- 1:02So what do you I mean Asian cowboy, what do?
- 1:08You all know. You're like the only one that I
- 1:11know. Oh, I guess I, I don't like, I
- 1:19feel special about it because everybody kind of recognizes
- 1:23that and my family kind of thinks I'm crazy about it.
- 1:29Oh really? You know, getting all horses,
- 1:30doing all this stuff, you know, like, why are you doing that,
- 1:33doing this, doing whatever. I was like, no, I love this.
- 1:37I love what I'm doing. I'll keep going.
- 1:39I'll fucking die on a horse versus there.
- 1:43We are. So what is your nationality
- 1:46then? Vietnamese, Chinese and Laotian.
- 1:52Laotian. OK, so I was an assy because I
- 1:54know we've talked about like Laos, right?
- 1:57That's Laos. And I always thought like OK,
- 1:59Americans are called Americans. And I was thinking like, what do
- 2:03I call people from Laos like Laotians or But it's Laotians.
- 2:08Laotians, Laotians. It's the same thing really.
- 2:11It's just the way through. Are you first generation
- 2:14American or are you from? Where are you from?
- 2:19I was born and raised in Arizona.
- 2:21OK, but so depending on what side, my family, technically I'm
- 2:26the first generation on my dad's side.
- 2:28OK. Second generation on my mom's
- 2:30side, so she was born here and then they kidding me?
- 2:35OK, awesome. So what brought?
- 2:37So is your dad that came to the States then, right?
- 2:39Yeah, he, he had a rough upbringing, so it kind of he had
- 2:46the opportunity to come over here and took it.
- 2:52What my mom did, all that had me had my brother.
- 2:56And where's his? History.
- 2:57Now he's got a cowboy for a son. Oh yeah, that that that was a
- 3:01little. Does he brag?
- 3:02Do do you think he brags like, hey man, my son, hey.
- 3:06No, my family kind of not, not my dad, but everybody else is
- 3:13like, oh, that's cool, you know, when are you going to get out of
- 3:16it? Yeah, I'm like, I don't think.
- 3:18So this is who I am. This is This is forever.
- 3:21Cornbread. I'll do this.
- 3:23The rest? Die on a horse.
- 3:24Yeah, So what? Like, obviously your family's
- 3:27not into it. How?
- 3:28Like how did you get into this lifestyle?
- 3:31It was mostly, so I grew up around mostly a white high
- 3:38school school education, so I kind of wanted to fit in.
- 3:42So I started wearing boots, did that deal, and then, oh, what's
- 3:49it? I started working at a
- 3:52distribution center out in What the hell?
- 3:54And one of my coworkers knows that I was wearing bases like,
- 3:58oh, have you ever ridden the horse?
- 4:00No, they're like, oh, my stepdad trains horses.
- 4:04You go on, get on one of his Brooklyn.
- 4:05So I was like, yeah, I'll try it after that.
- 4:08How old were you? 2021.
- 4:12Oh, wow, So this is relatively new, Yeah.
- 4:16OK, I kind of, I took all of it to heart.
- 4:19So it was, I fell in love with it.
- 4:21I did that. I rode the horses for him for
- 4:26two years for free after I got off work just to kind of hone my
- 4:31skills trying to do that, trying to catch up.
- 4:35And after that, it was now I started, then I started actually
- 4:42riding for him, got into that deal.
- 4:47He was a what was it? He's a Co starter.
- 4:51He was big in Waddell for it. He had some raining horses that
- 4:56went big. He had some barrel horses.
- 5:00He was mostly known for putting that foundation on him.
- 5:03Oh, OK. Dad broke, didn't want to.
- 5:05No scare, no nothing. True blue fucking arena horses.
- 5:10Performance horses, yeah. And, and those were the horses
- 5:13you were riding. Those were in the beginning,
- 5:16yeah. It was like, hey, I got this
- 5:18one. You want to ride it?
- 5:20Were you just riding them to leg them up or were you doing any
- 5:23sort of training or anything like that at?
- 5:25This point I was just kind of just riding, trying to learn.
- 5:28He just put miles on, just trying to get that experience.
- 5:32And in the meantime, if I ask questions, I'd ask.
- 5:38And it was like, hey, you're a good hand.
- 5:41You ride these horses, you don't care what you get on, Maybe I'll
- 5:45hire you. And after that, I work for him a
- 5:49year, year and a half and then just got into the whole cowboy
- 5:55deal with his Ferrier. He day works up north up in
- 6:01Williams for some big ranch. So he was like, hey, my buddy
- 6:07bailed on me. Want to want to come day work
- 6:09for four or five days. I was like, yeah, let's do it.
- 6:12So. What would you call day work?
- 6:15Day work is horseback, anything horseback, pushing, gathering,
- 6:20sorting, that's it. That's what I consider other
- 6:25people called day work, fence work, everything.
- 6:27But I what I'm used to is just let's get on a horseback, Let's
- 6:31find these cows, let's gather, let's do this, let's do that.
- 6:34It was our it was their fall. Their fall works.
- 6:40So it was just like we have to gather, sort whatever off, and
- 6:45then we just push them up to one impression.
- 6:48So I think the interesting part was what you said in the
- 6:51beginning is that I've worked for two years for free.
- 6:53Yeah, right. To learn the lifestyle.
- 6:56And there's a lot of people out there.
- 6:57I mean, we hear it all the time. You know, I want to live your
- 7:00life. I like, this is my dream life.
- 7:02And we're like, you don't realize what it takes to live
- 7:04that kind of lifestyle and the commitment and the effort that
- 7:06it takes. And like for somebody like
- 7:08yourself to want to learn to start cults and to work horses
- 7:11and to get into that lifestyle, like legit get into the
- 7:14lifestyle. You did it for free for two
- 7:17years risk. And, and let's be honest, like
- 7:19when you're getting on a quote, you're risking your life every
- 7:21time you jump on, you don't know what that sucker is going to do.
