Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, what's up. Everybody? Just wanted to chime in here
- 0:02Speaker 1: real quickly. You know that the recording of these bonus
- 0:05Speaker 1: episodes this week is going to be a little wonky.
- 0:08Speaker 1: I'm in the middle of building a new studio here.
- 0:10Speaker 1: We moved, it's a whole thing. Didn't want to go
- 0:12Speaker 1: a week without recording any bonus episodes though, so you're
- 0:15Speaker 1: gonna have to deal with a little extra reburb. Just
- 0:18Speaker 1: think of it as you're in like the studio at
- 0:20Speaker 1: Motown back of the day. Also, quick shout out before
- 0:23Speaker 1: we get into this bonus episode to all of you
- 0:25Speaker 1: listeners for the continued support. Thank you as always. This
- 0:29Speaker 1: episode is a special tribute to you guys. Thanks for
- 0:31Speaker 1: inspiring and motivating me as always. And yeah, real quick.
- 0:35Speaker 1: This past Tuesday, as you probably know, we released our
- 0:38Speaker 1: eighth episode in our Wu Tang series, this one on
- 0:41Speaker 1: Old Dirty Bastard, and this week over the bad Lands Feed,
- 0:44Speaker 1: we've got a brand new episode on David Lynch for
- 0:46Speaker 1: you to check out. I killed Laura Palmer just so
- 0:49Speaker 1: you know it was me. All right, let's get into
- 0:51Speaker 1: the after party. Hey, discos need a little more disgrace
- 0:56Speaker 1: Land in your life, Just to touch to get you through.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Yeah me too. This is the podcast that comes after
- 1:03Speaker 1: the podcast. Welcome to Disgraceland the after Bernie, Welcome to
- 1:20Speaker 1: the Disgraceland Bonus episode, a little thing we like to
- 1:23Speaker 1: call the after party. This is the show after the show,
- 1:27Speaker 1: the party after the party, the bridge to get you
- 1:29Speaker 1: from one full episode of Disgraceland to the other, the
- 1:31Speaker 1: backyard to dig into the dirt. On this episode, we
- 1:35Speaker 1: are talking, among other things, about well you guys, the
- 1:39Speaker 1: Disgraceland community and what makes you all so awesome. We're
- 1:42Speaker 1: also talking about old dirty bastard, amazing Halloween songs, and
- 1:46Speaker 1: a call to arms against shitty music and born music history,
- 1:49Speaker 1: and of course your voicemails, text dms and more, and
- 1:52Speaker 1: as always, a whole lot of Rosie. All right, disc goes,
- 1:56Speaker 1: Let's get.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Into it, all right.
- 2:09Speaker 1: We are here in the Disgraceland Bonus episode, in what
- 2:11Speaker 1: we call the after party, the place where we discuss
- 2:15Speaker 1: the music and the sometimes flawed and sometimes larger than
- 2:18Speaker 1: life characters that need discussing. And I've been reflective lately,
- 2:23Speaker 1: Like I said earlier at the top here, I recently
- 2:25Speaker 1: moved had some a little more alone time on my hands,
- 2:29Speaker 1: and I figured I would be having allowing me to
- 2:32Speaker 1: just sort of, you know, while I'm moving and unpacking
- 2:35Speaker 1: the stuff from the family, I'm thinking about what are
- 2:37Speaker 1: we even doing here in this disgrace land that we've built.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I put these bonus episodes together with the team to
- 2:45Speaker 1: help with the team here at Double Elvis, and a
- 2:48Speaker 1: lot of times I'm just caught up in the motion
- 2:50Speaker 1: of doing it. I wanted to kind of pause on
- 2:52Speaker 1: that this week and just sort of share my thinking
- 2:55Speaker 1: with you guys. When I started Disgraceland, I did it
- 2:58Speaker 1: in part to make the podcast that didn't yet exist
- 3:02Speaker 1: but that I wanted to hear. And before Disgraceland, there
- 3:05Speaker 1: was no music in true crime podcast. And what's grown
- 3:09Speaker 1: out of Disgraceland is this community, you guys, the discos,
- 3:13Speaker 1: and as we've grown together beyond music and true crime.
- 3:17Speaker 1: It's not just about the piano player who got away
- 3:19Speaker 1: with murdering his wife, or the hip hop star who
- 3:22Speaker 1: got gunned down on Crenshaw or the horror core artists
- 3:25Speaker 1: who aid his roommate. Now it's about you, and it's
- 3:28Speaker 1: about me, and it's about the relationship that we have.
- 3:30Speaker 1: I've been thinking about what I bring to this relationship.
- 3:33Speaker 1: You got to do that every once in a while
- 3:34Speaker 1: to keep things fresh. You guys know this, You guys
- 3:36Speaker 1: who are married, you guys who were in long term
- 3:38Speaker 1: relationships with other men and women and significant others, You
- 3:41Speaker 1: got to know when to stop and just sort of
- 3:44Speaker 1: do a little personal assessment. Okay, reflect. I've been thinking
- 3:49Speaker 1: about what I like, I said, what I bring to
- 3:51Speaker 1: this relationship, and I've been thinking about what you guys
- 3:53Speaker 1: bring to this relationship as well. This engagement that we
- 3:56Speaker 1: have in these bonus episodes, it's turned into this unexpect
- 4:00Speaker 1: to gift for me. When I started doing the bonus episodes,
- 4:04Speaker 1: I mean, quite honestly, it was a contractual obligation. That's
- 4:06Speaker 1: how it started, as one of the deals that I
- 4:08Speaker 1: had earlier in the in the lifespan here of Disgraceland.
