- 0:17Speaker 1: Now two on.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Two lead pass, join Lee up the glass.
- 0:20Speaker 1: It's good ten point long worn lead. At the midway

- 1:06Speaker 4: Number two South Carolina's fifty seven game FCC streak is over.
- 1:14Speaker 3: The Longhorns win it.
- 1:16Speaker 1: The final score Texas sixty six, South Carolina sixty two,
- 1:23Speaker 1: and then we all went home and watched the Super Bowl.
- 1:25Speaker 1: What a game that was, right, yeah, right, good afternoon, everybody.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Welcome to the program here on thirteen under the Zone.
- 1:36Speaker 1: My name is Craig Waite. Thanks very much for joining us.
- 1:39Speaker 1: US of course includes the producer put together that nice
- 1:42Speaker 1: highlight montage of that huge win for Texas women's basketball yesterday,
- 1:46Speaker 1: fourth rank Longhorns beating the number two South Carolina game Cocks,
- 1:52Speaker 1: ending their fifty seven game fifty seven game regular season
- 2:01Speaker 1: conference win streak. It's important to point that out because
- 2:03Speaker 1: they lost in the in the in their conference tournament
- 2:10Speaker 1: more recently than that, but still in all, it was
- 2:15Speaker 1: a huge win for Texas winning that one yesterday, sixty
- 2:18Speaker 1: six sixty two.
- 2:19Speaker 3: The long rune now twenty four and two.
- 2:21Speaker 1: They won eight in a row and they're tied for
- 2:23Speaker 1: first place atop the conference standings with South Carolina also
- 2:28Speaker 1: with LSU, and Kentucky can join that group with a
- 2:32Speaker 1: win tonight. As Kentucky plays Ole Miss, could be a
- 2:35Speaker 1: four way tie there, and of course Texas travels to
- 2:39Speaker 1: Kentucky to play the eleventh rank Wildcats tonight, so or
- 2:46Speaker 1: rather to play they travel to Texas travels to Kentucky.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Kentucky up to number eight in the rankings, and they
- 2:52Speaker 1: play at Ole Miss tonight. The new rankings are out
- 2:57Speaker 1: and Texas moved up one spot to number three, ahead
- 3:00Speaker 1: of South Carolina, dropped two spots to four. Texas trails
- 3:04Speaker 1: Notre Dame, who beat Texas this year in overtime up
- 3:06Speaker 1: in South Bend back in December, and Ucla still the
- 3:10Speaker 1: unbeat number one, but the Long runs up to number
- 3:12Speaker 1: three in the national ranking.
- 3:13Speaker 3: So that was in the early part of the day.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Then we all went home and we were treated to
- 3:21Speaker 1: Super Bowl fifty nine, which was a real treat if
- 3:23Speaker 1: you're an Eagles fan.
- 3:25Speaker 3: If you're a Chiefs fan, definitely was not.
- 3:27Speaker 1: And if you just wanted to see a good game,
- 3:29Speaker 1: you didn't have much there on that. There's a lot
- 3:34Speaker 1: of opinions about the game, the halftime show, the ads,
- 3:39Speaker 1: all of that.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Sort of stuff.
- 3:40Speaker 1: So we always invite the input, the opinion, the perspective.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Our producer Cameron D.
- 3:46Speaker 5: Parker.
- 3:47Speaker 3: The D in the birth certificate stands for.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Dallas, as in the Dallas Cowboys, who saw another NFC
- 3:52Speaker 1: East team win a Super Bowl, who also saw their
- 3:57Speaker 1: former offensive ordinator Kellen Moore be in line for the
- 4:02Speaker 1: Saints head coaching job. How do you feel about that?
- 4:05Speaker 1: By the way, you weren't really big on Kellen Moore
- 4:09Speaker 1: being a candidate for the Cowboys. If I remember, he's
- 4:11Speaker 1: better off just staying in Philadelphia. Yeah, instead of taking
- 4:16Speaker 1: the Saints job.
- 4:17Speaker 6: I would not want to go work for that organization
- 4:20Speaker 6: currently and their roster and what they have the next
- 4:24Speaker 6: two years coming up in terms of salary cap. They
- 4:27Speaker 6: are in salary cap hell for the next two three
- 4:29Speaker 6: four years, I think. Yeah, obviously not a great culture
- 4:33Speaker 6: there that's been left in place ever since Sean Payton
- 4:36Speaker 6: was let go. They've gone through what this would be
- 4:38Speaker 6: the third head coach since Sean Payton. Yeah, just does
- 4:41Speaker 6: not seem like a great place to go win football
- 4:43Speaker 6: games at. So if I were Kellen Moore, I would
- 4:45Speaker 6: stay in Philadelphia, you know, continue the coach Jalen Hurts
- 4:49Speaker 6: and Saquon and that fantastic offensive line and AJ Brown
- 4:52Speaker 6: and Goddard and Defonte Smith. You have, but you know
- 4:54Speaker 6: you're gonna have a great defense on the other side
- 4:56Speaker 6: of the field. You know why I leave that. You know,
- 4:59Speaker 6: wait wait another year or two until coaching, until a
- 5:04Speaker 6: game comes up or a team comes up rather that
- 5:06Speaker 6: you want to coach for. I wouldn't settle for the Saints.
- 5:09Speaker 6: But okay, that's just my opinion. You know, maybe killing
- 5:12Speaker 6: Moore just really really wants to be a.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Head coach could be and we'll see where it leads
- 5:17Speaker 1: from there. Meanwhile, I can't remember if you picked the Chiefs.
- 5:24Speaker 1: I picked the Eagles. I don't think I had an
- 5:25Speaker 1: official pick. Okay, I picked the Eagles, but I picked
- 5:28Speaker 1: like twenty seven to twenty four. I don't know of
- 5:30Speaker 1: anybody that would have picked what happened yesterday. And if
- 5:34Speaker 1: people say they did, then they're either a genius or
- 5:37Speaker 1: they're lying one or the other, because I don't think
- 5:39Speaker 1: anybody saw that coming yesterday. And it begs the question,
- 5:46Speaker 1: what was more eye opening the way the Eagles played
- 5:51Speaker 1: what is being described as nearly a perfect game, or
- 5:54Speaker 1: the Chiefs looking absolutely awful. And I think that's probably
- 5:59Speaker 1: what a lot of people that you know, I watched.
- 6:01Speaker 1: I always watch all of the heavy duty post game coverage,
- 6:08Speaker 1: the news conferences, the reports, the live interviews, all that
- 6:11Speaker 1: kind of stuff, and it was a while before we
- 6:15Speaker 1: got to hear from the Chiefs.
- 6:17Speaker 3: There was so much that was about the.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Eagles and interviewing not only Nick Sirianni, not only him,
- 6:26Speaker 1: but in Jalen Hurts and other Eagles players as well.
- 6:30Speaker 3: But there was a lot of.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Analysis and post analysis and additional analysis and all that
- 6:35Speaker 1: before we ever, I think it was almost midnight before
- 6:38Speaker 1: I finally saw the press conference, or at least parts
- 6:43Speaker 1: of the press conference with both Patrick mahomes and and.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Also Andy Reid seeing them.
- 6:52Speaker 1: And to their credit, they did give credit and deference
- 6:56Speaker 1: to the Eagles for playing an extremely good game. And
- 6:59Speaker 1: then of course they added and I think it's this
- 7:01Speaker 1: is certainly fair to say we didn't we didn't play well,
- 7:04Speaker 1: and we did a lot of things wrong. I mean,
- 7:06Speaker 1: Travis Kelsey pointed out about drop passes. He had two
- 7:09Speaker 1: of them, and so there was, you know, that that
- 7:12Speaker 1: sort of thing. But it is it is kind of
- 7:17Speaker 1: interesting to note, when you get a game like that,
- 7:22Speaker 1: how much of it is what the Eagles did and
- 7:24Speaker 1: how much of it is what the Chiefs did to themselves?
- 7:26Speaker 1: And I think the answer is somewhere in between, really,
- 7:28Speaker 1: because there were some unforced errors by the Chiefs in
- 7:31Speaker 1: the game, but that Eagles defense really just constantly harassed
- 7:36Speaker 1: and pressured Patrick Mahomes into making mistakes that he normally
- 7:40Speaker 1: does not make. That you know, the the not the
- 7:44Speaker 1: pick six by Cooper de Gene, but the one right
- 7:45Speaker 1: before the half to set up the other score was
- 7:49Speaker 1: one where he just had a body falling into him,
- 7:52Speaker 1: hands in his face, and he still kind of did
- 7:55Speaker 1: a little panic throw. And that was one thing I
- 7:57Speaker 1: think that Mahomes we haven't really seen him do, not
- 8:02Speaker 1: in large measure anyway, and it was kind of a
- 8:05Speaker 1: panic throw it and it got picked off and it
- 8:07Speaker 1: set up the touchdown to make a twenty four to nothing,
- 8:09Speaker 1: and that was pretty much it at that point.
- 8:12Speaker 3: But it was it was.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Impressive to see what the Eagles defense did in that game.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Let me also say, as a Rams pan it makes
- 8:19Speaker 1: me feel good that the Rams played them better than
- 8:22Speaker 1: anybody did in the postseason. Actually had a chance to
- 8:25Speaker 1: win the game. They're in Philadelphia. Eight but that and
- 8:28Speaker 1: four point fifty will get you coffee at Starbucks. Except today,
- 8:32Speaker 1: by the way, it's free coffee day at Starvest, so
- 8:35Speaker 1: you could do it all the way home.
- 8:38Speaker 3: It's all day to day free coffee day for this spot.
- 8:41Speaker 1: And they did a little design on there that said
- 8:44Speaker 1: enjoy with it, a little smiley faced thing on it.
- 8:47Speaker 3: So anyway, so you know, but they I thought.
- 8:51Speaker 1: The Eagles were incredibly impressive and it was I think, what,
- 8:55Speaker 1: at least, at the risk of recency bias, one of
- 9:00Speaker 1: the best total team performances we've seen in the.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Super Bowl, at least in quite some time. Anyway, Yeah,
- 9:08Speaker 3: I agree.
- 9:08Speaker 6: I thought the going into this game it felt like
- 9:11Speaker 6: the Philadelphia Eager Eagles by far had the better roster,
- 9:15Speaker 6: but there was always that, well, you know, there's Patrick Mahomes,
- 9:19Speaker 6: and you don't want to bet against Pat Mahomes. And
- 9:22Speaker 6: we saw the last two Super Bowls against Philadelphia in
- 9:24Speaker 6: San Francisco where I felt like the Chiefs weren't the
- 9:27Speaker 6: better team in either of those games, yet they somehow
- 9:30Speaker 6: found a way to win. And I think maybe some
- 9:32Speaker 6: of that also could be just Eagles in San Francisco
- 9:36Speaker 6: were maybe not afraid of the Chiefs, but it's you know,
- 9:39Speaker 6: they're like, oh boy, here's Pat Mahomes and Andy Reid
- 9:42Speaker 6: in this this incredible offense, in this defense, and it
- 9:46Speaker 6: felt like Philadelphia played this game like, yeah, we're not
- 9:49Speaker 6: a fred of you, Like we should have won the
- 9:50Speaker 6: first time around. And our team is better. We're better defensively,
- 9:54Speaker 6: better offensively. We have one of the best defensive coordinators
- 9:58Speaker 6: in all of offense. We have a healthy Jalen Hurts, and
- 10:01Speaker 6: it showed. And for Kansas City to win that game
- 10:04Speaker 6: last night, you know, Patrick Mahomes probably had to play
- 10:07Speaker 6: a perfect game, and I think a lot of us
- 10:08Speaker 6: just expected him to do so because we've seen it
- 10:10Speaker 6: time and time and time again in the postseason this year,
- 10:13Speaker 6: last year, or two years ago, even when they lost
- 10:16Speaker 6: to the Buccaneers. They didn't have a great offensive line,
- 10:18Speaker 6: but they still got to the Super Bowl, and the
- 10:20Speaker 6: Super Bowl was exactly like the one they lost to
- 10:22Speaker 6: Tampa Bay and Tom Brady. The defensive line of Philadelphia
- 10:26Speaker 6: controlled this game. Their offensive line controlled this game, and
- 10:29Speaker 6: that's how it played out. And Mahomes, he threw two
- 10:33Speaker 6: awful interceptions and you could argue, Yeah, you know, that
- 10:37Speaker 6: was a lot that had to do with the pressure.
- 10:38Speaker 6: Philadelphia got pressure on Mahomes and got into him where
- 10:40Speaker 6: he didn't make a perfect throw. But Mahomes also played
- 10:43Speaker 6: awful in this game until the fourth quarter when it
- 10:46Speaker 6: looked like Case had their two and three stingers in.
- 10:49Speaker 6: So Mahomes did not play a perfect game, the better
- 10:52Speaker 6: team did win, and football season sadly has come to
- 10:57Speaker 6: an end with a very anti climatic Super Bowl.
- 11:01Speaker 1: All right, you bring up some other interesting points I
- 11:04Speaker 1: want to get to, and we want to offer it
- 11:06Speaker 1: up there for those who would like to text into
- 11:08Speaker 1: the program. All you have to do is text the
- 11:10Speaker 1: word Texas followed by your question or comment to eight
- 11:13Speaker 1: one five to three zero. Again, you text the word
- 11:15Speaker 1: Texas followed by your question or comment to eight one
- 11:18Speaker 1: to five to three zero. Standard messaging and data rates
- 11:21Speaker 1: may apply. You can text in on a variety of things.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Your thoughts on the Super Bowl, your thoughts on the
- 11:27Speaker 1: Eagles where they're placed in history. For that matter, the Chiefs,
- 11:31Speaker 1: who in the Mahomes era are three and two in
- 11:35Speaker 1: Super Bowls, three close call wins and two absolute wipeout losses.
- 11:42Speaker 3: What does that say not.
