- 0:12Speaker 1: in this corner standing it five foot nine Wayne Town
- 0:18Speaker 1: with six wins.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Three losses, two arrests, four late payments on student loans.
- 0:23Speaker 3: And two total paint ruptcies.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Hits the Classy. I'll go thank you. Welcome back to
- 0:33Speaker 2: the episode of Mixed Company podcast. Of course, miamus Jamison
- 0:37Speaker 2: and I'm joining, Oh what is by classy? Classy? What's
- 0:40Speaker 2: going on? Man?
- 0:41Speaker 3: Oh man? I am very stoked this week because the
- 0:43Speaker 3: boxing world has been a bit quiet and easing into
- 0:45Speaker 3: the new year, as expected, but now it's ramping up
- 0:48Speaker 3: and we got a bunch of several We got several
- 0:50Speaker 3: important fights happening soon that we're going to talk about today. So, uh,
- 0:53Speaker 3: do you want to get into the news.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Well, let's get right into it. You never really eased
- 0:56Speaker 2: into boxing because boxing is like a twenty four seven,
- 0:59Speaker 2: three sixty five sports. Always something going on, right, whether
- 1:01Speaker 2: it's boxer's doing something being made, you know, talk going
- 1:06Speaker 2: on is always something that the sport never dies. It's
- 1:09Speaker 2: always there's no off season for boxing.
- 1:11Speaker 3: That is true. That is true. Well, I walked to
- 1:13Speaker 3: the news stand this morning. I picked up some pornomags
- 1:15Speaker 3: and I also got a copy of the Boxing Gazette.
- 1:17Speaker 3: So let's look at some headlines here.
- 1:19Speaker 2: They still sew porno magazine stores.
- 1:23Speaker 3: I get my hands on the one way or another.
- 1:25Speaker 3: So the but all right, okay, physical media will never die.
- 1:30Speaker 3: Speaking of things that will less forever for and for
- 1:33Speaker 3: the for the young listeners, a magazine is like an
- 1:35Speaker 3: iPad made out of paper back in the day that
- 1:37Speaker 3: we had. So first up last Friday, in the middle
- 1:42Speaker 3: of the night, us time. You know. Japanese boxer and
- 1:44Speaker 3: knockout artists. Now, yeah, in a way defeated Yeh June
- 1:47Speaker 3: Kim and run four of their fight, which is honestly
- 1:50Speaker 3: the least surprising news in the world. But there's something
- 1:52Speaker 3: I want to talk about, the actual knockout. But first, Jameson,
- 1:54Speaker 3: did you get a chance to see a replay of
- 1:56Speaker 3: the fight?
- 1:56Speaker 2: Die replay of the fight? It's a as expected, like
- 2:00Speaker 2: we're not surprised by the results, like we've kind of
- 2:03Speaker 2: expected my biggest couple things a little bit controversial. But
- 2:07Speaker 2: also it's time to see him in America. Now, it's
- 2:10Speaker 2: time to see him when everybody's up and watching live
- 2:13Speaker 2: not hear say it's almost like a it's almost like
- 2:15Speaker 2: a myth in a sense, right, Like you've heard about him,
- 2:17Speaker 2: you've heard the name, you see him on list, but
- 2:19Speaker 2: no one's really seen him live out here. We've heard him,
- 2:23Speaker 2: we've heard all the things on pound pound list. Some
- 2:26Speaker 2: people have him a number one pound pound, which is
- 2:28Speaker 2: a little crazy to me, but neither here nor there. However,
- 2:31Speaker 2: we got to see him with the lights of bright
- 2:33Speaker 2: in Vegas, New York, LA, whatever, where there's twenty thousand
- 2:37Speaker 2: people and you're in an unfamiliar territory and Liscott si
- 2:40Speaker 2: how he performs in because that's all that matters.
- 2:43Speaker 3: He did say that his plan is to fight in
- 2:44Speaker 3: Vegas this year, so he wants to fight twice this
- 2:47Speaker 3: year Vegas and then maybe Saudi Arabia at the end
- 2:49Speaker 3: of the year, so maybe in the summer something like that.
- 2:52Speaker 3: And something I forgot to mention we previous the fight
- 2:55Speaker 3: last episode, my man, you know, way he fights twice
- 2:57Speaker 3: a year. Like you want to talk about guys not
- 2:59Speaker 3: being active, which we brought up before. He fights twice
- 3:02Speaker 3: a year consistently. This fight he just had was delayed
- 3:06Speaker 3: from December, but he's still going to do his two fights,
- 3:09Speaker 3: so you may get three total in twenty twenty five,
- 3:11Speaker 3: which is wild. So you know, other folks take note.
- 3:13Speaker 3: The thing I wanted to mention about the actual knockout
- 3:15Speaker 3: you know, Kim, he started off okay, you know, got
- 3:18Speaker 3: some shots in uh turn the fourth dry and he
- 3:21Speaker 3: was up against the ropes and he did the like
- 3:23Speaker 3: come and get it, like show me what you got
- 3:25Speaker 3: thing when he put his hands up. Y'all, don't do that.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Don't do that shit unless you really really know you
- 3:31Speaker 3: can block, dodge and take the shots from your opponent.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Because guess what happened. You know, he showed him what
- 3:36Speaker 3: he had and you know, got him with some body shots,
- 3:38Speaker 3: got him in the chin, and my man was out.
- 3:40Speaker 3: So you don't want to be the dude that that
- 3:43Speaker 3: goes wrong for, is all I say.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Please.
- 3:47Speaker 3: So yeah, you know, hopefully he does fight in Vegas
- 3:50Speaker 3: and a lot of more folks get to see him
- 3:51Speaker 3: later this year. I'm excited.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Uh.
- 3:54Speaker 3: The guy's name is nickname is the Monster. And weirdly
- 3:57Speaker 3: enough we're going from one monster to another because this
- 4:00Speaker 3: next fighter, he's also a knockout artist. His nickname is
- 4:04Speaker 3: also well, it's all monstro of course. I'm talking about
- 4:07Speaker 3: local hero David Benavidez from Phoenix. The Saturday, February first,
- 4:11Speaker 3: he is going up against David Morrele Junior from Cuba.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Benevidez used to fight at super middleweight at one sixty
- 4:19Speaker 3: eight pounds. He was the mandatory challenger for Canelo Alvarez,
- 4:22Speaker 3: but Cannelo refused to fight him. Was Canelo being coward?
- 4:26Speaker 2: Was he afraid?
- 4:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll say was he a coward? Was he afraid?
- 4:29Speaker 3: As possible? So Benavidez decided to move up one weight
- 4:33Speaker 3: class to light heavyweight max have won seventy five pounds,
- 4:36Speaker 3: trying to make a name for himself, and if he
- 4:38Speaker 3: wins this match, he'll be a natural challenger for the
- 4:40Speaker 3: winner of the Dmitri Beebl and archer peterbev rematched in February. So, Jameson,
- 4:45Speaker 3: how do you feel about this idea that Canelo ducked
- 4:47Speaker 3: Benavidez because he was afraid? And I gonna need a
- 4:49Speaker 3: stiff drink for this one, because you know, Canelos my guy.
