- 0:00Have you ever had one of those doctor's appointments where you
- 0:02walk out thinking, I have no idea what just happened?
- 0:06Yeah, well, me too. I'd sit across my neurologist,
- 0:10nodding politely like a bobble head, trying to look like I
- 0:13understood every word. Inside.
- 0:15I was thinking, dopamine pathway.
- 0:17What now? I'd get into the car and then
- 0:21someone would say, So what did the doctor have to say?
- 0:24And I'd go, good question. Well, that was my routine for
- 0:29years until one day I finally realized that it wasn't that I
- 0:33didn't understand Parkinson's, it was that I wasn't asking the
- 0:37right questions. And I want to share with you
- 0:40today those questions because they changed everything for me,
- 0:45not just how I talk to my doctor, but now how I live and
- 0:49stick with me till the very end. Because I'm going to share
- 0:51something from Carmen's Care Partner Corner that'll hit home
- 0:55for both care partners and for those of us living with
- 0:57Parkinson's. And trust me, you do not want to
- 1:01miss it. Welcome to Living with
- 1:04Parkinson's, The Good, the Bad, and the Reality.
- 1:08Real talk, real life, real community with Bryce Perry.
- 1:13Let's begin. Hey everyone, I'm Bryce and
- 1:17welcome back to Living with Parkinson's, The Good, the Bad,
- 1:20and The Reality. And if you're new here, this
- 1:23channel is all about the real talk, the stuff that nobody
- 1:26tells you about Parkinson's mixed with humor, stories, and
- 1:30hope. And to my loyal viewers and
- 1:32listeners, thank you so much. You're the reason why this
- 1:35community is growing into something that is way bigger
- 1:38than me. And if you haven't yet, hit that
- 1:41subscribe button so you don't miss what's coming next.
- 1:43Because together, we're not just talking about Parkinson's, we're
- 1:47changing how the world sees it. OK, let's dive into these three
- 1:52questions that nobody likes to ask or nobody is asking their
- 1:55doctor. And the first one is this.
- 1:58When the when you're at your doctor's office, you say, what
- 2:01does this mean to me specifically?
- 2:04Now this is the question that flipped my appointments upside
- 2:07down in a good way. You see, doctors talk in
- 2:10averages. They talk about most people.
- 2:13They talk about typical symptoms and common progression.
- 2:18Have you heard that before? Put that typical symptoms,
- 2:22common progression, you know, or most people in the comments
- 2:26right now. Let's see that you're not alone
- 2:28in that. But here's the truth.
- 2:30Parkinson's doesn't do typical. I remember sitting in an
- 2:34appointment early on and the doctor was explaining something
- 2:38about motor fluctuations. I nodded the whole time.
- 2:41I smiled like I understood. And then I went home and I
- 2:44Googled it and I thought, I don't even think I'm
- 2:47fluctuating. I'm just flatlining.
- 2:50The next visit, I tried something different.
- 2:53When he finished this long explanation, I said OK, but what
- 2:57does that mean for me specifically?
- 3:01Everything changed. He stopped typing, He turned
- 3:04toward me, and for the first time he explained things in a
- 3:08way that made sense for me and my body, me and my schedule, me
- 3:13and my day-to-day life. And it wasn't about averages
- 3:17anymore. It was about me, and I realized
- 3:20that question doesn't just belong in the doctor's office,
- 3:24it belongs everywhere. When I read new Parkinson's
- 3:27research now, I always ask this What does this mean for me?
- 3:31When someone online says they're trying a new supplement or
- 3:34therapy, I ask what does that mean for me?
- 3:37Because no two of us are the same.
- 3:39We're all snowflakes. We're beautiful, unique, and
- 3:42sometimes falling apart at the seams.
- 3:45Well, the moment you stop comparing your journey to
- 3:48someone else's journey and start asking, what does this mean for
- 3:52me? That's when you start owning
- 3:54your story instead of letting Parkinson's write it for you.
- 3:59If you ever walked out on an appointment more confused than
- 4:02when you went in, drop a comment that says hashtag for me because
- 4:08I want to know how many of us, how many of us have been there.
- 4:13And trust me, you're not alone. You watch the hashtag for me as
- 4:16I hit this page. OK, question #2 here we go.
- 4:22How will I know when it's time to adjust my medication?
- 4:26Now this one is huge and it is what?
- 4:29It's one that most of us don't think to ask until we're already
- 4:33struggling. So we're already thinking about.
- 4:35I wonder if or you start Googling or watching these,
- 4:38watching podcasts, trying to figure out if it's your turn, if
- 4:40you should change your meds. See, there's an invisible line
- 4:45between I'm doing fine and something's not right.
- 4:49And most of us cross it without realizing it.
- 4:52For me, it wasn't a tremor that gave it away.
- 4:55It was somebody saying, you're moving slower than usual today.
- 4:59And I'd always say, of course, no, no, no, I'm fine.
