Latest / Journey Out of the Bottle / Flipping the Narrative Around Alcohol & Addiction
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Journey Out of the Bottle, a podcast of technology outdated narrative and opening up modern conversations around alcohol and addiction.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Melissa Lyra, and whether you're over tourists, alcohol-free, or somewhere in the gray area, you're in the right place.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: It is my hope that something you hear will inspire you, comfort you, or remind you that you are not broken anymore.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Quitting drinking does not have to be hard.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: We are conditioned to believe that stopping something that we have become dependent upon is hard.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: And if you are familiar with the placebo effect, when a notion is implanted or programmed or suggested to us, we will tend to follow that program both emotionally, mentally, as well as biologically.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: So if you believe that stopping the consumption of alcohol is going to be hard, then it will.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: But if you believe that you are powerful, that you have sovereign agency over your own body, mind, and soul, and you step into this choice and decision for your own well-being, knowing that on the other side you will feel 100% better, and I can a hundred percent guarantee that I've been told not to make that promise.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: But I'm like, I'd be lying if that if I didn't say that.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: It is true.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: It is true.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: You absolutely will feel better.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: You just will.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: I get it, but it is pounded into us that we, if we don't have it, something catastrophic is going to happen.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, just if you pay attention to the commercials, it's it's a it's a marketing ploy.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: So, okay, we are led to believe that we are weak and that we are powerless.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: I've seen billboards um on the side about quitting smoking.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Like, you can't do this without this drug.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: You gotta have this drug in order to quit smoking.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: I'm like, whatever.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Like, we can do anything, we are powerful beings.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: However, when you put a toxic and a highly addictive substance into your body, which again, no fault of your own because you're marketed it.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: It is targeted and glamorized and made very, very appealing to us.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: You're gonna take the edge off, you're gonna feel better, you're going to be sexier, smarter, more socially lubricated, uninhibited, less anxious, less stressed, and it's a very, very, very convincing promise.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: So I'm promising you something different.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: We have the capability to liberate ourselves at any moment from anything standing in our way, from achieving our highest potential and the pleasures of life.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Alcohol promises a lot of things on the front end, and it delivers initially, and it might deliver for years.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: You might feel the buzz and the high and the yumminess from alcohol forever, right?
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Like you might not notice any toxic behavior, any you might not, you might be blaming the other things that are happening in your life on other things.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: This is what I did.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: I was like, oh, this has got to be my hormones.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: This has got to just be my unhappy relationship.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: This has just got to be life, right?
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: The reason I'm not sleeping, the reason I'm anxious is work and life and kids and money and houses and mortgages and the relationship that is, you know, like not working out.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Like I blamed everything else except for alcohol.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: I I mean, in hindsight, I knew somewhere deep down.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: I was like, but it can't be the wine.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: It can't be the wine.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: Because if it's the wine, then there's something wrong with me.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: And I can manage.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: I can manage.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: I can take I could I got this.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: I got this.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: So it does deliver.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: It delivers really yummy things.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: It's a promised, glorified, normalized, you know, intoxication.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Life becomes more intoxicating with this substance.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: Drink up and drink responsibly.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Okay, it's a very effective substance that loosens us up, alters our consciousness, changes the way that we are perceiving the current circumstances of our lives.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: And who the fuck doesn't want that?
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Okay, so let's really dig into this whole altering our consciousness.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: We're made to believe, again, on this the sobriety spectrum is like you've got to just live this life.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: You don't need to alter yourself, you don't need to uh feel something different, like just be with it.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: All right, so this is one of the absurdities.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: This is one of the absurdities.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: It's totally normalized and okay for us to alter our consciousness in in every way.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: And let me point it out.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: When you're cold, you turn up the heat, you go buy a sweater, you go buy winter clothes, you wrap yourself up in a blanket, you're hot, you turn on the air conditioning, you put on cooler clothes, you get a fan, you're hungry, you go eat something.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: You're not hungry, you eat something.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: You want to listen to music, you're bored, you're tired, you're sleepy.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: You are constantly tweaking.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: That's this I call it the DJ deck of life.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: You're constantly tweaking the system to make yourself comfortable, which is altering your current perception and consciousness.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: You are altering yourself all the time with everything, unless you're sleeping, which most of us are also altering ourselves during sleep.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: You know, it's like I can't just go to sleep anymore.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: I have to have my, I have to have all of my accoudements, and I've got to have the special pillows, and I have to have the sound machine, and I might have to have a couple pills, and I might have to have these things to allow me to sleep in the most possible best way, the most comfortable way.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: So being comfortable as a human is our existence.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: So alcohol promises to change that consciousness, and it's totally normalized and fine until it doesn't work for you anymore.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: And then you're like, well, now you you shouldn't be altering yourself at all.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: Well, okay, that's bullshit.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: Pick up your phone.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: I mean, we're altering ourselves right now.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: We're hoping to get a different perspective on something that's going not right in our life, or maybe it is going right, and you're like, oh wait, I never thought of it that way.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: Like it's I just I cannot emphasize this enough, and I will just keep emphasizing it.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: This is my emphasis.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: My tiny teeny tiny little what is this called?
