Transcript
- 0:01SPEAKER_01: Welcome to Everyone's a Critic.
- 0:02SPEAKER_01: The show where a guest picks a movie rated below forty percent on Rotten Tomatoes and tells us why critics got it wrong.
- 0:09SPEAKER_01: I'm your host, Janis Cove, a formerly pretentious film school student.
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: Ten years later sees the error of his ways.
- 0:15SPEAKER_01: My guest today is author, critic, and co-founder of the Belladonners, Carrie Whitmer.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the show, Carrie.
- 0:26SPEAKER_02: Thank you for having me.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: Thanks for being on.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: So the movie you've decided to pick today is Venom.
- 0:32SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: And can you tell me like what your I I guess I want to know like your history of the movie.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: I I know it's only a couple of years old, but what is like what made you want to like seek it out in the first place?
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this is a good question.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: Uh you're right that it hasn't even been out for two years, so there's not much of a history with it.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: Um, but I will say that my Venom story is that at the time that it came out, I was working full-time as an entertainment reporter at Business Insider.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: Um I was mostly covering TV, but I also wrote about movies sometimes.
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: And I remember when the Venom trailer came out, like everyone on my team was like, What the fuck is this?
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: Um, I don't know if I can say fuck on here, but I assume so uh my coworker um went to a press screening one evening.
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: He was like, he left work early and he's like, Oh, I'm gonna go see Venom.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: Like, it's probably gonna be really bad.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: And the next morning we get into work and I say, How is Venom?
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: And he was like, It's like if the it's he told this is what he said.
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: He said, It's like the room of the Marvel universe, and then he said, You're going to love it, Carrie.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: I think that's pretty accurate.
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: I I I think it's both.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: I think it's accurate and inac inaccurate.
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: We'll get into this.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: Uh my defense of Venom will get into it later.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: But um, despite him saying that to me, saying that I would love Venom, um, I actually didn't end up seeing it because I kept seeing a Star is Born in theaters again and again.
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: Um and I was like, well, Venom's making enough money, like it's gonna be fine.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: Like, if I don't see this movie in theaters, like I'll just rent it on iTunes or whatever.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: It'll be fine.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: It'll get a sequel.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: Um, and before I I put in my notes before I forget, a star a star is born and venom shared the same cinematographer.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: Incredible, incredible.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: Anyways, so I didn't get around to seeing Venom in Theaters, but as soon as it left theaters, I wanted to see it desperately because more and more people were saying, Carrie, you would love Venom.
- 2:54SPEAKER_02: I know like people say it's bad, but Carrie, you were gonna love this movie.
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: Um, including um my friend Miles Surre from The Ringer, who was on Twitter.
- 3:02SPEAKER_02: He was like, Venom is amazing, you would love Venom.
- 3:05SPEAKER_02: Um, so I like literally counted down the days until I could buy Venom on digital, which I did, and I watched it and I did love it.
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: And I think it's a very misunderstood movie.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: Um that does not deserve to have what is it at 29%.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: I was I was surprised at how low it quite it really was.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: Yes, it's it's I was also surprised because I just looked at it like last night.
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: I was like, I can't believe how low it's and I know some of these critics.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: Like, come on, guys.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's the other thing.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: You know a lot of these people, yeah.
- 3:38SPEAKER_02: Um, so and I I I do think that a lot of people have kind of changed their minds, and like as a critic myself, I can say, like, there are movies that I've revisited, and I'm like, oh, like maybe this is actually not as bad as I thought, or maybe this is like worse than I thought.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we all we all make mistakes.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: Um, but I think of Venom's case, a lot of people made a very big mistake.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: That's great.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: So, like, um, how many times do you think you've seen it at this point?
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: Um, so I think I have seen it four times.
- 4:11SPEAKER_02: Um I guess I would say the first time I watched it, I sat down, like lights down and paid attention to it.
- 4:20SPEAKER_02: Um last night I did the same thing while I was taking notes.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: Um, and the other two times, it's just kind of a movie I put on in the background.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: It's a really great movie for like when you're doing laundry or you're hungover on a Sunday, you know, you don't wanna you don't want something that's gonna challenge you, but you want something when you kind of look at a scene, you wanna watch it.
- 4:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: Um like when you see the lobster tank scene, like you can't look away, but then like during like an action scene, it's fine if you like get up and take a shower or something, you know.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: Just leave for 15 minutes, come back, it's still fine.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: The sign of a great movie.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 5:00SPEAKER_02: A great rewatchable movie.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: I've I um there were parts that I was looking away and just like eating my lunch over the yeah, but I was still taking notes, but like half paying attention.
- 5:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I would say that like the action scenes, while the action scenes are good, they're not like they're nothing amazing.
- 5:24SPEAKER_02: They're not they're not like it's and it's not that the graphics, the computer graphics are bad.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: Like, I think they're actually pretty good and they're pretty limited, which is what I like about the movie.
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: But the action sequence just like don't feel as important because it's very much like a about Eddie Brock, like it's about the character development, it's not really about Venom as much as as it is about this, like I guess, sad journalist um who just got dumped by Michelle Williams for doing his journalism, um, which is one of my other favorite parts of the movie.
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: But like the action sequences like just don't really grab you in a way that they do in like the Dark Knight or like a Marvel, like Avengers Endgame or something.
- 6:04SPEAKER_02: Like they're just not as important, which I kind of like because action sequences are like my least favorite part of action movies, and I really like action movies.
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: I know that like sounds really ridiculous, but that's one of the reasons why I like Venom because there's only really like two action sequences.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I can think of two or three like big things happen in it.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: But I I also wonder if like that was a budget constraint or if it's just because like Ruben Fleischer is just like not able to do something like that.
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: No, so so I also like based on my knowledge of the movie, um, and just based on some light research I did to refresh my memory, like the budget on this is pretty big.
- 6:42SPEAKER_02: Like it's not like I don't think they had that many budget restraints.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: And apparently, from what I read, there were some scenes, some action scenes and stuff, more venom stuff that wasn't put into the movie.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: So there's stuff that's like just we'll probably never see.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it feels like there's big chunks of story missing from this.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: Oh, I I don't know if I I don't know if I feel that way.
- 7:06SPEAKER_02: I feel like maybe they'll get into more stuff in the sequel.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: I think they might have cut stuff intentionally so it because they probably knew that they were gonna do a sequel.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: Um, but I uh I don't know.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: I I you can just tell from the cast that they put a lot of money into it.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, the cost is they must have spent a fortune on that cost.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:27SPEAKER_02: Um and I know, like, good job, Jenny Slate.
- 7:31SPEAKER_02: Like, you did nothing.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: You know, she did nothing but be herself, and uh she probably got a really big check.
- 7:40SPEAKER_02: Uh so I I I don't know, like if it definitely was a big budget, but I think they just realized that the Venom thing was not the best part of the movie.
- 7:50SPEAKER_02: Like, I think they were like, We got Tom Hardy, and he's like jumping into a lobster tank.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, let's not waste him.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: Let's focus on him and yeah, exactly.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: Cut Venom down a little bit, especially if we're doing a sequel where there's less where we can focus on Venom less there as well.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: We can you we can add like more characters to it.
- 8:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: And I I guess my history with Venom would also be almost my like return to Tom Tom Hardy, who I kind of I don't know, I I liked Tom Hardy.
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: I was obsessed with him when I was like in my early 20s when Inception came out.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: Um, but then and I liked him as Bane, but I wasn't like I I wasn't as into the Dark Knight Rises as everyone else.
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: Like I thought, like I remember seeing in theaters and I was like, this movie's bad.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: I hate this movie.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, it was it was not great.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: But but it was well received at the time it came out, and like I sort of, like around like my group of friends that I had at the time.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: Um and I was like really struggling because I was like, I thought this was really bad, and people were like, oh, like Bane was so badass.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: And I was like, like Tom Hardy was good, but I kind of I don't know, I I just wasn't as into it.
- 9:04SPEAKER_02: Like I I just remember in between those two years, like Inception and Dark Knight Rises.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: Like, if Tom Hardy was in something, no matter what it was, I was gonna see it.
- 9:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:13SPEAKER_02: Um, and it's like I I didn't do that anymore after seeing The Dark Knight Rises, but now like I appreciate Tom Hardy way more um as a performer, and I'm now like going back and watching older Tom Hardy stuff.
- 9:27SPEAKER_02: Like the other night I watched This Means War.
- 9:30SPEAKER_02: Oh I don't don't recommend it if you enjoy cinema like with a purpose.
- 9:39SPEAKER_02: Um, but I mean it's pretty bad, but it's like a time capsule of 2012.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: It doesn't make any sense.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: Tom Hardy, Chris Pine, and Reese Witherspoon.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: It's really weird casting, like the three of them together.
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:51SPEAKER_02: It's like Tom Hardy's like first and last attempt at being a normal guy, yeah um, which is fascinating, but I I can't say I recommend you watch it.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: Anyone listening or you?
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: Um Yeah, I haven't seen it and I don't have any intention of watching it unless it can't unless someone wants to watch it on this, because I'm sure it's below 40%.
- 10:13SPEAKER_02: So oh absolutely.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: Um, but I don't know.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: No one's gonna go to bat for that movie.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: So should we get into like going over the movie itself then?
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: Like this run through it somehow.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: Like we can we can try.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: Maybe we'll make some more sense of it as we go along.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: That's what I learned with going over Revolver uh the Guy Ritchie movie.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: We I did that yesterday and we we actually made some sense of it and started to appreciate it.
- 10:44SPEAKER_02: I uh I can't believe you've managed to make sense of a Guy Ritchie movie.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: I know, and especially that one as well.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, which I I hated when I saw it at like 15, and then I watched it again and didn't hate it.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: So but with that said, like we are gonna make fun of this movie's plot and everything, but I will I am prepared to defend it.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: That's what I want.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, if you are you're a fan of it, so I want to hear why.
- 11:10SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: Even though you know it's something that's like you might know it's not great, but okay, cool.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: Um, so it opens and it says like it opens with in association with Marvel.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: So immediately you're like, oh no, this is not gonna be the same sort of Marvel film that we're used to getting.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: This is gonna be the uh that's in my mind.
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: This is I was just like, oh, this is gonna be the uh Spider-Man 3 version of what uh of a Marvel film.
- 11:34SPEAKER_02: I guess so.
- 11:36SPEAKER_02: I already knew because there was this whole I remember when the movie was announced, people were like, oh, is it gonna be in within the MCU Spider-Man universe?
- 11:46SPEAKER_02: Like, is uh Tom Holland gonna show up in this briefly?
- 11:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: Um but immediately they were like, no, this is its own separate thing.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: I remember that being I remember kind of remember that being the case, but then also there was was talk of like more recently with uh all the into the spider-verse and everything, like getting Tom Holland into this universe.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: So I thought, oh, maybe it's something related to it at least.
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: So yeah, so I think essentially the movie was so successful that I'm sure Kevin Feige is interested in adding this to the MCU, especially very dark compared to those films.
- 12:26SPEAKER_02: Yes, but apparently wasn't dark enough for critics to like it, which I'll talk about later.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: Okay, so like the it starts with like a spaceship uh re-entering the earth and it starts to crash because of like some kind of we don't know why quite, but we hear like some screaming on the board and everything, and then uh it lands in East Malaysia and cuts to Riz Ahmed and he's got like his bad American accent, and he's just he's doing a terrible American accent in this.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: It's it's a little so so I'm it's gonna sound like this is like an insult, but I actually genuinely mean this as a compliment within the context of this particular movie, which is ridiculous.
- 13:08SPEAKER_02: Uh, I think Riz Ahmed is uh like so self-serious in this.
- 13:13unknown: Yeah.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: And he's taking it so seriously, but like kind of on purpose.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: Possibly.
- 13:19SPEAKER_02: Like, I I I it's it's this really fine line between is he actually trying too hard or is he trying too hard on purpose?
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: I feel like he's the only one that kind of sticks out for me as like being a little bit out of place in the film, whereas everyone else is kind of having fun with it, it felt.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: So I don't know.
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: Like it's it's it's a really interesting.
- 13:43SPEAKER_02: I I guess it kind of works for me because I think the contrast between him taking it so seriously, like I'm a villain and a superhero.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:54SPEAKER_02: And this I'm gonna bring like acting to this.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: It's very handy though.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but in contrast with Tom Hardy just being like, I'm doing whatever the fuck I want, I'm Tom Hardy.
- 14:04SPEAKER_02: I think the contrast works.
- 14:07SPEAKER_02: Um, and it also kind of works within like most Marvel um and even DC villains are a little boring and forgettable.
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't even remember who the villain was in like Thor 2 a movie.
- 14:21SPEAKER_02: Well, it was the elf.
- 14:22SPEAKER_02: Um, I actually know everything about Thor the Dark World, but you know what I mean.
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: Um, I don't know who the villain was in like Justice League.
- 14:30SPEAKER_02: Uh, so I I feel like it kind of fits into that mold.
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: Not that every villain should fit into that mold, but I think Riz Ahmed knew his place.
- 14:37SPEAKER_02: He was like, I'm in this movie with Tom Hardy.
- 14:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this is I'm gonna go over here and do my thing, and just kind of let Tom Hardy do his thing, which is what everyone else in the movie did too.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's pretty much what everyone did, to be.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think you're right there.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: Um, so then it goes to like it cuts to a very, very serious Jenny Slate, though.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: And that initially, she's very serious, and then I realized what she was doing.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: And I could see like she's playing up to like she's playing that kind of I what you're saying with Rez Ahmed, I see what she's doing with it there as well.
- 15:09SPEAKER_02: Yes, I feel like she's doing the same thing of like, but she's uh yeah, yeah, but she's a comedic actress actress, so so she knows how to make the audience aware of what she's doing with that.
