- 1:28perhaps another snack or something else and get
- 1:31yourself comfortable.
- 1:32All right, guys, let's kick this show off.
- 1:34You are tuned into Inspirations for Your Life.
- 1:37It's the daily motivational show where I don't
- 1:40just talk about change, I build it one
- 1:43intentional action at a time.
- 1:44I'm your host, by the way, John C.
- 1:46Morley, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer,
- 1:50podcast host, coach, graduate student, and a passionate
- 1:53lifelong learner.
- 1:55I think sometimes we don't realize where we're
- 2:01going or what we're doing.
- 2:04I think sometimes that can happen for a
- 2:07lot of people and it gets people stuck,
- 2:12right?
- 2:15So when we think about this, a lot
- 2:19of times people be like, oh my gosh,
- 2:21how do I do this?
- 2:22How do I not do this?
- 2:24And I think it comes down to some
- 2:26questions of what I do, what I say,
- 2:31right?
- 2:33And that's important, right?
- 2:36Or less.
- 2:38Because if you don't understand these things, then
- 2:40what can happen, ladies and gentlemen, you can
- 2:43actually cause yourself to get into this, well,
- 2:46you can get yourself into this state where
- 2:48you basically get frustrated.
- 2:51And nobody really wants to get frustrated, but
- 2:54it happens because maybe you're not going the
- 2:57direction you want to go right now or
- 2:59something like that.
- 3:01So that is really the most important thing
- 3:05that I can say to all of you
- 3:06guys, because I know a lot of you
- 3:09want to be successful.
- 3:10I know a lot of you get, how
- 3:12can I say, you get a little bit
- 3:14frustrated because you're not where you want to
- 3:16be right now.
- 3:17But that does not mean you should give
- 3:19up, guys.
- 3:20Absolutely not.
- 3:21It does not mean you should give up.
- 3:23So I think that's important to understand.
- 3:26And we have to keep on this journey.
- 3:29And a lot of people say to me,
- 3:31John, what is the journey?
- 3:34And maybe you're saying to me, John, I
- 3:36get it.
- 3:36But then again, I don't get it, right?
- 3:38And so by the way, you're tuned into
- 3:40the Inspirations for Your Life show.
- 3:42We're the Daily Motivational Show.
- 3:44And I'm all about turning confusion into clarity,
- 3:48division into direction, and delay into forward momentum.
- 3:51I'm your host, as I said.
- 3:53And it is a privilege to be with
- 3:55all of you and to mentor all of
- 3:56you here.
- 3:58This week's master topic is a very good
- 4:01one.
- 4:02And it is In From the Darkness to
- 4:04Light, Turning Confusion, Division, and Delay into Momentum.
- 4:08By the way, this is series five.
- 4:11That means we're on the air, our fifth
- 4:12year.
- 4:14This is show number five.
- 4:16And yes, guys, it is episode number one.
- 4:19So a lot of great stuff here coming
- 4:22for you guys as we're diving things up
- 4:26in the real world.
- 4:27And this sounds like science, doesn't it?
- 4:30Or science fiction, tiny ocean robots deliberately make
- 4:35changes.
- 4:36But how do we make changes in our
- 4:37life?
- 4:38I think these are the things that a
- 4:40lot of people, you know, I just think
- 4:42people just don't get, you know, what this
- 4:47stuff means.
- 4:48And so what I want to say to
- 4:50you is that it's about who we are
- 4:55in life, okay?
- 4:57What we're doing in life each day.
- 5:00And so when we think more about this
- 5:02concept, when we think about how people are
- 5:05in life, and we think about, you know,
- 5:08where somebody is today, or maybe where they
- 5:11are tomorrow.
- 5:12And so I know it can get frustrating,
- 5:15because you're like, hey, John, I tried to
- 5:17do this, I tried to do that, right?
- 5:18So when I talk about darkness to light,
- 5:21because that's what this whole week is about.
