Speaker 4: we have the daytime games on ESPN and then the

Speaker 4: evening sessions on the WCCHS network. However, today we're gonna

Speaker 4: make a bit of a switch up, as we will

Speaker 4: have coverage of Nitro and Ripley later this morning around
• 2:48
Speaker 4: eleven o'clock or so here on on WCCHS. So we'll

• 3:13
Speaker 4: you have not done so already. Coming up a little
• 3:15
Speaker 4: bit later on the show, I want to talk about
• 3:17
Speaker 4: a little thing called read a Palooza. It's an annual
• 3:20
Speaker 4: fundraiser from the Read Aloud West Virginia folks. It's happening Thursday,
• 3:24
Speaker 4: April third at the University of Charleston. Don Miller from
• 3:28
Speaker 4: the Group of Joint Us to talk about that. Plus
• 3:30
Speaker 4: we got news out of Morgantown. I mean, you know,
• 3:33
Speaker 4: for the second consecutive day that seems to be dominated
• 3:35
Speaker 4: on everyone's social media as coach Darren Derees announced late
• 3:40
Speaker 4: afternoon yesterday that what had been rumored, He's going to
• 3:43
Speaker 4: be heading to Indiana to be the head basketball coach
• 3:47
Speaker 4: of there. This all comes following the controversy from the
• 3:51
Speaker 4: press conference in WQ being left out of the tournament.
• 3:54
Speaker 4: We'll talk about that a little bit later on in
• 3:56
Speaker 4: the show as well. Plus your calls in text to

• 4:14
Speaker 4: look I said that when you walk in, I said,
• 4:16
Speaker 4: ladies and gentlemen, Johnny Cash in the form of Millie Snyder.
• 4:19
  Speaker 4: How you doing.
• 4:20
Speaker 6: I'm doing great. How are you Dad?
• 4:21
Speaker 4: I'm doing fine. Thank you for being you. See, it's
• 4:24
Speaker 4: great to see you as well, because.
• 4:25
Speaker 6: I can only see a part of you because we
• 4:27
Speaker 6: have all this stuff in between.
• 4:29
Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, it's not like it used to be. But
• 4:32
Speaker 4: maybe perhaps, yes next next time. Yes, we'll be in
• 4:37
Speaker 4: the new studio, which is the building. It's the part
• 4:40
Speaker 4: of the building where the old studio was, and we
• 4:43
Speaker 4: will be see I'm trying to picture it in my head.
• 4:46
Speaker 4: You will be sitting to my right there and there
• 4:50
Speaker 4: will be cameras and so on and so. Although I
• 4:53
Speaker 4: don't think the local show is going to be on camera,
• 4:54
Speaker 4: I'm sorry about that. I don't think so. Thank you.
• 4:57
Speaker 6: You mean I'm missing an opportunity.
• 4:58
Speaker 4: Well, no, we'll have you back when a man in
• 5:00
Speaker 4: I start Metro News midday. We'll take your message to
• 5:02
  Speaker 4: the masses.
• 5:03
Speaker 6: Oh that's even better.
• 5:05
Speaker 4: The across the state of way.
• 5:06
Speaker 6: And by the way, my message needs to go to
• 5:08
Speaker 6: the mess it does need to go. Now I have
• 5:10
Speaker 6: to say I am as serious as a heart attack,
• 5:13
Speaker 6: because what my whole driving forces to help people avoid
• 5:18
Speaker 6: a heart attack, avoid health problems if they would change
• 5:22
Speaker 6: their eating habits for something that's not just better, but
• 5:27
Speaker 6: something that is proven by time, because the Mediterranean concept.
• 5:32
Speaker 6: And please everybody listen up, listen. This is not a diet,
• 5:37
Speaker 6: it's a way of life. You don't have to write
• 5:39
Speaker 6: anything down, you don't have to weigh your food as
• 5:42
Speaker 6: long as you eat Mediterranean foods that are not processed
• 5:46
Speaker 6: with chemicals and the other things that go into our foods.
• 5:51
Speaker 6: In fact, tomorrow in our meeting, one of the things
• 5:54
Speaker 6: we're giving out is an informational is the stuff around
• 5:59
Speaker 6: ultra process foods and yeah, they taste good in your mouth,
• 6:04
Speaker 6: but they do damage inside your body. And that's what
• 6:08
Speaker 6: we want to address by changing our eating habits and
• 6:12
Speaker 6: giving up sugar. I know right now everyone's sticking their
• 6:15
Speaker 6: tongue out and saying she can't be saying that. Well,
• 6:18
Speaker 6: she is saying it, and sugar is not a friend.
• 6:21
Speaker 6: And by the way, I like sugar like everybody else,
• 6:24
Speaker 6: but it's not a friend. And I think we should
• 6:28
Speaker 6: strengthen our relationships with the ones who are friends and
• 6:32
Speaker 6: not the pseudo friends. And that's what we've been doing
• 6:35
Speaker 6: for a long time. Because the recipe that you love
• 6:39
Speaker 6: was your mother's and she got it from her mother,
• 6:42
Speaker 6: and she got it from her mother. In the meantime,
• 6:45
Speaker 6: the only thing that it isn't is TNT, which is
• 6:48
Speaker 6: a cute word for dynamite, and it does hurt us.
• 6:52
Speaker 4: But I will say this and you can. And by
• 6:55
Speaker 4: the way, I've got a couple of texts for you
• 6:57
Speaker 4: ready to go here. I will say this. I think
• 7:01
Speaker 4: sometimes when we compare, when you talk about sugar specifically
• 7:06
Speaker 4: and things of that nature, sometimes maybe it's unfair to
• 7:10
Speaker 4: compare lifestyles from one hundred years ago what they are
• 7:14
Speaker 4: now because those people, yeah, they did consume a lot
• 7:18
Speaker 4: of sugar, but they also did something and they didn't
• 7:21
Speaker 4: have the ultra process foods.
