- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up, everyone, and welcome back to the program. We're
- 0:06Speaker 1: hearing from a neighbor of the four murdered college students
- 0:10Speaker 1: in Moscow that the front door was left wide open. Now, previously,
- 0:16Speaker 1: we had heard that there was no signs of a
- 0:19Speaker 1: forced entry, of a break-in, or anything like that. In fact,
- 0:24Speaker 1: we never even heard about the front door being wide open.
- 0:27Speaker 1: And if it was wide open... how the hell is
- 0:30Speaker 1: it that the whole entire house wasn't freezing cold? Those
- 0:34Speaker 1: girls on the first floor must have been freezing if
- 0:36Speaker 1: this front door was left wide open in the middle
- 0:39Speaker 1: of Moscow, Idaho. It's not exactly what you would call
- 0:43Speaker 1: warm there, right? And from reports during the time of
- 0:46Speaker 1: the killing, it was really cold that night, a lot
- 0:49Speaker 1: of whipping wind, and so you would think that the
- 0:51Speaker 1: whole house would be freezing cold if this door was
- 0:54Speaker 1: left wide open. But the police chief, Chief Fry is
- 0:59Speaker 1: saying that he can't confirm or deny that that door
- 1:02Speaker 1: was open, and he's saying that it was news to him.
- 1:06Speaker 1: So let's get to this DailyMail.com article, and let's see
- 1:10Speaker 1: what the hell's going on here. Headline, Moscow police chief
- 1:15Speaker 1: admits he did not know the front door to the
- 1:17Speaker 1: house where four University of Idaho students were murdered was
- 1:21Speaker 1: left open for hours. Meanwhile, the police chief says, I'm
- 1:27Speaker 1: not sure where that came from. Well, it came from
- 1:30Speaker 1: the neighbor, and my guess is the neighbor would have
- 1:32Speaker 1: told the police this already. So either Chief Fry is
- 1:36Speaker 1: playing coy, or he really didn't know that this neighbor
- 1:39Speaker 1: says anyway that this door was left wide open. Now again,
- 1:43Speaker 1: we have to take it with a grain of salt.
- 1:45Speaker 1: We don't know. We weren't there. But that's what this
- 1:48Speaker 1: neighbor is saying. This article was authored by Sean Cohen.
- 1:54Speaker 1: And Stephen Laporte. The police chief, where four University of
- 2:02Speaker 1: Idaho students were brutally stabbed to death, appeared unaware of
- 2:05Speaker 1: the report that the front door of the house was
- 2:08Speaker 1: allegedly wide open hours after the killings. And how could
- 2:12Speaker 1: that even be? I mean, you would think that the
- 2:14Speaker 1: whole place, like I said in the opening here, would
- 2:16Speaker 1: be absolutely freezing. But I guess not. Look, This is
- 2:21Speaker 1: one of those cases where you can just throw out
- 2:24Speaker 1: everything that you think is normal and all of the
- 2:26Speaker 1: things that usually make sense because we're in a place
- 2:30Speaker 1: now where nothing makes sense and it's like we're in
- 2:32Speaker 1: the upside down world or something. Speaking to DailyMail.com on
- 2:36Speaker 1: Thursday at the city's Christmas parade, police chief James Fry
- 2:40Speaker 1: said the report in which a neighbor noticed the door
- 2:43Speaker 1: wide open at 8.30 a.m. in the morning after was
- 2:47Speaker 1: news to him. So... The police chief has never heard
- 2:50Speaker 1: this before? Did nobody talk to this neighbor? Did this
- 2:54Speaker 1: neighbor just come up with this story afterwards? What's going
- 2:58Speaker 1: on here? What do you mean nobody knows about this?
- 3:00Speaker 1: Nobody heard about this? Fry could neither confirm or deny
- 3:05Speaker 1: whether the door was, in fact, left open. It was
- 3:08Speaker 1: previously stated the house had no visible signs of any break-in.
- 3:12Speaker 1: I'm not sure where that came from, to be quite honest, Fry,
- 3:15Speaker 1: chief since 2016, said. So it came from the neighbor.
- 3:19Speaker 1: That's where it came from. Now, the question is, is
- 3:23Speaker 1: it true or not true? Pretty simple confirm or deny here,
- 3:27Speaker 1: especially if the neighbor is coming out, giving interviews and
- 3:30Speaker 1: talking about it. Making pretend you don't know anything about
- 3:34Speaker 1: it one way or the other. I don't think that's
- 3:36Speaker 1: going to work. He told DailyMail.com he can neither confirm
- 3:41Speaker 1: nor deny whether the door was in fact left open.
