Speaker 1: What's up, everyone, and welcome to another episode of the
• 0:03
Speaker 1: Epstein Chronicles. In this episode, we're going to pick up
• 0:06
Speaker 1: where we left off with the Jess Daly transcript from
• 0:09
Speaker 1: his trip to Congress. Question I'd like to introduce as
• 0:13
Speaker 1: Minority Exhibit Y. An email exchange between you and Mr.
• 0:17
Speaker 1: Epstein dated August 21st, 2008, and an email that you
• 0:21
Speaker 1: sent to Mr. Epstein dated June 20th, 2009. The Bates
• 0:23
Speaker 1: number for the 2008 email exchange is EFTA02- 99999. And
• 0:32
Speaker 1: the Bates number for the 2009 email is EFTA 012-56074.
• 0:39
Speaker 1: In the email exchange from 2008, you write to Mr. Epstein, quote,
• 0:43
Speaker 1: I'm trying to do two deals at the same time,
• 0:46
Speaker 1: buy Dimensional and sell American Century. Does this refer to
• 0:51
Speaker 1: Dimensional Fund Advisors and American Century companies? Answer, yes. Question,
• 0:57
Speaker 1: what were these deals? Answer, We were talking with the
• 1:00
Speaker 1: owner of Dimensional about potentially buying the firm and merging it,
• 1:03
Speaker 1: and potentially I think I was selling American Century to
• 1:06
Speaker 1: fund it or merge with American Century. Question, and J.P.
• 1:11
Speaker 1: Morgan was involved in a mediation with American Century Companies, correct? Answer,
• 1:16
Speaker 1: we owned at one point, we owned American Century Company. Question,
• 1:20
Speaker 1: and there was a mediation later, correct? Answer, there may
• 1:24
Speaker 1: have been, yes. Question, did you typically start ongoing negotiations
• 1:27
Speaker 1: and mediations before they were public? Answer, this was a
• 1:31
Speaker 1: transaction that involved me and the business that I was overseeing.
• 1:35
Speaker 1: As I've said, I went to him for advice and
• 1:37
Speaker 1: his views, but completely trusted that he would not use
• 1:40
Speaker 1: this information for personal gain. Question, in the email from 2009,
• 1:44
Speaker 1: you write to Mr. Epstein, quote, we settled with AmCentury
• 1:49
Speaker 1: details tomorrow. And then you say, quote, thank you for
• 1:51
Speaker 1: your counsel. Answer, yes. Question, So what was that council? Answer,
• 1:57
Speaker 1: I'm not specifically. I don't specifically recall what that council was.
• 2:01
Speaker 1: But there was. This implies that it was involved. Should
• 2:04
Speaker 1: we separate from American Century? How we should do it? Etc.
• 2:09
Speaker 1: And like you would like a consultant or an investment banker,
• 2:12
Speaker 1: I was looking for counsel from Jeffrey Epstein. Question, but
• 2:15
Speaker 1: he wasn't a consultant, was he? Answer, I think he
• 2:18
Speaker 1: advised a lot of people in business, in different and
• 2:21
Speaker 1: different spheres. Question, did you pay him as a consultant? Answer. No,
• 2:25
Speaker 1: I did not. Question. Did JP Morgan pay him as
• 2:29
Speaker 1: a consultant? Answer. No, they did not. Question. I would
• 2:33
Speaker 1: like to introduce as Minority Exhibit Z an email between
• 2:36
Speaker 1: you and Mr. Epstein dated September 26, 2008. Bates number
• 2:41
Speaker 1: is EFTA 0130035. Question. In this email, you write, quote,
• 2:49
Speaker 1: I'm spending a lot of time with Treasury. The private
• 2:52
Speaker 1: bank has brought in $ 44 billion in the last two weeks. Unreal.