- 7:24You know, you may end up broken back or whatever it may be.
- 7:27We know a lot of people that that happens to.
- 7:29But I think those that are young and are listening to this need
- 7:32to understand that sometimes, you know, the life lesson is
- 7:35sometimes at your cost, right? That was your cost of two years.
- 7:40So it's a beautiful part of what you were saying and and what it
- 7:42takes to get into this. So were you working that two
- 7:45years that's all you were doing or did you have a nine to five
- 7:48job or? No, I had a regular nine to five
- 7:51job, so as soon as I get off, they only live like 5 miles away
- 7:55from where I work. So it was it was just easy and
- 8:00he just taught me the ropes. You know, it was like, oh,
- 8:04you're not going to get good at riding just by riding 11 horse.
- 8:07Sure. Ride multiple horses, ride
- 8:10multiple miles, do all that different saddles.
- 8:13I didn't. I don't.
- 8:14I didn't have a saddle until a year ago.
- 8:19On. My own so I just been using his
- 8:21saddles. And how old are you right now,
- 8:232424? So I I knew I was going to get
- 8:28somewhere when he started recommending me to get on just
- 8:32horses. It don't matter.
- 8:34Hey, I have a client. They might not.
- 8:38They don't think they could afford it.
- 8:39So why don't you hop on, see, give them your opinion.
- 8:42Yeah. Cool, because you can stick,
- 8:45yeah. Right Colts, I could stick
- 8:48pretty good, but the way he starts them most of the time,
- 8:51first ride, first, second ride, anyway, they weren't going to
- 8:55bug. So it was just that mentality
- 8:58of, oh, it might happen, it might not, but most of his
- 9:00horses didn't buck it all. Gotcha.
- 9:04Yeah, that's, that's a an amazing horse trainer if you're
- 9:10getting to the point where they're not bucking that fast.
- 9:12I mean, we just kind of started down that path of breaking
- 9:15horses at my place, you know, I mean, we have a three-year old
- 9:17there right now. We're bringing in a 1 1/2 year
- 9:19old this weekend. And my brother-in-law does it
- 9:22because I'm not, I'm too damn old to be jumping on these wild
- 9:24suckers, you know what I mean? But it's, it's cool to hear, you
- 9:27know, somebody like yourself, you're 24.
- 9:29You said you've been doing this for about four years.
- 9:31You put two years in of not getting paid right and
- 9:34essentially putting sweat equity in.
- 9:36But that's the part that that that I find fascinating is, is
- 9:39that you wanted it so bad. You were willing to work at 9:00
- 9:43to 5:00 and then go out after and then put all that sweat
- 9:46equity in to learn the process of breaking horses.
- 9:50And, you know, you think if you can get to the point where
- 9:53you're turning out raining horses and barrel horses like
- 9:55this guy does, you know, people don't understand how much money
- 9:59is in horses. It's hundreds and hundreds of
- 10:02thousands of dollars and millions of dollars.
- 10:04When you go to some of these events, you know, you get lucky
- 10:06and get a couple of really, really good horses that are
- 10:09young and, and get somebody like yourself that can turn them into
- 10:11something special. And you're sitting on a gold
- 10:13mine. Oh yeah, you know, but, well,
- 10:16you also have that risk of injury or, you know, where the
- 10:19horse just doesn't pan out the way you want, right?
- 10:21Yep, because you're because those horses are being bought
- 10:25for their blood like. Silent scene, basically just
- 10:28based off their bloodline. So they're like, oh, this horse
- 10:32they get, this horse they get, maybe they do, maybe they make
- 10:35something that would be worth it.
- 10:37So it's that gamble. Right.
- 10:39So most of the time it works, sometimes it doesn't, and then
- 10:43you just got to figure out how to get out of that hole.
- 10:46So as a kid there was no interest or no knowledge of
- 10:50cowboy and or or anything like that.
- 10:53I want to say no knowledge. I kind of, my family is a big
- 10:58outdoor family. We camped, we did all that.
- 11:01So every so often we'd be camping, then I'd see this big
- 11:04old herd of cows and stuff, you know, and then we'd see I'd see
- 11:09these guys on horses. I'm like, hey mom, hey dad,
- 11:12where are they? They're like, oh, there's these
- 11:14Cowboys, you know, you know, it doesn't matter.
- 11:17They kind of, you know, they kind of have me drive away from
- 11:21that type of deal, you know, like go to school, do this, do
- 11:24that. They do.
- 11:27So you trained horses or you work for free, right with the
- 11:33trainer, and then now you say you do some day work, sometimes
- 11:39not as much. Few and far between.
- 11:41Yeah, there's not as much, but you've done it.
- 11:43Yeah, right. What is the process of getting
- 11:47into that? Right, Because just learning how
- 11:50to ride a horse in it on its own is very difficult.
- 11:53But now you throw a rope, you throw different terrain, and you
- 11:58throw cattle. I think to for my experience, it
- 12:04was just the people I kind of knew.
- 12:07It was like the fair my farrier for that trainer was, he grew up
- 12:14doing this, you know, fucking cowboy rodeo did all that.
- 12:19And he was like, it's just the connections you kind of have to
- 12:23like, make. Yeah.
- 12:25And he, he saw what I could do with a horse.
- 12:27So he's like, maybe, maybe he could do something.
- 12:31Yeah, and I'm sure he probably asked around too.
- 12:33Not about your reputation and like who you are.
- 12:37No kind of he? He asked the horse Turner I was
- 12:42working for at the time. He's like, hey, is he a good
- 12:44hand? You know, does he, does he do
- 12:47what he's told? You know, yeah, he's like.
- 12:50And after that, I asked him was like, hey, can I come up with
- 12:53you this weekend? And he was like, hell yeah.