- 4:12Speaker 1: And I didn't like just, you know, hacking up this
- 4:14Speaker 1: bonus episode and packaging it up and sending it out
- 4:17Speaker 1: to you guys. I thought there'd be a new, a
- 4:19Speaker 1: more interesting, more nuanced way to do things. So we
- 4:23Speaker 1: we found a way to do this with some old
- 4:25Speaker 1: school telephone wire, some rotary telephones, through voicemail and text
- 4:32Speaker 1: and of course, the modern tools of social media, and
- 4:34Speaker 1: now I had this other place for me to talk
- 4:37Speaker 1: to you and for us to talk together once a
- 4:39Speaker 1: week in a real and tangible way. And what's come
- 4:44Speaker 1: of that, you know, beyond all that, what's what's more
- 4:46Speaker 1: important is that you guys provoked me to think about
- 4:50Speaker 1: music and to think about musicians that we cover in
- 4:53Speaker 1: a different way, which is refreshing. It is totally refreshing,
- 4:57Speaker 1: and I have a lot of gratitude for it. What
- 4:59Speaker 1: I like to believe that I bring to the relationship
- 5:02Speaker 1: is similar. It's a unique point of view on the
- 5:04Speaker 1: musicians that we cover and the music that we love
- 5:07Speaker 1: or the music that we are in love with learning
- 5:10Speaker 1: about We are music lovers. All of us were obsessives.
- 5:14Speaker 1: It's not enough to know that old dirty bastard had
- 5:17Speaker 1: spent time in prison. We want to know and feel
- 5:20Speaker 1: his state of mind in the moment while he experienced
- 5:22Speaker 1: hard time. It's not enough to simply read on rollingstone
- 5:26Speaker 1: dot com that ACDC was accused of inspiring a serial killer.
- 5:30Speaker 1: We want to peek inside the state of mind to
- 5:32Speaker 1: that serial killer and find out what he was doing
- 5:34Speaker 1: when he was listening to a CDC it's not enough
- 5:37Speaker 1: to be told by Billboard Magazine that Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska
- 5:41Speaker 1: was inspired by real life gangsters from Philadelphia. We want
- 5:44Speaker 1: to be sitting on a corner across the street in
- 5:46Speaker 1: South Philly at that moment when they blew up the Chickenman,
- 5:48Speaker 1: and when they blew up his house too. In the
- 5:51Speaker 1: New York Post might interview me about Taylor Swift and
- 5:53Speaker 1: her many stalkers, But you want to hear the lunacy
- 5:57Speaker 1: and derangement that contributes to those stalkers scale walls and
- 6:00Speaker 1: bypassing the security of the biggest pop star in the world,
- 6:03Speaker 1: and to try to understand the reason behind all of that.
- 6:07Speaker 1: These artists, they're all entertaining, but that's just the tip
- 6:11Speaker 1: of the iceberg. That tip of the iceberg is all
- 6:14Speaker 1: throughout the mainstream music press. It's easy to find in biopics,
- 6:19Speaker 1: it's easy to find in biographies. But the things that
- 6:24Speaker 1: these artists do, they're crimes. The things that happen to them,
- 6:27Speaker 1: they're attackers, and the things that inspire them provide a
- 6:31Speaker 1: whole other level of entertainment for us to explore here
- 6:35Speaker 1: in Disgraceland, a new kind of storytelling that we can
- 6:38Speaker 1: tap into edge of your seat storytelling spawned from music
- 6:41Speaker 1: and true crime. And we've got a whole different but
- 6:43Speaker 1: similar thing going on with bad Lands, which I'll address
- 6:46Speaker 1: in our Rap Party Bonus episode. One of these weeks
- 6:49Speaker 1: you get us subscribe to that over in the bad
- 6:50Speaker 1: Lands Feed, But here in the Disgraceland Feed, this is
- 6:54Speaker 1: the place for the true music obsessives, for the freaks,
- 6:57Speaker 1: the geeks, the stoners, the burnouts, and the gearheads, and for,
- 7:01Speaker 1: like I said, the obsessed. For those who want the
- 7:03Speaker 1: story behind the story, That's what I've always wanted. For
- 7:07Speaker 1: those who want to be transported into the story, That's
- 7:10Speaker 1: what I've always wanted as well. For those long rides,
- 7:13Speaker 1: those lonely nights, those endless commutes, and those rare moments
- 7:17Speaker 1: of you time when it's just you and your headphones,
- 7:20Speaker 1: you're walking the dog, you're doing the dishes. Who the
- 7:24Speaker 1: fuck knows what you're doing. It's you time. You can
- 7:26Speaker 1: do whatever you want. You have great taste. You drive
- 7:29Speaker 1: the conversation here as much as I do. Try doing
- 7:32Speaker 1: that at Rolling Stone or at Billboard, or at Pitchfork
- 7:35Speaker 1: or anywhere else. Of consequence, they aren't going to listen
- 7:38Speaker 1: to you. They have their own agenda, they have publicists
- 7:41Speaker 1: to answer to, they have records to sell. Here we're
- 7:45Speaker 1: behind the board together, mixing our own music, and we
- 7:47Speaker 1: do it Old school and new school Telephone six one
- 7:51Speaker 1: seven nine oh six six six three eight, voicemail and
- 7:54Speaker 1: New school six one seven nine oh six six six
- 7:56Speaker 1: three eight Text at Disgrace Lampod on socials, Grace Lampod
- 8:00Speaker 1: at gmail dot com on email. I can't wait to
- 8:03Speaker 1: hear from you guys this week on all things music
- 8:05Speaker 1: and true crime. I'm gonna be back in two seconds
- 8:07Speaker 1: right after this break with your voicemails, your texts, and
- 8:10Speaker 1: your dms. All right, we're back in real quick. Before
- 8:36Speaker 1: we get into your voicemails, text and dms, I want
- 8:38Speaker 1: to illustrate what I was talking about in the earlier block.