- 3:44Speaker 1: I don't even know the answer to that one. If
- 3:46Speaker 1: I did, I would probably comment on that, but I
- 3:49Speaker 1: don't know the answer whether the door was open. So
- 3:52Speaker 1: who does know the answer? Anyone out there? Anyone in
- 3:54Speaker 1: the investigation? Going to provide some clarity here or no?
- 4:02Speaker 1: The victims, three women and one man, were found on
- 4:05Speaker 1: November 13th inside the student house the three women shared.
- 4:09Speaker 1: The three women have been named as Madison Mogan, Kaylee Gonsalves,
- 4:13Speaker 1: and Zanna Kernodal. The man, Ethan Chapin, was the boyfriend
- 4:17Speaker 1: of Kernodle, one of the housemates. A neighbor said that
- 4:21Speaker 1: the front door, which gives access to the floor where
- 4:24Speaker 1: two of the victim's roommates were staying, was open at 8.30 a.m.
- 4:27Speaker 1: on November 13th. Police have said that they believe the
- 4:31Speaker 1: murders happened between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. on that morning.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Now we also heard, from another neighbor that they were
- 4:40Speaker 1: awake and going through their nighttime routine at around the
- 4:44Speaker 1: time of these murders, and they say they heard a scream.
- 4:47Speaker 1: So now we have a neighbor who says they heard
- 4:49Speaker 1: a scream. The door is left wide open to the
- 4:52Speaker 1: floor where the roommates were sleeping who didn't get killed.
- 4:56Speaker 1: And in fact, if this door was open and this
- 4:58Speaker 1: turns out to be true, then that means the killer
- 5:01Speaker 1: did access the floor where these girls were sleeping. So
- 5:05Speaker 1: did they have their door locked like we talked about
- 5:07Speaker 1: earlier so the killer couldn't get access to their room?
- 5:11Speaker 1: This is just a wild story, and it gets wilder
- 5:14Speaker 1: by the article. A spokesman for the state told Fox
- 5:19Speaker 1: News on Thursday that type of information is part of
- 5:22Speaker 1: the investigation and not released. The Moscow Police Department said
- 5:26Speaker 1: earlier it's probing the movements of Chapin and Kernodle, who
- 5:30Speaker 1: visited the frat house where Ethan was a member hours
- 5:33Speaker 1: before the murders. Now, that's interesting. The spokesperson says that
- 5:37Speaker 1: that type of information is part of the investigation and
- 5:40Speaker 1: not released. But you have Chief Fry just saying a
- 5:43Speaker 1: second ago that if he had that information, he'd tell you.
- 5:47Speaker 1: So again, the miscommunication is coming from the actual investigation itself,
- 5:54Speaker 1: as well as many other quarters. But they can't even
- 5:56Speaker 1: get their story straight half the time when they're trying
- 5:59Speaker 1: to disseminate information to the public or giving interviews. Police
- 6:05Speaker 1: believe Ethan and Zanna visited the Sigma Chi house from
- 6:09Speaker 1: about 9 p.m. on November 12th until around 1.45 a.m.
- 6:13Speaker 1: when they returned to Zanna's off-campus home, just a brief
- 6:16Speaker 1: walk away where the murders took place. So we talked
- 6:19Speaker 1: about the time gap, and now it's looking like that
- 6:22Speaker 1: time gap really isn't that big of a gap as
- 6:24Speaker 1: we first suspected. Looks like they hung out at the
- 6:27Speaker 1: Sigma Chi house the whole entire time. So if you're
- 6:31Speaker 1: going to be looking for information and what happened... the
- 6:34Speaker 1: best place to start would be at the Sigma Chi house.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Anyone have videos? Anyone have any live streams they were doing?
