- 0:00SPEAKER_01: But when we were kids, you know, little kids were allowed to get a hold of an explosive.
- 0:05SPEAKER_01: And and so even just a pack of piccolo pizza was a walking time bomb.
- 0:09SPEAKER_01: And I'll never forget packing that thing full in a in a little container and setting that on fire and stepping back and thinking, oh, this is gonna be great.
- 0:18SPEAKER_01: And the explosion being so big that I was lucky it didn't blow the windows out.
- 0:23SPEAKER_01: And then to watch the wind take the mushroom cloud and throw it directly into Mrs.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: Johnson's house down the street, only to receive full blowback.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: Because what do they get?
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: Guess what happens when you fill an old lady's house full of smoke?
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: They call your mom.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she's got some questions, I would assume.
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and so my explosive history states that I am not to be working in that industry whatsoever.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: I learned it early.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: I didn't know the amount to put in, I'd never gauged the winds, I never looked at uh collateral damage, all of that stuff.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: So I'm glad there are professionals.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: It's the PW podcast, and we are here at the Stafford Hills Club, like usual, where I'm in the business suites, where work meets play is what they say.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: And really, it's 10 feet away from an amazing pool, and I can hear the people as soon as I open the second door.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: It's nice and soundproof in here.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: As soon as I open the second door, I can hear the excitement from the pool and the music and cold drinks.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: And you can you open one more door door, you can smell the burgers, Marcus.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: It's real nice and it's worth the time.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: Check it out for yourself, staffordhills.com.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: If you tell them that Drew sent you, you get half off your initiation.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: And it's also it's great even out of the summer months because the classes are amazing, the gym is great, and downstairs they've got the cafe, the fireplace that has the windows out to the indoor tennis facility.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: It's just real nice, and it's a place where I even see these ladies down there playing board games, and I don't know exactly what game they're playing, but I kind of want to dip in there and be like, anyone for some little guess who, or anyone want to Yahtzee with me?
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Go over there and work them at Snakes and Ladders, yeah?
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I think they have more advanced games and they would likely crush me, but it's nice to see that sense of community right there.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: Come see them today and check it all out at staffordhills.com.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: Marcus Bridges, that's the other voice you hear in here with me every day as we talk about the things that affect the Pacific Northwest, um, both the good, the bad, and the ugly.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: We try to stay out of the weeds too much, but last episode was spent uh laughing at everyone thinking you and I are a big propaganda machine, so we'll try and get away from that today, and maybe uh people will get mad enough for us to get back into it next week.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: Uh, first things first, I wanted to talk to you about the Centennial Mills warehouse.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: I don't know if you saw this video.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: It was going viral.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: Now that's the giant warehouse that caught fire.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: This is an ancient building in the Pearl District that caught fire a little over a week ago and burned the entire inside out, but the walls of the building still remained in this water tower up on top of the building.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: And I'm sure you saw it, it was extremely dangerous.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: So dangerous, in fact, that when they finally put the fire out, that they couldn't even run the trains through town because they feared that the vibrations would cause the water tower to fall and collapse the building onto the tracks and onto the people down below, which is pretty sketchy, right?
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: So did you happen to see what they did about that water tower yesterday?
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: I did, man, and I enjoyed it.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: I actually tuned into a Facebook live feed and sat there and waited for it.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: I don't know what it is about a good demolition, Drew, but it just mmm mm-mm, I just eat it up.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: I like a good demo too.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: Um now they make you wait too long in the pre-done videos.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: Now, if it's live, I can sit and wait for it.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: But whenever it's I'm sitting and waiting, like I always fast forward it and then I see dust, and I'm like, oh, back it up, back it up, back it up, back it up.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: But I have to see it.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: Once I've waited, it would it is totally inappropriate for me to leave without seeing rubble.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: And that's what we needed to see here.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: And so what they did was they put a little detonation pack on each corner of that thing and then popped it and dropped it into the center of the building, and quite frankly, did a pretty good job.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they really did.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: I was amazed to see how well it went down.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Uh, I did laugh a little bit because in the video you can faintly hear somebody's car alarm going off, which I that to me just is funny, you know.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Like, I did you think to maybe move your car out of the demolition zone if you didn't?