- 8:41Speaker 1: So here are some recent headlines from the major music
- 8:44Speaker 1: sites right now. From Billboard dot com, this is an
- 8:47Speaker 1: actual headline. Jason Moras's Motown Nightjive brings season best scores
- 8:51Speaker 1: on Dancing with the Stars. Also from Billboard dot com.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Bts Young Cook shares golden concept photo ahead of album release.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Rollingstone dot com Tizo Touchdown is the future of rap rock,
- 9:04Speaker 1: and one more from Rollingstone dot Com. From kindles to
- 9:07Speaker 1: Crest White Strips, these are the best October Prime deals
- 9:10Speaker 1: worth shopping? Now, are you fucking kidding me? Does any
- 9:13Speaker 1: of this interest you? No? Of course it doesn't, because,
- 9:16Speaker 1: like me, you aren't interested in dancing with the stars,
- 9:18Speaker 1: k rock, rap rock, or giving a flying fuck about
- 9:21Speaker 1: Rolling Stone's take on Crest White Strips. And why would you?
- 9:25Speaker 1: This is a best asinine clickbait about music that doesn't
- 9:28Speaker 1: interest you, or at worst advertising disguised as music content.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Here's what you care about. Josh from the eight oh
- 9:35Speaker 1: one on the question of how we discovered music before
- 9:37Speaker 1: the Internet.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Hey Jake, this is Josh from the eight oh one
- 9:41Speaker 3: calling about how we found music before the Internet. For me,
- 9:46Speaker 3: it was skateboarding videos. You could hear anything from Johnny
- 9:50Speaker 3: Thunders to GZ in the same video, so you got
- 9:53Speaker 3: a good mix of everything.
- 9:54Speaker 4: And then it was a nineties kid So the Internet came.
- 9:57Speaker 3: Out shortly after that, But yeah, skateboarding the magazines were
- 10:01Speaker 3: mostly how I found music. Thanks love the show by.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Right on, Josh. I was never a skater myself, but
- 10:08Speaker 1: most every kid I hung out with was a skater.
- 10:11Speaker 1: So I know exactly what you're talking about. Skate videos
- 10:13Speaker 1: from the eighties and nineties nineties, especially Treasure Chors of
- 10:16Speaker 1: great Music and Dogtown and z Boys, the sort of
- 10:20Speaker 1: higher end skate documentary, great documentary, one of the greatest
- 10:23Speaker 1: documentary I've ever seen. Champagne narrates it it really I
- 10:28Speaker 1: know it's not a skate video, but it really drives
- 10:31Speaker 1: your point home. With the soundtrack for that film, it's
- 10:34Speaker 1: an incredible mix, as you probably know here, Josh. It's
- 10:36Speaker 1: an incredible mix of early metal, classic rock, pre punk
- 10:39Speaker 1: stuff that you would have heard during the time of
- 10:42Speaker 1: skateboarding's origins, which is what Dogtown Sea Boys is all about.
- 10:46Speaker 1: All right, let's check out with Chris from the five
- 10:47Speaker 1: seven three on how he got into music.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Hey, everybody, this is Chris from the five to seven
- 10:54Speaker 4: to three. I was going to comment on your request
- 10:58Speaker 4: to talk about musical I had a summer where the
- 11:03Speaker 4: parents had gotten divorced and I did proverbial stay at
- 11:06Speaker 4: the grandparents for the summer Newtown. I think I was
- 11:09Speaker 4: about a third grader and I meet a kid named
- 11:13Speaker 4: jesse Lee, and the first thing jesse Lee did was
- 11:16Speaker 4: hand me a TDK to set tape that it said
- 11:20Speaker 4: these three words guns and roses. You know, prior to that,
- 11:25Speaker 4: I was probably on a path towards marching band with
- 11:28Speaker 4: my little saxophone and it was Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson.
- 11:32Speaker 4: I just didn't have any other experiences. No Jesse Lee's
- 11:38Speaker 4: were in my world prior to that. But I listened
- 11:40Speaker 4: to that tape, shut her off and said, I don't
- 11:43Speaker 4: know what those guys are talking about, but I want
- 11:45Speaker 4: to be like them. Also, I was going to see
- 11:48Speaker 4: if you had ever heard the theory that Garth Brooks
- 11:51Speaker 4: is a serial killer. There's a lineage, not a lineage,
- 11:56Speaker 4: but there's a comparison to murders in each of the
- 11:59Speaker 4: cities he's played. At every city he goes to, there's
- 12:02Speaker 4: been a murder or there's an alarming amount of coincidences
- 12:06Speaker 4: that there's murders in each town that Garth Brooks has played.
- 12:10Speaker 4: And so I think it was Burt Kreischer that connected
- 12:13Speaker 4: the two details, and he's been saying that Garth Brooks
- 12:18Speaker 4: is a serial killer. That might make a good April
- 12:21Speaker 4: fool Day episode possibly, But anyway, you guys keep doing
- 12:24Speaker 4: what you're doing. Thank you for everything.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Cheers, Chris jesse Lee, You guy, jesse Lee sounds like
- 12:29Speaker 1: a gen X delinquent kid that I would have known
- 12:32Speaker 1: grown up as well. And I can relate to the
- 12:36Speaker 1: summers at my grandmother's. That's why that Nirvana Grandma take
- 12:39Speaker 1: me home. That hit fucking hard man. Anyways, I've never
- 12:43Speaker 1: heard the Garth Brooks serial killer story, but hot damn, Chris,
- 12:46Speaker 1: I am listening, all right. I'm loving the music discovery stories.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Keep them coming. Let's check in with Patrick from the
- 12:54Speaker 1: nine oh four. Out there eating up asphalt, working hard,
- 12:56Speaker 1: deliver a beer for you guys in the great state
- 12:58Speaker 1: of Florida.
- 13:00Speaker 5: Isaac looks up its patricks, got men in sane ougously in.
- 13:02Speaker 3: Florida driving a truck delivering beer.
- 13:05Speaker 5: Loved the podcast you were talking about discovery music stories.
