- 0:07Speaker 1: Hey, guys, we are back on Normally, the show with
- 0:09Speaker 1: normal-ish takes for when the news gets weird.
- 0:11Speaker 2: I am Mary Catherine Hamm.
- 0:12Speaker 3: I'm Carol Markowitz. How are you, Mary Catherine?
- 0:15Speaker 1: I'm doing all right. We made it through a rainy
- 0:17Speaker 1: weekend here. I know you don't experience these things. We
- 0:20Speaker 1: got the tail end of the Nor'easter, apparently, down here.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Was it okay by you guys?
- 0:26Speaker 1: Yeah, we were fine, but I was out, like, planting
- 0:29Speaker 1: plants because I thought that would be a good idea
- 0:30Speaker 1: this weekend.
- 0:31Speaker 2: I was just getting rained on.
- 0:34Speaker 1: It's fine.
- 0:35Speaker 3: We've had today's our third day in a row.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Of no rain.
- 0:39Speaker 3: I think our producer, John, probably doesn't want me to
- 0:41Speaker 3: jinx it. But it's it's, you know, September is a
- 0:44Speaker 3: really tough month in Florida. We're almost at the outside
- 0:48Speaker 3: of it.
- 0:49Speaker 2: You guys will make it. I believe in you.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Do you have any Halloween couple ideas for us? We
- 0:55Speaker 3: don't really dress up, but our adorable block has started
- 0:59Speaker 3: having Halloween parties and we feel like we kind of
- 1:01Speaker 3: have to. And you're the queen of this.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Let me brainstorm this for you.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Because I will come up with something for you guys.
- 1:07Speaker 2: I can do that.
- 1:08Speaker 3: My neighbor, we're friends with this couple that are our neighbors.
- 1:14Speaker 3: The husband was Sidney Sweeney last year from the American
- 1:16Speaker 3: Eagle Ed. And he's like, I kind of want to
- 1:18Speaker 3: be Sidney Sweeney again, but it's a lot harder this year.
- 1:21Speaker 2: It's trickier.
- 1:22Speaker 1: It's trickier. yes we are we are currently evaluating our
- 1:27Speaker 1: decisions for halloween you.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Guys bring it really well the big girls.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Have gone rogue though so i can't i cannot do
- 1:34Speaker 1: as much as i used to do which is fine
- 1:36Speaker 1: i want them to be able to construct their own
- 1:39Speaker 1: their own dreams and visions um so i don't know
- 1:42Speaker 1: i gotta psyop the little two into.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Doing it with me i guess My middle son, also
- 1:48Speaker 3: very rogue, and every year he has to explain to
- 1:51Speaker 3: us in a three-page paper what his costume's all about.
- 1:55Speaker 3: But this year, I mean, him and his friends were
- 1:57Speaker 3: thinking about a lot of things, but possibly Last Supper.
- 2:00Speaker 3: And I don't know if he's Jesus, but.
- 2:04Speaker 1: It's... That's a lot of friends, so, like, kudos for that.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Yes, they have a big crew that is going to
- 2:11Speaker 3: do some extremely dorky costume like that.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh.
- 2:14Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:16Speaker 3: All right. I mean, I guess if we have to
- 2:18Speaker 3: talk about politics.
- 2:20Speaker 2: I think we do.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. Well, this was a wild little weekend on
- 2:27Speaker 3: the old X platform. A couple of things. First of all,
- 2:32Speaker 3: there's this like anti Vivek Ramaswamy movement, and it is
- 2:37Speaker 3: from a fairly racist perspective. But it got kind of
- 2:42Speaker 3: taken up by people who are just like, arguing that
- 2:46Speaker 3: he's not good enough to be the governor of Ohio.
- 2:50Speaker 3: And I want to say very clearly, I was a
- 2:54Speaker 3: very anti Vivek person during the presidential primary. I thought
- 2:58Speaker 3: he's not actually a Republican. I don't see him as
- 3:00Speaker 3: a conservative at all. Um, he has a lot of
- 3:02Speaker 3: kooky ideas. He had a lot of crazy people around him.
- 3:05Speaker 3: He had, you know, multiple people saying questionable things. Um,
- 3:09Speaker 3: having said all of that, if I'm in Ohio, I
- 3:13Speaker 3: vote the crap out of him. Um, I don't know
- 3:16Speaker 3: how people have lost the plot, but not that long ago,
- 3:20Speaker 3: Democrats were in charge of a lot of things and
- 3:22Speaker 3: things were going far poorer than they're going today. And
- 3:26Speaker 3: I'm surprised that it's left to me to defend people
- 3:29Speaker 3: like Vivek or like Donald Trump. But here we are.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm basically with you on Vivek having having been
- 3:37Speaker 1: quite annoyed with him at various points when he's run
- 3:41Speaker 1: for things in the past.
- 3:44Speaker 2: I do think it's.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Interesting to try to figure out what is motivating voters
- 3:48Speaker 1: right now, because I do think there's a sense that
- 3:51Speaker 1: the Trump administration is like distracted and.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Is not caring about the things that are that are
- 3:56Speaker 2: bothering them.
- 3:56Speaker 1: I think for me, I look around and I go, OK,
- 3:59Speaker 1: the the the proposition was border under control. Yeah.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Prices, cost of living dealt with.
- 4:06Speaker 1: And then a lot of people were like into the
- 4:08Speaker 1: no new wars, although I didn't think that was his all.
