- 4:03Whether you are a gear nerd, a weekend warrior, or a competitive racer,
- 4:08this series is packed with insights from someone who truly lives and breathes cycling.
- 4:13Aaron, welcome to Zone to Speak.
- 4:16Thank you, Juliana. I really appreciate you having me on the show,
- 4:20and I'm looking forward to sharing a little bit of my story and some of the
- 4:23cool gear that I get to test as a cycling journalist and racer.
- 4:27Awesome. I'm excited to hear all about it. So you've been involved in cycling journalism for years.
- 4:34How did you get into it, and what keeps you excited to stay in the industry?
- 4:40It's a funny story because I haven't been involved in cycling for as long as I would have liked.
- 4:47Obviously, I rode bicycles as a child, but I was playing other sports.
- 4:52I grew up in South Africa, so there was a lot of cricket, tennis,
- 4:55soccer. Cycling wasn't massive.
- 4:57I've been cycling since 2013. So it's 10 years, 11 years, somewhere around there.
- 5:03And it was only in 2012 when I started at one of the magazines I worked for,
- 5:10which was a car magazine.
- 5:11I'm also a former motoring journalist.
- 5:13And at the time, all my colleagues were riding bicycles and they kind of peer
- 5:18pressured me into getting a bike.
- 5:20Didn't know what I was getting myself into.
- 5:23But yeah, the bug bit really hard. and the rest is history.
- 5:30I got into cycling journalism in 2016.
- 5:34So the company I worked for, Topcar, was part of a massive publishing house
- 5:40and they had the license for Bicycling Magazine.
- 5:43So it was Bicycling Magazine, South Africa, which was in the office next door to ours.
- 5:48And there was a position that opened as digital editor. I applied for the job.
- 5:53I got the job. and yeah i've been involved
- 5:56in cycling mainstream cycling journalism ever
- 5:59since and as a journalist i've been
- 6:02i've been writing about all sorts of things with wheels since for for 19 years
- 6:06so i've got experience on both sides of the fence anything with wheels i've
- 6:11even worked in kind of corporate communications for the cape epic i did a one-year
- 6:16stint there oh cool which was pretty fun I prefer content creation, though.
- 6:21I left there after a year because I was itching to create things.
- 6:26But it was a nice experience, and I enjoyed that.
- 6:29But what keeps me excited is probably the innovation and the tech developments,
- 6:33the new bikes and the products.
- 6:35There's always something new being created, and this forces us to move with
- 6:39the times, even as a journalist.
- 6:41And that's both on and off the bike.
- 6:43Everything is getting faster, the bikes, the races, even media production.
- 6:47And I just enjoy the speed and the intensity of everything.
- 6:52Yeah, it's incredible, but at the same time as a cyclist, and it's just so hard
- 6:59to choose gear, to choose the right bike, the right size, the right setup.
- 7:07So of course, it's amazing to have, you know, you and channels like road.cc
- 7:15that we can go and try to figure it out a little bit.
- 7:18So so how does it work like at the channel how like do brands and stuff for you guys to.
- 7:26Review test or you of
- 7:30course trying to keep up with the industry you go and get those things
- 7:33or you contact the brands how does it work yeah it's
- 7:36a combination of the two obviously at road cc we've
- 7:40we've been around for a long time now we've got
- 7:42a sizable presence and we're kind of a
- 7:45trusted authority when it comes to all things cycling so
- 7:49a lot of the brands will contact us and because
- 7:52we are tier one media publication we're on
- 7:55sort of the a-list if you want to call it that so
- 7:57when new products are being launched we are
- 8:01contacted either going to attend the launch
- 8:04or being sent the product ahead of time so that when the embargo lifts
- 8:07we can have our tests done etc but then there are also products that we request
- 8:13personally and that that that could be like a startup brand or a brand that
- 8:17perhaps hasn't thought about contacting us i mean if there's something that
- 8:21needs to be reviewed we will review it but we're in a pretty special.
- 8:27Space where where we get a lot of the
- 8:30brands contacting us first okay okay
- 8:33that makes sense being a mix of the two and
- 8:37so gravel and bikepacking and
- 8:40donor cycling have exploded lately
- 8:43what do you think is driving this shift
- 8:46and where do you see this going yeah i
- 8:49think i think it's the freedom of doing something different
- 8:53i think the pure racing side of things has
- 8:56always dictated where the sport has gone and there's always been
- 8:59a massive focus on on power and speed
- 9:02and performance and the pro peloton it's a cutthroat place you either need to
- 9:08succeed or you get eaten up very very quickly and it can be a hard tough place
- 9:13for riders and I think endurance and gravel cycling has created a new avenue for these riders but.
- 9:22And obviously that's pertaining more to the pro side, but I think also as general
- 9:28enthusiasts for the sport, it's also given another offshoot for us to explore.
- 9:33I also think the rise of social media and content creation and to a certain
- 9:38extent, even the cycling influencer, it's given these athletes a new path to take.
- 9:44And we're getting different people becoming authorities on the same sport.
- 9:50So it's not the same people and the same riders telling us what we need to do.
- 9:54The other people, everyday people, you know, your neighbor next door can now
- 9:59actually be an authority on the sport and show people what it's about and bringing
- 10:04more people to the sport we all love.
- 10:06And I think we're seeing this among the amateurs and the pro riders and cycling
- 10:10is becoming more about adventure and the discovery than the breakneck speeds
- 10:16and power that you need to be able to compete at the best. And I think that is shaping the future.
- 10:23You don't have to be a pro. We just need to embrace the culture and the lifestyle.
- 10:27And I think the rest will all fall into place.
- 10:29Yeah, beautifully said. Yeah, I couldn't agree more.
- 10:33I it's one of the things i love about endurance cycling
- 10:36or gravel it's just like you don't need to be a pro you don't need to be the
- 10:40strongest you don't need to be the fastest you can and it's amazing but you
- 10:44also you don't have to be you can just you know experience yourself new places
- 10:49new routes new discoveries so that's that's really cool yeah i think.
- 10:56We tend to get sucked into riding our bikes fast all the time.
- 11:00And often you kind of lose the focus and you're kind of hunting the destination
- 11:07as opposed to enjoying the journey.