- 4:52Speaker 2: I know, I know. But here's the thing. All of
- 4:53Speaker 2: our fighters have done weird things in their careers. Like,
- 4:55Speaker 2: that's how it goes, like no, no one's fighter is
- 4:59Speaker 2: one hundred percent innocent and pure when it comes to
- 5:02Speaker 2: the business of boxing. Just how it goes. If you're
- 5:04Speaker 2: a Floyd fan, if you're a Manny fan, if you're
- 5:07Speaker 2: a Canelo fan, They've all picked and choose and done
- 5:10Speaker 2: things that people don't agree with for the betterment of
- 5:13Speaker 2: themselves in their pocketbook. So this is just par for
- 5:15Speaker 2: the course. Canelos smart Canal is also an entity in
- 5:19Speaker 2: a businessman. There are certain weekends in Vegas where if
- 5:22Speaker 2: he's fighting, everyone does well. Everyone right. The Tourism board
- 5:26Speaker 2: of Clark County welcomes him to come a couple times
- 5:30Speaker 2: a year. So it's bigger than just bragging rights. It's
- 5:33Speaker 2: bigger than just win loss records. You gotta understand less
- 5:36Speaker 2: it's worth it money wise, You're not gonna take unnecessary
- 5:41Speaker 2: risk in your eyes, That's just how it goes.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean you want to say Canelo duck Benavidez
- 5:47Speaker 3: because he was afraid, that's fine. I'm not even gonna
- 5:48Speaker 3: argue it. I personally just hate our fans can always
- 5:51Speaker 3: find a reason to complain about a fighter. Nobody has
- 5:54Speaker 3: a good enough resume. Nobody fights the right people. Everyone
- 5:57Speaker 3: is overrated. Like if Instagram and Facebook comings made a
- 6:00Speaker 3: legal light, wouldn't be said.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Honestly, here's the thing. The only thing I will say,
- 6:05Speaker 2: Oscar didn't duck anybody. Why. Oscar has a lot of
- 6:08Speaker 2: flaws and we INVESI post fighting career and all that
- 6:11Speaker 2: stuff and outside of the ring, But the one thing
- 6:13Speaker 2: I will give him credit for is he didn't duck anybody.
- 6:16Speaker 2: He was the face of the sport for a long time.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Inf'sially for the notoriety he was able to provide, and
- 6:23Speaker 2: he never really ducked it. He focked everyone, And I
- 6:26Speaker 2: give him a lot of because ever since then, no
- 6:28Speaker 2: one's done that, or they did it, did it on
- 6:30Speaker 2: their time, right, They wait until people declined, They waited
- 6:33Speaker 2: till people were in different situations, et cetera, et cetera.
- 6:36Speaker 2: So I think that's what we're accustomed to, is, Hey,
- 6:38Speaker 2: whoever the face of the sport is, you're taking all challenges.
- 6:41Speaker 2: So when that didn't happen with the generations after, it
- 6:44Speaker 2: was kind of like, ah, but the business is so
- 6:46Speaker 2: large now, the amounts are so huge that I understand,
- 6:50Speaker 2: I get it. Right.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Well, and another thing on specifically Canelo. You know the
- 6:55Speaker 3: WBC were Boxing Council supposedly threatened to strip his belt
- 6:59Speaker 3: if he didn't take the Benavitas fight, but then they
- 7:01Speaker 3: did it. So if it's not going to be in force,
- 7:03Speaker 3: nobody has to fight anybody, like fact, why make a
- 7:05Speaker 3: mentor I'm supposed to like not do drugs in the
- 7:08Speaker 3: bathroom of a dive bar in two some. But if
- 7:10Speaker 3: the bartender is a friend of mine and isn't going
- 7:11Speaker 3: to hold me to that rule, then I don't think
- 7:13Speaker 3: I really did anything wrong.
- 7:15Speaker 2: You're honorlyerminating our cell on live podcast.
- 7:17Speaker 3: No, no comedy, said satire, comedy, satire, just yeah, yeah,
- 7:21Speaker 3: checking allegedly if I were to do that hypothetically speaking, okay,
- 7:27Speaker 3: make you sure, yeah, yeah, of course, of course I
- 7:29Speaker 3: know the game. But yeah, Benavite is a great fighter.
- 7:32Speaker 3: I hope he has a lot of success in the
- 7:33Speaker 3: light heavyweight class. I hope he fights and beats the
- 7:35Speaker 3: shit out of either better Be or be Ball in
- 7:37Speaker 3: the near future. So perps to you man, helps to
- 7:39Speaker 3: see you, helps to see you get bigger and bigger. Uh. Sunday,
- 7:43Speaker 3: February twod Clarissa Shield returns to the ring to fight
- 7:47Speaker 3: in her hometown of Flint against Daniel Perkins, who only
- 7:50Speaker 3: has a record of five and zero but is a
- 7:51Speaker 3: former basketball player over six feet tall, probably the most
- 7:55Speaker 3: physically imposing opponent Shield that has ever got up again.
- 7:58Speaker 3: So we've talked about Clarissa plenty on the show because
- 8:01Speaker 3: the bio picked the fire inside, which y'all should see.
- 8:05Speaker 3: Uh yeah, for this fight. You know, I just want
- 8:06Speaker 3: to reiterate what I've said before that let's not dismiss
- 8:09Speaker 3: opponents as like bums, tomato cans, uber drivers, whatever, just
- 8:13Speaker 3: think because they don't have a long resume, anything can
- 8:15Speaker 3: happen to boxing. An upset is always on the table,
- 8:18Speaker 3: and a great fighter can always have an off.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Night, right, always always not focused, taking someone lightly, et cetera,
- 8:23Speaker 2: et cetera. Next you know you're in a fight, a
- 8:25Speaker 2: close fight in round eight. You just never know how
- 8:28Speaker 2: these things work out. So never taken too lightly, Shields
- 8:31Speaker 2: should win, but you know, you just never know. You
- 8:34Speaker 2: never know.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Yeah, So you know I'm rooting for and I'm rooting
- 8:39Speaker 3: for women's boxing, so you know, please watch support and
- 8:41Speaker 3: let's get more ladies out there on the ring.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Let's get us scrapping absolutely.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Speaking of scraps, I wanted to mention online one this
- 8:48Speaker 3: is more for fun between Devin Haney and Serves Sloane.
- 8:51Speaker 3: I'll put on my Jay Leno voice, cheer about this,
- 8:53Speaker 3: care about this.
- 8:55Speaker 2: I've seen the hangings on social media for the last month.
- 8:58Speaker 2: I've seen the dad, I've seen the sun, I've seen
- 9:02Speaker 2: different things. It's getting out of hand. Why get back
- 9:07Speaker 2: in the ring?
- 9:08Speaker 3: Sure this one, I'm gonna I'm gonna go ahead and
- 9:10Speaker 3: give get on Haney side a little bit because what
- 9:12Speaker 3: happened is that Stolene had a TikTok video from last year.
- 9:15Speaker 3: The resurfaced on you know, some some boxing account or whatever.
- 9:20Speaker 3: He was showing off some gloves that he used to
- 9:22Speaker 3: wear when he was filming Rocky and he said, I
- 9:24Speaker 3: got the code here.
- 9:25Speaker 4: Uh, they don't even allow these today because they're so dangerous.
- 9:28Speaker 4: That's what they that's what they use when I did
- 9:30Speaker 4: the film. They're billy six ounces. They're literally lethal. Is
- 9:34Speaker 4: the time when people were tougher, sorry they were, Life
- 9:36Speaker 4: is getting easier and easier and easier, man.
- 9:39Speaker 3: So David Hayney on Twitter said, dude, don't know a
- 9:42Speaker 3: left frock from a fish hook, which is kind of funny.
- 9:44Speaker 3: He got the nervous speak on times being easier in boxing,
- 9:47Speaker 3: like he wasn't just an actor buddy them Rocky movies
- 9:49Speaker 3: wasn't real, which.
- 9:53Speaker 2: I know.
- 9:54Speaker 3: There's nothing I hate more than like the grampies talking
- 9:57Speaker 3: about how people used to be tougher and kids these
- 9:59Speaker 3: days there's so soft. But man, shut up, like you're
- 10:03Speaker 3: you're basically just giving yourself credit for your generation, and
- 10:06Speaker 3: you know two layers you want to talk about boxing
- 10:09Speaker 3: maybe being tougher, being fifteen rounds, people using different good
- 10:13Speaker 3: things change because people fucking died. You know, boxing has been,
- 10:17Speaker 3: has always been a dayier sport. It always will be.