- 12:56Fucking keep on. Yeah, a lot of it's the circle
- 12:58you surround yourself with, right is you surround yourself
- 13:00with the right people that are going to help you get somewhere.
- 13:03And then if your character is what, you know, really continues
- 13:08to show through, people are going to vouch for you, right?
- 13:12But that's the other part of it is it's not just the sweat
- 13:15equity that you put into it. It's doing the right thing
- 13:17around the right people that are going to get you connected.
- 13:20It's like anything else, you know, whether it's business or
- 13:22professor or personal, you know, it's, it really is just the
- 13:27people that you surround yourself with.
- 13:29So what's next for you? Well, right now it's I'm trying
- 13:39to start my own horse right now. That's that's my big deal.
- 13:42What's that? I've always had to borrow a
- 13:45horse every time. You know, they were, oh, let me
- 13:49kind of borrow this horse for this or, or, you know, go on
- 13:52chart. I have to ask for this, ask for
- 13:55that. You know, it's just that
- 13:56reputation is like, oh, he's a good guy.
- 13:59He's gonna do it. And I'm like, sooner or later I
- 14:03had to buy the bullying and buy a horse.
- 14:05But you're not just starting any horse.
- 14:09Oh no, it's AI got a little yeah, a little 2 two 2 1/2 year
- 14:14old Mustang from. Nevada, it's the one that you're
- 14:17breaking in these videos, right? Yeah.
- 14:19Oh yeah. When you're in the bright yellow
- 14:21shirt and the round pen, Yeah, yeah.
- 14:23So it's a 2 year old Mustang from the rez.
- 14:27BLM, Nevada. So, well, I noticed the tattoo
- 14:30on its neck so I instantly knew it was a Mustang, but yeah.
- 14:33But that that's going good right now.
- 14:36He's getting, he's getting real almost every day.
- 14:41You know, I'll give him a break because he's some young.
- 14:43Yeah. And it's getting hot.
- 14:45Yeah, well, how's that process though?
- 14:46So you so you got the horse straight from where?
- 14:50I got him from AI, forgot what it was called.
- 14:55It's like some lady that takes like buys them and then just is
- 15:00it. Is it the lady in Cave Creek?
- 15:02Yeah, OK. Annie Mcdermade, or.
- 15:05Something OK, I don't, I don't, I don't know her name, but I've
- 15:07seen her name on the Facebook pages on the horse.
- 15:10She poses a lot. She's very much an advocate for.
- 15:15Yeah, she rescues them, right? And then she rescues, brings
- 15:17them down to the valley. Brings them down, yeah.
- 15:19And try to give them to get homes.
- 15:22Yeah. Yeah, because we've, I've looked
- 15:24into a couple of them. Yeah, Yeah, you can.
- 15:27Yeah, she's got some good horses.
- 15:31I just don't know that we want to break a bunch of Mustangs.
- 15:34They're wild. Well, what's the process like
- 15:37for you? So coming from just a regular
- 15:40Quarter Horse, I was used to getting them good on the ground
- 15:47work in like a week or two, being able to saddle, do all
- 15:51that, get on the saddle and do everything by like a month.
- 15:54Yeah, but well, it teaches you patience.
- 15:59With Mustangs, you kind of have to be a little different with
- 16:01them. So I don't, I didn't think I I
- 16:06started riding him about a month ago and I got him in January.
- 16:09OK. I kind of.
- 16:10So you put five months worth of groundwork into it.
- 16:13Just to get him used to everything, you know, Like turn
- 16:16him into an actual horse. I remember the videos that you
- 16:19sent me. There's a video of you in the
- 16:22stall with food in between your feet.
- 16:25Yeah, and you just have to sit there and wait for him to come
- 16:30to you, right? Yeah, he had to learn how to be
- 16:35with people, you know, So it was like, I get off right after work
- 16:39and it was, it was still winter time, so I was like, I'm not
- 16:43exhausted. So I was like, I was just here.
- 16:46If he comes up, he comes up. If not, OK, maybe tomorrow I
- 16:49might get a little closer. He might walk a little closer to
- 16:52me. And then by the end of it, like
- 16:56you have to show them that you kind of want that bond with it.
- 16:59Yeah. So.
- 17:00Gotta earn that trust, right? Earn that trust.
- 17:02You kind of have to build a friendship with it.
- 17:04Yeah. So I did that for a good month
- 17:08and a half and then those videos I sent you, they were all those
- 17:15saddling ones that took like another couple weeks just trying
- 17:19to get him used to me throwing pad on him.
- 17:22Yeah, saddle on him. Just everything was like I even
- 17:27for it being a 2 year old I was used to.
- 17:30Oh, he's ready. Halter broke.
- 17:31He knows how to leave. He knows how to do that.
- 17:33He knows how to lunch. Yeah, being a 2 year old, I had
- 17:37to learn patience. Very fast.
- 17:39Oh, I bet, man. So I wanted to get on him like
- 17:43monthly. I was like, why can't I just get
- 17:46on him? Like, you know, like it's just
- 17:48another horse. I can't do this.
- 17:51But that's crazy. See, and you talk about wanting
- 17:53to break 1. Dude, that's my dream.
- 17:56Dude, I know it is let's talk about when you got Oakley.
- 17:59You ready for this? So he wants to break his own
- 18:01Mustang, right So we get Oakley and we bring him to the bring
- 18:04him to the house. That horse is there for like a
- 18:06month and he's scared shitless of this horse will not get near
- 18:09her so he. Was this after the auction?
- 18:13Yeah, Oh yeah. So that horse stayed at my house
- 18:16for like a month and I'll never forget.
- 18:18He finally puts a saddle on her and he gets out there and he's
- 18:21like, no, I'm not getting up. I'm not getting up because she
- 18:22was getting kind of wonky. And I finally had had enough.
