- 0:10Speaker 1: Twins Master. Cody Clements is here with us on FT. Cody,
- 0:13Speaker 1: it's great to have you on the show. How's life man,
- 0:15Speaker 1: You're really settling in nicely with the Twins. It's been
- 0:18Speaker 1: fun to watch.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for having me on. Guys, it's been great.
- 0:24Speaker 3: I mean, just getting obviously a ton of playing time
- 0:27Speaker 3: and kind of collectively as of a group, we've.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Been hitting the ball well.
- 0:32Speaker 3: And yeah, like you said, just getting it, getting some
- 0:36Speaker 3: good playing time.
- 0:37Speaker 2: I feel good at play right now.
- 0:40Speaker 4: Cody, what what what has led to this? I mean,
- 0:43Speaker 4: you know, you've kind of been a utility guy. You've
- 0:45Speaker 4: kind of been in and out of the lineup.
- 0:47Speaker 5: Guys.
- 0:47Speaker 4: It just Derek Shelton saying, Cody, you're gonna get a
- 0:50Speaker 4: shot to play every day, and you just ran with it.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:54Speaker 3: I mean the original plan was for me to just
- 0:58Speaker 3: start versus right hand and pitching. And then I've had
- 1:02Speaker 3: some at bats off lefties late in the game or
- 1:04Speaker 3: you know, late in some games where there wasn't a
- 1:07Speaker 3: pinch hit needed or anything like that, and I've had
- 1:09Speaker 3: some solid at bats and so I think that just led.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Into his decision making of letting me play versus the lefties.
- 1:17Speaker 6: But when they when they have that conversation with you,
- 1:19Speaker 6: do you kick back, do you say wait, wait wait
- 1:23Speaker 6: wait what like let me let me see some lefties.
- 1:26Speaker 7: I'm not that bad.
- 1:27Speaker 6: I've never met a hitters like I would never want
- 1:30Speaker 6: to go left on left. Here you can take the bat.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it's tough to kind of like they
- 1:38Speaker 3: always have their opinions and decisions on what they're going
- 1:42Speaker 3: to do. Right, but kind of like what you're saying,
- 1:47Speaker 3: it's weird, right, So, like I've been around the league,
- 1:49Speaker 3: bounce around.
- 1:50Speaker 2: I think this is like my fifth season being in
- 1:52Speaker 2: the big league.
- 1:53Speaker 3: So obviously been up and down the first few years
- 1:55Speaker 3: with Detroit and then with Philly, but like it's so weird.
- 2:00Speaker 3: You're coming up, like as a prospect or any guys
- 2:03Speaker 3: that are trying to build their way up to the
- 2:04Speaker 3: big leagues. You're playing every single day versyety's lefties. It
- 2:08Speaker 3: doesn't matter, it's all about the development. And then you
- 2:11Speaker 3: kind of get to the big leagues if you're not
- 2:13Speaker 3: like a young prospect guy that needs to play every
- 2:17Speaker 3: single day, you kind of fall into this pattern of
- 2:19Speaker 3: becoming a platoon bat and they're like, oh, you can't
- 2:22Speaker 3: hit lefties now like it's the weirdest thing, but that
- 2:26Speaker 3: was just like my career path, and I mean, I
- 2:29Speaker 3: wouldn't change anything, you know, I've made it to this
- 2:31Speaker 3: point and I'm grinding and just still trying to have
- 2:34Speaker 3: quality of batch for this team. And you know, luckily,
- 2:37Speaker 3: you know, Sheltons let me, you know, kind of take
- 2:40Speaker 3: take some rope here, and I've been having some good
- 2:42Speaker 3: at Pats Cody.
- 2:45Speaker 4: I know you're in Detroit. I can tell by the
- 2:47Speaker 4: paint scheme behind you and the lockers. I mean, you're
- 2:50Speaker 4: clearly in Detroit. You don't don't even have tell me.
- 2:52Speaker 4: I knew where you guys were. But also I can
- 2:53Speaker 4: tell by the paint scheme. What's your favorite position to play?
- 2:57Speaker 4: As a kind of you know, it says on the
- 2:59Speaker 4: screen utility guy. And the other day you got to
- 3:01Speaker 4: play center and Buxton didn't play. After you play center
- 3:04Speaker 4: for a little bit, do you run around and give
- 3:06Speaker 4: him the buck truck?
- 3:07Speaker 5: Okay?
- 3:07Speaker 8: Man?
- 3:08Speaker 5: I think that hard?
- 3:10Speaker 3: No, I I I mean I love playing second base.
- 3:13Speaker 3: I think that that was that's the most like natural
- 3:15Speaker 3: position for me, which I haven't really played that much
- 3:19Speaker 3: this year, but over the course of my career, I have,
- 3:22Speaker 3: But yeah, I got out in center field, and I'll
- 3:25Speaker 3: tell you what, it's a lot of running. I told Buck,
- 3:28Speaker 3: you know, I respect the hell out of center fielders,
- 3:30Speaker 3: but that level of respect is gone up here after
- 3:35Speaker 3: playing there, you know, for six games or whatever a
- 3:37Speaker 3: while he was kind of banged up.
- 3:39Speaker 7: You probably feel more athletic than when you play first.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Base though, right absolutely, yeah.
- 3:46Speaker 7: You talk.
- 3:47Speaker 6: I want to hit one more on this whole utility thing.
- 3:51Speaker 6: You see so many prospects, even to the point where
- 3:53Speaker 6: Connor Griffin, they started letting him take fly balls in
- 3:57Speaker 6: center field. Supposedly now he's going to be the it's
- 4:00Speaker 6: like elite shortstop. Do you feel like in the minor
- 4:02Speaker 6: leagues too many times what you were saying, people are
- 4:05Speaker 6: pigeonholed as like, hey, I need you to play short
- 4:09Speaker 6: then you don't have one day we're gonna play second.
- 4:12Speaker 7: And do you think that stunts.
- 4:14Speaker 6: Players development in the minor leagues or do you think
- 4:17Speaker 6: that enhances it because they become more versatile and athletic
- 4:21Speaker 6: at other positions.
- 4:23Speaker 3: I guess it just depends on like the route of
- 4:25Speaker 3: the prospector and what the organization wants to do with
- 4:28Speaker 3: that guy. You know, like if it's a you know,
- 4:31Speaker 3: first round or second round or shortstop and that's where
- 4:34Speaker 3: they project him to be, just keep him at shortstop
- 4:37Speaker 3: the whole time, you know, But if they see some
- 4:39Speaker 3: sort of route of like another prospect that is coming
- 4:42Speaker 3: up with that shortstop and he also plays shortstop, and
- 4:46Speaker 3: so they're trying to work in, you know, the kind
- 4:49Speaker 3: of route for both of these guys to come up.
- 4:51Speaker 3: All right, Well, this guy could probably play third base,
- 4:53Speaker 3: or this guy could probably play second base, or I
- 4:56Speaker 3: think that's kind of when the utility term starts to
- 4:59Speaker 3: develop for players just based off what the ORG has
- 5:03Speaker 3: to work with. Does that make sense, Like, you know,
- 5:05Speaker 3: they're trying to find spots for all these guys and
- 5:08Speaker 3: if this is the next core group coming up for
- 5:11Speaker 3: whatever ORG, they got to find a way to get
- 5:14Speaker 3: them both in the lineup all the time.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Right.
- 5:16Speaker 3: So that's where the utilities spot, I feel like, becomes
- 5:20Speaker 3: more valuable for teams, like for example, myself, like Chelte,
- 5:24Speaker 3: if somebody needs a day off in right field, like
- 5:26Speaker 3: he can just throw me out there or left field
- 5:29Speaker 3: or center field or second base, first base and depending
- 5:32Speaker 3: on you know, say these other left handed hitters in
- 5:35Speaker 3: the lineup are hitting lefties as well. You know, Okay,
- 5:37Speaker 3: let's put this guy here and put this guy here,
- 5:39Speaker 3: and then you have the I guess, the right lineup
- 5:42Speaker 3: that you want out that day.