• 7:22
Speaker 6: Well, that's true too. But also, and that argument has
• 7:26
Speaker 6: been given to me many many times. Sure, my grandfather
• 7:29
Speaker 6: worked all day long out in the garden in the house,
• 7:34
Speaker 6: but the meantime he died at age fifty four because
• 7:38
Speaker 6: he ate incorrectly. Although he was active and he really
• 7:43
Speaker 6: put in more than a day's work, he still put
• 7:46
Speaker 6: the bad foods in his body, and it did the
• 7:49
Speaker 6: same thing to his body that it does to our
• 7:53
Speaker 6: bodies today. That piece hasn't been changed based on just
• 7:58
Speaker 6: hard work. There are many people who do hard labor.
• 8:03
Speaker 6: But if they eat wrong and they throw down fast food,
• 8:06
Speaker 6: and they throw down foods that are poorly put together,
• 8:11
Speaker 6: it's the same endgame. And we mustn't kid ourselves simply
• 8:16
Speaker 6: by saying well because they worked hard. Yes, back literally,
• 8:21
Speaker 6: they didn't have some of the conveniences that would dig
• 8:25
Speaker 6: up the ground, that would fix the soil for planting,
• 8:29
Speaker 6: and now there are machines that actually do the planting.
• 8:33
Speaker 6: And so my argument is not just to win an argument.
• 8:37
Speaker 6: I don't want to just win an argument. I want
• 8:39
Speaker 6: to help people change lives. That's what I want to do.
• 8:43
Speaker 4: Well, Can I read this text here? Because this is
• 8:45
Speaker 4: pretty cool. This is a text that we got here,
• 8:47
Speaker 4: And I'm going to only read this text because I
• 8:49
Speaker 4: know that all the bosses are upstairs in a meeting
• 8:51
Speaker 4: right now. All I mean, the big guys in the president.
• 8:55
Speaker 4: I need to get nerds, the president of the company,
• 8:57
Speaker 4: mister Pellettier's in the building today and he's there with
• 9:00
Speaker 4: all of the sales weasels upstairs right now, so I
• 9:03
Speaker 4: know they're not listening. So I can read this text.
• 9:05
Speaker 4: It says Millie's message needs to go to the masses
• 9:08
Speaker 4: before the food we eat goes to our asses.
• 9:10
Speaker 6: Wow, thank you whoever you are.
• 9:13
Speaker 4: See. I can say that because they're upstairs. I got
• 9:15
Speaker 4: that they're not listening to me.
• 9:17
Speaker 6: And yeah, people go on vacation and they go on
• 9:20
Speaker 6: a cruis. A woman came over to me sometime ago
• 9:22
Speaker 6: and she said, what am I going to do? The
• 9:24
Speaker 6: ship that I'm going to be on serves food twenty
• 9:27
Speaker 6: four hours a day. And I looked at her and
• 9:29
Speaker 6: I said, so, what does that mean? Because it's available
• 9:33
  Speaker 6: twenty four hours.
• 9:34
Speaker 4: Of food in your refrigerator twenty four hours a day.
• 9:36
Speaker 6: Two exactly right. So that means that you have to
• 9:38
Speaker 6: walk around with one of those feeding bags tied over
• 9:41
Speaker 6: your face, so that you know, people miss a lick.
• 9:43
  Speaker 2: You know.
• 9:44
Speaker 4: I got a good friend of mine who is really
• 9:47
Speaker 4: into nutrition. I mean, he works out, he has been
• 9:49
Speaker 4: as long as I've known. He's actually a former boss
• 9:51
Speaker 4: of mine. And you'll hear a cheap plug on the
• 9:54
Speaker 4: on the Metro News coverage of the basketball games tomorrow,
• 9:58
Speaker 4: Speedy Babins. He's as long as I've known Speedy, he
• 10:01
Speaker 4: is loved that name. Yeah, well I think it's not
• 10:03
Speaker 4: his real name. But Larry Speedy Bevans is a nutrition
• 10:08
Speaker 4: expert and it has been. I went to work for
• 10:10
Speaker 4: him in nineteen ninety three on heving. He was then
• 10:13
Speaker 4: as well he may be listening today. So but but anyway, Uh,
• 10:18
Speaker 4: he has always always preached about about buffets and things
• 10:22
Speaker 4: of that nature because what happens is, and I'm as
• 10:25
Speaker 4: guilty as anybody else.
• 10:27
  Speaker 6: I'm cheap.
• 10:28
Speaker 4: And if I if I pay my whatever feed to
• 10:30
Speaker 4: go to one of these giant trough restaurants, I feel
• 10:34
Speaker 4: like I should get my money's worth. And I'm not
• 10:35
Speaker 4: gonna go and just get one plate. And I'm like, well,
• 10:37
Speaker 4: I may be full, but you know I've paid thirty
• 10:41
Speaker 4: bucks for this. I'm getting my money's worth. And that's
• 10:43
Speaker 4: and and that's why he always said stay away from buffets.
• 10:48
Speaker 6: Thank you. I like him already. I don't know him,
• 10:51
Speaker 6: but he's telling us the truth. And there are people
• 10:53
Speaker 6: who have gone to buffets and before that plate is
• 10:57
Speaker 6: even clean, it's re filled, and not just once, but
• 11:02
Speaker 6: two and three times. And I promise you, Dave, they
• 11:05
Speaker 6: never tasted the first plate, the second, or the third,
• 11:08
Speaker 6: because they're just eating to get food in their body.
