it.
- 4:36Speaker 2: He can never say with the pitcher it's been one
- 4:38Speaker 2: or two pitches, but it really felt like it was
- 4:40Speaker 2: one or two pitches away. He just stayed out of
- 4:42Speaker 2: the middle of the plate. He's kept damage down anytime
- 4:45Speaker 2: he's given up pits. I feel like it's been mostly singles,
- 4:47Speaker 2: and he really hasn't hurt himself at the walk, So
- 4:49Speaker 2: I think it's just kind of a combination of everything.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Getting ahead with.
- 4:52Speaker 2: That four seamer has been tremendous for him during the stretch,
- 4:55Speaker 2: and I think that's maybe.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Been the biggest difference.
- 4:57Speaker 2: To be able to get back to his best pitch,
- 4:59Speaker 2: which this is a change up, and just throw that
- 5:01Speaker 2: more often. And when you do the push pull, you've
- 5:04Speaker 2: wrinkled in a couple Austu pitches here and there. That's
- 5:07Speaker 2: where success comes from from what I see for him,
- 5:10Speaker 2: and he just got back to doing that better. That's
- 5:12Speaker 2: really all it comes down to is the execution just
- 5:14Speaker 2: got better.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Really good lately for the Ools, much needed and you
- 5:20Speaker 1: know their rotation is given them twelve quality starts the
- 5:23Speaker 1: last twenty two games of three seventy era. That's playoff
- 5:27Speaker 1: caliber starting pitching. The other things aren't holding their weight here,
- 5:31Speaker 1: which is why they haven't railed off more wins than
- 5:33Speaker 1: they have. So the Oils right now are forty three
- 5:35Speaker 1: and fifty one, eighteen games to the MLB trading deadline,
- 5:40Speaker 1: and less than that when you consider you got to
- 5:42Speaker 1: have a few days to make a trade. So eighteen
- 5:45Speaker 1: games hits the deadline. But before those eighteen games are up,
- 5:48Speaker 1: the Orioles have some real decisions to make. We're going
- 5:51Speaker 1: to get into that heavily here in just a moment
- 5:54Speaker 1: on Birdland Territory.
- 5:57Speaker 6: It's summertime. You know what we do at FT We
- 5:58Speaker 6: look for hacks. Can we feel like we can do
- 6:01Speaker 6: it all outside with something that's breathable, something that feels
- 6:05Speaker 6: premium fabletics hooks us up I've got the cloud jersey
- 6:09Speaker 6: t It is super soft crats, but it works at
- 6:11Speaker 6: the gym, it works when I'm on the show, it
- 6:14Speaker 6: works when I'm going to meetings. It is the true
- 6:17Speaker 6: super utility player.
- 6:19Speaker 7: So same here. Difference is I got the nice stripe across,
- 6:22Speaker 7: so you can have style and also have versatility, because
- 6:28Speaker 7: you know what, I'm gonna go to the gym probably
- 6:30Speaker 7: in the same stuff that I'm gonna have my meetings in,
- 6:32Speaker 7: and the same stuff that I'm going to go out
- 6:34Speaker 7: and have breakfast in. So you know what. This is
- 6:36Speaker 7: what Fabletics got.
- 6:37Speaker 6: Me and Kratz. Everyone can shop now at fabletics dot
- 6:40Speaker 6: com slash foul to get seventy to eighty percent off
- 6:43Speaker 6: everything when you sign up as a new VIP. Take
- 6:45Speaker 6: a quick style quiz and be sure to select foul
- 6:47Speaker 6: when prompted to unlock this offer. This is a limited
- 6:50Speaker 6: time offer, so don't wait again. That's fabletics dot Com
- 6:53Speaker 6: slash foul for seventy to eighty percent off everything as
- 6:56Speaker 6: a new VIP.
- 6:59Speaker 1: So as we say there a moment ago. The Oils
- 7:01Speaker 1: have eighteen games to the trade deadline, which is August
- 7:05Speaker 1: third this year. Three against Kansas City coming up before
- 7:09Speaker 1: the break. After the break, three at Houston, three at Boston,
- 7:12Speaker 1: three home against Atlanta, three at Detroit, and three home
- 7:16Speaker 1: against Philadelphia. So that's twelve games against losing record teams,
- 7:21Speaker 1: six against winning record teams coming up four and a
- 7:24Speaker 1: half back in the final wild card beginning today, which
- 7:28Speaker 1: they got to win, So maybe they'll gain some ground
- 7:31Speaker 1: there over the Cubs. So, gentlemen, there are some real
- 7:35Speaker 1: decisions in Birdland. They hope to be buyers, they say
- 7:39Speaker 1: they expect to be buyers. But since Michael Olias made
- 7:42Speaker 1: those comments, the Orils have a losing record, they have
- 7:45Speaker 1: lost ground. He did say, I'll let you know if
- 7:48Speaker 1: that changes, whether we can hold him to that, I
- 7:50Speaker 1: don't know about that. If he's gonna like, hey, media,
- 7:53Speaker 1: I got something to tell you guys, get over here.