- 5:45Speaker 6: Is there one position that's tough though, because have you
- 5:48Speaker 6: ever seen the movie Moneyball where the character that plays
- 5:51Speaker 6: Ron Washington, he says, not anybody can just play first base?
- 5:56Speaker 7: Is this true?
- 5:56Speaker 6: Because you just said, hey, you know what, they can
- 5:58Speaker 6: just throw me out and right that's a big league
- 6:01Speaker 6: position with dudes hitting big league base you.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I mean, yeah, it's definitely hard to do, right.
- 6:09Speaker 2: I mean I try.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Yeah, It's not the easiest thing in the world. I
- 6:12Speaker 3: mean I go out there and whichever spot I'm plugged
- 6:16Speaker 3: in the lineup, position wise, I go out and take
- 6:18Speaker 3: reads and right field, or reads and left field, or
- 6:21Speaker 3: take ground balls a first base or whatnot. But I
- 6:24Speaker 3: guess it's you have to find the right player that
- 6:27Speaker 3: feels comfortable doing that.
- 6:28Speaker 2: And I don't know if that's like a decent.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Amount of players that are comfortable doing that, because you know,
- 6:34Speaker 3: some people have egos and some people don't, and some
- 6:37Speaker 3: people don't want to leave shortstop, and some people, you know, whatever.
- 6:40Speaker 3: But I think like, if you come like I, I mean,
- 6:43Speaker 3: I'm not saying I'm the best athlete in the world
- 6:46Speaker 3: by any means, but like I came. When I was
- 6:49Speaker 3: in high school, I feel like everybody played shortstop for
- 6:51Speaker 3: the most part, and then you kind of develop the
- 6:53Speaker 3: way you develop.
- 6:55Speaker 2: So like I was a middle endfielder.
- 6:57Speaker 3: And then actually, when I was with Detroit, AJ Hinch
- 7:01Speaker 3: was like, do you play any other positions? And I
- 7:03Speaker 3: was like, yeah, I mean I played third base in
- 7:05Speaker 3: college and short and second. He's like, all right, we're
- 7:08Speaker 3: gonna put you at third, first in corner outfield. And
- 7:10Speaker 3: I was like, okay, great, Like this is my route
- 7:12Speaker 3: to the big leagues back in twenty twenty two.
- 7:15Speaker 2: And so that's how I made it. And then.
- 7:18Speaker 3: It kind of just I guess over the course of
- 7:20Speaker 3: three or four years, I got comfortable doing it and
- 7:24Speaker 3: it is a challenge, but I mean I enjoy it.
- 7:28Speaker 5: Cod do you mention it you played for the Tigers?
- 7:30Speaker 5: Is this the revenge series for you? Do you go
- 7:32Speaker 5: in there and.
- 7:33Speaker 4: Say, man, I played for you guys. Now I'm gonna
- 7:35Speaker 4: show you what you're missing. Look at me, Hinch.
- 7:37Speaker 3: I can hit lefties, No, I mean, I got to
- 7:42Speaker 3: play against them when I was with the Phillies, so
- 7:44Speaker 3: I guess you get your revenge.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Series the first time. After that, it's like, all right, whatever, Yeavin.
- 7:50Speaker 4: Now you're an everyday guy. Now you're an everyday guy.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Though it's different.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess.
- 7:55Speaker 8: So.
- 7:55Speaker 3: I mean, it's funny we have, you know, a bunch
- 7:57Speaker 3: of guys on this team that have been with different teams,
- 8:02Speaker 3: like Josh Bell. He's been I don't even know seven
- 8:05Speaker 3: eight teams, So it's hilarious. Taylor Rodgers will get on
- 8:08Speaker 3: the mic and say, all right, Josh Bell, JB, here
- 8:11Speaker 3: we go revenge series. It's like, seems like every road trip.
- 8:16Speaker 6: Yes, he's definitely been on all the teams. It's easier
- 8:19Speaker 6: to just pick the ones that he hasn't been on.
- 8:22Speaker 6: Talking about one of the other teammates you mentioned earlier
- 8:24Speaker 6: Byron Buxton, Obviously, trade deadline comes up. Obviously last year
- 8:29Speaker 6: he said he doesn't want to play anywhere else but Minnesota.
- 8:33Speaker 6: Can you talk about how he speaks about staying in
- 8:36Speaker 6: Minnesota or just like when you come to a new
- 8:38Speaker 6: team like this and like he's clearly the leader of
- 8:41Speaker 6: the team, how he talks about the City of Minnesota.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, Buck is a man of few words.
- 8:48Speaker 3: He really doesn't talk that much unless you talk to him,
- 8:51Speaker 3: but he leads by example and does his work every day.
- 8:55Speaker 3: To be honest with you, I've never heard him talk
- 8:57Speaker 3: about any type of like preference on the trade deadline,
- 9:01Speaker 3: or like how much he loves Minnesota and stuff like that,
- 9:06Speaker 3: other than the clips from the All Star Game and
- 9:09Speaker 3: the stuff I see on social media of when he
- 9:11Speaker 3: talks about her when he gets asked about it.
- 9:14Speaker 2: But I don't know.
- 9:15Speaker 3: I mean, I see, he seems like he's an extremely
- 9:18Speaker 3: loyal person and he always from what I've heard is
- 9:22Speaker 3: you know, Minnesota had his back, his back when he
- 9:24Speaker 3: had his injuries, and you know he really appreciated that
- 9:29Speaker 3: through his career whatnot. So I don't know, it seems like,
- 9:33Speaker 3: you know, he loves it here and he wants to stay.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Support for today's episode comes from Square, and they've got

- 10:38Speaker 4: Cody with Buckston, and you can you imagine being on
- 10:45Speaker 4: a team for one time in your career, now that
- 10:47Speaker 4: you've been on different teams and different organizations like Byron,
- 10:51Speaker 4: to have the power to say, you know what, guys,
- 10:53Speaker 4: you're talking about me being traded, but I'm just going
- 10:56Speaker 4: to stay here because I really like it. Can you
- 10:58Speaker 4: imagine even your father played a bunch of teams, right,
- 11:00Speaker 4: I played for a bunch of teams. I was never
- 11:02Speaker 4: given that opportunity. How cool is that that Buckston has
- 11:06Speaker 4: that power to see, no, I'm staying no matter.
- 11:08Speaker 5: What y else be.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it's amazing. I mean he pretty much.
- 11:13Speaker 3: I mean he bleeds Minnesota Twins. I swear like he
- 11:17Speaker 3: his family's comfortable here. I think that's a big part
- 11:19Speaker 3: of it as well. And I think it's pretty special
- 11:23Speaker 3: for a guy to be with one single team for
- 11:26Speaker 3: ten plus years. You don't ever really see that anymore.
- 11:30Speaker 3: But I don't know to my dad, Like you mentioned,
- 11:33Speaker 3: my dad, like his whole plan when he got to
- 11:37Speaker 3: the big leagues and everything. He was wanting to put
- 11:39Speaker 3: his family in a good spot. And for the first
- 11:41Speaker 3: few years it was about making money and all that,
- 11:44Speaker 3: and then as soon as he started building his career,
- 11:46Speaker 3: he was like, I want to win, and so that
- 11:49Speaker 3: was kind of his mentality over the course of his career.
- 11:53Speaker 3: But I mean, I think buck has you know, I
- 11:56Speaker 3: think he believes in the Minnesota Twins organization. He talks
- 11:59Speaker 3: about it, and I mean, I don't know. We've had
- 12:02Speaker 3: some crazy games this year. We're hitting the ball well,
- 12:05Speaker 3: I mean, the pitching's coming around, and you know, we're
- 12:09Speaker 3: just trying to keep continuing, trying to win win series.