• 11:12
Speaker 6: And I've seen it. I've seen it over the years
• 11:15
Speaker 6: of my life. Yeah, they're fun, they're fun to go to,
• 11:19
Speaker 6: but they're not fun what we do to ourselves because
• 11:23
Speaker 6: the size that we have created. By the way, God
• 11:27
Speaker 6: didn't do this. God didn't say, hmm, and he shall
• 11:30
Speaker 6: grow up to be three hundred pounds. That's not the
• 11:33
  Speaker 6: way it worked.
• 11:34
Speaker 4: The way it works, all right. So let's talk about
• 11:37
Speaker 4: these classes. Because you offer these classes wins. The wares
• 11:40
  Speaker 4: give us all.
• 11:41
Speaker 6: That goodwill, prosperity center, the most beautiful meeting rooms, and
• 11:45
Speaker 6: also complimentary wise, we provide water for everybody plus hot coffee,
• 11:51
Speaker 6: and there's no charge for the accruitiments that they offer us.
• 11:56
Speaker 6: And there is a nominal fee to join and a
• 11:59
Speaker 6: weekly and we give great information, class activity and interaction
• 12:05
Speaker 6: among ourselves and group support. And I go back to
• 12:09
Speaker 6: what I brought to West Virginia, which was the weight
• 12:12
Speaker 6: Watchers concept and the thing that made it work was
• 12:16
Speaker 6: group support. Now weight Watchers is in a whole different mindset.
• 12:21
Speaker 6: Now everything is online, and what's missing is being able
• 12:25
Speaker 6: to look at each other and share what's going on
• 12:28
Speaker 6: for one and the other and so on and so forth.
• 12:32
Speaker 6: And so group support means a lot, it.
• 12:35
Speaker 4: Does, and plus you can learn a lot from each
• 12:37
Speaker 4: other too. Well, I tried this or I tried that exactly.
• 12:39
Speaker 6: And tomorrow we're actually going to be tasting homemade Old Ways,
• 12:45
Speaker 6: which is the name of the company that supports our
• 12:47
Speaker 6: information granola that made yesterday at home and we're bringing
• 12:54
  Speaker 6: it in tomorrow.
• 12:55
Speaker 4: I love some granola. Well you shall have some, Okay.
• 12:58
Speaker 4: We was gonna say you could have brought me some today,
• 12:59
Speaker 4: I could have, yeah, but you didn't.
• 13:01
Speaker 6: I didn't, I know, But I got another day or two.
• 13:04
  Speaker 6: I hope, hope.
• 13:06
Speaker 4: It is always a pleasure to have you on the show, now,
• 13:09
Speaker 4: is wee? And to tomorrow is the first day of
• 13:11
Speaker 4: spring officially it is, yeah, like six oh three. I
• 13:14
Speaker 4: think tomorrow morning is the first day.
• 13:15
Speaker 6: I'll probably be up.
• 13:17
Speaker 4: I know I will be all right. So where might
• 13:20
Speaker 4: we see you out at about? Because you've kind of
• 13:22
Speaker 4: altered things, you know, I mean this summer in the spring,
• 13:25
Speaker 4: will you be out out doing stuff?
• 13:27
  Speaker 7: Oh?
• 13:27
Speaker 6: Absolutely, I'm gonna. Well, you know, one of the things
• 13:30
Speaker 6: I'm happiest about. I do have a not great back
• 13:33
  Speaker 6: and I've been using a cane. But i have a
• 13:36
Speaker 6: great trainer that I go to at Nautilus and he
• 13:40
Speaker 6: has helped me get stronger. So the good news is
• 13:43
  Speaker 6: I don't walk with a cane anymore. A little bit
• 13:45
Speaker 6: of weakness here and there, but I got a couple
• 13:49
Speaker 6: of friends every now and then they'll give me an
• 13:50
Speaker 6: arm to lean on. But the fact that without a
• 13:55
Speaker 6: cane and now I want to start looking at some
• 13:58
Speaker 6: trips that I can take, and I don't want to
• 14:00
Speaker 6: have that burden of carrying a cane or slowing a
• 14:03
Speaker 6: group down if I'm with them. But I'm still going
• 14:05
Speaker 6: to be here and I'm going to take care of
• 14:06
Speaker 6: my group, and I'm not going too far away.
• 14:10
Speaker 4: All right, Millie Snyder, it's always a pleasure to talk
• 14:13
  Speaker 4: to you.
• 14:14
Speaker 6: Thank you, and it's great for me to be with you. Dave,

Speaker 4: West Virginia program, happening Thursday, April third, five thirty till

Speaker 4: of the University of Charleston. Don Miller's with the program.

Speaker 4: She joins us now in the Jared Construction Studios. Don,
• 17:54
Speaker 4: good morning, Welcome to the show.
• 17:55
Speaker 10: Good morning, thank you for being here, Thanks for having
• 17:57
  Speaker 10: me back.
• 17:58
Speaker 4: Did you when you were in camp read Millie Snyder
• 18:00
Speaker 4: out in the hall, did you get some of that
• 18:02
Speaker 4: Millie like rub it off on you about all the things,
• 18:05
Speaker 4: and you know, because she's kind of a kind of
• 18:06
Speaker 4: a big old personality.
• 18:08
Speaker 10: Millie is great. I've known her for years.
• 18:09
Speaker 4: That's what I said, you said in the holiday and
• 18:11
Speaker 4: seen her a long time. What's what's your all story?