- 18:25Dude, I'm in shorts, I think my basketball shoes.
- 18:29And I was like, get out of the way.
- 18:30I'm going to get on her. And he's like, no, you're not.
- 18:32And I was like, that's why I jumped on her.
- 18:33And she kind of went, she went nuts.
- 18:35And he's like, are you going to get off?
- 18:36And I said fuck no. I said, if I get off right now,
- 18:39she's going to know she won. So I let her go ape shit.
- 18:43And I got off and I was like, all right, now you get on.
- 18:44I was like, I'm not getting on her and then the next day he got
- 18:48on and then she's been great. Well, yeah, well, that was after
- 18:51I took her to Logan's. No, yeah, you took her to
- 18:55Logan's after that. Well, that.
- 18:56Well, yeah, that's what I meant, yeah.
- 18:58After that, I took her to Logan, right then he just kind of set
- 19:00him or set her straight. Yeah.
- 19:03And I was like, all right, because I don't want.
- 19:06To listen, but you want to break a Mustang.
- 19:08Yeah, OK. Oh yeah.
- 19:09There's also the thing about Mustangs, you kind of, you have
- 19:12to kind of give all your time to it.
- 19:14I've spent days, yeah, on days, yeah, like I don't go home.
- 19:20I didn't go. I don't go home until like 11:30
- 19:23at night and I have to be up for work at like 5.
- 19:26So it was like that time, it was like 6 hours.
- 19:29I'm just chilling on my phone, you know, just landing.
- 19:33Figure me out, my man. Smells, yeah.
- 19:36All the noises. Well, that's why I haven't
- 19:39gotten 1 yet or like done it because I know I don't have the
- 19:41time. Yeah, and I don't have the
- 19:43knowledge to do that right now. I need to be a better writer
- 19:46before I could train a wild Mustang.
- 19:49There's a lot that I need to learn.
- 19:50I'm telling you, there's no chance I'm doing it.
- 19:52I'm gonna do it. No way I'm gonna do it.
- 19:54It takes you kind of have to put your like I said, you have to
- 19:58put your blood swing tears. And you have to put everything
- 20:00on hold. Oh, for sure.
- 20:01Like like you just said, you were spending hours just sitting
- 20:04there. You got kids, homie.
- 20:06I know I'm like, don't be out there.
- 20:08They'll be the first ones out there.
- 20:09Yeah, right. Hey, just don't drink on there.
- 20:12Strap him in. Oh, he'll.
- 20:14Be fine. Yeah, right.
- 20:15He can ride damn near anything. Yeah, no, it's cool to hear of
- 20:19somebody that has actually done it because I've always wondered
- 20:21what it was like. Right.
- 20:23Again, I'm not I'm, I'm not breaking horses no more, but it
- 20:26would be cool to see it done like from from scratch, you know
- 20:30the three-year old that we have out there.
- 20:32I think it had just some just some groundwork on it and now
- 20:37we're to the point where Trev's riding and loping it around the
- 20:40arena. We've had him for a couple
- 20:41months, but you know, going from something that had been in a
- 20:45stall and would lead and stuff like that too.
- 20:48But you were like straight off the Brez, right?
- 20:51Never had. Never had any, you know,
- 20:54anywhere. That's contact.
- 20:56Legit just, I messaged her. He's like, hey, this horse, I'll
- 21:00be there in the morning, let's do it.
- 21:02And she was like, OK, cool, I'll meet you in the morning.
- 21:05And then she she said something about like, yeah, I just
- 21:09brought, I just brought them back from Nevada.
- 21:12This BLM, like she really likes her cool minded.
- 21:15They're easy compared to what I'm used to.
- 21:20Yeah. So it was, yeah.
- 21:23Even just loading him in the trailer the first day it was it
- 21:27took me, it took his like 30 minutes just trying to slide him
- 21:30in there. Just.
- 21:31Get him used to. Him just trying to just get him
- 21:35back to the house, yeah. It was and hope he doesn't set
- 21:38back on you when he's in the trailer and.
- 21:40Oh, that we don't. So that's also the thing picking
- 21:46up a Mustang is no dividers, no halter.
- 21:51They're they're just freeloaded in there.
- 21:52Oh really? Oh.
- 21:53That's that makes sense. You tie them in and a wild
- 21:57horse. Yeah, I mean, they got 4 legs to
- 21:59stand, so they'll be all right. They figured it out.
- 22:01Yeah. For years.
- 22:03Yeah. Keep their belts.
- 22:05That's wild, I didn't know that. So Cowboy Day work, bronc
- 22:13riding. Yeah, right.
- 22:15So this weekend you're going up to the Williams Rodeo Night.
- 22:18Yeah, I'll be going up Saturday just for the day, hang out with
- 22:24family and then just hopefully I make some money, make they pay
- 22:31my beer tab for that night. There you go.
- 22:34Now you're going to ride for the next basically 8 weeks, right?
- 22:37Is it about 8 weeks long? How is that?
- 22:39How? How is OK?
- 22:40So why? Why are you doing this?
- 22:43It was mostly so I got, I kind of got hooked on to it before I
- 22:49was riding some a horse at the horse trainers and you know,
- 22:59arena horses, they're kind of spooked out anything outside of
- 23:02the arena. So they're like, we had some
- 23:05lady on the bicycle just in the back of the evening that just
- 23:07pop out. He just started.
- 23:08He looked and just freaked out and just started bucking like
- 23:12some shit. They crow hot, you know, just in
- 23:15a circle. But after that, my heart was
- 23:17racing, hands shaking. I was like that.
- 23:21Was fun. So I just asked everybody.
- 23:25He's like, hey, you know anyone that bucks horses down here?
- 23:28No. OK, then I got on my first one
- 23:34May. No, I got on my first one April
- 23:39last year all the way in Needles, CA.