- 12:13Speaker 5: Cody, you have one daughter, right, just one one daughter?
- 12:17Speaker 2: Yes, I have it. It's one daughter. She's four months old.
- 12:21Speaker 4: Okay, So that was my question. Do you bring her
- 12:24Speaker 4: on the family trip? I know it's the family trip
- 12:26Speaker 4: for the twins. This trip it's where you guys go
- 12:28Speaker 4: Detroit and Colorado.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Am I am?
- 12:30Speaker 5: I right on that.
- 12:31Speaker 3: No, No, it's just three three games here in Detroit.
- 12:35Speaker 3: Family trip. Yeah is here.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Yeah, Okay, that's it.
- 12:40Speaker 4: Herman, Herman only allowed you guys to go to one
- 12:43Speaker 4: city this year.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Yeah. I know, we got to get on him a
- 12:46Speaker 2: little bit.
- 12:47Speaker 8: Man.
- 12:47Speaker 2: That's that's tough. It's one that's cheap, cheap. He needs
- 12:53Speaker 2: to open.
- 12:55Speaker 5: Yeah, Dustin, Dustin to Dustin. Probably don't even come on
- 12:58Speaker 5: this trip.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Yeah, thing, he's here. Herman is here though, so I'll get.
- 13:02Speaker 4: Herman has to be there, Yeah, because Herman's not missing
- 13:04Speaker 4: a chance to bring his kids. But my question is,
- 13:07Speaker 4: is when you're on the flights. You bring your you
- 13:08Speaker 4: bring your wife and your daughter on the on the
- 13:10Speaker 4: family flights. Yes, okay, good, No, because I would have
- 13:15Speaker 4: been scared to death. My foremotherle when I was my
- 13:18Speaker 4: kids were that young. I was with the White Sox
- 13:20Speaker 4: and we had zero family anything. So I think that
- 13:23Speaker 4: would be cool because it's much easier for your wife
- 13:25Speaker 4: and for you, But man, I would have been scared
- 13:27Speaker 4: to death. Like, man, if my kids starts crying on
- 13:29Speaker 4: the flight home, so I'm gonna look at me and be.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Like, oh stop, yeah, trust me.
- 13:34Speaker 3: I'm the same way before I had, uh my daughter,
- 13:37Speaker 3: I was the guy when you're on the plane and
- 13:39Speaker 3: you hear a baby, You're like, oh, of course there's
- 13:41Speaker 3: a baby in my ro you know, Like that's the worst.
- 13:44Speaker 3: So like every time I have my baby now and
- 13:46Speaker 3: she starts to whine or cry, I just know how
- 13:49Speaker 3: I felt, and so I'm trying to keep her calm
- 13:51Speaker 3: and whatnot. And but it was pretty it was pretty easy.
- 13:54Speaker 3: We were pinched between the Bell family and Joe Ryan's family,
- 13:59Speaker 3: so we had some babies around us for that flight.
- 14:02Speaker 3: It was and it's fairly short, it's about an hour flight,
- 14:04Speaker 3: so the baby was good though.
- 14:07Speaker 6: Can you get fans an idea of what a family flight,
- 14:11Speaker 6: our family trip looks like as far as like what
- 14:13Speaker 6: do they do? And as a player, are you a
- 14:16Speaker 6: little distracted?
- 14:19Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 14:19Speaker 3: I mean there was what four buses to pick us
- 14:22Speaker 3: up from the airport, and you know, there's a ton
- 14:24Speaker 3: of people staff, family, players, family, but I mean it
- 14:29Speaker 3: just it's pretty much chaos. You have kids everywhere, babies everywhere,
- 14:34Speaker 3: strollers being put under the bus. I'm sure if you're
- 14:38Speaker 3: a single player, it's probably pretty annoying to get on
- 14:43Speaker 3: the plane with all these families.
- 14:45Speaker 2: But it's been nice. I mean, we had they.
- 14:48Speaker 3: Have a break they had a breakfast for us this morning.
- 14:51Speaker 3: All the kids are run around getting on the station, pancakes,
- 14:56Speaker 3: stuff like that. So I mean it's cool. I mean,
- 14:58Speaker 3: you make memories and stuf u for families, and as
- 15:03Speaker 3: a player, distracting wise, it's kind of just like you're
- 15:05Speaker 3: kind of on edge on the plane, you know, like
- 15:07Speaker 3: we were talking about it all my baby be screaming
- 15:10Speaker 3: stuff like that. But honestly, i mean everyone basically took
- 15:14Speaker 3: the first bus today to get to the field, so
- 15:17Speaker 3: just to get here, so.
- 15:21Speaker 6: Yeah, and I'm surprised. I'm surprised you guys being in
- 15:23Speaker 6: the central they didn't make that trip to Chicago. I'm
- 15:26Speaker 6: not sure any wives were like, oh we're going to Detroit. Awesome,
- 15:30Speaker 6: love to go to Chicago. All the wives show up
- 15:32Speaker 6: in Chicago just saying.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Yeah, you're not wrong. I mean this was a tough pull.
- 15:38Speaker 2: We'll get on herman again.
- 15:40Speaker 7: Okay, okay, that's fair.
- 15:42Speaker 6: My last question, you just had your You said she's
- 15:44Speaker 6: four months old, Ava Lynn.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Correct, Yep, that is correct.
- 15:48Speaker 6: Have you experienced the dad strength or is it? Are
- 15:54Speaker 6: you did you like the first day in spring training,
- 15:56Speaker 6: were we're like, there it is. Everybody talks about Dad
- 15:59Speaker 6: strength and get a little extra juice, or are you like,
- 16:01Speaker 6: wait a minute, this is bull.
- 16:03Speaker 7: You guys didn't know, Like when's.
- 16:09Speaker 2: I think it's developing right now.
- 16:11Speaker 3: I think I didn't feel it at first and spring,
- 16:13Speaker 3: but like maybe it's gradually developing because the heavier she gets,
- 16:18Speaker 3: the more my bicep cramps. So maybe I'm getting some
- 16:23Speaker 3: more bicep strength. So I'm excited to see see how
- 16:26Speaker 3: it unfolds.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Yes, yes, how.
- 16:30Speaker 8: Does that work?
- 16:31Speaker 1: Oh yeah go ahead, aj no, go, I was just
- 16:35Speaker 1: gonna say, how does that work? You know, do some
- 16:38Speaker 1: guys just come back there and all of a sudden
- 16:40Speaker 1: they feel like, Hey, my baby doesn't care what I
- 16:43Speaker 1: do when I come home.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Yes, what what was the question?
- 16:48Speaker 1: The dad strength thing? When you see guys you know
- 16:50Speaker 1: that start to hit homers. Yeah, like, I mean, obviously
- 16:53Speaker 1: you've got teammates with with kids.
- 16:55Speaker 8: What's it like?
- 16:58Speaker 3: I mean, it's you. I'm home and it's NonStop. I mean,
- 17:02Speaker 3: for me, like, the biggest change of having a baby
- 17:06Speaker 3: is like, I come home and even if I go,
- 17:08Speaker 3: oh for four four k's or have a terrible day
- 17:11Speaker 3: at the field or whatever, that little baby, when she
- 17:14Speaker 3: smiles back at me, just completely cleans the air.
- 17:16Speaker 2: And I don't even know what baseball is. It's the
- 17:18Speaker 2: most insane feeling in the world.
- 17:20Speaker 3: The dad's strength probably comes from just carrying her around
- 17:24Speaker 3: all the time. You know, she wants to be held NonStop, responsibility,
- 17:28Speaker 3: five minutes, needs something every five minutes, you know, carrying
- 17:32Speaker 3: her around, and my biceps are just cramping all the
- 17:34Speaker 3: time from carrying her.
