- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:19Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:22Let's just get straight into the stories for today.
- 0:24I don't have any updates for you guys except we are trying to
- 0:28still get to 500 Spotify by star reviews by the end of the year.
- 0:31So please Spotify star rate US. OK?
- 0:34The first story that I have for you guys today is that Hallie
- 0:36Kate has been called out for returning clothing from a former
- 0:41Abercrombie Hall. So this TikTok is starting to go
- 0:46viral. I would say it's not quite there
- 0:48yet but it is almost viral. So a user named Ashley posted
- 0:51two photos yesterday to TikTok of influencer Hallie Kate
- 0:55walking into Abercrombie and seemingly returning clothing.
- 0:59The writing over the photos reads quote never forget.
- 1:01When I saw Hallie Kate returning all of the clothes she had just
- 1:05posted a haul with the caption on the video says I just
- 1:08remembered I had these pics from 2022 and she tagged Hallie.
- 1:13So this video has racked up over 600,000 views in just a few
- 1:17hours and Hallie saw the video. I mean she was tagged, she saw
- 1:22the video and she commented, she wrote.
- 1:24This is honestly bizarre to just take unsolicited photos of me
- 1:28from years ago and post them trying to make it seem like
- 1:31something it's not. I didn't try anything on.
- 1:34So yeah, I returned stuff that didn't fit.
- 1:37And then the creator wrote back, wait, girl, it's not that deep.
- 1:41And then Hallie wrote you followed me and took photos of
- 1:44me and now are posting it telling me it's not deep.
- 1:47Yeah, that's weird. I'm sorry.
- 1:49The creator says she was going into Abercrombie two.
- 1:51She didn't follow Hallie regardless, I actually agree
- 1:56with Hallie here. I think this video was obviously
- 1:59made to be controversial and shady.
- 2:02It was made to get views. And when Hallie defends herself
- 2:06to be like, it's not that deep. That's just like such a cop out.
- 2:10I think either own your shadiness, like own what you
- 2:14were trying to do here or don't do it.
- 2:16There's also a big difference between having somebody who's
- 2:20like present in the back of your photos, you know, like if I
- 2:24don't know, like if I or to post something on Instagram and you
- 2:26could see people's faces in the background, that's very
- 2:28different than posting something that is like specifically
- 2:31targeted at a certain subject, whether they're an influencer or
- 2:34not. Taking videos and photos of
- 2:36people in public, like, I don't know when that became so OK.
- 2:41And posting it for the Internet to dissect, I think is that's
- 2:44like everyone's worst nightmare. Like, is that not your worst
- 2:46nightmare? That's literally my worst
- 2:48nightmare. OK so this user followed up with
- 2:51a video being kind of even more shady.
- 2:53So she responded to Halley's comment in a video format as
- 2:56well. It's just a screenshot of her
- 2:57notes app and the notes app says I'm sorry posted the vid for
- 3:01attention lol sorry. Hope we can move on and become
- 3:04friends. And then she put the song I love
- 3:07you, I'm sorry from Gracie Abrams like it was this is
- 3:10obviously a troll. OK, so aside from like the
- 3:13ethics around this user posting this and like what she was
- 3:16clearly trying to do to Hallie and then I don't want like gas
- 3:20lights. Absolutely not the right word.
- 3:21But like flip it back on Hallie to be like, it's not that deep.
- 3:23Like aside from all of that, I think there are a few things
- 3:27going on here. So first, I have said this
- 3:30before, but Hallie Kate is one of the most talked about tick
- 3:33talkers on Reddit. I know that's a huge call, but
- 3:37I'm going to say that's true. She annoys people on the
- 3:40Internet more than like anyone I have possibly ever seen.
- 3:45I think she does represent what a lot of influencers claim to
- 3:49be, but usually are actually not, which is she came from
- 3:53quite like humble beginnings and she just started posting and all
- 3:58of a sudden has this like thriving influencer career with
- 4:01all this money. It is like the quote UN quote,
- 4:04like American dream of becoming an influencer.
- 4:07I think a lot of influencers claim that that was their start,
- 4:11that's their story. But we do find out later that a
- 4:14lot of them come from like massive wealth, which is why
- 4:17they can afford to be like a lifestyle influencer.
- 4:20But Halle, as far as I know about her back story, did not
- 4:25come from that type of upbringing.
- 4:27So I think sometimes it can be hard for us to grapple with the
- 4:32fact that like, that could have been us, you know, like you can,
- 4:34you can really see yourself in Hallie, like, I don't know, I
- 4:38can. And I'm like 10 years older than
- 4:39her probably. You know, she is an incredibly
- 4:42relatable person because of the story of her career.