- 15:20SPEAKER_02: I I like while I certainly think that Rez Ahmed is capable of comedy and has done um he's done some very good comedy stuff.
- 15:27SPEAKER_02: He he he has had multiple very successful comedic performances.
- 15:31SPEAKER_02: I just this this one he just I think he just really knew his place the more that we're talking about it.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: Hmm.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: Uh okay, so then it cuts to uh then it goes to like Venom going uh from a passenger from the passenger has taken over in East Malaysia to a paramedic, and we see the paramedic like in uh like walking around looking like a zombie almost.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: Um and then it cuts to San Francisco, which is with that's when we get introduced to uh Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams, and so Eddie Brock, and what was her name?
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: Anne.
- 16:09SPEAKER_02: But he calls her Annie sometimes.
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, right.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: Um so they are they are a couple, they are engaged, we find out.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: Uh they're very in love, and he just looks like the ultimate uh he just feel he just feels like a like a fuckboy at this point, which like he just feels very she feels too good for him at this point.
- 16:30SPEAKER_02: That's what I I have many thoughts about this.
- 16:33SPEAKER_02: Um, well, actually two.
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: Um go ahead.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: I think that Eddie Brock is styled and like Tom Hardy portrays uh reporter very perfectly.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: Um, like I know these guys, uh, and they wear hoodies like that.
- 16:51SPEAKER_02: And uh Michelle Williams, this is like I this is gonna sound mean, but it's not like this is the only character I feel like I've ever seen her play that seems like happy and healthy.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: That's true, that is really true, right?
- 17:11SPEAKER_02: Like I just like it was just such a relief to see Michelle Williams finally be able to play a character that is like not completely traumatized, yeah.
- 17:23SPEAKER_02: And probably a character that Michelle Williams didn't like think about when she was trying to sleep every night.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she just like she can just let go of the character and not even like she didn't have to kind of uh go into some kind of method acting, which I feel like she is that person.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: She seems like that kind of person.
- 17:41SPEAKER_02: And I know, I do know that she also said that she took this role because she wanted to work with Tom Hardy.
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: So I think, yeah, I think that she actually she absolutely she wanted to work with like a known like artiste who's kind of like in Hollywood, like known as this, like, oh, you never know what he's gonna do when he shows up on set.
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: But she also was like, I want to do this movie that's gonna get me a lot of money, and I don't really have to think about it.
- 18:06SPEAKER_02: And I get to make it out with Tom Hardy, who is a very good and weird actor.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, it's a it's definitely like a role that's kind of unexpected for her to take, I feel like.
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: Not not the role itself, but like the style of film.
- 18:20SPEAKER_02: Oh, absolutely.
- 18:21SPEAKER_02: Um, she's not really someone who experiments with genres.
- 18:27SPEAKER_02: Like, I think that she kind of sticks to the very dramatic films.
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: Um, and is kind of like I think she's this is not to suggest that she doesn't have range because she is one of the greatest actresses working today.
- 18:41SPEAKER_02: Um, and one of the greatest actresses of her generation.
- 18:43SPEAKER_02: She should have an Oscar.
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: Um, and maybe it should be for this film.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: Um I don't agree with that.
- 18:49SPEAKER_02: Um, I'm being hyperbolic anyway, or or am I?
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: Um I don't think you are.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: Uh I won't answer that.
- 18:57SPEAKER_02: Uh so it's just like I forgot what my point was because I uh started saying that, but I I don't know.
- 19:06SPEAKER_02: Michelle Williams, really weird choice for her, but I'm glad that she made it.
- 19:11SPEAKER_02: She usually doesn't do things like this.
- 19:14SPEAKER_02: I'm glad she got a big paycheck because I can't imagine she gets big paychecks for other roles.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: No, I bet she gets minimal money for a lot of people.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 19:21SPEAKER_02: I mean, we know how much she got paid for the reshoots for all the money in the world.
- 19:25SPEAKER_02: So glad she got the venom money to balance that out.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: Um okay, so then it then it's start, then we all see we see it like opening with some music from Pusha T, which felt so out of place.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: It felt it did not suit this, it did not suit it.
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: And he's like driving, he's riding down on his motorbike and then Pusha T is playing in the background.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: It just seems ridiculous.
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: And then you find out he's a reporter.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: Um, and I said he looks like a YouTube reporter.
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 19:54SPEAKER_02: So this brings um one of my main questions, which might be answered at the end of the movie.
- 20:01SPEAKER_02: Um, is Eddie Brock's show, The Brock Report, is it an online show or is it on like a cable network?
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: I think it's on a cable network.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: I think it is it says in the corner, it has like some kind of logo that says like some fake MSNBC logo.
- 20:20SPEAKER_02: Okay, because he's like reporting to this guy who's in this big office, which okay, what major network has a building like that in San Francisco?
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: Um, it would be in New York, uh, which is fine.
- 20:33SPEAKER_02: Like, not that it's a nitpick, but it's fine.
- 20:36SPEAKER_02: Um and at the end of the movie, I think he mentions he says, Oh, the network wants to hire me back.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: Oh, right, yeah.
- 20:45SPEAKER_02: So, but it seems like such a YouTube show.
- 20:47SPEAKER_02: Like it kind of reminds me.
- 20:49SPEAKER_02: I I said I wrote in my notes that he feels kind of like the Brad Leone of uh journalism, the Brad Leone of Bonapetit, if you don't know.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: That is a perfect description of him.
- 21:01SPEAKER_02: Because you don't really know, like no Shana Brad.
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: I love Brad Leone.
- 21:06SPEAKER_02: He's a great joy in my life, just like Venom.
- 21:09SPEAKER_02: But he doesn't, Eddie Brock, kind of like Brad Leone, doesn't really have a beat.
- 21:13SPEAKER_02: Like he doesn't have a specific, he does not seem to have a specific space of journalism that he creates.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: He's very all over the place, would you think Brad Leone is?
- 21:21SPEAKER_02: Even more, yes, even more all over the place than Anderson Cooper, who I think still kind of has a like you know you ex you know what to expect when you watch Anderson Cooper 360, if that's still a show.
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: Um I have no idea.
- 21:34SPEAKER_02: You know, uh like I I don't know.
- 21:36SPEAKER_02: It just seems like all the clips they show of Eddie doing journalism is just like, what do you cover?
- 21:41SPEAKER_02: Like, are you a tech reporter?
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: Are you like a I don't know, are you a war reporter?
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: Like, I he also seems like a bad reporter.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: He doesn't seem like a good reporter.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: He doesn't seem like he's doing very well good a very good job.
- 21:54SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: And then he's making he seems like he's making so much money because his apartment is huge.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: For whatever.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: San Francisco is like one of the most expensive cities.
- 22:04SPEAKER_02: US and in the world, maybe.
- 22:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 22:06SPEAKER_02: So I don't know.
- 22:07SPEAKER_02: But it uh but so something that also kind of confuses me is that are they making it seem like his in a his apartment isn't in a nice neighborhood?
- 22:16SPEAKER_02: Like is he sub is he supposed to be rich?
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: I can't tell.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: I I I don't think it's supposed to be in a bad neighborhood per se.
- 22:23SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, I I like it just doesn't seem like like if he was supposed to be rich, like wouldn't they flaunt it a little more?
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:31SPEAKER_02: I guess I don't know.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: But even in a bad neighborhood, you're not gonna be able to afford that on no that like I don't know.
- 22:37SPEAKER_02: Especially in San Francisco.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: But then so like then they have their date night, and she is dressed really nicely, and he is dressed in uh like a a cheap shirt, like cheap uh checkered shirt that just doesn't he just looks very out of place in the restaurant.
- 22:54SPEAKER_02: He looks how a male journalist would dress to to dinner out with his girlfriend.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: And then they go back to the apartment and he spies on her emails, and that's when he finds out um about those like the deaths that are going on.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: Like the un what does it say?
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: It says uh unauthorized uh three deaths, which I'm guessing is like to do with the uh the rocket that crashed in on Earth.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: I don't know if it's like is that entirely clear that they do they make it clear?
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 23:24SPEAKER_02: Like you know, no, they don't.
- 23:27SPEAKER_02: And it doesn't really matter.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: No, it doesn't matter.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: I'm just I'm more curious if I I missed something there.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: No, I mean I missed that.
- 23:35SPEAKER_02: So like you saying that to me, that's the first time I realized that, really.
- 23:40SPEAKER_02: Um I thought I said I was gonna defend this movie, but so I don't think it's a bad thing necessarily.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: No, it's not.
- 23:47SPEAKER_02: It's not.
- 23:48SPEAKER_02: The the great thing about this movie is that also like the science of the symbiote, like they they don't really.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: They gloss over a lot.
- 23:57SPEAKER_02: They gloss it over, you know.
- 23:59SPEAKER_02: This isn't a science movie, and I think one of the issues with some of the superhero movies and just sci modern sci-fi is that they try way too hard to root it in the real world.
- 24:11SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah, I I really, really enjoy the MCU movies and I really liked Avengers Endgame, but in going so far out of their way to try to make the time travel make sense scientifically, it kind of ruined it.
- 24:24SPEAKER_02: It's like, well, you you could have just like had the back to the future jokes and then just like ended it there.
- 24:31SPEAKER_02: You don't need to explain to me how scientifically this could possibly work.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: This is already fake enough.
- 24:35SPEAKER_02: We don't need to exactly like I like there's a god from the sky.
- 24:39SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't I don't care about science here.
- 24:43SPEAKER_02: Like, do I care about science in the real world world?
- 24:46SPEAKER_02: Yes, absolutely.
- 24:47SPEAKER_02: Science is important, but we don't need to bring it to escape movies like this.
- 24:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: So then it goes to um Brock interviewing uh Friz Ahmed's character, and he's just like um and he's saying, Oh, you should um you need to silence those who ask the questions basically.
- 25:09SPEAKER_02: And he calls uh he calls everything Brock says fake news, which I don't know if was if that was a uh like a Trump thing at the time, or if it was just like something that they said and it just like very conveniently happens to be Oh absolutely because I I How long has that been going on?
- 25:26SPEAKER_02: Um forever, even before Trump was president.
- 25:29SPEAKER_02: Uh absolutely like they they definitely put that in the script on purpose.
- 25:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: So so this scene um reminds me of what you said about how Eddie is a bad journalist.
- 25:40SPEAKER_02: Um not only because he doesn't seem to have a specific beat, and you never know what to expect from him, um, but he I don't know, his interview style, like he he's kind of like stumbling and almost like pretending to be an idiot, uh, to the point where I'm like, are you an idiot?
- 25:59SPEAKER_02: Uh but he's actually like sort of getting what he wanted out of it, which kind of, yeah.
- 26:07SPEAKER_02: Kind of, but it's like, were you intending for this for him to actually answer this those questions, or were you just trying to get a rise out of him?
- 26:14SPEAKER_02: Like it's not clear what his motivations are here and if he was trying to do a good job or not.
- 26:19SPEAKER_02: I also wrote in my notes while watching this scene, I wrote that I'm assuming Tom Hardy interviewed Ronan Farrow for research and didn't take any of his advice.
- 26:29SPEAKER_02: He just did the opposite of what Ronan Farrow told him to do while playing an investigative journalist, um, which I absolutely think is probably true.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: Why why do you think that is then?
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: Just because of like how he's the complete opposite of Ronan Farrow.
- 26:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so he just kind of like I feel like uh an investigative journalist would come if they're going to ask someone those questions, they're going to have more evidence with them to back it up and to catch the person that they're interviewing in a lie.
- 26:57SPEAKER_02: So let's say, hey, look, I found this, these people are backing up the story, all of these other people too.
- 27:04SPEAKER_02: Eddie just saw an email.
- 27:06SPEAKER_02: He doesn't have any evidence, he hasn't seen anything yet.
- 27:09SPEAKER_02: He's just going on a hunt.
- 27:10SPEAKER_02: You can't just interview like the CEO of the company you're trying to like out when all you have is an email that you saw on your girlfriend's computer.
- 27:21SPEAKER_02: And like you, you just can't.
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: Like that just doesn't make any sense.
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, it feels like we know as much uh about whatever that email is as Eddie knows about what that email is.
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 27:32SPEAKER_02: Like this was definitely way too early to interview him.
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: It's like that's like a nucket of story that you start researching, but to start with interview, like like Ronan Farrow and like Jody Cantor, they didn't, when they were doing their Harvey Weinstein stories, they didn't like go straight to Harvey Weinstein to say, Hey, did you sexually harass and assault all of these women?
- 27:52SPEAKER_02: Like, that's not how you do it.
- 27:54SPEAKER_02: You you start at the bottom and then you go up.
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you build a case for it, at least.
- 27:59SPEAKER_01: Um I was gonna say that, but that's also what gets him kicked out of there, and then he gets and then he gets fired for that re very reason as well.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: Um and the boss says you boss says exactly what you're saying.
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: You can't be doing that, you can't just go on your hunch of what you're doing there.
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: You just which is which is great.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: It's so fair.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: I'm glad that the movie doesn't really take the position that he did the right thing there.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: I think everyone knows that was the wrong thing.
- 28:27SPEAKER_02: Everyone, uh everyone except Eddie.
- 28:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but then that's what also loses him, Michelle Williams.
- 28:33SPEAKER_01: She leaves him because she gets fired for this very same reason from her from her place, and then she um breaks up with him because she she says, like, you took advantage of me and you used me for this for to get the information.
- 28:46SPEAKER_01: Um, because he he's locked onto her computer and stole her email.
- 28:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's a really fair reason to pull off your engagement ring and break up with somebody.
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: And uh he seems like kind of shocked and then like more like a little more just like confused about that sort of situation.