- 17:35Speaker 2: I hold her like a football every time. It's it's
- 17:39Speaker 2: it's wild.
- 17:40Speaker 4: Honestly, Hey, Cody, by the way, I hopefully you're fortunate
- 17:46Speaker 4: enough to be able to play so that your daughter
- 17:48Speaker 4: remembers you being a baseball player like I was.
- 17:51Speaker 5: But there'll come a point in time, Ozzie.
- 17:53Speaker 4: When I played with the White Sox used to love
- 17:55Speaker 4: kids in the clubhouse, and there got a point with
- 17:57Speaker 4: my daughter I.
- 17:57Speaker 5: Was like, you're a little bit too old to be
- 17:59Speaker 5: in the clubhouse with people.
- 18:02Speaker 4: Running around, you know. So hopefully you get to that point.
- 18:05Speaker 4: But they'll become a day when you come home and
- 18:06Speaker 4: you look at your wife and you say, I love
- 18:09Speaker 4: our daughter. I love my daughter's also named Ava. I
- 18:11Speaker 4: love you Ava, but you are a little bit too
- 18:13Speaker 4: old to be running around in the clubhouse. I'm sorry.
- 18:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean absolutely. I hope I play that long.
- 18:20Speaker 3: I turned thirty this year, so I'm getting up there.
- 18:22Speaker 3: But hey, it's I heard it's your prime years, and yeah,
- 18:26Speaker 3: hopefully I can play for the next eight years.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Who knows, we'll see.
- 18:31Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly when I had my daughter came home one
- 18:33Speaker 4: time and made a comment about something, and I was like, yeah,
- 18:36Speaker 4: that's it.
- 18:37Speaker 5: No more, she's not allowed to go in there anymore.
- 18:39Speaker 2: She's done not allowed.
- 18:41Speaker 7: That's it.
- 18:41Speaker 5: That's right, no more.
- 18:42Speaker 4: You can go in, but you can only go into
- 18:43Speaker 4: the theater and get candy. No more walk hanging out
- 18:46Speaker 4: in my locker.
- 18:46Speaker 8: That's it.
- 18:47Speaker 5: Sorry, Yeah, so hopefully you play long that point.
- 18:51Speaker 2: There's a cutoff line, you know.
- 18:53Speaker 5: Yes, exactly exactly.
- 18:55Speaker 4: By the way, tell Herman that he needs to change
- 18:58Speaker 4: the poster in his office or the picture in his office.
- 19:02Speaker 4: Have you seen the picture? Yeah, we all know that
- 19:05Speaker 4: wasn't his favorite catcher in the Twins. So you can
- 19:07Speaker 4: tell me he needs to go ahead and change that out.
- 19:10Speaker 2: All right, I got you. We got a few things
- 19:12Speaker 2: for herman.
- 19:13Speaker 5: Oh yeah, wants fun.
- 19:17Speaker 7: You got all this?
- 19:18Speaker 2: Oh god, he's that's tough.
- 19:26Speaker 6: My dom Bella would do anything for a treat, and
- 19:29Speaker 6: I want to give her a treat that will take

- 20:23Speaker 6: All right, Cody, I kind of refuse to do it
- 20:25Speaker 6: because I feel like you get crushed with oh rogers
- 20:28Speaker 6: or dad questions and all this stuff. But our chat
- 20:30Speaker 6: is just blowing us up. What kind of grandpa is he?
- 20:33Speaker 6: Is he a good grandpa? Or is he like, Hey, Ava,
- 20:36Speaker 6: here you go. I put a baseball in your hand
- 20:38Speaker 6: and I'm gonna get you to throw that. I'm gonna
- 20:40Speaker 6: get you throw the splitter. All her fingers aren't big
- 20:42Speaker 6: enough to throw the splitter yet, So what kind of
- 20:44Speaker 6: grandpa is he?
- 20:46Speaker 3: No, he's amazing. You know they call you know. His
- 20:49Speaker 3: name is Poppy Rocket.
- 20:51Speaker 2: Come on, come on, that's it.
- 20:53Speaker 3: But Poppy rocket, yep. I mean I have two I
- 20:56Speaker 3: have three nephews. My oldest brother has two boys. They're
- 21:00Speaker 3: nine years old, and then in case, he has a
- 21:02Speaker 3: baby who's about to turn one this month.
- 21:07Speaker 2: But no, he's amazing. He wants to be around all
- 21:09Speaker 2: the time. I mean, other than baseball.
- 21:11Speaker 3: He tells me that we're getting getting a golf club
- 21:13Speaker 3: and ave his hand as soon as possible. So that's
- 21:16Speaker 3: what she that's what he's putting on her, which I'm
- 21:18Speaker 3: actually all for.
- 21:19Speaker 2: She's gonna be playing golf. But no, he's great.
- 21:24Speaker 3: He's you know, he practices, you know, still throws VP
- 21:27Speaker 3: to my to my nephew's, my oldest brother's kids, and
- 21:32Speaker 3: he's out there hitting ground balls and doing all the
- 21:34Speaker 3: stuff that he did with us.
- 21:35Speaker 2: So it's it's awesome to watch.
- 21:37Speaker 3: He just basically are reliving the memories that we had
- 21:41Speaker 3: with him.
- 21:43Speaker 1: So he's basically like the best youth sports coach ever ever.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:48Speaker 3: Ever, Yeah, it's insane.
- 21:53Speaker 2: We were we were in Boston.
- 21:55Speaker 3: We were in Boston, and when we traveled on the road,
- 21:59Speaker 3: my dad would bring whiffle balls in his bag and
- 22:03Speaker 3: like I forgot what bat that was. There was like
- 22:05Speaker 3: a bat trainer that was like shaped like an angle
- 22:07Speaker 3: and it had like a flat I don't even know
- 22:11Speaker 3: what it was called, but he had that thing and
- 22:13Speaker 3: we would hit the whiffle balls into the hotel curtain
- 22:18Speaker 3: like every night, and he'd flip to us and we'd
- 22:20Speaker 3: hit it into the curtain like you know, take I
- 22:22Speaker 3: don't know, forty swings into the curtain. And so we
- 22:25Speaker 3: were in Boston and my nephews we had that whole
- 22:27Speaker 3: deal with the first pitch and all that with my
- 22:31Speaker 3: dad celebrating his twenty strikeout game, and.
- 22:35Speaker 2: So my whole family was there.
- 22:36Speaker 3: My nephews were there, and they were tossing there he
- 22:38Speaker 3: is tossing whiffleballs and they're hitting it into the curtain
- 22:41Speaker 3: at the hotel. I'm like, this is just, you know,
- 22:43Speaker 3: I'm just reliving my childhood.
- 22:47Speaker 5: That's awesome. That's awesome.
- 22:48Speaker 4: Speaking of your childhood, you played, you played college baseball Texas.
- 22:52Speaker 4: Your dad played college baseball in Texas. I don't know
- 22:54Speaker 4: if you've seen that new thirty for thirty or I
- 22:56Speaker 4: think it's sec story about the summer of eighty three
- 23:00Speaker 4: where your dad gets to brag about how they won
- 23:02Speaker 4: the national championship.
- 23:04Speaker 5: And all that. Have you seen that?
- 23:06Speaker 4: Does he talk about his college days, because that was
- 23:08Speaker 4: like my first memory of as being a kid. I
- 23:11Speaker 4: would turn on ESPN and it would be the College
- 23:13Speaker 4: World Series and it was always Texas. It was always
- 23:16Speaker 4: Oklahoma State. And for some reason, there was a guy
- 23:18Speaker 4: named brad Bean Blossom. I think he played at Texas
- 23:21Speaker 4: that I just remember his name forever, right, And so
- 23:24Speaker 4: now they run that And I had dad, Dave Maganten
- 23:26Speaker 4: as a hitting coach who was on Alabama. I obviously
- 23:29Speaker 4: know your dad because I played against them and I
- 23:31Speaker 4: played golf of them a bunch of times. But like
- 23:33Speaker 4: to me, do you guys share stories of Texas and
- 23:36Speaker 4: how much it changed in like those almost forty years.