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry about your windows.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: Um, but I I never knew Drew as a young kid when you watch these videos, you know, you see him collapse a hotel or something.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: You never know how much real actually like science and and thought goes into this stuff.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: And to be able to blow something up precisely has always kind of blown my mind a little bit because you're right, that water tower dropped right into the guts of the building, and it was, I mean, it was perfect.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: I don't know if it could have gone any better.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: You know, you and I would have blown two legs off that would have rolled over the side and right down into that giant, beautiful tree at the bottom.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'll put that thing on the train tracks, even if I'm doing it right.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: I promise you I'm gonna mess something up here.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't need any vibrations from a train.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: I can fail this demo.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: I mean, you should have seen me making firework bombs as a kid.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: It just absolutely never went to plan.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: That's exactly what I was gonna touch on.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: You know how many eyebrows I singed off?
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: Uh I I'm the kid that has a Roman candle that fires out the back end and hits me right in the crotch.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: It wouldn't go well if it was me, but good job to the people that did it.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: And as a triple dad, I will say this by prefacing that please do not make homemade bombs.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: But when we were kids, you know, little kids were allowed to get a hold of an explosive.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: And and so even just a pack of piccolo pizza was a walking time bomb.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: And I'll never forget packing that thing full in a in a little container and setting that on fire and stepping back and thinking, oh, this is gonna be great.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: And the explosion being so big that I was lucky it didn't blow the windows out, and then to watch the wind take the mushroom cloud and throw it directly into Mrs.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: Johnson's house down the street, only to receive full blowback.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: Because what do they get?
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: Guess what happens when you fill an old lady's house full of smoke?
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: They call your mom.
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she's got some questions, I would assume.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: And so my explosive history states that I am not to be working in that industry whatsoever.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: I learned it early.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: I didn't know the amount to put in, I'd never gauged the winds, I never looked at uh collateral damage, all of that stuff.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: So I'm glad there are professionals.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: But you know what's nuts, Marcus?
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: What's that?
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: Oh, sorry, were you gonna say something first?
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: I was just gonna say to all you demolitions experts out there, understand that Drew and I look up to you with the whimsy of a child looking at an airplane pilot.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: We tried, we had aspirations, we almost lost digits, and we were rubber stamped as not approved.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: So great job out there, and it's really fun to watch you guys work.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: It is, and I don't know.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: So, what would you prefer to be before we move to this next thing?
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: Would you prefer to be the guy who launches fireworks or the guy who drops buildings?
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, the guy that launches fireworks is cool, but he's cool one day of the year, and the rest of that you don't know who he is.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: Whereas a hotel dropper, that guy can just, you know, he can jet set around the country.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: You need something gone in Nashville, I'm your guy.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: You got something going on that looks ugly in Austin, let's wipe it off the face of the planet.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: I think I want to be demo guy.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: I like demo guy.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: Demo guy has to work a little bit harder, yeah, and he's held a little bit more accountable.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: Like when I was watching the fireworks over Fourth of July, at one point they they totally screwed it up, and four of them went like all into each other really close to the ground.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: And I remember thinking, man, that's sketchy.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: But because it's just like a flash in the pan, it's fine.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: If you blow up the Mirage in Las Vegas and that thing tilts to the side and buffaloes into, you know, another casino, you just there's just a lot more liability.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: But, you know, given the state that we live in, the region that we live in here in the Great Pacific Northwest, your your standard run-of-the-mill firework guy on the 4th of July could, you know, burn down Civic Stadium in Eugene, uh, because that was done with a couple of ground blooms, if you remember correctly.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: And you never know, you might start a forest fire, but are they going to hold you liable for it?
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: Or are are you just like all the rest of the drunk people on Fourth of July that gets a pass because America?
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: I like to think that those kids who use the fireworks to burn down Civic Stadium, one of the most historic minor league baseball stadiums, the home of the Eugene Emeralds, where we spent many, many, many, many, many days with Dollar Beers down there.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: I'd like to think that they're still in military school, even though they're like 25 now.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: It helps me to sleep at night because I st that still frustrates me.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: As the M's continue to find look for their new home, uh have they even figured that out yet?
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: I mean, I know I'm jumping around a little bit, but uh, they're gonna get kicked out of the U of O soon because you're required to have your own minor league stadium.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: Something's got to give there.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, nothing's given yet, man.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: Another sports franchise that we might see leave the Pacific Northwest, and not for uh uh just a Herculean effort from the team and the people involved with the team and all the supporters.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: Um, but again, uh there's a bit of a city standing in our way.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: And uh you you pull a random hundred people around Eugene, and it seems about like 50 of them would say no and 50 of them would say yes right now.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: I I this is something I should have looked up, but I didn't even think about that I was gonna bring up Civic Stadium, but uh still a bit of an issue there, and and not sure if we're gonna get to keep them.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: So sad stuff.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: But yeah, you know, I don't like cruel and unusual punishment like any American.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: I think that the punishment should fit the crime, and this is why I think that those two gentlemen that burned down Civic Stadium should have gotten a life sentence of litter patrol.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: Make them clean up the garbage for the rest of their days.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: You took a historic gym away from the city and uh yeah, drew tons of dollar beer nights.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: Um, a celebrity softball game that I remember that I played in down there, uh remember like it was yesterday, made a hell of a made a hell of a web gym catch in left field.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: Still think about it and talk about it at most dinner parties.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: I mean, it was a great place to be.
