- 0:00Hi Miller Condon, welcome back Iowa Sports Radio Network
- 0:03flagship on Des Moines sports station one O 6.3 KX&O bottom of
- 0:07the hour Bill Bender on college football Well, game 3 putting
- 0:11the classic back in the fall classic.
- 0:14What a game that was last night. Matt Snyder was there at Dodger
- 0:17Stadium watching all 18 innings and he joins us from LA Matt
- 0:22Trenton, Ken, thanks for coming on.
- 0:24How are you and what time did you file your game story?
- 0:27What time did you finally hit send and get out of Dodger
- 0:30Stadium last night? So The thing is I had been
- 0:33building it like throughout the game.
- 0:36So basically like right when it ended, all I had to do was just
- 0:39kind of add in the parts about the frame and walk off home run.
- 0:42So probably only 15 minutes after it ended, which I mean,
- 0:46what was it? 3:00 AM Eastern Time, so 2:00 AM
- 0:49you guys time. So around then.
- 0:52Unbelievable. So much of there was, I mean
- 0:55every single inning seemingly had something that we're talking
- 0:58about from the second inning. I thought Guerrero might have
- 1:01played made as good a defensive play as I've seen.
- 1:04It was that 6th inning I think when he got to to Oscar
- 1:08Hernandez. Few innings later, Tommy Edmond
- 1:11says hold my beer as he guns down kind of Faleppa at third
- 1:14base, guys getting thrown out at home.
- 1:16It was just one of these baseball games that you'll never
- 1:18forget, Matt. Absolutely.
- 1:21And it's funny that you mentioned that, but because when
- 1:25it was, yeah, I'll let you behind the curtain a little bit.
- 1:28When it was like the 7th or 8th inning, when I talked to my
- 1:31editors about what I might write, I said, you know what I'm
- 1:33going to do, It doesn't matter who wins.
- 1:35I'm just going to write about how amazing of a game this has
- 1:37been. And you know, that was again,
- 1:39when it was only the 7th or 8th inning or so.
- 1:41And my editor said, you know what, something cool has
- 1:45happened every single inning, whether it was something good or
- 1:48whether it was like Beau Bouchet getting picked off first because
- 1:51he thought Dalton Varsha walked. Like there was something quirky
- 1:55in every single inning. And I think even to the end,
- 1:59even though they nobody scored for like, I think 3 hours in
- 2:02real time, there was traffic in extra innings.
- 2:06There were guys on base every single inning.
- 2:08So yeah, it was it was intense. It was exciting.
- 2:14I do think the extra innings dragged a little bit and
- 2:17probably lost a lot of viewers in the process once you get up
- 2:20into the wee hours of the morning.
- 2:22And but I, I will say this, I realized in like the 15th inning
- 2:27that I hadn't been up out of my seat since the 7th inning.
- 2:29And then I stood up and like my back was all tight, my leg.
- 2:33I was like, dude, what am I doing?
- 2:34I got to get up and walk around a little bit, but it was just
- 2:37that kind of game. You know, Ken speculated.
- 2:40We were talking about a little bit earlier for you media guys
- 2:43and for the people that are on print deadline, people getting
- 2:46quotes after the game. Did you have to take an Uber
- 2:49home? Was there actually, you know,
- 2:50something waited for you to take you back to the the hotel that
- 2:53they had for you? How was it late night and what
- 2:55time did you finally depart Dodger Stadium last night?
- 2:58I actually have found a way that if you walk and I don't mind
- 3:03walking, I'm still in pretty good shape for being 47.
- 3:06If you walk and get a little bit away from the ballpark, you can
- 3:09usually flag down a cab and that's what I did.
- 3:12So it's probably 1/2 hour or so after the game.
- 3:14And no, they do Jack the prices up like, you know, a couple of
- 3:18years ago. No, it was last year.
- 3:21I walked out and like the first guy I saw, I said, hey, headed
- 3:24downtown and he goes like $300. No, I'm not going to try to
- 3:29expense that. Yeah.
- 3:31So last night he, the first guy I saw once, I walked probably
- 3:34three or four blocks away from Dodger Stadium, I was like, hey,
- 3:37I'm, I'm going downtown. And he said 70 bucks.
- 3:39I'm like, OK, yeah, I'll take it.
- 3:41Yeah, that's just kind of what you have to do then.
- 3:43Is the nightmare the the getting in and getting and particularly
- 3:46getting out of Dodger Stadium? Is it as bad as everyone says?
- 3:50Yes, that, that's why I, I've, I've started to kind of defend
- 3:54the Dodgers fans over the year. You know what, the whole stigma
- 3:56on the leaving, arriving early, leaving when everybody's trying
- 4:01to leave at once, it is an absolute madhouse.
- 4:05It's ridiculous. I mean, it seats almost 60,000
- 4:07people and everybody drives and it's just a giant parking.
- 4:11You've seen the aerial shot. I was just in a parking lot all
- 4:13the way around. There's two exits, one behind
- 4:16home plate and one behind center field.
- 4:18It takes forever. I always joke about when I'm
- 4:21sitting there writing, I can look out over center field and
- 4:24it's just a sea of brake lights for an hour and a half, usually
- 4:27after the game. It'd be torture.
- 4:29But you get out of there and you're up and it's a little
- 4:32after 11:00 AM Pacific Time and they're going to play once again
- 4:36today. Ohtani got out on the steel a
- 4:41little bit later on. He was going to second base on a
- 4:42base knock and he came up a little bit gimpy afterwards.
- 4:45Of course he remained in the game as he got on base 9 times
- 4:48throughout the course of that one.