- 5:23A lot of times we see things as
- 5:24a darkness, you know, and we don't realize
- 5:27that there is a light at the end
- 5:29of the tunnel.
- 5:30Once we start to know and believe there's
- 5:32a light at the end of the tunnel,
- 5:33it doesn't seem like we're in darkness very
- 5:37long.
- 5:38It doesn't even seem like we're in darkness
- 5:39at all, because we're actually starting to realize
- 5:43or have that what I'll call that epiphany
- 5:45moment, right?
- 5:46That epiphany moment.
- 5:48The one where like, oh, yeah, I get
- 5:50it.
- 5:50Now I know what you're talking about.
- 5:52Now I know what you're doing.
- 5:54That's very important.
- 5:56And so that's an important thing for a
- 6:01lot of us to realize or to understand,
- 6:04is that where we are right now is
- 6:09something that many people just don't get.
- 6:14You know, you start one way, and then
- 6:17you come back and it's like, oh, my
- 6:18gosh, what am I supposed to do, right,
- 6:20what?
- 6:21And the what comes out because, like I
- 6:23said, you get frustrated.
- 6:24So we think about darkness, darkness and light
- 6:28and those kind of things.
- 6:30I think what happens is we just kind
- 6:32of go on this epiphany moment, an epiphany
- 6:37moment.
- 6:38So thinking about that epiphany moment and things
- 6:42like your point of view, right, things like
- 6:46knowing that we've all walked in darkness before,
- 6:50right?
- 6:52And so what I want to say to
- 6:54you is that when you walk in darkness,
- 6:56you actually get in light eventually, but it
- 7:00doesn't happen overnight and people get frustrated.
- 7:05I get this every day.
- 7:07I know that sometimes you do something like,
- 7:08oh, my gosh, like, I don't know what
- 7:09I'm supposed to do.
- 7:10I don't know where I'm supposed to be.
- 7:12I don't know how I'm supposed to do
- 7:13it.
- 7:14All I know is I'm getting extremely frustrated.
- 7:16And so when you get frustrated about something,
- 7:19it's like, oh, my gosh, like, what do
- 7:21you do?
- 7:22And I think that comes down to a
- 7:24big challenge.
- 7:29And the challenge is this.
- 7:32It's our perspective.
- 7:33It's how we look at something in our
- 7:35lives.
- 7:37That's right, guys, how we look at something
- 7:38in our lives.
- 7:39And that's something I think that is very,
- 7:42very important to understand.
- 7:46Perspectives, right?
- 7:49Perspectives, think of perspectives like a piece of
- 7:54fruit, right?
- 7:55There's many parts to a piece of fruit.
- 7:59You might say there's just a few sides,
- 8:00but really there's a lot to the composition
- 8:03of an apple or a piece of fruit
- 8:05because you got one layer, you got another
- 8:08layer.
- 8:08There are many different layers and many different
- 8:11ways for combinations.
- 8:12There's billions of them if you think about
- 8:14how many there could be on a piece
- 8:16of fruit.
- 8:18And so when we think about this and
- 8:19we think about where we are in life
- 8:21at the moment, it's like, oh, my gosh,
- 8:23like, where am I supposed to go?
- 8:25What am I supposed to do?
- 8:27And the what comes out to be like,
- 8:30I don't know.
- 8:32It comes out to say to me, John,
- 8:33I know that I want to do this,
- 8:35but for some reason I just don't feel
- 8:37qualified.
- 8:39Well, that's a feeling, guys.
- 8:41If you don't feel qualified, how can you
- 8:43ever move past something, right?
- 8:45How can you ever move past something if
- 8:48you're not feeling qualified?
- 8:50A lot of this is the feel, right?
- 8:53And if we can't feel something, how do
- 8:56we move on?
- 8:57But we don't.
- 8:59We stay stuck in that pattern that we're
- 9:02in right now.
- 9:02We stay stuck in that pattern.
- 9:04And that pattern is something, guys, that I
- 9:06feel a lot of us just want to
- 9:10sometimes get rid of.