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about okay.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: So we're chasing, buying, consuming everything around us, clothing, food, experiences, pain, relief, relief from grief, relief from rage, relief from stress, relief from fear.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: We're just altering our consciousness all the time, tweaking the systems to change our current reality and circumstance.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: And don't let anyone tell you that that is wrong, because even when you go into a like, I'm gonna go do yoga and I'm gonna go meditate.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: Guess what?
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: You're hoping to change your your consciousness, you're altering your current perception to go inward, to shut out the outside, to change what you are currently experiencing.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: Uh the whole world revolves around movement from one place to another.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: And alcohol is a conduit that promises to be a social lubricant, take the edge off, provide relief from the stress, but the only problem here is that it severely hijacks the natural functioning of our neural chemistry and biology.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: And then we become dependent upon it.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: Some of us more than others.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: Some people are like, I can drink and I don't, I don't, I don't have a problem with it because I I don't crave it.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: Okay, let's talk about craving and dependency and why biology is such a huge part of dependence and tolerance.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: Neurochemistry.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: Alcohol impacts the GABA and the glutamate and the dopamine.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: It impacts it impacts the whole body.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: I have a whole list.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: It's called the um vast list of ailments.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: Um, I also have the converse of it.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: It's like what what changes, what, what comes back, what reverses, what repairs after you give up alcohol?
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: So alcohol impacts our entire system, our sleep, our digestion, our neuroscience or our neuro, the neuroscience of our whole body, our neurochemistry, our biology, our um every every system within our body is impacted.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: Our our vision, our hearing, it's a disabling substance.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: So the GABA and the glutamate, these are like the two, it's like the gas pedal and the brake.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: And our body produces GABA and glutamate to keep us in homeostasis, to keep us in balance, to keep us mobile, upright, functioning, aware, conscious, remembering, and and and when alcohol goes in there, it it lowers, it lowers, and it raises.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: And then so then your body stops producing or it overproduces or underproduces, and then it's just like out of equilibrium, it's out of balance, it is disrupted, it is dysregulated, and with that dysregulation, when you put alcohol in, it's tweaking the system, and then when you remove it, usually when you go to sleep um or for a few days, and the problem is not with you, it's not with you that you're weak, that you are flawed, that you're broken, that your character defected, that you are, you know, like oh well, you don't know how to handle your liquor.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: It's your biology takes over.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: Please hear this.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: Your biology takes over, and the whole system gets hijacked by this substance.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: It severely hijacks the neural natural functioning of our um neurochemistry and biology, and then some or many become dependent upon it because, but not because of the institutional rhetoric that has been passed down to us.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: I've already said this, that we are broken, character-defected, or weak.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: The notion that the addict has something wrong with them and that they need help or must now admit to their weakness and powerlessness in order to be healed.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: You can just quit.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: You can just quit.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: And it might be hard, but it might be challenging from a biological standpoint, but not because you're weak, and not because you're powerless, because you are taking charge of your body to get your body back into homeostasis, back into balance.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: And it is gonna take a few days, maybe a few weeks, and over time things change and get drastically better.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: I'm here to help support you.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: I'm here to help bring awareness to the silly absurdities around the myths and the stigmas that go along with quitting drinking.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: You don't have to carry around a label.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: You do not have to carry around a label.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: You do not have to call yourself an alcoholic in order to repair your body, mind, soul, and relationships.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: Now, here's another notion that you have to admit that you're powerless, that you have to make amends.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: And listen, many, most of us do some stupid shit when we are under the influence when the GABA and the glutamate causes us to, you know, like you're wanting to take the edge off, and the edge comes off, and then pretty soon you might have like taken a little too much, which is not like it might be you're like, Oh, I'm gonna have another one because your body's like, Oh, yeah, okay, this is this is good, right?
