- 1:06gone. Okay?
- 1:07Well, okay, actually, to be fair, it was going to be a 2022
- 1:11movie, no matter what, because the other option was, nope.
- 1:14So that's all on us. We just, I don't know.
- 1:16It's the 2022 type of months. So, we're talking about
- 1:19Barbarian today. Yeah, we're living in the past.
- 1:22Yeah, actually, we can't let go. Do you have any announcements
- 1:26before we do any of this? I don't think so other than Than
- 1:30our bonus. Episode 4, December.
- 1:34Patrons was really fun. Yeah, good time.
- 1:37We got it uploaded just in the nick of time for some times in
- 1:41the year. Yeah on Friday.
- 1:44So like the 30th yeah was a game Jesse Quinn the name of this one
- 1:50called follow or not follow. So it was basically I was cousin
- 1:55Jesse on if these titles two movies that I I was giving her
- 2:01are real or not and she did pretty good.
- 2:04So it's fun time. There's like, basically two
- 2:06games in there because we also turn the fake ones into another
- 2:09game. After we finish the first one.

- 3:26reviews for movies if you want to.
- 3:28So it's a lot of fun. Fun.
- 3:30Yeah, good time. I think personally, I like it a
- 3:32lot. I like interacting with you guys
- 3:34at school and I do actually have one additional announcement and
- 3:37it's that this weekend is going to be our to be or not to be
- 3:39episode. We kind of shifted to the
- 3:41beginning of the month, last month, due to a busy schedule.
- 3:44And it's the same this month. We just have a lot going on and
- 3:48probably honestly are going to have a lot more scheduled.
- 3:50So it, you know, what we're doing it this weekend, when we
- 3:54know we can, and we carved out time to do our, your Patron,
- 3:57episode, the same weekend that we did that.
- 4:00Covering Tara fire to. Yeah, it's been a bit since
- 4:03we're done with. So it feels right if you're done
- 4:05with that. I've got our poll results.
- 4:07Okay. So we talked about who lose into
- 4:11the darks new year. New you last week?
- 4:14Yes. And he is really productive.
- 4:18Yeah. And the year focusing on
- 4:21releasing the toxicity and nice Mantra.
- 4:26I get. Yeah.
- 4:27So we just wanted to To know based off of Jesse's response to
- 4:33it in the movie, champagne glass or champagne in a margarita
- 4:38glass, is it acceptable? No.
- 4:41Well on Instagram, sixty-two percent of people said, yes 38%
- 4:47said, no, y'all look, there is room for difference of opinions,
- 4:51but we're not friends anymore. Okay, well, 62% of you anyway
- 4:56well, say goodbye to 100% of the Twitter population, because 100%
- 4:59of the Able to said, yes, it's acceptable on their up your
- 5:02standards. You are cut off.
- 5:07You cut off from Twitter. It's just me now.
- 5:09Yeah, it's up, guys. Okay, that's it.
- 5:12That's their polis. Okay.
- 5:13All right, let's talk about Barbarian.
- 5:15I've been excited to talk about this movie for a long time now.
- 5:18Yes, it was easily one of our favorites of 2022.
- 5:21Yeah, my personal top movie from last year.
- 5:25All right, so Barbarian came out, September 9th. 22
- 5:30obviously, we watched it on HBO Max because surprisingly, this
- 5:34hasn't had a physical release yet which is weird because this
- 5:38movie did well and people are asking for one and nothing's
- 5:41happened yet. So what the fuck guys don't
- 5:44know. Is that Cracker has a comedy
- 5:46background? Maybe he's just trolling all of
- 5:49us. That's a bad troll.
- 5:53All right, so it's available as of today, January 2nd, 2023 on
- 5:58HBO. Stealing place unless you
- 6:01subscribe to HBO through other services, like Hulu Amazon,
- 6:04whatever. So it's Jesse would say Amazon.
- 6:08Premium, really premium. I think it's worth acknowledging
- 6:11those because not everybody has HBO Max but sometimes people
- 6:14have the add-on and if they don't realize that they can get
- 6:17it through that way. Like yeah, that's our whole
- 6:19point. I don't think we're it's
- 6:20available. I'm just, you know, usually
- 6:22people subscribe to those that way, they can have like a
- 6:25central Hub. So I think that they would know
- 6:27that there's subscribe to those, but maybe they don't know.
- 6:29Like holy shit I got HBO. Maybe they didn't hear a central
- 6:32Hub and you wish people would subscribe to you.
- 6:33Thank you. You can rent this on Amazon
- 6:37Google or Voodoo you know, wherever you want to watch it.
- 6:40So there are options so you can't buy it anywhere right now
- 6:44other than digitally, but you can stream it.
- 6:47So yeah, there you can watch it. I recommend you do.
- 6:51This is written and directed by Zack, kreger.
- 6:54Jesse loves to point out that he is one of the members of The
- 6:59Whitest Kids U. No, I was fucking obsessed with
- 7:02that show. Back in high school.
- 7:05Yes. Yeah.
- 7:05That was kind of, whenever I wouldn't say I was obsessed.
- 7:09I did watch it from time to time, but and I was like,
- 7:12looking at his directing history to.
- 7:15He's directed a few things, not a whole lot, but He's listed as
- 7:19a director for like 95% of the episodes on there.
- 7:23So he's been directing for some time just just like a couple
- 7:27like a handful of features one of them.
- 7:29Was with the other guy, the Trevor, I don't remember his
- 7:33almost caught him more House. Trevor Moore house from bloody
- 7:37murder, but I know that sighs name.
- 7:40Yeah, so he's been at it so music by Anna druidic and we
- 7:46have a whole special effects makeup team.
- 7:48These are all people from Bulgaria which is where this
- 7:51movie was shot. Okay, so they have interesting
- 7:53names. I'm going to do my best to say
- 7:55them, we have alexandrina durman did Skia okay, Wyatt Mill.
- 8:03Nikolov James was yalla Sofia, recover and Alice.
- 8:09She'll pull over. Okay, so that's our team.
- 8:14They did a good job. I agree.
- 8:16Yeah, I wanted to like try and because it's a small enough
- 8:19group I wanted to give everybody Credit Credit where credit's
- 8:22due. All right, cast for this
- 8:25Georgiana, Campbell place to test, Bill Skarsgård plays
- 8:28Keith. Justin, Long blaze AJ.
- 8:32Matthew, Patrick Davis, plays the mother and Richard, break
- 8:36plays Frank, or I've seen people call him dad, I guess, I don't
- 8:40know. It's kind of weird to call
- 8:42Richard break dad. He's always like he's always
- 8:45playing like a slimy guy that you probably don't want to have
- 8:48as your dad. Yeah.
- 8:49He's definitely Typecast in a way that he always Rises to the
- 8:54occasion. Yeah.
- 8:55Like I'm like kind of like Bill Skarsgard.
- 8:57I've seen them in a lot of creep roles, which And that's what
- 9:00this is here. Justin Long plays, a lot of
- 9:02shitty people rolls. Absolutely have here, gets his
- 9:06eyes gouged out of the end. Yeah.
- 9:08So you know he always has like he always gets his comeuppance,
- 9:13you know. So it's nice for the most part.
- 9:15We did watch accepted over the weekend also because it was also
- 9:18honored to be on Max. Yeah.
- 9:20We were just looking for comedy. Yeah.
- 9:21HBO was like Justin long. Do you want to watch tusks to?
- 9:24Like, we don't know what you're up to.
- 9:26Here you go. My favorite thing was after we
- 9:28watched Ian like HBO is, like, now, watched us kind of like, oh
- 9:33shit. That's a good recommendation.
- 9:35That's on theme for the night but no we watched Glass Onion
- 9:39instead. Yeah.
- 9:41Okay. Jesse budget or bug Ted.
- 9:44I think this one was budget. Yeah.
- 9:46Yeah. No.
- 9:48This is a bug Ted. Oh, really?
- 9:49It is 4.5 million good for them? Yeah, they did pretty well with
- 9:53what they had so it opened with 10.5 million opening weekend, It
- 9:59up, grossing, 45 million, good for them.
- 10:02I Am IMDb score of seven point one.
- 10:05Okay. Yeah, okay.
- 10:06This was a sleeper hit. Yeah.
- 10:09And it came Outta nowhere. Nobody was expecting it.
- 10:11Yeah, we watch the trailers for it and it was like one of those,
- 10:14I don't know. Maybe when it comes on streaming
- 10:16will watch it. Don't really care that much.
- 10:18And then after opening weekend, people are like, holy shit and
- 10:21we didn't have anything else going on.
- 10:23So we just decided like, okay, cool.
- 10:24Let's go check it out and it was intense.
- 10:27It's important 5 is not a bad opening.
- 10:29But also I think you can see like where the 45 million came
- 10:32from after that. Because like weird word finally
- 10:35got out there. Yeah.
- 10:35And it kind of ended up having some legs.
- 10:39I think people. I mean like you like I saw the
- 10:42trailer. I was like yeah, yeah, whatever.
- 10:44But people see those scarce card and going based off of it
- 10:49they're like oh he's like plan. Another creep.
- 10:52I'm in for it because he's kind of creepy in the trailer too so
- 10:57don't know. He's Typecast.
- 10:58As that kind of guy, he's a good man.
- 10:59The poor people in. Yeah, absolutely, for this type
- 11:03of thing. All right, three movies that
- 11:06have pulled for this, by the way.
- 11:09I thought it was interesting. I was trying to say this during
- 11:12our patreon episode but I got distracted.
- 11:15I was listening to old episodes because like, as I was telling
- 11:18you, I was listening to old ones to like, come up with names for
- 11:21some of the fake titles. We used to only do two movies at
- 11:25the time. When we were doing this.
- 11:26Not three like somewhere along the way.
- 11:28We just started doing three. And nobody questioned it.
- 11:30And that's just kind of the thing now.
- 11:32Okay, so it's funny but, you know, I like it.
- 11:34I like having three. It's like a good number.
- 11:36I think it just makes sense for comparison purposes.
- 11:39I think so too. You're a lot more optimistic and
- 11:42committed to doing this throughout the entire month?
- 11:44Then I am. Yeah, okay, yeah.
- 11:46So we are doing, like, on this month, three 2022, movies, and
- 11:53that means we have to pick three other movie.
- 11:57So a total of nine movies to compare them to throughout this.
- 11:59Already covered some 2022, movies in 2022.
- 12:03Yeah, I'm not optimistic that we're going to be able to keep
- 12:06it fresh and interesting and I was like well maybe we don't
- 12:08have to do it all month and Travis like now we're going to
- 12:10do it on that so I guess we'll see what happens by the end of
- 12:13January. I want to do it that way because
- 12:16I think it's a testament to how strong the year was for horror
- 12:19movies and that's not wrong. And I already have three picked
- 12:24up for Halloween ends, so we just have to find.
- 12:27And honestly, I was looking there.
- 12:28I've probably already got the other One's figured out for Tara
- 12:30fire to, I mean, depending on who's doing the coverage for
- 12:34that one, I can make some suggestions to, but no, it's
- 12:38definitely doable. And I've got a theme here too.
- 12:41So it's kind of its kind of good.
- 12:44Okay, I'm liking where we're going with this.
- 12:45Okay, so first one smile. Okay, that was another like Dark
- 12:51Horse movie for, exactly, that's why I picked it.
- 12:54This is a sleeper hit. Nobody expected this movie.
- 12:57I don't think a lot of people had faith in this movie, because
- 12:59I saw the Discussion about a leading up.
- 13:01Stupid is a concept. It sounds stupid.
- 13:03And then it also is a first-time director.
- 13:08Took a two-hour movie. Yeah.
- 13:11It's just a lot and act back. It's funny.
- 13:13I want to talk about this one on the show at some point, but it's
- 13:17funny, because I was reading a Reddit thread before this came
- 13:19out and like one of the directors friends went on to
- 13:22dread it and he's like, hey guys, this guy's got great
- 13:24ideas, but sometimes he lacks with his ability to capture his
- 13:28vision. So give him a shot.
- 13:29Shot. But you know, maybe adjust your
- 13:31expectations and then, you know, it's kind of shitty but at the
- 13:34same time, like everybody kind of was like, holy shit that's
- 13:37actually pretty good. That was my response.
- 13:39Whenever I watched it, I didn't expect to really be super into
- 13:42it. But yeah.
- 13:44I liked it a lot, but it came out, same month, September 22nd,
- 13:49okay? And had a budget of 17 million.
- 13:52So I had one word with and this thing made 216 million dollars
- 13:58shit. This thing was a huge.
- 13:59Fucking success. It has a 6.6 on IMDb.
- 14:04Okay, next movie. So none of these are all the
- 14:07same thing but they are all related to Barbarian.
- 14:10Okay, this one is, nope, because it's a comedian, directing it.
- 14:13Okay, okay, so that one obviously, everybody.
- 14:16Yeah, we also know from sketch. Kanye primarily that one right
- 14:23there, you know, Jordan Peele. He's obviously got a history in
- 14:27horror now. More than that Gregor.
- 14:29Is that clear? Always been like a Werner to the
- 14:32like. Yeah.
- 14:32And during Key and Peele days. Yeah.
- 14:34You could tell ya the but I mean, he may like he got out of
- 14:37the gate with get out and yeah, it's like that's fucking history
- 14:41from there on. He's, he's kind of synonymous
- 14:44with the genre now and nope is one of those movies to that we
- 14:47do eventually when I cover. Yeah.
- 14:49Not and it's another one that I really enjoyed to.
- 14:51So yeah, I'd be down to, but came out July 22nd, budget of 68
- 14:58million, big fucking Yeah, surprisingly did not make as
- 15:01much money as smile, really, I know, right.
- 15:04You wouldn't think that nope, would have won the box office
- 15:07for horror movies either that or Halloween ins, but no, I'd only
- 15:11made 171 million. Wow, only made 171, that's still
- 15:15fucking amazing but has an IMDb of 6.9, okay, that one I could
- 15:20see like it's weird. I really enjoyed it.
- 15:24Yeah, yeah. Um I I liked it a lot.
- 15:28I think that's actually one of my favorites.
- 15:29Orton pill movies. Yeah, I definitely liked it more
- 15:32than us us as kind of us is okay, but it's not one of his
- 15:38best. It's like a sophomore slump type
- 15:40movie, in my opinion, felt like two ideas, crammed together in
- 15:44the same movie, in a way that I wasn't, I don't know.
- 15:48I can send my brain off and enjoy it but at the same time
- 15:51it's like it. I love about 85% of us.
- 15:56Yeah, I think he just had the misfortune of having In the
- 15:59follow-up get out, which is kind of a tough one to follow.
- 16:02Get h a phenomenal out the gate. Yeah you so but you know, nope
- 16:08is good. I liked it.
- 16:10All right. Final one this one is related to
- 16:13the matically, it's men. Okay which we obviously haven't
- 16:17seen yet, we have not I have not heard good things about it.
