- 0:17Speaker 1: Bird Girl. Once upon a time lived a king who
- 0:21Speaker 1: only had one son, and when this son grew up,
- 0:25Speaker 1: his father sent him to travel about the world in
- 0:28Speaker 1: order that he might find a maiden who would make
- 0:31Speaker 1: him a suitable wife. The king's son started on his
- 0:34Speaker 1: journey and traveled through the whole world without finding anywhere
- 0:37Speaker 1: a maiden whom he loved well enough to marry. Seeing
- 0:41Speaker 1: then that he had taken so much trouble, and had
- 0:43Speaker 1: spent so much time and money, and all to no purpose,
- 0:48Speaker 1: he resolved to kill himself. With this intention, he climbed
- 0:52Speaker 1: to the top of a high mountain that he might
- 0:54Speaker 1: throw himself from its summit, for he wished that even
- 0:57Speaker 1: his bones might never be found. Having read at the
- 1:00Speaker 1: top of the mountain, he saw a sharp rock jutting
- 1:03Speaker 1: out from the side of it, and was climbing up
- 1:05Speaker 1: to throw himself from it. When he heard a voice
- 1:08Speaker 1: behind him calling stop, stop, o man, stop, for the
- 1:12Speaker 1: sake of three hundred and sixty five which are in
- 1:15Speaker 1: the year. He looked back, and, seeing no one, he asked,
- 1:19Speaker 1: who are you they speak to me? Let me see you.
- 1:23Speaker 1: When you know how miserable I am, you will not
- 1:25Speaker 1: prevent my killing myself. He had scarcely said these words
- 1:30Speaker 1: when there appeared to be an old man, his hair
- 1:33Speaker 1: as white as woolf, who said, I know all about you.
- 1:37Speaker 1: But listen. Do you see that high hill? Yes? I do,
- 1:40Speaker 1: said the prince. And do you see the multitude of
- 1:43Speaker 1: marble blocks which are on it? Said the old man, Yes,
- 1:46Speaker 1: I do, rejoined the prince. Well, then continued the old man.
- 1:51Speaker 1: On the summit of that hill, there is an old
- 1:53Speaker 1: woman with golden hair, who sits night and day on
- 1:56Speaker 1: that very spot, and holds a bird in her bosom.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Whoever can't get this bird into his hands will be
- 2:02Speaker 1: the happiest man in all the world. But be careful.
- 2:05Speaker 1: If you are willing to try to get the bird,
- 2:08Speaker 1: you must take the old woman by her hair before
- 2:10Speaker 1: she sees you. If she sees you before you catch
- 2:13Speaker 1: her by her hair, you will be changed into a
- 2:15Speaker 1: stone on the spot. Thus it happened to all those
- 2:19Speaker 1: young men you see standing there, as if they were
- 2:22Speaker 1: marble blocks. When the King's son heard this, he thought,
- 2:27Speaker 1: it is all one to me whether I die here
- 2:31Speaker 1: or there. If I succeed, so much the better for me.
- 2:34Speaker 1: If I fail, I can but die as I had resolved.
- 2:38Speaker 1: So he went up the hill, and when he had
- 2:40Speaker 1: arrived near the old woman, he walked very cautiously towards her,
- 2:45Speaker 1: hoping to reach her unseen. For luckily, the old woman
- 2:48Speaker 1: was lying with her back towards him, sunning herself and
- 2:51Speaker 1: playing with the bird. When near enough, he sprang suddenly
- 2:55Speaker 1: and caught her by the hair. The old woman cried out,
- 2:58Speaker 1: so that the whole hill shook as with a great earthquake.
- 3:01Speaker 1: But the King's son held fast by her hair, and
- 3:04Speaker 1: when she found that she could not escape, she said,
- 3:08Speaker 1: what do you desire of me? He replied that you
- 3:11Speaker 1: should give me the bird in your bosom, and that
- 3:13Speaker 1: you called back to life these Christian souls. The old
- 3:17Speaker 1: woman consented and gave him the bird. Then from her
- 3:20Speaker 1: mouth she breathed a blue wind towards the men of stone,
- 3:24Speaker 1: and immediately they again became alive. The king's son, having
- 3:29Speaker 1: the bird in his hands, was so rejoiced that he
- 3:31Speaker 1: began to kiss it, and as he kissed it, the
- 3:34Speaker 1: bird was transformed into the most beautiful maiden. This girl,
- 3:38Speaker 1: the enchantress, had turned into a bird in order that
- 3:41Speaker 1: she might allure the young men to The girl pleased
- 3:45Speaker 1: the king's son exceedingly, and he took her with him
- 3:49Speaker 1: and prepared to return home. As he was going down
- 3:52Speaker 1: the hill, the girl gave him a stick and told
- 3:54Speaker 1: him the stick would do everything that he desire of it.
- 3:58Speaker 1: So the king's son struck with it once upon the rock,
- 4:01Speaker 1: and in a moment there came out a mass of
- 4:05Speaker 1: golden coin, of which they took plenty for use on
- 4:08Speaker 1: their journey. As they were traveling, they came to a
- 4:12Speaker 1: great river and could find no place by which they
- 4:15Speaker 1: could pass over. So the king's son touched the surface
- 4:18Speaker 1: of the river with his stick, and the water divided
- 4:21Speaker 1: so that a dry path lay before them, and they
- 4:24Speaker 1: were able to cross over the river dry shod. A
- 4:28Speaker 1: little farther they came to a herd of wolves, and
- 4:30Speaker 1: the wolves attacked them and seemed about to tear them
- 4:33Speaker 1: to pieces, but the prince struck at them with his stick,
- 4:37Speaker 1: and one by one the wolves were turned into ants. Thus,
- 4:42Speaker 1: at length the king's son reached home safely with his beloved,
- 4:46Speaker 1: and they were shortly after married, and lived long and
- 4:48Speaker 1: happily together. End of Section seven of Serbian fairy Tales
