- 0:04SPEAKER_02: Hey, I'm Matt.
- 0:05SPEAKER_02: I'm a Jesus follower,
- 0:06SPEAKER_02: husband,
- 0:07SPEAKER_02: father,
- 0:07SPEAKER_02: son,
- 0:08SPEAKER_02: and friend who is super curious about topics like parenthood,
- 0:11SPEAKER_02: creativity,
- 0:12SPEAKER_02: and the tension between ambition and contentment,
- 0:14SPEAKER_02: all while living in the distraction of the 21st century.
- 0:17These conversations serve as a way for me to hear from people I
- 0:20deeply respect on
- 0:22SPEAKER_02: topics that I'm still learning about.
- 0:24Can you give me 10 seconds of your time to ask if you could
- 0:28share,
- 0:28follow,
- 0:29and review?
- 0:29It would be a great help to make these conversations more
- 0:32discoverable for
- 0:33SPEAKER_02: like-minded creatives.
- 0:34SPEAKER_02: My goal is to continue to make these as best as I can and bring relevant
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: conversations to you that you'll find interesting.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: Thanks for listening.
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: It seriously means so much to me.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: Today, I'm joined by my friend Seth Kayser.
- 0:46He's a husband and father and entrepreneur who runs a school
- 0:49called Kayser Arts and
- 0:50a nonprofit called Global Creation Foundation that teaches
- 0:53music and brings music
- 0:55SPEAKER_02: education to places like Uganda and Nepal.
- 0:57SPEAKER_02: We talk about capacity and entrepreneurship,
- 0:59being married to another entrepreneur and his mission to
- 1:02continually inspire others
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: to live their purposes.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: He's just full of life.
- 1:06SPEAKER_02: I had the best time talking with him and I hope you enjoy.
- 1:09SPEAKER_02: Thanks for,
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: uh,
- 1:10thanks for taking the time today to have a conversation in your
- 1:14parents' backyard.
- 1:15It's beautiful here and we get to enjoy this garden and I feel
- 1:20very springish,
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: especially now that we've,
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: uh,
- 1:25SPEAKER_02: We lost an hour, so we sprung forward.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: Is that how that works?
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: I think that's how it works.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: I didn't know that it happened until we were late to church on Sunday.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: And church service was closing, and you were like, wait, wait.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: You're like, guys, what are you talking about?
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's hilarious.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: Didn't set the clock the right way.
- 1:46SPEAKER_02: Well,
- 1:46SPEAKER_02: for those that don't know who this guy is,
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: his name is Seth,
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: and he's a good friend of mine,
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: and we've gotten to know each other over the last
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: probably like three-ish years.
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:56SPEAKER_02: Crazy.
- 1:57SPEAKER_02: And I just,
- 1:59I look up to you in a lot of ways when it comes to just like
- 2:02the amount that you
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: get done and
- 2:05the intentional genuine kind decent wonderful human being that
- 2:10you are when with
- 2:13just like relationship in general you always seem available
- 2:17even though you have
- 2:17like bajillions of things going on and despite being like a
- 2:23really present father
- 2:24and business owner and husband and stuff like somehow always
- 2:28have like I mean we've
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: been hanging out for like the last
- 2:33close to five hours and so it's just like uh i think that's a
- 2:37testament to like who
- 2:38you are as a person um that you're available for these types of
- 2:41things so um i'm
- 2:43just super grateful to get to have a conversation with you and
- 2:46to hear more about
- 2:48kind of your journey with those things that i'm like inspired
- 2:53about you for you
- 2:54SPEAKER_02: know um whether it's your marriage and and
- 2:58kind of how you bring a lot of your entrepreneurial business
- 3:02acumen into that.
- 3:03SPEAKER_02: And like Lauren is also an entrepreneur.
- 3:05And so like how you guys juggle that,
- 3:07but also then have two kids and like,
- 3:12I don't know.
- 3:12I think that's like my first question is you have like deep
- 3:16capacity to do a lot of things.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: You're like a nonprofit leader.
- 3:21You have your own nonprofit and like multiple businesses that
- 3:25you're running.
- 3:27um do you feel like you're like juggling or uh i don't know
- 3:30like how do you feel
- 3:32like you can do everything um yeah where do you think that
- 3:36capacity comes from yeah
- 3:37well first of all dude that's a hell of an intro thank you um
- 3:42anytime man i i mean
- 3:46juggling is the word that's that's what it's um to to the point
- 3:50where actually you
- 3:52saying i don't know if i've told you this or not but it's like
- 3:55really the last
- 3:57month to two months maybe um i've been using that word a lot
- 4:03more and i wrote a
- 4:07song that's called juggling it's literally about awesome that
- 4:12whole can you spit
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: out a couple bars for us
- 4:15It says entrepreneurship,
- 4:18two kids,
- 4:19marriage,
- 4:20think I'm addicted to the tension.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: Weekends don't really exist anymore.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: Answering emails 10 p.m.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: on a Saturday night.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: Oh, what a time.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: Think I said yes too many times.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: Amazing.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: But I'm so grateful.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: Oh, my gosh.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: But just the whole concept of juggling.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: That's how it feels.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: And I think...
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: I actually had a conversation with David Orgel.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: He's been coming up in our podcast recording today quite a bit.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: What a guy, David.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: But we were talking about it and he said,
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: when you think about juggling,
- 5:00I think that sometimes we think about somebody that's like
- 5:04dropping all the balls
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: and is like,
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: it's all falling apart when I say,
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: oh yeah,
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: life feels like juggling right now.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: But really, I don't necessarily think that's how it feels.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: It doesn't feel like I'm
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: dropping all these balls and shattering all these things,
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: it just feels like it is a constant,
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: I'm having to keep multiple things up in the air.
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: Well, and juggling is a form of entertainment, you know?
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: Like the circus that is your life.
- 5:29SPEAKER_02: It's entertaining to people.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: Oh, I love it.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: I mean, yeah, it's quite a lot.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: And I think that
- 5:41oftentimes it can feel overwhelming yeah when i think about the
- 5:47to-do list of
- 5:48things that needs to get done but i think at least from the
- 5:51outside looking in like
- 5:54you get it done and i think that's what's like so confusing to
- 5:58me is like how do
- 5:59SPEAKER_02: you be available and also get it done like
- 6:04SPEAKER_02: I don't know,
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: if I was in your shoes,
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: I would be like,
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: well,
- 6:07SPEAKER_02: I have a very strict timeline and I can only see Matt for an hour today.
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: And then, like, I need to do a million other things.
- 6:15SPEAKER_02: Like, how are you still getting everything?
- 6:18SPEAKER_02: Is it the line in your song, like, emails, 10 p.m.?
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: I mean,
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: it's really,
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: I think it's something where,
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: um,
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: this answer is not,
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: I'm not saying this is a good answer.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: But I think it's the truthful answer.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: I want to be honest.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: I'm,
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: I,
- 6:34I feel as though I'm very good at procrastinating and very good
- 6:40at getting stuff
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: done when it needs to get done and not prior.
- 6:45SPEAKER_02: I feel like
- 6:46that almost is like an entrepreneurial skill thing like unless
- 6:51there's some sort of
- 6:52pressure or tension or urgency like the and and i always think
- 6:56about like the
- 6:57quadrant i think it's uh i forget like what business leader i
- 7:00think it's like
- 7:01stephen covey or something it's like the uh urgent and
- 7:05unimportant uh like
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: non-urgent and important uh like
- 7:13urgent and non-important I don't know it's I I'll reference it
- 7:17in the show notes or
- 7:18something but it's like that would probably be very helpful but
- 7:23I think like that
- 7:25is I don't know oftentimes like the most important things are
- 7:29not the most urgent
- 7:31things and the most urgent things are often like not the most
- 7:35important things and
- 7:36SPEAKER_02: I feel like as a
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: I don't know,
- 7:40SPEAKER_02: as someone looking from the outside in on your experience,
- 7:43it feels like you're really good at doing the most important
- 7:48things and kind of
- 7:50SPEAKER_02: neglecting the non-urgent,
- 7:53SPEAKER_02: unimportant things.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: But maybe I'm just not reading that right.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: I really,
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: I really feel as though,
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: um,
- 8:08like I could tell you five things off the top of my head right
- 8:11now that I should be
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: doing that I'm choosing to not do because I want to be here more.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: Hmm.
- 8:19And the best part about being an entrepreneur is truthfully,
- 8:24I get to do that.
- 8:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: The other stuff still has to happen.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: The other stuff still has to happen.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: And as the deadline for those things approaches, it will get done 100%.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: And also...
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: delegation of those things is really, really important as well.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: There's also,
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: I mean,
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: from John Piper,
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: who's a fantastic pastor,
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: has this quote,
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: I got it tattooed on my arm,
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: literally the day after hearing it,
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: because I was like,
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: that's a life-changing quote.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: I'm never gonna forget it.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: He says, the man that wants, the man that needs to see a tree fall
- 9:07every single time he picks up the ax,
- 9:10we'll never accomplish great things.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: But the man who realizes that small,
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: well-placed chops repeated over a long period of time,
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: that man,
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: he will see giants fall.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: And this whole concept of like,
- 9:30there are certain things where sometimes it feels like I need
- 9:33to get this entire
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: task done in one sitting.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: And I try to do that so often.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: And it just doesn't happen that way sometimes.
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: I resonate so hard with that.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: But for example,
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: one of the things on the nonprofit side that I'm doing right now is we're
- 9:49developing this whole training program for music teachers
- 9:55around the world
- 9:57to it's called trauma-informed music education it's a big thing
- 10:01that i'm really
- 10:02working on right now and that just so happens to spell out time
- 10:06i did not plan it
- 10:07so epic wild but um trauma-informed music education what is
- 10:13that i have to write
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: the manual for it yeah and so i have been slowly chopping
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: at this manual and it feels like writing a book, Matt.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: That's how it feels really.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: It's a 10,000 words at this point and 42 pages and I love it.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: And it's 90% done, but it's been 90% done for far too long.
- 10:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: What in the world?
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: Siri going off right now, dude.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: Um,
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: And I think like in my mind,
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: that's something that every day I wake up and I think,
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: oh man,
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: I gotta get that done.
- 10:54But it's,
- 10:54like you said,
- 10:55it's an important task,
- 10:56but it's not an urgent and important task.
- 10:59It's a task that needs to get done soon,
- 11:03but not right now,
- 11:05otherwise the world crumbles,
- 11:06right?
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: And so,
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: yeah,
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: and I think it's also one of those things,
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: now we have our first son,
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: his name's Dougie,
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: and Dougie is special needs.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: He's got some pretty severe brain abnormalities,
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: And it's been a really different road for us than what we expected.
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: And so he's about to turn two.
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: And he requires hands on him all day long.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: And a lot of time and energy and effort.
- 11:43It's something that in the busy schedules of being my wife is
- 11:47something that is
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: sometimes it can be a little bit frustrating to be like,
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: man,
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: I like somebody has to be with him all the time.
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: He can't self and he can't entertain himself in these different things.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: But it's also just a blessing from the Lord,
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: honestly,
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: because I really do think that Dougie was given to me and my wife as a.
- 12:12a chance and an opportunity and a consistent call to slow down
- 12:18and to appreciate the simple.
- 12:25And my wife,
- 12:30when Dougie was,
- 12:32when he wasn't born yet,
- 12:34she had this dream of him in a field.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: like a grassy field, just sitting on the grass and touching the grass.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: And
- 12:47that has been this consistent picture that keeps coming back
- 12:51and back and back.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: When we get to spend time with Doug,
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: we'll sit down on the grass or on the sand or,
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: somewhere and just kind of take it in.