- 29:05SPEAKER_01: I don't think he cares that much.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: It doesn't feel like that.
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: Like I like I said, Eddie is the only person in the movie who is aware that what he just did was wrong.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:16SPEAKER_01: Uh and then we see it, then it then it goes to like the the paramedic.
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: It goes back to the paramedic and they're eating an eel in the in a market.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: Um and that and then this venom character like just it could take over and like spikes everyone in the market.
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: Like with I don't know what those are, just some kind of spikes and no idea.
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't know enough about Venom, the character, to so I don't really either.
- 29:43SPEAKER_02: Um the my only other exposure to Venom is of course Spider-Man 3.
- 29:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:48SPEAKER_02: Um and I I think Topher Grace was fine.
- 29:52SPEAKER_02: The movie's bad.
- 29:53SPEAKER_02: Nothing wrong with Topher Grace's performance there.
- 29:55SPEAKER_02: Um but uh that's all I know.
- 29:59SPEAKER_02: So I think that scene is kind of important for establishing this is what this thing can do.
- 30:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and this is how dangerous is, but these scenes feel like they're from a different movie, which is why I also kind of like them.
- 30:14SPEAKER_02: Like they're not random because they have they serve a and a very important purpose because you have to know like what the what venom is capable of and how it works or whatever, but it's just like the tone of these scenes are so off from the rest of the movie, which is why I think it's great.
- 30:37SPEAKER_01: I wrote down that it feels like all of those scenes with Venom, um, when it turns into like a horror style thing, it feels very Sam Raimi, ironically.
- 30:47SPEAKER_01: It does.
- 30:48SPEAKER_01: Considering that it's coming from like a Spider-Man, like it's another Spider-Man sort of thing.
- 30:51SPEAKER_01: It's coming, but it feels very Sam Raimi, and I don't know if that's intentional that they've taken that and kind of run with uh I I would have thought he'd want to distance himself from that style.
- 31:01SPEAKER_02: I so so I do believe uh that the uh director um wanted it to have somewhat of a horror vibe.
- 31:09SPEAKER_02: He also wanted it to have like this kind of off-beat comedic vibe as well.
- 31:15SPEAKER_02: Um so that does make sense that Sam like it would have some it would remind someone of Sam Rami, because that's exactly what he is usually going for with his horror movies.
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: But I I really enjoyed all of those horror scenes.
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: I thought they were I thought they were great, everything to do with all those scenes.
- 31:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that that's that scene with the eels is really good and really violent.
- 31:38SPEAKER_02: Like you don't really see, you don't really see any blood or anything, but you're terrified of it.
- 31:42SPEAKER_02: Like it's very effective in what it's trying to do.
- 31:44SPEAKER_02: It's trying to get you, you know what's gonna happen to Eddie.
- 31:48SPEAKER_02: And even though Eddie so far is kind of a stupid asshole.
- 31:53SPEAKER_02: Um, he's hot, he's a hot, stupid asshole, but he's a stupid asshole.
- 31:57SPEAKER_02: Uh, you're like, oh my gosh, like I don't want this to happen to this poor guy.
- 32:01SPEAKER_02: Like he just got dumped by his ass.
- 32:04SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 32:04SPEAKER_01: I feel like I don't care enough about him at this point.
- 32:06SPEAKER_02: Oh, I I guess I just care about him because he's attractive.
- 32:10SPEAKER_02: Um and like hot, stupid assholes kind of uh that's that's definitely my my type.
- 32:20SPEAKER_01: I hope your boyfriend does not hear that.
- 32:22SPEAKER_02: No, he's he's not here.
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: But he knows it's true.
- 32:28SPEAKER_01: Um so then they go to like uh then it cuts to oh no, then the then Venom passes on to an old lady in the market, and it at that point it cuts to six months later.
- 32:39SPEAKER_01: Um and they're doing rabbit.
- 32:42SPEAKER_02: Which is pretty jarring.
- 32:43SPEAKER_01: Like I it's also not I don't think it's necessary.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: It's it's not I I I think what's in the future.
- 32:49SPEAKER_02: I think exactly.
- 32:51SPEAKER_02: I think that the only reason they do the time jump is so it would make sense that Michelle Williams has a new boyfriend who happens to be a doctor.
- 33:00SPEAKER_02: Um because like if it was like, oh, like this is the guy I'm dating and he can like give you an MRI um to check out your parasite, it would be like, what like you just you were engaged and you just dumped him and you already have a boyfriend who is veeps read Scott.
- 33:16SPEAKER_01: That doesn't make sense, and he's basically living with her at that point as well.
- 33:20SPEAKER_02: Exactly, exactly.
- 33:21SPEAKER_02: So uh six months is still a little bit still short, yeah.
- 33:25SPEAKER_02: That's that's pushing it a little bit, um, but it's a lot of it.
- 33:29SPEAKER_01: But it's Ray Scott and he's a doctor, so and yeah.
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 33:33SPEAKER_02: Veeps Reed Scott, he's hot.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: And he's very charming in this as well.
- 33:40SPEAKER_02: He is, he is.
- 33:41SPEAKER_01: So yeah, Riz Ahmed's doing I don't remember Riz Ahmed's character's type name.
- 33:45SPEAKER_01: Um Drake?
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: Something like that.
- 33:47SPEAKER_02: Drake.
- 33:48SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 33:48SPEAKER_01: I'll call him Drake.
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:50SPEAKER_02: I call him Drake.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: Okay, so he's doing uh they're doing rabbit trials, and they decide he decides that they're finally ready to do human trials though, which everyone is terrified about because they don't think they're ready for it.
- 34:02SPEAKER_01: Um in terms of like bringing the they say symbiote.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: I don't know how to say this word correctly still.
- 34:07SPEAKER_02: Because I've heard symbiote, symbiote, symbiote, symbiote.
- 34:11SPEAKER_01: I don't know which is the correct way, because it's it's thrown around constantly in this and said differently by everybody.
- 34:18SPEAKER_02: Is it like one of those words that you just kind of say it how you say it?
- 34:22SPEAKER_02: Like Caribbean, Caribbean, tomato, tomato, yeah, potato potato.
- 34:27SPEAKER_01: I'll say if any, yeah, nobody's saying patato.
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: Uh so anyway, yeah, he's like doing the sim symbiote uh trials of getting one into into rabbits, and then he thinks they're finally ready to bring them into humans, uh, which everyone is uh terrified about in the in in the lab, and they don't think he's ready for it, but he just wants to go ahead with it anyway, because he's the he's the villain essentially.
- 34:55SPEAKER_02: Um he's 24 years old.
- 34:58SPEAKER_01: Wait, what?
- 34:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so uh in the interview, I I didn't catch this the first um excuse me, three times I watched this movie, but last night.
- 35:07SPEAKER_02: When so when he's interviewing him, when Eddie's interviewing him for the first time, he says, Oh, 24, that's pretty young to like be so far ahead.
- 35:16SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, Oh my god.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: That explains like the shape, like how why he's so shaved down as well.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, he looks he looks very different to look.
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: Yes, only so shave, but yeah.
- 35:28SPEAKER_02: So Arisa Med playing way down.
- 35:31SPEAKER_02: I don't know why they felt the need to make him a 24-year-old.
- 35:36SPEAKER_02: It just made me feel bad about myself.
- 35:38SPEAKER_01: That's all yeah, and then me too.
- 35:42SPEAKER_01: And I think I think we're the same age.
- 35:45SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 35:47SPEAKER_01: Um then he goes to like someone robbing um Eddie.
- 35:52SPEAKER_01: Uh Eddie sees someone robbing the his like uh favorite shop from down downstairs or whatever, and then uh he's in the back and he watches it happen, and it's just some kind of like I don't know, they're like not a mob sort of situation, but they're taking they're like taking money every day, they I guess from the woman in there.
- 36:10SPEAKER_01: Um he sees it and he feels really bad for her.
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: Um and then he's like he's desperate for money himself, and he's like circling jobs in the paper, like some kind of 1980s movie.
- 36:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:22SPEAKER_02: It's incredible.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: And it's never brought up again as well.
- 36:25SPEAKER_02: It's just like that's no it's like that's I mean uh kind of similar to my job searches.
- 36:32SPEAKER_02: Like I don't look at newspapers, but I like look online one day and then I never bring it up or do it again, you know.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but you're also not like I don't know, you're suddenly getting off a job, like your job back, I guess.
- 36:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, or you're doing you're doing some kind of investigative research on your own.
- 36:52SPEAKER_02: I I I have to say I do love these uh convenience store scenes.
- 36:57SPEAKER_02: Um obviously, uh, we'll talk about the final scene of the movie, which takes place in the same place.
- 37:03SPEAKER_02: Uh super important.
- 37:05SPEAKER_01: Um but that that final scene is also the scene they use to promote the movie.
- 37:11SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 37:12SPEAKER_01: Which is strange.
- 37:13SPEAKER_01: I don't know why.
- 37:13SPEAKER_02: I forgot about that.
- 37:14SPEAKER_01: That's the final scene in the movie, and it's the that's the scene they use to promote the movie.
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: Because that's that's the one that I'd seen.
- 37:21SPEAKER_02: That's like it's it's interesting because that's also like the most of venom you see in light like that.
- 37:28SPEAKER_02: Like I you you like the final battle in the one where he's in the motorcycle getting chased by Drake's henchmen or whatever.
- 37:38SPEAKER_02: Um, one of them, but who every single time I see him, I think is Bill Burr until I'm like I thought that too.
- 37:43SPEAKER_00: I had to look at him and make sure it wasn't him.
- 37:46SPEAKER_02: I every single time he is on screen, every single time I watch this movie, I'm like, oh my god, I forgot Bill Burr is in this.
- 37:52SPEAKER_02: And then I have to remind myself this is not Bill Burr.
- 37:55SPEAKER_02: I'm so glad you also thought that it was Bill Burr.
- 37:57SPEAKER_01: I thought that I looked him up and he looks so different to Bill Burr.
- 38:00SPEAKER_01: He looks completely different.
- 38:02SPEAKER_02: He's just a bald white guy.
- 38:04SPEAKER_02: Um with I guess like similar skin tone.
- 38:07SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 38:08SPEAKER_01: Um he kind of sounds like him as well.
- 38:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:12SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 38:13SPEAKER_02: Uh, like they both look like they're from Boston.
- 38:15SPEAKER_02: Like, what can I say?
- 38:16SPEAKER_02: Um, anyways, so like all of you really only see him in very dark lighting.
- 38:22SPEAKER_02: So while you see Venom, you don't like really see him, if you know what I mean.
- 38:28SPEAKER_02: Um, so like that convenience store lighting is the most you see of Venom.
- 38:32SPEAKER_02: So they were like, we gotta like have people be able to see Venom.
- 38:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:35SPEAKER_02: So I think that's why they put it in the trailer.
- 38:37SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 38:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, oh yeah, I guess that's why they put it in the trailer.
- 38:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:40SPEAKER_01: Um, but I just when that when so when the first scene came up in the convenience store, I thought, oh, this is that scene that's gonna come up now.
- 38:46SPEAKER_01: I thought this is gonna happen here.
- 38:48SPEAKER_01: And then it doesn't, and I was like, oh, okay, why why did they put that in the trailer then?
- 38:55SPEAKER_01: And then it just and then it just kept not happening and not happening, and I've kind of forgot about it completely, and then it came up in the end.
- 39:00SPEAKER_01: I thought, oh, why'd they put it here?
- 39:01SPEAKER_01: Why this now?
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: I guess it makes sense if you're saying like they yeah, it needs to be at the end, so they finally reveal Venom and you can see him in the light.
- 39:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 39:13SPEAKER_02: Um but then that that is kind of weird that you point out that they put it in the trailer.
- 39:18SPEAKER_02: I didn't remember that.
- 39:19SPEAKER_02: Um I I I try not to like I try to only watch trailers like one time, so I don't think while I'm watching a movie, oh like this like this scene from this trailer has to come up.
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: It hasn't happened yet, because I used to do that all the time.
- 39:34SPEAKER_02: And it ruined a lot of movies for me.
- 39:36SPEAKER_01: I'm the same.
- 39:37SPEAKER_01: I I I'll only see it if it I tend to only watch the trailers now if they're if uh I'm in like a cinema or something watching it.
- 39:44SPEAKER_01: But it I remember the trailer that they showed for that.
- 39:47SPEAKER_01: That would they the trailer was that scene only.
- 39:50SPEAKER_01: So it was just like a teaser trailer almost of just that scene.
- 39:54SPEAKER_01: It wasn't the like the main trailer, I guess.
- 39:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 39:58SPEAKER_02: I I I do I do remember seeing like that shot of uh Venom and like top half of Tom Hardy's face um in in the trailers, but I don't think I really put it together when I was watching.
- 40:09SPEAKER_02: Like I wasn't thinking about it because I've like checked out with trailers for that purpose.
- 40:15SPEAKER_01: I think it's because it's the only thing I'd seen of the movie, that's what I remembered.
- 40:18SPEAKER_01: And then I'll just yeah, I guess I was waiting for it.
- 40:21SPEAKER_01: Um so like then they go, then there's like loads of overacting I put, and I can't remember.
- 40:27SPEAKER_01: I don't know if it's I guess it must be Tom Hardy, but I don't know.
- 40:30SPEAKER_01: It could be could be Riz Ahmed I'm talking about.
- 40:33SPEAKER_01: Um they they test oh it must be Riz Ahmed because it's uh then I said that oh they test Isaac, this character Isaac and deer.
- 40:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 40:40SPEAKER_01: Which is just an a horrible scene where they just he's that's when you really see get to see what Riz Ahmed's like, where he's just like this guy gets the symbiote in him, dies, and then the symbiote gets out, and he's like, okay, next next uh person in the room.
