- 0:25Now let's open our Bibles and study God's Word.
- 0:31Amen. All right, so if you have a
- 0:33Bible, we will be in Matthew 28, Matthew 28.
- 0:37But as you're going there, let's go ahead and jump in and kind of
- 0:41give a road map to where we will be.
- 0:44So tonight's message really comes to us from what the Lord
- 0:48has been doing in my life. Again, I, I have the privilege
- 0:53of overseeing the youth. So things that I've seen in the
- 0:55youth, but also during some counselling here at the church.
- 1:00And so I have a few questions before we jump in.
- 1:03And I want to ask you this, Do you ever wrestle with questions
- 1:09about the Bible? Do you ever wrestle with for
- 1:13God's will in your life? Do you ever wrestle with the
- 1:17circumstances or how your circumstances can get the best
- 1:21of you? Do you deal with uncertainties
- 1:25and struggles? I often and even in the past
- 1:29have struggled with some of this and perhaps maybe you too.
- 1:35But as we talked about tonight, we're going to give a little bit
- 1:37of context where we're going to be in Matthew 28 and here we're
- 1:41talking about the ascension of Jesus, the ascension of Jesus
- 1:46right right before he goes into heaven.
- 1:50But Jesus reminds us right before this ascension that he
- 1:53was doing life right. He, he came, he died, rose again
- 1:57on the third day. But in this picture right here
- 2:00before we get to Matthew 28, we see that Jesus is doing life
- 2:04with the disciples. He's walking with them, He
- 2:07stayed with them, He's talking with them, they ate, and he's
- 2:10reminding them that he was truly alive.
- 2:15Many scholars believe that throughout this time before the
- 2:19ascension, that Jesus, excuse me, that Jesus approached people
- 2:27in groups of people 13 different times, 13 different times, and
- 2:31to name a few, those times are the women at the tomb.
- 2:36He appeared to the disciples. He also appeared to the men on
- 2:40their walk to Emmaus. He appeared to 500 and these
- 2:44people come that we come to know as the the eyewitnesses.
- 2:48He shared meals. He even went fishing with the
- 2:51disciples. And then finally Jesus brings
- 2:55them to the mountain. And this is where we read in
- 2:58Matthew 28 and in Matthew 28, we see that, you know, these are
- 3:03the last recorded words before, you know, Jesus is preparing to
- 3:07to leave on a cloud. And I can't imagine that like
- 3:10this is just so remarkable, remarkable.
- 3:13And it's one of the questions I'm going to ask Jesus, you
- 3:15know, when I get to heaven is just how did you do it, right?
- 3:18Was it something like right, something where, you know, I
- 3:22just man, I can't even you know, but by faith, I'm like, man,
- 3:25what an extraordinary thing to see.
- 3:29And so even before he is sins, right, he gives the Great
- 3:33Commission and he's telling the disciples, hey, I'm giving you a
- 3:37command. These last words, they matter a
- 3:40lot. And these last words before we
- 3:42actually read it is to go tell the world what just happened,
- 3:46right? To go tell the world to go tell
- 3:48the Jews, to go tell the Gentiles of what just happened
- 3:52and what happened. The gospel happened, the good
- 3:55news happened that Jesus lived without sin.
- 3:58He died on a cross. God raised him from the dead so
- 4:02that anyone who believes in him can be forgiven and transformed.
- 4:07So let's go ahead and read Matthew 28, starting in verse 16
- 4:11through 17. It says then the 11 disciples
- 4:16went away into Galilee to the mountain which Jesus had
- 4:21appointed for them. Verse 17.
- 4:25And here's where we're going to be with our study tonight.
- 4:28If we read it too fast, you might miss it.
- 4:31Verse 17. But when they saw him, they
- 4:34worshipped him. But some doubted.
- 4:39In that same moment, again, remarkable time, we see the
- 4:44risen Christ, we see Jesus, we see the miracle worker, some
- 4:48worshipped, but some doubted. And so tonight's message is
- 4:54titled dealing with doubt, Dealing with doubt.
- 4:59So while this is going on, right, we see those that are
- 5:02worshipping, we see those that doubt it.
- 5:05And a commentator by the name of David Guzik says this.
- 5:09When they recognized him, it was natural they worshipped him.
- 5:14But the whole experience was so mysterious and overwhelming that
- 5:18some doubted. And if you've ever studied the
- 5:20Greek, the Greek word is this thought so.
- 5:24And this is what it means. It does not denote A settled
- 5:28unbelief, but a state of uncertainty and hesitation.
- 5:34I'll say that again, a state of uncertainty and hesitation.