- 10:19Speaker 3: But that doesn't mean we think the sport is better
- 10:21Speaker 3: when there's a higher number of dead fighters. Do we like?
- 10:25Speaker 2: No, it's like anything else. Still the air of the sport.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Everyone from there are thinks it was the toughest, it
- 10:29Speaker 2: was the hardest, et cetera, et cetera. So you talk
- 10:32Speaker 2: to a football fan, they're going to say football in
- 10:33Speaker 2: the seventies and eighties was tougher than it is now,
- 10:36Speaker 2: saying thing with basketball and baseball. That's just how it goes.
- 10:38Speaker 2: But also technology evolves. Information to evolved, So the information
- 10:43Speaker 2: technology we have now is way better than it was
- 10:45Speaker 2: thirty forty fifty years ago. So we're able to put
- 10:48Speaker 2: that in place and make things easier for our athletes
- 10:51Speaker 2: to box. And that's kind of where we're at with things.
- 10:54Speaker 2: So unfortunately, some people were just born at the wrong time.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Sure, I mean, but at the same time, yeah, you
- 11:00Speaker 3: learn and adapt. That's kind of what we're all supposed
- 11:02Speaker 3: to do, is people as a society, So just not
- 11:05Speaker 3: just stuck living in the past, I think. And Plus,
- 11:08Speaker 3: if Stallone is talking about how the world and society
- 11:11Speaker 3: at large things are just easier, all I'll say is
- 11:13Speaker 3: kids in school these days do active shooter drills. And
- 11:16Speaker 3: the reason Stillone probably considers themselves so tough is because
- 11:18Speaker 3: he had to grow up watching black people move into
- 11:20Speaker 3: his neighborhoods. Yes, I said it.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it's the generation that he comes from
- 11:26Speaker 2: is different. You know, they view things a lot different
- 11:28Speaker 2: than we do. So I don't agree with his stance,
- 11:32Speaker 2: but I'm not totally surprised either.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Sure, sure, I mean, yes, you're never surprised when a
- 11:37Speaker 3: granpy says we were twofer back then.
- 11:39Speaker 2: That's correct.
- 11:41Speaker 3: So yeah, that's kind of the just kind of trying
- 11:43Speaker 3: to pick some headlines off of the Boxing Gazette that
- 11:45Speaker 3: I think you're interesting to talk about. Let's move on
- 11:48Speaker 3: to a topic that I've been reading about that I
- 11:51Speaker 3: don't know how significant it is, Jamison, definitely want to
- 11:54Speaker 3: get your take on what this means for the boxing world.
- 11:57Speaker 3: Boxing broadcasts, you know. So, there's several boxing promotional companies
- 12:01Speaker 3: out there today. The one that's probably best known as
- 12:04Speaker 3: Top Rank. They've been around since the seventies. They promoted
- 12:06Speaker 3: fighters that practically everyone has heard of, even if you
- 12:08Speaker 3: don't watch boxing, Muhammad Ali, George Furman, and Pacquiel Mayweather,
- 12:12Speaker 3: so many others.
- 12:14Speaker 2: So they got a.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Contract it with their fights to air their fights on ESPN.
- 12:17Speaker 3: They've been with them since the eighties, broke things off
- 12:19Speaker 3: of the nineties, got back together in twenty seventeen, blah
- 12:22Speaker 3: blah blah. So the contract is going to be up
- 12:27Speaker 3: this year, and there is a hints the rumors word
- 12:31Speaker 3: on the street that Top Rank has its eye, its
- 12:33Speaker 3: wandering eye on a sexy young British streamer named the Zone,
- 12:37Speaker 3: who we've talked about before. So yeah, I mean the
- 12:40Speaker 3: possibility of Top Rank no longer showing its fights on
- 12:43Speaker 3: ESPN and going to a streamer only because the Zone
- 12:47Speaker 3: is you know, it's an app and it's also subscription only.
- 12:50Speaker 3: I don't know. I have mixed feelings about this. What
- 12:52Speaker 3: are your thoughts on it? I know there have been
- 12:53Speaker 3: different kinds of you know, changes in contracts, broadcast, et cetera.
- 12:57Speaker 3: Give me, give me your thoughts on this.
- 13:00Speaker 2: The fan needs to know that it's very expensive to
- 13:03Speaker 2: throw a boxing mat or provide or you know, host
- 13:08Speaker 2: a boxing event. It's very expensive. It's even more expensive
- 13:12Speaker 2: to showcase it and do it repeatedly over a year.
- 13:15Speaker 2: So that being said, I can see why ESPN is
- 13:18Speaker 2: getting out of the business if certain fights aren't being made,
- 13:21Speaker 2: if they're not making the return they need to make,
- 13:23Speaker 2: then they're going to get out. However, Amazon, Dozone, Apple TV,
- 13:30Speaker 2: all those need content. So if you're saying that the
- 13:34Speaker 2: Zone is getting boxing, that's perfectly fine. I get that.
- 13:38Speaker 2: If other streamers want to come in as well, OXY
- 13:41Speaker 2: that as well. Because what happens is they all those
- 13:44Speaker 2: platforms need live content. Even though the events are expensive
- 13:48Speaker 2: to host, they need live content. So it makes perfect sense.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Why the streaming services say, hey, you know what, once
- 13:55Speaker 2: it deals over, will take care of you because it's
- 13:58Speaker 2: cheaper for us to air the fights on our platform,
- 14:01Speaker 2: that is for ESPN, and do it. So it all
- 14:03Speaker 2: makes sense. It totally makes sense. And it's also it's
- 14:07Speaker 2: the norm because every other sport is doing the same thing.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Everything's being streamed now, everything has streaming options. A lot
- 14:13Speaker 2: of networks along other ways are not investing as much
- 14:16Speaker 2: money or whatever it may be. So this is a
- 14:19Speaker 2: sign of the times. It's a sign of the times.
- 14:21Speaker 2: I feel sorry for older people who aren't technological savly
- 14:24Speaker 2: because they're used to just turning on channel and watching
- 14:27Speaker 2: an event. Now they got to download an app or
- 14:29Speaker 2: wait for a stream to pop up, and that's not
- 14:31Speaker 2: necessarily their strengths.
- 14:33Speaker 3: Well, everything you're saying is pair. Yes, it is the
- 14:36Speaker 3: sign of the times. However, you did make a very
- 14:38Speaker 3: good point, or a very important point. I have to
- 14:40Speaker 3: mention you said everything has streaming options. ESPN has a
- 14:44Speaker 3: streaming option in ESPN plus this is going to go
- 14:47Speaker 3: all streaming. And I'm not even worried so much about
- 14:50Speaker 3: the grand piece. Honestly, my thoughts on it were the people.
- 14:54Speaker 3: We've talked about how more people should be getting into boxing.
- 14:57Speaker 3: We should be doing everything we can to expand the sport. Right,
- 15:00Speaker 3: core fans will follow it anywhere you put it on,
- 15:01Speaker 3: any app, any streaming service, whatever it is, will follow.
- 15:04Speaker 3: But for the people that don't, letsten let's there's three
- 15:07Speaker 3: categories of people that don't follow boxing. People who cut
- 15:11Speaker 3: Number one as people cut the cord, don't have cable
- 15:13Speaker 3: and also don't watch sports at all, so they pay
- 15:15Speaker 3: for Netflix HBO. They don't care about sports. They're practically unreachable,
- 15:19Speaker 3: you know, which is fine. Number two is people who
- 15:21Speaker 3: don't care about sports but still have basic cable and
- 15:24Speaker 3: then maybe they pay for like HBO. Three is people
- 15:27Speaker 3: who love sports but have never seen a boxing match.
- 15:29Speaker 3: I know people like that who are obsessed with the NFL,
- 15:31Speaker 3: NBA or baseball if they're a fan of napping, but
- 15:34Speaker 3: they've never seen a match. So we can write off
- 15:37Speaker 3: number one as potential boxing fans. But what if we
- 15:40Speaker 3: could convince people from group two or three to watch
- 15:42Speaker 3: a match for whatever reason? Maybe we talk about it,
- 15:44Speaker 3: you know on social media.