- 4:47But I also think on the flip side, Hallie represents this
- 4:50cohort of influencers that push extreme overconsumption to their
- 4:54audience. Lots of people don't think these
- 4:56influencers add any value. They think they do more harm
- 5:00than good. And I think because of alleys
- 5:02humble beginnings and the story of her career, it feels almost
- 5:07ickier to people. So I think people maybe feel a
- 5:10little bit betrayed from influencers who come from more
- 5:14like quote UN quote like relatable beginnings.
- 5:17And then it feels like they turn.
- 5:19Now when it comes to this particular video and scenario,
- 5:22it's had me thinking a lot about like the future of influencer
- 5:25marketing because obviously this hall is from a while ago and I
- 5:29couldn't find it right? Like she posts like multiple
- 5:32sometimes a day sometimes, and it's from almost three years
- 5:34ago. So I wasn't going to be able to
- 5:35find this video, but it's clear that either she was sent these
- 5:39clothes, I'm going to assume she was either sent these clothes,
- 5:42NPR by Abercrombie or she was doing a sponsorship with them.
- 5:46Either way, it doesn't seem like she like tried to close on
- 5:48picked them herself, right? So the reaction to this video,
- 5:52like the general audience reaction, has me thinking about
- 5:55that kind of ongoing question, like where does influencer
- 5:59marketing go from here? Because there's no denying that
- 6:03audiences have lost a lot of trust in influencer marketing
- 6:06and that it's not as effective as before.
- 6:08Now, that doesn't mean it's not effective at all.
- 6:11I know that's also like a talking point that people throw
- 6:13around, but that's just not true.
- 6:16The data does not support that. Influencer marketing is still
- 6:18very effective. It is just less effective than
- 6:22it used to be. So things do need to change.
- 6:25I would say in the fairly, you know, immediate future, if
- 6:29brands want influencer marketing to continue to be effective.
- 6:33I know a lot of consumers wouldn't really care if
- 6:36influencer marketing went away or they think they wouldn't care
- 6:38if influencer marketing went away.
- 6:39But of course, brands would feel quite differently.
- 6:42So I think the reaction to this video is a strong argument for
- 6:47the shift away from asking influencers to promote products
- 6:50as if they love and use them. We've seen a lot more interest
- 6:54in kind of like in your face advertising over the last couple
- 6:58of years. And it feels a bit conflicting
- 7:01or like contradicting given that we know that Gen.
- 7:05Z are the generation most adverse to advertising.
- 7:08But they are also more likely to receive a very obvious
- 7:12advertisement better than one that is like hidden behind an
- 7:16influencer pretending to be their friend.
- 7:18We actually saw another example of this recently.
- 7:21So there was this video gaining traction on TikTok, and I don't
- 7:23have the name of it, like of the creator, I'm really sorry, but
- 7:26the creator who is saying in this video that they think
- 7:31visual print advertising is going to make a big comeback
- 7:34soon because we appreciate the beauty and visual storytelling,
- 7:38the creativity. And now so many of the ads that
- 7:41young people are exposed to are just on social media.
- 7:44And they don't have that same or like artistic feel that print
- 7:49advertising or advertising in general used to have before
- 7:52influencer advertising. Because now it's all just
- 7:55influencers being sent products. It's so incredibly low effort
- 7:58and the influencers are just like holding up the product
- 8:00product and using it. It's not that kind of like
- 8:03visual storytelling art piece that so many of us grew up with,
- 8:07right, in commercials or print advertising or whatever.
- 8:10So, well, I don't know if print advertising will actually make a
- 8:15comeback. I think what all of this signals
- 8:18to is that people just want an ad to be an ad.
- 8:22At this point, I think give us something that is transparently
- 8:26an ad and we will receive it better.
- 8:29There is scope for brands to use influencers and brief in
- 8:33influencers more transactionally like they would media or like
- 8:37podcasters or I don't know, outdoor advertising like
- 8:41whatever it is, right? Like I think so often
- 8:43influencers are briefed in to say like they love this product
- 8:48and like treat the audience like their friend.
- 8:50And sometimes that works and we have seen that work for years
- 8:52and years and years. But I think what we're starting
- 8:55to see is this shift away because people don't trust
- 8:57influencers and they can see through the like facade of them
- 9:01trying to be their friend. People don't believe actually
- 9:04spoke about about this recently in a deep dive, I think it was.
- 9:07But there's this new like research that's come out that a
- 9:10very large percentage of people when they see an influencer
- 9:13promote a product, they don't even believe that that
- 9:15influencer has tried the product, let alone like can
- 9:18speak to it, right. So I think there's such an
- 9:21erosion of trust in influencer marketing right now.
- 9:23And I think some transparency would do that industry good.
- 9:27You know, like when a brand advertises on a podcast, there's
- 9:31no confusion that it's an ad. It's like support for infinite
- 9:36scroll is brought to you by X. It's like a commercial.