- 9:12We don't want to be in that pattern
- 9:14anymore.
- 9:15And it's nothing to be scared about.
- 9:17It's just that we need to understand why
- 9:21we are not going forward.
- 9:23And it's not the reason you think, guys.
- 9:25It's not the reason you think.
- 9:28It's having to do with our mindset.
- 9:31And our mindset is actually, well, running the
- 9:36program, running the software that controls our hardware,
- 9:39which is our body.
- 9:40You might say, John, well, that's crazy.
- 9:42Well, if you think it's crazy, think about
- 9:45where you are right now, OK?
- 9:48Think about all the thoughts that you've had
- 9:50recently, OK?
- 9:53Better yet, tomorrow or later today, take a
- 9:57piece of paper or take a journal and
- 10:00start writing down when you notice you're saying
- 10:06everything, good or bad.
- 10:07And now when you get that, you're like,
- 10:09oh, wait a minute.
- 10:10I really do have negative self-talk going
- 10:15on.
- 10:16When people deny it so strongly, I can
- 10:20almost pinpoint and say, yes, you've got negative
- 10:21self-talk.
- 10:22I mean, it's like without a doubt that
- 10:25you've got negative self-talk.
- 10:27And that's a very, very important thing.
- 10:32And I think we have to embrace this
- 10:34as people, people because negative self-talk happens.
- 10:41I'll tell you why.
- 10:43It happens because of a state we're in.
- 10:46Now, a wise person once shared with me
- 10:49in my NLP training is that the map,
- 10:54ladies and gentlemen, is not the territory, huh?
- 10:59So the map, what we think something represents
- 11:03is not really what it represents.
- 11:07All right, John, you're really losing me, OK?
- 11:10I'll try to make this easy.
- 11:12So let's say, for example, you're having a
- 11:15challenge with something in your life.
- 11:16Doesn't matter what it is.
- 11:17Could be a relationship, could be money, whatever.
- 11:19I want you to think about where that
- 11:22challenge resides in your body.
- 11:24Is it in your heart?
- 11:25Where do you feel the sensation when you
- 11:28think about it, OK?
- 11:29Now that you've located, it could be your
- 11:31arm, could be your head, could be your
- 11:33leg, anywhere.
- 11:33Where do you feel it?
- 11:34Usually in your chest or something.
- 11:36And what color can you assign to that?
- 11:41Can you get a smell from it?
- 11:43Can you get a size?
- 11:44What shape is that color?
- 11:50Is that color the same size right now?
- 11:53Has it gotten any smaller from when we
- 11:55started?
- 11:57Or is it something you can't quite put
- 12:03your finger on?
- 12:04And I say that because it means we're
- 12:07not tuned into our bodies enough.
- 12:10When we tune into our bodies, there is
- 12:13so much endless potential.
- 12:16But a lot of us say, oh, you
- 12:17know what?
- 12:17I'm not going to do that.
- 12:18I'm not going to do that.
- 12:19Fine, don't do that, OK?
- 12:21But when you don't do something, you change
- 12:25who you are.
- 12:27You change a perception.
- 12:29You change a belief in your life.
- 12:33And I think that's something that a lot
- 12:35of people, for whatever reason, just don't understand
- 12:38why that is.
- 12:41But it's truth.
- 12:43And truth happens because of things in our
- 12:49life.
- 12:50You may not agree with something.
- 12:53I've always said to people, it's OK to
- 12:56agree to disagree.
- 12:58And that's one of the most respectable ways
- 13:00that you can actually decide to have a
- 13:07polite disagreeing with someone is to agree to
- 13:09disagree.
- 13:10You're like, OK, I'm going to agree to
- 13:12disagree.
- 13:13And I'm like, huh?
- 13:14So what that really means is I hear
- 13:18what you're saying, all right?
- 13:19I understand what you're saying, and I respect
- 13:22it.
- 13:23And also, I don't believe that.
- 13:27I don't agree with that on my end.
- 13:29But I respect the fact that you think
- 13:32that's the way it is.
