- 0:02Welcome to Impact Ready, a show dedicated to helping you elevate
- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:21Hey team, welcome to the show. Thanks for being here.
- 0:24I just got back from Oakland, CA.
- 0:28I go there quarterly to meet up with my mastermind group and
- 0:31connect with people who are like minded and all working on their
- 0:35businesses around speaking and coaching and consulting.
- 0:39And then we get to be part of a 2 day event where there's
- 0:42speakers from all over the country who are coming in and
- 0:45practicing their message and really curating and cultivating
- 0:48their their brand and their business around public speaking.
- 0:53And it's so awesome because you get to be around people who are
- 0:57all very purpose driven in sharing what is important to
- 1:00them. And you get to see all kinds of
- 1:02messages. You get to see people coming
- 1:04with all different perspectives, different stories, different
- 1:07experiences that have shaped their lives.
- 1:10And everybody's doing something a little bit different, which is
- 1:13really cool. And I love every part of that.
- 1:16But it did have me thinking about the fact that, man, there
- 1:18is so much that you can do in the world.
- 1:20There are so many directions you can go.
- 1:22There's so many paths that you can take, and it can be very
- 1:25easy to get distracted from your own path.
- 1:29It can be very easy to get off track just because you have so
- 1:33many options. And also you have so many things
- 1:36pulling at your energy and your mind power.
- 1:39There's so much distraction in the world.
- 1:42On the one hand, it's beautiful to have a lot of options.
- 1:45It's amazing that we have access to so many tools and so many
- 1:49ideas. On the other hand, sometimes the
- 1:52stuff can serve as a deterrent from staying on our own path and
- 1:57really finishing what we start. And so in today's episode, what
- 2:01I want to talk about is this idea about putting our blinders
- 2:05on so that we can shut out the noise, shut out the excess
- 2:10distraction, and stay on course with what's important to us.
- 2:15This is also very applicable to what we consume in terms of
- 2:20information because what we consume is really what our input
- 2:23is comprised of it. It's all the influences that are
- 2:26coming in from external sources and all of that stuff shapes the
- 2:31story that we tell, the story that we tell about our lives.
- 2:36One of my coaches describes this process as putting the blinders
- 2:39on, like I said, and it's in reference to how they put
- 2:44blinders on the sides of horses faces so that they don't get
- 2:47spooked or distracted by what's going on around them.
- 2:50The same thing is true of us. Sometimes we have to be a little
- 2:55bit more selective about what we allow in so that we can be in
- 2:59choice around our story and so we can be intentional about our
- 3:03actions. When I say story being choice
- 3:07around our story, what I'm talking about is all the things
- 3:11that make up how we describe our life.
- 3:14It's the language we use. I call it the language of our
- 3:16life. How do we talk about things?
- 3:18How do we talk about our marriage and our kids and our
- 3:21job and our opportunities and, you know, our life in general?
- 3:26It's also the ideas we consume, this input.
- 3:31It's the ideas we consume. It's the social media we use,
- 3:33the books we read, the music we listen to.
- 3:36It's the conversations that we have.
- 3:38It's also how we talk to ourselves internally.
- 3:41There's always a little internal story going on in our minds,
- 3:46mostly unconscious for a lot of people.
- 3:49And so all of this creates the story that we tell about our
- 3:54circumstances and our life. And I think a lot of people miss
- 3:58this idea. They miss the fact that one,
- 4:02we're telling a story all the time and two, we get to be in
- 4:07choice about the story we tell. It's so simple.
- 4:09It's it's like the simplest idea.
- 4:13But when I'm explaining this to coaching clients, when it clicks
- 4:16for them and they get it, they look at me and they're like, oh,
- 4:18my God, this is actually really easy.
- 4:20Are you telling me it's really just about the story we tell?
- 4:23And I'm like, yeah, it is over and over again.
- 4:27This is the sentiment that clients come up with to me
- 4:29because they're like, I used to think that personal development
- 4:31was so complicated that it was so hard that you had to put in
- 4:34all this effort. And really what you're telling
- 4:36me is it all boils down to the story that we choose to tell.
- 4:39And a lot of times it is primarily about that because we
- 4:43are always telling a story. We are always speaking out into
- 4:47the world some sort of version of what we think is true about
- 4:51the world. We are always broadcasting a
- 4:54frequency through our energy, through our body language,
- 4:58through our impact. And I always ask people, what is
- 5:01the message that you want to be sending?
- 5:03We have to be careful about what we allow in.