- 23:41It was a GCPRA sanctioned rodeo and they have Ranch Bronx.
- 23:46I was like, that's the only place I'll do it because I don't
- 23:49have a saddle, a Saddle Bronx saddle.
- 23:51So I'm like, I'll just use my fucking working saddle.
- 23:55After that, I fell in love with it was it was just that
- 23:59adrenaline rush. Yeah.
- 24:01And to be honest, will I ever quit?
- 24:07Well, my bones break, probably, but.
- 24:09No Any interest in bucking bulls?
- 24:11Are we sticking to just Bronx? Here's my thing about bulls.
- 24:14I Everybody else, I knew that buck bulls, they loved it, but
- 24:23after they got off with it, they're like, I wish I didn't do
- 24:26it. Yeah, You know, like even if
- 24:31Schaefer, Ty Schaefer, he was that horseshoe here for the
- 24:35horse trainer and he was getting on bucking bulls and all his
- 24:40friends were rodeoing bareback Sal bron bulls.
- 24:44And he was like, if I did it over again I would stuck to it.
- 24:48Just bronze. That was the thing I plus I
- 24:51don't outside of a rodeo, do you ever see someone just randomly
- 24:56get on bulls and just bucking them versus, you know, a horse
- 24:59that bugs? That's my deal.
- 25:01It's like you can use the same fundamentals in a bucking horse
- 25:05versus Oh my God, relearned you got learn new stuff for a bull.
- 25:10Yeah, I was like, I think it's more cowboy.
- 25:12To get on a bucking horse. See, I think it'd be cool to see
- 25:15Drake get on a mini bronc. Yeah, Yeah, we've, we've
- 25:18because. That's what the four O says.
- 25:19Yeah. Yeah, that'd be fun to watch.
- 25:23I think he could stick to that pretty good.
- 25:26Probably. Yeah.
- 25:27Well, because they got a handle. And they run more.
- 25:29Yeah, yeah. No, I've seen some of those buck
- 25:32hard for no reason. I was like, they're tiny.
- 25:35They won't do anything. Like I was riding this horse for
- 25:41a lady and her kid got into bareback movies and it was like
- 25:46every video I see her post is like, you know, it was like
- 25:51craw, hop, crawl, run around. I'm like, cool, she covers and
- 25:54then I see the one where she's like gets bucked off and I'm
- 25:59like, for a horse being that small, I couldn't imagine.
- 26:04Well, that was Drake's last ride in mini bowls.
- 26:07He had like the ride of the year as far as the mount, right?
- 26:12Coming out of the chute. The the bull, the mini bowl
- 26:15could not have been a better a better seat and he came out and
- 26:20perfect jumps and everything was good and it was a short ride.
- 26:24But that was that was rider, rider performance, because that
- 26:30bull was giving Jesus take the wheel He did.
- 26:32Oh, wasn't that video I saw? Where he takes his hands off.
- 26:35Hands were up in the air. I'm like, what in the world?
- 26:38Else is the same thing. We're like, what are you doing?
- 26:41Well what it was is like he got so he he gets hooked on these
- 26:46bull riding videos. Like JB.
- 26:49JB Mooney and all that, right and then?
- 26:50He went down a whole nother pipeline.
- 26:52Of them switched on it, right, because it was probably his last
- 26:55name. And starts watching the Mexican
- 26:58bull riders where they just put their spurt, they jab their
- 27:01skiers and they just let their hands go.
- 27:04And so he just let his hands go. Yeah.
- 27:07And it's we all looked at each other like out the shoot.
- 27:10We are all super pumped. You're like, this is the best
- 27:13out of the shoot bull he's had. And then all of a sudden he
- 27:16goes, Jesus, take the wheel, throws his hands in the air.
- 27:19We're all like, what are you doing?
- 27:22Yeah. And then he came right off and
- 27:24we were like, dude, that that was the winning ride, yeah.
- 27:29So as so when you're when you're getting in that in that saddle
- 27:34on a on a bucking bull or bro, I'm sorry, Brock, how like what
- 27:38what is going through your mind? What's What is that like?
- 27:42Oh, I personally, I just get television, so I couldn't I
- 27:46just. You just lock everything out.
- 27:48Shut everything out. I'm like zoned in, you know,
- 27:51like my buddies helping me set this out lawn, you know,
- 27:54reaching for the cinches and everything.
- 27:57And then as soon as they tell me it's my turn, I just hop on,
- 28:01just kind of sit back, just hold on for dear life and just just
- 28:05not. Is there that's got to be,
- 28:07that's got to be cool to having somebody that you trust to set
- 28:10you up right. Like I think that's a big part
- 28:12of it that people don't understand, you know, like you
- 28:15don't have to worry about that stuff.
- 28:17All you have to worry about is right at that point because you
- 28:19have somebody that you trust that's working the horse right.
- 28:23He's helping me set up, yeah. Right.
- 28:25It knows how you ride. Yeah.
- 28:27Is there is there any technique that you do to hold on or?
- 28:33Oh, for ranch Brock, it's kind of grab on anything.
- 28:36Just hold on, that's it. He's basically just like a
- 28:39regular working horse. Like if it bucks you then.
- 28:44So do you have a favorite ride that you've had so far?
- 28:50I want to say favorite, memorable.
- 28:52OK. What's your most memorable ride?
- 28:55So I was good for about two or three jumps and then he just
- 29:01chili washed me around my neck. And then it's one of the videos
- 29:06I sent the chain it was. So we've seen it up here.
- 29:09When you're in the white shirt. White shirt or the blue shirt, I
- 29:12don't remember, it was that one was rough.
- 29:16He almost came on top of you. No, it wasn't that one.
- 29:19No, that wasn't even the worst one.
- 29:21Oh wow, it. Was I literally like scorpion
- 29:25like landed on my neck and everything and at this point my
- 29:30parents didn't know I was doing anything.
