- 0:06Speaker 1: Happy Friday, Happy Hall of Fame weekend, and welcome back
- 0:08Speaker 1: to Cardinal Territory. I'm your host, Katie Wu here with
- 0:11Speaker 1: some familiar faces you might recognize, Chip Carrey, Brad Thompson,
- 0:15Speaker 1: voice of the Cardinals television broadcast, to join me. Gentlemen,
- 0:19Speaker 1: how are you. Thank you for coming on the show.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Hi, Katie, Thank you for having us. Katie, it must
- 0:25Speaker 2: be deep into the season. You've ran through everybody. Somebody
- 0:29Speaker 2: said no, and Chip and I got to be involved.
- 0:31Speaker 3: So thank you.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Well, you know I did say when we started, right
- 0:34Speaker 1: before we started recording, let's be great, and Brad, I
- 0:37Speaker 1: believe you shook your head no. So we're all, oharty perfect.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Yeah, we're sitting the bar where it needs to be.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Look, it's the beginning of September. We've done this for
- 0:46Speaker 1: five months. I think we're all just in survival mode
- 0:49Speaker 1: and just trying to get through the day.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Right we look at you.
- 0:52Speaker 4: Yeah, let's just say we've had some challenges over the
- 0:55Speaker 4: last few weeks, but look, the twenty one games left,
- 0:59Speaker 4: the Cardinals have a change finish over five hundred, have
- 1:01Speaker 4: a chance to impact the playoff race and still have
- 1:03Speaker 4: a chance to check out the proverbial runway for some
- 1:06Speaker 4: of these guys. So we'll see how things transpire here
- 1:09Speaker 4: over the final three and a half weeks.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Perfect Perfect Brad's like, all right, Chip's got it, and
- 1:15Speaker 1: I'm just going to sit here and look pretty amazing.
- 1:18Speaker 5: You know what.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I think at this point of the season, fans are well,
- 1:22Speaker 1: they're well familiar with the dynamic between you two in
- 1:25Speaker 1: the broadcast booth. What they might not see or know
- 1:29Speaker 1: is just what exactly goes on behind the scenes of
- 1:32Speaker 1: a Cardinal's television broadcast. I am so lucky to be
- 1:36Speaker 1: able to waltz in there every day, eat your snacks,
- 1:38Speaker 1: and leave. But for you guys, when you're doing your
- 1:41Speaker 1: prep and you're doing your work, what's the preparation like
- 1:45Speaker 1: behind the broadcast? And then how do you pass the time?
- 1:48Speaker 1: Because from what I may or may not have seen,
- 1:50Speaker 1: there are some extracurriculars in the booth that you could
- 1:53Speaker 1: maybe entertain with.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Yeah, like that.
- 1:54Speaker 2: You could go a lot of directions with that part
- 1:56Speaker 2: of it. But I would say this, and Chip, I
- 1:59Speaker 2: know this is your life too. Look, I think the
- 2:01Speaker 2: preparation for games, I don't think it ever ends, right,
- 2:05Speaker 2: You're kind of always watching stuff. You're always reading stuff,
- 2:09Speaker 2: and that part of it always goes. Certainly you're gonna
- 2:11Speaker 2: dig in on whoever the opposition is, what all the
- 2:14Speaker 2: stuff is around the league, and you're gonna be prepared
- 2:16Speaker 2: coming in. I like to still prepare as if I
- 2:20Speaker 2: were pitching against the opposing lineup, So a lot of
- 2:22Speaker 2: times that I'll dig into that how I would get
- 2:25Speaker 2: somebody out with somebody else's stuff, which is so much
- 2:28Speaker 2: better than mine and way easier when you're digging into
- 2:31Speaker 2: stuff like that. But once all that's done, Chip, there
- 2:35Speaker 2: is a time to when we get to work, it's
- 2:38Speaker 2: family there. I mean, we've got such a great group
- 2:41Speaker 2: of people that we have the opportunity to work with
- 2:43Speaker 2: every day, that help us get on air, that just
- 2:45Speaker 2: help us do everything, and it's a great place to be.
- 2:49Speaker 2: I think we're very fortunate getting a chance to do
- 2:51Speaker 2: what we do. And then yeah, do we have pac Man,
- 2:53Speaker 2: Papa shot multi game videos, darts are maybe they're coming,
- 2:59Speaker 2: might be a little dangerous, but ship there's a lot
- 3:01Speaker 2: going on in the boot.
- 3:02Speaker 6: Well you hit it on the head. It's family.
- 3:04Speaker 4: We spend more time with each other, frankly than we
- 3:06Speaker 4: do with our loved ones, and that's just the nature
- 3:08Speaker 4: of the job.
- 3:09Speaker 6: I think you hit it on.
- 3:10Speaker 4: The head too, Brad, that the people we work with
- 3:12Speaker 4: are not just coworkers, they're dear friends. This is the
- 3:15Speaker 4: first job that I've ever had in this business, and
- 3:18Speaker 4: as you guys know, I'm the old guy and this
- 3:19Speaker 4: trio of people on the digital screen where a game
- 3:23Speaker 4: is over, and I'm actually mad. And I'm mad not
- 3:26Speaker 4: because the Cardinals won or lost, or something crazy happened,
- 3:30Speaker 4: or I messed up on the air as something didn't
- 3:32Speaker 4: go right with the broadcast. I'm mad because I don't
- 3:34Speaker 4: get to hang out with my friends for the next
- 3:36Speaker 4: eighteen hours.