- 11:10And if you slow things down a bit and kind of just tap into what's happening
- 11:13around you, you get to experience things you actually just didn't see before
- 11:17because you're so focused on your cycling computer, you know,
- 11:20trying to grab that segment and not looking around.
- 11:23There's a lot of nature you can take in, there's animals, there's things you
- 11:27can see and you just need to enjoy it more and just like dial things back a bit.
- 11:31A hundred percent yeah I used
- 11:36to be more competitive but now I just really
- 11:39enjoy I mean and even taking it easy is not easy you know
- 11:41like you have to push a bike a lot of times the bike has
- 11:44bags you have to plan your nutrition you
- 11:48know like where you're gonna supply for food and
- 11:50for water but even though
- 11:54it's still a challenge it doesn't matter what speed you go it it
- 11:57i am really enjoying just you know quote-unquote stop and smelling the flowers
- 12:02sometimes literally yeah it's nice i was at the migration race i think three
- 12:09years ago and it was so fast and i don't think i was last you know maybe middle of the pack,
- 12:16but I really wanted to enjoy seeing all the animals, you know,
- 12:19like you're in the middle of the Masamara,
- 12:21when am I going to come back here? I don't know.
- 12:24I want to fully enjoy you know I want to make the money I
- 12:27pay to be there worth all the hours I have to
- 12:30finish yeah yeah that's
- 12:33special it's special the way the way the sport
- 12:36is going now and I think we don't have to focus on being the fastest and the
- 12:41best obviously there is that avenue if you want to chase that and there are
- 12:45a lot of young aspiring riders who want to go that route and there's nothing
- 12:48wrong with that but there's also other avenues and I think having these avenues
- 12:53we're going to get different kind of riders coming to the fore.
- 12:56And I think cycling is in a pretty special place at the moment that affords
- 13:00riders these opportunities.
- 13:02Yeah, yeah. You can be anything, you know, you can be the fastest,
- 13:06the strongest, or you can be the red lantern and have a great time or not even be on a race.
- 13:11So, of course, for myself, I want to be strong, but I want to be strong so I don't struggle.
- 13:17I just want to be able to be all day on my bike and still feel good.
- 13:20Yeah, exactly. Yeah, yeah.
- 13:23So someone like you that tests and reviews a lot of gear, what's the most exciting
- 13:31tech or innovation you have seen recently?
- 13:34Okay, I wouldn't say it's exciting. I'm probably going to be sort of drawn and
- 13:38courted by my colleagues for saying this, but it's something that I didn't realize
- 13:43the significant impact in terms of my riding.
- 13:46And I would say it's a move to wider tires and tubeless technology.
- 13:51So if we look back a decade, thinner tires and harder tires was always considered the fastest.
- 13:57Some riders still think this, but comfort and compliance is trumping this train of thought.
- 14:04It's been proven on rolling road tests, on the wind tunnel, and even athletes
- 14:09racing events like unbound gravel, Cape Epic, cross country,
- 14:15cyclocross, and even road.
- 14:16Everyone's embracing sort of this notion of wider tires and lower pressures.
- 14:22And the reason for this, a lot of people don't understand this,
- 14:26and the reason behind this is that the more the tire can deform over the surface
- 14:32and maintain a solid contact patch, the better the grip and the power transfer.
- 14:37This also improves the comfort. It prevents the tire from skipping across the
- 14:41surface, and ultimately, it's not going to slow you down as much as you think
- 14:48it's actually going to make you faster.
- 14:49So i think the more we can embrace and kind
- 14:52of get out of this mindset where everything has to be
- 14:55thinner and harder it's not it
- 14:58is not faster this is even i've even experienced
- 15:01this in time trialing because i do a lot of time trialing too
- 15:04in the united kingdom it's it's massive
- 15:07yeah coming from south africa time trialing wasn't big
- 15:10at all when i first moved here five years ago
- 15:13i just couldn't believe what was going on it's a huge culture like time
- 15:16trialing and and and yield climbing and what i
- 15:18found when i first started doing the time trialing i was
- 15:22using 23c to 25c tires now
- 15:25i'm on 28c which kind of sounds counterproductive
- 15:29counterintuitive but that's i'm going
- 15:32the fastest on thicker tires with lower
- 15:36tire pressures so that that is an innovation that
- 15:39is actually accessible to everyone and it's not expensive if
- 15:42you want to go faster you don't need the lightest bike you don't need the best
- 15:46shoes the best kit start on things like your contact patch which is a tire and
- 15:51you can just experiment work with wider tires work with lower pressures and
- 15:55eventually you're going to find a sweet spot for you and for your waist and
- 15:59you're going to go faster and you're going to thank me later.
- 16:03Wow i think that's really really good a piece of information because like you said it's affordable,
- 16:09it's reachable, anyone can do that, change it today.
- 16:14I thought it was more because,
- 16:18of thicker tires it won't
- 16:21make you slower but i didn't know he actually can make you
- 16:23faster yeah yeah exactly it's
- 16:27just about improving that comfort and if you
- 16:29think about it if you if you set up
- 16:32your gravel bike and you're running tubes even and
- 16:36your tires are too hard not only are
- 16:39you going to spin out or we will spin up
- 16:41a steep incline you're not going to have that purchase the tire isn't going
- 16:44to be doing what it's designed to do it's called
- 16:47traction it's called grip and you
- 16:50need to the only way you can enforce that is by finding a
- 16:53sweet spot tire pressure that works for you and tires
- 16:56are designed to increase that contact patch between
- 16:59the tire and the surface increasing friction and
- 17:03that's going to help with grip it's going to help with comfort and it's probably
- 17:06going to lessen some of the vibrations you get coming through your bike
- 17:08especially the people that are riding gravel who aren't possibly using a suspension
- 17:14fork up front your first line of suspension on any bike are your tires actually
- 17:19and then you can look moving into suspension etc but i reckon wider tires and
- 17:25lower tire pressures are the way to go.
- 17:28And i think i'm stating the obvious but the
- 17:31tire pressure can also depend on the
- 17:35cyclist's weight right because a lot of people come
- 17:37to me and say like oh what what's your tire pressure well i can
- 17:40tell you but we're different weight so
- 17:43we might not work for you the same tire pressure i.