- 13:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: And that's something that is extremely hard for me to do naturally,
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: but Dougie makes me have to do that.
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 13:11SPEAKER_02: I resonate.
- 13:12SPEAKER_02: I, I, yeah, I resonate hardcore with that where it's like,
- 13:16uh my natural uh pace and like rpm in in my like engine so to
- 13:25speak is like are we
- 13:27are we like in the seven to eight range like are we are we
- 13:31pushing the limit of
- 13:32like what capacity we have um and i think just in general as
- 13:38like a new parent
- 13:40so much of the lesson that you're learning is just like how do
- 13:43you slow down well
- 13:45but like you're learning that on a whole other level with with
- 13:49the journey that you
- 13:49guys have gone on with him um well and just even like i don't
- 13:53know the i'm assuming
- 13:55there's lots of challenge but then there's the beauty of those
- 13:58moments where you're
- 14:00SPEAKER_02: actually like
- 14:01present enough to be like oh i i get it like yeah we've we've
- 14:06arrived in in some
- 14:07way um but i think my tendency is is probably similar to yours
- 14:12where it's like man
- 14:13it's it's like boring being in this situation instead of like
- 14:18oh man i'm i'm so
- 14:19blessed that i get to be in this situation um yeah no i
- 14:24resonate a lot with that
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: yeah yeah
- 14:28well was that did that answer your question i'm sorry yeah i
- 14:31think you asked how
- 14:32how i how do you have like how do you use the deep capacity and
- 14:36where did that come
- 14:37from um even like uh from your upbringing or um we talked a
- 14:43little bit about like
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: how many things you're juggling and how you're doing that but um
- 14:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think that did get at the heart of my question.
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: I'm sure we could go into more detail.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: But I think also just to talk about upbringing a little bit,
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: my parents,
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: I was homeschooled all the way through.
- 14:59And one of the things with homeschooling is that I think that
- 15:02there's a level of
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: independence and a level of...
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: of responsibility that's placed on you at a younger age to be like,
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: Hey man,
- 15:15like you are the one that dictates how long your school day is
- 15:18because you need to
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: get the work done and it's up to you to do it.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: And I mean, my experience,
- 15:25when i got into eighth grade and into high school we started
- 15:29taking outside classes
- 15:30yeah where it was almost like a college um sort of thing we
- 15:34would go to class once
- 15:35a week yeah and it was then on me it was my responsibility to
- 15:39get all of that work
- 15:41done before the next week yeah otherwise i would fail yeah and
- 15:46that happened at a
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: young age a lot younger than a lot of people are used to and it
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: it kind of bred within me just an independence.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: And it's also,
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: I mean,
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: my,
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: my mom and my dad,
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: both,
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: they just have a work ethic that was just modeled so well for me.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: And, um, I'm just really, really grateful for that.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: My dad taught me to, uh,
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: to work and to provide and to labor hard.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: Honestly,
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: when it comes to entrepreneurial stuff,
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: my parents talk about me when I was seven,
- 16:25walking around the neighborhood and knocking on doors and
- 16:27selling people pencils.
- 16:29nice and what are we talking number twos are we talking i
- 16:33probably didn't even know
- 16:34that i had big old glasses and i was walking around and going
- 16:38really i cannot
- 16:39picture you with glasses oh i mean i i mean i could talk about
- 16:44that all day long i
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: was born with eyes that were um horribly bad oh okay and um so
- 16:55SPEAKER_01: When I went to, my first time going to the eye doctor, I was seven.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: And the doctor basically took the whole thing,
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: did everything,
- 17:06and my mom thought I was faking because of how bad I was doing
- 17:10on the test.
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: And the doctor said,
- 17:13SPEAKER_01: Nancy,
- 17:13SPEAKER_01: that's my mom's name,
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: I'm surprised he can read or write his own name.
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: I have never given a prescription this high to somebody under 18.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: And so I had big old Coke bottle glasses.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: Later,
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: I mean,
- 17:31when Dougie was born and he had all of his brain abnormality
- 17:35stuff and they started
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: doing some genetic testing,
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: they found out that I have a gene called Col4A1.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: And Col4A1 affects the brain, eyes, heart, and kidneys.
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: And it is a gene that did not come from my parents.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: It was one that happened in me.
- 17:53When sperm met egg,
- 17:55God chose to make call 41 happen,
- 17:58that genetic mutation.
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: But it only affected part of my cells.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: So my real title, are you ready for this?
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: I'm called a mosaic mutant.
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: Because it only affected part of my cells.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: And the part of my cells that it affected was my eyes.
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: So when I was 20...
- 18:17And I got into junior highs when I started wearing contacts all
- 18:20the time.
- 18:20SPEAKER_01: And, you know, that boosted my coolness factor by quite a bit.
- 18:24Dude,
- 18:24you're the king of cool,
- 18:25which is why I think it's weird to picture you with glasses.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: I mean, when I was 7, 8, 9, 10, I would carry around an atlas.
- 18:38with my big old coke bottle glasses and i would walk around at
- 18:42parties my parents
- 18:43would tell me this um and i would point onto the atlas and show
- 18:48people where sri
- 18:48lanka was that was i was fascinated with sri lanka at that
- 18:52point because i my my
- 18:54dad was a missions pastor too so growing up i was always
- 18:58exposed to missions work
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: and
- 19:00um my first time out of the country uh i went to nepal and i
- 19:06was nine wow and it
- 19:09was an awesome experience but uh i thought i was going to be a
- 19:12missionary to sri
- 19:13lanka and who knows and you wanted to tell as many people about
- 19:17it i wanted to tell
- 19:17as many people about it as possible which who knows maybe
- 19:20someday that's i'll end
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: up in sri lanka well i mean you're kind of
- 19:24SPEAKER_02: on some level already doing some version of that.
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: I'm assuming that GCF stuff is gonna end in Sri Lanka.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: That's the take over the world stuff.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: But,
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: I mean,
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: when I was 20 is when I,
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: the dream of every kid with glasses,
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: if you don't know this,
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: okay?
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: Dream of every kid with glasses is to one day get a magical surgery.
- 19:52SPEAKER_01: It's called LASIK.
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: And it makes all your problems go away.
- 19:55SPEAKER_01: And you can see like a real boy.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: It's the Pinocchio side of things.
- 20:02SPEAKER_01: Seriously, that's the dream of every kid with bad eyesight.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:05SPEAKER_02: That's the dream with terrible hearing, too.
- 20:08SPEAKER_02: There's a magic.
- 20:09And I haven't done the research,
- 20:11but there's a magic surgery that will just make hearing great.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: And so I went in for a LASIK consultation.
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: And,
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: um,
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: if you don't know,
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: there's a machine,
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: uh,
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: that,
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: that basically like measures the,
- 20:25SPEAKER_01: um,
- 20:25SPEAKER_01: pressure buildup in your eye.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 20:27And it takes like an image of your eye and it's the one that
- 20:29goes,
- 20:30it's the puff.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: And, um, so there's a little, uh, um,
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: what do you call it?
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: Like a hot air balloon that you look at.
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: Is there a little red hot air balloon?
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: And they go, okay, look at that.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: And okay, blink, blink, blink.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: Boom.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: And they puff you with this little thing.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: And that's how they measure.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: Sounds startling.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: And it's,
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: it's a little jarring,
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: but,
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: um,
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: they,
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: I went in,
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: they did it on my left eye and my right eye.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: And they did my right eye again.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: And they did my right eye again.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: And they did my right eye again.
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: And they're like, okay.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: Um,
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: Awesome, we'll come back into the room.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: So we go into the room and I look over at the screen.
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: I'll never forget this.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: I look over at the screen and there's two images.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: You can tell that it's an eyeball.
- 21:19SPEAKER_01: It's kind of spherical and all these things.
- 21:22One of them looks totally normal and the other one has a big
- 21:25black spot in the middle of it.
- 21:31was like very wrong well that was that's there and i look over
- 21:34and go what is that
- 21:36and the nurse that's someone else's eye no the nurse goes well
- 21:39the doctor's going
- 21:40to talk with you about that come on you're like that's never a
- 21:43good answer oh man
- 21:44and so the doctor comes in and he goes have you ever
- 21:48experienced any severe trauma
- 21:49to the left side of your face and this is at it's another story
- 21:53i can get into it
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: as well too but when i was 11
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: I got hit by a car and shattered this side of my face, basically.
- 22:02SPEAKER_02: Dude, I don't think I knew that.
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was gnarly.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: So shattered my jaw on this side,
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: broke my jaw on this side,
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: cracked my 12th vertebrae,
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: fractured my 12th vertebrae.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: And crazy, crazy thing.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: It's like a miracle you're alive.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: Wasn't wearing a helmet, major concussion.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: And the only thing I got to show for it, and they got a bump on my lip.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: It's still there.
- 22:26SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: And it's crazy.
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: But I was like, yeah, I got hit by a car when I was 11.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: And he goes, okay, maybe that explains it.
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: But he goes,
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: you have a level three cataract on your right eye,
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: which is the highest level of cataract that there is.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: And it basically means that all color is gone from your eye.
- 22:45SPEAKER_01: And you are technically legally blind in your right eye.
- 22:49SPEAKER_01: Whoa.
- 22:50And he goes,
- 22:51but your brain is amazing and it compensates for that blindness
- 22:58in your right eye.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: He goes, but here's the good news.
- 23:02We can do cataract surgery on you and take out the corrupted
- 23:06lens of your eye and
- 23:07SPEAKER_01: put in a new lens.
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: And with that new lens,
- 23:10we can customize it to account for your stigmatism and for your
- 23:14prescription.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: And so I went in and I got double cataract surgery.
- 23:20SPEAKER_02: And you're 11 at this point.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: When I was 20.
- 23:22SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: I got hit by the car when I was 11.
- 23:25SPEAKER_01: Went in for the LASIK surgery when I was 20.
- 23:27SPEAKER_01: And they did double cataract surgery.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: And so if you ever see a weird gleam in my eye,
- 23:33SPEAKER_01: like in the back of my eye,
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: that's because I have artificial lenses.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: So if you take a flashlight.
- 23:39SPEAKER_02: I thought that was just the magic of your eyes.
- 23:42Get out of here, bro.
- 23:44No,
- 23:44if you take a flashlight and go over my eye,
- 23:46it's like a cat,
- 23:47like it reflects.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: It's really interesting.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: Did they take a lens from a cat?
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: That's what it is.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: And now you have nine lives.
- 23:57SPEAKER_01: And now I have nine lives.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: Whoa.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: So now my vision is better.
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: But I still, I have a really tough time reading.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: Huh.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: And so when I say I read all these books.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: Because I quote books a lot.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: I audiobook everything.
- 24:15SPEAKER_02: I tell the same lie.
- 24:18That when I read a book,
- 24:19oftentimes I am listening to the book at two times speed.
- 24:23because of my personality and the fact that I,
- 24:27I find it very challenging to slow down.
- 24:29Um,
- 24:30but yes,
- 24:30I think audible is like one of the best products ever created.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: It's just like, oh, it's so nice to be able to.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: I also like, I'll show you on, on my phone.
- 24:41Um,
- 24:42like this is,
- 24:42uh,
- 24:44somebody just sent a scripture in our,
- 24:45in our group text.
- 24:46SPEAKER_01: This is how I would read this.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: I wouldn't actually read it.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: I would select it and I would hit speak.
- 24:53yeah and that is 10 times faster than i can read yeah so all my
- 24:58emails i'll do that
- 24:59way yeah all these things i do this way that's the beauty of so
- 25:02many of the
- 25:03accessibility features and it's it's honestly something where
- 25:06again like our family
- 25:09phrase okay and it's it's the name of my podcast but it's it's
- 25:13also just our family
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: phrase is we say pivot or die and it's something where each of us
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: We have to pivot to the way that we learn.
