Latest / Faith at Work / Remembering God’s Story About Money
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Today, we are beginning a new series.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: It's a four-week series called Our Money Story.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: And you are going to find that we are going to be fairly direct about
- 0:15the topic of money,
- 0:17and the stories that we bring to it and from it throughout this
- 0:21series.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: We're not going to skirt around the topic,
- 0:25and we're not going to skirt around it because it is a topic
- 0:28that Jesus spoke of
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: and used as a metaphor many,
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: many times in His ministry.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Jesus spoke a lot about money.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Well,
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Because the way that we handle money is never just about math.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: It is about discipleship.
- 0:50It's about the stories we carry and the stories that God longs
- 0:56for us to live into
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: and write in us.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Our money story is a spiritual story.
- 1:07Over the next four weeks,
- 1:08we will remember,
- 1:11release,
- 1:12reimagine,
- 1:13and restore.
- 1:16We will ask God to reshape our narratives so that we can live
- 1:22into the story that
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: God is begging us to live into.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: And today, we start with remember.
- 1:33Sarah Eyre,
- 1:34who is one of the authors of the series that we are using this
- 1:39time,
- 1:40tells a story.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Every single day,
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: her great-grandfather would come into the kitchen and come up around her
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: great-grandmother...
- 1:54his wife and he would hug her and he would kiss her on the
- 1:59cheek and he would ask
- 2:01have i told you that i love you today and every day that she'd
- 2:09answer she would say
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: you haven't told me too many times
- 2:16some truths have to be told again and again and again so that
- 2:23love has time to sink
- 2:26into us we are a forgetful people we remember the melody and
- 2:35forget the words we
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: remember the face and forget the name that's why jesus gave us a meal
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: and said, do this in remembrance of me.
- 2:49Some things we just can't not say,
- 2:53and we can't not say them too many times.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Our worship this morning echoes the same plea, tell us again.
- 3:06Because our anxiety and our scarcity and our fears,
- 3:11they get loud in our lives.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Tell us again of the manna in the wilderness.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: Tell us again of the disciples around the table.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Tell us again of love that changed the world.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: So church, let's remember.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Luke chapter 22,
- 3:35verses 1 through 23 retells a hard story that fear and power
- 3:46and money can conspire
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: together to do terrible,
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: evil things in the world.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: In the story,
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: we see religious leaders scared of the crowds that are around them,
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: and they enlist Judas,
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: and money changes hands,
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: and betrayal is set in motion.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: That is an ugly money story.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Monetizing fear is
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: and weaponizing silver.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: Yet,
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: in the same chapter,
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Jesus gathers His friends,
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: including Judas,
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: and shares the bread and the cup with them.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: In the beginning of the scene, money fuels corruption in the world.
- 4:46But by the end,
- 4:48love sets a table where there is enough for everyone,
- 4:53including Judas.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: That contrast is the gospel's critique, and it is the gospel's promise.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: With Jesus, all are invited to the table.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: Even the Judases.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: He handed a piece of bread.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: There is always enough grace to go around.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: We need to remember that.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: And then we need to build tables like that in the world.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Now,
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: truth be told,
- 5:34those of us in the church many times carry memories of
- 5:39offerings or designated
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: giving used to control,
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: budgets that have been used to shame,
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: and appeals that are drenched in anxiety and shadow.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: We need to bring those stories to light throughout this series.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: And let's remember Jesus' new economy at the table while we do it,
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: where resources are divided and given freely to all.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: Now, from Exodus 16, verses 1 through 18, we hear of a similar story.
- 6:24We learn that Israel stumbles into the desert with Pharaoh's
- 6:29slavery and scarcity
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: still rattling in their lives.
- 6:35And God answers their fear and complaining,
- 6:39again,
- 6:39with bread from heaven.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: Enough for each day, not more and not less.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: And the command to the people of Israel is take what you need,
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: trust God for tomorrow,
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: and keep the Sabbath so no one has to hoard.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: In the wilderness,
- 7:01God moves a people from an economy of depravity and scarcity to
- 7:08an economy of
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: enough.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: Aaron Weber Johnson notes that this text shifts a community's money,
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: narrative,
- 7:18and story from what Walter Brueggemann calls the endless rat
- 7:23race for sufficiency
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: to a life anchored in God's enough.