- 5:06At times there are seasons of our life where we just have to
- 5:10put the blinders on so that we can stay focused.
- 5:14Not only so that we can stay focused in our goals and doing
- 5:18the work that we want to do, but so we don't get inundated with
- 5:22information and swayed by all of these arguments or opinions of
- 5:27other people externally out in the world.
- 5:29People who have no idea what our life is like, what it looks like
- 5:33to be in our own body and really have their own agendas for what
- 5:38they would like to happen with other people.
- 5:41We have to be intentional about where we put our focus and our
- 5:44energy so that we don't get bogged down.
- 5:48You know, I was watching some of the speakers get up at the event
- 5:50that I was at and I was noticing that each one kind of went into
- 5:56their zone prior to getting on stage.
- 5:57I mean, you have to, you have to block out the noise and the
- 6:00distractions so that you can be focused and dialed in up there
- 6:04for what you're about to do so that you can show up
- 6:06authentically and, and be relaxed.
- 6:09And I just was watching them and noticing that is one way to put
- 6:12the blinders on is to get really focused and dialed in to shut
- 6:17out the noise and the distraction.
- 6:20And while that was a physical manifestation of this idea, the
- 6:23same thing can apply mentally and emotionally as well.
- 6:27There's something interesting that I've been noticing in my
- 6:29own life lately, and it's the story that people tell about
- 6:34cancer treatment. Most of you, you know that I'm
- 6:37going through treatment right now for breast cancer and I have
- 6:4112 weekly infusions of chemotherapy.
- 6:44At this point, I'm over halfway. I'm feeling pretty good.
- 6:47I'm feeling strong, managing side effects, really being able
- 6:51to work full weeks and do what I need to do in my life.
- 6:54And I'm so grateful for that because I recognize that that's
- 6:57not the case for every patient who's going through
- 6:59chemotherapy. Every chemo regimen is
- 7:02different. Every cancer is different, and
- 7:04so it's not going to look the same for every person.
- 7:07I'm very grateful for where I'm able to be right now.
- 7:11But something interesting is the way that people talk to me about
- 7:16cancer treatment, the way they talk to me about chemotherapy.
- 7:20And everybody is coming with good intention.
- 7:23Most everybody is coming with the idea of I want to be
- 7:25supportive of you. I want to empathize with you.
- 7:28I want you to know that I see you.
- 7:31But they say things like, Oh my God, this is so hard for you.
- 7:35Oh my God, you must be exhausted.
- 7:37I don't know how you're doing all of this.
- 7:39You should be resting more. This must be crushing you.
- 7:42You must be feeling really frustrated.
- 7:44You must be really pissed off about what's happening to you.
- 7:48And I'm just noticing it. I'm interested in this process
- 7:52because as you know, I, I think there's a lot of power in
- 7:55language and I'm always observing how people use
- 7:58language. None of these people are coming
- 8:00with I'll intent, but I have to put my blinders on to a lot of
- 8:05this stuff because the input, the information that's coming
- 8:09into my brain, the language that's coming in, the stories
- 8:12that are coming in, the conversations that I have with
- 8:14people, all of that influences my own story.
- 8:17It does, it does. It can't be helped.
- 8:20It's just the way that we are as humans.
- 8:22The information that we take in can influence the story that we
- 8:26tell, our perspective and, you know, the things that we expect
- 8:30to happen. So I've had to learn to be
- 8:32really careful in the last couple months about putting my
- 8:35blinders on and focusing on the story that I want to tell.
- 8:38And the story that I want to tell is that I'm capable, I am
- 8:42strong, I can navigate this stuff.
- 8:46I'm telling a story of ease. I've mentioned that in past
- 8:50podcasts as my coach challenged me to tell a story of ease.
- 8:54How can I invite ease into my life even during a time that's
- 8:57really hard? And so I've been practicing
- 8:59that, but I have to be careful about the input around me.
- 9:03And that's not something that I maybe would have noticed before.
- 9:06So that's just kind of an interesting little thing.
- 9:09Leanne and I have started joking about some of the stuff that
- 9:12we're going through. My wife.
- 9:13And you know, some people might think it's a little crass or
- 9:17inappropriate to be having this kind of dark humor on stuff.
- 9:20But for us, it brings a lightness to the situation.
- 9:22It alleviates what could feel very heavy.
- 9:26And it's our way of controlling the story, putting our blinders
- 9:30on and making sure that we are in choice around the perspective
- 9:34that we have. And it's my way of staying in
- 9:37power. It's my way of staying in my
- 9:40strength, especially mentally, is feeling mentally strong.