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: We have to change and adapt to the way that we learn.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: And so for me, vision has always been a struggle.
- 25:31SPEAKER_02: Physical vision.
- 25:33SPEAKER_01: Physical vision.
- 25:34I was going to say vision in general about where you're going
- 25:37in life doesn't seem
- 25:40SPEAKER_02: to be the struggle,
- 25:41SPEAKER_02: my friend.
- 25:41SPEAKER_01: That's good.
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: Well, I can't see it physically, so I have to see it.
- 25:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:47SPEAKER_01: Well, that's really, I mean, I don't know.
- 25:51I think that's amazing context because that's pretty much the
- 25:54question behind the
- 25:55SPEAKER_02: question is like,
- 25:56SPEAKER_02: how do you have such deep capacity?
- 25:58SPEAKER_02: Well,
- 25:58I think it like stems from the fact that like you've been
- 26:00through some big
- 26:01SPEAKER_02: challenges and like also,
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: I mean,
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: we are an amalgamation of so many nuanced and complex ideas.
- 26:10experiences that we go through as we grow up and stuff but it
- 26:13sounds like obviously
- 26:14like parents are a huge piece of that capacity because they
- 26:17showed you like this is
- 26:19what it looks like to work hard um because they like helped you
- 26:23believe in yourself
- 26:23with like your journey with homeschooling and and your journey
- 26:27with just like yeah
- 26:28yeah like you set the pace for this do you want to like achieve
- 26:31a lot or do you
- 26:32SPEAKER_02: want to just like kind of go through the motions um
- 26:36and then it also sounds like with the challenges with like your
- 26:40eyesight and stuff
- 26:41SPEAKER_02: like that where it was like i'm overcoming obstacles and kind of gaining
- 26:44responsibility in a younger younger in life in general like
- 26:49when i met you in in uh
- 26:51i don't know three and a half years ago something like that um
- 26:55i was like oh like
- 26:56this kid is like around my age and and then i like learned that
- 27:00you were like quite
- 27:01SPEAKER_02: a bit younger than me i think you're like
- 27:03SPEAKER_02: five or six years younger than me.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: I'm 24 right now.
- 27:06Which is like amazing because you have such a great mustache
- 27:10and you can grow some facial hair.
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: So you,
- 27:12SPEAKER_02: you,
- 27:13SPEAKER_02: you look like my age,
- 27:15but it was just like wild to me that you had achieved what you
- 27:18had achieved at that
- 27:19SPEAKER_02: point.
- 27:20SPEAKER_02: And then you've even achieved more,
- 27:21like you've started a nonprofit since then and all this stuff
- 27:24where it's like,
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: oh man,
- 27:25SPEAKER_02: like this guy just has this deep capacity.
- 27:27SPEAKER_02: And to understand the context that you were just talking about,
- 27:30SPEAKER_02: I think it's like,
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: it gives me a more full,
- 27:32SPEAKER_02: I mean,
- 27:33not an entire picture because there's so much to who you are as
- 27:36a person but um
- 27:38gives me a lot more context for like okay cool i understand a
- 27:41bit more of how you
- 27:43make these decisions and uh kind of like the subconscious and
- 27:47conscious way that
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: you think about a lot of this stuff i think it's also um
- 27:53SPEAKER_01: I learned this from a young age.
- 27:55SPEAKER_01: I was talking to a guy about this the other day.
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: I learned this because I loved playing video games.
- 28:00I still,
- 28:01I know this might be shocking,
- 28:03but it's like I play quite a bit of video games.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: I love playing video games.
- 28:07And when you are playing something like Minecraft,
- 28:13and you don't know how to do something,
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: You have two options,
- 28:17which is either you can struggle and struggle and struggle and
- 28:21struggle to try to
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: figure it out.
- 28:23SPEAKER_01: And then you do figure it out,
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: or you struggle,
- 28:25SPEAKER_01: struggle,
- 28:25SPEAKER_01: struggle,
- 28:25SPEAKER_01: you give up and you throw the controller and you know,
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: you're done.
- 28:30SPEAKER_01: You go into YouTube and you learn it from YouTube.
- 28:33SPEAKER_01: And that's what I started doing at a young age.
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: Learning from YouTube.
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: And being able to teach myself things that I need to know.
- 28:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 28:42SPEAKER_01: I think is when I hire somebody, that's the number one skill.
- 28:46SPEAKER_01: Can you problem solve without me needing to get involved?
- 28:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:51SPEAKER_01: And...
- 28:53learning from youtube now with chat gpt as well there's no way
- 28:58matt there's no way
- 28:59that i would have a non-profit right now if it wasn't for chat
- 29:02gpt yeah because
- 29:04stupid questions that i don't know the answers to are so easy
- 29:08to get answers now
- 29:09yeah or really good questions you don't know the answer yeah no
- 29:12exactly it's true
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: right um but then uh
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: And then also I'm an Enneagram three.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: Which is the achiever.
- 29:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: And it's, I will show you my worth by my accomplishments.
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: A hundred percent that has been my bane and my wife is.
- 29:31SPEAKER_01: Your biggest strength and your biggest.
- 29:33SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: Just like.
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: I accomplished too much.
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: But no,
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: seriously,
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: it's like sometimes,
- 29:39SPEAKER_01: um,
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: sleeping at last,
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: the artist has a whole album.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: That's all the Enneagram numbers.
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: That is hilarious.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: The three, the first thing it says, you play the song, it says,
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: Maybe I've done enough.
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: And you're like, dude, I just start crying.
- 29:57SPEAKER_02: You're like, oh, this just speaks to my soul.
- 30:01SPEAKER_02: I think that's a good segue into my next question,
- 30:03SPEAKER_02: which is like you and Lauren are both entrepreneurs.
- 30:07Like,
- 30:07how do you guys protect your marriage while like being
- 30:11ambitious and building things?
- 30:13And what do you feel like you can't sacrifice in order to like
- 30:17do marriage well?
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: Hmm.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: It's a good question.
- 30:26Um,
- 30:29I'd say truthfully,
- 30:31if I'm,
- 30:32I'm just going to answer this straight real with you.
- 30:34SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 30:36SPEAKER_01: Um, Lauren and I got married really young.
- 30:39I was 19 and she was 17 when I proposed and we got married when
- 30:45we were,
- 30:45um,
- 30:47SPEAKER_01: I had just turned 20, and she was 18.
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: And we were kids, man.
- 30:53SPEAKER_01: We got married, and we entered into marriage super stoked.
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: It was going to fix all of our problems.
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: Of course.
- 31:00And specifically for me,
- 31:02one of the things that I dealt with a lot was pornography.
- 31:05SPEAKER_01: So I had a pornography addiction from a very young age,
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: and it was something that I had truthfully never experienced
- 31:17SPEAKER_01: life without since it started.
- 31:19SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: Um,
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: and so like every,
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: uh,
- 31:23Christian dude that is young and wants to get married and all
- 31:27this kind of things,
- 31:28SPEAKER_01: I think I'm going to get married and that problem is going to be gone.
- 31:30SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 31:31SPEAKER_01: The biggest lie ever, the biggest lie ever.
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: And it, um,
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: It didn't go that way.
- 31:38SPEAKER_01: And six months into marriage, I was found out.
- 31:43SPEAKER_01: And it was the most devastating thing to my wife ever.
- 31:51SPEAKER_01: she was blindsided by it um everybody says you know when you get married
- 31:57everybody's like oh the first year is so hard okay for us
- 32:01honestly the first year
- 32:03would have been awesome if not for my sin yeah and so we went
- 32:09through a really
- 32:10really really hard season yeah at a young age um in the
- 32:15beginning of our marriage
- 32:18where I was struggling with pornography and with lust and
- 32:21trying to get over that
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: and feeling shame from falling into that again and again.
- 32:27SPEAKER_01: And it sent my wife into a spiral of depression.
- 32:32SPEAKER_02: Understandably.
- 32:33Dealing with suicidal thoughts and these different things that
- 32:37just had never happened before.
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: But my sin had brought us to that low.
- 32:44SPEAKER_01: Now that's intense, but I say that because...
- 32:47SPEAKER_01: That was a really, really hard thing.
- 32:53SPEAKER_02: One of the joys of recording outside.
- 32:56SPEAKER_01: Outside.
- 32:57SPEAKER_01: Military helicopters flying over.
- 32:59SPEAKER_01: That's a sick helicopter.
- 33:00SPEAKER_01: There's a military base over here that's also a golf course.
- 33:07SPEAKER_01: What?
- 33:08There are multiple presidents that have come over and moved
- 33:11golf right over here.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: Random.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's pretty crazy.
- 33:13SPEAKER_01: all right sorry for that interruption you were you were telling us a very
- 33:17vulnerable story no so i mean it's something that's like that
- 33:21was a really really
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: tough time for us and um one that uh you know caused us to um
- 33:32SPEAKER_01: to change our church community and,
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: um,
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: to change,
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: um,
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 33:37we started being discipled and we started being real and talk
- 33:41about like pivot or
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: die.
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: It's a, it's a pivot or die moment for sure.
- 33:45SPEAKER_01: And that was something that,
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: um,
- 33:47SPEAKER_01: really in the midst of that,
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: Matt,
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: it felt like there was no hope,
- 33:53SPEAKER_01: no way out.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: Nothing's going to change.
- 33:55SPEAKER_01: This is an unbeatable wall.
- 33:57SPEAKER_01: That's how it felt.
- 33:59SPEAKER_01: Um, and
- 34:02SPEAKER_01: Now, I mean, honestly, I'm in SA still, which is Sexaholics Anonymous.
- 34:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: And we have a meeting every Saturday and it's incredible, bro.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: It's changed my life.
- 34:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 34:14But that hardship in the beginning of our marriage and making
- 34:19the choice to stick together,
- 34:22um,
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: has solidified the foundation for a lot of the rest of our marriage.
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: It's like,
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: if we could make it through that,
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: if God could get us through that,
- 34:35SPEAKER_01: he can get us through just about anything.
- 34:37SPEAKER_01: Enter finding out that your son,
- 34:40your first kid is going to have severe disabilities for the
- 34:45rest of his life.
- 34:47SPEAKER_01: Not the story you expected,
- 34:50but God had already shown us that he was able to get us through
- 34:54things that we
- 34:54SPEAKER_01: could never have imagined.
- 34:56SPEAKER_01: And so he took us,
- 34:58SPEAKER_01: it's again,
- 34:58SPEAKER_01: I just think about God as an author or an orchestrator and it's like,
- 35:03it's just a beautiful orchestration that he has going and
- 35:08something I never would
- 35:09SPEAKER_01: have planned.
- 35:11SPEAKER_01: But then six months after Dougie's born,
- 35:14SPEAKER_01: My wife comes to me and goes, hey, have you ever heard of this thing?
- 35:16SPEAKER_01: It's blown up on TikTok.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: It's called bungee fitness.
- 35:19SPEAKER_01: I'm like, what are you talking about?
- 35:21All these people will get into these bungee harnesses and
- 35:24they'll do squats and
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: push-ups and all these things,
- 35:26SPEAKER_01: but it's low impact on your joints.
- 35:30SPEAKER_01: All these kind of things.
- 35:30SPEAKER_01: She goes, there's nowhere in Orange County to do it.
- 35:33SPEAKER_01: Not a single place.
- 35:35SPEAKER_01: I want to open up the first bungee fitness studio.
- 35:37SPEAKER_02: I'm like, what are you talking about?
- 35:41SPEAKER_02: What amount of
- 35:43SPEAKER_02: kind of creativity and ingenuity to like find that niche too.