- 23:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean he talks about majority of the time,
- 23:44Speaker 3: talks about how like Gustafson will just make them run
- 23:48Speaker 3: all day.
- 23:48Speaker 2: That's all he talked.
- 23:49Speaker 3: About is how much how much they had to run
- 23:51Speaker 3: in college and how you know, everything in the city
- 23:55Speaker 3: is completely different now and the stadium obviously was completely different.
- 24:00Speaker 3: And in the College World Series they played at the
- 24:02Speaker 3: other stadium.
- 24:04Speaker 2: Do you know what's called it for? I was called
- 24:08Speaker 2: but Anyways, it was more so.
- 24:11Speaker 3: The staff that they had at Texas when he was there.
- 24:14Speaker 3: And then obviously they had like Spike going trying to
- 24:18Speaker 3: think who else was on that team, but they had
- 24:20Speaker 3: Mike Caple and who was the third one was? They
- 24:24Speaker 3: had an unbelievable pitching staff. And anyways, Calvin no, I
- 24:32Speaker 3: think he was right after.
- 24:34Speaker 4: They had Mike Bromley, who just died not long ago,
- 24:36Speaker 4: passed away leagues.
- 24:40Speaker 5: Yeah, they had a they had a pretty sick team.
- 24:42Speaker 2: He yeah, he said.
- 24:43Speaker 3: I think it was in eighty two they lost in
- 24:47Speaker 3: the World College World Series maybe, and Spike Oing got
- 24:50Speaker 3: drafted in the first round, and he said, everyone was,
- 24:53Speaker 3: you know, crying and saying they're not gonna they lost
- 24:55Speaker 3: their best player and they're gonna be terrible next year.
- 24:58Speaker 3: And then they came back and won the World Yours.
- 25:00Speaker 3: I was like, all right, that's what he talks about. Really,
- 25:04Speaker 3: I don't know, I don't know any in depth stories
- 25:07Speaker 3: of like the real stories.
- 25:09Speaker 2: I want to know, right like, what what were they
- 25:11Speaker 2: doing on Sixth Street? Was there a sixth Street? You
- 25:13Speaker 2: know back then? You know what was going on? You know,
- 25:16Speaker 2: I need to hear about all that stuff.
- 25:17Speaker 3: I think and then Mike Cable had some good times
- 25:20Speaker 3: there at some pool halls and stuff like that.
- 25:22Speaker 2: You know people.
- 25:26Speaker 3: We're gonna get tell me, we're gonna we're gonna get Yeah,
- 25:28Speaker 3: we're gonna get into those pretty soon.
- 25:31Speaker 1: Need them, Yeah, need him exactly on or off of
- 25:35Speaker 1: a show.
- 25:35Speaker 2: We need him.
- 25:36Speaker 8: I'm with you.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Well, well, we we enjoyed this. Cody really really appreciate
- 25:41Speaker 1: the time. You're a great interview. Thank you so much
- 25:43Speaker 1: for joining us. Keep doing your thing out there.
- 25:45Speaker 2: Yeah, appreciate it. Thanks, guys.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Works to talk ball and life with Tyler Kinley up
- 26:03Speaker 1: the Braves on FT right now. Tyler, great to have
- 26:05Speaker 1: you on the show. Thank you so much for joining us.
- 26:08Speaker 1: How you doing and I know you're coming back from
- 26:10Speaker 1: things right now, but how.
- 26:11Speaker 8: You feeling good? Good to be here with you, guys.
- 26:14Speaker 8: Good elbows good.
- 26:16Speaker 9: Had a little hiccup recently, and we're kind of short
- 26:19Speaker 9: staffed in the bullpen, so kind of thought.
- 26:21Speaker 8: Long term, you know, hopefully we're able to make a
- 26:23Speaker 8: deep r on this year.
- 26:24Speaker 9: The plan was let's let's get some rest now and
- 26:26Speaker 9: get things right and be ready for the second half.
- 26:28Speaker 8: So good, just a little breather right now, but all.
- 26:31Speaker 5: Good, Tyler. Yeah, what's it like being on that not
- 26:37Speaker 5: being able to help?
- 26:38Speaker 8: Right?
- 26:38Speaker 4: Like, this is one of the big questions we have
- 26:40Speaker 4: when you're injured and you're coming back from stuff and
- 26:41Speaker 4: you're clearly not in Chicago. So because those trees, they
- 26:44Speaker 4: don't have those in Chicago. So what's it like. Do
- 26:47Speaker 4: you get bored? Do you go to the field every day?
- 26:49Speaker 4: How do you keep your mind from wandering?
- 26:52Speaker 8: Yeah, well it's new.
- 26:53Speaker 9: I mean I just got I was in Chicago yesterday,
- 26:55Speaker 9: you know, so we got a memri and whatnot. Yesterday
- 26:57Speaker 9: it flew back so I can be with our RPT
- 26:59Speaker 9: here in Atlanta and EF for a couple of days.
- 27:01Speaker 9: No reason to travel on the rest of the road trip.
- 27:05Speaker 9: But yeah, you stay active.
- 27:06Speaker 8: You know, you still text with the guys, You still
- 27:08Speaker 8: watch the games that night. You know, you get a
- 27:11Speaker 8: little bit more free time than you're used to.
- 27:12Speaker 9: So maybe you dive into whether it's some some numbers, whether.
- 27:15Speaker 8: It's some video.
- 27:17Speaker 9: You just try to find some alternate avenues to stay sharp.
- 27:20Speaker 9: And you know, even though you're away and technically separated,
- 27:24Speaker 9: you still try to feel as engaged as you can.
- 27:27Speaker 6: There's so much to unpack when somebody has an injury.
- 27:30Speaker 6: But when it's a picture with an elbow injury, can
- 27:33Speaker 6: you give Braves fans a little bit more of like, relax,
- 27:37Speaker 6: this is totally fine and not the elbow.
- 27:41Speaker 7: We heard, elbow crap. Here we go again.
- 27:44Speaker 8: Yeah for sure, Yeah, I had an MRI image, came
- 27:48Speaker 8: back great.
- 27:48Speaker 9: Saw the White Sox doctor in Chicago, saw our doctor
- 27:51Speaker 9: today in Atlanta.
- 27:52Speaker 8: Structurally, everything looks good.
- 27:54Speaker 9: We're not concerned about it, you know, basically, just had
- 27:57Speaker 9: some information that that kind of popped up, and we
- 28:01Speaker 9: thought it was best Rather than short ending the bullpen
- 28:03Speaker 9: for a couple of days and giving me a couple
- 28:05Speaker 9: of days off, we thought it was best to, hey,
- 28:07Speaker 9: let's just be be you know, a little bit more
- 28:11Speaker 9: precise about this. Give us a couple more days and
- 28:14Speaker 9: knock it out completely and then give the bullpen a
- 28:16Speaker 9: fresh arm. That way, that or not you know, taxed,
- 28:18Speaker 9: even though you know they kind of are at times anyways,
- 28:22Speaker 9: So we're not we're not too concerned long term, just
- 28:24Speaker 9: a little short term breather, you.
- 28:25Speaker 8: Know, a couple of weeks might be and then get
- 28:27Speaker 8: back in there.
- 28:29Speaker 7: Is this the.
- 28:29Speaker 6: Beauty of being the hottest team early in the season.