- 7:30The wilderness becomes a classroom in contentment,
- 7:35trust,
- 7:37and shared provision."
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Now, if you have ever stared at the ceiling at 3 a.m.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: doing anxious math, you know this kind of wilderness.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: God's word for you is still the same.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: Enough.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: There will be enough for today.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: There will be enough when we stop hoarding.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: There will be enough when we keep the Sabbath.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: There will be enough when we share.
- 8:13This series insists that we tell the truth about the stories
- 8:19that have formed us about money.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: Family scripts,
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: cultural assumptions,
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: church habits,
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: because those narratives,
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: they quietly steer our giving,
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: our saving,
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: our spending,
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: and our fears.
- 8:41remembering lets us see those scripts and then hold them up to
- 8:48God's story.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: God's story of liberation and invitation and transformation.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: And when we do that,
- 8:57behaviors change because the story that we relive and live
- 9:04inside changes as well
- 9:09so here's a little homework for you this week yes there will be
- 9:12homework least for
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: the next four weeks name your first memory of money what did you learn
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: How does it still show up in your life?
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: And then name your first memory of money in the church.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: What messages did you absorb in that experience?
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: There are study journals in the narthex on the table here to my right.
- 9:49I printed out 40 because I just didn't know how many people
- 9:52would be interested.
- 9:54If you take them all,
- 9:56there will be enough because I'll just print some more.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: Got a great printer in the office.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: Doesn't take us very long.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: So if they run out, don't worry, there will be enough, I promise.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: And you can do all of the little exercises.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: This is one of the first exercises in that study journal.
- 10:15And then you can talk about them with your family and your
- 10:17friends and maybe in your life group.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: Next, in your homework, I want you to notice manna moments in your life.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: Where did provision show up just when you needed it in your life?
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: And where did the community become your safety net in life?
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: And you're going to jot those down.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: Don't have one?
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: Well, we're going to fix that this morning.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: We have a manna moment for all of you this morning.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: Today we are going to experience a manna moment, a reverse offering.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: In these plates...
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: are $10 bills, real $10 bills, not fake money, like it's real $10 bills.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: And the ushers are going to pass them out and you are to take one.
- 11:39So everybody that's here today gets a $10 bill,
- 11:43everybody with a hand,
- 11:45okay?
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: Don't take more than one.
- 11:48Because if you do,
- 11:49just like the man in the desert,
- 11:50it's going to shrivel up tomorrow.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: It's not going to be worth anything.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: But just take one, all right?
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: And this is not just a symbol, but an actual grace gift, all right?
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: Take it as a gift from God and from the church.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: It is a surprise manna moment in your life.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: And you can do whatever you want with it.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: I did this in a church years ago, and people did all kinds of things.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: Some people...
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: They thought,
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: oh,
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: well,
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: there's somebody I've always wanted to take out for coffee or for lunch,
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: and this is just enough to do that,
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: and it won't affect my budget.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: So they loved on somebody with a cup of coffee.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: Some of them were very aggressive with it,
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: and they thought,
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: oh,
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: my goodness,
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: I can invest this in a kingdom activity.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: And so they created some sort of kingdom activity.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: It was an 8-year-old kid.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: We gave $5 at that time.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: The economy was different.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: But...
- 12:50He took that eight-year-old kid,
- 12:52took that $5,
- 12:53and I can't remember exactly.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: I ragged my brain all week long.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: What did he do?
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: I can't remember.
- 12:58But what I do remember is he came back with $500 and donated it
- 13:03to a ministry in the church.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: So maybe you want to use it for some sort of ministry endeavor.
- 13:11Maybe this is the $10 that you needed to pay your rent or your
- 13:15electric bill.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: It doesn't really matter,
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: but what matters is that you receive it as a man a moment,
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: and you prayerfully reflect on this gift of God that you now have,
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: and how you want to be a good steward of that gift.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: So, go ahead and pass those out.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: Everybody can take one.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: Now,
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: I knew that there was going to be a question,
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: at least in someone's mind,
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: if not just mine,
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: what about the people?
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: What about them?
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: It's not fair that we get to $10 and they don't get $10.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: Well, give them yours.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: Make a man a moment for them, right?