- 5:38If you're taking notes tonight, we will have 3 points and I'll
- 5:42have some takeaways at the end, but point number one is doubt is
- 5:47part of the growth process. Doubt is part of the growth
- 5:53process. I want to raise something
- 5:58interesting to you guys, something funny in our human
- 6:02nature, and here it is. Why is it that when something
- 6:07bad happens in someone's life or a struggle happens, it's often
- 6:13encouraging to us? Have you ever noticed that,
- 6:18right? We see something like the
- 6:20disciples, right? They saw the resurrected Christ,
- 6:23but they still doubt. And I'm like, this is crazy.
- 6:29But it makes me feel the type of way because that weird nature
- 6:32also happens in our life. You know, we see people, you
- 6:36know, on social media or we see people, you know, the day-to-day
- 6:40or even while we're shaking hands tonight, right?
- 6:42We see people. Hey, how's it going?
- 6:44Oh, man, I'm doing great, right? While inside, you're not trying
- 6:46to cry, right? We also see people on social
- 6:49media, right? You know, with the perfect
- 6:52smile, the perfect filter, you know something, you know that
- 6:56you're just showing the highlights of your life.
- 6:59And if you know, and you see that, but behind the scenes,
- 7:04people are hurting, right? There's spiritual warfare
- 7:07happening and there's, there's also just, you know, the things
- 7:11that we don't see. But if I can be real with you
- 7:14guys lately with the high school youth, we've been talking about
- 7:18spiritual warfare. If you've dealt with some
- 7:21spiritual warfare, let me see your hand.
- 7:23OK, Well, well, there we go. Yes, most of you, right?
- 7:26Almost all of you. And if I can be real with you
- 7:29guys, my last few months have been pretty crazy.
- 7:34I've been pretty hectic. You know, like I mentioned,
- 7:37Family Fest, we have inflatables.
- 7:39We have, you know, candy we're giving out, we're sharing the
- 7:42gospel, we're doing all this cool stuff.
- 7:44And that's the day. And So what I'm talking about is
- 7:47the day before Family Fest, the day before family fest, my
- 7:51family's here. We're kind of putting some
- 7:53balloons together. We're hanging out, we're
- 7:55praying, we're laughing, we're doing some things.
- 7:57Then I get a phone call. Hey, your car got hit outside
- 8:01the parking lot. And I'm like, what?
- 8:04What just happened? So I go out there, got
- 8:06sideswiped. The Lord took care of it.
- 8:08We're fine. Couple months after that.
- 8:11OK, for some of you, you might know, this hurt.
- 8:14My furnace goes out, my furnace goes out and I'm just kind of
- 8:18stressing. My wife is like, hey, we got to
- 8:20figure this out what's going on. And it was right before the
- 8:24weird stuff of hey, the polar vortex.
- 8:26I still don't understand it. The polar vortex is coming.
- 8:29We're going to have negative weather.
- 8:30You know, I have a little 3 year old boy one on the way and just
- 8:33hey, I can't have my house, you know, being, you know, super
- 8:36cold, right? So my furnace breaks and then,
- 8:39you know, a couple weeks ago, I get sick.
- 8:42I get sick. I don't know if Pastor Ed got me
- 8:44sick or Pastor Ian, maybe Pastor Sean, you know, but you guys
- 8:48know what I'm talking about. When you get sick, man, it
- 8:51knocks you on your butt, right? And so especially as you get
- 8:54older, right? I'm, I'm, I'm starting to
- 8:58realize, OK, it takes a little bit more to go through that.
- 9:03And and so I'm sharing with someone, hey, you know, some of
- 9:06this warfare, right? And someone says to me, I didn't
- 9:11know that pastors had problems. And I kind of look at them and
- 9:17I'm like, man, the same Holy Spirit in me is the same Holy
- 9:20Spirit in you, you know, and and you know, maybe not Pastor Sean
- 9:24or Pastor Ian, but me, man, let me write this down, right?
- 9:31And I tell them, you know, well, you're welcome.
- 9:34I'm glad my pain blesses you. Apparently, you know, but we
- 9:39come back to this place, right? The disciples, right?
- 9:42Some of them doubted, some of them doubted.
- 9:46And sometimes doubt feels scary. Doubt feels scary because
- 9:51sometimes I can feel in life that I'm very close to God.
- 9:54I'm here, I'm worshiping, I'm listening to you guys, I'm
- 9:57walking, I'm watching, you know, even in my life, right?
- 9:59Things are going good, right? And then something may happen,
- 10:04and doubt can feel scary or an uncertainty or a struggle,
- 10:09right? Telling me about, you know, the
- 10:12Lord, right? I know God is good, right?
- 10:15I know God is real. I know that his word is alive
- 10:19and powerful, right? Someone tells me God's not real.
- 10:23That's like me saying, hey, your mom's not real, right?
- 10:25And so it comes to this place where we're just saying, hey,
- 10:29like, I'm in this place with the Lord, right?
- 10:31Circumstances don't matter, but there are some of you here
- 10:35tonight, and I've often even wrestled with this myself.
- 10:38Maybe there's something I don't understand.
