- 1:04episode of Johnny Dollar for you, and then coming up next or after that,
- 1:08we have an episode of man Hunt. But first of all, let's
- 1:12go ahead and finish off the Alder matter. Here's part five from Hollywood.
- 1:19It's time now for Johnny Dellen. Good morning, Dollar. Is Lakiara Cable
- 1:27office calling. We have an answer to cables you've sent to Hartford, Connecticut.
- 1:32Good would you like me to read the message? No, I'm wanna
- 1:36telephone with extensions. Oh I see, Perhaps you prefer I haven't delivered that.
- 1:41No, no, I don't. Then you will come in for yourself.
- 1:44Yeah, just as fast as I can get there tonight and every weekday
- 1:55night. Bob Bailey in the transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Packed
- 1:57Expense account Erica's Fabulous Freelance Insurance Investigator Ours Truly Johnny Dollar. From Special Investigator
- 2:17Johnny Dollar location in Caracas, Venezuela to the home office Worldwide Mutual Insurance Company,
- 2:23Hartford, Connecticut. Assignment the Alder matter expense account continued at the cable
- 2:32office. I ran into another dead end. Vic Kelly back in Hartford,
- 2:37had come up with absolutely nothing on either Dora Jansen, who called herself Dora's
- 2:39cole or Arthur's singer the little Man. She'd hurried off an incoming liner yesterday.
- 2:45Complete strikeout. I headed outside, caught a glimpse of Missus Billy Alder
- 2:50watching me from across the street. Social life changing missus order as being my
- 2:58hostess include tailing me being on Lagier Street, constitute telling you preserve me from
- 3:04amateur detectors. Good morning, mister doll. Now, come on, you
- 3:07rushed down to the house so fast you couldn't possibly have eaten. I'll buy
- 3:10you breakfast. I knew it was curiosity that made her take me up.
- 3:17She just couldn't resist the thought that maybe I'd give something away, let something
- 3:21slip. She ate warily, tentatively. We must have looked like two boxes
- 3:25and a close fight, sitting on the edge of their stools, waiting for
- 3:28the last round, the one that would decide the winner. You're staring thinking,
- 3:37you love your husband, missus older, you'd better be a reason for
- 3:39a question like that. Let's stop sparring. Huh, you know why I'm
- 3:44down here? Do I? You told me you did the other day,
- 3:46so I did. I don't be aloof lady. You're not that much in
- 3:50the clear. You've been the beneficiary several times and dropped. My daughter is
- 3:54the present one, I believe, And what exactly is your point? There's
- 4:00been no crime committed, no crime. Somebody's bullet misses your husband by inches
- 4:03and you call it no crime. Thank you for breakfast. Don't forget.
- 4:08I saw you out in the grounds of the house, searching the place that
- 4:10shot came from. I told you before you knew an automatic pistol was used,
- 4:14admitted looking for a show. You talk too much, mister dollar,
- 4:15and you talk too little. Look, why have you been tailing me.
- 4:19It's certainly not to see that I'm protecting your husband's life. So it's obviously
- 4:24to make sure that I don't find out something. Now, what is it,
- 4:28missus Alder, And why is it so terribly important? I don't find
- 4:30out about it? If you won't leave, mister Dollar, I will.
- 4:38There is this about getting someone angry enough, fearful enough, it makes them
- 4:41forget about caution. Missus Alder never once looked back, simply headed straight for
- 4:45the cheap little waterfront hotel where Arthur Singer was staying. She stayed for over
- 4:49half an hour, and once she left, she still looked frightened. Whatever
- 4:54the game was, it looked like everyone was a player but me. But
- 4:57missus Alder's move helped started in an id at me. So I headed for
- 5:01Caracas in the office of a smart cop, hefe Velisquez. I needed someone
- 5:05to talk to, and the Hefe was a good listening gome. I mean,
- 5:11go sit down, tell me where it feels wrong, eh, belly
- 5:15older. He does all that changing in his policy, so I assume he's
- 5:18scared of being knocked off, probably by one of the people who has been
- 5:23named a beneficiary of the policy. So now I'll take the other people concerned.