- 40:56SPEAKER_02: Let's get the next it's it's like really dark.
- 41:00SPEAKER_02: It's really brutal.
- 41:02SPEAKER_02: I I I also it it it's really interesting how how tragic this is within this movie that's kind of obnoxious and knows that it is because like he's like they're like testing on like really vulnerable people.
- 41:17SPEAKER_02: Like, isn't it mostly it's mostly homeless people?
- 41:19SPEAKER_01: I was gonna say, yeah, because then it goes to the homeless person, uh yeah, the homeless woman, yeah, and and mentally ill people.
- 41:25SPEAKER_02: So, like with it, so I I I appreciate that they were within the context of this movie, which I am pretty sure they were aware was going to have this vibe and tone.
- 41:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, they were like, let's also try to have something to say.
- 41:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:40SPEAKER_01: Doesn't San Francisco have like a big homeless problem as well?
- 41:42SPEAKER_02: Like I I I I'm not the expert on that.
- 41:46SPEAKER_02: I believe that it does.
- 41:48SPEAKER_01: Um, but so maybe that's why they went with that as well.
- 41:51SPEAKER_02: I I I I'm sure that it does, yeah.
- 41:53SPEAKER_02: And I also think that uh in the comic books comic books, he lives in San Francisco.
- 41:58SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 41:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, that was another thing I was gonna ask.
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: It's like what you like you said, like it should be in New York for him to be a journalist like that.
- 42:05SPEAKER_01: And then I was guessing I was gonna ask, like, because Spider-Man's in New York, why why didn't they just set this in New York?
- 42:10SPEAKER_02: Um, so I did some brief reading on Venom, like the comic.
- 42:16SPEAKER_02: And apparently he does live in New York, which is how he but Spider-Man is the first person to ever like have the Venom or whatever.
- 42:23SPEAKER_02: But I think that for the movie, they wanted it to be so detached from the Spider-Man movies and the MCU that they just went straight to San Francisco because they didn't want to give anyone any ideas.
- 42:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:36SPEAKER_01: Although it does that there are times where it feels like it's in New York, and yeah, to me, at least to an outsider, it does.
- 42:42SPEAKER_02: So I I guess I I've never been to San Francisco.
- 42:46SPEAKER_02: Um, but there are like shots, like when he's in the street, like at night, it kind of besides like the hilly parts, like there's this one shot.
- 42:55SPEAKER_02: I think the shot at the end of the movie when Venom says, like, I'm hungry, and he's like, I have a there's a place like close by we can go to and they go to the convenience store.
- 43:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:05SPEAKER_02: Like that scene kind of makes it look like New York.
- 43:09SPEAKER_02: Um but I I don't know, I've just never been to San Francisco, so I wouldn't really, and I don't remember it being so similar.
- 43:18SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't okay.
- 43:19SPEAKER_01: So that I just thought that was interesting, but yeah, I haven't been to San Francisco Cisco in like I don't know, 15 years or something.
- 43:25SPEAKER_02: So it could be I just know it's hilly.
- 43:27SPEAKER_02: I mean they capture that it's pretty hilly, so yeah.
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: Uh so yeah, Jenny Slate wants to tell uh Eddie about um everything that's going on because she feels really bad about it.
- 43:39SPEAKER_01: She's seen like she thinks it's awful and she needs his help.
- 43:42SPEAKER_01: So she goes she tells him he goes to he shows up at Michelle Williams' house, and she's that's when we find out she's he's dating Reed Scott.
- 43:49SPEAKER_02: Um a welcome presence in the most function picture for sure.
- 43:55SPEAKER_01: So when I saw him in that scene, I had a feeling he I had a feeling he would.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: Gonna come back.
- 44:01SPEAKER_01: I don't know why.
- 44:02SPEAKER_01: I just thought that oh, this is gonna be his one and only scene.
- 44:05SPEAKER_01: And I thought, oh why he's wasted in this.
- 44:08SPEAKER_01: But then I was glad to see him come back later on.
- 44:11SPEAKER_02: I I think that a lot of movies have done that to Reed Scott.
- 44:16SPEAKER_02: Like, I feel like he was really successful in beat Veep, and people were like, Oh my gosh, he's so hot.
- 44:22SPEAKER_02: And so then in the 2010s, he had like all these appearances in movies where he only had like one scene, and people were like, People are gonna be so excited that Reed Scott is in this, and then he never shows up again.
- 44:32SPEAKER_02: So it kind of like other movies that Reed Scott was in set a precedent.
- 44:36SPEAKER_02: I can't think of an example, but you're laughing, so it must be true.
- 44:39SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, I'm sure it is true.
- 44:40SPEAKER_01: I can't think of an example either, but that's I've probably got that in my mind.
- 44:43SPEAKER_01: That's that's why.
- 44:44SPEAKER_02: Which I so I think that this is also the fact that even Reed Scott's character in this is pretty essential to the plot.
- 44:51SPEAKER_02: Not essential, but he's a pretty important character.
- 44:53SPEAKER_01: I'd say he's very essential to it.
- 44:54SPEAKER_02: He is, yeah.
- 44:56SPEAKER_02: Um, so he's an essential character.
- 44:59SPEAKER_02: This movie has such a tight cast, which I really liked, which is really not common for superhero movies or movies with budgets like this.
- 45:07SPEAKER_02: Like it's really just Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, uh Riz Ahmed, Jenny Slate, and Reed Scott.
- 45:14SPEAKER_02: Like there's other side characters, like there's the lady at the convenience store, there's like Benny's boss, yeah.
- 45:21SPEAKER_02: And there, yeah, Bill Burr.
- 45:22SPEAKER_02: Um, but and and of course Venom is a character, but it's so tight.
- 45:27SPEAKER_02: And I think that's one of the reasons.
- 45:30SPEAKER_01: They all serve their purpose.
- 45:31SPEAKER_01: They all they're all there for a reason, as opposed to someone who's like a side character and just doesn't really have a purpose in there.
- 45:38SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 45:38SPEAKER_02: Like I I think that I'm personally I'm very drawn to like movies that and stories that like are kind of localized and small and feel big.
- 45:49SPEAKER_02: That's the kind of stuff I like the most, uh, which is why I think I uh one of the main reasons why I really like this movie, because it's just like it's a big scale, but it's also very small.
- 46:02SPEAKER_01: And it's that why you prefer like I don't know if you prefer them, but you like a lot of the like Thor Dark World and all those sort of things where it's a lot, it's smaller to an extent, but uh then yeah, yeah.
- 46:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I would definitely say like I would I prefer like Thor Ragnarok to like the Avengers because that's Oh yeah, and this but I think that's just a better film.
- 46:22SPEAKER_02: Well, exactly, but I would say like I also like I I I think I prefer the uh not like standalones because they're like all trilogies, but like I prefer the ones that focus on a character.
- 46:33SPEAKER_02: Like I like Iron Man more than I like The Avengers, the first one, you know?
- 46:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah because it's more focused.
- 46:40SPEAKER_01: You get more character development, I feel like as well.
- 46:42SPEAKER_02: And character development, that's why I consume movies and TV.
- 46:46SPEAKER_02: That's what I want to think.
- 46:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 46:49SPEAKER_01: Uh so okay, so then it goes to um he calls Dora a Jenny Slate's character, she sneaks him into the building, uh, and he walks around like taking all these photos, and he's just he's just walking around like he's never held a camera before in his life.
- 47:05SPEAKER_01: He's just like holding it so far away from himself and just like snapping.
- 47:10SPEAKER_01: So basically the only reason for that is so that you can see what's on the phone.
- 47:14SPEAKER_02: Yes, but also I have to I have to say, this is exactly how my dad takes pictures.
- 47:21SPEAKER_02: But he is a reporter, he should be but in his defense, he's a reporter and not a photojournalist.
- 47:28SPEAKER_02: Um so maybe he's just not like he's he's an all-around reporter, though.
- 47:33SPEAKER_01: We don't know that.
- 47:33SPEAKER_02: This is true.
- 47:34SPEAKER_02: We uh we don't know, but we do know that he's a uh host of a show, so he's usually not behind the camera.
- 47:42SPEAKER_02: So in his defense, he might be new to taking pictures.
- 47:46SPEAKER_02: Although this does appear to take place in the present, like in 2018.
- 47:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 47:51SPEAKER_02: So you'd think that someone would know how to take a picture on a phone.
- 47:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 47:56SPEAKER_02: But Eddie Brock doesn't know how to do that, like how he doesn't know how to do most other things.
- 48:02SPEAKER_01: Which is why circling things in the newspaper, I guess.
- 48:04SPEAKER_02: He's just like he just doesn't know how to exist in society.
- 48:08SPEAKER_01: He doesn't get tech.
- 48:09SPEAKER_01: No.
- 48:10SPEAKER_01: Um then so he's sneaking around taking the pictures.
- 48:13SPEAKER_01: He sees uh Maria, the homeless woman, and breaks her out of there, and she immediately attacks him.
- 48:21SPEAKER_01: And the symbiote like attacks and goes like straight into him and attaches to him.
- 48:25SPEAKER_01: He runs out and he's got all these like superpowers suddenly.
- 48:29SPEAKER_01: Um he's like running up the walls and like jumping out of the window.
- 48:33SPEAKER_01: He um then these these uh guards like get in the dune buggies and start chasing him, which is very, very funny because they're flying through the air in dune buggies.
- 48:45SPEAKER_01: I don't I don't know why they had them.
- 48:49SPEAKER_02: It it doesn't matter.
- 48:51SPEAKER_01: I know it doesn't matter, but I that's not even the vehicle.
- 48:54SPEAKER_01: Like I've never seen anyone use those as security.
- 48:57SPEAKER_02: No, it it doesn't make any sense, but visually it's funny, it's entertaining, and we love to see it because of that.
- 49:06SPEAKER_01: He hides in a tree, um and then he goes back to his place and he's eating everything.
- 49:13SPEAKER_01: And because he gets really hungry and he can't work out like what he wants to eat.
- 49:16SPEAKER_01: He's eating from the freezer, he eats like these frozen tater tots, he's or eyed tater tots.
- 49:21SPEAKER_01: But he then he goes to like the bin and starts eating like this leftover chicken carcass that it's disgusting, and then he like runs and throws it all up, and that's when you finally see like the eyes of uh venom in him.
- 49:33SPEAKER_01: He just like gets these like very intense eyes.
- 49:36SPEAKER_01: But then that's all you see of venom, you just see the eyes, yes.
- 49:39SPEAKER_01: It's all just still Tom Hardy, so it hasn't quite like taken over him yet, but I guess it's like working its way through him.
- 49:45SPEAKER_01: And then Riz Ahmed wants to up the testing.
- 49:48SPEAKER_01: Um, we find out, and he wants to like keep going because uh he finds out that the woman was dead, but then there's another guy who's like kind of uh taking to it well he, I guess, uh as well as they can.
- 50:00SPEAKER_01: Um then we see like the Hong Kong woman attaching herself to a little girl in the airport on her way to San Francisco.
- 50:07SPEAKER_02: This little girl, I have to say, incredible outfit.
- 50:11SPEAKER_02: Great art dress, the two red bows.
- 50:13SPEAKER_02: It's iconic.
- 50:14SPEAKER_01: It's so perfect for like scary, scary little girl.
- 50:18SPEAKER_01: That's what we want.
- 50:20SPEAKER_01: Like scary child, that's how you gotta dress them.
- 50:23SPEAKER_01: Very much like uh the shining twins.
- 50:25SPEAKER_01: That's why.
- 50:26SPEAKER_03: Yep, yep.
- 50:27SPEAKER_01: So yeah, then then we immediately we know like, okay, so there's more coming to San Francisco.
- 50:33SPEAKER_01: We know that.
- 50:34SPEAKER_01: Um so Michelle Williams is in her restaurant, in a restaurant eating dinner with uh Reese Scott.
- 50:41SPEAKER_01: They that's when he runs in, and here's where the fish tank scene happens.
- 50:48SPEAKER_02: Give Tom Hardy and Oscar.
- 50:50SPEAKER_01: Do you want to go over this scene because you love it so much?
- 50:52SPEAKER_02: So I I want to ask, do you know kind of the um history of the scene?
- 50:58SPEAKER_01: No, I know nothing about it.
- 51:00SPEAKER_01: I didn't know it was coming even.
- 51:02SPEAKER_02: Okay, so lobster tank scene.
- 51:04SPEAKER_02: So uh they were shooting this scene, or I think like rehearsing it on location.
- 51:10SPEAKER_02: And Tom Hardy was like, I want to go in the lobster tank.
- 51:16SPEAKER_02: I want to sit in it.
- 51:17SPEAKER_03: And they were like, Steve suggested it.
- 51:19SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 51:20SPEAKER_02: And but the problem was that it was like a real lobster tank with real lobsters inside it.
- 51:26SPEAKER_02: And they were like, Well, we can't have you sit inside the real lobster tank.
- 51:29SPEAKER_02: Um, and so they like on the fly had to, they like had to make a new tank that he could sit inside of, and they had to make like fake lobsters so he could do this like thing that he just came up with while they were her rehearsing the scene.
- 51:44SPEAKER_02: So that's all Tom Hardy.
- 51:46SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 51:46SPEAKER_02: Um, and I also think what's so special about the scene is that obviously because he came up with it, this scene is just proof that no other actor could have pulled this character or this movie off.
- 51:59SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 52:00SPEAKER_02: It absolutely works because of Tom Hardy and the scene in particular.
- 52:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he fully commits to every part of this role and he goes crazy, and it works so well for him.
- 52:11SPEAKER_01: And he is you're right, he is the only person that is per that is suited for that.