- 10:40Maybe I have a question, you know, that maybe someone can't
- 10:44help me answer. You know, you come into the
- 10:46church, you come into a place, and you feel, am I the only one?
- 10:50If I ask this, what are people going to think of me?
- 10:54Does this mean I don't really believe?
- 10:56You might feel guilt, you might feel shame.
- 10:59You might feel like, is my faith fragile?
- 11:03So why do we doubt? We doubt because there is often
- 11:06there's these questions that we can't answer.
- 11:09I don't understand what this means.
- 11:11That's fair. There's situations that seem
- 11:15unfair that we see in the world. Things like maybe I prayed for
- 11:18healing and someone still died. Maybe I prayed for someone and
- 11:23nothing changed. Maybe you're hurting and you're
- 11:26wondering, God, where are you in my pain?
- 11:30Maybe you're saying, you know, how could God allow this to
- 11:33happen? Maybe you're saying, hey, the
- 11:35things I see in this world, right?
- 11:37God, do you see it? Another thing is there's hurts
- 11:42that we can't resolve on our own.
- 11:45Someone you looked up to falls into sin, someone that you were
- 11:49close to maybe hurt you, someone that broke trust, right?
- 11:54And it's hard to give it again. But again, do you ever battle
- 11:59with doubts or uncertainties? And some of the parents that are
- 12:03listening to me tonight, you might be thinking, well, not in
- 12:06my home. And as I've been the youth
- 12:09pastor, I've been, you know, been able to walk through some
- 12:11things with your students and sometimes, you know, But what
- 12:14happens when your child comes home and asks a question and the
- 12:18child asks a question that's hard and maybe you don't know
- 12:21the answer. The answer right there is don't
- 12:24panic, right? I've never met someone that's
- 12:26like, man, I'm so glad I panicked.
- 12:29Like that was so good, right? You made something up, right?
- 12:32You don't do that, right? You begin to process it.
- 12:36Your kids grow up to watch, right?
- 12:38Not just their friends faith, but whose faith, right?
- 12:40Who's at home with them? Your faith, Your kids watch your
- 12:44faith, right? The Bible says train up your
- 12:47child in the way they should go, right?
- 12:50That when they're old enough, they don't depart from it.
- 12:53They don't depart from it. And so where I'm getting AT, and
- 13:00the point is tonight with that, is that our church in our homes
- 13:04should be a safe place to ask these hard questions.
- 13:08You know, there was a time where, you know, you guys may
- 13:11not know this unless you're serving, but we do this thing
- 13:14called a rally, a rally where we meet in different areas, a part
- 13:17of the church, talk about, you know, hey, if someone's new or,
- 13:20you know, ministry, here's what's going on.
- 13:22You know, high school camp, junior high camp, men's
- 13:25ministry, women's ministry. So we meet as, you know,
- 13:29volunteers and we pray and, and we have all these things.
- 13:32But there was a moment where me and Pastor Ed, we were meeting
- 13:35in one of the high school rooms and someone left some notes that
- 13:40they had taken and they had, excuse me, some questions for
- 13:44the Lord. And a few of those were, if God
- 13:47is good, why are there bad things happening in the world?
- 13:52Why is there only one way to Jesus?
- 13:56How can I know the Bible is true world stuff?
- 13:59Innocent people being hurt, caught on the caught in the
- 14:03crossfire. And so here are the things that
- 14:06I want to encourage you guys, right?
- 14:07These are the things that our youth are going through.
- 14:10Your kids may be going through. Maybe you're experiencing some
- 14:13of that even tonight, but The thing is is that doubt does not
- 14:18mean that you don't believe in the Lord.
- 14:21Doubt means your faith is being stretched right.
- 14:25Many of those things of her or how can this happen things like
- 14:28that right The the Lord even tells us right.
- 14:30You will go through trials and tribulation, but take courage.
- 14:34I have overcome the world. You know when we see those maps
- 14:37in the sanctuary when we see the maps in the foyer and even the
- 14:40atrium. We see that our Lord has a
- 14:45missionary heart, right? Our Lord is with us and he's
- 14:49reminding us that hey, even these even though these bad
- 14:52things do happen, right. I have raised up people to come
- 14:56and to help and and even in the Lord in the midst right.
- 14:58He doesn't need us, but he moves in the way and often these bad
- 15:02things that do happen in the world is a result of someone
- 15:05else's sin. And so here are these things
- 15:09right. If if you go home with anything
- 15:12tonight is I want you to understand this doubt is not the
- 15:17enemy of faith. Your doubts handled properly can
- 15:22be a catalyst to a stronger faith.
- 15:26Your doubts don't have to take you away from God in the
- 15:31wrestling. Bring your bring this closer,
- 15:34right? Bring it to the Lord.
- 15:35Your faith is actually a journey and it's not a destination.
- 15:42Your faith is actually a journey and not a destination.
- 15:46Again, sin is destructful. Sometimes there's hurts you
- 15:51can't resolve, but we know who can, and that is Jesus Christ.
