- 0:00Here's your host, Alex Garrett. All right, Well, as you might
- 0:06know by now, I have turned thirty two. And to those of you
- 0:11wishing my personal page a very happy birthday, thank you so much. My
- 0:16girlfriend here has made it a great one, Gabriella, and as as my
- 0:20on air radio family. But before we get to the media highlights of this
- 0:25birthday weekend, I just want to say thank you to a few very important
- 0:33people to make getting to thirty two possible. And of course it starts with
- 0:39my mom, who literally gave birth and has been a dedicated mother forever and
- 0:48will continue to be. And I just hope and pray that I've been as
- 0:54dedicated us unto her as I could be. And I love her very much.
- 1:00And of course she's carried me now to thirty two. And we both
- 1:07struggled with the loss of my dad, but of course he's another reason why
- 1:11I'm here at thirty two. While he has unfortunately left us, the indelible
- 1:21impact will never be forgotten, will never be replaced, will never be duplicated
- 1:30ever. Again, my father was, as one of my friends Billy Canal
- 1:37would say, an institution. He was always there. He even took me
- 1:42to the nick You every year to say thank you to the hard working nurses
- 1:46and doctors. We'll get to that a little bit later. In this episode
- 1:49of the Roosevelt Saint Luke's System, Nick You and the two of them start
- 2:00the journey out thirty two years ago, a parenthood in very unusual circumstances,
- 2:07but because both of them have taught me in their own ways, have guided
- 2:12me in their own ways, have loved me unconditionally in their own ways,
- 2:17We're here. We're here, thirty two years later, and how can I
- 2:21forget my stepdad Vic. Vic's first real impact on my family was actually my
- 2:30belief seventh birthday. My grandmother's stove was not working the day and my birthday
- 2:36party, and Vic came in and said, I'm going to fix it.
- 2:40And, as he likes to say, he feels like he had forehead written
- 2:44all over a son in law written all over his forehead as far as my
- 2:47grandmother was concerned. Because my very first or his very first birthday celebration for
- 2:55me and with my family, he already went to work fixing things. And
- 3:01he has been that steady, stable father. He's been that seati stable husband
- 3:15to my mom. And it all started on my seventh birthday. I love
- 3:20before that, but that was when he really was welcoming to the family.
- 3:23And he's been with us ever since. And of course he's a big reason
- 3:27why, because I was saying about this yesterday. Who made the runs for
- 3:30Alimentum when I knew them the most during those you know, early years.
- 3:36My stepdad Vic, who would get us to the hospital almost every time we
- 3:40needed it. Well, when he came to my life, Vic was always
- 3:46there to get us to him from to make sure we got the proper medical
- 3:50care. Who was there to literally put a roof over our head the last
- 3:57twenty plus years, my stepdad and so and his lessons, I mean,
- 4:03the biggest advice and I continue to taking his advice. But the biggest thing
- 4:09that's ever gotten me the last it's twelve fourteen years into adulthood and beyond,
- 4:15is the fact that he said you should go to Queen's College and Boom took
- 4:20his advice made it happen, And that wisdom he shares year in and year
- 4:27out sticks with me. And he's been as much of a presence in my
- 4:33life and deserves as much praise for getting us to another year around the sun
- 4:39as they say, So thank you Mom, Pops or missed you and dad
- 4:44Vic love you so much. And how can I forget We'll talk a little
- 4:49more about that later in the show with Gabby and I, But how can
- 4:53I forget my partner in crime in the last five years though on and off,
- 5:00but you know, she's been there. She's helped me get to this
- 5:05point as well, because I think Gabby knows it as well as anybody.
- 5:11And so while we're out here venturing and taking care of each other and supporting
- 5:15each other, yeah, we have each other's back in the health department.
- 5:18And Gabby is a huge reason why we're able to celebrate thirty two this birthday
- 5:25weekend because she's done as much as anybody to keep to keep me on my
- 5:30toes and help me stay healthy. And you'll find out later in this episode
- 5:33how much I truly love this woman. I mean, it's to the point
- 5:36of a very special announcement that I want to break to you on the One
- 5:41Leg Up with Alex Scarrett podcast. But I do love her so much,
- 5:46and she's in the circle of trust if you will, as they would say,
- 5:50and meet the parents circle of trust. And I love Gabby so much.
