- 0:17Welcome everybody to episode two of Cards and Categories, brought to you by Razball.
- 0:22I'm my Cool Art. You can find me on Twitter art in Cool
- 0:25seven and I'm joined again as always by Jeremy Brewer. Jeremy, how's it
- 0:30going? It is going well? Thank you for asking. Great baseball day.
- 0:36Great. Excited to be back on the pod. Find me at Jay
- 0:39Brewer one seven over on Twitter or on Razzball every week if you're if you're
- 0:45reading the hitter profile. So excited to jump back into our second pod after
- 0:50last week's smashing success. Yeah, thanks again to everybody who listened to the
- 0:56pod and download the pod. And we heard from lots of friends, family,
- 1:00colleagues, people of rasball, people outside of raz Ball in terms of
- 1:04the Fantasy Baseball overall ecosystems. So it was lots of great feedback and we've
- 1:14got lots of great topics to work on going forward. And I think I've
- 1:18got some people lined up for special especially baseball cards. People are into talking
- 1:23about the baseball cards stuff. Lots of people with PCs and some people within
- 1:26razball that have some of the most monster cards I've ever seen. And just
- 1:32like casually sending me pictures. Yeah, I don't know that I can compete.
- 1:38I'm happy to be the second best person on this podcast. Unfortunately we
- 1:42bring a guest that might knock me down a notch. That's okay, I'm
- 1:44ready for the competition. Yeah, yeah, it was great. I was
- 1:48getting like, yeah, pictures of Jordan rookies and Trout rookies, and I'm
- 1:53like, here's this black refractor of Bartolo cologne that I love. You said,
- 1:57Blaze Jordan right now, Michael Jordan. Yeah, I got plenty of
- 2:02place Jordan's hanging around. That's yeah. Which actually, like it's kind of
- 2:06been funny. He's kind of popped recently on people's prospect boards and I've been
- 2:09listening to training remember which pot it was, but um, they were mentioning
- 2:15how Blaze Jordan's kind of a pop up guy who's been performing well this year,
- 2:20and I was like, WHOA, Like I didn't know that people weren't
- 2:23in on Blaze Jordan because like, yeah, that when he that card came
- 2:25out, that was like the only card to get from that set, and
- 2:30so like it's a little strange that people are like just now hearing of him.
- 2:34Yeah, it's funny that the card community is like early on prospects and
- 2:38then they fade fast, and then it's like the fantasy community comes back and
- 2:43like discovers the guy the card community been ignoring for now two years. It
- 2:47was like, wait, who's this guy. I just saw Matt McClain's first
- 2:53Bowman auto and I think it was going for like one fifty or something like
- 2:58that. I'm like, you know, there was nobody collecting Matt McClain autos
- 3:01when he when he came up, and everyone's like, oh, look at
- 3:05this guy. I always knew he was great. So it's the hobby.
- 3:09And you know, the fantasy worlds sometimes quite a bit differently, especially towards
- 3:15those prospects. Yeah, and actually, yeah, I was. I can
- 3:17see why Blaze Jordan is popping up on people's um dynasty lists and prospects now
- 3:23because double A before he was well, he just got promoted double A.
- 3:27So in high A he was had a one forty five w RC plus with
- 3:32a three twenty four, three eighty five, five thirty three line with twelve
- 3:37homers fourteen point six percent k rate. That's he's actually maybe pretty Legit might
- 3:42have to get those Blaze Jordan cards. Back out in a hard part.
- 3:46With those guys, you never know if it's the teams draft them, the
- 3:49drives the hype at the beginning, or if it's the actual player. But
- 3:53it looks like Blaze Jordan might actually have you know, have something there,
- 3:57some legitimate pop to your point, and it's it's nice to see a guy,
- 4:01you know, at his age twenty years old, you know, already
- 4:05in double A after having pretty successful high day debut there over the last year
- 4:14and a half and you know, keeping the case under control. You know,
- 4:17nothing, No, not too babit fueled or anything like that. So
- 4:20yeah, you're you're right, he might it might be one of those guys
- 4:24transitioning from the card the card popularity just because he was the first round pick
- 4:29of the Red Sox over to true uh you know, true true fantasy relevance.
- 4:38Yeah, and with a name like Blaze. He also helps us out
- 4:40for a segue because speaking of blazing hot things, are blazing hot people there,
- 4:46yeah, baseball, blazing hotness in general, Shohyotani, we haven't.
- 4:49We didn't talk about him last time, but I think now is the time
- 4:53to talk about him because um, as I alluded to last week, Otani
- 4:59is my biggest PC for sure. It's made me plenty of money from a
- 5:03large lot that I bought. His stock tanked and so they're living large off
- 5:10of that for my cards. But in terms of baseball yesterday, I think
- 5:15he just kind of took it all to a new level that, like I'm
- 5:17sure you saw and I'll look in too in the page notes for anybody that
- 5:23hasn't seen it at all. But Otani blasts a huge home run in the
- 5:28ninth inning last night, crazy bat flip, and you could just see like
- 5:31the rage and the anger kind of come through in that swing that, Like,
- 5:36it was really impressive to see him kind of holding all that in with
- 5:40all this try deadline talk, and I'm sure he's frustrated with having another sunk
- 5:46season, because I don't know about you, I don't think he's going to
- 5:48get traded. I think the financial implications for the Angels and Lardie Moreno is
- 5:54just too large in terms of advertising dollars and butts and seats that like,
- 5:59I just don't think that give him up. But the that blast was just
- 6:03something else. Then he's been doing this recently because he did this over the
- 6:08weekend too, that he's been just annihilating balls to like just left or center
- 6:13in Angel Stadium, to where you're just like, there's only one guy that's
- 6:17left handed that's hitting that homer and it's him right now. Yeah, it
- 6:21was. It was very impressive. Y I did see it. You know,
- 6:24love the bat flip that he had with it is showing some emotion,
- 6:28and you're right, it's there's got to be for him something with the trade
- 6:32deadline coming up, where you know he's just it must be a for a
- 6:36guy like that motivating, right if nothing else motivates him to go out there
- 6:41and just you know, just crush it every day. I think I'm probably
- 6:46there with you that you know he's not gonna move. It's one of those
- 6:49unique situations where you know, if they could actually get the return that he
- 6:53deserves, they absolutely should move him. I don't know that. I don't
- 6:58know the system has it. It's kind of like Soto when he got traded,
- 7:01but some it's like trade is it trading for two Juan Sotos? You
- 7:04got the pitching, Like I don't. I don't know that there's any comparable
- 7:10player that you can talk about as far as trading for him. If you
- 7:13need a starting pitcher and you need a number four cleanup hitter and you get
- 7:16them in one shot. I don't know, is that seventeen pop one hundred
- 7:21prospects that it takes to bring that. I don't know, but you're right,
- 7:27it's that if they trade him, they do not have a chance of
- 7:30bringing him back. Um, and you know that that fan base is gonna
- 7:34reject them, probably harder than if they just can't resign the guy. Um.
- 7:39Yeah, they'll get the comp pick they'll get, they'll get a first
- 7:42round or to come back and the competitive balance or whatever it is to to
- 7:46come back in them. But I can't see them making that move. So
- 7:51yeah, and it'll be interesting to see, like what he does down the
- 7:56stretch for the Angels, Like does he like just ride this anchor And like,
- 8:00I mean, he's already put up the greatest season of all time that
- 8:03like it would be really really awesome to see him challenge for sixty home runs.