- 35:47SPEAKER_01: Seriously.
- 35:48She has,
- 35:48yeah,
- 35:49clearly you guys are cut from the same cloth when it comes to
- 35:51that kind of stuff.
- 35:52SPEAKER_01: And there's so many times,
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: Matt,
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: throughout our marriage,
- 35:55it's one of my favorite parts about my life and about our
- 35:58marriage dynamic is that
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: I will come up with crazy ideas every day,
- 36:01SPEAKER_01: dude,
- 36:02SPEAKER_01: every day,
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: just this crazy wild idea and some other business thing.
- 36:07SPEAKER_01: And I'll pitch it to her.
- 36:08SPEAKER_01: I'll go, what about this?
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: And dah, dah, dah, dah.
- 36:11SPEAKER_01: Um,
- 36:11SPEAKER_01: she said she had to learn early on with me to,
- 36:14SPEAKER_01: um,
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: when I came home and went,
- 36:16SPEAKER_01: Hey,
- 36:16SPEAKER_01: let's build a rocket ship and fly to the moon.
- 36:19SPEAKER_01: She had to go, okay.
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: And then if that idea stuck around for another two days,
- 36:24that's when she can really start to try to poke holes in it and
- 36:26that kind of stuff.
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: But she's been so gracious with me and all this kind of stuff.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: So when she came to me with this crazy idea, I was like, yeah, go for it.
- 36:33SPEAKER_01: Let's make it happen.
- 36:34SPEAKER_01: Let's make it happen.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: And so now bunge fitness, um, they are, um,
- 36:40SPEAKER_01: Check them out on Instagram.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: Dude, they're just unbelievable.
- 36:43Well,
- 36:44you were telling me like the Real Housewives of OC are like
- 36:47filming there.
- 36:50SPEAKER_02: Like big stuff is happening,
- 36:51which is just like so cool that you guys have that creativity
- 36:56and that muscle to
- 36:57SPEAKER_02: like make it happen.
- 36:58SPEAKER_01: I'm just so proud of her, honestly.
- 37:01But then opening weekend of Bunch,
- 37:03we find out that we're expecting again.
- 37:06totally that one was unplanned that one was totally like what
- 37:09in the world another
- 37:10grenade into life like god what what timing is this you know
- 37:15and um but what that
- 37:16turned out to be is a huge blessing totally because it meant
- 37:21that my um pregnant
- 37:24SPEAKER_01: wife who was now um
- 37:27SPEAKER_01: a business owner couldn't strap into the bungee harness and instruct.
- 37:32SPEAKER_01: So she had to hire more people out and delegate more things.
- 37:35And she started managing all the social media and all of the
- 37:40website stuff.
- 37:41SPEAKER_01: And it's blown up now because of that.
- 37:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:44SPEAKER_02: She was in,
- 37:46SPEAKER_02: she would have been in the wrong seat on the bus,
- 37:49SPEAKER_02: um,
- 37:49SPEAKER_02: because she just needed to be in the weeds of running the business,
- 37:53SPEAKER_02: but instead necessity,
- 37:55SPEAKER_02: uh,
- 37:57provided the opportunity for her to like be in the right seat
- 38:01yeah um yeah dang and
- 38:03so when it comes to our marriage dynamic or when it comes to
- 38:06how do we preserve our
- 38:07time or what are these things for me um right now is the first
- 38:11time that this year
- 38:13SPEAKER_01: is the first time that i'm tasting um like time freedom
- 38:21SPEAKER_01: Before this,
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: I mean,
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: when we first got married,
- 38:23SPEAKER_01: bro,
- 38:23SPEAKER_01: I would work 20 hour days and like wild hours.
- 38:31Well,
- 38:32and that's like what I always think about from an
- 38:35entrepreneurial standpoint.
- 38:37SPEAKER_02: When you're building something,
- 38:39the the the baby that you need to like birth and and like see
- 38:45grow like you're not
- 38:47sleeping when you have a newborn yeah like you're you're
- 38:50figuring it out and that's
- 38:52i mean it feels like such a good analogy with with any sort of
- 38:56business that you're
- 38:56starting and i mean like your main entrepreneurial venture is
- 39:00like the school that
- 39:00SPEAKER_02: you started but then you also have like
- 39:04uh all of the stuff that you're doing with your non-profit now
- 39:07too where it's like
- 39:09yeah it makes sense and you sort of have to sacrifice anything
- 39:13and everything to
- 39:13like see that dream come to fruition and i just like walked
- 39:17through the school that
- 39:19you built um and that wasn't like alone obviously but i don't
- 39:24know it's what a cool
- 39:26testament to like see yeah the 20-hour days they like they paid
- 39:31off but the
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: sacrifice was
- 39:33SPEAKER_02: It seemed like it was big.
- 39:35SPEAKER_01: It was a lot for sure.
- 39:36SPEAKER_01: I mean,
- 39:36a lot of hours put in a lot of time in the beginning of my
- 39:40marriage that honestly,
- 39:41SPEAKER_01: if I was to coach somebody through this again,
- 39:43SPEAKER_01: I'd probably be like,
- 39:43SPEAKER_01: Hey bro,
- 39:44SPEAKER_01: it's probably healthier for your marriage to go get a nine to five.
- 39:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:48SPEAKER_02: That's always how it works.
- 39:49SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 39:49SPEAKER_01: But, um, because of that time put in now, um,
- 39:55SPEAKER_01: Getting the right people on the bus and delegating more to them.
- 40:00Stacey Ballou has been somebody that I brought on as the team
- 40:04manager at Kaser
- 40:05SPEAKER_01: Arts,
- 40:05SPEAKER_01: which is my art school,
- 40:09SPEAKER_01: this year.
- 40:09SPEAKER_01: And it's changed everything, bro.
- 40:12SPEAKER_01: I'm like...
- 40:13SPEAKER_01: It feels like I can take a deep breath.
- 40:15SPEAKER_01: I can plan.
- 40:17SPEAKER_01: I can ideate for what the future looks like.
- 40:21SPEAKER_01: Work on your vision.
- 40:22SPEAKER_01: It has been unbelievable.
- 40:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:25SPEAKER_01: And allowed me to dedicate more time to Global Creation Foundation,
- 40:28SPEAKER_01: the nonprofit side of things.
- 40:30SPEAKER_01: But it's also allowed me to give more time to my family.
- 40:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 40:36SPEAKER_01: And that is my one thing right now with...
- 40:39Global Creation Foundation,
- 40:41it is awesome and opportunities are like,
- 40:44they're abounding.
- 40:46But I will not sacrifice time with my family and with my kids
- 40:53when they're young
- 40:53SPEAKER_01: right now to build that.
- 40:58SPEAKER_01: Because right now, Kaser Arts is able to pay the bills.
- 41:02If that wasn't the case,
- 41:05the number one thing becomes providing for your family.
- 41:08SPEAKER_01: And so,
- 41:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah,
- 41:11SPEAKER_01: I think that we talked about this a little bit earlier,
- 41:14but it's that whole balance between success and the dreams that
- 41:19we have and chasing
- 41:20SPEAKER_01: those wholeheartedly and being relationally healthy.
- 41:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 41:25SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 41:26SPEAKER_01: And emotionally healthy and sleep healthy,
- 41:29SPEAKER_01: which I'm not...
- 41:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah,
- 41:31SPEAKER_01: well,
- 41:31SPEAKER_02: you can take what you can get when you have little ones.
- 41:35SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 41:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:36SPEAKER_01: But those things...
- 41:40SPEAKER_01: I would rather have those things and less success.
- 41:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 41:44SPEAKER_02: Well, and, and how you define success, I think is important.
- 41:47SPEAKER_02: And that's something that I wrestle with where it's like,
- 41:50SPEAKER_02: well,
- 41:50if I'm defining success as like having a good relationship with
- 41:53my wife and having
- 41:54SPEAKER_02: time with my kids,
- 41:55SPEAKER_02: then like that is success.
- 41:58Uh,
- 41:58and then we always have like the external pressure of the world
- 42:03and,
- 42:04uh,
- 42:05SPEAKER_02: I mean,
- 42:06SPEAKER_02: if you're anything like me,
- 42:07then like you have the external pressure of wanting to get
- 42:10people's approval and be
- 42:11SPEAKER_02: a people pleaser,
- 42:13SPEAKER_02: which I don't think you really have that
- 42:16as far as i know where like you don't really care what people
- 42:19think you're just
- 42:19like i'm gonna do this thing whether you like it or not
- 42:23unfortunately uh yeah
- 42:25confrontation is not i'm not afraid yeah yeah which is a
- 42:29superpower i think in in
- 42:31many ways but like most superpowers it's also a big weakness
- 42:35too where like yeah i
- 42:37SPEAKER_02: just crave people's approval
- 42:39um but then that also like gives me some well no there's
- 42:43probably nothing good
- 42:44about that i don't know if there is anything good about that um
- 42:48anyway this
- 42:49interview is not about me um something you said that was really
- 42:53it was funny it was
- 42:55like a perfect segue into my next i feel like you're just
- 42:58setting me up perfectly
- 42:59SPEAKER_02: even though i didn't give you any questions um
- 43:03like what you were talking about with you and lauren where like
- 43:06you you guys you
- 43:08have like a million ideas um like as someone who has a lot of
- 43:14ideas how do you kind
- 43:16of decide what filters do you have for deciding like is this a
- 43:20distraction is it a
- 43:21hobby is it like a calling um yeah i'm i'm so curious about
- 43:26like how you get from
- 43:29here's this idea that I have and you gave me a little snippet
- 43:32of an answer where
- 43:32it's like if it's more than a couple days and like you're still
- 43:36thinking about it
- 43:37or it's a week past or whatever but I'm curious to kind of get
- 43:39your thoughts on how
- 43:41do you like move from thinking about it to like doing something
- 43:45about it um
- 43:50SPEAKER_01: So I have a note on my phone that's just called business ideas.
- 43:55SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 43:56SPEAKER_01: I have the same one.
- 43:57SPEAKER_01: There's probably 50 businesses on there.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: Sounds about right.
- 44:01With the business idea and all that kind of stuff,
- 44:05probably three or four of them
- 44:12SPEAKER_01: are outlined.
- 44:13Like I could,
- 44:15if everything collapsed right now,
- 44:17I could go start those right now.
- 44:20SPEAKER_01: And there it's a, it's a dream.
- 44:25I really want to do those businesses that I've really thought
- 44:29out and I'm stoked about.
- 44:31SPEAKER_01: But the more that I I'm learning now,
- 44:34SPEAKER_01: I think that,
- 44:35SPEAKER_01: I mean,
- 44:36SPEAKER_01: one of the things I just,
- 44:37SPEAKER_01: this moment comes to my mind when we talk about this.
- 44:41SPEAKER_01: When I first wanted to start Global Creation Foundation,
- 44:44the idea was to bring music education to kids all around the
- 44:47world who need it.
- 44:49And so what I was going to do is I was going to fundraise to
- 44:55make a video series on
- 44:57SPEAKER_01: how to play the ukulele.
- 44:59And then I was gonna go to ukulele brands and I was gonna get
- 45:03them to donate the ukuleles.
- 45:05And then I was gonna go to donors and get them to sponsor my
- 45:07ticket to go over and
- 45:09SPEAKER_01: to bring these ukuleles and then show the videos to the kids out there.
- 45:12SPEAKER_01: That was the very loose structure of it.
- 45:17In the business idea note that I have,
- 45:22that is the outline of what GCF is.
- 45:26Russ Klein sat me down in a lunch meeting when I was telling
- 45:31him all about this.
