Latest / The Next Round / The Next Round: Did Michigan Get Bailed Out? LSU Buries Clemson & Dabo’s Future in Doubt | Hour 1
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: All right.
- 0:01Speaker 2: NFL starts on Wednesday. This is the way I'm doing
- 0:04Speaker 2: the NFL schedule since we're doing more NFL talk here
- 0:06Speaker 2: on Sporting State. So I'm ready to go with NFL talk.
- 0:10Speaker 2: But we started with college football this week. So we
- 0:12Speaker 2: got a lot of college football reaction. We'll get to
- 0:15Speaker 2: the NFL as we move later in this show, but
- 0:18Speaker 2: really into Tuesday and the start of the season on Wednesday.
- 0:21Speaker 2: But craziness this weekend. Welcome into the next round presented
- 0:26Speaker 2: by Hard Rock Bets. I'm Jim Dunaway, Lance Taylor, Ryan Brown.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Let's do this. I've got one thing off the top here,
- 0:34Speaker 2: but then I want to do, I'll say a game
- 0:36Speaker 2: and then we'll react to that game. And then you
- 0:37Speaker 2: say a game, we'll react and we'll just go around
- 0:39Speaker 2: the table because it's so hard on this because we
- 0:43Speaker 2: all want to talk about every game all at once.
- 0:46Speaker 2: So that's where we're going to do it. But first,
- 0:48Speaker 2: I know you've all seen it, but Hard Rock Bets
- 0:52Speaker 2: this weekend had a guy who.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Did a Dunaway. He made a $ 1 bet.
- 0:57Speaker 2: On a 20-team parlay, Forrester, give me Forrester's microphone. Forrester,
- 1:01Speaker 2: it's a $ 1 bet on a 20, I think, how
- 1:04Speaker 2: many legs? Was it 20?
- 1:06Speaker 1: 20. Did it hit? It hit.
- 1:09Speaker 3: It hit.
- 1:09Speaker 4: These guys used to drive.
- 1:11Speaker 5: $ 1.
- 1:11Speaker 1: 06 wager paid out $ 130, 000. That's why you do them.
- 1:13Speaker 1: That's why you do them, Lance.
- 1:22Speaker 4: It's basically a lottery ticket. It is. A $ 1 bet.
- 1:25Speaker 4: Hard Rock will never get their money back on this dude.
- 1:29Speaker 4: I hated it in college. We used to run the
- 1:32Speaker 4: 10-team parlay. It would pay out $ 150 to one. And
- 1:35Speaker 4: every year, one or two guys, they'd do it every week,
- 1:37Speaker 4: the $ 5 lottery ticket. And when they'd hit it, you
- 1:41Speaker 4: just never would get your money back. Those guys, they're
- 1:44Speaker 4: always going to.
- 1:45Speaker 6: They disappear, right?
- 1:45Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:46Speaker 4: Well, I mean, they're just going to continue to do
- 1:48Speaker 4: those parlays, and you might get it back over 15 years.
- 1:51Speaker 2: One dollar at a time, right? Now, my seven-teamer did
- 1:56Speaker 2: not hit. Dang you, Charlotte. Charlotte lost at home.
- 2:04Speaker 4: And triple overtime.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Triple overtime.
- 2:06Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:07Speaker 2: That's what gets you. If you win six of the seven,
- 2:10Speaker 2: it is Charlotte. Why did I even put that one
- 2:12Speaker 2: in there?
- 2:12Speaker 1: It was the FCS team that beat them. I forgot.
- 2:15Speaker 1: How do you even have that on your radar? Charlotte
- 2:18Speaker 1: was playing some nobody. You know me. I do such
- 2:20Speaker 1: great research. I'm going down. I'm going down. Oh, that's seven. Okay.
- 2:26Speaker 1: All right.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Let's get into some of the games. I'm going to
- 2:29Speaker 2: start with LSU Clemson. This will be my first pick.
- 2:33Speaker 2: We started Monday Morning Live. It's on our platform if
- 2:35Speaker 2: you want to go watch it with Lugan Bill. I
- 2:38Speaker 2: want to start with the other side of the coin
- 2:42Speaker 2: before we talk about LSU. Is Clemson that bad?
- 2:48Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:49Speaker 4: I think they are.
- 2:50Speaker 2: I mean, is it that bad to where as the
- 2:53Speaker 2: year goes on, it's going to be a lot more
- 2:55Speaker 2: losses and they're going to be lucky to go to
- 2:57Speaker 2: a bowl game? Because it looked like we were watching
- 3:01Speaker 2: the LSU spring game and it was the ones against
- 3:05Speaker 2: the not ones.
- 3:05Speaker 4: Yeah, it's like Lane Kiffin and his staff wanted to
- 3:09Speaker 4: punish whatever bad behavior was on the threes and fours
- 3:14Speaker 4: and threw them all over there and said, hey, look,
- 3:16Speaker 4: you guys go out there, completely embarrass them and run
- 3:19Speaker 4: it up. Dabo, look, and I said this before the game,
- 3:22Speaker 4: I thought LSU would pull away. I didn't think that
- 3:24Speaker 4: they would completely dominate for 60 minutes. I mean, that
- 3:27Speaker 4: was domination. That looked like one of the old school
- 3:30Speaker 4: Georgia or Alabama teams out there But I don't know,
- 3:34Speaker 4: has Dabo gotten lazy? I mean, it was a lazy
- 3:37Speaker 4: hire with Chad Morris. Chad Morris is one of the
- 3:40Speaker 4: most overrated offensive coordinators in history.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Hadn't called play since COVID, I think it was. He's
- 3:44Speaker 1: catching a lot of heat. I would imagine. They were
- 3:46Speaker 1: pretty bad. I mean, what did they have, five first downs?
- 3:49Speaker 1: I mean, it was terrible. Line couldn't block. Listen, this
- 3:54Speaker 1: is not.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Have you seen that one video where the guard stands
- 3:58Speaker 2: up and he's like, He didn't even know what play
- 3:59Speaker 2: we were running.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Yeah, and the defender could not believe, I'm just getting
- 4:04Speaker 1: a free lane to the quarterback here. It's like the
- 4:06Speaker 1: defender almost stops and taps him on the shoulder and says,
- 4:08Speaker 1: are you supposed to be blocking me? At least rub me. Yeah,
- 4:12Speaker 1: at least rub me.
- 4:13Speaker 2: They won't score me a point if I go untouched.
- 4:16Speaker 1: And listen, this is not knee-jerk. You guys, we've got
- 4:19Speaker 1: some new people on our platform here from Sporting State.
- 4:21Speaker 1: We welcome it. You guys, I think, will back me
- 4:23Speaker 1: up that this is not knee-jerk Ryan. I have said
- 4:26Speaker 1: this for two or three years now. Dabo had to
- 4:29Speaker 1: be dragged kicking and screaming into this era of college football.
- 4:33Speaker 1: I've got some numbers here. And I'm fine that Dabo
- 4:35Speaker 1: doesn't like NIL. He's got every right not to. I'm
- 4:38Speaker 1: fine Dabo does not like the transfer portal. He's got
- 4:41Speaker 1: every right to. But if you're going to say things
- 4:43Speaker 1: like the day players get paid will be the day
- 4:46Speaker 1: I retire.
- 4:47Speaker 4: It's time to retire.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Well, but I'm just saying, if you're going to say
- 4:50Speaker 1: that and you're going to take that stance, and I
- 4:52Speaker 1: said it three years ago, Dabo's going to take a
- 4:55Speaker 1: stance that is contrary to every other college football coach
- 4:57Speaker 1: in America. This will be a great test to see
- 4:59Speaker 1: if you can win with that stance. And he has
- 5:02Speaker 1: not won with that stance.
- 5:04Speaker 2: I got some numbers after we hear Dabo. Now, you're
- 5:07Speaker 2: going to think Dabo's a giant and he's in a
- 5:09Speaker 2: very teeny tiny house.
- 5:11Speaker 1: But this is the way it's been.
- 5:13Speaker 2: This is how they shot Elf with Will Ferrell, by
- 5:15Speaker 2: the way. This is the way it's been in Baton Rouge.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Forrester can attest to this. The locker room is small.
- 5:21Speaker 2: The post-game interview room is so small. Our studio would
- 5:27Speaker 2: not fit into the post-game interview room. Our studio, it's
- 5:30Speaker 2: half the size of this room, of our studio. that
- 5:34Speaker 2: they do the post-game media in.
- 5:36Speaker 7: I mean, this looks like that one room in the
- 5:37Speaker 7: McWayne Center.
- 5:38Speaker 4: Where you walk up.
- 5:40Speaker 1: And it just gets more narrow.
- 5:42Speaker 2: So Dabo is not 6'11 here. This is normal-sized Dabo,
- 5:48Speaker 2: but with a beat-down heart after what he saw his
- 5:51Speaker 2: team put on tape down in Baton Rouge.
- 5:54Speaker 5: Yeah, pretty self-explanatory. Best thing about that one is it's open.
- 5:58Speaker 5: It's really....
- 6:01Speaker 3: Just poor performance, not what we worked for, expected. You know,
- 6:07Speaker 3: credit to LSU. Congratulations to them. They did a hell
- 6:10Speaker 3: of a job of executing their plan.
- 6:14Speaker 5: And, you know, we just never really gave ourselves a
- 6:17Speaker 5: chance to settle in.
- 6:18Speaker 3: You know, the pick six was really big as far
- 6:21Speaker 3: as a momentum standpoint. But at the end of the day,
- 6:25Speaker 3: you're not going to win if you can't stop and
- 6:27Speaker 3: run it. I know everybody's focus will be on the
- 6:31Speaker 3: score and all that stuff, but we've got to put
- 6:34Speaker 3: our focus on what we can control.
- 6:36Speaker 5: This one's early in the season.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Again, it's a tough opener, and it's got a worst-case
- 6:44Speaker 3: scenario for us.
- 6:45Speaker 5: So I've got to go to work next week and
- 6:47Speaker 5: see if we can find a way to win this one.
- 6:49Speaker 2: They're going to focus on the score. It was 51-10
- 6:52Speaker 2: in prime time. I don't know how many 51-10 games
- 6:55Speaker 2: Fowler and Herbstreet have ever had to call.
- 6:57Speaker 6: I mean, that.
