- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:08We hope that this podcast will help you to know Christ, grow in
- 0:11his word, and show his love to others.
- 0:14Let's dive right in. Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:16Today we are in James one and verses 26 and 27.
- 0:20James 1 verses 26 and 27. We are at these verses kind of
- 0:26getting into a slightly different portion of the letter
- 0:30from James, probably the first, you know, 25 verses or so.
- 0:35It's really helpful. It's really encouraging.
- 0:38It's saying, hey, here's here's how to find joy in your trials.
- 0:43Here's how to find wisdom from God.
- 0:47Here's how to think about being rich and being poor.
- 0:50Here's how you can, you know, think about God's like goodness
- 0:56and his love and his blessings in your life.
- 0:58And here's how to deal with anger.
- 1:01And here's, you know, how to adopt the word of God into your
- 1:05life and, and have it make a difference and accomplish
- 1:08everything that God wants it to. And then we get to verses 26,
- 1:13James 126 through probably chapter 5 and verse #6 and James
- 1:25kind of gets a little bit of a, a, a fire in his bones.
- 1:29And I think you'll see a little bit of this today.
- 1:32And we're going to see it in earnest then over the next, I
- 1:36think it's like 6 or 7 episodes that we're going through that
- 1:40there is just a passion in James Hart for what we went over last
- 1:47episode. And be a doer of the word.
- 1:50Don't just be a hearer of the word that in a bunch of
- 1:54different situations there were people within these communities
- 1:59of Christians, within these churches all across the Roman
- 2:02Empire, primarily made-up of Christians that had been
- 2:07scattered out from Israel as a result of persecution.
- 2:12And they were all over the place.
- 2:13But as they were going to these different areas of the Roman
- 2:17Empire, there were religious rich able to teach individuals
- 2:28that came to power in the churches that they were put in
- 2:32positions of leadership and prominence that should not have
- 2:37been they they did not know and love Jesus in any sort of
- 2:42meaningful way. And and probably even more so
- 2:46than than that. I'll, I'll say they were like
- 2:49the, the teachers in first John. So if you guys remember when we
- 2:53went through that book together, the, the leaders in first John,
- 2:58they blew in, blew up and blew out.
- 3:02And right here in James one is kind of in the the blowing up
- 3:06portion. So This is why it's kind of nice
- 3:09that James is very close to 1st John in Scripture that you can
- 3:13see a little bit of what John would have been writing about to
- 3:18some of his people. That would be decades after
- 3:21James is writing this, but the same type of thing and it's the
- 3:24same type of thing that we encounter in churches today.
- 3:26So let me read verses 26 and 27 and and we'll analyze this first
- 3:32portion of when James begins to have this fire.
- 3:36And it's this. Your religion is not meant to
- 3:41help just you. Your religion is not meant to
- 3:44just help you. So verses 26 and 27, if anyone
- 3:48thinks he is religious without controlling his tongue, his
- 3:53religion is useless and he deceives himself pure and
- 3:59undefiled. Religion before God the Father
- 4:02is this to look after orphans and widows in their distress and
- 4:07to keep oneself unstained from the world.
- 4:12All right, so there's kind of two, probably 3 main aspects
- 4:16that we're going to look at today in this truth.
- 4:18Your religion is not meant to just help you.
- 4:22He says if anyone thinks he is religious without controlling
- 4:27his tongue so a person can say, Oh yeah, I, I love God.
- 4:31I'm, I'm very religious, you know, I, I, you know, I read the
- 4:34Bible and I care very much about religion.
- 4:38If someone asks you know how what religion are you, they say,
- 4:41oh, I'm a Christian or they might say, you know, I'm a
- 4:44Baptist or I'm a this or that. But a person that is religious
- 4:50without this initial action, we're going to see this at
- 4:54length in chapter 3 says if anyone thinks he is religious
- 4:58without controlling his tongue, his religion is useless and he
- 5:05deceives himself. This word to control one's
- 5:08tongue, it's it's to bridle, it's to hold in check.
- 5:11It's like for a horse that you guide them, you you put the the
- 5:17bit in their mouth and then by pulling on the bridle One
- 5:22Direction or another, you can get the horse to like turn his
- 5:25head. And he says this.