- 4:50Any concerns though health wise with Otani?
- 4:52I know he said afterwards that he just want to get home and get
- 4:56to bed, but any concerns about that part of it and just where
- 4:59he is physically? Yes, 100%.
- 5:02I look, this is the thing we have with Shohei Otani that we
- 5:06have never had with anybody else.
- 5:08I know people want to talk about Babe Ruth, but he didn't have
- 5:11much overlap between being a pitcher and being hitter.
- 5:13Otani was on base 9 times last night in a game that was way
- 5:17over six hours and now he's supposed to pitch.
- 5:21I, I just, I can't imagine that he's not compromised at least a
- 5:25little bit. But here's the thing, it's
- 5:27Shohei Otani. He is superhuman.
- 5:31He is the the greatest baseball player in terms of sheer talent
- 5:34that we've ever seen. I wouldn't be surprised if he
- 5:37goes out and deals tonight, but I do think that there's a
- 5:41possibility that he's tired and he gets knocked around a little
- 5:44bit. Any problem with Schneider
- 5:46taking out Mad Max when he did and who came and flew?
- 5:51Hardy comes in at that point. Any problem there?
- 5:55You know Tony did double. Yeah, I I just like, I
- 6:01understand you want to get the lefty on there and letting
- 6:05Shohei Otani see anybody 1/3 time, much less a 41 year old
- 6:09who he had already doubled and homered off of.
- 6:11I kind of feel like it wouldn't have been a double, it would
- 6:14have been a home run. So yeah, that was absolutely the
- 6:18right move. And that's one of the like, I
- 6:20don't love saying this, but that's one of those moves where
- 6:24I like the process over the results because I don't honestly
- 6:29care that Otani doubled home a guy and then ended up scoring to
- 6:32tie the game. Like, you had to make that move.
- 6:34You absolutely you could not let him see Scherzer 1/3.
- 6:37Time. And Scherzer didn't.
- 6:39I mean, he didn't even balk. I mean, not like the last time,
- 6:43yeah, right. I thought he was going to yell
- 6:45at. Him I did too, but he knew he
- 6:47was. Done.
- 6:47My vainest point. I don't know if they showed it
- 6:49on TV, but Schneider signaled for the bullpen like one step
- 6:54out of the dugout and and I just my, my thought was he's not
- 6:58going to get to the mound and, and let Scherzer try to talk him
- 7:00out of it. He's making the move no matter
- 7:02what. Probably the right thing to do
- 7:04because we know Scherzer, he is wired differently, good batter
- 7:07and different and it's certainly been good throughout the course
- 7:09of his career. So to tonight, and we mentioned
- 7:13Ohtani on the other side, is Shane Bieber.
- 7:16Hard to get a good read on him. What do you anticipate out of
- 7:19the Blue Jays for a starter and after the use of the bullpen,
- 7:23one way or the other, is he going to have to go deep into
- 7:25this one? Yeah, I think they're going to
- 7:27have to try. I think he's going to have to
- 7:29try to get maybe three times through the order.
- 7:33And that's a tall order with the Dodgers.
- 7:35But if you try to take Otani out of the equation, it's a little
- 7:40bit easier to navigate. And especially because Mookie
- 7:43Beth is not that scary right now and he's the guy behind Otani.
- 7:47So I think you just kind of automatically walk Otani every
- 7:50time and then hope that you can get Bieber through the order
- 7:52three times. I mean, look, this is it.
- 7:55Like this is the season. I, I be you, you can't fall down
- 7:5831 to the Dodgers, especially after last night where they had
- 8:02plenty of chances to win that game.
- 8:04So I, I think you're going to completely empty Bieber's tank.
- 8:08And then if you have to throw some relievers, you know, Louis
- 8:12Barlon pitches every single game.
- 8:14I assume he'll throw again. I bet you Bassett comes in.
- 8:17He only threw 8. Bassett threw 8 pitches.
- 8:21Bassett threw 8 pitches. He would have to be the guy, I
- 8:23think. And you know what, that's a
- 8:26great point. That's the one that you could
- 8:28piggyback Bieber with. If you you get worried about
- 8:32Bieber going to the line up a third time and it's been 4
- 8:34innings and it's and it's closed.
- 8:37Maybe you get Bastard a couple innings before you get to the to
- 8:40the Varlan and Hoffman. What can you tell us about
- 8:43George Springer and his availability for tonight?
- 8:47I don't know right now, I assume they're doing every treatment on
- 8:52demand, but a side injury like that, if it's an oblique, it's
- 8:59obliques. What, a month?
- 9:00Oh yeah, absolutely. So I, I would say just
- 9:06speculating, I'd be surprised if he was in the lineup tonight.
- 9:09I kind of feel like he might be done, but you never know.
- 9:13Maybe it was. I guess my biggest thought was
- 9:17you wouldn't take somebody out on a precautionary basis in a
- 9:21must win World Series game. And he started walking off right
- 9:25away and he's played hurt. He got hit in the kneecap and
- 9:28stayed in the game and he was hobbling around in in the last
- 9:32game of the ALCS and he still stayed in.
- 9:34But last night he, he started walking off right away and that
- 9:38that made me think, oh, oh, it's bad.
- 9:41And he's done for the series. Yeah, I, I, I'm with you.
- 9:44Did you have a problem with Schneider taking Barger out when
- 9:46he did? Yes, That's what was my concern.
