- 1:52Speaker 2: All right, we're back on a busy Wednesday, and I
- 1:54Speaker 2: would like to, first of all, Dick Fane, show some
- 1:57Speaker 2: appreciation to our next guest, by the way, for winning
- 2:00Speaker 2: the game last night before today's radio segment. Always makes
- 2:04Speaker 2: it more fun when we're talking about a win versus
- 2:07Speaker 2: the loss the night before. Lane Lambert, head coach of
- 2:10Speaker 2: the Kraken, his weekly visit with us right here on KJR.
- 2:14Speaker 5: Coach, how are you, man? Doing well, guys. After the near.
- 2:21Speaker 5: Heart attack last night. We're all good.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Well, let's talk about that. Because last time we spoke.
- 2:29Speaker 2: I talked about how gritty you guys were, you know,
- 2:32Speaker 2: going up 2-0 against the Flyers, and then they come
- 2:34Speaker 2: back and tie it, and you win a shootout. You're like, yeah,
- 2:38Speaker 2: but we really wouldn't like to do that. And then
- 2:40Speaker 2: we have another one last night where you're up 3-0
- 2:42Speaker 2: against the Red Wings, and they come back and tie it,
- 2:45Speaker 2: partially due to a bogus roughing call on Chandler Stevenson,
- 2:49Speaker 2: which we can talk about. So is there a part
- 2:51Speaker 2: of you now that says, hey, enough of this gritty,
- 2:53Speaker 2: tough stuff. We need to start putting teams away when
- 2:56Speaker 2: we get big leads like that.
- 2:58Speaker 8: Well, yeah, I mean, no question that it certainly wasn't
- 3:01Speaker 8: the way you want to script it in the third period.
- 3:04Speaker 8: I thought we came out of the thought we came
- 3:06Speaker 8: out of the gates in the third period.
- 3:08Speaker 5: We did a lot of good things.
- 3:09Speaker 8: We were looking, you know, we had a couple of
- 3:11Speaker 8: chances to go up for nothing. And that probably would have,
- 3:15Speaker 8: you know, been what we needed in terms of sort
- 3:18Speaker 8: of finishing the game off. But, you know, it's it's
- 3:22Speaker 8: pretty well documented in the National Hockey League right now.
- 3:25Speaker 5: You're not out of a hockey game unless you think
- 3:27Speaker 5: you are. And if you think you are, then you are.
- 3:30Speaker 5: But there's been a lot of, you know, even over
- 3:33Speaker 5: the course of the.
- 3:34Speaker 8: Last few years and just with the skill level and
- 3:36Speaker 8: the talent level and the shifts in momentum, you know,
- 3:41Speaker 8: a little bit of youth in terms of, you know,
- 3:44Speaker 8: the league is a bit younger and whatnot and the
- 3:46Speaker 8: momentum swings are a little bit higher and lower than
- 3:50Speaker 8: they should be. But certainly, you know, I thought we
- 3:54Speaker 8: came out of the gates well in the third and
- 3:56Speaker 8: then I didn't like a couple of the calls they got,
- 4:00Speaker 8: you know, the penalties we got, and they ended up
- 4:04Speaker 8: capitalizing on them. And all of a sudden, you know,
- 4:07Speaker 8: we're in overtime. So good for us for finding a
- 4:10Speaker 8: way to win in a shootout. You know, we can
- 4:15Speaker 8: always learn from these kinds of things. Certainly not, you know,
- 4:17Speaker 8: what we want to do, but obviously an opportunity to
- 4:21Speaker 8: grow and get better.
- 4:22Speaker 3: Well, Softy mentioned that penalty on Stevenson. What did you
- 4:25Speaker 3: see and what did the refs say that they saw?
- 4:30Speaker 8: Well, you know, what happens in the league is that
- 4:33Speaker 8: the refs really don't come over and talk to you
- 4:35Speaker 8: because they don't want to get, you know, they don't
- 4:36Speaker 8: want to get into a confrontation.
- 4:38Speaker 5: Or yell that and they've been instructed not to do that.
- 4:42Speaker 5: You know, I guess for the, you know, keeping the game.
- 4:46Speaker 8: Moving along and things like that. The problem with that is,
- 4:50Speaker 8: is that, you know, Most of the time, us coaches
- 4:53Speaker 8: don't do a lot of yelling at them. It's legit.