- 45:32SPEAKER_01: And he goes, that's great, Seth.
- 45:34SPEAKER_01: What is one thing you could do this week to not kind of make that happen,
- 45:40SPEAKER_01: but how could you just make it happen?
- 45:42SPEAKER_01: What's a simpler equation than that?
- 45:44SPEAKER_01: Because that's a lot of stats.
- 45:45SPEAKER_01: Nice, Russ.
- 45:47SPEAKER_01: Classic.
- 45:48SPEAKER_01: Heavy hitting question.
- 45:49SPEAKER_01: He asked me that question and I said,
- 45:52SPEAKER_01: Well,
- 45:52I guess I could like set up my iPhone in my classroom and I
- 45:55could order some
- 45:56SPEAKER_01: ukuleles from Amazon.
- 45:58SPEAKER_01: And he was like, yeah.
- 46:00And the next week I sat down in my classroom and for four hours
- 46:05I pressed record
- 46:06SPEAKER_01: and I filmed a how to play ukulele series.
- 46:08SPEAKER_01: I chopped that up and posted it on YouTube.
- 46:11And I went on Amazon and bought $20 ukuleles and they got
- 46:17shipped to my door.
- 46:18And then I found somebody that was going to Uganda,
- 46:20which is where I wanted to work.
- 46:22SPEAKER_01: And I said,
- 46:23SPEAKER_01: hey,
- 46:23can you bring these to the school that you work with and then
- 46:25connect me to the
- 46:26SPEAKER_01: person that's there?
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: And that happened.
- 46:31SPEAKER_01: And it's just like that concept of going,
- 46:36SPEAKER_01: well,
- 46:37SPEAKER_01: no,
- 46:37SPEAKER_01: what's the simplest way for you to actually take action?
- 46:41SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 46:42SPEAKER_02: The minimum viable product idea.
- 46:45SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 46:46SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's like on my, what's it called?
- 46:51SPEAKER_01: strength finders test.
- 46:52SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 46:53SPEAKER_01: Have you ever taken strength?
- 46:54SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 46:54SPEAKER_01: It's great.
- 46:55SPEAKER_01: My number one is activator classic.
- 46:57SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 46:58SPEAKER_01: I love being like, Matt, you have an idea.
- 47:01SPEAKER_01: You want to do a podcast, bro?
- 47:03SPEAKER_01: Let's do it.
- 47:04SPEAKER_01: Like go today and go do it.
- 47:06SPEAKER_01: And why not just try it.
- 47:09SPEAKER_01: Um,
- 47:11SPEAKER_01: There was a moment that my wife and I both had,
- 47:12SPEAKER_01: and this circles back into this whole conversation.
- 47:15There was a moment that my wife and I had when we were taking
- 47:20Dougie to the hospital.
- 47:24SPEAKER_01: Dougie's our son and he has seizures sometimes.
- 47:30So one of these times that he had had a couple seizure episodes
- 47:32and we needed to
- 47:33SPEAKER_01: take him into the hospital,
- 47:35SPEAKER_01: we got in the car and we're driving to Chalk Hospital,
- 47:37SPEAKER_01: the local hospital here.
- 47:41was when my wife was talking about bunch and it was when i was
- 47:44talking about gcf a
- 47:46lot of these things that we're doing so we're talking about the
- 47:48different things
- 47:48that are happening yeah right now in life and um we had this
- 47:56thought together that
- 47:57was like yeah let's solidify this this is a pivotal moment in
- 48:02my life when i think
- 48:03SPEAKER_01: about this
- 48:04we're talking about all these business ideas and we kind of
- 48:06look at each other and
- 48:06SPEAKER_01: we're like,
- 48:07SPEAKER_01: is this crazy?
- 48:08Like,
- 48:09should we not be talking about this as we're taking our son in
- 48:11right now?
- 48:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, into the hospital.
- 48:13SPEAKER_01: And like,
- 48:14should we just like forget all of this and just go get normal
- 48:18jobs and care for our
- 48:20SPEAKER_01: kids and do this whole thing?
- 48:23And I'm just like,
- 48:24man,
- 48:24we would hate our lives so much more if we did that,
- 48:28honestly.
- 48:29SPEAKER_01: Just us, personally.
- 48:30SPEAKER_01: And so instead,
- 48:31SPEAKER_01: we made this pact that was basically saying,
- 48:37SPEAKER_01: at the end of our lives,
- 48:39we would rather look back and see a field of dumpster fire
- 48:46failures and awesome
- 48:49SPEAKER_01: successes
- 48:51than ideas that we had that we never acted on i would rather
- 48:56try it and have it
- 48:57completely fail yeah than to not try it at all which i can
- 49:01almost guarantee that
- 49:02like there have been many things that you have tried and failed
- 49:05at like i think
- 49:07that's just the life of an entrepreneur like you're just
- 49:11quickly learning the
- 49:12process of failure over and over and over again over and over
- 49:15and over again um
- 49:16but like there's something in you and in her that's like yeah i
- 49:20gotta keep i gotta
- 49:21keep doing this yeah it's a way of life seriously dang that's
- 49:26so good and so i and
- 49:28does that oh yeah yeah well i'm curious this is uh like rapid
- 49:33fire like what's one
- 49:34idea that you killed very quickly that you were like this has
- 49:39i'm super excited
- 49:40SPEAKER_02: about this and then you were like oh no no way
- 49:46SPEAKER_01: Let me, let me pull up my business.
- 49:51I want to be careful about asking this question because there
- 49:55might be stuff in
- 49:56SPEAKER_02: there that you're,
- 49:56SPEAKER_02: uh,
- 49:57SPEAKER_02: that you're still actively thinking.
- 49:58If you hear me talk about something that I want to do and you
- 50:02go do it before me.
- 50:03SPEAKER_02: Awesome.
- 50:04SPEAKER_01: Go do it, please.
- 50:06SPEAKER_01: I just want to see them happen.
- 50:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 50:08SPEAKER_01: Because they'd just be so fun.
- 50:10Have we talked about that before where we just need to start a
- 50:13website that someone
- 50:15SPEAKER_02: else starts all the ideas that we have?
- 50:20SPEAKER_02: Or maybe that was, I think that was my old boss, John.
- 50:23SPEAKER_02: He was like, I have so many ideas.
- 50:25I just want a website where I put all my ideas in it and then
- 50:28people can just go start it.
- 50:29SPEAKER_02: I don't get any money.
- 50:30SPEAKER_02: I don't, I just see them start my ideas.
- 50:32But they have to like claim it and be like,
- 50:34this one is mine and I'm going to go do it.
- 50:36SPEAKER_01: I have to commit to it.
- 50:39So my first business ever was when I think about when I was
- 50:45like,
- 50:45this is a business.
- 50:47SPEAKER_01: I was in junior high and it was called Geckos for God.
- 50:51SPEAKER_01: And I bred and sold crested geckos out of my garage.
- 50:54SPEAKER_01: Incredible.
- 50:55SPEAKER_01: And what was the for God piece of that?
- 50:58For God piece was all the proceeds that I would make from them
- 51:00went to pay for the
- 51:01SPEAKER_01: mission trips.
- 51:02SPEAKER_01: Oh, epic.
- 51:03SPEAKER_01: It's great.
- 51:03So I was trying to make like a joke and then you turned it
- 51:06around to be like a
- 51:07SPEAKER_02: really sincere,
- 51:08SPEAKER_02: beautiful thing.
- 51:09SPEAKER_01: I mean, Geckos for God was just awesome.
- 51:12SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 51:13SPEAKER_01: I told my grandpa probably two years ago,
- 51:16SPEAKER_01: I was like,
- 51:17SPEAKER_01: Gramps,
- 51:17SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 51:17SPEAKER_01: if I did it again,
- 51:18SPEAKER_01: I could kill it.
- 51:20SPEAKER_01: I could just crush geckos for God.
- 51:23And we started talking and ideating about actually starting it
- 51:26again to the point
- 51:27where he's like bought a gecko cage and like has a reptile cage
- 51:32that's like sitting
- 51:32SPEAKER_01: in his garage right now.
- 51:34SPEAKER_01: Just in case I want to start breeding and selling crusty geckos again.
- 51:37SPEAKER_01: And at that time, that was an idea that I was like, pfft.
- 51:40SPEAKER_01: We can't put that one right now.
- 51:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 51:45SPEAKER_02: What's one idea that you're afraid to start?
- 51:55SPEAKER_01: This time program thing, it feels really big.
- 52:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 52:01SPEAKER_01: And I want to make it a certification someday to where...
- 52:07SPEAKER_01: you know, it just feels a little bit bigger than me.
- 52:10SPEAKER_01: And it's just scary to do.
- 52:13SPEAKER_01: Um, I think that, uh,
- 52:17SPEAKER_01: I have a sparkling water brand that I'm going to start someday.
- 52:20SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 52:21This one I'm not going to say anything about because I'm going
- 52:23to do this one.
- 52:23SPEAKER_01: Dude.
- 52:24SPEAKER_01: But it's, it's, uh, I'm really excited about it.
- 52:29SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 52:30SPEAKER_01: But that is a really tough market.
- 52:32SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 52:32SPEAKER_01: To go into.
- 52:33SPEAKER_01: That is quite saturated.
- 52:34SPEAKER_01: And, um, it's just a lot of, uh, um,
- 52:41SPEAKER_01: It's a lot of capital in the beginning to order.
- 52:43SPEAKER_02: Well,
- 52:43SPEAKER_02: I will be,
- 52:45SPEAKER_02: whatever your model is,
- 52:46SPEAKER_02: I'll be like a subscriber monthly to have it in my place of work.
- 52:52SPEAKER_01: I'll tell you about this when the cameras are off.
- 52:54SPEAKER_02: Dude, I'm stoked.
- 52:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's going to be absolutely insane.
- 52:59SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 52:59SPEAKER_01: I'm really excited.
- 53:00SPEAKER_01: I'm very excited to hear about that.
- 53:02SPEAKER_01: But that's one that I'm scared, but so excited about.
- 53:05SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 53:06um this is sort of in the same vein but i'm curious because of
- 53:09like all the
- 53:09business ideas that you have and kind of the context behind
- 53:13like how you shape some
- 53:16of those ideas like what's one business book that you found
- 53:20super super valuable
- 53:22kind of time and time again that maybe i don't know you go back
- 53:25to um or that you
- 53:26just like read once and it was amazing and you're like this
- 53:29formed the way that i
- 53:30SPEAKER_02: think about thinking about ideas
- 53:37um so i'm teaching a an entrepreneurship class right now oh yes
- 53:42the class that i
- 53:43need to enroll i have a list that's just called mr seth's
- 53:47approved list of content
- 53:49and um the four books on there that are um uh really really
- 53:55great that i would say
- 53:56if you want to start a business everybody should read these um
- 53:59just in quick
- 54:00succession rich dad poor dad teaches you how to think about
- 54:03money yeah um the
- 54:05SPEAKER_01: e-myth
- 54:07SPEAKER_01: teaches you how to organize and build systems into your business.
- 54:13SPEAKER_01: The cash flow quadrant is the sequel to Rich Dad Poor Dad.
- 54:21SPEAKER_01: And that is how to actually, the four ways you could make money.
- 54:25SPEAKER_01: Great book.
- 54:26SPEAKER_01: And then the last one is The Richest Man in Babylon.
- 54:30SPEAKER_01: I just love that book.
- 54:31SPEAKER_01: That's a more personal finance side of things.
- 54:34SPEAKER_01: The other one I would just say,
- 54:35like when it comes to conflict and running businesses and
- 54:39running teams and
- 54:40SPEAKER_01: managing different people and all those kind of things,
- 54:42SPEAKER_01: there's a book called Radical Candor that is littered with profanity.