- 7:56Speaker 1: I got wes see that. But I got to wonder
- 8:00Speaker 1: if that is changing in the warehouse right now.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Yeah, to me, the biggest thing that's changed the most
- 8:07Speaker 2: is that the Red Sox have kind of started playing better.
- 8:10Speaker 2: And now the Orioles find themselves, at least before today's game,
- 8:13Speaker 2: in last place in the al least, And to me,
- 8:16Speaker 2: that just doesn't feel like a buyer kind of situation
- 8:19Speaker 2: to be, and when you have to climb not only
- 8:20Speaker 2: four teams your own division, you have to count everybody
- 8:23Speaker 2: else that's in the league. So it's just I mean,
- 8:26Speaker 2: since he made those comments where I was feeling pretty
- 8:28Speaker 2: confident there where, I feel like if they could have
- 8:30Speaker 2: went out a little bit of a stretch, maybe you
- 8:32Speaker 2: could be a buyer. But it's just kind of to
- 8:34Speaker 2: me the standings are just dictating where they should be at,
- 8:37Speaker 2: and they might have different plans and tim You brought
- 8:39Speaker 2: up selling and buying to maybe try to figure out
- 8:41Speaker 2: some stuff for next year, But it just feels disappointing
- 8:44Speaker 2: to me the way we've talked about this team, the
- 8:46Speaker 2: way that you just feel like the roster is there,
- 8:49Speaker 2: it just hasn't come together. And I guess that's like
- 8:51Speaker 2: the most the biggest thing that comes to minds is
- 8:53Speaker 2: just disappointing that this is where they find themselves here
- 8:56Speaker 2: right before the All Star break.
- 8:58Speaker 4: I thought Andrew Kitch really hit it on the head
- 9:02Speaker 4: after the game today when asked about why this team
- 9:05Speaker 4: hasn't been able to find a groove, and he mentioned
- 9:08Speaker 4: the little things, and he also mentioned something that We've
- 9:10Speaker 4: talked about a lot, guys, where the starting pitching has
- 9:13Speaker 4: been great over the past month and a half, but
- 9:15Speaker 4: the offense has been inconsistent. And then when the offense
- 9:18Speaker 4: shows up, the starting pitching and then the bullpen and
- 9:20Speaker 4: the defense like they just haven't been able to fire
- 9:24Speaker 4: on all cylinders. And the reality is this that they're
- 9:29Speaker 4: forty three and fifty one through ninety four games, and
- 9:33Speaker 4: they have an identical record as last year's team through
- 9:37Speaker 4: ninety four games, and anyway you slice it, guys like
- 9:41Speaker 4: that's a failure that Michael Oias did not imagine this.
- 9:45Speaker 4: Of course the players did not imagine this, But the
- 9:49Speaker 4: reality is they're here, and Steve flashed up the graphic.
- 9:52Speaker 4: They haven't won that many series of late, and I
- 9:56Speaker 4: can't say with the same confidence of a few weeks back,
- 10:00Speaker 4: month back that all right, they'll turn it on. They'll
- 10:02Speaker 4: turn it on. We're sixty percent through the season at
- 10:05Speaker 4: this point. I just don't know if it's necessarily a
- 10:09Speaker 4: prudent move for Michaelias to push his chips to the
- 10:13Speaker 4: center of the table and diminish and deplete a farm
- 10:18Speaker 4: system that Baseball America ranked fifteenth in their most recent rankings,
- 10:22Speaker 4: they're middle of the pack. I just don't know if
- 10:25Speaker 4: that's the best course of action for this franchise.
- 10:28Speaker 5: But Michael Oas might have to make a move to
- 10:31Speaker 5: potentially save his job.
- 10:33Speaker 4: It's it's a tough decision, and I really don't know
- 10:37Speaker 4: where they're going to go.
- 10:41Speaker 1: I think ownership behind closed doors. Obviously this will happen.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Has to have a heart to heart with Michael Oas
- 10:48Speaker 1: right now, and he cannot go into this deadline making
- 10:51Speaker 1: moves to save his job. They need to save the
- 10:55Speaker 1: Oriels future. That's what they all need to be doing.
- 10:58Speaker 1: And here's what I think, just a little bit I
- 11:00Speaker 1: know of Elis. People can criticize him for a lot
- 11:04Speaker 1: of things right now, and they're maybe not wrong. I
- 11:07Speaker 1: just believe he's professional enough, and they signed his paycheck
- 11:11Speaker 1: that if they have a meeting again, Mike, if you
- 11:13Speaker 1: see something that's a buy deal, let's talk about it.