- 52:14SPEAKER_02: Like there's there's no one else I could think of that could do this that I could that I could see pulling it off.
- 52:23SPEAKER_01: Like I could see like early Nicolas Cage pulling it off.
- 52:25SPEAKER_02: Early Nicolas Cage, but then that would be like it would be such a different movie than it is.
- 52:30SPEAKER_02: I like it it would just be even more obnoxious, which I don't think we want.
- 52:34SPEAKER_02: Like, I think it works because there's this balance of absurdity and like kind of I don't know what the the other right word for it is.
- 52:44SPEAKER_02: It's like it's almost like we're gonna be really obnoxious and then it's gonna be a really mediocre superhero movie.
- 52:50SPEAKER_02: Like, you know.
- 52:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 52:52SPEAKER_02: I guess like we're not gonna be serious, we're just gonna be like really mediocre, but then we're gonna have these crazy scenes where Tom Hardy's in a tank and like talking to himself to a to a voice inside his head.
- 53:04SPEAKER_02: It's great.
- 53:05SPEAKER_01: I really want to know what else that scene was gonna be, otherwise, because other if it's not that, it's a very boring, nothing scene.
- 53:11SPEAKER_02: So, so what I'm not sure.
- 53:13SPEAKER_02: Um, I think that Tom Hardy just transformed it in a way that we might never know.
- 53:17SPEAKER_02: But I I think he was just like supposed to eat a lobster.
- 53:22SPEAKER_02: That was in the take because kind of like how um the woman in the scene in Malaysia um to eats the eel that's in the water.
- 53:31SPEAKER_02: Like because, like, remember how he's like in the restaurant scene, like when he's trying to eat other stuff and he's like, This is dead.
- 53:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 53:38SPEAKER_02: Um like I I think it seems like uh the venom wants the symbiote wants something living, I guess.
- 53:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I guess that was yeah, that makes sense.
- 53:49SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, that probably is what it would have been.
- 53:51SPEAKER_01: I just think that's a it he heightened that scene so much.
- 53:54SPEAKER_01: I thought that made it much.
- 53:55SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 53:55SPEAKER_02: And I and then you think like if he did that, what did he do in every other scene?
- 53:59SPEAKER_02: Like he must have elevated every other scene in ways that we will maybe never be aware of.
- 54:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 54:05SPEAKER_01: Uh so that they find out, like, um oh yeah, I wrote that.
- 54:10SPEAKER_01: I in fact wrote down right here.
- 54:12SPEAKER_01: I wrote, This is insane.
- 54:13SPEAKER_01: Tom Howdy is having so much fun.
- 54:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 54:17SPEAKER_01: He is loving this.
- 54:18SPEAKER_02: When he's relaxing in that tank, oh, it's it's beautiful.
- 54:22SPEAKER_01: Uh so then he's having like then all the horror stuff happens.
- 54:26SPEAKER_01: I also wrote down this is great, it reminds me of Sam Raimi.
- 54:28SPEAKER_01: That's that's when I wrote that down.
- 54:30SPEAKER_01: But then um, we find out that all the hosts are dying.
- 54:33SPEAKER_01: Uh so then they go, they're attaching to the humans, and they're not they're also like, but then they're the humans are dying and the hosts aren't surviving because of that.
- 54:40SPEAKER_01: Oh, sorry, no, the symbiotes are surviving either.
- 54:43SPEAKER_01: Um so then uh Michelle Williams uh tells Eddie that he has a parasite because we find out through uh testing and everything.
- 54:53SPEAKER_01: He oh, he has a he must have a parasite because Reed Scott's gonna test him.
- 54:56SPEAKER_01: And then he goes he goes back to his uh apartment and he hears like the music from next door and it's really loud and he can't take it, and he gets like really angry, and he's just like starts screaming, and he looks this is when he looks ridiculous.
- 55:08SPEAKER_01: I thought he was he went a bit like too over the top there.
- 55:12SPEAKER_02: I disagree, but do you also I also have a neighbor who plays heavy metal really loud at inconvenient hours, so I really related to that.
- 55:23SPEAKER_01: Um I relate to the loud neighbor, but because I have one above me that just like stomps around all the time.
- 55:28SPEAKER_02: But I I have a neighbor who is that type.
- 55:32SPEAKER_02: Like that looks like my neighbor.
- 55:36SPEAKER_02: He has the long hair, he's always wearing a metal t-shirt.
- 55:39SPEAKER_02: He just like blasts music at three o'clock in the morning on a Monday.
- 55:43SPEAKER_01: Are you just like standing there screaming like Tom Harley did?
- 55:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 55:49SPEAKER_02: Like he's lucky I am not infected with a symbiote.
- 55:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm sorry.
- 55:55SPEAKER_01: Then Jenny Slate tells uh Rizama or Drake about uh Eddie, and he feed uh he feeds her the symbiote at that point.
- 56:06SPEAKER_02: Thank god we don't see that.
- 56:07SPEAKER_02: That would have been too upsetting.
- 56:09SPEAKER_01: We just yeah, I think because she's su she's one of the main characters, we don't see it on her.
- 56:14SPEAKER_01: That's I guess that's why.
- 56:16SPEAKER_01: Um we only kind of see it in like the smaller characters.
- 56:19SPEAKER_02: Um we we only see it in the smaller characters who are like homeless people or mentally ill people who are suffering.
- 56:26SPEAKER_01: Oh that's so sad.
- 56:27SPEAKER_02: So sad.
- 56:29SPEAKER_01: We don't see it in the the rich scientists.
- 56:32SPEAKER_01: Um she's she's dead.
- 56:36SPEAKER_01: Yes, and I I was quite surprised that happened so early on.
- 56:39SPEAKER_01: I guess.
- 56:40SPEAKER_02: It happens really early.
- 56:41SPEAKER_02: I I guess it's it's also like not a very long movie.
- 56:44SPEAKER_02: Um, it's not a long movie at all.
- 56:46SPEAKER_02: It's a it's a great length.
- 56:47SPEAKER_01: Um that was another thing that that was another thing, actually, when you say it's not a long movie at all.
- 56:52SPEAKER_01: Like it's it's not a very long movie.
- 56:54SPEAKER_01: I looked at it at that final scene, and it said like um one hour thirty.
- 57:01SPEAKER_01: And then it's uh but it but then it said there's an hour fifty of the movie.
- 57:05SPEAKER_01: And I thought, hang on, what's going on here?
- 57:07SPEAKER_01: How are they gonna have 20 minutes more of this movie?
- 57:11SPEAKER_01: And then obviously there's like an end credit scene, but still, there was 20 minutes, including that end credit scene.
- 57:17SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 57:18unknown: Huh?
- 57:18SPEAKER_01: 20 minutes of credits.
- 57:20SPEAKER_02: I guess I always skip to the end credit scenes, so I don't realize how long those are.
- 57:25SPEAKER_01: I skipped to it, but then I started skipping through it just to make sure I.
- 57:30SPEAKER_01: Yes, I skipped the MM song.
- 57:32SPEAKER_02: Oh man.
- 57:33SPEAKER_01: I wrote down how I wrote down oh MM song.
- 57:37SPEAKER_02: It's it's you know, it's an MM song called Venom.
- 57:44SPEAKER_02: That's all I can say.
- 57:46SPEAKER_01: I started hearing it and it was he was going, he was just saying something about Venom constantly, and I just didn't care.
- 57:51SPEAKER_02: It's shocking every time you hear it.
- 57:52SPEAKER_02: You're like, wait, MM did an original song for this movie.
- 57:56SPEAKER_01: And the fact that nobody knows it as well.
- 57:59SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 58:00SPEAKER_02: No one talks about it.
- 58:02SPEAKER_01: Nobody talks about Eminem having a Venom song.
- 58:04SPEAKER_01: No, and then there's also I think there's a run the duel song after it.
- 58:08SPEAKER_02: I think that there is.
- 58:09SPEAKER_02: It the soundtrack is like I don't know why they so I think that their thinking here was probably what's the kind of music that Eddie would listen to?
- 58:24SPEAKER_02: It does make sense that Eddie would listen to this music.
- 58:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 58:27SPEAKER_01: So he's got push a T, MM, and run the jewels.
- 58:30SPEAKER_02: Yes, like that's absolutely the kind of music that he would listen to.
- 58:33SPEAKER_02: But does that mean that that should be the music in the movie?
- 58:37SPEAKER_01: It doesn't fit the movie.
- 58:38SPEAKER_01: It never does it ever fit the movie.
- 58:40SPEAKER_02: So, so the I guess, like, like a lot of things in this movie, the MM Venom song works almost because it doesn't work at all.
- 58:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 58:51SPEAKER_02: Um, but it's almost like too bad.
- 58:56SPEAKER_02: Uh that's like a probably my least favorite part.
- 59:00SPEAKER_01: The end credits are the least favorite part.
- 59:02SPEAKER_02: Anyways, we digress there, but I guess we already covered that.
- 59:06SPEAKER_02: But uh so Jenny Slate is dead.
- 59:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Jenny Slate's dead.
- 59:10SPEAKER_01: Venom's killing all the guards in his in uh in oh yeah, Venom starts killing all the guards in uh Eddie's home.
- 59:18SPEAKER_01: So they go they go to Eddie's home and he kills Venom, kills all the guards.
- 59:22SPEAKER_02: Are they being killed?
- 59:23SPEAKER_02: Is is does he like eat the heads?
- 59:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he eats one of the heads, kills most of them, and then Bilbur survives.
- 59:31SPEAKER_01: Um Eddie jumps out of the window and swing, well, Venom jumps out the window and swings it into another building and becomes Eddie again, and then he's like, and then the guy's like, Oh, how did you he's like very calm, but calmly says, Oh, how did you do that?
- 59:44SPEAKER_01: And he's like, Oh, apparently I have a parasite.
- 59:47SPEAKER_01: Which is just so gotta get me one of those.
- 59:50SPEAKER_01: It's such a cheesy line.
- 59:52SPEAKER_02: That's a but that's like the like you've gotta have.
- 59:55SPEAKER_01: I loved it, I loved it, I loved it.
- 59:56SPEAKER_01: I don't have an issue with it, but it's just it just made me kind of wince when I heard it.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_02: Um and that also felt like a line like that that feels very Spider-Man-y, like that's a that's so Spider-La.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_02: That's so spider.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_02: Which like there's a lot of like nods kind of to its origins being Spider-Man, and I think that's definitely one of them.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_01: Well, there's one very clear nod later on in the film.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it comes up one clear cameo.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_01: Um so then he um then he sees Venom in his reflection, and you finally see Venom's face.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_01: I think it's the first time you see Venom's face when it's in the reflection, and you you see like the two sides of you see Tom Hardy and Venom at the same time.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_01: So um he speeds away on his bike, uh, and then all these drones start attacking him, uh, which is very 2018 of having like drones.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_01: It's like, oh, what's big drones?
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_01: Let's let's have them in there.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_01: Uh he flies away on the bike, they go flying through the air, or like as as high as the dune buggies win.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_01: And they uh uh I wrote this chase is so excessive.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_01: Eddie crashes and turns into Ben.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_02: This is the one where like this one is the one where you can where you can kind of check out.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_02: Like it's like okay, I can take a quick shower, I can like make a sandwich.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like I've seen it before, it's fine.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_02: I don't need to see it again.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, it's it's not the best, it's not the most boring action sequence, but it's not the most exciting either.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't need to see another car chase, I've seen enough of them already in my life.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_01: I mean, he eats another guy's head off at this point, but he does, but um Do I need to see it?
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, he jumps in the water, he re-emerges as Eddie, and all this like it's just kind of boring.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_01: Like, there's not much happening.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_01: Uh Riz Ahmed gets angry that the symbiote isn't is dead and not uh Jenny Slate.
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_01: He's like fine about Jenny Slate being dead, he's angry at the symbiote being dead.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_01: That's the point where it's like, oh, he is really no, actually that's not like no, you because you realize that when he's killing the homeless people, but like um But you're like, oh, but he doesn't care that his co-worker is dead.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_01: He knows this person, yeah, she is dead.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_01: He scales a building at this point.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, he's getting this is when uh yeah, Brock scales the building as Venom.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_01: He hears a plane and he like screams and like falls off.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_01: He's like crying, not crying, but he's like falling off, and Venom is turning back into Eddie Brock again.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_01: And that's when you realize, oh, it's the sound that like kind of bothers him, like they can't handle the like loud noises or anything.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_01: Um you think oh he's gonna fall to his death, you don't think he's gonna fall to his death or anything, but um he like grabs on suddenly, finally, it's like Venom again, managed to survive.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_01: Um then he leaves a note inside the building for uh his boss ex-boss, and he says, like uh take like look at this.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_01: Um he leaves his phone with him, but he leaves the note and the boat is just like sitting there in a broken window, and the note is just there on the table.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_01: Not nothing is attached, nothing is like keeping it there, so it's it's gonna fly away, definitely.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_03: I didn't think about that.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_02: He just writes it, he writes it, but he he places it quite here's here's another example of Eddie Brock not understanding technology.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_02: He could have sent him an email.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_00: That is a good point.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_02: He probably has his former boss's number, he definitely has his email address.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_02: Send send the boss the pictures, dm it to him on Twitter.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_02: Like I send it to him in every tech not like with every piece of technology that you have access to before you like physically go there and leave it in a window.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_02: Like, I I don't know.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_01: Anyone could come in and take that.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_01: I guarantee the boss is not gonna be the first one in to inside there to a broken window.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_01: Like sit knowing there's a broken window there, they're gonna know there's a broken window.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_01: He's not gonna be the first in there to go see what's going on.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_01: Um, so yeah, he fights everyone in the building.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_01: Um, and I said, Oh, this is this is a great scene.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_01: I actually like the action sequence here.
