- 0:00Track Uss the Galaxy's most unpredictable Start Trek podcast. Here we are here,
- 0:24we are live Sunday morning. Wait a minute, yeah, exactly Wednesday,
- 0:29Wednesday. Yeah uh so for those of you guys watching, we are live
- 0:34breaking news, big breaking news. Probably shouldn't shy away from what's going on.
- 0:39If you guys have seen the reports, Paramount and Warner Brothers are in
- 0:44talks for a merger and this was first reported by Axios and it's kind of
- 0:51a big deal. So I thought we should just breaking news. So Scott
- 0:53has joined me for this. Scott's going man, it's going great, going
- 0:58great. Looking forward to hearing what's going on. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:00absolutely. And to help us with this, we are bringing in Astor
- 1:06from Daily Star trek News dot com. Astor is one of the reporters there.
- 1:11You want to introduce yourself to everybody, Astor, Yeah, I'd love
- 1:15to hi. I'm Astor, a big Star Trek fan. Like Daniel said,
- 1:19I work at Daily Star Trek News. I'm just kind of a big
- 1:22nerd and I got offered a really cool job and now I'm here. So
- 1:26right, that's awesome. I love it on so Fillo sen ask what's going
- 1:30on with this merger talks? What do we know so far? So basically
- 1:34on Tuesday, Warner Brothers and Paramount just they met in New York City to
- 1:40talk about the possibility of merging and this the main motivation from this for this,
- 1:46from what I can tell, is basically after Disney Plus and Hulu merged,
- 1:52they need to be a competitive streaming platform now because no one really has
- 1:55Max or Paramount Plus unless they're really into one of those shows. So they're
- 1:59trying to become a more competitive streaming platform as the main motivation right now,
- 2:06it's just talks, though, Warner Brothers are getting their bankers to look into
- 2:10it, and that's pretty much the news. Okay. The biggest effect that
- 2:16this has been in like real life is there has been a twelve percent rise
- 2:20in the Paramount stock, right yeah, yeah, yes, yeah, Well,
- 2:27I mean this could be a big thing for for both Paramount and Discovery.
- 2:30They're you know, they're not as big as Disney or Apple or Amazon
- 2:34as far as entertainment media, so combining the two kind of does give them
- 2:38a bigger footprint in the market. I know that Paramount has a pretty good
- 2:44distribution internationally and so that could be a big benefit for Warner Brothers as well.
- 2:52I know Warner Brothers, they do have their distribution, but typically they
- 2:54partner with out the distributors to get their films out. So if they have
- 2:59that already in house through Paramount, that could be a big thing for them.
- 3:05Okay, okay. Plus, you know, this could give us the
- 3:07crossover we've all been waiting for for years, Star Trek in Looney Tones,
- 3:15I mean, bugs Bunny on the Bridge. I mean, that's what we're
- 3:19all thinking, right, I want Scooby Doo in lower decks. Oh,
- 3:23there you go, there you go. My first thought was actually a Game
- 3:28of Thrones and Star Trek. I'd love to see some dragons in space.
- 3:31There you go, There you go. I like that. Yeah, I
- 3:35like that. I'm actually right in the middle of Game of Thrones. I've
- 3:38never watched it before. I just started season four Game of Thrones, so
- 3:40I'm kind of a Game of Thrones nubie. But yeah, I'm really enjoying
- 3:46the series. So yeah, So it sounds like it's pretty early on.
- 3:50We don't know exactly what this will mean. It's just a lot of you
- 3:53know, just guessing at this point. But One of the things I had
- 3:59thought about as I was driving home, knowing we were going to talk about
- 4:01this is you know, Warner Brothers has been very much in a heavy let's
- 4:08cut everything we can trim the fat mode. Right. We had the Batgirl
- 4:14movie shelved famously. They were going to like it's done. I don't know
- 4:19if you know about that aster, but yeah, oh no, I know
- 4:21it's It's just it hurt a bit, right, Yeah. Yeah. And
- 4:28then there's the Wiley Coyote Versus Acme movie that currently is being shopped around,
- 4:33but that's only after public outcry for for this film. They were originally going
- 4:39to shelf it too, So yeah, that makes me wonder about Star Trek.
- 4:45Like, you know, we know that Discovery used to be profitable when
- 4:50they were selling it internationally to like Amazon and to Netflix for distribution, right,
- 4:57so by charging those streaming services international, that's how it was profitable.
- 5:01But then when Paramount Plus went international, it wasn't as much because now they
- 5:06were on streaming revenue, and we don't know what those numbers are. How
- 5:11much of a draw Discovery has been for their own streaming revenue or or any
- 5:17of the other Star Trek shows, right, because now it's all in house.
- 5:21So can we be seeing a reduction in Star Trek shows if this merger
- 5:28happens, just because of how tightly Warner brother It keeps the purse strings.
