- Lucas: Luna, welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. I'm Lucas, and today we're going to the market again. Luna: Ohh I love market episodes. They feel so real. What are we buying today? Lucas: We're buying papaya — betik in Malay. It's a sweet, orange fruit, very common in Malaysia. Luna: Betik. I've seen them at the market, big and oblong. Okay, I'm ready. Teach me. Lucas: First, the basic phrase: Saya mahu betik. That means 'I want papaya.' Say it with me: Saya mahu betik. Luna: Saya mahu betik. Lucas: Good. Now, when you want to ask the price per fruit, you say: Berapa harga sebiji? Sebiji means 'one fruit' or 'one piece.' So, Berapa harga sebiji? Luna: Berapa harga sebiji? Lucas: Perfect. Let's imagine you see a nice papaya and you want to know if it's sweet. You ask: Betik ini manis? — 'Is this papaya sweet?' Manis means sweet. Luna: Betik ini manis? Lucas: Yes. And if you want two, you say: Saya mahu dua biji. Dua is two, biji is the counter for fruit. So, Saya mahu dua biji. Luna: Saya mahu dua biji. Lucas: Great. Finally, if you need help choosing a ripe one, say: Boleh tolong pilihkan yang masak? Masak means ripe. Boleh tolong pilihkan yang masak? Luna: Boleh tolong pilihkan yang masak? That's a mouthful but I'll get it. Lucas: You will. Let's practice a short scene. You walk up to a stall. Luna: Saya mahu betik. Berapa harga sebiji? Lucas: The seller says, 'Three ringgit per fruit.' You point to a big one. Luna: Betik ini manis? Lucas: Yes, very sweet. You say, 'Saya mahu dua biji.' Then you add, 'Boleh tolong pilihkan yang masak?' Luna: Saya mahu dua biji. Boleh tolong pilihkan yang masak? Lucas: Excellent. You just bought two ripe papayas. Luna: That felt good. I can see myself actually using this. Lucas: And if Fexingo has been helping you make progress with Malay, you know what keeps it ad-free and going — listener support. Lucas: Boleh tolong pilihkan yang masak? Luna: Boleh tolong pilihkan yang masak? Lucas: Wonderful. Now you're ready to buy papaya at any market in Malaysia.