- 15:59As we're going through our faith walk, as we're going through the
- 16:02things that we've gone through, right?
- 16:03If you know there's some things right that that we've gone
- 16:07through, right? Elbow the person next to you and
- 16:09say, I've gone through some things.
- 16:14But during that time, right during that time, you get to a
- 16:20place, you know, maybe for some of you guys that have been
- 16:22walking with the Lord for a while, where you're like, man,
- 16:26Pastor Ed, guess what? Guess what, Pastor Ed, I've
- 16:29already done discipleship one O one.
- 16:31I've done evangelism one O one. I've read the first packet, you
- 16:35know, 3 or 4 times and Pastor Ed, I have come to this place
- 16:39where I feel that I have arrived, right?
- 16:42That sounds crazy. It sounds crazy, but sometimes
- 16:47we walk like that. Sometimes we think, you know, I
- 16:49don't have to read the scripture again.
- 16:51I've already read it. I don't have to.
- 16:52Do you know this XY and Z again, it's not, you know, these steps
- 16:57or works, but it's more of what is God doing in us?
- 17:00Anytime we ever open up the Word, God is ready to speak.
- 17:08And so that's why when we get to this place, when we're dealing
- 17:11with hard questions, when we're dealing with, you know, things
- 17:14for our children, when we're dealing with things in our own
- 17:17lives, we don't panic, but we start to process through it.
- 17:22And that process grows us. So point #2 tonight is God has
- 17:28always worked with doubters. God has always worked with
- 17:32doubters. You know the story of Abraham
- 17:36and Sarah, right? God comes to them and says, hey,
- 17:39I'm going to bless you and give you a son.
- 17:42I'm going to bless her richly, right?
- 17:44Speaking to Sarah before he changes her name, right, gets to
- 17:48Abraham as we know Abraham. And what does Abraham say in
- 17:53disbelief? He even laughs and he says he
- 17:57says this in verse 17. Then Abraham bowed down on the
- 18:00ground, but he laughed to himself in disbelief, and he
- 18:04laughed right, and often read that right.
- 18:06But he was 100 years old. And I think, you know, Sarah was
- 18:09close to 90. And here's the Lord telling
- 18:12them, hey, you're going to have a kid.
- 18:15But we have to understand, right, as we were reminded, you
- 18:17know, even in our staff meeting this morning, is that God's ways
- 18:21are higher than our ways. Amen.
- 18:25We ought to understand that. You know, again, the Lord deals
- 18:27with doubters and he walks with doubters and he encourages
- 18:30doubters and he challenges doubters.
- 18:33I think of the Israelites, the children of Israel, they had
- 18:37seen God's miracles. They had seen this, the Red Sea
- 18:40being parted, right? They look forward and, and, and
- 18:43what's in front of them, they look to the hills and the
- 18:45mountains on the left and right, and who's coming after them,
- 18:48right, The Egyptian army, right? And then the sea is parted.
- 18:52They see this miracle. They also see manna falling down
- 18:56from the sky. They see that pillar, you know,
- 18:58blocking them for shade, right? We often relate to maybe even
- 19:03Gideon. Lord, show me a sign.
- 19:05Tell me that you're there, Lord. The Lord gives a sign.
- 19:08The Lord sends people. The Lord gives us his word.
- 19:12And you know, the Lord asks Gideon.
- 19:14He says, how can or Gideon ask the Lord, how can I rescue
- 19:18Israel? God, give me the sign with the
- 19:20fleece asking questions. Even in the New Testament we see
- 19:25that John the Baptist asked, you know, even when right after or
- 19:30right when he was in prison. It says in Matthew Chapter 11,
- 19:34verse 2, it says John the Baptist was in prison, heard
- 19:37about all these things the Messiah was doing, and so he
- 19:39sent his disciples to ask Jesus, are you the Messiah we've been
- 19:44expecting or should we keep looking for someone else?
- 19:49Jesus told him. Go back to John and tell him
- 19:53what you have heard or sorry to John and tell him what you have
- 19:57heard and seen. We also see the little demon
- 20:00possessed child and just you know this, this setting of of
- 20:05you know who can help, who can help and here comes Jesus right
- 20:09in and in Mark Chapter 9 verse 24, it says immediately the
- 20:13father of the child cried out and said with tears, Lord, I
- 20:17believe but help my unbelief. You know, we see that also the
- 20:24then the story of Thomas. I won't believe until I see it.
- 20:27And in Matthew 28 verse 17, right, it says when they saw
- 20:32him, they worshipped him, but some doubted.
- 20:38We see in Scripture that Jesus, you know, he walked on water, he
- 20:43cast the demons out, he feeds the 5000, he raises the dead.
- 20:49And what does Jesus do to the doubters?
- 20:53Jesus meets them where they're at.
- 20:55Jesus does not rebuke them. He does not shame them.
