Latest / Foul Territory / All-Star Logan Webb & Infield coach Ron Washington @Giants Camp
Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: We got the infield coach, Ron Washington, the legendary man himself,
- 0:06Speaker 1: joining us right now here in Scottsdale Stadium.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Thank you for having us.
- 0:12Speaker 3: I thank you guys for having me on.
- 0:15Speaker 4: It's so great to see Wash really appreciate the time
- 0:17Speaker 4: as always.
- 0:18Speaker 5: So what do you got for us? I mean, what's
- 0:20Speaker 5: this team like?
- 0:22Speaker 6: Tell us?
- 0:22Speaker 5: I mean there's a lot of uniqueness here with some
- 0:24Speaker 5: of the personnel and then even the manager of course,
- 0:27Speaker 5: who we'll have on the show later in Tony Bytello.
- 0:30Speaker 7: Well, I'll tell you what we were coming together. We've
- 0:34Speaker 7: been working well and Tony's making certain that we pay
- 0:38Speaker 7: attention to the details of the fundamentals, you know, especially
- 0:43Speaker 7: trying to be better on the base pads, you know,
- 0:47Speaker 7: trying to make certain that we know where we're supposed
- 0:51Speaker 7: to be doing the fundamentals and what it's going to
- 0:54Speaker 7: take to do it on a daily basis.
- 0:57Speaker 3: He's on top of everything.
- 0:58Speaker 7: So we've been having a lot of fun because the
- 1:00Speaker 7: guy's been out there getting after it.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Wa Wash.
- 1:03Speaker 8: Do you think players now don't know the fundamentals as
- 1:06Speaker 8: well as they should because we always went over fundamentals,
- 1:09Speaker 8: But it was like spring training was like Oh yeah,
- 1:12Speaker 8: I kind of. You know, you just got to like
- 1:14Speaker 8: set that in so that you do all little things
- 1:17Speaker 8: great for one hundred and sixty two games. But do
- 1:19Speaker 8: you think kids just don't know it as well because
- 1:22Speaker 8: of how travel ball and everything is coming into pro ball.
- 1:25Speaker 7: Yep, I think that has something to do with it.
- 1:28Speaker 7: But I think even though we are the major league team,
- 1:33Speaker 7: you still have to go over it every day as
- 1:36Speaker 7: if you don't know it, you think about it. These
- 1:39Speaker 7: guys have had two and a half three four months off,
- 1:42Speaker 7: so we got to get back in the groove. So
- 1:43Speaker 7: and the way you get back in the groove is
- 1:45Speaker 7: to pound the fundamentals every single day because that's what
- 1:49Speaker 7: you're going to rely on during the course of a
- 1:50Speaker 7: season that'll take you through six months. So I love
- 1:55Speaker 7: that Tony got us out there going through the fundamentals
- 1:58Speaker 7: every single day.
- 1:59Speaker 3: And guess that's what he's right in the middle of everything.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Well, I love hearing that.
- 2:03Speaker 1: If anybody doesn't know, I don't even know if Wash remembers,
- 2:05Speaker 1: but I got to experience playing a little bit with
- 2:08Speaker 1: you in Atlanta in twenty twenty one. I wish I
- 2:12Speaker 1: would have gotten to be under you earlier. In the
- 2:16Speaker 1: sense of the fundamentals that you just spoke of. You
- 2:19Speaker 1: really are out there every single morning with that knee
- 2:21Speaker 1: down on a glove, firing those ground balls of people,
- 2:24Speaker 1: and you're just making everybody better. How is that transition
- 2:27Speaker 1: to you got Devers now kind of switching positions, going
- 2:30Speaker 1: to first base, you finally get to be with him.
- 2:32Speaker 2: How's he looking so far?
- 2:33Speaker 7: Well, he's looking like you just described me. He's out
- 2:36Speaker 7: there every morning on his knees doing the same thing
- 2:39Speaker 7: you just described. And that's what it's about. You know,
- 2:43Speaker 7: you can be as good as you can be when
- 2:45Speaker 7: you a teacher, a mentor or something like that, but
- 2:49Speaker 7: if your pupils don't follow the orders that you're putting out.
- 2:53Speaker 7: And I'm not mean orders where you being strict to
- 2:55Speaker 7: anything like that. I'm talking about the consistency of how
- 2:58Speaker 7: you go about your business every so you can bring
- 3:00Speaker 7: that consistency into the game. Well, they're doing that right now,
- 3:05Speaker 7: and our job is to make sure that it's not
- 3:07Speaker 7: just right now.
- 3:08Speaker 3: It's day in and day out.
- 3:10Speaker 7: And you just mentioned Atlanta in twenty one that's what
- 3:14Speaker 7: we did. Yeah, I mean it was every day we
- 3:17Speaker 7: didn't get off to the greatest of starts, but we
- 3:20Speaker 7: never stopped trying to find out a game. And this
- 3:23Speaker 7: is where you find you gain right here in spring
- 3:26Speaker 7: training and then take it through the season and stay
- 3:28Speaker 7: on top of it all year.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Loon.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Well, like I said, I think you made me a
- 3:31Speaker 1: better infielder just by the last year of my career.
- 3:33Speaker 1: And I would have wish I would have got you
- 3:34Speaker 1: a little bit earlier in my career. The problem is,
- 3:37Speaker 1: you made that Atlanta infield a little bit better too,
- 3:39Speaker 1: And everybody's hamstrings and hands were ready for one hundred
- 3:41Speaker 1: and sixty two game season, and I never got to
- 3:43Speaker 1: get up to the big league team because they were
- 3:45Speaker 1: too damn good, because you made them too damn good.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Well, they were already good.