- 11:16Speaker 1: But we're just not going anywhere. We're spun our wheels
- 11:18Speaker 1: for one hundred games. We can't just hope for a miracle.
- 11:21Speaker 1: We can't mortgage the future for two months. That's not
- 11:24Speaker 1: going to lead anywhere. We have to do the right
- 11:26Speaker 1: thing for the oriel future, and when he made those
- 11:29Speaker 1: press conference comments, he sort of said that that, you know,
- 11:33Speaker 1: reading between the lines here, I will do what's right
- 11:35Speaker 1: for the future of the Orioles.
- 11:38Speaker 4: And Steve, it's something I was thinking to turn the
- 11:40Speaker 4: show that just ended on the fan. I know it's
- 11:44Speaker 4: a much different situation, but I was thinking back to
- 11:48Speaker 4: the twenty twenty two Orioles where boy was at a
- 11:51Speaker 4: fun ride. Adley got brought up in May. The team
- 11:54Speaker 4: was winning all these come from behind wins, these walk offs.
- 11:58Speaker 4: That team was right around five hund maybe even a
- 12:00Speaker 4: game or two up, and they were firmly in the
- 12:03Speaker 4: mix in the wild card hunt. And Michaelias chose to
- 12:07Speaker 4: sell at that deadline, and I still firmly agree he
- 12:11Speaker 4: made the right move even then, you know, trading away
- 12:13Speaker 4: at trey Ant seeding, trading away a Jorge Lopez at
- 12:17Speaker 4: that point, and he came out and said, look, our
- 12:20Speaker 4: projections didn't have us in the playoffs.
- 12:23Speaker 5: We didn't think we were gonna make it.
- 12:25Speaker 4: He made the right call there, and I just think
- 12:29Speaker 4: you got to might make the right call here, and
- 12:32Speaker 4: you can't make these rash decisions barring a crazy run.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Brad, Yeah, and I just get at this point, we
- 12:40Speaker 2: haven't seen them win four games in a row, and
- 12:41Speaker 2: it just it's I mean, when you look at the
- 12:43Speaker 2: standings and eque games under five hundred, if you can't
- 12:46Speaker 2: win four in a row, how can you creep closer
- 12:48Speaker 2: to five hundred, which then gives you a chance? And honestly,
- 12:51Speaker 2: this year might be one of the first times we
- 12:52Speaker 2: ever see a team right at five hundred or like
- 12:55Speaker 2: two or three games over five hundred make the playoffs.
- 12:57Speaker 2: But at the same time, like you're saying, where does
- 12:59Speaker 2: that leave you? If you push all the chips in
- 13:01Speaker 2: next year, when you still have Gun or you still
- 13:03Speaker 2: have Adli, you still have Pete, you still have all
- 13:05Speaker 2: these pieces that you put together to have a winning
- 13:08Speaker 2: year this year, you just don't know where that what
- 13:11Speaker 2: happens in the coming years. If you decide to just
- 13:14Speaker 2: make these trades for now, and if it doesn't work now,
- 13:17Speaker 2: then it's like, oh gosh, now you're behind the eight
- 13:19Speaker 2: ball for next year. And it's just that the window,
- 13:22Speaker 2: it just it gets tough because the window is just closing,
- 13:26Speaker 2: and it's I think fancied. I think Mike Elias sees it.
- 13:29Speaker 2: It's that these guys are getting closer to free agency
- 13:32Speaker 2: and you kind of picked your catcher, so like what
- 13:35Speaker 2: do you do with Adli? And like, it's just, you know,
- 13:38Speaker 2: it's these tricky questions that I there's a lot more
- 13:40Speaker 2: to it than I think even us sitting here are
- 13:43Speaker 2: trying to figure out. And we follow the team all
- 13:45Speaker 2: the time and diehard fans, there's just it's a it's
- 13:47Speaker 2: a tougher question to answer.
- 13:50Speaker 3: I feel like, then just do we buy do we sell?