- 5:27If your tongue does whatever it wants and you aren't telling
- 5:32your tongue what to do. Your religion he describes as
- 5:38useless. It's idle, it's empty, it's
- 5:43powerless, it lacks truth. And it says that he deceives
- 5:49himself. He's misleading himself when he
- 5:53thinks I'm a religious person, but I say whatever I want to
- 5:58say, James says. Your religion is useless, and
- 6:05you've tricked yourself into thinking that your religiosity
- 6:10benefits you or others in some way.
- 6:12Now here's what's important about this.
- 6:14Our controlling of our tongues is not inherently like just a
- 6:20for us thing. Your tongue by its very nature
- 6:26means that it is saying things to other people that might be in
- 6:31your teaching that a person can teach things that are wrong
- 6:36about the Bible, about the faith, about Jesus.
- 6:41And so in that instance, we have to control our tongue that we
- 6:44would only say the things that are true about Jesus or
- 6:48Scripture or, you know, that that end of things.
- 6:54Far too many people just echo or parrot something that perhaps a
- 7:02well known preacher says or, you know, pithy statements that
- 7:06they'll just repeat, even if it's not true.
- 7:10And I want to encourage you, don't just say something,
- 7:13especially when it comes to matters of religion.
- 7:15Don't just say something because someone else said it.
- 7:18Like look into it personally and study it.
- 7:21I can't tell you how many times, especially over the last, like,
- 7:25I don't know, year or so as a pastor that all all here, a
- 7:28brother or sister say something that I know like they didn't
- 7:31come up with it themselves. Like they're just saying what
- 7:33someone else said. And immediately in my spare, I'm
- 7:36like, oh, well, that that's not accurate, that's not true.
- 7:39Here's like this verse and this thing and that that would all
- 7:42say something contrary to what this person has said.
- 7:47So I, I think we ought to be careful in that sense about,
- 7:49let's say things that are true and not things that are false.
- 7:51But that's not primarily what James has in mind here, as we'll
- 7:55see in chapter 3. Hear what James is what he has
- 8:00at his heart is to control your tongue is that you would not
- 8:06slander, gossip or harm other people through your words.
- 8:12This is this is what he's talking about elsewhere in
- 8:16Scripture in Ephesians 5, we would read Paul talking about
- 8:20like vulgarities and you know, foolish talking, inappropriate
- 8:26jokes. That kind of thing shouldn't
- 8:28have a a place in a Christian's mouth and and we know that.
- 8:33But here in the letter of James, James is much more concerned
- 8:38about how do you treat other people with your words.
- 8:42Do you speak kindly about them? Do you speak assuming the best
- 8:48about others? Do you tear others down?
- 8:52Do you make fun of them and deride them?
- 8:57Do you talk as though you wish other people were just gone and
- 9:03and we're not a part of your family or your friend group or
- 9:06your church or your job? That kind of speech has no place
- 9:13in a Christian's life. And James tells us why.
- 9:17He says, because then your religion is useless when people
- 9:23hear and again, I keep referencing chapter 3 it it's a
- 9:27great portion of scripture. So let's do it all right now
- 9:30James says this in chapter 3 with your mouth, you bless God
- 9:35and you talk about the Lord and you share Jesus with your
- 9:38friends and family and neighbors and you, you know, declare the
- 9:42truth of God to other believers. But if that mouth that you're
- 9:46doing all of that with also holds in it your slander and
- 9:52gossip and unkindness and rudeness and tearing down and
- 9:56anger and all of that and and complaining and arguing, people
- 10:02will not listen to the good when they hear so much bad coming out
- 10:07of your mouth. And so James says, don't let
- 10:10your religion be useless. Let it be useful.
- 10:13So bridal control your tongue. Tell your mouth what you are
- 10:19going to say and what you're not going to say.
- 10:22And in those moments where you screw up and you say something
- 10:25that you shouldn't have enough character to, as soon as
- 10:29possible tell the people involved, hey, I messed up.
- 10:33I shouldn't have said that. That wasn't kind.
- 10:35I haven't brought this or this to that person's attention and
- 10:39I'm not, you know, enlisting your help to know how to better
- 10:43deal in the situation and, you know, reconcile this friendship
- 10:47or whatever. I'm just like talking so that
- 10:50you guys can be mad at this person with me.
- 10:52That that's not good. That that you would then go back
- 10:57to those people and say, hey, I shouldn't have said that to you
- 10:59guys. I shouldn't have brought that
- 11:00up. That's a thing between me and
- 11:02that person. I shouldn't have roped you guys
- 11:04into it. That we, we would make it
- 11:07important to us that we would only say what God wants us to
- 11:11say. And when we do step outside of
- 11:13that, that as soon as possible, we ask for forgiveness.