- 3:36Speaker 6: And I think that's what makes our place so special.
- 3:38Speaker 4: There's a great deal of care and camaraderie, and we
- 3:41Speaker 4: really do like each other, love each other, and treat
- 3:44Speaker 4: each other as family members because as I said, we
- 3:46Speaker 4: spend so much quality time together and we get to
- 3:48Speaker 4: know each other on a really, really deeper level than just.
- 3:51Speaker 6: Hey what tie you wear? And you're hey, what did
- 3:53Speaker 6: you write in the athletic today? And I think that's
- 3:55Speaker 6: really really important. I hope that people at home.
- 3:56Speaker 4: Understand that that we are as committed to each other
- 3:59Speaker 4: as we are heart to the product that we're presenting
- 4:01Speaker 4: at home, and even on the days when the product
- 4:03Speaker 4: is not as good as we would like it to be,
- 4:06Speaker 4: we're still showing up, as Brad said, doing our research,
- 4:08Speaker 4: doing our homework, and trying to bring the experience of
- 4:11Speaker 4: Cardinal Baseball, and even if it's not good, Cardon Baseball,
- 4:14Speaker 4: major League Baseball into their living rooms because we're guests
- 4:16Speaker 4: and we really understand the enormous responsibility that that job
- 4:20Speaker 4: has and the real honor that it is to sit
- 4:22Speaker 4: in those chairs.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Spot on, and I couldn't agree more. Obviously, you guys
- 4:26Speaker 1: know how I feel about you. I won't get sentimental
- 4:28Speaker 1: on the broadcast, but it is it's very clear when
- 4:32Speaker 1: you walk into your booth that everyone from Kim who
- 4:36Speaker 1: does all the incredible work behind the scenes, Shapiro, your
- 4:38Speaker 1: your producer, from Ricky to Alexa go down the list
- 4:42Speaker 1: like it is just so so great. And you know, here,
- 4:44Speaker 1: I am not even mentioning Jim Hayes, which I would
- 4:47Speaker 1: keep the darts away from him because maybe not the
- 4:50Speaker 1: most observant. I can see him coming into the booth
- 4:52Speaker 1: all frazzled about something and dart immediately to the forehead.
- 4:56Speaker 1: So I'm yeah, we talked about the same. Jim love
- 5:00Speaker 1: it of Hayes. I'm not sure how the dartboard would
- 5:03Speaker 1: work out, especially when you add in the smoke machine,
- 5:06Speaker 1: you know, the fog machine, the strobe lights. Safety hazard perhaps,
- 5:11Speaker 1: but you guys will master the walking treadmill, so what
- 5:14Speaker 1: do I know about safety?
- 5:15Speaker 2: No, that's a good call, and let's be honest, Chip,
- 5:17Speaker 2: the treadmill has not been used much this year.
- 5:19Speaker 3: It's more of it's hanging on, leaning up against the wall.
- 5:22Speaker 2: And the fog machine maybe wasn't as thought out as
- 5:28Speaker 2: we went on Amazon and just bought this thing. But
- 5:31Speaker 2: day one, as you know, Katie, of the fog machine,
- 5:34Speaker 2: I turned it on and hit it hard. I'm like,
- 5:37Speaker 2: let's do it. Boom the whole place it looked like
- 5:39Speaker 2: Scooby Doo. Okay, jumping out of the mystery machine. Turns
- 5:43Speaker 2: out though the air it funneled under the door and
- 5:47Speaker 2: then the whole media hallway looked like there was a fire.
- 5:50Speaker 2: And that's when a Cardinals' front office executive came in
- 5:54Speaker 2: opened the door and he goes, this is not good,
- 5:57Speaker 2: and I agree, well, we'll fix it.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Sorry, so we don't use it as much anymore.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Yeah, we have to break it out.
- 6:05Speaker 6: By the way, Katie, we have to figure out what
- 6:07Speaker 6: your entrance music will be.
- 6:08Speaker 4: We were music videos for everybody when they come in,
- 6:11Speaker 4: do the fog machine, open the door, have the strobe
- 6:13Speaker 4: lights going and we you know we haven't.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Done that yet.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Well yeah, I think the last time we used the
- 6:19Speaker 1: fog machine was the flow Ride a concert for obvious reasons.
- 6:22Speaker 1: So let me think about that. We have time. We
- 6:24Speaker 1: only have a homestand and a half left, but we
- 6:27Speaker 1: can definitely make that final full homestand as entertaining as possible,
- 6:31Speaker 1: at least for us. I'm not sure about the product
- 6:32Speaker 1: on the field. For us, we are going to have
- 6:35Speaker 1: a great time. But I do want to hear your guys'
- 6:37Speaker 1: thoughts about the Cardinals and how you know, twenty one
- 6:40Speaker 1: games left, not a lot in this transition runway season,
- 6:44Speaker 1: however you want to call it. So let's hit our
- 6:47Speaker 1: Draftking segment, our players to watch, so we can maybe
- 6:50Speaker 1: talk about the players that you guys would like to
- 6:52Speaker 1: see finished the season. So we'll hear from DraftKings are back. Okay,
- 7:00Speaker 1: that was that was way shorter than I thought it
- 7:02Speaker 1: was going to be I thought we had time to reset.
- 7:04Speaker 1: But okay, all right, my bad.
- 7:09Speaker 3: That was a good problem. I like it so short.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Okay, our prayer to watch the segment presented by DraftKings.