- 5:33I was worried about that too, especially with Prodigy just getting cut and moving
- 5:36to Netflix. That was my story when reading about this. I'd hope that
- 5:42theoretically it would allow for both companies to have a bigger budget, especially if
- 5:46they can become a competitive streaming platform. Yeah. I mean ideally that's the
- 5:50hope, right. I mean, I guess Discovery doesn't really have to worry
- 5:54about it because it's their final season, so they're good either way, right,
- 5:58So yeah, yeah, but like long term in a Stranger Worlds,
- 6:01could that be reduced? Could lower decks? I mean lower decks is already
- 6:05what four or five years in so they could be saying, hey, time
- 6:09for that to go. You know, we we've got the what section thirty
- 6:14one movie that's supposed to be starting to shoot next month, So yeah,
- 6:19it'll help boils down to the to the dollars. I mean obviously, you
- 6:24know, we want these companies to make money because if when they make money,
- 6:28they make the content. We like, we've talked about that before.
- 6:32Now, okay, what are some of the big players? You mentioned Game
- 6:35of Thrones? Now, forgive my ignorance, is h can we talk about
- 6:41what companies are associated with what other companies are well all the other little dolls
- 6:45in that nesting doll, right, exactly exactly. So when we're talking about
- 6:48Warner Brothers, what big not necessarily franchises, but what big companies were talking
- 6:54about? We talked Warner Brothers. Yeah, Game of the owns what is
- 7:00that the I think they just own HBO something. Yeah, they own HBO
- 7:05anything on HBO. Okay, okay, that's kind of big. The Last
- 7:11of Us Show franchise, Yeah, okay, franchise. I think I've heard
- 7:15of that one too. Looney Tunes man, there's a few others. I
- 7:23think they owned Hanna Barbara. I think they bought them out a long time
- 7:26ago. Okay, well, okay, so I'm thinking you remember that Paramount
- 7:30commercial where they were climbing the top of the mountain and it was like Door
- 7:32the Explorer and Captain and the guys from n C I S and all that
- 7:35kind of just imagine who's going to be on that mountain? Now there's gonna
- 7:41be dragons flying around and you know the Marvin, the marsh control, Yeah,
- 7:46right, all of it. So yeah, I mean it's it's gonna
- 7:50be a lot of properties all under one umbrella. So I guess we'll see
- 7:55what happens to us long term with this. Yeah, I don't know,
- 8:01man, it's kind of hard to say definitively at this point, but it's
- 8:05definitely something we'll keep tracking. Yeah, and let you guys know as it
- 8:11moves along. Ask her anything else you want to bring up about the merger
- 8:15or any other predictions you have for it. Part of me wonders how the
- 8:20merger will affect the filming process and if we could see a turnover in creatives
- 8:24on movies like the Section thirty one movie or the new Starfleet Academy show that
- 8:28I don't know if it's confirmed yet, but they'll be talking about it.
- 8:31Well, they had confirmed it that they were going to make it, and
- 8:33they have a writer's room for it. Even what's her name? She plays
- 8:39Mariner's Tony Tony knew some Yeah, Tony, Yeah, I remember that.
- 8:45Yeah. Yeah, So I wonder if we would see, you know,
- 8:46overturning creatives with that with Warner Brothers having their sort of money in the game.
- 8:52Now, yeah, it's curious to see how that plays out, like
- 8:56if their showrunners are going to you know, be involved in the process that
- 9:00our showrunners are already in by ours. I'm talking about Star Trek obviously,
- 9:03but yeah, also, how is this gonna affect you know, I pay
- 9:07a certain amount per month for pair amount plus, but I also have HBO
- 9:13or racks, so you know, are they going to come up with some
- 9:16sort of tiered system or some sort of you know, bundle package whatever.
- 9:22Yeah, I mean it's very early on for those discussions, but probably you
- 9:28know, I'm also wondering now Star Trek legacy has been hanging out there right,
- 9:33people have been talking about that whether or not that's going to actually happen.
- 9:39I've kind of had this realization recently that I kind of think it is
- 9:43going to happen, just because Terry Metallis is not yet officially signed on to
- 9:48anything else that we know of, and that guy did such a great job
- 9:52with The Cards season three, you would think that, you know, somebody
- 9:58would have scooped him up by now if he wasn't already committed to Star trek
- 10:01in some way, right, and hopefully everybody knows he did a good job.
- 10:03Everybody important knows, like the exacts, right, Paramount and the execs
- 10:09that Warner Brothers. You know, if that merger happens, yeah, hopefully
- 10:15hopefully so it can go one up two ways. When you have a merger
- 10:18like that come in, you know, you have these two companies come together,
- 10:22and you've got a project that's sort of hanging in the balance. It
- 10:26can get a the project can get a shove. Now the question is does
- 10:30it get shoved off a cliff or does it get shoved into production? Well,
- 10:35to give you an idea, like now that I'm thinking about it,
- 10:37to give you an idea how quick things can get shoved. Right. When
- 10:41when Discovery bought Warner Brothers, they were about two to three weeks away from
- 10:46doing a Wonder Twins film, right, They had announced this and they even
- 10:52have cast it. They announced who the caster was going to be, so
- 10:54they were they like script was ready, they were going to go, right,
- 10:58and then as soon as Discovery bottom, they immediately canceled that film.