- 13:34And it's OK.
- 13:35Everyone's entitled to have their own opinions, their
- 13:39own comments, and in addition to comments, their
- 13:48own way of being.
- 13:52And you may be saying to me, John,
- 13:54being?
- 13:54I'm lost.
- 13:56All right, everyone in the world is here,
- 13:59right?
- 14:01We see, we hear, we touch, we taste,
- 14:06right?
- 14:09And we're all grateful for those gifts that
- 14:12we have, because some people can't do those
- 14:13things.
- 14:17If you were to just take your hand
- 14:18for a moment.
- 14:19Now, if you're driving, don't do this.
- 14:22Can you right now, if I tell you
- 14:24to focus on your hand, can you feel
- 14:26the sensation of maybe the blood going through
- 14:31your hand?
- 14:32Can you feel that?
- 14:33If you focus on it, I can even
- 14:36feel it in my thumb.
- 14:38I can concentrate.
- 14:39Without even looking, I just can concentrate, holding
- 14:41my hand just like this.
- 14:43I can feel the blood going up and
- 14:45down my fingers.
- 14:46I can feel it, how it's traveling.
- 14:49And that's wild, right?
- 14:52What if I take my other hand?
- 14:53I do the same thing.
- 14:54I'll put that hand down, hands up.
- 14:57And I can feel the flow.
- 14:59Now, if I focus, maybe I'll focus more
- 15:01on my elbow.
- 15:03Let me focus on my elbow, OK?
- 15:06I can actually feel the sensation of the
- 15:09blood in my elbow.
- 15:11Let's now take the back of our neck,
- 15:13all right?
- 15:13Take the back of our neck.
- 15:14Again, if you're driving, don't do this.
- 15:17And I can feel the sensation of blood
- 15:20moving through my neck.
- 15:24That's wild, guys.
- 15:25So that tells me something.
- 15:28It tells me that our body gives us
- 15:31a lot of feedback, but we just do
- 15:33not pay attention to this feedback.
- 15:36Why?
- 15:38Well, I'll tell you why.
- 15:41That big capital word, capital E, capital G,
- 15:44capital O, ego.
- 15:47Yes, we need to let go of the
- 15:49ego.
- 15:49I always say to people, we need to
- 15:51have the ego stopped at the door.
- 15:55See, people think their ego is all there
- 15:58is.
- 16:00But ego is all they've learned.
- 16:04Ego does not allow you to interact with
- 16:06other people.
- 16:07Egos don't allow you to move ahead.
- 16:13Egos cause you to stay stuck.
- 16:18That's right, guys, to stay stuck.
- 16:21And I think that's a big challenge for
- 16:23a lot of people.
- 16:24It's like, well, they don't want to be
- 16:25stuck, right?
- 16:26But they are stuck.
- 16:29They're stuck.
- 16:32And the hardest thing about being stuck is
- 16:36not knowing how to get unstuck.
- 16:40I said before, if you're not part of
- 16:42the solution, you're part of the problem.
- 16:44You might say, well, John, I have nothing
- 16:45to do with that.
- 16:47Exactly.
- 16:48But the moment you start thinking of that
- 16:53issue and you can't be a solution, then
- 16:57you are part of the problem.
- 17:01I know that's wild.
- 17:04Think about this for a moment.
- 17:06Now, I'm not going to turn the lights
- 17:07off here, obviously, being in the studio.
- 17:09But if you turn the lights off, again,
- 17:11not while you're driving, you're going to notice
- 17:13that maybe the atmosphere is different.
- 17:17Maybe your sound resonates differently to your ears.
- 17:24Maybe the way your eyes and your pupils
- 17:27are dilated are different because it's dark.
- 17:29They're going to open up more.
- 17:33So we think about darkness to light.
- 17:35A lot of us think about a tunnel,
- 17:36right?
- 17:37There's a light at the end of the
- 17:39tunnel.