- 16:21I've heard it's a pretty bad movie.
- 16:23I've heard mixed things about it okay?
- 16:25I've not heard a single good thing but you know I'm not
- 16:28really looking too much. About it either.
- 16:30So, I don't know, I could be good.
- 16:32I'd like to give it a shot. Yeah, it's one of those.
- 16:34It's on my list to watch at some point.
- 16:36Yeah. Just haven't gotten there.
- 16:38But I mean, obviously, it's kind of the same themes of like, you
- 16:42know, men or like red flags and stuff like that.
- 16:46Like yeah, trust your gut. Yeah, no, I remember seeing the
- 16:50trait, like we walked in, at the end of the trailer for it, at
- 16:54one point before it came out. And so, we just walk in and it's
- 16:57like dramatic music tunnel. And then His men and I was like,
- 17:01oh yeah, that's scary. Yeah, men, yeah.
- 17:04Okay I'm concept is a horror movie done so that came out May
- 17:1020th had okay. I don't have a budget for it so
- 17:15they didn't release it. I think that's it.
- 17:17Seemed bucket bucket that's like in between budget and Bug.
- 17:26Ted bug it. Okay, I think that's you know,
- 17:33when you go to Panera and they're like, what do you want
- 17:35as your side item? And I always pick the again,
- 17:40thinking more of like Tim and Eric's, plug it plug it.
- 17:45I think it's a theme with a 24 movies because I almost put
- 17:49another one on there. Okay.
- 17:51Yeah. I changed my mind last minute.
- 17:52That was also a 24 and they didn't have a bunch of listed.
- 17:55Also trying to think of what an 24 maybe came out of this.
- 17:58The only tell you what it would have been.
- 17:59Yeah. And I was bodies, bodies bodies.
- 18:02We're going to be talking about that at some point to.
- 18:04Yeah. And which I think that that's
- 18:06another Contender for movies to compare with this month,
- 18:11probably terrified the same. So yeah, no budget listed but it
- 18:16ended up making 11.2 million. Okay, 6.1 on IMDb so it's not
- 18:22good like Bad. IMDB ranking.
- 18:24All of these actually are pretty good.
- 18:25That's the lowest one of them all.
- 18:27Highest one barbarian up in the 7s.
- 18:30But all these other in sixes. Okay, pretty good.
- 18:33Not too bad. Like I said, strong gear for
- 18:35horror movies. So alright, only have one tag
- 18:39line, unfortunately. Okay, come for a night.
- 18:43Stay forever. That sounds like if you had to
- 18:46write a one-sentence description of the error when sentence
- 18:50synopsis of the song Hotel, California by the Eagles.
- 18:54Yeah, right. Um, I really don't think Great
- 19:00personally. No, it's not even on the main
- 19:02poster either. It's like this third poster that
- 19:06I found buried deep on IMDb, but like, the main posters just like
- 19:11from the people who brought you it and it's like, okay, okay, I
- 19:15guess that explains Bill Skarsgard a little bit more.
- 19:17They're just really trying to bank on these names because, you
- 19:20know, obviously it was fucking huge.
- 19:22Yeah. Okay.
- 19:25So on to the fun facts, this movie obviously, is Fired by
- 19:32well, maybe not obviously, but the whole theme is about
- 19:35trusting, you to go with red flags and he got that idea.
- 19:38After he read the book, The Gift of fear, by Gavin de Becker,
- 19:42which is basically a book about advising people on how to
- 19:46protect themselves against threats, and there's a whole
- 19:49section dedicated to women encouraging them to listen to
- 19:52that inner alarm, that goes off with interactions with men,
- 19:56which spoiler alert that goes off a lot higher for women.
- 19:59Then it does for men and that's what she said.
- 20:01Very evident in this movie. Yeah.
- 20:03So what he did after he did that, he let that marinate for a
- 20:07while and he kind of just thought about the difference
- 20:09about how men and women interact with each other in public.
- 20:14Or, you know, like in an instance like, it was like a
- 20:17story in one of the interviews from New York Times, which is
- 20:20where I got most, this information right here, he was
- 20:23talking about, he was on a hike and he was crossing paths with a
- 20:26woman and he's like, what do I do too?
- 20:29Make myself not as threatening because I know that she's
- 20:32probably thinking, you know, like the inner Flags or like the
- 20:35inner alarms are going off and it's natural, but you know, it's
- 20:39like, oh no, he he's trying to recognize that it is a thing
- 20:43that women have to worry about men, not so much, he's not
- 20:46worried about her. As at their, he's like, how do I
- 20:49not appear to be a threat? My, so I got my hair done this
- 20:52weekend and my stylist. And I were talking about this
- 20:56about how men will do stuff that in their, It is probably just
- 21:00friendly and they don't realize that it comes across as
- 21:03incredibly invasive and boundary-pushing.
- 21:06Oh yeah, because and we'll talk about this more.
- 21:10As we get into the movie, socially women are trained to
- 21:14respond in a certain way out of self-preservation.
- 21:19So that becomes a whole thing to.
- 21:21You can't. If so if you post something to
- 21:23your Instagram stories and some dude hops up in the DM and he
- 21:28was like Like just a bunch of like heart eyes emoji is and
- 21:32like looking great. Probably innocent maybe not
- 21:38feels creepy it does I would never do that.
- 21:41That's such a good like no offense to people who do that
- 21:44and have good intentions. But like for my perspective, I
- 21:48feel like doing that is not exactly sending a good message
- 21:52in it like it happened so frequently and it's just like,
- 21:56you know, if you're running because I mean she's a stylist,
- 21:59she's got The hair account. So if you're doing something
- 22:03public facing trying to have business, it's like what do you
- 22:07do to be cordial and grow your customer base while also keeping
- 22:13yourself protected? Yeah.
- 22:15And that's part of the reason because sometimes people will
- 22:18laugh a little bit that way your accounts, but I get that layer
- 22:21of protection with the two of us being evil laugh about that.
- 22:26Not like, you know, there's the whole joke about like a couple
- 22:28sharing accounts. I know is a little bit different
- 22:30for us, but there are plenty of podcasts out.
- 22:32There were like, Two Hosts have separate accounts and then
- 22:36they've got a joint podcast account, whereas we have chosen
- 22:40just to focus on the joint podcast account for a myriad of
- 22:43reasons. But that on my end being a big
- 22:46one. Yeah.
- 22:47Um, I don't know what it is for me.
- 22:48I feel I just feel more comfortable doing that instead
- 22:52of like for my own account. I don't know why.
- 22:55It's just like, I feel like there's that like barrier and
- 22:58I'm like, there's like Shelter. I don't even know because like
- 23:02it's so obvious. It's me.
- 23:03I'm not like hiding myself. Yeah.
- 23:07Okay, so he read that. Let it sit for a little bit.
- 23:11So he began writing a scene and the goal for the scene was to
- 23:15basically write as many red flags that are men, wouldn't
- 23:18think twice about, but every woman would boom.
- 23:21Boom, boom boom. So this ended up turning out to
- 23:25be the opening sequence that we get.
- 23:27Yes, Travis and I were playing. Being our own little drinking
- 23:30game, which is drink every time. There's a red flag.
- 23:34And like, basically, we were just chug, chug chug.
- 23:38This is during the first 30 minutes and then, Justin Long
- 23:41comes on screen. And any time he opens his mouth.
- 23:45Yeah. He's like a walking red.
- 23:46Yeah, it's the entire time. And so, it's like the opening
- 23:49sequence. Like, the whole point is like
- 23:51red flag, red flag. So like he just was like, okay,
- 23:54I'm going to write a scene about a double booked Airbnb and just
- 23:59kind of A way to go from there. It's interesting.
- 24:01He he kind of wrote to a certain point to where he got frustrated
- 24:06and then he like decided to end it with a giant naked woman
- 24:11coming out of nowhere and smashing his head.
- 24:13He's like, holy shit. That surprised me.
- 24:14This is interesting. I think I might have a movie
- 24:17here, so he decided to go along with and just build off of that.
- 24:22He kind of played by this rule that people try to surprise
- 24:26himself that way if he knows that he's surprising himself.
- 24:29If he should be surprising the audience to, okay, which I think
- 24:32is effective. But yeah, here, because this
- 24:35movie goes against a lot of your expectations, it really does.
- 24:39And I think that's part of what was so successful about it for
- 24:42me. Yeah, personally myself too,
- 24:45because even like, with the trailer and this is a movie that
- 24:48I still recommend, you don't watch the trailer.
- 24:50However, the trailer did a great job of not ruining everything.
- 24:55It's kind of like watching the trailer for a cabin in the
- 24:56woods. Yeah, it kind of is in really
- 24:59your baby. We getting a trailer for the
- 25:01first half of the movie or the first segment.
- 25:03Yeah, are stacked. Yeah, it's like the first 30
- 25:05minutes or so it doesn't even reveal anything.
- 25:08It just kind of like it continues to plant in your mind
- 25:12that Bill Skarsgard is a creep and you should be kind of wary
- 25:15of him, and it doesn't have like the writing is really great for
- 25:18this, but also casting till Skarsgård, I think is perfect
- 25:21because he's coming off of being Penny wise.
- 25:24And that, yeah, I also know that this movie was not as widely
- 25:27seen, but he's a total. Little greasy creep ball in
- 25:31assassination, Nation as well. So those are the first two
- 25:35things I think of with Bill screws guard.
- 25:38Yeah. He he tends to play The Creep
- 25:40isn't. He's in another movie that we
- 25:42watched to. I can't fucking remember what it
- 25:43is. Wasn't he in tragedy girls?
- 25:47To me have this when I was thinking tragedy girls but I'm
- 25:49like, was it him or was it petite Huey how it is petite
- 25:53Hugh? Yeah, because like I'm like, if
- 25:55they feel they feel interchangeable and that role
- 25:57for whatever reason and Petit, jury does not like, give off
- 26:02that Vibe at all. Huey is like the good and
- 26:06business cards cards than bad. Like, I think he might, they're
- 26:10opposite sides of the coin. He might be in that movie too,
- 26:14but Josh Hutcherson the movie, so it's not Josh.
- 26:16Hutcherson because Josh, Hutcherson is kind of kind of
- 26:18the creep in that. Are you looking it up right now?
- 26:20I am absolutely, looking it up. Okay.
- 26:22Well, I'm just gonna look of those Skarsgard and go from
- 26:26there, instead of trying to go through tragedy girls.
- 26:29Need to find a role where he is a likable dude.
- 26:33Yeah so you because here's the thing with this movie is that
- 26:36I'm still not 100%. He wouldn't have turned out to
- 26:38like attempt to murder test. I think I think we good I he is
- 26:42actually I take that back. He's a likable dude, in this
- 26:45movie and I think that he is kind of sat kreger because he's
- 26:50kind of in this movie how Zack Ryder was talking about that
- 26:54instance of him, hiking and coming across that woman.
- 26:56He's like I'm trying my best to I would say you're probably
- 27:00sketched out by me but here I'm trying to make it good for you.
- 27:04Okay he was not in tragedy girls and I also like forget that I
- 27:08don't think he's actually like his family is not American
- 27:14directly. I don't think right?
- 27:16No, I don't think so because he's got a lot of movies in
- 27:19here. They're like pecan Greener.
- 27:22I don't think he really made live it.
- 27:25These fogger Vic a name for himself over here until So it
- 27:30he's got like I mean the Skarsgård just like a whole,
- 27:33he's a Swedish. Yeah, I know he's an Epi baby.
- 27:36Yeah, there's actually I'm not anti nepo baby.
- 27:39You just have to like acknowledge that you do have
- 27:40certain advantages. I mean, it is what it is.
- 27:43Yeah. It's like it's a thing.
- 27:46Bill is the Von Gunther Skarsgard.
- 27:49Oh yeah. That's his full name.
- 27:50All right, so okay. So after he wrote that first
- 27:55half he wanted to design the second half of the movie.
- 27:59Say complete contrast. So he wanted instead of like
- 28:02somebody acknowledging, the red flags and kind of like, working
- 28:08based off of those, he wanted to write a predator that has no
- 28:13awareness for any of the red flags.
- 28:16Here's the thing, Keith, it's the person that the News tells
- 28:21you, you should be afraid of. Yeah.
- 28:23But you may or may not run into them.
- 28:26AJ is the person that absolutely fucking exist and you are going
- 28:31to run into several of them per day.
- 28:35People like news. Just a misunderstanding.
- 28:37Yeah, yeah, definitely. He like I said, he's the walking
- 28:40red flag. So he basically wanted to just
- 28:43have like the two halves there and then he wanted them to
- 28:46converge at one point or towards the end of the movie.
- 28:49Originally, AJ was supposed to or he wanted Zac Efron
- 28:54originally to play AJ. The original character was
- 28:58written as a him Bo. He said which is how he
- 29:02originally imagined it it's just picturing that was like yeah
- 29:05that brings a totally different energy like I think Justin long
- 29:08did great but I love the concept of Zac Efron being in there.
- 29:11Yeah. What was that guy front decline.
- 29:13He did not want to be Associated.
- 29:14I think the only way you can get Zac Efron to sign onto your
- 29:17movie is you have to promise him that there's a physical
- 29:20transformation like he has to like be able to do something to
- 29:23his body and being a him by was just Zac Efron already.
- 29:27So yeah. So after that he got Justin
- 29:31along for the part and decided to retool the character based
- 29:34off of Justin, Long's he described him warm disarming and
- 29:39Charming personality. Which I think that's fair.
- 29:42I think, even though, Justin along plays an asshole
- 29:46character, in a lot of horror movies, he does have that
- 29:48certain charm to him. He's got try, wouldn't call him
- 29:52warm, but he does like have a certain energy that like small
- 29:57doses If You Don't See. like, if you don't bring up, Any topics
- 30:03that he's going to immediately out himself as a douchebag.
- 30:06I think he's the lovable asshole in the friend group.
- 30:09Yeah, maybe, yeah. And I really, I think that's
- 30:12what it is. Okay, moving on, let's talk
- 30:15about mother for a bit. Okay, what I just, I'm ready to
- 30:21hear your fun facts. Okay.
- 30:23So the guy that played mother essentially had to be naked for
- 30:26the entire thing. He only has only wearing a
- 30:27thong. He didn't really, they didn't
- 30:31have Of time to work with him on the special effects or like the
- 30:35Practical makeup effects for him because he interviewed for the
- 30:39rollover Zoom due to the pandemic.
- 30:42Also, it's filmed in Bulgaria so he was unable to be in Bulgaria
- 30:46with the special effects team. So yeah, they didn't really,
- 30:49they didn't really have anything to go based off.
- 30:51They had to figure out as he arrived for filming, the
- 30:55original look, apparently, according to him, was more
- 30:59cartoonish. So they had to To it and make it
- 31:03more believable, I guess if you can make it believable, but he
- 31:07said that they had like these giant teeth like big breasts and
- 31:12big ass and it just kind of looked weird proportion wise but
- 31:16they ended up sculpting it down to getting it to like a nice
- 31:18little creepy good-looking no, whoop to it.