- 8:07And did you see in those comparisons of him and Judge at the same
- 8:13point in the season. Yeah, he's right there. And I know Judge
- 8:16started hitting a lot more down the stretch and it's kind of weird that that
- 8:20bouncy ball kind of controversy disappeared. I don't know if it maybe it didn't
- 8:24have enough merit once it was sniff tested a little more or what. But
- 8:30like, yeah, I could see Manfred wanting to deduce that for Otani,
- 8:33but it would be then Lardie Marino at that point would just be losing his
- 8:39mind, because that's the dream scenario right there, is that he can push
- 8:41for sixty homers and still be producing at He's not quite pitching it like a
- 8:48say, young level like I was hoping he would this year. Yeah,
- 8:50he's a tick below, So I mean obviously he's terrible because like yeah,
- 8:54I mean, we've definitely got to send them down just to work on some
- 8:58things. But yeah, I look at that the Judge comparison, and I
- 9:03think it's comparison to the first ninety four games of the season. Both guys
- 9:07had thirty four homers, both guys had seventy three ribbies. Judge was hitting
- 9:11two eighty two. Otani's hitting three oh one. Time's getting on base a
- 9:15little bit higher. Clip But at the same time, I don't feel that
- 9:20the Otani hype train is the same. But it was for Judge. I
- 9:24don't know if this is the West Coast scenario where he's he's launching these bombs
- 9:28and bat flips that you know midnight on the East Coast or what it is,
- 9:33but it doesn't you know, I saw the numbers, and I'm like,
- 9:35it didn't seem like he's hit the same echelon as far as excitement and
- 9:41following and talking about what the end of the season has. We're talking about
- 9:45if he's gonna be traded or not, not the historic numbers that he could
- 9:48be putting up. Yeah, and I do think that it's a little bit
- 9:50of like the East Coast bias, But I mean part of it too is
- 9:54Otani has just been so superlative that I everything just amazes me that he can't,
- 10:03like, there's only so many more tears of excitement or fame or whatever
- 10:09you have it that would push him to like more and more coverage. And
- 10:13he's already pushing that upper top star limit. So that might be a factor,
- 10:18and we'll see maybe as it comes down the stretch. But like,
- 10:22if he keeps swinging in the bath the way he has been, I think
- 10:26he's gonna challenge it and it's going to be really entertained on the stretch and
- 10:31we'll see if he actually gets pitched too, because just kind of like Judge
- 10:35ran into and you can see it now with how bad the Yankees are without
- 10:37Judge that there's nobody in that line of protecting Otani, and especially if they
- 10:43move other pieces around him at the deadline, then like it might just be
- 10:48him and Trey Cabbage hanging out in LA. Well, you'd like to think
- 10:52Trout gets healthy at some point here and comes back and just sits behind him
- 10:56in the lineup and gives him our protection, but not not holding my breath
- 11:01anytime soon, especially with a handmade injury that the Trout had. It always
- 11:05takes seems to take some time to come back from, at least to get
- 11:07to be dangerous to get. You can come back, but it seems like
- 11:09it does take some time from those. So, yeah, I hit one
- 11:13other thing I wanted to call out to you. You know, bat flip
- 11:16from Otani? Did you see the bat flip from Max Kepler? I?
- 11:20Did you know? I'll link to it in the in the game notes.
- 11:24I'll let you to describe it though, because it is it's a it's a
- 11:28piece of work, that's for sure. Yeah, So I think I compare
- 11:31this too if if Johai Otani is doing bat flips, this is the kind
- 11:35of style that I would have. I'll call it more of a bat kick.
- 11:39Um. You know, Kepler takes a nice swing. I think he
- 11:43hits one right down the first base line into the corner looking to go you
- 11:46know, two, maybe three. As he's coming out of the box,
- 11:50somehow manages to get the bat between his legs and literally flips it between his
- 11:56legs and kicks it way off so towards the third base side. Man does
- 12:00a little front roll and then makes his way stumbling around to second. So
- 12:07my comparison there is, you know, there's bat flips and there's back kicks.
- 12:11Um. Max Kepler has the has has the field cornered right now on
- 12:16the best back kick of the season. Um. And I'm not sure he's
- 12:20very proud of that, but hey, you can get entertainment either way.
- 12:26Uh oh Tani is providing it just like Max Kepler. He can't hold against
- 12:31the guy. Yeah, Max Kickler be the only pod from here on now
- 12:37that calls the Max Kickler will be doing it like four years to now.
- 12:39Nobody's my fantasy team name for the rest of the season. I got a
- 12:43few things I gotta go, go, go change. So I'm pretty sure
- 12:45I have one Bax Kepler as it is. Yeah, I bet that team's
- 12:48doing real well. Yeah, style points, that's the where that team's going.
- 12:52Nice. Okay, Well, stick around, everybody. We've got a
- 12:56great show ahead of us. We're first going to cover through the twenty twenty
- 13:00three Tops Chrome coming out next week, and then after that we're going to
- 13:03get into some fantasy changes in value, especially guys who are going up in
- 13:09value that you can pick up and analyze here in anticipation of bigger roles after
- 13:15the trade deadline on August first. So, like I said, we got
- 13:18a great show. Hang around, and we'll be back right after the break.

- 14:56Like I said, we're going to cover the release of Tops Chrome twenty
- 14:58twenty, one of our favorite sets that comes out every year. In fact
- 15:03that like when I was a kid, I was only able to afford like
- 15:05one pack of Chrome every year. So you'll get a kick out of this
- 15:11brew because I'm sure you went to the same place because we grew up together
- 15:15and blew into normal Illinois. But do you remember J and G Collectibles.
- 15:20It was in the name. It was like in my neighborhood, like two
- 15:22or three blocks over in that basement. Yeah, I do remember that that
- 15:28place was questionable at best. I can't believe we were allowed to go there.
- 15:31But yeah, there was this guy who ran a hobby shop out of
- 15:35his basement and it was open on weekends. And I always remember when Tops
- 15:39Chrome came out, I would go over and with my saved up allowance,
- 15:41go and buy one single packet Tops Chrome every year, so like from ninety
- 15:48seven to like two thousand and two or so, like I've got just like
- 15:52four Tops Chrome cards a year. It's great. Well, it depends on
- 15:56who you hit, but I have a feeling it was. It was not
- 16:00the big names. I remember. The biggest hit I think I ever hit
- 16:03was a Jeff Blauser Cubs insert like Cloud nine, like a Cloud nine insert,
- 16:08because he there was like one year for the Cubs that Jeff Blauser was
- 16:12amazingly good. And I know he made a couple All Star Games for the
- 16:15Braves because I used him last week in Immaculate Grade and blew everyone's mind.
- 16:19But yeah, Jeff Blauser. Yeah. I don't know the last time that
- 16:22I heard Jeff blausser name. I feel like, uh, that's that's a
- 16:29baseball name. Game will waiting to be brought out by somebody. Oh yeah,
- 16:33and he's okay with that ammaculate grade. He doesn't qualify for too much.
- 16:37But anyways, back to tops Chrome, we got it released it next
- 16:41week. And if you recall from tops Chrome last year and mostly it was
- 16:45a bungled fiasco, there was the Tops MVP buyback. So they're running that
- 16:49again this year in anticipation. And I know you've got details, so I'll
- 16:52let you rattle them off. Yeah, so MVP buyback, you know whatnot
- 16:57all the details are out there yet, we're reading the t leaves. They
- 17:00have announced that they will have the MVP buyback this year. So if we
- 17:04remember back from last year, that was any card of the MVP, so
- 17:10last year, Paul Goldschman and Aaron Judge could be traded in at your local
- 17:15hobby shop if they're participating. I think a lot of them, a lot
- 17:18of them did. I think it was actually a boon to them, or
- 17:21you could mail them into a few of the online hobby shops and get credit
- 17:26for them way further than their value normally would be. So last year,
- 17:30and I think it's expected to be the same this year. For a base
- 17:34card of your MVP, you're getting twenty dollars of store credit generally, or
- 17:40refractor version that generally could be different types of refractors, like your extractor,
- 17:45your regular fractor might be a logo fractor something like that. You're getting a
- 17:49forty dollar redemption value than anything serial numbered. If you're serial number above one
- 17:56hundred is one hundred dollar value, or serial numbered under one hundred, you're
- 17:59getting two hundred dollars value. And I personally hit a judged to ninety nine
- 18:03last year in the logo fractor boxes right after this came out, and the
- 18:07local hobby shot guy gave me a real funny to look. As I was
- 18:10trying to trade that in, I had to think, gosh, darn't sure
- 18:12he knew that thing was worth two hundred bucks. You better believe he did
- 18:15not give me a bundle deal on anything. When I traded in like six
- 18:18hundred dollars of redemption. He didn't let you just count it at all.
- 18:25No, I don't know what I was thinking, you can't imagine why.
- 18:27Yeah, so I bought a few random boxes of things. But yeah,
- 18:32so the MVP buyback is common, so really it's an interest. It's a
- 18:37little interesting dynamic this year because it wasn't announced really last year until after the
- 18:41fact. Really, if you remember, they bungled the entire release of Chrome
- 18:45that like they didn't get it out the door in time because it came up
- 18:48too long, and the quality on it was absolutely terrible. I think they
- 18:53released it without some hits going in. I mean I would imagine, like
- 18:59I think I can say that about every set and not have to worry about
- 19:00libel um. And so, yeah, it was terrible. So they did
- 19:06it as like a make right because yeah, they were all sorts of issues
- 19:11that like, I don't know, quality control just took the day off at
- 19:14Tops during times I call the silver packs are usually in the tops. Chrome
- 19:18it didn't that's what. It didn't insert them, and in the early ones
- 19:22they had to create like special silver packs for those early no box remember it,
- 19:26they didn't. They didn't insert the short printed rookies. Oh yes,
- 19:30that was wander in CJ. Abrams and there was a fourth dude. But
- 19:37That's what it was. They didn't insert those like short printed rookies, and
- 19:41that's I still can't believe that they're they're super short printed because of that,
- 19:45because I they're buried in all sorts of random silver packs and Sonic and all
- 19:52sorts of weird products. Yeah. So it's what makes it interesting this year,
- 19:56like I said, is that we were still in the season and you
- 20:00know, we're supposed to be released next week, um, and we do
- 20:03not know who the MVPs this season will be. UM in the program will
- 20:07start, you know, November time frame at once they announced those MVPs.