- 7:17Speaker 1: I'm just not going to talk with this one because
- 7:18Speaker 1: clearly this is too much responsibility for me. Whether it's
- 7:22Speaker 1: Jordan Walker, whether it's Nolan Morman or Lars Newfar, take
- 7:25Speaker 1: your pick. We have twenty six to thirty five players
- 7:28Speaker 1: on who are watching to finish the season, especially with
- 7:31Speaker 1: the call ups coming up. Jimmy Crooks, who's our preeto?
- 7:33Speaker 1: You have some guys coming back, Donovan Burlison, Nolan Arnato
- 7:36Speaker 1: was supposed to be at the ballpark today. I'll start
- 7:39Speaker 1: with you, Chip, as you are looking for to see
- 7:41Speaker 1: the Cardinals close out the regular season. Who are you
- 7:44Speaker 1: looking at to maybe give you some some faith or
- 7:46Speaker 1: some inspiration as they head into next season.
- 7:48Speaker 4: Yeah, I'll talk to the guys that I think have
- 7:50Speaker 4: answered questions this year. I'll start without at Earlson. I
- 7:52Speaker 4: think this guy's turned to a major league hitter. He
- 7:54Speaker 4: knows how to hit the things the Cardinals wanted him
- 7:56Speaker 4: to focus on, and that is parts of the strike
- 7:59Speaker 4: zone and pitches that he could do damage with. He's
- 8:01Speaker 4: done a really really good job of that. He's been
- 8:03Speaker 4: terrific in the outfield when he's played first base, DH,
- 8:06Speaker 4: I think he's done an outstanding job.
- 8:08Speaker 6: I think he has.
- 8:09Speaker 4: Definitely solidified himself as a guy the Cardinals can keep
- 8:12Speaker 4: and build around. And it's funny, if you think back
- 8:15Speaker 4: to spring training, a lot of us are wondering, well, how.
- 8:17Speaker 6: Does Burlison fit on this team?
- 8:18Speaker 4: Ever since talk that maybe he would have to start
- 8:20Speaker 4: the year in Memphis, and he didn't, and obviously the
- 8:22Speaker 4: Cardinals are happy that that's the case. So I'm really
- 8:25Speaker 4: really happy for him. As far as guys that I
- 8:27Speaker 4: still need to see more, quite frankly, Jordan Walker.
- 8:29Speaker 6: That's been talked about a lot.
- 8:31Speaker 4: I know over the last couple of weeks, the numbers
- 8:32Speaker 4: of the last month have not been good. OLLI and
- 8:36Speaker 4: Brent Brown who said we've got to see improvement, We've
- 8:38Speaker 4: got to see some growth here because there is not
- 8:42Speaker 4: an infinite runway for these guys, Nolan Gorman.
- 8:45Speaker 6: Is Nolan Gorman's run.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Here indicative of what he's going to do over one
- 8:49Speaker 4: hundred and fifty games, or.
- 8:51Speaker 6: Is this one of those peak and Valley kind of
- 8:53Speaker 6: runs that we've seen him go on. I don't know.
- 8:55Speaker 4: I think he's bad been a lot better defensively a
- 8:58Speaker 4: third base over the last two weeks after really rough start.
- 9:01Speaker 6: To the month of August. But obviously the.
- 9:03Speaker 4: Potential is there, the power is there, and that's something
- 9:05Speaker 4: you obviously can't teach. So for me, Gorman and Walker
- 9:09Speaker 4: not surprising one of the two guys that I think
- 9:11Speaker 4: we still have to say the jury's out on as
- 9:13Speaker 4: to what they're gonna do for the Cardinals going forward
- 9:16Speaker 4: next year and next spring.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Yeah, and look at those are two very good ones
- 9:20Speaker 2: because you think about young nucleus, right, but what the
- 9:22Speaker 2: Cardinals drafted first round expectations through the roof, we'll find out.
- 9:27Speaker 2: So I like that direction. I could go a few
- 9:29Speaker 2: different directions too with position players, because as you mentioned, Katie,
- 9:32Speaker 2: there's a lot of them, there's a lot of different guys.
- 9:34Speaker 2: But I will go to the other side down the stretch,
- 9:38Speaker 2: and if Chip's going to break the rules by taking
- 9:39Speaker 2: two players, what the heck. I'm going to break the
- 9:41Speaker 2: rules by taking two players as well. And I'm gonna
- 9:44Speaker 2: go with Matthew Libertoor who was fantastic last time out
- 9:48Speaker 2: against the A's and I'm going Michael McGreevy because there's
- 9:51Speaker 2: no way around it. Cardinals need way better starting pitching
- 9:54Speaker 2: that's been It's honestly, when you look at the record
- 9:56Speaker 2: being what it is right now, it's pretty incredible with
- 9:58Speaker 2: the starting pitching, with the numbers that have been put
- 10:00Speaker 2: up that they have won as many games as they had.
- 10:03Speaker 2: That's going to be one of the biggest keys this
- 10:05Speaker 2: offseason is where do they find it? Like, how do
- 10:08Speaker 2: you take some of these pieces, probably trade for some
- 10:11Speaker 2: starters or at least some prospects that are on their way.