- 17:46Mean there's a lot of online calculators i
- 17:49think zip has a very impressive online calculator which
- 17:53can get it's almost perfect for your weight but
- 17:56it's not a hard and safe rule you
- 17:58have to experiment a bit and you know
- 18:02something something riders often forget is that
- 18:05your tire pressures vary from front to back
- 18:07so i tend to run a softer tire pressure on the front because
- 18:11that is what's giving me my control and my grip and
- 18:15i'll have a slightly higher tire pressure at the rear because
- 18:18most of my weight is transferred at the rear so it's
- 18:21just about finding that balance and seeing what works for
- 18:24you i always recommend once
- 18:27you've found something that works for you try and try and
- 18:30map out a little route given that there's a forest
- 18:33around you or some kind of course and set a
- 18:36little base time of maybe over a one kilometer circuit and
- 18:40start with a harder tire pressure move your tire pressure slowly
- 18:43down let some air down after each run and just
- 18:46see what worked for you you'll be surprised like that control and
- 18:49comfort you get to dial in especially for the corners the faster
- 18:52you go around a corner the faster you're going to go pretty much so yeah and
- 18:57the tire pressure will i want to say obviously but i'm not sure change from
- 19:03gravel to termac yeah so you should adjust there as well i think termac you
- 19:10do a little bit more tire pressure yes.
- 19:14100%. And talking a little bit about your journey, you have competed in some
- 19:19endurance events yourself.
- 19:21What has been some of your most memorable experiences on the bike?
- 19:26Tell me a little bit more about your journey overall.
- 19:30Okay, so I've now done hundreds of races, probably hundreds, I'd say.
- 19:36And to give a little bit of context, when I first started, I wouldn't say I
- 19:40was horrendously unfit or overweight, but I wasn't cycling fit.
- 19:47I was around 85 kilograms. I'm now 61.
- 19:51So it was like a 20-odd kilogram difference.
- 19:57And that's just from the bike. I don't do any gym work.
- 20:02I just ride my bike seven days a week, 365 a year.
- 20:06Wow. And then I improved just by being exposed to a greater stimulus.
- 20:13So the harder the rides and the stronger the riders around me, the faster I got.
- 20:19I started on a coaching plan about eight years ago just to see what that was about.
- 20:25And over a few years, you kind of get to know what works for you and what doesn't
- 20:30work for you. So you don't really need to use that plan anymore.
- 20:33And I kind of have a good idea of what works for me and what doesn't work.
- 20:37But in terms of events that stand out for me, number one is the Cape Epic.
- 20:43It's an absolutely savage race.
- 20:46I've also done Outroute Alps, which was quite a hard road race.
- 20:52And I've also competed in a lot of cycling e-sports events, like on Zwift and my wish.
- 21:00I've done three world championships on that, UCI World Championships. Nice.
- 21:03Really really hard but all three all three of these races are hard and tough
- 21:09for different reasons the for the cape epic for argument's sake it's it's the
- 21:13culmination of the intense heats the terrain and the toll these two realities
- 21:18take on the body for eight days so you kind of.
- 21:23Sleeping in tents in a race village, the temperatures range from 35 degrees
- 21:28to 45 degrees Celsius. So it gets really hot out there.
- 21:32There's lots of sand. There's crazy thorns. There's wild animals.
- 21:37It's a strong battle with your mind.
- 21:41So you've got to be physically fit, but you've got to be mentally strong too.
- 21:46Because on paper, the stages look a lot easier than they are in reality.
- 21:51So you're looking at between 60 and 80 kilometers a day with 2,000 to 4,000
- 21:57meters of climbing on like unriders.
- 21:59On a mountain bike. This is not road race. If someone doesn't know what Cape
- 22:04Epic is, it's a massive mountain bike race in South Africa. Yeah.
- 22:08Yeah. They call it the Tour de France of mountain biking just to get a bit of
- 22:13content. And you do it as a pair as well, right?
- 22:16So you also have to work together with your team. So it's kind of,
- 22:20you need to manage your partner and you can only, you technically only as fast as your partner.
- 22:25So there's a, there's a crazy dynamic involved and it's, yeah,
- 22:29I've managed to do two of those.
- 22:30So it's very, very special race.
- 22:34Oat Roots I did in 2019 when I moved over to Europe from South Africa in the
- 22:39UK, it was something I always wanted to do and aspire to, to do it.
- 22:44It's very different. is very different to the racing in South Africa because
- 22:48the road race in South Africa, it's much shorter distances than in Europe.
- 22:53You're doing like between 18 and 100 kilometer races with not a lot of climbing.
- 22:58But Haute Root, it's between three and seven days and 120 Ks with just ridiculous
- 23:04climbing, like 4,000 meters of climbing.
- 23:06So it poses a different challenge. It's a beautiful race. It's hard for different reasons.
- 23:13I wouldn't say Oatroot's tougher than the Cape Epic or the Cape Epic's tougher
- 23:17than Oatroot they both have their pros and cons in terms of what the demands on the body.
- 23:24I loved both those races, and I'd love to go back to do them again.
- 23:27In terms of eSports, it's something I got into in 2017.
- 23:31I had a very serious crash on the bike where I went down in a Peloton.
- 23:38Oh, sorry to hear it. Oh, it was absolutely horrible.
- 23:42Usually in a race when I crash, I get up and I get on the bike straight away.
- 23:46And after the crash, I think we went down at about 40 to 45 kilometers per hour.
- 23:51I got back on my bike or tried to pick up my bike and I knew immediately something was wrong.
- 23:55And what had happened was I dislocated my elbow.
- 23:59So my two forearm bones were up into my bicep.
- 24:03So my arm just looked really weird and I couldn't straighten it. Oh my goodness.
- 24:08And I found out that I had actually fractured my radius as well on the same arm.
- 24:13And it was in a very remote area just outside Cape Town in South Africa.
- 24:17And I had to wait four hours for an ambulance out in the cold.
- 24:21Oh my god it was it was a
- 24:23horrible absolutely horrible accident but
- 24:27it kind of i was off i was i
- 24:30couldn't ride outside for a few months and were
- 24:33you alone or someone stopped and stayed with you my wife
- 24:36was doing the race too and she was in the ladies
- 24:39race and they started like a few minutes back
- 24:42and she said she she actually said she saw the crash unfold she said she just
- 24:47saw bicycles and men flying through the air and she saw me on the side of the
- 24:52road and she's like look you're more important to me than this bike race and
- 24:55she stayed with me try to kind of help me i just told her to switch off my car and.