• 2:56
Speaker 1: Why did you tell Mr. Epstein that you were spending
• 2:58
Speaker 1: a lot of time with Treasury? Answer. This was during
• 3:03
Speaker 1: the financial crisis of 2008. Obviously, I was going on financially, globally,
• 3:09
Speaker 1: and around the world. I was working with U.S. Treasury
• 3:11
Speaker 1: in my capacity at J.P. Morgan. And again, I would
• 3:15
Speaker 1: use Epstein as to get his advice and thoughts on
• 3:18
Speaker 1: issues like this that I was facing. Question, would you
• 3:22
Speaker 1: agree that the information about how much JP Morgan's private
• 3:25
Speaker 1: bank brought in over the course of two years or
• 3:28
Speaker 1: two weeks is confidential? Answer, I don't believe. I think
• 3:32
Speaker 1: I could share that with someone that I was seeking
• 3:33
Speaker 1: advice from. Question, even if that person is not retained
• 3:37
Speaker 1: by JP Morgan in any capacity? Answer, again, I think
• 3:42
Speaker 1: I did. I was using him as a source of
• 3:44
Speaker 1: advice and views on the market. And, you know, that
• 3:47
Speaker 1: was a very stressful time. So I was not paying him.
• 3:50
Speaker 1: but I was using him as an advisor at the time. Question,
• 3:54
Speaker 1: in the next paragraph, you write, quote, also, do you
• 3:56
Speaker 1: know Sheldon Adelson? I'm throwing him out of the bank
• 3:59
Speaker 1: on Monday. You spelled it throwing, T-H-R-O-U-F-G-H-I-N-G. Did you mean throwing? Answer,
• 4:09
Speaker 1: we exited Sheldon Adelson as a client. Question, you're not
• 4:12
Speaker 1: asking Mr. Epstein for advice here, though. You're just sharing information. Answer, no,
• 4:17
Speaker 1: I'm asking him whether he knows Sheldon Adelson. And I
• 4:20
Speaker 1: don't know whether there were follow-up questions or not. Question,
• 4:23
Speaker 1: so your testimony here is not that you're just sharing
• 4:27
Speaker 1: an extremely confidential piece of information with Mr. Epstein, but
• 4:31
Speaker 1: even though you don't ask him for any, you don't
• 4:33
Speaker 1: ask him for any advice or counsel, he gets cut
• 4:36
Speaker 1: off by Staley. I asked him whether he knows Sheldon Adelson. Question,
• 4:41
Speaker 1: and you read that as looking for Mr. Epstein's advice
• 4:44
Speaker 1: or counsel on a decision that you've already made? Answer, potentially. Question,
• 4:49
Speaker 1: Why would you need his advice or counsel on a
• 4:51
Speaker 1: decision that you've already made? Answer, I don't need it,
• 4:55
Speaker 1: but I might want it. Question, on a decision you've
• 4:58
Speaker 1: already made? Answer, yeah. Question, would you agree that information
• 5:02
Speaker 1: about a client's status at a bank is confidential? Answer, yeah, confidential,
• 5:08
Speaker 1: but I believe as a senior officer of the bank,
• 5:11
Speaker 1: I've got the right to use confidential information where I
• 5:14
Speaker 1: think it's appropriate. Question, I would like to introduce as
• 5:17
Speaker 1: minority exhibit, double A. An email chain between you and Mr.
• 5:22
Speaker 1: Epstein dated October 8, 2008. Question. In the first email
• 5:26
Speaker 1: of the chain, you write, quote, I just gave an
• 5:29
Speaker 1: idea to the Fed and Jamie that might help the
• 5:32
Speaker 1: financial markets in a big way. Both thought it was brilliant.
• 5:35
Speaker 1: You're referring to the Federal Reserve here, correct? Answer, yes,
• 5:38
Speaker 1: I am. Question. Why did you share information about your
• 5:42
Speaker 1: conversation with the Federal Reserve and J.P. Morgan, CEO, with Mr. Epstein?
• 5:49
Speaker 1: Answer again, this was a very, very stressful time in
• 5:52
Speaker 1: the market. I was using Epstein's knowledge and judgment, and
• 5:56
Speaker 1: so I was sharing information with him as we're trying
• 5:58
Speaker 1: to navigate these very difficult times. Question, Mr. Epstein responds
• 6:03
Speaker 1: with some thoughts about financial markets. And then you reply, quote,
• 6:07
Speaker 1: I'm dealing with the Fed on an idea to solve things.