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_02: Um, this one is pretty good.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_01: Then it's like all in the darkness and like fog and everything from what I think.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_02: It's a little more similar to the uh first scene we kind of see of the symbio in Malaysia, the eel scene.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_02: Like I think those are the ones that work the best for sure.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_01: Uh then so yeah, that's I that was the first time I was actually enjoying the action in this.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_02: The actions the the action is definitely more successful.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_02: The action is more successful when it's rooted in horror than when it's like trying to definitely the it's like the scene before, there it's trying to match the tone of the rest of the movie a little too much, so it doesn't work.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_02: Like I think it just works better when they're just like, okay, this is a completely this feels like a completely different movie, and that's fine.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_01: Um then so Michelle Williams runs into Eddie, Eddie, and takes him to the hospital because he uh she runs, she's like down at the spot in the building.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_01: She sees him, sees uh him like picking up one of the guards and gets scared, and then Eddie turns back into Eddie again.
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_02: Um and Michelle Williams is wearing an incredible outfit here.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_02: The plaid skirt, the laser, the turtleneck, the boots, incredible.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_01: I didn't I didn't think about it, but she looks like yeah, I guess so.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_01: I guess she does.
- 1:05:34SPEAKER_02: The costume, the costume design in this is subtly very brilliant.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_02: Like Eddie's hoodies, like you know, Michelle Williams's plaid skirt, it's incredible.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_02: Even Riz Riz Ahmed, I I guess you probably like I really pay attention to costumes and clothing and stuff.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_02: Um and I also really like Riz Ahmed's like kind of like he's kind of dressing like a tech bro, but wearing a blazer.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_02: So like he's always wear he's usually wearing this like zip-up hoodie with a collar not a hoodie, a zip-up sweater with a collar.
- 1:06:06SPEAKER_02: But he zipped it up all the way to show that he's a little bit pretentious.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_00: And then he wears And then he's got the blazer to the blazer.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_02: And it's like, why are you wearing that?
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, take me seriously.
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_02: I'm a 24-year-old CEO.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_02: Um, but I'm kind of in science tech, so that's why I'm wearing a sweater with a zipper, you know?
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_02: Um it's brilliant, it's great.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I noticed, yeah, the only one I didn't notice.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_01: Well, I noticed all the costumes, but I didn't like take too much thought about them.
- 1:06:35SPEAKER_01: I I I guess like, yeah.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_01: The only ones I did take I did think about was uh uh Eddie Brops because it just seems so out of place with the rest of them.
- 1:06:44unknown: Yeah.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_01: Well at least at least with Michelle Williams, if they were out of place.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, then then it then he brings up that the sound and the fire are his kryptonite.
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_01: And I'm surprised they got away with using kryptonite in a Marvel-based movie.
- 1:07:00SPEAKER_01: I don't know if there's any rules around that.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_01: I guess there's not.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_02: No, probably not.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_02: I I mean I I I feel like it's just so prominent at this point in our culture that DC is probably like any mention of something positive or whatever, like any mention of us that isn't like bashing our uh DC's cinematic universe.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_02: We'll take it.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_01: It just seems I I it just seems like it really threw me.
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_01: I was in school.
- 1:07:30SPEAKER_02: Has it been?
- 1:07:32SPEAKER_02: I'm wondering if it's I don't think it's been if they can use it, then it probably hasn't been copyrighted.
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_01: That's a good point.
- 1:07:39SPEAKER_02: Because there's also that three doors down song cryptonite.
- 1:07:42SPEAKER_02: I don't think they had to like buy the rights to use that song.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_02: That's true.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that word and that song.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_02: So they must have just like made a horrible business decision by not um copywriting that word.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I guess so.
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, Venom makes Eddie apologize to Annie at this point.
- 1:07:56SPEAKER_01: I've got written down Annie, I actually do write a name.
- 1:07:59SPEAKER_02: Annie! She has a name.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_01: I don't I don't remember hearing it until that point.
- 1:08:04SPEAKER_01: That's the whole thing.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't think you don't really I you don't really register her name.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_02: It's fine.
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, he says apologise to Annie, and he like I guess like that's when you see our Venom isn't all bad.
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_01: Like he wants what's best for him.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_01: Um so he apologizes to Annie.
- 1:08:23SPEAKER_01: Uh and then you see a drone following them.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_01: Um then the little girl shows up and infects Riz at this point.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_02: Creepy.
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_01: Very, very creepy.
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_01: It's it's creepy it's horrible.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_01: I loved it.
- 1:08:41SPEAKER_01: Um then there's a noise in the then they oh yeah, then they go to the hospital and uh she turns on the noise and gets the venom out of Eddie.
- 1:08:50SPEAKER_01: So that's when they they realize that's when you see, oh like that all it takes is that noise to get him out.
- 1:08:55SPEAKER_01: But um he gets out, uh you see uh the symbiotic venom inside another room like closed off, and then it escapes through a vent.
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_01: And then Eddie gets tramped by the guards.
- 1:09:09SPEAKER_01: And they oh, dog has venom.
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_01: A dog gets venom.
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_02: Yes, the dog briefly gets venom.
- 1:09:16SPEAKER_01: Which okay.
- 1:09:17SPEAKER_01: I guess I don't know if that was just a show that like it can attach to any kind of living thing.
- 1:09:23SPEAKER_02: I I guess so.
- 1:09:24SPEAKER_02: I I guess it's also like visually kind of a funny gag.
- 1:09:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I can't explain it.
- 1:09:31SPEAKER_02: If Venom just misses Eddie, and he will do anything to get back to his best friend Eddie.
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_01: But it feels like Eddie misses Venom as well.
- 1:09:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, oh absolutely.
- 1:09:40SPEAKER_02: This is this is this is my favorite part of the story because this is when it kind of starts becoming a bromance.
- 1:09:47SPEAKER_01: I think it like this is where it picks up for me.
- 1:09:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this is this is where the movie picks up picks up.
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_02: But I mean, uh like I think it picks up kind of it's like the lobster scene, and then it kind of drags, and then it's and this is when it starts to pick up, and you're like, Wait, like maybe this is a really good movie.
- 1:10:05SPEAKER_01: I think the first the first hour, I wasn't that sold in it, and then the more it went along, like, yeah, I guess the lobster scene, and then like bits and pieces here and there, but then like from here on I'm like kind of with it.
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_02: Um I think when I when you realize that the twist is that, oh wait, Venom actually isn't bad, Venom is a friend.
- 1:10:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's when I was like, Yes, I love this movie.
- 1:10:29SPEAKER_02: No matter what happens after this, I love that Venom is a friend.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:10:34SPEAKER_01: Uh he Oh, yeah.
- 1:10:37SPEAKER_01: I said that he's I said like Riz has Eddie, and and then he's like a Bond desk villain because he's explaining his whole plan to him while it while Eddie's like tied up.
- 1:10:46SPEAKER_02: This is this is Riz Ahmed's audition for Bond villain, and unfortunately.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_00: That is why he didn't get it.
- 1:10:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this is why uh Robbie Malik got it and not Riz.
- 1:10:56SPEAKER_02: Oh I know.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_00: Hey, so sad for it.
- 1:11:00SPEAKER_00: That's really true.
- 1:11:01SPEAKER_00: It does feel like he's auditioning for Bond, the villain.
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_02: Not saying, not saying that Riz doesn't deserve it.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_00: He absolutely No, I feel like he could be a good Bond villain.
- 1:11:09SPEAKER_02: He could be a good villain.
- 1:11:10SPEAKER_00: Not in this way.
- 1:11:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:11:12SPEAKER_01: Um, I also think he might be too good, too good to be a Bond villain.
- 1:11:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:11:17SPEAKER_02: Which another problem with this, he might have been too good for this, or not like, you know, he just maybe he just didn't understand the tone of the script.
- 1:11:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:11:26SPEAKER_02: Or the tone of everyone like working around him.
- 1:11:29SPEAKER_02: Or maybe he was just checked out.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_02: He just wanted to check.
- 1:11:32SPEAKER_01: It could have been a check a paycheck.
- 1:11:34SPEAKER_02: You know, we've all done it.
- 1:11:35SPEAKER_02: We've all have have had those jobs where it's like I get paid to do it.
- 1:11:39SPEAKER_02: I come, I do my job, and then I go home.
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm not naming any names for those ones.
- 1:11:44SPEAKER_01: Um Riz has a symbol.
- 1:11:51SPEAKER_01: Then Rin has Riz has the symbol in inside him.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_01: We find out, I guess we've seen that already.
- 1:11:56SPEAKER_01: We know that he's inside it, but then we see like the full version of it because he like yells at Eddie as the character.
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_01: Um does it have a name, the other one.
- 1:12:07SPEAKER_02: Um, I believe that it does, but do I know it?
- 1:12:11SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 1:12:12SPEAKER_01: Okay, so that it's not important if you haven't noticed it four times in.
- 1:12:17SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 1:12:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:12:18SPEAKER_02: I mean, I it's just like to me, it's just like the Riz Ahmed version.
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_02: It's yeah.
- 1:12:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I I also wrote like, what are the conditions for for it surviving inside a body?
- 1:12:30SPEAKER_01: Because I initially thought, oh, it survives inside like these really muscly, uh healthy men, but then it's or like healthy people, and then it's surviving inside Riz Ahmed who looks like a very skinny little person, and he doesn't seem to be I don't think it seems like he could be able to hold onto one of those.
- 1:12:48SPEAKER_02: So so this did make me wonder, like, had he been preparing himself for it?
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_02: Like, was he did he know that his body could handle it?
- 1:12:58SPEAKER_02: Like, I like had he already tested himself?
- 1:13:01SPEAKER_02: Like, I I don't I don't know.
- 1:13:03SPEAKER_02: Like it it it was just so strange to me that I I guess he wasn't really choosing to be infected by it, like because the girl kind of came up to him, but it was almost like he like wanted it.
- 1:13:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:13:16SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:13:17SPEAKER_02: I I definitely but I guess if he he definitely wanted it to infect him, but I wasn't sure if he like thought, oh shit, this is gonna kill me, like it did Jenny Slate.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_02: Um I'm not sure if he knew what was going to happen.
- 1:13:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I guess he was just like so set on the way of I think like he was so set on it being like, oh, this this needs to work, I'm gonna have it on myself because that's the only way it's gonna finally work and last in someone, maybe.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_02: Um we'll never know, and we don't need to.
- 1:13:48SPEAKER_01: Oh, then we find out that um yeah, the guys take Eddie to the woods to kill to kill him.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_01: Venom part Venom goes inside Michelle Williams.
- 1:13:59SPEAKER_01: We see the female version of Venom.
- 1:14:00SPEAKER_02: Sexy Venom, yeah.
- 1:14:01SPEAKER_01: Sexy Venom, yeah.
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_01: It's Venom with boobs.
- 1:14:04SPEAKER_01: That's what we see.
- 1:14:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Venom with boobs.
- 1:14:06SPEAKER_01: Um and Venom makes out with Eddie and then it takes over Eddie again, so passes it on.
- 1:14:15SPEAKER_01: It's so weird.
- 1:14:17SPEAKER_01: It's so weirdest scene in the whole film.
- 1:14:20SPEAKER_02: It's the weirdest scene, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.
- 1:14:24SPEAKER_01: It's great.
- 1:14:26SPEAKER_01: Um and then then we find out uh Venom is a loser on his planet because he says, I'm oh, I'm on my planet, I'm kind of a loser, like you, which is a great line.
- 1:14:37SPEAKER_02: It is and kind of brings back, like I think one of the first things that Venom says to Eddie is like when they're on that like bridge or something, like they're kind of like in the water when he escapes all those guys, and Venom's like, You are a loser, Eddie.
- 1:14:57SPEAKER_02: And then he's like, you know what?
- 1:14:59SPEAKER_02: I was like bullying you this whole time, but I was being mean because I'm a loser too, and it's really sweet.
- 1:15:05SPEAKER_02: It's a bro moment.
- 1:15:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's this is a bromance, and it's a beautiful bromance.
- 1:15:10SPEAKER_01: It's great.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, then Riz forces the launch of the rocket, uh, that's gonna be like sent back up into some into space, and then uh then Venom battles the other symbol on the rocket, and uh wrote told to get into the rocket.
- 1:15:29SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, so I guess like the other the other one wants him to go back with him.
- 1:15:32SPEAKER_01: Um I said this is a bad scene.
- 1:15:35SPEAKER_01: I don't know, I can't remember why it's a bad scene though.
- 1:15:39SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:15:39SPEAKER_02: I mean this whole thing is like like after the kiss thing, it's you know I one thing I do appreciate about this movie is that I I think that a lot of superhero movies have the tendency to make their final battle really, really, really long.
- 1:15:58SPEAKER_02: Like up to like 45 minutes.
- 1:16:01SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 1:16:02SPEAKER_02: For a movie like Avengers Endgame, sure, you've built up to it, but some movies just they don't need to last more than 10 or 15 minutes, and I think this one gets it over and done with.
- 1:16:14SPEAKER_01: It's like five minutes this one.
- 1:16:15SPEAKER_02: It's it's literally like five minutes.
- 1:16:17SPEAKER_02: I remember last night when I was watching it, um I kind of like was you know, I was tweeting about Venom, and then by the time I was done, like this was all over, and it was almost the convenience store scene.
- 1:16:31SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:16:32SPEAKER_02: And I was like, I checked out at exactly the time I wanted to check out at.
- 1:16:35SPEAKER_02: Like it's not that it's bad, like it makes sense, and it's like they the movie builds up to it, and it's it's fine, but it's just like who cares?
