- 0:43SPEAKER_04: It is the August 27th episode of Too Many Men on the Mic.
- 0:47SPEAKER_04: And since it's August 27th, it is going to be the last episode in the month of August.
- 0:54SPEAKER_04: And you know what that means.
- 0:55SPEAKER_04: I mean, September's right around the corner.
- 0:57SPEAKER_04: What's in September?
- 0:58SPEAKER_04: Pre-season hockey.
- 1:00SPEAKER_04: We're right on the cusp.
- 1:01SPEAKER_04: I can taste it.
- 1:02SPEAKER_04: I can smell it.
- 1:03SPEAKER_04: It's uh it's right in front of us.
- 1:05SPEAKER_04: And so uh this is not going to be a show about predictions.
- 1:08SPEAKER_04: Uh maybe we'll do that uh a couple weeks down the road.
- 1:12SPEAKER_04: Um, but uh, I mean, we're right here.
- 1:14SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's uh Labor Day is upon us uh very soon, and right on the backside of that, uh we'll be talking about hockey.
- 1:22SPEAKER_04: College football in the air, absolutely college football in the air, fantasy football drafts.
- 1:26SPEAKER_04: I've been watching preseason football.
- 1:29SPEAKER_04: Uh, I'll take it.
- 1:30SPEAKER_04: Uh, because that you know, that time between when the NHL playoffs are over and football hasn't started yet.
- 1:38SPEAKER_04: Man, those are the dog days of summer for me.
- 1:41SPEAKER_09: I think I might have mentioned this.
- 1:42SPEAKER_09: I tried to go watch a baseball game and didn't know the rules anymore.
- 1:46SPEAKER_09: Apparently, you put a person on second base in extra innings, and apparently you can like you know, challenge balls and strikes.
- 1:54SPEAKER_09: I mean, I'm a little tongue in cheek here.
- 1:56SPEAKER_09: Well, I wonder what our producer Grant thinks about all that.
- 1:59SPEAKER_09: But uh what a uh what a summer it's been.
- 2:02SPEAKER_09: Um had a little bit of a mild uh mild few weeks here in for August.
- 2:07SPEAKER_09: A little rain, a little 65 degree morning.
- 2:10SPEAKER_04: I would say frost on the pumpkins, but uh I think I think Grant's here to insert himself into offer a baseball perspective.
- 2:17SPEAKER_04: Something there, Grant.
- 2:18SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I mean how do you I can't even watch it anymore.
- 2:21SPEAKER_09: It's not the same game I grew up with, man.
- 2:25SPEAKER_04: Can Grant even hear us?
- 2:26SPEAKER_09: He's even he's frozen.
- 2:28SPEAKER_04: No, he's frozen.
- 2:29SPEAKER_09: Ah man.
- 2:30SPEAKER_09: Well uh let's get Grant off the screen here just because you know he's frozen.
- 2:36SPEAKER_09: He can come back once he's back on.
- 2:38SPEAKER_09: Um I'm excited.
- 2:40SPEAKER_09: We had uh we had team pictures last night for my 11 U Eagles team.
- 2:45SPEAKER_09: Um you know, shout out to Tom Paul and and the the crew there.
- 2:48SPEAKER_09: They do a great job of directing traffic.
- 2:50SPEAKER_09: Yeah, um, it was kind of nostalgic for me walking into the darkened rink at Afton.
- 2:56SPEAKER_09: My first year my son hasn't had his pictures taken there for his teams, and I was a little misty, and then I realized the uh um you know, I see all these little guys running around in their new uniforms and their new jerseys, and I was like big old smiles, and I this is what it's all about.
- 3:11SPEAKER_09: There you go.
- 3:11SPEAKER_09: Hey, there he is.
- 3:12SPEAKER_04: There you go.
- 3:13SPEAKER_04: He's back.
- 3:13SPEAKER_04: He was thinking about what he was gonna say.
- 3:15SPEAKER_08: Mom and dad didn't pay the bill.
- 3:17SPEAKER_08: You know, that's embarrassing because right before this, uh Jared said, Hey, as long as your Wi-Fi is good, I don't care what your background looks like.
- 3:25SPEAKER_08: And uh I thought the Wi-Fi was good.
- 3:28SPEAKER_08: See, I have a two little monitors set up here.
- 3:31SPEAKER_08: Um, so I have them both open.
- 3:33SPEAKER_08: So it was a quick transition from one laptop to the other.
- 3:37SPEAKER_08: So we're good.
- 3:38SPEAKER_04: There you go.
- 3:39SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 3:40SPEAKER_04: Well, did you have a baseball uh uh piece you you wanted to put out there as we were talking about?
- 3:45SPEAKER_08: Oh, I was gonna say they made a boring game quicker and more fun.
- 3:48SPEAKER_08: So that should be well.
- 3:50SPEAKER_04: Maybe I need to go to a baseball game.
- 3:52SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 3:53SPEAKER_08: I mean the Cardinals were fun.
- 3:55SPEAKER_08: Not not as much anymore, but they were.
- 3:57SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 3:58SPEAKER_04: Well, uh what we're gonna do is uh this week is build on last week.
- 4:03SPEAKER_04: Uh uh, you may recall that there was uh uh the two of us out in an uneven concrete surface attempting to uh yeah, stupid hockey tricks, attempting to play uh pickleball.
- 4:17SPEAKER_04: And we're gonna roll that forward.
- 4:19SPEAKER_04: Uh this week we have Ryan Leslie, and Ryan Leslie is with the Padell and Pickle Club uh here in the St.
- 4:26SPEAKER_04: Louis area.
- 4:27SPEAKER_04: And uh he's gonna tell us all the great things about how not only pickleball uh but also Padell can help you as a hockey player uh with your office development.
- 4:40SPEAKER_04: Uh so Grant, let's bring uh let's bring Ryan in and get smarter on pickleball and Padell.
- 4:46SPEAKER_04: Oh, I love the backdrop, Ryan.
- 4:48SPEAKER_04: That's great.
- 4:49SPEAKER_04: I I I like how you put that in.
- 4:51SPEAKER_04: Welcome to the show.
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: Uh thank you very much.
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I saw you guys messing around with your backdrops, and I figured I'd give it a shot.
- 4:57SPEAKER_02: And then uh I was blurred out and I figured, hey, let's from let's see what we can show of Padel and Pickleball.
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: But uh uh hopefully my Wi-Fi connection stays up tight and uh and we're here because otherwise I'll be where that backdrop is putting out fires.
- 5:12SPEAKER_09: So so so last week you may not have seen it.
- 5:15SPEAKER_09: If you have, go to our Instagram or YouTube feed.
- 5:17SPEAKER_09: But somebody had the great idea to put roller blades and hockey equipment on along with gloves and play pickleball in a uh very cracked and old asphalt parking lot.
- 5:30SPEAKER_09: And we were plus 50 in age.
- 5:33SPEAKER_04: Um neither one of us got hurt.
- 5:34SPEAKER_09: No, thankfully, neither one of us got hurt.
- 5:36SPEAKER_09: But you know, one of the things I I think really since one of the first you know episodes we had youth hockey players on as guests, pickleball has come up as a sport that a lot of our youth hockey players that we're coaching or we have come to know are playing.