- 31:23Craigers set a soft roll for himself for this.
- 31:26He didn't want okay, he wanted to use practical effects as much
- 31:30as possible. He he didn't allow himself to
- 31:33use anything that John Carpenter wouldn't be able to use for the
- 31:36thing. So if there was any technology
- 31:39that wasn't available back, then he wouldn't be able to use it
- 31:42for this. The only major CGI in the movie
- 31:46is when it flashbacks the 1980s with Richard break and it's the
- 31:50grass because apparently, they couldn't actually get a good
- 31:54grass to grow for the scene there.
- 31:56So they ended up just CG it. Fully looked like AstroTurf.
- 32:01Yeah, it did. So, yeah, that's what I assumed
- 32:04it was. It's like fucking neon.
- 32:08Neon, is that the right word? Oh no.
- 32:10It's bright as hell. Either way.
- 32:12It's fucking green. But yeah.
- 32:15Okay, that's it for my phone fax.
- 32:17Okay, Jesse. Wait on me.
- 32:19Good bad. Ugly absurd.
- 32:21Oh, I love this movie. I'm Anna.
- 32:27Honestly, I think I'm gonna, I'm gonna go out start the year hot.
- 32:33I'm going to say this is a 10 again, for me, because it's the
- 32:37first movie in a long time. The in the theater was making me
- 32:41squirm in my seat. I was physically uncomfortable.
- 32:45I had that little voice in the back of my head.
- 32:47Being like, no, no, no, no, do not absolute danger, do not
- 32:53pass, go like it, it really hits that.
- 32:56That really well. Yeah, so I think just in terms
- 33:00of tension and I don't even mind the, the tonal shifts.
- 33:05I think it came at a very necessary time and I think that
- 33:11by his way of writing it and allowing him to be surprised by
- 33:15the script was good because it didn't feel like, okay well I
- 33:19have to keep the story here. What do I do now?
- 33:22Gave himself and the audience. A little bit of a break away
- 33:25from what's happening in the bay.
- 33:26Basement and we're going to, okay, how do we get back here?
- 33:29How do we introduce this new character?
- 33:30How do we continue the conversation that we were having
- 33:34before in a way? That feels different contexts.
- 33:40Like yeah, same conversation but like a different perspective
- 33:43different scenario. Yeah, yeah.
- 33:46So I think that I think that it's all just really effective
- 33:48for me. Okay, the bad, Honestly, like I
- 33:54don't I don't have a lot of bad for it.
- 33:58Okay. I mean maybe I'll maybe I'll
- 34:01spot something out as we're talking about it but I think
- 34:04it's just it's a really solidly done movie.
- 34:07The Ugly. I know there's a lot of fatigue
- 34:12in the horror Community right now about like, oh, we're going
- 34:15to make this deformed naked woman.
- 34:19Yeah, the monster and there's like an added layer of ich.
- 34:24When you cast a man to play that, I appreciate that.
- 34:30They worked on the Prosthetics to not make it seem so
- 34:33cartoonish. But I don't know, I didn't
- 34:38realize that like It feels in a way like, why does it have to be
- 34:45a man playing this deformed woman?
- 34:47And there's like an element potentially like transphobia
- 34:50there that like yeah. You know what I mean?
- 34:54And I can't articulate it. Super, super well.
- 34:57Again, I'm going to refer to the wives Colangelo because they've
- 34:59kind of talked about this and they talked about it a lot on
- 35:03their black Christmas episode, and they said they did
- 35:06appreciate this portrayal. More than say, a S in the 2006,
- 35:12black Christmas there because they talked about Barbarian know
- 35:16they talked about 1974 black Christmas but they brought up
- 35:20the whole Agnes thing which was a big part of what they didn't
- 35:22like about 2006. Oh yeah.
- 35:25And they referred to Barbarian and they said it's a similar
- 35:28thing but it's a little bit different because there's a lot
- 35:30more heavy Prosthetics and makeup involved here.
- 35:33Yeah, I don't I don't know. I mean, I think the intention
- 35:36was more to make like a monster but see, that's the problem.
- 35:41Yeah, we're going to put a man. We all just woman to be a
- 35:45monster. So we're going to put a man and
- 35:47woman's breasts that you see what I mean is that kind of like
- 35:50why was this the decision? You know what I mean?
- 35:54Like, yeah, even if it wasn't from a place of transphobia, it
- 35:59has like certain elements of that to it.
- 36:02Okay, so I don't know. And again I'm not going to say
- 36:05that I have like any place of authority to speak on that.
- 36:10Definitely go. Listen to trans folks opinions
- 36:14on that. A lot of people have said, and
- 36:18written about it. A lot more eloquently than I
- 36:20just said right now. Wonder if people it's just food
- 36:23for thought, I haven't really looked at up, but I wonder if
- 36:26there is a discussion about that out there.
- 36:28Yeah, I'm sure I'm sure there is, like I said, it was just a
- 36:31little bit of a blurb on that episode of the sun's at prom,
- 36:34but it did kind of get me thinking about it a little bit
- 36:37more critically. Okay, in a way that I haven't in
- 36:39the past, Past. So and that might be just part
- 36:42of, you know, recency bias for me having that thought put in
- 36:46there. But I do think it's important to
- 36:49to examine, okay? So and then the Absurd just can
- 36:54Justin long. So I get his character like he
- 36:57is so reprehensible and I hate that I have moments where like I
- 37:03laugh really hard at him also. Yeah, he's funny.
- 37:07So yeah, he's got funny moments but he's just such a shit Oh
- 37:10yeah. So you can be a funny shit bag.
- 37:13You can still laugh at them and recognize the shittiness of his
- 37:16character, you know layers? Yeah.
- 37:20Yeah. I think this is a really good
- 37:21movie. I recommend it to everybody have
- 37:24a good time with it. It's intense.
- 37:27I was really grateful that we had to take notes because you
- 37:29were like, I wish we could turn the lights out.
- 37:32If we had a lamp, I would have. Well, I'm glad we don't have it.
- 37:36I know, right? I'm right there with you, man.
- 37:40Tim Hudson for me. Sweet.
- 37:42This was hands down. My favorite horror movie of
- 37:462022. There was like real no
- 37:49competition for me. Like, I mean, it's just like my
- 37:52favorite movie of 2022. It's, I don't know.
- 37:56I there's something about it. That felt refreshing.
- 37:59It just felt different, but at the same time, it felt like I
- 38:05could watch this shit. Like, you could have told me
- 38:08this shit came from like the 80s or 70s.
- 38:11And I would have believed that, you know, I kind of had that
- 38:13vibe to it like a classic movie classic horror movie.
- 38:17Yeah. It's just, it's tense.
- 38:19It's fun. It's funny.
- 38:23It's got everything to it and there's not a dull moment in
- 38:27this at all, like you were talking about before I love how
- 38:30it changes into a completely different movie halfway through.
- 38:33It's not something that you expect, and I think that it
- 38:36plays off of that change really well.
- 38:38So, Bad. I also do think that there's a
- 38:42single bad thing about this movie, like, I honestly can't
- 38:45think of a thing about this movie that I dislike.
- 38:48I think the only thing that I would say that I wanted more of
- 38:53from this movie is I wish we could have seen, like, just like
- 38:57a preview of like, what the fuck that tape was that he played
- 39:01down in the basement. I like that.
- 39:03We got very few hints about what was going on with Frey.
- 39:08You get just enough to You're staying how terrible he is.
- 39:11Yeah I mean I think we can all pretty much make some good
- 39:15assumptions about what it is on there and I don't like I'm not
- 39:19trying to be like I want to see some fucked up shit I'm just
- 39:22like oh no like I'm watching a horror movie.
- 39:25I'm already pretty fucking creeped out if you take it just
- 39:28a little bit further I might be like extra grossed out and
- 39:32creeped out because like that type of stuff, right.
- 39:35There is just creepy to me. So, yeah, I guess that would be
- 39:39the only Thing. But I think it's more powerful
- 39:42that we don't see it, but we do have AJ, who is morally gyrate
- 39:50like him and he's like, what the fuck is wrong with?
- 39:51Yeah, I know it definitely is a good thing.
- 39:54Yeah. Like I said, I'll give it's not
- 39:56really a bad thing, like it's just something that I'm trying
- 39:59to think to myself, like I wouldn't have hated it but at
- 40:02the same time I respect the decision because like honestly,
- 40:05it probably does work better in his favor but I'm just curious.
- 40:10Ugly. I mean, like the natural
- 40:12ugliness in this movie, you get the fucking piece of shit, like,
- 40:16A.J in this. You get the fucking cops that
- 40:20don't take tests seriously. You just get like the general
- 40:24ugliness of society. It's ugly to look at it's a
- 40:29reality though and I don't know. It sucks.
- 40:32Yeah, and the Absurd man. I don't know, man.
- 40:38I like that. Fucking Just how this movie
- 40:42changes into a completely different movie.
- 40:45Whenever Bill scarce guards, had gets bashed in and the tunnel
- 40:50and I'm like, oh we're going there.
- 40:52I thought I was gonna like whenever we were first watching
- 40:54it, I was like, oh, this is just going to be like some kind of
- 40:56tints Thriller type thing. I don't know what's going to
- 40:58happen and holy shit. There's like somebody there just
- 41:01bashing his head against the wall and oh my God we're cutting
- 41:03the black and now it's Justin Long driving a car.
- 41:06Yeah. What the fuck is this?
- 41:08Oh no, it's amazing. Oh, I love it.
- 41:11Yeah, so that's my piece on it. Alright, so starting average of
- 41:1610. All right.
- 41:17Starting off strong. Like you said?
- 41:18Yeah. Hey, so we start off, it's
- 41:22nighttime, it's storming. There's a house.
- 41:26Test pulls up. She's reading her email but says
- 41:29the lock box, where the key is? The code is 833 one.
- 41:34She says eight, eight three one. I like that little moment.
- 41:39It doesn't end up being like really significant at all later
- 41:43on, but I would just like that little very real moment of those
- 41:46would be easy numbers to Interchange when you've been
- 41:48driving in the dark and you're stressed.
- 41:49Yeah, and tired. So is that what happens here is
- 41:52the, she like, enter the code wrong on the keypad.
- 41:54And that's what it is. She does it a couple times and
- 41:56she has to pull up her email and see that she got the code wrong,
- 41:59got you okay? But when she does finally get it
- 42:02open, oh, there's no key in the box so she tries to call the
- 42:07property manager doesn't get it. An answer, she goes back to her
- 42:11car and that's when she sees a light on in the window in the
- 42:14house and decides to go ring the doorbell.
- 42:17She booked this house through Airbnb.
- 42:20Whereas Keith the man, who's answering the door saying that
- 42:23he just woke up from her ringing, the doorbell red flag,
- 42:27she walked up there because she saw the light turn on in the
- 42:29house. The are ringing.
- 42:31The doorbell wasn't what woke him up?
- 42:34He had flipped a light on it. One point I think it's
- 42:36reasonable to hear the commotion going on outside.
- 42:39Like, if something was going on outside our door here, like I
- 42:43think I would hear it. Did you hear my own?
- 42:49I mean, I don't think it's like out of the realm of
- 42:52possibilities, like hear that. And then, like, what the fuck is
- 42:55that? But yeah, he booked through
- 42:57something called HomeAway. Never heard of this.
- 42:59Hmm. I haven't either.
- 43:01Doesn't mean it doesn't exist, but I've never heard of it.
- 43:03Yeah. So, yeah, they're double-booked.
- 43:05She shows him her confirmation and then he invites her in just
- 43:10to like stay because obviously it's in the middle of the night
- 43:13in Detroit and kind of sketchy. So, you know, maybe come inside
- 43:18for a minute. Yeah, and I pointed this out
- 43:22when we were watching it, but he's like, he seems almost too
- 43:27calm about the whole thing. He was a man that That's weird.
- 43:32Yeah, no, I'm totally booked here and he blames.
- 43:37It is like having just been woken up, but I don't know.
- 43:40It just again, it's one of those things that if I was in this
- 43:43situation I'd be like here a little bit too.
- 43:46Calm about this. Did you plan this?
- 43:47Yeah. Yeah.
- 43:48I mean it definitely is a red flag but I was pointing out to
- 43:51you. I think it would also be a red
- 43:53flag on his part to because like, you have somebody knocking
- 43:56on your door, in the middle of the night being like, hey, I am
- 43:59supposed to be here too. All the more reason for him to
- 44:02have a more emotional response. Yeah, definitely.
- 44:05Like the same thing with test. She's ignoring her red flags
- 44:07here by going inside, he's kind of ignoring his, that should be
- 44:11there and letting a stranger come in.
- 44:13So she comes in. She wants to see his
- 44:17confirmation just to make sure wish he seems a little bit
- 44:20offended by but yeah it kind of fucking make sense.
- 44:24She just showed you hers it like why wouldn't you have that
- 44:28exchange of information? So she goes to the bathroom.
- 44:31Room locks the door. She is checking his toiletry bag
- 44:34because is a murderer going to think ahead to like set out a
- 44:38toiletry bag and put their fucking electric toothbrush on
- 44:43the floor. It's got a charge and it looked
- 44:46like I had a short cord. I don't know it, I hate it.
- 44:49I think, if you are going to do that, charge it in the kitchen
- 44:52charging in the living room, the bedroom where ever, it doesn't
- 44:54have to stay in the bathroom. It's very distressing to me
- 44:57every time I see it as strange decision.
- 45:00So, Test decides that she's like.
- 45:03Okay cool. I'm just I'm going to go out in
- 45:04my car and I'm going to look for another place to stay and he's
- 45:08like I don't know if you got a good look outside but this isn't
- 45:10the best neighborhood, you probably shouldn't be out there
- 45:12alone in your car at night. Just, you know, looking here,
- 45:15here's the Wi-Fi information and she calls one or two hotels and
- 45:19like, oh, we're completely booked for tonight and think,
- 45:22oh, yeah, that's right. There's a medical convention in
- 45:24town, so it's pretty fucked off. Hold on, was he call it?
- 45:31I had in my notes Here, whatever.
- 45:33But the whole time like she's doing this, he's like, do you
- 45:35want T? I'm gonna make myself to you.
- 45:36Do you want tea? There's also this bottle of wine
- 45:38here and she just says, no. Thank you repeatedly and he
- 45:41makes it for her anyway. And she doesn't end up drinking
- 45:44it because it's catchy. Yeah, red flags and then he's
- 45:49like, look, just stay here. You can take the bedroom, which
- 45:54I did appreciate like his awareness here to be like she
- 45:57can be behind a locked door. Yeah, you know, there's Like
- 46:01that. There's on the one hand, there's
- 46:03the element of being like kind of Trapped in the house and that
- 46:06scenario but I would feel a lot more protected with a locked
- 46:10door between me and a stranger versus I'm on a couch exposed.