- 3:48Speaker 7: They were already good, but they all I did is
- 3:50Speaker 7: make sure that they got to work. And the beautiful
- 3:53Speaker 7: thing about it all is I think that year the
- 3:56Speaker 7: whole infield went at.
- 3:57Speaker 1: All Star Game thirty and one hundred. I think all
- 3:59Speaker 1: of them, yes, I mean, but I guarantee you ask
- 4:02Speaker 1: any of them, You're the first name they mentioned when
- 4:04Speaker 1: they think of who got them right that year, who
- 4:06Speaker 1: got them ready to play for that Well.
- 4:08Speaker 7: That's because we did it together, and that's what it's about.
- 4:12Speaker 7: I demanded that they be tough and put in the
- 4:16Speaker 7: time every single day, and they demanded from me that
- 4:19Speaker 7: I be there and make sure that they do what
- 4:21Speaker 7: they're supposed to do. And that's what teams that win
- 4:24Speaker 7: does get the demanding out of each other. So it
- 4:28Speaker 7: was wonderful and I'm hoping that we end up doing
- 4:30Speaker 7: that right here because so far it's been wonderful. It
- 4:34Speaker 7: really has the.
- 4:35Speaker 8: Right side of your infield. There's gonna be two guys
- 4:37Speaker 8: that haven't played that position very much, Luis rise at second,
- 4:41Speaker 8: Rafie Devers at first. However the alignment ends up working out.
- 4:46Speaker 8: What do you see from these guys? One positive thing
- 4:49Speaker 8: that you see from them and one thing that okay,
- 4:52Speaker 8: like this is going to be the next step. If
- 4:54Speaker 8: they can handle if they can do this, they can
- 4:57Speaker 8: fix this, then they're going to be good at this position.
- 5:00Speaker 7: Well, one positive thing I got is their work ethic.
- 5:04Speaker 7: They diligent in a way they come and go about
- 5:06Speaker 7: their business. The next thing is they are trying to
- 5:10Speaker 7: bring everyone around them along with them. So and that's
- 5:13Speaker 7: what it's gonna take all of us together. And they're
- 5:16Speaker 7: also doing that everything that they think of can add
- 5:21Speaker 7: to what we're doing.
- 5:22Speaker 3: They're out front adding it, and.
- 5:24Speaker 7: Like I say, their work ethic is off the charts
- 5:26Speaker 7: right now, and I'll be very impressed if we can
- 5:29Speaker 7: keep that work ethic going throughout the year, because that's
- 5:32Speaker 7: what keeps the team going.
- 5:35Speaker 1: We were talking about it, we said, we were making
- 5:36Speaker 1: jokes earlier. I remember from Atlanta. Do we have a
- 5:40Speaker 1: swear jar here for you at all?
- 5:42Speaker 9: No?
- 5:43Speaker 7: I you know, I've sort of got that a little
- 5:46Speaker 7: bit under control.
- 5:49Speaker 6: If they miss a couple, well, and I don't.
- 5:51Speaker 7: I don't expect that. That's only to be human nature
- 5:53Speaker 7: right there. If they do miss a couple, as long
- 5:55Speaker 7: as they don't miss them daily, they can miss them
- 5:58Speaker 7: every now and then. That just let me know a human.
- 6:01Speaker 7: But if they start to missing them daily, then they
- 6:03Speaker 7: will have to have a swear jar.
- 6:06Speaker 8: What what makes you swear more when somebody's late for
- 6:10Speaker 8: when somebody's late for their prat for early work, when
- 6:13Speaker 8: you're out on the field hitting them balls.
- 6:15Speaker 7: Or know what what makes me get to that point
- 6:18Speaker 7: is when they don't show up period. Yeah, that's what
- 6:20Speaker 7: gets me to that point because I starts with my
- 6:25Speaker 7: morning to be prepared for them, and then when they
- 6:28Speaker 7: disappoint me, I'm totally disappointed because, I mean, I'm hitting
- 6:31Speaker 7: the floor at four o'clock in the morning and getting
- 6:34Speaker 7: everything I have to do together so I can be
- 6:35Speaker 7: out on the field that early in the morning and
- 6:38Speaker 7: be ready when they show up. And when they don't
- 6:40Speaker 7: show up, it upsets me. And maybe I don't have
- 6:43Speaker 7: any reason to be upset, but I get upset because
- 6:46Speaker 7: I'm competitive, even though I'm not between the lines.
- 6:48Speaker 1: You don't disappoint this man, I'll say that from experience.
- 6:51Speaker 1: You get your butt out there in the morning. You
- 6:53Speaker 1: don't keep this man waiting.
- 6:54Speaker 8: All right, Well, then that brings me my next question.
- 6:58Speaker 8: Did you miss getting out there for them or getting
- 7:00Speaker 8: up at four in the morning being the manager not
- 7:02Speaker 8: being able to get out in the field to hit
- 7:04Speaker 8: a couple of fungos to the boys? Did you miss it?
- 7:07Speaker 8: And are you glad you're back to the back out
- 7:09Speaker 8: on the field in this capacity?
- 7:11Speaker 7: I never got away from it, even though I was managing.
- 7:15Speaker 7: I mean, my expertise is infield play, and I wouldn't
- 7:18Speaker 7: be doing my team any justice even though I had
- 7:21Speaker 7: an infield guy. If I wasn't out there going through
- 7:24Speaker 7: the stuff with him, and that's what I did. I
- 7:26Speaker 7: was making sure my infield guy was doing the right thing,
- 7:30Speaker 7: and so in a way I was working for him
- 7:32Speaker 7: and I let it go down like that that I
- 7:34Speaker 7: was his helper, but he knew what I was out
- 7:37Speaker 7: there for to make sure that the things that needed
- 7:39Speaker 7: to be done got done and there was no corner's turn,
- 7:42Speaker 7: you know. Cut Everything was done the way it was
- 7:44Speaker 7: supposed to be done, even though when I was managing,
- 7:46Speaker 7: I was doing the same thing.