- 5:51SPEAKER_09: And we're just excited to talk um about pickleball, about the genesis of your your location, and and how you know maybe we can you know connect the dots and and and hockey players of all ages can get out of playing a great game of pickleball.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: Looking forward to it.
- 6:07SPEAKER_02: Uh hope I can hope I can drop some knowledge and some information that is beneficial to different ages, different people, because we got we got some hockey players in here that play.
- 6:18SPEAKER_02: So uh get let's let's get into it.
- 6:21SPEAKER_04: Well, I love that.
- 6:22SPEAKER_04: And so uh let we're we're gonna touch on that here in a little bit, but uh uh help our listeners understand, Ryan, how'd you get involved in uh Pedell and pickleball and what made you want to bring the club to life?
- 6:36SPEAKER_04: And uh and and then how'd you end up with uh ex-nhl hockey guys walking through your doors?
- 6:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: So uh our club is uh in the center of in the center of it all, which is you know an Olivet right here off of uh Olive and North Price Road.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: Um we are a club that originated actually from squash.
- 6:59SPEAKER_02: Uh the owners and the partnership group uh we came together and we said, what's we're all squash guys, we all played professional squash for a little bit, did some squash coaching, um, and just kind of came around and said, This Padel thing is the new sport.
- 7:15SPEAKER_02: And obviously, pickleball has been there.
- 7:17SPEAKER_02: Pickleball hit its peak and it skyrocketed during COVID, uh, which, you know, go back to 2020 and pickleball was just booming because A, you were six feet apart.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: Um, and then, you know, other than touching the ball, but uh B, you could set up a net, you could go to Target or Amazon and you could get a ball and a paddle for 20 bucks, and it was inexpensive and accessible.
- 7:40SPEAKER_02: So uh those things kind of create what it is, and then you also don't need to be extremely athletic to do so.
- 7:48SPEAKER_02: Um, and that kind of we know what pickleball is, we know what took off.
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: Um, a lot of uh some of our also our group that put the club together are are international.
- 7:58SPEAKER_02: So we've got a couple from the UK, uh, some Spain, and just kind of saw that Padel is this new craze sport.
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: Padel has been existing, and and it's interesting for us.
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: The hardest part is that our name is Padel plus pickle, and people think, oh, I play pickleball with a pickleball paddle.
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: So they think it's just a pickleball club.
- 8:19SPEAKER_02: But Padell itself is a completely different sport.
- 8:21SPEAKER_02: Um, Padell is probably one of the world's fastest growing sports, uh, along that with pickleball, but Padell has been predominantly South American uh and European.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: So you'd kind of be surprised.
- 8:34SPEAKER_02: Like Sweden has the number one amount of courts per capita throughout the world.
- 8:39SPEAKER_02: It's also huge in Spain and Colombia, South America, all these different places.
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: And now the US has taken obviously someone else did it, so we're gonna take it over and do it better.
- 8:50SPEAKER_02: So um the sport of Padel since 2022 has grown nearly 2,000% in terms of courts and players uh in the last three years, um, just nonstop growing and growing.
- 9:02SPEAKER_02: When we started back in 2024, we had six Padel courts.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: There were under 600 courts in the United States, so we had 1% of all the courts in the United States, and now you're sitting over 1,000 nearly 1,500 courts of Padell um throughout the United States.
- 9:20SPEAKER_02: So we just said, hey, let's come together, let's put the two sports together.
- 9:23SPEAKER_02: Obviously, pickleball is well known.
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: We want to grow Padell.
- 9:27SPEAKER_02: Uh, let's try to use the pickleball to subsidize and promote the Padell.
- 9:31SPEAKER_02: Let's get people in.
- 9:32SPEAKER_02: Um, and then thus became the really great community that we have here, and it's a complete uh melting pot, if you will, of not necessarily all different types of people, classes, um, genders, ethnicities, all that kind of thing, but predominantly just a melting pot of sports.
- 9:51SPEAKER_02: We've got people that have only played pickleball, uh, they were pickleball players, otherwise, you're getting squash, racquetball, tennis, platform tennis, uh, some that just only had played Padell.
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: So our club is kind of a melting spot of all of those sports put together to come out and play Padell and pickle.
- 10:09SPEAKER_09: Correct me if I'm wrong, but Padell plays with a kind of a paddle with holes in it, and then you've almost got like a tennis ball, correct?
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: Correct.
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and you can kind of see here I'm on my on my screen the blue court is the padell court, and then the orange is is the pickleball.
- 10:26SPEAKER_02: And so the padell is played with a paddle that's um like if you think about a tennis racket, but you don't have any strings, and the inside is made of foam and carbon.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: Um and you put that together, and then the ball itself is very much like a tennis ball, it's just depressurized uh because it bounces off the glass.
- 10:44SPEAKER_02: So the ball is uh the way that the ball bounces, it can bounce off, and the grass is itself, it's synthetic turf.
- 10:50SPEAKER_02: So um you're not hitting off of clay or a hardcourt or grass, if you will.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: Um, it bounces off the turf.
- 10:57SPEAKER_02: So the paddles, the turf, the glass, and the balls are all kind of made specifically to play padel.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: If you brought a tennis ball out, it would go way too fast.
- 11:05SPEAKER_02: It'd be like a bounce ball on the court.
- 11:07SPEAKER_02: Um, and kind of vice versa.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: If you brought a padell ball out to a tennis court, it would feel like a really, really dead ball uh trying to play tennis.
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: Gotcha.
- 11:14SPEAKER_02: So uh, but yeah, they're completely different sports, they're they're not the same.
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: Um, and they're played on two different types of courts as well.
- 11:22SPEAKER_04: So yeah, so uh what is uh so so the XNHL guys are walking through your doors?
- 11:28SPEAKER_04: What's uh from your view, what's the attraction for uh for those guys?
- 11:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so those guys uh I mean those guys are just competitive.
- 11:36SPEAKER_02: It's so it's uh we started kind of with one of our members is a real big supporter and and uh lifelong fan of the blues.
- 11:45SPEAKER_02: Uh he was one of our members and he started bringing over kind of some of these guys uh to play, and one of them was Robert Bortuzo, former Stanley Cup champion um with with the blues, um, who's now officially retired.
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: And he started playing and started loving it.
- 12:00SPEAKER_02: And next thing you know, their season finished.
- 12:03SPEAKER_02: Uh, what did we finish?
- 12:04SPEAKER_02: April?
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: Was that when the blues kind of finished?
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: Um regular, unfortunately.
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 12:11SPEAKER_02: So then in May, uh Robert kind of brings the guys out, says, All right, season's done.
- 12:16SPEAKER_02: We, you know, we're all competitive, we need something to do.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: We don't want to be on the ice anymore because we just did it for you know seven straight months.
- 12:23SPEAKER_02: Um, and next thing you know, we had almost all six of our courts had different, all different blues players, pretty much the team itself came out.
- 12:30SPEAKER_02: Um, they got to play, and then the beauty of it is the sport itself is just addicting.
- 12:34SPEAKER_02: Once you once you play it, um it's so much fun.
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: Padell itself is like I describe it to people that you're like a kid.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: Um, you're like a kid in your basement when you just made up a game with a ball in the wall.
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: Uh and that's kind of how I describe Padell.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: And no two games are the same, no two sets are the same, no two points are the same.