- 21:00He doesn't walk away and say try again.
- 21:03But instead in Matthew 28 verse 17, it says, and Jesus came and
- 21:07spoke to them saying all authority, excuse me, has been
- 21:11given to me in heaven and on earth.
- 21:14Go therefore make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in
- 21:19the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
- 21:24Did Jesus say, all right, doubters, doubters.
- 21:26I need you guys. All right, Everyone that
- 21:28worshipped on this side and all the doubters on this side.
- 21:31OK, so let's go ahead and do that in the church right now.
- 21:34No, I'm just waiting. No, no, but no, Jesus met
- 21:38doubters where they were at, right?
- 21:40Maybe someone struggling with something, someone that you
- 21:42know, just just had this uncertainty.
- 21:46But even doubters were sent, right?
- 21:48It doesn't say that Jesus separated them.
- 21:50He said go and make disciples of all nations.
- 21:54Even doubters were found in the hall of faith founded in
- 21:58Hebrews. Most of these that I've already
- 22:00named. And the great thing too is that
- 22:06Jesus does not reject people for questioning.
- 22:10He's a big God. He can take it.
- 22:13He wants to walk through with it with you.
- 22:17Point #3 Tonight is Jesus meets us in our doubt.
- 22:22Jesus meets us in our doubt. The point is here that the
- 22:25strongest faith isn't a faith that never doubts.
- 22:30The strongest faith is a faith that grows through your doubts.
- 22:35I'll say that one more time. The strongest faith is a faith
- 22:38that grows through your doubts. So who we're going to talk about
- 22:43tonight as well is Thomas. Thomas, help me out.
- 22:47What is he known for? Doubting Thomas.
- 22:51So I'm going to read a few scriptures in the NLT, but
- 22:55again, after the resurrection, right, Thomas gets his bad
- 22:59reputation, but sometimes some of you can relate to him, right?
- 23:02You have some questions in the NLT in in book of John chapter
- 23:0720 verse 24 and 25 it says one of the 12 disciples, Thomas
- 23:12nicknamed the twin we have seen the Lord or sorry verse 25 they
- 23:21told him we have seen the Lord. But he replied I won't believe
- 23:26it unless I see the nail wounds in his hands, put my fingers
- 23:30into them and place my hand into the wound on his side.
- 23:38The disciples say we seen Jesus in the Greek.
- 23:41This means that it's active, tense.
- 23:44It's basically like they're saying, we seen Jesus, we seen
- 23:46Jesus. They're so excited.
- 23:47We seen Jesus, we seen Jesus. It's kind of like my son when,
- 23:51when, when he's asking for applesauce, Daddy, daddy, daddy,
- 23:55daddy, right? He just really excited about it.
- 23:58But Thomas represents, you know, some things that are found in us
- 24:03that we have some questions. You know, in life we've gone
- 24:06through some things, right? For some of you tonight, you've
- 24:09gone through some disappointments, gone through
- 24:11some heart breaks, gone through some very real stuff.
- 24:15And sometimes you have questions.
- 24:18But just because you have questions, it doesn't mean that
- 24:22it makes you bad. Just because you have questions,
- 24:24it doesn't mean that it makes you bad.
- 24:27Questions make you human. Oswald Chambers said this Dell
- 24:32is not always a sign that a man is wrong.
- 24:36It may be a sign that he is thinking.
- 24:39Your doubts don't disqualify your faith.
- 24:42For some of you, you probably relate to the other disciples,
- 24:44right? Maybe like Matthew, Peter,
- 24:47right. A lot of I know for me, I relate
- 24:49a lot to Peter, right impulsive James and John, you know, for
- 24:54but for some of you, Thomas, but here's some reasons I want to
- 24:58just you know, bring us back to this place where Thomas does
- 25:01have faith. You know, there's there's some
- 25:04scripture found in the book of John Chapter 11, just, you know,
- 25:09right before all that's happening found in Chapter 11
- 25:12verse 14 through 16. It says this.
- 25:17Then Jesus said to them plainly, Lazarus is dead and I'm glad for
- 25:21your sakes that I was not there that you may believe.
- 25:25Nevertheless, nevertheless, let us go to him.
- 25:30Then Thomas, who is called the twin, said to his fellow
- 25:33disciples, let us also go that we may die with him, Speaking of
- 25:39him, Jesus. But even before that, right,
- 25:43they get news that Lazarus has died and and he's died and he's,
- 25:47he's been dead for four days. And, and often when I'm
- 25:51studying, I read it in different translations and I don't really
- 25:55read a lot of the King James because, you know, I didn't grow
- 25:58up really speaking English until I made it to grade school.
- 26:02But it says that he stinketh. He stinketh that, that Lazarus
- 26:06had stinketh. And sometimes the, the, the
- 26:08youth would say, man, he is stinky, right?
- 26:11But it gets us to this place where basically it's setting up
- 26:14this map where, hey, we have to go back to Judea, right?