- 46:14Absolutely, I wouldn't want that.
- 46:17And she's like, no offense. I have a thing about dirty
- 46:20sheets, so they start some laundry.
- 46:22And, you know what bedding laundry is the fucking worst.
- 46:26Oh, hell yeah. This is, this is quite a time
- 46:28commitment on their part. Yeah, what she says.
- 46:30He's like, well, Oh, it's probably going to be a few
- 46:32hours. So like he's waiting for her at
- 46:34the table and she's coming back. She's went to the bathroom to
- 46:36like, you know, go know get like changed in the comfortable
- 46:40clothes and stuff like that. And she comes back into the
- 46:42kitchen, he sitting at the table with the wine and the wine
- 46:45glasses he's like, hey I noticed that you didn't drink the tea,
- 46:49which I totally understand. So, I wanted to get this one and
- 46:53actually pour it in front of you and open it in front of you.
- 46:56That way, you can know that there's nothing sketchy going on
- 46:59with this, and he's kind of like, The way he's talking
- 47:02about, he's kind of like you can.
- 47:03He's jittery like nervous. Kind of who hard?
- 47:06It's, I think. Here's the thing I get where he
- 47:09is coming from a place of like, I understand why I shouldn't
- 47:12drink the tea and I don't want her to feel like she can't drink
- 47:14anything around me. I want to offer this to her.
- 47:16I'm going to be awake anyway, like I get where he's coming
- 47:19from a place with good intentions.
- 47:20However, he is also putting her in a position where it's like
- 47:25she doesn't want the why and she's got a job interview in the
- 47:27morning. She's tired.
- 47:28This is a shitty situation and now this man is Is, you know,
- 47:31even if it's not a drug to drink, it is still alcohol.
- 47:35It is still something that is going to dull your senses and
- 47:39your reaction times. Yeah, no.
- 47:40I get it and I think that he understands Susan, Sontag.
- 47:43He's pushing and he's like, okay, that's fine.
- 47:45He pours himself a glass and not her.
- 47:47So I think he's cool with the so, like between that and like,
- 47:50he insists on going and getting her bag for her and, like flag.
- 47:55She's like, yeah. Go to my car with my keys and
- 47:57get my shit. Yes, it's very distressing and
- 48:01It seems like he kind of pushed the point until she just was
- 48:04just like, okay, fine. You can go get my bag for me.
- 48:07It's things like this that, you know, spend, we're Southern here
- 48:12to where it's like Goods, good manners, it's gentlemanly, it's
- 48:15the chivalrous thing to do, but it also kind of makes me a
- 48:19little bit distrustful of chivalry because it
- 48:22automatically puts a woman in a position where she's more prone.
- 48:26We mean, like things like that. Like he's like it's raining and
- 48:30dark outside. We're in a bad neighborhood.
- 48:32Let me go get your bag for you. On the surface, all the points.
- 48:35He says sounds like a good nice thing for him to do but he is
- 48:39taking the keys to her vehicle. He was going into for me at
- 48:43least my vehicle is like a very personal space.
- 48:45You know what I mean? You know, there's things like
- 48:48that. Like, I am very aware of when
- 48:54people will hold the door open for me, especially men, if
- 48:58you're holding the door open, and then you're following me
- 49:00inside. Side.
- 49:01Are you going to be checking out my ass?
- 49:03It's happened before. It's happened before and gross
- 49:07comments have come from that it like there's just little things
- 49:11like that where like you don't want to automatically assume the
- 49:14worst but shitty things can happen in those moments.
- 49:17Yeah, I mean it's kind of what he was talking about like you
- 49:19kind of have to just trust that but that's the whole point of
- 49:23tests character basically is that she's kind of she does like
- 49:29have those but she doesn't really respond to them because I
- 49:32think that she has, I mean, she does to an Temperature.
- 49:35I think that she has a little bit more faith than she
- 49:38probably. She's a little bit too naive.
- 49:39I think I don't think it's necessarily naive.
- 49:42Its you know what? Like she's going to go and if
- 49:49this guy is unhinged, even if he's not necessarily planning,
- 49:52something if she's out really hostile to him what could
- 49:55happen, you know. She doesn't know him.
- 49:57Yeah, so and she does some smart things like she's very
- 50:00conscientious about locking the door.
- 50:02She checked, like she takes picture of his driver's license.
- 50:05Love that is thing, love that? And that's that's a great idea.
- 50:09You've done that to me before to you've liked taking pictures of
- 50:12your Uber driver. Yeah.
- 50:13I had to take an Uber by myself, which is something that unless I
- 50:17can completely avoid it, I don't do.
- 50:20So, I take the screenshot. The man's name is license plate.
- 50:25Model car. Here's, here's who's getting me.
- 50:29If I go missing, give the police this information.
- 50:31Yeah, very good. So after If she's done that,
- 50:36this is actually the scene where she comes out and he's got the
- 50:38wine glasses and stuff. So all that's happening there,
- 50:41she sits down and he's asking what brings her to town.
- 50:44She's talking about her job interview, which is what she's
- 50:48in town for. She's from out of town.
- 50:49Yes, obviously. But she's going to be
- 50:52interviewing for this person. That's working on a documentary
- 50:55about musicians in town. She's gonna be a research
- 50:58assistant for this documentary who she wants to talk about the
- 51:03art scene in Detroit. And, you know, he was like, oh,
- 51:08well, have I heard about heard of anything buyer and she was
- 51:11blue easy and he was like, oh, I love that.
- 51:14And she like is like, oh sure you've seen it and then he named
- 51:17some very specific things just because really he goes, you
- 51:19know, he should interview for this documentary me.
- 51:24He does kind of say, it menacingly like four minutes
- 51:27like it's happening and then he is Apparently one of the
- 51:31cofounders of this Art Collective called The Lion
- 51:34Tamers. Which is confusing to me because
- 51:37the way it's described, it sounds like it's local to
- 51:39Detroit. However his licenses we saw was
- 51:42for Brooklyn. Yeah.
- 51:45I mean there are people that don't update their license.
- 51:48I know there are and I totally understand that that's a red
- 51:51flag there too but I don't know. They're the thing with this guy
- 51:54is like there is a lot of things that you can pick apart but I
- 51:57think we're starting to learn that he's actually kind of a
- 51:59genuine person, that's what I'm saying.
- 52:01Like I feel like his character is fascinating and I kind of
- 52:04love that he Gets killed off before we get anything
- 52:07definitive about him. Either way, I just feel if he
- 52:11really had any motives, I think that he would have acted on it
- 52:15that night. I don't know, maybe not, but I
- 52:18don't know. I think most people like this,
- 52:20probably don't play the long game, but then again, I'm not in
- 52:24the mind of a person like that. I don't know how they like, what
- 52:27the end goal is here, but the fact that he's actually familiar
- 52:32with this director and their work kind of Gets her to get a
- 52:37little bit more relaxed. Yeah.
- 52:38They're custom Common Ground. Yeah and he can actually like
- 52:41have a discussion with her so we got to her, she's actually
- 52:44drinking the wine now. Yeah, they're actually enjoying
- 52:47each other. Having a good time.
- 52:48She's talking about the differences that men and women
- 52:51face in general because she was like, say the situation had been
- 52:54reversed and you pulled up and I was already here and he's like
- 52:57you wouldn't let me and she goes oh yeah, absolutely not.
- 53:03I mean the totally understand. Do like, I don't think I would
- 53:06let anybody in either personally.
- 53:09Yeah. So I just but I mean, she's
- 53:11talking about like how they like the difference between men and
- 53:13women and how they have to approach these things because
- 53:15it's like, it's a different thing for them.
- 53:17And then he shows her the amazing trick on how to put a
- 53:21duvet on the covers. And again, this feels like a
- 53:25moment where he could attack her while he's got the duvet
- 53:28comforter on his head. But then also, how is he going
- 53:31to do that? Because he's in the duvet cover.
- 53:33And also, this is how, you know, it's a twin Size bed because I
- 53:36was thinking about trying to do this our duvet cover and too big
- 53:40yes there's absolutely no what your arms might be long enough,
- 53:44but I don't know that you're tall enough that you could be in
- 53:47there without it being like I want drapey on the floor.
- 53:51I want to try it after seeing it because it just looks like fun.
- 53:53Like the whole point is to just take the duvet cover and just
- 53:56wrap yourself in and just kind of accept the other part of that
- 54:00is that our duvet cover has like little ties.
- 54:02So you tie the corner of the duvet.
- 54:05To it. So it doesn't slide around.
- 54:08So that's a whole other thing. Yeah, yeah.
- 54:12It's just it's a fun little scene.
- 54:15And they get Goofy, and have fun.
- 54:16And there's like some tension and it's like, oh, are they
- 54:18going to kiss, goodnight. Well, also, there's like a
- 54:21little bit of dialogue between him and her.
- 54:23I think they're talking about relationship stuff here and she
- 54:28makes a comment here. That is very important to her
- 54:31character and she says, my problem is I'm always going
- 54:33back, which is Is like something that plays out constantly in
- 54:38this movie because she's always going back.
- 54:40She tries to give people the benefit of the doubt and that's
- 54:44just her character. It's kind of her flaw.
- 54:46But see, here's the thing though.
- 54:49Advocating for giving Keith the benefit of the doubt here, hmm,
- 54:53right. Because you're saying that he,
- 54:55at this point he seemed like a nice enough guy, there's some
- 54:58trust built, however, and she and she goes down to the
- 55:02basement for him and she ends up getting trapped.
- 55:04She has no ability to To save him.
- 55:06Yeah, she shouldn't have done that.
- 55:07I'm later on. She goes back for AJ.
- 55:10Yeah. Giving him the benefit of the
- 55:12doubt. Absolutely shouldn't have done
- 55:14that either but for a completely different reason.
- 55:17Yeah. So it's just kind of It sucks to
- 55:22live in a world where it's like, do I go around assuming the
- 55:26worst of people and potentially putting myself in danger or
- 55:30what, you know what I mean? Yeah definitely.
- 55:32And I think that's a big, big Crux of what this movie is
- 55:36getting at. Yeah, definitely.
- 55:38And he's like a dress that people are very like critical of
- 55:43her always doing these things but he's like, I get it, that's
- 55:46true character. But also if she doesn't do any
- 55:48of these things, there's no movie.
- 55:50Yeah. Well, if she doesn't well,
- 55:51that's one of the things that gets me to like people will talk
- 55:54about. Like there's always these pots
- 55:57where this girl and she's special and important and she's
- 56:01the one chosen out of a million and she's gonna revolutionize
- 56:04the world, do you just want to read a story about a person
- 56:08that's living in a dystopian society?
- 56:11And that's it. That's done the end.
- 56:13Like sure, Katniss Everdeen ends up becoming super special face
- 56:18of a revolution, but that's the fucking song.
- 56:20Tory, you can't get mad about a story being a story.
- 56:26Nothing that her character does seems out of line with her as
- 56:30her character. Yeah.
- 56:33So it's nighttime his name. They go to night night.
- 56:36She wakes up in the middle of the night and she's hearing some
- 56:39noises, and her door is open, even though she locked, it
- 56:43spooky very spooky, and then she is hearing.
- 56:50He's ha, It is having this guy. I don't know if this is like a
- 56:55common thing for him, he might just be having some terrible
- 56:57nightmares. We were talking about how she
- 57:00has to go to the bathroom later and there's no toilet paper, and
- 57:03he must have used all the toilet paper.
- 57:05So he's having nightmares flashbacks about his horrible
- 57:07poop. Say, had?
- 57:08Yeah, red flag, but he's just like in there on the couch like
- 57:16just like, little, like whimpers and screams.
- 57:18It's very much like when your dog is a And it was like
- 57:21barking, but not like the little booths but like a full-on.
- 57:24I tell you how you laugh Chuckles were raised in her
- 57:29sleep. So she goes out there and she
- 57:32wakes him up and that startles him.
- 57:34He's pretty upset about exactly what the fuck are you doing
- 57:37here? And she's like, did you open my
- 57:39door and he's like, know what the fuck are you talking about?
- 57:41And then she's like, okay, cool. And also, while this is
- 57:45happening, I think in the background you can see that the
- 57:48basement door is open now to yeah.
- 57:50Yeah, so she's like okay I guess I'll go back to bed and then
- 57:55he's like, okay I've got to go back to screaming and then cuts
- 57:58to the next morning she wakes up.
- 58:00She looks distraught it. What time she wakes up which one
- 58:04if you have a very important job interview?
- 58:05Would you not say I set five alarms if there's something, you
- 58:08know what I mean? Yeah something important.
- 58:10Yeah, something important. You're going to make sure that
- 58:11it's not like her phone died. She's she's immediately checking
- 58:15the time there but then she's also very slow getting out of
- 58:18the house. And I'm like, did you just wake
- 58:19up later than I wanted to but you're so okay on time I don't
- 58:23know what's happened. Took it as she didn't have
- 58:25enough time to get ready but then again she shows up at this
- 58:28interview and she's looking fine like yeah I'm like she's taking
- 58:31the shower, she's cleaned up. Yeah but Keith is gone, he's not
- 58:37there in the morning, he left her.
- 58:38No a sweet note saying hey good luck break a leg.
- 58:42By the way, had a really fun that with you last night and
- 58:44leave the key in the lock box because they only have one key.
- 58:47Yeah. Seems like in case, you know, I
- 58:49come back before you leave the Key in the lock box.
- 58:51So she does she goes to her interview, it seems to go.
- 58:54Well we don't really get to hear a lot about it but we just see a
- 58:57general conversation and afterwards.
- 59:00Catherine, the director asks her where she staying and she says,
- 59:03oh I've got an Airbnb in brightmore and Catherine says
- 59:07red flag. Red flag, red flag, right?
- 59:10Barb Barbara Street is what she's talking about?
- 59:12Yeah, the neighborhood is called Bryn Mawr.
- 59:13Okay. Yeah.
- 59:14The streets Barber. Yeah, yeah.
- 59:16Yeah. So she's she's like that.
- 59:18So really rough neighborhood and she goes no.
- 59:20It's finally gets a cute house and I've got a roommate and
- 59:23would she we did get like a scene when she was walking out
- 59:27to go to her car to drive to the interview that she finally got a
- 59:30look at what the neighborhood looked like.
- 59:31Because she didn't really get a good look at it.
- 59:33And when she showed up at night because it's night, none of the
- 59:35houses had lights on because they're all abandoned and broken
- 59:38down. But it's like a really rough
- 59:40neighborhood. Yeah.
- 59:42And he actually shot these scenes in Detroit.
- 59:44Everything else is filmed in Bolivia, I think I said Bulgaria
- 59:48Bulgaria Belgravia. Out of you, it's all filmed in
- 59:53Aldo via montanaro. Yeah, so yeah, so after the
- 59:58interview, she comes back to the house.
- 1:00:01And as she's going there, this is like another, like, what the
- 1:00:04fuck moment that is really fucking creepy.