- 6:41Speaker 1: All of that has to occur. The president of Sigma
- 6:45Speaker 1: Chi confirmed that he had known Zana as a friend
- 6:48Speaker 1: and that Ethan was a member of the frat. He
- 6:50Speaker 1: said there were no cameras in the Sigma Chi house
- 6:52Speaker 1: that night that might aid the investigation. So they're saying
- 6:56Speaker 1: they don't have surveillance cameras at the frat house. And
- 7:00Speaker 1: I don't doubt that for a minute. The last thing
- 7:02Speaker 1: you want to do is have a bunch of cameras
- 7:04Speaker 1: filming a bunch of 18, 19, 20-year-old dudes shotgunning beers
- 7:09Speaker 1: and acting the fool. So I doubt there'd be cameras
- 7:13Speaker 1: at all as far as surveillance. But as far as
- 7:16Speaker 1: kids live streaming, taking video, you know that's happening. All
- 7:20Speaker 1: of these kids are, you know, live streaming their whole
- 7:22Speaker 1: lives these days. So there has to be video footage.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Someone has to have some footage of what went on
- 7:29Speaker 1: in that that house that night at that party afterwards, whatever.
- 7:33Speaker 1: So that's what the police are really looking for. And
- 7:36Speaker 1: my guess is some of the people that were there
- 7:38Speaker 1: were probably getting down, doing some drugs, some blow or something,
- 7:42Speaker 1: maybe whatever, partying. And they don't want to get in
- 7:45Speaker 1: trouble for that. So they haven't come forward. And you
- 7:48Speaker 1: see that quite a bit with younger people. They don't
- 7:50Speaker 1: want to have their name dragged into something like this.
- 7:53Speaker 1: So they don't come forward. Meanwhile, they might have a
- 7:55Speaker 1: little bit of crucial information that helps the investigation move forward.
- 8:00Speaker 1: So it's up to the investigators to let these kids know, look,
- 8:03Speaker 1: you're not going to get in trouble if you come forward,
- 8:06Speaker 1: you know, if you were doing some drugs or partying,
- 8:07Speaker 1: whatever it is. Ethan and Zanna, who were dating, were
- 8:12Speaker 1: stabbed to death along with their roommates, Kaylee Gonsalves and
- 8:16Speaker 1: Madison Mogan, in the home they shared, likely while they
- 8:19Speaker 1: were sleeping. Police still have no suspects and no murder weapon.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Earlier appeals to the public had focused on Kaylee and
- 8:28Speaker 1: Madison's activities on the night of the murders, which involved
- 8:31Speaker 1: stops at a sports bar and a food truck. That
- 8:35Speaker 1: actually seems to be one of the larger areas that
- 8:37Speaker 1: we don't have a lot of information in. Idaho State
- 8:40Speaker 1: Police Communication Director Aaron Snell told Good Morning America of
- 8:44Speaker 1: Ethan and Zanna's movements on November 12th. So being able
- 8:47Speaker 1: to locate what they did that night to maybe who
- 8:50Speaker 1: they contacted, maybe any routes they took home, That would
- 8:53Speaker 1: be important to the investigation, he added, so now we
- 8:56Speaker 1: know that they didn't go anywhere. They were at the
- 8:58Speaker 1: Sigma Chi house for the duration of this time, according
- 9:03Speaker 1: to all reports. Meanwhile, tensions grew further between investigators and
- 9:09Speaker 1: the families of the victims who have spoken out in
- 9:11Speaker 1: frustration about the failure to identify a suspect. Caylee's father, Stephen,
- 9:16Speaker 1: previously told News Nation's Brian Enten, that police had told
- 9:20Speaker 1: him her injuries were worse than the other victims, but
- 9:23Speaker 1: didn't go into detail. Moscow police contradicted that remark in
- 9:27Speaker 1: their new statement saying, with the active criminal investigation, law
- 9:31Speaker 1: enforcement has not released additional facts to the family or
- 9:35Speaker 1: the public. So here's where the dueling narratives come in, right? Mr.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Gonsalves is saying one thing, and Chief Fry and the
- 9:42Speaker 1: investigators are saying something completely different. There have been statements
- 9:48Speaker 1: and speculation about this case, victims injuries, cause of death,
- 9:52Speaker 1: evidence collection and processing, and investigative techniques, the statement added. However,
- 9:57Speaker 1: we firmly believe speculation and unvetted information is a disservice
- 10:02Speaker 1: to the victims their family and our community it continued
- 10:06Speaker 1: echoing a refrain from prior statements as the small town
- 10:09Speaker 1: department leading the investigation has come under increasing criticism the
- 10:15Speaker 1: moscow police department is committed to providing information whenever possible
- 10:19Speaker 1: but not at the expense of compromising the investigation and prosecution,
- 10:24Speaker 1: the department said. And I think most people understand that.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Of course, there's always going to be a vocal few
- 10:31Speaker 1: who are out there yelling and screaming about how they
- 10:34Speaker 1: should have all of the information that the investigation has.