- 26:18Mary and Martha, they're there and we have to do this thing.
- 26:20But Jesus says, hold on, just wait.
- 26:23There's a plan. There's a plan.
- 26:26But what does Thomas show here? Thomas shows man, let us also go
- 26:30that we may die with him. That's not fear, that's courage.
- 26:36That's faith that I see, you know, in Thomas, you know,
- 26:42because what's happening is, you know, hey, they might kill us,
- 26:46you know, but but it just shows again this tremendous faith.
- 26:49There's another time in Scripture in John chapter 14,
- 26:53one through 6 that says this. Let not your heart be troubled.
- 26:58You believe in God, believe also in me.
- 27:00In my father's house are many mansions.
- 27:03If it were not so, I would have told you, I'm going to prepare a
- 27:07place for you. And if I go and prepare a place
- 27:10for you, I will come again and receive to you myself that where
- 27:14I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the
- 27:20way you know, or sorry, verse 4. And where I go, you know, and
- 27:25the way you know, verse 5. Thomas said to him, Lord, we do
- 27:30not know where you are going. And how can we know the way?
- 27:34Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth and the life.
- 27:38No one comes to the Father except through me.
- 27:42And that's an awesome scripture right there, because sometimes
- 27:45we're like Thomas, we're asking a question, right?
- 27:51And Thomas is like, Hey, where are we going?
- 27:53Where are you going? I want to know, man, this is
- 27:56great. I've never had a mansion.
- 27:58Anyone here haven't mentioned because I'm I'm ready for the
- 28:00Lord when you know, when he's when he says he goes to prepare
- 28:03a place, right? But I think that's that common
- 28:06question of Lord, where are you going, Lord, how do I get there?
- 28:10Right? But Jesus says I am the way, the
- 28:13truth and the life. No one comes to the no one comes
- 28:17to the Father except through me. Some of you guys need details.
- 28:22Some of you guys ask sincere questions, right?
- 28:27But when we're being honest, you have questions, right?
- 28:31Maybe your kids have questions, your friends, your family, they
- 28:34have questions. But it's again, it's a reminder.
- 28:38It's not a time to panic. It's a time to process.
- 28:43Keep pressing into the things of God.
- 28:44How did Jesus respond to Thomas? So now we come back to John 20
- 28:51verses 26 back to where doubting Thomas right was established in
- 28:57John 20 and after 8 days his disciples were again inside and
- 29:01Thomas with them. Jesus came the doors being shut
- 29:05and stood in the midst and said peace to you.
- 29:09This was 8 days later right after being asked or told, hey,
- 29:13we have seen Jesus, right? And Thomas didn't let his doubt
- 29:17just stop him from showing up. Thomas had, you know, questions,
- 29:21but he shows up and says, hey, you know, I'm here to see Jesus
- 29:25myself or I'm here to, you know, just be present.
- 29:28And that may be some of you guys here tonight, right?
- 29:31You're going through some things, right?
- 29:33You've had a bad week, you've had something tragic happen.
- 29:36Your heart is heavy, you have questions, but you're here on
- 29:40the midweek Wednesday. And so Jesus doesn't shame
- 29:44Thomas, but look what he says in verse 2729.
- 29:47Then he said to Thomas, reach your finger here and look at my
- 29:51hands and reach your hand here and put it into my side.
- 29:54Do not be unbelieving but believing.
- 29:59Verse 28 and 29 says and Thomas answered and said to him, My
- 30:03Lord and my God, Jesus said to him, Thomas, because you have
- 30:07seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not
- 30:11seen yet have believed. Jesus came and met Thomas where
- 30:17he was at. Thomas did doubt.
- 30:20Thomas did have questions. But sometimes we doubt.
- 30:24Sometimes we have questions. But what Jesus did is he gave
- 30:29Thomas exactly what he needed at that time.
- 30:33He didn't shame him. He didn't turn him away.
- 30:35He didn't say, you know, try harder, right?
- 30:38But Jesus meets you and meets me where we're at because God is
- 30:43not distant in your doubt. Psalm 77, verse one through 2,
- 30:47it says I cried out to God with my voice, to God with my voice,
- 30:51and he gave an ear to me in the day of trouble.
- 30:54I sought the Lord. My hand was stretched out in the
- 30:57night without ceasing. My soul refused to be comforted.
- 31:01And what the Lord is reminding us that through these questions,
- 31:04through these doubts, bring your hurts, bring your pain, bring
- 31:07your life to Jesus Christ. Thomas served faithfully to
- 31:12Jesus. He had struggles, he had
- 31:14questions, but he also had faith and courage.
- 31:18Church history tells us this. Thomas, after preaching,
- 31:22preaching and preaching, had a missionary trip.
- 31:27Thomas had a missionary trip to India in the year 72 AD.
- 31:32Because Thomas would not back off in his faith.