- 10:14Speaker 2: So for me, Michael Michael McGreevy has done a really
- 10:16Speaker 2: good job in his limited duty. This dude knows how
- 10:19Speaker 2: to pitch. He's got poised beyond these years. I want
- 10:21Speaker 2: to see how he finishes this big league season. And
- 10:24Speaker 2: then for Matthew Libertor, they gave him the opportunity in
- 10:30Speaker 2: spring to be a starter and it has been wired
- 10:33Speaker 2: to wire at this point. He's been able to stay healthy. Yeah,
- 10:36Speaker 2: there's been the ups and downs. The first twelve starts
- 10:38Speaker 2: for Libby, we're outstanding. The next twelve it was a
- 10:42Speaker 2: mixed bag. Now we're starting to see some of the
- 10:44Speaker 2: good stuff. I want to see what it looks like
- 10:46Speaker 2: at the end. Is he maintaining his velocity through the
- 10:49Speaker 2: month of September, How does the breaking stuff look? How
- 10:52Speaker 2: sharp is the slider of his Can he drop in
- 10:54Speaker 2: that hammer like he was doing against the A's, like
- 10:58Speaker 2: striking out people left and right. To me, that's one
- 11:01Speaker 2: of the biggest things you traded for this young man
- 11:03Speaker 2: because you believe that he could be a future big
- 11:05Speaker 2: part of your rotation. So those are the two guys
- 11:08Speaker 2: that I'm really interested in down the stretch.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Not at all a surprise. I am in total agreement
- 11:13Speaker 1: with you guys, because we're always so in sync. The
- 11:15Speaker 1: one name I would throw in there because I think
- 11:18Speaker 1: his future will be in plenty of question over the
- 11:21Speaker 1: offseason is Lars new Bar, because you know, I don't
- 11:24Speaker 1: think the main prerogative for Lars Newbar was to stay
- 11:26Speaker 1: healthy this year in minus a three week stint over
- 11:29Speaker 1: the All Star breaks, so he didn't miss three weeks
- 11:31Speaker 1: worth of games. He's done a nice job of staying
- 11:33Speaker 1: on the field, and that again was parlorady number one
- 11:35Speaker 1: for Newfar to show. Would he like better production offensively?
- 11:38Speaker 1: Of course, would he consider this season something that he
- 11:42Speaker 1: is happy with. I don't think so, But I don't
- 11:44Speaker 1: think he went out there and fully failed. But you
- 11:48Speaker 1: do bring into question his long term status with the organization,
- 11:52Speaker 1: because as the Cardinals embark on this rebuild fully, it's
- 11:55Speaker 1: going to be a couple of years before we see
- 11:57Speaker 1: like truly competitive baseball again back in Saint us. Unfortunately
- 12:01Speaker 1: for Lars, he'll be a free agent over after the
- 12:04Speaker 1: next two years. So does he really fit in with
- 12:06Speaker 1: the Cardinal's competitive window from a free agent and rber standpoint,
- 12:10Speaker 1: I don't think so, and I think it's going to
- 12:12Speaker 1: be up to the Cardinals to see do they move
- 12:15Speaker 1: on from him in the offseason because he has a
- 12:16Speaker 1: ton of value. I mean, this is not a player
- 12:18Speaker 1: that has gone out there and really stunk it up.
- 12:20Speaker 1: I think I've always said this. He could be a
- 12:22Speaker 1: very complimentary piece on a postseason team. But will Saint
- 12:27Speaker 1: Lewis want to build around him or will they capitalize
- 12:29Speaker 1: on the value that he has right now to try
- 12:31Speaker 1: and bring in something that can expedite this rebuilt process.
- 12:34Speaker 1: A lot of that will have to do with how
- 12:36Speaker 1: he plays to finish the last three weeks of the season.
- 12:38Speaker 1: I also don't know how much playing time he's going
- 12:40Speaker 1: to get because the Cardinals have like eighteen hundred left
- 12:42Speaker 1: handed outfielders on the roster right now, So we'll get
- 12:45Speaker 1: to see where the Cardinals are really thinking in terms
- 12:48Speaker 1: of who they want to prioritize playing time based on
- 12:50Speaker 1: the rotation of outfielders. So I throw Lars Weobar in
- 12:53Speaker 1: there as well.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that's a fair point, Katie, And I
- 12:55Speaker 4: think one thing that's going to be fascinating is we
- 12:57Speaker 4: have a new baseball operations group taking over right heine
- 13:00Speaker 4: Bloom is not tied in any way, shape or form
- 13:02Speaker 4: to any of the players currently on this major league roster.
- 13:04Speaker 6: So I think you will.
- 13:06Speaker 4: Have the freedom, if I can use that word, to
- 13:09Speaker 4: have make cold calculated decisions as to how to improve
- 13:13Speaker 4: this club. Going back to my Braves experience, everybody knows
- 13:17Speaker 4: that the Braves have been really, really good the last
- 13:19Speaker 4: few years.
- 13:19Speaker 6: They've won the World Series in twenty twenty one.
- 13:22Speaker 4: What they may have forgotten is they went through three
- 13:23Speaker 4: years of a really bad ninety five ninety six lost stretch,
- 13:27Speaker 4: and what they did is something that Cardinals may have
- 13:29Speaker 4: to contemplate. They may have to make some trades up
- 13:32Speaker 4: very popular players, very talented players that they maybe don't
- 13:35Speaker 4: want to do, in order to accelerate this process and
- 13:39Speaker 4: bring back better talent as far as what they don't have.
- 13:42Speaker 4: And at Brad's point, that's pitching. You win with pitching,
- 13:45Speaker 4: and if you don't have it, you have no chance.
- 13:47Speaker 4: And I agree one hundred percent with what Brad said.