- 4:11Speaker 3: I did not see that as Trump's like at all
- 4:15Speaker 3: projected policies. I don't understand why they got that. In fact,
- 4:19Speaker 3: it was people like Vivek that were saying things like
- 4:23Speaker 3: we need to cut off all funding to Ukraine and
- 4:26Speaker 3: a lot of other things that people then took what
- 4:28Speaker 3: Vivek was saying and made it seem like Trump was
- 4:30Speaker 3: saying it. And even at the time, I was like,
- 4:32Speaker 3: Trump is not the guy you keep saying he is.
- 4:36Speaker 3: And it makes no sense to me that you have
- 4:37Speaker 3: these beliefs, even though Trump openly talks about all the
- 4:41Speaker 3: different things that he'll do. On Ukraine, for example, he
- 4:46Speaker 3: was like, we might arm Ukraine more. Like he was,
- 4:50Speaker 3: he was not the guy that was going to be
- 4:52Speaker 3: an isolationist. And I don't understand why. what people missed
- 4:55Speaker 3: about that.
- 4:56Speaker 2: But I think so.
- 4:58Speaker 1: The border was dealt with extremely quickly, which too quickly, which,
- 5:02Speaker 1: by the way, is just proof that Biden was lying
- 5:06Speaker 1: about the entire time. Oh, yeah. Kamala, as were all
- 5:08Speaker 1: the Dems. OK, so that was taken care of. It
- 5:10Speaker 1: was taken care of so fast that I don't think
- 5:12Speaker 1: really he got the credit he deserved for it, nor
- 5:15Speaker 1: did they get the blame for all those years that
- 5:17Speaker 1: they deserved for it.
- 5:18Speaker 4: So true.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Iran has lasted long enough, I think, that people are
- 5:23Speaker 1: annoyed with it.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Also, obviously, annoyed with the gas prices.
- 5:26Speaker 1: And then the tariffs, to me, have always been a
- 5:28Speaker 1: misstep because it's like a big announcement that I'm going
- 5:31Speaker 1: to raise prices on some of the things that you
- 5:32Speaker 1: have to buy.
- 5:33Speaker 2: But it's for the greater good and whatever.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:35Speaker 3: OK.
- 5:35Speaker 2: He's always believed in that.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Yep.
- 5:38Speaker 1: He read on that.
- 5:39Speaker 3: I like it. I don't like it.
- 5:41Speaker 1: But.
- 5:42Speaker 3: To say that he didn't run on being this guy
- 5:45Speaker 3: makes no sense to me.
- 5:46Speaker 1: But those things combined, I think, make a lot of
- 5:49Speaker 1: voters who were 2024 voters go, I don't know. Oh,
- 5:52Speaker 1: the other prospect that I think was important was kind
- 5:54Speaker 1: of kneecapping woke. And he did that to a great degree.
- 5:58Speaker 1: And that's that's the thing that I appreciate perhaps the most.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 6:02Speaker 1: But I think people go, all right, well, I got
- 6:06Speaker 1: some of what I wanted here, but you're not paying
- 6:08Speaker 1: attention to my cost of living. And I don't feel
- 6:10Speaker 1: like you're making an argument for the Iran war. So like,
- 6:12Speaker 1: maybe I want something different. But and we'll talk about
- 6:15Speaker 1: this in the second segment, but I would look around
- 6:17Speaker 1: at the different offerings and realize that they are taking
- 6:20Speaker 1: you back.
- 6:20Speaker 2: To 2020 so fast. And I would take Ramaswamy every
- 6:24Speaker 2: day over that.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Absolutely. And the thing is to me that you are
- 6:28Speaker 3: voting between two parties, Republican or Democrat. There is no
- 6:32Speaker 3: other option. And the fact that you want to punish
- 6:36Speaker 3: Donald Trump for something by voting for Democrats is just
- 6:40Speaker 3: bananas to me. I mean, things like gas prices. Yes,
- 6:43Speaker 3: gas prices are like slightly elevated right now. I looked
- 6:47Speaker 3: at where the gas prices were when Donald Trump took office.
- 6:49Speaker 3: They're about a dollar more right now. Look, I get
- 6:52Speaker 3: that that's significant, but that's not anywhere near the astronomical
- 6:56Speaker 3: numbers that exist in places like run by Democrats like California.
- 7:00Speaker 3: It's just, yeah, it's just, you look at the red states,
- 7:03Speaker 3: the prices are cheaper than in the blue states. Make
- 7:05Speaker 3: the calculation yourself. I get that you want to punish
- 7:08Speaker 3: Donald Trump by voting for the people who make your
- 7:10Speaker 3: gas more expensive. Make it make sense.
- 7:13Speaker 1: No, I'm with you. It doesn't make sense to me.
- 7:15Speaker 1: There's places like Michigan where Al-Sayed will point at the
- 7:19Speaker 1: gas price and like Democrats have actively raised the tax
- 7:22Speaker 1: on gas like in the recent past. And that seems
- 7:26Speaker 1: like it cuts against him. But yeah, this is all
- 7:30Speaker 1: this is all. Part of the reason, I suppose, that
- 7:33Speaker 1: the Trump administration decided to run an ad on NFL
- 7:37Speaker 1: game on an NFL game this week that apparently was
- 7:41Speaker 1: taxpayer funded, which is a giant foul for me. That
- 7:46Speaker 1: is just y'all have a lot of money. Y'all have
- 7:49Speaker 1: a lot of money.
- 7:50Speaker 3: And donors who would happily run that ad. Just why?
- 7:54Speaker 1: Why?
- 7:55Speaker 3: Why are you making these kinds of missteps? It makes
- 7:57Speaker 3: no sense. You can't find an outside group to fund this. Really?
- 8:00Speaker 4: I could.
- 8:01Speaker 1: No, just like it's very easy. And it's also a
- 8:05Speaker 1: recycled ad. It's not even a brand new innovation. It's
- 8:09Speaker 1: an argument from 2024. Let's run what they ran on
- 8:14Speaker 1: that NFL game.