- 11:45Speaker 1: You can say in specific about Mahomes, but about the
- 11:48Speaker 1: Chiefs overall. Also, did you have a favorite Super Bowl lad?
- 11:55Speaker 1: I don't know if favorite really fits it. I was
- 11:59Speaker 1: a little under by that. And I know folks will
- 12:01Speaker 1: have their own thoughts on the halftime performance as well.
- 12:04Speaker 1: I've got my thoughts on that as well, So.
- 12:06Speaker 3: We'll get told of that.
- 12:07Speaker 1: We're gonna hear also later on in the three o'clock hour,
- 12:10Speaker 1: we'll hear from Rodney Terry, Texas pen's basketball coach, and
- 12:14Speaker 1: we'll hear from Vick Schaeffer, Texas women's coach, on that
- 12:18Speaker 1: big win for the Longhorns yesterday. So we'll hear from
- 12:23Speaker 1: the two head coaches this afternoon. We'll get to your questions,
- 12:27Speaker 1: your thoughts on our text line. Glad to have you
- 12:29Speaker 1: with us on a Monday here on thirteen hundred the Zone.
- 12:38Speaker 7: It's the Craig Way Show with the Voice of the
- 12:41Speaker 7: Texas Longhords in Hall of Vame broadcaster Craig Way.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Happy to have you.
- 12:54Speaker 3: With us on a Monday.
- 12:57Speaker 1: I know a lot of people. We just heard Cameron
- 12:59Speaker 1: Parkers say sad that football.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Has ended.
- 13:05Speaker 1: I take a look a look at that. In a
- 13:09Speaker 1: different light. But I'm in a different world than you know,
- 13:15Speaker 1: the vast majority of the people listening to this program,
- 13:17Speaker 1: because you know, I work on a seasonal calendar.
- 13:22Speaker 3: So football comes and football goes.
- 13:26Speaker 1: And then basketball comes, and basketball goes, and baseball comes
- 13:30Speaker 1: and baseball goes. In other words, I moved to the
- 13:34Speaker 1: next event. It doesn't mean I don't miss it that
- 13:37Speaker 1: sort of thing, But I don't know. Maybe there's some
- 13:39Speaker 1: sort of physiological thing that happens inside of me. When
- 13:44Speaker 1: football's done, I'm kind of mentally ready to move to
- 13:48Speaker 1: the next thing. It rolls back to that same deal
- 13:50Speaker 1: when and I've asked, I've told this story before, whenever
- 13:54Speaker 1: somebody asked me, what's my favorite sport to call? I said,
- 13:57Speaker 1: I always give it the cop out answer, But there
- 13:59Speaker 1: is truth in the cop out answer. The cop out
- 14:02Speaker 1: answer is whatever's in season. But the truth part of
- 14:06Speaker 1: it is when I'm in that specific season, that's what
- 14:10Speaker 1: it feels like I'm supposed to be doing. In other words,
- 14:14Speaker 1: when I'm in September, I'm not thinking about calling college baseball.
- 14:21Speaker 1: When it is deep February, I'm not really thinking about
- 14:26Speaker 1: football that much. And when it's you know, March, or
- 14:33Speaker 1: or no, when it's June. If I'm in Omah, I'm
- 14:37Speaker 1: not thinking about the NCAA basketball tournament. It's whatever you're
- 14:41Speaker 1: supposed to be doing at the time, is how it
- 14:43Speaker 1: kind of reconciles itself with me. But I do get
- 14:47Speaker 1: when people miss pro footballer goes away. Hey, listen, it's
- 14:50Speaker 1: for that reason that the UFL exists, right, And there
- 14:54Speaker 1: are some people who simply can't get enough of football,
- 14:57Speaker 1: so spring football is around the corner for them in
- 15:02Speaker 1: terms of the professional side of it. Are you interested
- 15:06Speaker 1: all in the UFL? Do you watch it?
- 15:08Speaker 2: See?
- 15:08Speaker 3: And I don't. I really don't.
- 15:10Speaker 1: I mean, if it's all I might look for a
- 15:11Speaker 1: few minutes or whatever, but I'm not. Yeah, I'm not
- 15:16Speaker 1: really into it. Maybe if we had a team in
- 15:18Speaker 1: this town or whatever. Maybe I don't know, but spring
- 15:23Speaker 1: football just doesn't register with me on the professional level.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Spring football college practices that's a different thing in tier
- 15:30Speaker 1: because that's all season work that's going on, and even
- 15:33Speaker 1: that we're hearing may undergo change. There's, you know, a
- 15:39Speaker 1: growing chance that we may not have a spring football
- 15:41Speaker 1: game this year, and that is simply because of the
- 15:44Speaker 1: way the calendar is working. And the poaching that can
- 15:47Speaker 1: happen on college rosters and the transfer porter and everything else,
- 15:50Speaker 1: and that college programs across the country may move away
- 15:54Speaker 1: from actual spring games some perhaps even maybe even away
- 15:58Speaker 1: from spring practice other than to have like say, off
- 16:02Speaker 1: season type conditioning like they do in the NFL.
- 16:04Speaker 3: Those kinds of things. I don't know.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Time will tell on those on that front, if we
- 16:08Speaker 1: have those kinds of things happen, that could happen. But
- 16:14Speaker 1: in the meantime, like I said, you just kind of
- 16:16Speaker 1: feel like, maybe, you know, maybe this time you move
- 16:21Speaker 1: on to the next thing, especially after that dominating performance
- 16:24Speaker 1: that the Eagles gave yesterday in the win over the Chiefs.
- 16:27Speaker 1: So this begs the question a lot of things you
- 16:31Speaker 1: knew this was going to happen, Cameron, especially after as
- 16:35Speaker 1: lopsided the game as it was yesterday, that folks would
- 16:39Speaker 1: definitely come right back in weigh in with it and say,
- 16:43Speaker 1: all right, get ready, now the Eagles are on the.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Threshold of a dynasty.
- 16:48Speaker 1: They said that last year after the Chiefs won two
- 16:50Speaker 1: in a row, no reason why they can't make it
- 16:52Speaker 1: become the first team in the NFL history to win
- 16:55Speaker 1: three in a row. Well, yeah, there is simply because
- 16:57Speaker 1: they have been done, because it's very, very difficult to do.
- 17:00Speaker 1: The last team to win three consecutive NFL titles was
- 17:03Speaker 1: the Green Bay Packers, and the first of those was
- 17:06Speaker 1: the year before the Super Bowl started.
- 17:08Speaker 3: They beat the Browns.
- 17:10Speaker 1: If they had had a Super Bowl that year, nineteen
- 17:13Speaker 1: sixty five, they would have played the Buffalo Bills, a
- 17:15Speaker 1: good Buffalo team in a first ever Super Bowl, but
- 17:19Speaker 1: that didn't happen, and start the Super Bowl till the
- 17:22Speaker 1: next year, and the Packers won the NFL title over
- 17:25Speaker 1: the Cowboys and then beat the Chiefs in Super Bowl one,
- 17:28Speaker 1: and then beat the Cowboys in the Ice Bowl the
- 17:30Speaker 1: following year, sixty seven, to make it three straight NFL titles,
- 17:34Speaker 1: something the Packers are very proud of to this day,
- 17:38Speaker 1: and then beat the Raiders in Super Bowl two. That's
- 17:42Speaker 1: the closest we've come to having three straight world champions.
- 17:45Speaker 1: But you know, again, one of them was pre Super Bowl.
- 17:49Speaker 1: There has never been a three peat Super Bowl winner,
- 17:53Speaker 1: and I don't know if the ball ever had one,
- 17:55Speaker 1: or at least not for some time. I think this
- 18:00Speaker 1: Chief excuse me, I think this Chiefs team was as
- 18:06Speaker 1: well equipped to do it as about any but they
- 18:11Speaker 1: ran into an Eagles team that's built on defense in
- 18:13Speaker 1: the run game, and even though the Chiefs made a
- 18:17Speaker 1: concerted effort to take Saquon Barkley out of the game
- 18:20Speaker 1: or ensure that he wasn't a factor, Jalen Hurts established
- 18:24Speaker 1: himself in the run game himself. I believe he became
- 18:28Speaker 1: was it the second quarterback in NFL history.
- 18:33Speaker 3: To individually lead both teams in rushing.
- 18:38Speaker 1: He had more rushing guards than any other player for
- 18:41Speaker 1: the Eagles or for the Chiefs. There's only one other
- 18:43Speaker 1: guy who did that, Steve Young, who did that for
- 18:46Speaker 1: the forty nine Ers when they beat the Chargers in
- 18:48Speaker 1: the Super Bowl. So they found other ways around. Plus
- 18:52Speaker 1: he was able to hit downhill, throw downfield throws, and
- 18:57Speaker 1: they were very opportunistic. They have the pick six by
- 19:00Speaker 1: Cooper de Jean, They had, you know, the other turnovers
- 19:03Speaker 1: that set up scores. They had short fields to work with,
- 19:07Speaker 1: and as champions can do, they can take advantage of
- 19:09Speaker 1: it and make you pay. So so that's where the
- 19:14Speaker 1: Eagles set up. So now the question is what becomes
- 19:18Speaker 1: of the Chiefs? Are they you know, Mahomes said in
- 19:22Speaker 1: the press conference yesterday that they there's still a young
- 19:29Speaker 1: football team that can come back and be ready to go.
- 19:31Speaker 1: They do have some veterans on that group, some long
- 19:34Speaker 1: and the two veterans like Kelsey and a couple other guys,
- 19:37Speaker 1: but DeAndre Hopkins is one of those guys, by the way,
- 19:44Speaker 1: And incidentally, we didn't get the seaxavior worthy. Haven't ically
- 19:47Speaker 1: what it was? One hundred and fifty seven receiving yards
- 19:49Speaker 1: on the two tight chasses. Yeah, now, the vast majority
- 19:53Speaker 1: that was after the fact and the issue had been
- 19:56Speaker 1: long decided, but still good to see X do that.
- 20:00Speaker 1: So where does this Chiefs team factor in? They're good
- 20:03Speaker 1: enough to come back and win, bounce back and win
- 20:05Speaker 1: again like they did after losing the Tampa Bay or
- 20:10Speaker 1: will it be out for a while or have we
- 20:13Speaker 1: seen them hit their zenith? I think as long as
- 20:16Speaker 1: Mahomes is there, they've got a shot. But it'll be
- 20:19Speaker 1: interesting to see what Andy Reid and what the organization
- 20:21Speaker 1: does in terms of its pieces of this group.
- 20:24Speaker 6: Yeah, as long as Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid are
- 20:26Speaker 6: still there, they're always going to have a chance to contend.
- 20:29Speaker 6: But I think this does show and send a message
- 20:32Speaker 6: to the rest of the league including the Baltimore Ravens,
- 20:34Speaker 6: Buffalo Bills. That, yeah, this Chiefs team is beatable. You
- 20:38Speaker 6: just got to get out of your own way. And
- 20:40Speaker 6: also have a pretty darn good offensive and defensive line,
- 20:44Speaker 6: which is easier said than done for Kse. It is
- 20:47Speaker 6: interesting because they go into this offseason with with some
- 20:51Speaker 6: big free agents coming up. Nick Bolton, who the former
- 20:54Speaker 6: of Missouri product who played a huge role in their
- 20:56Speaker 6: win over Philly the first time. He'll be an unrestricted
- 20:59Speaker 6: free agent, A handful of guys on the offensive line
- 21:03Speaker 6: defensive line also free agents. Amna who is one of those,
- 21:07Speaker 6: Trey Smith, the right guard, Justin Reid the safety already
- 21:11Speaker 6: mentioned a Mena who Dj Humphries will be a free agent,
- 21:15Speaker 6: Mike Pennell a free agent. So they're going to have
- 21:17Speaker 6: a lot of guys who will be free agents and
- 21:19Speaker 6: some other guys who are up for extensions as well.
- 21:22Speaker 6: They're probably gonna have to, you know, address these issues.
- 21:25Speaker 6: But it always comes back down to do they have
- 21:29Speaker 6: Patrick Mahomes. They do, then okay, they still have a
- 21:31Speaker 6: chance to win. So I mean going in the next season,
- 21:34Speaker 6: you know, I mean people were still picking against the
- 21:36Speaker 6: Chiefs this year and you know, they prove them wrong
- 21:39Speaker 6: going in the next season. I still think the Chiefs
- 21:41Speaker 6: will be a popular pick. And I think Buffalo and
- 21:44Speaker 6: Baltimore have better rosters than the Chiefs, but they don't
- 21:47Speaker 6: have Patrick Mahomes. So next year will be interesting. But
- 21:50Speaker 6: if your bill's a Ravens fan, you feel pretty good.
- 21:52Speaker 6: If you're Chiefs fan, you know, Okay, your run has
- 21:55Speaker 6: come to an end. You still got two super Bowls though,
- 21:58Speaker 6: and still will be in a good place next season.
- 22:00Speaker 6: But you're going to have to, you know, make some
- 22:02Speaker 6: moves on the offensive line to you know, protect Patrick Mahomes.
- 22:06Speaker 6: It was the downfall for them when they lost to
- 22:08Speaker 6: Tom Brady the Buccaneers, and it was a downfall for
- 22:10Speaker 6: them last night. And also this receiving call. You know,
- 22:14Speaker 6: Nicole Hardman, Juju, DeAndre Hopkins, Hollywood Brown. Those guys are
- 22:18Speaker 6: free agents.
- 22:19Speaker 2: You know.
- 22:19Speaker 6: Xavier Worthy is the only one who I believe is
- 22:21Speaker 6: under a contract extension or under a contract rather that
- 22:24Speaker 6: rookie contract. So how are you going to address the
- 22:27Speaker 6: receiver position? Travis Kelce, you know, another year older. He
- 22:30Speaker 6: didn't look young in spry last night. That's for sure.