- 7:49Speaker 5: Hey was wash, How are you feeling?
- 7:50Speaker 4: Obviously you know you went through a heart surgery last
- 7:53Speaker 4: year looking sound fantastic, but how difficult has the past
- 7:58Speaker 4: year been for you? I mean big league manager, drib as.
- 8:01Speaker 4: You know it is a huge to do and you
- 8:03Speaker 4: had to step away for a little bit. Can you
- 8:05Speaker 4: take us through how you're feeling and how that whole
- 8:07Speaker 4: process was because you know, however, it ended with the
- 8:10Speaker 4: Angels too and landed you here.
- 8:12Speaker 7: Well, the thing is, I was disappointed because just as
- 8:17Speaker 7: my issue hit me last year in June, I had
- 8:21Speaker 7: my team going in the right direction. I had the
- 8:23Speaker 7: attitude good, they was committed to what we was trying
- 8:26Speaker 7: to do and then that came down, and then I
- 8:29Speaker 7: had to watch it on TV, and to watch it
- 8:32Speaker 7: on TV, I had to watch them just fall apart,
- 8:35Speaker 7: and it wasn't I wouldn't say they fell apart because
- 8:38Speaker 7: I wasn't there, but we fell apart, and I just
- 8:41Speaker 7: felt like we was ready to whip some people's butt
- 8:44Speaker 7: before I went down, and I made a difference in
- 8:47Speaker 7: that clubhouse, and I made a difference on that team.
- 8:51Speaker 7: You know, I'm not patting myself on the back, but
- 8:53Speaker 7: I did make a difference, and I can see the
- 8:55Speaker 7: difference wasn't there when I wasn't there, if that makes
- 8:58Speaker 7: any sense. So you know, I'm enjoying myself here with
- 9:03Speaker 7: the Giants. They took a chance on me and my health,
- 9:07Speaker 7: and I'm not gonna let them down. I've been doing
- 9:09Speaker 7: everything I can every single day to make sure that
- 9:12Speaker 7: I can post post for the Giants, post for the players,
- 9:15Speaker 7: post for Tony, and mainly post for myself.
- 9:19Speaker 8: Why do you feel like they didn't bring you back?
- 9:20Speaker 6: Wash?
- 9:23Speaker 7: You know, I think it was tough for them to
- 9:26Speaker 7: trust my health. You know, nobody would say that, but
- 9:29Speaker 7: I think it was tough for them to trust my health.
- 9:32Speaker 7: And if I wouldn't have went down. I think I
- 9:34Speaker 7: still be in Anaheim. But when I went down and
- 9:37Speaker 7: I had a big option that they had to pick up,
- 9:40Speaker 7: they didn't trust my health, and I have no problem
- 9:42Speaker 7: with that.
- 9:43Speaker 3: They got right to feel that way.
- 9:45Speaker 5: M Hey, wash quick follow on that.
- 9:48Speaker 4: Because you've been in the game for a long time
- 9:51Speaker 4: and you were just in that organization. Do you think
- 9:53Speaker 4: it's fair after that that they gave Kurtzuzuki a one
- 9:57Speaker 4: year deal? Like, if you were in that position as
- 9:59Speaker 4: a manager, what could be the struggle there to make
- 10:03Speaker 4: sure you're being your best self in front of players.
- 10:07Speaker 7: Well, the thing with Kurt, He's gonna always be hisself.
- 10:09Speaker 7: That's who he is. I had him in Oakland, I
- 10:12Speaker 7: had him a few places, and I like him. So
- 10:15Speaker 7: you know, that's a tough situation to be in. But
- 10:18Speaker 7: as you said, these managing jobs aren't that easy to get.
- 10:21Speaker 7: And if you have to get it for a year
- 10:23Speaker 7: to prove that he deserves it, I'll take it for
- 10:26Speaker 7: a year.
- 10:26Speaker 3: And that's what he did.
- 10:27Speaker 7: I took on what I took on knowing the situation
- 10:30Speaker 7: that was happening, and I felt like I could turn
- 10:32Speaker 7: it around. And I'm more than certain Kurt think he
- 10:35Speaker 7: can turn it around. The guys are a little older now,
- 10:38Speaker 7: they're still young, but they're a little older.
- 10:40Speaker 3: They got a little bit more experience.
- 10:41Speaker 7: You can expect more out of them, you can demand
- 10:44Speaker 7: more out of them, and you should get more out
- 10:46Speaker 7: of them, even though you you.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Know they're still young.
- 10:49Speaker 7: So it's a good situation in the sense that he
- 10:52Speaker 7: has a major league, big league managing job and it's
- 10:59Speaker 7: nothing like it really isn't is nothing like.
- 11:02Speaker 8: Some of the best times in clubhouses are when you
- 11:05Speaker 8: get to dress the rookies up. Now that you're the
- 11:07Speaker 8: vet and you're I've never been in a coach's manager's
- 11:10Speaker 8: office when it comes time to dress guys up. Will
- 11:14Speaker 8: you be buying Tony Vattello some type of dress up
- 11:17Speaker 8: or his rookie year as a manager.
- 11:20Speaker 7: No, that don't include the manager is the boss man. No,
- 11:24Speaker 7: the manager is the boss man. You don't mess with him.