- 28:32Speaker 6: Is this because we always we always hear about it
- 28:34Speaker 6: from the Dodgers. Well, the Dodgers they put guys on
- 28:37Speaker 6: IL just because it's like, well it's gonna be a
- 28:39Speaker 6: little sunny out there, so we'll let them sit in
- 28:41Speaker 6: the shade for a little while.
- 28:43Speaker 7: Now the Braves, like, the Braves are doing the same
- 28:45Speaker 7: kind of thing. Because you guys.
- 28:46Speaker 6: Are so hot early, it's affording you this opportunity. If
- 28:50Speaker 6: it was a one run, a one game lead in
- 28:52Speaker 6: the division, maybe Tyler Kenley has to stay on the
- 28:57Speaker 6: active roster.
- 29:00Speaker 9: It's a luxury to be in the position we're in
- 29:02Speaker 9: right now. It's a luxury for us to be able
- 29:04Speaker 9: to zoom out and kind of look long term at
- 29:06Speaker 9: the rest of the season, look at the upcoming series
- 29:09Speaker 9: and whatnot. You know, we had discussions if we're in
- 29:12Speaker 9: September in a playoff question like, there's no way you're
- 29:14Speaker 9: putting me on the IL. You know, I'm going every day.
- 29:17Speaker 9: So yeah, the position that we put ourselves in allows
- 29:20Speaker 9: us to kind of, you know, manipulate the schedule and
- 29:23Speaker 9: roster a little bit. We've been able to give starters
- 29:26Speaker 9: an extra day off, We've been able to kind of
- 29:29Speaker 9: move around the rotation.
- 29:31Speaker 8: Obviously, you know, the.
- 29:36Speaker 9: Position we've put ourselves allows this, you know, like you said,
- 29:40Speaker 9: so we're just trying to navigate it and trying to.
- 29:42Speaker 8: Be smart because the goal is to have a deep
- 29:44Speaker 8: run this year.
- 29:48Speaker 7: Crouch.
- 29:49Speaker 4: You know, I travel all the time and I'm always
- 29:51Speaker 4: looking for possible tickets to go see Evans concerts, MLB games.
- 29:55Speaker 5: When I do, I always find Seakeek.
- 29:57Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm not traveling so pretty much. I'm looking for
- 30:00Speaker 6: the games all in my area. I'm gonna look for
- 30:02Speaker 6: an Orioles game. I'm gonna look for the Phillies game,
- 30:05Speaker 6: the Mets game, the Yankees game. But you know what
- 30:08Speaker 6: else is coming up? The All Star Game. Sea Geeks
- 30:11Speaker 6: got me.
- 30:12Speaker 4: Hey, you're gonna need them. Tickets to the All Star

- 30:48Speaker 6: Wait, do you guys look at the division and the
- 30:50Speaker 6: lead and everything, because a lot of players say, ah,
- 30:53Speaker 6: we never even look at the scoreboard until August fifteenth,
- 30:57Speaker 6: and I think that's kind of a lie.
- 31:01Speaker 9: Yeah, some guys do. I'm sure some guys check it
- 31:03Speaker 9: daily nightly, you know. I think what happens.
- 31:06Speaker 8: You guys know the.
- 31:06Speaker 9: Clubhouse atmosphere, the TVs are always on, and you guys
- 31:09Speaker 9: are on TV, MLB Networks on TV, you know, so
- 31:12Speaker 9: you can't really hide from it.
- 31:14Speaker 8: It pops up.
- 31:14Speaker 9: I wouldn't say our clubhouse is actively searching for it
- 31:17Speaker 9: to look and check, but yeah, it's on the TV.
- 31:21Speaker 8: Guys see it.
- 31:21Speaker 9: Guys know that we've got a you know, a decent
- 31:23Speaker 9: lead in the division. We know the Phillies have been
- 31:25Speaker 9: playing great.
- 31:26Speaker 8: You know. Fortunately, we've been playing.
- 31:27Speaker 9: Great as well, so that kind of negates their their
- 31:30Speaker 9: little run that they went on.
- 31:32Speaker 8: But yeah, we're aware of it, you know.
- 31:34Speaker 9: But it doesn't deter from our you know, our day
- 31:36Speaker 9: to day practice and our day to day goals, you know,
- 31:38Speaker 9: because at the end of the day, we still got
- 31:39Speaker 9: to take care of business.
- 31:43Speaker 5: Tyler, your bullpen's been great this year.
- 31:45Speaker 4: What is it about this collective group, whether it's Lee, Iglesias, Suarez, Dodd,
- 31:50Speaker 4: whoever it is, has been out there.
- 31:52Speaker 5: What has made this bullpend so special?
- 31:55Speaker 9: Honestly, I think there's no egos out there, and I
- 31:58Speaker 9: think that starts in the season when you bring a
- 32:00Speaker 9: guy in like Robert Suarez, who led the National League
- 32:03Speaker 9: and saves last year, who's, you know, arguably one of
- 32:06Speaker 9: the best closers in baseball, and he comes in and says, yeah,
- 32:09Speaker 9: I'll come through the eighth inning there, I'll come set
- 32:11Speaker 9: up for you know, Iglesias, and that immediately sets the
- 32:14Speaker 9: tone for the rest of us that, Hey, you know,
- 32:16Speaker 9: as much as you always want to increase your role
- 32:18Speaker 9: in the bullpen, like, it really doesn't matter because every
- 32:21Speaker 9: out is important on a winning team, you know, So
- 32:24Speaker 9: are our mindset out there is taking.
- 32:27Speaker 8: The ball every day, it's being available, being durable.
- 32:29Speaker 9: And then our mindset is finishing our innings and getting
- 32:32Speaker 9: the outs that we need. To get because then it
- 32:34Speaker 9: allows the other guys to get the rest they need,
- 32:36Speaker 9: It allows the other guys to stay sharp. You know,
- 32:39Speaker 9: there's gonna be times where guys got to come in
- 32:41Speaker 9: for us, or we got to pick up somebody else,
- 32:42Speaker 9: and I think that's just kind of what we've embraced
- 32:45Speaker 9: out there, and you know, fortunately we've had momentum behind
- 32:48Speaker 9: us early.
- 32:49Speaker 2: All right.
- 32:49Speaker 6: Well, then the token question is are the outs and
- 32:52Speaker 6: different innings a different feeling for a pitcher? Are the
- 32:55Speaker 6: ninth inning outs a save situation different than the seventh thinning?
- 33:03Speaker 9: I mean, it's hard to say, because technically the answer
- 33:07Speaker 9: is yes, right, the last three outs are the most
- 33:08Speaker 9: important outs. Obviously a different energy, a different aura, everything
- 33:12Speaker 9: in the stadium is different at that time. But I
- 33:15Speaker 9: think whenever you're not throwing the ninth inning and you're
- 33:18Speaker 9: throwing the eighth, the seventh, and the sixth, you know
- 33:20Speaker 9: your opportunity is your leverage, and so you create your
- 33:22Speaker 9: own leverage mentally, whether we're up a couple, whether we're
- 33:25Speaker 9: down a couple. I think the biggest thing is it's
- 33:28Speaker 9: the mental state that you're in that can allow you
- 33:29Speaker 9: to put those binders on when you're.
- 33:31Speaker 8: Up a ton or when you're down a ton, and
- 33:33Speaker 8: make it as important as it is, because you.
- 33:35Speaker 9: Know, getting that twenty first and twenty second out, you know,
- 33:39Speaker 9: gives you the opportunity to get those final three outs,
- 33:42Speaker 9: you know, and if we don't stop the game there
- 33:44Speaker 9: in the sixth or stop the bleeding in the seventh,
- 33:45Speaker 9: it doesn't give our potent line up a chance to
- 33:48Speaker 9: come back, you know. So we're really dissecting the outs
- 33:51Speaker 9: and you know, given each one, it's important it deserves.