- 13:10Speaker 5: I got one for you. I was a kid and
- 13:13Speaker 5: I was exploring this building that had been in construction
- 13:16Speaker 5: and abandoned, walking around, checking it out, you know, and
- 13:21Speaker 5: inside this little hole in the wall, I saw a
- 13:25Speaker 5: backpack and whatnot and thought someone was in there. Said hello,
- 13:28Speaker 5: got no response, went in, checked it out. Looked like
- 13:32Speaker 5: the stuff belonged to like a traveling kid. It was
- 13:35Speaker 5: a backpack, guitar from cardboards with markers and a CD case.
- 13:41Speaker 5: I was a little kid, so I decided, let me
- 13:43Speaker 5: look through this CD case see what I can find.
- 13:47Speaker 5: Kid obviously took some stuff with him on the road
- 13:49Speaker 5: to listen to. But I found the Funkadelic Cosmic Flop
- 13:54Speaker 5: album well CDs and it looked cool. I never heard
- 13:59Speaker 5: of it before, so I stay at home. Don't know
- 14:02Speaker 5: if you can say this on the pod. I got
- 14:03Speaker 5: a little stone listen to it and it blew my mind.
- 14:07Speaker 5: And to this day I am a huge Funkadelic fan
- 14:10Speaker 5: and cannot hear them without thinking of that story. So anyways,
- 14:15Speaker 5: love the show, brother, keep up what you're doing. I
- 14:18Speaker 5: listen to you while I'm driving around doing my saying Gee.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Thanks for the call. Patrick. Dude, the beginning of your
- 14:23Speaker 1: of your story sounds like the opening scene of a
- 14:26Speaker 1: horror movie. What a wild and daring way to discover
- 14:32Speaker 1: none other than Funkadelic Cosmic Slop. Yes, incredible album, and
- 14:37Speaker 1: yes and even more incredible album when you're stoned. At
- 14:40Speaker 1: some point, dude, we're going to do an episode on Funkadelic.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Thanks for this, Patrick, and thanks for working herd out there.
- 14:45Speaker 1: All right, let's switch topics and hear from Ian maybe
- 14:48Speaker 1: up in Canada on top five Halloween songs.
- 14:53Speaker 6: He hey, Jake, this is Ian maybe several five fuck
- 14:56Speaker 6: from Canada. I'd have to give you my top five
- 15:01Speaker 6: Halloween sells, in no particular order. Got Belle Lugosi's Dead,
- 15:07Speaker 6: Ministry every day it is Halloween. That's got to be
- 15:10Speaker 6: Man Love and Rock, It's Haunted, Swish Blade, Symphony, Witches,
- 15:16Speaker 6: type of negative black number one, And if I had
- 15:19Speaker 6: to give an honorable mention, it would be Uncle Acid
- 15:22Speaker 6: and the Dead Beats. I'll cut you down, all right,
- 15:25Speaker 6: rock and roller.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Fucking great list, and none of which would have been
- 15:31Speaker 1: on my list but will be now. Great titles, especially
- 15:34Speaker 1: Bella Lugosi's Dead. If you're interested in Quentin Tarantino's latest book,
- 15:38Speaker 1: centem A Speculation, It's got a great insert on the
- 15:41Speaker 1: death of Bella Lugosi. It's absolutely fascinating and worth checking
- 15:45Speaker 1: out for that alone. But the whole freaking book is incredible,
- 15:47Speaker 1: as you would imagine. There will be a bad Lands
- 15:50Speaker 1: episode on Bella Lagosi at some point. All right, so
- 15:53Speaker 1: let's recap just real quick. Some of the artists, you
- 15:55Speaker 1: guys brought up already on these calls and text Johnny
- 15:57Speaker 1: Thunder's guns N' Roses Bauhaus Funkadelic to the earlier point
- 16:02Speaker 1: of why we are here in this feed right now together.
- 16:04Speaker 1: It's not just to dig into edge of your seat
- 16:06Speaker 1: storytelling about insane rock star behavior, but it's to talk
- 16:09Speaker 1: about great music and the people who make it. And
- 16:12Speaker 1: you guys have great taste, and I hate to break
- 16:13Speaker 1: it to you, You're just not going to get Johnny
- 16:15Speaker 1: Thunder's guns N' Roses Bajas Funkadelic. You're not going to
- 16:19Speaker 1: get them on the pages of Rolling Stone right now
- 16:21Speaker 1: or Billboard or really anywhere else with the level of
- 16:23Speaker 1: context and perspective that we're dealing with here, You guys
- 16:27Speaker 1: built the space, the space where we are unashamed to
- 16:30Speaker 1: make classic rock great again, where we know in our
- 16:32Speaker 1: bones that there isn't a hip hop artist on the
- 16:34Speaker 1: charts right now who could ever hold the mic to
- 16:36Speaker 1: any number of nineties or early Adds mcs. It's right here,
- 16:40Speaker 1: right here, where metal, punk, dance music, hell even disco
- 16:44Speaker 1: takes flight through wildly entertaining transgressive behavior. And it's here
- 16:48Speaker 1: where the DIY can do hustle of hardcore music and
- 16:51Speaker 1: blue collar blues country in soul, where it inspires us
- 16:55Speaker 1: to always search for and unpack the most entertaining stories
- 16:58Speaker 1: from music history, the same old textbook bullshit pedaled by
- 17:02Speaker 1: the mainstream music press or the hackney biopics, entire biographies
- 17:06Speaker 1: right here in Disgraceland, right here because of you, the
- 17:09Speaker 1: Disgraceland community, the discos. This isn't a podcast. This is
- 17:13Speaker 1: a revolt against shitty music, a call to arms against
- 17:17Speaker 1: boring music history discos. Fire all of your guns at once,
- 17:20Speaker 1: Explode into space. Disgraceland after party, pre party, three pods
- 17:25Speaker 1: and the truth back in a moment with more from you, guys,
- 17:42Speaker 1: guys six one seven, nine oh six, six, six three
- 17:46Speaker 1: eight to leave me a voicemail. Let's keep going on
- 17:48Speaker 1: this music discovery thread. How did you guys get into
- 17:51Speaker 1: music in a pre Internet era? Which juvenile delink Win
- 17:53Speaker 1: got you into? The pre Pour Some Sugar on Me
- 17:55Speaker 1: def Leppard? Which Stone Skaters slipped you the first Suicidal
- 17:58Speaker 1: Tendencies album, The name of the cool older dude who
- 18:01Speaker 1: dated your sister and introduce you to jay Z for
- 18:03Speaker 1: the first time. Six one seven, nine oh six six
- 18:06Speaker 1: six three eight. Call me from work. Your boss is
- 18:08Speaker 1: not gonna care, trust me. Call me from the road
- 18:10Speaker 1: hands free only, of course. Six one seven nine oh
- 18:13Speaker 1: six six six three eight. You can send a text too,
- 18:16Speaker 1: just like Dylan from the two six TOZH. On the
- 18:18Speaker 1: question of favorite Halloween songs, Dylan writes Jake Dylan from
- 18:22Speaker 1: the two six oh Here, we'd like to submit my
- 18:24Speaker 1: list of my favorite Halloween songs. None of these mention
- 18:27Speaker 1: the word Halloween, but who the hell care is? They're great?