- 11:16We own our mistakes and we go, hey, shouldn't have done that.
- 11:19That wasn't right. And when we do that, when we
- 11:23control our tongue, then our religion, our devotion to God,
- 11:27it is useful. And instead of tricking
- 11:30ourselves, instead we are thinking rightly about our life.
- 11:34So that's verse 26. Your religion is not meant to
- 11:37just help yourself. It's meant to speak life and
- 11:41encouragement and God's word into other people.
- 11:44That's verse 26, Verse 27, pure and undefiled religion before
- 11:50God the Father is this. He says, here's the difference
- 11:53between what some of these people in these churches have
- 11:57been doing and what real devotion to God looks like.
- 12:02He says to look after orphans and widows in their distress and
- 12:07to keep oneself unstained from the world.
- 12:11Look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep
- 12:14oneself unstained from the world.
- 12:18First, to look after orphans and widows.
- 12:22All right, what are we, what are we to take from this?
- 12:24How do we understand this, especially as we look tomorrow
- 12:28at James 2? A lot of what the people were
- 12:31doing was they were, if you will, courting the rich in their
- 12:37areas or according the the rich Jewish individuals that may or
- 12:42may not have been believers in Jesus as the Messiah.
- 12:46And they were doing everything in order to make the rich feel
- 12:52comfortable and cared for. And James says that's not what
- 12:56God has for you. God wants for your life that you
- 13:00would care for those that can do nothing for you.
- 13:04Now I do want to mention this. This is not saying Contra what
- 13:11some people that deny scripture, deny Jesus as savior, all that
- 13:17kind of stuff. They've tried to look at this
- 13:19verse and say, OK, the church should only exist to be a like
- 13:26community Piggy Bank. And so, you know, if you have
- 13:31some financial need, just call up a church and be like, Hey,
- 13:35you know, I need 2500 bucks, you know, for my, for my rent this
- 13:40month. Would you pay my rent?
- 13:42Or, hey, you know, I need you to give me 500 bucks for utilities
- 13:47for this or that. Or, hey, you know, I, you know,
- 13:51I wasted all my money and, and now I just need some, some gifts
- 13:57for, you know, a birthday or for Christmas or for Saint Patrick's
- 14:01Day or whatever. And that often is how people in
- 14:04the community see churches and they'll they'll just treat it
- 14:09like, OK, if I don't have money, I know churches have lots of
- 14:13money. And so I'm just going to go
- 14:15there for that. That is not the point of this
- 14:19passage. The point of the passage is not
- 14:21give away tons of stuff to people.
- 14:24And that's pure and undefiled religion.
- 14:27No hear what James is advocating for is this.
- 14:30There are people that have a love for God.
- 14:36We would read this even in first Timothy 5.
- 14:38There are people that have a love for God that are your
- 14:42brothers and sisters in the Lord, but they are not going to
- 14:47be the ones that benefit you the most.
- 14:51These, you know, there's some pastors nowadays that in a
- 14:55worthy way of saying like, hey, care for don't just care for the
- 15:00poor, like care for the rich in your church.
- 15:02And you know, for your 10% of biggest givers, you should make
- 15:06sure you do, you know, a meal or something for them and like
- 15:08thank them for their giving and encourage them to continue
- 15:11giving so that way you can continue to be a light in your
- 15:14community. That's that's all fine.
- 15:16And well, you know, don't, don't only care for the poor and not
- 15:21care for the rich. Don't show favoritism in that
- 15:24way. But for some people, the
- 15:27temptation is they're just kind of down and out and that's all
- 15:31they'll ever be. God wants you to care for those
- 15:35that do not have a father or a mother.
- 15:37God wants you to be that in their life.
- 15:40Don't just throw money or food or clothing at them.
- 15:44They need someone that will love them and walk with them through
- 15:50their life. And this is not something that
- 15:52you just pass off on to some other person to say, OK, you
- 15:57know, you 5 people, you give them lots of stuff and and then
- 16:03I can feel good in my, you know, spirituality.
- 16:06No, no, no personally, if you will adopt, that might sometimes
- 16:11be literal, other times figuratively.
- 16:14Adopt someone that is in need and care for them with the means
- 16:20that God has provided you. Care for them by inviting them
- 16:25over to your house. Care for them by consistently,
- 16:29you know, like sitting with them in in church.