- 20:11It's going to run through uh probably March of next year, giving you the
- 20:14time to to to go after uh those guys. But it's it creates an
- 20:18interesting hedging scenario. Uh, if you're buying a hobby box or Jumbo.
- 20:22I think hobbies I saw on tops would be like one twenty five this year.
- 20:26Jumbo's round three hundred after marker prices maybe you know, ten ten twenty
- 20:32percent high him. That depend on where you're trying to get it, if
- 20:33you're trying to get it quickly. UM, but you know, I think
- 20:37right now there's pretty clear odds on favorites for those MVPs. Um. Maybe
- 20:41it's just me, but I'm um, it looks like the Otani guy that
- 20:45we talked about in in our first segment today has a pretty good chance,
- 20:48um to be the MVP in the In the al it almost like it comes
- 20:53down to what on earth could happen that he wouldn't be MVP, Like he
- 20:57has to get hit hurt like today. I don't even think so. I
- 21:00think they have to like rewind time and undo stacks like he's at thirty five
- 21:04homers with I mean like a hundred in forty Okay, So I think the
- 21:11only thing that can happen is he goes like Pete Rose on us and starts
- 21:14gambling on those games. Hey, you guys, so what makes it interesting
- 21:21in theory, right, we should be trying to predict who's going to be
- 21:23the MVP and try to get their cards for you know, cheap and hang
- 21:27onto them. But to your point, I don't see who's gonna over Rotani
- 21:30and then move over to the NL like Akunya, right, It's it's gonna
- 21:34be a Kunya by by a mile. I mean, maybe not as much
- 21:37as what we're seeing with Otani, but it got to be the odd on
- 21:41favorite favorites, unless you know, somebody wants to throw some votes towards Corbyn
- 21:45Carroll or something like that. Um, I think that it's pretty locked in.
- 21:48So it's gonna be interesting to see the prices on the aftermarket side for
- 21:52those buybacks. I think last year, and you can correct me if wrong.
- 21:56I want to say, the base cards we're going for like fifteen bucks
- 22:02like as singles, even though you can only get twenty dollars of value out
- 22:04of them, And then the refractors were going from US thirty when you get
- 22:07forty vote dollars of value out of them, which I mean, hey,
- 22:11if you're trying to buy some hobby boxes or something like that, it's kind
- 22:14of like getting a ten percent discount code you're taking into your local hobby shops.
- 22:17So there's still some still some value there. But I was I was
- 22:21thinking this season, you know, maybe you're being paying like five dollars for
- 22:25the guy trying to heade that he might become the MVP. But it looks
- 22:27like we already know most likely who those guys are going to be, So
- 22:30I'm guessing those prices settled. Maybe ten dollars something like that, ten twelve
- 22:36dollars for the base of those guys after they come out, So jumping some
- 22:41brakes, get to grab the angels, you know, grab the braves,
- 22:45and maybe you look into a handful of those guys or maybe some numbered cards
- 22:48and definitely get some some value out of them. So cool program. I
- 22:52personally like it. I think it adds a cool element to the chase of
- 22:56those And personally last year I had a little bit too much Paul Goldman already
- 23:02banked away from my cardinals PC that paid off quite nicely, So yeah,
- 23:08and I mean I think getting back a little bit to like the Kunya,
- 23:12Like I guess I was worried like when they announced that, because it was
- 23:17pretty neck and neck about when they put that out there a few weeks ago
- 23:21that A Kunya and Carol were pretty close in terms of like who could be
- 23:25MVP, and obviously a Kunya was better, but like Carol was in the
- 23:29same breath and they've deviated since then. But that would have been insane with
- 23:34Corbyn Carroll's rookie card being the buy back and being traded in because definitely there
- 23:41are not many of those Judge and Goldschmidt refractors kind of out there, and
- 23:45especially if you're trying to PC those guys and build rainbows, like it's pretty
- 23:52much impossible. And like even for putting together full refractor sets, I know
- 23:56people do the base refractors and prison refractors and X fractors and pink refractors because
- 24:03they aren't serial numbered as full sets like those. I'm sure we're a pain
- 24:08with Judge and Goldschmidt, and it's only going to be harder with Otani because
- 24:12I could see based on just where the Otani prices have been and how they
- 24:18historically have been tracking that, like those refractors, not the base but the
- 24:22refractors, I could see trading above the trade in value like on the market
- 24:27because people want the card and don't want it trade it in. Yeah,
- 24:32it's you either want the card you want to get and you out have to
- 24:34pay for it, or you have to wait till like April next year to
- 24:37finish your set after the buyback dies out and people still have fine cards laying
- 24:42around. So it's creates a very interesting dynamic for the card collectors. I
- 24:48mean, hey, if you if you are ripping some cards, he hold
- 24:52your corbon Carrols. Hold you know your Luis Roberts just in case m Luis
- 25:00Araya's in case he got hit four hundred. Maybe gets some MVP votes.
- 25:03I don't know, um, but I'm pretty sure it's gonna be clear who
- 25:08has those, at least the leader in the clubhouse at this point. So
- 25:11MVP buyback for tops Chrome this year is gonna be another fun go out for
- 25:17folks and a good value. So all right, Yeah, and we also
- 25:22wanted to go through. And I'm sure you were aware of how many refractors
- 25:29there were last year and how crazy putting together a rainbow was if you tried
- 25:33that. I've never even attempted it. I can mad props to people who
- 25:37try to do it. I tried a Tommy Edmund rainbow a few years ago.
- 25:41Um I gave up. How what was the lows two got? Um?
- 25:47I think I got into I don't think I got in like the Cama
- 25:51or anything like that. I think I got into like the Mother's Days and
- 25:53then like the gold Refractors and things like that. I was getting the fifties.
- 25:57Um, it just got to the point. I don't know why,
- 26:00and it's I blame us Cardinals fans, Um, Tommy Edmund cards don't are
- 26:04ridiculously expensive. Someone unknown his rookie auto still goes for like forty or fifty
- 26:11bucks. It just does not make sense, um, And he doesn't have
- 26:15that many out there. So maybe there's a supply in the mand type of
- 26:18thing. But that's okay. So we'll run through the entire list of refractors.
- 26:23You ready, because we might be here for a little while. I'm
- 26:26gonna sit back a while because my kids might take the next ten minutes.
- 26:29Okay, Well, obviously you start with bass. You've got bass. Then
- 26:33you've got refractors, just the regular bass refractors, the rainbows. You've got
- 26:37frozen fractors, which is new. Don't even know what that is. So
- 26:41I've looked for pictures. Let me see if I'll look again, just to
- 26:45make sure that I was correct. But yeah, they're no pictures yet.
- 26:52So well, so I will say I have two daughters who are probably gonna
- 26:56be really excited about the frozen front frozen refractors. I don't think it's there's
- 27:02no fen frozen fractals like over. Sorry, I I'm watching too much.
- 27:06Frozen fractors, frozen fractors, frozen fractors. This is gonna be like the
- 27:14logo rafters on eBay. Yeah. Yeah. Uh. Then negative refractors,
- 27:21which have been round since like twenty twelve is probably, I think because that
- 27:26is another one of my PC's is white SOX negative refractors, and trying to
- 27:30remember how early that goes, I think like eleven or twelve or so,
- 27:33so that's a returner. Also have prison refractors again, that will be it
- 27:40looks like the prison refractors you can pull from retail this time though, which
- 27:44was always right right, Yeah, that's correct. Yeah, you tho retail.
- 27:48Um. Then you got pink refractors and SETI refractors again, two per
- 27:52blaster backs, so that's the only place you can get those X fractors.
- 27:55Ten per monster box, so that's only coming out of those retailed monster boxes.
- 28:00That's another returner. Then we've got here's when we start getting into colors,
- 28:03and they're numbered Magenta refractors three ninety nine, Magenta Sparkover refractors three fifty,
- 28:10Purple Speco refractors two ninety nine. Sorry, that was Magenta Speco with
- 28:15Magenta Sparkle Sonar purple, which is a new one of two seventy five regular
- 28:21purple two fifty. So right there you kind of got the purple and pink
- 28:26ones together and the speckle ones are repeats, but those sonars are new.
- 28:32I wonder if they'll end up looking like the Sonic from last year tops Crumb
- 28:36Sonic or yeah, you have to think so you have to think sonics got
- 28:38coming back this year. That one was a complete flop last year, you
- 28:42know, so you have to think that those won't. They're just taking that
- 28:45design moving it over to tops chrome because you don't see, like said,
- 28:49the logo fractors or anything like that. I think logo fractor. I haven't
- 28:55looked at the schedule, but I wouldn't be surprised if it comes out that.