- 11:27Speaker 7: You just do what he say, does what you do.
- 11:30Speaker 7: That's what you do. You don't talk about dressing him up. No, no, never.
- 11:36Speaker 4: Plus, he's got the hangout spot. Wosh I heard he's
- 11:38Speaker 4: got the hangout spot. He's got he's got the cool
- 11:40Speaker 4: crib right.
- 11:42Speaker 3: That's right.
- 11:43Speaker 7: And I tell you he's a sharp guy and he'll
- 11:47Speaker 7: he'll grow on you if you are around him. He really will.
- 11:50Speaker 7: He knows a lot about the game of baseball. Even
- 11:53Speaker 7: though he be a professional, he's still got a lot
- 11:56Speaker 7: of knowledge and wisdom about the game of baseball.
- 12:00Speaker 4: Well, he's lucky to have you. He's a smart man
- 12:02Speaker 4: to bring you in to help him with with year one.
- 12:04Speaker 3: Here.
- 12:04Speaker 4: Wash, we really appreciate the time. It's good to see
- 12:06Speaker 4: you in good health too. Thanks for joining us. Good
- 12:09Speaker 4: luck this season.
- 12:10Speaker 7: Well, thank you, and I'm like I said, I will
- 12:13Speaker 7: do everything i can to make sure I'm healthy through
- 12:16Speaker 7: the whole one hundred and sixty two game season and
- 12:18Speaker 7: what amount of games we play in the playoffs.
- 12:22Speaker 5: The game is better to have you here, So good luck.
- 12:24Speaker 3: Thank you, Wash, thank you, Hey bye bye.
- 12:29Speaker 4: Logan web joining us right now from the Giants, Logan,
- 12:31Speaker 4: great to have you on. Am I right on this one?
- 12:33Speaker 4: This is just in the back of the head. Are
- 12:35Speaker 4: you the last dude to hit a home run before
- 12:37Speaker 4: the DHR started? Or am I totally off there?
- 12:40Speaker 6: If we don't count SHOWHOI, then yes.
- 12:42Speaker 4: Yes, we don't count sho.
- 12:45Speaker 2: That's fine.
- 12:46Speaker 6: That was it all, Dame.
- 12:48Speaker 2: That's a good tricky question.
- 12:51Speaker 6: No, I do it was no Bill Chris Mott with
- 12:54Speaker 6: the PODCA that's it.
- 12:58Speaker 5: We're never going to see that again. We're not going back.
- 13:01Speaker 6: You know, you still have the ball.
- 13:02Speaker 9: Of course, it went right over you know, the little
- 13:06Speaker 9: dog cut out left field?
- 13:08Speaker 2: How about that?
- 13:09Speaker 1: Ten years never played in San Diego once, mean San Francisco,
- 13:13Speaker 1: I think, said San Diego, you hit it?
- 13:14Speaker 6: No, no, no, no, no, san Diego.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Versano said okay, okay, yeah, Hey, first row or thirtieth row,
- 13:21Speaker 1: they count all the same.
- 13:23Speaker 5: Yeah, all right, So what do you got for us logan?
- 13:26Speaker 4: I mean one of the popular topics here is the
- 13:28Speaker 4: manager coming in from the college ranks, got a veteran
- 13:32Speaker 4: crew that he's going to manage. Like we just spoke
- 13:35Speaker 4: to Ron Washington live on the show. Does it feel different?
- 13:39Speaker 4: Is he kind of figuring himself out or because he's
- 13:42Speaker 4: got a lot of swag and confidence, it just feels
- 13:44Speaker 4: like he's another big league manager.
- 13:47Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean it feels very similar.
- 13:51Speaker 9: Say's a little more energy than some of the ones
- 13:53Speaker 9: that I've had before, But I think that's a good thing. Uh,
- 13:56Speaker 9: you know, it's something that we probably needed a little bit,
- 13:59Speaker 9: especially kind of at the end of the season. Last
- 14:02Speaker 9: year just seemed like we were kind of in a role,
- 14:05Speaker 9: and I think Tony's a guy who will kind of
- 14:08Speaker 9: mitigate that and make sure that kind of never happens.
- 14:11Speaker 9: So I'm excited. It's been a fun camp so far.
- 14:15Speaker 9: There's a ton of good energy. Obviously, it's a long season.
- 14:21Speaker 6: We all know that.
- 14:22Speaker 9: I think you know as players, if there's anything we
- 14:25Speaker 9: can help him with, it's that is knowing that it's
- 14:28Speaker 9: a long season.
- 14:29Speaker 8: That's a long season. But you're the one guy in
- 14:32Speaker 8: that rotation that's like, ah, whatever, I'm just gonna be
- 14:35Speaker 8: here the whole time. I'm just gonna do my thing.
- 14:38Speaker 8: What does that look?
- 14:39Speaker 6: What does that look?
- 14:40Speaker 8: How does that look different compared to when you first
- 14:43Speaker 8: broke in the league, This preparation for the season. I'm
- 14:47Speaker 8: not even talking about WBC yet because that's new, but
- 14:50Speaker 8: what does that look like for you differently because you're
- 14:53Speaker 8: just a constant dude in the end of the year
- 14:55Speaker 8: conversation for Cy Young Award.
- 14:59Speaker 9: Yeah, I think every off season is different. I mean,
- 15:02Speaker 9: you guys know that you go into it, you're working
- 15:04Speaker 9: on new stuff, this year that wasn't necessarily last year
- 15:10Speaker 9: is kind of the cutter and the forced scene this year.