- 9:50I agree. For the most part, I, I got
- 9:53everything. I understood it like I, I, I
- 9:55some people complained about Bichette coming out, but I was
- 9:57like, man, he can't run and they needed somebody to run at that
- 10:01point in the game. And, and Kirk, I know it's tough
- 10:03to take out your your catcher, especially as the hottest Kirk's
- 10:06been in the playoffs, by the way, he's been amazing in the
- 10:08playoffs, but like they needed somebody who could run at that
- 10:11point in time. But the the barger moved their
- 10:15lineup at the end of the game felt like it's only Vlad, maybe
- 10:19a little bit Dalton VAR show like a.
- 10:21Spring training lineup, Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 10:26And yet one swing could have changed it, and they never got
- 10:29that swing. Here's what it was France, Lucas
- 10:32Guerrero, Kinder, full Epipet and clean up Varsho Kirk while
- 10:35he was still in there. This one was 55 straw, Clemente
- 10:39and Jimenez. I mean that that line is not
- 10:41going to be the Dodgers. Here's another point that one of
- 10:45my colleagues brought up in our chat room last night.
- 10:49He said if they're going to continue to take out Bichette in
- 10:52the middle of the game, you can't bat him behind Vlad
- 10:54because you can't have as protection for Vlad Guerrero
- 10:59late in the game. You just can't.
- 11:00No, that makes. Sense I never thought of that.
- 11:03That's a. That's a really good point.
- 11:04Matt, can you take us into the crazy playback in the second
- 11:07inning with Bobichette getting picked off at first after just
- 11:10an absolutely awful call behind the plate?
- 11:12I mean, as you know, Ken's normally the one that complaints
- 11:15about home plate umpires. This one I think we can all
- 11:18complain about and then the confusion getting picked off
- 11:21there. It doesn't.
- 11:22I don't know. There's nothing that you can do
- 11:24and there's nothing that you can do until we get to the challenge
- 11:26system that'll be in place. But with that one, just a what a
- 11:29weird spot that was. What's interesting, So upon
- 11:34first glance I thought, OK, the Empire completely screwed them
- 11:37because it seemed like a delayed strike call.
- 11:40And because of the delayed strike called, the jet has the
- 11:42leg injury, he couldn't really fire and get back to first.
- 11:46But like, didn't Varsho kind of stop and look at home plate in
- 11:51the first second and then start going to 1st?
- 11:54Like somebody told him it was a walk.
- 11:56And I think that's what messed the shed up.
- 11:58It was bizarre. It would be a lot better with
- 12:02the challenge system because I think the second that he called
- 12:05a strike, Varsho probably would have tapped his head and we
- 12:08would have found out it was a ball.
- 12:09But it was tough, tough all around.
- 12:13Like Bichette, he can't really use his legs as much.
- 12:16He's strained off first base, started, moved.
- 12:20It was just a weird situation. Were you in the press, the Otani
- 12:24press conference pregame when he was asked about the We don't
- 12:27need You chat? Chad travel?
- 12:30You missed that one. That was pretty good up in
- 12:32Toronto game one when they're Roger center in unison.
- 12:36We don't need you. We don't need you.
- 12:37Yeah, they need you. Every team could use.
- 12:39Yeah. Probably would be winning.
- 12:41The world, Yeah, unbelievable. So must win tonight.
- 12:44If the Jays don't win tonight, it's over.
- 12:47My hunches and I'm sorry man. No, I'm with you, dude.
- 12:50I'm with you that that last night was it like to, to have
- 12:55that many chances to win the game, to have a chance to take a
- 12:5721 lead in Dodger Stadium. I I kind of feel like if the
- 13:01Blue Jays were going to win the World Series, that was one that
- 13:04they absolutely had to have. Yep, no doubt, I know.
- 13:06Yes, obviously I would say tonight's a must win.
- 13:09Vinnie Pasquotino, have you guys been following what he's been
- 13:12doing in this series of all the social media that he does, the
- 13:14Royals first baseman, he's been unbelievable.
- 13:17Are you what he's been doing for Major League base?
- 13:20Oh my God, he's he's funny and all his, you know, all the XS or
- 13:27whatever from the MLB account. He's been really, really good.
- 13:31No, he's good. I like.
- 13:31It when we when you kind of when they have current players and
- 13:35stuff in the postseason and you kind of find like, hey, he could
- 13:38be a A next generation broadcaster.
- 13:41Like I think that's how Adam Wainwright started.
- 13:43Like when he was still playing, they had him on a few broadcasts
- 13:46and everybody realized like, hey, he's really good, so yeah,
- 13:49that's cool. Wouldn't happen.
- 13:51Good stuff. Thanks for doing this, as
- 13:52always. I hope it gets back to Toronto
- 13:56for a Game 6 on Friday. Hopefully.
- 13:58Yeah, we'll see. Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com.
- 14:00Matt, thank you all. Right.
- 14:02Take care, yeah. Good to talk to you.
- 14:04Matt Snyder didn't have the heart to ask him about tomorrow.
- 14:06Join us about what to come on with us tomorrow and recap
- 14:10today's game in preview game five.
- 14:14I might reach out to him. You don't want to give baseball
- 14:18up. I don't Trent.
- 14:19This series has been like, OK, I'm a Blue Jays fan, yes, but if
- 14:23it would have been somebody else, I would have been digging
- 14:25this. This has been great theater.
- 14:26If it was Seattle and playing out the exact same way.
- 14:29Absolutely. The same way.
- 14:30It's been great theater. Game one was phenomenal, though
- 14:34the Grand Slam game. Game two, you had to know that
- 14:37the Dodgers were going to flex a little bit, but I think it's
- 14:41been a really good World Series. We're only three games into it
- 14:44feels like 4. Well, that's because it is far
- 14:46as innings go. You get many shots there.