- 12:52SPEAKER_02: Uh and there's just so much to learn and so much strategy.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: And I think for those guys, it's just an open, open court, open field, um, open rink, if you will, uh, to just uh be experimental, have fun, and uh be competitive all in the same in the same area.
- 13:09SPEAKER_09: Well, let's talk about that because we talk about like pickleball and tennis, for instance, where you get this great lateral movement, but it feels like Padel is almost a 360-degree game, especially when you bring in the walls um as as boundaries.
- 13:23SPEAKER_09: What are some things that hockey players or young athletes are gonna get out by you know, both physically and mentally from playing this sport?
- 13:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I think specifically mentally, uh, it just goes to show like uh I describe it as the the Padel court itself, the pickleball court itself, it's played on the court itself is played on the five inches between your ears.
- 13:44SPEAKER_02: Uh and I think, you know, whether and that can be related to golf, hockey, uh whatever it is, you know, as long as you can keep those five inches in between your ears, uh, the ball on the court, um, you can play pretty well.
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: But for these guys, I mean, even watching, I played a lot with Colton Pereco and Robert Thomas.
- 14:01SPEAKER_02: Um, and these guys are out here and they're learning the walls, they're trying to figure out some of them use it like a like a pat, you know, like you guys use the board to pass a puck, you know, you'll use that.
- 14:11SPEAKER_02: You can use the glass to bounce the ball off the wall to keep it in play.
- 14:14SPEAKER_02: It's a perfect synergy of racquetball and tennis put together.
- 14:18SPEAKER_02: So there's a lot of jumping, there's a lot of lateral movement, there's a lot of uh communication, especially too because it's played as doubles.
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: So the best part is you're playing with a partner.
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: Hockey, you know, I guess, unless if you're in a shootout, you're never alone, right?
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: You're always on a team, you're always with your partner, you're always playing.
- 14:34SPEAKER_02: So, in terms of chemistry, it's just a great social game.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: Um, the the the points last 70% longer than that of a standard tennis point, uh, just because the ball stays in, bounces off the walls.
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: Um, but there's a ridiculous amount of lateral movement, split steps.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: Uh, we call them the quick twitch muscles that you got to use.
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: You know, if Coach Jared rips a ball super hard at me, I gotta get out of the way to make sure that the ball can bounce off the wall, then I gotta go track the ball down.
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: Uh, so you're really just not stationary.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: Uh, and I think with in relation to hockey, you guys there's only one guy that's really stationary.
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: Uh, and he's also probably not he's not really supposed to be stationary uh when the puck's coming down his his way, right?
- 15:20SPEAKER_02: So uh that's kind of like the beauty of it.
- 15:22SPEAKER_02: You're always moving, the feet are always on the on the prowl, and um, and the the quick twitch, like you just got to be ready to react.
- 15:29SPEAKER_02: It's great for reaction time, it's great for movement, um, and just overall hand-eye coordination, ball meets, paddle, puck meets, stick, uh, you know, those types of things.
- 15:39SPEAKER_02: And it's just been, I think it's just been a great way that these these hockey guys have just learned the same use, you know.
- 15:45SPEAKER_02: You don't want to hit the ball too hard, you don't want to hit that slap shot too hard, you know, that kind of thing, because you don't need it to to win as long as you hit the right shot.
- 15:52SPEAKER_04: What do you think?
- 15:53SPEAKER_04: Uh what have you seen?
- 15:55SPEAKER_04: What's been your observation on uh what translates for these hockey guys over to uh Padel uh and pickleball?
- 16:06SPEAKER_04: Uh is it hand-eye coordination?
- 16:08SPEAKER_04: You talked a little bit just a minute ago uh uh about footwork.
- 16:13SPEAKER_04: Uh what do you see that uh in terms of them grasping these sports uh quickly?
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: I think uh honestly it's easy to say I can easily say hand-eye coordination, we can say footwork, we can say competitiveness.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: Uh, but for me, I really think the number one thing that I see in relation is is I would use the word control.
- 16:34SPEAKER_02: So uh it's it's I mean Colton Barico is six foot six.
- 16:39SPEAKER_02: If I hit a bad lob to this guy, he can smash it hard at me anytime that he wants.
- 16:44SPEAKER_02: Um, but with the game itself, you know, I I actually have even said this to Colton.
- 16:48SPEAKER_02: I'm like, hey dude, you don't necessarily need to, just because you're there, you don't need to hit the ball super, super hard because you might hit it super hard and I can get that rebound.
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: And then next thing you know, you went from offense to defense like that.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: So for you, what you got to learn is to how to control that shot.
- 17:04SPEAKER_02: How do you control that ball?
- 17:05SPEAKER_02: Do I hit it with extra power to make sure I win the point, or just because I'm on the offense, I can have I can actually set up a better shot to make myself have a winning, you know, area.
- 17:14SPEAKER_02: So for them, I think it's been the same thing with like if I'm trying to hit a drop shot, if I'm trying to make a you know, make my opponent move.
- 17:22SPEAKER_02: The the word control comes to mind because with these guys, it comes off hard, they play hard, uh, but you know, sometimes that cross-ice path, the pass doesn't need to be extremely hard.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: And sometimes there might be another uh a pass across the ice or a pass up the rink that is actually better for you in terms of setting up the winning shot versus actually trying to go for it too quickly when that might be out of your control.
- 17:47SPEAKER_04: So with these guys look at Ryan.
- 17:51SPEAKER_09: I think Ryan wants a job as our job as our video coach.
- 17:58SPEAKER_09: You know what I what I loved earlier when you talked about being able to to what you know move with mo you know track the ball, watch it come off the back wall potentially.
- 18:09SPEAKER_09: These are all concepts that we teach in hockey.
- 18:11SPEAKER_09: We teach what's called tracking, where players have to watch, you know, they've got to be watching the play, you know, tracking where the puck is, getting back and back checking.
- 18:21SPEAKER_09: That one's for you, coach.
- 18:22SPEAKER_09: Scanning.
- 18:22SPEAKER_09: Um scanning, you know, making sure that you're scanning the ice, you know, for both keeping yourself safe, doing what we call shoulder checking, but also scanning and trying to see, okay, not only where is the puck, but how where do I need to be when I'm not playing with the puck on my stick?
- 18:38SPEAKER_09: Feels like there's a lot of while not exact replication of that, but you're the observation, and I love the five inches between your ears playing with that muscle first.
- 18:48SPEAKER_09: So it feels to me like this is a great, you know, and even better match than maybe pickleball or tennis.
- 18:54SPEAKER_04: Sounds like we need to play it.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: I think so.
- 18:56SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 18:57SPEAKER_02: Once you get out here, and and it's funny that you mentioned that because we do have this drill that we teach to our members and and players at the club specifically.
- 19:04SPEAKER_02: We're gonna do drill draw.
- 19:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:07SPEAKER_02: Um, it's called we call it the tether drill.
- 19:09SPEAKER_02: And on we you basically you kind of like tie a string around your waist, and there's a specific length between that.
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: And it would be like you, Drew, and Jared would have the string between you.
- 19:19SPEAKER_02: And if Jared runs up there, then Drew also needs to run up there because you need to work in tandem with your partner.
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: And if Drew runs up but Jared stays back, it shows that you guys are off on your coordination, and Drew might be a sitting duck because he ran up but Drew stayed back, and Drew hit a Jared hit a bad shot.