- 15:46Speaker 2: You know there's this cool fight.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Maybe a dude try to impress a babe who's into
- 15:49Speaker 3: combat sports. If someone has, you know, a basic cable,
- 15:52Speaker 3: they just turn on ESPN on Friday or Saturday, right
- 15:56Speaker 3: or and then the people who like sports and don't
- 15:58Speaker 3: watch boxing, they probably have ESPN Plus anyway.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Right absolutely, But also think it like this. Everything is
- 16:06Speaker 2: going towards streaming. That's just how it is. But the
- 16:09Speaker 2: best way of item grows or it gets legs it
- 16:13Speaker 2: is when it's on the regular TV, like we grew
- 16:15Speaker 2: up with boxing being on CBS and ABC. When you know,
- 16:20Speaker 2: that's how and eventually ESPN and then pay per view.
- 16:23Speaker 2: These young kids know nothing about that. The younger generation
- 16:26Speaker 2: has no idea about that. Their biggest thing was when
- 16:31Speaker 2: when they took over for PBC, they start putting things
- 16:35Speaker 2: on Fox and CBO. They did that for a while.
- 16:39Speaker 2: It wasn't necessarily giving them money they thought it was,
- 16:41Speaker 2: and they were paying the fighters way too much, so
- 16:43Speaker 2: they didn't quite last. But that would be the ideal situation.
- 16:47Speaker 2: Going to streaming is tough because you gotta really if
- 16:50Speaker 2: you really want to watch something, you'll find it. So
- 16:52Speaker 2: streaming is cool, but you really x out a lot
- 16:55Speaker 2: of people that are casual people because they're not going
- 16:57Speaker 2: to go to an extra mile to view something you told.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Like I said a couple of the people that I
- 17:02Speaker 3: mentioned in those last two categories, you have to download
- 17:04Speaker 3: a whole less other app to watch a fight. They're done,
- 17:06Speaker 3: they're done listening. And Plus, another thing we've said before
- 17:11Speaker 3: is not a lot of fights really permeate the zeitgeist,
- 17:15Speaker 3: the public consciousness. You know, it's gonna be Paul Logan
- 17:18Speaker 3: and his clown brother. It's going to be you know,
- 17:20Speaker 3: Deontay Wilder Fury three, that was everywhere. But if someone
- 17:24Speaker 3: he's like, wow, there's so many people talking about Fury
- 17:27Speaker 3: Wildther three, I should check it out. Oh eighty dollars
- 17:29Speaker 3: pay per view. Fought that right, you know which? Fine,
- 17:31Speaker 3: you know it's only very few people are going to
- 17:33Speaker 3: do something like that. But if they're curious about the
- 17:36Speaker 3: sport and yeah, you just turn to flip a channel,
- 17:38Speaker 3: I think it's gonna it might make the world of
- 17:42Speaker 3: boxing less accessible. And I don't know, I don't know
- 17:46Speaker 3: if you think maybe that it's not gonna matter that
- 17:49Speaker 3: much for the fandom that it has for it to grow.
- 17:52Speaker 3: It hasn't been growing that much anyway, so what does
- 17:54Speaker 3: it matter. I don't know, I mean, is the sport
- 17:57Speaker 3: going to be in trouble if it becomes harder and
- 17:59Speaker 3: hard en iof I in the future.
- 18:01Speaker 2: So here's the situation a sports that we're gonna be
- 18:05Speaker 2: in trouble. We've been talking about boxing is dead for
- 18:07Speaker 2: thirty years now, so we're not true. We're not going
- 18:10Speaker 2: to go there through it will be fine. The issue
- 18:12Speaker 2: is this, we need more transcendent boxers, not just guys
- 18:16Speaker 2: that go viral because they're dumb. We need guys to
- 18:19Speaker 2: be good and be viral and be good like if
- 18:22Speaker 2: Tank Davis was had a better personality and could be marketable,
- 18:28Speaker 2: that would be better. But those things aren't available at
- 18:30Speaker 2: this time. So here we are. If Devin Haney can
- 18:33Speaker 2: actually fight with the way he looks, we would be
- 18:36Speaker 2: in a better shape. But that's not the case. We
- 18:39Speaker 2: need more guys that the public knows off of name
- 18:42Speaker 2: and what they do, not naming what they've done off
- 18:45Speaker 2: the ring or outside of the ring, or what their
- 18:47Speaker 2: parent has done. We need more people to be like, oh,
- 18:50Speaker 2: that's Devin Haney, he's undefeated, blah blah blah, he's really
- 18:52Speaker 2: good at boxing, he's twenty whatever, he looks good, etc.
- 18:56Speaker 2: We need that. And it's funny because we watched a
- 18:58Speaker 2: movie that we're gonna coverlater on where one of the
- 19:01Speaker 2: boxers in that movie had that look that transcended to
- 19:05Speaker 2: all parts, you know. So it's funny how boxing was
- 19:10Speaker 2: thirty forty years ago when you had an athlete that
- 19:12Speaker 2: people knew. Now the average person doesn't know the athletes.
- 19:16Speaker 2: And a big part of it is how the how
- 19:18Speaker 2: the sport is covered and how it's marketed well.
- 19:22Speaker 3: And I think to the issues that everybody A lot
- 19:26Speaker 3: of fans have been said saying that, you know, well,
- 19:28Speaker 3: if everything is on the don because the Zone owns
- 19:29Speaker 3: a bunch of other promoters, like they own Matchhrow Boxing,
- 19:33Speaker 3: they have Goldenboy Promotions. They think if everybody's going to
- 19:37Speaker 3: be on the Zone, it's going to be easier to
- 19:39Speaker 3: make big fights and everybody's gonna I I think people
- 19:42Speaker 3: think that this is something that it's not. Sean Porter
- 19:45Speaker 3: actually made a very good point when he was talking
- 19:47Speaker 3: about this. They said, oh, everybody's under the same umbrella.
- 19:50Speaker 3: He said, there's a difference between being under the same
- 19:53Speaker 3: umbrella and the same platform versus the same platform, And
- 19:57Speaker 3: this is what this is. Being under the same umbrella
- 19:59Speaker 3: means Top Rank buys all these other promoters and they
- 20:02Speaker 3: own it. Like speaking of ESPN, they're own by Disney,
- 20:05Speaker 3: so is Fox, so is ABC. They're under the same umbrella.
- 20:08Speaker 3: If Top Brank goes to the Zone, that just means
- 20:10Speaker 3: they'll be on the same platform with other promoters. Yeah,
- 20:13Speaker 3: they can work together, but that doesn't mean that they will.
- 20:16Speaker 3: That they'll collaborate. Might be a little easier because they
- 20:18Speaker 3: don't have to negotiate where these fights are streaming. But
- 20:21Speaker 3: I don't see that this is going to be the
- 20:23Speaker 3: golden era of like all the best fighters are gonna
- 20:25Speaker 3: fight everybody because they're all on the zone.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Honestly, my biggest thing is how is it marketing? Right?
- 20:31Speaker 2: Like the fights being wherever is fine because they're marketing well,
- 20:33Speaker 2: people will go anywhere to watch. How are they marketing?
- 20:36Speaker 2: How are they cross marketed? And are they going to
- 20:38Speaker 2: be on podcasts? Am I gonna get as when I'm
- 20:40Speaker 2: listening something totally different and then it pops up on
- 20:43Speaker 2: a podcast, as it's gonna be on radio? Is it
- 20:45Speaker 2: gonna be on sporting events? On TV? It's gonna be
- 20:47Speaker 2: on side? Those are my questions. How are they gonna
- 20:49Speaker 2: be marketed because the one thing ESPN, Fox, et cetera
- 20:54Speaker 2: do well is they market the fights when you're watching
- 20:57Speaker 2: something else. So there's a basketball game on, you get
- 20:59Speaker 2: the you know, the pre pre marketing situation saying hey
- 21:03Speaker 2: check out this Saturday, such and such takes on such
- 21:05Speaker 2: and such for the WBC. Those are things that are
- 21:08Speaker 2: needed when it comes to boxing. You got to do
- 21:10Speaker 2: that because casual fans will tune in if they know,
- 21:12Speaker 2: but if they don't know, they're not going to tune in.