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: That's amazing.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: And I have some crazy memories there.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: I actually uh the radio station that both you and I worked for, originally their stations were located just down the street from there.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: So I would drive the station vehicle up there hours before the game and like hand out stickers and do live call-ins to the radio because that's really riveting stuff.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: Um, but it also was like that was me earning my stripes.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: That was the grind that led to my entire career where all that time spent out there, the hot dog eating contest, the MCing events before the game and and during the seventh inning stretch, those types of things, those will stay with me forever.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: I remember being like, I have to leave Dollar Beers for 45 minutes to go do this thing on the field and then come right back along the remember the beers were along the foul line down the first base path, yep.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: Right there at the end.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: And I think a lot of people have great memories of that in this old wooden stadium that clearly went up in about six seconds once you set it on fire.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: But those types of things, they're fleeting and we're not gonna get them back.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: So I hope that the few types of things that remain like that can be preserved, but it's kind of becoming a thing of the past.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and if we can't preserve them, at least give us the entertainment of blowing them up.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: Like put a little bit of pomp and circumstance around it.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: Don't just blow it up or don't just burn it down uh with a ground bloom flower, you know, because like you said, this was a historic building we're talking about in Portland.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: It'd been there for a very long time, if I'm not mistaken.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: And kudos to the guys that constructed it.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: I fire gutted that place.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: Those walls were still standing strong, Drew.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: They really were.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: And it's the same thing with this centennial mill down in the Pearl District, which is still under fire investigation, Marcus.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: Oh, they think maybe somebody said it?
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there is a good possibility that they did.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: Well, there's just too much on the line.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: Think about the value of the dirt that's below that old eyesore of a mill.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: Now there was a time where that thing was the hustle and bustle of the city.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: But those days are long gone.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: And so we've and I don't know that somebody said it.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: It could have been an accident, even if it was set by a human, but there's also rumors, Marcus, that there are human remains inside.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: Not just rumors, before people pop off in the comments, that's what Oregon Live is reporting.
- 13:22SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 13:22SPEAKER_01: That so you gotta go to their comment section, not old money and me here, okay?
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you could go ahead and yell at them all you want.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: Um, but they are saying that there is rumor to be human remains inside there, which is strange to me that if they believe that to be true, as we speak, they've been knocking the walls down.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: They've already blown the tower, but now they're using an excavator to push the walls down.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: I just don't I don't know if now's the time to do that, or maybe they've gr gathered what they can gather and there was it was just too hot of a fire.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you never know.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: Uh one thing that I hear doesn't aid police investigations very much is uh pushing a building on top of what they're investigating, but you hope that they're finished by the time that that thing goes down because uh human remains, I mean, you could have that that could mean all sorts of different things, and you would definitely want to get to the bottom of it.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: We don't want people engaging in arson, but we definitely don't want people engaging in murder and arson uh or or accidentally killing themselves while they're trying to burn down a building.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: All of that's bad.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: So uh I will definitely look forward to hearing a little bit more about what exactly they think went on down there.
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: Because if a fire starts, you know, it's a huge building with many floors.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: So there's one of those situations where somebody could have been homeless and had camped out in there.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: They had a little spot and then they just didn't know and couldn't get out, or somebody accidentally started it.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: Um if you look down into Northwest 23rd and 22nd, where Elephants is a is a restaurant here that has locations all over.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: They had a beautiful place there and a fire burnt out the whole building, but it turned out to be done by a homeless lady who was trying to use a lighter to look into a garbage can to see if there was any food in there.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: Now that part is sad to me, obviously, that somebody would have be at that point in their life, but it's also like, okay, well, you used a lighter, like there's no other light source, and then you drop the lighter and it started to fire and the whole thing.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: The reason I bring that up is it can be you can do something that's deemed stupidity and it can still be an accident.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, a hundred percent.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: And tragic accident at that, of course.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: You never want to see anybody get hurt, you don't want to see people lose property, um, but accidents happen, man.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: And and you know what?