- 8:16Speaker 4: This is the final battle. With you at my side,
- 8:19Speaker 4: we will demolish the deep state. We will expel the
- 8:22Speaker 4: warmongers from our government.
- 8:24Speaker 5: We will drive out the globalists.
- 8:25Speaker 4: We will cast out the communists, Marxists, and fascists. We
- 8:29Speaker 4: will throw off the sick political class that hates our country.
- 8:33Speaker 4: We will rout the fake news media, and we will
- 8:36Speaker 4: liberate America from these villains.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Once and for all.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Argument has salience to me. I don't want to pay
- 8:45Speaker 2: for it.
- 8:45Speaker 1: It's not my job to pay for it.
- 8:47Speaker 2: This is totally out of line. No, thank you.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Right.
- 8:49Speaker 3: I just it's such a weird misstep. And of course,
- 8:53Speaker 3: like the people who just hate Donald Trump and hate
- 8:56Speaker 3: his administration, there's nothing you can do about it. Or
- 8:58Speaker 3: like he wants to send a message that he can
- 9:00Speaker 3: break the rules as needed. I don't understand. I don't
- 9:05Speaker 3: understand why I do this. I don't understand why I
- 9:07Speaker 3: do this when you know this is going to be
- 9:08Speaker 3: a topic of conversation. on even friendly news outlets, because
- 9:13Speaker 3: why did you do this? Like, have an outside group
- 9:16Speaker 3: pay for it.
- 9:17Speaker 2: You got lots of money.
- 9:18Speaker 1: I mean, the two things that, I mean, when we
- 9:20Speaker 1: talk about sort of general politics, the two things that
- 9:23Speaker 1: are saving the GOP or sort of shaving off some
- 9:27Speaker 1: of these losses, which are likely in an off year
- 9:30Speaker 1: like this, is the map and the money. There's lots
- 9:33Speaker 1: of money.
- 9:34Speaker 2: Lots of money. And it is being dumped into a lot.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Of these races, particularly the ones that are, you know,
- 9:40Speaker 1: most likely to be flipped in some of these red
- 9:44Speaker 1: states like Kentucky or Iowa. And so there will be
- 9:48Speaker 1: opportunities for defining these races that come mostly.
- 9:52Speaker 2: From the right. There is no shortage of this. Just
- 9:54Speaker 2: run it with that money.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Yeah. Another thing this weekend was Marjorie Taylor Greene tweeting
- 10:01Speaker 3: about a 400 strong, I think it's grown since then,
- 10:06Speaker 3: caravan of migrants coming from Honduras, going across Mexico and
- 10:10Speaker 3: trying to make their way to the U.S. southern border.
- 10:13Speaker 3: She tweets, we have not seen a caravan headed to
- 10:15Speaker 3: the U.S. southern border in several years. Why now? Oh, yeah,
- 10:19Speaker 3: there's an election coming up and the GOP needs to
- 10:21Speaker 3: scare you into voting because nothing else is working. This
- 10:25Speaker 3: was retweeted by Mehdi Hassan and also Sarah Longwell. So
- 10:30Speaker 3: when the super far right and the super far left
- 10:33Speaker 3: and the never Trumpers are all on the same side,
- 10:35Speaker 3: I feel like you need to take a beat and
- 10:37Speaker 3: be like, what's going on here? I don't want to
- 10:42Speaker 3: conspiracy theorize, but that is extremely suspicious to me that
- 10:46Speaker 3: Marjorie Taylor Greene is now, you know, the brave voice
- 10:50Speaker 3: that they listen to on the right. She has her problems, obviously,
- 10:55Speaker 3: with Donald Trump, but this whole, like, the Trump administration
- 10:59Speaker 3: is paying for a caravan of migrants from Honduras. Like,
- 11:02Speaker 3: break that down for me, Marjorie. Tell me how that works.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Let's get Candace in on it.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Also, the idea that, like, these. This is an old idea.
- 11:12Speaker 1: The idea that the caravans were never real and they
- 11:16Speaker 1: were just built for fear mongering is not true, because
- 11:20Speaker 1: as you see, they all now admit that the border
- 11:22Speaker 1: was a disaster. They just read it before because it
- 11:25Speaker 1: would lose them power and it would lose them this
- 11:27Speaker 1: magnet that they desperately wanted to bring a bunch of
- 11:30Speaker 1: people in. So I reject the entire notion that the
- 11:34Speaker 1: like that you get to comment on caravans and their
- 11:37Speaker 1: relative realness when you all closed your eyes for five,
- 11:42Speaker 1: six years.
- 11:43Speaker 3: Yeah. But that the woke right. you know, never-Trumper, far-lefter
- 11:49Speaker 3: alliance is really something to me. The woke right is
- 11:54Speaker 3: a term that I think James Lindsay came up with
- 11:56Speaker 3: it to describe the far right, which is not even
- 11:59Speaker 3: that right because, again, they end up taking the positions
- 12:02Speaker 3: that the far left would agree with.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Well, they're identitarians.
- 12:04Speaker 3: Yeah, so they're not, you know, on the political spectrum.
- 12:08Speaker 3: They're really not on the right. And it's been fascinating
- 12:13Speaker 3: to watch these people move ever leftward until they're being
- 12:18Speaker 3: retweeted by the Mehdi Hassans and Sarah Longwells of the world.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Interesting.
- 12:23Speaker 1: What a horseshoe.
- 12:27Speaker 3: That's not the ending I was thinking of, but yes.
- 12:30Speaker 6: Yes.