- 13:52Speaker 2: I think there's somewhere in between where you just have
- 13:55Speaker 2: to kind of make a decision on these guys and
- 13:57Speaker 2: hope that it helps next year moving forward, the.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Best run we saw this team this year was that
- 14:03Speaker 1: ten and four run. So let's say eighteen games to
- 14:06Speaker 1: the deadline. Let's give them fifteen and give them three
- 14:09Speaker 1: days to make a trade. If they went ten and five,
- 14:12Speaker 1: they're three games under. Still they would be a lot
- 14:16Speaker 1: closer to the wild card. Maybe they'd only be a
- 14:18Speaker 1: game or two out. And is this team capable of
- 14:21Speaker 1: that right now? I don't look like they are, But
- 14:22Speaker 1: that doesn't mean they can't. Because we've seen him beat
- 14:25Speaker 1: the Yankees, we've seen him beat the Rays, we saw
- 14:27Speaker 1: him beat the Dodgers, So core course they could go
- 14:29Speaker 1: ten and five. It's not a tough schedule coming up,
- 14:33Speaker 1: but that still might not be what they need. And
- 14:36Speaker 1: the deadline is coming. They don't have a month and
- 14:39Speaker 1: a half to figure this out. They got about two weeks.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I think like the most frustrating part of this
- 14:45Speaker 2: stretch here is that at the beginning of the season
- 14:47Speaker 2: we were talking about the inconsistency, inconsistency of the starting
- 14:50Speaker 2: pitching that has done its job, and now they're just
- 14:53Speaker 2: they're struggling to score runs. And when they do score runs,
- 14:56Speaker 2: the bullpens had their struggles. So it's just been the
- 14:59Speaker 2: perfect storm of everything. Does everybody just put it together
- 15:03Speaker 2: in eighteen days? I just they haven't shown it to
- 15:05Speaker 2: this point. So then you have to start looking at
- 15:07Speaker 2: the guys that are going to be free agents, as
- 15:09Speaker 2: Taylor Ward somebody that they have to consider. I think
- 15:12Speaker 2: Trevor Rodgers at this point. I hate to say it,
- 15:14Speaker 2: but I feel like he has to go that you
- 15:16Speaker 2: have to get all you can for him, and then
- 15:18Speaker 2: from there maybe you determine your strategy. But to me,
- 15:21Speaker 2: he seems to be the best chip that they have,
- 15:24Speaker 2: and who knows if you trade him, then you bring
- 15:26Speaker 2: up Terry Gibson and maybe he gets some starts, Kate
- 15:29Speaker 2: Povic gets a few starts. You kind of figure out
- 15:31Speaker 2: your rotation for next year. Maybe you get a piece
- 15:33Speaker 2: or two for next year's team, and maybe they go
- 15:35Speaker 2: in a room without Trevor Rodgers. It's just it's it's confusing,
- 15:40Speaker 2: it's it's frustrating, it's all this stuff together at the
- 15:42Speaker 2: same time.
- 15:44Speaker 5: It is and look, I feel for the fans.
- 15:47Speaker 4: I feel for the fact that it seems like we're
- 15:51Speaker 4: heading back in this direction for a second straight year,
- 15:54Speaker 4: and you know, you're just a couple of years removed
- 15:56Speaker 4: from what Michael Iyas said. They were on top of
- 15:59Speaker 4: the baseball world in almost every facet, but Jeff Passing,
- 16:03Speaker 4: he's as plugged in as anybody from a national perspective.
- 16:06Speaker 4: On ESPN, he put out his top one hundred trade list,
- 16:11Speaker 4: and you know guys that were on there. Number twenty
- 16:14Speaker 4: four was Taylor Ward, twenty nine was Trevor Rodgers, thirty
- 16:18Speaker 4: three was Near Cano, sixty five, Rico Garcia, eighty two,
- 16:23Speaker 4: Andrew Kittridge. Ninety one's Ryan Malcastle, which I don't see
- 16:27Speaker 4: how that's going to happen when he's.
- 16:29Speaker 5: Missed so much time. But he made the list.
- 16:32Speaker 4: The Rogers part of it, Brad and Steve Lake, that's
- 16:36Speaker 4: the one that I think is really tricky, right because.
- 16:41Speaker 5: You either have to trade him or extend him.
- 16:44Speaker 4: And he was saying prior to opening day that the
- 16:48Speaker 4: Orioles hadn't had extension conversations with him, and then he
- 16:53Speaker 4: had that really downturn, and now he's on the upswing again.
- 16:56Speaker 4: So are you selling high? Do you believe in what
- 16:59Speaker 4: you say? It seems like Rogers really likes it here.
- 17:04Speaker 4: I do find that to be sort of a tricky
- 17:07Speaker 4: situation with Rogers.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Boy put up the fill on the screen. The four
- 17:12Speaker 1: pending free agents. If you're talking about selling guys who
- 17:15Speaker 1: can walk at the end of the year, two of
- 17:17Speaker 1: them are hurt little trade value right now for Aiken
- 17:20Speaker 1: or Basket because they're on the il warden. Rogers will
- 17:24Speaker 1: interest contenders totally. Rogers will especially interest it because everybody
- 17:29Speaker 1: wants pitching, everybody wants starting pitching, everybody wants lefty pitching,
- 17:34Speaker 1: and everybody wants a pitcher on a roll. He checks
- 17:37Speaker 1: every box so they could And again, let's keep in
- 17:41Speaker 1: mind we're talking about a rental brings the price down
- 17:45Speaker 1: so fans can give delusions of this huge package. It
- 17:48Speaker 1: doesn't usually happen that way unless the bidding wars so crazy.