- 1:16:46SPEAKER_01: I think what I didn't like, Rizar Med immediately gone.
- 1:16:49SPEAKER_01: Then then it's then it's the two, and then Eddie's not part of the Venom at the moment.
- 1:16:53SPEAKER_01: It's it's the two it's the two symbols fighting each other.
- 1:16:58SPEAKER_01: I don't care enough to see them the two of them fighting.
- 1:17:01SPEAKER_02: Um it's just like uh what I appreciate they just like don't care, but it is hard to root for two uh completely computer-generated beings.
- 1:17:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:17:13SPEAKER_02: Um and they really just scrap Rizomed.
- 1:17:16SPEAKER_02: And I guess like the most appealing thing about Venom is that he's like when he's interacting with Eddie, and he's not interacting with Eddie at all here.
- 1:17:25SPEAKER_02: Um, so it's just kind of like I don't know.
- 1:17:29SPEAKER_02: It's it's also kind of confusing because it's really dark, and both of them are very dark creatures.
- 1:17:34SPEAKER_01: Um, so it's not they have like little speckles of light on them, and that's why that's the only way you can see them.
- 1:17:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so it's not even that it's hard to follow, like it's a pretty simple at all.
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_01: It's just kind of boring.
- 1:17:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's it's boring, but you know, they knew like And that's why I think that's why it's so short.
- 1:17:50SPEAKER_02: That's why it's so short.
- 1:17:51SPEAKER_02: They were like, we know, like this movie isn't about the action, this movie is about the relationship between Venom and Eddie, and that's why I love it so much.
- 1:17:59SPEAKER_02: Um I don't care about action that much, even though I like action movies.
- 1:18:03SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm just like, this isn't this isn't Terminator 2.
- 1:18:06SPEAKER_02: We don't need a 20-minute action sequence, and they knew that going into this.
- 1:18:10SPEAKER_02: And like, I'm sure, like I wonder, I'm genuinely curious now, like how long this whole sequence is in the script, because it's probably like less than three pages long.
- 1:18:21SPEAKER_01: It has to be because there's what what can you say?
- 1:18:23SPEAKER_01: Like all that all that happens in it is uh Eddie and Eddie and Riz separate from it.
- 1:18:29SPEAKER_01: There's the fight on the rocket, the rocket falls, uh Venom fall, then it explodes, venom falls down and lands, and then like and that's it.
- 1:18:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's all that happens.
- 1:18:40SPEAKER_01: Nothing, there's nothing to it.
- 1:18:42SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, that's when I wrote down.
- 1:18:45SPEAKER_01: So the minute the the rocket blows up with the other symbol in it, Eddie falls in the ocean, um, and then I wrote down, how is there still 20 minutes left?
- 1:18:54SPEAKER_01: That's when so that's when I checked the time.
- 1:18:56SPEAKER_01: So the end of the movie.
- 1:18:58SPEAKER_02: I guess I guess I weren't you expecting there to be more action here?
- 1:19:03SPEAKER_01: Like, were you disappointed or I was confused more than anything because if it had ended there, uh, and that would have that was it, that's fine.
- 1:19:12SPEAKER_01: I just was confused by the 20 minutes that was still left of whatever was gonna come.
- 1:19:16SPEAKER_01: So it wasn't like oh, there's gonna be five minutes of credits or something.
- 1:19:18SPEAKER_01: It can't be that much.
- 1:19:20SPEAKER_01: Maybe seven minutes or something like that.
- 1:19:22SPEAKER_01: How much can it realistically be?
- 1:19:24SPEAKER_02: So so you weren't like, oh, this action sequence, this final action sequence was like so short and disappointing.
- 1:19:30SPEAKER_02: Like, I can't believe they do something bigger, or just like how the hell is there more movie left?
- 1:19:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think because I I think I'm kind of the same as you as like I don't want too much of an action sequence at the end, I don't really care enough about that side of it.
- 1:19:44SPEAKER_01: I think I yeah, I prefer the story, the character arcs, and everything.
- 1:19:47SPEAKER_01: I don't uh I can take or leave the action.
- 1:19:50SPEAKER_01: Uh so yeah, to to have that five-minute sequence, and I also didn't care about the two of them fighting, so I was like, yeah, fine, whatever.
- 1:19:57SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, so that there's somehow 20 minutes left, but it's like that's when you see Stan Lee.
- 1:20:04SPEAKER_01: That's the point where we see Stanley and it made me sad to see him in there.
- 1:20:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:20:11SPEAKER_02: Um I also didn't know he was in it.
- 1:20:15SPEAKER_02: Uh it was also, I feel like most of his cameos are earlier in the movies.
- 1:20:22SPEAKER_02: Like this is a really, really late.
- 1:20:23SPEAKER_02: I think this might be the latest cameo he's ever done.
- 1:20:26SPEAKER_02: Or is he in the final credits of one?
- 1:20:29SPEAKER_02: Maybe possibly.
- 1:20:30SPEAKER_01: But it's it's like literally right before that final scene.
- 1:20:33SPEAKER_01: He goes, Yeah, as he's going into the into the convenience store.
- 1:20:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:20:37SPEAKER_01: Um don't remember what happens in the scene.
- 1:20:40SPEAKER_01: He says something to him, but I can't remember what.
- 1:20:42SPEAKER_02: I don't remember either.
- 1:20:43SPEAKER_02: He's just kind of like, yeah.
- 1:20:45SPEAKER_01: Oh, I think oh, Venom says, like, oh, he seems like an interesting person.
- 1:20:49SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:20:50SPEAKER_01: Um then he fights the robber inside, and that's the scene that I'd already seen where it's just like the recurring thing of like they go back into there, Venom fights the robber and tells him to like take care, like be careful or something.
- 1:21:04SPEAKER_01: And then does he I can't remember if he does he eat him at the end?
- 1:21:07SPEAKER_01: I can't remember.
- 1:21:08SPEAKER_02: I don't think so.
- 1:21:09SPEAKER_02: I think he just scares him off.
- 1:21:10SPEAKER_02: He just scares him off.
- 1:21:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I think that Eddie and Venom kind of, you know how they made like they kind of made a path.
- 1:21:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you've seen them make the path.
- 1:21:17SPEAKER_02: But like, we're not gonna eat any heads.
- 1:21:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:21:20SPEAKER_02: And Venom's like he's about to.
- 1:21:22SPEAKER_02: From my member.
- 1:21:23SPEAKER_02: So he's definitely just using it as an intimidation tactic, which is clearly very effective.
- 1:21:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think anyone would be scared of that.
- 1:21:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:21:31SPEAKER_01: Um, then it ends and it cuts the MM's MM's MM song.
- 1:21:36SPEAKER_01: I skipped ahead.
- 1:21:37SPEAKER_02: So I do have to say, um, when they walk into the convenience, or what I when I say they, I mean Eddie and Venom.
- 1:21:49SPEAKER_02: Um because they are, of course, one person, but they are also two people.
- 1:21:53SPEAKER_02: Uh so Eddie says to Venom when they walk in, he says, What culinary delights will tickle the pickle tonight?
- 1:22:02SPEAKER_01: Yes, I forgot that line.
- 1:22:04SPEAKER_02: Yes, I have never forgotten it.
- 1:22:06SPEAKER_02: I think about it all the time.
- 1:22:08SPEAKER_02: I say it in my daily life.
- 1:22:10SPEAKER_02: Um, and I think it's like something like that.
- 1:22:13SPEAKER_02: Like, that's not coming from a bad script.
- 1:22:15SPEAKER_02: Like, that's a that's a very funny line.
- 1:22:17SPEAKER_01: Also, that's a bad thing to say.
- 1:22:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:22:20SPEAKER_01: That's a bright little thing to say.
- 1:22:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:22:23SPEAKER_02: Um tickle the pickle.
- 1:22:25SPEAKER_02: I just, and just to think of Venom having a pickle, you know, it it just it it opens up so many doors.
- 1:22:32SPEAKER_02: Um, in my mind, and hopefully for the sequel, Let There Be Carnage.
- 1:22:37SPEAKER_01: Which we need to get to now, which is uh the end credits, the after credit scene where Oh my god.
- 1:22:44SPEAKER_01: Oh, so I wrote down about halfway through this movie, where is Woody Harrelson?
- 1:22:49SPEAKER_02: Okay, so so so you knew that Woody Harrelson had some kind of appearance in the movie.
- 1:22:54SPEAKER_01: I thought he had a big role in this.
- 1:22:57SPEAKER_02: Oh my god!
- 1:22:58SPEAKER_01: I and he hadn't shown up, and I wrote down where is Woody Harrelson?
- 1:23:02SPEAKER_02: Incredible.
- 1:23:03SPEAKER_01: I thought he was a main role in this.
- 1:23:06SPEAKER_01: Um then he goes to the credits and I realized oh he's gonna be the after credit sequence.
- 1:23:12SPEAKER_01: He shows up, uh so Eddie goes to interview him in the prison.
- 1:23:16SPEAKER_01: He's in a he's in like some kind of cage thing.
- 1:23:19SPEAKER_01: Um, and he's wearing the worst wig I have ever seen in my life.
- 1:23:23SPEAKER_02: It's it he looks like a child, but like an like a I don't know.
- 1:23:31SPEAKER_01: Like it I wrote down he looks like Sajo Bob.
- 1:23:33SPEAKER_01: That's oh my god.
- 1:23:36SPEAKER_01: He's it's a big curly redhead wig.
- 1:23:39SPEAKER_01: It does not sue him at all.
- 1:23:42SPEAKER_02: He looks like he's a like a cartoon child who like just became a human and realized that they've like been a child on TV as a cartoon for like 20 years.
- 1:23:54SPEAKER_02: Yes, it's like if Bart Sipson like became a human being and was like, oh my gosh, I'm like 40 years old, even though I've been a child on TV for 30 years.
- 1:24:03SPEAKER_01: Oh, that is a perfect description of what it is, and like I that had me so excited to see more of his character.
- 1:24:09SPEAKER_01: I want to I can't wait for the sequel with him.
- 1:24:12SPEAKER_01: I cannot wait for that.
- 1:24:13SPEAKER_01: It's whatever it's gonna be.
- 1:24:15SPEAKER_02: It's definitely Woody Harrelson can definitely pull off what Rizamed couldn't.
- 1:24:20SPEAKER_02: Like Woody Harrelson of anyone can pull off being the a villain with the same tone and approach as Tom Hardy has to the sequel.
- 1:24:30SPEAKER_01: Oh, definitely.
- 1:24:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's gonna be incredible.
- 1:24:33SPEAKER_01: I'm so glad that he I'm so glad that they've made enough money that he can be they can get the sequel with him in it.
- 1:24:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:24:38SPEAKER_01: Because they have him at the end and like not use him.
- 1:24:41SPEAKER_01: It's it's all it would have almost gone the like Paul Giamatti route of like the Rhino character in the other one where where I got really excited to see him play that and then it's never materialized.
- 1:24:52SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 1:24:53SPEAKER_02: Um I uh I'm very much obviously looking forward to this because I think I think it will actually be if they can pull off the tone in a way that more people understand it.
- 1:25:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:25:06SPEAKER_02: Like Woody Harrelson will be the reason why it works, like it works for more people.
- 1:25:11SPEAKER_02: Um, I think that like this movie, I kind of wrote down like one of the I think that Venom either works for you or it doesn't.
- 1:25:21SPEAKER_02: Like it's it's a tone that isn't right for everyone.
- 1:25:23SPEAKER_02: I mean, every you could say that about every movie, every like form of media, yeah.
- 1:25:28SPEAKER_02: Um, or art or whatever.
- 1:25:30SPEAKER_02: Like it either works for you or it doesn't, but this one, like you can't really convince someone who thought it was bad that it's good, or vice versa.
- 1:25:38SPEAKER_02: Like, no one can convince me that it's bad.
- 1:25:41SPEAKER_02: Like, um like if they just get it though.
- 1:25:44SPEAKER_00: I do get it.
- 1:25:45SPEAKER_02: Um, it's just a very specific tone that you either like or you don't, and there's not really anything you can do about it.
- 1:25:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:25:55SPEAKER_01: I think I'm realizing like why not why, I think I'm realizing that I enjoy these types of movies more than I thought I initially did.
- 1:26:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:26:05SPEAKER_02: Because like I I I think I've also in the past couple years, and because of Venom in particular, have realized that I enjoy these kind of like silly, um not serious, uh, not taking them seriously.
- 1:26:20SPEAKER_02: Idiosyncratic movies that kind of that are kind of inspired by like these big studio movies of the 90s that were trying to be serious, but were kind of stupid, um, because they were just like so studio-y and like following such a strict formula.
- 1:26:37SPEAKER_02: Like this one is I I I just I feel like it's very very inspired by a lot of stuff from the 90s, but it's like smart.
- 1:26:46SPEAKER_02: I think this movie is a lot smarter than people give it credit for.
- 1:26:49SPEAKER_01: I because it's about I agree with that.
- 1:26:52SPEAKER_02: It's about uh relate, like it's about this like really unique relationship with something that's like take taking over this man's body, and he learns to they both learn to work with each other.
- 1:27:07SPEAKER_02: I as I guess as someone this sounds so so obnoxious, but as someone with like incredibly bad social anxiety and just like a lot of anxiety in general, I found it like those moments when Venom's like, what are you doing?
- 1:27:19SPEAKER_02: You're embarrassing us.
- 1:27:21SPEAKER_02: Why did you say that?
- 1:27:22SPEAKER_02: Like, that's like really that's the voice in my head, and I like found that like really relatable to the point where I was like, Oh, like I guess like if Eddie can make it work with Venom, like maybe I can also overcome my anxiety.
- 1:27:37SPEAKER_00: Because at least really great point about that.