- 22:33Speaker 6: That's the spot they got to work on the running
- 22:35Speaker 6: back position as well. You know, they kind of just
- 22:36Speaker 6: address it as a ghost. To adrep Ryan, the former
- 22:39Speaker 6: Hendrickson Hawk, he'll be a free agent. He had a
- 22:41Speaker 6: lot of playing time last night. Pacheck go out there
- 22:44Speaker 6: as well. So it'll be a very interesting offseason. But
- 22:48Speaker 6: you know, they answer your question, Greig, as long as
- 22:49Speaker 6: they do have Pat Mahomes and Andrew Reid, then you
- 22:52Speaker 6: feel pretty good about them.
- 22:53Speaker 1: But this roster does have flaws. We'll get to more
- 22:57Speaker 1: on the the Chiefs, the Eagles of Super recap and
- 23:00Speaker 1: all that up next. We have Inconceivable, which has some
- 23:03Speaker 1: Super Bowl notes to which when we continue here on
- 23:06Speaker 1: thirteen under the Zone on this postpartum Super Bowl Monday,
- 23:11Speaker 1: there are you feeling a little post football depression?
- 23:16Speaker 5: There?
- 23:17Speaker 6: Cameron Is said it was sad. I'm not film depression.
- 23:21Speaker 6: I'm excited for basketball and baseball, so am I?
- 23:24Speaker 3: So am I?
- 23:25Speaker 1: Baseball? Of course, softball off to a great start. Six
- 23:28Speaker 1: and oh the number one ranked Texas softball team. How
- 23:31Speaker 1: about that weird schedule they had over the weekend. They
- 23:34Speaker 1: played six games against six different teams in six consecutive days,
- 23:42Speaker 1: I mean, in three consecutive days, excuse me Friday, Saturday
- 23:45Speaker 1: Sunday in three different cities. They started off in laugh
- 23:49Speaker 1: at Louisiana on Friday, they beat Long Longwood run rule
- 23:54Speaker 1: to make nothing in five innings. Then they run ruled
- 23:58Speaker 1: the home standing rate and cagns of Louisiana on Friday.
- 24:02Speaker 1: They moved west down I ten to Beaumont on Saturday
- 24:09Speaker 1: and beat Houston and Lamar back to back and then
- 24:12Speaker 1: went up by forty five to Huntsville and beat Tulsa
- 24:18Speaker 1: and then.
- 24:20Speaker 3: Beat Sam Houston. So they're off to a six oh start.
- 24:22Speaker 1: They'll have their first games coming this week in the
- 24:24Speaker 1: BVO Classic, so Mike White's team off to a good start.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Long Worn Baseball opens its season on Friday in Arlington
- 24:33Speaker 1: at the Shriner's Hospital for Children Classic, their Globalife Field.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Texas will play Louisville Friday night at seven, They'll play
- 24:41Speaker 1: Ole Miss Saturday night, and they'll play Oklahoma State Sunday evening,
- 24:46Speaker 1: and so look forward to bringing you those games here
- 24:51Speaker 1: on thirteen under the Zone. So we have those games
- 24:53Speaker 1: for you throughout the course of the weekend. Texas women
- 24:56Speaker 1: with a gigantic win yesterday beating South Carolina in Folks
- 24:59Speaker 1: of us. This is the significance of it. Right now,
- 25:03Speaker 1: I would say this, there was already uh, some bracketological
- 25:10Speaker 1: prognostication out there, the main there there are two or
- 25:14Speaker 1: three different sets of bracketology that I follow, uh for
- 25:23Speaker 1: women's basketball, and about four or five for men's basketball.
- 25:29Speaker 3: And the win for Texas yesterday.
- 25:34Speaker 1: It's interesting because there was a there was an article
- 25:39Speaker 1: that said, you know, what does that mean for Texas? Well,
- 25:41Speaker 1: it means that, first of all, they moved up to
- 25:43Speaker 1: number three with the win. They became the first team
- 25:47Speaker 1: to win an AP Top five matchup without making a
- 25:50Speaker 1: three pointer since Yukon went over nine and a win
- 25:53Speaker 1: against Oklahom in the two thousand and two National Championship game.
- 25:56Speaker 1: This is not a prolific three point shooting team. We
- 25:59Speaker 1: pointed that out. They have some decent three point numbers,
- 26:02Speaker 1: but they don't shoot that much of it, and they
- 26:07Speaker 1: it was pretty impressive. They're now twenty four and two
- 26:10Speaker 1: and Madison Booker had the double double yesterday. We'll hear
- 26:14Speaker 1: from her a little bit later on, but it was
- 26:17Speaker 1: a it was a big It was a big win
- 26:21Speaker 1: there for Texas in that in the win over South
- 26:24Speaker 1: Carolina yesterday, and I like what don Staley had to
- 26:29Speaker 1: say when she said that, you know, we're it talking
- 26:33Speaker 1: about it right now, saying that that women's basketball on
- 26:39Speaker 1: Super Bowl Sunday from the do that that that shows
- 26:43Speaker 1: what they've been, you know, what they've come up with,
- 26:46Speaker 1: uh and and how good they've been. So it was
- 26:48Speaker 1: a good win for tax has no question about they.
- 26:50Speaker 1: It doesn't get any easier though. They have to go
- 26:52Speaker 1: to Kentucky on Thursday. In Kentucky's number eight in the country.
- 26:57Speaker 1: They only have one SEC loss now they played at
- 27:00Speaker 1: ole Miss. Assuming they win that game at ole Miss,
- 27:03Speaker 1: there'll be a four way tie for first Texas, South Carolina, LSU,
- 27:08Speaker 1: and Kentucky and the Longhorns next two games are Kentucky
- 27:11Speaker 1: and LSU at Kentucky on Thursday, the LSU on Sunday afternoon.
- 27:14Speaker 1: So the challenges continue for the Longhorns. But as I
- 27:18Speaker 1: started to say, what they did do to help themselves
- 27:22Speaker 1: out quite a bit is to put themselves in position
- 27:30Speaker 1: perhaps to be a number one seed. I would think
- 27:35Speaker 1: that they probably need to win one of the next
- 27:42Speaker 1: two games. These next two games, not necessarily both, but
- 27:46Speaker 1: I would say they would need to win at least
- 27:48Speaker 1: one of the next two and then win the last
- 27:50Speaker 1: three games. They'll be favored to win those last three
- 27:52Speaker 1: games in the regular season. That would take them into
- 27:55Speaker 1: the postseason at twenty.
- 27:58Speaker 3: Eight and three.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Going into the conference tournament, and they'd stand a real
- 28:03Speaker 1: good shot to be a number one seed.
- 28:06Speaker 3: So we'll see.
- 28:08Speaker 1: With regard to the men, it's back to back losses
- 28:11Speaker 1: and they'll try to get back after it tomorrow night
- 28:14Speaker 1: against number two Alabama. On the text line, clean up
- 28:17Speaker 1: from our number one. So I said that my theory
- 28:23Speaker 1: on the Longhorn men's woes is that by this time
- 28:26Speaker 1: of the season Rodney Terry is so hoarse that his
- 28:29Speaker 1: players can't understand him, much like John Dutton in seasons
- 28:32Speaker 1: four and five of Yellowstone. I will admit to you
- 28:36Speaker 1: that I haven't seen Yellowstone, so I don't know, but
- 28:39Speaker 1: I get what you're saying. With RT, he's been fighting
- 28:42Speaker 1: through it for sure. He was also sick for a
- 28:44Speaker 1: time too, and that doesn't help. So we'll hear some
- 28:50Speaker 1: from Rodney coming up in the next segment. Also on
- 28:54Speaker 1: the text line, somebody had said this morning to the
- 28:58Speaker 1: morning kickoff, guys, men's basketball maybe could take a few
- 29:02Speaker 1: lessons from women also, as long as the referees were
- 29:05Speaker 1: consistently bad for both teams, I'm okay with that. I
- 29:09Speaker 1: don't know if bad is the proper phrase. I I
- 29:13Speaker 1: would say this. I say this every year, and usually
- 29:16Speaker 1: it's about this time of year, and especially when we
- 29:18Speaker 1: get into the NCAA Tournament in March, or a conference
- 29:20Speaker 1: tournament and then NCAA Tournament March. If you are not
- 29:25Speaker 1: a regular viewer of women's college basketball, in other words,
- 29:30Speaker 1: you know, you don't watch a whole bunch of games.
- 29:32Speaker 1: You might see a game here or there, especially if
- 29:34Speaker 1: you're a long worn fan, whatever. If you don't watch
- 29:36Speaker 1: a lot of it, you're going to be surprised at
- 29:41Speaker 1: the lack of top flight officiating. Let me just put
- 29:45Speaker 1: it that way.
- 29:46Speaker 3: This is not to say.
- 29:47Speaker 1: They're all terrible or they're all bad, because they aren't.
- 29:50Speaker 1: But there's enough of a thread of inconsistency in the
- 29:55Speaker 1: officiating of the women's game that the cash visual fan
- 30:01Speaker 1: or the casual viewer looked like, go, wow, yeah, that's
- 30:06Speaker 1: that's just how it is. And we see a lot
- 30:09Speaker 1: of the same officials work in the same games big
- 30:11Speaker 1: games as well too. There's a few who are really
- 30:15Speaker 1: really good. The Cantor's a Hall of Famer. She's been
- 30:17Speaker 1: at a long time. I think she was doing the
- 30:20Speaker 1: l s U. Tennessee game yesterday. There's some other ones
- 30:24Speaker 1: who are really, really good. The three who were working
- 30:28Speaker 1: a game of the magnitude of Texas South Carolina yesterday.
- 30:32Speaker 3: Eh, some of them.
- 30:34Speaker 1: Okay, you know, I think Brian Small is a pretty
- 30:39Speaker 1: good official. Kevin Petel, I'm kind of ambivalent about. So,
- 30:45Speaker 1: you know, the problem is that some some games they
- 30:49Speaker 1: look really good. In some games that they don't. They
- 30:51Speaker 1: just they just don't. And I had it explained to
- 30:53Speaker 1: me a long time ago when by a former Big
- 30:59Speaker 1: twelve comite who told me when I asked him about
- 31:04Speaker 1: the inconsistency in women's basketball officiating, he said, we can't
- 31:07Speaker 1: get enough quality officials elevated enough, because not enough for
- 31:10Speaker 1: applying at the base level to start their training to
- 31:12Speaker 1: get good. And that's why we see a lot of
- 31:14Speaker 1: the same ones over and over. And I think it
- 31:16Speaker 1: still holds true today. There are some really good ones
- 31:18Speaker 1: out there, there really are, and then there's some that's
- 31:22Speaker 1: they're just you could see it game by game, you
- 31:24Speaker 1: can see the inconsistency there.
- 31:26Speaker 3: So I think that's part of it. With regard to
- 31:28Speaker 3: the Super Bowl.
- 31:28Speaker 1: Somebody on the text line said, instead of the second half,
- 31:35Speaker 1: watched the first half of the game, but instead of
- 31:37Speaker 1: the second half, I watched a Cannon and Colombo double
- 31:40Speaker 1: header on TV Land, and it was just a delight.
- 31:43Speaker 1: I'll bet you Cameron Parker has no idea what Cannon
- 31:46Speaker 1: and Colombo were. Do you know I remember Columbo? You
- 31:49Speaker 1: do Canadon. I don't know, Okay, detective shows. Cannon a
- 31:58Speaker 1: was a detective guy, William Conrad. Colombo, of course was
- 32:04Speaker 1: Peter Falk always had the trench code on I beg
- 32:07Speaker 1: your pardon. One f could to ask you a couple
- 32:08Speaker 1: of questions. You got a nice place, you got here,
- 32:11Speaker 1: one more thing, and then he would nail the person
- 32:15Speaker 1: on that.
- 32:16Speaker 3: So I could.
- 32:19Speaker 1: I could see that where you might have enjoyed a
- 32:21Speaker 1: TV Land marathon more so than what was there for
- 32:27Speaker 1: the second half of the game. Certainly, I.
- 32:31Speaker 3: Don't know.
- 32:32Speaker 1: In the second half of the game, it kind of
- 32:33Speaker 1: lured me like a train wreck or whatever, you know,
- 32:35Speaker 1: or a big car crash or something.
- 32:37Speaker 3: You're just you're just watching, you're watching.
- 32:39Speaker 1: And I began to think when it got late third quarter,
- 32:46Speaker 1: I started to think, are we going to see the
- 32:50Speaker 1: first shut out in Super Bowl history? There's never been
- 32:54Speaker 1: a shutout in a Super Bowl. The closest it has
- 32:58Speaker 1: come twice is three points Dallas Miami and super Bowl six,
- 33:04Speaker 1: but that was a ten to three game at the half.
- 33:07Speaker 1: The Dolphins scored I think in the second quarter and
- 33:10Speaker 1: didn't score again. The other was that desultory Rams Patriots
- 33:15Speaker 1: thirteen to three to bacle when Jared Goff was proving
- 33:19Speaker 1: he had no future as the Rams quarterback and the
- 33:24Speaker 1: Rams lost that game thirteen to three.
- 33:29Speaker 3: I went back and I looked over some of the
- 33:30Speaker 3: Super Bowl history. There was a.
- 33:32Speaker 1: String of games six times in seven years, I think,
- 33:37Speaker 1: where the losing team scored in single digits. No shutouts,
- 33:42Speaker 1: but single digits. You go all the way back to
- 33:45Speaker 1: Super Bowl three. The colt scored seven points against the Jets.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Jets won sixteen to seven. Super Bowl four. The Vikings
- 33:53Speaker 1: scored seven points against the Chiefs. Chiefs won twenty three
- 33:56Speaker 1: to seven Super Bowl five. The Cowboys scored double digits,
- 34:01Speaker 1: but only thirteen points in that sixteen thirteen loss to
- 34:04Speaker 1: the Colts. Super Bowl six, the Cowboys beat the Dolphins
- 34:07Speaker 1: I mentioned twenty four to three. Super Bowl seven, the
- 34:10Speaker 1: Dolphins complete the perfect season by beating Washington fourteen to seven.