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: There's another thing.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: Like we talked about uh giving people just a little bit of grace and a little bit of of space in the last podcast when we were getting blown up in the comments.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: Uh, do remember that honest mistakes uh befall me every single day.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: I I might be the most mistake-prone person you know, Drew.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: And uh you got to give people the benefit of the doubt sometimes.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: And I hate that about it, but you you really do.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: And until the police come through with their investigation and actually say anything to the publications that are going to be asking the questions, we probably won't know.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: And it's gonna be a while uh before, but that sucks to hear what happened uh both to that homeless lady and to elephants, which by the way, I did not know that that was a place.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: And if that was the name of a strip club franchise in Portland, I would say spot on name too.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: I love the name, could put it on anything toy store, uh restaurant, you know, bar and grill.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: Good on elephants and this club you speak of both have great sandwiches.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: We're gonna take a quick break.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: We're gonna come back and we will pivot to the fact that the AP poll is out for the college football season and the Oregon Ducks, the highest rank they have ever achieved.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: The PW podcast is brought to you by a group of amazing people and companies.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: I am so prideful of the people I get to work with on this program and this weekend with my health concerns.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: That was no exception.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: Personal messages from the man who runs Stafford Hills Club, just an incredible human, Evan, checking on me.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: And it's part of the reason why this place is rated the best health and wellness facility in the Portland area.
- 17:27SPEAKER_01: I was laid up at a hospital less than a mile from here, and they were doing nothing but caring about me.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: It's a sense of community down here.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: You gotta check it out.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: You've got to see them when you get a chance.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: Staffordhills.com.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: Tell them Drew sent you for half off your initiation.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: It's so much more than a health and wellness facility.
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: It's a family down here at Stafford Hills.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: Same goes for my people over at Motosport Hillsboro, where I'm always talking about how they can get you the easiest and best financing and how they work hard to get the job done, but also compassionate people as well.
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: The owner Scott messaging me, telling me to get well soon, worrying not about business, but about his relationships with a human being.
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: That's what I'm talking about with these sponsorships.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: And right now, you can get the ultimate deal down there.
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: The Gas Gas eAssist Mountain Bike, the G Light Trail 2.0 e-bike is now just$21.99 at Motosport Hillsborough.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: That's up to$3,000 off MSRP, where they're always taking care of you.
- 18:37SPEAKER_01: Check them out today at Motosporthillsboro.com.
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: And finally, my people, Bruce is the leader over there, but his whole staff's so incredible at Axiom Plumbing, Sewer, and Septic, where they take care of business, and they will make sure they take care of you.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: 10% off if you say that I sent you.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: And you could also get$500 off a water heater where they take care of their people.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: And this is why I work with the people that I do.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: Anything to do with water and waste, they got you at Axiom.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: And remember, it's not private equity.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: This is a homegrown boy.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: Bruce is my favorite in the business, so check him out today, axiompdx.com.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: I don't know if you saw this, Marcus, um, but the Seattle Seahawks in the news today as they're trying to bolster their roster coming into the season.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: I can't believe we're just a blink away from the beginning of not just college, but also pro football, you know, preseason underway.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: It's tough for me to get into.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: Um, because you know me, I want to have a little DraftKings going, I want a little action, I want some red zone, all of that going.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: But it is nice to have it at least on in the background.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: I feel like it helps with my blood pressure a little bit, just that you know that the months of greatness are on the way.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and uh you start to get the reaction from the wife as you like tune into the third quarter of a preseason game, and you see them walk through the room and do a double take, and they see this isn't a replay, this is a live football game, and it starts to cascade.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: And um, I my wife happens to like football.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: She's not going to the Oregon Games with me this year.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: It's the first year that I'm season ticket holder solo.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: But she's trying to make more money for the household because you know it's like I told you, I come from that new money and there's none of it.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: So we need her working some Saturdays and we made that decision.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: But I I see her look out of the corner of her eye and wonder how many weeks is it until I see this grown man spend eight and a half hours on the couch and not move and not long.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: And I think it's something where it doesn't matter how much they love you.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: Um I'll preface with that.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: Uh, that support will waver.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: Um, it's the same thing with my wife.
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: She is the best before the season.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: She's even the best at a game, but she's super supportive of my football obsession and addiction.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: And then we get a couple of weeks in and the light in her eyes start to fade a little bit.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: Like when you start relay, because we're talking about seven hours of uninterrupted football every single Sunday.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: That's a lot.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: And it's just it's a lot to swallow.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: It's so much, Drew.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: And you add to that that we are both dyed in the wool duck fans, and that means that you're eating up.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: Well, in my case, it's a full Saturday because that tailgate is six hours long, and that's only because they won't let us go out there seven hours before kickoff.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: Um, and then you got a three, four-hour game on top of it.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: I'm I lose most weekends in the fall, and I'm more than happy to do so.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: And um, thank God I found a woman that can live with that.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: Know that it's only four months or so out of the year, but man, I lose a lot of days and a lot of time, and uh just is what it is.