• 18:13
Speaker 4: How do you know Millie? I mean, everybody knows Mille.
• 18:15
  Speaker 10: Decades ago.
• 18:16
Speaker 11: I was a newspaper reporter and I interviewed Millie and
• 18:19
Speaker 11: and yeah, everybody knows Millie.
• 18:21
Speaker 4: Everybody knows me. I explained the program overall before we
• 18:24
Speaker 4: get to the specific event Read Aloud West Virginia talk
• 18:27
  Speaker 4: about the program.
• 18:28
  Speaker 10: Sure, thank you.
• 18:29
Speaker 11: Read Aloud West Virginia as a homegrown West Virginia organization,
• 18:32
Speaker 11: as you know, and we motivate kids to read for
• 18:35
Speaker 11: fun because when kids read for pleasure, they can't help
• 18:38
Speaker 11: but get better at it. There's all kinds of interesting
• 18:40
Speaker 11: science on this, including what we're increasingly learning to understand.
• 18:45
Speaker 11: One of the biggest factors in reading comprehension is background knowledge.
• 18:52
Speaker 11: So if a child is interested in a subject, whether
• 18:54
Speaker 11: it's dinosaurs or cars or whatever, and they read books
• 18:57
Speaker 11: on that subject, they build background knowledge. And then when
• 19:00
Speaker 11: they go to school and they get these good lessons
• 19:02
Speaker 11: at school, all that background knowledge comes to play and
• 19:05
Speaker 11: they're reading scores just climb, climb, Climb.
• 19:08
Speaker 4: Does it matter in your opinion whether kids are reading
• 19:12
Speaker 4: actual hard books like we grew up on or if
• 19:16
Speaker 4: they're reading them in digitally, because there's a lot of
• 19:19
Speaker 4: I say that because there's a lot of science that
• 19:21
Speaker 4: says that you know, And we talked about cell phones
• 19:23
Speaker 4: in the classroom. On the show yesterday, there's a lot
• 19:26
Speaker 4: of science that says that it's a lot better for
• 19:29
Speaker 4: them not to read it online. But then there's also
• 19:32
Speaker 4: science that says, well, it really doesn't matter.
• 19:34
  Speaker 6: That's right.
• 19:35
Speaker 11: It were you, and it might matter depending on the
• 19:38
Speaker 11: age for the kid or the kid, that's right. So
• 19:42
Speaker 11: the early indications are that print is better, and the
• 19:45
Speaker 11: younger you are, the better it is. Screens are not
• 19:48
Speaker 11: good for us. And the earlier, the longer you can
• 19:52
Speaker 11: delay exposing children to screens, the better for them.
• 19:55
Speaker 4: Are you listening parents in restaurants right now that give
• 19:58
Speaker 4: your kid a phone to keep them How much damage
• 20:01
  Speaker 4: you're doing?
• 20:02
Speaker 6: Editorial? Okay, okay, so be easy. People have to get
• 20:05
  Speaker 6: through the day.
• 20:07
Speaker 10: Got some grace here.
• 20:09
Speaker 11: But we do know some really smart cognitive scientists have
• 20:12
Speaker 11: been studying our brains and studying kids' brains and what
• 20:15
Speaker 11: happens when we expose ourselves to screens. It actually changes
• 20:19
Speaker 11: how our brains work, as opposed to how when we
• 20:22
Speaker 11: expose babies and young children to print and pictures on
• 20:27
Speaker 11: a page. Now, I have this conversation about twice a
• 20:30
Speaker 11: week because I'll go do a presentation and middle schoolers
• 20:33
Speaker 11: will ask me, and adults will ask me, and teachers
• 20:36
Speaker 11: will ask me, and parents will ask me. And the
• 20:40
Speaker 11: technology is so new we have a limited amount information
• 20:45
Speaker 11: about it. The early indications are that babies, toddlers, preschoolers,
• 20:50
Speaker 11: elementary kids do better with print.
• 20:53
Speaker 10: Adults also do better with print.
• 20:55
Speaker 11: But I'm going to tell you I can carry more
• 20:58
Speaker 11: electronic books in my bag than I can and paper books.
• 21:01
Speaker 11: But I learned to read before all this technology, so
• 21:04
Speaker 11: my skills are pretty well established. So that early indication
• 21:09
Speaker 11: is possibly that it's not as hard on us as
• 21:12
Speaker 11: adults as it is on the little ones.
• 21:14
Speaker 4: Where are we And I'll get to your event momentarily,
• 21:17
Speaker 4: But this kind of stuff fascinates where are we on
• 21:20
Speaker 4: reading comprehension because we hear all these studies that come
• 21:23
Speaker 4: out about how West Virginia is lagging behind other states,
• 21:27
Speaker 4: and then we hear how the United States is lagging
• 21:29
Speaker 4: behind other countries, not only on reading. Sometimes it tests
• 21:31
Speaker 4: to do with maths or science or things of that nature. Overall,
• 21:35
Speaker 4: are we getting better?
• 21:37
Speaker 10: We are getting better.
• 21:38
Speaker 11: There's some good things happening, There was some there were
• 21:41
Speaker 11: some poor methods that became popular twenty thirty years ago
• 21:44
Speaker 11: that have been shown to really not be good for kids.
• 21:49
Speaker 10: Some people who went to school forty fifty years ago.