• 6:10
Speaker 1: I need a smart friend to help me think through
• 6:12
Speaker 1: this stuff. Can I get you out for a weekend
• 6:14
Speaker 1: to help me? Was that the same brilliant idea you
• 6:18
Speaker 1: referred to earlier? Answer, I believe this was the same
• 6:21
Speaker 1: idea that I referred to earlier. Question, Mr. Epstein was
• 6:25
Speaker 1: incarcerated at this point, correct? Answer, yeah. Question, when you wrote, quote,
• 6:30
Speaker 1: get you out for a weekend, you mean out of
• 6:32
Speaker 1: the Palm Beach County Stockade, correct? Answer, yes. Question, and
• 6:37
Speaker 1: when you wrote, quote, are they listening? You were asking
• 6:40
Speaker 1: whether Mr. Epstein's emails were being monitored, correct? Answer, it
• 6:43
Speaker 1: seems that way, yes. Question, did that strike you as
• 6:46
Speaker 1: problematic to be asking a convicted sex offender? If you
• 6:50
Speaker 1: could get him out for a weekend so that he
• 6:52
Speaker 1: could share your idea you gave to the Federal Reserve
• 6:55
Speaker 1: and JP Morgan CEO? Answer again. Epstein had very interesting
• 7:00
Speaker 1: insights to the financial markets. It was a very difficult
• 7:03
Speaker 1: time in those markets and I thought that I could
• 7:05
Speaker 1: benefit from getting his thoughts with respect to what I
• 7:08
Speaker 1: was thinking of doing with the Fed. Question. I would
• 7:13
Speaker 1: like to introduce Minority Exhibit AB, an email from Brian
• 7:16
Speaker 1: Sankey to you. Copying Hanny Deeb's Dated November 28th, 2009.
• 7:22
Speaker 1: You forward this email to Mr. Epstein the next day saying, quote,
• 7:26
Speaker 1: please use with discretion. The Bates number is EFTA 02410534. Question, Mr.
• 7:36
Speaker 1: Sankey and Mr. Debs were executives at JP Morgan, correct? Answer,
• 7:40
Speaker 1: let me read the email. Question, if you need more
• 7:43
Speaker 1: time to review, we can pause and go off record. Answer, yes, please.
• 7:47
Speaker 1: So they go off. Now they're back on. Question, I'll
• 7:50
Speaker 1: repeat my earlier question. Mr. Sankey and Mr. Deeb's were
• 7:54
Speaker 1: executives at J.P. Morgan, correct? Answer, yes. Question, what was Mr.
• 7:59
  Speaker 1: Sankey's role in 2009? Answer, I don't know. Question, what
• 8:03
Speaker 1: was Mr. Deeb's role in 2009? Answer, I don't remember. Question,
• 8:09
Speaker 1: in the email, Mr. Sankey notes he's responding to quote
• 8:12
Speaker 1: your question and then shares information about discussions with the
• 8:15
Speaker 1: government officials in the United Arab Emirates. including one who, quote,
• 8:20
Speaker 1: reports directly to the Crown Prince. Do you remember what
• 8:23
Speaker 1: this email was about? Answer, no. Question, did you ask Mr.
• 8:27
Speaker 1: Sankey for this information so that you could share it
• 8:30
Speaker 1: with Mr. Epstein? Answer, no. Question, you don't remember this email,
• 8:35
Speaker 1: but you remember that you didn't ask Mr. Sankey for
• 8:37
Speaker 1: the information so that you could share it with Mr. Epstein? Answer,
• 8:42
Speaker 1: I don't think I would ask for information so that
• 8:44
Speaker 1: I could share it with Epstein. Question, it does appear, though,
• 8:48
Speaker 1: that you expected Mr. Epstein to use the information given
• 8:52
Speaker 1: that you said, quote, please use with discretion. Answer, as
• 8:56
Speaker 1: I said, I used Epstein as an advisor. It's possible
• 9:01
Speaker 1: that I shared this to get Epstein's thoughts as to
• 9:04
Speaker 1: what I should do. Question, do you have any recollection
• 9:08
Speaker 1: of why Mr. Epstein would have been interested in this information? Answer,
• 9:12
Speaker 1: he was very involved with Middle East and very involved
• 9:15
Speaker 1: with Dubai. Question, do you have any recollection of how
• 9:18
Speaker 1: you expected Mr. Epstein to use the information? Answer again.
• 9:23
Speaker 1: I expected him to give his counsel as to how
• 9:25
Speaker 1: I might deal with Dubai with respect to this information. Question.