- 17:52Speaker 1: But right now, guys, he is the best trade chip
- 17:55Speaker 1: of the rentals. If they want to trade Adlie, that's
- 17:58Speaker 1: another discussion. He's got a year to get and that's
- 18:00Speaker 1: been discussed by the media. The team has made the
- 18:04Speaker 1: public stance they want to keep him forever, so long
- 18:08Speaker 1: way of saying, like you guys have said, this is
- 18:10Speaker 1: really confusing. It's a little bit fascinating to see how
- 18:14Speaker 1: it's going to end up three weeks from today.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree. I think it's going to be fascinating
- 18:19Speaker 2: to see where it ends up. And I just think
- 18:21Speaker 2: when you make a trade deadline trade, you just kind
- 18:23Speaker 2: of have to temper your expectations. It's it's really hard
- 18:26Speaker 2: to hit on the guys that you trade for. Even
- 18:29Speaker 2: looking back to Manny Machada when he got traded, I
- 18:31Speaker 2: think Ools got five players for him or something like that, and.
- 18:33Speaker 3: Dean Kramer, I think was the only one that hit.
- 18:36Speaker 2: And I mean he's been around still, and that's like,
- 18:39Speaker 2: I mean, that's otherworldly hitting on that getting a starting
- 18:41Speaker 2: pitcher for now five plus years with the Orioles. So
- 18:44Speaker 2: it's just kind of like you're tim, I agree with you.
- 18:47Speaker 2: I think it's either trade him or you extend him.
- 18:49Speaker 2: I don't think there's anywhere in between. You can't you
- 18:52Speaker 2: just I just can't see how you could keep him
- 18:54Speaker 2: at this point, unfortunately, because it's just you're going to
- 18:57Speaker 2: lose them for nothing. Or if you extend him, that's
- 18:59Speaker 2: great because I really do think he is comfortable in Baltimore,
- 19:02Speaker 2: likes pitching here, and I think he could help this
- 19:04Speaker 2: team win next year, which makes even more confusing on
- 19:07Speaker 2: top of everything, So is what the heck do you do?
- 19:09Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 19:10Speaker 4: And that's where like, this is not a teardown situation.
- 19:14Speaker 4: This is not a twenty eighteen Orioles. You know, the
- 19:18Speaker 4: runs done, We're going to rebuild, Like this is not that.
- 19:22Speaker 4: And that's where I just wonder how far Mike would
- 19:27Speaker 4: go assuming he does sell it.
- 19:29Speaker 5: Does it just involve rentals?
- 19:32Speaker 4: Like would you trade you know some of these guys
- 19:34Speaker 4: on here that have control, like a yuniar Cano, a
- 19:37Speaker 4: Rico Garcia, those guys out of the bullpen.
- 19:40Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 19:41Speaker 4: I have no idea what Mike is thinking. But like
- 19:43Speaker 4: you were saying, Steve, even though we're less than a
- 19:47Speaker 4: month away from the deadline August third, it still feels
- 19:51Speaker 4: like an eternity, considering the amount of games and considering
- 19:54Speaker 4: the fact that for the most part, ninety five percent
- 19:58Speaker 4: of these trade deadline moves it's happened in the last
- 20:02Speaker 4: handful of days leading up to the deadline.
- 20:04Speaker 5: So still quite a few weeks away.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Man, there's a lot of rumors out there. I saw
- 20:11Speaker 1: a scout in the press box this week who And
- 20:15Speaker 1: again take this with a grain saw because scouts here
- 20:17Speaker 1: a lot. Sometimes what is put out is to deflect
- 20:22Speaker 1: from what you're really thinking. There's so much out there
- 20:25Speaker 1: right now. But this scout contended they would consider moving
- 20:29Speaker 1: Adlie Rutchman, despite their public comments. Again, one scout, one opinion,
- 20:35Speaker 1: one thought one day. I always, as much as I
- 20:38Speaker 1: respect the scouts in the game, they hear so much
- 20:42Speaker 1: as you're so much against the wall right now.
- 20:45Speaker 4: Well, Steve, I'll say, in regards to that, and I
- 20:48Speaker 4: think I've said this on a prior episode, I am
- 20:52Speaker 4: not if I'm Mike, I am not actively shopping Adlely,
- 20:57Speaker 4: He's obviously going to take calls on ad And that's
- 21:01Speaker 4: not a situation where I'm just gonna slam.
- 21:03Speaker 5: The phone like no, no, no, Like I'll.
- 21:05Speaker 4: Listen, and it has to be on my terms and
- 21:09Speaker 4: it has to be a really good offer, because this
- 21:12Speaker 4: is not a rental situation. But Brad, this is I
- 21:17Speaker 4: know he's got another year where Rogers's about the hit
- 21:19Speaker 4: free agency, but this is another situation. You can't just
- 21:23Speaker 4: let ADLEI walk. You can't let him walk for nothing,
- 21:27Speaker 4: and especially this new CBA is not gonna have the
- 21:30Speaker 4: qualifying offer. You know MLB and their latest proposal, the
- 21:33Speaker 4: qualifying offer is gone, so you would literally get nothing
- 21:37Speaker 4: if Adley walked in twenty twenty seven. Now is Adle
- 21:42Speaker 4: gonna entertain a contract extension being this close to free agency?