- 5:28Alder's wife is as much a clam as her husband is. Also she
- 5:31knows what kind of a gun was used to take that shot at him.
- 5:34Dora Jansen, a woman who uses an alas and is obviously afraid of me
- 5:40at the Singer a little man. Dora has hidden in a waterfront hotel,
- 5:45and now I find all his wife knows about the little man too. Conclusion,
- 5:48amigo, that the three of them are in on something together, but
- 5:53not to kill Alder for that policy, his daughter gets it all. Yet
- 5:57Alder he's afraid, and I think he's scared of some thing the others know.
- 6:01I suppose that shot wasn't meant to kill him, just frighten him,
- 6:03a sign that somebody meant business. That this is a nice piece of logic.
- 6:08Yeah, all I gotta do is make it work. Look, Hey,
- 6:11whatever this deal is, nobody's going to make a move till I'm out
- 6:14of here, So so good, bad or indifferent, I'm going to do
- 6:17a little acting. I stayed with the Lesquez another half hour, setting things
- 6:26up as best I caught. Then I drove to the airport and paid Item
- 6:29eleven three hundred and nine dollars and eighty cents for a plane ticket marked Hartford,
- 6:32Connecticut. Sure it was an expensive prop, but this was one act
- 6:36I had to be convincing him. I drove back to Caracas, pasted a
- 6:41real angry look on my face, marched into Billy Alder's sumptuous office, and
- 6:44through the airline ticket on his desk. He studied it for a long minute.
- 6:49What does this mean by that that I've had all of you? I
- 6:51can take Alder, you and you keep me alive. You are going back
- 6:56to the stage. You can read the ticket says Hartford, Connecticut. It
- 7:00also says the six o'clock plane because there's nothing earlier. But why why dollars?
- 7:05So I can get back and make my recommendations to the insurance company.
- 7:09You know what I'm going to recommend. All please wait that they cancel your
- 7:12policy because of your refusal to cooperate. Sorry dollar, please now don't do
- 7:16it. I beg there's a clause in that policy. I don't care about
- 7:19that policy. Now, don't you understand and stand? What? Listen to
- 7:21me? All that changing of beneficiaries. I only did that to make them
- 7:26send someone down here. I need protection against what I I'm in a jam.
- 7:32All I want is protection until it's peacefully settled. Do you understand,
- 7:38no Planer, I know someone wants to kill me over a business deal.
- 7:44I'm asking you to see that I stay alive until I have time to reason
- 7:47with this man. Oh is he? I can't tell you, And let
- 7:50me tell you something. He's just arrived in town. How did you don't
- 7:54you see miss a Dollar? You must stay. Sorry, goodbye, mister
- 7:57Alder. I went back to the older house, packed my bag and set
- 8:05my goodbyes. Neither missus Olden nor Dora Jensen wept. I drove to the
- 8:11airport, checked my luggage Jim. Then I slipped away. Drove back to
- 8:15Caracas the long way. A half hour later. I checked into a little
- 8:18side street hotel where hefe Velskaz had reserved a room for me. Then came
- 8:22the hardest part, the waiting. That six o'clock plane must have been way
- 8:26out over the Caribbean when the call finally came, Uh, yeah, Velaska's
- 8:37here. You started a waiting, brother, you know it. Look have
- 8:41hey your men check in? Maybe I should have taken part of the work
- 8:43be passion on mey go. Your whole idea depends on it. Thinking you
- 8:46took that plane, you must stay right where you are. But what about
- 8:50your men? Have they get a call every couple of minutes, Amigo Alder
- 8:54his wife, the Dora Johnson artist singer. I could tell you ever moved
- 8:58them back in the last three hours, but they haven't made the one I'm
- 9:01waiting for. Hum you will know it three minutes after they make if they
- 9:05make it. Thanks. Five minutes later, Alaskaez called again. He took
- 9:11only enough time to tell me he was on his way and to be down
- 9:13on the street in two minutes. I was I only beat him by seconds.
- 9:22Come on of me though, Well, it looked like your plan worked
- 9:30on it. This Dora Johnson. Yeah, as soon as she learned your
- 9:33plane leg the one you did not take, she rushed to the waterfront.