- 19:36SPEAKER_02: Drew, you know, that kind of thing.
- 19:38SPEAKER_02: So uh for us, it's the yeah, the partner thing is hey, if I'm moving up to off be on offense, you're coming with me.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: And if I get lobbed, you're coming back to defend with me.
- 19:46SPEAKER_02: Uh, and we're always trying to work in unison.
- 19:48SPEAKER_04: I I I I I can foresee uh us playing this game.
- 19:52SPEAKER_09: I you you would want to tie the forwards to the defenseman so they have to go back.
- 19:56SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 19:57SPEAKER_04: We want back checking.
- 19:59SPEAKER_04: So I I gotta ask, uh uh has there been uh and you you can name names if you want, or you can uh keep it anonymous, that's fine too.
- 20:10SPEAKER_04: But uh, have you encountered a hockey player that's come in and it's just been like, I'm gonna just destroy this?
- 20:17SPEAKER_04: This is gonna be a piece of cake, and then has found through playing maybe they're humbled a little bit.
- 20:23SPEAKER_04: Have you have you have you seen that happen with maybe a hockey player coming in?
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: Um, so not not really.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: Uh, I've only seen I've only seen them where they've acted within each other, and then some real Padel player steps on court and they get humbered, humbled real quick.
- 20:41SPEAKER_02: They think that they know what they're doing.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: And uh, I mean, that was kind of the first time when I played with Rob and Colton.
- 20:46SPEAKER_02: Uh if you go out there with four if you uh if you go out there with four guys that have never played it before, the four of you are just you know bashing the ball around, trying to figure it out.
- 20:58SPEAKER_02: But the moment you get a guy on there that knows how to move you around and lob you and and put you in different areas that make you uncomfortable, those that's that's kind of what then then they get humbled and then they you know they ask for the coaching.
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, and we've had uh like last week we had the BMW, Akshay Bhatiya came in here uh after his Wednesday practice round, um, had played a couple of times.
- 21:19SPEAKER_02: Uh we've had some of the St.
- 21:21SPEAKER_02: Louis City soccer uh players come in and and play it.
- 21:25SPEAKER_02: So um not necessarily just hockey, but we've had a couple of, I don't really, I don't know off the top of my head, nobody's really come to me and been like, I'm gonna beat the you know living daylights out of you.
- 21:34SPEAKER_02: Um, but I we have I have seen that within their group, they all I mean they're just super competitive guys.
- 21:41SPEAKER_02: So they all they all just, you know, um, hey chance, you're gonna go sit with the you're gonna play with Ryan because you're the worst of the three of us, you know, like uh you know, stuff like that.
- 21:51SPEAKER_02: And then um, next thing you know, a rivalry forms uh and and we've got a weekly matchup.
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: So well.
- 22:00SPEAKER_09: Talk a little bit about, I mean, you're in a you're running a two-sport facility, you're in a very tradition-rich sports town.
- 22:06SPEAKER_09: Obviously, baseball has been a huge uh cornerstone of youth sports and obviously all the way to professional sports.
- 22:13SPEAKER_09: Uh soccer, as you mentioned, is is really starting to catch on and is just become such a huge following.
- 22:20SPEAKER_09: And then the blues, um, I think has one of the most rabid uh fan bases.
- 22:24SPEAKER_09: So, how are you marketing or are you working with other other clubs as far as youth sports to say, hey, this is more than just a novelty.
- 22:32SPEAKER_09: We'd love for your kids and for you know you adults to come out here and you know, instead of joining a bowling league, join a Padel League or join a pickleball league.
- 22:41SPEAKER_09: What's the business side of this been like for you?
- 22:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so for us, we're a member-based social club.
- 22:46SPEAKER_02: So it's it's not necessarily like a bowling alley where you can just come and book a lane uh and then you know, book a front of the.
- 22:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 22:57SPEAKER_02: And off you go.
- 22:58SPEAKER_02: Um, we're kind of we're kind of different in that mindset, and we purposely did that as a business uh uh when we started.
- 23:05SPEAKER_02: There's a there's a lot of pickleball places in the area that you can play, uh, a lot of indoor courts, a lot of outdoor courts, a lot of former tennis courts turned into pickleball courts.
- 23:15SPEAKER_02: Um and so for us, we wanted to create a better overall experience, uh, have a higher membership value.
- 23:24SPEAKER_02: Uh we have we have a gym inside, we have saunas, we have cold plunges, uh, we've got a bar.
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: And so the idea, we have showers, towel service, um, and we just have extremely knowledgeable staff.
- 23:35SPEAKER_02: So the idea with our place is that uh being member based, we can say, you know, if you if you if you two are members, you guys come up and say, Hey, you know, we've got a great idea for a league on you know Saturday mornings, we want to run it with singles, or hey, here's a great idea for a clinic.
- 23:49SPEAKER_02: We were gonna grab you know, six to eight people.
- 23:51SPEAKER_02: Boom, right off the cuff, we can do that, we can create that, and and we curate basically member experiences um to make you feel valued as being a member.
- 24:00SPEAKER_02: And you get to walk in and you get to say, Oh, I'm a member of the club, or uh out there you say, I'm a member of Padell and Pickle.
- 24:07SPEAKER_02: You're certainly allowed to come in and play as a non-member.
- 24:10SPEAKER_02: There are higher fees to it.
- 24:12SPEAKER_02: Uh, we do restrict people after four visits.
- 24:15SPEAKER_02: They pretty much need to buy a day pass if they've reached their four visits.
- 24:19SPEAKER_02: Um, during those four visits, you'll play, you'll pay a higher price than a member would.
- 24:23SPEAKER_02: Um, and basically, we're trying to create longevity.
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: We're trying to not necessarily have um like that bowling alley analogy that I came up with.
- 24:31SPEAKER_02: We don't want people coming in, renting the paddles, renting the balls, disrespecting the facility, disrespecting uh the staff and what we give, um, because that that experience just is is really off-putting.
- 24:43SPEAKER_02: Um, and we've heard you know some stories about that around other clubs.
- 24:46SPEAKER_02: And for us, it's easier to rein it in, hone it in, and and create a business model that way.
- 24:51SPEAKER_02: Uh, certainly a lot of struggles with that in the beginning, because if you don't have any members and you're trying to promote a member club, then people are a little appalled at the fact that there are open courts, but you got to be a member to play.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: So, but now over the 29, 30 months that we've been in business, uh, we're sitting over 900 total members.
- 25:12SPEAKER_02: Uh, we got a good, very good mix of people playing Padell, people playing pickleball, and uh and actually a good combination of people crossing over but between the two of them.
- 25:22SPEAKER_02: So uh you can come on in.
- 25:23SPEAKER_02: We have I'm the general manager, we have a director of membership and sales, we have a director of rackets who does all the programming for leagues.
- 25:31SPEAKER_02: Uh and again, for leagues, tournaments, clinics, nobody needs to be a member.
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: You can come on in, you can join our head pro Cliff Marslin.
- 25:38SPEAKER_02: Uh Cliff Marslin is one of 32 professionals in the world that is a four-star certified Rackets coach, which means that he is a certified Padel coach, pickleball coach, platform coach, and tennis coach.
- 25:52SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 25:52SPEAKER_02: Um, so talk about a guy that's like level five.
- 25:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, maybe level six.