- 25:03But i had a bike accident once and i thought it was so funny because i completely
- 25:07forgot about my bike and this guy came and he's patting my head and he's just like your bike is okay,
- 25:14I was like oh thanks I had forgotten completely about it At that point I didn't
- 25:20care either I've never experienced this much pain before in my life Because the paramedic on sight,
- 25:26That stabilized me, or what he thought was stabilizing me.
- 25:29And he asked me to kind of bend my arm up. So my arm was like dislocated and straight.
- 25:36And then he bent my arm, which caused all the bones to rub.
- 25:41That like dropped my heart rate. I nearly passed out.
- 25:45Eventually, when I got to the hospital and they needed to do x-rays,
- 25:48they needed to straighten my arm. So they had to straighten it. Again.
- 25:53I was swearing. i wasn't i wasn't the nicest person
- 25:56to be to be around but after that
- 25:59i discovered zwift that was
- 26:02in 2017 and i use that as
- 26:05like a rehabilitation tool but i didn't really
- 26:07get into the racing side seriously until
- 26:112020 with with lockdown etc and then
- 26:14things just went out of control if you want to
- 26:17call it in terms of my obsession with
- 26:20it i still use it as a training tool because it's so it's just
- 26:22so good it's a controlled environment you can hit
- 26:25your numbers yeah you don't have to worry about cars weather
- 26:29yeah yeah you still you're kind of still around the family so you're not losing
- 26:34too much time in that that that regard and it's efficient and quick and i joined
- 26:39a team in 2020 they wanted to start racing and we had to do performance testing and.
- 26:48Verification or whatever and that kind of ramped
- 26:51up and when we started getting better going into the pro-am races and
- 26:54when the uci cycling esports world champs
- 26:57were announced you could either qualify or your
- 27:01federation could select you i didn't
- 27:03make it through the qualifiers but i was selected by south africa
- 27:07they made me captain of the squad and
- 27:10that was in 2022 same thing happened in 2023
- 27:13and 2024 so i'm very much involved with
- 27:16that i'm the federation representative too
- 27:20so i'm just trying to educate riders
- 27:23trying to make sort of fairness and equality and kind
- 27:26of just showing people what they need to do if they want to race at the highest
- 27:29level it's really hard it's really hard racing it's some of the hardest stuff
- 27:33i've ever done you don't need bike handling skills so it's the power needed
- 27:36the power needed and just the the mental anxiety when leading up to a race because
- 27:42you're going to do like hype videos and weighing videos and you're going to
- 27:45validate all your equipment.
- 27:47It's really, really hard, but it's something I do enjoy. It's.
- 27:52I reckon it's a discipline on its own. Obviously, it's got some teething issues.
- 27:57It's still in its infancy and a couple of things they still need to sort out.
- 28:00But, yeah, in terms of races I've done, I'd say UCI Cycling Esports World Championships
- 28:08is up to heaven with the KPF in terms of the sheer pain involved.
- 28:13Yeah, yeah. I've seen it on, I think sometimes it's streamed on YouTube and
- 28:19it's really cool to watch.
- 28:21But yeah i think it requires a different level of power and also mental strength because,
- 28:29you are standing still whatever you are in your living room or a studio,
- 28:35you don't have the right i mean you have the writers virtually you can see them
- 28:39but it's just a different mind game yeah you don't have that external sort of
- 28:44stimulus you don't of people around you yeah tearing you or yeah yeah yeah it's
- 28:50yeah it's uh yeah it's something.
- 28:53That's mostly done in isolation although they have
- 28:56started bringing in live events and live venues which
- 28:59has kind of changed the sport and i think we're going to see more of that going
- 29:03forward but yeah it's a completely different completely different discipline
- 29:07there's a new challenge that i'm looking forward to though um in terms of slightly
- 29:11there's this cool gravel stage race that has been launched in South Africa.
- 29:16I don't know if you've heard of it. It's called Gravel Burn.
- 29:18Yeah. The Gravel Burn. Yes, I think the creators of Cape Epic created Gravel Burn. Yeah.
- 29:24I want to get to Gravel Burn. Yeah, it sounds amazing. I think it's... How many days?
- 29:29It's seven days. Seven, yeah. Seven days. 850 kilometers.
- 29:34Straight over seven days. For the pro riders, there's a $150,000 US dollar prize purse.
- 29:40And it's going through remote spectacular
- 29:43gravel terrain that i don't think anyone
- 29:46in europe and the rest of the world have any idea
- 29:49what what's out there you're going to get to see wild animals
- 29:53you're going to get to see rhino elephants giraffe buffalo
- 29:57magical magical yeah there's amazing campsites there's
- 30:00there's age group racing it's not a team it's
- 30:03not a team event so you don't have to ride as a partner just because
- 30:07because it's going to be high speed and you're going
- 30:09to be in a peloton racing like rubbing shoulders
- 30:12with riders i think the idea of perhaps
- 30:16having team aspect there could cause problems if you're looking back for your
- 30:20partner and someone in front of you slams on your brakes it's a it's a difference
- 30:24it's a completely different kettle of fish but i think this is something that's
- 30:28going to catch on so are you going i'm going yeah yeah i'm so tell us yeah,
- 30:34Oh, my gosh. I want to get an entry.
- 30:36It looks amazing. I have also a friend who is going.
- 30:42There's no bad day on a bicycle, usually, unless you crash, I guess.
- 30:47But one of my favorite...
- 30:51Writing and core memories are in
- 30:54africa i mean i loved like the migration
- 30:57race in kenya i did race around rwanda
- 31:00in rwanda i did some bike back in tanzania on my ironman days i did the ironman
- 31:06in south africa so it's just africa is truly truly special you're very familiar
- 31:12with the place yeah it's uh well it's so vast i feel like i don't know enough
- 31:16i really want more you You know,
- 31:19it's a very unique place and it's culturally so diverse.
- 31:25What you get to experience there, you can't, I mean, Europe is beautiful.