- 28:57Like, I think that's part of what slowed them down last year two
- 29:00as they had all these variations that they're planning and maybe they won't, but
- 29:04we'll see. Okay. So then we moved into the blue green colors of
- 29:12also the cooler colors, so and those we got returning aqua refractors of one
- 29:19ninety nine, aqua lava refractors of one ninety nine. I don't think they
- 29:23had base aqua Lava. I know they had it on the autos last year,
- 29:29so that's a change that used to be wave. Then you've got blue
- 29:32refractors of one fifty, sonar blue refractors of one, twenty five, green
- 29:37refractors of ninety nine, green wave refractors of ninety nine, Sonar green of
- 29:42ninety nine, and then blue wave refractors of seventy five. Those wave refractors
- 29:49are only coming out of Jumbo and Hobbies, so they're only on the hobby
- 29:53side, but that is an extra one there because it used to just be
- 30:00blue and green and their wave. They added the sonars for both this year.
- 30:07Then we get into the warmer colors. The big guys here got gold
- 30:12refractors of fifty, gold wave refractors of fifty. Again, those are only
- 30:17hobby and Jumbo, Orange refractors of twenty five, which say hobby only right
- 30:22now, which is a change that used to be able to pull those from
- 30:25retails, so that's kind of a significant change. Orange wave of Hobby and
- 30:30Jumbo. Then you got bread of five, red wave of five, Hobby
- 30:34and Jumbo only on those wave and then printing plates and superfractors, so essentially
- 30:41they layered in those sonar refractors to replace I mean nothing. They were kind
- 30:47of created out nowhere, and then you got the new frozen fractors and that
- 30:53rounds it all up. That is two four six hey, twelve fourteen sixteen
- 31:03eighteen twenty two four six, I think thirty different by counting that. I
- 31:11can't quite count it right live, but it's a lot. So this thing
- 31:15is printed, printed, printed, printed. So I think that's a huge
- 31:21opportunity, especially for those MVP buy backs if you're looking for retail and looking
- 31:26for What I really liked was being able to buy a blaster for like thirty
- 31:30five bucks, and if you hit both of those MVPs, boom, you
- 31:33made your money right back. So I think that's a pretty nice deal.
- 31:37Yeah, I think so. I'm you know, I missed getting anything on
- 31:38the pre order myself because I just wasn't paying attention. But you personally looking
- 31:44to grab a jumbo. You know one thing that I noticed, there's just
- 31:48the details are sparse, Like you said, the frozen fractor details are sparse.
- 31:52At least one of the checklists I was looking at it had a taco
- 31:53fractor. Oh, so I looked at it's an insert. Okay, that
- 31:57is that an insert? I wasn't sure if that was like a cupon to
- 32:01taco bell or what's going on with that? Yeah, it's a it's an
- 32:07insert of Oh it looks like they're all of five. Yeah, so uh
- 32:15set it's only two hundred mm. I'll be interesting with those look like too.
- 32:21And I'm also looking now at the checklist that they have the MVP buybacks
- 32:24from last year, so I don't know if they restamped those or they had
- 32:30Goldschmidt and Judge signed hundreds of thousands of them or what. Yeah, I
- 32:34think I mean that was part of what they said in the MVP buyback is
- 32:37that they were planning to use those cards this year in sets, and so
- 32:42we haven't seen any yet. I would expect top chromes where there was those
- 32:45would show up. So it would be interesting to see if they've got some
- 32:49stamps autos, if they've done anything interesting with those cards to bring them in.
- 32:52Um. I hope some of them are just like bolded in half like
- 32:55I didn't I didn't turn in any like buybacks like that, but you know
- 33:00that they had some just like torn in half, like folded in half,
- 33:06all sorts of beat up by backs. Yeah, the quality did not matter.
- 33:10So you have to think it's if you've seen what people do with the
- 33:15Josel two Bay cards. They're still punishing him for his buzzer incidents and they're
- 33:21they're quite rough on those cards. Um, you have to think there's some
- 33:25guy in Boston just turning in these ripped up Aaron Judge, he buy back
- 33:29cards still still you know, salty over over something or like a mustache drawn
- 33:36on him. Yeah. I think I'll have to also show you sometimes.
- 33:42I think I have a one of my Bob Gibson cards from back in the
- 33:45day, actually Gibson with a mustache drawn on. I just had to keep
- 33:47it because you know, some kids just like, who's Bob Gibson? So
- 33:52it's great. Yeah, those are some of my favorites. Um. But
- 33:55yeah, and I think the other thing I wanted to call out is obviously
- 33:59it's going to be a really big product because they have all the rookies in
- 34:02it. So you got your ad Lets, your Gunners, your Corporate Carrols,
- 34:06your Jordan Walkers, your Volpies, your Yoshida's, Jung, Francisco Alvarez,
- 34:15y Green Morel yep, Nolan Green or Nolan Gorman's in there, You've
- 34:22got, so it's stacked like this is a stacked groups. So I know
- 34:25that the print runs are probably higher than what we all like. Um and
- 34:29I think the Jumbos last year, I think they had five autos, but
- 34:31they were they were more expensive. This year the Jumbos less expensive, has
- 34:36three autos in it. And so from what I was seeing that, you
- 34:38know, Hobby and Jumbo not probably a big difference in the in the values
- 34:44the odds as far as what you're what you're pulling out of there. But
- 34:46with the MVP buyback, with a really strong rookie class and all of those
- 34:52refractors that you're talking about, Uh, seems like there's definitely going to be
- 34:55some some decent value in in Tops Chrome this year. Yeah, I think
- 35:01so. In the base the auto checklist is it's pretty terrible standard Tops Chrome
- 35:07rookie stuff. So like I can already, I know I'm going to end
- 35:12up pulling so many Peyton burdocks out of like it's and Cody Clemens is in
- 35:20all sorts of crazy names on this list, but there's still lots of the
- 35:23big ones too, So it's going to be a fun, fun set.
- 35:28I'm really looking forward to ripping it, and I know you are too.
- 35:31We'll be back with the fantasy portion covering some deadline stuff. Stick around,
- 36:00all right, Welcome back, everybody to the third Act of Cards and Categories.
- 36:04Here is time for the Categories portion, the fantasy sports, the fantasy
- 36:07baseball, what we all came for. I think. So we figured with
- 36:12the trade deadline coming up here on August first, it would be good to
- 36:15sport some guys that we can maybe move and put onto our teams before that
- 36:21deadline, just to try to see if we can find opportunities to be able
- 36:25to buy pretty low as some of these things, some of these players are
- 36:30probably going to go up in prices. Players finally do get shuffled, and
- 36:34sure might be wrong on a few of these as some of the trades that
- 36:37we might anticipate happening with these dudes might not end up happening. But the
- 36:44only way that you can really make a good profit off of the trade deadline
- 36:46is to get in a couple of weeks early, analyze who's going to be
- 36:51moving where, what opportunities that opens up, and then try to strike and
- 36:54profit and so when I was looking through pulling back the curtain a little bit
- 37:01on this podcast, but we do a rundown together where we put ideas on
- 37:05what we want to talk about, and when we were throwing guys up on
- 37:09here for this list, I noticed that really kind of fell into two categories,
- 37:14which kind of makes sense around this time of the year. Is that
- 37:16one is the first category, which is really the most exciting, is young
- 37:22players maybe in the minors right now or in part time roles or on benches
- 37:25that could see bigger playing time battles and we actually no battles, like their
- 37:32battles might be cleared out and they might have the playing time all to themselves.
- 37:37And then the other one is certainly less exciting, much more grindy,
- 37:42very grindy is battling for closers and saves is relievers get moved around the deadline.
- 37:49So I'll let you choose brew Do you want to start with prospects or
- 37:53closer talk first? Well, let's start with the prospects. Nothing like a
- 37:58good young, exciting pros to get us going. Maybe maybe the Reds will
- 38:00call up another one who while we're doing this pod right now. Well,
- 38:06the funny thing is. I mean, you can start with the last dude
- 38:08that you've gotten the blurb because he threw a gem tonight. I think that's
- 38:12probably the best spot to start. Yeah, let's let's jump into it.
