- 0:03All right, coach.
- 0:06>> Yeah, I thought our guys battled
- 0:07tonight. Um, you know, obviously playing
- 0:10a shorter rotation. Um, you know, heavy
- 0:13minutes for a lot of our guys. Thought,
- 0:14you know, did a good job of uh, you
- 0:17know, putting out the effort that was
- 0:19required in order for us to uh, you
- 0:20know, have a chance. um did a good job
- 0:22in the first half of just dwindling it
- 0:24down to six and uh you know the
- 0:26beginning of the second half we missed
- 0:28three just you know wide open shots and
- 0:30they come down and convert on all three
- 0:32and uh that was you know ultimately
- 0:33where the game kind of got away got to
- 0:3521 and then you're kind of fighting back
- 0:37the rest of the half and the rest of the
- 0:38game. Um so you know uh they had a lot
- 0:41of step up. You know Billy Richmond um
- 0:43you know has 12 two-point baskets and uh
- 0:45you know that was a huge point of
- 0:46emphasis for us is trying to keep them
- 0:48out of two-point field goals and you
- 0:50know he uh did a great job for him and
- 0:53uh you know he's an X-factor when he can
- 0:54do those things and then you know Darius
- 0:56obviously makes seven threes. So, um,
- 0:58those two things right there ultimately
- 1:00where the game was decided and, um, you
- 1:02know, they just did a great job of
- 1:03disrupting us with some of their ball
- 1:04pressure early, uh, kind of throwing us
- 1:06off our off balance and, um, you know, I
- 1:09thought we had some step up from, you
- 1:10know, Murf and Tahad offensively. Yeah,
- 1:12just we weren't able to get enough stops
- 1:14to kind of stay in the game and, uh,
- 1:15didn't make enough easy easy open ones
- 1:17as the game went on. So, take any
- 1:19questions.
- 1:20>> Uh, coach, um, I know not the outcome
- 1:22you wanted, but can you talk a little
- 1:23bit more about the, um, the game from
- 1:25Tahad tonight? He really, you know,
- 1:26seven assist uh only three turnovers. Um
- 1:29really played well offensively,
- 1:30particularly in the second half.
- 1:31>> Yeah, he's been phenomenal offensively
- 1:33the last three games. You know, I think
- 1:34he has 21 assists and like maybe seven
- 1:36turnovers in the last three games. So,
- 1:39he's doing his part offensively. Um you
- 1:41know, I'm just going to continue to push
- 1:42him defensively. Um but, you know, he's
- 1:44he's given the effort that's required.
- 1:46He's really been consistent with his
- 1:47routines um you know, during the week in
- 1:50preparation for games. And uh you know
- 1:52it's when when he's making shots like
- 1:54that, our ceiling obviously goes way up.
- 1:56So you know I'm excited that Todd's you
- 1:58know starting to do that and starting to
- 1:59turn a corner because he makes our team
- 2:01better. Uh so you know it's something
- 2:03that we've been kind of waiting on and
- 2:05uh you know I want him to just stay
- 2:06consistent because even though we've
- 2:07lost the last three while he's been
- 2:08playing well offensively, you know once
- 2:10this thing turns around he's making
- 2:12shots. You obviously um it'll be
- 2:14positive for us. Obviously,
- 2:17Aub is who he is in this this Arkansas
- 2:19offenses. Do you feel like you got your
- 2:21guys did like executed what y'all wanted
- 2:24to do on defense and it was more than
- 2:26just knocking down shots like they like
- 2:28they didn't do in the first game?
- 2:29>> We were a little backed off at Akuff
- 2:31because we were trying to stop him from
- 2:32driving it because if you looked at his
- 2:34last five games like 80% of his 83% of
- 2:37his attempts were from two and I think
- 2:39like 75% of his makes were from two. So
- 2:41he hadn't, you know, while he'd made 10
- 2:43over those five games, he was being
- 2:45really aggressive attacking the paint
- 2:47and we were trying to keep him out of
- 2:48that. I think by doing that, we were
- 2:50backed off of him on the ball. And if
- 2:52you give a player like that any sort of
- 2:53space, he's going to knock shots down.
- 2:55And uh, you know, then once he makes one
- 2:57or two clean ones, that then allows him
- 2:59when he does his dribble pulls and, you
- 3:01know, at that point the basket gets
- 3:02really big for him. And uh, you know,
- 3:04he's a phenomenal player. So you know,
- 3:06he's uh, we did a great job on him in
- 3:08the first game and obviously didn't do
- 3:09very well on him tonight.
- 3:12First game, I think you guys were plus
- 3:1320 points in the paint. Tonight,
- 3:14Arkansas really flipped that script.
- 3:16What was the difference? That speaks for
- 3:19itself, but what did you see out there
- 3:20that was maybe different?
- 3:22>> Well, Keshan Hall wasn't out there, so
- 3:25that makes a big difference when our guy
- 3:27that's as good attacking the paint as
- 3:29anybody in college basketball is not on
- 3:30the floor. It makes our points in the
- 3:32paint go down. So, that was probably the
- 3:34biggest difference for me. And Billy
- 3:36Billy did a great job of just attacking
- 3:38one-on-one closeouts and our guys had no
- 3:39answer for it. So, um, you know, they,
- 3:42uh,
- 3:44had 17 points in transition, so a lot of
- 3:46those are probably paint touches as
- 3:47well. Um, so, yeah, those are probably
- 3:50the two or three things.
