Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to Bear Smokehouse Barbecue. It is the Yukon
- 0:02Speaker 1: Hockey Coaches Show, the first of eight on the year.
- 0:04Speaker 1: In fact, we got another coach of show tomorrow. It
- 0:06Speaker 1: is the Football Coaches Show with Jim Mora, TJ. Sheffield
- 0:10Speaker 1: and Langston Hardy Tomorrow night between six and seven here
- 0:14Speaker 1: on the Yukon Sports Network and online via the Varsity
- 0:16Speaker 1: Network App and the Varsitynetwork dot Com. Speaking of football,
- 0:20Speaker 1: a couple of weeks ago, when I get done with
- 0:22Speaker 1: my pregame from the Clutter Farms doghouse about half hour
- 0:24Speaker 1: before kick, I make my way up from gate Sea
- 0:26Speaker 1: to gate Be and I walked by and I said,
- 0:29Speaker 1: I saw a lot of familiar faces. I go, man,
- 0:31Speaker 1: these guys look like hockey players. Your hockey team went
- 0:34Speaker 1: soft football game a couple of weeks ago, which is
- 0:35Speaker 1: something they won't be able to do the rest of
- 0:37Speaker 1: the year.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Well, it came the nineteenth because we don't have a
- 0:40Speaker 2: game that Saturday.
- 0:41Speaker 1: All that's right, we'll help fill the rent.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Then No, it was a team outing that. Hudson and
- 0:47Speaker 2: John came to me and said could we get a
- 0:50Speaker 2: bus and go down to the game and bring the
- 0:51Speaker 2: team down and I thought it was awesome. I encourage them.
- 0:54Speaker 2: I think it's important to go and support all the sports.
- 0:58Speaker 2: I think that's a great piece of being a college
- 1:00Speaker 2: and you know, going out and supporting other athletes and
- 1:04Speaker 2: their teams. And they told me they had a blast.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Yeah, it is fun, which brings me to this point.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Half of the football team was new and from talking
- 1:13Speaker 1: to the players during camp, a lot of them stayed
- 1:16Speaker 1: on campus to help build the camaraderie in the chemistry.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Was it a lot and you mentioned most of your
- 1:21Speaker 1: guys stayed on campus this year. Was it the same
- 1:23Speaker 1: way with your hockey team? And you know bring in
- 1:25Speaker 1: with the new guys.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Well, we always try to bring the new guys in
- 1:28Speaker 2: in the summer. I think it's good to get them
- 1:30Speaker 2: acclimated and so when school hits, it's not foreign for
- 1:35Speaker 2: them to find out where McHugh Hall is or the
- 1:38Speaker 2: other buildings on campus. So and then you know, they
- 1:42Speaker 2: get a summer with MO and they can take a
- 1:46Speaker 2: couple of classes and possibly lighten their load or the
- 1:49Speaker 2: guys that you know, I want guys after their junior
- 1:53Speaker 2: year to be in the position to turn pro and
- 1:55Speaker 2: if they do, I still want them to get their
- 1:57Speaker 2: degree and if you're taking summer classes. Tomas Womaca when
- 2:01Speaker 2: he turned pro, we only had four classes left and
- 2:03Speaker 2: he was able to finish very easily. So that's something
- 2:06Speaker 2: important to me that the players get their degree, and
- 2:09Speaker 2: I think, you know, why not take advantage of the
- 2:12Speaker 2: summer session and get ahead.
- 2:14Speaker 3: It's interesting that even as you bring in international players,
- 2:18Speaker 3: it's looking at Philip Star. He comes in from Slovendian
- 2:21Speaker 3: but was playing in Malmos, so he doesn't have even
- 2:24Speaker 3: that North American hockey experience. So what was What is
- 2:28Speaker 3: it like when you're transitioning someone in from Europe directly
- 2:31Speaker 3: where they haven't even been in the States before.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Really, yeah, it's a little bit tougher. I think the
- 2:36Speaker 2: transition is certainly tough. I actually met with Philip today
- 2:39Speaker 2: and he was telling me that it's different hockey, it's
- 2:42Speaker 2: different school, it's different culture. So it's a tough transition
- 2:48Speaker 2: at times. But once they do, you know, get acclimated
- 2:53Speaker 2: and understand what works for them and what doesn't work.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Most of those European kids are very diligent. They're excellent
- 3:01Speaker 2: students for the most part. You know, when you're sixteen
- 3:05Speaker 2: over there, you have to make a decision. Am I
- 3:07Speaker 2: going to continue with school? Am I going to go
- 3:08Speaker 2: into a trade? Pretty much in most countries in Europe,
- 3:12Speaker 2: and the kids that continue to go into school, it's
- 3:14Speaker 2: not a joke. They take their school seriously. So the
- 3:18Speaker 2: kids that we get majority of the time over here,
- 3:21Speaker 2: the Europeans, they're very strong students.
- 3:24Speaker 1: And you do not have Philip for a little while
- 3:26Speaker 1: right to play.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I was still waiting right now. He's currently you know,
- 3:30Speaker 2: he was involved with some pro games or it was
- 3:34Speaker 2: more you know, pro team pro players playing with him.
- 3:37Speaker 2: It's a very complex situation, but he may have to
- 3:42Speaker 2: sit some games out, yes, to start the season.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Looking at other guys that are coming in since we're
- 3:49Speaker 3: talking coming over from Sweden, what is the scouting report,
- 3:51Speaker 3: even though he's from Northern Michigan. So for Viking Gustav
- 3:54Speaker 3: sind Iberg, I think that on the ice at six
- 3:57Speaker 3: six plus skates, he's going to be pretty you didn't, Yeah,
- 4:01Speaker 3: he's gonna be pretty easy to identify for fans. So
- 4:04Speaker 3: what what are they going to see out of this
- 4:06Speaker 3: massive guy?
- 4:07Speaker 2: Yeah, like I was kind of alluded to earlier, he's
- 4:10Speaker 2: a very strong skater. Yeah, he's big, he's long, He's
- 4:14Speaker 2: gonna be an excellent penalty killer. I think offensively he's
- 4:19Speaker 2: gonna be able to chip in. He scored a great
- 4:21Speaker 2: goal today in practice, so you know, we're excited to
- 4:25Speaker 2: have him. I think he's a piece that we've been
- 4:26Speaker 2: missing a little bit, so that that big defenseman that
- 4:31Speaker 2: can defend and also chip in offensively.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Andrew Lucas was was probably the primary quarterback on the
- 4:38Speaker 1: blue line last season. Who steps up and takes that
- 4:40Speaker 1: spot or a few guys.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I think Nick Carabin has the potential to do that.
- 4:45Speaker 2: I think kai Jan Varia is another one who has
- 4:48Speaker 2: excellent power play skills. So John Spetz has excellent power
- 4:53Speaker 2: play skills. So we'll have a few guys I think
- 4:56Speaker 2: that can step into that role.
- 4:57Speaker 1: All right, We're gonna allow Mike to get a little
- 4:59Speaker 1: bit dinner now of dinner, and then we'll bring him
- 5:00Speaker 1: back and get a few extra minutes with him towards
- 5:03Speaker 1: the end, because we want to talk about Johnny Gudreau unfortunately,
- 5:05Speaker 1: but I know he was very near and dear to you,
- 5:08Speaker 1: and we'll talk to Mike about that later. But when
- 5:10Speaker 1: we come back, it's Jake Richard and Thomasineo Our player
- 5:13Speaker 1: interviews as we continue from Bear Smokehouse Barbecue, the Yukon
- 5:16Speaker 1: Hockey Coaches Show on Learfield