- 9:37Hote'll pick up the art the singer. Then the two of them rushed to
- 9:39the Alder house, and Alder must have seen him coming, because he jump
- 9:45in his car and race out in the direction of his oel via the Carnio.
- 9:48They see him and follow him. That's where we headed for. Now
- 9:50we better get things going, get there before singer kills Older. I don't
- 9:54know whether or not he deserves killing, but I know one thing, it'll
- 9:58cost my company a quarter a million. Well ask His men were plenty of
- 10:03going halfway the car and narrow. One of them flagged this down, told
- 10:05us both cars had definitely passed his way, and when we reached the oil
- 10:09field, another one witted at the gate. He told us Billy Alder,
- 10:13Dora Jansen, and Arthur Singer were in a little work shack across the field.
- 10:18We left the car and moved as quietly as we could toward the shack.
- 10:20It was a weird feeling. In every direction you could see the great
- 10:24oil rigs working, pumping, ignoring us. We reached the shank, peered
- 10:28cautiously through the window. An even weirdest scene was taking place, and almost
- 10:33hysterical. Dora Jensen pointed a lugur at a sweating Billy Older. A terrified
- 10:37Arthur Singer pleaded with her. Their words pushed easily through the thin wooden sledge.
- 10:41Dora, don't, please, don't do it. You'll only make things
- 10:43worth your brother's right, Dora. Dora listened to me like he listened to
- 10:46you four years ago. When did it get him, mister pansy promoter,
- 10:48tell me that I'll make it right with him. A quiet gentleman, a
- 10:52bookkeeper who never did anything wrong in his life until you saw him a bill
- 10:56of goods. Listen to me, both of you. So he read your
- 10:58book for you, made false entries, made it look like he was responsible
- 11:03for the bankruptcy, and he did the three years in prison that you should
- 11:05have done. Four one hundred thousand dollars. That was the deal. And
- 11:09believe me, I'm not trying to cheat him. The money is tied up
- 11:13in my business. I need time, but I'll pay him pay It's been
- 11:16a year since he came out of jail. You'll never pay. You'll try
- 11:18to cheat him out of the money one way or another. I swear to
- 11:22you. It's a lot easier to kill him than pay him, isn't it
- 11:24all? You're crazy? Is that why you kept the luger in the house.
- 11:26Were you worried when it disappeared? When I shot at you to let
- 11:30you know I meant business. It's what you're doing. Dollar knows all about
- 11:33this. Oh yes, your bodyguard must have gotten frightened after I had him
- 11:37beat up the other day. He's on his way to the States and the
- 11:39plane. Dora, No, I'm going to kill him. No, come
- 11:43on, run it down, doah? You pull that trigger and he'll still
- 11:48come out the one air. No, and you read that door. Not
- 11:50make me fire, please, I don't care as long as he gets what
- 11:54he deserves. Stand back send you read that For a split second, she
- 11:56waved, then the hay took over all this sank to the floor. Disbelieve
- 12:01on his face. Panic. She raced down into the night, and I
- 12:05went after hold it. There's no place to go. Do what happened to
- 12:18her job? She panicked, turned the scream at me, and ran right
- 12:20into one of the protection fences around the Derek. She just passed out.
- 12:22She'll come around. How's Old there? Conscious? But I do not know.
- 12:26We better get into the hospital. Yeah, come on, she didn't
- 12:31mean to shoot a mister to my sister. Wouldn't hurt any sure, sure,
- 12:33go take care of her. She was only doing it for me.
- 12:35For me, mister Old I I would have paid. I wasn't going to
- 12:46cheat him. Oh dollar, you know, yeah, we heard it all.