- 18:29Speaker 1: I agree with that favorite Halloween songs don't have to
- 18:31Speaker 1: explicitly mention Halloween or even be about Halloween. They just
- 18:35Speaker 1: gotta be spooky, fucking creepy. You know you're driving late
- 18:37Speaker 1: at night and you're like, fuck, I gotta get home, man,
- 18:40Speaker 1: I'm scared. Number one Children of the Grave, Black Sabbath,
- 18:44Speaker 1: I totally agree. Underrated by the way. Number two for
- 18:47Speaker 1: whom the Bell Tolls Metallica. Number three Symptom of the Universe,
- 18:50Speaker 1: Black Sabbath Greats might be my favorite Sabbath song. Awesome
- 18:54Speaker 1: taste Dylan. Number four zero The Smashing Pumpkins wouldn't have
- 18:58Speaker 1: picked that one, but I'm Okayumber five Ghost Song Jim
- 19:01Speaker 1: Morrison and the Doors. I don't know ghost song do I?
- 19:03Speaker 1: People are strange as where I go do with spooky
- 19:06Speaker 1: door stuff? Great list, nonetheless, Dylan, thank you so much.
- 19:10Speaker 1: All right, let's check in with the seven seveny five
- 19:14Speaker 1: on more Halloween songs, and right here they go in
- 19:17Speaker 1: with number one how to Make a Monster by Rob
- 19:19Speaker 1: Zombie both versions is that cheating? Number two crip Zombie
- 19:22Speaker 1: Hula by Deadcats, Number three blood Letting by Concrete Blonde,
- 19:27Speaker 1: Number four Night Prowler by ac DC, five eight No
- 19:30Speaker 1: Grave by Johnny Cash, six Zombie Crushed by Groovy Goolies.
- 19:34Speaker 1: I would totally have Werewolves of London on here, but
- 19:36Speaker 1: it was on your list. Hope you had some of
- 19:38Speaker 1: mine on yours as well. They're online and here's the playlist,
- 19:42Speaker 1: awesome playlist here, All Hallow's Eve. Excuse me as the
- 19:46Speaker 1: name of the playlist, I want to get you the playlist.
- 19:48Speaker 1: Use your name. It's Brent n Sandy, b R E
- 19:53Speaker 1: N t N s A N d I E. Check
- 19:57Speaker 1: that out on Spotify Brent in Sandy. And there's a
- 20:00Speaker 1: great playlist here called All Hallows Eve and it starts
- 20:04Speaker 1: with a fucking banger that they didn't mention heads will
- 20:07Speaker 1: roll by Yeah yeah, yeahes great one, great one, science fiction,
- 20:11Speaker 1: damn good stuff on here. I'm looking at this Psycho Killer, Godzilla,
- 20:16Speaker 1: nice good good, good, good, good good good list. Thank you.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Seven seventy five Jane from the three oh six right saying, Hey, Jake,
- 20:23Speaker 1: you asked about discovering music slash fants, et cetera. I
- 20:27Speaker 1: was a kid when smash Mols released I'm a believer,
- 20:29Speaker 1: and I had zero concept of what a cover song was.
- 20:32Speaker 1: We were in the city with my dad, who usually
- 20:34Speaker 1: only listened to talk radio. When the song came on
- 20:36Speaker 1: the local station. We're absolutely blown away when dad, a
- 20:40Speaker 1: child of the sixties, knew the words to this quote
- 20:43Speaker 1: unquote cool new song. It opened the doors to the
- 20:45Speaker 1: monkeys and beatles and all sorts of great music and
- 20:48Speaker 1: still a favorite memory of my dad. From Jane. Awesome story, Jane,
- 20:54Speaker 1: appreciate this, appreciate you should say, and a little bittersweet
- 21:00Speaker 1: as a singer from smash Mouths just passed away a
- 21:01Speaker 1: couple of weeks ago. Great text. Let's check in with
- 21:05Speaker 1: Sad from the four to two, who writes in, Hey, Jake.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Thad from the four h two formerly from six to
- 21:11Speaker 1: one to two, loved the series on Wu Tang. Worked
- 21:14Speaker 1: at a mom and pop record store in the early
- 21:16Speaker 1: nineties and sold a ton of Wu in associates. I'm
- 21:19Speaker 1: fifty three and finally going to give them a listen.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Couple of suggestions, Okay, three Black Flag Hawkwind or maybe
- 21:25Speaker 1: Jesus Lizard saw Jesus listenor open for Rollins band on
- 21:28Speaker 1: the Goat tour. Was never so scared for my life.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Keep up the great work, rock a Rolla. I think
- 21:32Speaker 1: I saw Jesus Lizard on that tour with Rollins in
- 21:36Speaker 1: Rhode Island, Providence, Babyhead. I've seen Jesus Lizard like three times.