- 25:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 25:58SPEAKER_02: So talk about a guy that knows his stuff.
- 26:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:02SPEAKER_02: Uh like a game of thrones that title.
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:07SPEAKER_02: Um well and so lately, uh lately Cliff has actually he's got a junior program.
- 26:12SPEAKER_02: So Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, uh, I believe it's 4 30 to 6.
- 26:16SPEAKER_02: He's got junior pickleball clinics uh that specifically are targeted to each day is kind of targeted to either a different age group or a different level.
- 26:24SPEAKER_02: Um, and so anybody's able to come on in.
- 26:27SPEAKER_02: And for juniors, those kids, it's ten dollars a month to be a member if you're under the age of 27.
- 26:31SPEAKER_02: So it's pretty cheap.
- 26:33SPEAKER_02: And uh you gotta just come in and you just basically get to come in and play with one of the best coaches in the, in my opinion, the country.
- 26:40SPEAKER_04: I love it.
- 26:40SPEAKER_04: And you just talked about kids and uh leagues, and so uh, you know, our audience, Ryan, consists not only of hockey mom and dads that are out there, coaches, also the players themselves.
- 26:53SPEAKER_04: So talk to our young players that might be out there listening.
- 26:58SPEAKER_04: And uh let's say you're a 12 to 16-year-old hockey player.
- 27:04SPEAKER_04: Uh what could you say to them that they're gonna get out of playing physically, or what are they gonna get out of it?
- 27:10SPEAKER_04: Physically, what are they gonna get out of it mentally by considering a pedell or pickleball league?
- 27:16SPEAKER_04: What what can you share with them?
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: So physically, we've kind of already hit on your hand-eye coordination uh is a really big one.
- 27:25SPEAKER_02: Uh, your movement and and your synergy with your partner, because you can play singles pickleball, but it's predominantly played in in doubles.
- 27:33SPEAKER_02: Um mentally, what I what I would definitely say that I've learned myself, even playing pickleball.
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: I was a squash guy.
- 27:40SPEAKER_02: If you know anything about squash or tennis guys, they always poo-poo the pickleball thing.
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: Um, and uh, and lately I've been playing a lot of pickleball.
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: I play in our league on Tuesday.
- 27:50SPEAKER_02: And the one thing that I've learned like mentally that was kind of a shell shock to me was the just the mantra of you might be down, but you're never out.
- 27:59SPEAKER_02: And um, for example, yesterday I was in a pickleball in our tournament and I was down, we played it, we played a 21 in our leagues, and uh, and I was we were down 17 to 3.
- 28:09SPEAKER_02: Uh, and I'm I'm a pretty good player, I'm pretty one of the better ones at the club, but being down 17 to 3 was quite embarrassing.
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: Um, and I was just completely out, I was completely down, and I was, you know, my partner kind of grabbed me and just picked me up.
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: He said, you know, let's fix these vibes.
- 28:23SPEAKER_02: We ended up losing 21 to 18, but we did push it to 18 all.
- 28:27SPEAKER_02: Um, and it just completely, you know, it just completely changes.
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: And it just goes to show that uh although you might be down, you're never out.
- 28:35SPEAKER_02: Um, at the end of the day, you still need to play to 21.
- 28:38SPEAKER_02: Uh, I'm sure with hockey, you know, I don't know what you guys do at your level, but with hockey, you're, you know, you might be you got to play 20 minutes.
- 28:44SPEAKER_02: The period's 20 minutes long.
- 28:46SPEAKER_02: So you got to play all 20 minutes, you don't get to stop, you don't, you're not allowed to stop.
- 28:50SPEAKER_02: Um, and if you do, kind of shame on you.
- 28:53SPEAKER_02: You don't deserve to be out there.
- 28:55SPEAKER_02: So, from from our standpoint, from the pickleball, it's it's really quick like that.
- 28:59SPEAKER_02: It's quick points, it's uh it's quick changing offense defense.
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: That's another huge thing that I would harp on.
- 29:06SPEAKER_02: Whether that's physic you want to put quote that in the physical or the mental category.
- 29:10SPEAKER_02: Um, it's it's it's real easy to stand there.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: Anyone can stand at the net and just power the ball down, right?
- 29:17SPEAKER_02: But once somebody puts you a drop shot in and then they come on offense and you're on defense, the offense to defense switches extremely fast, extremely quick.
- 29:27SPEAKER_02: And you gotta be able to recognize in both sports for us, Padel and Pickleball, they do that as well.
- 29:32SPEAKER_02: They both switch from offense to defense real quick.
- 29:35SPEAKER_02: And the best part is about the knowledge and the mental side is is understanding when am I on offense?
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: When I'm on offense, what shots can I hit?
- 29:43SPEAKER_02: Okay, now I'm on defense.
- 29:44SPEAKER_02: What if I'm on defense?
- 29:45SPEAKER_02: What shots, you know, what shots are open to me, and what shots am I trying to feed into pressure or b relieve the pressure?
- 29:52SPEAKER_02: And you know, which is which one is my higher percentage shot, if you will.
- 29:56SPEAKER_09: I mean, he's using every turn.
- 29:59SPEAKER_04: Every turn.
- 30:00SPEAKER_04: You just need to be in a nice hockey locker room and give you a mic and uh and a coach's jacket.
- 30:04SPEAKER_04: I love it.
- 30:05SPEAKER_09: Well, I think uh I think a future uh I think a future um stupid hockey trick, Grant challenge, is we make uh Grant stand at the net when Colton Frank goes back to field tilt.
- 30:18SPEAKER_09: Well, Ryan, thanks for joining us today.
- 30:20SPEAKER_08: I didn't agree to that.
- 30:22SPEAKER_09: Yeah, there he is.
- 30:24SPEAKER_09: Um real quick before we uh we say goodnight here, or say goodbye on the interview.
- 30:30SPEAKER_09: Where can our listeners come?
- 30:31SPEAKER_09: What's a website?
- 30:32SPEAKER_09: Where can they come check things out?
- 30:33SPEAKER_09: You have an email address, some contact information.

- 37:47SPEAKER_08: Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.
- 37:50SPEAKER_08: And without further ado, a Drew, a Drew, a Drew, the trivia today will be hockey themed, but you both will have different sets of trivia.
- 38:01SPEAKER_08: Because I believe Coach Drew is a St.
- 38:04SPEAKER_08: Louis Blues fan, and Coach Jared is a Detroit Red Wings fan.
- 38:10SPEAKER_08: So I'll be seeing how well each of you know your respective hockey club.
- 38:18SPEAKER_08: We are going to start, we'll go, we'll go every other.
- 38:22SPEAKER_08: We'll start here with Coach Drew, uh testing his knowledge of the St.
- 38:29SPEAKER_08: Louis Blues.
- 38:30SPEAKER_08: Coach Drew.
- 38:32SPEAKER_08: Which St.
- 38:33SPEAKER_08: Louis Blues player holds the record for most career points with the franchise?
- 38:39SPEAKER_08: Ooh.
- 38:39SPEAKER_08: With the franchise.
- 38:42SPEAKER_04: Most career points of the franchise.
- 38:43SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna say that's Brett Hall.
- 38:46SPEAKER_08: Can we say that one more time?
- 38:47SPEAKER_08: I apologize.

- 38:56SPEAKER_04: How about that?