- 6:57Speaker 4: Was their worst loss in 20, no, 40 years. 40 years,
- 7:03Speaker 4: worst loss. I'll go on and say it. This is
- 7:05Speaker 4: Jimbo Fisher North. I mean, if you go back and
- 7:07Speaker 4: you look at the coordinators, and we talked about this,
- 7:09Speaker 4: Tony Elliott, Brent Venables, when he won his championships, he
- 7:11Speaker 4: had two elite quarterbacks, Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence. I mean,
- 7:16Speaker 4: give him credit because he did it, but it's done.
- 7:18Speaker 1: It's done.
- 7:19Speaker 4: And I thought that they would win nine or ten
- 7:20Speaker 4: games based on schedule.
- 7:21Speaker 1: I did, too.
- 7:22Speaker 4: But when I look at the schedule now, Georgia Southern's
- 7:24Speaker 4: a win next week. Charleston Southern's going to be a win.
- 7:26Speaker 4: But every game, including at Syracuse, is a losable game.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Brown, to your point, what you were talking about with
- 7:32Speaker 2: Dabo reluctant to come into this era, they lost nine
- 7:37Speaker 2: players to the NFL draft last year. They brought, you know,
- 7:41Speaker 2: and there are some that just graduate. They don't go
- 7:43Speaker 2: to the NFL. They lost nine to the NFL draft.
- 7:45Speaker 2: They brought 11 players in on the portal. And they
- 7:48Speaker 2: were 7-6 last year, so they did not do a
- 7:50Speaker 2: massive overhaul. You lose nine to the draft. Who knows
- 7:54Speaker 2: how many other players you just lost to graduation out
- 7:58Speaker 2: of eligibility. And you bring 11 in on the portal.
- 8:02Speaker 2: And basically you were a 7-6 team, and you decided, hey,
- 8:05Speaker 2: we're going to roll with basically that roster today. And
- 8:09Speaker 2: we're going to roll with our quarterback. Now, he's a
- 8:11Speaker 2: local guy with us here, Christopher Vazina. I don't know
- 8:14Speaker 2: if that's a fair look at what he can do
- 8:17Speaker 2: because of the way the offensive line played.
- 8:19Speaker 1: You better hope it's not because he was atrocious.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Yeah, but it looked like they moved very quickly to
- 8:25Speaker 2: the freshman, and you just wonder who will play against
- 8:27Speaker 2: Georgia Southern and how they'll handle that moving forward. I
- 8:32Speaker 2: was stunned at how it looked like it was– one
- 8:36Speaker 2: team's varsity against the junior varsity.
- 8:39Speaker 4: Yeah, if you're a Clemson fan, though, you've seen this before.
- 8:42Speaker 4: You know, DJ plays bad. You bring in Cade Klubnick.
- 8:45Speaker 4: He's the future. Tate Reynolds is the future. When you
- 8:47Speaker 4: brought him in, he didn't look good. It didn't really
- 8:49Speaker 4: matter who was in there. I don't think you got
- 8:51Speaker 4: enough pieces around this. And I don't know where Clemson
- 8:55Speaker 4: goes from this.
- 8:55Speaker 1: I really don't. I was shocked.
- 8:57Speaker 4: The game couldn't have started any better. You had the
- 9:00Speaker 4: crowd going absolutely nuts after that long weather delay, which
- 9:03Speaker 4: I love to get pushed back to 9 plus.
- 9:05Speaker 6: O'clock or whatever.
- 9:06Speaker 1: I know. It was a good late game.
- 9:08Speaker 4: And you get a pick on the second play of
- 9:09Speaker 4: the game from Leavitt, and you're in plus territory in
- 9:12Speaker 4: every opportunity, and you still get points. You go up 3-0,
- 9:14Speaker 4: but it kind of calms the crowd. You couldn't get
- 9:16Speaker 4: a first down, but you got points. You calm the
- 9:18Speaker 4: crowd down a little bit. It couldn't have gone better,
- 9:21Speaker 4: and then it just explodes. I mean, they won. The
- 9:24Speaker 4: only bright spot all night was second play of the game.
- 9:25Speaker 1: That was it. That was it. Yeah, it was all
- 9:27Speaker 1: downhill from there.
- 9:28Speaker 2: So that begs this question, though. Could LSU be that good?
- 9:34Speaker 1: Well, I mean... You hated the way I voted when
- 9:37Speaker 1: I was an AP voter. I would have LSU my
- 9:38Speaker 1: number one team in the country today.
- 9:40Speaker 6: I got it right here.
- 9:41Speaker 2: How high does LSU go in the AP poll?
- 9:43Speaker 1: What were they, 11? Is that where they were?
- 9:44Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 9:45Speaker 1: I think it was 11. Where were they last week?
- 9:47Speaker 6: Yeah, I think it was 11.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Of course you're ready to go with that. Look at that.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Queued up, ready to go.
- 9:50Speaker 6: They were 11.
- 9:50Speaker 2: How high do you put them? I'd have them number one.
- 9:53Speaker 1: And look. Wait, wait, wait. Put it back. Tight shot, Brown.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Say that again. If I were an Associated Press voter
- 10:03Speaker 1: and the way I voted was to react to what
- 10:06Speaker 1: I see on the field. We do all these preseason
- 10:08Speaker 1: votes based on what we think is going to happen.
- 10:11Speaker 1: When we finally see it happen, why would I not
- 10:13Speaker 1: react to what I saw on the field? LSU would
- 10:16Speaker 1: be my number one team in the country today.
- 10:18Speaker 4: Okay, well, depending on where you had teams like Ohio
- 10:21Speaker 4: State and Georgia, what did they do to go backwards?
- 10:23Speaker 1: They played crappy teams.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Well, so did LSU.
- 10:27Speaker 1: I mean, they did. They played a crappy team.
- 10:30Speaker 2: If you did blind box scores, I mean, just looking
- 10:33Speaker 2: at LSU, 38-8 first downs, 1 of 13 on third downs.
- 10:38Speaker 4: I mean, this looks like... Tennessee State, Georgia.
- 10:42Speaker 1: It really does. It does.
- 10:44Speaker 2: I mean, the final score blended in nicely. 51-10 LSU
- 10:47Speaker 2: over Clemson. 51-0 Oklahoma over Utah. 48-10 Alabama over East Carolina.
- 10:53Speaker 2: If it wasn't Clemson, if that was the Citadel, I
- 10:55Speaker 2: can't say the Citadel, they won.
- 10:57Speaker 1: They won. They're the team that beat Charlotte.
- 10:59Speaker 4: No, but I've got the defending champion, Indiana Hoosiers, minus 40.5,
- 11:02Speaker 4: and they can't get home against North Texas completely replenishing
- 11:05Speaker 4: their their entire roster, but LSU can cover the 40
- 11:08Speaker 4: and a half at home against Clemson.
- 11:10Speaker 1: In the first half, basically. I mean, it was, it
- 11:12Speaker 1: was an embarrassing beat down. Like there were so many
- 11:14Speaker 1: times in this state where Alabama fans had to live
- 11:19Speaker 1: through members of the national media, declaring the Saban dynasty over.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Is this the funeral of the Saban dynasty? By the way,
- 11:24Speaker 1: there was never a funeral. It's final game was in
- 11:26Speaker 1: the Rose bowl and a semifinal game. There was never
- 11:30Speaker 1: a funeral of the Saban dynasty. So when I say
- 11:33Speaker 1: things like I'm about to say, Alabama fans are like, yeah,
- 11:35Speaker 1: I've heard it. It never looked like this. That was
- 11:37Speaker 1: the funeral for Clemson football.
- 11:39Speaker 2: It looked like that only one game, and it was Clemson, ironically,
- 11:43Speaker 2: beating Alabama in that national championship.
- 11:45Speaker 1: In the national championship.
- 11:46Speaker 6: Game, not a season.
- 11:47Speaker 1: I agree.
- 11:48Speaker 4: If South Carolina was relevant, I think their fans could
- 11:51Speaker 4: actually throw a funeral.
- 11:52Speaker 1: That's right. This is a funeral for Clemson football.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Give me the AP poll again. Let's ask Lance the question.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Brown would have LSU number one. Where would you put?
- 12:00Speaker 2: I mean, they would definitely jump. They would be top five.
- 12:03Speaker 4: Again, I think they've got a test coming up in
- 12:05Speaker 4: a couple of weeks. There's probably people that disagree when
- 12:07Speaker 4: they watch Pete Golding's defense, and I was going to
- 12:09Speaker 4: shift to that game next. But I would have them
- 12:12Speaker 4: in the top five. I'd put them five, I think.
- 12:14Speaker 4: You'd drop Oregon, though, right? Yeah, I would drop Oregon.
- 12:19Speaker 4: I'd probably drop Notre Dame a little bit. I mean,
- 12:23Speaker 4: the second half looked great.
- 12:25Speaker 2: I would probably go Ohio State, Georgia, Notre Dame, and
- 12:29Speaker 2: that's where I'd consider LSU. But Miami probably would be
- 12:34Speaker 2: four for me.
- 12:34Speaker 1: LSU five.
- 12:35Speaker 4: I would probably put Notre Dame. I'd keep Notre Dame
- 12:39Speaker 4: where they are. I would go Ohio State, Georgia.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Miami looked good. Yeah, they did. They dominated Stanford.
- 12:46Speaker 4: I think I'm going to put my– I mean, Oklahoma's
- 12:48Speaker 4: defense is crazy, crazy good. Now– This is a weird
- 12:52Speaker 4: dynamic setting because you guys don't want my contrarian and
- 12:54Speaker 4: the world. Brown takes me to the world. It's going
- 12:57Speaker 4: to be on Oklahoma.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Because I want to go to your game there.
- 13:01Speaker 4: I just don't know how Michigan is going to move
- 13:04Speaker 4: the football. But anyway, I would have Miami close to
- 13:07Speaker 4: top five, and I probably would have LSU number five.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I would too. But not number one, Brown.
- 13:12Speaker 4: So are we going to shift to that game?
- 13:13Speaker 1: Yeah, we're going to have number five.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Let me tell everybody about Hard Rock Bets real quick,
- 13:16Speaker 2: and we'll go to LT's game next. Hey, we love
- 13:19Speaker 2: our partnership with Hard Rock Bets. And you may know
- 13:22Speaker 2: that Hard Rock is a name that's been out there
- 13:24Speaker 2: for a year, but Hard Rock Bet Sportsbook app. It's
- 13:27Speaker 2: available now in Florida, the only legal sportsbook in Florida.