- 21:46Speaker 4: And that's where it just gets to another tricky situation, Brad.
- 21:50Speaker 3: Yeah, it does.
- 21:51Speaker 2: And I think it's it's one of those pieces like
- 21:53Speaker 2: you're saying, how could you picture going back to twenty
- 21:57Speaker 2: twenty two, twenty twenty three, like an Oriel future without
- 21:59Speaker 2: Adlaie And that's it just it's it's just like so
- 22:03Speaker 2: disappointed because watching those teams. I just remember watching the
- 22:06Speaker 2: Cubs win the World Series in twenty sixteen. I'm like,
- 22:08Speaker 2: this team's gonna win six World Series. Like they have
- 22:10Speaker 2: all these young position players, and it just goes to
- 22:12Speaker 2: show the fragility of windows in baseball. And that's a
- 22:16Speaker 2: big market team. They had all the money in the
- 22:18Speaker 2: world to spend. They just won a World Series. Now
- 22:20Speaker 2: you look at the Orioles, they had the similar situation.
- 22:22Speaker 2: They had this young core coming up. They all kind
- 22:24Speaker 2: of peaked at the same time. And now it's just like, gosh,
- 22:26Speaker 2: you're like, after this year, you have one year left
- 22:28Speaker 2: of Ave, you have two years left of Gunner. It's like,
- 22:31Speaker 2: where the heck did these six years go with these
- 22:33Speaker 2: guys on the team and just not in the spot
- 22:36Speaker 2: that they thought they would be. And it's just it's tough,
- 22:38Speaker 2: and like you're saying, I think at this deadline, you
- 22:40Speaker 2: have to take phone calls on Adley, like you said,
- 22:42Speaker 2: not actively shopping him, but if you get a deal
- 22:45Speaker 2: that blows you away, you maybe pulled the trigger. You
- 22:48Speaker 2: signed us out eight years. He's a catcher of the
- 22:50Speaker 2: future as of right now. So it's yeah, I just
- 22:53Speaker 2: don't know. It's it's just really it's hard. It's hard
- 22:56Speaker 2: to wrap my head around thinking about this team of
- 22:58Speaker 2: that Alley rushman behind the plate being up rolling overall
- 23:00Speaker 2: pick coming up the success the team had it now
- 23:02Speaker 2: they're at this spot. So it's just like you said,
- 23:04Speaker 2: I think it's just most disappointing more than anything else, Bergland.
- 23:09Speaker 1: There are a lot of layers to this. We're heading
- 23:12Speaker 1: for a fascinating few weeks to see how we get
- 23:16Speaker 1: to the other side and what it looks like. It
- 23:18Speaker 1: won't be dull. It almost never is, and this is
- 23:21Speaker 1: certainly true of the next few weeks. Bergland Territory rolls
- 23:25Speaker 1: on here today and we got more to do in
- 23:27Speaker 1: just a moment.

- 24:31Speaker 1: Let me add another layer to our previous discussion. This
- 24:34Speaker 1: came up in the press box this week from someone
- 24:36Speaker 1: who is not and does not work for the Baltimore Orioles.
- 24:41Speaker 1: The Orioles owner is kind of a rookie here. He
- 24:44Speaker 1: hasn't done this long. He doesn't know all the inner
- 24:47Speaker 1: workings of ownership at the trade deadline and now in
- 24:52Speaker 1: his infancy as an owner, and of course he has
- 24:55Speaker 1: a huge support staff and he can reach out to
- 24:57Speaker 1: other owners, and I assume he will to get advice.
- 25:01Speaker 1: What do I do now? Because he's at the top
- 25:05Speaker 1: of the chain, Michael Lias doesn't really do anything significant
- 25:09Speaker 1: unless the people above him sign off on it.
- 25:12Speaker 3: Yeah, it's definitely it's interesting.
- 25:14Speaker 2: And I think I was thinking before with Michael Lias
- 25:16Speaker 2: and he comes from the Astros. The ash had this
- 25:19Speaker 2: young core of hitters that got they all came up together,
- 25:22Speaker 2: they all started mashing, and they all got them winning.
- 25:25Speaker 2: And what they did was make these big trades or
- 25:27Speaker 2: these big signings at the pitching side.
- 25:29Speaker 3: And I feel like the Orioles were.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Right there a couple of years ago and didn't weren't
- 25:33Speaker 2: able to make the trades or didn't make the big signings.