- 21:14Speaker 2: So those are things that I look forward to, Like,
- 21:17Speaker 2: how's it going to be marketing? Or you're going to
- 21:19Speaker 2: change the ways of marketing if be'cially, if you do stream,
- 21:22Speaker 2: you gotta do a lot more directly to consumer're not necessarily
- 21:24Speaker 2: a broad thing. So you may have things that go
- 21:26Speaker 2: to someone's phone. You may have something where a banner
- 21:29Speaker 2: comes down someone's phone every other day talking about, hey,
- 21:31Speaker 2: don't forget this fine on this night. You know. So
- 21:33Speaker 2: those are things I'm more worried about, is how's it
- 21:36Speaker 2: going to be marketed to the part to the people,
- 21:39Speaker 2: not necessarily where they're gonna be located at.
- 21:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't see. I'm not optimistic that they're going
- 21:45Speaker 3: to do a lot of great marketing for you know,
- 21:47Speaker 3: so probably should have started this. But The Zone is
- 21:51Speaker 3: a British app. They do broadcast number two hundred countries.
- 21:55Speaker 3: Let's see, they got about two million subscribe twenty million subscribers,
- 21:58Speaker 3: my bad. They're worth about three million British queenie books.
- 22:02Speaker 3: And it's a popular app, but I don't know of
- 22:06Speaker 3: a lot of people like I think it's biggest claim
- 22:07Speaker 3: to fame is that it shows the NFL in in England,
- 22:10Speaker 3: you know, and then they promote Canelo, you know, and
- 22:14Speaker 3: stuff like that. But I'll give a very very personal,
- 22:19Speaker 3: just anecdotal situation. So I was in London twenty twenty
- 22:23Speaker 3: two and that weekend where it was Dmitri Povile versus
- 22:27Speaker 3: Zordla Ramirez and I go to a footy pub my
- 22:30Speaker 3: first night and I'm talking to the bartenders and I said, hey,
- 22:32Speaker 3: you know this is closest sports pub to my to
- 22:34Speaker 3: where I'm staying. Or do you all play boxing? Here's yeah,
- 22:37Speaker 3: yeah absolutely. It's like, oh is this fight on Saturday?
- 22:40Speaker 3: If I come back? You know, do you guys know
- 22:41Speaker 3: if you're playing it? Bartender? Really cool guy, says, Oh,
- 22:44Speaker 3: don't worry about it, might you know, you just tell
- 22:45Speaker 3: the bartender that it's on. We'll put it on one
- 22:47Speaker 3: of the queens for you, all right, come back. The
- 22:49Speaker 3: guy was like, oh, is it on Sky Sports? I'm like, no,
- 22:52Speaker 3: it's on the Zone. And he's like, what is that.
- 22:55Speaker 3: I'm like, that's it's your guys, Like these are your guys,
- 22:57Speaker 3: Like what are you talking about? What is that? So
- 22:59Speaker 3: I told him, I said, it's it's this fighter, this Fighter.
- 23:02Speaker 3: It's in Saudi Arabia. It's about now. And he's like, na, man,
- 23:04Speaker 3: if it's not on sky Sports, I don't, we don't,
- 23:06Speaker 3: we can't put it on. So I was actually surprised,
- 23:09Speaker 3: you know, being an ignorant American abroad, I'm like, you
- 23:12Speaker 3: all know fucking this the Zone app, it's got the
- 23:14Speaker 3: dumb name, it's got all your it's all your guys,
- 23:16Speaker 3: So like, why why didn't a sports club in London
- 23:21Speaker 3: know about it? So very anecdotal, like I said, but
- 23:24Speaker 3: that's even worse. If I'm here at a you know,
- 23:26Speaker 3: at a Buffalo Wild Wings talking to somebody about a
- 23:28Speaker 3: match on Saturday on the Zone.
- 23:30Speaker 2: You know what I mean? Right right? Right? I don't know.
- 23:33Speaker 3: It's kind I kind of worry about that promotion and
- 23:36Speaker 3: how well people know it and if they're already streaming
- 23:39Speaker 3: in two hundred countries and they have because they don't
- 23:41Speaker 3: just have combat sports, they have a lot of different
- 23:43Speaker 3: kinds of sports. So how much are they really really
- 23:46Speaker 3: gonna focus on boxing going forward? Like I said, I'm
- 23:49Speaker 3: not very optimistic.
- 23:50Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 23:50Speaker 3: I don't know. If you feel maybe there is a
- 23:52Speaker 3: chance there's hope.
- 23:54Speaker 2: You tell me, I gotta see who's in charge of
- 23:56Speaker 2: the operation. That would tell me a lot and what
- 23:58Speaker 2: their experience is, right, because if they have boxing experience,
- 24:02Speaker 2: i'd be cool. But if you're telling me somebody from
- 24:03Speaker 2: tennis or golf or whatever is running the show, then
- 24:07Speaker 2: it's gonna be rough, and then the marketing is gonna
- 24:09Speaker 2: be weird, like and I would wouldn't have that much hope.
- 24:11Speaker 2: But we'll see, We'll definitely see. Yeah.
- 24:15Speaker 3: I mean, I think another sort of like mark against
- 24:19Speaker 3: them is that I don't think you and I knew
- 24:21Speaker 3: how to pronounce the name of the app for a
- 24:22Speaker 3: long time, even though we watch boxing on you know,
- 24:26Speaker 3: boxing matches they broadcast.
- 24:27Speaker 2: So absolutely absolutely yeah.
- 24:30Speaker 3: But we'll see I mean figures crossed. I uh, I
- 24:33Speaker 3: of course will watch boxing wherever it goes. But I'm
- 24:37Speaker 3: you know, the part of doing the show too is
- 24:38Speaker 3: kind of spread the word, trying to get some a
- 24:40Speaker 3: couple of folks to check out a match whenever they can.
- 24:43Speaker 3: And I think this is gonna make my personal job harder.
- 24:46Speaker 3: So I don't know, but maybe we'll get some amazing
- 24:48Speaker 3: fights that everybody's gonna hear about. And we.
- 24:52Speaker 2: Will always, no matter what channel things are wrong, will
- 24:54Speaker 2: always get amazing fights.
- 24:56Speaker 3: The thing that's got to happen is the Monday afterwards,
- 24:59Speaker 3: you go to work, you go somewhere, you go to
- 25:01Speaker 3: the gym, and you're like, did you see the Canili
- 25:02Speaker 3: fight from over the weekend. That's what's got to continue
- 25:04Speaker 3: happening kind of a thing. So yeah, but yeah, like
- 25:08Speaker 3: I said, we're in the area of streaming, and uh,
- 25:11Speaker 3: you know, I'm sure we're here, but by physical media,
- 25:14Speaker 3: folks buy movies and TV shows on disc. This is
- 25:16Speaker 3: my personal gospel here ownership forever. Don't let streaming service
- 25:20Speaker 3: possibly take it from you. We've basically lost the battle.