- 21:42Speaker 1: I believe I saw them downstairs at the Middle East,
- 21:44Speaker 1: and I think I saw them at the Paradise as well.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Of course, my memory is very foggy and I could
- 21:50Speaker 1: just be making this shit up. No, I'm not. Jesus
- 21:53Speaker 1: Lizard is one of the greatest bands I've ever seen
- 21:55Speaker 1: in my life, one of the greatest last shows I
- 21:57Speaker 1: have ever ever ever seen. And Henry Rollins is doing
- 22:02Speaker 1: a spoken word to her, and he's doing a gig
- 22:05Speaker 1: about fifteen minutes from my home, and I think I'm
- 22:07Speaker 1: gonna go see him in a couple weeks, and I
- 22:08Speaker 1: hope to meet the man. Been a fan forever. Also,
- 22:11Speaker 1: there's a dude in my gym who wears a Rollins
- 22:13Speaker 1: Van shirt, and I'm gonna introduce myself one of these days.
- 22:16Speaker 1: I almost did it yesterday, but I didn't. I was like, eh,
- 22:19Speaker 1: shirts inside out. It's kind of fucking weird. All right,
- 22:22Speaker 1: Let's keep going here with the text the four one six,
- 22:24Speaker 1: where its in hey have you done an episode about
- 22:26Speaker 1: Ministry and Al Jorgensen and I respond with, Hey, no,
- 22:30Speaker 1: I haven't, but I might at some point. I used
- 22:36Speaker 1: to work in a moving company where the original drummer
- 22:38Speaker 1: from Ministry worked. He worked there before I got there,
- 22:41Speaker 1: like a couple of days before, and he was legend.
- 22:44Speaker 1: And I don't know what the original drummer for Ministry's
- 22:48Speaker 1: name was. I think at the time they even had
- 22:50Speaker 1: a drum machine. So this could all be moving company
- 22:53Speaker 1: myth for all I know. Anyone connected to Dan's Van
- 22:56Speaker 1: in Somerville from back in the day, hit me up
- 22:57Speaker 1: and let me know what I'm talking about. All right,
- 23:00Speaker 1: Let's do another text here from the four two three,
- 23:05Speaker 1: who writes in yo Jake Warner MC and Colorado here
- 23:09Speaker 1: not really a band, but I'd love to hear a
- 23:11Speaker 1: Bob Dylan album produced by Rick Rubin. I'll lot Johnny
- 23:14Speaker 1: Cash's late career American albums. Dylan being backed by Fish
- 23:18Speaker 1: would be a personal preference, but doubtful it would be
- 23:20Speaker 1: any good. I love it. You're suggesting it, and you're
- 23:27Speaker 1: doubtful it'll actually be any good. You're just there for
- 23:30Speaker 1: the chaos of it all, which I can get with.
- 23:32Speaker 1: You go want to say, speaking of Fish Farm Aide
- 23:34Speaker 1: and backing Legends, did you know that after backing Neil
- 23:37Speaker 1: Young for an absolutely scorching down by the River at
- 23:39Speaker 1: Farm in nineteen ninety eight, Neil approached Fish to back
- 23:42Speaker 1: them on tour, but the band declined. One can only
- 23:45Speaker 1: imagine how cool that tour would have been. Thanks to
- 23:47Speaker 1: all the great content and keep up the great work,
- 23:49Speaker 1: Rock a ROLLA. I love the idea of Rick Rubin
- 23:53Speaker 1: producing Bob Dylan. I don't think it'll ever happen, but
- 23:56Speaker 1: stranger things have happened. Maybe will who knows. I fucking
- 23:59Speaker 1: love it though for it, I can't believe I didn't
- 24:01Speaker 1: think of that. That's like something I would think of
- 24:03Speaker 1: but you did so. Cheers to you, four two three,
- 24:05Speaker 1: appreciate it. Let's do this one from the four to
- 24:08Speaker 1: four zero. Hey Jake Sean from Cleveland, Ohio, long time listener.
- 24:13Speaker 1: My question for you is, I know you do Disgraceland,
- 24:16Speaker 1: bad Lands twenty seven Club, but on the tracks dead
- 24:18Speaker 1: and Gone and the research that goes into these subjects,
- 24:21Speaker 1: what's the day like for Jake Brendan. Do you do
- 24:23Speaker 1: all the recording in one day? Do you do one
- 24:25Speaker 1: week of this show and next week focus on that show?
- 24:28Speaker 1: Whatever and however you do it. It's working. I look
- 24:30Speaker 1: forward to everything every week for a new episode and
- 24:33Speaker 1: for the new seasonal shows as well. Lastly, I just
- 24:35Speaker 1: wanted to say you're awesome with how you interact with
- 24:38Speaker 1: the fans. A lot of podcast hosts won't do that,
- 24:40Speaker 1: and you do and it's really cool. Take care man,
- 24:42Speaker 1: You got a Sean answer your question, it's yes I
- 24:47Speaker 1: do the research. Yes I do the writing, but I
- 24:51Speaker 1: have a whole team here who does research and writing
- 24:53Speaker 1: as well, and we pretty much divvy up the episodes.
- 24:56Speaker 1: It depends. Used to be that used to be that
- 25:00Speaker 1: I did everything, but that's not the case anymore. It's impossible,
- 25:02Speaker 1: as you can probably imagine with all the content. But typically,
- 25:06Speaker 1: and generally speaking, a week for me is either a
- 25:10Speaker 1: research week or a writing week, and I alternate and
- 25:14Speaker 1: I typically split my days generally speaking. Again, generally speaking,
- 25:18Speaker 1: I split my days in half. The early morning. I'm
- 25:21Speaker 1: a very early riser. In the first half of my
- 25:24Speaker 1: day are dedicated to either researching or writing, and the
- 25:27Speaker 1: second half of my day I'll typically take a break.