- 38:15So, Uh, the first guy that I've gotten the list is a Logan
- 38:21Allen for the for the the Guardians. Man, I really want to say
- 38:27say Indians so badly and good point. I still still did, uh since
- 38:32they're somewhere in the podcast world. But yeah, Logan Allen tonight. Uh
- 38:37eight k's five five Indians, one hit. Uh looking looking good for the
- 38:43Guardians. Uh. Right now he's kind of the odd man out of that
- 38:46rotation. Uh, they do have a nice looking rotation still. So he
- 38:52just got called up with Shane Bieber going on the the injured list and you
- 38:57know the reason I call call him out is you know, uh, injured
- 39:00list complicates it. But if there was a time to time to trade Shane
- 39:05Bieber, it's now, Uh it is. You know, he's got a
- 39:07year and a half of control left. Um, you know he's he hasn't
- 39:13hasn't been as good this year, but he's still been you know, Shane
- 39:15Bieber, he's still been very much worthwhile, and so uh, you know,
- 39:20looking at the Guardians, you know they're not gonna sign big free agents.
- 39:23They are, you know, they're the ones that's going to kind of
- 39:25work in that middle layer and for them bringing in some young young players and
- 39:31maybe some win now pieces by training Shane Bieber's absolutely makes a lot of sense.
- 39:36And so if Bieber goes logan Allen looks to be the guy being called
- 39:40up, as example by just tonight, he's gonna be the guy that's stuck
- 39:45in that rotation. So uh, you know, it might might be worth
- 39:49picking him up anyway, just because of how he pitched tonight and added him
- 39:53to to the roster. But you know, I think before the injury,
- 39:57I think Bieber was probably you know, a thirty percent chance to be traded.
- 40:01Um. You know, I have to knock that down now because I
- 40:05think there's gonna be questions is an arm injury, uh you know, inflammation.
- 40:08You know, everybody's saying it's nothing wrong, But you know, how
- 40:13much do we trust any front office and what they say of an injury these
- 40:15days? So I think there's still a chance that Bieber gets traded um and
- 40:22the returns a little bit less and Logan Allen is the beneficiary. But I
- 40:25think the likelihood at this point is that they're going to hold on to him
- 40:29in the off season, uh and see if you can build some some value
- 40:35as far as the rest of the season getting healthy. So look at Alan,
- 40:37I think it's I think it's worth a gable for him. So how
- 40:40about you, how where are you looking? I know I picked on Cincinnati
- 40:45Reds right as we kicked off here, Um, and maybe you have a
- 40:49Cincinnati Red did you want to just throw out of me? Yeah, well
- 40:52he's currently a Cincinnati Reds, so we'll start there. And I brought him
- 40:57up a few weeks ago in my Waiver Wife or waiver Wire column where I
- 41:00was kind of also trying to do this even two weeks earlier than this,
- 41:05of trying to identify some guys who could move at the deadline. And the
- 41:08biggest one I think is noelvi Marte from Cincinnati Red's just mostly because they don't
- 41:15need them, Like there's no space for him and there's no where to put
- 41:19him on the infield diret or the outfield grass right now. They're totally loaded
- 41:24with ces Christian in Carnac that is a mouthful Christian Incarnacione strand coming up.
- 41:34They don't have enough spots for everybody as is, and so nolv Marte.
- 41:40I think every team's going to also know this and probably try to load ball
- 41:44them from NOELV Marte. But the nice thing is the Reds just need back
- 41:47end pitching, so back end of their rotation and building out their bullpens.
- 41:52So it's pretty easy to move Marte for some sort of arm at the deal
- 41:58at the deadline, and I think that's the deal that's going to get done.
- 42:00That Marte is. He's been okay this year that like, I think
- 42:05he's also a little bit of a guy that just has been around for so
- 42:08long that sometimes these guys get bored in the minor leagues. Like Francisco Lindor
- 42:14really reminds me of this, that he kind of got bored in double A
- 42:16and triple A just kind of I think, because he was so much better
- 42:20than everybody that like, it was hard to keep him engaged. So NOELVI
- 42:24was at A one seventeen w RC plus and double A and then got moved
- 42:29to triple A and has been only at an ADWRC plus and fifty one plate
- 42:34appearances there, the strikeout rate has increased to twenty seven and a half percent
- 42:38from seventeen point one percent. But again, I think the talent kind of
- 42:44comes through here, and especially if he finds himself on a team that doesn't
- 42:50have very much to play for down the stretch. He could find himself playing
- 42:52shortstop, third base, h first base, a corner outfield, and that
- 42:58team might just be seeing kind of what they have in him. Yeah.
- 43:01And if I recall, Marte has always been a slow starter prements at every
- 43:05level that he's played out, So I don't put too much stock into the
- 43:08triple A numbers he has right now. I know it's not that great,
- 43:12but he's he's a talented young guy, and you're You're right, it really
- 43:15depends on the landing spot. Makes a lot of sense to see him move
- 43:19if the Reds are going to make a mega splash, and just a matter
- 43:22of where he lands. Yeah, And so I'll let you go over the
- 43:28next dude you want to talk about. Yeah, So it thinks probably one
- 43:30of my favorite targets at this point for picking up a guy who might benefit
- 43:36from a trade comes from the Mets. Uh Mets are in a weird spot.
- 43:40You know, they're not not doing as well as they want to,
- 43:44but I don't think Cohen wants to give up ever. So um, it's
- 43:49gonna be kind of an interesting cell and win now scenario for the New York
- 43:54Mets. But I wouldn't be shocked to see the move Tommy fam or Starley
- 43:59Marte or somebody like that in the outfield and open up some some playing time.
- 44:02And the guy I'm looking at, Ronny Mauricio for the Mets, he's
- 44:07only about ten percent owned, like Yahoo Leagues things like that, and he's
- 44:12been pretty solid down on the miners this year. You know, he's still
- 44:16young, he's just just twenty two at this point, just turned twenty two
- 44:21a few months back. But you know, in Triple A this year,
- 44:24he's hitting just about three hundred, he's fourteen homes and fourteen steals, UH
- 44:30strikeout rate under seventeen. UM. He's just he doesn't having a really really
- 44:36strong year and there's really no reason for them to keep him down in the
- 44:39miners at this point after you know, going twenty twenty last year in in
- 44:45Double A. So he's proven himself and he does deserve it opportunity and I
- 44:50do think, you know, it's you know, funny, I say,
- 44:52trade an outfield and bring up um Mauricio, who's gonna play most likely shortstop.
- 44:58But they have been getting him some ups in the outfield. Uh in
- 45:00Triple A, he's been playing a little bit left field. But also we
- 45:05have like McNeil, Jeff McNeil that might move from from the infield and open
- 45:08up spot. Uh. You know, I don't think Lindoor's going anywhere,
- 45:12but I think that could give him a spot or a chance or you know,
- 45:15play play you know, his second base, because he's been playing second
- 45:19and left mostly in Triple A this year because he just doesn't have a spot
- 45:23to make a debut at short So Rondi Murissio is probably the one guy that
- 45:28I'm really really targeting. This is my gamble for young guys that that might
- 45:34get a chance here right after the trade deadline. Yeah, and I think
- 45:37another I mean, it might not even take the deadline, because are you
- 45:43looking at the roster resource page for the Mets at all? Don't know if
- 45:45you are, because because I haven't really watched too many Mets games as of
- 45:50late, even though they're playing the Socks tonight, I decide not to turn
- 45:53that on after Lucas Julido's terrible for sitting. But do you know who this
- 46:00wrong side platoon DH for the Mets is right now? Oh? I should
- 46:07know, But no, who's the strong side DH is gonna be terrible?
- 46:12It's DJ Stewart. We're talking about the DJ Stewart that couldn't hold it with
- 46:17the Orioles. Yes, in the last few years. Right, that's like
- 46:22I'm looking, I'm there's not even like I don't even he just kind of
- 46:25like is better than Daniel Vogelbach right now, I guess. And so yeah,
- 46:31that's it's a pretty easy spot to like put Ronnie Maurissio a second and
- 46:36then move McNeil to pH Yeah, so what we're talking about trade deadline,
- 46:39No trade deadline. Ronnie Marissio might be up here before too long. And
- 46:43and and he's worth He's worth a gamble for sure. Yeah. And I've
- 46:50got another guy that's another young dude sitting in triple A that I've really kind
- 46:54of fallen in love with him over the past week or so that like us
- 47:00just kind of looking through stats and especially people who have been performing well and
- 47:05have the opportunity is Laurence Butler for the Oakland Days right now. And Laurence
- 47:09Butler, he's a big dude. He's sixty three corner outfielder, but he's
- 47:15just tooled up that he's got tons of hit, tons of game power,
- 47:19tons of speed, that he's a forty five future value on Fangrass prospects for
- 47:23Mark Longenhangen. But he's got a big old fifty current game powder power future
- 47:29sixty with a fifty five speed future sixty speed. And it shows because between
- 47:35Double A and Triple A this year he's got eleven homers and fifteen stolen bases.