- 34:14Speaker 1: They go seventeen to them Super Bowl eight. The Dolphins
- 34:19Speaker 1: made it back to back. I think they were an
- 34:21Speaker 1: even better team, even though they lost two games during
- 34:23Speaker 1: the regular season. They beat the Vikings twenty four to
- 34:26Speaker 1: seven completely dominated game. Wasn't even nearly that close. That
- 34:28Speaker 1: was at Rice Stadium they played that Super Bowl and
- 34:31Speaker 1: Super Bowl nine. The Steelers won their first Super Bowl.
- 34:35Speaker 1: They beat the Vikings sixteen to six six times in
- 34:37Speaker 1: seven years the losing team had single digit points. Now,
- 34:44Speaker 1: the Chiefs didn't wind up single digit points because they
- 34:47Speaker 1: scored sixteen to fourth quarter points in garbage time, as
- 34:49Speaker 1: we know. But they were down big. It was, you know,
- 34:56Speaker 1: thirty four to nothing. And that's the largest deficit a
- 35:00Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes quarterback team has faced since he was there.
- 35:05Speaker 1: You know, they they brought up Fox brought up the
- 35:08Speaker 1: deal about twenty four to nothing largest deficit.
- 35:13Speaker 5: Lo whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa whoa.
- 35:15Speaker 1: Weren't the Texans up twenty four nothing on the Chiefs
- 35:19Speaker 1: in an AFC championship game or AFC playoff game?
- 35:23Speaker 3: It was the divisional game. The divisional game.
- 35:24Speaker 1: I know, at one point they showed it during the broadcast. Okay,
- 35:28Speaker 1: I saw a thing. That's the largest deficit at twenty
- 35:30Speaker 1: four to nothing. I said, wait, wait, tied for largest deficit.
- 35:34Speaker 1: Either that or maybe it wasn't Super Bowl history, because
- 35:37Speaker 1: the Broncos trailed Seattle by thirty oh yeah six, yeah yeah, yeah,
- 35:43Speaker 1: they got badly, they lost by They ended up losing
- 35:47Speaker 1: by thirty five.
- 35:48Speaker 3: They lost forty three to eight.
- 35:50Speaker 6: But the twenty nineteen divisional round, Mahomes, Yeah, and the
- 35:53Speaker 6: Chiefs trailed by twenty four to ninety four. Yeah nothing, okay,
- 35:56Speaker 6: obviously came back and won that game.
- 35:58Speaker 1: Yep.
- 36:00Speaker 3: Nothing.
- 36:00Speaker 1: Was certainly the largest deathsit Mahomes team had faced in
- 36:04Speaker 1: a game of any kind.
- 36:06Speaker 3: And the you know, and so they came back.
- 36:13Speaker 1: And they scored six and the third and sixteen and
- 36:15Speaker 1: the fourth so wound up being forty to twenty two.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Is the final score in Super Bowl fifty nine. So
- 36:21Speaker 1: we'll see how it is going forward. We'll have more
- 36:23Speaker 1: on that coming up. But we're also going to hear
- 36:27Speaker 1: from Longhorn men's basketball coach Rodney Terry as his team
- 36:30Speaker 1: prepares to take on number two Alabama tomorrow night at
- 36:33Speaker 1: Moody Center. That's next here on thirteen under the Zone.
- 36:39Speaker 7: We're back. It's the Craig Way Show with Hall of
- 36:42Speaker 7: Fame broadcaster and voice of the Texas Longhards Craig Way.
- 36:57Speaker 1: Coming up in the next segment, we'll we hear from
- 36:59Speaker 1: Addison Booker at twenty points and eleven rebounds.
- 37:01Speaker 3: And that went over South Carolina yesterday.
- 37:03Speaker 1: More on the Super Bowl around the corner as well,
- 37:05Speaker 1: but wanted to start the prep for Texas Alabama tomorrow
- 37:10Speaker 1: night at Moody Center. And in his media availability, Rodney
- 37:15Speaker 1: Terry was asked about when he was coaching at Presdent
- 37:18Speaker 1: of State in twenty sixteen and they were really struggling,
- 37:20Speaker 1: all of a sudden, they flipped the script and turned
- 37:22Speaker 1: around and made the NCAA Tournament. And some folks may
- 37:24Speaker 1: be wondering about that given the fact that.
- 37:29Speaker 3: Texas is having.
- 37:30Speaker 1: Some struggles right now, having dropped back to back games,
- 37:33Speaker 1: and even though they're still listed as being in the
- 37:34Speaker 1: NCAA Tournament field at the moment, can they flip the
- 37:38Speaker 1: script and are there any similarities between this team then
- 37:40Speaker 1: and what changed back in twenty sixteen?
- 37:43Speaker 8: That team actually finished second in the league that year
- 37:45Speaker 8: behind San Diego State, and we played in the championship
- 37:48Speaker 8: game in the Medlonwest Conference Tournament to win.
- 37:53Speaker 5: But our last five seven.
- 37:55Speaker 8: Games of the season, we played terrific to rific defense.
- 38:01Speaker 8: We got a lot of offense off our defense, and
- 38:05Speaker 8: they got star players really stepped up and.
- 38:08Speaker 5: Got things done at a high level.
- 38:09Speaker 8: I thought we had a six man off the bench
- 38:12Speaker 8: that that was really good for us. Junior Lewis played
- 38:15Speaker 8: like a starter and you know, really played really well
- 38:19Speaker 8: forced down the stretch. But I would attribute that a
- 38:22Speaker 8: lot to our defense and rebound and I think the
- 38:26Speaker 8: same thing that this team right here down the stretch,
- 38:30Speaker 8: we continue to buy into our heart. We have to
- 38:33Speaker 8: play defensively and make competitive plays down the stretch. We
- 38:38Speaker 8: shown at times in conference play that we could rebound
- 38:42Speaker 8: the basketball in this league at a very high clip.
- 38:45Speaker 8: But you've got to do it every night. You know,
- 38:47Speaker 8: You've got to rebound and defend at a very high level.
- 38:51Speaker 8: I know it's something that we placed an emphasis on
- 38:53Speaker 8: over the last we could, so really just trying to
- 38:56Speaker 8: get back to being a solid, competitive defensive team with
- 39:01Speaker 8: the high was his own finishing possessions with physical rebounds.
- 39:06Speaker 1: So there was the similarities and differences.
- 39:10Speaker 3: It's interesting. Brought up Julian Louise.
- 39:12Speaker 1: Remember Julian was a Longhorn and then transferred out to
- 39:17Speaker 1: Fresno and ended up helping Rodney and the Longhorns advance
- 39:22Speaker 1: to the NCAA tournament. All right, Next up, Artie was
- 39:28Speaker 1: asked about Kenda Weaver. Now, Kendall's had that hip flexer thing,
- 39:32Speaker 1: and since he has been out, he's been listed as indefinite. Now,
- 39:37Speaker 1: those of us who are around the team and watching
- 39:39Speaker 1: him both at home and road seeing him work through
- 39:42Speaker 1: some things.
- 39:42Speaker 3: But the season is going along and.
- 39:45Speaker 1: Somebody was asked if there's a possibility that kend Of
- 39:47Speaker 1: Weaver could actually even possibly medically red shirt and so
- 39:52Speaker 1: that is still to be determined at this point. Okay,
- 39:56Speaker 1: the Longhorns of course got beat on the boards on
- 40:02Speaker 1: Saturday and uh and and they're gonna have to turn
- 40:06Speaker 1: that around as well. So Texas is uh trying to
- 40:15Speaker 1: uh get better in terms of its rebounding as well,
- 40:18Speaker 1: and can they be a better rebounding team?
- 40:22Speaker 3: That was the question was asked of our team.
- 40:23Speaker 8: Well, I think you know, you talk about two different
- 40:26Speaker 8: sides of the ball offensively, I think we had definitely
- 40:28Speaker 8: improved over the course of conference play. Would be a
- 40:31Speaker 8: team that could crash and get second chance opportunities.
- 40:34Speaker 5: We were getting.
- 40:35Speaker 8: We had, you know, consecutive get well the you know,
- 40:38Speaker 8: you talk about two different sides of the ball. Offensively,
- 40:41Speaker 8: I think we had definitely improved over the course of
- 40:44Speaker 8: conference play. Would be a team that could crash and
- 40:46Speaker 8: get second chance opportunities.
- 40:48Speaker 5: We were getting. We had, you know, consecutive games, you
- 40:51Speaker 5: know we had to stretch.
- 40:51Speaker 8: We had like four or five straight games we had
- 40:53Speaker 8: ten more offensive rebounds. So we we've shown we could
- 40:57Speaker 8: do it on the offensive side of it. We've shown
- 40:59Speaker 8: at times we can do it on the defensive side
- 41:02Speaker 8: of it, where we've limited uh second chance opportunities.
- 41:06Speaker 5: I think from time to time.
- 41:07Speaker 8: As much as we want to be physical in between games,
- 41:10Speaker 8: it's really hard for us to be as physical as
- 41:12Speaker 8: we want to be sometimes in practices because of the
- 41:16Speaker 8: availability of our guys and kind of just where we
- 41:19Speaker 8: are off from a physical standpoint this time of year.
- 41:22Speaker 5: You can't go in and just beat you guys up.
- 41:24Speaker 8: You need you need to have them in gage, but
- 41:26Speaker 8: you also need to have competitive practices as well. You know,
- 41:30Speaker 8: even with a quick turnaround and and being nicked up
- 41:34Speaker 8: a little bit. You know, we went pretty physical today
- 41:37Speaker 8: because we had to. We had to get the mindset
- 41:39Speaker 8: again to doing it to what we're actually doing it
- 41:42Speaker 8: in practice, bone on bone, and the same thing with deepense.
- 41:46Speaker 8: You got to be there to practice that way if
- 41:49Speaker 8: you want to play that way in terms of being
- 41:51Speaker 8: super competitive. Uh, and that's where your ones goes against
- 41:54Speaker 8: your twos as opposed to just going to getst your
- 41:56Speaker 8: scout team all the time.
- 41:58Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a big part of as well. And I
- 42:00Speaker 1: thought it was significant. But he talked about having a
- 42:03Speaker 1: healthy enough roster. I pointed out about Kenda Weaver being out.
- 42:07Speaker 1: Remember Tramont Mark did not play on Saturday due to
- 42:10Speaker 1: a shoulder injury. So what is the latest on Trumont Mark.
- 42:15Speaker 8: Yeah, Tremont had a really good practice today. We expect
- 42:18Speaker 8: him to play tomorrow and be a guy that's ready
- 42:21Speaker 8: to go.
- 42:22Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 42:22Speaker 3: Yeah, that's good to hear. All right, So now.
- 42:26Speaker 1: The focus in practice is getting ready for this Alabama
- 42:31Speaker 1: team that we pointed out comes in at number two.
- 42:33Speaker 1: They're twenty and three, nine and one in SEC play
- 42:40Speaker 1: and you know, they've got several big weapons.
- 42:44Speaker 3: They're physical, they could shoot the ball.
- 42:45Speaker 1: They have a really dynamic offense as well. These are
- 42:50Speaker 1: you know, all weapons they've had and racing them out
- 42:52Speaker 1: to this league. So you know, what are the Longhorns
- 42:57Speaker 1: focusing on in practice ahead of facing this very fast
- 43:02Speaker 1: and physical Alabama team.
- 43:03Speaker 8: I tell you, you know, in this league, every night
- 43:06Speaker 8: it's a physical battle coming to you, you know, and
- 43:09Speaker 8: you know you have to be willing to bring the
- 43:11Speaker 8: contact to your opponent because the opponent's gonna bring the
- 43:13Speaker 8: contact to you. In terms of trying to keep guys
- 43:17Speaker 8: off the glass. Another team with a you know, a
- 43:20Speaker 8: lot of height, a lot of size.
- 43:22Speaker 5: They do a great job crashing.
- 43:23Speaker 8: But they're probably the fastest team we played to this
- 43:25Speaker 8: point right now. So transition defense is gonna be really
- 43:28Speaker 8: big for us. We'll have to try to get back
- 43:30Speaker 8: get a defense set. They really score early early in
- 43:34Speaker 8: the possession that they're getting shot up pretty quick, you know,
- 43:37Speaker 8: whether it's for a layup or for scoring opportunity for three.
- 43:42Speaker 5: They're they're about.
- 43:43Speaker 8: Four the fastest team we played in that regard, So
- 43:45Speaker 8: we got to sprint back under your desk. It's gonna
- 43:48Speaker 8: be really important for us our defense set. Uh, and
- 43:51Speaker 8: it's gonna be you know, first down, first down possession.
- 43:55Speaker 8: You know you use first down in football, but you're
- 43:58Speaker 8: gonna have to get down and you're gonna have to
- 43:59Speaker 8: defend that first that first action of that first shot
- 44:03Speaker 8: immediately off the bat, and then you're gonna have to
- 44:05Speaker 8: try to keep them off the boards from a second opportunity,
- 44:08Speaker 8: a third opportunity's gonna be critical, boys, And then offensively,
- 44:12Speaker 8: what to come down to try to execute all is
- 44:14Speaker 8: and uh and challenge.
- 44:16Speaker 5: Him to go out us as well.
- 44:18Speaker 1: One more from Rodney this hour, and we'll hear some
- 44:20Speaker 1: more from Rtie coming up next hour. This is a
- 44:23Speaker 1: question that came up at Pluckers and I can tell
- 44:26Speaker 1: you this, this question comes up every single time for
- 44:34Speaker 1: the head coach of a program that hasn't played at
- 44:41Speaker 1: the championship level that other programs on campus have. Sark
- 44:46Speaker 1: was asked about it when he was building things up
- 44:48Speaker 1: about you know, uh, how does he how does he
- 44:51Speaker 1: raise the bar on that Vic Shavers asked about when
- 44:54Speaker 1: he first came in to take over the Texas women's
- 44:56Speaker 1: program as well. And now with both of those program's
- 45:00Speaker 1: really really good, and softball number one, and then golf
- 45:03Speaker 1: and tennis and swimming and track and field as University
- 45:06Speaker 1: of Texas volleyball invariably is really really good every year.