- 13:32Speaker 2: So that makes it the most trustworthy option all over
- 13:34Speaker 2: the place. Hard Rock Bet available in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia.
- 13:41Speaker 2: And with football being back, they've got new features. They've
- 13:44Speaker 2: got the app update and a lot of promos. They've

- 14:02Speaker 4: In prize money.
- 14:03Speaker 2: I'd take the Bengals this week if I was you
- 14:05Speaker 2: against the Buccaneers, but that's just me. The best place
- 14:07Speaker 2: to get more information and to sign up is at
- 14:10Speaker 2: hardrock.bet backslash clay, hardrock.bet.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Backslash Clay.
- 14:16Speaker 2: LT selects our second game to discuss.
- 14:18Speaker 4: Boy, you're talking about a tale of two halves. It
- 14:20Speaker 4: looked like the defenses, like Keen Holtz was not going
- 14:24Speaker 4: to be maybe the worst quarterback in the Brum four-year
- 14:28Speaker 4: era at Louisville. His fourth starting quarterback in four years.
- 14:31Speaker 4: They couldn't get anything going offensively. Trinidad made multiple bad decisions,
- 14:36Speaker 4: a fumble, terrible interception. And then in the second.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Half, it was.
- 14:41Speaker 4: the most entertaining 30 minutes we've seen early on in
- 14:45Speaker 4: college football.
- 14:45Speaker 1: No, it was the best 30 minutes of the season
- 14:46Speaker 1: so far.
- 14:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I thought Trinidad was fabulous. I thought Ole Miss'
- 14:50Speaker 4: defense looked fast. The secondary just– I don't know what
- 14:54Speaker 4: they were doing. They couldn't tackle. The coverage was bad.
- 14:57Speaker 4: But my biggest takeaway, Keen Holtz is the best quarterback
- 15:01Speaker 4: that Brum's had. I think Keen Holtz is– Like, if
- 15:04Speaker 4: I was playing futures, I might put him in front
- 15:06Speaker 4: of Chambliss. I think he can be that good.
- 15:09Speaker 2: His touch on some of those passes was really, really good.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought Lugenbill, what he said to you about
- 15:13Speaker 1: him was interesting, that Braum always likes these older guys,
- 15:16Speaker 1: but he finally found a mobile older guy, right? That's
- 15:19Speaker 1: kind of.
- 15:19Speaker 2: Well, you listen to the story, and I think McDonough
- 15:21Speaker 2: and McElroy did a great job. McElroy on his game,
- 15:24Speaker 2: calling a couple of plays before they happened. But McDonough said,
- 15:29Speaker 2: and McElroy, they both told the story at different times,
- 15:31Speaker 2: that when they were when keen holes was in the
- 15:33Speaker 2: portal he told braum he's like are you gonna let
- 15:35Speaker 2: me run like apparently was not part of the plan
- 15:39Speaker 2: for ryan day was him to run and braum was
- 15:41Speaker 2: like well i want to make you a good passer
- 15:43Speaker 2: he's like but i want to run and boy the
- 15:44Speaker 2: kid can run he can yeah i mean the first
- 15:46Speaker 2: half it looked like okay this is a typical south
- 15:49Speaker 2: dakota high school guy that dominated and now you know
- 15:52Speaker 2: he's playing with all these athletes and there's no way
- 15:54Speaker 2: but My gosh, I'm trying to even do a comp
- 15:57Speaker 2: for the guy.
- 15:57Speaker 1: I mean, he had to shake the rust off. He
- 15:59Speaker 1: hadn't started since high school. No, it is crazy.
- 16:01Speaker 4: Yeah, Collin Klein at his height at Kansas State.
- 16:04Speaker 1: I mean, he– Brom can just coach quarterbacks. I mean,
- 16:06Speaker 1: pure and simple, Brom can coach quarterbacks. But if you've
- 16:09Speaker 1: got a bad quarterback, you look.
- 16:10Speaker 4: At that, you're like– and I bet Ohio State fans
- 16:12Speaker 4: are probably like, ah, we like saying a lot, but man.
- 16:15Speaker 1: Here's what's weird about that game. Like, I had said
- 16:17Speaker 1: my concern for Ole Miss is the offense is going
- 16:20Speaker 1: to fall off after Kiffin and Weiss, and boy, in
- 16:22Speaker 1: the first half, I'm like, Well, I got that right.
- 16:24Speaker 1: I didn't get much right in the preseason, but I
- 16:25Speaker 1: got that right. That offense has fallen off. You got
- 16:27Speaker 1: new play callers and everything. And it just didn't seem
- 16:29Speaker 1: to jive. There was no... You're right. Chambliss did not
- 16:32Speaker 1: look like himself. Now, Keewan Lacey got hurt. So that,
- 16:35Speaker 1: you know, obviously they can't help that.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Bruised knee shouldn't be long term.
- 16:38Speaker 1: But he was out of the rest of the game.
- 16:41Speaker 1: But I was like, man, I... I was right about that,
- 16:43Speaker 1: that offense. And then you go to the second half,
- 16:44Speaker 1: and I'm like, wait a minute, their offense is fine.
- 16:47Speaker 1: What is wrong with Ole Miss' defense? Like, the defense
- 16:50Speaker 1: is the issue for Ole Miss.
- 16:51Speaker 4: The explosive plays they gave up. You just didn't see
- 16:54Speaker 4: that with the Ole Miss defense last year. And I'll
- 16:56Speaker 4: tell you, for Vane Kiffin, the only thing that went
- 16:58Speaker 4: wrong this weekend– the only.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Thing you intentionally went vain the.
- 17:04Speaker 4: Only thing that went wrong was Ole Miss winning this
- 17:06Speaker 4: game because you know that dickhead was pulling against him oh.
- 17:09Speaker 1: You know he was sure he was dialed right in.
- 17:12Speaker 2: Would not have surprised me if he sent some some
- 17:14Speaker 2: cliff notes to uh Braum in the office.
- 17:17Speaker 4: Yeah and the good news for I think Louisville's gonna
- 17:19Speaker 4: be really good like people are already anointing hey Miami's
- 17:21Speaker 4: got this especially with how Bad Clemson look. I think
- 17:25Speaker 4: Virginia and Louisville are going to be right there with Miami.
- 17:27Speaker 1: Having watched as much ACC as I've watched, whatever that is,
- 17:31Speaker 1: right now, if you're going to head, I'd say Miami
- 17:33Speaker 1: and Louisville play for the conference championship.
- 17:35Speaker 4: Yeah, I would go Miami, Virginia, but it's not going
- 17:37Speaker 4: to surprise me. Louisville is right there. Because Louisville's got
- 17:41Speaker 4: the better quarterback.
- 17:42Speaker 2: Back to week zero, NC State. got embarrassed by Virginia,
- 17:46Speaker 2: but NC State was supposed to be good. So just
- 17:48Speaker 2: like we asked about LSU, the question could be, is
- 17:51Speaker 2: Virginia really that good?
- 17:53Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 17:53Speaker 4: Louisville and Virginia don't play each other. So this is
- 17:56Speaker 4: going to be interesting. I mean, we've seen weird tiebreakers
- 17:59Speaker 4: before in the ACC. So right now I would say
- 18:02Speaker 4: those are the two best. Now, we'll get a look
- 18:04Speaker 4: at SMU and Florida State tonight. We'll see how that
- 18:06Speaker 4: game plays out.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Yeah, point spread on that one's a little fishy.
- 18:10Speaker 4: Yeah, it's gone up to three. It's ticked up a
- 18:11Speaker 4: little bit. This was a very, very public weekend, though.
- 18:14Speaker 4: I got my dick handed to me on Saturday. Bad
- 18:19Speaker 4: three and five.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Is that what's playing on the ground here?
- 18:21Speaker 4: No, I can't find it. Some bitch is out there somewhere.
- 18:26Speaker 4: With all that said, big play coming up tonight. Things
- 18:29Speaker 4: I wish I'd never heard before. This ACC is going
- 18:35Speaker 4: to be– It's going to be wild. I was going
- 18:37Speaker 4: to say fun, but wild is probably better.
- 18:39Speaker 1: Yeah, this is not my game. My game, we're going
- 18:41Speaker 1: to have to take a break before we get to
- 18:43Speaker 1: my game. But Miami was just dominant over Stanford. I mean,
- 18:46Speaker 1: everything you thought– Is that yours?
- 18:47Speaker 6: No.
- 18:48Speaker 1: I said we're going to have to get my game
- 18:49Speaker 1: after the break.
- 18:49Speaker 4: Yeah, but that's how bad Stanford is.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Stanford's awful, but– You let me worry about the breaks.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Give me your game when you get to it. I mean,
- 18:54Speaker 1: my game's Michigan-Western Michigan. We can't do that in this time. Yes,
- 18:57Speaker 1: we can. It'll take a second.
- 18:59Speaker 4: Well, let me go back to– Ah! She knows real quick.
- 19:02Speaker 4: Jack Plummer, no. Miller Moss, no. Tyler Shuck, no. I mean,
- 19:07Speaker 4: he's got him a quarterback now. Now, whether or not
- 19:09Speaker 4: they can figure out the defense, I think more of
- 19:11Speaker 4: that was Trinidad and how good Trinidad is. As bad
- 19:14Speaker 4: as he was in the first half, he was that
- 19:16Speaker 4: good in the second half. Louisville's going to be a
- 19:18Speaker 4: fun watch. And back to your top 25 voting, there's
- 19:21Speaker 4: no way Louisville falls out of the top 25 for me.
- 19:25Speaker 1: I might bump them up.
- 19:26Speaker 2: I would actually move them up. Nine runs by Trinidad.
- 19:29Speaker 2: 14 by Lincoln Keenholz. Levitt ran 12 times, though. Any
- 19:35Speaker 2: concern about Levitt's health all season long for LSU?
- 19:38Speaker 4: Yeah, he's a big guy. But, I mean, you talk
- 19:41Speaker 4: about running with just wild abandonment. Like, the guy, he's
- 19:45Speaker 4: not afraid. I mean, you saw him down by the
- 19:47Speaker 4: goal line just doing tumbles and flipping into the end zone. Like,
- 19:50Speaker 4: he's reckless.