- 12:52I'm glad it's over worrying. I want to tell me one thing Older,
- 12:56your wife, Where does she fit? She had nothing to do with
- 12:58it, just knew about it. I wasn't too nice to her for a
- 13:05long time. Other women her running around just the way of punishing me,
- 13:11paying me back. He knew I couldn't afford complain. Yeah, we should
- 13:18have told me a long time ago, or I couldn't. Case could always
- 13:22be reopened. I couldn't face. That would have hurt too much. Oh
- 13:28yeah, but it wouldn't have hurt as much as that bullet expense account total
- 13:37eight hundred and thirty three dollars and fourteen cents. Details Billy Older was rushed
- 13:41at the Caracas hospital, underwent some excellent surgery and relaxed claims department. He's
- 13:46going to make it as for shady business tactics, Well, that's out of
- 13:48my Bailly Wick. That's for the law boys. Yours truly, Johnny Dollar.
- 14:05Now here's our star to tell you about next week's story. Next week.
- 14:09A quiet cabin by a quiet lake, a place ideal for romance,
- 14:13an ideal for murder. Join us, want you, yours truly, Johnny
- 14:18Dollar. Yours truly, Johnny Dollar is starring Bob Bailey. Is transcribed in
- 14:31Hollywood. Written by Tony Barrett, it is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone.
- 14:37Heard in this week's cast were Gil Stratton, Harry Bartel, Barbara Fuller,
- 14:41John Dayner, Virginia Gregg, Don Diamond, Vivi Janis and Tony Barrett.
- 14:45Musical supervision by Amarigo Marino. Be sure to join us on Monday night,
- 14:50same time and station for another exciting story of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar,
- 14:56Roy Rowan speaking h Welcome Back. While on the bright side, Johnny's UH
- 15:58plan helped him break the case, on the downside, the insured almost got
- 16:03killed. To be fair to Johnny, he really was not left with much
- 16:07choice. He had to try something there with everything dead ended. This really
- 16:14just illustrates Johnny's determination to get things taken care of, not to leave things
- 16:18unresolved. And really that was best for mister Older because from a business perspective,
- 16:26probably what he should have done is just stayed there long enough to get
- 16:30a response from a wire requesting to have the policy canceled due to non cooperation.
- 16:37All right, Well, now what we're going to talk about Manhunt and
- 16:41its star Larry Haynes. This was one of Haynes's early radio performances. The
- 16:48earliest performance in existence was from Gangbusters in nineteen forty two, so this was
- 16:55just about a year after that. His career on radio was good, a
- 17:00lot of character roles in programs like Words at War and I interseanked him Columbia
- 17:07Workshop The Shadow. We heard him earlier this season on The Amazing Mister Malone
- 17:15doing a great job as Lieutenant Brooks in the nineteen fifty one summer replacement version.
- 17:22He also had some pretty good parts in the nineteen fifties and I think
- 17:26we'll still hear him later on this season and one of my favorite short detective
- 17:33series, Easy Money, and he also played Mike Hammer was one of the
- 17:38voices of Mike Hammer on That Hammer Guy, which will eventually get around a
- 17:44plane, of course. His big claim to fame was through television, where
- 17:51he joined the cast of Search for Tomorrow in the eleventh episode of theies,
- 18:00playing the role of Stue Bergman, and he stayed with the series until it
- 18:04went off the air in nineteen eighty six. Though thirty five years he picked
- 18:10up two Daytime Emmy Awards for Best Supporting Actor on a Daytime Drama Series and
- 18:18was first Lady Pat Nixon's favorite soap actor. Now let's see Arry Haynes at
- 18:26work in this episode of Manhunt. This is the second episode and it's called
- 18:33the Crystal Clue man Hunt, the story of the Crystal clue that led to
- 18:45mannt. No crime has been committed, yeah, no murder has been done.
- 18:59Yeah, no, manhunt has begun. Yes. Hello, Hey,
- 19:11Richards is speaking? That's your time? True? Oh gosh, and who
- 19:18are you? What do you want telling me on my private hone? What
- 19:23you want? Yeah? Yeah, I want you. I can't please,
- 19:36I can't. Very clever murderer, the sound of your voice, and a
- 19:48voice doesn't leave a clue or su who will find the clue or will start
- 20:00a man hunt? Man Hunt and the Crystal flu All right, john lad
- 20:14tell me exactly what happened now, Well, there's nothing to tell the morning
- 20:18about twenty minutes ago, I came here to mister Dars's apartment with them worthhip.