- 45:10Speaker 1: Rodney was asked if the success of the other programs
- 45:14Speaker 1: on the forty acres put pressure on the basketball team
- 45:18Speaker 1: to raise the bar.
- 45:19Speaker 8: Think, again, anytime you have success on this campus, you know,
- 45:23Speaker 8: we have elite coaches, We have at least todent athletes
- 45:26Speaker 8: on this campus, and I think there's now a program
- 45:28Speaker 8: on this campus is that that doesn't compete for a
- 45:31Speaker 8: national championships. So you know, that's the thing and a
- 45:34Speaker 8: unique opportunity about being at the University of Texas. Everyone
- 45:38Speaker 8: is pretty elite at what they do and how they
- 45:41Speaker 8: do it. So you're surrounded. You're surrounded by greatness every
- 45:44Speaker 8: day on this campus. And again, if that doesn't raise
- 45:48Speaker 8: your level in terms of you trying to be the
- 45:50Speaker 8: best that you could be in your craft, I don't
- 45:53Speaker 8: really know what else.
- 45:54Speaker 5: Because you're around highly.
- 45:55Speaker 8: Competitive individuals every day, that that that all the nation's
- 46:00Speaker 8: best to be the best. And uh, I think, uh,
- 46:05Speaker 8: obviously we support every program and we're we're excited when
- 46:08Speaker 8: when other programs on this campus went at a very
- 46:10Speaker 8: high level. We expect to try to win at that
- 46:13Speaker 8: same level as well. You know, we're competing in the
- 46:16Speaker 8: best league in the country. We're excited about it. Every
- 46:19Speaker 8: night we have a great opportunity. Uh, we've got an
- 46:22Speaker 8: incredible challenge coming in here tomorrow night against you know,
- 46:28Speaker 8: maybe the number one team in the in the country.
- 46:29Speaker 8: They should be number one, uh when they when when
- 46:32Speaker 8: we when we tip it up tomorrow night, and maybe
- 46:35Speaker 8: you know, we'll see we're at all kinds of stacks
- 46:36Speaker 8: and I don't know what that's gonna stack up, uh
- 46:39Speaker 8: over over the next hour or two, I don't know.
- 46:42Speaker 8: But but they're clearly one of the best teams we
- 46:44Speaker 8: played all year. So UH, we're excited about the challenge
- 46:47Speaker 8: and the opportunity, uh to play a team that uh
- 46:51Speaker 8: uh has they had as good a season as they
- 46:53Speaker 8: had to this point right now and again every night
- 46:56Speaker 8: and now in our lea, you have to bring your
- 46:59Speaker 8: a game.
- 47:00Speaker 5: You have to bring your best game.
- 47:02Speaker 8: There's not one team in his league and you could
- 47:04Speaker 8: come in and now I have to play at a
- 47:05Speaker 8: very high level.
- 47:07Speaker 1: Yeah. It's a great answer, and it's an answer that
- 47:09Speaker 1: I've heard the other coaches say as well, the success
- 47:12Speaker 1: of the other programs on campus should not intimidate or
- 47:19Speaker 1: negatively effect the program that's trying to build to get
- 47:21Speaker 1: to that level. It should draw it strength from those programs.
- 47:25Speaker 1: I've heard Rodney say that, or Sark saying when he
- 47:27Speaker 1: was trying to build getting football built up, Vic Schaeffer
- 47:30Speaker 1: with women's basketball, Jim Schloasnegols was doing that, working on
- 47:35Speaker 1: that for long worn baseball. So same thing with men's basketball.
- 47:39Speaker 1: And Rodney tell you to tell you they don't shy
- 47:41Speaker 1: away from that at all. They think that that's a
- 47:42Speaker 1: great thing and they try to build off of that. Well,
- 47:45Speaker 1: they get a chance to make statement tomorrow night. It
- 47:46Speaker 1: is the number two team in the country. Auburn remained
- 47:49Speaker 1: number one in the poll that came out after this
- 47:52Speaker 1: morning's mediism there with Rodney Terry, Alabama is number two,
- 47:55Speaker 1: but they got the number two team in the country
- 47:57Speaker 1: coming into borrow night.
- 47:58Speaker 3: It's an eight o'clock tip. You can hear it here
- 48:01Speaker 3: on thirteen.
- 48:01Speaker 1: Under the Zone as well as on ninety eight point
- 48:03Speaker 1: one Fmkvett coming away tonight as Texas will Tomorrow.
- 48:08Speaker 3: Night is Texas will take on Alabama.
- 48:10Speaker 8: All right.
- 48:10Speaker 1: Coming up next, we're need you from Madison Booker and
- 48:12Speaker 1: a review of the Texas women's huge win over South Carolina.
- 48:15Speaker 1: When we continue on thirteen under the Zone.
- 48:21Speaker 5: Back to the Craig Way Show.
- 48:23Speaker 7: Connect with Craig through the text line by text Team
- 48:25Speaker 7: Texas to eight one five three zero, followed by your message.
- 48:29Speaker 7: Standard message and data rates may apply.
- 48:36Speaker 1: Rolling through a Monday afternoon. I are on thirteen hundred
- 48:41Speaker 1: the Zone and we'll hear more from Rodney Terry coming
- 48:45Speaker 1: up next hour. Also some updated bracketology on the men's side,
- 48:49Speaker 1: we'll have that as well. On the women's side, the
- 48:53Speaker 1: latest projections at Texas has a number one seed and
- 48:56Speaker 1: that was before the South Carolina game. So when it's
- 48:59Speaker 1: updated again this week, it'll be interesting to see if Texas,
- 49:03Speaker 1: you know, one would imagine would still be on the
- 49:05Speaker 1: rise with what they did with that win over South
- 49:08Speaker 1: Carolina yesterday.
- 49:11Speaker 3: Longhorn's winning that rematch.
- 49:12Speaker 1: Remember they lost last month in Colombia by seventeen points
- 49:19Speaker 1: and that game was out of reach by the end
- 49:23Speaker 1: of the first quarter. They just they didn't shoot the
- 49:26Speaker 1: ball well, shot twenty eight percent. Just couldn't match up
- 49:30Speaker 1: in that game. But yesterday. They certainly did. They were
- 49:33Speaker 1: very aggressive, took the fight to them. They never trailed
- 49:37Speaker 1: in the game. South Carolina tied it on six different occasions,
- 49:41Speaker 1: and they stayed within five points for the last fifteen
- 49:43Speaker 1: minutes of game time, but they couldn't get over the hump.
- 49:49Speaker 1: Texas was able to get enough stops and also hit
- 49:56Speaker 1: some key baskets. Kylo Oldacre really big now the stretch.
- 50:00Speaker 1: Thirteen point six rebounds for Kyla matched up with the
- 50:03Speaker 1: eleven points and six boards or seven boards from Taylor Jones.
- 50:11Speaker 3: That was big.
- 50:12Speaker 1: The combination of the bigs inside had a big effect
- 50:16Speaker 1: on the game. Cocks inside, and that's where the Longhorns
- 50:18Speaker 1: kind of showed the blueprint for how you have to
- 50:21Speaker 1: stay with and have a shot to beat a team
- 50:22Speaker 1: like South Carolina. But you have to have a singular
- 50:24Speaker 1: player who could have those big singular moments, and Madison
- 50:27Speaker 1: Booker certainly had that. Madison had the first game in Columbia,
- 50:34Speaker 1: went zero for nine to start the ball game and
- 50:37Speaker 1: wound up three for nineteen for the day. Really struggle.
- 50:41Speaker 1: It just didn't work in the first game. Some of
- 50:43Speaker 1: it South Carolina's defense and some of there were just
- 50:45Speaker 1: some flat out open looks that didn't fall. And so
- 50:49Speaker 1: that was part and parcel of our postgame conversation with Booker,
- 50:52Speaker 1: who had twenty points eleven rebounds, had a gigantic and
- 50:55Speaker 1: one down the stretch of the game yesterday, but every
- 50:58Speaker 1: time the Longhorn seemed to need a big basket either
- 51:02Speaker 1: Madison Booker Kyla Oldacre was able to provide it there
- 51:05Speaker 1: in the fourth quarter.
- 51:06Speaker 3: So after the game we got a chance to visit.
- 51:08Speaker 1: With the long Orange All American and talk about all
- 51:10Speaker 1: this Madison Booker, Madison Booker is gonna come over here
- 51:13Speaker 1: and join us now. And Maddy with the twenty points
- 51:16Speaker 1: to go with eleven rebounds to double double. I asked
- 51:20Speaker 1: coach about this again at the start, and you know,
- 51:24Speaker 1: the tough game in Columbia on back, tough game for
- 51:27Speaker 1: the team, tough game for you individually. How long did
- 51:29Speaker 1: it take you to just shelve that and compartmentalize it.
- 51:34Speaker 2: I mean I.
- 51:34Speaker 9: Would lie and said I forgot about the game, but
- 51:37Speaker 9: I think after you know, that game, just once I
- 51:41Speaker 9: got on the bus flight back home to Austin, I've
- 51:44Speaker 9: been thinking about this rematch since then, and just think
- 51:47Speaker 9: about how you know what I could have changed differently
- 51:49Speaker 9: during that game. And you know sometimes you know, I
- 51:52Speaker 9: sit back and think that dang, like I took so
- 51:54Speaker 9: many shots, like, but those are my shots, and and
- 51:58Speaker 9: you know I had to you know, just you know
- 51:59Speaker 9: talk just like talking about coaches and say, you know
- 52:02Speaker 9: me personally, I think like those are my shots, and
- 52:04Speaker 9: I keep taking my shots and they agree. I mean
- 52:06Speaker 9: I worked for my shots. I you know, like I
- 52:08Speaker 9: worked hard. But you know I took the same shots
- 52:10Speaker 9: today and you know, hey seven between two. But you
- 52:13Speaker 9: know the thing I think the difference was I did
- 52:15Speaker 9: more defense, I got rebound, I got steels. Just you know,
- 52:20Speaker 9: a couple of my team I went today, which was
- 52:22Speaker 9: really the difference maker from today and then South Carolina
- 52:26Speaker 9: last time.
- 52:26Speaker 1: I was gonna ask you what the difference was for
- 52:28Speaker 1: the team. It looked like team defense, you guys.
- 52:31Speaker 9: Yes, he's been just he's been harping on that since
- 52:35Speaker 9: the the Obama game. Actually, uh, they have a great
- 52:38Speaker 9: point guards the Green over there, and you know our
- 52:41Speaker 9: game plan for her for them was you know, taking
- 52:44Speaker 9: away her space, team defense because you know, she's a
- 52:45Speaker 9: very hard player to stop. So I think, you know,
- 52:47Speaker 9: coming into this game, he you know, he just brought
- 52:49Speaker 9: up the example of the Bama game and how we
- 52:52Speaker 9: played great team defense, and I think, you know we
- 52:54Speaker 9: locked in, like on scout, we prepare it well. I
- 52:57Speaker 9: think we were, you know, after the venue win, we
- 52:59Speaker 9: were so hard to play.
- 53:00Speaker 8: I'll put it again.
- 53:01Speaker 9: I think, you know, those two days, I think we
- 53:02Speaker 9: just came in with our.
- 53:03Speaker 1: Hair on fire.
- 53:04Speaker 3: All right, Hey, I enjoyed this one.
- 53:05Speaker 1: I appreciate you taking the time, appreciate thank you.
- 53:07Speaker 2: All right.
- 53:09Speaker 1: She definitely went into that game, might say with her
- 53:13Speaker 1: hair on fire as well, But some of the best
- 53:16Speaker 1: players in college basketball find a way to get their
- 53:20Speaker 1: teammates involved in that. That's what she does, and that's
- 53:22Speaker 1: what ry Harmon does as well. It's part of what
- 53:25Speaker 1: makes this team as good, as solid, as dangerous as
- 53:28Speaker 1: they are. As I mentioned, the racketology had Texas as
- 53:39Speaker 1: a one seed. That was even before the game, had
- 53:43Speaker 1: them in Spokane, opening at home for the first two rounds,
- 53:47Speaker 1: playing against Eastern Illinois in automatic qualifier, and then the
- 53:53Speaker 1: face the winner of an eight nine matchup between Creighton
- 53:55Speaker 1: and Illinois. If they went on to Spokane, it would
- 53:58Speaker 1: have teams like usc Is a two Duke is a three,
- 54:03Speaker 1: Kentucky is a four, Maryland is a five. So all
- 54:06Speaker 1: of those we're on there now having one. Depending on
- 54:11Speaker 1: the type of week they have, they might be able
- 54:13Speaker 1: to play their way off of Spokane and into Birmingham,
- 54:19Speaker 1: depending because right now the bracketology has South Carolina and
- 54:23Speaker 1: in Birmingham, and Notre Dame in Birmingham, and the has
- 54:25Speaker 1: Texas and UCLA in Spokane. So we'll see how it
- 54:31Speaker 1: goes from there. You heard Dick Schaeffer I guess a
- 54:34Speaker 1: little over a week ago saying he bet his bottom
- 54:37Speaker 1: dollars that he would not get an opportunity to play
- 54:40Speaker 1: in Birmingham. He thinks they're going to send them west
- 54:42Speaker 1: like they've done several times in the past. But who knows,
- 54:44Speaker 1: maybe they can play their way into that going forward.
- 54:47Speaker 3: We'll see.
- 54:48Speaker 1: All right, we have more coming up as we continue
- 54:50Speaker 1: here on this Monday afternoon on AM thirteen.
- 54:52Speaker 3: Under the zone book.
- 54:53Speaker 1: Kerk bounce past so the cutting Holly shows off the glass.
- 54:56Speaker 1: It's going to shee hit the deck hard, but she's
- 54:58Speaker 1: all right.