- 9:44And when I think about these questions, how do I stay in my
- 9:47power? How do I stay on track with my
- 9:49goals, with my pursuits? How do I find consistency in how
- 9:55I show up every day? The answer for me is it's not to
- 9:59give attention to every single thing in the world.
- 10:01Sometimes you have to be more selective and intentional about
- 10:05what you let in and give your attention and focus to.
- 10:08There's probably something like this happening for you in your
- 10:10life right now. Physically, you might be
- 10:13training for something or working through an injury or
- 10:16healing from something. You have to put blinders on so
- 10:19that you can do the work. I have a patient right now who's
- 10:22recovering from a massive reconstructive surgery on their
- 10:24spine, and he has to be so focused on what he is doing
- 10:28right now in PT with his doctors.
- 10:31I really like the mental, emotional work of healing from
- 10:34that type of a procedure. He has to be so focused on his
- 10:38healing and he has to put his blinders on.
- 10:40You might be working through something mental right now,
- 10:43trying to heal a relationship or rise above some hard stuff, work
- 10:47through some trauma. Maybe you're in therapy or
- 10:49coaching, and you have to stay focused on your work.
- 10:53You have to put the blinders on. You cannot take in all of the
- 10:57information. You just don't always have the
- 10:59bandwidth for that, especially when you're doing something that
- 11:03takes energy and effort. And then of course,
- 11:05energetically, this totally applies.
- 11:08There's a lot of heavy stuff in the world right now.
- 11:10We can acknowledge that. It's really difficult to be
- 11:14consuming all of the news and the information that is
- 11:17available right now, especially when you consider the types of
- 11:21videos that are online. They're really graphic.
- 11:25They are violent. There's information about trials
- 11:29around the country and wars. It's really challenging to
- 11:34consume all of that and keep your energy and your frequency
- 11:37high. It just is.
- 11:39You can feel it. You can feel a difference in
- 11:41your vibration, how you feel when you've been taking that
- 11:44kind of information in even for just 15 minutes.
- 11:48I mean, it's like a fire hose, right?
- 11:49It's too much. And so many people do it for
- 11:52hours a day. This is not about putting your
- 11:56head in the sand and being ignorant to what's going on in
- 11:59the world. That's not what I'm talking
- 12:00about. What I'm talking about is the
- 12:02fact that we cannot take this all on energetically.
- 12:07As humans. We're not need for this.
- 12:09It's just too much. And so we have to be selective
- 12:13and put our blinders on at some point.
- 12:15I have a really great friend. She is a brilliant coach.
- 12:19She's very empathic person, so skilled in self development, and
- 12:24even she had to put her blinders on to the news cycle that was
- 12:28happening. I think it was last year when
- 12:31there was so much conflict going on in the world, the news cycle
- 12:35took her down to a degree that she could not function in her
- 12:38day. It was so intense, she couldn't
- 12:40work, she couldn't connect with people.
- 12:43She had to take like 3 weeks off to recover from the fact that
- 12:46every single day she was taking in so much information about all
- 12:49of this conflict and war happening in the world.
- 12:52It's too much for us as humans. It's a lot even for the people
- 12:55who have a lot of skills to be able to manage it.
- 12:58Sometimes you have to put the blinders on.
- 13:01And if you don't, we risk getting drained, we risk getting
- 13:05burned out, losing our energy, and then we don't have the
- 13:08ability to be effective or impactful in our life.
- 13:11And I know that's not what we want.
- 13:14So this is just another element to be able to harness your
- 13:17effect and impact in the world is knowing when to put the
- 13:22blinders on and when to take them off.
- 13:25Knowing when to be more protective of your energy so
- 13:28that you can be really intentional and in choice with
- 13:32your story. There's always going to be days
- 13:34where you're going to have more capacity to take in all the
- 13:37information. It's just you have to know
- 13:40yourself. You have to know how to protect
- 13:42your energy and know when it's appropriate for you to put the
- 13:46blinders on and shut out the noise and distraction so you can
- 13:49stay on course for yourself, for your family, and for the people
- 13:53in your sphere. So, so important.
- 13:56So I hope this is helpful today. I hope that you can do just a
- 14:00quick audit of your own life and make a decision about where you
- 14:04might have to put the blinders on so that you can stay
- 14:06impactful and effective in your own day-to-day.
- 14:09I appreciate you being here. I'm so glad that we get to have
- 14:12these conversations. Thank you for listening and as