- 47:40In Double A he was really like the one thirteen w RC bus doesn't
- 47:45really pop, but he had a two eighty five three fifty two four sixty
- 47:51five slash. Obviously, that league environment is a little bloated right now,
- 47:55but you can't complain about the walk and strike got right either. He had
- 48:00an eighteen point nine strikeout percentage and a nine point four walk percentage in Double
- 48:06A and he's kept those walks going into Triple A. In only three games
- 48:09so far, he's got seven point one walk percentage, so you know it's
- 48:15only fourteen at bats or fourteen plate appearances, but he's already got two steals
- 48:20and a homer in triple A and just everything that you read from a scouting
- 48:23perceptive is huge, and in terms of glowing and looking for him to be
- 48:30a really big piece that, I mean, he's gonna walk into whatever spot
- 48:36kind of opens up in Oakland, I think, and be able to hit
- 48:38the ground running because let me just check real fast. But I'm pretty sure
- 48:40he's on the forty man already, So I don't even even think he requires
- 48:45a move necessarily from like a DFA or cutting standpoint, that they can just
- 48:51move him right up when they open up a spot and he is. So
- 48:54I think he's going to be up if they move literally anybody. Yeah,
- 49:00I mean I don't think it's any mystery that Brett Rooker or Seth Brown or
- 49:05somebody like that is. Yeah. So I no, like, basically the
- 49:13entire lineup outside of Soldier Stimmon lang Leears is on the block at this point,
- 49:21so which is I think very much an Oakland a's uh way of life.
- 49:25So i'd be ready, who's your next guy? Oh? For me?
- 49:30You know, I think the one team that's got probably got the most
- 49:32press at this point as far as selling is. You and I's favorite Saint
- 49:37Louis Cardinals. Um, and it's weird, one of those interesting teams that
- 49:43for all the talent, they have to be in a selling positions. Really
- 49:45interesting because they are stocked with his hitters, lots of good hitters, interesting
- 49:52hitters. They have nobody that pitches besides Jordan Montgomery at this point. Um,
- 49:57you know they're gonna keep rolling out and I'm wayning right until his arm
- 49:59falls off, um, just so he can get a few more wins,
- 50:01hit some milestones there. But uh, you know, I think one of
- 50:06the most likely guys to move is Paul DeJong. Uh for the Cardinals.
- 50:09He's been there, starting, starting shortstop. You know, he's hurt for
- 50:13part of the year. He came back in a flurry of Homer's uh cooled
- 50:17off since then. But you know he's got a very reasonable uh you know
- 50:23spot in the lineup. He can he can field well. Uh, he's
- 50:27a guy that you want to put it in the pinch, but not be
- 50:29the guy you rely on forever. So not gonna be a huge deal.
- 50:32But if they move him, I think Mason Wynn is getting called up.
- 50:37Uh, Mason Wynn is you know, I think when when you think about
- 50:40Mason Wynn, he was drafted just a few years ago. If I recall
- 50:45in that same draft as Jordan Walker, and you know he's only got you
- 50:51know, he's in his third year in the miners. Uh, and you
- 50:53know he's just twenty one years old. Uh. But you know he he's
- 50:58made a lot of highlight reels, you know, just based on his arm
- 51:00and what he can do from that shorts opposition. But he is no slouch
- 51:05at the bat either. You know, he's already in in Triple A this
- 51:08this year, he's got eleven Homer's sixteen steal has only been caught twice,
- 51:14He's said, in two seventy three, a guy that's only strikes up about
- 51:20twice as often as he walks. And so he's getting on base at a
- 51:23pretty solid clip and definitely younger than the rest of that level. So I
- 51:29think he's a guy that they move a few pieces and they call him up
- 51:32to to give him a cameo, to see what they got with him,
- 51:37and in a low pressure environment. So Mason Wynn is definitely a guy that
- 51:44it's worth taking a quick gamble on because you will know here a week or
- 51:47so, and I think the Cardinal is gonna make a number of moves,
- 51:52So playing time is gonna open up for a guy like that, Yeah,
- 51:54definitely. And you gotta love the steals, and so that's his main calling
- 51:59card is the the speed. And I mean he especially I think when he
- 52:02comes up like because I think he doesn't swing the bat terribly hard, but
- 52:07I think he could be a little bit of like a short stop estory refuse
- 52:10almost where he just like has to put the ball in play and use a
- 52:14speed that like he could really emphasize that speed on the base pass as well
- 52:19and just really go hog wild. He's not in the forty man yet,
- 52:23but once you clear out Deyong, like, I would imagine that the Cardinals
- 52:28are going to be bringing back pretty young arms at the deadline, and so
- 52:32I don't think that's going to have to be an issue. The other guy
- 52:37that I was wondering your take on, because I think they probably do trade
- 52:40Tyler O'Neill. What do you think do you think it'll be Mois's Gomez time
- 52:45in Saint Louis to see if we can get a your mean Mercedes like run
- 52:49out of him. You know this kills me to say this, I think
- 52:53it would be I think it's the wrong move. I think they need to
- 52:57let Joan Carlson tried actually have some consistent playing time because that guy is a
- 53:01good fielder, you know, he He's been a average slightly above average hitter
- 53:07when they actually give him the playing time. And so I think they need
- 53:10to get given out far outfield of Carlson, Newt Bart and Walker a chance
- 53:16the rest of the season. Just give him consistent playing time and see see
- 53:20what happens. But this is the Cardinals, and they're gonna tinkers. They
- 53:27drive me nuts with it. They're gonna probably have Alec Burlison, Moyses Gomez
- 53:30up there. Um, they're gonna bring up Mason Winn and they're gonna put
- 53:35Brennan Donovan in the outfield just for fun, just to see what happens.
- 53:38So, Um, you're not probably wrong, as much as it pains me
- 53:43to see. But I do expect a few of those outfielders to move.
- 53:49It does look like Carlson, the rumored untouchable last year, and one Soto
- 53:52trades as much as I do or do not believe that has fallen quite a
- 53:57bit out of favor in Saint Louis. Yeah, and he's been in a
- 54:00weird platoon and it's just like they're just kind of let them waste away.
- 54:04It's been really strange. Yeah, all right, how well one more one
- 54:07more for you on these young young guys with chances of new roles, who
- 54:13do you get? All right, Well, I'm gonna go totally opposite to
- 54:16our bitter rivals, the Chicago Cubs, And so I think the Cubs are
- 54:22gonna sell like they're hanging around and the pithag says they should be better and
- 54:28like they just keep playing in this l central. But I think they're gonna
- 54:34sell that, like Ricketts is going to force their hand to try to move
- 54:37some assets. And it's probably not a terrible idea also because I do think
- 54:44that, like if they do get some nice pieces back, like they're going
- 54:47to be ready to go next year. That there's got a lot of different
- 54:52guys coming up in different arms, and you just got to sign a couple
- 54:55dudes. And I mean they're big enough market to put their hat in the
- 54:59ring for Shohei. So there's not a lot of like murmurs that that could
- 55:04happen, but I wouldn't count them out. But because of that, I
- 55:07think you're looking at probably Stroman going and then if you do, if they
- 55:12do, decide to trade Cody Bellinger and make a profit. There the two
- 55:15dudes I'm looking up looking to come up or Ben Brown, who discussed a
- 55:20little bit last week with our Pitching Fantasy Prospects Draft, and he's still chugging
- 55:27along at Triple A and kind of struggling with those walks and struggling to put
- 55:30it all together. That like, I think it's just kind of maybe also
- 55:34a little bit of like what we were talking about with Noelvi, that like
- 55:37he's probably just kind of tired of hanging out in Iowa and so he's ready
- 55:42to come up and see the big lights. And the other dude is Alexander
- 55:46Canario that I found him a couple of years ago. And the way that
- 55:51I like to find prospects is just to go through the leaderboards and look at
- 55:55aged by w RC plus and just see if there's anybody that really pops.
- 56:01And I remember this year from the it was in low A from twenty nineteen
- 56:07when he was nineteen years old Alexander Canario for the Giants to put up a
- 56:13one fifty two w RC plus and last year he put up a one forty
- 56:17three w RC plus as a twentywo year old in Triple A and it's all
- 56:22swinged and miss. Like he's from what I've read in terms of the scouting
- 56:28reports, like he's super aggressive. He has holes in his swing, but
- 56:30like he kind of reminds me almost as like an Alfonso Soriano or something,
- 56:35where like he makes great contact when he gets hold of it. And so
- 56:38that's why Fan Grass has a thirty grade on his bat but his game power
- 56:44future power they got fifty five and a sixty raw power that like this is
- 56:49a total boomer Bus guy. And like I think, I mean, you're
- 56:52seeing it work with Christopher Morrell and who better to follow in his steps or
- 56:58like to have show you like how this profile can work. Then the Cubs
- 57:02with Christopher were out that like Canario can do the same thing. Yeah,
- 57:07I think the other guy the Cubs might look to move is Kyle Hendricks.