- 54:59Speaker 3: Shay gets the bucket.
- 55:00Speaker 1: Her first basket texts up by four twenty to sixteen
- 55:03Speaker 1: pop out drives into the pace shop rejected, Holly Jones, Booker,
- 55:08Speaker 1: take your pick. They were all there and the Longhorns
- 55:10Speaker 1: have it. Now two on two lead pass to agree
- 55:13Speaker 1: off the glass. It's good ten point long worn lead
- 55:17Speaker 1: at the midway mark of the second corner of the
- 55:19Speaker 1: fans on their feet. Rory still counting off the dribble
- 55:21Speaker 1: full while a little closer. Now twelve seconds to go
- 55:24Speaker 1: first half harm and still on the dribble top of
- 55:25Speaker 1: the arm. So the right side picks up the dribble
- 55:27Speaker 1: now seven seconds off to win inside a bounce pass.
- 55:30Speaker 1: Pine old Acre in traffic turns for the drop step
- 55:33Speaker 1: the score off the glass does old Acre for the
- 55:36Speaker 1: right side trying to take press it off the dribble,
- 55:38Speaker 1: then lost the dribble picked up by old Acre. Pilot
- 55:41Speaker 1: lead pass Madison Booker, book drive it to the hoop
- 55:45Speaker 1: and she.
- 55:45Speaker 3: Stars man sees back.
- 55:49Speaker 4: What a drive to the hoop by Madison Booker and one.
- 55:54Speaker 1: Fagan to shoot a long free well off the glass
- 55:56Speaker 1: rebound Harmon. That's gonna do it now Goestumber two.
- 56:01Speaker 4: South Carolina's fifty seven game FEC streak is over.
- 56:07Speaker 3: The long Orangs win it.
- 56:09Speaker 1: The final score Texas sixty six South Carolina sixty two.
- 56:16Speaker 1: Big day, big moment yesterday at Moody Center, in front
- 56:21Speaker 1: of a sellout crowd, great environment, great atmosphere there for
- 56:25Speaker 1: the Texas women's win over number two South Carolina sixty
- 56:29Speaker 1: six to sixty two. We begin the final hour of
- 56:31Speaker 1: the program here on this Monday afternoon on thirteen under
- 56:34Speaker 1: the zone Craig Way alongside the producer Cameron Parker. Somebody
- 56:39Speaker 1: had said that they hadn't seen too many men's basketball
- 56:43Speaker 1: environments to match the women's environment yesterday. I think it
- 56:50Speaker 1: is very similar. Once you get to sell a crowd
- 56:51Speaker 1: in there and they're excited about the team, and the
- 56:53Speaker 1: team makes some plays, they're going to be really loud,
- 56:56Speaker 1: They're going to be really noisy. And Vick Shaffer likes
- 57:00Speaker 1: to say that he knows his audience, his quords, not
- 57:04Speaker 1: mine his words. What does he say, old hairs, blue hairs,
- 57:09Speaker 1: and gray hairs, as he likes to say. But there
- 57:12Speaker 1: was there was a great combination of young and old families, singles, couples, whatever.
- 57:24Speaker 1: There were girl scouts in the arena, there were other organizations.
- 57:31Speaker 1: It was it was fun. It was it was a
- 57:33Speaker 1: fun game and and quite an environment and a big
- 57:38Speaker 1: win for the Texas Longhorns as they won sixty six
- 57:41Speaker 1: to sixty two over South Carolina. What that win does
- 57:43Speaker 1: is it moves Texas into a tie for first place
- 57:46Speaker 1: on top of the SEC standings. The Longhorns have five
- 57:50Speaker 1: games remaining. They're ten and one. They're tied with South Carolina.
- 57:53Speaker 1: They're tied with LSU, which won yesterday or Tennessee, and
- 57:57Speaker 1: they're tied in the lost column with Kentucky. If Kentucky
- 58:00Speaker 1: wins tonight over Ole Miss, then it's a four way
- 58:05Speaker 1: tie and Texas plays in Lexington at Kentucky, who is
- 58:10Speaker 1: up to number eight in the AP Pole. Texas is
- 58:13Speaker 1: up to number three after the win yesterday, just ahead
- 58:16Speaker 1: of South Carolina, who is number four. Notre Dame, who
- 58:19Speaker 1: owns an overtime win over Texas and South Bend back
- 58:22Speaker 1: in December, is number two.
- 58:23Speaker 3: At unbeaten UCLA is number one.
- 58:26Speaker 1: So they play at number eight Kentucky on Thursday and
- 58:33Speaker 1: then come home to play LSU on Sunday afternoon. And
- 58:42Speaker 1: the Tigers obviously are one of the best teams in
- 58:47Speaker 1: the country. They're number five in the country. They're twenty
- 58:49Speaker 1: five and one. Their only loss is to South Carolina.
- 58:52Speaker 1: It was the only meeting between those two, so they
- 58:55Speaker 1: played Texas Sunday afternoon at two o'clock. So two huge
- 59:00Speaker 1: games for the Texas women coming off that big game,
- 59:04Speaker 1: and a win for the Longhorns in either of those
- 59:08Speaker 1: two games I think puts them in a better position
- 59:10Speaker 1: to wind up being a number one seed. In the
- 59:13Speaker 1: most recent racketology projections, they're listed as a one seed
- 59:18Speaker 1: and that was before the game yesterday with South Carolina,
- 59:21Speaker 1: so a lot to be excited about, especially with the
- 59:24Speaker 1: way this team responded. They never trailed in the game.
- 59:27Speaker 1: South Carolina was even with them six times, but the
- 59:30Speaker 1: game Cotch never led and after the game, we visited
- 59:33Speaker 1: with head coach Vick Shaffer to talk about the importance
- 59:35Speaker 1: of this win and how well his team played in
- 59:38Speaker 1: beating one of the best, if not the best team
- 59:40Speaker 1: in the country. Nick, you mentioned to me before the
- 59:43Speaker 1: game what confidence you had in this team to be
- 59:47Speaker 1: able to flip.
- 59:48Speaker 3: The script before?
- 59:50Speaker 1: What gave you the confidence of what you've seen over
- 59:52Speaker 1: the past month with this group.
- 59:53Speaker 2: Well, a person, I'll have to tell you.
- 59:55Speaker 10: When we walked off the floor in Columbia, Lena Lovado
- 59:58Speaker 10: looked at me and said, we will be them in
- 1:00:00Speaker 10: a fund.
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: That's a god's honest truths. You claimed it.
- 1:00:04Speaker 10: And you know, just the evolution of this team. I
- 1:00:07Speaker 10: think at times they're really tough and it took a great,
- 1:00:10Speaker 10: gritty effort today to get that done against what I
- 1:00:14Speaker 10: think is the number one team in the country.
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: And that's no slight to UCLA, but they're.
- 1:00:19Speaker 10: So dang good and we had to have an incredible
- 1:00:23Speaker 10: effort today by our players too, you know, just to
- 1:00:28Speaker 10: to win. I mean, they're so good, they're so talented,
- 1:00:32Speaker 10: and so again I'm really proud of them. It's you know,
- 1:00:37Speaker 10: that's hard to do. And just the execution on the
- 1:00:40Speaker 10: half court I thought was really good. I thought when
- 1:00:43Speaker 10: we called the time out, we kind of got ourselves
- 1:00:45Speaker 10: together a little bit and you know, we realized they
- 1:00:48Speaker 10: were going to come out.
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: They weren't gonna sit on their hands over there. But
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: I thought they got a regroup at that point.
- 1:00:54Speaker 10: I think they still tied it, but we managed to
- 1:00:57Speaker 10: answer offense. Well, you got to score points against him.
- 1:01:00Speaker 10: You had to find ways to score and it's really hard.
- 1:01:03Speaker 10: Their defense is so good, so anyway I can't.
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: That's a great win. I'm so proud of our kids.
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: It's just hard to do, y'all.
- 1:01:15Speaker 11: You have no idea, People have no idea what it
- 1:01:18Speaker 11: takes to compete at that level today against that team,
- 1:01:22Speaker 11: and I just couldn't be proud of our kids.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: You never lost the lead. They tied it six times,
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: but you never gave up the lead. Your team had
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: a response every time. What did you see in them
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: that they just refused to fall behind in this game?
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: I think our execution offensively was really good, you know.
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: I think when we had to have a bucket, Booker.
- 1:01:43Speaker 10: Made a big shot or we got the ball inside.
- 1:01:45Speaker 10: You know, our bigs were really efficient today and effective.
- 1:01:49Speaker 10: We didn't quite go down there as much as I'd
- 1:01:50Speaker 10: like to, but they were still very efficient today and
- 1:01:54Speaker 10: again sixty four sixty two. I told them I wouldn't
- 1:01:58Speaker 10: rather I'd rotten that rather not have it any other way.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: We got to have a stop, and.
- 1:02:04Speaker 5: We got it.
- 1:02:04Speaker 10: We got the stop, got the rebound, and then we
- 1:02:06Speaker 10: executed down the strap stretch and Rory makes two big
- 1:02:10Speaker 10: free throws.
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: You also mentioned to me before the game you said
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: you weren't worried about Madison with the od for nine started.
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: Whatever you said she's fine. Yeah, she clearly was today.
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: Yeah, no question.
- 1:02:20Speaker 10: She's the All American that obviously we lean on a lot,
- 1:02:24Speaker 10: and uh, you know, she knows I'm coming to her
- 1:02:27Speaker 10: come hell or high water, and uh you know, she
- 1:02:30Speaker 10: played extremely well today. And thought our bench played well.
- 1:02:33Speaker 10: You know, I just thought everybody really chipped in. But
- 1:02:37Speaker 10: it's a great team win. I know you don't feel
- 1:02:39Speaker 10: one hundred percent physical. That doesn't make you feel little
- 1:02:42Speaker 10: better ever, right, Oh man, I tell you a game
- 1:02:46Speaker 10: like that watching your kids, I mean, as a coach, y'all,
- 1:02:50Speaker 10: this is why you get into it. To watch those
- 1:02:53Speaker 10: kids play today and put forth that effort, the chemistry,
- 1:02:58Speaker 10: the toughness that they took. I mean, this is why
- 1:03:02Speaker 10: I do.
- 1:03:02Speaker 8: What I do.
- 1:03:03Speaker 10: And this is there's so much gratification, satisfaction, appreciation. There's
- 1:03:09Speaker 10: just not enough words for this team and this group,
- 1:03:12Speaker 10: and they just they continue to work, man, And so
- 1:03:17Speaker 10: I'm I'm speechless after all that. I just don't know
- 1:03:20Speaker 10: what else to say about them because there's really not
- 1:03:23Speaker 10: enough superlatives. Like again, it takes an incredible effort today
- 1:03:27Speaker 10: to win that game. Our crowd was spectacular. They were
- 1:03:31Speaker 10: so good and really made a difference, So I'm proud
- 1:03:35Speaker 10: of them. This is what you endis right, crowd against
- 1:03:38Speaker 10: a team, no question, it's it's part of building the program.
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: It's not just players and wins and losses.
- 1:03:43Speaker 10: It's it's your fan base, and uh, this is why
- 1:03:46Speaker 10: we do what we do and it's part of the process.
- 1:03:49Speaker 10: So really appreciate our fans in the atmosphere that they
- 1:03:52Speaker 10: provided because it was really really special for our players,
- 1:03:55Speaker 10: both both sets. I mean, it's just an incredible atmosphere. Hey, congratulations,
- 1:04:00Speaker 10: enjoy this one Vicon, Praise the Lord. Big win there
- 1:04:04Speaker 10: for Texas. You have field one under the weather and
- 1:04:06Speaker 10: still Man's coach that team through all of that. Long
- 1:04:09Speaker 10: Worn's up to number three of the eight peop poles.
- 1:04:11Speaker 10: South Carolina right behind him, number four. LSU, who they
- 1:04:13Speaker 10: play on Sunday, is number five. Kentucky, who they play
- 1:04:16Speaker 10: in Lexington on Thursday night, is number eight.
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: So they also have three wins this season over top
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: ten ranked schools. So that's impressive to see. So all
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: of that very very important for Texas. We've talked quite
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: a bit about the Super Bowl. We'll talk more about
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: that coming up this hour. One thing I hadn't gotten
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: to yet only because it's a part as we know,
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: it's a big part of Super Bowl weekend, and that's
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: the waste management Phoenix Open and in golf, So that's
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: my super Bowl. It's your super Bowl when they yeah, okay,
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: I started saving the cowboalties on it, so it's in
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: other words, it's been your super Bowl your entire life.
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: So tell everybody about Thomas Detrie, right, d tree six
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: hundred sixty five on Saturday, took the lead in the
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: final round and just kind of cruised in from there
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: to get the win.
- 1:05:20Speaker 6: Yeah, fantastic tournament of course, set up was phenomenal over
- 1:05:25Speaker 6: at what do they call it, TBC Scottsdale. You can
- 1:05:27Speaker 6: play it for like eight hundred dollars, so go ahead
- 1:05:29Speaker 6: and do that. But Thomas Dietrie, yeah, the Belgium who
- 1:05:33Speaker 6: played his college golf at Illinois, was college teammates with
- 1:05:37Speaker 6: Thomas Peachers, who was on a lift tour. By the way,
- 1:05:42Speaker 6: Live Golf had a tournament this past weekend, but nobody
- 1:05:45Speaker 6: I think battreet boys are there, so hey that one.
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: I'm sure you probably noticed that the Open Championship now
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: has given a pathway to the leader now in the
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: in the live golf standings to qualify for the Open Champion.
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: Let the top five get in.
- 1:06:02Speaker 6: I want to be able to see some of those
- 1:06:04Speaker 6: good guys play on the tour and in some major championships.
- 1:06:07Speaker 6: But yeah, Thomas T. Tree thirty two years old. If
- 1:06:12Speaker 6: you follow golf, he's kind of a guy that you know,
- 1:06:14Speaker 6: he would be around and then Sunday would come and
- 1:06:16Speaker 6: then oh yeah, another bogie there just you know, birdie putt, Yeah,
- 1:06:20Speaker 6: would go away, completely different story.