- 5:57I admit be doing a little better in the self care department, but
- 6:02to have this supportive team and family and the guidance from my grandmother and her
- 6:10wisdom for all these years, it sticks with you, and it's definitely stuck
- 6:17with me. And this is thirty two years in the making. One radio
- 6:24colleague, Lou Terminala's takey here. Im often tip me off to this part
- 6:30of the Other Side of Midnight with Frank Morano, and this says, the
- 6:32Other Side of Midnight, We're gonna do fifteen seconds of fame in a moment.
- 6:36Those of you that have called in on free will, We're gonna try
- 6:39and get to one or two more calls real quick before we do fifteen seconds.
- 6:43Since you guys have been patientenough to hold I want to wish a happy
- 6:46birthday to my friend Alex Garrett. Alex Garrett is a great guy who I've
- 6:50known for about a decade and he works at another radio station. But he's
- 6:57really progressed so much, and he's I've been one of the producers of the
- 7:01Cats Round Table and a lot of you here on Sundays and a great guy.
- 7:04I was just a guest on his podcast and if you want, I
- 7:09linked to it on my Facebook page Facebook dot com slash moranofan Facebook dot com
- 7:14slash Morano fan. Let me tell you about Alex. Alex is celebrating his
- 7:16birthday today. I hope all's wishes come true. Alex was born with one
- 7:20leg and he gets around town better than I do on a rollerblade, goes
- 7:27everywhere on town on a rollerblade. And here's a guy who has had,
- 7:30you know, a significant disadvantage dealt to him. He's not able to do
- 7:35a lot of the things that people with two legs can do. And in
- 7:39the decade or so that I've known him, maybe twelve years that I've known
- 7:42him, I have not known him to feel bad for himself once. And
- 7:46he's a wonderful guy. And I hope he has a happy birthday and that
- 7:50owl's wishes come true today and always, and very very special little shout out
- 7:58there, thank you Frank for including me on your nationally syndicated WABC radio show.
- 8:03That that is cool. And then last night we had a jazz singer,
- 8:09great singer, Vanessa Rocchi on the Arthur Idella Power Hour, And for
- 8:13the second year in a row, by the way, Arthur. I've got
- 8:16an engineer Arthur's show and helped him and Joni Pels are out and Arthur had
- 8:20this request of our guest Vanessa Racci. So can I get like maybe one
- 8:26or two bars of a happy birthday for our producer, for our engineer today,
- 8:30Alex Garrett. Absolutely, yeah, you can do an Italian or English.
- 8:33Yeah, do the Italian way, the Italian ways more from it's Italian
- 8:37heritage month. So wait, what's his name? Sorry, Alex? Alex
- 8:41again, Yes, this is my birthday today? Is it a big one?
- 8:46It's thirty two, which is every birthday after being a nick you baby
- 8:48for seventy seven days? Is a birthday a big birthday? Oh amazing.
- 8:52Well, I'll wluity to you and now I'm going to sten to you an
- 8:56Italian here we got bon compliano, Wati bon comble No, Alex won compliano.
