- 0:00Hey y'all, it's friendly. Welcome back to In the
- 0:03Stillness. Happy Wednesday.
- 0:05So thankful that y'all are joining me today.
- 0:08We are going to be finishing up First John chapter 3, which has
- 0:12honestly been so refining. I've loved sitting in this
- 0:16chapter together, really just letting it shape how we view our
- 0:20relationship with the Lord. And before I go into everything
- 0:24for the podcast today, little life update that I will be
- 0:27traveling the rest of this week, so recording will be a little
- 0:31bit more tricky. But when I'm back, we'll be
- 0:34jumping right into chapter 4, which I'm super pumped for.
- 0:38So today, as we're closing out chapter 3, these two verses
- 0:43really tie everything together, belief, love, obedience, and
- 0:49what it truly looks like to live in union with Christ.
- 0:54So let's go ahead and read them. We'll be in first John chapter
- 0:573, verses 23 to 24. So these are His commands that
- 1:04we continually place our trust in the name of His Son Jesus
- 1:09Christ, and that we keep loving one another just as He has
- 1:13commanded us. For all who obey His commands
- 1:17find their lives joined in union with Him, and He lives and
- 1:22flourishes in them. We know and have proof that He
- 1:27constantly lives and flourishes in us by the Spirit that He has
- 1:31given us. OK, right away this lays it out
- 1:37so simply, but still so deeply. We are to believe in Jesus
- 1:43Christ and to love one another. That's the command.
- 1:48And I think sometimes we can overcomplicate what God is
- 1:52asking of us, but here He brings it back to this foundation.
- 1:57But I want us to notice how it says to trust in the name of
- 2:01Jesus Christ, because in the Bible, a name represents
- 2:06character, who the person really is.
- 2:09So this is not just about believing that Jesus existed.
- 2:15It's trusting in who He is, in His authority, in His nature, in
- 2:21His power on heaven and on earth.
- 2:24Philippians 2, verses 9 to 11 tell us that His name is above
- 2:30every name. So when we place our trust in
- 2:34His name, we're placing our trust in His identity that He is
- 2:38fully God and fully man. He is the Savior of the world
- 2:43and He is fully Lord. So I just want to ask you guys,
- 2:47do you just know about Jesus or do you actually trust in who He
- 2:53is, who He claims to be as the Son of God?
- 2:58And real belief, it always produces something.
- 3:04It's not passive. James too tells us that faith
- 3:08without works is dead. So if we really do believe in
- 3:12Jesus, it will show up in how we live.
- 3:17Belief precedes becoming As we follow him, we begin to look
- 3:24like Him. And it's as we live like Jesus,
- 3:28we begin to love like Jesus as he says in John 13 verse 35,
- 3:34that by this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you
- 3:39love one another. So love is the evidence.
- 3:43Our faith expresses itself through love, as it says in
- 3:47Scripture. And this is where the word
- 3:50abiding comes in because living in Him, He also lives in us.
- 3:57In John chapter 15, Jesus says that He is the vine and we are
- 4:02the branches. Y'all apart from Jesus we are
- 4:08useless. We can do nothing, nothing that
- 4:11is beneficial for the Kingdom, but when we remain in Him we
- 4:16bear much fruit. It is a mutual ongoing
- 4:20relationship. So it's not distant, it's not
- 4:24occasional, it's not just a check in, it's constant,
- 4:28continuous. And Scripture shows us what that
- 4:33looks like in real life. It looks like believing in Jesus
- 4:37Christ, loving the family of God, our brothers and sisters in
- 4:42the faith, and pursuing and living in righteousness.
- 4:48So ask yourself, is my life marked by these things?
- 4:53No, it's not going to be perfect, but it should be
- 4:56consistent. And this is also so crucial.
- 5:03Our conduct confirms Christ in US practically.
- 5:09It's not just spiritually, it's not just what we say we believe,
- 5:14it's how we live that reveals what's really rooted within us.
- 5:20Jesus said in Matthew 7, verse 16, You will recognize them by
- 5:25their fruit. Therefore, our lives should bear
- 5:30evidence and proof that He is living in US.
- 5:34Verse 24 ties it directly to obedience.
- 5:38Those who obey, they live in union with Him.
- 5:44So obedience is ongoing and it's daily.
- 5:48It's choosing Him again and again.
- 5:52And I read this in yesterday's podcast, but I really love this
- 5:56verse. Ecclesiastes 2, verse 26.
- 6:01To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge, and
- 6:05happiness. So there is good fruit that
- 6:09comes from a life that is fully aligned with the Lord.
- 6:14And the part that I love so much from these verses says he lives
- 6:18and flourishes in them. The word flourishes if we break
- 6:24that apart. That means to grow, to thrive,
- 6:29to increase and abound. So God's presence in you is not
- 6:34stagnant. If He is truly in you, there
- 6:38will be growth. It may be slow, it may be unseen
- 6:43at times, but it's real and authentic.
- 6:46Second Corinthians 3 verse 18 says we are being transformed
- 6:51from glory to glory. So this is a process.
- 6:56It's not passive, it's active, and it leads us to this posture.
- 7:02John 3 verse 30 says he must increase, but I must decrease.
- 7:08So we are to pray for less of ourselves, less of our human
- 7:14nature, and more of Jesus within us.
- 7:17That is the evidence of a life that is abiding in Christ when
- 7:22He is constantly increasing in US.
- 7:26And finally, at the end, how do we know that He lives in US?
- 7:32It says it's by His Spirit, because His Spirit is our seal.
- 7:39Romans 8 verse 16 says that the Spirit testifies with our Spirit
- 7:45that we are God's children. So it is not based on feeling,
- 7:50it's not based on performance, but by His Spirit in us which
- 7:56guides, convicts, leads, and also assures us.
- 8:03It's by that same Spirit that we belong to Him.
- 8:08So as we close out this chapter, I believe it really comes down
- 8:13to these things. Believe in Jesus, love like
- 8:19Jesus, obey Jesus, abide in Jesus, and trust that as you do,
- 8:28as you make him Lord of your life, he is actively living and
- 8:35blossoming within you. So let's move into prayer now.
- 8:41Dear God, thank you for the gift of your Son and for the truth of
- 8:49Your word. I pray that we would not just
- 8:53believe in name, but to truly trust in who you are, Your
- 8:59character. Jesus, would you teach us to
- 9:02love like you as we abide in you and you and us, to walk in
- 9:08obedience in step with Your Spirit, to remain in you every
- 9:13single day of our lives. I pray that we would reflect you
- 9:20in all we do and show others that you are in us, that you are
- 9:26growing and increasing in US. I pray over every single person
- 9:31listening right now that they would encounter you in new,
- 9:36fresh ways and have a desire to go deeper in their walk with
- 9:40you. God, we pray for a greater
- 9:43hunger and thirst for righteousness and Your Son's
- 9:47holy name. We pray.
- 9:49Amen. OK y'all.
- 9:51Well that is today's episode that is wrapping up chapter 3 of
- 9:56First John. I hope that y'all have gotten
- 9:58some amazing takeaways as I have studying this chapter and I'm
- 10:03super excited to be back with y'all after my trip.
- 10:06Praying over you guys and hope you have a wonderful rest of
- 10:09your week. I'll see y'all on the next
- 10:11episode.