- 19:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, coming off an injury, by the way.
- 19:53Speaker 1: That's what worries you.
- 19:54Speaker 2: And we'll talk Keelan Russell later on, Alabama's debut. But
- 19:57Speaker 2: he wasn't a slider either. He was a run into
- 20:01Speaker 2: the tackle, into the forest. And some of these guys,
- 20:04Speaker 2: you need to learn to slide. It's a long, long season.
- 20:07Speaker 2: Brown wants to take a break before we talk about
- 20:09Speaker 2: the craziness in Ann Arbor. So that'll be next up
- 20:13Speaker 2: and we'll get to Bama and Auburn and got a
- 20:17Speaker 2: fun UCLA Cal game. Oregon got scared.
- 20:21Speaker 1: We're going to go through it all with you today.
- 20:23Speaker 2: This is the next round presented by Hard Rock Bets
- 20:26Speaker 2: right here on Sport and State. If you're new to
- 20:30Speaker 2: the show, my wife is not a sports fan. So
- 20:34Speaker 2: when she hears me say man, Lance Taylor got robbed.
- 20:38Speaker 2: And she says, was it a break-in? Or was he
- 20:42Speaker 2: out on town?
- 20:43Speaker 1: I was like, no.
- 20:44Speaker 5: No, no.
- 20:44Speaker 2: He coaches Western Michigan. Not the Lance I work with.
- 20:48Speaker 2: But Lance Taylor, Western Michigan. I mean, America cheers for
- 20:54Speaker 2: little old Western Michigan. Those type teams to beat the
- 20:57Speaker 2: big boys all the time. And here you have Western
- 20:58Speaker 2: Michigan and Michigan playing at the big house.
- 21:01Speaker 6: And for.
- 21:02Speaker 2: 59 minutes and 59 seconds, or as a lot of
- 21:06Speaker 2: people say, for 60 minutes.
- 21:08Speaker 1: 64.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Western Michigan outplayed Michigan, and they get bailed out with
- 21:11Speaker 2: a second shot at the Hail Mary. I want your reaction,
- 21:14Speaker 2: but let's listen to the sound bite first. This is
- 21:17Speaker 2: what the Big Ten sent out. I will tell you,
- 21:20Speaker 2: I don't know where we are in the moon landing,
- 21:23Speaker 2: but for those people that don't believe we landed on
- 21:26Speaker 2: the moon in 1969, faking a clock and a video.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Is not out of the ramble possibility. But the Big
- 21:35Speaker 2: Ten sent this out, and listen to the discussion here.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Cut 16, Tyler, hit it.
- 21:40Speaker 6: Where's his left foot there? So let's see here. We're
- 21:44Speaker 6: taking a look here.
- 21:44Speaker 8: Okay, he's jumping from out of bounds. So when 18
- 21:48Speaker 8: is touching the football, Jim, do.
- 21:50Speaker 6: You see that?
- 21:50Speaker 1: It's dead when he touches the ball.
- 21:52Speaker 6: When 18's touching the football, we've got one second.
- 21:55Speaker 1: On the clock.
- 21:55Speaker 6: Do you see that? I do. And we've got him Houston,
- 22:04Speaker 6: we have a program for you.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Are you with me?
- 22:05Speaker 6: Yes. Can you hear me, guys?
- 22:07Speaker 8: We are going to put one second on the game clock,
- 22:10Speaker 8: and we're going to have another play from the previous spot, okay?
- 22:14Speaker 1: Okay, so what do you think? I think it's AI.
- 22:16Speaker 1: It's a joke.
- 22:17Speaker 4: I don't even believe it. I mean, look, I'll let
- 22:20Speaker 4: you go, Brown, because this is your game, and then
- 22:22Speaker 4: I will circle back around because I do have opinions
- 22:24Speaker 4: on this.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Okay, so let me just do a couple quick questions
- 22:28Speaker 1: for you two. At what time was that video released? Yesterday?
- 22:33Speaker 2: Well, I mean, they had a statement pretty quick.
- 22:36Speaker 1: They said they were going to have a statement quick.
- 22:40Speaker 1: And then the statement and the video didn't come out
- 22:43Speaker 1: until at least 90 minutes to two hours after the game.
- 22:45Speaker 1: That's right.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Enough time to edit it and recreate it. Hey, that email,
- 22:50Speaker 2: I'm looking at it right now, was sent at 11.48 p.m.
- 22:54Speaker 1: 11.48 p.m. That game ended before 10. Yeah, before 10.
- 22:58Speaker 1: So we're close to two hours. Follow my analogy here.
- 23:05Speaker 1: When you have an officer involved shooting. Now listen to me.
- 23:10Speaker 1: When you have an officer involved shooting. It's comparable, right?
- 23:13Speaker 1: Hang on. I'm not making a comparison. I said an analogy.
- 23:16Speaker 1: When you have an officer involved shooting. If the body
- 23:19Speaker 1: cam footage isn't out by the time the smoke dies,
- 23:21Speaker 1: you know you've got problems with the body cam footage.
- 23:24Speaker 1: If it's all clear, they're like, here's the body cam footage.
- 23:26Speaker 2: Everybody watch. Here's what happened. They definitely want to look
- 23:29Speaker 2: at it first.
- 23:29Speaker 1: If the body cam footage ain't out in 30 seconds,
- 23:32Speaker 1: you know that is bad body cam footage.
- 23:33Speaker 2: A lot of people believe that if it's bad body cam,
- 23:37Speaker 2: for some reason the body cam wasn't working.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll release that when we can.
- 23:41Speaker 4: The mic cut out.
- 23:42Speaker 1: If you're... If the Big Ten had that video that
- 23:45Speaker 1: exonerated the Big Ten when the entire world was saying
- 23:49Speaker 1: the Big Ten fixed this game, they've got that video
- 23:52Speaker 1: out in like 30 seconds. Like, how did they not
- 23:54Speaker 1: have that video out before Lance Taylor even took the
- 23:59Speaker 1: microphone at the podium?
- 24:00Speaker 4: Yeah, this makes no sense. I mean, the Big Ten,
- 24:03Speaker 4: you know, we finally anoint them the best conference and
- 24:06Speaker 4: doing everything right. The Rutgers thing was an embarrassment, but
- 24:08Speaker 4: it was Rutgers. And then now you get this. I mean,
- 24:12Speaker 4: just imagine if you flip this around. Like, is there
- 24:15Speaker 4: any chance that if Western Michigan is in the same situation,
- 24:18Speaker 4: they get another?
- 24:19Speaker 1: I think we all know the answer to that question.
- 24:20Speaker 2: I want you to play it again because you're dead on, Lance,
- 24:23Speaker 2: because you know what you don't hear is what kind
- 24:27Speaker 2: of video.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Evidence you have to have?
- 24:31Speaker 4: Irrefutable. Irrefutable.
- 24:33Speaker 2: You never hear is this. Guys, I don't know if
- 24:35Speaker 2: it's a conclusion. You never hear any of that discussion.
- 24:38Speaker 2: They are working their asses off to figure out how
- 24:41Speaker 2: there's a second level. And listen how hard they're working.
- 24:44Speaker 1: How many people are.
- 24:45Speaker 2: Working to find a second?
- 24:48Speaker 1: Listen.
- 24:49Speaker 8: Where's the left one there?
- 24:51Speaker 6: Yeah, look at program. Let's see here. We're taking a
- 24:53Speaker 6: look here.
- 24:54Speaker 8: Okay he's jumping out of bounds so when 18 is
- 24:57Speaker 8: touching the foot now now you see that it's dead
- 25:00Speaker 8: when he touches the ball when 18 is touching the
- 25:02Speaker 8: football we've got one second on the clock i do
- 25:06Speaker 8: see everybody.
- 25:07Speaker 1: See one second yeah now where did this clock come
- 25:10Speaker 1: from jim.
- 25:11Speaker 4: Shut up by the way and by the way i
- 25:13Speaker 4: don't think jim knew this rule i think they went
- 25:16Speaker 4: back and they were like well how could this be
- 25:18Speaker 4: a dead ball well if he's out of bounds and
- 25:20Speaker 4: then he touches it now this is the rule right
- 25:23Speaker 4: i think we all agree as messed up as the
- 25:25Speaker 4: acc is and as non-competitive as they are at times
- 25:29Speaker 4: their transparency when it comes to the replay like if
- 25:31Speaker 4: we would have gone to that live they wouldn't have
- 25:33Speaker 4: been able to get out of that that's probably one
- 25:35Speaker 4: reason they other leagues don't know you.
- 25:38Speaker 1: Should there should not be another snap Big 10, Big 12, SEC,
- 25:42Speaker 1: or Notre Dame football without live replay on TV. The
- 25:45Speaker 1: Big 10, this is the tipping point. When you have
- 25:48Speaker 1: a fixed job like this, when the Big 10 fixes
- 25:50Speaker 1: a game to bail out one of their elite schools
- 25:54Speaker 1: because they're about to have one of the most embarrassing
- 25:56Speaker 1: losses in school history, and that school has already taken
- 25:58Speaker 1: on plenty of embarrassment. The last thing that school needed
- 26:01Speaker 1: was another embarrassing moment in their football program, and this
- 26:05Speaker 1: time it was going to happen on the field, and
- 26:06Speaker 1: the Big 10 completely bailed them out of it. Once
- 26:09Speaker 1: you get to that, it's a tipping point. You've lost
- 26:12Speaker 1: college football because the Big Ten has lost the trust
- 26:15Speaker 1: of the American public.
- 26:16Speaker 4: I will say, though, I think this goes in a
- 26:18Speaker 4: very positive direction for Lance Taylor and Western Michigan.
- 26:20Speaker 6: I agree.
- 26:21Speaker 4: From their president to the MAC commissioner.
- 26:25Speaker 2: Well, the MAAC commissioner had to say that because you
- 26:27Speaker 2: know how much money they make every year playing Big
- 26:30Speaker 2: Ten teams.
- 26:30Speaker 1: That's why somebody on Twitter was like, well, look what
- 26:31Speaker 1: the MAAC commissioner said. I was like, the MAAC commissioner
- 26:34Speaker 1: knows they're out of business without the Big Ten. Last
- 26:36Speaker 1: thing they're going to do is just go blowtorch to.