- 17:40So if we start at a tunnel, and
- 17:42the tunnel is very dark, and if we
- 17:46look and we see it's dark, but maybe
- 17:48if we focus, we can just see a
- 17:50very tiny minuscule light.
- 17:52Now, if it's a long tunnel, we're not
- 17:53going to see that light for a while.
- 17:55But the belief that we're going to have
- 17:57a light at the end of the tunnel
- 17:58is what keeps us in our momentum to
- 18:03keep walking, driving, or pushing forward.
- 18:09Darkness can become light, like that.
- 18:15And light can become darkness, like that.
- 18:19A subtle shift in our perception, a subtle
- 18:24shift in our perception will actually alter our
- 18:27reality.
- 18:32That's a huge, huge thing, guys.
- 18:37I mean, it's very, very, very huge.
- 18:41If you think about perceptions, let's do this
- 18:45for a moment.
- 18:46Maybe you've gone to a store recently, right?
- 18:49And maybe there were some things on display
- 18:51that you really liked because of your perceptions
- 18:54and things like that.
- 18:55Maybe there's other things you're like, oh, I
- 18:57wouldn't be caught whatever buying that, right?
- 19:01Your perception.
- 19:06Now, let's say somebody was there, maybe it
- 19:09was a celebrity, and they were like, oh,
- 19:10this is the greatest thing, and they're using
- 19:13it, and you're seeing them do all this.
- 19:14You're like, oh, I got to have one
- 19:15of those.
- 19:17But you just said before that you couldn't
- 19:19be caught having that.
- 19:21And now you're like, well, if that person
- 19:24has it, I mean, I'm sure I can
- 19:25have it.
- 19:26You see how that subtle change affected who
- 19:31you are?
- 19:32It affected your outcome.
- 19:34It affected your actions.
- 19:37Actions are power, guys.
- 19:40Thoughts are great.
- 19:41I love thoughts.
- 19:42But thoughts without momentum are dead.
- 19:51Darkness to light.
- 19:55Darkness to light.
- 19:58That's powerful, guys.
- 20:01Walking in darkness versus walking in light.
- 20:06When you have that aha moment, it's like,
- 20:08oh, yeah, I get it.
- 20:11I get it.
- 20:16And we're going to talk more about walking
- 20:17in darkness tomorrow as well.
- 20:22But it's our perspective.
- 20:27It's our understanding.
- 20:31And our perspective can shift a complete 180
- 20:38if we pay attention to something else.
- 20:41I'm going to give you an example.
- 20:43I remember the first time I went on
- 20:44a roller coaster.
- 20:45It was actually a steel coaster at Great
- 20:48Adventure in New Jersey.
- 20:51And the ride was actually Batman.
- 20:55I remember doing all of the research and
- 20:58even meeting the engineers that actually help keep
- 21:02the ride running every day.
- 21:04They have a lot of tests they have
- 21:04to do.
- 21:05And even ride the ride.
- 21:10And if you let your mind go all
- 21:12over the place, you can really get scared.
- 21:16But if you focus on one thing, because
- 21:19getting on that ride was interesting.
- 21:22And standing up.
- 21:24And that's how this ride went.
- 21:27I believe this was a stand-up ride.
- 21:31Oh, actually, you had this.
- 21:35Actually, no.
- 21:36This was a stand-up ride.
- 21:36You were in a position.
- 21:39You were in a seat.
- 21:42But your legs were dangling when they dropped
- 21:47the floor.
- 21:50And I knew there were turns.
- 21:52There was a lot of things.
- 21:52But I said, how can I preoccupy myself
- 21:55so that I can enjoy the ride without
- 21:58stressing about different things coming up?
- 22:00And just enjoy its beauty and its grandeur.
- 22:04So I got the idea.
- 22:06There's a screw right in front of me,
- 22:08a little bolt.
- 22:11I'm going to keep my eyes focused on
- 22:13that bolt the entire time.
- 22:19And you know what happened?
- 22:20I started focusing on that bolt.
- 22:23I focused on it very lightly, nothing crazy.