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: You can do whatever you want with this.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: Do whatever the Spirit of God leads you to do.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: Because those things happen in the world.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: Some have some, some don't have some.
- 14:20But when we share and we create matter moments in our lives
- 14:24with others,
- 14:26there is what?
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: Enough.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: I invite you to hold those stories together.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: what has been and what now is and what is promised,
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: and ask ourselves throughout this week,
- 14:42how is my money story changing as I reflect on the past and
- 14:48remember what God is
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: saying?
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: What am I learning about God's money story?
- 14:55So as I conclude,
- 14:56I want you to just walk away with these two images in your
- 15:00mind.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: One, a kitchen sink.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: Someone you love asks, have I told you today that I love you?
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: And you answer, you just haven't told me too many times.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: Go ahead and tell me again.
- 15:14Let that refrain,
- 15:16those words shape your days and shape your stewardship this
- 15:23week.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: And then remember a table in an upper room.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: And one of the chairs belongs to a betrayer,
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: but Jesus still breaks bread and passes the cup to them.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: A reminder that no one earns a seat.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: Grace is not ever rationed.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: The feast is given, not earned or bought.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: Let that image heal your money,
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: shame,
- 15:51and soften any hard places in your life where you withhold the
- 15:56bread and cup from
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: others.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: At home, try these things.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: A remembering prayer at your table.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: Each day, before a meal, pray simply, "'Tell us again, Lord.'"
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: And then add a line that you might need to hear.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: Tell us of the manna.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: Tell us of the table.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: Tell us of your love.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: Tell us that there is enough.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: Do one Sabbath kind of thing.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: Choose one small practice of Sabbath that resists hoarding.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: Maybe don't buy anything for 24 hours.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: Or pause comparison shopping and scrolling.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: That's an activity if you didn't know.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: Oh, we got one over here.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: Or share something you have in surplus.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: I'm very fortunate, so excited I don't have to wear a suit here.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: Paul told me that.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: So I got a lot of suits.
- 17:09The last church I was at,
- 17:12they said,
- 17:12oh,
- 17:13and by the way,
- 17:13you have to wear a suit.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: I said, every Sunday?
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: No, every day.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: So I had to go out and buy six suits.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: I had no clue what I was doing.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: I went to S&K.
- 17:22I said,
- 17:22I need six suits,
- 17:23and I need you to tell me how to put them all together.
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: Literally.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: I'm going to give those away, because I don't need them anymore.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: Just checking before I gave away all my suits.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: I don't want this to go backwards.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: So don't hoard.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: Give away the things that you don't need.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: If you haven't used it in a year, you probably don't need it.
- 17:50Remember,
- 17:51Sabbath both rests us and protects others from our grasping
- 17:59tendencies.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: And then tell someone your money story over coffee or a walk.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: Share one formative memory about money, and then share one manna moment.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: Tell them about what happened today in church.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: That's okay.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: You can do that, right?
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: And we'll see how many people come next week,
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: but we're not giving away $10 next week,
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: just so everybody knows,
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: all right?
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: But you can give them yours, right?
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: Where is God?
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: Talk about where is God meeting you?
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: Where do you want the story to change?
- 18:40Let's discuss those things because that honesty is how God
- 18:44rewrites our story about money.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: So to the worried,
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: if your inner calculator never powers down,
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: remember your worth is not your net worth.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: In Christ, enough is abundance.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: Let the manna teach you that your heart can breathe again.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: To the cynical,
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: if church money talks feel manipulative or small,
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: lift your eyes up to Jesus' new economy.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: The point is not pressure for the next four weeks.
- 19:31The point is simply reflection and participation in the table
- 19:38that we want to grow bigger.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: And to those of you that are comfortable,
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: if you rarely feel the pinch of faith,
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: remember that Sabbath and sharing are God's antidotes to hoarding.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: Enough for me is never an excuse to ignore our neighbor.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: In God's story, provision is shared provision.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: So,
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: before this series moves us to release and to reimagine and to restore,
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: let's stay with remember in this final word.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: In worship...
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: We tell a story because we are forgetful people.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: So today we remember who we are and whose we are.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: We remember the table that seats sinners and saints.
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: We remember the wilderness where bread appears in the morning dew.
- 20:46And we ask God to keep telling us this story until love sinks
- 20:53in and generosity follows.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: Amen.