- 26:38Speaker 6: The Big Ten.
- 26:38Speaker 1: They're basically a Big Ten subsidiary.
- 26:40Speaker 6: Exactly.
- 26:41Speaker 2: And really, he was going to have to try to
- 26:42Speaker 2: beg the Big Ten to keep playing them because they
- 26:44Speaker 2: were about to– they'd already– UMass had already walked in
- 26:47Speaker 2: and spanked Rutgers on national television. This was about to
- 26:50Speaker 2: be another Mac over Big Ten win.
- 26:51Speaker 4: But watch out. I mean, I think that this team,
- 26:53Speaker 4: you saw how they grinded it out. I mean, Lance Taylor,
- 26:56Speaker 4: the way he coached in that game, he was playing
- 26:59Speaker 4: to shorten the game. They had four field goals. It
- 27:03Speaker 4: was masterful. Yeah, let's just grind this out. I mean,
- 27:06Speaker 4: that 120-play drive that ended in a field goal to
- 27:08Speaker 4: take the first lead of the game. With all this said,
- 27:11Speaker 4: I think that they're going to win every game going forward,
- 27:13Speaker 4: including Boise coming into their place.
- 27:16Speaker 1: I really believe that. So I think that this is fantastic.
- 27:20Speaker 4: Teams are going to fall in love, or voters and
- 27:22Speaker 4: everybody's going to fall in love with this team because
- 27:24Speaker 4: of what happened to them. So if they're able to go...
- 27:27Speaker 4: Let's just say they beat Boise, go 10-2 and win
- 27:29Speaker 4: the MAAC. I think they're very much in the discussion.
- 27:31Speaker 2: Dude, if they don't lose again and I'm on the committee,
- 27:34Speaker 2: I am counting them as an undefeated team.
- 27:37Speaker 1: I would too, and I would have no problem saying it.
- 27:39Speaker 2: Yeah, and I'd argue with you more than they were arguing.
- 27:41Speaker 1: On that video. Oh, and by the way, you see
- 27:42Speaker 1: his foot, right, Jim?
- 27:43Speaker 4: Back to your voting, Michigan would be out of my
- 27:45Speaker 4: top 25 for sure.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Oh, were they in? Were they in?
- 27:47Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, they were 16.
- 27:49Speaker 1: Michigan was 16? Yeah. There's more than 15 better teams
- 27:52Speaker 1: than Michigan, I can promise you.
- 27:54Speaker 4: I'll tell you this, man. For my Oklahoma having a
- 27:56Speaker 4: feeling they're going to have a great season, dangerous spot
- 27:59Speaker 4: for Oklahoma this weekend.
- 28:01Speaker 1: I mean, it is.
- 28:01Speaker 4: Do you guys not agree?
- 28:02Speaker 6: I don't. I don't, Lance.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Underwood is.
- 28:06Speaker 4: I mean, Underwood, he can't complete passes. Before the two
- 28:10Speaker 4: completions to end the game, he was, let me get this.
- 28:15Speaker 1: One of which is a Hail Mary.
- 28:17Speaker 4: 10 of 20, 95 yards, zero touchdowns, one pick.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Against Western Michigan. I mean, a ton of respect for
- 28:23Speaker 1: Lance Taylor and Western Michigan, but that's Western Michigan.
- 28:25Speaker 4: But does it make any sense? They upgraded their coaching staff, right?
- 28:28Speaker 4: This is year two of Underwood.
- 28:30Speaker 6: They did.
- 28:30Speaker 1: They did on paper.
- 28:32Speaker 2: They did on paper, but you have to admit, As
- 28:35Speaker 2: that game went on, that's the first time Kyle Whittingham ever.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Looked his age.
- 28:38Speaker 2: He never looked older. He never looked older than he did.
- 28:41Speaker 2: And at the end, he never looked more lost like
- 28:43Speaker 2: old people usually are. I can say I'm one of them.
- 28:47Speaker 2: He looked lost at the end. And I've said it
- 28:49Speaker 2: all along. He looks like a placeholder.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Yeah. I never believed you until I watched that game.
- 28:55Speaker 1: And I'm like, I don't know that he can coach
- 28:57Speaker 1: a year with Underwood at quarterback. I mean, it may
- 28:58Speaker 1: kill him.
- 29:00Speaker 2: I mean, they are staring six and six, five and seven.
- 29:04Speaker 1: Right down the barrel.
- 29:05Speaker 4: If it's not for J.J. Buchanan, the grab that he
- 29:08Speaker 4: made to put him in the situation for the Hail Mary.
- 29:11Speaker 4: But I will tell you, back on the clock operation,
- 29:13Speaker 4: I don't know what you guys thought, but I'm sitting
- 29:14Speaker 4: there thinking to myself, Michigan's supposed to get the benefit
- 29:17Speaker 4: of the doubt on their home clock operator. They took
- 29:20Speaker 4: too many seconds off. Now they added it back to
- 29:22Speaker 4: nine seconds, but I think it should have been at ten.
- 29:24Speaker 4: I'm not saying that... This thing played out like karma-wise
- 29:28Speaker 4: for Michigan because of that, but there should have been
- 29:31Speaker 4: more time on the clock in my opinion.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Most game operations, there's a striped shirt that runs the
- 29:37Speaker 2: clock on the sidelines.
- 29:38Speaker 6: Right.
- 29:39Speaker 2: There's not an official on the field, but there's a.
- 29:41Speaker 2: a guy with a very bulky cord that moves up
- 29:43Speaker 2: and down and starts and stops the clock. Is that
- 29:46Speaker 2: the way they still do it?
- 29:46Speaker 1: I think so. I mean, that's the way I've seen
- 29:48Speaker 1: it done, yeah. That is it.
- 29:49Speaker 4: I mean, that catch by Buchanan was just incredible.
- 29:50Speaker 1: Oh, it's an incredible play. It should have never happened.
- 29:52Speaker 2: It's not like Bryce Underwood's dad is up in the
- 29:53Speaker 2: press box running the old school clock.
- 29:55Speaker 4: But I do think, like all of the equity Michigan
- 29:58Speaker 4: built up with that national championship three years ago is
- 30:00Speaker 4: now gone. You stormed the field over a team in
- 30:03Speaker 4: the MAAC that has never, by the way, never had
- 30:05Speaker 4: a top 20 win in their programs.
- 30:07Speaker 2: Dude, dude, I didn't understand storming the field.
- 30:10Speaker 1: I don't understand it.
- 30:11Speaker 4: I understand standing in the crowd going, holy shit, what
- 30:14Speaker 4: just happened with your body?
- 30:15Speaker 1: We got away.
- 30:15Speaker 4: With filming like this. But running down on the field
- 30:18Speaker 4: is insane.
- 30:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I will say this. Lance Taylor played football at Alabama.
- 30:22Speaker 1: We've always been a fan of his. Lance follows the show.
- 30:25Speaker 6: I think.
- 30:29Speaker 1: If I'm hiring a coach, I watch that. Aside from
- 30:32Speaker 1: how it ended and how he handled it, just the
- 30:35Speaker 1: way he handled himself on the sidelines and the way
- 30:38Speaker 1: he coached that game, it was a masterful coaching job. Now,
- 30:40Speaker 1: I would say we texted in the group text. I
- 30:43Speaker 1: don't know that I kicked that last field goal. I'm
- 30:45Speaker 1: not kicking that last field goal. I thought you should
- 30:47Speaker 1: have gone for it and tried to end the game
- 30:50Speaker 1: right there. I get why he did it. It puts
- 30:53Speaker 1: you up by more than a field goal, and you
- 30:56Speaker 1: don't think Michigan could score a touchdown, which they couldn't.
- 31:00Speaker 1: I get why he kicked it, but all it does
- 31:02Speaker 1: is bring in a block kick return for a touchdown
- 31:04Speaker 1: to beat you. and then Michigan being able to at
- 31:07Speaker 1: least get the ball back in hand and do something,
- 31:08Speaker 1: which they did.
- 31:09Speaker 4: I had switched that game to the big because we
- 31:13Speaker 4: had people over, and I was like, you guys have
- 31:15Speaker 4: got to hear, he's got one of the more interesting accents,
- 31:18Speaker 4: Lance Taylor. So after this, this post-game interview is going
- 31:21Speaker 4: to be great, and then obviously what happened, and then
- 31:23Speaker 4: everybody's cussing. I can't believe this.
- 31:25Speaker 2: But at the end on that fourth down, if you
- 31:29Speaker 2: kick the field goal and it goes through, then you're
- 31:31Speaker 2: up five, touchdown still beats you, which is why I
- 31:33Speaker 2: wouldn't have done it. You get the field goal blocked,
- 31:35Speaker 2: and it's returned the other way.
- 31:37Speaker 1: It's game over.
- 31:38Speaker 2: If you miss the field goal, you're still in the
- 31:40Speaker 2: same situation as if you go for it and you don't.
- 31:43Speaker 2: I mean, kickers miss field goals all the time. All
- 31:45Speaker 2: the time in college, yeah.
- 31:46Speaker 4: That kid was three of three, though.
- 31:48Speaker 1: I know. That kid was nails that night.
- 31:51Speaker 2: I would have ended it there. And, no, I haven't
- 31:55Speaker 2: heard anybody talk about this. Listen, who rushed one guy
- 32:02Speaker 2: and they had 10 back and got beat with a
- 32:03Speaker 2: Hail Mary?
- 32:04Speaker 1: It happened?
- 32:04Speaker 4: No, it was Thursday night, Illinois and UAB.
- 32:07Speaker 1: Yeah, okay. It was going to half. UAB rushed one guy.
- 32:09Speaker 1: That's right. Hail Mary gave him a touchdown. Can't do that.
- 32:12Speaker 2: But if you're going to put six at the line,
- 32:14Speaker 2: rush six because they had six at the line on
- 32:17Speaker 2: the second go-around. I think they had three the first time.
- 32:20Speaker 4: Yeah, and if you're not rushing on six, what are
- 32:22Speaker 4: you doing?
- 32:22Speaker 1: That's right. Two dropped back.
- 32:24Speaker 2: Well, you're not dropping back in time to get to
- 32:26Speaker 2: the end zone to help out.