- 1:00:08But she gets out of the car and all of a sudden there's like
- 1:00:11this homeless man down the road running at her and he's yelling.
- 1:00:16Hey, little girl, come here. And we learn later that this Guy
- 1:00:21has good motives. However if you're wanting to get
- 1:00:24somebody to actually not go inside a house, don't chase
- 1:00:27after them sprinting yelling, hey little girl, come here also
- 1:00:32and I cannot emphasize this enough.
- 1:00:36Do not call grown-ass women, little girl.
- 1:00:42Yeah. Also take young lady out of your
- 1:00:45vocabulary to thank you, baby. Never, never do that.
- 1:00:53Hey, baby. Come here Jay.
- 1:00:55Shasha, Jell-O shot. So yeah, like, it's like a
- 1:01:00really fucking tense scene and she gets there just in the nick
- 1:01:04of time. And this is where I thought her
- 1:01:06not knowing the fucking combination was gonna come back
- 1:01:08to haunt her and she just, she just got, it was like a red
- 1:01:11herring. This guy is just not very good
- 1:01:14at getting his point across. Like he's like, banging on the
- 1:01:17door, like, get out of the house since like God, no, I'm not
- 1:01:20getting out of the house. You're fucking terrifying.
- 1:01:22It's like say, what's going on? Yeah, it's like the opening
- 1:01:26scene of urban legend with the the gas station attendant.
- 1:01:30Who's that actor? Brad dwarf.
- 1:01:31Yeah, Brad Dourif think. I don't know why I can never
- 1:01:34remember that. Just Let's try and well
- 1:01:37everything he's done. I see what you're saying.
- 1:01:39There are similarities there. However, the thing with that is
- 1:01:42he has a speech impediment where he has a stutter and he can get
- 1:01:46the words out. This guy just is, like not very
- 1:01:49good at this. He's like threatening her, but
- 1:01:51he's like, what the fuck is wrong?
- 1:01:52I was a nice fucking guy. I tried to help you.
- 1:01:55Yeah. Like I was telling you, get out
- 1:01:57of that house and like I called you a little girl and, you know,
- 1:02:00I thought that was really cool and, you know, you probably
- 1:02:03should have liked me. Yeah, and like, there's a woman
- 1:02:05in there. And she's going to see you as a
- 1:02:06little girl. Yeah, by the way, baby.
- 1:02:09And there's also like a really fucked-up, dude, in there, like,
- 1:02:12I get out of the house, but he's like, no, like banging on the
- 1:02:14door yelling at her and so, she is freaked out.
- 1:02:17She calls the cops. She's packing her bag.
- 1:02:19She in the cops are like we cannot send a car out there
- 1:02:22right now. We are busy.
- 1:02:23This is Detroit. Yeah.
- 1:02:26And she's like, but I and she's like, I don't even know if I can
- 1:02:30get to my car without possibly getting like no.
- 1:02:33Like that's the shitty thing is. She's Trapped in this house now
- 1:02:37because like I wouldn't want to step outside of their like
- 1:02:40there's like is he hiding in the bushes?
- 1:02:42Is he hiding in one of those houses over there to scare easy
- 1:02:45under my car? Yeah, like I would be terrified
- 1:02:48that he would be breaking through a window.
- 1:02:50Yeah, I'm surprised is actually not actively trying to break
- 1:02:53into that house. Yes, we learned later that the
- 1:02:56people in this movie aside, from the cops have zero qualms with
- 1:02:59breaking Windows. Maybe this is like a Detroit
- 1:03:02thing. We see this in it follows also
- 1:03:05So I'm yes. There are only Detroit movies
- 1:03:08that we've covered. I know we have Michigan
- 1:03:10listeners. Tell us.
- 1:03:12Yeah. But yeah.
- 1:03:15So she's like freaking out about it and she's just like, okay
- 1:03:20well I guess I'll just you know wait and hope Keith doesn't get
- 1:03:23murdered on his way into the house and we can leave together
- 1:03:27when he gets here I guess. And so she goes she has an
- 1:03:31anxiety p and there's no toilet paper.
- 1:03:34Yeah, you've talked about your method with this, but she does
- 1:03:37not, she does not subscribe to that.
- 1:03:40Well, I do think she has to drip dry in the moment because she's
- 1:03:42got nothing to work with. I think that she's an awkward
- 1:03:46pants around my ankles waddled down to the basement which would
- 1:03:49have been awkward to watch but also like fantastically
- 1:03:55hilarious I would have liked to have seen what that would be
- 1:04:00like like I'm thinking of like that gif of Patrick from
- 1:04:03SpongeBob where he's like guys pants.
- 1:04:04I think, what these guys arms out, like, all the way like
- 1:04:07balancing. It's just like waddling back and
- 1:04:09forth but yeah, so she's looking around for toilet paper.
- 1:04:12Let's go down to the basement. For just seems like a really
- 1:04:15inconvenient place to leave your toilet paper.
- 1:04:17Yeah, I would put it, I don't love where we have to keep ours
- 1:04:22just because we have a tiny bathroom, but at least it's
- 1:04:25like, I mean, we only have 14 in our house.
- 1:04:29We had a basement, I wouldn't put in a basement And with
- 1:04:36little Ducky on it, I feel like, where the fuck are you going
- 1:04:39with our toilet paper? Do not put it in the basement.
- 1:04:43That is grounds for divorce. Like I toss it up in the crawl
- 1:04:47space, like I got to dive underneath my fucking house and
- 1:04:52your toilet paper. No.
- 1:04:54So she goes down there together and wouldn't, you know, the door
- 1:04:58closes behind her and locks her in.
- 1:05:01And I feel like I would have brought that door open from the
- 1:05:03beginning, but I'm also a Baby who is afraid of basements,
- 1:05:06which I feel like we've talked about on this before.
- 1:05:08Anyway, whoa, she opens the door and that basements, not looking
- 1:05:12good right from the get-go. Maybe I would do the same to.
- 1:05:15However, I think that I trust the door.
- 1:05:19I would have trusted the door also but trusted or I don't
- 1:05:23trust a strange man. I don't.
- 1:05:26This would be a completely different movie if it were you.
- 1:05:28Yeah. Like none of this would have
- 1:05:30ever happened. Like I would have seen the light
- 1:05:33go on in the House and I would've been like, all right,
- 1:05:36we're gonna we're just going to drive for just gonna leave and
- 1:05:39I'm going to file for a refund that's what's gonna happen.
- 1:05:42I think honestly you could have maybe driven to a nearby City
- 1:05:45and just like I'm setting my alarm extra early tomorrow and
- 1:05:48driving. I'm sorry but what fucking
- 1:05:51convention is going to take over every single Hotel in Detroit.
- 1:05:54Detroit is not like a small City, okay?
- 1:05:58I found it here. What he called, he called it a
- 1:05:59medical thing convention so that's what it is.
- 1:06:01A medical thing convention. Okay.
- 1:06:03Well I said medical convention And you acted like I was really
- 1:06:06far off from what I know and I was off by a single word.
- 1:06:09No, it's the same thing. I think I just like the idea of
- 1:06:12it actually being called medical thing convention where, like all
- 1:06:16things medical medical thing convention.
- 1:06:18Come on down to Detroit, we're not just cars.
- 1:06:22Yeah, we're medical things to and broken windows, I guess.
- 1:06:29So. Now she's locked in this
- 1:06:30basement. She still has the key in her
- 1:06:33pocket, from where I was running from the guy.
- 1:06:36She left her phone in the room. Yeah, so she's just down there.
- 1:06:42Like she's got starts. Just gotta wait till Q comes
- 1:06:44back. This is a good way to separate
- 1:06:46the phone. Yeah, situation here.
- 1:06:48I like this. This feels organic and real.
- 1:06:50So she's down there, just kind of like exploring around and she
- 1:06:53moved some things around on the shelf and what do you know,
- 1:06:55there's a rope sticking out of the wall?
- 1:06:58Nope. So red flag red flag so you know
- 1:07:03no one test she's like, okay. I'll bet and then she fucking
- 1:07:07grabs it and pulls it open and then opens up a secret door.
- 1:07:11And then finally, she looks down the hallway and she says, Nope.
- 1:07:16And then that's it. However, she lets the Curiosity,
- 1:07:20get the best of her and she figures out a way.
- 1:07:22She's actually pretty like in. Like she's got a lot of
- 1:07:25Ingenuity with this. This is impressive.
- 1:07:27Yes, so she sets up, there's like a large mirror and she sets
- 1:07:31it up. So that way it's reflecting the
- 1:07:33light from the ceiling in into the hallway, all while wearing
- 1:07:38my shoes rocking the Stan, Smith's, My Adidas.
- 1:07:44I just every single time I see her, she's like the fucking
- 1:07:46shoes. It's like that Meme of a Leo
- 1:07:48DiCaprio. That's right there.
- 1:07:52Leo DiCaprio, you guys are besties.
- 1:07:55Yeah, I think I caught that from New Year.
- 1:07:57New You. This is what they call him.
- 1:07:58And uh yeah. So she shines a little lie down
- 1:08:03there. So she decides to walk down the
- 1:08:05All and she finds a little door to the side.
- 1:08:07So she opens up the room here and this is the spookiest
- 1:08:13fucking room ever. It's just a room with a
- 1:08:16camcorder, on a tripod, a bed that is stained with all kinds
- 1:08:20of shit. I don't want to know about and a
- 1:08:23bucket and it just. Oh, and also a bloody handprint
- 1:08:29on the wall. You it's enough to know that
- 1:08:32this is not a good place. Yeah, so she starts freaking
- 1:08:37out, understandably runs back out to the basement.
- 1:08:41And when she gets back out there, she notices that Keith is
- 1:08:44outside. Trying to get inside the house,
- 1:08:47there's a little window that is it's kind of like one of those
- 1:08:51little square ones. I don't know what you call that
- 1:08:53type. I don't know.
- 1:08:54They're all Travis is World rectangular regularly, not
- 1:08:58Square, they're narrow rectangular and you have to push
- 1:09:01them open so it's Jim and she can't get it open.
- 1:09:05Yourself, Keith helps her, she manages to get out there back up
- 1:09:10on what she does. Is she gives him the key so that
- 1:09:12way he can open. Oh that's right, that's right.
- 1:09:14Yeah, yeah. Because they don't have to break
- 1:09:16the window yet. Yeah.
- 1:09:18So he lets her back up she and he's like, just kind of laugh
- 1:09:22and he's like hey what's going on?
- 1:09:23But she's really freaked out. She's like you don't understand.
- 1:09:25There's something really really bad here.
- 1:09:27There's a room down there. Nothing good happened.
- 1:09:30Like there's a bed and a camera and a bucket and he is not
- 1:09:34taking. It's okay.
- 1:09:35He is so fucking. I have been trying to defend him
- 1:09:37so far this movie because I understand he's been coming
- 1:09:40across this creepy o at times, but he's got, he's been, he's
- 1:09:45had a good heart about it. However, this right here, he's
- 1:09:47like a camcorder, a bed and a bucket, I don't understand
- 1:09:50what's the problem and I'm like, what the fuck are you talking
- 1:09:53about? That just makes me think that
- 1:09:54these are your items. Keith maybe you are fucked up.
- 1:09:58I don't know, you know, I'm starting to have second
- 1:10:00thoughts. He's like, you know what, that
- 1:10:01all just sounds kind of normal. Like yeah, camcorders.
- 1:10:04Not Have a camcorder mattress and a bucket.
- 1:10:08Like you've been. You've been using the bathroom.
- 1:10:11Is that that bucket man? I left you a bucket.
- 1:10:16So he's like oh, you know what? I'm sorry.
- 1:10:18Because she's freaking out at his whack of.
- 1:10:20Yeah. Like we need to leave and he is
- 1:10:22like, calm down rude and she's like fine.
- 1:10:26If you don't want to leave all we've like I'm just I'm out I'm
- 1:10:29fucking out. It was you know?
- 1:10:31I was excited to get to know you a little bit better but nope,
- 1:10:34we're done here and he goes sir. Sorry, I just like I need to see
- 1:10:36it for myself. Yeah, so we asked her is like,
- 1:10:38please just stay here. I'll go check.
- 1:10:40Well, I know one point like he's physically blocking her from
- 1:10:43leaving, is he? Yes like he's actually blocking
- 1:10:46her from leaving. He's like whoa, don't go.
- 1:10:47And it's like yeah I do to make that decision.
- 1:10:51No sir. So he goes down there and we
- 1:10:57don't follow him. We're stuck with tests and he we
- 1:11:01hear him like down the hall. Yeah, I like you hear him at
- 1:11:04first is like you. I see it, and then she continues
- 1:11:08to call for him and then suddenly he's not answering any
- 1:11:10more. So, she looks back down the
- 1:11:12hallway. And there happens to be a door
- 1:11:16at the end of the tunnel like, and why would he go down that
- 1:11:19fucking door? Also the speed with which he did
- 1:11:21all of this. See, okay, I don't know if he
- 1:11:24went down there himself or if the creature happened to get him
- 1:11:28at this time. I'm not putting it past him with
- 1:11:30how oblivious to this whole situation.
- 1:11:33He's like, wow. You know what?
- 1:11:34He's kind of of like Justin Wong in this scene may be like, oh
- 1:11:38like there's more places for us to go in this house.
- 1:11:40Cool, I'm gonna continue for activities.
- 1:11:42Yeah. So she notices that door and she
- 1:11:46goes down there and opens it up. And this is probably the height
- 1:11:49of the tension for me in this movie because the entire time
- 1:11:52I'm like, nope, just got just go call the police just called the
- 1:11:55police. Just say something bad happened
- 1:11:58it. Because at this point, like, he
- 1:12:00calls for her, And every like hair on the back of my neck is
- 1:12:06standing up saying he is luring you down there this, I know this
- 1:12:10is the thing about this scene that gets me.
- 1:12:13Like there are times where I'm able to immerse myself in a
- 1:12:16scene and be like, like I can put myself in a scene and be
- 1:12:19like, how the fuck would you react to this?
- 1:12:21And a lot of times, it's kind of hard to do that, but this one
- 1:12:23right here, I can actually like imagine myself perfectly being
- 1:12:26test here and like, just picturing myself going down the
- 1:12:30stairs as she does. I'm like Hair, my hair stand up
- 1:12:33thinking about it too it's so fucking creepy.
- 1:12:35I'm like she's got no reason to look so far.
- 1:12:40He's given her very little reason not to trust him.
- 1:12:43Yeah. And so she hears him screaming
- 1:12:45for help and she wants to do the right thing.
- 1:12:48I'm so incredibly distressful because you chitchat and over a
- 1:12:52glass of wine is not enough for me.
- 1:12:54Yeah no no I mean for this right here, this isn't enough to like
- 1:12:57do this for sure and it I mean it does feel like he is wearing
- 1:13:01her down there because he's just yelling at us help.