- 31:29It's beautiful for different reasons,
- 31:31but there's a raw kind of element to Africa. It's raw. It's rough.
- 31:37But it's beautiful. You don't get the same sunsets as you do in Africa.
- 31:43And it's just, yeah, there's a rawness that I really appreciate from that place.
- 31:48Yeah, I appreciate that too. Wow, I'm so jealous now. Gravel burn.
- 31:55That's your answer. Yeah. Is there anything else besides tire that you think
- 32:04it's breaking out in the market now that you think it's going to be a breakthrough?
- 32:12I mean there's there's a lot of train of thought around
- 32:15bringing suspension into gravel
- 32:18so whether that's in the seat post
- 32:22in the top tube into into
- 32:25the c-tube intersection or physically putting in
- 32:28a small 80 millimeter suspension for on
- 32:31on your bike to me i i think
- 32:34that is just a fad at the moment why not
- 32:37just ride a mountain bike if that's what you want exactly
- 32:41my thoughts yeah the whole idea
- 32:44about a gravel bike is taking that similar riding
- 32:47position and speed that you get on a road bike and
- 32:50being able to do that on a different surface and enjoying that
- 32:53off road whether whether you want to embrace the all
- 32:56road all road nature of it where you can just ride
- 32:59your bike on the road and if you want to take a different path
- 33:02home you can turn left and go through the forest so be it um yeah i think i
- 33:07think the frames have more comfort dialed into them and there's a lot more compliant
- 33:12than the bikes we were using just a few few years ago when gravel was still
- 33:17in its infancy and yeah i think for me the the the path forward is,
- 33:23tires other than that i mean.
- 33:28I think the way that they've improved or the brands have improved braking performance
- 33:33through disc brakes is phenomenal.
- 33:36What SRAM has done with the new red access, the brakes are just absolutely amazing.
- 33:43The modulation through those levers are unreal. I mean, you can powerfully brake
- 33:47in the drops or on the hoods.
- 33:51Couldn't really do that before, but there's just so much feel within the stopping
- 33:55power that you shouldn't have any issue. And I think they made the levers smaller
- 33:59as well, because before it was so big, like I'm not a big human, so it's hard to reach.
- 34:06Yeah, I mean, there are a lot of people out there who have an issue with SRAM in general.
- 34:12They say that they don't appreciate the shifting issues they have,
- 34:16or the hood design was too chunky.
- 34:19But SRAM works phenomenally well when it's set up by an expert.
- 34:24Don't tinker with that on your own and
- 34:27expect it to work get it set up by an expert you're not going
- 34:29to drop a chain and yes perhaps the previous
- 34:33generation red force and
- 34:36rival had slightly chunkier hoods but
- 34:39that's that's been addressed especially on red it's a beautiful shape it's a
- 34:44lovely interface to rest your hands on now the lever just is superb and they
- 34:48changed the piston position within the lever that's why now you can brake from
- 34:53the tops and also in the drops which is pretty cool.
- 34:58I'm glad they're taking the feedback and making changes,
- 35:03it's quite powerful I tried the other day, I don't remember which one it was
- 35:08but I had to rent a bike on a work trip and I used Ram for the first time I'm
- 35:14like, oh, actually I like it Yeah.
- 35:17Sometimes we get stuck on what we know.
- 35:21Yeah, I mean, I'm a firm believer that we're in a place in time where there's
- 35:27no such thing as a rubbish product.
- 35:30Everything actually is at a good level and everything is good.
- 35:33It just comes down to personal preference now.
- 35:36Shaman is fantastic. It looks good. It's understated. It works.
- 35:40It's got a good reputation.
- 35:41But SRAM is also on the same level. their drive trains are possibly their group
- 35:47sets are possibly more attractive in terms of the aesthetics the way they bring
- 35:51in contrasting shades of silver metallic surfaces just yeah.
- 35:56Ornate details it looks really good and for certain
- 36:00bikes i would perhaps lean on pairing
- 36:03it with the shram group set just just for aesthetic merit
- 36:07whereas a different bike i want something more
- 36:10understated so i'm going to go shimano or campagnolo so
- 36:13it's it just depends it's a good point yeah they're all
- 36:16pretty much on the same level of course
- 36:20there's going to be small little hiccups and
- 36:23fine-tuning issues across all of those group sets but
- 36:26at the end of the day it comes down to preference
- 36:29and perhaps just something
- 36:33that's been used within your family or your friends for years
- 36:36so if your yeah if your father was using shimano he's going
- 36:39to tell you i only use shimano you need to use shimano this is junk that is
- 36:43junk you need to try things i i always i always say to do everyone don't don't
- 36:51knock it before you rock it or or try before you buy you know just yeah before
- 36:55you have something negative to say about something.
- 36:58Try it out. See if it works for you. Because the chances are you didn't give it a chance.
- 37:03Yeah. And if you didn't try, how can you say bad things about it? You just don't know.
- 37:07Of course, I'm in a fortunate position because I get to try absolutely everything.
- 37:13But then at the same time, the advice that I give, people can trust it.
- 37:18Because I've got a lot of stuff I'm testing.
- 37:21My house is underbikes. You don't want to know what things look like on the other side.
- 37:27Pretty rough. And I was going to ask, what are you riding then?
- 37:30I've got a lot of bikes at the moment.
- 37:32So the bike I'm testing, I was actually going to mention at the end when we
- 37:38go through some of the tech.
- 37:40But it's a Cube Lightning. Okay.
- 37:43I may as well chat about it now and then we can chat. Yeah.
- 37:47So it's called a Cube Lightning C68X SLX. It's a bit of a mouthful.
- 37:53So it's a Cube Lightning C68X SLX red axis. There's a lot to take. Wow, yes.
- 37:59And it's a brand that I think has been living in the shadows for a long time.
- 38:05It's a German brand. It's not something that you associate with performance
- 38:09or even cycling in general, which is a bit of a shame because it's top-notch stuff.
- 38:15I think they are a little bit more in spotlight in triathlon.
- 38:22I mean, they are used in the World Tour, in Tamarche. Yeah.
- 38:28They've won some stages with Bimini Gourmet. So it's out there.
- 38:33It's just it's not getting the recognition it deserves.
- 38:37I think current riders who have been with a particular brand for a long time,
- 38:43they tend to stay with that brand.