- 33:56Speaker 5: Tyler, you were traded last year from the Rockies.
- 33:59Speaker 4: Can you describe the differentfer in the Rockies versus the
- 34:02Speaker 4: Braves and now the Rockies obviously on a traditional pitching
- 34:05Speaker 4: type organization. The Braves for years have kind of been
- 34:07Speaker 4: known for their pitching. Is there any difference in philosophy
- 34:10Speaker 4: or anything they did to you when you came over
- 34:12Speaker 4: to Atlanta from Colorado.
- 34:14Speaker 9: Yeah, we looked at some numbers, We looked at you know,
- 34:17Speaker 9: some some pitch usage, some shapes and whatnot that were
- 34:21Speaker 9: really working well for me in my time in Colorado,
- 34:24Speaker 9: and we just wanted to enhance that in Atlanta and
- 34:26Speaker 9: we you know, leaned on the side there a little
- 34:28Speaker 9: bit more leaned on the curve ball a little bit more,
- 34:31Speaker 9: you know, got a little bit more specific with the fastball,
- 34:33Speaker 9: win to use it, Where for righties, where the lefties
- 34:36Speaker 9: and whatnot. You know, so we definitely got a little
- 34:40Speaker 9: more specific with how to use my stuff. And then
- 34:44Speaker 9: obviously being away from altitude just allowed my repertoire to
- 34:47Speaker 9: be that much more consistent. I didn't have to worry
- 34:50Speaker 9: about Okay, at home, I'm throwing to these sites and
- 34:52Speaker 9: this is what's going on. Then we get on the road,
- 34:54Speaker 9: Now I've got to harness a whiffle ball and I've
- 34:56Speaker 9: got to find these sites. So it just allowed me
- 34:58Speaker 9: to be more consistent. And then when you attach that
- 35:01Speaker 9: to a game plan that you know, an organization, you
- 35:05Speaker 9: know with the logo like the Atlanta Braves says hey,
- 35:07Speaker 9: we think this is going to make you successful, you know,
- 35:09Speaker 9: you buy right in and you go, all right, well.
- 35:13Speaker 7: Actually we just came up earlier in the show.
- 35:14Speaker 6: I will see if you know it, because you play
- 35:17Speaker 6: what is the third highest elevation in professional baseball right.
- 35:22Speaker 9: Now, Drewis Park, behind the Diamondbacks and behind the Rockies.
- 35:27Speaker 6: Okay, so so they let you know so that in
- 35:29Speaker 6: case in case the ball doesn't move quite the same.
- 35:31Speaker 6: Then you're like, oh, well that's why it was. It
- 35:33Speaker 6: wasn't because I didn't make my pitch right.
- 35:35Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 35:36Speaker 9: Yeah, Well, I mean you get pitching in Colorado, you
- 35:39Speaker 9: learn how to pitch on the moon, so anywhere else
- 35:41Speaker 9: feels much better.
- 35:42Speaker 6: It makes it, It makes it that much easier. Okay,
- 35:45Speaker 6: So last year when you came over, your manager was Snit.
- 35:49Speaker 6: Now you have Walt Weiss. Can you give us like
- 35:52Speaker 6: the most glaring difference between the two of them?
- 35:59Speaker 8: Ah, the most glaring difference.
- 36:05Speaker 9: It's hard to say, because every individual has different qualities
- 36:09Speaker 9: that make them who they are, right, you know, Snit
- 36:11Speaker 9: was a little bit more calm, a little bit more reserved.
- 36:15Speaker 7: You know.
- 36:16Speaker 9: Walt is maybe a little bit more intense, a little
- 36:19Speaker 9: bit more you know, anytime this comes up, you feel
- 36:24Speaker 9: like you're comparing Walt versus Snit and goods and bads,
- 36:27Speaker 9: and that's really not the case.
- 36:28Speaker 8: You just have two different individuals who are wired differently.
- 36:31Speaker 9: Walt, you know, seems a little more fiery, seems a
- 36:34Speaker 9: little bit like he's intentional with what he does and
- 36:38Speaker 9: when he says it and when he grabs guys and
- 36:40Speaker 9: when he doesn't. You know, he's a second time through
- 36:44Speaker 9: as a manager now, right. The first time he felt
- 36:46Speaker 9: like he wasn't quite as prepared as he would have
- 36:49Speaker 9: liked to have been. And now this time he got
- 36:51Speaker 9: to be bench coach for the past eight years, he
- 36:53Speaker 9: got to lean on Snit, learn on Snit, you know,
- 36:56Speaker 9: and now he's got his chance to, you know, operate
- 36:59Speaker 9: the way he wants to. And I think he's been
- 37:01Speaker 9: ready for that. And I think that the biggest thing
- 37:04Speaker 9: that we all feel is we feel the energy with Walt,
- 37:06Speaker 9: and you know, collectively it's been a great start for us.
- 37:10Speaker 6: Yeah, nothing you said, I feel like was against Snid
- 37:13Speaker 6: or anything like that, just comparing the two of them.
- 37:15Speaker 7: So has you guys have forty five wins? Has has
- 37:18Speaker 7: Walt yelled at you guys?
- 37:21Speaker 8: No?
- 37:21Speaker 9: No, you know, Yeah, he's not.
- 37:26Speaker 8: Blowing up anybody, throwing any chairs or anything, you know.
- 37:29Speaker 9: But one thing he did early on that I think
- 37:30Speaker 9: a lot of the guys loved is we were playing
- 37:33Speaker 9: well and he had held a meeting with us and
- 37:36Speaker 9: just said, guys, a lot of times in the locker rooms,
- 37:38Speaker 9: you hold meetings when things are going wrong, when you
- 37:39Speaker 9: need to write the ship when you need to correct stuff.
- 37:42Speaker 9: He's like, I want to have one right now to
- 37:44Speaker 9: let you guys know how well you have been playing,
- 37:46Speaker 9: and we need to celebrate.
- 37:47Speaker 8: That, embrace that, and we need to keep that going.
- 37:50Speaker 9: And I think that was just refreshing for the guys
- 37:51Speaker 9: because you know, it just showed how much he's paying
- 37:54Speaker 9: attention and how locked in he is, and how he
- 37:56Speaker 9: just wanted to, you.
- 37:57Speaker 8: Know, set his tone with this team.
- 38:02Speaker 1: Hey, Tyler, can you talk us through real quick your
- 38:06Speaker 1: off season? So the Braves clearly liked you, and the
- 38:09Speaker 1: option was declined, but then you ended up linking back
- 38:11Speaker 1: for essentially this same money. So did you get to
- 38:15Speaker 1: just make a few phone calls and then be like, cool,
- 38:17Speaker 1: we both like each other, let's do this again.
- 38:21Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 38:22Speaker 8: I mean, you know, the off season's crazy, right.
- 38:24Speaker 9: You know, everybody in the beginning the off season has
- 38:26Speaker 9: their eyes set on all the you know, the prettiest
- 38:28Speaker 9: girls at the bar and whatnot.
- 38:29Speaker 8: And thinking that they can land them.
- 38:32Speaker 9: You know, So in the beginning, we thought there was
- 38:34Speaker 9: a good chance the option might get picked up, and
- 38:36Speaker 9: then you know, speaking with the Braves, you know they
- 38:38Speaker 9: had some bigger ticket items that they needed to go
- 38:41Speaker 9: after first, you know, and they communicated with us throughout like, hey, look,
- 38:45Speaker 9: we still want you. We just can't commit to it
- 38:47Speaker 9: right now, but we're going to be in touch throughout
- 38:49Speaker 9: the off season. We're going to let you know how
- 38:50Speaker 9: things go. You know, you're gonna be the first reliever
- 38:53Speaker 9: we call when we talk about the bullpen and whatnot.