- 25:35Speaker 2: And now it's like, oh gosh, did we did we
- 25:38Speaker 2: miss that? Is that like that era? That that chance gone?
- 25:42Speaker 2: And I feel like it's that's what he makes even
- 25:44Speaker 2: more of, like guys, what do we do we miss
- 25:46Speaker 2: our chance?
- 25:47Speaker 3: Was that it? Or do we still have it?
- 25:49Speaker 2: It's I think that's where he's kind of out of
- 25:51Speaker 2: crossroads too with everything.
- 25:52Speaker 3: Like I said, I don't know what he's thinking.
- 25:54Speaker 2: That just kind of what came to mind when I
- 25:55Speaker 2: was thinking of that Ashros team he was associated with.
- 25:57Speaker 2: They went on to win a couple of World Series,
- 25:59Speaker 2: but they didn't do it well. They made the big
- 26:00Speaker 2: trades and the big signings for the big time pitchers.
- 26:03Speaker 5: Yeah, you're bringing in Verlander, You're bringing in Garrett Cole.
- 26:06Speaker 4: And look, if this is the end of Michael Lias
- 26:11Speaker 4: at the end of this season, that will be the
- 26:14Speaker 4: biggest thing looking back on And Brad, you're bringing up
- 26:19Speaker 4: prior to the break and it's so true.
- 26:20Speaker 5: And this is a cross sports guys.
- 26:22Speaker 4: You know, I'm thinking of the Oklahoma City Thunder, you know,
- 26:26Speaker 4: with Kevin Duran and James Harden and Russell Westbrook. They're
- 26:29Speaker 4: in the finals against the Heat.
- 26:30Speaker 5: Oh, they're gonna be back.
- 26:31Speaker 4: They're all young, spudding superstars. You never know, you never
- 26:36Speaker 4: know when the window is going to close. And I
- 26:39Speaker 4: think that's why it's so important to recognize the moment.
- 26:44Speaker 4: And you know, you can think of the twenty twenty
- 26:47Speaker 4: three trade deadline, just bringing in Jack Flaherty and Fujinami
- 26:52Speaker 4: in twenty twenty four and look, you make the move
- 26:54Speaker 4: for Corbyn Burns but not continuing to add on and
- 26:58Speaker 4: you have the top form system in baseball, but prospects
- 27:01Speaker 4: don't all pan out, and I think that's what makes
- 27:04Speaker 4: it especially disheartening. And you can Monday morning quarterback anything,
- 27:09Speaker 4: of course, but it's tough. It's tough, and fans are frustrated,
- 27:14Speaker 4: and they have every right to be frustrated.
- 27:16Speaker 5: But now it's about trying to build back.
- 27:20Speaker 4: You got to figure out how to get back and
- 27:23Speaker 4: and and part of that, Steve is going to be
- 27:25Speaker 4: what they do with the deadline.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, And I mean, barring a total shock of
- 27:32Speaker 1: all Baltimore, there's no change coming with the Oiel front office.
- 27:36Speaker 1: I don't believe over the next few weeks that this
- 27:38Speaker 1: is the group, and I think fans should and I'm
- 27:43Speaker 1: not being a homer here, but remember this part. This
- 27:48Speaker 1: group did get them to the Ali's title. This group
- 27:51Speaker 1: did produce the number one farm. This group did produce
- 27:55Speaker 1: what's something that's unprecedented, three straight years of the number
- 27:58Speaker 1: one prospect ever happened to base in Baseball America's history
- 28:03Speaker 1: doing prospects. Orioles did it. So they can do some
- 28:06Speaker 1: things that are good for this team. They acquired some
- 28:08Speaker 1: young talent last year. Scouts were talking up Boston Bateman
- 28:11Speaker 1: to me this week. One of the guys they got
- 28:13Speaker 1: from the Padres in that deal, twenty year old lefty
- 28:16Speaker 1: there was ninety eight. So I mean, some good things
- 28:19Speaker 1: could happen here. Even if and the other thing that
- 28:22Speaker 1: could shock us all this would shock us. The Oils
- 28:24Speaker 1: could still make the playoffs. They could sell some playoffs
- 28:27Speaker 1: and they going to make the playoffs, right, Yeah, you're
- 28:30Speaker 1: there only three or four out. It's not ridiculous, but
- 28:32Speaker 1: they're just that we know they're not showing those signs.
- 28:35Speaker 1: So again we're circling back to the same thought the
- 28:39Speaker 1: next few weeks. Ye stay tuned Birdland.
- 28:43Speaker 2: Definitely, and I think this weekend it starts. If you
- 28:46Speaker 2: don't want all these questions to continue. And it's hard
- 28:49Speaker 2: as a player because going through to twenty eighteen, the
- 28:51Speaker 2: trade deadline, it was on my mind all the time
- 28:54Speaker 2: because it was unfortunate. You want to be in a spot,
- 28:56Speaker 2: but you know it's it's heading that way and you
- 28:58Speaker 2: see many go. Then you see I didn't even know
- 29:01Speaker 2: if I was next it. It was just all of us,
- 29:04Speaker 2: like Darren Oda's gone, Godsman Jordan in Atlanta next day.