- 54:48And it's not written from a Christian perspective,
- 54:50but it is so unbelievably helpful.
- 54:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 54:54SPEAKER_01: It has made me a better dad,
- 54:57SPEAKER_01: a better husband,
- 54:58SPEAKER_01: a better business owner,
- 54:59SPEAKER_01: a better boss,
- 55:00SPEAKER_01: um,
- 55:00SPEAKER_01: better friend.
- 55:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 55:02SPEAKER_01: Because I read that book.
- 55:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 55:04SPEAKER_02: Better at cussing people out.
- 55:06SPEAKER_02: Way better.
- 55:08SPEAKER_02: It's funny.
- 55:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 55:09SPEAKER_02: I didn't realize it's been a long time since I've read that.
- 55:12SPEAKER_02: Um,
- 55:14SPEAKER_02: And my dad,
- 55:16it's cool to see the parallels between two really smart people
- 55:21that you know,
- 55:22SPEAKER_02: and when they agree on something together,
- 55:24SPEAKER_02: then you know it's like,
- 55:25SPEAKER_02: oh,
- 55:25SPEAKER_02: you've got to do this.
- 55:26SPEAKER_02: And my dad is the same way about that book,
- 55:28SPEAKER_02: where he's like,
- 55:29SPEAKER_02: Radical Candor is one of my favorite leadership books I've ever read.
- 55:33And so,
- 55:34I mean,
- 55:34obviously I take most of what he says as like gospel in
- 55:38general.
- 55:39SPEAKER_02: And so it's cool to see like from your perspective too,
- 55:43SPEAKER_02: that that is a super helpful use of time.
- 55:48SPEAKER_02: Switching gears a little bit.
- 55:51SPEAKER_02: But on your Kaiser Arts website, you have like your mission statement.
- 55:57And it almost seems like it's a personal mission statement,
- 56:00like it's for the school.
- 56:01SPEAKER_02: But I think it's also like knowing you, it's like you too.
- 56:06And I'm curious,
- 56:07like the statement,
- 56:08I'm going to read it and maybe I'm messing it up.
- 56:10SPEAKER_02: but inspire people to live creative lives full of purpose,
- 56:15SPEAKER_02: passion,
- 56:16SPEAKER_02: and risk for the glory of God until there are little fires everywhere.
- 56:21SPEAKER_02: And it seems like you kind of adhere to that very well,
- 56:27SPEAKER_02: obviously,
- 56:27SPEAKER_02: with what you're doing with Kaiser Arts and GCF.
- 56:31Are there any practices that you work through to ensure like
- 56:36your ego,
- 56:37I don't know,
- 56:40and and like your ambition is like aligned in the right way so
- 56:44that like that
- 56:45mission moves forward because like being yeah yeah i mean so
- 56:53that that statement is
- 56:56my life statement yeah um and that's that's on my linkedin
- 57:00right um on on the case
- 57:03SPEAKER_01: or arts website um
- 57:06SPEAKER_01: It's similar.
- 57:07SPEAKER_01: The KSR Arts website,
- 57:08SPEAKER_01: our tagline is For the Love of Creating,
- 57:11SPEAKER_01: which could be that just shrunken down,
- 57:15SPEAKER_01: right?
- 57:17SPEAKER_01: And on the GCF site, it's Music Changes Lives.
- 57:23These taglines,
- 57:23you guys,
- 57:24it's just like,
- 57:24oh my gosh,
- 57:25they're just part of me.
- 57:26SPEAKER_01: That's how it feels.
- 57:28SPEAKER_01: And really taking that statement,
- 57:33SPEAKER_01: and breaking it up into a little bit more specific expressions.
- 57:39When it talks about that last part,
- 57:41until there are little fires everywhere,
- 57:46same concept.
- 57:47SPEAKER_01: When I look back at the end of my life, I want to see a road of pivots.
- 57:55I want to see a road littered with failures and successes,
- 58:00and I want to see
- 58:03SPEAKER_01: little fires that I've started,
- 58:06SPEAKER_01: not an arson,
- 58:07SPEAKER_01: but I'm an arson for passion for God and for creativity.
- 58:12SPEAKER_00: We're going to clip this for sure.
- 58:14SPEAKER_01: Yes, 100%.
- 58:16SPEAKER_01: I am an arson for Jesus.
- 58:19SPEAKER_01: But basically, I think that passion spreads.
- 58:27SPEAKER_01: And if passion is like fire,
- 58:31if I'm really stoked about something and I'm passionately
- 58:35talking about that thing,
- 58:38my desire for that thing and to learn more about it and to
- 58:42pursue it spreads to
- 58:44SPEAKER_01: you.
- 58:46SPEAKER_01: And just that is something for me that is so fulfilling.
- 58:51SPEAKER_01: And that's just, it's just teaching too.
- 58:53SPEAKER_01: And I just love teaching other people to love the things that I love.
- 58:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 58:59SPEAKER_01: And that's, that's kind of the, um,
- 59:06SPEAKER_01: the extent of it.
- 59:06SPEAKER_01: But I think to answer your question,
- 59:08how do I make sure that that goal and my pride are not
- 59:13competing or in alignment,
- 59:14SPEAKER_01: all these things?
- 59:15I think that it's one of those things where leadership is
- 59:20something that most
- 59:23SPEAKER_01: people who like want it and they need a place of leadership.
- 59:31SPEAKER_02: It's a slippery slope.
- 59:32SPEAKER_01: It's a slippery slope.
- 59:33SPEAKER_01: And I want to be careful about
- 59:35SPEAKER_01: Um, to not be that way.
- 59:38SPEAKER_01: And I think that it's something that my wife has taught me.
- 59:40SPEAKER_01: It's something that my friends are teaching me.
- 59:43And this is why I want to surround myself with people that call
- 59:45me out when I'm
- 59:46SPEAKER_01: being prideful and,
- 59:49SPEAKER_01: um,
- 59:49SPEAKER_01: call me stupid when I'm being stupid and aren't afraid of conflict,
- 59:53SPEAKER_01: honestly.
- 59:54SPEAKER_01: Um,
- 59:55and so really I have some friends that have surrounded me that
- 59:59literally I I'm just
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_01: quoting from conversations like Seth,
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_01: um,
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_01: I feel like in our friendship, you don't talk to me.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_01: You talk through me.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_01: Seth, leadership, this was wild.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_01: This hit deep.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_01: Your leadership means nothing if you don't show vulnerability.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, wow.
- 1:00:20And these quotes from trusted friends of mine that I cherish
- 1:00:26and want to make sure
- 1:00:27that I continue to live by when they call me out for leading in
- 1:00:31a way that is
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_01: not...
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_01: spreading the wrong kind of fire, you know?
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_02: Well,
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_02: I mean,
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_02: to those two quotes and to,
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_02: it sounds like,
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_02: the relationships that you have with your close,
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_02: trusted community,
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_02: like,
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_02: at least from my perspective,
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_02: you're living into those very well,
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_02: where it's like,
- 1:00:53what i do feel when i'm around you and it like i want to get as
- 1:00:57much time with seth
- 1:00:58because because of that infectious passion that you have for
- 1:01:02hey let me like take
- 1:01:03you on this journey of the thing that i'm like learning about
- 1:01:05and it gets me more
- 1:01:06excited and inspired about like i don't know even the fact that
- 1:01:09you were like dude
- 1:01:10i'm making a podcast too and i am like so excited like can you
- 1:01:14please be on it and
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_02: it's like oh
- 1:01:16this is just going to fuel the fire like my own little fire so
- 1:01:20to speak and the
- 1:01:21energy that comes off of and the momentum that i have going
- 1:01:24into like doing more of
- 1:01:26this with people is now refueled and running alongside you like
- 1:01:31as a creative
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_02: that's really inspired by like
- 1:01:35uh whatever project we're working on or whatever separately or
- 1:01:38together yeah um
- 1:01:40like i i see such an amazing and that's the reason that i'm
- 1:01:43asking is because like
- 1:01:45i feel like you have more of that figured out uh than i do so
- 1:01:49far and it's like oh
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_02: i gotta
- 1:01:52to your point be around people like you more so that i like
- 1:01:56that you guys like uh
- 1:01:58give me whatever infectious disease you guys have around as
- 1:02:03terrible as that sounds
- 1:02:04i i will say this though it's it's honestly bro i as much as i
- 1:02:09love it as much as i
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_01: love spreading the passion that i have for different things
- 1:02:17One of my greatest regrets in life is that I have a friend of
- 1:02:22mine that I convinced
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_01: to go into marriage before he was ready to go into marriage.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_01: And he ended up not being able to handle the pressure.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_01: And he left his wife and left the road of destruction
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_01: behind him and still love him.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_01: I love that man.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_01: But, um, I very much so was like, yeah, dude, you should get married.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_01: It's awesome.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_01: It's all these different things.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_01: Um,
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_01: I have friends of mine that I've pushed to start businesses that have,
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_01: um,
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_01: failed and they're now in more debt.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_01: Um, and I have,
- 1:03:18I think my tolerance for risk is very high,
- 1:03:21and my willingness to compromise is also very high.
- 1:03:25Not my integrity,
- 1:03:26but to compromise for other people so that we can make it
- 1:03:29happen.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_02: Practical compromise to get some sort of goal across the finish line.
- 1:03:38There are times where in my passion,
- 1:03:42I encourage people to do more than what their capacity is.
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_01: And I fear sometimes,
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_01: honestly,
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_01: I'm just being real,
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_01: that even as we're talking about like,
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_01: oh,
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_01: Seth,
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_01: well,
- 1:03:55you're doing this nonprofit thing and you're doing this thing
- 1:03:57and you're doing that
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_01: thing.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_01: It's juggling.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_01: And both Lauren and I are just high capacity individuals.
- 1:04:04And I don't ever want to make somebody else feel like they're
- 1:04:09not doing enough.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_01: Because God gives us all different capacities.
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_01: And the fact that I take on as much as I do,
- 1:04:20is not something that I necessarily am wanting to encourage
- 1:04:24anybody ever to do.
- 1:04:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're not preaching that to everybody.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_01: But it's something that I love that God has called me specifically into.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_01: But I think that that infectious passion is,
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_01: that's one of our core values at Kayser Arts is infectious passion.
- 1:04:47SPEAKER_01: But
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_01: It's amazing, but it's also something that I have wielded wrong before.
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_01: And it's a fear of mine that I wield it wrong again.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_02: Well,
- 1:04:59and it sounds like there's enough self-awareness there to give
- 1:05:04the context that you
- 1:05:05just gave me in whatever conversation or whatever interaction
- 1:05:08you're having to help
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_02: people understand
- 1:05:14That may be tempted because a lot of people probably look at
- 1:05:17your life and they're
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_02: like,
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_02: oh man,
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_02: like,
- 1:05:19SPEAKER_02: yeah,
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_02: that's amazing that he's able to do that much,
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_02: but I don't want to do that much.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_02: I'm going to stick with my W-2 job and I'm going to be like,
- 1:05:28I'll have my 401k and I'll not have to deal with like all the
- 1:05:31stuff that he's going
- 1:05:31SPEAKER_02: through.
- 1:05:32But there's plenty of people probably that you interact with
- 1:05:34that are like
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_02: susceptible to thinking like,
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_02: wow,
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_02: he's got it figured out.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_02: He's got it made.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_02: And I think something that I've seen you do really well is like,
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_02: yeah,
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_02: this is super challenging.
- 1:05:45And you're vulnerable enough with people to let them in on that
- 1:05:50where it is like.