- 29:33This was like my 5th broke out, didn't know anything.
- 29:36Called mom from the hospital with a broken neck.
- 29:39Turns out nothing was broken, but it was just like I sat up
- 29:47and I like through my house like Nope, I'm done.
- 29:49I lay back down. My buddy comes up.
- 29:51He's like, hey, you OK? He was like, yeah, I'm fine.
- 29:53Like my have a little concussion was like, no, we need to take it
- 29:56to the EMT right now. It's like you landed bad.
- 30:00I was like, no, no, no, I'm good, I'm good.
- 30:03They were we went in to the EMT's.
- 30:06They checked me out. They're like, hey, he's not
- 30:10wanting to go to the hospital, but he's telling my buddy, hey,
- 30:14if he starts feeling nauseous, starts throwing up, take him to
- 30:17the hospital. It's like that.
- 30:19I was like, no, I'm good, I'm good.
- 30:22I had beer, you know, talking about.
- 30:23Yeah. And at one point I was just
- 30:27standing there just talking. And then I just felt my head in
- 30:29and I just crouched down for a little 2nd and it was, oh, I
- 30:35just started throwing out right there.
- 30:37There's your concussion. There, there was.
- 30:39And then my buddy was like, Nope, I'm taking you right now.
- 30:42Yeah, freaking right before he was like call your parents
- 30:47house. Nope, not having, not having.
- 30:49They'll figure it out. They're like, no, it's like he's
- 30:52like one of those guys I trust with my life.
- 30:54Yeah, He's like, all right, just give me your parents phone
- 30:57number. He calls him.
- 31:00He's like, hey, tree, tree just got fucked up.
- 31:04He went pretty bad. We might take him to the
- 31:06hospital. Hearing them talk to my buddy,
- 31:12cool, calm, collected. And then he was like, you want,
- 31:15you want to talk to him? They're like, yeah, hand me the
- 31:17phone. He they're over there yelling.
- 31:20He's like, what the fuck are you doing it all these things.
- 31:23And it was like, damn, just go to the fucking hospital, do this
- 31:26deal, get there. They all these CTS, CTS, chest
- 31:32X-ray, all that. Yeah, turns out no broken bones,
- 31:36no concussion, no nothing. So I was like, oh cool,
- 31:40hospitable that I did not want. Yeah, he's like, I just drank
- 31:45too much beer. That's why I was throwing up.
- 31:46I told you I got lightheaded because I've been over too long.
- 31:49Exactly, that was my best part. He was like, I realized who my
- 31:55buddies were. They were.
- 31:57They're worried. Yeah, they care about you.
- 31:59That was mine. Would you say that the rodeo
- 32:03community, as far as like bronc riding, is that a pretty tight
- 32:07knit community that you guys got going on?
- 32:09Or it's a family for sure. It's like you ask questions,
- 32:11they'll they'll help out. If you're missing equipment,
- 32:14well, yeah, they'll help you out.
- 32:16That'll help out. It's my first time.
- 32:19It was, I didn't know how to do anything, you know, like didn't
- 32:24know how to put a halter, didn't know how to put the bronch brand
- 32:27on, didn't know how to do this do.
- 32:29So I just asked some of these guys like, hey, can you help me
- 32:32out real quick? Do this, do that.
- 32:34Yeah, I'll help you out. So let me ask you this, if you
- 32:38were able to give the younger tree any piece of advice getting
- 32:43started in this, what would that piece be?
- 32:45In a bronch writing Yeah, oh, sit back and lift.
- 32:48That's my problem. I get shot out the front of most
- 32:53of these horses that I get on it seems like say as far back as
- 32:56you can, basically back to the kennel, lift up as hard as you
- 33:00can and fucking just go with it. Because I was used to the like,
- 33:05you know, these shit Dicks, fucking like, oh, they're not
- 33:09bad. You know, I'll keep my regular
- 33:11riding posture and everything. I'll I'll be able to sit it.
- 33:14These things, they are bred to do it and I realized it's
- 33:20totally different game. So are you hoping to raise kids
- 33:23in this in this lifestyle or you could not really force it on
- 33:27them? I shouldn't say force it on
- 33:29them. I would encourage them.
- 33:31I I definitely want to keep doing this and I want to, you
- 33:36know, get like you can. I could imagine like a little
- 33:39mini me running around with a little cowboy hat.
- 33:42Yeah, yeah. So I'd want to like bring them
- 33:47up in this deal, you know, just let's work horses, let's do
- 33:51this, let's have a little property.
- 33:53Let's do that. Let them run around doing
- 33:55whatever instead of inside watching TV.
- 33:58I have all my friends, they they're stuck inside all their
- 34:04Bluetooth phone. Yeah, hold on.
- 34:08That's it. OK, This is this is our podcast.
- 34:13I need I need to wipe the sweat off.
- 34:16Oh, you mean you're hot? I'm fucking hot, oh man, and I
- 34:19need my water. Man, I'm over here in the full
- 34:22Pearl snap short and pants and everything.
- 34:24Well, you're a cowboy. I'm not.
- 34:27Even I'm finding a bad man, I'm not showing.
- 34:29It are you the only? Thing is is I was complaining
- 34:32about how hot it was in here the last two and he's like, it's not
- 34:34that bad. Now I'm the one.
- 34:37Maybe it's just that it's just that I real.
- 34:39I saw some of your guys videos. It's usually just that corner.
- 34:42It could be. It could be.
- 34:44That corner is definitely warm. Yeah, we got to figure.
- 34:47Something out. It's not real bad in jeans
- 34:49though, believe it or not. Really.
- 34:50I'm glad I wore I wore jeans instead of shorts today.
- 34:53With a leather couch, I would not wear shorts.
- 34:55Yeah, I cannot have that. Well, I think it's sticky.