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: This week.
- 1:06:23Speaker 6: He had a phenomenal Saturday, phenomenal Sunday. It got down
- 1:06:27Speaker 6: to about a three stroke lead heading to the sixteenth,
- 1:06:30Speaker 6: Dtree misst a makeup a birdie put Daniel Berger, the
- 1:06:34Speaker 6: former Florida State seminal, made a lengthy birdie putt. You
- 1:06:37Speaker 6: know there's still you know, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, but hey,
- 1:06:39Speaker 6: three shot leading, that can happen. And then Peters or sorry,
- 1:06:43Speaker 6: Thomas Detree at the shot of the tournament on the sixteenth,
- 1:06:46Speaker 6: he just saw Daniel Berger sail it long and Ifflib
- 1:06:49Speaker 6: had a nine iron and stuck it to like two
- 1:06:51Speaker 6: feet made the birdie putt. Made a huge birdie on
- 1:06:54Speaker 6: seventeen out of the bunker and then the exclamation point
- 1:06:57Speaker 6: on the eighteenth to get to twenty three under. It
- 1:07:00Speaker 6: was his tournament to win, kind of like the Philadelphia
- 1:07:01Speaker 6: Equals yesterday. The best golfer one uh this past weekend,
- 1:07:05Speaker 6: So congrats to him. Huge news. Jordan' speed tied for fourth.
- 1:07:10Speaker 3: Yeah, encouraging.
- 1:07:11Speaker 6: Awesome to see Jordan, who didn't drive the ball as
- 1:07:14Speaker 6: great as he usually does yesterday.
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: But what do you have a left handed putt through brush? Yeah,
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: on the on the eleventh, so you know, classic speed way, right,
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: you know. And the best part about you know, when
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: he hits it offline is like either you're gonna either
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: he's gonna have a great lie or the camera's gonna
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: cut to him and he's gonna be somewhere exotic. And
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: in this case, you know, he's under the trees, his
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: golf balls behind a bush. He's talking to the rules
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: official for some help here.
- 1:07:39Speaker 6: Had to go left handed and put the ball out
- 1:07:42Speaker 6: of the brush because he could not grip his golf
- 1:07:45Speaker 6: club with the with the right hand because there was
- 1:07:48Speaker 6: there's shrubbery all over that impeding his golf swing or that.
- 1:07:53Speaker 6: So he puts it out and he's still you know,
- 1:07:58Speaker 6: a ways back out to the right. And the funny
- 1:08:00Speaker 6: thing is he played yesterday with Maverickneeley and Michael Kim
- 1:08:05Speaker 6: and they're off to the side and Michael Kim said
- 1:08:07Speaker 6: the Maverick McNeeley, how funny would it be if speaks
- 1:08:11Speaker 6: makes a par here, because this would be a typical
- 1:08:13Speaker 6: speed par Jordan hit it to like ten feet makes
- 1:08:16Speaker 6: makes the par putt save as par.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: So we're seeing some speed magic back.
- 1:08:20Speaker 6: I mean, he hadn't played golf in like six months,
- 1:08:22Speaker 6: had had a wrist injury that he reinjured last week
- 1:08:25Speaker 6: at Pebble Beach, but came back here look good. Exciting
- 1:08:28Speaker 6: for that. Scotty came out firing the front nine yesterday.
- 1:08:31Speaker 6: I had like a thirty one, thought, you know, oh,
- 1:08:33Speaker 6: is he gonna make a run in the back nine,
- 1:08:35Speaker 6: and then shot a forty. No, he shot a thirty
- 1:08:37Speaker 6: on the front nine and the forty one on the
- 1:08:39Speaker 6: back nine just completely fell apart. So what we'll see,
- 1:08:44Speaker 6: you know, Scotty is coming off surgery as well. So
- 1:08:46Speaker 6: a fantastic week, fantastic golf tournament. And they're back this
- 1:08:49Speaker 6: week at the Genesis. But because of the of course,
- 1:08:51Speaker 6: the wildfires in California instead of playing at Rivier, they're
- 1:08:54Speaker 6: back at Tory Pines to South of course where they
- 1:08:56Speaker 6: just played.
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: Two weeks ago or three weeks ago Reinsurance Open.
- 1:09:01Speaker 3: And no Tiger.
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: No Tiger.
- 1:09:02Speaker 6: He just withdrew the day his mother passed away last week.
- 1:09:06Speaker 6: So of course, you know, very sad story there with
- 1:09:09Speaker 6: Tiger losing his mother. So no Tiger this week, but
- 1:09:12Speaker 6: hopefully we'll see the cat back on the course soon.
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: All right, Up next we'll hear more from Long Woron's
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: men's basketball coach, Trotity Terry when we continue on AM
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: thirteen under the Zone.
- 1:09:29Speaker 7: And we're back to the Craigway Show. Have a message
- 1:09:32Speaker 7: for Craig, share it by using the talkback feature on
- 1:09:35Speaker 7: the Ihearts Radio WAT.
- 1:09:42Speaker 3: Coming off the.
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: Chexas women's win yesterday and ahead of tomorrow night's game
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: for the Long Worn men against number two Alabama, a
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: really really good team of very well ballot lunch team,
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: well you know why listen to me talk about it.
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: We have more sound from Rodney Terry, the Long Warns
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: head coach, and he has his own thoughts on things.
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: So the first thing was asked with regard to Alabama's
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: what really makes that Crimson tight offense so dynamic many
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: points a game.
- 1:10:20Speaker 8: I mean, you know, they put a lot of pressure
- 1:10:23Speaker 8: on you. They can come at you in ways. They've
- 1:10:25Speaker 8: got really good players. They got a really good coach
- 1:10:28Speaker 8: that does a great job, you know in terms of
- 1:10:31Speaker 8: you know that their identity as a team that plays
- 1:10:34Speaker 8: fast offensively, you know, and they've got a lot of lint.
- 1:10:37Speaker 8: They got guys that can shoot the basketball. They've got
- 1:10:40Speaker 8: two starters back from last year.
- 1:10:42Speaker 5: They played in the Final.
- 1:10:42Speaker 8: Four with the third guy that was an impact player
- 1:10:45Speaker 8: for him. So they've got experience, They've got a little
- 1:10:48Speaker 8: bit of everything you need to be highly successful. I
- 1:10:51Speaker 8: think for us, you know, we've got to try to
- 1:10:53Speaker 8: play really hard defensive to get back you know, defensive
- 1:10:56Speaker 8: and sit down and guard. Like I said earlier, first
- 1:10:59Speaker 8: down defense is gonna be really important for us in
- 1:11:02Speaker 8: terms of getting back and handling the initial thrust of
- 1:11:06Speaker 8: them pushing.
- 1:11:07Speaker 5: The ball so fast up the floor.
- 1:11:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: And the guy who can push the ball so fast
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: up the floor is the guy in the back court.
- 1:11:16Speaker 3: He's the spark club.
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: It's Mark Sears, who is also their leading scorer and
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: who averages eighteen points per game, along with three rebounds
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: and five assists, and Art was asked what makes seers
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: so difficult to deal with?
- 1:11:30Speaker 5: Well, I think anytime you.
- 1:11:32Speaker 8: Talk about those you know, those teams, you talk about Arburn,
- 1:11:35Speaker 8: they've got broom to mean the guy that was a
- 1:11:37Speaker 8: part of their team last year and the deep run
- 1:11:39Speaker 8: they had last year.
- 1:11:40Speaker 5: You talk about.
- 1:11:41Speaker 8: Series Final four guy, he's the guy that he's really
- 1:11:44Speaker 8: kind of the head of the snake, you know, he's
- 1:11:47Speaker 8: the guy that makes everything go. He's you know, one
- 1:11:50Speaker 8: of the leading scorers, I think the leading scorer in
- 1:11:52Speaker 8: our league nineteen points the game, almost twenty fourths the game.
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: But he's more than that to their team. He's the
- 1:11:58Speaker 5: guy that's a floor general.
- 1:12:00Speaker 6: Uh.
- 1:12:00Speaker 8: He makes the right passes, makes the right reads, and
- 1:12:04Speaker 8: in big moments in games, he didn't have a problem
- 1:12:07Speaker 8: with taking over and trying to be the closing all right.
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: So that's it.
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: You know that this is a game where the longguage
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: could really use a guy like Kenda Weaver on the floor.
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: And of course Kendall's had that hip flexer issue. It's
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: kept him out for some time and it's indefinite as
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: to his return, So the question is, is there a
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: fault about Kendo Weaver possibly being in a position to
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: medically redshirt.
- 1:12:30Speaker 5: No, I wish that was the case. That was the case,
- 1:12:32Speaker 5: we would have probably already done something like that already.
- 1:12:36Speaker 8: He thought he'd already played too many non conference games
- 1:12:38Speaker 8: early in the season already.
- 1:12:40Speaker 5: You know, we don't talk a lot about.
- 1:12:43Speaker 8: Missing him, but we do miss him a great deal,
- 1:12:45Speaker 8: especially at winning time. He's only played in one conference
- 1:12:49Speaker 8: game two minutes and in the second one.
- 1:12:51Speaker 5: But he's a difference making for you because he makes.
- 1:12:54Speaker 8: A lot of winning plays and does a lot of
- 1:12:56Speaker 8: things that doesn't show up in the in the status sheet,
- 1:12:59Speaker 8: but he gives you a lot of women winning opportunities
- 1:13:02Speaker 8: on office and defense. So he's a he's a big
- 1:13:05Speaker 8: guy out of our lineup. We still don't have a
- 1:13:08Speaker 8: timetable for him to return. Just shit as well.
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's difficult because he's a guy that can
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: help generate offense. And Rodney was asked if he thinks
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: his team is still making smart decisions on offense.
- 1:13:22Speaker 8: Basketball is a support that's full of adversity. No one's
- 1:13:26Speaker 8: gonna play. You can watch the NBA guys play, you know,
- 1:13:29Speaker 8: no one's gonna play a perfect game. You know they're
- 1:13:32Speaker 8: gonna be some bad There're gonna be some mistakes made.
- 1:13:34Speaker 8: Basketball is full of adversity. I said all the time.
- 1:13:38Speaker 5: I think it's the.
- 1:13:38Speaker 8: Teams again that persevere through adversity that win games. No
- 1:13:44Speaker 8: one's gonna play a perfect game, no one's gonna coach
- 1:13:46Speaker 8: a perfect game, no one's gonna officiate a perfect game.
- 1:13:49Speaker 5: But you have to be able to persevere through the
- 1:13:52Speaker 5: adversity that you face in games.
- 1:13:55Speaker 8: You're gonna have some uncomfortable situations where you have to
- 1:13:58Speaker 8: try to be comfortable and work your way through it.
- 1:14:01Speaker 8: There's now one game we played this year in conference
- 1:14:03Speaker 8: play where we have have not been uncomfortable or we
- 1:14:06Speaker 8: haven't had to face adversity. Whether we win or lose,
- 1:14:09Speaker 8: you have to work your way through it. And the
- 1:14:11Speaker 8: team that finds themselves working themselves through the adversity in games,
- 1:14:17Speaker 8: they win games. And so I think again for us,
- 1:14:21Speaker 8: just end the course, continue to work the game, execute
- 1:14:24Speaker 8: when we have to, execute on office when we have to,
- 1:14:28Speaker 8: and then we have to try to get consecutive stops
- 1:14:31Speaker 8: to try.
- 1:14:31Speaker 5: To win games.
- 1:14:33Speaker 3: This next question I found kind of interesting.
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: Someone had ask Rodney if he wanted Trey Johnson become
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: more aggressive and attacking the basket. Trade's been doing that
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: a lot of this season, and in fact, it was
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: a play, a critical moment in Saturday's game where he
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: did attack the basket, had a great.
- 1:14:52Speaker 3: Move, but the ball hung on the rim and fell off.
- 1:14:55Speaker 3: It didn't go in.
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: Nevertheless, Roddy Terry asked if he once traded me more
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: aggressive attacking the basket.
- 1:15:01Speaker 8: You know, it's hard for me to officiate the game.
- 1:15:03Speaker 8: I know this kid, a kid is gonna have a
- 1:15:05Speaker 8: chance to play at the next level. And well he
- 1:15:07Speaker 8: has a miss. He's a pretty elite and he's a
- 1:15:12Speaker 8: high skilled guy.
- 1:15:14Speaker 5: He's not gonna miss a lot of those shots.
- 1:15:15Speaker 8: That's why he has the chance to be a professional
- 1:15:17Speaker 8: player here in the near future.
- 1:15:20Speaker 5: You know, again, we can't make those calls.
- 1:15:22Speaker 8: I think he does put pressure in the basket at times,
- 1:15:25Speaker 8: and I do think there are times that sometimes he's
- 1:15:28Speaker 8: not protected as much as he needs to be because
- 1:15:30Speaker 8: he's one of the premier players in this league.
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: A lot of talkers, a lot of talk about this league,
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: the SEC, how balanced it is. You know, maybe you
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: can pull South Carolina out of it. They have yet
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: to win a conference game, although they played some teams close.
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: Everybody else has had their moments, and we know about
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: the the twice weekly grind that happens in the SEC.
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: And Roddy was asked if the games in the SEC
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: in his estimation come down to a final run, because
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: that's what happened with Vanderbilt on Saturday. The Long Wrorans
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: were up ten with about fourteen minutes together. We're still
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: up five with ten minutes to go, but Vanderbilt put
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: together a final run. Ole miss put together a late
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: run to beat Texas. The Longhorns had a huge second
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: half run to win on the road at LSU prior Saturday.
- 1:16:29Speaker 3: So that brought about this question.
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: Our games in this league decided by whichever team can
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: make that final run in a game.