- 29:06Speaker 2: It just it happens fast and it's just kind of
- 29:08Speaker 2: I still remember leaving the field the last day I
- 29:12Speaker 2: was in Baltimore and just being choked up. I got
- 29:15Speaker 2: done playing catch and it's just you just don't want
- 29:18Speaker 2: to have that feeling because it was such good times
- 29:20Speaker 2: we had for five years, and these fans deserve a
- 29:22Speaker 2: winner that is just can continue to win for years
- 29:26Speaker 2: because the fan base is so good in Baltimore. It
- 29:28Speaker 2: was just it was a hard time going through it
- 29:30Speaker 2: and it's something you don't want to deal with. And
- 29:32Speaker 2: it's just so this weekend, it's starts to go against
- 29:34Speaker 2: the Royals who are really struggling. Also hopefully went to
- 29:37Speaker 2: it a three, maybe get a sweepheaded to the All
- 29:39Speaker 2: Star Break, come out of the All Star Break hot,
- 29:41Speaker 2: and switch the whole thing because, like Steve said, they
- 29:43Speaker 2: are technically still in the playoff hunt and things can
- 29:46Speaker 2: change on a win. So it's I hope these guys
- 29:49Speaker 2: that they just they go into the break hot, get
- 29:52Speaker 2: some rest, get a mental break more than anything else,
- 29:54Speaker 2: come back and just ready to win some games, and
- 29:56Speaker 2: really just for the fans especially, just win some games
- 29:59Speaker 2: and give them the whole back, because it just feels
- 30:01Speaker 2: like it's been slowly weaning away these last three or
- 30:04Speaker 2: four weeks, and all these trade talks are only going
- 30:06Speaker 2: to get hotter and more in your face in the
- 30:09Speaker 2: coming weeks.
- 30:11Speaker 5: And Brad, you bring up the human part of it.
- 30:14Speaker 4: With these guys, and you know, I brought up earlier
- 30:17Speaker 4: the Jeff Pass and the one hundred top one hundred
- 30:21Speaker 4: trade candidates, and he's Matt mixing and match and like,
- 30:25Speaker 4: who would be good here?
- 30:26Speaker 5: Who would be good there?
- 30:28Speaker 4: I can't even imagine as a player like living that
- 30:32Speaker 4: and you bringing up your experience with it.
- 30:34Speaker 5: How to block out that noise?
- 30:36Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's pretty much impossible.
- 30:38Speaker 2: And that's honestly, Trevor Rodgers going out there today and
- 30:41Speaker 2: dominating that was amazing because he's at the top of
- 30:45Speaker 2: the list.
- 30:45Speaker 3: All the fans know that.
- 30:47Speaker 2: So for him to go out there and produce like
- 30:49Speaker 2: he did today and give him a win and at
- 30:51Speaker 2: least put him in the spot to have a win
- 30:53Speaker 2: is awesome because it's a lot you're moving, not just
- 30:56Speaker 2: you yourself, you're moving, if you have a family, you're moving,
- 30:59Speaker 2: then places where you're going. And then you're going from
- 31:02Speaker 2: a team who's kind of just kind of muddling around
- 31:05Speaker 2: to a team directly. I went to Atlanta and literally
- 31:07Speaker 2: the next day I was fishing the eighth inning for
- 31:08Speaker 2: a team trying to win the division. So it's just
- 31:10Speaker 2: all these things I can't kind of get thrown your
- 31:13Speaker 2: way and it's part of the job, so I mean,
- 31:14Speaker 2: it's not something to feel sorry about. But it was
- 31:17Speaker 2: definitely an emotional time because I absolutely loved my time
- 31:20Speaker 2: in Baltimore, and like that last time.
- 31:22Speaker 3: Talking reporters, it was tough.
- 31:23Speaker 2: I mean, I was fighting back tears as I'm doing
- 31:26Speaker 2: it because I literally grew up as a as a person,
- 31:29Speaker 2: as a player those five years of Baltimore. I did
- 31:31Speaker 2: a lot of growing up and it was some of
- 31:33Speaker 2: the best times of my life. And to have to
- 31:34Speaker 2: like literally put it on another jersey the next day
- 31:37Speaker 2: and just move forward without ever thinking about it, I
- 31:40Speaker 2: just knew that was gonna be the last time I
- 31:41Speaker 2: was in Baltimore, and it was.
- 31:42Speaker 3: It was definitely an emotional time.
- 31:43Speaker 2: And guys are going through right now that are going
- 31:45Speaker 2: to be free agents, so I know they're not with