- 12:32Speaker 2: And then lastly, I mentioned the money. The map is
- 12:34Speaker 2: the other part of this that will.
- 12:39Speaker 1: You know, it remains to be seen. We do this
- 12:41Speaker 1: funny thing in Washington conventional wisdom, which is everyone will say, A,
- 12:47Speaker 1: no one pays attention until Labor Day. And then a
- 12:51Speaker 1: week after Labor Day, they'll say everything's baked in.
- 12:54Speaker 2: There's nothing you can do to change it.
- 12:55Speaker 3: Yeah. Which is it?
- 12:58Speaker 1: We both we say both that people don't start paying
- 13:00Speaker 1: attention there. And then you have a week to pay attention.
- 13:04Speaker 1: I think there is room for movement to some extent.
- 13:07Speaker 1: You can't overcome a bad environment sometimes. However, the Senate
- 13:11Speaker 1: race Senate map. and to some extent the House map,
- 13:15Speaker 1: are much more friendly to Republicans than they were in
- 13:19Speaker 1: like a 2006 or a 2018 when they got the
- 13:22Speaker 1: shellackings that they've gotten during other off years. So we
- 13:28Speaker 1: shall see how red the districts are that Democrats are
- 13:32Speaker 1: able to flip. I was listening to the Cook Political
- 13:35Speaker 1: Report and it's thinking like in the seven, like Trump
- 13:38Speaker 1: plus seven range. Well, those Senate seats are all in
- 13:40Speaker 1: Trump plus 11 to 14, the one thing.
- 13:42Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:43Speaker 1: So it is a trickier prospect.
- 13:46Speaker 3: Although a good year. Yeah. I think my bet, you know, today,
- 13:52Speaker 3: late September, is Republicans hold the Senate. And I get
- 13:57Speaker 3: that that's already considered a fringy view because the doomsayers
- 14:02Speaker 3: think that Republicans lose it all. But that's where I'm
- 14:05Speaker 3: putting my marker today. I think Republicans lose the House,
- 14:08Speaker 3: keep the Senate. Susan Collins, tough to beat.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Well, she's showing it. Also, we have the
- 14:15Speaker 1: question of polling, as we always do. There are a
- 14:17Speaker 1: lot more polls now. There's a lot of questions about
- 14:19Speaker 1: who finishes the polls, who participates in the polls, who
- 14:22Speaker 1: might be overpolled. But Susan Collins is showing up a
- 14:27Speaker 1: handful of points, and she was never up the last
- 14:30Speaker 1: time she ran.
- 14:31Speaker 3: Right, right, right.
- 14:32Speaker 2: What, like nine points or something?
- 14:34Speaker 1: So she's an interesting case and one to bet on
- 14:38Speaker 1: in general.
- 14:39Speaker 3: Yeah. And then the, you know, go back around to
- 14:42Speaker 3: Vivek on this. I think Vivek wins. I think Byron
- 14:45Speaker 3: Donalds wins handily in Florida. Those two are polling either
- 14:50Speaker 3: really close or, you know, the Democrats leading in some
- 14:53Speaker 3: of the polls. I just, if that happens, it's political earthquake. Fine.
- 14:57Speaker 3: I could be wrong, but I, you know, so officially
- 15:01Speaker 3: betting on, not actually betting, just saying the words out
- 15:04Speaker 3: loud on Republicans holding the Senate and Byron Donalds and
- 15:08Speaker 3: Vivek Ramaswamy both winning the governor's seats in their states.
- 15:13Speaker 3: We'll see. We'll keep you up to date on that.
- 15:15Speaker 3: We're going to take a short break and be right
- 15:18Speaker 3: back with more on Normally. We are back on Normally
- 15:25Speaker 3: where the left continues to cling to woke one, even
- 15:30Speaker 3: though they kind of laugh it off and they say
- 15:33Speaker 3: woke one is was so funny. Ha ha ha. It
- 15:36Speaker 3: was so crazy. So you're so crazy you left this
- 15:39Speaker 3: with your woke one.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Yeah, that ain't going to cut it. It's not.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Well, you have evidence of things where they really are clinging.
- 15:48Speaker 2: To it, as you say.
- 15:49Speaker 1: The most prominent of which is this effort to say
- 15:53Speaker 1: that 10 incidents of Black victims found hang across the
- 16:00Speaker 1: country between 2024 and now is.
- 16:05Speaker 1: An epidemic of racist and Jim Crow-inspired, or, you know,
- 16:11Speaker 1: Jim Crow-era-inspired lynchings. And... The facts simply don't bear that out,
- 16:18Speaker 1: but the Congressional Black Caucus is holding panels at their
- 16:22Speaker 1: annual event about it. The AP is tweeting about it
- 16:27Speaker 1: in such an incredibly dishonest way. The death of Tasha Fortune,
- 16:30Speaker 1: a Black Mississippi woman found hanging from a tree on
- 16:32Speaker 1: August 3rd, has stirred distressing memories of the grim history
- 16:36Speaker 1: of lynchings across the U.S.
- 16:37Speaker 2: South.
- 16:38Speaker 1: That has not been solved yet, but two Black men
- 16:41Speaker 1: have been arrested in.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Right.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Right.
- 17:03Speaker 3: That's right. A black man was found in August hanging
- 17:06Speaker 3: from a tree in Raleigh. And apparently he had mental issues,
- 17:10Speaker 3: but people are saying it couldn't possibly be suicide. His
- 17:13Speaker 3: death has indeed been ruled a suicide. Miss Rachel, who
- 17:16Speaker 3: is a children's performer. Yeah, I have a piece about
- 17:19Speaker 3: her out on the Fox News website today. But she said,
- 17:23Speaker 3: please listen to the black community. Black people don't hang
- 17:25Speaker 3: themselves from trees. Well, this man had a history of
- 17:28Speaker 3: mental issues and he did apparently hang himself from a tree.