- 3:50>> And as good as Murphy was tonight, it
- 3:52looked like Trevor Brazil's rim
- 3:53protection, maybe not the big second
- 3:55half for Murphy like they had the first
- 3:57half, was that did that play a factor in
- 3:59that?
- 4:00>> Um,
- 4:02yeah, he had four block shots, so, you
- 4:04know, he did a good job of uh contesting
- 4:05around the rim and, you know, if he
- 4:07didn't block the shot, he altered it.
- 4:09Um, so yeah, he uh he's a very versatile
- 4:11defender and when he's able to be around
- 4:13the rim and he and he stays down on shot
- 4:14pegs, he's really good.
- 4:17>> Yeah, coach. Um, he talked a little bit
- 4:19about Murphy, but he did have a really
- 4:20good first half for you all and uh
- 4:22seemed to really have bring the energy
- 4:23for you guys. What did you um talk to
- 4:25him about in terms of just kind of
- 4:27stepping up in the absence of Hall out
- 4:29there? Yeah, I think Murf was really
- 4:31disappointed in his performance against
- 4:33um Vanderbilt and he knew that he needed
- 4:35to step up with uh with Key not being in
- 4:37the game and uh you know he played with
- 4:39great pace and great tempo and uh did a
- 4:42really good job of you know taking what
- 4:44the defense gave him and um you know he
- 4:46was explosive tonight and uh you know
- 4:48that's the Murf that you know we
- 4:49obviously need every single night in
- 4:50order for us to win. So uh you know
- 4:52happy happy with his performance. I mean
- 4:54he's uh plus minus he's he's zero on the
- 4:57plus minus. He's flat in 33 minutes. So
- 5:00in the what would that be? 6 and 1/2
- 5:03minutes he doesn't play, we're minus 13.
- 5:06So that's unbelievable. So Murf played
- 5:08great. So he uh needs to keep that
- 5:10going.
- 5:11>> Steve, was this a game where obviously
- 5:13had a lot from Murf and Tai, but with
- 5:14key out, you probably need a little bit
- 5:16more step up from from somebody from
- 5:18somebody else. Maybe at least one more
- 5:19guy. Yeah, I mean Sebastian Ko Elijah,
- 5:23you know, for those guys to go,
- 5:27what is that? Six for 28.
- 5:31Not going to win when that happens. So,
- 5:33um, you know, and I know those guys
- 5:35obviously want to play better. Like, you
- 5:37know, KO never misses open shots like
- 5:39that. You know, he just he missed two
- 5:40butt naked ones in the beginning of the
- 5:42second half. And like, you make that
- 5:43first three, we're down six. You know,
- 5:45it's a different game at that point. And
- 5:47uh when you see the first one go down,
- 5:49you know, it obviously gets you going um
- 5:52and you know, it's uh Elijah did a good
- 5:55job of rebounding, but you know, I
- 5:57thought he was a little tentative um on
- 5:59both ends of the floor and uh you know,
- 6:01we just we needed step up from one or
- 6:03two more guys offensively and uh you
- 6:05know, unfortunately we just didn't have
- 6:06it tonight.
- 6:08>> Anything else for coach?
- 6:09>> Just one more coach. Um, in terms of
- 6:11rebounding though, you guys early in the
- 6:13game being dominated, but kind of
- 6:15stepped back up later in the game to to
- 6:17be able to to do a much better job on
- 6:19the glass. Um, how did you guys kind of
- 6:22get back into that kind of effort on the
- 6:23glass?
- 6:24>> Yeah, I just think, you know, we knew
- 6:26where shots were going up and, uh, we
- 6:28did a good job of crashing the offensive
- 6:30glass, had 15 offensive rebounds and,
- 6:32uh, you know, we only held that we held
- 6:33them to seven offensive rebounds. I
- 6:35think they had three in the first half.
- 6:36So guys did a good job of uh checking
- 6:38out on every single possession and I
- 6:40thought in the second half offensively,
- 6:42you know, uh we did a good job of flying
- 6:44to the rim um cuz we knew when shots
- 6:46were going up and gave ourselves a
- 6:48chance to get some second chance
- 6:48opportunities. So um yeah, they battled,
- 6:51you know, obviously it's it's going to
- 6:53be hard for us to win games when Keyy's
- 6:54not out there. Um and uh you know, but
- 6:57you know, I thought our guys, you know,
- 6:59grinded, battled, played in a really
- 7:00tough environment against a really good
- 7:02team. And um you know we have six games
- 7:04in front of us right now that um you
- 7:06know our schedule while it's never easy
- 7:08you know we've played the number one
- 7:09strength of schedule in our conference
- 7:11up to this point today. Um and then you
- 7:15know I think after tonight we'll
- 7:16probably have the number one strength of
- 7:17schedule in college basketball. So, all
- 7:19that being said, like you know, we got
- 7:21to take advantage of these last six um
- 7:23because, you know, uh we're as good as
- 7:25as all the teams that we play moving
- 7:27forward. And uh you know, we just got to
- 7:28capitalize and we got to come together
- 7:30and we got to limit our distractions off
- 7:32the floor, you know, we got to stop
- 7:33being put in positions where we have to
- 7:35make decisions u to discipline guys. And
- 7:37uh if we can do that and really focus on
- 7:39basketball for a couple weeks, this
- 7:41team's shown that it has the ability to
- 7:43uh you know, win big games.
- 7:46>> Thanks,