- 14:48What's the point is it is the money line?
- 14:50Is it crazy? Dodge your favorite.
- 14:52No, not crazy -195 about what it was.
- 14:55Last night about what they were last night.
- 14:57About the same one or time I there's something about the way
- 15:01that he went into second base. You've heard me bring that a
- 15:04couple. Of different times.
- 15:05Three times today, yeah. It's something seemed.
- 15:08Off there what is his out total of has that prop been posted yet
- 15:12it. Is let me pull them up here.
- 15:14I think Bieber's going to have to wear one.
- 15:16Either he's going to be good, he's obviously going to go deep,
- 15:18or he's going to have to wear it because.
- 15:21Bassett's Bassett will be Bassett will follow him.
- 15:24I'm convinced of that. Say it.
- 15:25Say he gives up, You know, a three run Homer in the 4th
- 15:28inning and it's 5/1. I mean, don't you just have to
- 15:32wear it then and say we, we can't use our bullpen here
- 15:35because the likelihood of coming back is small.
- 15:37So Bieber keeps going out there. We save our bullpen for Game 5.
- 15:41We'll get an off day reset and then hopefully go.
- 15:45Isn't that the way you would manage if you're Schneider?
- 15:47That scenario plays out just like that.
- 15:49What are you doing? Are you pulling Bieber right
- 15:51away? Going to basket?
- 15:52No. No.
- 15:54Because in order to win 3 consecutive and that's what it
- 15:56would take. I think he almost punt this
- 15:58game. Yeah.
- 15:59So as you can tell, I am starting to look on the over
- 16:04side of that one. All right, pitching props for
- 16:06today. KS are up, hits allowed out.
- 16:08There we go. 18 1/2 is the number for Ohtani.
- 16:13I would take the under. I would too.
- 16:15That's 16 and that's 16 2/3 innings to beat our six and 2/3
- 16:18innings to beat you. And Bieber is 14 1/2.
- 16:22Can he get through 5, four and 2/3?
- 16:25If he gets through the first, the first has been his bugaboo.
- 16:30I think I'm under Ohtani. Yep, me too.
- 16:33Over Bieber. I think I I think you, I think
- 16:35you hit the nail on the head. Your reasoning behind it.
- 16:39He's got to wear one because the bullpen they had, they threw
- 16:42nine guys. Dodgers went 10.
- 16:44Dodgers bullpen, you know, keep here and get to the bullpen.
- 16:47Get to the bullpen. Well, they got to the bullpen.
- 16:49They were unbelievable that bullpen last time.
- 16:51What a game. As he said, start the show.
- 16:53It's been a bad, bad couple of days for baseball's boring fans
- 16:57out there. Jack Dreyer got in there.
- 16:59Saw that he was good. Got one, gave up a hit and very
- 17:02quickly they went to Sasaki. Boy, he.
- 17:05Who wasn't great yesterday? He.
- 17:07If you're a Dodgers fan, would he make?
- 17:09He makes me nervous. Yeah.
- 17:11He just. I know he's talented.
- 17:15The movement on the ball, it's unbelievable sick.
- 17:18It really is. Oh, man, I don't know how
- 17:21they're going to pull us off tonight.
- 17:22Even this series up at 2 a piece, I would love to see.
- 17:25Best of three, please bring it on.
- 17:27One in LA in the next, one or two in in Rodgers Center,

- 18:08I'm Miller Condon, welcome back. Coming up on 1:30 on the Iowa
- 18:12Sports Radio Network flagship from Des Moines sports station
- 18:16One O 6.3 KX&O. Let's talk some college
- 18:19football, shall we, with our guy Bill Bender from the Sporting
- 18:22News. He joins us.
- 18:23Bill, Trent, Ken, thank you for coming on.
- 18:25How are you, Bill Bender? I'm doing well, thanks for
- 18:28having me on. No appreciate it.
- 18:29Obviously the one of the stories of this season's all the big
- 18:33name schools that have coaching vacancies this early in the
- 18:36process. Not shocked that Brian Kelly was
- 18:39let go once Franklin was. It seemed like it's open season
- 18:42on whoever you have carte blanche to do it if you need to
- 18:45do believe you need to. LSU is as good a job as there is
- 18:49probably the top job that is open.
- 18:52Now your thoughts on potential? I mean, Lane Kiffin could go
- 18:55where he chooses, seemingly. Will he choose to go anywhere,
- 18:59do you think? Bill I.
- 19:02Think that would be the one that he would entertain knowing that
- 19:06you know, three of the last four guys that there won national
- 19:09titles. The expectations are you're
- 19:11guaranteed almost a top 10 or Green class.
- 19:14And yeah, it's one of those jobs, destination jobs, no
- 19:18question. And said Ole Miss has the 4th
- 19:21best record in college football among Power 4 schools the last
- 19:26three years. So why leave when you've already
- 19:29built that? It's you could have a statue
- 19:33built right. I mean, if he takes takes him to
- 19:35a playoff this year, does some things that have not been done
- 19:38at Ole Miss, it changes the equation and and makes it very
- 19:41difficult Where at LSU, well, you're just another in the line
- 19:44of guys that have won a national championship there and you can
- 19:46win maybe the tick higher level. I'm not sure sure how much
- 19:50higher that level actually is. You know, it kind of leads to
- 19:53that trickle down effect of what's going to happen next for
- 19:56the Wisconsin's, the Michigan State's that next year that
- 19:59might be looking for coaches in this environment with.