- 16:33There are people that God has definitely equipped to be able
- 16:37to do this like all the time in a full time way.
- 16:40I can think even of some pastors in in my local area that have
- 16:45done both actual, not not actual adoption, but they've done both
- 16:49foster care and full adoption of, of children.
- 16:53And God has really blessed them in those ways.
- 16:57And they have had a pure and non defiled religion before God the
- 17:01Father by looking after these, these orphans, these ones that
- 17:06need not just stuff, they need parental figures.
- 17:13And for you, you might not be able to have someone in your
- 17:16house 24/7, but maybe as you come to a church service on a
- 17:21Sunday morning and you'd look around and you'd recognize, OK,
- 17:26maybe this person comes with their grandma or this person
- 17:29comes, they just kind of walk in from the neighborhood.
- 17:32They need someone who will love them, who will have a
- 17:35relationship with them, who will know their name, who will, you
- 17:40know, perhaps throughout the week, keep up with them that you
- 17:45are asking about, Hey, how can I, how can I pray for you?
- 17:48What kind of things can I do for you?
- 17:50It's relational. It's not programmatic.
- 17:55That you are seeking to love one person.
- 18:00How you wish that you could love all of the orphans or all of
- 18:04those that were in need, that you would love one person at a
- 18:07time in the way that God enables you to.
- 18:11When we do that, when we have personal love and care, personal
- 18:15kind of, if you will, adoption, God is glorified and that person
- 18:21feels the love of God because they are experienced.
- 18:25They are experiencing it through your words and texts and
- 18:28actions. And then I'll, I'll, I got a
- 18:32hasten on here. Same thing with widows that you
- 18:35would treat a widow in your church, in your congregation as
- 18:43if it was your mother. I know we've got several widows
- 18:47in our church and many of them sit on the same Rd. together and
- 18:51I love every Sunday getting to see them and and I pray for them
- 18:55when some of them maybe are sick and and they're not able to be
- 18:58there. But care for widows in your
- 19:01church as if it was your mother and if you will adopt them that
- 19:07now they're, you know, you're their kid and you are caring for
- 19:10them in that way and that love that is shown through that
- 19:14relationship that shows the life of Jesus.
- 19:18So look after orphans and widows in their distress that you would
- 19:23have a loving relationship with them and you would care for one
- 19:27how you wish you could care for all.
- 19:29And then the verse 27 ends, pure and undefiled religion before
- 19:33God the Father. Is this to keep oneself
- 19:36unstained from the world that you are not pursuing the lust of
- 19:41the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life as we read
- 19:44about in first John 2, but instead you are pursuing a
- 19:48relationship with God that you are not going to be blighted
- 19:51with. You're not going to be blighted
- 19:54with covetousness, with greed. That's not going to define you.
- 19:57You're not going to be blighted with.
- 20:00Sexual immorality or adultery or pornography, none of that is
- 20:05going to have a hold on you. You are not going to be one that
- 20:08is seeking power or position over other people.
- 20:12Instead you're saying I'm just here to serve.
- 20:15I'm just here to love and I'm going to be generous.
- 20:17I'm not going to be greedy and I'm going to be holy.
- 20:22I'm not going to pursue like idolatry.
- 20:24I'm not going to pursue a worship of other things.
- 20:26I'm going to pursue God and I am not going to be defined by what
- 20:32this world is defined by. Instead, I'm going to be be
- 20:34defined by heaven. So your religion is not meant to
- 20:38just help you. You are meant to help others
- 20:41through your words. You are meant to help those who
- 20:45can't really benefit you. You're to look after, to love,
- 20:49to care for orphans and widows as if they belonged to you.
- 20:54And you are not to be defined by this world and by this world
- 20:57sins. Instead, you're to be defined by
- 21:00your Savior. I hope that'd be a challenge to
- 21:03you today. Even as we've been going through
- 21:05this, I've been encouraged to in particular, just for me in my
- 21:09life, I want to be looking after some people in our church that
- 21:14that might need someone that would love them in some ways and
- 21:20care for them, care for their souls, care for, you know, some,
- 21:25some needs that they might have. Because God always has needy
- 21:30people that we can be a blessing to.
- 21:32And if we look for it, we can exercise devotion to God that is
- 21:37meaningful both to ourselves and to those around us.
- 21:40Thanks for tuning in. Hope you have a great day.