- 32:27Speaker 4: Yeah, and the numbers aren't even at that point.
- 32:29Speaker 1: That's right.
- 32:29Speaker 2: If you've got six on the line, rush six. You
- 32:31Speaker 2: don't have two drop out. You're not trying to fool
- 32:33Speaker 2: anybody at that point.
- 32:34Speaker 1: It's a hell man. Underwood got popped on the board.
- 32:36Speaker 4: Oh, the pressure was great. It was just, again, it
- 32:38Speaker 4: was an incredible grab. And, you know, Underwood even said
- 32:42Speaker 4: it on that first toss. He was like, I thought
- 32:44Speaker 4: the game was over. I saw nothing but zeros.
- 32:46Speaker 1: But you knew it. Like, my wife... was that was
- 32:50Speaker 1: the point of the night she was downstairs. And for
- 32:51Speaker 1: some reason, my daughter had come downstairs and I'm like,
- 32:54Speaker 1: Hey guys, top right TV, most exciting playing football, Hail Mary.
- 32:58Speaker 1: And then it goes incomplete. And then everybody else goes
- 33:00Speaker 1: back to what they're doing. We still had on LSU
- 33:02Speaker 1: Clemson for some reason. And I noticed everything happening. I
- 33:06Speaker 1: never moved it to the main. I wish I'd moved
- 33:07Speaker 1: it to the main screen. Oh, they're going to get
- 33:09Speaker 1: another play. I said, I don't, I said, and I
- 33:12Speaker 1: told Jennifer, I go, this is terrible news for West
- 33:14Speaker 1: Western Michigan. She had picked up on the Lance Taylor
- 33:16Speaker 1: thing too. Right. I said, it's terrible news for Lance Taylor.
- 33:18Speaker 1: She goes, why? I said, He's gotten a second bite
- 33:21Speaker 1: at the apple. You never want that second Hail Mary.
- 33:22Speaker 1: She goes, Ryan, he threw the first one in the
- 33:24Speaker 1: first row. I go, but he won't make that mistake again.
- 33:27Speaker 1: This one will be underthrown, if anything.
- 33:29Speaker 2: 20 kilometers to your right.
- 33:31Speaker 1: Dial that back in. This one may not make it
- 33:33Speaker 1: to the end zone. He ain't going to overthrow it again.
- 33:36Speaker 1: I think that's why it was complete.
- 33:37Speaker 6: He threw it a little short.
- 33:37Speaker 1: I agree.
- 33:38Speaker 4: Yeah, I had a weird feeling.
- 33:40Speaker 1: Oh, I know.
- 33:40Speaker 6: I did too.
- 33:41Speaker 1: When they got the second bite, I was like, this
- 33:42Speaker 1: is bad news. I even said it out loud to Jennifer.
- 33:44Speaker 1: I go, this is bad news for other Lance Taylor.
- 33:46Speaker 4: Back to what we heard from John Summerall a couple
- 33:49Speaker 4: of years ago. The first time we ever had him on,
- 33:51Speaker 4: we asked him about the Appalachian State Hail Mary against
- 33:55Speaker 4: Troy in the walk-off. And he said, without that, I
- 33:57Speaker 4: don't think we regroup as a team. Like Western Michigan,
- 34:00Speaker 4: I don't think they would have had that problem anyway.
- 34:01Speaker 4: I think they are super focused. You heard about the offseason.
- 34:04Speaker 4: They retained a lot of their great players, how hard
- 34:06Speaker 4: they worked in the offseason to have a special season.
- 34:09Speaker 4: But it's them against the world now. Mac better watch out.
- 34:14Speaker 2: Crockett coffee in a second. I had to grab me
- 34:17Speaker 2: some Crockett coffee and sit back and enjoy social media
- 34:20Speaker 2: after this ending because people were as bad as social
- 34:24Speaker 2: media can be sometimes. There are moments it's fantastic. And
- 34:28Speaker 2: we have several things off of this game. Forrester, just
- 34:31Speaker 2: give me the first one. Just pick any of them.
- 34:34Speaker 2: I think we have three things here. It's a remarkable stat.
- 34:37Speaker 2: It's my favorite one from Brian Fagan. Prior to Western Michigan,
- 34:41Speaker 2: college football teams were 110,352-0 when leading after the end
- 34:47Speaker 2: of regulation, dating back to 1869. Dating back.
- 34:51Speaker 4: That's a hell of a percentage.
- 34:54Speaker 1: I like it.
- 34:54Speaker 2: That's every game ever played. Great research from Brian there.
- 34:57Speaker 2: Give me the next one. The NCAA has now introduced
- 35:01Speaker 2: stoppage time, just like we had in World Cup soccer.
- 35:05Speaker 2: Plus one second, please. That's a fantastic AI. It's tremendous.
- 35:10Speaker 2: This was a Bryce Underwood got killed. What, $ 15 million
- 35:14Speaker 2: bought you in 1803 versus what it buys you in 2026.
- 35:21Speaker 2: America for $ 11. 5 million was able to buy all of
- 35:24Speaker 2: the Louisiana purchase.
- 35:26Speaker 1: God, Bryce Underwood. How did they get conned into paying
- 35:29Speaker 1: that kind of money for him? And we've all seen
- 35:30Speaker 1: these signs. LSU was going to do it, by the way. Yeah.
- 35:33Speaker 1: We've all seen these.
- 35:34Speaker 2: Signs traveling across state lines. When you're driving into the
- 35:37Speaker 2: state of Michigan, into Ann Arbor, they've got signs up now.
- 35:40Speaker 2: Entering Ann Arbor, please set your clock back one second.
- 35:44Speaker 1: Yeah, that's pretty good.
- 35:45Speaker 2: A lot of fun on social media. You know what's crazy?
- 35:47Speaker 4: And I know as we move forward this week, we'll
- 35:49Speaker 4: get to this. But Western Michigan is just a poor, poor,
- 35:53Speaker 4: poor man's Oklahoma. So Bryce Underwood is about to see
- 35:57Speaker 4: Western Michigan as far as discipline, coaching. He's about to
- 36:02Speaker 4: see that on steroids coming up this week. And like,
- 36:07Speaker 4: how do they do anything to, to have any kind
- 36:11Speaker 4: of production, you know, as far as offensive production against that.
- 36:15Speaker 4: But I mean, the number's only four and a half.
- 36:18Speaker 1: No way. It's four and a half. Open at five
- 36:21Speaker 1: and a half. It's down to four and a half.
- 36:22Speaker 4: I think it's four and a half right now.
- 36:24Speaker 6: Again.
- 36:25Speaker 2: So it's gone down a point because so many people
- 36:27Speaker 2: are betting Oklahoma, right?
- 36:29Speaker 1: I mean, unless you've got.
- 36:30Speaker 4: Unless you've got some, you know, big money on the
- 36:32Speaker 4: other side. No, I mean, it's, It's moved because there's
- 36:35Speaker 4: been money on the other side.
- 36:36Speaker 1: There's been money on Michigan?
- 36:37Speaker 4: Yeah. I mean, no, the public money is all over. Like,
- 36:42Speaker 4: amount of tickets, it's all coming on Oklahoma.
- 36:45Speaker 6: Of course it is.
- 36:46Speaker 4: I'm just saying, I think there was some big money
- 36:47Speaker 4: that got popped the other side.
- 36:48Speaker 2: I mean, I will pull out a savings to put
- 36:50Speaker 2: money on Oklahoma this week.
- 36:52Speaker 1: There you go. That's what you wanted to.
- 36:53Speaker 4: Hear right there, Lance.
- 36:54Speaker 2: I mean, would you not?
- 36:57Speaker 4: It actually got up to six and a half. It's
- 36:58Speaker 4: five and a half right now.
- 36:59Speaker 1: I texted Lance as soon as it was over. I said,
- 37:01Speaker 1: I have no clue what the point spread will be.
- 37:04Speaker 1: Because I know he's good at doing that. Here's what
- 37:05Speaker 1: the points spread. I said, I have no clue what
- 37:07Speaker 1: the points spread will be, but it will not matter.
- 37:09Speaker 1: The American public will run to the window. Too bad
- 37:13Speaker 1: on Oklahoma in this game.
- 37:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I would climb over humans to get to the window.
- 37:17Speaker 1: I was like, it will not matter. They could put
- 37:19Speaker 1: the number at 80,000 if they wanted to.
- 37:21Speaker 4: I finally exercised the 11 o'clock demons last year. I
- 37:23Speaker 4: was 0-3 this Saturday.
- 37:25Speaker 6: 11 a.m.
- 37:25Speaker 1: If you're new to the show.
- 37:27Speaker 4: If I wouldn't have played 11 o'clock, I have a
- 37:29Speaker 4: winning weekend. This game's at 11 o'clock coming up this weekend,
- 37:32Speaker 4: so I will stay. I will be on the sidelines
- 37:34Speaker 4: for it. So you're not even considering it. I am
- 37:36Speaker 4: not even considering it. I think Michigan's the right side.
- 37:38Speaker 4: I really do.
- 37:39Speaker 6: No, you do not.
- 37:40Speaker 4: I really do.
- 37:41Speaker 1: And you love Oklahoma, don't you?
- 37:42Speaker 7: I do.
- 37:44Speaker 4: I mean, I think Mateer is really going to struggle
- 37:46Speaker 4: in this game.
- 37:47Speaker 1: He can't struggle more than under one.
- 37:49Speaker 2: He'll still be the best quarterback on the field. He
- 37:53Speaker 2: can run in with his 20-25 thumb and still be
- 37:55Speaker 2: the best quarterback on the field.
- 37:57Speaker 4: You think Venables would have rather had Michigan win this
- 38:00Speaker 4: game or lose it?
- 38:01Speaker 1: I don't think it matters.
- 38:03Speaker 4: I don't think he cares. I think it got more magnified.
- 38:06Speaker 4: Like this game, people would be like, damn, Michigan got upset.
- 38:09Speaker 4: But I think it would not be nearly noticed as
- 38:11Speaker 4: much as it was.
- 38:12Speaker 1: Oklahoma played Friday night. I think Venables turned it off
- 38:15Speaker 1: in the third quarter and said, who we got week three?
- 38:17Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 38:17Speaker 1: So let's move on to week three.