- 4:57Speaker 5: If you want to ask a question and get.
- 5:00Speaker 8: An answer, it's a legitimate question that you have, and it's.
- 5:05Speaker 5: Sometimes frustrating when you can't get an answer. So I
- 5:08Speaker 5: guess in terms of what did they say.
- 5:11Speaker 8: I don't know what they said. The way I saw
- 5:14Speaker 8: the play, it's a face-off. It's six on five for them.
- 5:18Speaker 5: It's a... it's almost like.
- 5:20Speaker 8: A rugby play, like you are battling and, uh, you know,
- 5:24Speaker 8: their player Arvidsson who incidentally drew the three penalties in the,
- 5:28Speaker 8: in the game.
- 5:30Speaker 5: Uh, that's not a shocker to me. He's pretty renowned
- 5:33Speaker 5: for that.
- 5:34Speaker 8: Um, you know, and that's not, I'm not saying that
- 5:37Speaker 8: in a positive way either. Um, but you know, at
- 5:45Speaker 8: the end of the day, it's a battle to get
- 5:46Speaker 8: out to the point and he's interfering with Chandler. holding
- 5:50Speaker 8: him up, and Chandler gave him a shove out of
- 5:52Speaker 8: the way, and I couldn't actually believe that he called
- 5:55Speaker 8: the penalty, but they did, and we had a real
- 5:59Speaker 8: good opportunity to kill it off, and we got an
- 6:02Speaker 8: unfortunate bounce, and they ended up making an excellent play,
- 6:05Speaker 8: to be honest with you.
- 6:07Speaker 5: You've got to give them credit.
- 6:09Speaker 8: The play that Dylan Larkin made to Brinkhead in that
- 6:12Speaker 8: moment was world-class, and it ended up in the back
- 6:16Speaker 8: of our net, so disappointing. Didn't get an explanation for
- 6:21Speaker 8: the penalty. Didn't agree with the penalty. And, you know,
- 6:24Speaker 8: you've got to allow the guys to play the game.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I love it. I love the fact that
- 6:30Speaker 2: you kind of called it out. Love the fact that
- 6:32Speaker 2: you were able to overcome it and still get a
- 6:33Speaker 2: win anyway. It shows what this team's potential is, no doubt.
- 6:36Speaker 2: But Lane Lambert with us. Guy's getting a win last night.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Shootout win over the Red Wings 6-3-1 with the Utah.
- 6:42Speaker 2: We call them the Wooly Mammoth, by the way, coming
- 6:44Speaker 2: to town tomorrow night at CPA. But, Coach, let me
- 6:48Speaker 2: go back to the lineup that you're throwing out there.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Some hockey fans in town are saying that they think
- 6:53Speaker 2: maybe the third and fourth lines are playing better than
- 6:56Speaker 2: the top two lines right now. I mean, is that
- 6:59Speaker 2: a good sign that you're still winning with the guys
- 7:01Speaker 2: who were supposed to be carrying the offense, or is
- 7:04Speaker 2: that maybe a bit of a concern for you?
- 7:05Speaker 5: What do you think? No, I think it's a good,
- 7:08Speaker 5: I think it's a good thing we're winning. I think
- 7:11Speaker 5: it's excellent that.
- 7:13Speaker 8: That our, you know, our third and fourth lines are,
- 7:16Speaker 8: you know, contributing and doing their jobs and contributing offensively. And,
- 7:21Speaker 8: you know, our, our top guys, they've done a pretty
- 7:24Speaker 8: good job on the power play, you know, and we've,
- 7:27Speaker 8: we've moved a couple of things around. We mixed, put
- 7:30Speaker 8: Sam Askevich with Chandler last night and moved up Beverly
- 7:33Speaker 8: and we had some opportunities that way. So, You know,
- 7:37Speaker 8: we have to be a four-line team. There's no question
- 7:39Speaker 8: about it. But certainly, you know, over the course of
- 7:41Speaker 8: the last six games and the road trip, you know,
- 7:44Speaker 8: the Freddie Goudreau line and the Catton line has been
- 7:47Speaker 8: very good for us.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Well, you mentioned the move with Stevenson and Samaskevich playing together.