- 25:30Speaker 1: I'll go work out, go to the gym, or go
- 25:32Speaker 1: for a swim, and then I eat, and then the
- 25:35Speaker 1: second half of my day is done. Is this stuff
- 25:39Speaker 1: here talking into a microphone and doing that part of
- 25:41Speaker 1: it or reviewing mixes, which I have such a great
- 25:46Speaker 1: team here on the music and mix side that I
- 25:49Speaker 1: barely even review the mixes anymore. Matt Bowden is sort
- 25:53Speaker 1: of our mixar, and I have a lot of faith
- 25:55Speaker 1: and trust in him to handle that. So that's a
- 25:59Speaker 1: general speaking how I do things now. I've been moving
- 26:02Speaker 1: for the last it seems like months, a few months here,
- 26:05Speaker 1: so everything's been upset and disrupted. But I will say
- 26:09Speaker 1: the team here at Double Elvis, Zeth Lundy, Seankhalin, Matt T. Hainey,
- 26:12Speaker 1: Matt Bowden, Brady Sadler, Jammie Demas, Dennis Brennan, everybody involved,
- 26:17Speaker 1: whoever I'm forgetting off the top of my head, chips
- 26:20Speaker 1: in and helps with these episodes, touches them in one
- 26:24Speaker 1: way or another and makes it possible for us to
- 26:26Speaker 1: deliver so much goddamn content. And we have even more
- 26:30Speaker 1: in store for you. And I just got off a
- 26:31Speaker 1: call about an hour ago talking about a new idea
- 26:35Speaker 1: that I think we're gonna try to bring to life
- 26:36Speaker 1: next year as well. So I hope that answers your question, Sean.
- 26:40Speaker 1: Let's do one last one here from the two one
- 26:43Speaker 1: five it says, Hey, the season's hip hop episodes have
- 26:46Speaker 1: been incredible. Can't wait for Liquid Swords and like an
- 26:49Speaker 1: era bad Lands has been on point as well. I'm
- 26:52Speaker 1: spreading the word to all in Philly that these podcasts
- 26:54Speaker 1: are the ones to follow. I'm about to mellow out
- 26:56Speaker 1: with some slow, funky West Coast vibes and Tupac Radical
- 26:59Speaker 1: Truth on my lunch break. Keep up the good work,
- 27:02Speaker 1: double Elvis. You got a two one five. Appreciate that.
- 27:06Speaker 1: As you know, we're in the middle of this Wu
- 27:09Speaker 1: Tang Clan serialized season ten episodes on the WU one
- 27:12Speaker 1: each for each member, one episode for each member. We
- 27:16Speaker 1: just delivered, just launched our Old Dirty Bastard episode that's
- 27:19Speaker 1: in your feed right now. Odb was beloved. I can
- 27:23Speaker 1: tell from the response I'm getting from you guys on
- 27:25Speaker 1: social media. He was one of these incomparable artists and
- 27:29Speaker 1: just a crazy true crime story connected to him as well.
- 27:33Speaker 1: He's charged with attempted murder of an NYPD officer, chased
- 27:36Speaker 1: down by rot Wiler's shop by men at ski masks,
- 27:39Speaker 1: addicted to cocaine, arrested ten times in just a few
- 27:41Speaker 1: months time, suffered through some harrowing experiences while doing time
- 27:46Speaker 1: at a notorious prison. Of course, you can hear all
- 27:49Speaker 1: about this in the brand new episode that I just
- 27:51Speaker 1: mentioned that's available in your feeds. But you know, just
- 27:54Speaker 1: while we're in the after party here, I want to
- 27:56Speaker 1: talk a little bit about this gonzo thing that Odeb
- 28:00Speaker 1: you perfected. And as we say in the episode, old
- 28:02Speaker 1: Dirty Bastard was not Russell Jones. Old Dirty Bastard was
- 28:06Speaker 1: a character, just like all the guys in Wu Tang
- 28:08Speaker 1: are to some extent characters alter egos. Odib himself said,
- 28:13Speaker 1: quote dirty is just the negative side of me, the
- 28:16Speaker 1: pressure that builds up inside me. Then when somebody gets
- 28:19Speaker 1: on my nerves, it's got to come out. Which that
- 28:22Speaker 1: quote got me Jake Brennan thinking, here, what are some
- 28:26Speaker 1: of the best alter egos in music history? Some of
- 28:29Speaker 1: the best alter egos? Is it David Bowie as Ziggy Starts?
- 28:33Speaker 1: Is it Garth Brooks? Is Chris Gaines? Is it one
- 28:35Speaker 1: of princes as many alter egos? Maybe it's odib Who
- 28:39Speaker 1: do you got? Who do you think best alter egos
- 28:41Speaker 1: in rock music? Six one seven nine oh six six
- 28:43Speaker 1: six three eight Leave me a voicemail semi text and
- 28:46Speaker 1: let me know, all right, real quick recommendation here. Jim Croche,
- 28:50Speaker 1: specifically the album I Got a Name from the film
- 28:53Speaker 1: The Last American Hero with Jeff Bridges that I'm going
- 28:56Speaker 1: to talk about in bad Lands this week. You can
- 28:58Speaker 1: hear that real sad sack seventy shit that I'm a
- 29:01Speaker 1: sucker for that. I gotta I gotta say I I've
- 29:05Speaker 1: never gravitated toward Jim Croche, but I'm watching this movie.
- 29:08Speaker 1: This song is in the opening credit scene, and I'm
- 29:10Speaker 1: just like, oh yeah, this song, this song's fucking great.
- 29:13Speaker 1: I go, I take a bath. I listen to the
- 29:15Speaker 1: whole record and I'm just fucking blown away, smoking my
- 29:18Speaker 1: dad grass just awesome. So uh, I need more of this.