- 34:59I can't do it. Well, I think what I think what
- 35:01I need to do is keep it colder. Yeah, you know.
- 35:11The struggle reel over there, Shane, I'm ready.
- 35:15Well, no man, we're we're excited to have you out and kind
- 35:17of hear your story and stuff like that.
- 35:19But what you know, I guess what do you want people to know about
- 35:25Tree and and your journey into this lifestyle?
- 35:30He's an Asian cowboy and he's a long time You'll never find
- 35:33another one. I've never found him.
- 35:36I've never seen one. I love it that's it.
- 35:39Makes a different, right? Yes, Sir.
- 35:41That's how trying to make the life be a little bit unique, but
- 35:45same time just keep on keeping on, yeah.
- 35:48So I so you're here because I met you through the Phoenix JC
- 35:52Common cheros? Yeah.
- 35:53Right. And for the people that I don't
- 35:56know, that's just Old Man's riding Club.
- 36:01You say all man's or old man's? It's both, but it's getting
- 36:05younger. I mean, I went for a hot minute.
- 36:08It's definitely the old boys club, yeah.
- 36:11Now we're getting younger, but but you're, you're a big part in
- 36:15right now into the whole Pony Express, right?
- 36:18Yeah, I'm I'm long as what is it called?
- 36:23Not trail boss, the other one. Ride Coordinator Ride.
- 36:26Coordinator so I'm kind of helping him out with that deal
- 36:29so. So what is all that about?
- 36:31Pony Express or ride coordinator?
- 36:33Both Pony. Well, Pony Express is just one
- 36:36of those reenactments that we do every year.
- 36:39We try to bring old traditions back for a week and weekend.
- 36:44You know, we'll ride from Phoenix all the way.
- 36:47Press gave hand mail off to each other for like a mile, mile and
- 36:501/2. Every every rider will have his
- 36:52own leg. Yeah.
- 36:54And we, that's our most public, you know, everybody comes out to
- 37:00see it. So we try and make it a big deal
- 37:03for us. So how many riders will you have
- 37:05this year? Hopefully more than 30 that way
- 37:12it's usually 60 rides for the whole weekend so.
- 37:15So it gives everybody 2 rides. Two rides, yeah, but if there's
- 37:18more, people will shorten down legs.
- 37:20You know some legs are really bad for for 4/4 and 1/2 miles,
- 37:25so we'll shorten some stuff down if people want.
- 37:29Yeah. And when is that happening this
- 37:30year? Because I know it's usually
- 37:31pretty hot. This year, the last.
- 37:34Weekend of March. OK, so it won't be as hot.
- 37:37It won't be hot we. Already had it this year.
- 37:40So we'll have it for the kids this year, so we'll have it
- 37:44either on one spring break for them or the other ones so more
- 37:48of the comptrolls can come out. Gotcha.
- 37:51So. That's a good idea.
- 37:53That's our deal. And then this year or next year,
- 37:58we're having five legs for breast cancer.
- 38:01So some of the culture wives would ride in pink shirts, you
- 38:06know, make their own kind of money and then they'll they'll
- 38:10need to breast Cancer Foundation.
- 38:12That's cool. And that's like for that's,
- 38:15that's that's brand new brand. New for next year, Yeah, Yeah,
- 38:18that's our deal. Yeah.
- 38:21And. Then we have a couple rides,
- 38:23like a fall ride, spring trail ride.
- 38:28We'll have a fall and spring and then we're working on a pack
- 38:32trip. Yeah, for like a whole week.
- 38:35So we'll go, I forgot where, but it's up north, so it's beautiful
- 38:40country. We'll go like South of the rim
- 38:42and then go all the way. Like pine top or strawberry.
- 38:45I don't remember the details, but it's supposed to be like a
- 38:48seven day deal. Like people can hop in, join in
- 38:51one day, hop off the other day. You know it doesn't have to be
- 38:55a. The whole 7 days, very cool.
- 38:59And we all this is to get donations and raise money for
- 39:06underprivileged kids and all that, right?
- 39:09Yeah, it's supposed to help out under privileged families.
- 39:15You know, just give them a little bit to help and forgot
- 39:22what organization we help out with horses help.
- 39:25They're kind of a little therapeutic horse place.
- 39:29So they'll help with special needs kids and give them that
- 39:34equine therapy. Sometimes it's veterans.
- 39:37So it's like that's our main partner right now just to bring
- 39:43out more stuff. So how how long have you been
- 39:47part of the club? One year, OK, officially, I've
- 39:51been a guest two years before that, just doing Pony Express.
- 39:58I got it into it because my boss had a diesel shop, was a common
- 40:03show, and he was like, hey, I know you ride horses.
- 40:06You want to do Pony Express for the way?
- 40:08Yeah. So how how many are in the
- 40:10common shows now? 15 match.
- 40:15I think not a lot. So we're we're always looking
- 40:19for new. Blood.
- 40:21So how do you how do you recruit the new blood for that?
- 40:24It's right now it's just word of mouth, honestly.
- 40:26It's word of mouth. That's all it is.
- 40:28Like we'll have friends or like I'm like, I'll talk to my
- 40:31buddies and he's like, hey, you want to, you want to join this
- 40:34deal? Like, you know, like meetings
- 40:37twice a month, you go on trail rides, you camp out when you,
- 40:40yeah, 5 days of in October, it's like, it'll be a fun deal.
- 40:47It's like and who's. Who's the right fit for that?
- 40:50Anybody that wants to ride. Anybody that wants red, yeah,
- 40:53men, women. Children.
- 40:54Oh, it's men. It's just men.
- 40:57That's why it's all anyone. Oh, OK.
- 40:59Old man's. Club all man alone, all man, old
- 41:03man's and young man's. I'm the youngest in it.
- 41:06Oh, I know. So I think the youngest have for
- 41:09me is. Jake.