- 20:21He wanted me to bring him here. He was going to a theory,
- 20:23had told me, and he wouldn't be home for midnight that any idea
- 20:32might have done it, Johnny Boyant, I better call me s all right,
- 20:38But I still have no idea who did it? Of course we were
- 20:42working on an important formula for the War Department, and they were threatening phone
- 20:45calls, but we never paid any attention to him. I wish we had.
- 20:52I'm going to trace this rock and murder down at the last thing,
- 20:53I do it. He was very close to the working game, as close
- 20:59as a man could. Who you put me to the school, gave me
- 21:02a champion, his from diet, everything from what I say, I don't
- 21:06know when he says it's a murder that's became and Drew Hey, Richard Darcy
- 21:10a millionaire. It is John Gordon's assistant. He found the body and reported
- 21:15the murder. Johnnavis is blue Stephen the police and you do hill a lot
- 21:23of things. Examiner was here, found the bullet wounds. It's the climate
- 21:27that at eight o'clock. But that's not sure about the turn. Yes,
- 21:33maybe five minutes in the way. Say you worked for the Darcy Gordon,
- 21:40Yes, I did. I guess I more than worked for him. See
- 21:42the practically in doctor, I don't want to appear too much like the squad
- 21:49in my line, but we'll worry you at eight o'clock. You don't have
- 21:53to worry about him and then Johnny the years and he's got a too falibis
- 22:00what is it? What is it? From seven thirty to a quarter of
- 22:03ten, my son, Bill Junior and John Gordon were visiting me down a
- 22:07police headquarters. You know that that's about it? What are you looking for?
- 22:22Half of what he's broken so down on the other people? What sort
- 22:37of what it would have to do with them? I don't know that.
- 22:40I don't want you told us Gordon went to school with young Bill as a
- 22:47state tech. Is one for you? Go figure her? M hmm,
- 22:56good looking too. I'm going to go into a murder justice. He didn't
- 23:00commit this. Darcy was shot at lap and Gordon was down at Midporter,
- 23:04so he didn't need to scept maybe for a minute, what about those funerster
- 23:11Jordan said, threaten Darcy and as he came over his form, Well,
- 23:15I'll run up to the FDR in the morning, the file in any agents
- 23:18about that crazy inventor. Richard him with the medical examiner, told Bill Morton
- 23:26doctor shot lady. I think so at least you set the time of the
- 23:30dator cap and said that jat clock. But I remember the time he was
- 23:36shot blood at all and on the womb one thing. Darcy was already dead,
- 23:42and the bullet was fired into his and mister Martin, Richard Martin and
- 23:51better and uh are you my name is Stephen out in a minute thirty.
- 24:02I don't know any answers the way mister Martin. You knew Jay Richard Darcy?
- 24:08Hi, Yes, I know him. I read in the paper this
- 24:14morning. You did I killed him? You know? Oh? Yeah,
- 24:18every night for the past ten years, I've killed Gay Richard Doughty only he
- 24:23was playing Joe dosh you when he should my formula and disappeared? Who killed
- 24:29him? Every name? Every night? Sometimes I'd stangle him, sometimes I'd
- 24:33poison him, and sometimes I'd hang him and watch him stupp Well, did
- 24:38you buy any chance that the film lasting? I think you men reared to
- 24:45Darcy last night? And oh hello, Gord's starting to get you down with
- 24:53trouble pa. I don't mind telling us to see him do anything I can't
- 24:57at that time. So first, it's Saul probably really steal a. Richard
- 25:00Lordy sat awful records. Dawson was Martin's park I went Martin dispelled the former.
- 25:07He did take it, but he set up a trust on then the
- 25:08event of his guest that would turn over a lot of money tomorrow. He
- 25:12never would give Martin any real money while he was alive, because you'd probably
- 25:17know markham pantal condition. He couldn't have tried onto it. Martin would be
- 25:19a rich man as he died. You mean didn't know about the trust on?
- 25:23Yes, that's just one more thing that what are you making with?
- 25:29Well it's for the war Department, and I can't tell you part of them.