- 20:02So many jobs open, a couple of blue bloods with LSU and Penn
- 20:05State, Florida you throw into the mix.
- 20:07Does it make sense for that next year of of program to actually
- 20:11do that? Or do you just say, you know
- 20:13what, let's give it another shot, let's give it another year
- 20:15and we'll wait till maybe that carousel slows down next year in
- 20:182026? I think some some schools are
- 20:21going to take that route. You know, knowing that LSU, Penn
- 20:25State and Florida are going to probably get, you know, the
- 20:29higher ranked candidates here. UCLA is another interesting job,
- 20:33but that it might not. You know, they didn't look good
- 20:37against Michigan. I mean, this is a different
- 20:39Michigan State team. I don't know what Wisconsin is
- 20:42going to do with Luke Fickle. I did think they showed the
- 20:44fight against Oregon on Saturday.
- 20:47When you're already at 8 Power 4 openings and probably at least a
- 20:51couple more, it could mean that a guy leaves the school to go
- 20:56there and then that one opens up.
- 20:58So we're we're going to have a few more, no question.
- 21:01Bill the Heisman usually has an overwhelming favorite at at
- 21:05seemingly at this point once we get into November.
- 21:09Chair Mendoza Neat deserves to be a favorite, but he's a narrow
- 21:12favorite. They're this this award is
- 21:14anything but settled at this point.
- 21:16Is it? Oh, no, yeah.
- 21:19I mean, Mendoza, yeah. Jeremiah Smith, Insane.
- 21:25There's a couple others I mean. Hayes King's got a shot right.
- 21:28Yeah, Hayes King. I mean, I I'm working on a story
- 21:31about who knows what happens with Blake Horvath.
- 21:34Yeah. Maybe quarterback.
- 21:36He, he, I mean, there's two ways to look at it.
- 21:38There's a little bit of that and then there's like, OK, who's the
- 21:41MVP of their team? And I've said this on the show a
- 21:44couple times this season. I think Haines King means more
- 21:47to his team than any other player in the country.
- 21:51Trenton, I kind of feel the same way.
- 21:53I kind of think Marcel Reed might fall into that category as
- 21:56well, right? He's probably not getting
- 21:59enough. I agree and given what AI mean,
- 22:01Texas A&M #3 in the country they they basically got Brian Kelly
- 22:06fired by winning at night like that.
- 22:10And good on both sides of the ball.
- 22:13Brian Kelly never seemed like a cultural fit at LSU.
- 22:17The fake family when he showed up there at the basketball game,
- 22:20it just it, it was hard to make sense of that hire yet.
- 22:24And we see if it didn't work. But there are fits still out
- 22:28there. He's 63 years old.
- 22:29We see another guy in the 60s that is setting college football
- 22:32on fire with Kirk Cinetti. I have an idea for you.
- 22:35Michigan State is not real pleased with what's happening
- 22:37with Jonathan Smith in year #2 there.
- 22:40They pull the plug. That could be a soft landing
- 22:42state. He was in Michigan for a long
- 22:44time at Saginaw, MI State and a reunion of sorts and bringing
- 22:48Brian Kelly in there. Is that something that could
- 22:51work for Sparty? Oh, I think he should be Penn
- 22:55State's call if Matt Rule doesn't happen.
- 22:59You know, Yeah, I I think drawback to taking that Michigan
- 23:05State job and they've all dealt with it.
- 23:07Back to next statement. Mark Santonio kind of changed it
- 23:10a little bit, but Michigan was down.
- 23:12You are second. Fiddle.
- 23:15This way around your second fiddle to Michigan in that job.
- 23:18Nationally, at least now, even when you're winning, it feels
- 23:22like the story's always Michigan.
- 23:24So, but I I had not thought about that what you said, Trent,
- 23:29though Michigan State has been class contender, Big 10
- 23:32championship contender. Maybe he could do that for a few
- 23:35years, but I don't want to say that job is not big enough, but
- 23:40it might not be. Bill, from a national
- 23:42perspective, I want to ask you about the the Hawkeyes,
- 23:45obviously four and one playing better to fit their defenses
- 23:48significantly better than it was in September.
- 23:52The big the Big 10 looks as though three or four playoff
- 23:56bound teams, Oregon, Indiana and Ohio State obviously at the top
- 24:00of that list. USC and I when they'll play each
- 24:03other coming up here in a couple of weeks.
- 24:05Where are you on the Hawkeyes? Is this is their playoff hopes?
- 24:08Are they legit when it comes to the Nationals press and lets you
- 24:12speak for them? I mean, you're starting to peak
- 24:16on their schedule and you look at it and say, well, they should
- 24:20be tending to that. Indiana lost wouldn't look too
- 24:22bad. I mean, that was a competitive
- 24:24game. And you know, obviously I think
- 24:28if you get the ten wins, you have a chance.
- 24:30I think they're past the ten wins is a lot better than UFC,
- 24:36Michigan, a couple other teams, Washington.
- 24:39I mean, USC has to play Oregon, Michigan has to play Ohio State,
- 24:43Nebraska has to play USC this weekend.
- 24:46So there if Iowa just does its job, the there will be a
- 24:51conversation at the end about them possibly being that fourth
- 24:54Big 10 team. And Washington is going to have
- 24:57a similar opportunity. Look at what they have their
- 24:59schedule until they get to the end.
- 25:01And that kind of leads to Oregon, which I think a lot of
- 25:04people have kind of in there is a foregone conclusion.