- 41:13Jake Blackwell, he's like 2027, I think 2527 mid 20s.
- 41:18Yeah, but. Yeah, we're just, we're supposed
- 41:22to have a new one that's like 2021.
- 41:25I forgot his name. Ted Toss, buddy.
- 41:30Oh, we better be 21 to get in the Legion.
- 41:34That's true. That's true.
- 41:37But yeah, it's a, it's a cool group to be around.
- 41:41It's totally it's different. So when you're not, when you're
- 41:45not cowboy and when you're not on a horse, what are you doing?
- 41:51Just trying to catch up on asleep.
- 41:53Really. What do you work at?
- 41:56We work, I work at steel construction company, pre
- 42:00engineered metal building. So we'll make like barnos big
- 42:04type deals where plumbing wise. So we're kind of big in the
- 42:08valley. So they'll get bids from
- 42:13everywhere we'll work. We're in Mesa right now.
- 42:16There's a place in Peoria that has one.
- 42:18There's a place in Kirkland, Havasu, Flagstaff, ASU even had
- 42:23us. Really.
- 42:25Well, now I got a contact. Damn right.
- 42:27I'm ready to do it in my house. Yeah.
- 42:29And then, I don't know, they did the NAU Stadium, they did that
- 42:35big one. Oh wow, so they're doing big
- 42:37scale stuff. Sometimes it's not really that
- 42:39big, like I heard that one was pretty big, but we're only like
- 42:42110, 120 feet up. OK.
- 42:46So it's not that big, but it's usually just like Barnos will
- 42:50make those. It's Butler buildings,
- 42:53everything's pre. It's basically.
- 42:54Yeah, construction. Just put all together and.
- 42:58Bring in the crane and put our scissor lift.
- 43:01Yeah, awesome. That's all.
- 43:03We'll that's all we do some one week we'll be putting steel on,
- 43:07another week we'll be roofing. So we'll be doing insulation,
- 43:11all that crap. This.
- 43:14I only started about a week ago, a month ago.
- 43:17OK, So this is kind of like my first big thing.
- 43:20Yeah, I've dealt with insulation before, but like, you know, from
- 43:24diesel trucks bringing the firewall and everything, This is
- 43:28hell compared to that. I cannot like roofing week.
- 43:33It'd be like 2 weeks. I oh man, every day I come home
- 43:37I have to have to take a cold shower.
- 43:39Yeah, I hear you, man. I mean, I'm in the same boat,
- 43:42working outside all damn day. So have you right now, and I'm
- 43:50not trying to call you out or nothing.
- 43:51Yeah, you, but you haven't gotten a buckle yet.
- 43:55No, that's so. I'm still kind of new to this
- 44:00and comparatively I've only been on about 15 head.
- 44:04OK. So I've only covered one or two,
- 44:08I don't remember like one in Williams and 1:00 somewhere
- 44:12else, just some podo. And most of the time it's just
- 44:16cash prizes. And to be honest, I'd rather
- 44:18have cash can. You buy yourself a buckle.
- 44:21Yeah, someone said that one time.
- 44:24He's like, oh, I got second place was like you can use that
- 44:26money to buy a buckle. I was like, no one wants to see
- 44:29a second place buckle. I'm sorry.
- 44:30Yeah, like if I win it, I win it for sure.
- 44:33That's the right way. I'm wearing 1.
- 44:35So man, paying bartender, I'm going with it every night.
- 44:40I'm going with it. That's awesome.
- 44:42Awesome. Well, we're excited for you in
- 44:44eight weeks in a row, right, Getting ready to ride.
- 44:48So I think what we can do is maybe we recap.
- 44:52Yeah, Get them back out here after you're done with your
- 44:54series. See how you did.
- 44:56Tell us some stories about the rides that you have through
- 44:58there, right? See how much you know.
- 45:01See how your rides improved. See what's changed.
- 45:03Yeah. So.
- 45:05It's the same stock contractor from.
- 45:07Last year, so OK, so you should know them.
- 45:09I know a good bit of them. Some of them they're kind of
- 45:13they're high school rodeo surrogate, OK horses.
- 45:16So they're kind of up there. This is kind of I think this is
- 45:19their warm up for this. Oh, OK.
- 45:23That makes sense. Yeah.
- 45:24So they're not even like. They're not even just.
- 45:28They're not broken in a little bit.
- 45:29They're they're ready. They're they're off their break
- 45:32and they're ready. Yeah, yeah.
- 45:34So some of them are a little, little less bakery.
- 45:40Some of them just kind of hop around.
- 45:42Yeah, some of them kind of 1, I think one or two stalled up for
- 45:46me. So they're just, some of them
- 45:48might be new. So they're just trying to get
- 45:51feelers on. Yeah.
- 45:53And then some, most of those Cowboys, I know they're right in
- 46:00the ranch bronc. I know them by word of mouth.
- 46:02You know, like some of them work at the RO.
- 46:07That's a big ranch up there, the Babbitts, everything like I've
- 46:13researched all the big ranches up there.
- 46:15They're they're top so. Awesome.
- 46:18Their hands, yeah. We're excited to see it.
- 46:21I know you're going to go up what, this weekend?
- 46:23Yeah. And then we're going to be
- 46:24coming up the second or third weekend in August.
- 46:26So we're going to come watch it. We'll come check it out.
- 46:28But yeah, man, we got a blast having yon.
- 46:32You know, hopefully we can recap.

- 46:35maybe in September if you're down.
- 46:38Have you come out and we'll, you know, recap your your summer
- 46:43season up in Williams? Oh, hopefully it'll be better
- 46:46than last year. Last year.
- 46:48Hey, you know what? We're going to say that it's
- 46:50going to be better than last year.
- 46:51What you can do is bring all the money that you want.
- 46:53There you go. We're going to put it out in the
- 46:55atmosphere. You have a better summer than