- 31:36They drove a stake through his stomach.
- 31:40Thomas would not surrender the Lordship of Jesus Christ proving
- 31:43to us that when you do have questions, you do have doubts.
- 31:46Your doubts don't disqualify your faith.
- 31:50Your faith produces courage and that's a tool for you to live
- 31:54and walk in your purpose on this side of eternity.
- 32:00Your spiritual enemy is going to try and drive you away with your
- 32:03doubt. You're not a real believer.
- 32:07This is this stuff is not real. Church doesn't care about you.
- 32:11God doesn't love you. But the devil is a liar and the
- 32:16devil is only good to kill, steal and destroy.
- 32:18But the enemy wants us to doubt God's word and God's nature.
- 32:23We've seen it even in the beginning of Genesis.
- 32:27But I have 7 takeaways for you tonight. 7 takeaways if you're
- 32:31taking notes #1 be honest with God.
- 32:36Stop pretending God is not intimidated by your questions.
- 32:40He's a big God. He's a big God.
- 32:44God, I don't understand God, this hurts God.
- 32:47I'm struggling. Faith doesn't mean silence.
- 32:50Faith means you can bring it to him #2 don't isolate, bring it
- 32:56into the light. Doubt grows in isolation.
- 32:59Doubt grows in isolation. Faith grows.
- 33:02Faith grows in community. God wants to heal it.
- 33:07So bring it out to the light. Talk to a pastor.
- 33:11Talk to a trusted believer. Talk to, you know, maybe your
- 33:14life group. Talk to a mature Christian
- 33:16friend. The enemy wants you to be alone,
- 33:19isolated. But God wants you connected #3
- 33:24separate your feelings from the truth.
- 33:26Separate your feelings from the truth.
- 33:28Feelings are real, but they are not reliable often our pastor
- 33:32says. Pastor Ed says that these
- 33:35emotions, these feelings you feel, they're there, but they
- 33:40don't often tell you the truth. You may feel abandoned, you
- 33:44might feel unsure, you might feel weak.
- 33:47But God says he is near. God says he is faithful.
- 33:52God says He is with you. Psalm 23 verse 4 says for I know
- 33:56you are. For I walk through the valley of
- 33:58the shadow of death. I will fear no evil, because
- 34:01who's with us? He's with us.
- 34:03His rod and his staff, they come for us.
- 34:05You don't build a faith on feelings you've you build a
- 34:08faith on truth. 4 Lean into scripture, not away from it.
- 34:14When you doubt your Bible is not the enemy.
- 34:18When you doubt the Bible is not the enemy.
- 34:21Read the gospels, life of Jesus, the disciples.
- 34:24Read the Psalms. Feel your emotions in the Bible.
- 34:27Read Romans. You see things even in our
- 34:29culture today. Read the book of Romans.
- 34:32Read Hebrews. It's so faith filled.
- 34:35Let God's Word anchor you, correct you, remind you, and let
- 34:40it rebuild you. Faith comes by hearing by what?
- 34:44Or faith comes by hearing by the word of God #5 Ask real
- 34:48questions, don't fear them. Questions don't destroy faith.
- 34:52Unanswered questions buried in silence do.
- 34:56God invites, seeking, knocking, wrestling, thinking.
- 35:01A faith that's never questioned is often a faith that's never
- 35:04owned. I think of Daniel or the book of
- 35:07Daniel with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, right?
- 35:12That there was a fourth one in the fire.
- 35:15Number six. Obey what you already know.
- 35:18Don't trade what you what you know for what you don't know.
- 35:22Don't trade what you know for what you don't know you need.
- 35:26You don't need new revelation. You just need faithful
- 35:30obedience. Faithful obedience.
- 35:33Paul and Silas in the book of Acts, chapter 16, right?
- 35:37They're going through the book of or the city of Philippi.
- 35:40There's a demon girl. She's profiting some of the
- 35:43leaders there, her masters. And what does Paul do?
- 35:45Paul basically tells the demon, shut up, cast the demon out.
- 35:51Girl is there, right? Everything's really cool.
- 35:53But what is the what did the magistrates do?
- 35:55They beat him with rods, him and Silas.
- 36:00But then I often read scripture and I see, you know what
- 36:02happened next and they go to jail, right?
- 36:04They're beaten with rods, they go to jail, but they're praising
- 36:07him. They're praising the Lord.
- 36:10Praise reminds your soul who God is when your mind is
- 36:14overwhelmed. Praise reminds your soul who God
- 36:17is when your mind is overwhelmed, who God is.
- 36:20And the last one is, Remember who Jesus is and what he's done
- 36:25for you. Go back to the cross, the empty
- 36:29tomb, the promises, the testimonies.
- 36:32You don't trust your doubts, you trust the Savior.
- 36:37The cross was the payment and the empty tomb was the receipt.
- 36:43And So what I leave you with tonight is just what He says
- 36:46here in Matthew 28, verses 18 through 20.