- 22:27And I kept focusing on it.
- 22:29And the ride was amazing.
- 22:35I just kept my eyes focused on that
- 22:37bolt.
- 22:40And before I knew it, guys, the ride
- 22:42was over.
- 22:47Many times, people look too far.
- 22:52They look past the tunnel, when all we
- 22:55need to do is just look outside the
- 22:58tunnel.
- 22:59That's a huge thing, guys.
- 23:03If you look too far ahead, you miss
- 23:09what's going to motivate you and, let's say,
- 23:12wind you up to go further.
- 23:14If you miss that, I'll call it a
- 23:16checkpoint.
- 23:18You know what happened after I got off
- 23:19that roller coaster?
- 23:22A friend of mine said, let's go on
- 23:23another roller coaster.
- 23:24You know what we went on next?
- 23:26The Great American Scream Machine.
- 23:28It's not around anymore.
- 23:30I still remember to this day, my friend
- 23:32and I, we got on this ride.
- 23:35And you get all fastened in.
- 23:38And then you're waiting.
- 23:39And then there's the treachery of going up
- 23:43that big incline.
- 23:44And you're getting very nervous.
- 23:46And then you know there has to be
- 23:47a release.
- 23:47And there is.
- 23:48And it went into several spirals.
- 23:50And right after we came out of the
- 23:51second spiral, guess what they did?
- 23:53They took a picture.
- 23:57And it was quite funny.
- 24:00My hair was a mess, right?
- 24:02I mean, in that position where they took
- 24:03the picture.
- 24:05It was a perspective.
- 24:07But it also taught me that roller coasters
- 24:09aren't that bad.
- 24:11Roller coasters can be fun.
- 24:12So things in our life that we may
- 24:14have feared can actually be growth.
- 24:18Roller coaster was emotionally uncomfortable at first.
- 24:22But after I let go and I just
- 24:24went with it, I actually enjoyed the roller
- 24:28coaster.
- 24:28It was a tremendous feeling, big rush.
- 24:36And so now when I take any ride,
- 24:38I try to embrace and let go.
- 24:47Now, of course, there's some rides I will
- 24:48knock it on because they're just not constructed
- 24:50very well, especially some of the ones that
- 24:52these rolling temporary circus and carnivals that come
- 24:58by.
- 24:59They put the ride together with some bolts.
- 25:02But I just never trust that they're going
- 25:03to be that well.
- 25:06If we think about a perspective, as we
- 25:09talked about before from a camera or in
- 25:12the perspective of this water bottle, the perspective
- 25:17of this water bottle right now is clear.
- 25:20When I pick it up, my perception of
- 25:24it being clear is there.
- 25:26But that's not what comes front and center
- 25:30on stage.
- 25:31You know what comes front and center?
- 25:35The attribute that the water has a little
- 25:37bit of a cool feeling to it when
- 25:39I hold the bottle.
- 25:41That's very important.
- 25:45I also take note of the plastic straw.
- 25:48And then as I move the bottle around,
- 25:49I take note of how the water kind
- 25:52of warbles around it.
- 25:56When I actually take the bottle and I
- 25:58put it to my mouth, a couple things
- 26:00happen.
- 26:01I notice the sensation of the plastic where
- 26:04the water would come out of.
- 26:07And I feel sensations in my mouth and
- 26:12throat.
- 26:13But I also hear it even before it
- 26:17fully gets in my mouth.
- 26:22Those perceptions allow us to enjoy or de
- 26:26-enjoy an experience.
- 26:29But sometimes we don't enjoy something because we
- 26:32haven't taken the time to enjoy the beauty
- 26:36of the setup, right?
- 26:40You go to a play.
- 26:43And maybe you're not enjoying one of the
- 26:49acts because maybe you're not taking in the
- 26:52perception of the costumes, the tonality of the
- 26:56actors, the skill of the actors, maybe the
- 27:01dance of the actors.
- 27:02Pretty cool.
- 27:04We're going to have fun this week.