- 25:06They got to go to Iowa City, they got to go to Seattle to
- 25:08rivalry game at the end here. And that's the other part is,
- 25:12you know, we get so ahead of our skis every single year just
- 25:16thinking that things are going to go.
- 25:17It sorts itself. We're arguing about 9 and three
- 25:20teams a year ago and we might be back to the same thing.
- 25:22That last team in might be arguing again about a nine and
- 25:25three team. Why do we do the cells to
- 25:27ourselves every year, Bill? We have segments to kill and
- 25:30columns to write. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 25:32Well, you know, and that's I've, I've been talking about that for
- 25:35a couple weeks. Like you take a team like
- 25:37Michigan or Texas, if they get left out at nine and three,
- 25:41you're wondering, OK, well, why do we step out and play the the
- 25:45big non con game if we're just going to take 10 and two team
- 25:49over the nine and three team? And I guess winning those games
- 25:53makes a difference too. I mean, for Oklahoma, you know,
- 25:56if they're sitting there 10 and two or nine and three, but you
- 25:59know, you do got to win the regular season games.
- 26:01But I do think that's going to be a point of contention they
- 26:06let for the at large team. At what point would they let a
- 26:11nine and three team over a 10 and two team?
- 26:13And I I still don't see it happening.
- 26:15What about Notre Dame? Where are you on the Fighting
- 26:17Irish? Their their problem, I mean,
- 26:19their schedule is I don't know what their most difficult game
- 26:22lying maybe at Pitt, maybe. So if they're 10 and two with
- 26:27losses back-to-back to Miami and Texas A&M, does does Notre Dame
- 26:31crawl slide into this thing? Well, we lost him.
- 26:43We did. We'll get him back.
- 26:45Yeah, we'll try and like to know the answer to that because I'm
- 26:49not so sure. Doc who?
- 26:50Scott Dockerman from The Athletic, he is the Athletics
- 26:55kind of playoff prognosticator, started this column three weeks
- 26:58ago. On Monday, it comes out he
- 27:00didn't have them in the first week.
- 27:01Last week he had them in as like at 11.
- 27:03I think it was the piece that came out yesterday after this
- 27:07weekend's most recent results. He does not have them in.
- 27:10Nice win over USC, I'll give you that.
- 27:12A couple of weeks ago in the rain.
- 27:15We'll see. So Bill's back with us from
- 27:17Sporting News. Bill, ask you about Notre Dame
- 27:1910 and two. They've got nobody left on their
- 27:21schedule, with maybe the exception of Pitt I guess.
- 27:24Do they get in a 10 and two bill or are they on the cusp?
- 27:27Are is there are there in danger maybe of being on the outside
- 27:30looking in? I have them on the outside right
- 27:33now, but I think they'll get in. I do.
- 27:35If they get 10 and two, they'll be in because we talked about,
- 27:38you know, maybe that fourth Big 10 team not getting in.
- 27:41I don't know that five SCC teams will get in because they have to
- 27:44play each other here down the stretch and we'll have some
- 27:46attrition. So I and I like the way Notre
- 27:50Dame's playing. You know, it's not like both
- 27:52those losses are bad. I agree, you know, but but there
- 27:55is no margin for error. They can't lose the pit.
- 27:57They can't lose the Navy. They would have to finish ten
- 28:00and two I'm. With you, Trent.
- 28:02The SEC, Tennessee's a top 15 team.
- 28:05They beat nobody. You see Missouri, they didn't
- 28:09leave home for seven weeks. On and on and on.
- 28:13Are you a believer in what we have seen ESPN morph into?
- 28:17And it is when you talk about state TV, it feels like that's
- 28:20what it is. Many times when you flip on your
- 28:22television and go to ESPN in the SEC, do you buy that narrative,
- 28:26Bill? Not, I don't know, I mean this
- 28:30is what networks do. They hype up their games.
- 28:33You know, Fox should hype up these Big 10 teams more.
- 28:36You know, INBC should be doing that because ESPN does do a good
- 28:40job of it with the SEC, with the whole SEC all day thing.
- 28:44I think they do have a more compact race of College Football
- 28:50Playoff contenders. You know, last week, though, it
- 28:53would have been interesting to see how they would have spun
- 28:57Alabama losing to South Carolina had that happened.
- 29:00You know, because I got scolded for that a little bit because I
- 29:04was just thinking, you know, Ohio State losing at Purdue
- 29:08wouldn't have got that. Oh, it's just a tough place to
- 29:10play sometimes treatment. So, you know, I don't know that
- 29:12the SEC has a dominant team like the Big 10 does and and
- 29:16potentially 2 dominant teams that the Big 10 has.
- 29:19But the race has been fun and I do think they're good for I
- 29:23think they'll end up with four playoff teams, which is kind of
- 29:25like the compromise. My last thing for you Bill, I'm
- 29:28guessing that the when the schedule came out, you'd already
- 29:30been planned Saturday, November the 1st to be at the Shoe, Penn
- 29:33State, Ohio State. Obviously that game has lost a
- 29:36ton of luster. Are you still going to?
- 29:39Is that where you will be on Saturday?
- 29:41I mean that that that's planned. You know, obviously the game has
- 29:45has changed a little bit. And you know, for Penn State,
- 29:50it's kind of that I would not be surprised if this was a little
- 29:53bit of their back against the wall coming off a bye week
- 29:55reset. And their defense is pretty good
- 29:58that they at least challenge the Buckeyes for a while.
- 30:02But it is hard to picture Penn State winning that game against
- 30:06this combination of offense and defense.