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: This is good, then have another one, and then I don't want to cover up the microphone, and then the edge comes off, and you might blurt out something that okay, yeah, we'll get to that in a minute.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: The blurting out, the saying things, it's like I've heard ridiculousness of like that's when people's true selves come out, or or you know, like the the the inhibitions lower, and so then we're like, I can say anything, I can do anything, I can be anything.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: And for me, that was my inhibitions.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: I was like, I see my potential.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, I've got energy, I've got this, I've got that during it, but then after I'm like, what was my potential again?
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, I see it, but now it's a little far out of reach because I feel foggy, I'm like I'm discombobulated, I feel confused, I feel uh tired, I feel like shit, or I feel like I forgot some shit that seemed so clearer last night.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: Um that is the the neurotoxins and the neurochemistry fighting for what what's going on in there, and one of them wants to regulate, and the fastest, quickest way to regulate is to get more of the substance because your body stops producing.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: Who here has heard of melatonin?
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: Your body produces its own melatonin through the pineal gland, okay?
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: The third eye, the ajna.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: The melatonin is what gets us like sleepy and ready for thank you! Just got some mail, speedy delivery, mail delivery.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: Uh the the melatonin gets us ready for sleep and like cozy, calm down.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: But now melatonin is a one of the most popular substances uh that we can purchase.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: I was not gonna call it a substance, I was gonna call it a um supplement, a supplement.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: Like, oh, you need to supplement yourself with melatonin.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: If you can't sleep, especially if you're drinking and you can't sleep, uh, there's a vicious cycle gonna happen here.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: So you add melatonin, let's just leave it to melatonin, right?
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: You add melatonin into your regimen.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: Like, ooh, melatonin gets me ready for sleep, and then pretty soon you notice like it's not working as well anymore.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: Now I need more, I need a higher potency, I need a different brand, I need more, more, more, more.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: And over time you build up a tolerance and dependence to melatonin, and then it stops working as well, and you need more.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: Oh my messaging.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: I can remember all of this anyway.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: Um, okay, so tolerance, dependence.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: You're not broken.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: Okay, so the first step, the first step is to wake up.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: I have a three-pillar mantra.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: Wake up, wise up, rise up.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: And the waking up is wiping alcohol from the system.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: Like, all right, this isn't working for me, and whatever is not working for you.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: For me, it was blocking my spiritual like elevation.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: My I was putting all of this work into myself, like, oh, I'm going to do yoga, I'm journaling, I'm reading, I'm listening to podcasts, and I know there's something more for me, and I want to be more.
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: It had always been in there that alcohol was blocking that, but again, I I wanted to deny that because I had built a whole life around it, and I also thought I had the stigma and the the myth that like if I stop, people are gonna think something's wrong with me.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: I then I have to admit to like, oh, I had a problem with alcohol, and now I I and now I have to stop, and now I've gotta go to AA, and I have to call myself an alcoholic, and uh so I I I chose to get it out of the way.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: I was like, I'm waking up, ding ding ding, wake up call.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: Wake up call.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: And this is different from the 4 a.m.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: waking up.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: The wake-up call um is to quit drinking, and that is like, all right, let's just wipe this out of the way.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: There's mindset shift, there's reframing, there is replacement, um, there's somatic movement.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: I have this whole reservoir of resources that is there to help bridge the gap between, okay, I've decided that I'm gonna quit.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: And the first thing is that we are not emotionally broken, we are not gonna admit to being powerless, we are not going to shame and blame ourselves for becoming dependent upon a substance that is highly addictive.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: Okay, wising up is infusing ourselves with knowledge and wisdom, we're gonna understand what's going on in the body, we're gonna figure out the wisdom, the knowledge, the intellect that is behind this substance.
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: I like to use the analogy of if you put salt, water, milk, um, sand, dirt into your gas tank, your car, what do you think is gonna happen?
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: You think that car is gonna run optimally?
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: Do you think it's gonna run to the to the specifications that the manufacturer built it for?
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: Our bodies are built in in a certain way.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: And when you add certain substances in there, we're not we're not running at optimal optimal efficiency.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: Our synapses are not connecting, they're not firing, we are not wiring with our own system.
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: So when we learn about all of This, when we learn about the GABA and the glutamate and how to regulate those, which all which can then create function in the body, how the brain operates.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: This is science.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: It's science.