- 1:05:52yeah yeah you know what you're signing up for like this is a
- 1:05:55lot um but i'm like so
- 1:05:57stoked that i get to do this and that my problems are my
- 1:06:00problems um and i have
- 1:06:02them just like everybody else or whatever but um it feels like
- 1:06:06you ride that line
- 1:06:07well which in in many ways i feel like is a knife's edge where
- 1:06:11you can kind of get
- 1:06:12lost in your own sauce some of the time when it comes to just
- 1:06:15like man i am pretty
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_02: great i have done a lot of stuff
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_02: But then you have humbling times, like it sounds like.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_01: Then I have my wife there.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_02: Well,
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_02: that's one of the beautiful things about both the girls we ended up with,
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_02: I think,
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_02: is they're very good at humbling us.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_01: In a loving and incredible way.
- 1:06:35SPEAKER_01: Not in a tearing down way.
- 1:06:36SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes, yes.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_01: My wife builds me up more than anybody else,
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_01: but when I get too prideful,
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_01: she's also not afraid to look me in the face and say.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, too big for your britches.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_01: Stop being an idiot.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, pivoting a little bit.
- 1:06:51I'm curious as like a leader of people and delegating and doing
- 1:06:56all that kind of
- 1:06:57stuff and even just kind of the infectious passion of like
- 1:07:03bringing people
- 1:07:04alongside what you're doing and getting them excited about
- 1:07:06whatever it is you're
- 1:07:07doing or like enabling that sort of passion within them for
- 1:07:10whatever they're doing.
- 1:07:12How do you feel like,
- 1:07:13I don't know,
- 1:07:14leading creativity threatens like your own creativity?
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah.
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_02: And then aside, like what are the, what, what inspires you creatively?
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:07:29SPEAKER_01: I think I have created less the more that I get other people to create.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_03: Hmm.
- 1:07:50SPEAKER_01: And I struggled with that for a long time.
- 1:07:53And I would try to force it for me to create in the same way
- 1:07:58that I used to.
- 1:08:01SPEAKER_01: But I think that over time, creativity shifts.
- 1:08:04SPEAKER_01: I have a great friend of mine.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_01: His name's Efren.
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_01: And he was, I think he still is.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure.
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_01: I think he got promoted or something.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_01: But he was pretty high up in SWOT.
- 1:08:19SPEAKER_01: And he was my neighbor.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_01: We were outside all hanging out with a couple dudes.
- 1:08:23And I started talking about creativity and wanting people to
- 1:08:28just generally be more creative.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_01: And I think I shared a poem or something that I'd written.
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_01: And he goes, man, let me show you something.
- 1:08:38And he pulls out his phone and goes back and back and back and
- 1:08:41back and pulls up
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_01: these poems that he had written years ago.
- 1:08:46SPEAKER_01: and was like,
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_01: man,
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_01: when I first got saved,
- 1:08:49SPEAKER_01: when I was first,
- 1:08:50SPEAKER_01: like I graduated high school,
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_01: I would just write poetry and Christian rap lyrics all the time,
- 1:08:57SPEAKER_01: because he was listening to guys like Trip Lee and Lecrae and Braille.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_01: NF.
- 1:09:03SPEAKER_01: NF, dude, like all these different guys.
- 1:09:05And was like,
- 1:09:06he would sit down specifically,
- 1:09:09oh,
- 1:09:09no,
- 1:09:09no,
- 1:09:10not Tripoli,
- 1:09:10Shai Lin.
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_01: Shai Lin specifically,
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_01: if you've never listened to him,
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_01: he's just like a theologian over a rap beat.
- 1:09:17SPEAKER_01: Epic.
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_01: He has a song called The Hypostatic Union.
- 1:09:21And it's like the hypothetical union is the fact that God is
- 1:09:24100% man and 100% God
- 1:09:26SPEAKER_01: at the same time.
- 1:09:26SPEAKER_01: That was Jesus.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_01: And he explains that in a rap song.
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_01: Incredible.
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_01: And it is awesome.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_01: He has two albums, Lyrical Theology 1 and Lyrical Theology 2.
- 1:09:36SPEAKER_01: It's unbelievable.
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_01: So Efren was telling me he was listening to this guy all the time.
- 1:09:41SPEAKER_01: And he would sit down and try to write deep thoughts just like that.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_01: And he goes, man, I just miss it.
- 1:09:49SPEAKER_01: And me, being the infectious passion person I am, I'm like, effort.
- 1:09:53SPEAKER_01: I grab him and I'm like, you can do it, dude.
- 1:09:55SPEAKER_01: Like, just start writing again and all these things.
- 1:09:58SPEAKER_01: And he goes, well, bro, I don't feel like I'm not creative anymore.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_01: But he goes, every day, my creativity is how to not die.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_01: As I'm breaking down doors to these houses.
- 1:10:14SPEAKER_01: Creativity evolves and changes over time.
- 1:10:18SPEAKER_01: This last couple of years, I've written less songs.
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_01: The songs I've written, I think, are more deep and meaningful.
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_01: But they're not forced.
- 1:10:29SPEAKER_01: I've written less songs.
- 1:10:32SPEAKER_01: But I've thought up and started more businesses.
- 1:10:39And I have creatively problem solved in those businesses more
- 1:10:44than I ever have.
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_01: A lot of that creative energy is going into problem solving.
- 1:10:53SPEAKER_01: I think that creativity to be summed up could be just that.
- 1:11:01is problem solving because you want to sit down and write a
- 1:11:04song and there's a
- 1:11:06problem in you that you need to get out and talk about and fix
- 1:11:10and there's a chord
- 1:11:11that's how you resonate with that problem solving exactly right
- 1:11:14there's a chord
- 1:11:15that you need to hear and that chord's not right well i'm going
- 1:11:18to problem solve to
- 1:11:19figure out what chord goes next yeah and all that kind of stuff
- 1:11:23i think that um
- 1:11:25that has been a tough pill for me to swallow yeah but i go in
- 1:11:29bursts there's like a
- 1:11:31mourning and grieving process with that yeah but more recently
- 1:11:35um just today i i
- 1:11:37grabbed the guitar one of the things that i've been loving
- 1:11:40creativity wise is um
- 1:11:42Getting to create content for Global Creation Foundation to try
- 1:11:46to get the word out
- 1:11:46SPEAKER_01: there,
- 1:11:46SPEAKER_01: like we talked about a little while ago.
- 1:11:49But it's seriously so creative for me to think up new content
- 1:11:55and go shoot a funny video.
- 1:11:57SPEAKER_01: So creative.
- 1:11:59SPEAKER_01: But it's not song.
- 1:12:00SPEAKER_01: In my mind, songwriting is what I do.
- 1:12:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_02: There's an identity piece there that now...
- 1:12:08is shifting because of the types of creativity that you're
- 1:12:11involved in now yeah um
- 1:12:14yeah that's really nuanced and subtle that's a really
- 1:12:17interesting insight because i
- 1:12:19often think about like i don't know how do you how do you have
- 1:12:24like the bite-sized
- 1:12:25version of explaining to people like the creativity that you
- 1:12:29deliver like what are
- 1:12:30the deliverables that you have and for so long it was like oh
- 1:12:33photo and film and
- 1:12:34SPEAKER_02: all this kind of stuff and then
- 1:12:37you change as a person and there's a kind of a morphine and
- 1:12:42evolution that happens.
- 1:12:43And then creativity is like having this conversation with you
- 1:12:47and like thinking of
- 1:12:48the questions that I want to ask you and the types of insights
- 1:12:50that I want to gain
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_02: from like having this conversation with you.
- 1:12:55SPEAKER_02: Um, and, and then like, yeah, that's the creative output or whatever.
- 1:12:59SPEAKER_02: That's really fascinating.
- 1:13:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:13:01SPEAKER_01: And when it comes to what inspires me, dude, I mean, I think that, um,
- 1:13:06This last year,
- 1:13:07I have read some of the best fiction I have ever read in my
- 1:13:10entire life,
- 1:13:11Matt.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_01: It has changed my whole world.
- 1:13:14SPEAKER_01: And I know that you disagree with this.
- 1:13:16SPEAKER_00: Please don't say Brandon Sanderson.
- 1:13:18SPEAKER_00: It's Brandon Sanderson, dude.
- 1:13:19SPEAKER_00: It is the best.
- 1:13:20SPEAKER_00: It is peak.
- 1:13:22SPEAKER_02: I do agree with you that Mistborn is like...
- 1:13:27SPEAKER_02: Top of the line, amazing.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_02: And I do think the world building is just insane.
- 1:13:33And I got to give that guy credit for sticking with all the
- 1:13:37world building that he does.
- 1:13:38SPEAKER_02: It's just not my cup of tea, which I can totally respect.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_02: Just like I know that rap is like totally an amazing genre of music.
- 1:13:46Not my cup of tea,
- 1:13:48but I understand that it's valuable on its own without me
- 1:13:52having to like it.
- 1:13:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, 100%.
- 1:13:55SPEAKER_01: Um, but for me, I'm inspired.
- 1:13:58SPEAKER_01: I'm inspired by Mistborn a hundred percent.
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_01: I mean,
- 1:14:03SPEAKER_01: I think that,
- 1:14:04SPEAKER_01: um,
- 1:14:05SPEAKER_01: on the writing side of things,
- 1:14:06SPEAKER_01: absolutely him on the songwriting side of things.
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_01: Um,
- 1:14:10SPEAKER_01: guys like Briston Moroney,
- 1:14:11SPEAKER_01: there's an artist named Slim Dan that not a lot of people know about.
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_01: He is so incredible.
- 1:14:18SPEAKER_01: Um,
- 1:14:18lizzie mcalpine i love her stuff i mean just unbelievable john
- 1:14:24bellion um has a
- 1:14:26whole youtube series that is basically the making of and then
- 1:14:30every single one of
- 1:14:31his top hits yeah that they are some of the most inspiring if
- 1:14:36you're ever like
- 1:14:37lagging or being like man i just don't feel creatively inspired
- 1:14:41it's like go watch
- 1:14:42SPEAKER_01: those videos and there's no way that you
- 1:14:45SPEAKER_01: end that video without going, dang, I gotta do something with my life.
- 1:14:50SPEAKER_01: It's absolutely incredible.
- 1:14:53I mean,
- 1:14:53he's like a true genius,
- 1:14:56I think,
- 1:14:56when it comes to producing and lyrics and all that.
- 1:14:59SPEAKER_02: I mean, some of my favorite
- 1:15:01He is a weird artist for me because I don't really like his
- 1:15:04music that much.
- 1:15:05SPEAKER_02: But, like, he's such a deep lyricist.
- 1:15:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:15:08SPEAKER_02: Like,
- 1:15:09SPEAKER_02: Stupid Deep and Conversations with My Wife are,
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_02: like,
- 1:15:13SPEAKER_02: some of the best songs ever written,
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_02: in my opinion.
- 1:15:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's just sort of all over the map when it comes.
- 1:15:20SPEAKER_01: On his new album, he has a song called My Boy.
- 1:15:22SPEAKER_01: It goes, Stay young, stay small, my boy.
- 1:15:29SPEAKER_01: Oh, brutal.
- 1:15:30SPEAKER_01: And it, like, I wept in my car to that song.
- 1:15:34SPEAKER_02: I'm picturing Verena doing... Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:15:36SPEAKER_02: And... She's not a boy.
- 1:15:38SPEAKER_02: She's a girl.
- 1:15:39SPEAKER_02: But same deal.
- 1:15:41SPEAKER_02: And then he, like, raps a prayer in the middle of it.
- 1:15:43SPEAKER_01: And it's just so raw and amazing and unfiltered.
- 1:15:46SPEAKER_01: And I just... I just... I love it.