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: I can't get enough of the stuff.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: I don't care what teams we're talking about, I don't care what it is, it's just football's back.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: I mean, you opened this mentioning the Seattle Seahawks, and I didn't squirm and run away.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: So obviously, I'm chomping at the bit here, Drew.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you're ready for any football.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: And when we get into the ducks here in a bit, I do want to circle back on you doing a tailgate all by yourself because I know how daunting that can be.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: Uh, but before we get to that, I wanted to talk to you about the Seahawks who are planning to sign quarterback Terrian Arnold.
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: Did you hear about this?
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: Now, if you don't, for those who don't know who he is, this is a situation that's gonna take a while for them to add him to the team because Arnold is currently facing eight felony charges, including kidnapping and robbery.
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: He was arrested in June after turning himself in and released on the the following week.
- 22:47SPEAKER_01: Uh he was released by the Detroit Lions, and it turns out like somebody had stolen from him, or that's what he believed, and they basically went and strong armed it back.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: Ah, the old OJ Simpson, huh?
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, which we know what happened to OJ, but this and I don't know if the Seahawks have insight into the fact that this is gonna get dropped or this is gonna get taken down.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: No, I always think it's a little strange.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: I feel I always feel like the charge should be less if it's your things.
- 23:18SPEAKER_01: You know, if it involves your items that they already took from you, not saying it's cool to rob anyone, to use weapons, to use violence.
- 23:27SPEAKER_01: It's not the way.
- 23:28SPEAKER_01: Use the law enforcement, go the proper channels.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: But even with OJ, a guy that I thought should be incarcerated for the rest of his life, I still thought he got wronged in Vegas when he went to go take his own Heisman gear back.
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think it's about what you do when you go take it back.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, it it reminds me of a story when I was a kid.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: I was I was heading up to the lake to go wakeboarding and my wakeboard blew out of the boat.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: Bad, bad packing job.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: I totally admit that, but I didn't realize it until we'd gotten up to the boat dock and we looked in the boat.
- 24:01SPEAKER_00: There was no wakeboard.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: We turned around, we started looking for it.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: I got a phone call.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: Hey, I saw somebody picking up a wakeboard on the side of the highway, and they headed up to the campground.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: And so, what did we do?
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: I loaded up all the able-bodied buddies that I had, and we're gonna go up there to this campground.
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: We're gonna get my board back.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: It it was somebody found a wakeboard on the side of the road.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: They picked it up.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: Like there was no reason for us to be all huffy and puffy.
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: They didn't commit a crime or anything like that.
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: And I'm fortunate that uh that you know, my two cents kind of leveled out before we got up there.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: And I walked up and I just told the guy, hey man, that blew out of my boat.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: That's been my board.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: I was a graduation present from my parents.
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: Can I have it back?
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: And he handed it back.
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: It was that simple.
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: Um, so you know, maybe just think through these things before you kick a door in and put a gun in somebody's face and say, give me back my sports memorabilia.
- 24:50SPEAKER_00: Um, it's not worth somebody's life, and it's definitely not worth you cooling your heels in the clink for however long they're gonna give you on this one.
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, to give you insight, um, Arnold went a little well, is accused of going a little bit harder than that, orchestrating a kidnapping, kidnapping and beating of three men who prosecutors believe he wrongly suspected of stealing a hundred thousand dollars in cash from him, along with luxury watches and bags.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: I've always said this too about when it comes to when somebody has stolen from you, be very careful about who you accuse and make sure that you know that you're correct.
- 25:29SPEAKER_01: Because there's nothing that makes you look like more of a dumbass than when you come at someone and then you find out that you're wrong.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: And and I can agree with you saying if it's your stuff and you're going to get it back, maybe a little bit lesser sentence.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: However, if you kidnap and beat loud three people that had nothing to do with it, I don't think they're gonna take it easy on you.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: They're not gonna pull any punches.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: In fact, they might throw the book at you.
- 25:52SPEAKER_00: So another point that you made that's very interesting to me, what do the Seahawks know here?
- 25:57SPEAKER_00: What is it that they know about this that nobody else knows?
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: Because you just signed the dude to a contract, and we know NFL players aren't cheap.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: It doesn't matter where they are on that roster.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: You're paying them hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars to be there, and you want a guy that can be there.