- 29:24Speaker 1: I don't need it, but I want it. I don't
- 29:25Speaker 1: even really want it. I just want to know what
- 29:27Speaker 1: Sad Sack seventy shit. You guys are suckers for Okay,
- 29:30Speaker 1: it's a cat Stevens Leonard Cohen bred America. Christopher Cross
- 29:35Speaker 1: is Christopher Cross seventies or eighties? I think he's eighties.
- 29:39Speaker 1: But anyways, what Sad Sack seventies album should I be
- 29:41Speaker 1: checking out? What Jim Crochey album is your favorite?
- 29:43Speaker 2: Let me know?
- 29:43Speaker 1: Six one seven nine oh six six six three eight.
- 29:46Speaker 1: Other questions to ponder best alter egos and rock and roll?
- 29:50Speaker 1: Who was better than old Dirty Bastard Ziggy Stardus, Chris Gaines?
- 29:53Speaker 1: Bruce Springsteen is Bruce Springsteen. I'm kidding. It's still only
- 29:56Speaker 1: the second week of October, Okay. So I also want
- 29:59Speaker 1: to know what your favorite Halloween songs are, And not
- 30:02Speaker 1: only that, I want to know what your favorite Disgraceland
- 30:05Speaker 1: Halloween episodes are. Big Lurch Jim Morrison as a Zodiac killer,
- 30:09Speaker 1: The Misfits, Black Sabbath, ac DC, who is it? Send
- 30:13Speaker 1: me a quick text or voicemail six one seven, nine
- 30:15Speaker 1: oh six, six six three eight to let me know.
- 30:17Speaker 1: The reason I want to know is because we're I'm
- 30:20Speaker 1: doing this informal poll because I want to top ten
- 30:23Speaker 1: these Disgraceland episodes and re release them for you in
- 30:26Speaker 1: the ten days leading up to Halloween. And we're almost there,
- 30:28Speaker 1: so I got to get on it, and so do you.
- 30:30Speaker 1: Let me know what your favorite disgrace Land Halloween episodes
- 30:32Speaker 1: are six one seven, nine oh six, six six three eight.
- 30:36Speaker 1: All right, quick break and I'm back in a flash.
- 30:51Speaker 1: All right, welcome back again. Six one seven, nine oh six,
- 30:55Speaker 1: six six three eighth. Let me know your favorite disgrace
- 30:57Speaker 1: Land Halloween episodes text or voicemail, Big Lurch, Michael alec Ouzzy,
- 31:01Speaker 1: the Misfit Sabbath.
- 31:02Speaker 5: Let me know.
- 31:03Speaker 1: You can hit me up on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook
- 31:06Speaker 1: as well. Justin G writes in on Instagram, just finished
- 31:09Speaker 1: the ODB episode. He was my fave to wish he
- 31:11Speaker 1: would have got a shit together in out od and
- 31:14Speaker 1: yes he made some great fucking music. Yes, Justin, old
- 31:17Speaker 1: dirty bastard certainly did it. Ellie Ordes writes in on Instagram.
- 31:21Speaker 1: Hey Jake, I just heard your latest bonus episode and
- 31:23Speaker 1: I got me thinking about my cosmic connections to music.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Super long story short. When I was a teenager, I
- 31:29Speaker 1: had this little yellow AMFM radio and I exclusively listened
- 31:32Speaker 1: to a rock station called k Rock LA, and it
- 31:35Speaker 1: changed the way I see music in general, because I
- 31:37Speaker 1: was introduced to all these different bands that most of
- 31:39Speaker 1: the kids I went to school with knew of already.
- 31:42Speaker 1: But I was so sheltered in a racist as heck
- 31:45Speaker 1: household where my grandfather would only ever let us listen
- 31:49Speaker 1: to and watch anything and just Spanish. So finding my
- 31:52Speaker 1: way into music enlightenment it was rather difficult, at least
- 31:55Speaker 1: at first, but once I got to keep listening and
- 31:57Speaker 1: in between listening to other stations too, I pretty much
- 32:00Speaker 1: spanned my music selections as most people these days, I
- 32:03Speaker 1: listened to a little bit of everything. And as for Spanish,
- 32:05Speaker 1: It's absolutely within my heart and soul and I'll always
- 32:08Speaker 1: flock to it from time to time. Great music discovery
- 32:11Speaker 1: story there from Disco Ellie Ordez, Thank you so much.
- 32:15Speaker 1: Let's check in with Michael lane Heath on Facebook real Quick,
- 32:20Speaker 1: who writes in Hya Jake got hip to your Disgracelam
- 32:22Speaker 1: podcast the other day, and I'm impressed by your noir
- 32:25Speaker 1: delivery and awareness of culture facts, etc. And the melotron
- 32:29Speaker 1: intros for what it's worth. A few yunks back, I
- 32:31Speaker 1: did a collection of interviews with Lou Reed. You might
- 32:33Speaker 1: have seen my week Beats. Your year paperback will be
- 32:37Speaker 1: out soon. Nice to reach out, keep in touch and
- 32:39Speaker 1: keep on keeping on. All the best from san fran MLH. Michael,
- 32:43Speaker 1: I'm not sure you're gonna hear, I responded in the
- 32:46Speaker 1: in the Disgraceland I'm sorry in the Facebook app. Thanks,
- 32:49Speaker 1: I appreciate it. I've heard of your book, by the way,
- 32:52Speaker 1: your collection, I believe I even I even read some
- 32:56Speaker 1: of it when I was researching Lou Reid. And as
- 32:58Speaker 1: I mentioned in my message back to you, I did
- 32:59Speaker 1: this whole double episode on lose origin story that's almost
- 33:03Speaker 1: entirely fictionalized, but based on the facts that I think
- 33:06Speaker 1: you're gonna dig. It's basically me copying Raymond Chandler in
- 33:10Speaker 1: honor of Lou Reed. All Right at Disgraceland pod on Instagram, Facebook,
- 33:15Speaker 1: and x Let's recap all Right number one, a new