- 57:09I know he's he's like a one is he probably now the most tenured Chicago
- 57:15Cub. I mean he's got to be right at this point. He's been
- 57:16with the club since, you know, for about ten years now, so
- 57:21he's got to be the most tenured guy. But you know, he's in
- 57:23his age thirty three season. I think this is the last year of his
- 57:30contract. He's got a vesting option. I don't I don't know the details
- 57:31on the up top of my head. Uh so, but I have to
- 57:35think that they look to move a guy like Kyle Hendricks. Uh you know,
- 57:38throw back to the nineties with his very massive five point seven four kas
- 57:45per nine. Uh not. We're not targeting Kyle Hendricks to help our our
- 57:50fantasy lineups, but the potential of what opens up there is that place is
- 57:54interesting. He's actually the kind of guy I think the Reds might look to
- 57:58pull in just tolidify the back of that rotation. Yeah, it'll be interesting
- 58:01to see if they pull the trigger on going inside the division for a trade,
- 58:07but especially with like they're gonna be at each other's like next in terms
- 58:13of battling for the innal Central next year, so it would be a good
- 58:16fit. But maybe like maybe some other team trades for Kyle Hendricks and then
- 58:20the Reds get them from that other team or like a three way trade or
- 58:22something. Yeah, something like that. But hey, it's just the Cubs.
- 58:27I'm not gonna hold my birth breast and I understand what's what's going on
- 58:30there. Sometimes okay, well it is closer time then, So those are
- 58:36the guys that we like from getting bigger shares of playing time because they're younger
- 58:40and have exciting pass But now let's go some pretty ugly and unexciting closer pass
- 58:46just because we need saves. I'll let you go with your first one.
- 58:51Who which one is kind of like your most intriguing one and what you're looking
- 58:54at the most Yeah, I think I think the probably the most intriguing guy.
- 59:00I don't know that this, uh. I think all the stars have
- 59:02to lie here, but over in San Diego, I think Josh Hayter might
- 59:07have a chance of getting moved, and wherever Hater goes, he's going to
- 59:10be the closer. That's just I think a given. There's very few places
- 59:15in the league that he can land and not be the guy. So I'm
- 59:19not worried about his role. But Roberts Soarez was kind of lights out last
- 59:23year and kind of his second hand man. He's been hurt most of this
- 59:28year, but he's just coming back now. I think, you know,
- 59:30Nick Martinez probably picks up some saves in the meantime, while Swarez gets right
- 59:35and as Wres, I think has a chance to run without a role and
- 59:37really prove that he's their closure, not just the rest of this year and
- 59:42end the next year. And so I think, you know, my my
- 59:45favorite target was Robert Soarez. I think he's the price of admission is very
- 59:50low. I don't don't. I haven't looked up his ownership percentages here,
- 59:53but I'm guessing it's one. It is a percentage, it is not well
- 1:00:00whole percentage points at this point. So I'm looking at San Diego and saying,
- 1:00:04hey, Josh Hayter might be moved. And you know that San Diego
- 1:00:08team is always willing to shake things up and move things around, uh with
- 1:00:13with Preller over there, So um, let's let's see what happens. How
- 1:00:17about you, who's your guy? You're you're chasing well, and I just
- 1:00:21wanted to on San Diego too, just um, I do I agree with
- 1:00:25you with Hayter, But I mean, honestly, I'm not totally sure who's
- 1:00:30gonna get it. Like Stephen Wilson's having a great year. Tom Cosgrove,
- 1:00:34who who I don't even know who he is, but he has like a
- 1:00:38sub one R and sub one whip and he's from the left side. Tim
- 1:00:43Hill always looks great. Les Garcia has been in a closer role, So
- 1:00:47I do think that Hayter is gonna get moved if they don't go on a
- 1:00:51hot streak here. But I'm not sure who to target. If I'm being
- 1:00:55perfectly honest with you, Yeah, I agree. Uh, it's it's not
- 1:01:00a guarantee. But that's why I'm looking at Suarez going if there's one guy
- 1:01:05that could that could has that mentality, I think he's it. I think
- 1:01:10I feel like Tim Guys like Tim Hill. Hill has been putting that position
- 1:01:14so many guts darned times that he crumbles every time he gets there. Um,
- 1:01:19you know, guys, would be really interesting to see there's a Brent
- 1:01:21Honeywell. I think that would be really interesting to see a guy like that.
- 1:01:24They used him a lot in more when they're from behind, or like
- 1:01:28when they're loosing, or like they have like kind of mop up innings.
- 1:01:31So yeah, he's kind of the long relief you know Phil Filler, but
- 1:01:36I just love Brent honeywell for some reason. Yet scall that maybe that's just
- 1:01:42I want to see a closer with a screwball. Yeah, um so yeah.
- 1:01:45I think the one that I like the most right now for somebody who
- 1:01:49could be closing in two weeks time is Gregory Santos from the White Sox.
- 1:01:53So I know he's like fifth on the depth chart for relief pictures right out
- 1:02:00because in front of him right now is Graveman, Lopez, Middleton Bummer technically,
- 1:02:06and so yeah, he'd be fifth. And then obviously you've got William
- 1:02:09Hendricks coming back, and Joe Kelly's on the shelf too. But of those,
- 1:02:15I wouldn't be surprised if Joe Kelly, Kendall, Graveman, Rainaldo Lopez,
- 1:02:21and Kenyon Middleton all are out the door. And so I think that
- 1:02:25like this White Sex team might clear house and it's gonna be ugly, man,
- 1:02:30It's gonna be so ugly because especially if they trade, if they trade
- 1:02:36Gilito and lance Lynn, I mean, Geeledo's probably got to go, and
- 1:02:38I think they trade lance Lynn too. Yeah, Jesse Shulton's will be starting,
- 1:02:45I guess Clevenger's coming back, but this team has no pitching, so
- 1:02:50there's nobody coming up from Triple A to take Santos's job. And he's looked
- 1:02:52really great this year, like he's just kind of been super solid in his
- 1:02:58kind of seventh eighth inning role. And um, I used to confuse him
- 1:03:01all the time with Jose Ruise when those guys were in the bullpen together,
- 1:03:05but Santos is far superior to Ruise. And so he's got eight seven five
- 1:03:10K nine two sixty six r RA right now, and just he's got the
- 1:03:15bound presence to be a closer that I think he's gonna be the last man's
- 1:03:20standing in Chicago after the entire bullpen gets gutted, because I don't see why
- 1:03:23the White Socks have any need for any of those guys. Yeah, and
- 1:03:28he looks prototypical closer, right. He's a fastball slider from ninety eight up
- 1:03:32there. With with his fastball, they'd probably touching the ninety nine. You're
- 1:03:36you're the White Sox guy. I have to imagine he's hit triple digits.
- 1:03:39But so he definitely looks the part. The question I have is what Liam
- 1:03:44Hendricks is he is he going to come back to for him. I mean,
- 1:03:47I give the guy credit. He's he's battled a lot over the last
- 1:03:52year, and so everybody's rooting for him, and you know, he had
- 1:03:55a wonderful speech the other day. Yeah, it's great. But you know,
- 1:04:00do you think Hendris gets back to form this year or do you think
- 1:04:04somebody like Santos has a chance to run with the role and make it his.
- 1:04:10Yeah, I'm worried about Liam's elbow, to be honest, considering that
- 1:04:14he was out last year with that like forum inflammation that looked like it was
- 1:04:17going to be Tommy John and now he's got the elbow issue that, like,
- 1:04:21I think he's not in great shape. So I'm not sure. Liam
- 1:04:26still doesn't have like a great timeline for a return. And I mean,
- 1:04:30obviously he's made a miraculous return from the non hodgkins On and FOMA and everything,
- 1:04:35but I think he still needs like another year just to kind of get
- 1:04:40his feet underneath him. And I think they'll let Santos take that job,
- 1:04:45And honestly, if Liam's healthy, they might trade him anyway, because like
- 1:04:49the market for relievers is going to be these guys are rattling off except for
- 1:04:57Hayter, Like the rest of them aren't terribly exciting. And so if Liam
- 1:05:02is healthy, like the White Socks need to do the best to kind of
- 1:05:06make over this team on they can. Yeah, I'm with you. I
- 1:05:12don't think Hendrix gets healthy in time for the trade deadline. But you're right,
- 1:05:16it's either they want to give him the time and give him a chance
- 1:05:19to get back to who he was and then cash in on that chip later.
- 1:05:24So all right, who's here next one? What's the next situation you're
- 1:05:28looking at? Well? I think that the next one for me, and
- 1:05:30I'm going back to the well that we talked about earlier, back to Saint
- 1:05:32Louis. We talked about there being a lack of pitching, and I didn't
- 1:05:36need to clarify a lack of starting pitching in Saint Louis. They do have
- 1:05:41a number of guys in the bullpen that are that are interesting. I think
- 1:05:45the number one is the one that's put on display right now is Jordan Hicks.