- 25:33Well i'll call you if I knew. And that Hello Operata, connect
- 25:42me with the medical Yes, yes, I wanted to be quite a minute.
- 25:49Hello doc, blu they doc, we did al toopy on dark He
- 25:53didn't just ye? Good? So what did the guy of doc? Oh
- 26:00that's so yeah, this is all started to make sense to Pat doc by
- 26:07Now you know what, Darcy. So then I also happen to know who
- 26:11killed him? Do you know how? I mean? I know because one
- 26:15half of a what but things missing? The kind of good to know we've
- 26:30got a murderer, raclat and put our hands on him. You've got that.
- 26:33Thanks for calling me down, students. I wanted to be in this
- 26:36thing at the Pennant. How did you know? Well, first of all,
- 26:40we know that Darcy was killed eight o'clock. The shot sometime after.
- 26:44Why should a man dead? That's the person who was fired the shot,
- 26:48didn't know Darcy was already dead. Got the plant and the body was on
- 26:52the floor right putting the police the medical examiner's reports, so that Darcy have
- 26:56been gas boys, it's poisons. Yes, your firm was making it wasn't
- 27:00affording you can tell me now? Oh, yes, it was from the
- 27:03original risted modern former. It justice like bro she was the former and he's
- 27:08murdered with it. Well, the dance killed darkly, and then the murderer
- 27:11came back later to make sure of it was shoot then the apartment. He
- 27:15should have done that all at once. I know he's goodn't see when Darcy
- 27:18was gass the murderer was nowhere in He murdered darc and he wasn't in the
- 27:22room. Oh you're over work. No, I don't think so. I
- 27:26got the what I'm kind of that the murderer had a pain, a little
- 27:30poisonous gas and he closed it in some kind of a pintastic tamer. That's
- 27:33very interesting. Yeahs Anyhow, he went to Darcy's apartment sometimes during the afternoon
- 27:40of the murder, and inserted the glass contender in the telephone box between the
- 27:42hammer and the belt. Now a phone call will clause the hammer to hit
- 27:45the glass and break it unloosing the gas. That's what happened. That's how
- 27:49Darsy died, with the murderer of himself baked mount away. Oh yeah,
- 27:55I know, I know the watch well. The killer came back to Duson's
- 27:57department later, but not only did she told him an air at the room,
- 28:00but also to remove the twenty fragments of class from the gas containers broken
- 28:03by the phone book. But he picked up one piece of glass two minutes
- 28:07one of that's been on Darcy's wrist. Last has been smashing his fut hes
- 28:11spero the first tool I had they do and I learned about the poison gas
- 28:17on that step. How do you like that? I can't even murder with
- 28:22a telephone. Yes, there's a darn meal paper crime. I still don't
- 28:25see how you need the cold Martin the ta said monastery Darky or I said,
- 28:30well, I wanted him place to cut pep his own protection to see.
- 28:33I had a hundred of killing attempt for him. Next, you mean
- 28:40hold him in a bill is our case down there. The murderer had to
- 28:44have a motor, that's first. Still, then he had to have access
- 28:47to three things were the poison gas, the Darcy apartment, and darcy private
- 28:51telephone number. Because the call at killed Doc who came over that phone.
- 28:53Only one person could still that entire picture because either Martin or any foreign at
- 28:57it could possibly get Darcy's five phone. That's why the murder had to be
- 29:02you. Let's me smart, how you're going to be staring right plugging bell?
- 29:07It's not that money for you didn't need me for Annaday a homicide prospective.
- 29:21Yay, hello, yes, uh huh yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 29:33Okay, they get rid of it. John Gordon got work to do.
- 29:38Alice Jennison the scandal comumnos on the globe, but justin Pomon quite a standard
- 29:44position herself. He's lying in the gutter on a side street in the plum
- 29:48and who their throat is cut for me to weird welcome back. I actually
- 29:52thought that was a pretty clever method. There were probably a couple things that
- 30:00could have gone wrong, but we're unlikely, so it made sense. And
- 30:07only thing was that once the how was discovered, the who was pretty easy.