- 10:37Speaker 1: But really, we're not privy to any of that. And
- 10:41Speaker 1: as long as they're making their moves behind the scenes
- 10:44Speaker 1: to bring somebody to justice, I don't care if we
- 10:46Speaker 1: know ever what they were doing behind the scenes. See,
- 10:50Speaker 1: here's point A and here's point B. I want you
- 10:53Speaker 1: to get from point A to point B, and I'm
- 10:55Speaker 1: not really too concerned about all of the nonsense in between.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Just get me to the destination and get an arrest here.
- 11:02Speaker 1: I don't need to have my curiosity satiated. What I
- 11:07Speaker 1: want is somebody to be arrested and for these families
- 11:10Speaker 1: to get some justice, for the community to be able
- 11:13Speaker 1: to go back to at least some relative normalcy. and
- 11:18Speaker 1: for the person or persons responsible to have to pay
- 11:21Speaker 1: the ultimate price. Police also said they looked into the
- 11:26Speaker 1: theory that Kaylee had a stalker, as they continued to
- 11:29Speaker 1: search for answers three weeks after four University of Idaho
- 11:32Speaker 1: students were murdered at their off-campus house on November 13th.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Police said that in mid-October, two males appeared to follow
- 11:40Speaker 1: Kaylee inside the local Moscow business and then followed her
- 11:44Speaker 1: out to her car, but made no contact. After speaking
- 11:47Speaker 1: with the two males, police determined it to be an
- 11:50Speaker 1: isolated incident and said there was no evidence to suggest
- 11:54Speaker 1: they were involved in the murders. Again, these were two
- 11:57Speaker 1: dudes out trolling for some ladies, trying to, you know,
- 12:00Speaker 1: pick up on girls. They see two good-looking girls come in,
- 12:04Speaker 1: one good-looking girl come in. Of course these dudes are
- 12:06Speaker 1: going to take their shot. Now, does that make them
- 12:09Speaker 1: stalkers or something like that? Certainly not in my opinion,
- 12:12Speaker 1: at least not from what we have seen so far.
- 12:15Speaker 1: If there's other information, great. But as far as what
- 12:17Speaker 1: we've seen here, the evidence, if you want to call
- 12:20Speaker 1: it that, well, certainly doesn't look like these are stalkers
- 12:23Speaker 1: to me. The male turned away from her and it
- 12:27Speaker 1: did not appear he made contact with her, police said.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Police did not say what business the incident occurred at.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Police contacted both males and learned that the two were
- 12:36Speaker 1: attempting to meet women at the business, which was corroborated
- 12:40Speaker 1: through additional investigation. Police also revealed on Monday that There
- 12:44Speaker 1: was no evidence found on Gonsalves' dog, Murphy, who was
- 12:47Speaker 1: found at the scene. It has not yet been determined
- 12:50Speaker 1: what room the dog was in when the murders took place.
- 12:54Speaker 1: So there was a lot of talk about that at first.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Is the dog going to get processed? Does the dog
- 12:58Speaker 1: have evidence on him? All of that stuff. And those
- 13:00Speaker 1: are all valid questions and all valid concerns because the
- 13:04Speaker 1: dog could have had evidence on him. But they did
- 13:06Speaker 1: process the dog and now the dog is back with
- 13:10Speaker 1: the ex-boyfriend. During the search of the home, a dog
- 13:15Speaker 1: was found in a room where the crimes had not
- 13:17Speaker 1: been committed, according to the release. Officers did not find
- 13:21Speaker 1: any evidence on the dog, and there was no indication
- 13:23Speaker 1: that the animal had entered the crime scene. The dog
- 13:26Speaker 1: was taken to the animal services and released to a
- 13:29Speaker 1: responsible person. Three weeks after the grisly murders, few answers
- 13:34Speaker 1: have come out, and authorities have yet to name a
- 13:36Speaker 1: suspect or even a person of interest in the case. Now, again,
- 13:41Speaker 1: we're not that deep into it yet, But when you
- 13:44Speaker 1: look at a case like this, usually if it's somebody
- 13:47Speaker 1: close to the person who has been killed, we already
- 13:50Speaker 1: have a bit of a sniff as to who it
- 13:52Speaker 1: might be, what the motive is. But here we have nothing. Now,