- 1:05:49Jordan Hicks to me, is a wild card. Every time he takes
- 1:05:54the mound. He reminds me a little bit of Trevor Rosenthal when he was
- 1:05:56with the Cardinals. Um, you knew he was going to throw it hard.
- 1:06:00Nobody including him knew where it was going. Uh. So I think
- 1:06:03you know, Hicks, though his has looked lights out for the last you
- 1:06:05know, a few weeks, UM, maybe even a little longer, he's
- 1:06:10got that role. So I think that there's a high likelihood. I'm I'm
- 1:06:15putting seventy eighty percent likelihood that Hicks is out of out of Saint Louis here
- 1:06:18within the next four or five days. Um. And uh Giovanni Diaegos is
- 1:06:25gonna inherit that role until Ryan Helsley is healthy. Uh Diaegos, Um.
- 1:06:30I don't think Saint Louis is gonna move Diaegos. Uh. It seems he
- 1:06:33seems to be one of those guys that they just love. Um. He's
- 1:06:36consistent, he's not flashy anything like that. So I think they're gonna hold
- 1:06:41him. I don't know it's the right move, but I think they're gonna
- 1:06:43They're gonna hold Diegos. And if you're looking for a short, short term
- 1:06:46and I'm not sure whin Helsley is gonna get back, I think Diaegos can
- 1:06:50pick up a number of saves here probably the next month, gotcha? Yeah,
- 1:06:56I agree that. Like if Gagos doesn't move that, I'm I don't
- 1:07:00even think I want anybody else left in that pin. So you Ryan Tapero.
- 1:07:04They picked him up. He looked fantastic yesterday. Sorry sarcasm, very
- 1:07:11very dry. VP voter, MVP vote getter. Yes, was all right.
- 1:07:17How about you? Who else you got on your list? I mean,
- 1:07:20so it's time to go back to Oakland? I mean Trevor May is
- 1:07:25gone. He wasn't signed to a one year free agent deal. I think
- 1:07:29correct. Let me check that it's either one or two, but like I
- 1:07:32think it was I think it was one. Yeah, Trevor May is gone.
- 1:07:35Um yeah, their two dudes who could get it. One is much
- 1:07:40more exciting than other. Cintaro Fujinami is the exciting one. Even though he
- 1:07:44has the terrible stats. He's been absolutely lights out as of late that just
- 1:07:49watching him, he looks so much more electric out of the bullpen in the
- 1:07:55month of July and seven innings he's got a here's the slash line he's allowed
- 1:08:00is one thirty six, one seventy four, three eighteen with ten k's to
- 1:08:04one walk. He looks fantastic. Let's hope he gets it. They have
- 1:08:10been using him in like a longer relief role. And then if he doesn't
- 1:08:13get it, I think the other person that could would be Lucas Ersigum just
- 1:08:18I don't know if there's nobody else in that pen, like it's a it's
- 1:08:21a weird pen. And so Lucas he currently has a thirteen point one K
- 1:08:28nine. The walks are a little high and the air is a little high.
- 1:08:31They' actually both at five eight eight. But he's got great stuff.
- 1:08:36He's got the classic kind of fastball slider combo. And so I think I
- 1:08:42would, honestly, I would pick up Fujinami because like he's been great enough
- 1:08:45as of late that he could just be a bulk reliever option. And but
- 1:08:50Ersig I would keep in the back of my mind in case you hear any
- 1:08:54rumblings that Fujinami might not get it. But here's the one I'm gonna have
- 1:08:58to finally disagree with you on. Okay, it's it's not gonna be either
- 1:09:01of those guys. Is the closer. It's gonna be Danny Jimenez. Uh,
- 1:09:05he's just coming back. He just got his first rehab appearance set today.
- 1:09:11Um, and he's gonna go back to Triple A Las Vegas, which
- 1:09:14is probably gonna be wonderful for his confidence. And I'm pretty sure sure things
- 1:09:16just fly on that out of that ballpark there. But he's he's getting his
- 1:09:21first rehab appearance after doing some live VP sessions. And this is a guy
- 1:09:28that just last year had eleven says for him, Um with you know a
- 1:09:31three four one r a one one point two whip. Uh, he looked
- 1:09:36closer worthy. Um he has. He's only made a whole six and two
- 1:09:41thirds of innings this year, so I'm not sure how much there is a
- 1:09:46ramp up he needs. But I think Danny Menez actually comes back and claims
- 1:09:50that that closure role because you know, they want to see what they got
- 1:09:54the young guy there. Uh. And it looked like just last year that
- 1:09:58they were going to invest him as their cloth or the future. Yeah,
- 1:10:00we'll get you. Looking at those Las Vegas game notes, I didn't actually
- 1:10:03know he's coming back. I mean the other thing that does make me think
- 1:10:06though, is that if they get him rehabbed, him back into the majors
- 1:10:12by August first, he might be gone too. I don't think that you're
- 1:10:16gonna get him back that quickly, but you're not wrong. Yeah, So
- 1:10:21we'll put our bets down and we'll see at the end of the season who
- 1:10:25has the most saves from their Oakland Athletics predicted closers. I think it's gonna
- 1:10:29be a one to nothing. It's gonna be like one to one to one.
- 1:10:35They have to win a game to get some saves. Well, oh
- 1:10:38yeah exactly. I mean yeah, they have twenty five wins. It's terrible.
- 1:10:42Um, all right, one more quick one, YEA one more quick
- 1:10:45one for me. I think going out to Detroit, I think Jason Fooley
- 1:10:49starts picking up some says. We already seeing him get a little bit of
- 1:10:53action so far in the last few weeks here. But I think Alex Lang
- 1:11:00I think is actually incredibly talented uh again, has some control issues. I
- 1:11:03think he's a guy that is likely on the move. I think it's time
- 1:11:08for Detroit to to cash in on him. He's he's not gonna be a
- 1:11:10closer. Probably wherever he goes, he's going to be, you know,
- 1:11:13that seventh eighth inning guy that some somebody's looking at uh to to bring in.
- 1:11:17So I think that you know fully ends up uh catching you know,
- 1:11:23catching that job uh in in Detroit. Um, I don't think that they
- 1:11:29move him. You know, he's only got like a year of service time,
- 1:11:31so they've got a little bit of a time with him to try things
- 1:11:34out, and he's been he's been looking very solid overall, uh for for
- 1:11:41for the Tigers. So uh yeah, he's he might already be picked up
- 1:11:44in your league, but if not, he's a he's a very good gamble
- 1:11:47uh to take at this point, and he's not gonna hurt you even if
- 1:11:49you just have him as a miner relief option. A guy that's been very
- 1:11:55very solid this year, uh surprising for a closer type guy. He's he's
- 1:12:00walking less than two guys per nine and he did that last year too,
- 1:12:02So that's definitely intriguing for a guy that can get groundballs and control the controller
- 1:12:09on the back end. I remember the last time Detroit had a closure that
- 1:12:13didn't look like they were going to uploade every other every other outing. So
- 1:12:17yeah, and then I've got two quick ones here to wrap us up with
- 1:12:24the Royals. With Scott Barlow, he's probably out the door and much again
- 1:12:28a last man standing source of situation. Carlos Hernandez is there. He's been
- 1:12:32pitching in the setup role. Like I know who's a Kuas is there,
- 1:12:35but Carlos Hernandez. They've been clearly trying to train him up for this role.
- 1:12:42He's got a great strikeout right right now at ten point two per nine
- 1:12:47and two and a half walks per nine three eight six c A, but
- 1:12:50only have a two eight or two sixty eight fifth that He's been a great
- 1:12:56picture and I think he's going to be a great option. I've suggested him
- 1:12:59as a pickup for just a relief option if you need innings, and I
- 1:13:01think you can keep rolling with him because he's gonna get that closer job.
- 1:13:05The last one is going to be just the Mets. I think the Mets
- 1:13:10are going to clean house like the Socks. We'll see where they go.
- 1:13:13But it kind of leaves Brooks Raley and Drew Smith and I don't know if
- 1:13:15I'm really interested in either, but one of those dudes is probably gonna end
- 1:13:19up being the closer. Yeah, I'm not sure. I'm not really dearly
- 1:13:23excited about anything there. I think we're just gonna pack it in for the
- 1:13:26bets at this point and come back next year. Yep, let's go Mets.
- 1:13:31But yeah, I think with that we'll wrap it up for the week,
- 1:13:33and Jeremy thanks again for joining. And next week we'll probably be back
- 1:13:40with a little bit more trade deadline talk as it won't have to happened,