- 9:13Thank you so much. That is awesome. Thank you having a wonderful
- 9:20And then also I did get to visit the nick You the neonatal intensive care
- 9:26unit up at now mountsime My West formerly Saint luc Rosevelt Hospital, and obviously
- 9:33not having my dad here for my birthday has been very tough and very emotional,
- 9:39but I did get to place him on the grounds where he became a
- 9:43father yesterday, spreading a few of his ashes outside the hospital where I was
- 9:46born. And then the remaining active doctor, doctor Colabio, brought me upstairs
- 9:54with the Nick You for year thirty two, a tradition my dad and my
- 9:58mom and I had for so many years, and that you know that personal
- 10:01relationship with those childhood doctors could continue on in adulthood. Believe me, my
- 10:07childhood surgeon and doctor Claudio have helped me figure out what's been going on with
- 10:13my body as I've been growing up, as the scar on my stomach has
- 10:18been kind of leaking, if I may say, and they've both been a
- 10:22great help to figure out what's been up with that thirty two years later,
- 10:28But it was it was special to go up to the Nick You. And
- 10:31then of course it's probably been announced. You probably hear it on the radio
- 10:37if you're listening to A nine seventy the answer constantly. But yes, Nick
- 10:41de Moro, Senior and Junior and World Gabrielle and I are engaged. And
- 10:48that's kind of the biggest birthday gift I could have coming into our ending year
- 10:54thirty one and coming into year thirty two. And may this engagement be prosperous
- 10:58and healthy and godly and loving toward each other and forever more. And yes,
- 11:07there will be a wedding. We don't know when, but stay tuned
- 11:09for this podcast. But yes, and engagement has been had. We are
- 11:13going to make that announcement right here on the Alex Garrett Podcast Network. But
- 11:18here is the reveal on AM nine seving the answer earlier today. I have
- 11:24to put out a big shout out to Alex because the roovel has him just
- 11:30currently engaged to the beautiful Gabriella Pisani. This is not wrong, Nick,
- 11:37so thank you, and we're breaking that news here. That's right. I
- 11:41appreciate the honor of break hitting it on the air. So congratulations you to
- 11:48love Birds, Thank you, thank you very much. So we're we can't
- 11:56wait for the big days. Of course, the Demorros have been becoming not
- 12:01just radio colleagues but friends off the air as well, and they've had us
- 12:05at the lead Fest the last couple of years, so for this announcement to
- 12:11come on their show is pretty special. And yeah, if you have any
- 12:16thoughts on all of this shoot me an email at Alex at alex GANYC dot
- 12:20com. And you know, when I visited doctor Colabio yesterday at the nick
- 12:26Q, I gotta say I felt very fortunate that I had the healthcare that
- 12:33I needed to thrive and survive those seventy seven days in the nickqu and beyond.
- 12:41And it just brought me to this idea that why isn't there a better
- 12:45healthcare system in America? Why is it that pushes to get drug prices lower
- 12:54always seem to fall short and never really feel accomplished. Why do politicians who
- 13:01say they're out for our well being actually in the pockets of big pharma at
- 13:05the same time. Now, I know it's birthday weekend and maybe not the
- 13:09time to get political, but it just made me think how this healthcare system
- 13:16needs to totally be shaken up so that Nick, you, babies and moms
- 13:22to be and even fathers to be and those in general deserve to have that
- 13:26same care that was extended to my family and I, and I want your
- 13:31ideas on how to improve our healthcare system on Alex at ALEXGNYC dot com.
- 13:37I found a mission yesterday to figure out ways that our healthcare system could be
- 13:43better, could be more inclusive. I know it's controversial because you're gonna say,
- 13:48well, immigrants already get a lot of healthcare treatments, more so than
- 13:52Americans, And I just believe Americans and those that I'm here looking for a
- 14:00better life should have the equal access to healthcare. Americans don't even have good
- 14:07access to healthcare. That should change too. That should change too. And
- 14:13it's up to us to vote people in who don't have the pockets lined by
- 14:20the big pharma, if you will, Big Pharma doesn't understand the lengths that
- 14:26these doctors, these nurses, the Nike you nurses went too, and go
- 14:31to day after day. So while we may be frustrated with our own healthcare
- 14:35of times as we get into adulthood, maybe we should target the healthcare system's
- 14:41massive costs and not the doctor who is willing to spend time with us day
- 14:48after day. And yeah, there's the trope of the eight minute doctor that
- 14:50just comes in and sees you for eight minutes and then leaves and just pay
- 14:54the bill. But then he's not the right doctor. She's not the right
- 14:58doctor. Find that doctor who will literally sit with you and look at the
- 15:03images of your body like I've had the fortune of and spend an hour with
- 15:09you. Those are the types of doctors you want to be around. Those
- 15:11doctors exist, those nurses exist. So if you have a doctor that's in
- 15:16there for eight minutes with you, you're at the wrong place. Pal find
- 15:20the right doctors. They're out there, and I am living proof