- 7:53Speaker 3: That worked for a goal last night. Talk about the
- 7:55Speaker 3: reasoning behind why you did that.
- 7:57Speaker 5: It seemed to work.
- 7:59Speaker 8: Well, we just had to get a little bit of a,
- 8:01Speaker 8: you know, there's times when, you know, when things are
- 8:04Speaker 8: a little stale and they're just not working for whatever reason,
- 8:07Speaker 8: and so you mix things around and you look for
- 8:09Speaker 8: a spark, and we got that with that situation.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Okay, well, Lane Lambert's with us, and look, I mean,
- 8:15Speaker 2: you guys are 6-3-1, and you're talking about things like culture,
- 8:19Speaker 2: and what I mean by that is, you know, we
- 8:21Speaker 2: haven't spoken since the Florida game, and you kind of
- 8:23Speaker 2: came out and I mean, we all know that Joey
- 8:25Speaker 2: kind of wore it a little bit in that game,
- 8:27Speaker 2: and you mentioned that you kind of appreciated, you know,
- 8:29Speaker 2: the way that he got through that. And I'm wondering
- 8:32Speaker 2: what that means for your culture when a guy goes
- 8:34Speaker 2: out and does something like that.
- 8:36Speaker 5: Well, you know what?
- 8:37Speaker 8: We're trying to– I wouldn't say we're trying. We're building
- 8:42Speaker 8: a culture that, you.
- 8:43Speaker 5: Know, it doesn't matter. Everybody matters.
- 8:46Speaker 8: No matter what you– no matter how much you play,
- 8:50Speaker 8: how little you play, you know, You know, everybody has
- 8:54Speaker 8: an importance and a role on the hockey team.
- 8:57Speaker 5: And the biggest thing.
- 9:00Speaker 8: For me is we, you know, we always want to
- 9:02Speaker 8: be a team that's hard to play against, well-organized, structured.
- 9:05Speaker 8: And the bottom line is, you know, in pro sports,
- 9:09Speaker 8: and certainly over the course of 84 games, you're going
- 9:11Speaker 8: to have some ups and downs. And we want to
- 9:14Speaker 8: stay even keel. It doesn't matter if you're up in
- 9:16Speaker 8: a game, you know, 4-0, or if you're down in
- 9:19Speaker 8: a game, 4-0. We want to play the game the
- 9:21Speaker 8: exact same way. And, you know, that goes for, you know,
- 9:26Speaker 8: the goaltenders.
- 9:27Speaker 5: And certainly, you know, Joey battled.
- 9:32Speaker 8: And I would have expected nothing less than him battling.
- 9:35Speaker 5: And he did a great job of it.
- 9:37Speaker 8: You know, we weren't going to put Phillip in the
- 9:39Speaker 8: net after he had played two games in a row.
- 9:42Speaker 5: And there was just no upside to it when you
- 9:44Speaker 5: were down like that. So we, you know, what it
- 9:47Speaker 5: did is it forced Joey to battle. And he did.
- 9:50Speaker 8: And again, like I said the other day, I had
- 9:55Speaker 8: no doubts that he would because he's a character guy
- 9:59Speaker 8: and he's a self guy.
- 10:00Speaker 5: That's the culture we're building around here. I love it.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Tomorrow, pretty good Utah team coming to town.
- 10:06Speaker 5: Go get them.
- 10:06Speaker 2: 7-3, including 4-2 on the road. Go get a win
- 10:11Speaker 2: tomorrow night. We'll talk next Wednesday, Coach. Appreciate this, man.
- 10:14Speaker 4: Thanks, Coach.
- 10:15Speaker 5: Sounds good, guys. Appreciate it. All right, man.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Lane Lambert with us. Coach of the Kraken coming off
- 10:20Speaker 2: the win last night over the Red Wings tomorrow. The
- 10:23Speaker 2: Mammoth at 7 o'clock over at CPA. We're going to break.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Petros Papadakis is going to join us. Does he think
- 10:30Speaker 2: that Jamarcus Shepard would leave Oregon State after a year?
- 10:34Speaker 2: Who does he think should start at quarterback for UW
- 10:36Speaker 2: against Nebraska? And does he want, Dick, a 24-team playoff?
- 10:41Speaker 2: We'll do all that with Petros next on 93.3 KJRFM.