- 15:11Speaker 9: For me, it's just kind of refining some things. But
- 15:16Speaker 9: I think the more you throw, the more innings you throw,
- 15:20Speaker 9: the more pitches you throw, the more you know your body,
- 15:23Speaker 9: the more you know how to get prepared for a season.
- 15:27Speaker 9: And I think in that too, you kind of learned
- 15:30Speaker 9: different things to stay prepared. Maybe, uh, you know, I
- 15:35Speaker 9: was with Verlander last year. He's been doing it for
- 15:37Speaker 9: a was it twenty twenty first year, and that guy
- 15:41Speaker 9: knows knows what he needs to do to be ready
- 15:44Speaker 9: to throw throw in a season and to to throw
- 15:47Speaker 9: each game. And I picked my I picked his brain
- 15:50Speaker 9: as much as I could, so hopefully I can, you know,
- 15:53Speaker 9: be a guy that that throws as long as he does.
- 15:55Speaker 9: And he was wonderful to me, and like I said,
- 16:00Speaker 9: you just I think my biggest thing with young guys
- 16:02Speaker 9: is try to learn from the older guys as much
- 16:04Speaker 9: as you can. See what they do position player wise.
- 16:06Speaker 9: For us, like Chapman's a freaking stud. Go watch what
- 16:11Speaker 9: he does every day, Go follow it his routine. Everyone's different.
- 16:15Speaker 9: You're not gonna everyone's not gonna be the same. But
- 16:18Speaker 9: I think those are good things to follow, and that
- 16:20Speaker 9: for me, that's I've had so many good older guys
- 16:23Speaker 9: that I've just like taken bits and pieces of throughout
- 16:26Speaker 9: the years and it's helped me to this day, like
- 16:29Speaker 9: figure out the routine that I need to to be
- 16:31Speaker 9: ready to throw every fifth day.
- 16:33Speaker 1: It's gonna say, no matter how long you play, you
- 16:35Speaker 1: always kind of can approach the game still as a
- 16:36Speaker 1: rookie where you're never never done learning this game's never
- 16:39Speaker 1: really done teaching. I think you've led the most inning
- 16:43Speaker 1: since twenty twenty one. You led the league in strikeouts
- 16:46Speaker 1: last year for the the NL, so you gotta feel
- 16:49Speaker 1: confident going into this year.
- 16:50Speaker 2: But here comes the WBC.
- 16:52Speaker 1: What changes have you made kind of in prep going
- 16:54Speaker 1: for the season not be pulled back certain bullpens or
- 16:58Speaker 1: are you pushing forward to make sure you're ready for that?
- 17:02Speaker 9: To be honest, I feel like I haven't changed. I
- 17:04Speaker 9: haven't changed anything, Honestly. I feel like I've kind of
- 17:07Speaker 9: toned it back a little bit. You know, I was
- 17:10Speaker 9: for some reason. There's there's like two bullpens in January
- 17:13Speaker 9: every year where I throw harder than I will all
- 17:15Speaker 9: season and exactly, and and I I made it a
- 17:19Speaker 9: point to not do that this year, just knowing because
- 17:22Speaker 9: I'm gonna have a little bit more adrenaline in in
- 17:25Speaker 9: March than I'm used to. But at the same time,
- 17:29Speaker 9: I I know it's not the same, But I get
- 17:32Speaker 9: nervous for every start I make. You know, I pitching
- 17:36Speaker 9: in these spring training games. Uh there's there's not many
- 17:40Speaker 9: people in the in the stands. I get nervous for that.
- 17:42Speaker 9: I get a ton of adrenaline for that. So I
- 17:44Speaker 9: know it's gonna be different. I'm you know, I'm expecting it.
- 17:48Speaker 9: I'm excited about it. In reality, it's three weeks before
- 17:52Speaker 9: I throw something like that anyways, And and it's it's
- 17:55Speaker 9: not as many pitches, it's not as you know, many innings.
- 17:59Speaker 9: And you know, I got Dave Greschner there. He's gonna
- 18:01Speaker 9: be our head trainer, absolute stud. So I think I'll
- 18:06Speaker 9: have my routine kind of dialed into to know I can.
- 18:10Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 18:11Speaker 1: We're about to see those two seams at ninety eight
- 18:12Speaker 1: miles an hour here for TUSA, the only two starts
- 18:15Speaker 1: he's ever.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Going to hit that that Bilo, and it's.
- 18:17Speaker 6: Gonna be insane. You're talking about the wrong guy. You're
- 18:20Speaker 6: talking about scenes right, Nope.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Talking about you hit Bilow in those two those two bullpens.
- 18:24Speaker 2: I want those with the USA jersey on.
- 18:27Speaker 8: A lot of a lot's been made about the fact
- 18:28Speaker 8: that school was going to make one start. Confirm you
- 18:31Speaker 8: are making two starts, correct?
- 18:33Speaker 6: I am?
- 18:34Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, And I feel like I got slacked for
- 18:36Speaker 9: that too. But there's only seven games, right.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Riot slacks is only starting.
- 18:40Speaker 9: To Yeah, well that it came out and said we
- 18:42Speaker 9: were throwing me and schemes were thrown two and there's
- 18:45Speaker 9: my dad's a big like the wright.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Out leader of the NL and Paul Skins going multiple
- 18:51Speaker 1: starts of a seven game series.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Let's just what kind of flack did you get? People?
- 18:55Speaker 5: Yeah, what was the problem?
- 18:56Speaker 3: What for?
- 18:57Speaker 9: I don't I don't think they understand that it's only
- 18:59Speaker 9: seven games. At the end of the day, it's only
- 19:01Speaker 9: seven games. If I throw to Paul throws two and
- 19:04Speaker 9: Scooble throws one, there's I could throw the other two.