- 38:57SPEAKER_07: For the blues.
- 38:58SPEAKER_04: For the blues, yeah.
- 38:59SPEAKER_07: For the blues.
- 39:01SPEAKER_07: They both played for the Red Wings, too.
- 39:02SPEAKER_09: I know, but I mean, Brett had a lot of points for the blues.
- 39:05SPEAKER_09: He did.

- 44:07SPEAKER_08: That is a lesson to everyone out there why you should not use ChatGBT.
- 44:12SPEAKER_08: Wow.
- 44:13SPEAKER_08: That's why you shouldn't use Chat GBT.
- 44:15SPEAKER_04: And it was awesome.
- 44:17SPEAKER_04: So I was I was wondering if maybe they gave it to the shooter versus the one that got the tip.
- 44:22SPEAKER_04: So yes.
- 44:24SPEAKER_09: It's one-one, but I'm I'm I've I've got a chance to I gotta keep my lead here, right?

- 45:17SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 45:18SPEAKER_08: Um, Coach Drew, I'm gonna ask a similar uh question.
- 45:24SPEAKER_08: Okay, who scored the blues game-winning goal in double overtime against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1981 playoffs?
- 45:33SPEAKER_08: Would this have been 10-year-old Coach Drew?
- 45:36SPEAKER_04: Maybe uh that would have been nine-year-old.
- 45:40SPEAKER_08: Nine-year-old, okay.
- 45:41SPEAKER_04: Okay, so tell me again, 81 and say the question one more time.
- 45:45SPEAKER_08: Who scored the game-winning goal of a double overtime game in the 1981 Stanley Cup playoffs against the Pittsburgh Penguins?
- 45:55unknown: 81.

- 46:18SPEAKER_08: Coach Jared leaves 2-1.
- 46:21SPEAKER_08: Um, where can I stump Coach Jared?
- 46:31SPEAKER_08: It's not hard.
- 46:32SPEAKER_08: It's not hard.
- 46:33SPEAKER_08: Let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see.
- 46:36SPEAKER_08: Coach Jared, who's the oldest player to ever appear in a game for the Detroit Red Wings?

- 47:00SPEAKER_09: It's and Chris Chelios was the oldest player ever to play in a playoff game.
- 47:09SPEAKER_09: I'm gonna regret this, but because I'm just breaking my rule.
- 47:13SPEAKER_09: But I'm when in doubt, you should go with Mr.
- 47:15SPEAKER_09: Hockey, but I'm gonna go Chris Chelios.
- 47:20SPEAKER_08: It's Cordy Howell.
- 47:21SPEAKER_09: Cordy Howell.
- 47:23SPEAKER_09: See, I told you trying to be too sick.
- 47:26SPEAKER_09: All right.
- 47:26SPEAKER_08: Through four questions, it's 2-1, Coach Jared, Coach Drew.
- 47:32SPEAKER_08: Um Brett Hole scored 72 goals in 1990.
- 47:38SPEAKER_08: Whose blues single season goal record did he break that season?
- 47:43SPEAKER_08: It was 55 goals, was the single season goal record before Brett Hull scored 70.
- 47:56SPEAKER_04: Bernie Federka.
- 47:58SPEAKER_09: I think I think I know.
- 48:01SPEAKER_09: Is Brett Hull?
- 48:02SPEAKER_09: Is Brett Hull?
- 48:03SPEAKER_08: No, it was Wayne Babbage.
- 48:06SPEAKER_09: Brett Hull didn't score 50 goals before he scored 70.
- 48:10SPEAKER_09: Are you kidding me?
- 48:11SPEAKER_09: That's what NHL.com has.
- 48:13SPEAKER_09: All right, I believe it then.
- 48:14SPEAKER_09: I'm like, hey, you know, but uh Babbage was good.
- 48:17SPEAKER_07: Babbage was good.
- 48:18SPEAKER_07: He had uh he he had an awesome mustache.
- 48:21SPEAKER_09: Oh, he had a great mustache.

- 48:49SPEAKER_08: I've asked a lot of see a lot of Red Wing's history is kind of the same history because I was about to ask a question with Cordy, how is the answer again?

- 48:58SPEAKER_08: Hacker.
- 48:59SPEAKER_08: Let's see if you can get this one.

- 49:04SPEAKER_08: Which Detroit players scored the triple overtime winning goal in game six of the 1950 Stanley Cup final, which clenched the Stanley Cup for the Detroit Red Wings.
- 49:19SPEAKER_08: 1950.
- 49:21SPEAKER_08: 1950.
- 49:23SPEAKER_08: You asked me to keep it 1972 and onwards.
- 49:26SPEAKER_08: Yeah, apparently that's not good.
- 49:28SPEAKER_08: But with your own squad, you should know the history.
- 49:30SPEAKER_08: Like, I know I know the 1942 Cardinals roster one series.
- 49:36SPEAKER_09: Sure.
- 49:36SPEAKER_09: Sure.
- 49:37SPEAKER_09: Um so I'm gonna say it was.
- 49:52SPEAKER_09: Okay.
- 49:53SPEAKER_09: It's not Gordy Howe.
- 49:56SPEAKER_09: So it would be 1950.
- 49:58SPEAKER_09: I'm gonna go sitable.
- 50:05SPEAKER_08: Peepabondo.
- 50:07SPEAKER_09: Peep Babondo.
- 50:08SPEAKER_08: Okay, this is our last round of questions here.
- 50:11SPEAKER_08: Wow.
- 50:12SPEAKER_09: They picked him up from Toronto.
- 50:14SPEAKER_08: It's 2-1.
- 50:16SPEAKER_08: So Coach Drew has to get this right to put the pressure on Coach.
- 50:24SPEAKER_08: Let's go.
- 50:24SPEAKER_08: Let's go.
- 50:25SPEAKER_09: We gotta go to OT though, too.

- 50:43SPEAKER_08: Oh, I there's two in that they're both kind of tough.
- 50:46SPEAKER_08: I don't know which one you would get.
- 50:48SPEAKER_08: Uh, I think you might know this one.
- 50:50SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 50:51SPEAKER_08: Which blues player broke the NHL consecutive games record in 1976 playing in his 631st consecutive game?
- 51:06SPEAKER_08: Jesus.
- 51:07SPEAKER_08: Okay, you don't know this one.
- 51:09SPEAKER_08: You know what?
- 51:09SPEAKER_08: I'm gonna pivot.
- 51:10SPEAKER_08: I'm gonna pivot.
- 51:11SPEAKER_08: I'm gonna ax it out.
- 51:12SPEAKER_08: If you don't get this one, you were well and alive, and this was your teenage years during this question, okay?
- 51:19SPEAKER_08: Okay, which blues defenseman scored the overtime winner in the famous 1986 Monday Night Miracle game.
- 51:29SPEAKER_04: Monday Night Miracle was uh it you said he was a defenseman.
- 51:36SPEAKER_04: No, Doug Wickenheiser.
- 51:40SPEAKER_08: Let me see.
- 51:41SPEAKER_08: One second, one second, one second.
- 51:42SPEAKER_08: Yes, that's correct.
- 51:44SPEAKER_08: I don't know why they haven't listened as a defenseman, but Doug Wickenheiser is correct.
- 51:51SPEAKER_04: Doug Wickenheiser.
