Transcript
- 0:00I only have two,
- 0:01and I know that a lot of homeschool families are much bigger than that.
- 0:05Welcome back to Making Everyday Magic. My name is Shanna.
- 0:08If you are new here, my own home schooling family of four.
- 0:10We are in our 10th year of homeschooling.
- 0:11I have a ninth grader and a fifth grader, and today I want to talk with you
- 0:14about homeschooling, multiple grades, and multiple
- 0:18kids.
- 0:23Before we go any further, please scroll down and hit the big red subscribe button.
- 0:26Turn on the bell for notifications and give this video a thumbs up.
- 0:28As always, you can find me right on down in the comments or over an Instagram
- 0:31at Making Everyday Magic.
- 0:34Today I want to talk about homeschooling, multiple kids
- 0:38and multiple grades, so I do have many videos on this channel.
- 0:42Again, we have homeschooled for ten years and you guys have been along
- 0:47on this channel since, I think the start of homeschooling my second child.
- 0:52Now, I know a lot of homeschool families are much bigger than two,
- 0:56but the way that we keep our heads above water
- 0:59while making sure that everybody gets everything done, everybody gets everything
- 1:03that they need, is what we are going to talk about today.
- 1:07So I have spoken recently about
- 1:11some of the things that we combine and why we combine them.
- 1:14But this video, I hope, is a little bit more of an in-depth look on our
- 1:20multiple grades and multiple ages levels.
- 1:24Children homeschool.
- 1:26So many of you know that something that I am very proud of
- 1:30and something that I love to do and I search out is combining where possible.
- 1:35Now, I know that this is something that will save me time and time and time again.
- 1:39Now my kids are very, very far apart.
- 1:42My kids are four grade levels apart.
- 1:45By the time that my youngest came to the table, she chose at four years old.
- 1:51My older daughter was in, going into third grade, I think.
- 1:55So they're they're not close.
- 1:58They are not close in age and they are not in grade level,
- 2:00and therefore they are not close in a lot of skill sets.
- 2:03And that is okay. That is to be expected.
- 2:06And so what we do is that we
- 2:09isolate those things that should stay
- 2:12uniquely solo on grade level.
- 2:16And if you don't know what those things are, those things are math.
- 2:22Of course, they're not doing the same math language arts.
- 2:25Of course they are not doing the same language arts.
- 2:26I will give you a little funny anecdote on that actually, in a minute.
- 2:29But math and language arts are very
- 2:34specifically grade level, and so is there a critical thinking
- 2:37because their brains just don't think the same.
- 2:40And I think that's okay.
- 2:41There are many times where I work very hard to find things that we can combine,
- 2:48and those things are history, especially any kind of art study
- 2:53and science, those things and a lot of kind of,
- 2:59like extra
- 2:59bonus studies, which for us this year is French
- 3:02because everybody could be learning French last year, black American history.
- 3:08It has been art history.
- 3:09It has been hi, Gatsby.
- 3:12I'll put it on the screen
- 3:12because everybody always asks, is that how have I got a story for you?
- 3:16Which was an art history lesson?
- 3:19Again, history is a big one and science is a big one.
- 3:21And that is because one, all of those things tend
- 3:25to not have a lot of output.
- 3:28And all of those things are things that I first of all,
- 3:33I think I outsource everything as far as getting a curriculum from somewhere.
- 3:36But like science can be a really big deal when you're doing experiments and things
- 3:40like that.
- 3:40It's kind of a lot of work to put it together.
- 3:43And history even is a lot of lesson, right?
- 3:46So a lot of information and videos and timelines and maps
- 3:50and we've done geography together, things like that.
- 3:53So those are things that I feel like are very easy to combine.
- 3:58And that is
- 3:58because it is a lot of work to set them up, and it's usually a lot more fun.
- 4:02Like science.
- 4:03Science lessons are a lot more fun when you do them in a group.
- 4:06They just are.
- 4:07So I think those are things that are just really
- 4:10naturally lend themselves to combining.
- 4:13However, it is important to me that I understand
- 4:17how I can have expectation for output from my students.
- 4:22So for example,
- 4:26I we will be doing history.
- 4:28Well, we are doing history this year with Pneumatic Professor,
- 4:30and I will have a deep dive on that coming up soon because it's kind of great.