- 19:07Speaker 6: Yeah, and there's studs throwing those other games.
- 19:09Speaker 9: It's not like Lord, So it's uh yeah, I mean
- 19:13Speaker 9: I'm gonna see it through. I don't know if I'll
- 19:18Speaker 9: let Mark DeRosa kind of tell people what I'm throwing,
- 19:21Speaker 9: but I know what I'm throwing.
- 19:22Speaker 6: I know I'll be starting both of them.
- 19:24Speaker 1: So now I want to get into a little of
- 19:26Speaker 1: just what you were throwing, because I know I looked
- 19:28Speaker 1: at one of the adjustments you made was kind of
- 19:30Speaker 1: saving that that change up a little bit more right.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Is that something you developed on your own as a
- 19:37Speaker 1: philosophy or like kind of I'm gonna hide this and
- 19:39Speaker 1: save this till two strikes?
- 19:41Speaker 2: Are you just reading hitter swings? Are you reading?
- 19:43Speaker 1: And is this your something else might come up where
- 19:45Speaker 1: I might be a cutter inside on the hands or
- 19:46Speaker 1: something to just kind of go as the season.
- 19:48Speaker 9: Goes, I you know, I the game nowadays there's so
- 19:51Speaker 9: much information where I feel like I was getting to
- 19:57Speaker 9: points of the season where, uh, you know, I go
- 20:00Speaker 9: up there and face the lefty and it might now
- 20:01Speaker 9: be a great matchup for me.
- 20:02Speaker 6: So I throw five straight changeups, and I.
- 20:05Speaker 9: Might throw a couple of good ones, and then that
- 20:06Speaker 9: third one or fourth one, whatever it was, is the
- 20:09Speaker 9: one I don't click or it doesn't click, and you
- 20:12Speaker 9: know I'm giving up a base hit. So it was
- 20:14Speaker 9: just kind of saving it for just having confidence in
- 20:17Speaker 9: the other other stuff. I think Justin was a big
- 20:20Speaker 9: helped me with that a lot last year.
- 20:22Speaker 2: If I face you and.
- 20:23Speaker 1: You threw five change ups in a row after I'm
- 20:24Speaker 1: done running out my ground ball the first base, I
- 20:27Speaker 1: would be.
- 20:28Speaker 2: Letting you hear it.
- 20:30Speaker 8: Gratcy what you got Logan All right now, you didn't
- 20:34Speaker 8: tell us when you're gonna pitch. But you have to
- 20:36Speaker 8: answer this question because I say it on the show
- 20:38Speaker 8: all the time. I think you're one of the top
- 20:40Speaker 8: five pitchers in the game. Where do you rank yourself
- 20:45Speaker 8: in the top ten? If you if you, if you
- 20:48Speaker 8: want to be humble, humble Larry today, where do you
- 20:51Speaker 8: rank yourself of the top five starting rope pitch starting
- 20:55Speaker 8: pitchers in the game?
- 20:56Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 20:57Speaker 9: I you know, I that's that's a hard question. I
- 21:03Speaker 9: there's so many good pictures in baseball right now that that,
- 21:09Speaker 9: you know, kind of go under the radar. I don't
- 21:13Speaker 9: know if I would. I'm not going to be the
- 21:15Speaker 9: one to rank myself.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Who do you think? Okay, let me fellow up on that.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Who do you think is one of one of a
- 21:20Speaker 1: couple of the underrated pitchers who are just nasty that
- 21:22Speaker 1: maybe don't get the public love or don't have the
- 21:25Speaker 1: stats yet that back up how good they are.
- 21:28Speaker 9: I'll go with my probably my favorite one, with Brian
- 21:31Speaker 9: Wu I do.
- 21:34Speaker 6: Yeah, he's a stud. Yeah, I mean there's a ton
- 21:37Speaker 6: of guys. I mean, I feel like I could keep.
- 21:40Speaker 9: I feel like Christopher Sanchez is a guy who I
- 21:43Speaker 9: know he finished second and sy Young, but I feel
- 21:45Speaker 9: like he kind of flies on the radar, like that's
- 21:47Speaker 9: a six foot six lefty thrown ninety seven mile power
- 21:50Speaker 9: sinkers happy to be on the couch. I don't think, Yeah,
- 21:54Speaker 9: I don't think any hitter is excited to face that guy.
- 21:58Speaker 9: I mean, I could go on Joe Ryan's one of
- 22:00Speaker 9: my one of my guys. A ton of guys that
- 22:05Speaker 9: I would all rank ahead of me.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Well, not anybody else would, But that's how good you've been.
- 22:11Speaker 8: What do you think is gonna happen? First, you challenging
- 22:13Speaker 8: an ABS strike zone or a strike or ball call,
- 22:18Speaker 8: or Patrick Bailey getting thrown out of a game because
- 22:21Speaker 8: he didn't have any more challenges left.
- 22:29Speaker 6: Probably Patrick Bailey. I'm gonna keep.
- 22:30Speaker 9: I'm gonna so our I think our first game, we
- 22:33Speaker 9: had two pitchers challenge and they were ugly, like not
- 22:37Speaker 9: even close. And so I think the next day we're like,
- 22:40Speaker 9: all right, catchers are the only ones who can challenge here,
- 22:43Speaker 9: you guys.
- 22:44Speaker 6: Yes we lost, all right, but I was gonna let
- 22:45Speaker 6: him do that anyways.
- 22:46Speaker 9: You know, I think pictures, you're throwing the pitch, you're emotional,
- 22:49Speaker 9: right three to two, you want the pitch, you know.
- 22:52Speaker 6: I think every pitcher's.