- 38:20Speaker 2: I think Venables was able to– he had both of
- 38:23Speaker 2: these games. He had LSU Clemson on one TV.
- 38:26Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 38:26Speaker 1: And he had Michigan and Western Michigan on the other TV.
- 38:29Speaker 2: And he's like, well, if I go three and nine
- 38:33Speaker 2: here this year at Oklahoma, I know where I can.
- 38:34Speaker 1: Get a job. I can go back to Clemson. Okay.
- 38:38Speaker 4: Seesaw.
- 38:40Speaker 2: Percentage that Michigan wins this game. Percentage that Michigan wins it?
- 38:46Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 38:46Speaker 1: 15%.
- 38:49Speaker 4: Holy hell.
- 38:51Speaker 1: Did you watch Underwood? You watched Oklahoma's defense. I get it.
- 38:55Speaker 1: And you watched Underwood.
- 38:56Speaker 4: There is no way Michigan. By the way, Western Michigan
- 38:58Speaker 4: is a really, really good group 16.
- 39:00Speaker 1: Oh, heck yeah.
- 39:01Speaker 4: Michigan's offense looked horrible. I really believe they thought that
- 39:06Speaker 4: they could go out as a four-touchdown favorite and not
- 39:08Speaker 4: show a lot.
- 39:09Speaker 1: Well, they didn't.
- 39:09Speaker 4: Jason Beck, new offense coordinator.
- 39:11Speaker 1: I agree.
- 39:12Speaker 4: I don't think they're this bad. I think they're bad.
- 39:15Speaker 4: By Michigan standards, but I don't think they're that bad.
- 39:17Speaker 2: The Underwoods have not been exposed more since Fletch was
- 39:21Speaker 2: putting it on their tab at the Country Club.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Okay, I know we'll get to this, too. Underhills.
- 39:26Speaker 4: There is no way you guys would take Auburn neutral
- 39:29Speaker 4: site Michigan, right?
- 39:31Speaker 1: Oh, God, what a terrible offensive game. No, I don't
- 39:34Speaker 1: know about that. I don't know. I mean, it's not
- 39:38Speaker 1: Auburn going to play.
- 39:39Speaker 4: No, the reason I bring this up is I'm talking
- 39:40Speaker 4: about like a middling team right now in the SEC.
- 39:43Speaker 4: That's probably what Michigan is.
- 39:46Speaker 1: They got the worst quarterback in the SEC.
- 39:48Speaker 4: Which is said they wouldn't have the worst quarterback.
- 39:50Speaker 1: In the SEC. Who's worse than Underwood?
- 39:52Speaker 4: Byron Brown looked worse on Saturday.
- 39:54Speaker 1: Byron Brown at least completed passes. Now, some of them
- 39:56Speaker 1: were to the wrong team.
- 39:58Speaker 2: I agree with you on that. Let's get into a
- 40:02Speaker 2: little Auburn, a little Alabama, and some other games going on.
- 40:05Speaker 2: My choice when we come back. We'll pick another game.
- 40:09Speaker 1: Crockett Coffee.
- 40:10Speaker 2: It's the coffee that Buck and and Clay and Buck's
- 40:15Speaker 2: brother Mason, they've come up with. They named it Crockett
- 40:18Speaker 2: Coffee because, well, it's just a good American history, story lesson, right?
- 40:23Speaker 2: Davy Crockett was a hunter.
- 40:24Speaker 1: He's a storyteller.
- 40:25Speaker 2: He's a patriot, a backwoods legend. You look at the
- 40:28Speaker 2: logo of Davy surfing on the back of crocodiles, and
- 40:31Speaker 2: you know that these guys have created a coffee that
- 40:34Speaker 2: means business. You can get it light roasted, medium roasted, dark, decaffeinated, organic,
- 40:40Speaker 2: even the mushroom blend. It's always fresh. roasted right in
- 40:44Speaker 2: America's heartland. It ships fresh roasted, never sits on a
- 40:47Speaker 2: warehouse shelf for six months like a lot of these
- 40:50Speaker 2: things do. You set up a subscription and it shows
- 40:53Speaker 2: up on your schedule, shows up on schedule, change it,
- 40:58Speaker 2: cancel it, move it, do it, whatever you need to do,
- 41:02Speaker 2: just like the free market attendant. You're not locked into
- 41:04Speaker 2: anything long term. And they even give you free shipping
- 41:07Speaker 2: on orders of $ 59 or more. And there's a discount
- 41:10Speaker 2: always for veterans. And also, Crockett has partnered with Tunnel
- 41:14Speaker 2: to Towers, building mortgage-free homes for the families of fallen
- 41:17Speaker 2: service members and those injured veterans and first responders. It's
- 41:22Speaker 2: good coffee, made in America, doing some good. CrockettCoffee.com, CrockettCoffee.com.
- 41:28Speaker 2: That's C-R-O-C-K-E-T-T, CrockettCoffee.com. Back in a moment on the next
- 41:34Speaker 2: round here on Sporting State. Okay, we're going to talk
- 41:37Speaker 2: to the great Andy Staples. at the top of the
- 41:40Speaker 2: hour here on the next round on Sporting State, presented
- 41:45Speaker 2: by our friends at Hard Rock Bets. Before we jump
- 41:47Speaker 2: into our next game, quickly tell us about our friend
- 41:50Speaker 2: Clay Travis and his law firm.
- 41:52Speaker 4: Yes, accidents do not wait for a good time. One
- 41:56Speaker 4: bad moment, a wreck, a fall, a doctor who wasn't
- 41:58Speaker 4: paying attention. Suddenly, you're fighting an insurance company that does
- 42:01Speaker 4: this every day. That's why our friend Clay started Clay
- 42:05Speaker 4: Travis Law, built a firm around one idea. People deserve
- 42:07Speaker 4: someone willing to pay attention, ask the hard questions, and

- 42:47Speaker 2: My turn to pick, I'm going to pick Baylor and
- 42:50Speaker 2: Auburn because though it wasn't always great football, it was
- 42:54Speaker 2: a very entertaining game. down to a two-point decision by
- 42:58Speaker 2: Dave Aranda. If I did social media for anyone at Auburn,
- 43:03Speaker 2: I would have done a Game of Thrones motif with
- 43:07Speaker 2: Winters is coming. He makes the tackle at the goal
- 43:10Speaker 2: line on the two-point play and wins the game for
- 43:14Speaker 2: Auburn 17-16. The downside is that Auburn was in a
- 43:20Speaker 2: situation where two-point conversion was going to beat them. In
- 43:24Speaker 2: the past, Auburn, the last five years, Auburn has lost
- 43:26Speaker 2: these kind of games. The downside is Byron Brown had
- 43:30Speaker 2: three interceptions. Here's his coach, Alex Golish, after the game.
- 43:35Speaker 5: Kept going over on the bench, be good.
- 43:37Speaker 6: Coach, I'm good, man.
- 43:38Speaker 1: With a smile.
- 43:40Speaker 7: It's part of being a veteran, part of being ready
- 43:45Speaker 7: for the moment. He's a special football player, special human.
- 43:52Speaker 3: Man.
- 43:54Speaker 4: I didn't realize that's the first one.
- 43:56Speaker 7: I guess it is. These guys made it really hard.
- 43:58Speaker 7: And again, I blame us more than Byram. We tried
- 44:03Speaker 7: to force some things to try to push it down
- 44:05Speaker 7: the field where, man, I just felt like we kept
- 44:13Speaker 7: driving and stalling right in that middle of the field,
- 44:17Speaker 7: that 50 to 40. And I felt like we just
- 44:20Speaker 7: had to go end it. Like, Ma'am, I take more
- 44:25Speaker 7: blame for the picks than, to be honest with you, Byron.
- 44:29Speaker 7: That's on us as much as anybody, really on me,
- 44:33Speaker 7: trying to force it a little bit.
- 44:35Speaker 1: So I've got to be better. I will be. Well,
- 44:38Speaker 1: that's a difference, by the way, is Coach not blaming
- 44:40Speaker 1: his players. Auburn had a lot of that. I loved it.
- 44:43Speaker 4: I forgot who was the sideline reporter that interviewed him
- 44:48Speaker 4: after the game.
- 44:49Speaker 1: Oh, I'm trying to remember.
- 44:50Speaker 6: Taylor Davis?
- 44:51Speaker 1: No. Was it Stormy?
- 44:54Speaker 4: Anyway, she asked the question, what do you guys need
- 44:56Speaker 4: to work on? He was like, ooh, you guys, you know,
- 44:58Speaker 4: it's a long list. And then he started listing. But
- 45:01Speaker 4: I mean, I was like, A, B, C.
- 45:05Speaker 1: He made my post-game interview for Brooks, I mean, post-game
- 45:07Speaker 1: video for Brooks. Very easy. All I did was repeat
- 45:10Speaker 1: exactly what Alex was saying.
- 45:11Speaker 4: I think the biggest problem, or twofold, I did not
- 45:14Speaker 4: think the secondary was going to be a problem. The
- 45:16Speaker 4: secondary is a massive problem. There were holes throughout. Like,
- 45:20Speaker 4: I couldn't decide... Like, DJ Lagway at times looked good. Yeah, well,
- 45:24Speaker 4: that first drive before he got hurt. Yeah, before the fumble?
- 45:28Speaker 1: Before the fumble, which, again, that's Lagway's problem is he
- 45:30Speaker 1: does not value the football. But before the fumble, man,
- 45:34Speaker 1: he was making pro throws.
- 45:35Speaker 4: Well, I just, you know, the Gavin Freeman kid was
- 45:40Speaker 4: open all freaking day long, and Jaden Porter was, too.
- 45:44Speaker 2: Freeman was a walk-on at Oklahoma. and then he's worked
- 45:48Speaker 2: his way to Baylor, and he's making those plays.
- 45:50Speaker 4: Well, he was, and you heard this on the broadcast,
- 45:52Speaker 4: he was at Oak State last year, and Dave Aranda
- 45:54Speaker 4: said he was one of the more difficult covers, so
- 45:55Speaker 4: they went out and they get him in the portal
- 45:57Speaker 4: with the coaching transition, and Apparently, Eric Morris needed to
- 46:01Speaker 4: find a way for Gavin Freeman to stay on that
- 46:03Speaker 4: Oklahoma State roster. With all that said, man, I just
- 46:06Speaker 4: thought these receivers were open all day. I wonder if
- 46:08Speaker 4: Porter would have made the grab before he makes the
- 46:11Speaker 4: first and goal grab, the easy touchdown.