- 5:01They'd say, Bryce, you're cutting your toast slower than
- 5:06grandma. And that's when I realized that
- 5:09my timing, it's starting to slip.
- 5:11My meds were wearing off sooner. And but because it happened
- 5:14gradually, you know, I didn't notice it right at 1st.
- 5:18And when I finally brought it up to my neurologist, I asked how
- 5:21will I know when it's time to adjust?
- 5:23He told me the signs. Well, price increase, stiffness
- 5:27in stiffness, shorter on times, changes in speech, changes in
- 5:32energy. Huh.
- 5:34Well, I wish I would have asked that in the very beginning so
- 5:37that when I started noticing these signs, I would have
- 5:41noticed the signs, not when it was already happening.
- 5:44So that's why I say it's so important that you have to have
- 5:48these questions in your back pocket right at the very
- 5:51beginning. When will I know it's time to
- 5:54change my meds? And do I leave that on the very
- 5:58first visit? Is that like he tells me that
- 6:00and I wait for it? No.
- 6:02Every time I go in, I say here's where I'm at today.
- 6:06This is what I'm going through today.
- 6:08When will I know? When will I know?
- 6:10Because I want to be ahead of the game, not behind it.
- 6:12Now if that's you, you want to be ahead of the game, just put.
- 6:14Ahead in the comments, 'cause I want to be ahead and that's when
- 6:17I started tracking everything. I now I track it and I track it
- 6:21every time. And you know what?
- 6:23I have a big surprise coming, and I'm building a Track my Meds
- 6:29hashtag challenge because I'm not.
- 6:31It's not just about taking pills, it's about noticing
- 6:34patterns, knowing when your body's whispering that
- 6:36something's changing before it starts shouting.
- 6:39And here's the thing, that idea goes beyond medication.
- 6:43In life, we all need to know when it's time to adjust, when
- 6:46it's time to slow down, when it's time to push forward, when
- 6:49it's time to change something that's not working anymore.
- 6:52And that's not a weakness, it's awareness.
- 6:56So if you've ever walked out on an appointment more confused
- 6:59than when you went in, drop a comment that says hashtag for me
- 7:02because I want to know how many of us have been there?
- 7:07OK, now that leads us into question #2 this is a big one.
- 7:10And this is one that again, many people don't ask.
- 7:13And I've, I've asked a lot of MD, movement disorder
- 7:16specialist, and a lot of neurologist.
- 7:18I said, how many times do people ask you this question?
- 7:20And it's very few and far between.
- 7:22So let's change that. Let's start changing that today.
- 7:25Here it is, ready every appointment.
- 7:28How will I know when it's time to adjust my medication?
- 7:32This one is huge, and it's one of the it's one that most of us
- 7:36don't think to ask until we're already struggling.
- 7:39You know, there's this invisible line between I'm doing fine and
- 7:43something's not right. And most of us cross it without
- 7:45even realizing it. You know, for me, it wasn't a
- 7:48tremor that gave it away. It was somebody saying to me,
- 7:51you're moving slower than usual today.
- 7:54And I'd say, no, I'm fine. And they'd say, Bryce, you're
- 7:57cutting your toast slower than my grandma.
- 8:00Then I realized my timing had started to slip.
- 8:03My meds were wearing off sooner, but because it happened so
- 8:06gradually, I didn't notice. When I finally brought it up to
- 8:11my neurologist, I asked how will I know when it's time to adjust?
- 8:15And he told me the signs increase stiffness, shorter on
- 8:19times, changes in speech, changes in energy.
- 8:24And that's when I started tracking it, started tracking my
- 8:27meds all the time. And I tracked them every time
- 8:30now. And I've got a little surprise
- 8:33coming over in the middle of building right now, a track my
- 8:38meds challenge. Because it's not just about
- 8:40tracking pills. It's about noticing patterns,
- 8:43knowing when your body's whispering that something's
- 8:46changing before it starts shouting.
- 8:48Now, here's the thing. That idea goes beyond
- 8:51medication. In life, we all need to know
- 8:54when it's time to adjust, when it's time to slow down, or when
- 8:58it's time to push forward. When it's time to change
- 9:01something that's not working anymore.
- 9:03And that's not a weakness, it's an awareness.
- 9:06So if you're part of our hashtag Track My Meds crew, type that
- 9:10hashtag in the comments right now.
- 9:12And if you haven't started yet, now is the time.
- 9:15Because tracking your meds is really about tracking yourself.
- 9:19It really is. And again, I'll have some more
- 9:21information coming up about that right away.
- 9:23I hope to be launching this challenge.
- 9:26And maybe, just maybe I'd have a tracker for you to start using.
- 9:30And I'm talking like maybe next episode.
- 9:32Just hang in there, stay tuned. It's coming, it's coming.
- 9:36All right, let's move on to question #3 and here it is.
- 9:39This is the question that none of us like to ask or don't ask.