- 4:34So we're doing Nomadic Professor history.
- 4:36It is world history like one and two.
- 4:39It's a two part thing.
- 4:41And they
- 4:42I think they kind of think of themselves as like honors history,
- 4:45which I can totally see.
- 4:46And the way that we're combining that is everybody watches.
- 4:50And what we do is we play the audio version while we're reading.
- 4:54So it's like hearing and reading along.
- 4:57And then,
- 4:59we, you know,
- 5:00there's notes and timelines and maps and little quizzes and things like that.
- 5:04But in the program there will be a
- 5:08it gives you like extra credit, which of course,
- 5:09my fifth grader isn't working for credit, so don't even worry about that.
- 5:12But it gives you a project, a big project to do, which is curating a museum.
- 5:17And so I already know that that museum is going to be set up differently.
- 5:20That museum is going to be very different based on my children
- 5:24at their developmental level.
- 5:25Who is putting it together, what it will look like, what is included
- 5:28is going to be based on their interest.
- 5:30I know that I know that very much.
- 5:32Last year when we did things like Black American history.
- 5:35It was through Crash Course and I found some Teachers
- 5:38Pay Teachers worksheets for my oldest child.
- 5:40It was open ended. Fill in the blank full sentence.
- 5:43For my younger child, it was word.
- 5:45Bank matched the word in a sentence because again, developmentally.
- 5:48But it is really important to me.
- 5:50They say on grade level for
- 5:53math and language arts.
- 5:54And it's so funny when we do language arts, you guys know we use
- 5:58Michael Thompson.
- 5:58And so it sinks that when we're doing the grammar portion of that lesson
- 6:03every year, it sinks up where we're reading like nouns with one
- 6:06noun to the other, verbs with one versus the other.
- 6:08And so it's so funny because you can really tell.
- 6:11And my husband did this actually on Labor Day.
- 6:13He was teaching this dad's school.
- 6:14And even he said, it's really interesting how you can tell where it's like,
- 6:18you know, the fifth grader.
- 6:19It's a lot more kind of like topsoil.
- 6:21And the ninth grader, I mean, we are like digging into the study.
- 6:26And so it's the same kind of thing.
- 6:28It's just, you know, we're a little bit
- 6:29lighter up here with the younger one and definitely deeper with the older one.
- 6:34Now, why do I do this?
- 6:36I do this because guys, we spend half of every single day
- 6:40doing school, doing school work, and that is
- 6:45with our things that are combined and are things that are individual.
- 6:49And every day I have something to do and I have involvement
- 6:53in every day they have involvement.
- 6:54And if we didn't combine things,
- 6:58especially since we do outsource so much as far as like,
- 7:02you know, online math and digital online kind of history,
- 7:07if we didn't, if we didn't do that, it would be all day, every day.
- 7:13And so each child would likely still only have half a days of work.
- 7:17But between reading every little thing and saying every little thing
- 7:21like, I can't imagine tackling history at this level
- 7:26with this volume
- 7:28for two kids, it'd be so it would be so much.
- 7:31Same thing with science lessons.
- 7:34I think it's really important to note that that my philosophy is always
- 7:37we teach to the older child and we pull the other one up.
- 7:42So we are doing, you know, biology 101.
- 7:46And my younger one, who is very interested in animals, is struggling
- 7:49right along and super happy. So.
- 7:53My again, my kids are far apart.
- 7:55If you have six kids and you've got two that are closer and two that are closer
- 7:59and two that are closer, then yeah, maybe you're doing three different things
- 8:03with them.
- 8:04Maybe you're doing three different levels throughout the day, but
- 8:08if you can combine, it will make your lives a lot easier.
- 8:12Another very, very, very important aspect of homeschooling multiple kids
- 8:17at multiple grade levels
- 8:19is your expectation of consistency.
- 8:22And you guys know it always comes back to consistency with me.
- 8:24But my children know if I am reading
- 8:2930 minutes of verbs and verbs sections with big Sister.
- 8:33Little sister knows that her expectation is
- 8:35that she's working on the things she can work on on her own.
- 8:37So we've already done a math lesson. She can fill out her math sheet.
- 8:39She can start working those problems.