- 1:16:39Speaker 8: No, everybody's gonna everybody's gonna have those spales, Roger in
- 1:16:43Speaker 8: this league. No one's just gonna have a game where
- 1:16:46Speaker 8: they just fully spread out and stay fully out in
- 1:16:49Speaker 8: front of you the whole time. Uh, basketball is a
- 1:16:52Speaker 8: game of runs. And uh, you know, I'll tell our
- 1:16:55Speaker 8: guys all the time, how do you stop and run?
- 1:16:57Speaker 8: You stop and run?
- 1:16:58Speaker 5: With consecutive stops on defense.
- 1:17:00Speaker 8: You know, how do you start a run. Youve got
- 1:17:03Speaker 8: to come down, execute, shut the ball, get the ball
- 1:17:05Speaker 8: moving side to side, attack on your terms.
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:17:09Speaker 5: And and usually good things happen for you.
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:17:13Speaker 5: But but again, you you have to be to you
- 1:17:15Speaker 5: know again, buckle.
- 1:17:17Speaker 8: Down, finish possessions. That's how you're able to stop runs.
- 1:17:21Speaker 8: And when you're on the road, you know you're gonna
- 1:17:23Speaker 8: have another runs coming. You know, home team's gonna continue
- 1:17:27Speaker 8: to continue to fight and keep coming at you. So
- 1:17:29Speaker 8: you know you have to be to put stops together.
- 1:17:32Speaker 8: And we we call them kills. You got to be
- 1:17:34Speaker 8: able to put some kills together where you have consecutive
- 1:17:36Speaker 8: stops throughout the course of the game. And you know
- 1:17:39Speaker 8: that's how you stop runs. You have to put you
- 1:17:41Speaker 8: have to put some kills together. Yeah, very very important
- 1:17:44Speaker 8: there in this league.
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: Uh. There's one other question for Rodney Terry and it's
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: about it and quite often he gets asked about his
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: team's mindset in terms of their awareness of their surroundings.
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: And what I mean by that is their awareness of
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: what this SEC is all about and how difficult it is,
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: and can they keep their head up when they take
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: some lumps, and do they recognize how good a league
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: this is. It's the number one league in the country,
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: and that there is still time. I mean, even if
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: you look at the bracketologyam we'll have one updated set
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: of We'll get to in a minute. But do they
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: realize that there is still time to do what they
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: have to do to land in the big Dance to
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: get into the NCAA Tournament.
- 1:18:33Speaker 8: Well, they definitely feel how good this league is. I
- 1:18:35Speaker 8: mean we've definitely felt that. I mean, this league is.
- 1:18:38Speaker 8: I don't know if I've ever had been a part
- 1:18:39Speaker 8: of a league there's been as ultracompetitive.
- 1:18:42Speaker 5: As this league is every night where you literally have.
- 1:18:46Speaker 8: To coach every game like it's an NCAA tournament game.
- 1:18:49Speaker 8: You know, there are no possessions off in this league.
- 1:18:52Speaker 8: You know, no, you could have had seasons where in
- 1:18:56Speaker 8: conference play every possession is not going to coach game.
- 1:19:00Speaker 5: But in this league, man, every possession is a big possession.
- 1:19:05Speaker 8: In the margin of ara that you have in this
- 1:19:07Speaker 8: league is very, very slim, you know, in terms of
- 1:19:11Speaker 8: you know, whether it's a half, whether it's five minutes
- 1:19:15Speaker 8: in the game, whether it's four minutes in the game.
- 1:19:17Speaker 8: You know, it's tough. You can play thirty you can
- 1:19:19Speaker 8: play thirty two good minutes and not gonna win in
- 1:19:22Speaker 8: this league. You know, you can play, you know, thirty
- 1:19:25Speaker 8: good minutes in this league, really good basketball at a
- 1:19:28Speaker 8: very very high level, and you got nothing to show
- 1:19:31Speaker 8: for it at the end of the day, because teams
- 1:19:33Speaker 8: are that good and they're they're that well coached in
- 1:19:36Speaker 8: this league. But I think for us, we've tried to
- 1:19:40Speaker 8: control we can control. We had a super competitive practice today.
- 1:19:44Speaker 8: We're still trying to continue to get better in the
- 1:19:46Speaker 8: areas that we have to be better in defensively, rebounding
- 1:19:51Speaker 8: the basketball. I think we've done a decent job of
- 1:19:54Speaker 8: taking care of the basketball.
- 1:19:55Speaker 5: At times.
- 1:19:55Speaker 8: We've had had a couple issues there that that have
- 1:19:58Speaker 8: cost us a little bit from from ball security, But
- 1:20:01Speaker 8: for better point, we've done a pretty good job over
- 1:20:03Speaker 8: the course of games with ball security. Just gets down
- 1:20:07Speaker 8: to again, you know, trying to be the most competitive
- 1:20:10Speaker 8: team for forty minutes. You got to play the play
- 1:20:13Speaker 8: these games all the way to the bowl literally in
- 1:20:15Speaker 8: this league every night.
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: So there's the thoughts there from Rodney Terry. We've got
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: some other college basketball notes to get to and some
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: pro basketball notes to get to when we continue here
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: on thirteen under the Zone.
- 1:20:37Speaker 7: It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
- 1:20:40Speaker 7: Texas Longhorns and Hall of Vaine broadcaster Craig Way.
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: Before I jump to pro basketball, one more, let's get
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: you updated in college basketball.
- 1:20:52Speaker 3: Jerry Palm is one.
- 1:20:53Speaker 8: Of the.
- 1:20:55Speaker 3: Rocketology experts that I did follow.
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: He's with CBS Sports and he had Texas as a
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: ten seed last week before the Vanderbilt lost. His racketological
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: prognostications are updated.
- 1:21:10Speaker 3: Let me ask you a question, Cameron, have you ever
- 1:21:13Speaker 3: been to Dayton, Ohio?
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: I have not, but I do know what's there. The
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: first four is there and what Jerry Palm has as
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: a pair of sixteen matchups Little Rock against American Nebraska,
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: Omaha as they just go buy Omaha against Merrimac.
- 1:21:31Speaker 3: Then he's got.
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: A pair of twelves meeting San Diego State and Arkansas
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: playing away in a film and in a matchup which
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: I find very I doubt this matchup would happen, but
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: I understand how he does things with his seating.
- 1:21:47Speaker 3: He's got a couple of elevens.
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: He's got Texas in there against Georgia and the Long
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: Words are getting ready to play Georgia here coming up
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: in about ten days, I think a couple of weeks.
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: I doubt they would meet again in the first four,
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: but it is possible. There is a provision in the
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: NCAA term that it does allow teams from the same
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: conference to meet in the first four, so it is
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: possible that it could happen.
- 1:22:11Speaker 3: But he would have them in the first four. And Dayton,
- 1:22:15Speaker 3: I've done the first four for Westwood one before.
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: It's really well run there, Dayton, As I said that
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: community wraps its arms around those two games on two
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: consecutive nights, much like Omaha does with the College World Series.
- 1:22:30Speaker 3: It's it's really well done.
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: Hopefully the Long Wrnes can stay in the field out
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: of the first four, but that's where Jerry Palm has
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: them right now. We'll see more as it goes a
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: little bit further.
- 1:22:41Speaker 3: All Right.
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: The other thing that's happening to night. You planning to
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: watch Luca suit up for the Lakers tonight? I think
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: you have to. You kind of have to, right is
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: Lakers debut for Luka Dancic tonight and more has seeped
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: through of the past twenty four to forty eight hours
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: about the machinations behind the scenes with this trade, and
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: that Mark Cuban apparently found out about it a little
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: late in the game, and of course he's not the
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: majority owner anymore, but he tried to talk Nico Harrison
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: and the others into not making the deal, but they
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: already had a handshake agreement done, handshake verbal. I think
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: it was the way it was described. So the deal
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: was done. And I think the thing that's disappointing is that,
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: however you feel about needing to make that trade, if
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: you're the Mavericke, that's one thing, but you don't have
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: to trash the number one fan favored on his way
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: out the door, and Nico Harrison had done a little
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: bit of that toward that end. Our good friend friend
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: for Shillem from a ESPN who knows the international game
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: very very well, had a long tweet.
- 1:23:57Speaker 3: Today about this. I'm gonna I'm going to give you
- 1:24:00Speaker 3: some of it here.
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: He says, I can't believe the new MAVs owner's trashing Luca.
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: I've been watching the kid since he was sixteen, and
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: I know some of the behind the scenes stuff.
- 1:24:12Speaker 3: Here's some perspective take it or leave it.
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: Number one, This comes from an all time NBA evaluator quote,
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: never ever ever trade a young superstar.
- 1:24:23Speaker 3: They're too hard to find. You know who? That sounds
- 1:24:25Speaker 3: like HB.
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: Brown, a great Hub Brown who hung it up yesterday.
- 1:24:30Speaker 3: I retired age ninety one.
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: Number two, the guy killed himself playing year round for
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: two or three seasons, representing both the Mavericks and the
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: Slovenian national team.
- 1:24:38Speaker 3: A few superstars in the league would do that. Three boy,
- 1:24:41Speaker 3: and this is spot on.
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: The Mavericks treated Jalen Brunson like a second round pick
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: right up to the time he signed with the Nicks.
- 1:24:48Speaker 3: Couldn't agree more with that. Number four, couldn't agree more
- 1:24:52Speaker 3: with this.
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: You will learn that Dallas is first, last, and always
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: a Dallas Cowboys town. Dirk made it cool to be
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: a MAVs fan. The people who pay for front row
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: seats wouldn't know a pick and roll from picking your nose,
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: but they came to games. Dirk gave us twenty years
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: and Luca was about to give us fifteen more. I
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: could not possibly agree with that more. And by the way,
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: that also applies to some quote unquote long warn basketball fans.
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: He would not know what pick and roll from picking
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: their nose or picking roll from you know something they don't.
- 1:25:25Speaker 3: They just don't a lot of them. That's just how
- 1:25:29Speaker 3: that is not everybody.
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: Something in damon on all long warn basketball fans, but
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: it is on some who don't really know some of
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: the stuff I've seen talking not necessarily about Rodny trit
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: just talking about the team and basketball that don't understand
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: a lot of the game. Number five Mark Stein good
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: writer had a great stat. The last time the Mavericks
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: played a game without Dirk or Luca was April nineteen
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: ninety eight.
- 1:25:54Speaker 3: You weren't even one year old, and that you were
- 1:25:57Speaker 3: just a few months old.
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: It wasn't that game also against the Lakers.
- 1:26:01Speaker 3: I think so.
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: Interesting.
- 1:26:04Speaker 3: Here's another thing.
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: It may be a good trade in the short run
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: if Ad plays seventy plus games the next three seasons
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: and wins a title, that's doubtful.
- 1:26:12Speaker 3: Totally agree with that.
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: I mean, everybody got excited Ad had a good game
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: the other day, and now he's hurt.
- 1:26:18Speaker 6: At least a month will be out God, and he
- 1:26:21Speaker 6: may require surgery. That would be season ending. All sides
- 1:26:24Speaker 6: to go down that.
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: Route, and the people said the Mavericks knew about that too. Well, Yeah,
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: trading for ad it's you know, it's the same riskue
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: you're taking on Luca. If if you're worried about Luca's health,
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: then why aren't you worried about Anthony Davis's health?
- 1:26:41Speaker 5: True?
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: Uh, never underestimate ego as a decision maker. There's now
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: basically nobody left from the Donnie Nelson era. I don't
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: think that's an all bad thing.
- 1:26:52Speaker 2: There.
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: There were a lot of mistakes and mishaps that happened
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: during that Donnie Nelson era.
- 1:26:59Speaker 3: Future Hall of Famer is gone?
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: Well, would he have traded Luca though?
- 1:27:02Speaker 3: No, No, would not have a.
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: Future Hall of Famer is gone and a potential future
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: Hall of Famers with the Knicks.
- 1:27:10Speaker 3: And this this is as damning as anything.
- 1:27:13Speaker 6: Can I can I push you back on that? So
- 1:27:15Speaker 6: Brunson was always gonna leave Dallas, Like, I don't. I
- 1:27:17Speaker 6: don't blame that so much. It's it's like those like
- 1:27:20Speaker 6: blaming R. C. Buford and Pop for Kawi Lee. If
- 1:27:23Speaker 6: Kai wanted to go back west, Jalen Brunson wanted to
- 1:27:27Speaker 6: go back east.
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: Well, and also I mean but they but they didn't
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: even make a competitive offer. Yeah, that's fair. That's you know,
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: that's that Maybe they knew he was gonna go back
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: East and therefore did not make a competitive offer. But
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: you could understand Mavericks fan for being upset with him
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: not making a competitive offer.
- 1:27:43Speaker 6: Sure, but the Jileen Brunson that we see today, he
- 1:27:47Speaker 6: does not exist if he still plays in the Mavericks.
- 1:27:49Speaker 3: I do not think so.
- 1:27:50Speaker 6: That would have been Lucas team. Brunson needed to go
- 1:27:54Speaker 6: to a team where he was the guy to be
- 1:27:56Speaker 6: able to sprout in becoming Jillen Brunson MV he contender
- 1:28:00Speaker 6: All Star.
- 1:28:01Speaker 3: Then, in my opinion, that's fair. One other thing.
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: Lakers GM Rob Polinka made this statement last Tuesday.
- 1:28:11Speaker 3: Quote it's a gift.
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: We're talking about a twenty five year old that's a
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: top three player in the universe. End quote just we know, yep.
- 1:28:20Speaker 6: If just just a fair warning, like if you want
- 1:28:22Speaker 6: to for those who want to be a future GM,
- 1:28:25Speaker 6: if you make a deal in the opposing gender trading
- 1:28:29Speaker 6: with says it's a gift, probably means you lost to
- 1:28:31Speaker 6: trade just just saying just saying.
- 1:28:35Speaker 3: Yeah, it's good, it's a good thought.
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: All Right, We'll be back with a few final thoughts
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: coming up here on thirteen under the Zone