- 1:13:04It's like really faint really distant and so she gets down
- 1:13:07there and there's a bunch of red flags all over the place,
- 1:13:10because there's dog cages, there's great.
- 1:13:13There's a lot of stuff and then he comes crawling up at her and
- 1:13:17he's like, we've got to go. There's somebody else down here.
- 1:13:19Somebody bit me and she's like okay well let's go this way.
- 1:13:22Goes no no go that way. Yeah.
- 1:13:24What the fuck? I keep going towards the thing.
- 1:13:27I don't understand is thought process here.
- 1:13:29I don't know where she's like, let's get out of here.
- 1:13:32Trapped. It's an underground tunnel.
- 1:13:34You're just cornering yourself. See in, I don't know like I
- 1:13:38would trust test here but you know, maybe he is a little bit
- 1:13:41disoriented because like when, if you're down there in the dark
- 1:13:43and you don't have any white, you lose all sense everything I
- 1:13:48absolutely did this thing. Once I'm on the school field
- 1:13:51trip where we were in a cave and we turn off all of our
- 1:13:54flashlights and you get to like hold on to the rail and in total
- 1:13:58darkness, like you just lose everything.
- 1:14:01Yeah. Lutely.
- 1:14:02Yeah, but I mean trust test here like she came from she's got a
- 1:14:06light, like, fucking don't fight her on this, but we don't get a
- 1:14:10chance for that or even to play out because all of a sudden, the
- 1:14:13mother just comes up out of nowhere, grabs his head and
- 1:14:16bashes it in, and then that's that.
- 1:14:19Then we cut to the ocean and Justin long and his convertible
- 1:14:24singing Rikki-Tikki-Tavi. He does a good job, man, like he
- 1:14:30does a good job. I'm seeing this, this is the
- 1:14:33thing we're introduced to Justin along in a very Charming way,
- 1:14:37trying to like, set him up to be like this guy that, you know,
- 1:14:40might be kind of good and then he's getting a call from
- 1:14:44somebody. And then they're like, hey, just
- 1:14:48to let you know, there's some some heavy shit this girl.
- 1:14:52Her name is Megan something. I can't remember.
- 1:14:54Yeah, she's making some allegations about you and she is
- 1:15:00refusing to continue with the pie.
- 1:15:02Eyelet that you shooting. If you're going to be attached
- 1:15:03to it, we're conducting an investigation.
- 1:15:06But really, there's not a scenario where you're not fired
- 1:15:09and he's like well I was a part of this before she's a fucking
- 1:15:11lying bitch red flag. Yeah he's like he is, he's not
- 1:15:17he's acting as if like this is all brand new to him as if it's
- 1:15:21something that I like, how the fuck where the fuck could this
- 1:15:24have come from? I have no idea second, he called
- 1:15:27her and he said that she's fucking lying.
- 1:15:29I knew from the second that what they Saying actually happened.
- 1:15:33Yeah, I just knew it. Everybody was like, well, we
- 1:15:36don't really get it confirmed until he's like you're at the
- 1:15:38bar. No.
- 1:15:39He I'm going to be on. This is Hannah.
- 1:15:42That was me my first time watching this because I was
- 1:15:44like, this is kind of, it could be kind of interesting to see it
- 1:15:47play out that way, I don't know, maybe like I want to give just
- 1:15:50along the benefit of the doubt because I love Justin long, but
- 1:15:54watching it this time too. I'm like, oh no.
- 1:15:56This guys fucking he's not like, I never touched her.
- 1:15:59I was never alone with her. He does play it off, I was like,
- 1:16:02what the fuck like where did that even come from?
- 1:16:04Like he's acting as though this is brand-new.
- 1:16:06He has no idea where this came from but like, I don't know.
- 1:16:10I got different vibes from this time.
- 1:16:12I was like, okay, he's a little bit squeezy.
- 1:16:15He pulls off to the side of the road and I like oh by the way
- 1:16:19the story is going to be in The Hollywood Reporter tomorrow.
- 1:16:22Yeah. And a nice touch that I read
- 1:16:24online. The person that they said is
- 1:16:26writing, the article is actually the person that wrote a lot of
- 1:16:29the me to articles. I exposed a lot of Mike.
- 1:16:32Harvey Weinstein. All those people cool.
- 1:16:34Yeah. So they actually attached like a
- 1:16:36real person, it's kind of cool. And yeah it's funny to see like
- 1:16:39he's getting that same thing. So I mean if it is like
- 1:16:42something like that I think that's assigned to like the
- 1:16:44legitimacy of the accusations towards him there.
- 1:16:48Well, so he cut it has to him meeting with a financial
- 1:16:50advisor. We tried to pause on the
- 1:16:52spreadsheet, but neither of us is wealthy enough for this
- 1:16:56spreadsheet to make any sense to us.
- 1:16:58Yeah, I'm so fucking stupid with this stuff.
- 1:17:00Like it did not make it. Like, it was Cool to look at it.
- 1:17:02But I'm like, um, I don't like there's like Investments, liquid
- 1:17:09assets liabilities so many numbers.
- 1:17:13Like I don't know how much money he actually has, but what the
- 1:17:16wealth manager says is that at his current rate of spending
- 1:17:20with no income coming in, he will be at zero in three months.
- 1:17:25That's pretty intense. Legal fee is because he's he's
- 1:17:28fighting the initial one against His accusation and then he's
- 1:17:33also going to like file a defamation.
- 1:17:36Yeah. Again soon and overall it's
- 1:17:38going to cost him a hundred and forty thousand dollars.
- 1:17:41Yeah. So he's so, as well as managers
- 1:17:44like I suggest that you make some decisions about your assets
- 1:17:47and I'm also going to give you your files back.
- 1:17:49And he's like, what does that mean?
- 1:17:50And he goes, I am no like her wealth manager.
- 1:17:53Good, good move. Yeah.
- 1:17:55Everybody's like getting away from him.
- 1:17:59So he flies to Michigan. And so, that way, he can check
- 1:18:03out his property, sell them, because they're not bringing in
- 1:18:06enough money as like rental properties, to be.
- 1:18:08Yeah, he could sell them, but he'd only have like, a couple
- 1:18:11months time. Basically, the guy was implying
- 1:18:13you need to sell your house if you really want to be able to
- 1:18:15survive this thing. So while he's there, he calls
- 1:18:19his lawyer saying that, like he just wants to get a chance to
- 1:18:23talk to Megan and you know, clear this all up in the lawyers
- 1:18:26like, absolutely not. Also, why are you in a rental
- 1:18:29car? Niko's, because I'm in Michigan
- 1:18:30and it goes that. Doesn't look great.
- 1:18:33Yeah, it's like why the fuck did you leave the state?
- 1:18:35You shouldn't do that. He's like, do you think I'm
- 1:18:37actually gonna get arrested? He's like I think it's a
- 1:18:39legitimate possibility that you might be arrested.
- 1:18:42Yeah. Like he's got no clue how
- 1:18:44serious all of this at. Yeah.
- 1:18:47But he's got to go there because he's got to check on his
- 1:18:49property so that he's not wanting to sell his home.
- 1:18:52That's the thing he's wanting to try and just, yeah, it's
- 1:18:54California home. Yeah, thank you.
- 1:18:58Yeah. So he pulls up test his, car's
- 1:19:01still there. R.
- 1:19:02The door of the basement. Still open toothbrush is still
- 1:19:04on the floor toiletry bags. Just like everything is still as
- 1:19:08long as yeah. Everything is here.
- 1:19:10Yeah and so he calls the the management the property
- 1:19:13management company and they're like oh well we only said the
- 1:19:16send the maid services before somebody's going to be renting
- 1:19:20it and he goes that. You see why there's a problem
- 1:19:22with that which I hate that. I agree with him on something
- 1:19:25but I do agree with him on us and they're just like well I
- 1:19:29don't know what to tell you it hasn't been rented out in a
- 1:19:31couple weeks. Yeah but it's kind of cool to
- 1:19:33give us a perspective of how long it's been since everything
- 1:19:36beforehand played out. Yeah.
- 1:19:38So he's washing his face and talking to his mom and she's
- 1:19:44just like, you know how about you just come see us in
- 1:19:46Michigan. It's not that far a fly and he's
- 1:19:48like I just I can't I got work stuff going on.
- 1:19:52Yeah, they hit it is like yeah, your father wants you to come
- 1:19:56years ago, dad actually said that he's like well, you know
- 1:19:58how he is. And so you get the idea that is
- 1:20:01Him and his dad, don't exactly have a good relationship and
- 1:20:04then he gets a call from Zach kreger himself.
- 1:20:07Yes. And he hangs up on his mom as
- 1:20:10she's like, by love you. And he's like, yeah, fuck you
- 1:20:12and in and then he immediately uses a slurry.
- 1:20:14Yeah, there's that. This is the moment that is like
- 1:20:17the Awakening that for some people including me the first
- 1:20:20time that he's like, really a piece of shit.
- 1:20:22He's like hey, what's up, homophobic slur and then it cuts
- 1:20:26to at the bar but if that's actually how he, yeah, it's so
- 1:20:29powerful. They swear That was still very
- 1:20:32shitty. Yeah, I know it's still shitty
- 1:20:35it. Like, in a way that catches you
- 1:20:37off guard. Yeah.
- 1:20:38He's like what? And then it cuts to him at the
- 1:20:41bar is that Gregor is like, alright man.
- 1:20:45Like just like be real with me. What the fuck actually happened
- 1:20:47and then he's like, all right man you know what?
- 1:20:49I'm going to actually be real with you.
- 1:20:52She said no she took a lot of convincing but you know me I
- 1:20:55don't take no for an I'm a fucking dog I'm persistent you
- 1:20:57know so like I kept like going and then like I started like
- 1:21:00actually doing something. Then and then she was kind of
- 1:21:02cool with it eventually and then that's that and then totally
- 1:21:07just like openly admitting to fucking raping her.
- 1:21:10Yeah. It's just really nasty and then
- 1:21:12it cuts to him, he's back at the house on Barbary and he's
- 1:21:17calling the girl that accused him his very drunk.
- 1:21:20I'm very concerned about the fact that he might have driven
- 1:21:22himself to and from the bar because he seems like that time
- 1:21:25so he definitely did no fucking way it didn't and he's like
- 1:21:29leaving her voicemail, which is very ill-advised.
- 1:21:32It's just like whenever you're ready to like, appalling, like,
- 1:21:35I'm not even mad at you anymore. Like, it's fine.
- 1:21:38We can talk about this. I forgive you like, what the
- 1:21:40fuck is wrong with you? Dude, it sucks, man.
- 1:21:44I fucking hate seen Justin along be this type of guy all the time
- 1:21:47in horror movies but goddamn it. He plays it really well.
- 1:21:51He does. He does have one minor redeeming
- 1:21:55thing. He has gudetama boxers on yes.
- 1:21:58When he wakes up the next morning, a super hungover.
- 1:22:00You and I were both like, Is that good time, by the way, if
- 1:22:04none of you guys know who gudetama is, will come up right
- 1:22:07now. He is a little egg yolk.
- 1:22:09That is just cute. As can be, he's got a butt cheek
- 1:22:12guy's butt, hanging out, he's tired all the time.
- 1:22:15He's sleeping and he's drooling. He's just so fucking cute.
- 1:22:18Jesse got me a little pushy of him for Christmas.
- 1:22:20I love it. So, yeah, he fits the morning,
- 1:22:26he looks through the bedroom and finds Tessa's stuff and he like
- 1:22:31makes them as Best attempt to League log into her computer.
- 1:22:34Do we see what I actually typed in?
- 1:22:35I'm pretty sure he just typed in her name test.
- 1:22:38Yeah. And then when that didn't work
- 1:22:39he just tosses it. I gotta say man fucking amazing
- 1:22:43toss a weari. How many takes that took?
- 1:22:45Like I wonder if like he actually just toss it up there
- 1:22:48and when did perfectly back? How he put it?
- 1:22:50Where I picked it up. I'm like what the fuck?
- 1:22:52Yeah, I was very stressed with that talk.
- 1:22:54Yeah. So he decides he's going to
- 1:22:58check around the house. He sees the basement door
- 1:23:00propped open and he was Like, oh, do I have people in the
- 1:23:03basement? So he gets a little steak knife
- 1:23:06and then when he gets down there, he finds the rope in the
- 1:23:08wall, he finds the room and he goes, oh my God, and then I cuts
- 1:23:12to him. Googling, can you count it room
- 1:23:17as living area in your house extra room and basement?
- 1:23:22All right, I got it written down here, can underground rooms be
- 1:23:25listed as square footage and like it's just like a fucking
- 1:23:29amazing cut. That's like some good comedy
- 1:23:30injected, right? Like Him like reading the
- 1:23:33results, he's like not usually can't usually.
- 1:23:35Okay cool. Yeah, gross living area.
- 1:23:38Okay okay. Yeah, bitch.
- 1:23:40And then he gets his tape measure, which has to be like, a
- 1:23:43professional like construction worker tape measure because it's
- 1:23:47got, I feel like so much tape to it if somebody actually had a
- 1:23:51tape measure with this much tape to measure.
- 1:23:54It would be like, as big as their head, nice.
- 1:23:57It wouldn't fit in their Palm, but he takes it down and he's
- 1:24:01measuring Out the room and then he notices the extra door down
- 1:24:04there. It's so funny, like him down
- 1:24:06there. He is trying to calculate the
- 1:24:08square footage. He's not reading any of these
- 1:24:10numbers down. Even best case scenario.
- 1:24:12He's not going to remember exactly how much it is.
- 1:24:14Oh yeah. He's in like the fucking room,
- 1:24:16by the way, with the camera and the buck in the bed and he's
- 1:24:18like measuring around everything, he sits on the bed.
- 1:24:20He's like yeah she's like that's it that's the that's all that
- 1:24:24you get from that room right there.
- 1:24:26And then he notices the other room that leads further down and
- 1:24:28he's like, oh, hell yeah. And then he goes.
- 1:24:31Further down sees the cages and he's like, oh, hell yeah.
- 1:24:35And he keeps measuring the whole room down there because that's
- 1:24:37another room, and then as he goes a little bit further,
- 1:24:41there's another room that has like a purple light coming from
- 1:24:43it and some sound mmm-hmm. So he goes in there and he sees
- 1:24:48this old TV playing a video of breastfeeding and stress.
- 1:24:53It's like a breastfeeding instructional video.
- 1:24:55Yeah. And the tape measure snaps at
- 1:24:58that moment. AJ panics runs and he falls into
- 1:25:02this pit. Where test is also there.
- 1:25:04Yeah. Because it's like you can hear
- 1:25:06the mother out there to just kind of.
- 1:25:08Yeah. And now it's time for Richard
- 1:25:12break flashback. Yes.
- 1:25:15Another kind of cool thing about this by the way around.
- 1:25:18So what it does here, the aspect ratio of the movie switches to,
- 1:25:22what it would have been back in the 80s.