• 21:52
Speaker 11: We'll be happy to know that the people in education
• 21:55
Speaker 11: have figured out that you really do have to have
• 21:58
Speaker 11: intentional instruction that include dudes sounding outwards. There's a lot
• 22:02
Speaker 11: more to it than that, but it but there are
• 22:05
Speaker 11: across the state working on improving that, and it is
• 22:11
Speaker 11: it takes time. Things are not done at the same
• 22:13
Speaker 11: pace everywhere. But I'm seeing improvements in the schools we're in,
• 22:18
Speaker 11: the people we interact with. I am seeing a lot
• 22:21
Speaker 11: of good changes. So West Virginia actually bounced back from
• 22:27
Speaker 11: the when the schools were closed during COVID and then
• 22:30
Speaker 11: all the test scores tanked, which was to be expected
• 22:34
Speaker 11: if they if they didn't go down, it would be
• 22:37
Speaker 11: an indication that they weren't getting anything at school right.
• 22:40
Speaker 11: So but the West Virginia bounced back from that, and
• 22:42
Speaker 11: I think West Virginia is now poised to see reading
• 22:45
Speaker 11: scores steadily climb as these improved methods become regular become
• 22:52
Speaker 11: widely established at schools around the state.
• 22:54
Speaker 4: It is interesting to hear you say that when you
• 22:56
Speaker 4: said those of us that are not you, but I'm
• 23:00
Speaker 4: older than you. But but but but those of us
• 23:02
Speaker 4: that went to school in forty fifty years ago, and
• 23:06
  Speaker 4: I think, hey, wait, that's me. That's me. That's right,
• 23:09
Speaker 4: that that they're they're starting to see that maybe the
• 23:14
Speaker 4: quote unquote old ways weren't so bad after all, and
• 23:16
Speaker 4: that in that true of society in general. Sometimes sometimes
• 23:19
Speaker 4: we look back, we say, really, it wasn't as bad
• 23:22
Speaker 4: as what we what we thought it was. Let's talk
• 23:23
Speaker 4: about this event April thirty.
• 23:26
Speaker 10: You see, thank you. Yes, this is Rita Palooza.
• 23:28
Speaker 11: This is our big fundraiser, friend raiser. It is a
• 23:31
Speaker 11: nice afterwork party. Tickets are forty five dollars. We have
• 23:35
Speaker 11: some amazing sponsors who allow us. That makes it possible
• 23:38
Speaker 11: for us to put this on, so that so that
• 23:40
Speaker 11: the money raised we have a little wine pule. The
• 23:44
Speaker 11: sponsors make this possible. At the top of the list
• 23:47
Speaker 11: is in Cova, followed by Moses Auto Group, United Bank,
• 23:52
  Speaker 11: the Elliott Foundation.
• 23:53
Speaker 10: These sponsors really understand, as.
• 23:56
Speaker 11: All Read Aloud supporters do, that reading well is education,
• 24:00
Speaker 11: for sure, but it's also healthcare, and it's also economic development.
• 24:05
Speaker 10: And the theme this year gets to that.
• 24:07
Speaker 11: It's the theme this year is a ticket to anywhere,
• 24:09
Speaker 11: because reading literally can take you anywhere while you're reading.
• 24:13
Speaker 10: And then also in life you.
• 24:15
Speaker 4: Mentioned your sponsors there and in COVID Moses and some
• 24:17
Speaker 4: of the other ones in there, are there still opportunities available.
• 24:21
Speaker 10: The sponsors at this point there are there are.
• 24:23
  Speaker 4: Selet to us.
• 24:27
Speaker 11: Our sponsors make it possible for us to have a
• 24:30
Speaker 11: thousand some volunteers out around the state and manage that.
• 24:34
Speaker 11: They make it possible for us to give away thirty
• 24:37
Speaker 11: thousand books to children last year.
• 24:39
Speaker 10: And we are a lean little organization.
• 24:45
Speaker 11: We have four staffers and about a thousand volunteers, and
• 24:49
Speaker 11: we save paper and we save I mean, we try
• 24:53
Speaker 11: and put as much of our resources as we can
• 24:56
Speaker 11: into books for kids and getting readers and run of
• 25:00
Speaker 11: kids and move pushing the mission to motivate kids to
• 25:03
  Speaker 11: read for fun.
• 25:04
Speaker 4: And as far as you know, the needing of sponsors
• 25:07
Speaker 4: and you mentioned that the big ones, but individual sponsors
• 25:10
Speaker 4: are always welcome. Community organizations, your rotary Kawanas, anybody like
• 25:14
Speaker 4: that could probably get involved in.
• 25:15
  Speaker 3: This as well.
• 25:16
  Speaker 10: That's right.
• 25:17
Speaker 11: And if somebody wants to just get involved and see
• 25:20
Speaker 11: how it goes, get to know us more, they can
• 25:23
Speaker 11: find us at our website read aloud wv dot org.
• 25:25
Speaker 11: You can buy tickets there, you can volunteer to be
• 25:28
Speaker 11: a reader, you can get more information. The party should
• 25:33
Speaker 11: be nice. It's a couple hours after work, so it's
• 25:36
Speaker 11: low stress. You don't have to change clothes. You just
• 25:39
Speaker 11: you don't have to dress up. You just come and
• 25:42
Speaker 11: enjoy some fellowship with some friends. There's a wine pool
• 25:46
Speaker 11: that's gotten very popular the last few years.
• 25:48
Speaker 4: Explain a wine pool to me.
• 25:50
Speaker 11: So we get volunteers, we get donors who give us
• 25:52
Speaker 11: bottles of wine, and each one is worth at least
• 25:55
Speaker 11: twenty dollars, but many of them are.
• 25:56
Speaker 10: Worth thirty or forty or fifty dollars.