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: This is not about being an emotionally broken person.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: So the waking up is quitting, the wising up is infusing ourselves with knowledge and wisdom.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: And the rising up.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: This is the fun part.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: This is where we're like, ah, whoa, I do feel better.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: I feel better.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: And now, like, this is where the whole premise of Journey of the Bottle is to raise the consciousness of this planet.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: Like every single one of us that is uh running on top performance, and I'm not talking about hustle mentality.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: I'm not talking about like work harder, you know, like get yourself into like this, you know, machine uh robotics.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: It's about being um being your highest self, being in your highest potential, reaching your highest, like that's the ice machine.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: Life is transforming at much more quantum rapid rates without the substance in your body, and you cannot help but be more effective and efficient and self-trusting, self-loving, intuitive.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: Like things just start firing up and your awakening starts to happen.
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: And the rise up is then you're looking around, going, Whoa, I I have been in a twilight slumber, a fever dream, and and I'm getting back to life now.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: And whatever then comes to you, like it your spark will come back.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: It's inevitable.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: Science.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: Your life will change, your life will transform, you will become capable and alert and alive and enthusiastic about life.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: You will be able to reach your highest potential without the numbing of a substance that creates brain fog, sleeplessness, stress, and anxiety, all disabling effects that keep us from being highly functioning humans.
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: The rise up is the ripple effect.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: Your inevitable evolution will thrive under these new conditions.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: And that is how we make amends.
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: That is how we make amends.
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: The amending to our community, our family, ourselves.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: Let's actually said those all out of order, but let's just start.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: We're gonna amend the relationship with ourselves first and foremost.
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: Just by quitting, is like our body's gonna be like, woo, okay, and the soul is like, all right, here we go, here we go.
- 24:46SPEAKER_00: So that's an amending with yourself.
- 24:49SPEAKER_00: Then it's with your family, your friends, your community, your colleagues, the world, the ripple effect goes into effect.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: And so when we show up differently, like you don't have to walk around and be like, I'm so sorry for all the things that I did.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry.
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: I did this and I did this and I did this, I did this.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: Because let's just say that you do stupid shit all the time with or without alcohol.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: Let's say you've never had a drop of alcohol, you still can act like an asshole, you still can be road ragey, you can still cut people off, you can still say mean things to your kids, you can still be a human.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: Okay, but without this substance, you the whole thing that I just talked about the homeostasis, the rising up, the waking up, the calibration, the synapses firing, the wiring, the whole thing.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: You show up differently.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: You're sleeping better, you're eating better, you're feeling better, and so there inevitably your energetic frequency changes, and people notice, and they're like, Oh, you're different, you're different, and it's always a difference for the for the better.
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's how we make amends, all right.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: Uh, how's that?
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: Hopefully, this caught it's 10-11.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: I gotta go to a practitioner circle, visit me on my website.
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, you're on YouTube right now, or maybe you're listening via a podcast.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna be here every day.
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: This is my probably saying the same shit every day, uh, every morning.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: Um, and well, I'm gonna get on a roll, but my lofty goal for myself is to be like it's like the today show, right?
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: The today show I'm bringing a flipped narrative to the normalization, the myths, the stigmas, the untold truths about alcohol and addiction.
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: And I will be quoting from government agency websites, from um I'm just gonna be bringing you the news, but like good news.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: We're not here to talk about doom and gloom.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: This is a place for hope and inspiration.
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: Like, if you want the doom and the gloom and the the you know uh rehashing the past and talking about all the shitty things in your life and trauma and my childhood and this and that, and this is what I drank.
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: It's like, okay, well, listen, whether no one drank a drop in your family, I guarantee you had a traumatic childhood.
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: Okay, we'll talk about trauma, we'll talk about like all the things that give us excuses to you know to to continue to feed into the bullshit rhetoric that has been fed to us about that drinking is bad.
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: But then I'm gonna show you all of the glamorization too.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: Like, we're gonna really dig into the glamorization, the normalization of this, like how prevalent it is, like how good of a time this is over on this side, and then over here.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: Like, oh what you stop drinking.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 28:27SPEAKER_00: So I'm also gonna help you with that because it's a thing, it's just a thing.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: Even the even other people who don't drink, when you're like, you know, uh, oh, I don't drink or whatever.
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm gonna teach you or give you lots of tools from the reservoir on like how to how to walk around in the world and be totally, totally okay with not drinking and not feel like you have to make excuses for it, feel like you don't have to like hide it, feel like you don't have to pretend like you are drinking just to fit in.