- 17:32Speaker 3: She actually also commented on the death of Nolan Wells,
- 17:35Speaker 3: who we've touched on on the show, who drowned after
- 17:38Speaker 3: a boat trip near Mississippi's Horn Island. He was on
- 17:41Speaker 3: a trip with some people and ended up drowning. No
- 17:45Speaker 3: evidence whatsoever that the police investigation was questionable in any way,
- 17:51Speaker 3: but she obviously knows more and better and says that
- 17:55Speaker 3: the investigation would have been different if Nolan Wells had
- 17:58Speaker 3: been white. This kind of racist rhetoric really causes the
- 18:05Speaker 3: racial strife in our country. It leads people to believe
- 18:08Speaker 3: that Black victims are not treated the same way as
- 18:12Speaker 3: white victims. And I'm sorry, we're not living 80 years ago.
- 18:15Speaker 3: It's just not the same country that you... pretend it is.
- 18:19Speaker 3: And it really makes me crazy.
- 18:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:21Speaker 1: So Ayanna Pressley has led an effort that like some
- 18:25Speaker 1: 60 Democratic lawmakers have have signed on to to investigate
- 18:29Speaker 1: this further. And John McWhorter, who is a black intellectual,
- 18:34Speaker 1: writes for The New York Times. He examines this and says, like,
- 18:38Speaker 1: let the investigation go forward. But, you know, we can
- 18:41Speaker 1: never know exactly what happened in every case. But Presley's
- 18:45Speaker 1: idea that, quote, white people are hanging Black people for
- 18:48Speaker 1: the purpose of terrorizing Black communities and that local authorities
- 18:51Speaker 1: are consistently overlooking it or covering it up just seems
- 18:55Speaker 1: highly unlikely given what.
- 18:58Speaker 2: We know in all of these cases.
- 19:01Speaker 1: And in fact, saying as a Black community that this
- 19:03Speaker 1: is not what we do, that Black men don't hang themselves,
- 19:06Speaker 1: that Black people don't. he's like, that's not the same
- 19:10Speaker 1: as it never happening. This is a relatively small number
- 19:13Speaker 1: of people. And in fact, if we analyze it and
- 19:16Speaker 1: the facts, then we find that a lot of them
- 19:18Speaker 1: seem to have done that tragically. But compounding the tragedy
- 19:23Speaker 1: by making it this misinformation campaign, it's a terrible idea
- 19:27Speaker 1: and just screams of 2020 to me.
- 19:30Speaker 3: That's right. He's so great, John McGorder. Very worth reading.
- 19:34Speaker 3: And I think the fact that I mean, you know,
- 19:39Speaker 3: the social contagion of it is not discussed either. Like
- 19:42Speaker 3: after one person kills themselves in this manner, others start
- 19:46Speaker 3: to do it. I mean, this is, you know, somewhat related, but.
- 19:50Speaker 3: in Florida, there's the Bright Line train. And for a
- 19:52Speaker 3: long time, you know, people were dying by getting hit
- 19:56Speaker 3: by the Bright Line train. And the jokes online were like,
- 19:59Speaker 3: the Bright Line train is hungry and whatever. And then
- 20:03Speaker 3: it turned out that all of these or almost nearly
- 20:05Speaker 3: all of them were suicides. And what It really happens
- 20:09Speaker 3: is people don't get the story and people started to
- 20:12Speaker 3: believe that the bright line was unsafe. It's not unsafe.
- 20:15Speaker 3: People were killing themselves with the bright line. So I
- 20:18Speaker 3: think as the story spreads, people start to believe misinformation
- 20:22Speaker 3: and that's really unfortunate.
- 20:23Speaker 1: And this is one of the more pernicious types of misinformation.
- 20:27Speaker 1: And McWhorter makes the point like, you know, there was
- 20:31Speaker 1: a real and grisly threat of this kind of thing
- 20:34Speaker 1: in the past. But to pretend as if we are
- 20:36Speaker 1: living in that past.
- 20:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:57Speaker 3: Did we miss the lesbian bar news cycle unnormally? Did
- 21:01Speaker 3: we ever talk about that?
- 21:02Speaker 2: I don't know if we've talked about it, but we
- 21:03Speaker 2: should talk about it.
- 21:04Speaker 3: We should at least touch on it because it was
- 21:07Speaker 3: quite a story. I'm sure everybody's heard it by now.
- 21:10Speaker 3: This Western Massachusetts lesbian bar apparently was still masking up
- 21:15Speaker 3: in the year of our Lord, 2026. And they wanted
- 21:18Speaker 3: to have one night a week be mask optional. The
- 21:22Speaker 3: comments that they got were like, I hope your bar
- 21:25Speaker 3: gets firebombed. It was really, it reminded people what.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Woke One was really all about.
- 21:33Speaker 3: And I mean, just the insanity of it all. But
- 21:36Speaker 3: we're only telling you the summary of the story that
- 21:39Speaker 3: I know became the biggest story in the country for
- 21:41Speaker 3: a few days. to tell you about a related story. Yeah.
- 21:45Speaker 1: So the reaction to the lesbian bar story is interesting
- 21:49Speaker 1: because in 2020, that story would have been every person
- 21:54Speaker 1: abusing that bar owner from their she, they Zoom call
- 21:59Speaker 1: would have been lauded as stunning and brave. And the
- 22:04Speaker 1: bar owner who tried to do no masking would have
- 22:06Speaker 1: been called a grandma killer and a genocider or whatever
- 22:10Speaker 1: it is. Been there.