- 51:53SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 51:55SPEAKER_09: We're not in overtime.
- 51:56SPEAKER_09: We're not in overtime.
- 51:57SPEAKER_04: I can I can win.
- 51:58SPEAKER_04: Jared can win it.
- 52:00SPEAKER_04: Jared can win it right here.
- 52:01SPEAKER_08: We're in a walk-off situation.
- 52:03SPEAKER_08: We're in the bottom of the ninth here.
- 52:05SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 52:06SPEAKER_08: All right.
- 52:07SPEAKER_08: Here we go.
- 52:09SPEAKER_08: The Red Wings' famous 11-game winning streak in the 1995-1996 season ended against what team?
- 52:21SPEAKER_09: Great question.
- 52:22SPEAKER_09: 95-96.
- 52:25SPEAKER_09: Hartford?
- 52:26SPEAKER_09: Hartford?
- 52:27SPEAKER_09: Yeah, it's it's somebody that was not um they were.
- 52:34SPEAKER_09: They were uh San Jose Sharks.
- 52:40SPEAKER_08: We're going over time.
- 52:42SPEAKER_08: It was the New Jersey Devils.
- 52:46unknown: Okay.
- 52:46SPEAKER_08: They also beat him in the Stanley Cup Finals that year.
- 52:49SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 52:49SPEAKER_08: Let me um, I'm crafting up.
- 52:52SPEAKER_08: Actually, I can ask the question um now while I search it up.
- 52:57SPEAKER_08: The tiebreaker is going to be how many all-time wins do the blues and the red wings respectively have?
- 53:06SPEAKER_08: You each answer for the like Coach Drew answered for the blues, Coach Jared for the Red Wings.
- 53:11SPEAKER_08: You can go over, it's not price or right rules.
- 53:14SPEAKER_08: It's closest to the pen.
- 53:16SPEAKER_04: Closest to the pen.
- 53:17SPEAKER_04: Alright, hang on a second.
- 53:19SPEAKER_09: As of last year.
- 53:20SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 53:22SPEAKER_09: Okay.
- 53:23SPEAKER_08: So I want I want how many wins they have.
- 53:27SPEAKER_08: I don't care about it.
- 53:28SPEAKER_09: Not including play regular season.
- 53:29SPEAKER_09: Not including playoffs.
- 53:31SPEAKER_09: Doesn't include playoffs.
- 53:32SPEAKER_09: Right.
- 53:32SPEAKER_09: Regular season.
- 53:33SPEAKER_09: Alright.
- 53:42SPEAKER_08: Doing some math here.
- 53:44SPEAKER_08: I'm trying to find out the answer as well.
- 53:54SPEAKER_09: Well, I mean, I'm gonna wings should be an easier one because they've they've been around a hundred years.
- 54:11SPEAKER_09: And the blues are just finished up their 50th, right?
- 54:16SPEAKER_09: Right?
- 54:16SPEAKER_09: A little over 59 seasons.
- 54:18SPEAKER_09: 59.
- 54:18SPEAKER_09: So I was gonna say 60th year.
- 54:20SPEAKER_09: So almost their 60th year, great.
- 54:22SPEAKER_09: All right.
- 54:23SPEAKER_09: Closest to the pin.
- 54:24SPEAKER_09: Closest to the pin.
- 54:25SPEAKER_09: Okay.
- 54:27SPEAKER_09: Doesn't matter you over or under, it's just the closest to the pin.
- 54:29SPEAKER_09: Yes.
- 54:30SPEAKER_07: Coach Drew, I want to hear yours first.
- 54:32SPEAKER_07: Total wins, right?
- 54:33SPEAKER_08: Not including playoffs.
- 54:34SPEAKER_08: Regular season over.
- 54:35SPEAKER_08: Not including playoffs.
- 54:36SPEAKER_08: Overtime wins count.
- 54:39SPEAKER_08: Those cheapies.
- 54:40SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 54:41SPEAKER_04: Here's my number.
- 54:42SPEAKER_04: 2,537.
- 54:45SPEAKER_04: Okay, one second.
- 54:48SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 54:49SPEAKER_08: 2,537?
- 54:51SPEAKER_09: Correct.
- 54:52SPEAKER_09: Okay.
- 54:53SPEAKER_09: So I'm gonna say including overtime wins, over a hundred year history, the Red Wings have 624 wins.
- 55:06SPEAKER_08: They have 624 wins?
- 55:09SPEAKER_09: 624 wins.
- 55:11SPEAKER_09: No, I'm sorry.
- 55:12SPEAKER_09: No, no, sorry.
- 55:13SPEAKER_09: No, hang on.
- 55:14SPEAKER_09: 160.
- 55:17SPEAKER_09: Yeah, six thousand six thousand two hundred and forty.
- 55:20SPEAKER_09: Six thousand two hundred and forty wins.
- 55:22SPEAKER_09: Six thousand two hundred and forty wins.
- 55:24SPEAKER_08: I was concerned about you.
- 55:26SPEAKER_09: I'm sorry.
- 55:26SPEAKER_09: Gotta add the extra the extra zero.
- 55:28SPEAKER_09: Mass undefeated.
- 55:29SPEAKER_09: Six thousand two hundred and forty wins.
- 55:31SPEAKER_08: Not even close.
- 55:36SPEAKER_08: Coach Drew.
- 55:37SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 55:38SPEAKER_08: Is our victory.
- 55:42SPEAKER_08: What's the total wins for ball?
- 55:43SPEAKER_08: The Detroit Red Wings have three thousand one hundred and seventy-seven wins.
- 55:49SPEAKER_08: The St.
- 55:49SPEAKER_08: Louis Blues have two thousand one hundred and thirty-nine wins.
- 55:54SPEAKER_09: Because for 40 plus years of the Detroit Red Wings' existence, they played like 40 games instead of eight.
- 56:01SPEAKER_09: So I was doing I yep.
- 56:02SPEAKER_09: So I gotta factor in the number of games.
- 56:05SPEAKER_09: I was going, yes, I was going average games like 70.
- 56:09SPEAKER_09: Um, but nah, okay.
- 56:11SPEAKER_09: Well, hey, well done.
- 56:12SPEAKER_09: Well done.
- 56:12SPEAKER_09: Well done.
- 56:13SPEAKER_09: Well, that was good.
- 56:14SPEAKER_09: I like it.
- 56:14SPEAKER_08: I mean, that was some good trivia.
- 56:16SPEAKER_09: You got it, you got a victory.
- 56:17unknown: I know.
- 56:18SPEAKER_09: It's good.
- 56:18unknown: I know.
- 56:19SPEAKER_08: You're on the board.
- 56:20SPEAKER_04: And uh great questions.
- 56:22SPEAKER_04: Very good question.
- 56:23SPEAKER_09: Very, very good questions.
- 56:25SPEAKER_09: Well, you know, we've got uh we talked about this earlier with the uh the season upon us, and um, you know, one of the things that I I know we're starting to go through, we're gonna have a coaches meeting next week for Ledoux.
- 56:38SPEAKER_09: Um, obviously with the Eagles and with your son's afton team and the Rockets teams, we're we're all kind of like thinking about our um our what type of teams we want to coach.
- 56:50SPEAKER_09: What type of what's the what's the persona of our teams?
- 56:52SPEAKER_09: And one of the things the identity.