• 25:58
Speaker 11: And then at the event, you buy a wine pool
• 26:01
Speaker 11: ticket and you get a random bottle of wine. So
• 26:04
Speaker 11: you're at the very least you're gonna get your twenty
• 26:06
Speaker 11: dollars worth back, but you might get one of the
• 26:09
Speaker 11: more expensive bottles of wine, which is always fun and
• 26:11
Speaker 11: creates a nice little pardon.
• 26:13
Speaker 10: The pun creates a nice little buzz there.
• 26:17
Speaker 4: You said that, not me.
• 26:18
  Speaker 10: I'm sorry.
• 26:19
Speaker 4: It's all good. It's all good. And by the way,
• 26:21
Speaker 4: I will say this, if you've never had a chance
• 26:23
Speaker 4: to visit the Irma Bird Center there with this is
• 26:28
Speaker 4: being held. That's a beautiful venue.
• 26:30
Speaker 10: I think it's the most beautiful room in town.
• 26:31
Speaker 4: It is. It's very very I went there for the
• 26:33
Speaker 4: first for an event a couple of years ago. I'd
• 26:35
Speaker 4: never never been there either, and I went. I was like, man,
• 26:38
  Speaker 4: I didn't know about this. I mean, University Charleston's got
• 26:41
Speaker 4: a nice little gem there. They do Jim being ge

• 32:43
Speaker 4: I did a little checking because this text actually came
• 32:45
Speaker 4: in before the show, and I actually did a little
• 32:47
Speaker 4: checking on that, and I did not have the information
• 32:50
Speaker 4: in front of me, but I sent it out to
• 32:51
Speaker 4: a couple of people, So we'll see if this helps.
• 32:53
Speaker 4: Brad mcilhanney, friend of the program who's at the Capitol day,
• 32:57
Speaker 4: talked to Brad and he said that there was Mike
• 33:00
Speaker 4: Pushkin that tweeted the final committee vote in the bill,
• 33:02
Speaker 4: and Brad retweeted it, but the amendment, says Brad, was
• 33:06
Speaker 4: what really made that change, and there was a separate
• 33:08
Speaker 4: vote on the amendment. And he goes on to say,
• 33:12
Speaker 4: this is Brad, that maybe Pushkin has a role call
• 33:14
Speaker 4: on the amendment, but I do not. Also, another friend
• 33:19
Speaker 4: of the program who I reached out to said it
• 33:22
Speaker 4: was a voice vote in committee, and there was no
• 33:25
Speaker 4: way to know unless you were there in person. Role
• 33:29
Speaker 4: call was not demanded. And this person goes on to say,
• 33:33
Speaker 4: the Health Committee offered a strike and insert amendment and
• 33:35
Speaker 4: remove the exemptions voice vote adoption. When it gets the
• 33:38
Speaker 4: second reading on the floor, the effort to amend the
• 33:41
Speaker 4: exemptions back into the bill will be fierce, says a texture.
• 33:45
Speaker 4: So I hope that helped out a little bit, but
• 33:48
Speaker 4: to a bottom line from what I understand. And then
• 33:51
Speaker 4: Brad and the other person, my inside sources, who shall

• 35:02
Speaker 4: quarters to go play pinball and video games and smoke
• 35:05
Speaker 4: field restaurant game rooms. We turned out great as a texture.
• 35:10
Speaker 4: Well you know, I uh, I will say yeah, I
• 35:16
Speaker 4: was part of that part of that generation too. I
• 35:19
Speaker 4: guess that grew up with things like that, especially the
• 35:22
Speaker 4: smoke field part. Some cigarette smoked today would damn near
• 35:25
Speaker 4: kill me. I'm not gonna lie to you, and I'll
• 35:27
Speaker 4: tell you a quick story. A couple of weeks ago,
• 35:30
Speaker 4: my wife and I were traveling and there was a
• 35:34
Speaker 4: certain restaurant not in this area, a certain restaurant, and
• 35:38
Speaker 4: we wanted to go in and grab a quick bite
• 35:40
Speaker 4: to eat. Well, it was a restaurant slash bar, but
• 35:44
Speaker 4: we were there at like twelve or one o'clock in
• 35:46
Speaker 4: the afternoon on a Saturday, and so I had eaten
• 35:51
Speaker 4: at this restaurant before. She had not, and so I said, well,
• 35:54
Speaker 4: let's go try this place. And so we go in
• 35:57
Speaker 4: and open up the door. And I guess because we
• 35:59
Speaker 4: were the only people in the place that the staff
• 36:03
Speaker 4: had no issue with smoking, because they probably were thinking, well,
• 36:07
Speaker 4: we're getting ready for the dinner crowd. Who in the
• 36:09
Speaker 4: right mind comes to a bar slash lounge to eat
• 36:11
Speaker 4: lunch on at one o'clock on a Saturday afternoon. That
• 36:13
Speaker 4: would be me and my wife. And so we walked
• 36:17
Speaker 4: in it, took one step and walked right back out
• 36:19
Speaker 4: the door. Because I got girly lungs these days, man,
• 36:22
Speaker 4: I can't handle it. I cannot handle cigarette smoke at all.
• 36:26
Speaker 4: Little side note there in case you were wondering, if
• 36:27
Speaker 4: you're thinking about lighting a cigarette around me, please don't.