- 13:49Speaker 4: For this Cardinals team, who's staff era is around five
- 13:52Speaker 4: since the All Star Break, to be within a game
- 13:54Speaker 4: of five hundred is a really amazing story that Ali
- 13:57Speaker 4: and Dusty Blake I have done this year. And the
- 13:59Speaker 4: fact that none of these got as you've gotten hurt
- 14:01Speaker 4: is also incredibly impressive. I can't remember grad a season
- 14:04Speaker 4: where a starting rotation made all of it starts without
- 14:07Speaker 4: a single guy knocked on wood, going on the eel.
- 14:09Speaker 6: It's pretty amazing.
- 14:11Speaker 3: No, No, you're absolutely right.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Look, they've been very fortunate to that front, and look
- 14:16Speaker 2: at that. You credit the guys for putting in the work,
- 14:19Speaker 2: the training staff, the performance that they've done a really
- 14:21Speaker 2: good job. But at the end of the day, you
- 14:23Speaker 2: need more results, right, So that's going to be the
- 14:26Speaker 2: really interesting part going forward, Katie, I totally agree with
- 14:28Speaker 2: the Lars new Bar stuff, and not just Newt in general,
- 14:32Speaker 2: but look new regime under hind Bloom. You're probably listening
- 14:36Speaker 2: on a little bit of everybody and you're trying to
- 14:38Speaker 2: figure out what everybody else thinks about your players. And
- 14:43Speaker 2: I'm sure that they've already been doing this. They did
- 14:45Speaker 2: this at the trade deadline. I'm sure that there were
- 14:47Speaker 2: some deals that were kicked around, not done outside of
- 14:49Speaker 2: the three relievers that the Cardinals parted ways with. But
- 14:53Speaker 2: that's going to be a big part of it is

- 17:05Speaker 1: That's a promo exactly all right. Speaking to promos, you guys,
- 17:09Speaker 1: we have something to promote of yours next homestand Chip
- 17:14Speaker 1: and Brad you have launched the twenty twenty five Feed
- 17:16Speaker 1: the Future initiative and this will be taking place on
- 17:20Speaker 1: September nineteenth, Chip, why don't you direct us to how
- 17:24Speaker 1: you came across this idea, what fans can expect and
- 17:27Speaker 1: how can they be involved in this charitable event next homestand.
- 17:30Speaker 6: Yeah, this is the Feed the Future initiative.
- 17:32Speaker 4: I think all of us who are fortunate enough to
- 17:34Speaker 4: work in Major League Baseball realize how lou who we are,
- 17:36Speaker 4: how blessed we are to get to do what we
- 17:39Speaker 4: do and work with the people that we work with.
- 17:43Speaker 4: We live in a community that is suffering drastically from
- 17:46Speaker 4: food insecurity, and school has started. Their kids that are
- 17:49Speaker 4: going to school in the city of Saint Louis, who
- 17:52Speaker 4: don't get three square meals a day, they're lucky.
- 17:54Speaker 6: To get one meal a day if that.
- 17:56Speaker 4: And our Feed the Future initiative, which I'm so grateful
- 17:59Speaker 4: for Brad joining us, will take place at Operation Food
- 18:02Speaker 4: Search from ten to twelve on September nineteenth. We're getting
- 18:05Speaker 4: fans involved. It's kind of a team building exercise. We're
- 18:08Speaker 4: going to package meals for our friends and fellow citizens
- 18:12Speaker 4: in need here in the city of Saint Louis. This
- 18:14Speaker 4: is something that Brad and I got to do a
- 18:16Speaker 4: couple of years ago of Kyle Gibson. We went down
- 18:18Speaker 4: to Phoenix, Arizona with his Big League, Bigly Impact group
- 18:26Speaker 4: and really was onspiring to see how major league athletes
- 18:30Speaker 4: who are blessed with great talent and great financial resources
- 18:33Speaker 4: spending time to pack meals for people in other countries,
- 18:36Speaker 4: other communities that they are never ever going to meet,
- 18:39Speaker 4: and it just really made an impact on me. Then, look,
- 18:41Speaker 4: I've got time. It's two hours of our time. Let's
- 18:44Speaker 4: try to find a way to help those of us
- 18:46Speaker 4: who need it most, especially this time a year, and
- 18:48Speaker 4: especially for the kids the future. Youngsters will go to
- 18:51Speaker 4: a school without something in their bellies, can't learn, can't
- 18:53Speaker 4: be successful. And hopefully Cardinal Nation will want support the
- 18:57Speaker 4: project to join us on the nineteenth.
- 19:00Speaker 2: If you go to Cardinals dot com slash feed the Future.
- 19:02Speaker 2: That's Cardinals dot com slash feed the Future. That's where
- 19:05Speaker 2: you can you can donate. They're looking for, you know,
- 19:08Speaker 2: donations of five dollars or more. If you donate at
- 19:11Speaker 2: least two hundred dollars, you can pack meals alongside with us.
- 19:15Speaker 2: And just to echo what Chip said, Look, I've had
- 19:18Speaker 2: the opportunity over the years to go to schools in
- 19:22Speaker 2: communities that need help and talk to kids and be
- 19:25Speaker 2: around kids and being around groups and there's a need
- 19:28Speaker 2: and it's it's sometimes and hopefully anybody watching this that
- 19:31Speaker 2: you don't have to deal with it food insecurity, but
- 19:34Speaker 2: it's real, it's tangible, and people need help, and there's
- 19:38Speaker 2: no shame in needing help, honestly, the only shame is
- 19:40Speaker 2: if you can help, not helping somebody else. And Ship
- 19:43Speaker 2: That's why I'm so excited that you got this thing going.