- 8:41We've already done a lesson.
- 8:42She can move on to her page of day geography.
- 8:45It is important that you set yourself up for success,
- 8:49both in parenting and in homeschooling, especially if you have multiple children,
- 8:53to help them learn to work independently.
- 8:57And I know that this is a big pain point in the homeschool world.
- 9:00Children being able to work in.
- 9:02Children being able to stay on task, children being able
- 9:05to get anything done without you hovering and hand-holding.
- 9:09And this is something that I have put into them very, very young.
- 9:12So if you're just starting out, start now.
- 9:14Start loud, start proud
- 9:15because you're going to build into it and it's going to serve you so well later.
- 9:18We haven't had to address this guys in years because again,
- 9:22there's a big gap in my kids.
- 9:24My fourth grader was my fault.
- 9:26My four year old at the time was so ready to come to the table.
- 9:29She wanted her own stuff to work on because she saw that we were working.
- 9:34We were doing things.
- 9:35We were learning things.
- 9:36It was fun, it was entertaining, it was engaging.
- 9:39And so she wanted to come along.
- 9:41And that started early.
- 9:42Guys that started with letting her color letters.
- 9:44While Big Sister and I were working on phonics.
- 9:46That started with letting her sit in on any amount of video lesson
- 9:51that we had that started with her just listening to his request in the car.
- 9:55Okay, so she has been exposed to so much,
- 9:59so many things over the years simply by existing
- 10:03and being part of the team and being drug along.
- 10:06So I do want to let you know it's possible.
- 10:09I do want to let you know.
- 10:10Just start early and stay consistent.
- 10:13It is so hard.
- 10:14And of course, please teach everybody the math they need to know.
- 10:17Teach everybody the language arts. They need to know.
- 10:19I am not saying to cut corners.
- 10:21What I am saying is to combine where you can combine,
- 10:26where it makes sense,
- 10:27combine where everybody is still going to get the best possible
- 10:30educational model that they can.
- 10:32I know that my fifth grader is not going to put out a high school
- 10:36honors level history assignment.
- 10:38I am okay with that.
- 10:39Okay, so adjust your expectations, but keep your expectations consistent.
- 10:45It is not ever going to get any easier.
- 10:48So you might as well go through the the work and the pain
- 10:51of setting up both your parenting, your home and your homeschool.
- 10:54All, all of it is going to have to work hand in hand.
- 10:57If you are doing anything with multiple children, okay,
- 11:00you're going to need the consistency.
- 11:01You're going to need a bit of that rigidity
- 11:03to make sure that you're getting things done. Okay.
- 11:06And if you can go in with a plan, please,
- 11:09please combine some things where possible.
- 11:12Not each child needs to have their own science program
- 11:15as specially if they're a year or two apart.
- 11:18You are doing yourself a disservice,
- 11:19and I know there's going to be a lot of people who get really mad at me
- 11:22and tell me otherwise, but those are the same people
- 11:25who are asking me how we get so much done, how my home functions the way it does.
- 11:29So you can either think I'm crazy, okay, and stay in naysayer, and that's fine.
- 11:35But I can tell you that we spend half a day on our academics.
- 11:39My kids get stuff done.
- 11:40They are motivated on their own.
- 11:42They still got stuff done the first week of school
- 11:44when I had a dentist appointment.
- 11:45They know what they need to do and they get it done
- 11:47and a lot of the group things.
- 11:48So history and science, they will start these things up on their own.
- 11:52And there is a wonderful accountability that comes.
- 11:54So when everybody is doing science at the same time, it is good
- 11:58and it is done and it is holding everybody accountable.
- 12:01Everybody else has to chip in to make this thing done.
- 12:04And it is boom, boom, 30 minutes
- 12:06and we're in and we're out on science and it is great and it is all done.
- 12:10So I have to tell you, I'm not saying I'm an expert, I'm just telling you
- 12:14what works for us.
- 12:15And these methods work for us.
- 12:18So it is possible to homeschool many grades.
- 12:20It is possible to homeschool many kids and it is maybe one of those things.
- 12:24Maybe you do have like a really, really big spread.
- 12:26Let's say you've got a first grader and ninth grader.
- 12:29Have the first grader study with the ninth grader studying.
- 12:31Listen to me.