- 25:24Speaker 3: But there are things on streaming that are here one
- 25:26Speaker 3: day and gone the next. And even there are stories
- 25:29Speaker 3: when people buy movies and TV shows on like Amazon
- 25:31Speaker 3: Prime and some sort of contract gets you know, canceled,
- 25:36Speaker 3: lost or whatever, and now that shit has gone even
- 25:38Speaker 3: though you paid for it. So I'm a big supporter
- 25:40Speaker 3: of physical media, both in movies, TV shows and newdi mags,
- 25:44Speaker 3: as we already spoke about as Wow. All right, Next
- 25:50Speaker 3: up our recurring segment called pop Pugilism, where we discuss
- 25:53Speaker 3: the movie your TV show related to boxing. Today we're
- 25:55Speaker 3: talking about Hens of Stone from twenty sixteen rated R
- 25:59Speaker 3: for language violence, Titties. Directed by Jonathan Jikubuwicks. It stars
- 26:03Speaker 3: Edgar Amirez, Robert de Niro, Added Armis, and Usher Raymond
- 26:06Speaker 3: Fourth who yes is the singer Usher, which I didn't
- 26:09Speaker 3: know before I watched the movie. By the way, that
- 26:11Speaker 3: was his real name. So the movie is a biopic
- 26:14Speaker 3: about Roberto Duran. Before we get into the movie, I
- 26:16Speaker 3: just want to give some quick facts about him. Roberto
- 26:19Speaker 3: Duran boxer from Panama, born in nineteen fifty one. He
- 26:22Speaker 3: was most active in the seventies and eighties, but this
- 26:24Speaker 3: guy kept boxing until two thousand and one. Yep, his
- 26:27Speaker 3: nickname was Manos de Piada which means hens of stone
- 26:29Speaker 3: because he was a very heavy hitter, but he also
- 26:32Speaker 3: had excellent defense. But the poor bastard is still to
- 26:35Speaker 3: this date most well known for a second fight in
- 26:38Speaker 3: nineteen eighty against Sugar Ray Leonard, where he gave up
- 26:40Speaker 3: in round eight and supposedly, supposedly there are conflicting stories,
- 26:45Speaker 3: Duran said, Nomas Nomas, which means no more.
- 26:48Speaker 2: So we'll talk a little bit.
- 26:49Speaker 3: More about that fight in a second, but first I
- 26:50Speaker 3: want to ask Jamison, what did you think of the movie?
- 26:53Speaker 2: Good movie, like really good movie for what it was.
- 26:55Speaker 2: It was very good. I remember when I first came out,
- 26:58Speaker 2: but then like rewatch it again. It was cool, like
- 27:01Speaker 2: it did a very good job of telling the story
- 27:06Speaker 2: and like from the beginning and then the gradualness out
- 27:10Speaker 2: of where you wound up bad and I enjoyed that.
- 27:13Speaker 2: But like most boxers to that air, they grow poor.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Like boxing is not a it's not an elite sport.
- 27:21Speaker 2: It's the sport you get into because you ain't got
- 27:22Speaker 2: to know the choice, and when you're in a third
- 27:24Speaker 2: world country, you definitely don't have another choice. So it's
- 27:27Speaker 2: still a Mango is the Fetus family man and as
- 27:30Speaker 2: a as a kid and going from there getting in
- 27:34Speaker 2: trouble and got good hands, ran to somebody that could
- 27:37Speaker 2: utilize him and can figure out how to make the
- 27:40Speaker 2: best of a situation. The next thing you know, he's
- 27:43Speaker 2: boxing early and whopoping ass and taking names. And it
- 27:46Speaker 2: was just very fascinating how the whole thing and they
- 27:48Speaker 2: got personality right. There's a lot of little things that
- 27:51Speaker 2: were really good. It was very detailed, it was very organized.
- 27:54Speaker 2: I appreciated the thoroughness of the movie. That makes sense.
- 27:58Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, I did enjoy it. I'm maybe a little
- 28:01Speaker 3: less hot on it than you are, you know, I
- 28:04Speaker 3: think I think the first half was a lot better
- 28:06Speaker 3: than the second. I did like that they started off
- 28:08Speaker 3: in Panama, showed the stripes that he grew up in,
- 28:12Speaker 3: and kind of informed him as an adult. It is
- 28:15Speaker 3: very formulaic, like a lot of sports movies are. But
- 28:18Speaker 3: now that we've been watching a bunch of boxing movies,
- 28:20Speaker 3: I'm like, all right, I see it is plug and play.
- 28:22Speaker 3: It is like kind of a one size fits all script,
- 28:26Speaker 3: and it's like it's fine, you know, it's a little
- 28:29Speaker 3: it's hard. And that's why I really like the Clear
- 28:30Speaker 3: the Shields movie. Because it did do something a little
- 28:32Speaker 3: different and showed what happened after the match, and that
- 28:35Speaker 3: was kind of the crux of the story. But but
- 28:38Speaker 3: you know, the movie was good. It was I didn't
- 28:40Speaker 3: think it was bad. I didn't hate it. John Deturo
- 28:43Speaker 3: was in it for a little bit. He's always welcome, Yeah,
- 28:45Speaker 3: he he was a mob guy. Robert de Niro I
- 28:49Speaker 3: thought was a little little flat, just a little coasting
- 28:51Speaker 3: in his older age, you know, just kind of yeah, yeah,
- 28:54Speaker 3: he's you know, he's cashing a paycheck, he's still doing it.
- 28:59Speaker 3: Good for him. But it was really anything like, holy
- 29:01Speaker 3: shit to Nero's in this movie, this is awesome. They
- 29:05Speaker 3: did a whole thing in the middle where apparently his
- 29:08Speaker 3: his like a strange daughter came in the picture out
- 29:10Speaker 3: of nowhere, and you're sup, it didn't really fit in anything.
- 29:13Speaker 3: It's like, what movie am I watching now? Is it
- 29:15Speaker 3: the Nero story? Like, that's not it's not this guy's movie.
- 29:18Speaker 3: He did have a lot as and sorry. DeNiro was
- 29:22Speaker 3: Roberto Duran's trainer ray ourself, so a legendary trainer. Uh so,
- 29:26Speaker 3: of course he's very involved in the movie, but they
- 29:29Speaker 3: kind of didn't need to bring in his personal life. Really,
- 29:32Speaker 3: I think they could have cut that out and we
- 29:34Speaker 3: would have been fine. We've had a good story. But
- 29:37Speaker 3: and I'll say this, I think it gives me a
- 29:38Speaker 3: good sense of Roberto Duran, the guy. Maybe not a
- 29:43Speaker 3: good sense of Roberto and the boxer, his legacy. You know,
- 29:47Speaker 3: the fights were a little like Montagee and it does,
- 29:50Speaker 3: like other boxing films, does burn through, you know, a
- 29:53Speaker 3: big chunk of history for time's sake. But I don't know, I,
- 29:59Speaker 3: like I said, hate it, didn't love it. I do
- 30:01Speaker 3: want to talk about that sugar Ley Renard Sugar Ray
- 30:04Speaker 3: Leonard fight though specifically. So yeah, say I'll say this
- 30:09Speaker 3: before we get into that. The movie does definitely give
- 30:12Speaker 3: Roberto Duran a lot of leeway on that. You might
- 30:16Speaker 3: even say a lot of excuses. But yeah, he the
- 30:19Speaker 3: thing you hear about Roberto Duran. You heard no moss again,
- 30:23Speaker 3: A lot of people that don't know about boxing know
- 30:25Speaker 3: that shit that he gave up and round eight. So
- 30:28Speaker 3: the stories are that he just couldn't handle it. Sugar
- 30:31Speaker 3: Ray Leonard was two gun on his feet, was too fast,
- 30:34Speaker 3: too slick. Duran said, you know, he had to lose
- 30:37Speaker 3: a lot of weight, but a short period. He wasn't
- 30:40Speaker 3: feeling well. He wasn't he was unhappy that Sugar Ray
- 30:44Speaker 3: was too fast on his feet and wasn't actually fighting,
- 30:47Speaker 3: he was dancing or whatever called the mcclown. The movie
- 30:50Speaker 3: definitely was on his side on all that. It gave
- 30:53Speaker 3: all of that setup. So but yeah, I mean, what
- 30:56Speaker 3: do you think, jameson how it's your take on that,
- 30:58Speaker 3: on that legacy of his.