- 22:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:11Speaker 1: And, it was interesting because the left on X, a
- 22:15Speaker 1: lot of them were like, yeah, these people are wackos.
- 22:17Speaker 1: They torture us in all of our activism spaces and
- 22:21Speaker 1: maybe we shouldn't be.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Listening to them.
- 22:22Speaker 1: And I was like, well, this is an interesting turn
- 22:25Speaker 1: of events that we're allowed to admit that now. We
- 22:29Speaker 1: would have loved to have you guys in 2020 talking
- 22:32Speaker 1: about any of that abuse and how it was being
- 22:35Speaker 1: used against the rest of us normies.
- 22:37Speaker 2: But you guys weren't there.
- 22:39Speaker 1: So I was, Then you hear the Pod Save Bros
- 22:42Speaker 1: talking about another story. Have you seen these allegations against
- 22:46Speaker 1: Mary Peltola, who's running for Senate as a Democrat in Alaska?
- 22:49Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 22:50Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 22:51Speaker 1: So the allegations against her, broken by The New York Times,
- 22:53Speaker 1: from former staffers coming forward, I think all anonymously, which
- 22:57Speaker 1: I think you should put your name on it if
- 22:59Speaker 1: you're coming out with this stuff, accused her of yelling
- 23:02Speaker 1: at them, using slurs like the F-slur for gay people.
- 23:06Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 23:08Speaker 1: Forcing her staff to feed her pet lizard, which I
- 23:14Speaker 1: didn't think was a problem. That sounds like staff work
- 23:15Speaker 1: to me. Pushing staff, which is over the line.
- 23:20Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:21Speaker 2: And generally, like, making an uncomfortable working environment.
- 23:26Speaker 1: So John Lovett making excuses for all of this because
- 23:30Speaker 1: the left's new thing is like, hey, suck it up, buttercup.
- 23:33Speaker 1: That's right.
- 23:34Speaker 2: That's where they are now, he says. Have at it,
- 23:38Speaker 2: Mary Peltola.
- 23:39Speaker 1: It's all these things that we cared about so deeply
- 23:42Speaker 1: are totally fine.
- 23:43Speaker 2: Here he is making that argument.
- 23:46Speaker 6: Do I think it's great if a boss calls an
- 23:48Speaker 6: employee a f * * k? No, but I think
- 23:50Speaker 6: the Senate's more important. But now we're like, no, the
- 23:52Speaker 6: stakes are too high. And we've just been through too
- 23:56Speaker 6: many rounds of this. And the fact that there are
- 23:58Speaker 6: people that would be working for a Democratic member of
- 24:00Speaker 6: Congress who may have been rude and mean at the
- 24:03Speaker 6: darkest moment in her life, by the way, like after
- 24:06Speaker 6: experiencing incredible tragedy, and then six weeks before an election
- 24:10Speaker 6: to leak that to the Times. It is a privilege
- 24:15Speaker 6: to pretend you don't have to think about the stakes.
- 24:17Speaker 6: Everybody has to think about the stakes. And whether or
- 24:19Speaker 6: not Donald Trump can appoint right-wing anti-choice judges for two years,
- 24:24Speaker 6: whether or not we have genuine investigations in the Senate. Like,
- 24:27Speaker 6: these are the stakes in the election. And there's not
- 24:30Speaker 6: a gay guy from Austin to underneath the docks in
- 24:34Speaker 6: Provincetown who wouldn't be happily called a c * * *-
- 24:36Speaker 6: guzzling f * * * to have a Democratic Senate.
- 24:42Speaker 6: Just a mincing, butt-munching ass-pirate And if we have to
- 24:47Speaker 6: get Mary Peltola, honestly, we could knight her. Go to
- 24:51Speaker 6: find the gayest fucking person you can find in the
- 24:55Speaker 6: state of Texas, in the state of Alaska. Have her
- 24:58Speaker 6: kneel and have a sword go to both sides and say,
- 25:01Speaker 6: you may call us wherever the fuck you want, Mary Peltola,
- 25:03Speaker 6: if you win this seat.
- 25:10Speaker 1: Anyway, if you're listening, Mary Peltola, come on Pod Save America.
- 25:14Speaker 3: Jesus Christ. That'll help.
- 25:17Speaker 1: And I'll help in the homestretch.
- 25:18Speaker 6: You have to feed her lizard? And you're mad?
- 25:22Speaker 1: Then quit! Or shut up!
- 25:25Speaker 3: I mean, that guy has... just no bearings at all
- 25:29Speaker 3: he was on the Moynihan report recently with our friend
- 25:32Speaker 3: Michael Moynihan and he was talking about how he was
- 25:35Speaker 3: afraid to say plainly what he thought during woke one
- 25:39Speaker 3: but now he's like say whatever you think it's fine
- 25:42Speaker 3: we'll all forgive you it's okay.
- 25:44Speaker 1: He says we've been through too many rounds of this
- 25:48Speaker 1: as if it's the right weaponizing these things again. Like
- 25:53Speaker 1: y'all were the people who put yourselves through the rounds
- 25:56Speaker 1: of this. And look, I, although I do think it's
- 25:59Speaker 1: a good turn for the country in general, if people
- 26:02Speaker 1: do a little bit more buck up buttercup, just everyone.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Yeah. I do think it's out of line to push
- 26:09Speaker 2: your staff.
- 26:10Speaker 1: I do think it's worth talking if she throws around
- 26:14Speaker 1: the F word, as they say. And the people who
- 26:18Speaker 1: say it makes no difference should own that they're making
- 26:22Speaker 1: a Paxton-like deal with themselves, a Trump-like deal with themselves.