- 22:54Speaker 9: Has done this before, where you think it's a strike
- 22:56Speaker 9: and then you go back and watch the video and
- 22:59Speaker 9: it's like three balls out or three balls up, and yeah,
- 23:03Speaker 9: So I think the best thing to do is kind
- 23:06Speaker 9: of leave it to Patrick. I think he's I know
- 23:09Speaker 9: I might be biased, but he probably knows his own
- 23:11Speaker 9: better than any catcher in baseball.
- 23:13Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean the number, the numbers would say it
- 23:15Speaker 8: for sure. What is what do you think is going
- 23:19Speaker 8: to be the toughest pitch? Because we have abs now
- 23:23Speaker 8: for umpires and Patrick to call when you're throwing the sweeper,
- 23:27Speaker 8: when you're running that ball left to right or right
- 23:30Speaker 8: to left, because you throw both pitches that move in
- 23:32Speaker 8: both directions.
- 23:35Speaker 9: I think for me, uh, I think in general, I
- 23:37Speaker 9: think the fastball up is gonna be hard probably for
- 23:42Speaker 9: me too, Like sometimes I'll throw the sinker up, you know,
- 23:46Speaker 9: sometimes I think sometimes umpire gets maybe you know, I'm
- 23:53Speaker 9: throwing it down most of the time, that throwing up,
- 23:55Speaker 9: and I think that one will be hard just in general.
- 23:57Speaker 1: But I think you see the most fluctuation at the
- 24:00Speaker 1: top of the zone because umpires haven't had to be that,
- 24:04Speaker 1: because that pitchers haven't gone up there for so much
- 24:06Speaker 1: as much as they are down on the zone and crassy.
- 24:09Speaker 1: I think I'm gonna answer a little bit of that
- 24:10Speaker 1: question with it depends which side of the catcher the
- 24:12Speaker 1: umpire sets up on. I think kind of the opposite
- 24:15Speaker 1: side that he sets up on might be the one
- 24:17Speaker 1: that is harder for him to get right or to control,
- 24:20Speaker 1: and that's gonna be challenged a little bit more, would
- 24:23Speaker 1: you agree, I know.
- 24:24Speaker 8: One hundred percent.
- 24:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:26Speaker 8: As far as if they're way in with the lefty
- 24:28Speaker 8: their way in with a righty, that slider will look
- 24:30Speaker 8: different than the sinker down in a way to the lefty.
- 24:33Speaker 3: I like that.
- 24:34Speaker 8: So it's all up to Patrick. It's not up to
- 24:36Speaker 8: you Logan.
- 24:37Speaker 6: No, Yeah, I'm gonna leave it up to him.
- 24:39Speaker 8: Every time I see you seem like, you're the same guy,
- 24:41Speaker 8: you got the same grin on You're like always in
- 24:44Speaker 8: the seventh eighth inning. What is your temperament after you
- 24:48Speaker 8: don't have a good start, Is it a tough five days?
- 24:51Speaker 8: Do you grind on it? Or are you like, oh,
- 24:54Speaker 8: you know what, I'm freaking good, So I don't need
- 24:57Speaker 8: to grind on this one too much longer.
- 25:00Speaker 3: I try to.
- 25:01Speaker 6: I try to get it out that night. Right. It's
- 25:04Speaker 6: the old saying.
- 25:04Speaker 9: Right, you go in the shower, get it all out
- 25:06Speaker 9: of you, and then you gotta get into the next
- 25:10Speaker 9: day and just prepare for the next one.
- 25:13Speaker 6: But it depends sometimes, you know.
- 25:15Speaker 9: There's I think last year I had a seven e
- 25:18Speaker 9: r A and the month of July, so uh, there's
- 25:21Speaker 9: a lot of.
- 25:22Speaker 6: Five days where you're not very happy with yourself.
- 25:25Speaker 2: And I've had months like that.
- 25:27Speaker 6: Yeah, I think.
- 25:29Speaker 3: I think as as.
- 25:31Speaker 9: Much as you can get over it, as fast as
- 25:33Speaker 9: you can, I think, the better off you'll be. It's
- 25:37Speaker 9: like the old saying, Like, you know, I think a
- 25:38Speaker 9: lot of the best pictures I try to tell pictures this,
- 25:40Speaker 9: A lot of the best pictures can switch it to
- 25:43Speaker 9: the next pitch instead of the next that bat or
- 25:45Speaker 9: the next inning, they.
- 25:46Speaker 6: Kind of wash it off and ready for the next one.
- 25:52Speaker 4: Logan last one for you. Do you hate the Dodgers?
- 25:56Speaker 4: Respect the Dodgers, Like, what's your take? You know, as
- 25:59Speaker 4: their division rabbit, you guys had or the Giants organization
- 26:02Speaker 4: had a dynasty in the twenty first century, Dodgers have
- 26:06Speaker 4: their own thing going on right now.
- 26:07Speaker 5: What's your take on what you're seeing over there?
- 26:10Speaker 4: Is you guys get to face them a lot, and
- 26:11Speaker 4: you just saw them add on a few more big
- 26:13Speaker 4: names this offseason.
- 26:15Speaker 9: I I mean, I think it's it's great for I
- 26:18Speaker 9: think it's great for baseball. I think, you know, I
- 26:21Speaker 9: think I'm kind of supposed to hate them, right. Uh,
- 26:23Speaker 9: you know, I play for the Giants. You know it's
- 26:26Speaker 9: a great rivalry. But the stuff they're doing, I think
- 26:30Speaker 9: they want to win, right, And I think that's if
- 26:33Speaker 9: you're in any organization, I think that's the biggest thing,
- 26:35Speaker 9: is you want them to want to win as well.