- 46:13Speaker 1: The one that was in his hands in the end zone?
- 46:15Speaker 4: Did they kick the extra point at that?
- 46:16Speaker 1: Yeah, there's enough time left. I think they probably do.
- 46:19Speaker 2: I think that time on the clock was the whole
- 46:21Speaker 2: reason Aranda went for two. And you've got a quarterback
- 46:24Speaker 2: that's not mobile anymore because he's got an injured ankle.
- 46:26Speaker 2: It was your chance to walk it off. It was
- 46:28Speaker 2: a great play design. If he throws it to the
- 46:31Speaker 2: other side of his body, he walks into it.
- 46:33Speaker 6: Easy, yeah.
- 46:34Speaker 1: And just trips and falls.
- 46:35Speaker 4: Still came down to inches. Auburn's offensive line is, I think,
- 46:39Speaker 4: a problem. Byron Brown looked a step slow.
- 46:42Speaker 1: I don't know why.
- 46:43Speaker 4: I don't know if you guys felt like that. He
- 46:45Speaker 4: looked a step slow from what I had seen before,
- 46:47Speaker 4: and I don't think that's the difference between playing group
- 46:50Speaker 4: six and Baylor. He looked a step slow.
- 46:54Speaker 2: The way you said it, Baylor– I'm wondering what Baylor's
- 46:58Speaker 2: going to be because if it was Baylor that we
- 46:59Speaker 2: had last year, then I think you're really concerned about
- 47:02Speaker 2: Auburn moving forward.
- 47:03Speaker 4: Well, I said this last week. Baylor's defense is going
- 47:07Speaker 4: to be improved. It has to be. And the offense
- 47:10Speaker 4: isn't going to be as good.
- 47:11Speaker 2: They did spend a lot of money, apparently. You saw
- 47:14Speaker 2: that in the broadcast of NIL money on that defensive
- 47:17Speaker 2: line that worked Auburn's offensive line throughout that game. I
- 47:20Speaker 2: was surprised that Auburn– they didn't really– start dominating running
- 47:26Speaker 2: the football. I thought they'd be able to, with Cobb
- 47:28Speaker 2: and Brown, I thought they'd be able to run the
- 47:31Speaker 2: ball a little bit.
- 47:31Speaker 4: At least we got that answer. I mean, most people
- 47:33Speaker 4: believe that Cobb was going to be the guy, but
- 47:35Speaker 4: Bryson Washington against his former team, only one touch in
- 47:38Speaker 4: that game. I mean, the good news for Auburn is
- 47:40Speaker 4: you get Southern Miss, but if you were playing Florida
- 47:42Speaker 4: next week, you would not feel good about that matchup.
- 47:44Speaker 1: You would not. Now, before I say what I'm about
- 47:47Speaker 1: to say, I know Deshaun Womack, who is one of
- 47:50Speaker 1: their best pass rushers, left the game, but I don't
- 47:52Speaker 1: know about you guys. I was stunned how little pressure
- 47:55Speaker 1: Auburn could get on a one-legged quarterback. I mean, he's
- 47:58Speaker 1: dead in that pocket. If you can just get to him,
- 48:00Speaker 1: he's probably going to crumble. He can't go down. They
- 48:02Speaker 1: couldn't get to him.
- 48:02Speaker 4: Well, in that first drive, you see Xavier Atkins get
- 48:05Speaker 4: the only sack of the day, and you're like, damn,
- 48:06Speaker 4: this might be a long day for Lagway.
- 48:08Speaker 1: I know. I mean, Atkins looked like he was fired
- 48:10Speaker 1: out of a cannon on that sack. And I'm with Lance.
- 48:13Speaker 1: I'm like, oof, they'll be all over Lagway all day.
- 48:15Speaker 1: They did not touch him again in the backfield. And
- 48:18Speaker 1: on the flip side, let's just talk lines of scrimmage here,
- 48:20Speaker 1: because on the flip side– All Baylor did was make
- 48:24Speaker 1: tackles for losses. I mean, it was one tackle for
- 48:26Speaker 1: loss after another. Was it 12? Is that what they
- 48:28Speaker 1: ended up with? I saw differing numbers. I've seen 11.
- 48:31Speaker 1: I've seen 12.
- 48:32Speaker 4: I've got 11 here.
- 48:33Speaker 1: It's double-digit. Let's just say double-digit. That's scary enough if
- 48:37Speaker 1: you just get into the double-digit tackles for losses. And
- 48:40Speaker 1: just on lines of scrimmage, I was surprised Auburn couldn't
- 48:45Speaker 1: pressure the passer more than they did. And I was
- 48:47Speaker 1: surprised they allowed their running backs and quarterback to get
- 48:50Speaker 1: hit in the backfield as much as they did.
- 48:51Speaker 4: But the most important thing is they do get the win.
- 48:53Speaker 4: We will probably forget about the way that game played
- 48:56Speaker 4: out as the season moves on. And 10 consecutive opening
- 48:59Speaker 4: season wins for Auburn. So that would have been a problem.
- 49:02Speaker 4: As bad as these seasons have been for Auburn, they
- 49:04Speaker 4: always seem to get the opener. So if Golish drops
- 49:07Speaker 4: the opener with what they've got coming up, we've talked
- 49:09Speaker 4: about that all summer long, that was going to be
- 49:11Speaker 4: a problem. But Hey, look, they found a way to
- 49:13Speaker 4: get the win.
- 49:13Speaker 2: Andy Staples at the top of the hour. Real quickly,
- 49:16Speaker 2: Alabama here. We'll get more into Alabama and Auburn and
- 49:18Speaker 2: everything else coming up. in Hour 3 of the show
- 49:23Speaker 2: when we flip over to the next round. But real quickly,
- 49:26Speaker 2: just a thought on what you saw from Keelan Russell
- 49:29Speaker 2: in his debut as Alabama's starter.
- 49:32Speaker 4: So we've seen two other starting quarterbacks for Keelan DeVore
- 49:36Speaker 4: at Alabama, Jayla Melrow, Ty Simpson. To me, it looked
- 49:40Speaker 4: like a combination of both of those guys. Like his escapability.
- 49:45Speaker 2: Kalen Frankenstein got in the lab over there and took
- 49:47Speaker 2: a little mill road.
- 49:48Speaker 4: This is not a bad thing. My only criticism of
- 49:51Speaker 4: Russell would be he has got to find some touch
- 49:53Speaker 4: on the football. Keen Holtz last night, you talked about
- 49:56Speaker 4: the touch for that big guy. These were little BBs
- 49:59Speaker 4: he was throwing. It reminded me of when I first
- 50:01Speaker 4: saw Lamar Jackson play, which is a high compliment.
- 50:04Speaker 6: And Lamar.
- 50:05Speaker 4: finally refined throwing the football and learned how to put
- 50:08Speaker 4: a little touch on it. I mean, he's just throwing
- 50:10Speaker 4: BBs all over the place.
- 50:11Speaker 2: Eleven pressures, and he had to escape from a lot
- 50:14Speaker 2: of pressure from that East Carolina line.
- 50:16Speaker 1: And that is a problem.
- 50:17Speaker 4: Like this offensive line, I know on paper they ran
- 50:22Speaker 4: the football, but I thought they got pushed off the
- 50:24Speaker 4: ball a lot. Like I don't know how much different
- 50:26Speaker 4: this offensive line is going to be.
- 50:28Speaker 1: If you take Russell's scrambles out of the rush yardage,
- 50:31Speaker 1: And the only reason I'm saying that is because those
- 50:33Speaker 1: are not called runs. That's him getting pressure and having
- 50:35Speaker 1: to scramble. I don't know that you'd feel any better
- 50:38Speaker 1: about Alabama's rush attack than what you did last year.
- 50:41Speaker 1: And I don't know that people feel great about it
- 50:42Speaker 1: right now.
- 50:43Speaker 2: Like one of Daniel Hill's best runs, he got hit
- 50:45Speaker 2: in the backfield and had to shake him off and
- 50:48Speaker 2: keep going.
- 50:49Speaker 1: That happened a lot. Now Crowell looked different.
- 50:51Speaker 6: EJ looked different.
- 50:51Speaker 1: Yeah, that's your best running back.
- 50:52Speaker 4: But you'll know more about Alabama, obviously, coming up this weekend,
- 50:57Speaker 4: going to Lexington, a game that they're a double-digit favorite.
- 50:59Speaker 4: They should win, but you'll know a little bit more
- 51:01Speaker 4: about the offensive line. But here's the thing, from one
- 51:03Speaker 4: season to the next, I know LSU has improved and
- 51:06Speaker 4: can run the football. LSU had more rushing yards in
- 51:09Speaker 4: the first half against Clemson than they had in any
- 51:13Speaker 4: game last year. So that immediately is, that's why LSU
- 51:17Speaker 4: is a contender. Because they can run the football and
- 51:19Speaker 4: their defense is going to be dominant. Alabama, I don't
- 51:22Speaker 4: know about the offensive line and running the football.
- 51:24Speaker 1: It felt like maybe the run blocking was a bit improved,
- 51:28Speaker 1: but it felt like they take a big step back
- 51:30Speaker 1: in the pass blocking. I say that. Simpson was running
- 51:33Speaker 1: for his life all last year, too.
- 51:34Speaker 4: But I don't think Simpson could have gotten out of
- 51:36Speaker 4: some of the things Russell did.
- 51:37Speaker 1: Russell was a magician to get out of some of that.
- 51:39Speaker 2: We'll dot more into Alabama coming up to start the
- 51:42Speaker 2: next round part of the show in an hour. Andy
- 51:44Speaker 2: Staples on the other side. The Atlanta Falcons have named
- 51:47Speaker 2: Tua Tungvaloa the starter in week one over Michael Penix.
- 51:51Speaker 2: So that story from the NFL as we kick off
- 51:54Speaker 2: the NFL season on Wednesday night. Staples, when we come back,
- 51:58Speaker 2: this is the next round presented by Hard Rock Bets
- 52:00Speaker 2: right here on Sporting State.