- 38:45And then riders coming up, your younger riders, they want aspirational stuff.
- 38:50So they want specialized Cannondale, Trek, Canyon. And they don't want the cube,
- 38:56but they need to get the cube.
- 38:58And the reason for that is the value for money is absolutely unbelievable.
- 39:04Okay, so this particular bike, it's top of the range.
- 39:08It's 6.4 kilograms. I mean, it's lighter than the UCI limit.
- 39:14Obviously, you can make it heavier if you need to, but it's 7,500 pounds.
- 39:19So you could buy two of these bikes For a Specialized S-Works SLA Or Cannondale
- 39:25Super 6 Lab 71 You can buy two of those bikes,
- 39:28and it's it's it's fully loaded it's got absolutely
- 39:31everything super light it's the climbing version
- 39:35so you do get an aero version of this bike but this is the climbing version
- 39:38so it's super light it's there's so
- 39:41many color ways to choose from and if
- 39:44even the wheels they've got a brand it's called newman wheels the.
- 39:47Valves are hidden within within the rim
- 39:50walls so there's aero valves you
- 39:53need a special tool to inflate them so there's there's crazy little
- 39:57bits and pieces and small details within this bike but that
- 40:00is that's a special bike i'm busy reviewing it now it's
- 40:03going to be that review is going to be live on on road road.cc
- 40:07probably in the next two weeks i'm just
- 40:09finishing okay yeah but i mean it's the the
- 40:13guys that i ride with it's open their eyes they they
- 40:17cannot believe the value for money you can get and it's just i
- 40:20mean it's just cannot believe people would rather spend
- 40:22double the money and go for a brand when
- 40:26they're going to have just as much fun if not better fun on
- 40:29the cube lightning what what a great brand honestly really
- 40:33good well that's good to know and what is the advantage of having
- 40:36the oh my god now it's blinking oh
- 40:39it's a valve yeah i think there might
- 40:42be i mean is that an aero canes yeah
- 40:46i think it's an aero advantage we
- 40:49probably need to get that tested in a wind tunnel just to
- 40:52just to see the actual reasoning behind that but it was yeah when the bike first
- 40:58arrived i i was i wanted to pump the pump the tires up and i couldn't find the
- 41:02valve so i was like what is going on here and then yeah so it's got a little
- 41:06cover over the valve that you can lift it was a little like a rubber grommet.
- 41:11And even if you don't have the special adapter you can you
- 41:15can if you take your bicycle pump and you just remove the head you can take
- 41:18the rubber hose and just squeeze it over okay it's just it's just a another
- 41:22talking point really i mean you yeah you know you're on the the right coffee
- 41:27stop and you're talking about bikes and it's almost like where are your valves
- 41:30you know it's something yeah something to talk about it's one of those things.
- 41:35Yeah, very cool. Yeah, I think people should look more into,
- 41:38you know, what can you get for your money.
- 41:41But again, it's so hard when you don't understand.
- 41:44But people are spending a lot of money on big brands, which are wonderful.
- 41:49I used to have an S-Works and I loved it. But it's just like,
- 41:52like you said, it's so much money that you're paying for the brand.
- 41:56And you could get something equal value. It is a good bike. But,
- 42:00I mean, if you're now spending 50% less, think about all the other things you can actually get.
- 42:07You can get new shoes, new cycling computers, new kit, new pedals.
- 42:11You can look into getting the wider tires I spoke about. There's all sorts of things, yeah.
- 42:17Speaking of which, there's also something I've just got on test.
- 42:20I had to wait a long time for these because these were custom-made for me. Wow.
- 42:26The listeners probably won't see this, but I wanted to show you. Oh, yeah, the Nibble.
- 42:31Yeah, Nibble XSeed Ultimate Glide Road Shoes. These are a sexy shoe,
- 42:37really sexy shoe. Very, very expensive.
- 42:40Handmade, right? Yeah, yeah. 465 pounds. I think it's around 500 euros.
- 42:45So it's not pocket change.
- 42:48Yeah. But yeah, I think it's really cool with the BOA LI2 dials.
- 42:53You can get it in three colors. It comes in white with gold boas,
- 42:57white with silver boas, or the black with the gold.
- 43:01I thought about the black because I like a black road shoe.
- 43:06In England, I don't know why, maybe one of the listeners can comment on this,
- 43:12but regardless of the weather, white shoes, white socks, white helmets.
- 43:17That's what they're like. Same here in Gidrona. It's like….
- 43:20You can only wear white shoes and white socks. And, you know, I'm a black sheep.
- 43:23I do have the black because I'm like, I don't want to get, you know,
- 43:26especially on the gravel. I don't want to get all dirty.
- 43:29Exactly. You're going to ruin your socks. I mean, you can use your socks and
- 43:32then they're trashed. That's it.
- 43:34I'm waiting for the right weather to take these shoes off for the proper test.
- 43:39But I mean, it's for me, when I look at shoes, because it's one of three contact
- 43:45points with the bike. So you've got your bum with the saddle,
- 43:50you've got your hands, and then you've got your feet.
- 43:52I think feet are the most important because that's powerful.
- 43:55You're transferring the power, yeah.
- 43:57Exactly. So there are three aspects when it comes to the shoe for me personally, and it's comfort.
- 44:02Without comfort, the shoe is useless. You can throw it in the trash.
- 44:05Then there's performance. And
- 44:07this comes through the fit, the retention system, and the sole stiffness.
- 44:13And then it's the weight of the shoe. So that's the sum of all the parts put together.
- 44:18So in this case, with this shoe, I think it balances everything,
- 44:22all three attributes well together.
- 44:24So it's a comfortable performance shoe and 190 grams, just to give you an idea.
- 44:30It's like, wow, weighs absolutely nothing. Nothing. Air.
- 44:34Yeah. That's beautiful. I mean, it's got a carbon monocoque sort of sole chassis,
- 44:40as they call it. Replaceable heel pad.
- 44:44Yes, you can race in this. I don't think I'll race in this just because knowing
- 44:48my luck, I'm going to end up on the ground again and I'll trash my shoes.
- 44:52So I'll put these through. It's gorgeous.