- 31:00Speaker 2: So it was funny because in this day and age,
- 31:02Speaker 2: if a guy was sixty days out and not in shape,
- 31:04Speaker 2: they would make up a random injury and give him
- 31:06Speaker 2: more time. That's what I was waiting for, right because
- 31:09Speaker 2: like we've always heard somebody turned an ankle, or somebody
- 31:12Speaker 2: bump knees with somebody in sparring and now they're out
- 31:14Speaker 2: two months whatever whatever. That When you have an experienced
- 31:18Speaker 2: promotional company, that's where it's supposed to step in, like, hey,
- 31:21Speaker 2: I know we agreed to a deal, but he got hurt.
- 31:24Speaker 2: You buy more time to get in shape. You're rushing
- 31:26Speaker 2: a guy that is not mentally there. It was doomed
- 31:31Speaker 2: for disaster. So this did take place, and it happens.
- 31:35Speaker 2: I also think that we forget the athletes are people too, Like,
- 31:38Speaker 2: I think that's something we all forget, right, Like athletes
- 31:42Speaker 2: are humans and if something's not right, it ain't right
- 31:44Speaker 2: and if nothing you can do about that. This situation,
- 31:47Speaker 2: unfortunately one he was losing the fight. Even on the
- 31:51Speaker 2: actual scorecard if you go back, he was down all
- 31:53Speaker 2: not significantly, but he was down like he was losing.
- 31:56Speaker 2: I think it was like eighty six or eighty five
- 31:58Speaker 2: or something like that. It wasn't like anything crazy, but
- 32:00Speaker 2: it was, you know, it was enough to wear he
- 32:03Speaker 2: was down. But also, here's the thing. Boxing is something
- 32:06Speaker 2: you can't fake. You can't be halfway in. You can't
- 32:10Speaker 2: be kind of pregnant. You either all in or you
- 32:12Speaker 2: all out. And once you get to a point of
- 32:15Speaker 2: being all out, that's what happens. Now You're also facing
- 32:18Speaker 2: a Hall of fame opponent who's very athletic and motivated
- 32:22Speaker 2: at that. So all those things, it's like, yeah, and
- 32:26Speaker 2: you're out of shape, Like you're out of shape and
- 32:28Speaker 2: you gotta do something that requires you to be in shape.
- 32:31Speaker 2: Not a good sign. In adversity, his money not a
- 32:34Speaker 2: good sign.
- 32:36Speaker 3: I was walking the dog and the dog wanted to run.
- 32:37Speaker 3: I was like, okay, I'll try to keep up with
- 32:39Speaker 3: you while out of shape, and that fucking sucked. Imagine
- 32:41Speaker 3: being in a ring with Sugar Ray Leonard for fifteen downds.
- 32:44Speaker 3: My god, No, yeah, I actually have you watched the
- 32:48Speaker 3: actual match like on YouTube? Yes, yeah, I watched it
- 32:51Speaker 3: too before this, And yeah, I mean you could tell
- 32:54Speaker 3: Sugar Ray Leonard was out boxing Duran like he was
- 32:57Speaker 3: too fast on his feet, and it could be this
- 32:59Speaker 3: whole like old school of like, well he's dancing and
- 33:02Speaker 3: the coop here to fight. Now, man, that's part of
- 33:04Speaker 3: it too. Footwork is very important part of it being
- 33:06Speaker 3: a boxer, and if you can't keep up with it,
- 33:08Speaker 3: you can't keep up with it, you know. Don't don't
- 33:09Speaker 3: say that he's like bad at boxing or not boxing
- 33:13Speaker 3: because he's you know, light on his feet, you know,
- 33:15Speaker 3: and so the reason you jump rope passhole. So but
- 33:18Speaker 3: but yeah, he did say Robert orand did say that.
- 33:20Speaker 3: He never actually said the words nomas. He said he
- 33:25Speaker 3: was sitting no siego, no sigo, which means I won't
- 33:27Speaker 3: go on. That could be a technicality. I just think
- 33:30Speaker 3: if it's true that he never said it, it sucks
- 33:32Speaker 3: that that's what you're known for. They even call it
- 33:35Speaker 3: the Nomas fight, so that I think that kind of sucks.
- 33:38Speaker 2: Rap songs Jay Z said it like twenty five years ago.
- 33:42Speaker 2: It's just one of those things where it's known and
- 33:45Speaker 2: he's known as the guy as that, and it's never
- 33:47Speaker 2: good since boxing is such a tough sport. When you're
- 33:50Speaker 2: known as a guy that did something untough, it's not
- 33:53Speaker 2: a good thing.
- 33:55Speaker 3: Lasila Macheko from Ukraine they say that when he was
- 33:58Speaker 3: I don't know if it was an amateur in this
- 33:59Speaker 3: early pro career, but they called him no Maschenko because
- 34:02Speaker 3: he beat his beat. His opponents asked so bad they
- 34:06Speaker 3: all gave up, so he got the dick same based
- 34:09Speaker 3: on this thing.
- 34:09Speaker 2: So that's a little different. That's dope though, that's a
- 34:12Speaker 2: little different.
- 34:13Speaker 3: True, true, Okay, I'm not saying that's a bad thing.
- 34:15Speaker 3: I'm just saying it sucks for Duran that like that's
- 34:18Speaker 3: what you're known for, even especially if you never it
- 34:20Speaker 3: was true, you never said it.
- 34:20Speaker 2: But I don't know.
- 34:21Speaker 3: I mean, like I said, the movie did give him
- 34:23Speaker 3: a lot of a lot of leeway on it, and
- 34:26Speaker 3: we'll never really know the truth. But if if I
- 34:29Speaker 3: were to put my money on something, it was that
- 34:31Speaker 3: he just couldn't handle Sugary Len because I did read
- 34:35Speaker 3: that after the first fight, Sugar Ray was like on him,
- 34:40Speaker 3: he was flat footed. He took those fights and I
- 34:42Speaker 3: saw some highlights on that. He took some fucking bombs.
- 34:45Speaker 3: He handled some of those, uh Duran bombs so well.
- 34:49Speaker 3: But in the second one he changed up his strategy,
- 34:51Speaker 3: so Duran wasn't ready for it. That's what I think.
- 34:54Speaker 3: I mean, still an amazing boxer at the time, you know,
- 34:56Speaker 3: probably one of the best in the world, and them
- 34:59Speaker 3: was the man you know, Uh, question for you because
- 35:03Speaker 3: we are the Mixed Company podcast. So Duran, you know,
- 35:07Speaker 3: amazing fighter from Panama, seemed to be unbeatable. What is
- 35:13Speaker 3: the sort of the legacy in the black community of
- 35:15Speaker 3: after he lust or was it like we got that motherfucker,
- 35:18Speaker 3: We got his ass.
- 35:18Speaker 2: Absolutely absolutely, no no doubt about it. Like that's especially
- 35:23Speaker 2: with that kind of fight, Absolutely no no doubt about it.
- 35:26Speaker 2: Plus it's also Sugarye is one of ours, like that's
- 35:30Speaker 2: us and he's on TV. He's at that time, Remember
- 35:33Speaker 2: he was covered differently. He was kind of like the
- 35:34Speaker 2: Golden Boy, you know. Uh, he had the look, he
- 35:38Speaker 2: had the style, he had the you know, the record.
- 35:41Speaker 2: He fought everybody as well too, So he was the guy.
- 35:44Speaker 2: He's the guy that the women knew. He was the
- 35:46Speaker 2: guy that the the the person who doesn't necessarily follow boxing.
- 35:50Speaker 2: They saw him, he had commercials. So it's a little
- 35:53Speaker 2: bit different than maybe somebody like Tom Hearns, you know
- 35:57Speaker 2: what I mean. So it's a little different, you know
- 35:59Speaker 2: what I mean. So that's where it's like, it's more
- 36:01Speaker 2: than just a boxing fan. It's the everybody involved that one.
