- 0:00Are not your own, Mikayla Roman and tell us the sculpture was showing in
- 0:03front of her NYC Culture Club. Yeah. So this sculpture is titled Trustpot
- 0:09is a part of my series how Do You Limb? But when you don't
- 0:11know you're playing. I really focus on the motive aspect of the sculpt and
- 0:18what it feels like to have a body rather than just replicating what a body
- 0:22is, OK. And so I do that by manipulating form and sculpting.
- 0:28Intuited. Now you've been doing this for a while now, I'm guessing right,
- 0:31this sculpture about three four years, four years now? I think,
- 0:35yeah, I love it. I mean I sculpt with clay and really twist,
- 0:41like I think, over here you can see how the figures are moving
- 0:44back into the body. Oh I did that. The pedestal itself twists with
- 0:48the twist of the sculptures. So with this season particularly really talking about the
- 0:55union of opposing the actions and that like endless cycle OVERFLA shouldn't how it goes
- 1:00right back into the body but also continues down into the stand as well.
- 1:04So when you make these different sculptures, what what's your thought for us going
- 1:07into It feels like you have a very deep thought process going into these different
- 1:11sculptures. Yeah, well, I mean this body, I mean it's more
- 1:14so. Yes, of course I wanted to be aesthetically pleasing. It's a
- 1:18work of art, but it's more important for me to capture the right emotion
- 1:23that I'm trying to go for. So I typically start with an idea,
- 1:26start with a plan, start sculpting, and a lot. It's rare for
- 1:30it to end up looking like the way it started, and I just kind
- 1:34of if it's feeling right, go with it. And if it's if it's
- 1:38the plan's not feeling right, I almost things around, resculpt things and kind
- 1:46of with your instinct then yeah, definitely. Yeah. Tell me about the
- 1:49exhibits, like, do you do a lot of these different exhibits over the
- 1:52year or is this Yeah, I mean I'm trying to This is my first
- 1:55time showing with NC Culture Club Very Cool, which is an incredible show up
- 2:00right now. So many different artists in the town in one's space is incredible.
- 2:05I have a show up right now in Brooklyn as well. Okay,
- 2:09and I am showing in Chinatown and Longs for a short gallery in December,
- 2:15Nice I dot chick gallery at the end of the month. And now,
- 2:20do you do only sculptures or do you do art? What kind of other
- 2:23art? I started as a painter, Actually I don't typically right now I'm
- 2:28sticking a sculpture and painting my sculptures. I do drawings and paintings as well,
- 2:31but I don't really make those. Now, what's a me and be
- 2:35feature here? Because this is like right in the heart of downtown Manhattan.
- 2:37It's a good ARE exhibit. Yeah, it's so cool to be in the
- 2:40World Trade Center. Like, I've only been in New York for two years,
- 2:45so New York right, Yes, exactly. I'm Canadians, so very
- 2:51Telling family back home that I'm showing Cares is really fun to hear their real
- 2:55and have they come down to see this yet or not? The show?
- 2:58Unfortunately, I did have a good friend from homecome for opening nights, okay,
- 3:01which was great. But yeah, they fund for a few shows last
- 3:07year. So let me ask you about the community, the creative community in
- 3:09New York. I feel like it it bonds together, doesn't it It?
- 3:13Absolutely, It's honest. I think that's one of the things I love about
- 3:17New York. There's so many creatives and there's just so much support I think.
- 3:22I mean, before moving here, I didn't even realize that it was
- 3:25this big of a thing. Yeah, I know it sounds silly, but
- 3:29well, no, I feel because it's such a difference because when you connect
- 3:31with them online, they're just very open and welcoming, you know. I
- 3:35felt that the meat, like mister and Norcy's submaying all those other creatives around
- 3:38the city. So it's just filled and it's it's not filed to the extent
- 3:43that you're exhausted with it. It's just there's so much new things to look
- 3:46at and learn and like hear so many different creatives opinions. Yep, It's
- 3:53something I've never experienced before. With all the trauma we're seeing in the world
- 3:55right now, what role can artists? Can art play and maybe bringing us
- 4:00peace, maybe bringing us some column amongst this chaos right now? Yeah,
- 4:04I mean, I think art is we like, we need art in the
- 4:09world, and I think using art to talk about complex situations and our truths
- 4:15is a way to allow people to hopefully let down a guard and see the
- 4:18word for what it is, see what it's talking about. And approach and
- 4:24artwork with an open mind, the seeing way you should any conversation. And
- 4:27I think it gives a little bit of a leadway and hope for people to
- 4:31see perspectives. One last thing to it's being a perspective. From one angle,
- 4:36he looks strained. From another, he looks relaxed. Is that by
- 4:39design or yeah? Yeah, so I took opposing emotions and I was trying
- 4:43to make them work together. So one angle there you're saying, there he
- 4:48looks a little strange. From here he looks actually kind of relaxed from work
- 4:50exactly. Yeah, I'm I'm glad you could tell that. That's awesome.
- 4:54I'm happy you came through. Yeah, it's I think it's like that subtle
- 4:59uncanny aspect of the piece that And how long do you want to exhibit here?
- 5:02By the way, how long are you on display here? With This
- 5:05show was on Sunday on the So come on down the NYC Culture BBC,