• 9:30
Speaker 1: I'd like to introduce as Minority Exhibit AC an email
• 9:34
Speaker 1: from you to Mr. Epstein on July 20th, 2015. The
• 9:36
Speaker 1: Bates number is EFTA 00850787. In the email, you say, quote,
• 9:39
Speaker 1: the CEO wants to meet. And Mr. Epstein responds, quote,
• 9:49
Speaker 1: I'm home. You were pursuing the role of CEO at
• 9:52
Speaker 1: Barclays at this point, correct? In July of 2015? Answer, yes. Question,
• 9:58
Speaker 1: and you kept Mr. Epstein up to date. on all
• 10:00
Speaker 1: the steps of the process, correct? Answer, correct. Question. By
• 10:05
Speaker 1: October 2015, there were discussions underway about the need for
• 10:09
Speaker 1: your employer, at the time, Blue Mountain Capital, to refrain
• 10:13
Speaker 1: from trading in Barclays shares, correct? Answer, correct. Question. And
• 10:18
Speaker 1: this was because the information about you going to Barclays was,
• 10:21
Speaker 1: as you admitted, before the Financial Conduct Authority, quote, reasonably
• 10:26
Speaker 1: market sensitive, correct? Answer, correct. Question, so why did you
• 10:31
Speaker 1: share this market sensitive information with Mr. Epstein? Answer, obviously
• 10:37
Speaker 1: it was a major step in my personal career. And
• 10:40
Speaker 1: I use him as an advisor in that capacity. So
• 10:42
Speaker 1: I was sharing my discussion with Barclays with him to
• 10:45
Speaker 1: get his counsel. Question, do you regret sharing all this
• 10:48
Speaker 1: information with Mr. Epstein? Answer, no. Question, would you agree
• 10:53
Speaker 1: that you played a significant role in helping Mr. Epstein
• 10:56
Speaker 1: maintain legitimacy after his conviction? Answer, I think he had
• 11:00
Speaker 1: a very broad network with dozens and dozens of people
• 11:03
Speaker 1: that he used to try to maintain his legitimacy. Question,
• 11:07
Speaker 1: but you're a part of that network, weren't you? Answer,
• 11:10
Speaker 1: but I was part of that network. Question, so you
• 11:12
Speaker 1: dispute that you played a significant role in helping him
• 11:16
Speaker 1: maintain the legitimacy after his conviction. Answer again. I was
• 11:19
Speaker 1: part of that network. I'm not sure I would characterize
• 11:22
Speaker 1: it as significant. There were a lot of influential people
• 11:25
Speaker 1: involved in his network. Question. Mr. Staley, we spoke earlier
• 11:29
Speaker 1: about you visiting Mr. Epstein in his office at the
• 11:33
Speaker 1: Florida Science Foundation when he was on work release. Answer. Right. Question. Yes.
• 11:38
Speaker 1: Did you ever visit Mr. Epstein at the Palm Beach Stockade? Answer. No,
• 11:43
Speaker 1: I did not. Question. And as you know, Mr. Epstein
• 11:46
Speaker 1: was on house arrest for a year following his incarceration.
• 11:50
Speaker 1: This was from roughly July 2009 through July 2010. And
• 11:55
Speaker 1: this required him to stay in Palm Beach. Did you
• 11:57
Speaker 1: ever visit Mr. Epstein? Answer. Wasn't the house arrest it
• 12:01
Speaker 1: was out of Palm Beach, but then he moved that
• 12:03
Speaker 1: house arrest to New York? Question. So that was going
• 12:06
Speaker 1: to be part of our question for you. Did you
• 12:09
Speaker 1: ever visit Mr. Epstein in Palm Beach when he was
• 12:11
Speaker 1: on house arrest? Answer. No. Question. No. Did you ever
• 12:15
Speaker 1: visit him anywhere else while he was on house arrest?
• 12:19
Speaker 1: Answer in New York. That one facility where the sheriff
• 12:22
Speaker 1: was there. And then New York. Question in the Florida
• 12:25
Speaker 1: Science Foundation. Answer yes. Question and then in New York.
• 12:29
Speaker 1: Where in New York? Answer is townhouse. All right, folks,
• 12:32
Speaker 1: we're going to wrap up right here. And in the
• 12:33
Speaker 1: next episode dealing with the topic, we're going to pick
• 12:36
Speaker 1: up where we left off. All the information that goes
• 12:38
Speaker 1: with this episode can be found in the description box.