- 26:13SPEAKER_00: The most important uh available or the most important ability is availability, they say, Drew.
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, hard to play when you're a ward of the state.
- 26:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I am waiting to hear more details.
- 26:24SPEAKER_01: Now, the story does say that they are they are on the verge of signing, so he hasn't actually penned a paper it yet, but if they're on the verge, they must know, and here's the sinister part is there evidence to the contrary, or is there a payout on the way for those involved to keep them from actually spilling the beans in court?
- 26:46SPEAKER_01: Because how often does this stuff get all the way to the finish line and then all of a sudden it's like skirt?
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: And uh all of a sudden a witness is unavailable, or a witness is someone we can't find during trial because they went to Cabo with their payout instead and they're going lip sealed.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it'll be interesting to see it play out, man.
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: Um, I I, you know, again, I ask, do you want these type of people on your team?
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: Uh do you want a guy that you're going to be paying that much money that's capable of orchestrating a kidnapping and a beating, uh, regardless if the people deserved it or not.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: That doesn't even play into it.
- 27:22SPEAKER_00: Kidnapping is a very serious charge, federal, if I'm not mistaken.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: So you got to ask yourself that question.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: But hey, I wouldn't put it past the Seahawks to sign somebody like that.
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't put it past that franchise to have a whole team of those people.
- 27:35SPEAKER_00: But that's just me and my 49er uh jersey talking.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: Of course it is.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: But here, all right, here, take football out of it.
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: If somebody, if this situation happened to you, right, if an NFL player came up to you, threw you in the back of a car, beat your ass, and you know, scared the crap out of you, but you weren't so hurt that you were had any permanent damage.
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: And they came to you with a checkbook and they were like, hey man, sorry about all that.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: And they're like, How much is it gonna cost?
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: Are you accepting a check to shut it down?
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: What does that check look like?
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: Or are you just saying, sorry, man, I'm taking a bad guy off the street?
- 28:15SPEAKER_00: I am a man of conviction, Drew.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: Um, but that conviction, like many other things, does have a price eventually when you start tacking enough zeros onto it.
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: And I'm gonna say, look, this is this is the response you gave when you lost$100,000.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: That's a lot of money.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna need$100,000 for every time one of your lackeys contacted me with their fist or their foot.
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: And how who knows?
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: How loud did they beat me?
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: This could be up into the millions of dollars if they really, you know, went to town on me.
- 28:46SPEAKER_00: Uh, if they just kneecapped me and maybe pistol whipped me, then maybe you gotta ask for a little bit more.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: But uh, I don't know.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: I think it's gonna be, for me, I'm one of those people who's like, I'd never want to hold a grudge, but just like everybody, sometimes it's really hard not to hold a grudge.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: What does my grudge look like after this one?
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: Am I walking with a limp now?
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: Am I 50 cent after this whole thing?
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: You know?
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: And it really comes down to that is are there lasting effects?
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: But I'll be honest, I've had my ass beat.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: I've been beaten by strangers in the street who group beat me and I had no say in it, right?
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: You it doesn't matter if you were Thor, you were going to lose this fight, and that hurts so bad, but I recovered from it.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: If you if you did that to me, I think that, you know, and this'll prove that I maybe I'm not a Nepo baby after all.
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: I'm taking that check.
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: If I'm gonna make a full recovery, I'm taking that check.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: But I like I you're gonna pay for it.
- 29:41SPEAKER_01: You're gonna remember my name.
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: You're gonna remember what you wrote on that checkbook.
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: It's gonna cost you a million dollars to shut it down.
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: And then I'm go away and I'm never gonna call you back, and I'm never gonna worry about and I'll sign a thing that says my medical bills are mine, but for a million dollars, you change my life forever.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:01SPEAKER_01: And, you know, I just think that now I wouldn't be very happy with you or your lackeys for beating me up over something I didn't do, but I think I'm taking that check.
- 30:10SPEAKER_00: I mean, you have to think about this from the perpetrator's standpoint too.
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: How much is it worth to you to keep your NFL career?
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: Because if we decide to take this thing to trial and all my comments go public about how this whole thing went down, this might make you look even worse than just saying you're facing a kidnapping and assault charge.
- 30:31SPEAKER_00: Uh, this could make you look like a really, really bad guy and make nobody in the NFL or any other professional football league give you a shot again.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: So as you put those two things on the scale and sort of compare them, I'm sure he's probably willing to write a pretty big check to the people that uh that he beat loud in the in the back of a car wherever it was, because you you put a lot of work into being an NFL player.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: Nobody just rolls out of bed and becomes an NFL player.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: So there's there's a lot to this, and uh, I will be very interested to see where it goes, but I think I'm with you, Drew.