- 9:38And then you go into the brand, what they do, you might throw in
- 9:42something personal, like, oh, I love this mascara or whatever.
- 9:47But at the end of the day, the audience is under no illusion
- 9:52that the podcaster and the brand are trying to, like, trick you
- 9:56into thinking that this is like an authentic review.
- 9:59It's really just like, does this product align with the audience
- 10:02that this podcaster has? Yes.
- 10:04No. OK, let's do an ad.
- 10:06Let's get, you know, the brand's name in the podcast.
- 10:10And like with Gen. Z, it is a bit complex because
- 10:14they are too savvy and they have been too overexposed to all of
- 10:18this. They have parasocial
- 10:20relationships with certain comfort creators that they love,
- 10:23but they also hate feeling patronized and they just like
- 10:28know too much. So there has to be a shift.
- 10:31This is the perfect example for me to talk about this shift that
- 10:34I think needs to happen. So from a brand perspective, I
- 10:38think it is like finding that balance between how you navigate
- 10:42the future of influencer marketing when nobody trusts
- 10:46influencers or very few people trust influencers anymore when
- 10:49they're doing paid ads. That's not that.
- 10:51That's not to say that people don't trust influencers and
- 10:53their recommendations, but but when it comes to a paid
- 10:57partnership, people just immediately are like, everything
- 11:00they're saying is not true. And then I think from a consumer
- 11:02perspective, it's also us understanding that influencers
- 11:07are not our friends. They get sent stuff all the time
- 11:10that they could not possibly use, that they are obviously
- 11:13giving away. You know, they do paid ads all
- 11:16the time for things that they might not necessarily like love.
- 11:21But at the end of the day, like we as consumers also have a
- 11:24responsibility to realize at this point, this many years in
- 11:28that influencer marketing is a type of advertising.
- 11:33The same way that when we watch a commercial, we recognize that
- 11:37that brand has paid for that commercial to run on that TV
- 11:39show. Similar thing.
- 11:41It's like we need to look at influencers as like billboards.
- 11:44I know that is incredibly reductive, but I think if we can
- 11:48take that lens when we are watching advertisements from
- 11:52influencers, that will just like be a better experience for us as
- 11:57viewers, as consumers. It won't make us so upset and
- 12:00angry. And it will also, you know, be a
- 12:03better experience. I don't I don't know if a lot of
- 12:05people care if influencers have a good experience online, but it
- 12:08will be a better experience for the industry as a whole.
- 12:11And then going back to the overconsumption point, the way
- 12:15that these TikTok girls are talked about online is giving me
- 12:20flashbacks to how we all started to talk about the 2010's beauty
- 12:25gurus and like their overconsumption, the lifestyle
- 12:28TikTok girlies are just like the new generation of that beauty
- 12:32gurus got so much Flack for encouraging overconsumption, and
- 12:36that eventually eroded trust in like the entire corner of that
- 12:40Internet. And it really swung the pendulum
- 12:43the other way from audiences wanting like giant makeup
- 12:47collections to audiences thinking that giant makeup
- 12:51collections are gross. So I think that's also something
- 12:54for brands to keep in mind is this massive influx of
- 12:59influencer marketing, this like, push of overconsumption.
- 13:02It's not just going to hurt the influencers, but it's also going
- 13:05to hurt the brands who are trying to use these influencers
- 13:08as vehicles. Like not just from a reputation
- 13:10perspective, but also just like culturally, people are going to
- 13:13shift away. I think there's a lot of lessons
- 13:16that we can take from earlier platforms like YouTube, even
- 13:21like OG blogging, Pinterest, Instagram, that we can apply to
- 13:26like this new generation of creators, especially who are on
- 13:28TikTok, if we don't want this bubble to burst.
- 13:32And I think most of us that listen to this podcast wouldn't
- 13:35want that bubble to burst. I don't think most people
- 13:38actually want the bubble to burst.
- 13:40I think they just think they want the bubble to burst.
- 13:42OK, the next story that I have for you guys is that Sydney
- 13:45Sweeney has hit back at body shamers in a new Instagram post.
- 13:50This is savage and it's amazing. And I love that this is done by
- 13:53an A list celebrity. So last week, photos of Sydney
- 13:56Sweeney sunbathing in a bikini circulated, published, I think
- 14:00it was by the Daily Mail initially or the Daily
- 14:02Telegraph. And these photos elicited very
- 14:05misogynistic and hateful comments about her body.
- 14:09So Sydney has been training as she is portraying boxer Christy
- 14:12Martin in a biopic. So her body is looking, I guess,
- 14:16different to what people expected to see.
- 14:18And I mean, we've seen her in a bikini before.