- 19:46Speaker 2: I know this is something that it was on your
- 19:48Speaker 2: heart you wanted to champion, So I'm excited to be
- 19:51Speaker 2: a part of it. Hopefully a lot of people come
- 19:53Speaker 2: join us, and and this isn't going to be just
- 19:56Speaker 2: a one time thing either.
- 19:57Speaker 3: This is going to be something where.
- 19:59Speaker 2: I know, Chip, you've talked about this with different partners,
- 20:02Speaker 2: but making it something where it is a constant effort
- 20:06Speaker 2: through the Cardinals who have already done a lot of
- 20:08Speaker 2: stuff to help out, through us, through as many people
- 20:11Speaker 2: as we can get involved, So please do that. Go
- 20:13Speaker 2: to Cardinals dot com, slash feed the Future.
- 20:16Speaker 1: And you know Cardinals. This is part of the Cardinals
- 20:18Speaker 1: Care which I think all three of us were at
- 20:20Speaker 1: Cardinals Care Ted Savage RBA Classic Golf Tournament on Thursday.
- 20:23Speaker 1: The Cardinals continue to do such great charitable outreach in
- 20:27Speaker 1: and around the Saint Louis area, and for you guys
- 20:29Speaker 1: to do this, I think is very exciting for fans
- 20:32Speaker 1: who want to know. In more information, you can donate
- 20:34Speaker 1: five dollars or more to support Operation Food Search. Fans
- 20:38Speaker 1: eighteen or older who donate two hundred dollars or more
- 20:40Speaker 1: will be eligible to participate in the Feed the Future,
- 20:43Speaker 1: Feed the Future food packaging event with Chip with Brad
- 20:46Speaker 1: and other broadcasters from FanDuel Sports Network. I know I
- 20:49Speaker 1: will be there, Alexadat will be there. That will take
- 20:52Speaker 1: place again on Friday, September nineteenth from ten to twelve.
- 20:55Speaker 1: As part of the experience, each registered donor will receive
- 20:58Speaker 1: four tickets to Friday's game on September nineteenth against the Brewers,
- 21:02Speaker 1: a Cardinals goodie bag, and a photo opportunity with the
- 21:05Speaker 1: broadcasters at the event. So that is priceless. I know
- 21:08Speaker 1: that they'll have their perfect smiles and everything, so check
- 21:12Speaker 1: it out. As Brad said, you can donate at Cardinals
- 21:14Speaker 1: dot com slash Feed the Future. I hope to see
- 21:16Speaker 1: many of you their Chip, Brad, It's also a very
- 21:20Speaker 1: exciting weekend here at Bush Stadium. It's Hall of Fame weekend,
- 21:24Speaker 1: and this is one of my favorite weekends in Saint Louis.
- 21:26Speaker 1: I think they do this right in terms of bringing
- 21:30Speaker 1: back and honoring the legacies and the traditions that make
- 21:33Speaker 1: Cardinals baseball Cardinals Baseball. So Edgar, Renteria, Walt, Jockety, and
- 21:37Speaker 1: our pal Al Roski will be inducted on Saturday, that
- 21:40Speaker 1: is tomorrow. When you think about what Al has meant
- 21:44Speaker 1: to you guys as just being part of the Cardinal
- 21:47Speaker 1: family and the FanDuel family, Brad will start with you,
- 21:50Speaker 1: what does that mean? What is your relationship with Al like,
- 21:52Speaker 1: and what does he mean to you? Yeah?
- 21:54Speaker 2: Look, Al has been such an incredible mentor and a
- 21:58Speaker 2: friend to me in I came in as a guy
- 22:01Speaker 2: that knew nothing of this industry and Al had been
- 22:04Speaker 2: doing this for a long time and they allowed me
- 22:07Speaker 2: to come in and do a handful of games and Chip.
- 22:10Speaker 2: You know how competitive this industry is, you know how
- 22:13Speaker 2: people want these jobs, right, and new guy comes in,
- 22:16Speaker 2: it would be so easy for Al to just.
- 22:19Speaker 3: Like beat it.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Al was nothing but gracious and helpful in everything that
- 22:24Speaker 2: I've been doing from this platform. Same thing with doing
- 22:28Speaker 2: work with the Cardinals, going to schools and doing the
- 22:31Speaker 2: Cardinals Kids school program. Al has been doing that forever.
- 22:35Speaker 2: He was one of the first ones I went to
- 22:36Speaker 2: go see to emulate what Al was doing and bringing
- 22:40Speaker 2: to the community. So that's just from the broadcast standpoint.
- 22:43Speaker 2: You can go back and look at the back of
- 22:45Speaker 2: his baseball card. Al had a much deserving Cardinal Hall
- 22:48Speaker 2: of Fame career on the field, but his impact in
- 22:51Speaker 2: the booth, in the community. If you're at the ballpark,
- 22:54Speaker 2: chances are you got an Al Roboski card because he
- 22:57Speaker 2: is walking around. He's in every booth and and he
- 23:00Speaker 2: just brings a smile to people's faces. Chip for somebody
- 23:03Speaker 2: named the Mad Hungarian. He's kind of huggable. I love
- 23:06Speaker 2: the guy and I'm so excited for Yeah, to.
- 23:08Speaker 4: Take a phrase from your vocabulary, he's adorable. I mean,
- 23:11Speaker 4: that's how we would that's how we would talk about Al.