- 11:01Instead, We're not doing this thing, you know, so who knows what
- 11:07that could mean for you know, Section thirty one or Star Trek Academy.
- 11:11The other thing to consider is Discovery is has made their money with unscripted shows,
- 11:18right, reality shows. That's that's their bread and butter, Right,
- 11:20So could we see some sort of reality shows Star Trek not necessarily like following
- 11:26people around or whatever, but maybe like I don't know, like a game
- 11:28show like that the Game show. Yeah, so along those lines you know
- 11:37here for that one. Yeah, I pictured like a sort of sci fi
- 11:43nature show where someone walks through all the planets and Star Trek there you go.
- 11:48Yeah, I would love that for some sort of like Unexplained universe kind
- 11:54of show like you see on History Channel, but with like maybe Star Trek
- 11:56actors you know, which you see on the hist reachannal and I think about
- 12:01it, you know, yeah, yeah, yeah, I would love to
- 12:05see Jonathan Frakes, you know, walk around with the camera again like he
- 12:09did thirty years ago, and go backstage and talk about some of the behind
- 12:13the scenes stuff. Yeah, that would be neat. That'd be really neat.
- 12:16But yeah, yeah, that's basically where we're at right now. Guys.
- 12:22With this, it's all kind of you know, speculative at this point,
- 12:26but as tell us a little bit about Star Trek Daily News or daily
- 12:31Start Trek News. Sorry, yeah, well we're we are part of the
- 12:35Roddenberry podcast network. It's in the name we make. We released Star Trek
- 12:39News daily except for weekends because we need a break sometimes, right, Yeah,
- 12:45and that's we We tried to cover everything from toy releases to video games
- 12:50to any book comic. Uh. Someone who works with us, Alex,
- 12:52has like a massive spreadsheet of the release date of like every comic for the
- 12:56next I don't even know how many years. Oh right on, Yeah,
- 13:01it's it's very cool. Yeah, this is the website. I'm showing it
- 13:05off right now. Yeah, and I recently did a guest post on there,
- 13:11so we'll definitely check it out. Yeah. I get to do whatever
- 13:16I want. I do the meme reviews every Monday. Nice. I see
- 13:22Star Trek games all over like my Instagram and my Twitter, and I'm like,
- 13:24I just was always saving them to my phone, and I reached out
- 13:28to t Rick, who is the managing editor, and I was like,
- 13:31I have the best idea ever. So I started doing it. It's been
- 13:33super fun and sounds so much fun. Yeah, I love it. How
- 13:37long have you been with them? I actually just started this summer I met
- 13:41t Rick. I so I work in theater, backstage work, and t
- 13:46Rick is a stage manager and we were both working on the same show this
- 13:48summer and I met him, and I think, I believe, if I
- 13:52remember correctly, I was. Someone asked me if I like Star Trek or
- 13:54Star Wars better, And this is my least favorite question. Okay, so
- 13:58I got on my soapbox every time, and I'm like, they're incomparable pieces
- 14:03of media. It's it's it's my whole thing. I'm wearing my my Star
- 14:11Wars jacket and my Star Trek shirt, right, Yeah, I love them
- 14:16both, and I it's my biggest pet peeve when people asked me to compare
- 14:20them, and I believe I was ranting about how they're incomparable, and t
- 14:22Rick saw me and was like, came up to me. He was like,
- 14:24do you know how to write? I guess I do. And then
- 14:28I started writing for Daily Star Trek News, your news pretty much anywhere.
- 14:35I have a we have a discord, and I have a bot set up
- 14:39that basically goes through you know, the Google news feed, uh, and
- 14:43it'll go and pull basically anything that says Star Trek in it, so it'll
- 14:46just send us it the minute it comes out. And other than that,
- 14:50because we're part of the Roddenberry podcast network, we will get sent like press
- 14:54releases of like news. So we got like the announcement for Prodigy before it
- 15:00was announced to the public. About that, yeah, yeah, so there's
- 15:05things like that and that. That's pretty much how we get our news or
- 15:09just through through the grapevine, right right, yeah? Yeah. Do you
- 15:15attend conventions or uh, we have some some people in our staff do.
- 15:22I personally do not. I'm I'm a college student. I don't get that
- 15:26kind of time, right, fair enough, Yeah, fair enough? Okay,
- 15:33it's got anything else you want to ask? No, I think I'm
- 15:37good. I'm definitely gonna go check out your website and I encourage everybody to