- 9:42What can I be doing between appointments to slow my
- 9:45progression now? This is the one that changes
- 9:49your mindset. For years, I thought my doctor's
- 9:51appointments were like a reset button.
- 9:53I'd go in, I'd report what was happening, I'd get a new
- 9:56prescription or a tweak, and I'd wait for the next visit.
- 9:59But between appointments, I was just surviving.
- 10:03Until one day, I finally asked that right question.
- 10:05What can I do between appointments?
- 10:09And my doctor said a lot. He talked about exercise.
- 10:13He talked about sleep. He talked about stress,
- 10:15connections, and learning, all the things that help slow
- 10:19progression. And that's when it clicked.
- 10:22My real work happens between appointments, not at the
- 10:26appointments. So now I move every day, even
- 10:29when I don't want to. And no, I don't.
- 10:31I'm not out running marathons. Some days my big workout is just
- 10:35making it up the stairs without swearing.
- 10:37And when and when he says exercise, I said define
- 10:40exercise. Well, apparently salsa dancing
- 10:43doesn't count unless you actually move your feet.
- 10:46Who knew that? But here's the truth.
- 10:48Asking this question puts the power back into your hands
- 10:52because it shifts from reactive to proactive.
- 10:56And it's not just about what you can do, it's about what you
- 10:59choose to do. And that's a different kind of
- 11:02power. And that's where I want to share
- 11:05something from Carmen's care partner Corner, as she wanted me
- 11:10to read this to you. Ready.
- 11:13Hi everyone, It's Carmen for the care partners.
- 11:15Our version of that question might be this.
- 11:19What can I do to help without burning out because you can't
- 11:22pour from an empty cup? For a long time, I thought being
- 11:25strong meant saying I'm fine and when I wasn't, even when I
- 11:29wasn't. But that's not strength, that's
- 11:31survival, and it doesn't help anyone.
- 11:34I've learned that taking care of myself as part of taking care of
- 11:36Bryce, and it means resting when I need to, reaching out for
- 11:40support, and being honest when I'm overwhelmed.
- 11:44So if your care partner watching this, remember you matter in
- 11:47this equation as well and you don't have to have all the
- 11:51answers. You have to keep showing up and
- 11:55you can go to the doctor as well.
- 11:58And when Bryce is asking, Bryce is asking.
- 12:00When Bryce asks those questions, what can I do in between
- 12:02appointments? I ask the same things.
- 12:06What can I do in between appointments to better support
- 12:08him and support myself better? That's interesting.
- 12:13That's really good. So there you go.
- 12:16See, this is not a narcissistic disease.
- 12:18It's not just about us, right? It's about our partners and our
- 12:21people that are caring for us as well.
- 12:23And they need that same question.
- 12:24What can I, what can they do in between appointments that are
- 12:27going to help them, right? Help them make it through to the
- 12:31next appointment. It's almost making it from
- 12:33appointment to appointment. So you see, that's why I keep
- 12:35her around, right? She's the wise one.
- 12:38But here's the bottom line. These questions, they're not
- 12:42just for your doctor, they're for your life.
- 12:45Now, what do I mean by that? What?
- 12:46Like specifically, what do I mean?
- 12:48You know what I mean this. What does it mean for me
- 12:50specifically, right? These three questions, how will
- 12:53I know when it's time to adjust? And what can I be doing between
- 12:56appointments? Write them down, take them with
- 13:00you. And don't just ask them once,
- 13:02ask them again and again and again again as things change.
- 13:06Because the person who gets good at asking questions gets good
- 13:10answers, and the person who stays silent gets what's ever
- 13:14left. And if you're ready to take
- 13:17control of your next appointment type, I'm asking the questions
- 13:20in the comments right now. Let's flood the comments with
- 13:23that phrase. A movement of people who are
- 13:25done being passive and ready to participate in their care.
- 13:30If you want to keep learning how to do that, join us in the inner
- 13:32circle. That's where we dive deeper,
- 13:34share winds and wobbles, and talk about what's really works.
- 13:37The links below in the description and hey, if you're
- 13:39newly diagnosed or you're ready now to take another step, a
- 13:42deeper step in your, in your walk in this new life of yours
- 13:46of Parkinson's, start with the boot camp.
- 13:48It's where you'll learn the basics, understanding your meds
- 13:51and build your foundation for what's coming next.
- 13:53The links are in the description below.
- 13:55And I think there is only 9 spaces left, only nine seats
- 13:58left. So get them before they get out.
- 13:59And with that, you've made it. Here it is.
- 14:03You've unlocked today's price system with Parkinson's.
- 14:07Silence changes nothing. The right questions can change
- 14:11everything. Well, there you go.
- 14:13Make sure you're asking the right questions.
- 14:16And you keep doing that. And you know what?
- 14:18You keep showing up, keep speaking out, keep asking
- 14:21questions, and you keep doing life today.