- 23:13Speaker 4: I mean, for me, Al was the first baseball analyst
- 23:16Speaker 4: I ever got to work with.
- 23:17Speaker 6: Years and years ago. I got to fill in for
- 23:19Speaker 6: Ken Wilson doing some Cardinals.
- 23:20Speaker 4: Games while he was off doing hockey and I was
- 23:23Speaker 4: the first guy that took me under his wing, as
- 23:25Speaker 4: it were, back in the late nineteen eighties, just coming
- 23:28Speaker 4: into doing a couple of Cardinals games.
- 23:30Speaker 6: He's just such a great guy.
- 23:31Speaker 4: His baseball career is one thing, but he had such
- 23:34Speaker 4: a presence, such a personality, and in a sport where
- 23:37Speaker 4: guys and teams have become somewhat vanilla, I think people
- 23:41Speaker 4: clamor for that kind of uniqueness that Al brought, that fire,
- 23:45Speaker 4: that passion, that craziness because you never knew what was
- 23:48Speaker 4: going to happen the baseball side. It was one thing
- 23:51Speaker 4: just to see Ali come in the booth every single
- 23:53Speaker 4: day and give us grief about, oh, you guys didn't
- 23:55Speaker 4: do such a good.
- 23:55Speaker 6: Job last night. We lost five to four, like it's
- 23:58Speaker 6: our fault now, thanks, but he really cares.
- 24:01Speaker 4: And getting to know Al and his wife June, who
- 24:03Speaker 4: just celebrated a birthday the other day. To hear Al's
- 24:06Speaker 4: amazing National Guard stories from southern California and all the
- 24:09Speaker 4: things that he experienced with that is an amazing part
- 24:12Speaker 4: of his psyche and his personality.
- 24:14Speaker 6: So if you get a chance to see him, ask
- 24:16Speaker 6: him about that.
- 24:17Speaker 4: He's a roic guy in so many different ways, and
- 24:19Speaker 4: I think he'll come away with a big smile on your.
- 24:21Speaker 6: Face when you get to encounter Alaboski, right, Brad.
- 24:25Speaker 3: Oh, no doubt about it.
- 24:26Speaker 2: He's got some great stories and loves telling him, so,
- 24:29Speaker 2: you know, make sure you ask the right questions.
- 24:31Speaker 1: I am very, very excited to see how that Hall
- 24:34Speaker 1: of Fame speech will go. So big congrats to al To,
- 24:36Speaker 1: Edgar Ventura and the Jockety family. We'll be right back
- 24:39Speaker 1: after a quick message from True Classic, and we'll wrap
- 24:41Speaker 1: this one up with some rapid fire questions with your
- 24:43Speaker 1: favorite broadcasters.
- 24:45Speaker 5: Ft FAM Designer clothes can be expensive, but we want
- 24:48Speaker 5: our clothes to look good, we want to feel good.
- 24:50Speaker 5: We want them to be affordable. And krats if you
- 24:53Speaker 5: tell me that I can wear a T shirt that
- 24:55Speaker 5: looks like it's tailored but it's not actually tailored and
- 24:58Speaker 5: it just comes that way, then sign me up for
- 25:00Speaker 5: True Classic.
- 25:02Speaker 7: Has to You gotta sign up for it because these
- 25:04Speaker 7: shirts are soft, they're thin, they're durable, and they're very versatile.
- 25:10Speaker 7: You can wear them to the gym, you can wear
- 25:11Speaker 7: them out to a nice dinner. Let's get after it,
- 25:14Speaker 7: because these shirts are the real deal.
- 25:17Speaker 3: They are. Check it out.
- 25:18Speaker 5: I've got one of the performance ones. It's a nice
- 25:21Speaker 5: blue fits well. I can go to the gym, I
- 25:24Speaker 5: can go out, I can do FT in a shirt
- 25:27Speaker 5: like this.
- 25:28Speaker 1: Ft FAM.
- 25:28Speaker 5: There's a reason why True Classic has sold over twenty
- 25:31Speaker 5: five million shirts to more than five million customers, and
- 25:34Speaker 5: they are racking up over two hundred thousand and five
- 25:36Speaker 5: star reviews. See for yourself with our exclusive link at
- 25:40Speaker 5: true classic dot com slash foul to say that's True
- 25:42Speaker 5: Classic dot com slash foul.
- 25:46Speaker 1: All right, guys, Giants are in town for three games.
- 25:49Speaker 1: We have Michael McGreevey on the Mountain night against righthander
- 25:52Speaker 1: Carson Seymour, who I totally know who that is. It's
- 25:57Speaker 1: a nineteen eighty five fortieth anniversary reunion of the NL
- 26:01Speaker 1: Championship teams, so over twenty former players and coaches from
- 26:04Speaker 1: that team will be honored on the pregame ceremony to
- 26:06Speaker 1: kick off Hall of Fame weekend. We have time for
- 26:09Speaker 1: one rapid fire question. So I'm not quite sure that
- 26:12Speaker 1: it's like rapid fire more than just like one. Let
- 26:14Speaker 1: me put you on the spot, all right, if you
- 26:16Speaker 1: were going to ask the manager Ali marmal one question today,
- 26:20Speaker 1: and it would guarantee to make him mad. What would
- 26:23Speaker 1: you ask him?
- 26:24Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, Oh there's so many that I can't
- 26:27Speaker 2: even out here. Guarantee to make him mad. Chip, you're
- 26:33Speaker 2: good at this.