- 36:49We'll read it all the way through.
- 36:51And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, all authority has
- 36:54been given to me in heaven and on earth.
- 36:57Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them
- 37:01in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
- 37:04Verse 20, teaching them to observe all things that I've
- 37:09commanded, commanded you. And lo, and here's what I love.
- 37:15I am with you always, even to the end of the age.
- 37:19Amen. The last thing I leave you while
- 37:24I invite the worship team or pastor, here's this.
- 37:31I want you to hold on to this tonight, that the strongest
- 37:35faith is not faith that never doubts.
- 37:39The strongest faith is a faith that grows through your doubts.
- 37:45And so tonight as we're here in this room, I'm just reminded of
- 37:51you, of your life. Maybe you worship, maybe you
- 37:55doubt, maybe you're feeling between, right?
- 37:57There's days like that. But there are some of you here
- 38:00tonight, right? We see Jesus command go out
- 38:04there, go and make disciples of all nations, right?
- 38:09Jesus takes care of the details. But for some of you tonight,
- 38:13you're here in this place and you're just saying, hey, Lord,
- 38:17Lord, I'm seeking you. Lord, I've been wrestling.
- 38:20Lord, I have questions. Lord, I'm dealing with this in
- 38:22my life. And there are some people here
- 38:26tonight that you're following your own command.
- 38:30You're following things in your life that you're just thinking,
- 38:33you know, what is that? What does that mean for me?
- 38:36You're thinking about things about, you know, can God really
- 38:40save someone like me? Can God really do something in
- 38:43my life? Well, I'm here to tell you that
- 38:45I often thought that way when I first came to this church.
- 38:49I was sitting on that side and my girlfriend at the time, now
- 38:53my wife, right? But the pastor shared the
- 38:56gospel. I wrestled with it.
- 38:59I knew that I needed to change. I knew that I didn't have to
- 39:09come clean up, cleaned up. I knew that once the gospel
- 39:15right came and was presented to me, it was presented in a way
- 39:19that how could God love someone like me?
- 39:22And that might be you tonight. And I'm telling you, I know life
- 39:27separated from God and I know life with God.
- 39:32And even though it's not an easy life, right, we all go through
- 39:35some things right, as we told our neighbor.
- 39:38But I'm asking you that that hole in your heart is just like
- 39:42the same hole that I felt when I was sitting over there, that I
- 39:46filled it with drugs, I filled it chasing money, I filled it
- 39:53chasing just the things of the world.
- 39:56But just like Scripture says that this hole in my heart can
- 40:02only be filled by Jesus Christ. And so I, I want to offer that
- 40:07to you tonight. Maybe you've been dealing with
- 40:10struggles, maybe you've been dealing with anxiety,
- 40:12depression. You've been living a life
- 40:14knowing, just like the Word says, that we all fall short to
- 40:19the glory of God, that the wages of sin is death, but that Jesus
- 40:24came, He who knew no sin became sin so that for you would have
- 40:30eternity with him. The Father says in the book of
- 40:35Matthew, he says this, you didn't choose me, but I chose
- 40:42you. Jesus says that he's closer and
- 40:46he's a friend to you. And so I ask you tonight if you
- 40:51want to be in a relationship with Jesus Christ, I ask you to
- 40:54stand to your feet right now and let me pray with you.
- 41:04Maybe you're online, maybe you're on the radio.
- 41:08But again, my, my, my heart for tonight.
- 41:11Again, it's for those, right? We all know, right?
- 41:13We're not asking for a rededication, right?
- 41:17Those that have come to the faith, hey, we're here and it's
- 41:20a reminder. Let's get back to the Lord.
- 41:22But for those tonight that you're struggling, you're
- 41:24wrestling with, you know, what does God have for me?
- 41:28Again, God takes care of the details.
- 41:32He just wants your heart. So if that's you tonight and you
- 41:36boldly and proudly and, and again just, you know, stepping
- 41:39out in faith again, it's not standing up that saves you, but
- 41:42I invite you. But we just want to pray with
- 41:44you. So if there's anyone here
- 41:46tonight that's standing, I ask you to stand right now.
- 41:49And it's OK if you didn't stand. The Lord knows your heart.
- 41:57The Lord knows that he's working things in and through you.
- 42:01And so let's just go ahead and pray and pray something like
- 42:04this if that's you tonight. Dear God, I admit that I'm a
- 42:09Sinner. I acknowledge my sin before you,
- 42:12a holy and righteous God. I ask you to forgive me of my
- 42:17sin. I accept the free gift of
- 42:19salvation through your Son Jesus Christ.
- 42:23And I believe in my heart. I confess with my mouth that
- 42:26Jesus you lived, you died and you rose again to save my soul.
- 42:32I give you my life from this day forward in Jesus name and
- 42:36everyone said Amen, Amen. Thank you guys so much.