• 36:30
Speaker 4: And what's interesting about that was when I got into radio,
• 36:34
Speaker 4: I was the only person in the entire building in
• 36:38
Speaker 4: nineteen eighty eight, at seventeen years old, at the radio station,
• 36:41
Speaker 4: where I started, I was the only person that did
• 36:44
Speaker 4: not smoke, right down to the janitors, to the secretary
• 36:47
Speaker 4: of the salespeople, all the everybody smoked. And it didn't
• 36:50
Speaker 4: seem to bother me then, But gosh, I cannot stand
• 36:53
Speaker 4: it now. So Engine, in case you were wondering, Texas Boy,
• 36:56
Speaker 4: the governor and the Attorney General looked bad after North
• 36:59
Speaker 4: Carolina one the game going away. We all know that
• 37:02
Speaker 4: WVU was in that game. They would have blown it
• 37:05
Speaker 4: and lost, says at Texas text says, why are they
• 37:09
Speaker 4: sniffing the seats? Okay, Texas day, We've got a solution
• 37:17
Speaker 4: to allow kids to work at thirteen to fourteen. Let's
• 37:19
Speaker 4: just be like the Amish. Let them drop out of
• 37:22
Speaker 4: school in the fourth grade and go to work. Because
• 37:25
Speaker 4: the legislature has destroyed public education and they're taking books
• 37:28
Speaker 4: out of libraries. They don't have internet on phones and computers.
• 37:31
Speaker 4: They read what they want, says a Texter. So the
• 37:38
Speaker 4: big story again seems to revolve around sports. Yesterday it
• 37:43
Speaker 4: was the comments made by Governor Morrissey and Attorney General
• 37:49
Speaker 4: McCuskey about WV being left out of the NCAA tournament. Now,
• 37:53
Speaker 4: those comments, of course were made on Monday, but you
• 37:56
Speaker 4: know we talked about them. The train actually had McCuskey on
• 37:59
Speaker 4: the show, yes, and he was also on talk Line,
• 38:01
Speaker 4: and Governor Morrissey will be on with the talk Line
• 38:04
Speaker 4: today as well. And now comes word not really that
• 38:09
Speaker 4: shocking that after one year, Darren Devrees is bolting Morgantown
• 38:14
Speaker 4: for Indiana, Greg Carey and end depth story posted about
• 38:18
Speaker 4: this morning wv metronews dot com. This is the third
• 38:21
Speaker 4: time in twenty one months that WVU will be on
• 38:26
Speaker 4: the hunt for a new men's basketball coach. Now interesting
• 38:32
Speaker 4: were the comments that WVU Athletic Director Rind Baker made, who,
• 38:36
Speaker 4: in this statement said, and I've shortened it a little
• 38:38
Speaker 4: bit for airtime, but in this statement said quote, I
• 38:41
Speaker 4: made it clear to him, meaning the coach, that WVU
• 38:44
Speaker 4: is committed to invest in him and to provide him
• 38:47
Speaker 4: the resources needed to compete in the Big twelve and nationally. Ultimately, though,
• 38:53
Speaker 4: he decided to move on, and I want to thank
• 38:55
Speaker 4: him for that, says the texture. Now did he mean
• 38:58
Speaker 4: I want to thank him for more be on or
• 39:00
Speaker 4: to thank him for his time? I think he probably
• 39:02
Speaker 4: met his time spent there at WU. And when I
• 39:06
Speaker 4: read into ren Baker's statement there, I mean to me,
• 39:08
Speaker 4: it says, look, we were willing to give you what
• 39:12
Speaker 4: you felt you needed, but you left anyway. That's the
• 39:20
Speaker 4: way I read it. And that's one of the things
• 39:21
Speaker 4: when coaches leave, whether it's West Virginia or Marshall or
• 39:25
Speaker 4: any other program, that they say as well, you know,
• 39:28
Speaker 4: or when they're wane whether they want to go to
• 39:30
Speaker 4: a particular school, one of the things they always look
• 39:33
Speaker 4: at is the facilities. You know, what kind of facilities
• 39:36
Speaker 4: are you going to give me? I need an indoor
• 39:37
Speaker 4: practice facility, I need all these other things. And the
• 39:41
Speaker 4: way I read it from Ren Baker was is like, hey,
• 39:43
Speaker 4: we were willing to give you what you want, but
• 39:45
Speaker 4: you left anyway. That was my read. The Mountaineers went
• 39:49
Speaker 4: nineteen and thirteen and they had ten wins into Big
• 39:52
Speaker 4: twelve and a couple, if you'll recall, a couple of
• 39:56
Speaker 4: big time non conference wins over Gonzaga and Arizona, and
• 40:00
Speaker 4: then after being left out of the Big Dance, they
• 40:03
Speaker 4: declined to take part in any other postseason tournaments. The
• 40:09
Speaker 4: Indiana job was once one of the most coveted positions
• 40:15
Speaker 4: and programs in the country. I mean, you think about
• 40:19
Speaker 4: it's Indiana. You know Bobby Knight and all that went
• 40:21
Speaker 4: along with it. That's been a long time since then.
• 40:24
Speaker 4: As Greg Carrey's story points out at the website, the
• 40:26
Speaker 4: Hoosiers have made the NCAA tournament only twice since twenty
• 40:30
Speaker 4: seventeen and have had four Sweet sixteen appearances four since
• 40:35
Speaker 4: nineteen ninety four. And now to the money, Devrees had
• 40:41
Speaker 4: a five year deal with a salary of two point
• 40:44
Speaker 4: eight million dollars this season. Had he stayed, his salary
• 40:50
Speaker 4: would have gone up one hundred grand over the next
• 40:54
Speaker 4: four years. Now now that he's gone off to one
• 40:57
Speaker 4: big John Mellencamp video in India, Yanha, he will owe
• 41:02
Speaker 4: back thirty seven and a half percent of his remaining contract.