- 14:20She's just looking very like muscular, you know, because
- 14:23she's training to be in this biopic about a boxer.
- 14:26The comments under the photos of her in this bikini.
- 14:29So like under the article, we're just like so horrible.
- 14:31It's just like men calling her mid frumpy, a butter face, just
- 14:36being so disgusting about how muscular she's looking.
- 14:40We've heard men call Sydney Sweeney mid before.
- 14:42We've also heard them call Margot Robbie mid.
- 14:45This is like this is what they love to do.
- 14:48They hate to see a woman on top, a woman they would never get in
- 14:521000 million trillion years, a woman who is so beautiful, who
- 14:56is wealthy on her own, who is incredibly successful and also
- 15:00who is not for the male gaze. While Sidney Sweeney is so male
- 15:04gaze coded for this particular role and how she's like quote UN
- 15:08quote like changing her looks for it.
- 15:10This is not related to the male gaze at all.
- 15:12This is not for them. And I think with Barbie, even
- 15:15though that was the the point was like the male gaze, right?
- 15:18That was kind of like the point of the movie.
- 15:20And then Margot or like Barbie moves away from male the male
- 15:23gaze and like realizes the movie was not for them.
- 15:25And they did not like that. They did not like that it
- 15:28criticized the patriarchy, that it made women celebrate
- 15:31womanhood outside of the patriarchy.
- 15:34And so immediately it was like, look at Margot Robbie.
- 15:36She's actually mid Margot Robbie who played literal Barbie like
- 15:40the hottest woman in the entire world, Sydney Sweeney, who you
- 15:43could argue is also one of the hottest women in the entire
- 15:47world too. Just because she is doing
- 15:49something that is not for you. They're just like butter face
- 15:52mid Disgusting. OK, anyways, so Sydney clapped
- 15:57back in the best way. She posted on Instagram today
- 16:01just like this rolling video of the comments including these
- 16:05men's full usernames or even some of them.
- 16:09They're full government names if they use their names to comment
- 16:12on it. And it's honestly the best clap
- 16:15back that she put all of these disgusting men on blast.
- 16:18And I know we've talked occasionally about like when
- 16:21influencers put people's DMS on blast and don't cover up their
- 16:25usernames or don't cover up their handles or their names or
- 16:28whatever. And like, I don't know how I
- 16:30feel about that. But for some reason, this I'm
- 16:32like, good, go for it. Let's do more of this, OK?
- 16:38And the last thing I wanted to talk to you guys about, it's not
- 16:40really a story, but I wanted to share with you this like YouTube
- 16:46video and channel that I think you guys, especially if you like
- 16:50the deep dives on Friday, will really love.
- 16:52And I'm sure a lot of you guys already know about it, but I
- 16:54wanted to shout out the YouTube channel Under Stitch and their
- 16:59sister channel Under Skin. I've been following them since
- 17:02they started a few years ago and they have found some traction.
- 17:05Like I said, I think each channel has maybe at least their
- 17:08fashion channel has over 100,000 subscribers.
- 17:10But Under Stitch is the fashion channel where they breakdown and
- 17:14dissect like the history and the business side of different
- 17:18fashion brands. And then Under Skin is the
- 17:21beauty side of it. So they look into like the
- 17:23business and history of beauty brands.
- 17:25Their content is amazing. They deserve well over a million
- 17:29subscribers. Like I love their content so
- 17:31much. And the reason why I wanted to
- 17:33specifically shout them out today is because over the
- 17:35weekend they published a comprehensive history of the
- 17:38fashion brand Lueve. It's over 2 1/2 hours long and
- 17:42the level of research that went into this is astounding.
- 17:47The brand actually has very limited documented history.
- 17:50There are no books on the history of Lueve apparently.
- 17:54And to make this video, which the creator claims is the most
- 17:57comprehensive retelling of the history of the brand ever
- 18:00written, which I do believe the creator interviewed tons of
- 18:04people in fashion, people within the brand researchers like it is
- 18:09so in depth. Their content is always
- 18:11impressive but like this particular video is so
- 18:13impressive and like I said, if you guys like our deep dives and
- 18:18you guys will miss us miss me over the break, then definitely
- 18:21check out this channel. I think it will scratch that
- 18:24itch for you. Times 1000.
- 18:26This is not sponsored. I have no idea who is behind
- 18:28these channels. I just love these channels and
- 18:31that video was so impressive to me and I was like I need to tell
- 18:34everyone about this video and it only has 11,000 views so go
- 18:38watch it. OK guys that's it for mini
- 18:41scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 18:44I love you guys. Please rate review and
- 18:46subscribe. Please star rate US on Spotify.
- 18:49I love you guys and I will talk to you tomorrow.
- 18:52Bye.