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: You you put enough zeros on the end of that check, you and I can have a chat.
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: And I know the leverage we have in that argument, just like you said.
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: It's okay, you can give me the million dollars off of your multimillion dollar check, or we go to trial and you're already screwed because we all know you did this and you get no more millions.
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: Prison, no millions, or some millions.
- 31:25SPEAKER_01: You make the call.
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: And that right there, I promise you, if I am playing as a cornerback in the NFL, I'm telling my representation to pull out the book.
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: It's time to pay.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: Make the check out to Drew Old Money Titan.
- 31:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that and I I also would go out on a limb and say, uh, hopefully I wouldn't haul off and whoop somebody without thinking it thoroughly through, because that's a very expensive situation.
- 31:50SPEAKER_01: Now, finally, we we kind of ran running out of time here, but um the Oregon Ducks are coming in at their highest ranking of all time here, Marcus, in the Associated Press poll.
- 32:02SPEAKER_01: Now, last week we talked about the coaches poll that came out that had the Ducks right up there as well, but now the Associated Press is here.
- 32:09SPEAKER_01: And why don't you give us the top 10?
- 32:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, let's walk through it.
- 32:13SPEAKER_00: Uh, coming in at number one with 40 first place votes, the Ohio State Buckeyes.
- 32:18SPEAKER_00: Um, 40 of those votes.
- 32:20SPEAKER_00: That's a lot of first place votes.
- 32:22SPEAKER_00: As we walk through this, you'll kind of hear the other teams that got votes, and uh not very many for any other team.
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: Uh, of course, Oregon coming in at number two, you already mentioned that.
- 32:31SPEAKER_00: 14 first place votes and the second most.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: Uh, zero first place votes for number three, Georgia, which is, I think, a little bit eye-popping, but you got to look back at the history.
- 32:42SPEAKER_00: We're talking three years since the the SEC has sniffed a national title.
- 32:47SPEAKER_00: So uh are we seeing that reflected in these numbers?
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: Number four, Notre Dame, they took down six first place votes, which is actually fourth most.
- 32:56SPEAKER_00: Uh Texas coming in at number one.
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: Real quick, I just want to mention about Notre Dame important because when you don't have a conference, you want to start high and stay high.
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: You fall too far back, you can't be found.
- 33:06SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: Saw them get we've seen them get burnt by it many times.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: Um, actually going all the way back to the BCS when they ended up playing Oregon State in a Fiesta Bowl, and oh yeah, the Beavers just ran them out of the house in that game.
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: Uh, but I think arguably one of the games that you could have said, hey, maybe the Beavers should have been in that national title game instead of whoever it was that played that year.
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: So always interesting stuff when we're talking about a team without a conference, Drew.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 33:33SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: Number five, Texas.
- 33:36SPEAKER_00: Uh looking at uh a really good roster there in uh in Texas, but can they make it happen?
- 33:42SPEAKER_00: No first place votes for the Longhorns.
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: Here might be the most interesting thing, Drew, that happened in this poll.
- 33:48SPEAKER_00: Defending champion, Indiana, and their coach, the cigarette, coming in at number six and probably feeling a little bit of disrespect.
- 33:56SPEAKER_00: Now, they did get the third most first place votes.
- 34:00SPEAKER_00: And what that means, Drew, is that a lot of people probably had these guys ranked lower than six in these polls, which I I know that's a this is the AP poll.
- 34:10SPEAKER_00: This is supposed to be the most informed journalists and people that follow the sport.
- 34:14SPEAKER_00: Um, were you not watching last year?
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: It was just, I mean, it they didn't even get touched, they didn't get challenged for most of the year.
- 34:23SPEAKER_00: And even when they did get challenged, it wasn't that much of a challenge.
- 34:26SPEAKER_00: I think Indiana should be higher than six, just my two cents, Drew.
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't think that um, well, first of all, I don't know exactly how decimated the roster is top to bottom for people who moved on and graduated.
- 34:38SPEAKER_01: Um, but Mendoza is such a huge part of this that without him, there's a lot of question marks.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: I think those first place votes, some of those are just the ding-dongs.
- 34:49SPEAKER_01: They're the homers who say, oh, well, they won last year.
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: Now they're a blue blood.
- 34:54SPEAKER_01: They're not, they have not earned that status as of yet.
- 34:57SPEAKER_01: This is brand new money if we're talking about it that way, because Indiana's a basketball school until last year.