- 12:33The ninth grader is studying biology.
- 12:34The first grader can learn about animals.
- 12:36The first grader can learn about cells.
- 12:38The first grader can color a printout of an animal cell.
- 12:42While the ninth grader is learning about animal cells.
- 12:45The first grader can understand taxonomy.
- 12:47And maybe do like a matching for what comes first and next.
- 12:50Well, the ninth grader is doing it from memory.
- 12:52You can incorporate your kids, you can combine them.
- 12:54They will love it.
- 12:55They really will.
- 12:57Okay.
- 12:57Group learning in a home is so wonderful.
- 13:00It really makes me think that this is what homeschool is all about.
- 13:03When we're all sitting together, when we're all learning, when we're all
- 13:07increasing our knowledge together in a way
- 13:09that is enjoyable, that we can make, I think is really nice.
- 13:14Because what I don't want, at least not for my homeschool,
- 13:16is everybody going their separate ways, doing their own things.
- 13:18That doesn't sound fun for anybody at all.
- 13:20So the more we can combine, the more we can enjoy doing together.
- 13:24I know that it's going to serve them really well
- 13:26and set them up for a better success, because it is so possible.
- 13:29It is so possible to homeschool multiple grade levels and multiple kids.
- 13:32And again, I'm just you know, these are my caveats and my kids are old.
- 13:38Okay. So my youngest is a fifth grader.
- 13:39So she is like well in to understanding how this works.
- 13:42My youngest has been homeschooled for.
- 13:49Eight
- 13:49years, seven years, seven years, seven years
- 13:52probably, let's say pre-K for kinder, first, second, third, fourth.
- 13:56Okay. Seven years.
- 13:57This is my youngest seventh year of homeschooling.
- 13:59Okay. So she knows how the game works.
- 14:02She knows how it goes.
- 14:03My ninth grader, my kids are old now, so I do not have young kids.
- 14:07And again I only have two.
- 14:10But you can apply this to 50.
- 14:13You can apply this to one.
- 14:15Consistency is always going to serve you best.
- 14:17Combine where possible
- 14:18and just remember that there are only a few things that truly need to be
- 14:22taught on individual grade level.
- 14:23Make sure that what you're pouring into them is a lot,
- 14:26but what you expect from them is reasonable
- 14:28for their developmental stage age, grade level.
- 14:32Okay, because that I think is really, really easy to do.
- 14:35Your first grader can color and label, okay, your ninth grader can maybe do it
- 14:39a section. It's just different. Okay, okay.
- 14:42Well guys, I hope you found any of this helpful, entertaining or informative.
- 14:45If you did,
- 14:46please scroll down, hit that big red subscribe button,
- 14:48turn on the bell for notifications and give this video a thumbs up.
- 14:50As always, you can find me down in the comments
- 14:52or over on Instagram at Making Every Day Magic.
- 14:54I am really excited to hear guys, what do you want to hear coming up soon?
- 14:59What is it that you want to see?
- 15:01I'm doing deep dives on a few things.
- 15:03I think I'm going to circle back to our planners.
- 15:05I've had so many more questions on that and like my kids
- 15:06suggested a thing that they then implemented.
- 15:08So I have to show it to you.
- 15:10There is so much going on.
- 15:11This year has started out really, really awesome.
- 15:14Oh my gosh. We're almost are we?
- 15:17We're almost a month in. Who knew?
- 15:20And we're having a great time.
- 15:21We are having a truly great time.
- 15:23It's going really well.
- 15:24Everybody just got right back into that groove on week one, which was so great
- 15:27because I was so nervous about starting late.
- 15:28But I'm going to show back up with,
- 15:31Nomadic professor for sure.
- 15:33Is getting a deep dive really soon.
- 15:35And then I think homeschool planners is coming back around deep dive really soon.
- 15:39So let me know what else you want to see, okay?
- 15:41Because we've got a lot.
- 15:42We've always got things we can talk about, and I am super happy to share
- 15:45what is working for us or what is that working for us.
- 15:47Just to save you a little bit of time and grief and to hopefully spare
- 15:51you trying to try it yourself, if maybe it won't be a good fit.
- 15:54Guys, I think that's it. Together.
- 15:56Let's keep making everyday magic.