- 13:58Speaker 1: when I say we, I mean the public, what the
- 14:00Speaker 1: investigators have. Well, that's a whole different conversation. But so far,
- 14:04Speaker 1: what we have seen is literally nothing. Kaylee and Madison
- 14:10Speaker 1: were sleeping on the third floor, and Zanna and Ethan
- 14:13Speaker 1: were on the second floor. Cops said the killer entered
- 14:16Speaker 1: the house through a sliding glass door on the second floor,
- 14:19Speaker 1: which was level with the backyard. Now, I haven't heard
- 14:21Speaker 1: the cops say that. Again, I want to reiterate, I
- 14:24Speaker 1: haven't heard the official report of the cops saying he
- 14:27Speaker 1: came in or she came in or they came in
- 14:30Speaker 1: through the sliding glass door. And now we're hearing from
- 14:33Speaker 1: the neighbor about the front door being open. I have
- 14:36Speaker 1: to leave this one as unsolved still. We don't know
- 14:39Speaker 1: what happened here yet, where they came in, where they left,
- 14:42Speaker 1: point of entry, point of exit. All of that is unconfirmed.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Two other roommates were in the house but were unharmed
- 14:53Speaker 1: and unaware the attack occurred. They were sleeping on the
- 14:56Speaker 1: first floor. Detectives have sifted through more than 2,645 email tips, 2,770
- 14:59Speaker 1: phone tips, and 1,084 digital media submissions, according to the
- 15:08Speaker 1: most recent update. We believe someone has information that will
- 15:12Speaker 1: add context to the picture investigators are creating of what
- 15:16Speaker 1: occurred that evening, Moscow police said in a statement on Monday.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Our focus is the investigation, not the activities. Your information,
- 15:24Speaker 1: whether you believe it is significant or not, might be
- 15:27Speaker 1: one of the puzzle pieces that helps solve these murders.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Last week, Idaho State Police spokesman Aaron Snell told DailyMail.com
- 15:35Speaker 1: that it's possible all four victims could have been intended
- 15:38Speaker 1: targets of the gruesome November 13th stabbings. He confirmed investigators
- 15:44Speaker 1: have gathered enough evidence to suggest the killings were targeted,
- 15:48Speaker 1: but admitted they are still no closer to identifying the murderer.
- 15:52Speaker 1: And I don't think they are any closer. I don't
- 15:54Speaker 1: think that the people who are saying, oh, they have
- 15:57Speaker 1: somebody in their sights behind the scenes, they have somebody
- 15:59Speaker 1: that they're zeroing in on, I don't believe that. I
- 16:03Speaker 1: think that the only thing they have so far is
- 16:05Speaker 1: this white Hyundai Elantra, and they got that from a tip,
- 16:08Speaker 1: by the way. The update on Monday stated, we have
- 16:14Speaker 1: not changed our belief that the murders were a targeted attack. However,
- 16:18Speaker 1: investigators have not concluded if the target was the residents
- 16:22Speaker 1: or its occupants. Autopsies determined the four students were stabbed
- 16:26Speaker 1: to death, likely with a fixed blade knife. And investigators
- 16:29Speaker 1: checked with local stores to see if any sold military-style
- 16:33Speaker 1: knives recently. And that search for those knives or that knife,
- 16:38Speaker 1: that didn't bear any fruit. There were no stores that
- 16:40Speaker 1: sold one recently, nothing local. So the police really have
- 16:43Speaker 1: nothing to go on as far as that goes. And
- 16:46Speaker 1: when you're talking about a knife like that, you could
- 16:48Speaker 1: buy them online, surplus store, million places you could get that.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Buy it on Craigslist, you know, so it's not like
- 16:55Speaker 1: it's a rare weapon. So the police are looking for
- 16:58Speaker 1: this knife, obviously, because it can connect the killer. So
- 17:01Speaker 1: they want to have the murder weapon for sure. But
- 17:04Speaker 1: as of now, nothing, no murder weapon, no suspect. All
- 17:08Speaker 1: we have to go on as the public as far
- 17:10Speaker 1: as a lead is that white Hyundai Elantra. And there
- 17:14Speaker 1: you have it, folks. That's where we're at as of
- 17:17Speaker 1: right now, as of this morning. As more information becomes available,
- 17:21Speaker 1: I'll add it to the catalog and we'll stay on
- 17:23Speaker 1: top of it the best we can. If you'd like