- 1:25:24Oh cool. Yeah.
- 1:25:25Like you notice it I guess it's kind of like puts you back in
- 1:25:27the like immersed as you I guess.
- 1:25:30Kind of, but it's a very unusual way of filming here.
- 1:25:34I like it kind of like I don't know, kind of makes you feel
- 1:25:38differently because I feel like we're watching a video game play
- 1:25:40out here because I told you it's like Grand Theft Auto.
- 1:25:43We're like it's fixed on Richard breaks back as he's walking
- 1:25:47around. Yeah, I guess I could
- 1:25:49controlling a character in the video game so he goes to the
- 1:25:52store and he's asking for baby supplies and This Woman's like
- 1:25:56asking questions like oh where are you going to have the birth?
- 1:26:00Then he goes home birth and he goes, oh, I'm sure you have a
- 1:26:02midwife, he goes. Nope, it's just me.
- 1:26:04So she just like she gives him. This breastfeeding video, latex
- 1:26:07gloves, plastic sheets diapers, and then he's leaving, as he's
- 1:26:12getting into his car. His eyes lock on this woman and
- 1:26:15this yellow dress and he follows her back to her house.
- 1:26:18He Parks down the street and pulls out a jumpsuit.
- 1:26:22With the name Carl on it. Goes up to the door.
- 1:26:26Says he is with DWP. There's been some outages.
- 1:26:29Can I check Check your water situation and she's like oh yeah
- 1:26:32sure he's wearing the jumpsuit why wouldn't she you know she's
- 1:26:35like okay yeah sure yeah so he goes into the bathroom he runs
- 1:26:39the water for a second and unlocks the bathroom door and
- 1:26:42that's our the bathroom window. And that's all you need to know
- 1:26:44what his MO is. Oh yeah, I love that.
- 1:26:47We get this tiny little bit and that's it, you know, exactly
- 1:26:50what happens from here. Yeah.
- 1:26:52It doesn't explain anything more, but I follow them back
- 1:26:55home and as he's walking back, and he's still wearing the
- 1:26:57jumpsuit, this is Carl. And his name is Frank and his
- 1:27:01neighbors like, hey, Frank and he's like, hey just want to let
- 1:27:05you know, there's Amadeus on and the yard and he's like why did
- 1:27:08what's right? What are you?
- 1:27:09Why are you? Why are you talking to me?
- 1:27:12I don't like you. Like they, these two people
- 1:27:15would not interact. He said yeah, the neighborhood
- 1:27:18is going to shit. We're worried if we don't sell.
- 1:27:20Now we won't be able to sell year from now.
- 1:27:23Yeah. He's like okay.
- 1:27:24Fucking get out of here, then it's like, I'm staying.
- 1:27:26Yeah. And he goes into his house and
- 1:27:28then opens up the basement door and you Here's some woman
- 1:27:31screaming and then close cut back to Tess and AJ in the
- 1:27:37little seller in the basement. Yeah.
- 1:27:40And so she's telling him to stay calm because if he gets upset
- 1:27:44she gets upset. And then the mother comes and
- 1:27:47tries to give them a bottle and she's telling him to drink.
- 1:27:49She's like she just wants you to be her baby.
- 1:27:51Just like let her take care of you and she takes a drink.
- 1:27:54And I think this is again coming back to the difference between
- 1:27:56the way men and women are socialized.
- 1:27:59Tess has learned that sometimes you do.
- 1:28:01What you have to do in the moment to stay alive and
- 1:28:04sometimes that involves complying.
- 1:28:06Yeah, which is probably ding. Ding, ding parallels here what
- 1:28:11Megan was doing with AJ. Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 1:28:14Yeah. Like he's yeah, he's kind of
- 1:28:17experiencing the same thing that he put her through.
- 1:28:20She's like, forcing the baby bottle down through the cage and
- 1:28:24he won't take it. So she opens up the little cover
- 1:28:28to this pit. Jumps in and takes them and she
- 1:28:32doesn't put the cover back. So, test takes the moment to
- 1:28:35escape and she's walking through the tunnel and she crosses by
- 1:28:42the door, the room where the instructional video is, she's
- 1:28:46basically like the mother is taking AJ and there is like,
- 1:28:49hey, this is me trying to breastfeed you, you know?
- 1:28:52And she actually tries to and props to test, well, she Could
- 1:28:59have had an opportunity to save and there, but I think she
- 1:29:02realized her best opportunity was to continue going.
- 1:29:05Go up top, get help and come back for yes, because she knows
- 1:29:09that if he complies for a little bit, she'll like he'll still be
- 1:29:12alive. Yeah, so she goes back out
- 1:29:14there, the basement doors, unfortunately closed.
- 1:29:17Yes, but she goes to the window and she breaks through it
- 1:29:21because the she has accidentally triggered, the tape measure.
- 1:29:24So now the mother knows she's leaving.
- 1:29:25She's panicking. If she breaks through the
- 1:29:27window, Andre the homeless man that was After her earlier comes
- 1:29:31up helps her out and he's explaining the whole situation
- 1:29:34is like she will come out at night.
- 1:29:35You need to be gone before then she goes there.
- 1:29:37Somebody else down, there he goes.
- 1:29:38Don't worry about him. He's already dead.
- 1:29:39Yeah. By the way you could have
- 1:29:41actually told me this. Yeah, a long time ago when we
- 1:29:45were actually direct understand how you're not screaming at me
- 1:29:47now and I hear what you're saying.
- 1:29:49Do you understand this? Yeah, he's like a human
- 1:29:51interaction here. Thank you so much.
- 1:29:54So test just decides to walk. She gets to a gas station or
- 1:29:58their stories kind of go back and and forth a little bit.
- 1:30:00So I'm just going to kind of describe test and then I'm going
- 1:30:02to scribe AJ. Yeah, so she walks down to a gas
- 1:30:05station and she calls the cops and the cops are very dismissive
- 1:30:09of her. But she was like, I haven't held
- 1:30:10prisoner for. I don't know how long there's
- 1:30:12somebody else down there and so the cops are kind of humoring
- 1:30:16her but it's clear they're not taking her seriously.
- 1:30:18They're getting other calls on the radio.
- 1:30:20I think that she's like a crackhead or something like
- 1:30:22somebody. I mean, she's in a bad part of
- 1:30:23town, she's looking rough, they think that she's like a homeless
- 1:30:26person most likely and them, you know, they're like, oh, Fine.
- 1:30:30We'll go with you. And if all doesn't have a key to
- 1:30:33the house or her ID or her ID, like she's got nothing to prove
- 1:30:37anything of what they're saying. He's like, the only thing I can
- 1:30:40see is that you busted. This window is the only crime I
- 1:30:42see here. There's nobody in the house.
- 1:30:44The window is busted out words detection?
- 1:30:48Oh yeah. The grass the glass from the
- 1:30:50window is all on the yard out front of the house instead of in
- 1:30:54the basement. Yeah so yeah maybe she busted
- 1:30:57the window but she did it from inside.
- 1:30:59I'd yeah. And then the cops get a call.
- 1:31:02I was like, hey, there's like a shootout going on over here and
- 1:31:04the fucking cop just rolls his eyes.
- 1:31:06Like, that's how jaded these motherfuckers are.
- 1:31:08She's like, okay, I guess I'll go do my job and then they get
- 1:31:12back in the car. And she's like, freaking out
- 1:31:15because they're completely blowing her off.
- 1:31:17And they like Mean, Mug. Her as they're driving off to,
- 1:31:20like you fucking piece of shit and it's like these guys fucking
- 1:31:23suck. Yeah, these are the words like
- 1:31:25shitty cops. In horror.
- 1:31:26Movies are kind of a normal thing, but Guys are just fucking
- 1:31:31bad. It's kind of gross because like
- 1:31:34this is almost kind of feels like a realistic depiction to of
- 1:31:36how people can be treated. Sometimes it's the exact
- 1:31:40opposite of like giving the benefit of the doubt, they're
- 1:31:43seeing the worst case scenario and they are not doing anything
- 1:31:46about it. Yeah.
- 1:31:47We're the exact moral opposite of test.
- 1:31:50Exactly. Yeah.
- 1:31:51So meanwhile AJ downstairs, has gotten away from the mother and
- 1:31:55is following this line down the hall and he gets to the point
- 1:31:58where she won't even Follow him. So he gets into this room.
- 1:32:01Richard break. Is there somehow still alive?
- 1:32:05Barely it seems. Yeah, he's just sitting laying
- 1:32:07in a bed and he can't even speak.
- 1:32:10It doesn't seem and he's just like, yeah, he's on his last leg
- 1:32:14and so I just like, yeah, I don't know what's happening out
- 1:32:17there but don't worry. I'm gonna get out of here.
- 1:32:19I'm going to call the cops. They'll be swarm in this place
- 1:32:22and Frank is like oh shit. So he is digging out his gun
- 1:32:26because he knows what cops swarming.
- 1:32:27The place is going to mean for him.
- 1:32:28He should fuck. No, the cops aren't going to
- 1:32:30come. Yeah.
- 1:32:31Like they were literally just here yet.
- 1:32:33Hey, did not care. So they just kind of looking
- 1:32:37around trying to figure out, you know, where to go from here.
- 1:32:41What resources, he has available.
- 1:32:42He pops in a VHS of one of Frank's victims.
- 1:32:46It says gas station redhead because like he's got a bunch of
- 1:32:50VHS tapes that are also around there and they're all peoples
- 1:32:53names. This one doesn't have a name.
- 1:32:55Yeah, it's either names or descriptors.
- 1:32:56Yes. Oh yeah, he pushes it into the
- 1:32:59VCR player and then he's watching it.
- 1:33:01We don't get to see what it is, but he has a horrified reaction.
- 1:33:04He's like, what the fuck is wrong with you?
- 1:33:06Why would you do that to somebody?
- 1:33:08And meanwhile, while all that's been going down, Richard break
- 1:33:11is reached into the drawer of his bedside table or drawer.
- 1:33:16And pulls out a gun, just a little crazy.
- 1:33:20He's about to shoot him, but yeah, you just shoots himself.
- 1:33:23So now, AJ has a gun. Yeah.
- 1:33:24So he takes the gun and his phone with the light and he goes
- 1:33:28walking down the hall. Upstairs test has broken another
- 1:33:32window. Gotten into the house, grabbed
- 1:33:35her keys and she gets into her car.
- 1:33:38The mother runs out at this point and test just runs into
- 1:33:42her and the house. Yes.
- 1:33:46Then she does not face. Yeah, I mean, she stopped moving
- 1:33:49but it doesn't seem like she's dead.
- 1:33:52So Tesco's downstairs, and she's looking for AJ and the second
- 1:33:56age I see is movement even though test is probably like A
- 1:33:59full six inches shorter than the mother.
- 1:34:01He shoots her. Yeah, I don't know man.
- 1:34:06Like I, If I were in his situation, I don't know if I
- 1:34:09would be, I would be on edge. I don't think anybody would
- 1:34:13willingly go down there, but then again, he doesn't really
- 1:34:15know tests, but he shoots her and he feels bad about, he tries
- 1:34:21to like get her up and he helps her out of the house.
- 1:34:24She's resin. We still.
- 1:34:25Okay, it should. Yeah, it's a gut shot.
- 1:34:28It doesn't feel good, but Not going to immediately kill her.
- 1:34:31Yeah so they scream like a little revolver so yeah, they're
- 1:34:35back outside the mother's missing and they he doesn't have
- 1:34:40the keys to his car because for some reason, he brought his car
- 1:34:44keys into the basement. When he was measuring it I don't
- 1:34:47under I mean unless he just forgot them in his pants and
- 1:34:50like, they just fell out. We don't really see what
- 1:34:52happened there. That's just kind of like I don't
- 1:34:54know. They're just like in his car
- 1:34:56keys are gone. Yeah, it's just he know.
- 1:34:57He says he dropped him in the tunnel.
- 1:34:59Okay well there it is. Yeah it just kind of feel like a
- 1:35:02scripting. Oh and by the way I guess
- 1:35:04they're gone now you know? But it has like okay I know a
- 1:35:07place we can go, she directs them to the water tower which is
- 1:35:10where Andre says he stays at night and it is that would be
- 1:35:13safe enough. Did he tell her that before?
- 1:35:16Okay, I couldn't remember I can I was like how the fuck does she
- 1:35:19know where he is. So while they're in there, he
- 1:35:22gives the background on the mother and Frank and says
- 1:35:24basically Frank would have ducked.
- 1:35:25These women assault them Have kids with them and then have
- 1:35:30kids with the kids. Yeah.
- 1:35:32It's all been like, over a span of 40 years.
- 1:35:34Yeah, it's really fucked up and we get a moment here with AJ and
- 1:35:42it's like, almost as if he's trying to have a change of
- 1:35:45characters, like, because Andre is like, oh, did she do that to
- 1:35:49you and Tess is like, what was that is him actually, that did
- 1:35:54it. He's like, you know what, maybe
- 1:35:56I'm not a bad guy, maybe I'm just a good guy that did a bad
- 1:35:58thing I'm like, nah. Dude you're kind of a piece of
- 1:36:01shit like he's having a moral quandary.
- 1:36:03He's like maybe realizing that he's not this infallible person.
- 1:36:08That he's been acting like he is.
- 1:36:10Yeah. And then the mother burst in the
- 1:36:14oh, yeah. Like whenever they're like, by
- 1:36:16the way, like are we safe? Here is like, yeah, I've been
- 1:36:18living here for 15 years. She's never been here as he says
- 1:36:21that she's very, very Samuel. L Jackson, a deep blue sea.
- 1:36:25Oh yeah, very nice. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:36:28So she bursts in it. Those Andre so they yeah they go
- 1:36:32running. They climb up the water tower
- 1:36:35they have okay before they got in there by going through the
- 1:36:39fence there's like a cut in the fence and they go through there.
- 1:36:42It could have gone through that again here, they knew where it
- 1:36:44was. They went through it themselves.
- 1:36:47Andre was the one that lifted it up and help them through.
- 1:36:49I don't think they knew exactly where it was and they were
- 1:36:51panicking. Okay, I've got another solution.
- 1:36:53Okay. They can't climb the fence
- 1:36:54because it's Barbed wired. I say get up to The water tower
- 1:37:00as high as you can, that isn't going to be fatal for you to
- 1:37:03jump and then get on the rail and then jump over the fence.
- 1:37:09It's either that we're faced. The mother.
- 1:37:11I don't know, pick your poison. That's highly far distance.
- 1:37:14To jump, know if you get like, up a little bit.
- 1:37:18I think that the way it's laid out, I was looking at it, I
- 1:37:20think you could queer it pretty easily without actually doing
- 1:37:23any damage to you. I don't like tests could have
- 1:37:25test is probably fucked. Yeah, ends up happening.
