- 0:00History is strange, it's alien, and it won't give us what we
- 0:04would like to have. The morning of October 6th,
- 0:101973, there was a peaceful calm which had settled over Israel.
- 0:16It was Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
- 0:20It's a day of fasting and prayer and introspection, and the
- 0:23streets were empty as Israelis went to the synagogues to
- 0:26observe the solemn holiday. There was a quiet stillness
- 0:30across the land, but it was a silence that would soon be
- 0:35shattered. At around 2:00 PM, the
- 0:38unthinkable happened. Without any warning, Egypt and
- 0:42Syria launched coordinated surprise attacks On Israel was a
- 0:46strike that came on two fronts. The Egyptian army surging across
- 0:50the Suez Canal into the Sinai Peninsula while Syrian forces
- 0:55stormed into the Golan Heights. This was no small skirmish, this
- 0:59was a full scale war carefully planned and executed invasion.
- 1:04The Yom Kippur War had begun, the Egyptian front would see the
- 1:101st wave of action. The Egyptian artillery began
- 1:12pounding Israeli positions along the Suez Canal with a ferocity
- 1:17that stunned the Israeli troops was called Operation Badar.
- 1:22For weeks the Egyptians had been preparing for this exact moment.
- 1:26Over 200,000 troops with tanks, heavy artillery stood ready to
- 1:30make their move. The Bar Lev Line, Israelis
- 1:34defense force along the the Suez, had been built after the
- 1:38Six Day War in 67 and was considered nearly impregnable.
- 1:42But like most fortifications, it wasn't.
- 1:45The Egyptians had a plan. Using water cannons, they
- 1:49blasted through the sand embankments of the Bar Lev Line,
- 1:52which created pathways for their troops to cross the canal.
- 1:56In a matter of hours, Egyptian soldiers had flooded into the
- 1:59Sinai. Israeli soldiers stationed along
- 2:02the Barlev line were taken by surprised, outnumbered and
- 2:06overwhelmed. Many were killed or captured.
- 2:09The Egyptians had achieved their initial goal, breaking through
- 2:12the Israelis line first line of defense in the Sinai.
- 2:16By the end of the day, they had established several bridge heads
- 2:18across the Suez Canal and the victory that they had been
- 2:21yearning for since 1967 seemed within reach.
- 2:26While this was all happening in the South, an equally intense
- 2:29battle was raging in the north. In the Golan Heights, Syrian
- 2:33forces, heavily equipped with Soviet tanks, artillery and
- 2:36aircraft launched a massive assault on the Israeli
- 2:39positions. Syrian troops were determined to
- 2:42reclaim the Golan, which they had lost during the Six Day War.
- 2:47The Israeli forces stationed there were outnumbered 12:50,
- 2:50and the Syrians advanced quickly, using their numerical
- 2:54security to catch Israel off guard.
- 2:58Syrians made significant progress on the first day,
- 3:01pushing the Israelis back and capturing key positions,
- 3:04particularly in the southern part of the Golan Heights.
- 3:08The battle was fierce, Israeli tanks and infantry fighting
- 3:11desperately to hold the line, but the sheer size of the Syrian
- 3:15attack made it nearly impossible for them to maintain their
- 3:18positions. Israel's response on this first
- 3:22day was frantic but methodical. The Israeli Air Force scrambled
- 3:27to retaliate, sending fighter jets to the Egyptian and Syrian
- 3:30fronts. However, they faced an
- 3:33unexpected obstacle. Both Egypt and Syria had been
- 3:37armed with Soviet made surface to air missile systems, which
- 3:40effectively neutralized Israel's air superiority.
- 3:44Many Israeli planes were shot down.
- 3:46The pilots who survived returned home with grim reports of their
- 3:50inability to breakthrough Arab air defenses on the ground.
- 3:54Israel's armored units were hastily mobilized.
- 3:57However, the Israeli army was structured in such a way that a
- 4:01significant portion of its strength relied on reserve
- 4:03forces, many of whom were still observing.
- 4:07Yom Kippur with their families took time to get the reservists
- 4:11to their units, and time was something Israel did not have.
- 4:16By the evening of October 6th, Israeli leaders realized that
- 4:20they were facing a war far more dangerous, far more complex than
- 4:23they had anticipated. In the Sinai, Egyptian forces
- 4:28continued their push, meeting less resistance than they had
- 4:30expected. They were emboldened by their
- 4:33early success, and the Golan the situation was even more dire.
- 4:37Israeli commanders struggled to maintain any semblance of
- 4:40control as the Syrian tanks poured into Israeli held
- 4:43territory. By the end of the first day, the
- 4:47situation looked bleak for Israel.
- 4:50The surprise had worked. Egypt and Syria had successfully
- 4:53launched a well coordinated attack, catching Israel at a
- 4:57vulnerable moment. Israeli losses were heavy,
- 5:01particularly in the air. Egyptian and Syrian forces had
- 5:05made significant gains, and for the first time since the state's
- 5:08founding, Israel was facing a genuine threat to its survival.
- 5:15That night, Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, Defense
- 5:19Minister Moshe Diane met with the military high command.
- 5:23Mood was somber, even fearful. Israel had always prided itself
- 5:28on the ability to defend itself against multiple adversaries,
- 5:32but this time it was different. This time, Israel was not
- 5:35dictating the terms of the fight.
- 5:37Egypt and Syria were in control. As the sun went down on October
- 5:426th, 1973, Israel's fate hung in the balance.
- 5:47The war had only just begun. The road ahead would be long and
- 5:52bloody, But for the soldiers on the front lines and on the banks
- 5:56of the Suez Canal and the rocky slopes of the Golan Heights, the
- 5:59first day had been a shock loss and the realization that Israel
- 6:06and they in the fight of their lives.