- 36:06Speaker 2: So yeah, as a whole, most definitely gotcha.
- 36:10Speaker 3: Yeah, well, you know the guys. The guy's still around,
- 36:13Speaker 3: he's still alive, and he recorded some salsa albums which
- 36:17Speaker 3: I listened to. Not bad, actually not bad.
- 36:19Speaker 2: So yeah, you know, tell me a good job with boxing,
- 36:23Speaker 2: all things considered, for someone that's not an athlete, he
- 36:26Speaker 2: did as well as you can expect someone to do.
- 36:29Speaker 3: Absolutely. So yeah, the movie. You know, we rate these
- 36:32Speaker 3: films out of four gloves.
- 36:34Speaker 2: What would you say, three point two five?
- 36:37Speaker 3: Three point two five, I'd go like two point seventy five.
- 36:39Speaker 3: Like I said, that second half kind of it was rough.
- 36:42Speaker 2: The second half was rough. I'm not gonna lie. It
- 36:44Speaker 2: was wrong.
- 36:45Speaker 3: Listen to I was, we completely forgot you know, Usher
- 36:48Speaker 3: as Sugar Ray Leonard. What did you think about that?
- 36:50Speaker 3: I was actually kind of impressed and with his portrayal
- 36:53Speaker 3: of it.
- 36:54Speaker 2: Yeah, it was very good. It was very good. A
- 36:56Speaker 2: lot of the I was I didn't know I just
- 37:00Speaker 2: had that in him. I was very impressed with everything
- 37:02Speaker 2: about it. Like we I mean, if you follow a
- 37:04Speaker 2: box of course you know about Sugary Leonard and you
- 37:06Speaker 2: know a lot of the things personal life, et cetera.
- 37:08Speaker 2: But just the way he acted about it was like
- 37:11Speaker 2: it would like a boxer would like you lose. Things happened,
- 37:14Speaker 2: but I need that fight right back, make that happen
- 37:16Speaker 2: right now. Like that was dope to see, Like that
- 37:19Speaker 2: was really cool.
- 37:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I was impressed.
- 37:21Speaker 2: You know.
- 37:21Speaker 3: Yeah, if you're if you're a boxer, you know Sugar
- 37:23Speaker 3: Ray Leonard. If you or if you're into boxing, you
- 37:25Speaker 3: know Sugar Eate Leonard. If you were alive in two
- 37:27Speaker 3: thousand and four, you know Usher, because that's when, yeah,
- 37:29Speaker 3: it came out and that shit was everywhere. Uh but yeah,
- 37:32Speaker 3: so yeah, no, I was, I was impressed. Like I said,
- 37:35Speaker 3: I didn't realize that he had it in him as
- 37:37Speaker 3: you did, you know, I know he did a couple
- 37:38Speaker 3: of acting roles, but what he was like in the
- 37:40Speaker 3: faculty when for you know, five minutes, so I think
- 37:44Speaker 3: that was the first thing he was in that was
- 37:45Speaker 3: a big deal at the time. But yeah, you know,
- 37:48Speaker 3: decent movie. Definitely, I'll finish off with this. If you're
- 37:51Speaker 3: a fan of Ana Datamus, definitely watch this movie and
- 37:54Speaker 3: I'll leave it at that. So yep, yep, all right,
- 37:58Speaker 3: let's move on to the mailback section. Got another one
- 38:01Speaker 3: from our our buddy here, Edwin l He's got a
- 38:06Speaker 3: fun one. Are you ready for this one? Jameson? All right?
- 38:10Speaker 3: Would you rather fight one heavyweight sized duck or one
- 38:15Speaker 3: hundred duck sized heavyweights? Me? So, I guess you'd have
- 38:20Speaker 3: to pick a heavyweight first, but like.
- 38:22Speaker 2: One, I'll do one one duck anything and take my chances.
- 38:29Speaker 3: But what if it's a heavyweight the size of what
- 38:30Speaker 3: if it's the ducks the size of Tightson Ferior, it's
- 38:32Speaker 3: like six nine.
- 38:33Speaker 2: I don't want a hundred.
- 38:35Speaker 3: You can't win, But is it had it's not one
- 38:37Speaker 3: hundred ducks, it's a hundred dudes. Heavyweight fighters that are
- 38:40Speaker 3: the size of ducks. So you're still fighting little dudes,
- 38:42Speaker 3: you can.
- 38:43Speaker 2: I don't want to. Yeah, I don't fight one whatever,
- 38:45Speaker 2: one of whatever that weighs two and eighty or I'll
- 38:48Speaker 2: pick my chances that.
- 38:51Speaker 3: Well, then that was easier than I expected. I thought
- 38:53Speaker 3: you were gonna be a little more.
- 38:54Speaker 2: I don't want a hundred things. You can't fighting a
- 38:56Speaker 2: hundred little kids. You can't win. You can't. You can't
- 39:00Speaker 2: them all at once.
- 39:01Speaker 3: Sure, but I'm willing to find out if that's the case.
- 39:03Speaker 3: But when it comes to ducks, yeah, I guess you're right.
- 39:05Speaker 3: Like a duck, here's the thing. I would pick a
- 39:08Speaker 3: duck that is the size of Mike Tyson because he's
- 39:11Speaker 3: like the only halfway that I can think of off the
- 39:13Speaker 3: top of my head that's under six feet tall. I
- 39:15Speaker 3: think he's like five ten. I'm a five nine, So
- 39:18Speaker 3: you know, like duncan I'll take yeah, yeah, like one
- 39:21Speaker 3: one Mike Tyson sized duck. He's weighs as much as
- 39:24Speaker 3: he does. But you know, I don't know, Bob and
- 39:26Speaker 3: weaves through the bill or the neck or whatever, kind
- 39:29Speaker 3: of go low and try to get the neck because
- 39:31Speaker 3: there's a lot of neck on that fucker. So right, Yeah,
- 39:33Speaker 3: but you don't think it's easy to just kick over
- 39:35Speaker 3: like one hundred.
- 39:36Speaker 2: Mike Tyson's nah, no, I'll take the one. I'll take
- 39:39Speaker 2: my chances.
- 39:40Speaker 3: That's cool. I mean, I guess, yeah, I guess. People
- 39:42Speaker 3: don't really know how much one hundred things.
- 39:43Speaker 2: Are, right. You can't you can't do it. It's not possible. O.
- 39:48Speaker 3: Good, all right, thank you, Edwin ll that's the question
- 39:52Speaker 3: I really appreciate. Really fucking stupid, but I appreciate it anyway.
- 39:56Speaker 3: So yeah, that's the show man that that was fun. Jamison.
- 39:59Speaker 3: Where can people find you?
- 39:59Speaker 2: O social media at Twitter at the Jamison always looking
- 40:03Speaker 2: into talk people and have good fun there. And yeah,
- 40:06Speaker 2: it's gonna be very fun.
- 40:07Speaker 3: Come.
- 40:07Speaker 2: We have a big year for boxing, a lot of big fights,
- 40:09Speaker 2: even though they might be on different streaming networks and
- 40:11Speaker 2: what now, it's gonna be a big year for boxing
- 40:13Speaker 2: no matter what. Yeah.
- 40:14Speaker 3: Absolutely, And if you're kind of curious about some fights
- 40:17Speaker 3: they're big enough and you don't want to pay for
- 40:19Speaker 3: a streaming up a pay per view, you can always
- 40:21Speaker 3: find a bar, you know, to a sports bar. They're
- 40:22Speaker 3: playing those and that that's a lot of fun. I
- 40:24Speaker 3: do that whenever I can. So you right over there.
- 40:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm good. I'm good. Went down with a lot
- 40:31Speaker 2: of went down the wrong.
- 40:31Speaker 3: Way, So you're scared of fighting those one hundred stuck