- 35:04SPEAKER_01: So I kind of have to see it to believe it, but with Signetti, I don't put anything past him.
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: Don't want to play him.
- 35:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, don't want to see that guy.
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: Unfortunately, the Ducks don't have to this year until the postseason.
- 35:16SPEAKER_00: Uh coming in at number seven, we've got the counterpart of Indiana in the national title game last year.
- 35:21SPEAKER_00: That's the Miami Hurricanes.
- 35:23SPEAKER_00: Of course, coached by uh former Oregon Duck head coach Mario Cristobal.
- 35:27SPEAKER_00: He's got a hell of a roster out there in Miami.
- 35:29SPEAKER_00: Uh, just makes you wonder if Miami gets tested enough during the season uh to actually make it through.
- 35:36SPEAKER_00: But they did it last year in pretty impressive fashion.
- 35:39SPEAKER_00: So a little surprised to see him drop to seven, but again, they've got some holes that they need to fill on that roster.
- 35:44SPEAKER_00: Uh coming in at number eight, Texas AM, I feel like Always a Bridesmade, never a bride with the top ten in Texas AM.
- 35:51SPEAKER_00: We always see them up here because they spend so much money on their roster.
- 35:54SPEAKER_00: They bring in so many big names.
- 35:56SPEAKER_00: They've just never had a coach that can bring it all together up to this point.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: Uh not surprised to see them, but uh uh little surprised to see these guys sitting where they are because I think there's an argument for ranking them higher and ranking them lower.
- 36:11SPEAKER_00: That's old miss.
- 36:12SPEAKER_00: Um, really impressive stuff after Kiffin jumped ship last year and they were able to get into the playoff and even win a game.
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: Um, are they better than what they were playing at the end of last year because they lost their coach?
- 36:26SPEAKER_00: Is their coach going to take so much away from them that they're not going to be able to rise to the level that they found last year?
- 36:32SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 36:33SPEAKER_00: Olmis interesting at number nine.
- 36:35SPEAKER_00: And uh rounding out our top 10, Drew, we've got another SEC school in the Oklahoma Sooners.
- 36:41SPEAKER_00: Um, and I will tell you, man, these numbers from like six on down to 10, when you look at the total aggregate score that these teams got, Indiana sitting at 1440, and that's at number six.
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: Number 10 is sitting at 1047.
- 36:56SPEAKER_00: So only about 400 points separating these schools could have been with just a few people changing their minds and switching this up.
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: That you see this whole bottom half of this top 10 shuffle up.
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: So fun stuff, man.
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: It always makes me my mouth water this time of year.
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: Uh, just can't wait to see this stuff play out on the field.
- 37:14SPEAKER_00: Because as we say, yes, this is why you don't just roll the helmets out on the field.
- 37:17SPEAKER_00: You got to play the games.
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: And things are sure to change, and somebody will sneak up there at Texas Tech or something else to shake things up later on in the season.
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: Uh, and we'll have to get into later um your tailgating situation this year, now that you're riding solo.
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: But before we go, if you're looking for something fun to do this weekend, Marcus is going to be playing music live.
- 37:40SPEAKER_01: Where can they find you?
- 37:42SPEAKER_00: We're gonna be down at Happy Hours on River Road.
- 37:45SPEAKER_00: Uh, we are playing a punk rock and ska show.
- 37:48SPEAKER_00: Uh, come down and check it out.
- 37:49SPEAKER_00: I believe the door's open for that thing at 7 p.m.
- 37:52SPEAKER_00: We're calling it the ska punk rager.
- 37:54SPEAKER_00: We'll be playing with Ludacrous Speed, Lando, and Cotter.
- 37:57SPEAKER_00: Uh, and my band Livewire Summer gonna be bringing you all of your favorite pop punk and rock covers.
- 38:03SPEAKER_00: I'm talking Blink 182, Green Day, Fallout Boy Sum 41.
- 38:08SPEAKER_00: You name it, we'll play it.
- 38:09SPEAKER_00: Hell, we might even take requests.
- 38:11SPEAKER_00: And since it's sort of a nostalgia thing, Drew, we're gonna have a free bowl of wristbands for you.
- 38:16SPEAKER_00: You know the old sweatbands you saw everybody wearing it with tour.
- 38:19SPEAKER_00: Uh, come up and get a wristband, party along with us, sing along with us, gonna be a lot of fun, and you're gonna be able to catch LimeWire Summer uh all throughout Eugene.
- 38:28SPEAKER_00: We got another show coming up September 19th after the Portland State game.
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: It's actually the day after.