- 26:27Speaker 1: And That they didn't really care about any.
- 26:31Speaker 2: Of this back when they used it to.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Hurt the rest of us.
- 26:34Speaker 5: Right.
- 26:35Speaker 3: But also the fact that John Lovett is gay and
- 26:37Speaker 3: he's like, I don't care if you attack me for
- 26:39Speaker 3: being gay as long as you win. It's just you
- 26:43Speaker 3: guys said that identity mattered more than anything. It was
- 26:46Speaker 3: the most important thing in the world. And now it
- 26:48Speaker 3: doesn't matter at all. What happened?
- 26:50Speaker 2: Well, same thing that happened with Clinton and the feminists,
- 26:53Speaker 2: I guess.
- 26:53Speaker 4: Right.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Right.
- 26:54Speaker 2: You vote the right way.
- 26:56Speaker 1: And so it's fine. Yeah.
- 26:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it's not good. It is not good. But,
- 27:03Speaker 3: you know, I feel like Woke 2 is just as
- 27:05Speaker 3: crazy as Woke 1 was, and these people need to
- 27:08Speaker 3: be held continually accountable.
- 27:10Speaker 2: I mean, they're just going to, like, reverse it back
- 27:13Speaker 2: on us.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Whenever they want.
- 27:14Speaker 2: It's not like if you're caught saying something, they're going
- 27:16Speaker 2: to be like, I guess that's okay.
- 27:18Speaker 1: Right. Right. And I would never, you know what I mean?
- 27:21Speaker 3: Like the joke is that like conservatives really don't talk
- 27:26Speaker 3: like that. And it's like we don't talk in any
- 27:28Speaker 3: of the slurs that people pretend that we do. I'll
- 27:32Speaker 3: tell you just a quick story. There's this great song,
- 27:38Speaker 3: Fairytale of New York by the Pogues. And I was
- 27:40Speaker 3: talking to Tim Carney one year about how much I
- 27:42Speaker 3: love that song. And he's like, we can't play it
- 27:44Speaker 3: for the kids because it has the F word. And
- 27:45Speaker 3: I was like, wait, what's the F word in it?
- 27:47Speaker 3: And I hadn't even like really paid attention to the
- 27:49Speaker 3: fact that it had that F.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Word in it.
- 27:51Speaker 3: And now, you know, he does not play that song
- 27:53Speaker 3: for his children because that song isn't there. I mean,
- 27:56Speaker 3: that word isn't there. Now my children at the time,
- 27:59Speaker 3: I wasn't playing for them anyway, but that's what I,
- 28:02Speaker 3: what I see conservative values as you actually don't use
- 28:05Speaker 3: words like that. You actually don't, be okay with words
- 28:08Speaker 3: like that.
- 28:09Speaker 2: Can I add one bit of advice at the end
- 28:11Speaker 2: of this?
- 28:11Speaker 1: What I always tell young people when I talk to
- 28:13Speaker 1: them in Washington is if you are a staffer, look,
- 28:16Speaker 1: abusive is a different line, but things like the feeding
- 28:19Speaker 1: of the pet lizard, she lives away from her lizard frequently.
- 28:25Speaker 1: If she deems it your job to feed the lizard,
- 28:27Speaker 1: that seems like staff work to me, to a young staffer.
- 28:30Speaker 1: And also just do it, do your job well. Do
- 28:34Speaker 1: the things you were asked to do well. It is
- 28:36Speaker 1: not below you, actually. I got my first leg up
- 28:40Speaker 1: in politics in D.C. doing a thing that wasn't really
- 28:42Speaker 1: in my job description at all, but I did it
- 28:44Speaker 1: well and someone noticed. And they were like, hey, you
- 28:46Speaker 1: write pretty well. Maybe we should have you do that.
- 28:49Speaker 1: So just like, you know, take care of the chameleon.
- 28:52Speaker 1: The chameleon needs help.
- 28:53Speaker 3: Take care of the lizard.
- 28:54Speaker 4: Sure.
- 28:55Speaker 3: We're going to take a short break and be right
- 28:57Speaker 3: back with more on Normally.
- 29:02Speaker 2: Okie doke.
- 29:03Speaker 1: We are back on Normally with a story about marriage.
- 29:07Speaker 1: Two different stories about marriage and family. One, a New
- 29:10Speaker 1: York Times profile of an influencer who was a trad
- 29:14Speaker 1: wife and has since gotten divorced. It turns out it
- 29:17Speaker 1: was not a good situation. She alleges domestic violence and
- 29:20Speaker 1: has a restraining order against her former husband.
- 29:22Speaker 2: She has six kids.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Just an examination of how that went for her. That's sad,
- 29:30Speaker 1: but she seems to be like getting on her feet.
- 29:32Speaker 1: And I just think it's so much of this is
- 29:36Speaker 1: an indictment.
- 29:36Speaker 2: Of influencer culture.
- 29:38Speaker 3: Definitely.
- 29:40Speaker 4: Yep.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Audience capture and just living at these extremes instead of
- 29:45Speaker 1: acknowledging men and women have complementary traits.
- 29:49Speaker 2: Perhaps we went too far in one direction.
- 29:51Speaker 1: But let's get a little further back to the just
- 29:53Speaker 1: like the reasonable middle instead of going full pendulum swing.