- 26:37Speaker 9: And they've shown that they want their players to win,
- 26:39Speaker 9: they want the organization to win. So I think it's
- 26:41Speaker 9: you know, I think it's a good thing. You always
- 26:44Speaker 9: want a villain, right, I think I think they've they've
- 26:48Speaker 9: they've gotten that title, not in a not in a
- 26:50Speaker 9: bad way either. I like, I enjoyed, you know, the competition.
- 26:53Speaker 9: I like facing them. Sometimes I don't like facing them
- 26:57Speaker 9: if they score six of me, which is again after
- 26:59Speaker 9: the seventh, But I really enjoy you know, you want
- 27:02Speaker 9: to compete against the best, and and uh, you know,
- 27:06Speaker 9: I think that's like I said, I think it's good
- 27:08Speaker 9: for baseball. You know, it's it's cool seeing you know,
- 27:11Speaker 9: friends get paid. I know it's you kind of text
- 27:14Speaker 9: me like, hey, why'd you sign there? Dude, But you're
- 27:16Speaker 9: at the end of the day, you're you're excited for them.
- 27:18Speaker 9: It's uh, you know, it's life changing. And you can
- 27:23Speaker 9: never folto a guy for wanting to win.
- 27:24Speaker 4: No, Yeah, hey, I'm with you. I mean, they've got
- 27:29Speaker 4: something special going on right now. And yeah, we'll see,
- 27:31Speaker 4: we'll see if you guys can give them a little
- 27:33Speaker 4: run this year. I'm looking forward to seeing what this
- 27:35Speaker 4: team's got to offer. And dude, it have a great
- 27:38Speaker 4: time at the WBC. Everybody on on the U S
- 27:41Speaker 4: side obviously rooting for you, so good luck. Appreciate the time,
- 27:44Speaker 4: great to catch.
- 27:45Speaker 3: Up with you.
- 27:46Speaker 6: I appreciate you guys. Thanks for having me.
- 27:56Speaker 4: Ron Washington's the best awesome to have him on live
- 27:59Speaker 4: on FT. All right, let's get to bed MGM futures
- 28:02Speaker 4: for the World Baseball Classic, which begins next week and.
- 28:05Speaker 5: Will go over picks. So we did ticket yesterday, Kratz.
- 28:08Speaker 5: Now let's move to handle and I did the one
- 28:10Speaker 5: oh one or the four to one one for anyone
- 28:12Speaker 5: that needed a little bit of help on what the
- 28:14Speaker 5: difference is. This is where the big money's going USA.
- 28:17Speaker 4: Thirty nine percent of the money being placed on the
- 28:21Speaker 4: World Baseball Classic winner is on USA, and they're minus money.
- 28:25Speaker 5: They're like one tennis. It's moved around a little bit
- 28:29Speaker 5: something like that.
- 28:30Speaker 4: Okay, dr is getting twenty four percent of the pie
- 28:34Speaker 4: and then Venezuela at seventeen percent. You get much better
- 28:37Speaker 4: odds with those two. Anything you can learn from the
- 28:39Speaker 4: trendsier I.
- 28:41Speaker 8: Mean the trends. I just feel like I feel like
- 28:44Speaker 8: maybe people are taking it, and the number will show
- 28:47Speaker 8: that people are taking it as all well, America, they
- 28:49Speaker 8: gotta have the best team that you know, there's just
- 28:52Speaker 8: so much going into this. When you get into the
- 28:55Speaker 8: semi finals, it's one game elimination. You might not have
- 28:59Speaker 8: the best It's not like they're gonna say, all right,
- 29:01Speaker 8: one game elimination. We aren't know Scooba's only throwing one game.
- 29:05Speaker 8: Maybe it doesn't line up that this person's gonna pitch
- 29:08Speaker 8: to this lineup and you catch a game. That's what's
- 29:11Speaker 8: so great about this and that's why it's so tough
- 29:13Speaker 8: for me to go with the favorite in the US.
- 29:17Speaker 8: If I'm putting money down, I'm with some of the
- 29:20Speaker 8: public here where the Venezuela, the dr even Japan. I
- 29:25Speaker 8: think we're getting plus three hundred earlier in the week.
- 29:28Speaker 8: I didn't see it today, but to me where that's
- 29:31Speaker 8: where the money is in this just because it is
- 29:33Speaker 8: such a tough, tough tournament to win, and that's what
- 29:36Speaker 8: we're picking here who wins.
- 29:39Speaker 4: I think the key, also, Kip, is that the quote
- 29:43Speaker 4: playoffs for the WBC start just about instantly, right. You
- 29:46Speaker 4: have pool play for five seconds and then it's such
- 29:49Speaker 4: a quick tournament and it's single elimination. We get enough
- 29:54Speaker 4: variants in the postseason sometimes that if you now turn
- 29:58Speaker 4: this into a winner take all, you know in the quarters,
- 30:01Speaker 4: the semis and the finals, it's just really really putting
- 30:07Speaker 4: you in a position to see an upset. And that's
- 30:09Speaker 4: why for me, as much as the USA team looks
- 30:12Speaker 4: really good, if I'm throwing money down on a winner,
- 30:16Speaker 4: I'm not going there.
- 30:18Speaker 1: It's especially I mean with these guys because a lot
- 30:20Speaker 1: of times the veterans who are playing on Team USA
- 30:22Speaker 1: are playing on all these teams. You build up to it,
- 30:27Speaker 1: you build up to the major league season, and so
- 30:28Speaker 1: you might be building up to that six seven innings
- 30:32Speaker 1: to a full game right before the season starts. So