- 44:56Yeah. I will put these through the ring and do a proper test,
- 44:58but these will be for special days. I don't want to mess these ones up.
- 45:03Yeah. And I would love to hear more about it once you test it,
- 45:07if it's worth every penny that it costs. Yeah. Yeah, of course.
- 45:10Of course. And then there's something else that arrived for testing,
- 45:13which has been quite polarizing, not just among our tech team.
- 45:19Cyclists as a whole and it's the wahoo element
- 45:22ace yes tell me about
- 45:25which is quite a big boy for for scale
- 45:28that's a wahoo element rome wow it's much bigger and then here's here's an iphone
- 45:36so it just shows you the sign it's quite a it's big and it's heavy right but
- 45:41there's a lot more to this computer than meets the eye and there's a lot more to it than those two,
- 45:48attributes i think cycling has become too obsessed on performance and weight savings,
- 45:54and why who has pretty much given the middle finger
- 45:57to this because they think this is what
- 46:01cyclists need particularly i think your adventure bikepacking cyclists.
- 46:04Right so they've created a product for everyone
- 46:08you can use it if you if you're a professional or
- 46:11someone who enjoys the performance side of cycling i don't
- 46:15think those cyclists will just because just because of
- 46:17the weight it's i think it's around 200 grams
- 46:21210 grams something around there so it's not it's not light
- 46:25it's not light but it's not massively heavy it's not
- 46:28massively heavy um the the
- 46:31screen is really good it's crisp and clear so if you
- 46:34someone who needs really clear navigational prompts
- 46:38this is the device for you it's really good yeah
- 46:41the brightness i think is not
- 46:44on par with your garmin
- 46:48sort of 1040s or your hammerhead caroose
- 46:51but it isn't something that's going shouldn't shouldn't
- 46:54put you off the product it's compatible with all
- 46:57existing wahoo mounts but the
- 47:00slight issue is that if you
- 47:02want to fit this on your existing wahoo mount on your
- 47:05bike it's not going to fit because oh because the
- 47:08length yeah it's really really long so you either need to use the supplied mount
- 47:14which is not going to work with every bar because some people have integrated
- 47:19bar stem setups but you can get things aftermarket raceway sent me something
- 47:25that was It's custom-made. It's slightly longer.
- 47:27The support is really good. It distributes, I don't know what they've done,
- 47:31but it distributes the weight evenly over that mount.
- 47:34So even if you push on it, there's not much movement.
- 47:37It's nice and sleek, and it kind of houses the product quite well.
- 47:43This has a little party trick.
- 47:46It's got a bell function, which the new Garmin has too.
- 47:49But if you're riding around densely populated areas, you just hold the screen in and it's pretty loud.
- 47:56Oh, I would love that. I have a little bell on my bike, which my husband's left at me.
- 48:02But I'm like, I can't, you know, because we live in Old Town in Girona.
- 48:06There's so many people and so many tourists. They're like not looking where they're going.
- 48:10And I'm like, so I think now this is a future I didn't know about the Ace.
- 48:15So maybe I do need it because I'm also terrible with the navigation.
- 48:19I have the roam, which is great and it works.
- 48:23But what I heard, correct me if I'm wrong, is that on the ACE,
- 48:28you can actually touch screen and move the map around, zoom in, zoom out.
- 48:32That'll help me because I have, you know, if you tell me go north,
- 48:37east, southwest, I'm like, no clue.
- 48:40I'm clueless with directions. So it's good to be able to zoom in and zoom out and see where I am.
- 48:47So it works exactly like your element Roam.
- 48:50So it's got physical buttons too that work exactly as it would on your Roam,
- 48:53just as that touchscreen element too.
- 48:57So if you do need to zoom in, move around, or just want to use your finger for
- 49:00some reason, you can do that.
- 49:03So I mentioned that the mapping is as good as any other Wahoo device.
- 49:08I really like the Wahoo mapping, but this particular device comes with something
- 49:12called a wind sensor, which has been all the talk of the town.
- 49:16It's not an aero sensor like many thought it was when information on this device was first leaked,
- 49:23but rather it's an airspeed monitor for you to use so you can compare that to
- 49:28the ground speed and you can improve your positioning within a pack if you really want to.
- 49:35So it works. I've used it a few times It does give you an indication Where the
- 49:42wind is coming from And where you can be more efficient But I think it's something
- 49:46That's going to be improved over time,
- 49:48It's cool now Is it going to help me now?
- 49:51Probably not But I think it's something There's a lot of merit within that.
- 49:56Yeah, it's a cool feature If you are that geek or that precise And really want
- 50:02to be You know, any gain is a gain It sounds like a really cool feature.
- 50:07Yeah. I mean, it's a really good... I mean, it's not the biggest device that has ever been made.
- 50:13I don't know if you ever saw the original Hammerhead Karoo, the first one.
- 50:19No, just pictures. I never had got my hands on one.
- 50:23That thing was huge, absolutely huge. So this isn't the biggest device ever made.
- 50:29I'm of the opinion that something like this is probably handy for...
- 50:35Handier than a smaller screen. I know people go on about weight, but sometimes,
- 50:41I like having a lot of metrics on my screen. I have different screens with different metrics.
- 50:46And sometimes the screen is too small to accommodate them.
- 50:50Whereas this, I can have a whole lot. And it's going to be crystal clear.
- 50:55So for me, I'm enjoying it at the moment. And yeah, I mean, I do a road race with this on my bike.
- 51:02Especially if it's the cube, that's 6.4 kilograms. I mean.
- 51:05Exactly. So you compensate there. Yeah.
- 51:09Yeah. And the other thing I thought about, you know, I need reading glasses.
- 51:12So when I'm in my computer or looking at my phone, I need reading glasses.
- 51:16So of course on the bike, I cannot wear reading glasses because I need to look where I'm going.
- 51:22So I was thinking maybe the ACE, because it's a little bit bigger.
- 51:25If I don't have as much data there, it might be easier for me to read.
- 51:31I, on the Rome, I can read everything, but it's because I know where the data
- 51:37is, you know, I know where my, you know, but if I am to read the legend of each
- 51:43power, not power output,
- 51:45like at each data, I wouldn't know what it is, but because,
- 51:49yeah, because I'm familiar with my setup, I know, so I don't need,
- 51:52but I think the ACE would be good for me and anyone that has struggles, you know, to read.