- 38:55Speaker 9: So the conversation stayed fluid the whole time. I think
- 38:58Speaker 9: there was a mutual desire for the both of us
- 39:00Speaker 9: to you know, link back up together, you know. And
- 39:04Speaker 9: then we just did our diligence on the other side
- 39:06Speaker 9: of it and talked with other teams, got some offers
- 39:08Speaker 9: in to see where my my market was, and uh,
- 39:11Speaker 9: you know, selfishly for us, we wanted to go back
- 39:13Speaker 9: to Atlanta, and then we were able to accomplish that.
- 39:18Speaker 5: That's great, that's great. Atlanta's a great place to have
- 39:20Speaker 5: great people there. They're they're awesome. I have to I
- 39:23Speaker 5: have to ask you this. We're going to show you
- 39:25Speaker 5: a picture. Have you seen these? Have you seen these
- 39:27Speaker 5: in the Braves Clubhouse? Have you seen that?
- 39:30Speaker 2: Oh?
- 39:30Speaker 8: Yeah, well your catcher's in the.
- 39:31Speaker 4: Sport round Oh yeah, okay, have you Then we're going
- 39:34Speaker 4: to show you the next picture. What I want to
- 39:39Speaker 4: know is when you see Eddie Perez next time, you
- 39:42Speaker 4: tell him that my picture is bigger than his picture
- 39:44Speaker 4: on the bag, so he can hah, go away.
- 39:48Speaker 8: No, no coincidence there, right, yeah, exactly, So just makes
- 39:52Speaker 8: it that's intentional. Yesdi'll love that.
- 39:56Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 39:57Speaker 4: And on his belt, I know it says ninety nine
- 39:59Speaker 4: NLCS MVP. I know, I know he still lives off that.
- 40:03Speaker 4: But that bag is seriously one of the coolest bags
- 40:05Speaker 4: I've ever seen. I've never seen one. I got a
- 40:07Speaker 4: picture center of it to me yesterday from the people
- 40:10Speaker 4: in Chicago, and I just want to say to the
- 40:12Speaker 4: Braves Clubhouse crew whoever came up with that, I'm just
- 40:15Speaker 4: proud I was a little part of it.
- 40:16Speaker 5: And make sure you rub it in Eddy's face. Thank you.
- 40:19Speaker 9: Yeah, it's awesome. I'd never seen a bag like that before.
- 40:22Speaker 9: And then the first time I saw at some of
- 40:23Speaker 9: our bullpenk catchers when they were bringing their gear out
- 40:25Speaker 9: and whatnot, I stopped and looked at the bag, and
- 40:27Speaker 9: you know, started to look at all you guys, the
- 40:29Speaker 9: previous catchers.
- 40:29Speaker 8: I was like, man, that's pretty cool.
- 40:32Speaker 6: All right, So you've been on Minnesota, Miami, Colorado and Atlanta.
- 40:37Speaker 6: Can you explain the level and you kind of hit
- 40:40Speaker 6: it a little bit when you're talking about Colorado and Atlanta,
- 40:42Speaker 6: but pitching, can you explain the level of professionalism and
- 40:47Speaker 6: not not bagging other organizations?
- 40:49Speaker 7: Just what the.
- 40:51Speaker 6: Braves do compared to you know, what you had seen
- 40:55Speaker 6: in the big leagues so far.
- 40:57Speaker 9: Yeah, just speaking on the Braves alone, I mean in
- 41:00Speaker 9: first class from the get go. You know, you kind
- 41:02Speaker 9: of see it across the field. You hear guys, you
- 41:04Speaker 9: have former teammates that go over there and they rave
- 41:06Speaker 9: about it, and you you know, like what is it?
- 41:07Speaker 7: What?
- 41:07Speaker 9: You know, what are they speaking about? But then you
- 41:10Speaker 9: get here and you live in and you be a
- 41:11Speaker 9: part of it.
- 41:12Speaker 3: Uh.
- 41:12Speaker 9: You know, the way that the front office communicates with
- 41:15Speaker 9: the players is extremely transparent. There's a lot of fluid
- 41:20Speaker 9: conversations that and the players respect that. Everybody wants to
- 41:23Speaker 9: know where they're where they stand. Uh, there's not a
- 41:26Speaker 9: lot of gray area. And I don't know what he
- 41:28Speaker 9: meant by that. You know, sometimes we talk maybe too much,
- 41:30Speaker 9: and which is great for transparency. And then the way
- 41:33Speaker 9: that the coaching staff, the training staff, the clubhouse staff,
- 41:37Speaker 9: you know, I got here last year and Atlanta's had
- 41:40Speaker 9: their worst year and you know seven or eight years
- 41:42Speaker 9: that they're not going to be in the postseason.
- 41:44Speaker 8: And it was such a.
- 41:45Speaker 9: Weird position because everybody was like so excited that I
- 41:48Speaker 9: was here, but then there, I mean even from clubhouse assistance,
- 41:51Speaker 9: the very next conversation was like, sorry, we're not, like,
- 41:55Speaker 9: you know, going to the postseason. And everybody was so disappointed.
- 41:58Speaker 9: And you could tell that everybody involved is invested. From
- 42:03Speaker 9: the people that greet you in the parking lot when
- 42:05Speaker 9: you pull in, from the security people, from you know,
- 42:07Speaker 9: security guard in our bullpen that's with us, you know,
- 42:10Speaker 9: the people in the dugout, the staff, everybody is bought in.
- 42:13Speaker 9: Everybody believes you know, Braves Country, and you just feel it.
- 42:17Speaker 8: And then the way that the players are just treated.
- 42:20Speaker 9: It's just like, hey, you focus on being successful and
- 42:23Speaker 9: you playing the game, and we're going to take care
- 42:24Speaker 9: of everything else. We're going to take care of your families,
- 42:26Speaker 9: We're going to take care of your your friends when
- 42:28Speaker 9: they're in town. You know, anything you need treatment wise,
- 42:31Speaker 9: let's get you checked out, Let's get everything you need,
- 42:34Speaker 9: you know.
- 42:34Speaker 8: So it's a good, fully.
- 42:37Speaker 9: Operational system that's been obviously going for a long time.
- 42:40Speaker 9: It's no success for the Braves. History that they've had,
- 42:44Speaker 9: and you know, to be a part of it now
- 42:45Speaker 9: is awesome. And I just I rave about it to
- 42:47Speaker 9: my buddies on other teams because.
- 42:49Speaker 8: I'm like, hey, man, like if Atlanta call is like,
- 42:51Speaker 8: don't pass that up, come on over here.
- 42:54Speaker 1: That's really cool and that's good insight and I think
- 42:57Speaker 1: underrated insight too for people and players, many players listening
- 43:01Speaker 1: to this show to understand. You know, it's right, it's
- 43:04Speaker 1: not necessarily what the others aren't doing, it's what some
- 43:06Speaker 1: of the ones are doing that stands out and make
- 43:09Speaker 1: sure that you guys just go on the field and
- 43:11Speaker 1: focus on winning. And that's why they've had so much
- 43:13Speaker 1: of it. They're they're spoiled out there. The fans too
- 43:16Speaker 1: with how successful the team is and how great it
- 43:18Speaker 1: is out there. I mean, we've been there plenty of times,
- 43:20Speaker 1: so I'm glad. Yeah, you were able to put it
- 43:22Speaker 1: towards in a good way. Great interview, man, great conversation.
- 43:25Speaker 1: Really enjoyed it, Tyler. I hope you did too. Get
- 43:28Speaker 1: well really quick, which I'm sure you are. You're almost
- 43:30Speaker 1: coming back and then good luck.
- 43:33Speaker 8: Awesome, thanks guys. Yeah I'll run you. Yeah yeah.
- 43:36Speaker 1: Let's do it again soon