- 1:37:29Is they climb the water tower and test is telling AJ to use
- 1:37:32the gun, he panics and drops it. And then he's like, She's going
- 1:37:38to keep coming for us, no matter what.
- 1:37:41I can still get away, you're going to do to slow down and
- 1:37:43then he drags tested out to the water tower and says, come get
- 1:37:46your baby and throws her. And if you didn't feel bad
- 1:37:49enough that the mother like The mother is a product of her
- 1:37:56upbringing and literally in a situation where she doesn't know
- 1:37:59any better. In many ways is also a victim
- 1:38:02herself, not that she's not doing bad things to people now
- 1:38:05that she's not murdering them. You're kidnapping him or
- 1:38:07anything her only experiences have been with Frank Richard
- 1:38:11previous character in like the videotapes that she's seen from
- 1:38:15him and like the breastfeeding video.
- 1:38:17So all she knows is violence and like breastfeeding.
- 1:38:20Yeah. And she Is distraught at test
- 1:38:24being thrown and Dives after her.
- 1:38:26Yeah. And just to break her fall.
- 1:38:29Yes, Justin Wong. Don't know.
- 1:38:32I keep calling him just annoying, but he goes with down
- 1:38:33there to check on her and he's like, you know, like I didn't
- 1:38:37like I didn't have any other option, you just kind of like
- 1:38:39slowest. Yeah.
- 1:38:41He's just lying, like changing the course of everything.
- 1:38:44I just trying to gas lighter hoping that she's got like some
- 1:38:47sort of a head injury and he can convince her that he didn't
- 1:38:49throw her. Yeah.
- 1:38:51So what happens is, The mother is still alive.
- 1:38:54So she grabs Jay. Jay, Jay because he tried to
- 1:38:58kill her baby and gouges his fucking eyes out and rips his
- 1:39:03head apart and rips his head apart.
- 1:39:05Yeah, very gnarly, I love the and then Tess is still laying on
- 1:39:10the ground. The mother tries to take care of
- 1:39:12her and does this thing where she kisses her finger and then
- 1:39:16like oops her forehead? You know, like a little sweet
- 1:39:18thing but Tess has the gun. She knows what she's got to do.
- 1:39:23She's sticks it to the mother's head and boom.
- 1:39:26We get credits credits to be my baby poof.
- 1:39:30I fucking love how this movie ends.
- 1:39:32It's like a fucking exclamation mark right there.
- 1:39:35You don't get like the wind down like the cool down.
- 1:39:37Like you know, you don't get any like back.
- 1:39:39Like just anything afterwards. I just like how it just stops
- 1:39:42there. It's a good place to stop it.
- 1:39:44And yeah, that's the fucking movie.
- 1:39:47I'm keeping out of ten out of ten.
- 1:39:49I have nothing. I would change about it, I
- 1:39:51agree. Yeah, fucking two notes.
- 1:39:52In this movie is amazing. I love it so much.
- 1:39:56What did Talia think of this one?
- 1:39:59Well, Talia had a little pillow tantrum at the beginning.
- 1:40:05She laid down through most of it and then with 31 minutes left
- 1:40:08decided she needed to go out. So she was a little bit all over
- 1:40:11the place with it. She have her sweep.
- 1:40:14No, that was after. Okay, I think that Talia cause
- 1:40:17she's got her babies that she likes to take care of by chewing
- 1:40:21open and also removing the eyes from.
- 1:40:24So I think Talia greatly Sympathize with the mother and
- 1:40:27we've also just show her fucked up shit to with horror movies,
- 1:40:30kind of like Richard breaks character does.
- 1:40:33So I think we're going to call this an 8 for Talia.
- 1:40:36Yeah I think she liked it because she thinks it's great.
- 1:40:39Yeah, and Zoe did watch. Yes.
- 1:40:42She went from my lap to the dog bed to my lap.
- 1:40:47Actually the whole family was invested in this one.
- 1:40:49Scout came down for this one, too.
- 1:40:50Scott was very into it. Yeah, everybody liked this movie
- 1:40:54that should be like on. On the, that should be the title
- 1:40:57card. Your cats will like this movie
- 1:41:00fun for the whole family tagline.
- 1:41:04Dude, that's the tagline fun for the whole family, perfect?
- 1:41:08Okay. All right.
- 1:41:11Who did you relate to? Tess, did you because I get she
- 1:41:18was you I think that you would have done things a lot
- 1:41:21different. I definitely would have done
- 1:41:22things differently, but she did a lot of really smart things to
- 1:41:24ya. So out of all of them, yeah,
- 1:41:27she's the one I related to the most.
- 1:41:29Yeah, I think I would relate to her too.
- 1:41:32Because like, I mean, I don't think Keith or Bill scarce
- 1:41:35cards. Character is really a bad guy.
- 1:41:37Maybe he is because like at the end there is kind of
- 1:41:39questionable about why? The fuck he didn't really care
- 1:41:41about that. At room or why he wasn't really
- 1:41:44taking anything seriously. He could have been bad but Tess
- 1:41:48she was just like she was a good person.
- 1:41:50She's just wanted to like, actually she always went back
- 1:41:54for people. Yeah.
- 1:41:55She don't know, she just wanted to actually do good.
- 1:41:59She wanted to be like an actual good thing in the world, so it
- 1:42:02sucks. But yeah, that's something
- 1:42:05better to relate to than anybody else in this movie, okay?
- 1:42:11Dream sequel, dream sequel. Well, everybody's dead in this
- 1:42:19movie. So I think we would have to do
- 1:42:22prequel. I would like to see, like kind
- 1:42:26of a prequel where it's Keith arriving and maybe he had a
- 1:42:31weird situation when he arrived and maybe he's not 100% a good
- 1:42:35guy to, that would be awesome. Actually like if we did find out
- 1:42:38that he is kind of fucked up and he Yeah, but we keep that
- 1:42:42ambiguity going for a lot of the movies.
- 1:42:44You don't really know. Like maybe he actually set up
- 1:42:48that room, like that's why they go at school.
- 1:42:52I come on down, like we can go check it out together like it's,
- 1:42:54you know, just a bucket, a camera in a bed, you know,
- 1:42:57sounds like a good time to me, that actually sounds like it
- 1:43:01could be interesting if you did something like that.
- 1:43:04Okay. Yes, a reviews.
- 1:43:06Yes. All right, obviously I went with
- 1:43:09a negative review for this one because we fucking love this
- 1:43:12movie. We've been very vocal about it
- 1:43:14since we've seen it. So I got a one-star one off of
- 1:43:17IMDb. Okay.
- 1:43:20It's titled I honestly can't believe people like this movie.
- 1:43:24What am I missing? The entire plot was so stupid
- 1:43:27main character books. The stay in a house in Detroit
- 1:43:30without Google mapping the area. Uh-huh.
- 1:43:34All the hotels and Detroit are booked because of the
- 1:43:36convention. Uh-huh.
- 1:43:37By the way, these are Hans Army. It's actually in the review.
- 1:43:41She leaves for Jeep outside all night and isn't completely
- 1:43:43vandalized. Uh-huh, she goes down.
- 1:43:46Dark hallway by herself. Uh-huh guy goes down.
- 1:43:50Completely dark and tunnel tunnel by himself with no
- 1:43:52flashlight. Uh-huh, old couple living for 40
- 1:43:55years in basement with no food supply.
- 1:43:57Uh-huh. Malnourished woman is super
- 1:44:00strong and can leap out of pit with Justin Long on her back.
- 1:44:05Cops completely. Ignore a woman who says she's
- 1:44:08she was held captive because they think she's a crackhead
- 1:44:11even though she's beautiful inarticulate.
- 1:44:13Uh-huh. Guy accidentally shoots girl
- 1:44:15even though his flashlight was shining on her.
- 1:44:17Uh-huh guy. Completely forgets.
- 1:44:20He has gun then fumbles it away. Uh-huh girl was thrown off water
- 1:44:24tower but super strong malnourished woman jumps after
- 1:44:27her point. Three seconds later and cushions
- 1:44:29her fall defying law of gravity. Uh-huh.
- 1:44:33So So we replace those aha's with dings, and you have the
- 1:44:38cinema sins of a sudden, oh, my God.
- 1:44:40You're right. I used to like CinemaSins when
- 1:44:43it was kind of like tongue-in-cheek, but now it's
- 1:44:45just like, hey, how obnoxious can we be about this movie?
- 1:44:48Yeah. Having to pick he.
- 1:44:49Can we be and, like, whatever Different Strokes for different
- 1:44:53folks and maybe there are some worthwhile things to talk about
- 1:44:55there, but I also feel like some of that was deliberately missing
- 1:44:59the point of the movie. Yeah.
- 1:45:01And like with anything like this, you kind of have to like
- 1:45:04Like, suspend your belief, I don't know.
- 1:45:07I just like, you have to fucking go along with the ride.
- 1:45:10Yeah. Mike, uh, that Gregor said,
- 1:45:13like, if you started thinking too hard about this stuff and
- 1:45:15like people actually behave the way they should, then there
- 1:45:17wouldn't be a movie. Yeah, I things played out how it
- 1:45:20should. Yeah, it's just it's not fun.
- 1:45:21That way. Just fucking have fun with a
- 1:45:23man. Yeah.
- 1:45:25Okay, listen to reviews. Okay.
- 1:45:28All right. So we have a decent amount
- 1:45:29today. We'll start off with our loan
- 1:45:32Twitter review. So we have a Kweli boobs.
- 1:45:36Okay. Says, loved it the first 30
- 1:45:39minutes had you going one way then?
- 1:45:40Bam. Mine fucks you back to the
- 1:45:42drawing board. Second half of the movie wasn't
- 1:45:44as good as the first half in my opinion.
- 1:45:46But Justin long did do a good job at playing a creepy dick
- 1:45:50that ending though. Fuck me whole movie was a wild
- 1:45:53ride. Yeah, I definitely agree.
- 1:45:56However, I think that it doesn't lose steam at all.
- 1:45:59I think the second half of the movie is still pretty strong.
- 1:46:03Okay, I think it's a A strong. It doesn't hold it back any
- 1:46:05personally. Yeah, I think I was a very
- 1:46:07needed tonal shift to keep it. Watchable.
- 1:46:10Yeah, I think so too, because like, otherwise, it just becomes
- 1:46:13like you're being beaten over the head with the tension and
- 1:46:16red. Yeah, which is nice sometimes
- 1:46:18but I feel like this made it a very balanced movie.
- 1:46:20Yeah. That right there gives you the
- 1:46:22whether you need. I mean we could have stuck in
- 1:46:24the basement but I think the movie would have suffered as a
- 1:46:27result. Okay?
- 1:46:29Over to Instagram. Cube saves says, weird sequel to
- 1:46:34Big Momma's House. I've never seen Big Momma's
- 1:46:37House. Yeah, I have no clue what the I
- 1:46:40don't understand that review. Sari Singh, the reference here,
- 1:46:44Robert Zone says, best of 2022. Brilliant creepy feels real.
- 1:46:49Yes, agreed. Yes.
- 1:46:51Taxidermy or yeah, Taxidermy potato says, really good. 9, out
- 1:46:56of 10. And then we have some people who
- 1:47:00actually elaborated on their thoughts here.
- 1:47:03So first off, we have Tucker says the movie where in Justin
- 1:47:09Wong gives his most Justin Wong performance in his long career
- 1:47:12of Justin longing. Perfectly mysterious tension
- 1:47:16building and grotesque and a little Richard break is always,
- 1:47:19welcome. And often.
- 1:47:21Maybe never drink Dairy again, okay?
- 1:47:24Like, you Yeah, I agree fucking just along is doing this shit in
- 1:47:30this movie. Just as he always says, Michael
- 1:47:34Lee. Howard says, wow, I've waited
- 1:47:37every trailer to this movie and glad I did Barbarian is a horror
- 1:47:41film, and all the sense in the world split into three acts.
- 1:47:45Each one filled with a different type of dread.
- 1:47:48I found myself holding my breath and wanting to yell at my
- 1:47:50screen. There are twists and turns and
- 1:47:52the left that left me seriously thinking about it for days.
- 1:47:56And after I watched it burn, Is full of the grossness.
- 1:47:59It is to be a human. Well acted with a great script.
- 1:48:03I give it a 10 out of 10. Nice.
- 1:48:06Yes. And the final one is Amber.
- 1:48:11Our Patriot, she says, I actually screamed once during
- 1:48:15this movie and squirmed wildly in suspense for a huge part of
- 1:48:18it, I feel like it's well told because they managed to tell the
- 1:48:22story in a way that also didn't over explain it in most Parts.
- 1:48:26The way they showed the man following the woman and telling
- 1:48:28a lie to unlock her window and then showed her dress in the
- 1:48:32dungeon gave me an increasingly 66 sinking filling the character
- 1:48:37development of the main character from make everyone
- 1:48:39else feels comfortable to know. I want to live, Phil's
- 1:48:42effective. And so frustrating.
- 1:48:45The Real Horror in this movie was being a woman existing
- 1:48:48period in so many ways and the tragedy and sadness of the main
- 1:48:52character knowing that the monster she was killing him.
- 1:48:54The end was really just a mentally ill product of her own
- 1:48:57Bringing was next, fucking level early and Next Level fucked up,
- 1:49:02even without reading into all of those things, I feel like this
- 1:49:05movie was effective. It was a 10 out of 10 for me.
- 1:49:07It was a really well thought out of you right there.
- 1:49:09I agree. That's a great Point.
- 1:49:11Yes, it's like captured everything I love about this
- 1:49:13movie. All right, so that's it for my
- 1:49:17reviews and that is it for this episode.
- 1:49:19Yeah so like I said this weekend will be a to be or not to be.
- 1:49:23And next week is my birthday week.
- 1:49:26Yeah. So we're Are going to watch 2017
- 1:49:31s Truth or Dare. This is not the Lucy Hale one.
- 1:49:34That's 2018 problem. This is sci-fi made-for-tv,
- 1:49:39personally, I think it's better. So currently maybe you can watch
- 1:49:45it on to be, I don't know. It's a little bit weird the way
- 1:49:47this one pops up when you try to look at where to watch it.
- 1:49:50Pretty sure. It's also available on YouTube
- 1:49:52to watch. Worried.
- 1:49:57Like if people are actively trying to take it down and take
- 1:50:00advantage of it, you can also stream it.
- 1:50:01If you have a premium subscription to Hulu YouTube TV
- 1:50:04or sling TV, I think there's sci-fi or you can rent it from
- 1:50:08Redbox Google play Voodoo or prime, okay cool.
- 1:50:12And it's one that I have a lot of love for and I'm really
- 1:50:15excited to talk about. Yeah, Jesse's birthday movie.
- 1:50:19Okay. Well we already did our social
- 1:50:21media and everything in the beginning of the episode.
- 1:50:24So I think it's time for us to sign off.
- 1:50:26Alright. Until next, I'm I
- 1:50:40You look like you're about to say something sneeze.
- 1:50:43Your 10 a.m. okay.