- 56:54SPEAKER_09: The identity.
- 56:55SPEAKER_09: You know, one of the things that I um I was using persona because I was working on ICP personas today.
- 57:02SPEAKER_09: Uh too much going on.
- 57:04SPEAKER_09: Um, but one of the things that I was thinking about as we were, I was on the ice last night or two nights ago, is uh we don't talk about this enough, but we need to get our kids, and I would encourage our coaches to get our kids to tell every shift you're finishing at the other players' net, other teams' net.
- 57:22SPEAKER_09: Finish at the net.
- 57:23SPEAKER_09: And I think if you have that mentality, we always talk about a good shift.
- 57:28SPEAKER_09: It's about your shift, uh playing in the offensive zone as much as possible and trying to finish at the net, whether it's a goal, whether it's a scrum, whether it's uh a shot that gets that gets saved, and you're driving the net.
- 57:42SPEAKER_09: Every shift let's we should be trying to finish at the net.
- 57:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and I think those two things you can combine.
- 57:47SPEAKER_04: I mean, I I uh I think you make a good point when you say a good shift.
- 57:52SPEAKER_04: Uh, what uh I would encourage hockey coaches to do is set that expectation, define what a good shift means to your players, because otherwise you might have kids looking around going, I don't know what a good shift is.
- 58:06SPEAKER_04: Maybe I just need to skate really hard, and that's a good shift.
- 58:09SPEAKER_04: So if you're a coach, frame that expectation.
- 58:12SPEAKER_04: But where I think it's connected is uh those are some identity kind of things.
- 58:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 58:17SPEAKER_04: So our identity as a uh as a team on a good shift is to finish at the net.
- 58:24SPEAKER_04: Uh a coach you and I both know John Mattingley, I think does a great job.
- 58:29SPEAKER_04: Uh, I've heard him talk about how he has kids uh literally do word association and they'll come up to a marker board and write down, or maybe you know, stick a word on uh uh first on puck, uh back checking.
- 58:45SPEAKER_04: You pick however way you want to define it, but then all the kids come up to the board, they write something down or put a sticker up, and then after everybody's gone, you look at the board and say, Okay, yeah, this is who we are.
- 59:00SPEAKER_04: How many uh did we have of the same word or the same sticker that was put on?
- 59:06SPEAKER_04: And uh you you let your players in that case kind of define your identity for younger kids.
- 59:13SPEAKER_04: I think you probably need a little bit more of a coach's hand in that to say, um, good teams I have seen as a coach exhibit these kinds of characteristics and kind of um explain and set that expectation with your players.
- 59:30SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I I love the the association, the word association, and you start to create these these themes amongst your players and the teams.
- 59:38SPEAKER_09: We did something similar.
- 59:40SPEAKER_09: I ironically took that from from John as well.
- 59:43SPEAKER_09: We actually created a dock uh like almost like a letter that the team all signed.
- 59:47SPEAKER_09: Um, and I think it's important at this time of year.
- 59:51SPEAKER_09: Um every team's unique, every player's unique.
- 59:55SPEAKER_09: And so when you get these unique players on these teams year to year, you have this opportunity as a coach to kind of, you know, um, it's like it's it's it's almost refreshing every season.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_09: You know, you're doing things similar, but you're also able to take the identity and the personalities of your team and coach to that.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_09: You know, one of the things though, um, as you look at some foundational stuff, and as we're heading into September, you know, coaches tend to work on, you know, conditioning and and skill work.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_09: And um, you know, in the old days, we would, you know, our skating drills would be cones and you'd have edges and you're skating the circles.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_09: And and I think that the game has evolved so much that um we're starting to do things in in a little bit smaller areas with skating.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_09: So for instance, Monday we had you know 2v2, they would go and they do their edge works around a tire, and then they go up and do a tight turn around another tire.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_09: But rather than just have it be a race, you throw a puck out there and you say, Okay, go get the bone, go see who can get this bone and can fight for it, not just win the puck first on puck, but if you're not first on puck, what are you doing?
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_09: And every these kids are learning their edge work and they're and they're um you know working on their skating and they're working on some of their skills without even knowing it, knowing it.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_09: And Tim Baylis with the guy I coach with, he likes to say, we're putting the vegetables in with the with the ice cream, you know, because they're they're getting this work without even knowing it.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_09: And so, you know, we have this great opportunity, this great on-ramp now as the season starts.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_09: And I'm excited to to take some new things from last year and from some of the coaches that we've talked to and instill it with Ledou.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_09: Um, and really, really get get us going on the right, right path.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and I, you know, I I love uh how you extended talked about extending that drill and turning it into something else.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_04: I would just extend that even further.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_04: Don't forget to have fun.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah, okay.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_04: It's the beginning of the season.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_04: I know everybody's excited, I know everybody wants to get going.
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_04: Here we are talking about team identity and conquering the league we're in and how many wins we're gonna get.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_04: Don't forget to have fun along the way.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_04: Somewhere Bob Mancini's ears are burning because he is USA's hockey's uh ambassador of fun.
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_04: And so uh find a way to make your practices interesting.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_04: I I am challenging both of us.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_04: You uh said it a couple weeks ago on multi-puck, yeah.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_04: And I started thinking about it, and I'm like, that's brilliant.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_04: Multipuck play with more pucks.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_04: We should throw like four pucks on the ice and then come up with a drill.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_04: Uh, that sounds like fun to me.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_04: I think the kids would enjoy it too.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_04: And if you really drill draw it out, uh, a good multi puck multi-puck uh practice uh plan that's out there, uh, that might be something that we can implement.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_04: So for a future episode, for sure, I'm gonna find something uh that we can do because that to me sounds like fun.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_04: So don't forget to have fun out there with your teams.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_04: I know you're planning right uh hockey season's right around the corner.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_04: Make sure the kids are having fun.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_09: Well, and that's a great segue because we are about to have a lot of fun.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_09: Um it's uh a little bit of a tease for our next week's episode.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_09: But if you are uh if you're under the age of 30, I would say, and you follow Instagram or TikTok and you're a hockey player, you might know the folks who we're gonna have on next week.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_09: Um their their group starts with the word the and ends with the word guys, and what we do is right in between.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_09: So we're gonna have some of the guys from the hockey guys on.
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_09: Um, and we're super excited because these are these are young, young uh adults, guys who are recently out of college, young men who are taking the sport we love and taking it up a notch, I think is the best way to put it.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_09: Yeah, and so we're gonna have the folks, some of the guys from the hockey guys on the show next week.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_09: You're not gonna want to miss it.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_09: We're also gonna have a huge sponsorship uh announcement uh to share, which is not just gonna be for the kids and the coaches, but parents.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_09: Oh, yeah.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_09: Think of those, think of those hockey tournament trips after a long night in the lobby and you got to get up at 6 a.m.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_09: We may have you covered.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_09: So this is a good one for mom and dad.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_09: Absolutely a good one for mom and dad.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_09: But um, congratulations on your first W from Trivia.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_04: Uh I love it.

- 1:04:46SPEAKER_04: I also love uh hearing about uh Padell's absolutely uh there's a future uh stupid hockey tricks uh Padels.

- 1:05:22SPEAKER_09: And again, thanks to Pedell and Pickle and Ryan for coming on.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_09: Grant, play the song.