• 41:07
Speaker 4: So at least the Golden Blue is he is going
• 41:11
Speaker 4: to get something back. So I guess the question is
• 41:16
Speaker 4: what's next. It's been a rough couple of years for
• 41:19
Speaker 4: Mountaineer basketball. You know them think about it. Some have
• 41:23
Speaker 4: said they want John Beeline back and others, and you
• 41:29
Speaker 4: knew this was coming. The cries are going out to
• 41:34
Speaker 4: bring coach Huggins back. I don't know about that myself.
• 41:41
Speaker 4: I mean, I will say this. From all accounts, Huggs
• 41:44
Speaker 4: has done a good job of getting his head on
• 41:46
Speaker 4: right and he seems to be doing well. I actually
• 41:50
Speaker 4: ran into him at an event last year in Morgantown,
• 41:54
Speaker 4: and this was after he all the incident in Pittsburgh
• 41:57
Speaker 4: and the whole deal, and he had resigned or left
• 42:00
Speaker 4: the program, you know whatever. And he looked like the
• 42:03
Speaker 4: old Bob Huggins to me. And when I say the
• 42:05
Speaker 4: old Bob Huggins, I don't mean that in an derogatory way.
• 42:08
Speaker 4: He didn't have a drink in his hand. He was
• 42:10
Speaker 4: drinking a night coke. I think what I saw him
• 42:11
Speaker 4: at this particular function I was at, and he was,
• 42:14
Speaker 4: you know, jovial and kind of laughing with the crowd
• 42:17
Speaker 4: and so on and so forth. And so there's a
• 42:20
Speaker 4: lot of people that want Hugs back, make no mistake
• 42:22
Speaker 4: about it. I just don't know that that would be
• 42:27
Speaker 4: the right move in my opinion. And I was thinking
• 42:33
Speaker 4: about this earlier this morning. From the time that I
• 42:36
Speaker 4: was a kid, through my teenage years, college years into adulthood,
• 42:42
Speaker 4: when you talked by WVU, you automatically thought Gail Catlet
• 42:49
Speaker 4: and don Neelan, they and it seemed like they were
• 42:52
Speaker 4: there forever, you know. Like I said, I was a
• 42:54
Speaker 4: kid when they were both hired, and they took me
• 42:57
Speaker 4: through my teenage high school years. When I started working
• 43:00
Speaker 4: in radio and running West Virginia University ball games, it
• 43:05
Speaker 4: was Kneelan and it was Catlan, you know, and it
• 43:07
Speaker 4: seemed like they were there a long time. But I
• 43:09
Speaker 4: think the days of having coaches that stick around for
• 43:13
Speaker 4: several years maybe long gone. I'm hopeful though that with
• 43:20
Speaker 4: rich Rod back in Morgantown, and I didn't know whether
• 43:22
Speaker 4: that was the right and I still don't know. Nobody
• 43:23
Speaker 4: knows whether it was the right call or not. I
• 43:25
Speaker 4: was initially for it, but now that he's back in Morgantown,
• 43:30
Speaker 4: and for that matter, let me bringing the alma mater here, Marshall.
• 43:34
Speaker 4: Now that you've got Tony Gibson and Marshall, and I'll
• 43:37
Speaker 4: throw Marshall basketball coach Corney Jackson in there as well.
• 43:40
Speaker 4: At least now you have coaches in place that I
• 43:43
Speaker 4: think get the culture of their respective schools. And with
• 43:46
Speaker 4: Tony Gibson at Marshall, you get someone who is a
• 43:49
Speaker 4: West Virginia, West Virginia being from Boone County about an
• 43:52
Speaker 4: hour hour or so away from Huntington and Corney Jackson
• 43:56
Speaker 4: of o'kill and of course rich Rod and you know,
• 44:01
Speaker 4: you get people I think that get the culture of
• 44:04
Speaker 4: these schools, which I think is important. It's so hard.
• 44:07
Speaker 4: I mean, put yourself in their position. If you were
• 44:10
Speaker 4: a coach and you suddenly had to go coach in Mississippi,
• 44:13
Speaker 4: are you going to get it? Or a utah? You
• 44:15
Speaker 4: know something, especially in smaller areas. West Virginia is a
• 44:18
Speaker 4: rural area, you get that kind of thing, you know,
• 44:21
  Speaker 4: I don't know, I don't know. Wilson and Meadows will
• 44:24
Speaker 4: cover this more on talk Line, and I am told
• 44:26
Speaker 4: an emergency edition of Three Guys was taped last night,
• 44:30
Speaker 4: so see what happens there. Tex says Rinn Baker was
• 44:33
Speaker 4: clearly disappointed in Darren DeVries as as we're almost all
• 44:37
Speaker 4: basketball people in West Virginia. I don't wish him ill,
• 44:40
Speaker 4: but I certainly do not respect him in any way,
• 44:43
Speaker 4: says a Texture. Unrelated to that, Texas, we need to
• 44:46
Speaker 4: support our veterans, to get behind them on the fight
• 44:48
Speaker 4: with Elon and Trump cutting jobs and their benefits. We
• 44:51
Speaker 4: need to stand with veterans, says a Texture. Tex says,
• 44:57
Speaker 4: you think the EXWVU coach didn't want to go to
• 44:59
Speaker 4: the and it because he was leaving. Possibly, I mean
• 45:03
Speaker 4: they had they turned on. They not only turned down
• 45:05
Speaker 4: that tournament, but they also turned down that tournament. The
• 45:07
Speaker 4: big twelve deal that they do in Vegas, they turned
• 45:10
Speaker 4: that down as well. Tex says, wouldn't it be interesting
• 45:13
Speaker 4: if we would start winning again with two OD coaches
• 45:15
Speaker 4: rich Rod and Hugs Interesting? Indeed, older adults to protect