- 26:34Speaker 6: Oh thanks. I always used to like to ask him, Hey,
- 26:37Speaker 6: why didn't you use Elsley in the eighth inning?
- 26:40Speaker 3: That's always a good one.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Yeah, now, especially that's a good fan one.
- 26:45Speaker 6: That's a good lead every time.
- 26:48Speaker 3: Boy.
- 26:49Speaker 2: Luckily, there there was nothing strategically in the last couple
- 26:53Speaker 2: of games against the A's that you could go back to.
- 26:56Speaker 2: But I will give Allie credit some if you question
- 26:59Speaker 2: one of the things, and I know Katie is part
- 27:01Speaker 2: of your job every day, is Hey, if it's something
- 27:03Speaker 2: you know seventh in Inny he makes a move, that
- 27:05Speaker 2: move doesn't work out, you have to question it.
- 27:07Speaker 3: He usually does that pretty well. But I'd like to
- 27:09Speaker 3: ask about those.
- 27:11Speaker 2: Man, he does a good job of not getting frustrated.
- 27:15Speaker 2: I don't have one that I think that is going
- 27:17Speaker 2: to make him mad. I mean, I could reference an
- 27:19Speaker 2: old player or something like that if I wanted to.
- 27:21Speaker 2: I think that might get it going.
- 27:22Speaker 3: But other than that, he likes you a lot.
- 27:24Speaker 4: When you talk about him being glove first as a
- 27:27Speaker 4: minor league player.
- 27:27Speaker 6: That's always a good one.
- 27:29Speaker 2: Well, we did have one of those, Katie the other day.
- 27:30Speaker 2: There was a foul ball into the dugout. He snatches
- 27:34Speaker 2: a good grab by Ali, and I said the glove
- 27:37Speaker 2: was never an issue.
- 27:40Speaker 1: As actual as a broadcaster, you have to enlighten your
- 27:44Speaker 1: audience with facts. But you are right, Brad. I like
- 27:48Speaker 1: to start with any kind of question with all of you,
- 27:51Speaker 1: just like, hey, did you think about this? Totally tongue
- 27:54Speaker 1: in cheek, because obviously he did, And to kick off
- 27:56Speaker 1: the media session with a heavy size. He tries to
- 27:59Speaker 1: gather his patients as I'm obviously messing around. I'm not
- 28:02Speaker 1: sure the fellow writers appreciate that because I've already started
- 28:05Speaker 1: it off on a wrong foot. But he is so
- 28:08Speaker 1: good at the strategic questions and really just like taking
- 28:11Speaker 1: no offense to hey, did you like what was the
- 28:14Speaker 1: lodgic behind this decision? Or why didn't you do this?
- 28:17Speaker 1: When did you think about doing this? And I've learned
- 28:19Speaker 1: a lot from him in terms of how he breaks
- 28:22Speaker 1: things down in the decisions, and I know he does
- 28:24Speaker 1: the same for you guys. You guys are in there
- 28:25Speaker 1: for like thirty minutes a day just laughing it up.
- 28:28Speaker 1: I know, I hear it, but he does a really
- 28:30Speaker 1: nice job of making sure that you know there is
- 28:33Speaker 1: Whether or not it pans out is never really the
- 28:35Speaker 1: issue or the question that we have. It's the decision,
- 28:38Speaker 1: like how he got there in the first place. And
- 28:40Speaker 1: I think he goes above and beyond as far as
- 28:41Speaker 1: managers go, and ensuring that both his writers and his
- 28:45Speaker 1: broadcasters understand that they're the thought process behind it results
- 28:48Speaker 1: secondary and it's just kind of interesting to see that
- 28:51Speaker 1: that aspect of the gameplayout through managers.
- 28:53Speaker 4: Yeah, he's a very curious man. He's very smart, and
- 28:56Speaker 4: obviously his decisions are well founded.
- 28:59Speaker 6: I can't think the moment.
- 29:00Speaker 4: In my brief time here, I've said, ah, I really
- 29:03Speaker 4: don't get why he did that, because he's explained it
- 29:05Speaker 4: to us, and then when you think about it, it
- 29:06Speaker 4: makes total sense. But Brad, what's really refreshing, I'm sure
- 29:09Speaker 4: for you and for me too. Katie you've probably experienced
- 29:11Speaker 4: this as well is you can sit in that room
- 29:13Speaker 4: and he'll say, what did you think about situation AB
- 29:17Speaker 4: or c? What would you have done? And there really
- 29:19Speaker 4: is an intellectual curiosity as to how other people thought.
- 29:23Speaker 6: Or see a particular series of plays.
- 29:26Speaker 4: And he's really genuinely interested in what other people think
- 29:29Speaker 4: about the way things transpired, and maybe he learns from
- 29:32Speaker 4: us and thinks about things in a different way. So
- 29:35Speaker 4: there's that really healthy give and take, which I think
- 29:37Speaker 4: is really really fun.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Yeah, he invites the pushback, which is pretty fun and refreshing,
- 29:41Speaker 2: because you know, a lot of people like to live
- 29:43Speaker 2: in that echo chamber of everything that you do is right,
- 29:46Speaker 2: and I feel like that's how you grow, is getting
- 29:48Speaker 2: the other side of things.
- 29:50Speaker 1: Agreed. Agreed, guys. All right, Well we'll get you out
- 29:52Speaker 1: of here because all three of us have to be
- 29:53Speaker 1: at the ballpark in about forty five minutes. So yeah,