- 52:01I mean, it's not cheap. It's kind of up there for your common 1040s.
- 52:06In British pounds, it's like 550.
- 52:09So I assume it's going to be, what, 580 euros, maybe even close to 600. 600, yeah.
- 52:16It's quite an investment, but it's something that's going to last.
- 52:18And they're always rolling out different firmware updates, and they're pretty on top of it.
- 52:23I think it's going to be pretty good, to be honest. I like it a lot. Yeah.
- 52:28Awesome. So glad we talked about this because, yeah, I mean,
- 52:32when I had a problem with Wahoo before that I was on an endurance,
- 52:38it wasn't a race, it was like a rally, and my Wahoo just wouldn't turn on.
- 52:43And I freaked out. I mean, this can happen, right?
- 52:47And then that's when I thought about the hammerhead. I was like,
- 52:49maybe I'll get the hammerhead. It's bigger, colorful, like the map, whatever.
- 52:54But then wahoo was wonderful when i told them they were like no worries we'll send you a new one,
- 53:00yeah so it's it's very good brand yeah
- 53:03it's it's that it's that level of after sales support
- 53:07that keeps people loyal to a brand you know
- 53:10yeah and mine was old like wasn't in the warranty or
- 53:13anything they didn't ask anything they're like here it is that just
- 53:16shows you the character of the brand and what they're willing to do to retain their
- 53:19customers which i think yeah it's volumes so yeah that's
- 53:23pretty cool there's something else i'm also testing it's
- 53:27more on sort of the indoor side of things so it's the
- 53:30zwift ride okay i know
- 53:32there are a lot of people out there who think you know
- 53:35there's no point having something dedicated for
- 53:39your indoor setup you know it's not going to use a kicker bike
- 53:42or a watt bike or whatever they're just going to bolt their bike on
- 53:45the trainer and that's that and i'm fine with that i i do that too but i've
- 53:50also got this on test and it's kind of opened my eyes to the other side so here
- 53:55you've got a bike dedicated to zwift so it's only compatible with zwift you
- 54:00can buy it as a frame only that's about 800 pounds,
- 54:04or as a bundle so it comes as the frame it comes with the frame and a wahoo
- 54:09kicker call and that boosts the price up to 1200 pounds around there.
- 54:15So what's cool about it is it's heavy, of course. I mean, that's going to happen.
- 54:22But that weight makes it really sturdy. So it's a solid platform from which to pedal.
- 54:28It's made from a really hard-wearing material.
- 54:32So it's not going to get destroyed by sweat and corrosion.
- 54:35I've had some terrible things happen to my handlebar bolts and parts of my bike
- 54:40just from sweat over time.
- 54:41You don't realize that it's proper corrosive. Yeah.
- 54:44Yeah so you if you
- 54:47buy the if you buy the zwift ride as a bike only
- 54:50it's only compatible with a certain amount of
- 54:53aftermarket trainers so it can be the wire kicker core the wire kicker b5 v6
- 54:59there's a couple of elite trainers too but to make it compatible you need to
- 55:03buy the zwift cog which is almost like a single speed cog that you fit onto
- 55:07the freehub and the bike just works so So it's essentially a single speed,
- 55:12but it's got virtual shifting in-game. So it's got the full range.
- 55:16Full range. It's got the Zwift Play controllers built in.
- 55:19So you can navigate through the game, get people right on, operate your power-ups.
- 55:25You can do everything from the controls. You don't need to lean onto your computer
- 55:29and press the space bar or whatever. You can race on it if you want.
- 55:34It is sturdy, but if you're a crazy sprinter with insane power,
- 55:38is going to kind of rock from side to side.
- 55:41So I think if you're an elite racer, you're probably better off with a kicker
- 55:47bike or your personal race bike on a smart trainer.
- 55:50But if you're a recreational cyclist, someone who enjoys to exercise,
- 55:54someone who's serious about cycling, I would go for the Zwift Ride.
- 55:57And what's nice about it is you can adjust it so you can have a setup for yourself,
- 56:04your husband, your child.
- 56:05Oh, wow. And you can move the handlebar reach, you can raise the stem, you can...
- 56:12Drop the saddle, increase the saddle. So in that regard, it's something that
- 56:18I think certain families who possibly struggle for space and they can't have too many setups.
- 56:24You can have one setup for the whole family and it works really well.
- 56:29Yeah, that's really cool.
- 56:31Also, you don't have to buy different trainers and also you don't have to be putting in your bike,
- 56:37taking off your bike and then put it on the wheel and then go for a ride and then take it off,
- 56:41put it back on the trainer plus the sweating factor
- 56:44that you mentioned i i would love something like that for
- 56:47my for my pain cave yeah there's there's
- 56:50a lot of people who don't mind taking the bike off the trainer putting
- 56:53it back on i don't have any problem with someone
- 56:56who does that i've i've done that for years and i'm
- 56:59someone who enjoys that kind of setup especially for the
- 57:02elite racing side of things but if yeah if you're
- 57:05if you're a family and you're in a smaller space than some other people and
- 57:08you want to maximize your space and you
- 57:11want the whole family to use the same setup i would
- 57:15go for that it works really well and yeah it's easy to wipe
- 57:18down and clean and it's just it's just something something different
- 57:21i think swift are leading the charge when it comes to these things i know some
- 57:25some can argue that it's possibly overpriced or they're just trying to lock
- 57:29people into their platform but most most of most of the riders out there are
- 57:34are using swift it's more of a sort of social community based platform and that's
- 57:41what most of us enjoy really yeah it's fun when you see you know a friend or
- 57:47you go on the same rides but you don't need to be in the same,
- 57:51room the same country and you.
- 57:55What's the problem of them wanting to lock in people in their platform?
- 57:59That's the business. That's what they should do.
- 58:03So, yeah. Yeah, so those are the things that have been very interesting and
- 58:09that have come through the doors.
- 58:10There's a lot more coming in the next weeks. And there's probably other things
- 58:14that I'm still busy testing that I can't talk about right now,
- 58:17which I will be able to in the coming weeks.
- 58:19So those are some special things, too.
- 58:22Great. I want to highlight a few of the things that we discussed now.