- 1:27:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because at least my anxiety isn't like eating people's heads off, you know.
- 1:27:44SPEAKER_02: Like, I I can manage this, I can do it.
- 1:27:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's great.
- 1:27:49SPEAKER_01: I think you've kind of covered uh what I was gonna ask, which is why why you love it so much.
- 1:27:54SPEAKER_01: I think you've kind of covered gone over that.
- 1:27:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, here's let me go over some other notes, but I pretty I think I pretty much Said everything I wanted to say.
- 1:28:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:28:01SPEAKER_02: I I mean, I I do say I think it's one of the most misunderstood movies of all time because so many people, critics in particular, did not understand the tone.
- 1:28:11SPEAKER_02: I'm quite frankly surprised that so many critics that there weren't a lot of critics who connected with it.
- 1:28:18SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:28:18SPEAKER_02: Um, I guess it's because I wasn't one of the ones who was invited to press screening, which is a huge mistake on someone's part.
- 1:28:25SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, you would have bummed up the rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
- 1:28:29SPEAKER_02: And so I guess I guess I didn't really say so.
- 1:28:32SPEAKER_02: The reason I don't think it's a bad movie at all.
- 1:28:34SPEAKER_02: I think that it's actually a good movie.
- 1:28:36SPEAKER_02: Like it's not great.
- 1:28:37SPEAKER_02: It's not, it's not even mediocre.
- 1:28:39SPEAKER_02: Like it's almost like so good because it's like trying to be mediocre, but it's too clever to be mediocre.
- 1:28:45SPEAKER_02: I think it was received so poorly by critics, like I mean, audiences liked it, they kept seeing it.
- 1:28:51SPEAKER_02: Um, but I think it was received really poorly by critics because I think because of the cast being Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed, and just because of the history of Venom in general, um I think people were expecting it to be a way more serious movie than it was, and I think that they thought that it was trying to be a serious movie.
- 1:29:13SPEAKER_02: I don't I think that a lot of people who like a lot of critics who saw it, um, I mean, I can't speak for everyone.
- 1:29:20SPEAKER_02: Like some people just don't get it, some people just didn't like it, and that's totally fine.
- 1:29:24SPEAKER_02: But I think a lot of people think that it is trying to be a great superhero movie that has a similar tone to like the Dark Knight trilogy.
- 1:29:34SPEAKER_02: It's not that at all.
- 1:29:35SPEAKER_01: I'm so glad it's not that.
- 1:29:36SPEAKER_01: It would not work.
- 1:29:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it wouldn't work, but I think because of just like Venom's a very dark, like dark character.
- 1:29:44SPEAKER_02: Um, I mean, I'm not super familiar with Venom, but I think people were just expecting it to be like a serious dramatic action movie, and it's just it's just not that at all.
- 1:29:55SPEAKER_02: So I think all these expectations made people um have receive it poorly, honestly.
- 1:30:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:30:03SPEAKER_02: Um let's see, what else did I have to say?
- 1:30:06SPEAKER_02: I think that's pretty much pretty much what I have to say.
- 1:30:09SPEAKER_02: I think that it is a genuinely my favorite Tom Hardy performance.
- 1:30:13SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 1:30:14SPEAKER_02: I I I think that it's a little bit similar to Inception, where he's just kind of doing his thing, but like Inception, he's toning it down a bit.
- 1:30:26SPEAKER_02: Um because it's like it was like Inception, he has to yeah, he has to tone it down for that.
- 1:30:31SPEAKER_02: He has to tone it down because it's Christopher Nolan, who probably is a little more in control than his actors.
- 1:30:38SPEAKER_02: Um, and he makes them stick to his scripts.
- 1:30:41SPEAKER_02: Um, but he was also with like DiCaprio and all these like other people who were way more famous than him, and it was like his first big studio movie.
- 1:30:48SPEAKER_02: So um, but I mean he's the star of Inception, like he's like the best part of the stuff.
- 1:30:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he is the best part of that.
- 1:30:55SPEAKER_02: But I think that it's this is what he's always wanted to do.
- 1:31:00SPEAKER_04: Um, doing it.
- 1:31:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he spent all this time doing all these, like besides this means war, he spent all this like pretty much the entire 2010s doing like his first decade as a famous actor, getting work, like doing all these like really, really serious dramas, like yeah, but being really weird in them.
- 1:31:23SPEAKER_02: And this movie is a weird movie that he gets to be weird in, and I think that's Tom Hardy, what Tom Hardy was meant to do.
- 1:31:29SPEAKER_01: Okay, so I'm just gonna go over, I'm gonna read some of the reviews.
- 1:31:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:31:32SPEAKER_01: Uh just like some some of the headlines, which you've probably read them already, or you could so the evening standard in London, the London Evening Standard said, uh Sony, overly intent on empire building, has jettisoned a crucial ingredient, bite.
- 1:31:46SPEAKER_01: Which I don't agree with there.
- 1:31:49SPEAKER_01: I don't think it's missing a fight.
- 1:31:51SPEAKER_02: Um if anything, that's the one thing that it has going for it.
- 1:31:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:31:58SPEAKER_01: Um Richard Roper said that uh it's a tone-deaf, uneven, and maddened maddening, maddeningly dumb clunker that never settles on an identity all the way to the closing phrase.
- 1:32:09SPEAKER_01: Um I think that's what a lot of people saw in it.
- 1:32:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I think I think that this isn't completely inaccurate, but I think that like I think that it's uneven on purpose because it's kind of intentionally uneven because it's like just deposing this relationship between Venom and Eddie.
- 1:32:30SPEAKER_02: Like I I think that that was very intentional.
- 1:32:34SPEAKER_02: Um maybe it wasn't, but even if it wasn't brilliant, and they were still thinking about it in a way.
- 1:32:40SPEAKER_02: Um but a lot of people don't like movies that are all over the place, and that's fine.
- 1:32:46SPEAKER_02: Um, but I think they could do I hope I'm hoping that in the sequel with like we discussed with Woody Harrelson, like the tone will kind of blend a little better.
- 1:32:57SPEAKER_01: I think it will, and I think because Andy Circus is directing it as well.
- 1:33:00SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's oh my god, I forgot about that.
- 1:33:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's gonna because he knows how to blend that tone of like the two characters as well.
- 1:33:07SPEAKER_01: He's gonna he's gonna I think that's why he was picked to do it as well.
- 1:33:11SPEAKER_02: Andy circus knows how to do this more than anyone.
- 1:33:14SPEAKER_02: Like Gollum, Gollum is that's the perfect very yeah, Gollum is the perfect example.
- 1:33:19SPEAKER_02: Like Gollum is obnoxious and very funny, but also this like tragic creature in this like very dramatic uh universe.
- 1:33:30SPEAKER_02: I I cannot wait.
- 1:33:32SPEAKER_02: I think I think that Venom 2 is gonna make a lot of people look back on Venom.
- 1:33:37SPEAKER_02: I agree with yeah, think that it's like realize, oh, this is actually better than I thought it was.
- 1:33:43SPEAKER_01: Great.
- 1:33:44SPEAKER_01: Okay, so let's talk about let's go over to like the final segment, which is the uh I want to talk about the movie that you think is bad that everyone thinks is great.
- 1:33:54SPEAKER_02: Okay, so I had a hard time picking one because I feel like a lot of the movies that I would say are now movies that other people have like publicly and confidently said, I don't like this movie and I don't think it's good.
- 1:34:08SPEAKER_02: And one of the ones that I want to say I think would be trouble for me.
- 1:34:15SPEAKER_02: So I'm gonna go with Gravity.
- 1:34:18SPEAKER_01: Um I'm on board with that as well.
- 1:34:21SPEAKER_02: I like so I think Gravity is one of those movies um where like other people also have the same take, but for me, I guess it's significant to me because Alfonso Coron is one of my favorite filmmakers.
- 1:34:37SPEAKER_02: Um and I had just had a terrible experience seeing this movie in theaters.
- 1:34:44SPEAKER_02: Um it made me feel very sick, in fact.
- 1:34:48SPEAKER_02: I so I saw it by myself.
- 1:34:50SPEAKER_02: I didn't have any friends who wanted to see it.
- 1:34:52SPEAKER_02: I had just moved to New York City.
- 1:34:54SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:34:54SPEAKER_02: Um and and I I mean I also prefer seeing movies by myself.
- 1:34:59SPEAKER_02: Um but I I went to see it one very, very hot afternoon in Manhattan.
- 1:35:05SPEAKER_04: Oh no.
- 1:35:06SPEAKER_02: And I stepped out of the theater and I immediately threw up in a public trash can.
- 1:35:12SPEAKER_02: I was like, like I felt like like space movies like that make me like while I can admire the filmmaking, I just don't like it.
- 1:35:20SPEAKER_02: It's my personal taste.
- 1:35:21SPEAKER_02: It makes me feel uncomfortable, it makes me feel physically ill.
- 1:35:25SPEAKER_02: Um and I just didn't care about Sandra Bullock's character at all.
- 1:35:30SPEAKER_02: I like I just and like why would you kill off George Clooney in the first 10 minutes?
- 1:35:35SPEAKER_02: Like that was so obnoxious.
- 1:35:37SPEAKER_02: I just like why was he even in the movie?
- 1:35:39SPEAKER_02: Like I'm sure he got a nice paycheck, but what the fuck?
- 1:35:43SPEAKER_02: Like, why?
- 1:35:44SPEAKER_02: I just didn't find the story engaging in any way, especially compared to a movie I don't even like that much, but like Interstellar, like that's how you do a space movie.
- 1:35:53SPEAKER_02: Like that's interstellar.
- 1:35:54SPEAKER_01: Interstellar's better, but yeah, I uh it's not another I kind of don't love that either.
- 1:35:58SPEAKER_02: I I don't love Interstellar either, but it gravity kind of makes me prefer it like makes me like Interstellar.
- 1:36:05SPEAKER_01: Did you see gravity in 3D as well?
- 1:36:07SPEAKER_01: Is that another oh interesting?
- 1:36:09SPEAKER_01: Okay, so I thought in three I thought in 3D and I felt so ill afterwards.
- 1:36:13SPEAKER_01: Uh like you, I didn't throw up, but I felt like I was gonna throw up.
- 1:36:17SPEAKER_01: And I don't I thought it was just gonna be good because of the 3D, but maybe like I guess it's just the whole thing.
- 1:36:22SPEAKER_02: I guess like one of my favorite things about Afonso Coron is his ability to like just like the things he can do with a camera.
- 1:36:31SPEAKER_02: Yes, like and like all these long shots, like children in children of dead.
- 1:36:35SPEAKER_02: Even in even in like Harry Potter, like he he's not uh before gravity.
- 1:36:42SPEAKER_02: I was like, this is not a director I think of for visual effects.
- 1:36:46SPEAKER_02: Like this is a director I think of telling these like really dark, like tragic stories with like that are visually stunning too.
- 1:36:56SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:36:56SPEAKER_01: That was that was great.
- 1:36:57SPEAKER_01: Uh that was so fun.
- 1:36:59SPEAKER_01: Thanks for having me.
- 1:37:00SPEAKER_01: Thanks for being on.
- 1:37:01SPEAKER_01: Have you got uh how can we find you?
- 1:37:02SPEAKER_01: Have you got any plugs?
- 1:37:04SPEAKER_02: Um, I'm on Twitter at Carrie's Not Scary and on Instagram.
- 1:37:08SPEAKER_02: Um, I am a freelance writer, so sometimes I usually tweet about things that I write.
- 1:37:13SPEAKER_02: So I write for Vulture and some other places, consequence of sound.
- 1:37:16SPEAKER_02: So randomly, you know, things take time, so and times are hard for freelancing.
- 1:37:22SPEAKER_02: So I'm not writing as much as I usually am, but I am extremely online and I tweet about Venom a lot and other films.
- 1:37:30SPEAKER_01: And you also uh I would have mentioned this at the top of the podcast, but you also are the one of the founders of the Belladonna's.
- 1:37:38SPEAKER_02: I am, and um, I also wrote a book called New Erotica for Feminists.
- 1:37:41SPEAKER_01: You did, and it's a very funny book.
- 1:37:43SPEAKER_02: And you can buy it.
- 1:37:44SPEAKER_02: Uh I mean you can still buy it.
- 1:37:46SPEAKER_02: They did not uh sell out for sure.
- 1:37:49SPEAKER_02: So you can still buy a copy of New Erotica for Feminists wherever you buy books.
- 1:37:54SPEAKER_01: And if you buy in the UK, you get a different cover, which I have.
- 1:37:56SPEAKER_02: Yes, uh, which I prefer, and it's hardcover.
- 1:38:00SPEAKER_02: It's a it's a great book.
- 1:38:01SPEAKER_02: Lovely.
- 1:38:01SPEAKER_02: It is, it's great, it's very clever.
- 1:38:04SPEAKER_01: It sits on my shelf and people question it.
- 1:38:06SPEAKER_01: People are like, what is the what is this erotic book you've got?
- 1:38:09SPEAKER_01: And then I have to show it.
- 1:38:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, it's not a book on erotica, it's uh it's a satire.
- 1:38:15SPEAKER_02: It's a cut it's a conversation starter for sure.
- 1:38:18SPEAKER_01: Definitely.
- 1:38:18SPEAKER_02: And we love that.
- 1:38:20SPEAKER_01: But it's a great book, and I highly check recommend checking out the Belladonna as well.
- 1:38:24SPEAKER_02: Very funny stuff on there.
- 1:38:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, thank you.
- 1:38:27SPEAKER_01: Thanks for being on here.
- 1:38:28SPEAKER_02: Thank you for having me.
- 1:38:31SPEAKER_01: That's the end of the podcast.