- 1:15:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:15:50SPEAKER_01: I think...
- 1:15:53SPEAKER_01: as creatives,
- 1:15:54SPEAKER_01: as artists,
- 1:15:56SPEAKER_01: the more we rip out our hearts and go like,
- 1:16:01SPEAKER_01: hey,
- 1:16:02here's where I'm bleeding and this is where I got stabbed and
- 1:16:06this is like all
- 1:16:07SPEAKER_01: these different things.
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_01: The more that we do that in the
- 1:16:12in the music that we write,
- 1:16:13in the poems that we write,
- 1:16:15the more people relate with it.
- 1:16:18SPEAKER_01: Because in all the deep, hard things that we go through, we're not alone.
- 1:16:23SPEAKER_01: And even though we convince ourselves that we are.
- 1:16:26SPEAKER_01: And so when you write a song, Jack Harlow is a rapper.
- 1:16:33SPEAKER_01: He has a song that's called Gang, Gang, Gang.
- 1:16:38It is an incredible sample of this gang,
- 1:16:42gang,
- 1:16:42gang,
- 1:16:43gang,
- 1:16:43gang,
- 1:16:43gang,
- 1:16:44gang,
- 1:16:44gang.
- 1:16:44SPEAKER_01: It's so awesome.
- 1:16:45SPEAKER_01: He just samples that.
- 1:16:46But literally,
- 1:16:48it's a song about childhood friends of his that have now become
- 1:16:52pedophiles.
- 1:16:53And hearing about this whole concept and being like,
- 1:16:57hey,
- 1:16:57did you hear about so-and-so?
- 1:16:59SPEAKER_01: He's in jail now.
- 1:17:00SPEAKER_01: And all these kind of things.
- 1:17:01SPEAKER_01: That is, here you go, look.
- 1:17:04SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 1:17:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:17:05And I love that song because I have friends of mine that I look
- 1:17:10at now and go,
- 1:17:11SPEAKER_01: dude,
- 1:17:12SPEAKER_01: what are you doing?
- 1:17:13Like I thought we were going to be,
- 1:17:15the whole concept is gang,
- 1:17:16gang,
- 1:17:17gang.
- 1:17:17SPEAKER_01: I thought we were going to be homies forever,
- 1:17:21but we're not anymore because of the choices you've made or
- 1:17:26because of the choices
- 1:17:27SPEAKER_01: I've made to get away from you a lot of times.
- 1:17:30SPEAKER_01: And the more vulnerable we can be, it's amazing.
- 1:17:33SPEAKER_01: So music like that, it just hits me.
- 1:17:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it opens you up.
- 1:17:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:17:39SPEAKER_01: Do some open heart surgery on you.
- 1:17:41SPEAKER_01: Seriously, come on.
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_01: And also...
- 1:17:46shakespeare and edgar allen poe oh yes well those those are the
- 1:17:49like uh the goats
- 1:17:51of being able to do that when i but in a really cool funny
- 1:17:55eloquent miserable yeah
- 1:17:57all the emotions way yeah when i heard the raven for the first
- 1:18:02time eighth grade i
- 1:18:03had to memorize a poem and recite it and i memorized a fourth
- 1:18:07of the raven and it
- 1:18:10SPEAKER_01: has changed my life
- 1:18:14SPEAKER_01: learning about how he wrote it and,
- 1:18:17SPEAKER_01: um,
- 1:18:18SPEAKER_01: things like,
- 1:18:19SPEAKER_01: uh,
- 1:18:19SPEAKER_01: the silken,
- 1:18:20SPEAKER_01: sad,
- 1:18:20SPEAKER_01: uncertain wrestling of each purple curtain thrilled me,
- 1:18:24SPEAKER_01: filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before.
- 1:18:27SPEAKER_01: Like what is happening?
- 1:18:29SPEAKER_01: Um, uh,
- 1:18:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's just... That's amazing.
- 1:18:34SPEAKER_01: From my books, I sought to borrow Sir Cease of Sorrow.
- 1:18:37SPEAKER_01: It's like, what is happening?
- 1:18:39SPEAKER_01: It's such amazing lyricism.
- 1:18:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and language and forms the way that you write lyrics and stuff.
- 1:18:46SPEAKER_02: Totally.
- 1:18:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, dude.
- 1:18:48SPEAKER_02: That's what inspires me.
- 1:18:49SPEAKER_02: That's amazing.
- 1:18:50SPEAKER_02: That's a very good answer.
- 1:18:52I always try to end these conversations by asking a question of
- 1:18:56our last guest for
- 1:18:57SPEAKER_02: our next guest.
- 1:18:59SPEAKER_02: And so the question that has been asked for you,
- 1:19:02SPEAKER_02: and I think you've answered a little bit of this,
- 1:19:04SPEAKER_02: but maybe we can expound a bit more.
- 1:19:07What is a creative wrestling or stirring that you haven't
- 1:19:10answered that keeps
- 1:19:10SPEAKER_02: coming up in your life?
- 1:19:12SPEAKER_02: And how will you take it seriously?
- 1:19:19SPEAKER_01: I want to write a book.
- 1:19:20SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:19:22SPEAKER_01: Someday.
- 1:19:26SPEAKER_01: And writing this time manual has felt like writing a book.
- 1:19:35SPEAKER_01: Oh, forgive me.
- 1:19:35SPEAKER_01: I'm not going to remember her name right now.
- 1:19:37SPEAKER_01: But I just.
- 1:19:38SPEAKER_01: So Ryan Trahan.
- 1:19:41SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 1:19:42SPEAKER_01: Haley Pham.
- 1:19:43SPEAKER_01: Haley Pham.
- 1:19:44SPEAKER_01: Just put out a video.
- 1:19:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's in my queue to watch.
- 1:19:48SPEAKER_01: Just put out a video that is documenting her writing a book.
- 1:19:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:19:51SPEAKER_01: And I just watched it and it was one of the most inspiring things.
- 1:19:54SPEAKER_01: I have not seen it yet, so no spoilers.
- 1:19:56SPEAKER_01: It's just insane.
- 1:19:58SPEAKER_01: I just love them.
- 1:19:59SPEAKER_01: They're amazing.
- 1:20:00SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 1:20:01And so watching that was just,
- 1:20:04it's just like,
- 1:20:04again,
- 1:20:05it just feels like it keeps coming up.
- 1:20:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:20:06SPEAKER_01: And so one day I want to do that.
- 1:20:09SPEAKER_01: When am I going to have time to do that?
- 1:20:10SPEAKER_01: I don't know, but I know that the only way that it's going to happen
- 1:20:13SPEAKER_01: is by small, well-placed chops over a long period of time.
- 1:20:18SPEAKER_02: Consistency over time gets big, big growth.
- 1:20:22SPEAKER_01: It's also recording more music.
- 1:20:26There's so much that lives on the voice memos of my phone that
- 1:20:30I wish could be on
- 1:20:31SPEAKER_01: Apple Music and Spotify,
- 1:20:32SPEAKER_01: and it's not yet.
- 1:20:34SPEAKER_01: And...
- 1:20:37SPEAKER_01: Working on that.
- 1:20:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:20:38SPEAKER_01: So there's a there's an EP out right now.
- 1:20:40SPEAKER_01: Oh, epic.
- 1:20:41SPEAKER_01: Under Seth Kaser.
- 1:20:42SPEAKER_01: What's that called?
- 1:20:44SPEAKER_01: That EP is called Chapters.
- 1:20:46SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:20:47SPEAKER_01: And it came out two days after Dougie was born.
- 1:20:52SPEAKER_01: The goal was for it to I'll tell the story.
- 1:20:55SPEAKER_01: The goal was for it to come out before Dougie was born.
- 1:20:59SPEAKER_01: And we actually put it out for publishing the day before he was born.
- 1:21:02SPEAKER_01: Hmm.
- 1:21:04SPEAKER_01: But in one of the songs, there was a curse word and I,
- 1:21:09kept going back and forth okay and i originally released it
- 1:21:13with a curse word okay
- 1:21:14and then i just decided you know what for sake of a lot of my
- 1:21:18students that would
- 1:21:19be listening for sake of of just what people can think
- 1:21:23sometimes yeah these things
- 1:21:24um i decided to to change that word and um so i took it down
- 1:21:30okay and then we went
- 1:21:31SPEAKER_01: in a couple days after dougie was born and re-recorded it
- 1:21:34and um so the original is still out on spotify or not on
- 1:21:38spotify on on soundcloud
- 1:21:40okay sick i will be looking censored version and then judging
- 1:21:43very quickly yes
- 1:21:44please go for it dude that's awesome um yeah so i i think that
- 1:21:51that those would be
- 1:21:52okay my thing sweet all right and what's uh what's a question
- 1:21:56you have for our next
- 1:21:57SPEAKER_02: guest
- 1:22:02SPEAKER_01: When you were a child,
- 1:22:07SPEAKER_01: like 10 and younger,
- 1:22:09SPEAKER_01: what was a form of creativity that you used to freely create in?
- 1:22:20SPEAKER_02: Okay, sweet.
- 1:22:22SPEAKER_02: I'm excited to see who will have that question.
- 1:22:25SPEAKER_02: Awesome.
- 1:22:26SPEAKER_02: I love that question.
- 1:22:27SPEAKER_02: Have you asked that before?
- 1:22:28SPEAKER_01: I've, I've been asked that before.
- 1:22:31SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:22:32SPEAKER_01: And I, when I was at school of worship, um, at Calvary Costa Mesa, um,
- 1:22:40There was an amazing teacher who was teaching a class called
- 1:22:44Cultivating Creativity.
- 1:22:45And that's how he opened up the class,
- 1:22:47was by asking the entire class that question.
- 1:22:49SPEAKER_01: And each of us had to answer it.
- 1:22:52SPEAKER_01: And then the whole thing was, go back to that this week.
- 1:22:55SPEAKER_01: Awesome.
- 1:22:56SPEAKER_01: It was awesome.
- 1:22:58SPEAKER_02: What was your answer?
- 1:23:00SPEAKER_01: Words.
- 1:23:01SPEAKER_02: Nice.
- 1:23:03SPEAKER_01: I used to talk a lot, a lot, a lot.
- 1:23:04SPEAKER_01: So I wrote a spoken word.
- 1:23:06SPEAKER_01: Oh, epic.
- 1:23:07And then the next week's assignment after that was to record
- 1:23:11that spoken word over
- 1:23:13SPEAKER_01: music that I had written.
- 1:23:15SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:23:15SPEAKER_01: And I did that and it was sick.
- 1:23:17SPEAKER_01: Oh, cool.
- 1:23:17SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 1:23:18SPEAKER_01: Dude, that's awesome.
- 1:23:19SPEAKER_02: Well, thank you for taking the time, my friend.
- 1:23:21SPEAKER_02: The sun is now setting.
- 1:23:23SPEAKER_01: The sun is now set.
- 1:23:24SPEAKER_01: That's our timer.
- 1:23:25And thank you for being so generous with your afternoon and
- 1:23:30answering all my
- 1:23:31SPEAKER_02: questions and being vulnerable.
- 1:23:33SPEAKER_02: And yeah,
- 1:23:35this is like the reason I love doing this is because I learned
- 1:23:37so much about the
- 1:23:38SPEAKER_02: people that I already admire and care a lot about.
- 1:23:41And then they're so giving and available and ready to kind of
- 1:23:46dive into whatever
- 1:23:48SPEAKER_02: investigative, like vulnerable questions I have for them.
- 1:23:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah,
- 1:23:53so I'm just really grateful and appreciative of you taking the
- 1:23:57time and being
- 1:23:58SPEAKER_02: willing to step into this.
- 1:24:00SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
