Transcript
- 0:00Hi everybody, welcome back to the show.
- 0:02Today we're going to be delving into one of the most ambitious
- 0:05space missions ever undertaken. In less than 80 days, NASA and
- 0:11SpaceX will join forces to launch the Psyche spacecraft on
- 0:15a journey that spans 2.5 billion miles.
- 0:20Now this voyage aims to explore the mystery is of an asteroid
- 0:23nestled within the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter,
- 0:27known as 16 Psyche. This asteroid, unlike any other,
- 0:32is made-up largely of iron and nickel, leading to estimates of
- 0:36its worth reaching an incredible 10,000 quadrillion dollars.
- 0:42But monetary value aside, 16 Psyche presents an unparalleled
- 0:46opportunity for us to study a world that may closely resemble
- 0:50the iron core of Earth. Today, we're going to be diving
- 0:54deep into the fascinating details of this mission.
- 0:57Examining the tireless work of NASA and SpaceX as they prepare
- 1:00for this Monumentus launch. Will be discussing the
- 1:03technologies involved in exploring the scientific and
- 1:06potential. Will be discussing the
- 1:08technologies involved in exploring the scientific and
- 1:11potential economic implication. Our journey will take us from
- 1:15the Space Launch Complex 39, a site at Kennedy Space Center,
- 1:19all the way to the heart of the asteroid belt.
- 1:22We'll reveal how Psyche the spacecraft will utilize solar
- 1:25electric propulsion to traverse the vast cosmic expanse and how
- 1:29it will help scientists unlock the secrets of the metal rich
- 1:33asteroid Psyche over a 26 month research period.
- 1:37And we'll get right into that after this quick break from our
- 1:40sponsors. So stick with us.
- 1:42We'll be right back in under 80 days.
- 1:46History will be made as NASA. And SpaceX partnered to launch a
- 1:51solar powered spacecraft on a voyage that will span 2.5
- 1:55billion miles. This journey is into the heart
- 1:58of our solar system, and it'll propel humanity further into the
- 2:02cosmos than ever before to the main asteroid belt situated
- 2:06between Mars and Jupiter. Now what's the purpose of this
- 2:09mission, though? It's to lay bare the mysteries
- 2:12of an enigmatic asteroid designated 16 Psyche.
- 2:18The metallic composition of 16 Psyche, chiefly iron and nickel,
- 2:22has been the source of much speculation and excitement, and
- 2:26estimates pegged the potential worth of this asteroid at an
- 2:29astronomical 10,000 quadrillion dollars.
- 2:33That's a figure that could revolutionize economies and
- 2:35industry as we know them. But beyond the material riches
- 2:38lies an ever more significant treasure, a unique opportunity
- 2:42for planetary scientists to study an iron core that looks
- 2:46like. And could be like the center of
- 2:49our own Earth Now this mission will expand our understanding of
- 2:53these iron cores and may well unveil an entirely new class of
- 2:57metal worlds in our solar system.
- 3:00Now, NASA has recently provided an online update regarding the
- 3:03mission, revealing that a team of around 30 dedicated engineers
- 3:07and technicians working tirelessly to ready the
- 3:10spacecraft, dubbed Psyche, in accordance with its asteroid
- 3:15target. Now, as per the schedule, Psyche
- 3:17will be launched atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket blasting off
- 3:22from Space Complex 39 a Kennedy Space Center, Thursday, October
- 3:275th, 2023 at 10:38 AM Eastern Time.
- 3:32Now, this launch window remains open until Wednesday, October
- 3:3525th, 2023, offering multiple opportunities for a successful
- 3:39liftoff, although Falcon Heavy has been typically utilized to
- 3:43launch heavy satellites. Psyche marks its maiden
- 3:46interplanetary launch milestone for the vehicle.
- 3:49Our focus has shifted to safely completing the final mechanical
- 3:53closeout of the spacecraft and preparing the team for
- 3:56operations at Henry Stone, Psyche's project manager at
- 4:00NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, they
- 4:03said. We are counting down the days to
- 4:05the launch and following Earth's gravity escape, the Psyche
- 4:08spacecraft will utilize solar electric propulsion.
- 4:12To accomplish its six year journey to asteroid Psyche now
- 4:18asteroid Psyche, measuring approximately 173 miles at its
- 4:22widest point, presents an extraordinary opportunity to
- 4:25examine a metal rich celestial body.
- 4:28Scientists hypothesize that the asteroid might be a remnant core
- 4:32of a planetisimal in early planet's building block, and
- 4:35once Psyche reaches the asteroid, it'll spend no less
- 4:38than 26 months orbiting it. Gathering in valuable images and
- 4:42other data to illuminate its composition and its history.
- 4:45And before this can occur, though, the assembly, testing
- 4:48and launch operations phase needs to be completed by the
- 4:51team of engineers and technicians.
- 4:53And after wrapping up several weeks of functional testing of
- 4:56the science instruments and spacecraft hardware and
- 4:58software, the team is set to finalize the spacecraft
- 5:01preparations. Now these final stages include
- 5:04removing the remaining testing cables.
- 5:07Reinstalling previously removed exterior panels for
- 5:10accessibility and completing the thermal blanketing later this
- 5:14month, the team will integrate and test the deployment of the
- 5:17immense solar arrays. By mid August.
- 5:20The slow and careful progress of loading all 2392 pounds of
- 5:25propellant, the neutral gas xenon, will commence.
- 5:28Now. Louis Dominguez, the systems and
- 5:30electrical lead for assembly, test and launch operations
- 5:33express confidence in the progress made thus far stating.
- 5:36We are moving forward and we're confident that when we're on the
- 5:40pad, we'll be ready to hit the button.
- 5:42The Psyche mission is a product of numerous collaborators.
- 5:46Arizona State University leads the endeavor.
- 5:49NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of
- 5:51Caltech in Pasadena, takes on the roles of overall management,
- 5:55system engineering, integration testing and mission operations.
- 5:59Max, our technologies in Palo Alto, CA supplied the high power
- 6:03solar electric propulsion spacecraft chassis.
- 6:06Now, the spacecraft will also carry a technology demonstration
- 6:08instrument, the Deep Space Optical Communications.
- 6:12This tool will be used to test high data rate laser
- 6:15communications that could potentially be employed by
- 6:18future NASA missions. Psyche is the 14th mission
- 6:22selected as part of NASA's Discovery program, overseen by
- 6:25the agency's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL,
- 6:29and as humanity edges closer to this groundbreaking launch.
- 6:33We're getting excited. Everyone's getting excited about
- 6:36it. It's going to be one of the most
- 6:38monumental launches in the history of humankind.