- 30:08The Buckeyes have also coming off a bye week and already tough
- 30:12enough to beat at home. All right, figure out Plinko for
- 30:16us. That's what I'm calling the Big
- 30:1712. Just put the chip in there.
- 30:18Nobody knows how it's going to fall at the bottom.
- 30:21You got undefeat of BYUI. Still don't like that team that
- 30:24much. You got Cincinnati and Houston.
- 30:27I kind of like both of those teams.
- 30:29Texas Tech, We know about the talent.
- 30:31Utah, Sometimes they look great, other times they don't.
- 30:33They got entries. Hammonds out for Texas Tech on
- 30:36and on and on. Get out that crystal ball.
- 30:38Bill Bender, who is playing and winning the Big 12 Championship
- 30:41game. You know, I kind of like BYU
- 30:45and, you know, Bare Bachman, they run the ball, stop the run
- 30:50and they find ways to win. Now, if Texas Tech, they need
- 30:54Baron Morton to be healthy. If he's healthy, I think they're
- 30:58my pick that they were would be able to, you know, get through
- 31:02it. They had their one loss at
- 31:03Arizona State. That happens.
- 31:04But big one, right? Texas Tech, I think Texas Tech
- 31:08we want to use next week and we have Cincinnati, Utah this week.
- 31:12If Cincinnati somehow beat Utah, they would be my pick, but I
- 31:16don't know that they can go out there and win that game.
- 31:18I'll give you a sneaky 1. Texas Tech K State.
- 31:20This week's got a little cache to it as well as the Wildcats
- 31:24look to claw back into things after their start to Big 12
- 31:27play. Bill Bender from the Sporting
- 31:29News Sporting News for Bill Bender.
- 31:30Bill, thanks for jumping on. Appreciate it.
- 31:32We'll talk to you in the weeks ahead.
- 31:33Thank you, Bill. Hey no problem, thanks for
- 31:35having me on. Take care.
- 31:36Nice to talk to you, Bill Bender from The Sporting News.
- 31:39That's kind of a relatively big spot in the Big 12 this week.
- 31:42Would you say that? The biggest spots in Manhattan?
- 31:47K State's not out of this. That's what you said.
- 31:48Texas Tech and K State's the sneaky big.
- 31:51Game. That's the biggest, I agree.
- 31:52In a game where you have two ranked teams, I think the bigger
- 31:57game is Texas Tech, K State. It is absolutely K State's not
- 32:03dead. They're three and two in
- 32:05conference play and you look at their pad.
- 32:07How did they lose to Arizona? They did different team.
- 32:12Obviously they lose over in Dublin in the rain.
- 32:14Lost the Baylor game? Yep.
- 32:16Lost cause what? The Arizona game was the one
- 32:18that didn't count as a conference game.
- 32:19Is that one right? Oh, that's right.
- 32:21Yeah, that's right. You're right.
- 32:22So that's not a conference loss. They're three and two in the
- 32:25conference. Texas Tech this week, they get a
- 32:28bye and then they finish up with this at Okie State.
- 32:32No, that's a cinch at Utah, tough.
- 32:36And then home for Colorado. Oh boy, they win this at Utah,
- 32:39you said. It's a one game schedule if they
- 32:42win this week. If they win this week.
- 32:44To get to 2 and then figure out those tiebreakers.
- 32:47You know K State's in the hunt. K State's Alive wins their by so
- 32:51thereby is after this week before Oklahoma State.
- 32:54TCU still alive? And you know what?
- 32:57I thought they were going to be better than they are.
- 32:59No, they're not. Iowa State can be TCU.
- 33:02They're off this week before Iowa State.
- 33:05They still have to go and look at this closing gauntlet for
- 33:07TCU. They're going to, one way or the
- 33:09other, help decide this thing. OK, lay it on me.
- 33:12At BYU. At Houston, home for Cincinnati.
- 33:17Holy mackerel, that's the who's who at the top of the standings.
- 33:20Right now they will help determine who is there and they
- 33:24they don't completely control their own destiny.
- 33:25No, if they went out, they're going to be handing.
- 33:28They've got to buy it. Before Iowa State, you said?
- 33:31Yes, they are. Well, they're off.
- 33:33Yeah, this week. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:35Before the Iowa State. Game and they're three and two.
- 33:37They're three and two. So if they went out, yeah,
- 33:40Hoover's been. He's not.
- 33:42He's a good player. I just don't know what he has
- 33:44around them. Yeah, yeah.
- 33:46He doesn't have a Quintin Johnson.
- 33:47That's for. Sure.
- 33:48No, no, that's for sure. And it took him a while to get
- 33:50going. What's he got?
- 33:5222 passes to 6 picks. Mcallister's all right.
- 33:55Yep. But you know, and after him, I
- 33:57think it's a pretty big. Drop.
- 33:59Off and the rest of that wide receiver.
- 34:00He can run, he can run. We'll take a time out, we'll
- 34:04come back. Trench plays of the day.
- 34:06So what do you when it comes to the World Series, you can't bet
- 34:09the game we can. Sure.
- 34:11I'm going to. You are?
- 34:13Well, yeah. Does it seem like a free square
- 34:14to take LA it? Feels like a free square to me.
- 34:17It does to me too. But not to take LA.
- 34:21What you're taking the Jays Find out.
- 34:26All right. Circus sports sponsors Miller
- 34:28and Condon on a Tuesday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 34:32Network. I'm Miller and Condon.