- 29:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I really do think the influencer part
- 29:59Speaker 3: is a huge factor. deal here. Because of course, when
- 30:02Speaker 3: you get divorced, and you've like been portraying your marriage
- 30:05Speaker 3: as this perfect storybook thing online, and you've told people
- 30:09Speaker 3: how to have the marriage that you have, and you
- 30:10Speaker 3: have to follow these guidelines. I think that that, you know,
- 30:14Speaker 3: really does blow up in your face. Having said that,
- 30:17Speaker 3: I think that there are so many trad wives just
- 30:20Speaker 3: living quietly and not filming their sourdough. Yes. um you'll
- 30:25Speaker 3: never hear about whether or not they get divorced you'll
- 30:27Speaker 3: never know whether or not they live the rest of
- 30:29Speaker 3: their lives happily um and the influencing is what really
- 30:35Speaker 3: bothers me here that you they these women have this
- 30:38Speaker 3: unrealistic life that they portray to other people and of
- 30:42Speaker 3: course it's on the other side also you know every
- 30:44Speaker 3: time Chelsea Handler tells me how great her life is
- 30:47Speaker 3: without kids I'm like not really buying it lady right
- 30:50Speaker 3: um But, you know, that's what you get, right? If
- 30:53Speaker 3: she ever, Chelsea Handler ever gives in and says she
- 30:55Speaker 3: actually regrets not having children, we have all of her
- 30:58Speaker 3: videos to point to to be like, ha ha, you
- 31:01Speaker 3: were wrong.
- 31:02Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think all of.
- 31:03Speaker 1: This like branding sort of turns into a cycle because
- 31:06Speaker 1: she ends up, she ends up like being a breadwinner
- 31:10Speaker 1: for her family, which is against the beliefs she was professing,
- 31:13Speaker 1: but they kind of rationalize it because she's doing it
- 31:15Speaker 1: with her husband's supervision.
- 31:17Speaker 3: It's like, that's right.
- 31:19Speaker 2: There's a place where you can just do.
- 31:21Speaker 1: That stuff without having to rationalize it. And now she's turned,
- 31:26Speaker 1: of course, into an influencer who teaches people how to get.
- 31:29Speaker 2: Out of tradwives.
- 31:31Speaker 1: All of this is monetized in this bizarre way.
- 31:33Speaker 2: I wish you the best.
- 31:34Speaker 1: And like, look, I talk for a living. I understand.
- 31:38Speaker 1: But there is this culture where it's like, okay, well,
- 31:42Speaker 1: I've made myself this identity and I.
- 31:44Speaker 2: Can't deviate from it.
- 31:45Speaker 1: It's like, Maybe you'd have a little more wiggle room
- 31:48Speaker 1: if we hadn't all branded ourselves. Exactly. Exactly. You know
- 31:53Speaker 1: what I did like in this piece is that this
- 31:55Speaker 1: woman who has so much less influence than, say, Nicole
- 32:00Speaker 1: Hannah-Jones gives far more apologies. for having maybe misled people
- 32:08Speaker 1: than Nicole Hannah-Jones has in the past week about her
- 32:10Speaker 1: education policy. Such a good point. She says several times, like,
- 32:14Speaker 1: I really regret that I led other people to make
- 32:19Speaker 1: similar decisions. And I will say, she also seems like
- 32:22Speaker 1: she retained her faith. She seems like she's, you know,
- 32:25Speaker 1: not rejected everything about her old life. But yeah, I
- 32:29Speaker 1: did notice that she had some accountability.
- 32:32Speaker 3: I like that. Yeah, that's... That's definitely a better message than,
- 32:38Speaker 3: you know, I did it all wrong. Now follow me
- 32:40Speaker 3: into the right way.
- 32:41Speaker 2: Yes.
- 32:42Speaker 4: Yes.
- 32:42Speaker 2: She seems to be like trying to occupy that middle space.
- 32:46Speaker 1: On the other hand, we have the retirement of Justin Verlander,
- 32:49Speaker 1: who is a hugely famous pitcher for Detroit for years.
- 32:55Speaker 2: He is married to.
- 32:57Speaker 1: Kate Upton of early 2000s Sidney Sweeney-like fame. Right, right.
- 33:02Speaker 4: Yep.
- 33:02Speaker 3: People loved her. Yes.
- 33:05Speaker 2: She was the hotness. She remains very hot.
- 33:08Speaker 1: They have been married now for, I think, nine years.
- 33:11Speaker 1: They have two children. And Justin Verlander retired this weekend.
- 33:16Speaker 1: He spent his last day on the mound. And I
- 33:20Speaker 1: think we have a clip of it, but his retirement
- 33:22Speaker 1: was beautiful because it was full of his normie family
- 33:27Speaker 1: joining him his oldest daughter threw out the first pitch
- 33:30Speaker 1: a strike by the way and at the end this
- 33:34Speaker 1: is uh this is his leaving.
- 33:36Speaker 3: Of the mound.
- 33:38Speaker 5: He is not going to the mound he's going to
- 33:50Speaker 5: get justin verlander's daughter genevieve.
- 33:58Speaker 3: Why are you making me cry? I know. just beautiful
- 34:33Speaker 3: they're like all hugging but his daughter is like clutching
- 34:35Speaker 3: him it's really lovely.
- 34:38Speaker 1: The way he falls apart when he comes out like
- 34:41Speaker 1: he's okay until she gets there very nice anyway his
- 34:47Speaker 1: whole family eventually joins um It's so sweet.
- 34:51Speaker 2: And look, I know.
- 34:52Speaker 1: Justin Verlander and Kate Upton are extraordinarily hot and talented
- 34:56Speaker 1: and therefore not normie.
- 34:58Speaker 2: But this portrayal was like, it's all the things that matter.
- 35:01Speaker 2: Sports is beautiful. Family's beautiful.
- 35:04Speaker 1: Fatherhood is grand.
- 35:06Speaker 2: And he just seems to.
- 35:07Speaker 1: Be enjoying all of it in such a wonderful way,