- 34:33Welcome back. Final few minutes here on a
- 34:36Tuesday Iowa Sports Radio Network Des Moines sports
- 34:40station one O 6.3 KXNO game 4 World Series tonight 7 O clock
- 34:46pitch for that one. No announcement as to who's
- 34:49going to start tomorrow for either team, at least as of yet.
- 34:54Is that out of the norm? Think trying to think back to
- 34:56previous. Years.
- 34:57Not the way baseball's morphed into, you know, it used to be.
- 35:00We knew. We knew before the season began
- 35:03or the series began. That's not the case anymore.
- 35:06Been trending this direction. So no, not a surprise on that
- 35:08one. We'll see how tonight goes.
- 35:10I mean, I think that's going to impact also the way this thing
- 35:13plays out and the way that both teams are obviously if we're 22.
- 35:17A lot different than everyone Blake smelt tomorrow, in all
- 35:20likelihood, for the Dodgers. Right.
- 35:22I mean, you can probably put that one in pen.
- 35:24I would think he would get an opportunity to the clincher.
- 35:26So we saw Yamamoto warming up, and how about?
- 35:29That No, I didn't see it. I just read it, yeah.
- 35:31I was hoping and I told Bowen Camp that last night as we were
- 35:34tweeting back and forth at each other.
- 35:36So he was 155 as I told him. You know, that was the one thing
- 35:40I wanted to go 19 because I wanted to see Yamamoto, they
- 35:42said. He was.
- 35:43Coming in, he was coming into the game and I wanted to see
- 35:47that piece of it. Same thing tonight.
- 35:49Because the one. He probably, you know, obviously
- 35:52they're looking ahead. If he pitches, then probably
- 35:54goes their way. He may not get to pitch again in
- 35:56the series. Right.
- 35:57And if he does, maybe it'll be game seven.
- 36:00You know, that was also his scheduled day to throw, so he's
- 36:03normally throwing his bullpen that day anyway.
- 36:05Well, throwing a bullpen, let's do it the game.
- 36:08And that could be the if, if we go long tonight, maybe Snell has
- 36:12to go out there and you go that direction and if you feel like
- 36:14you have it, you kind of go that way.
- 36:16But we'll see. On that front, I got a lot of
- 36:18props, a lot more than normal. OK.
- 36:20Playing the out totals for both starting pitching, we talked
- 36:23about this and talked through it earlier.
- 36:25Otani, we're going under 18 outs.
- 36:27That's -125 at Circa, we're going over 15 outs for Bieber,
- 36:32that is -115 so we have potential with pushes.
- 36:36You're betting there's half different places that you shop
- 36:40in the market. So whatever way you want to go,
- 36:42you can find that in the market. Two more player props.
- 36:45I'm going to play Mookie Betts to hit a home run over 1/2 / 5
- 36:49to 1. You said it.
- 36:50He's 2, right? He absolutely is.
- 36:53He's going to get a ton of opportunities.
- 36:55And here's another angle because Schneider said maybe outside of
- 36:58the first inning, they're not going to pitch to Otani.
- 37:01So because of that, we're going to go Otani over 1/2 stolen
- 37:06base, little better than 3:00 to 1:00 on that.
- 37:08But don't forget, throughout the night you are throughout our
- 37:11show, you've been talking about him limping.
- 37:13He was limping and that's part of the game that we have.
- 37:17Plus 180. All right.
- 37:18Plus 180 for the Blue Jays tonight.
- 37:21We are going to jump aboard with that one.
- 37:23Taking the Jays. The tax bullpen, the quote
- 37:25concerns that I have with Otani. I just wonder, I think the price
- 37:29is too good. This little bullpen kind of
- 37:32tracker that helps me when I'm going through and doing my games
- 37:35basically says the advantage because of bullpen usage goes
- 37:39back and instead of the plus 180 I could get, that should be more
- 37:42like plus 165. SA lot of value in the Blue Jays
- 37:45and we will jump on that. Plus we're not done.
- 37:49We got 2 college football games tonight and I like the dog in
- 37:52both of them. Give me Texas State getting the
- 37:55seven against James Madison JMU get a little bit of buzz.
- 37:58Hey, you're looking for that group of five team.
- 38:00If the American keeps beating up on each other, watch out for
- 38:03them. Watch out themselves as they
- 38:05make their way to San Marcos, TX.
- 38:07I think that's. No idea.
- 38:08And give me the minors against the Red Hot Owls of Kennesaw
- 38:12State. I'm going to grab UTEP tonight
- 38:15plus the 11. UTEP Plus 11 and James No Texas.
- 38:21Texas State plus a touchdown. Good stuff.
- 38:24I'll be watching baseball. I will too.
- 38:26Yeah. And then maybe a little bit or
- 38:28so to wild Winnipeg Jets between periods.
- 38:31I will not make. It make their first appearance
- 38:34against the Wild this year. I didn't think it would be.
- 38:36So no, no, didn't get there. Mitch Holtis will join us
- 38:39tomorrow. We'll talk more about the Monday
- 38:40nighter from last night with the Chiefs, who are now officially
- 38:43in the playoffs. Should the playoffs start today,
- 38:46that would be the seventh seed taking on the New England
- 38:49Patriots in New England. How about that?
- 38:51Seen that game before? Have a time or two, have we not?
- 38:55Different quarterback for the Patriots, though?
- 38:56I don't. At least I believe that would be
- 38:58the case. Anyways, that's it for us.
- 39:00Off the bench they will come. Lucas and Sean from 2:00 until
- 39:045. Overtime Iowa 5 to 6.
- 39:06Miller and Condon talk sports with you Monday through Friday
- 39:10from noon until 2 on the Iowa Sports Radio Network and Des
