- 0:00Exodus chapter 21. Let's start in verse one.
- 0:04Now these are the judgments which you shall set before them.
- 0:08So you have to understand, we go back a few chapters and we're
- 0:11going to see that Moses, father-in-law, Jethro had given
- 0:16him really good advice that Moses decided to take.
- 0:21And now he's going and grabbing all of these elders of Israel
- 0:25from the tribes and he's amassing them together and he's
- 0:29going to give them them all the things that are on the Lord's
- 0:32mind. And we know that Moses is called
- 0:34the friend of God. And we know that Moses coveted
- 0:38the relationship that he had with God.
- 0:41We know that Moses spoke with God.
- 0:43We know that his face is going to shine brighter than the sun.
- 0:47And the people were afraid to even look at him.
- 0:50So we know that Moses was receiving and relaying and they
- 0:54were speaking as if they were on a first name basis.
- 0:58And now Moses is going to give all of these thoughts of God,
- 1:03all the commands of God, all of the mind of God, the words of
- 1:08God, He's going to share with the elders here in Israel.
- 1:12Let's go to verse 2. If you buy a Hebrew servant 6
- 1:17years he shall serve, and in the seventh he shall go out free for
- 1:21nothing. So isn't it just like God to
- 1:24tell them that they cannot just have a perpetual servant, A
- 1:29perpetual worker, someone who is there to do a service for them?
- 1:35They are to be let go on the 7th year, the year of Jubilee.
- 1:39They are to be free. And so you can see here that
- 1:43this is not the slavery that you and I have in mind, the cruel
- 1:47slavery that we have in our mind, the oppression that we
- 1:51have in our mind. These would be more like
- 1:53indentured servants. And there were many reasons that
- 1:56a person would sell themselves into this servitude.
- 2:00And a lot of times we're going to read that their masters were
- 2:04so kind that they chose to stay. We've got to get it out of our
- 2:08mind our understanding of this cruel slavery that we have verse
- 2:13three. If he came in by himself, he
- 2:16shall go out by himself if he were married and his wife shall
- 2:20go out with him. So however they came in as how
- 2:24they are to go out, and God is a God who is fair.
- 2:27And we can see that all of the law, everything that we're about
- 2:30to read, and we're going to get to spend a year here at the
- 2:35Mount of Law. We're going to see the
- 2:40Israelites hanging out here in this mountaintop experience.
- 2:46And we're going to get chapter after chapter after chapter
- 2:50after chapter of Moses receiving so many things from God.
- 2:55But what you need to understand is that all of this points to
- 3:00our need for a Savior. For if his master gave, his
- 3:07master had given him a wife, and she had borne him sons or
- 3:10daughters, the wife and her children shall be her masters,
- 3:14and he shall go out by himself. So it was thought of that he
- 3:18came in unmarried, and because of his position there within the
- 3:24employment of his master, that whatever he came in with he
- 3:28would leave with, and he became in single, he would leave
- 3:31single. Verse 5 And if the servant shall
- 3:34plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children, I will
- 3:38not go out free. 6 Then his master shall bring him unto the
- 3:43judges, and he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the
- 3:48doorpost, and his master shall bore his ear through with the
- 3:51gnaw, and he shall serve him forever.
- 3:54So here this was a ceremony that showed that the servant would
- 3:59like to stay on with the master. And this is not in a degrading
- 4:04way, this would be in a way where the servant sees that his
- 4:09life is much better within the home of his master. 7 And if a
- 4:16man sell his daughter to be a maid servant, she shall not go
- 4:19out as the men servants do. What if old Jacob would have got
- 4:23this with Dinah? And you can see that these women
- 4:29are going into the families of those that they are going to be
- 4:34betrothed to. That was the idea here is that
- 4:37the families would see a suitor family and they would take their
- 4:42daughter and they would place her in that family so that she
- 4:46would be much more accustomed to the ways that they do life.
- 4:50A If she please not her Master, who has betrothed her to
- 4:55himself, then she then shall he let her be redeemed to sell her
- 5:00unto a strange nation. He shall have no power saying he
- 5:04has dealt deceitfully with her. So the whole idea here is that
- 5:08she is going to go into that family, to become part of that
- 5:12family. And if for whatever reason the
- 5:14master says that he will not take her to be a wife, then she
- 5:20is to be redeemed. She is not to be sold out to a
- 5:23foreign nation, 9 And if he has betrothed her unto his son, he
- 5:29shall deal with her after the manner of daughters.
- 5:32So here she was not to be treated as just a article to be
- 5:39discarded. She is to be treated with
- 5:42dignity, friends, and that is what God is aiming at here. 10
- 5:47And if you take him another wife, her food and her clothing
- 5:50and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish?
- 5:54So she is to get this alimony, even though she never was to be
- 5:58married and he married someone else, she is to receive the same
- 6:02benefits as if they were married. 11 If and if he do not
- 6:08these three unto her, then shall she go out free without money.
- 6:13So she is to be let go. She is not to be kept as any
- 6:17kind of chattel. 12 He that strikes a man so that he die
- 6:23shall be surely put to death. So this is a great retribution,
- 6:29that if you are to kill someone, then your life is to be demanded
- 6:34of you. 13 And if a man lie not in wait, but God delivers him
- 6:38into his hand, then I will appoint you a place where he
- 6:41shall flee. So here he's talking about the
- 6:44sanctuary, places where he can go and grab the horns of the
- 6:48altar, and the wrath of someone who is kindled can be settled,
- 6:56and the hearing can come, and they can be of cool minds before
- 7:02they make their judgment. 14 But if a man comes presumptionly
- 7:08upon his neighbor to slay him with guile, thou shalt take him
- 7:12from mine altar, that he may die.
- 7:14So God is saying that grabbing the horns of the altar will not
- 7:17help a man who has premeditated murder. 15 and he that strikes
- 7:25his father or mother shall surely be put to death.
- 7:28We've already seen in the 10 commandments that we are to
- 7:31honor our father and mother so that our days on this life may
- 7:35be long. And we could see here that the
- 7:36disrespect and just completely disregarding all of your parents
- 7:44honor is shameful unto a holy God. 16 And he that steals some
- 7:52man and sells him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall
- 7:56surely be put to death. This is more of what we think of
- 7:59when we think of the barbarous attempt at the slavery that we
- 8:08were accustomed to here. You can see that this is
- 8:12treacherous unto a holy God of stealing a man.
- 8:16The other what we see in the Bible is what we would consider
- 8:20indentured servitude. Friends, This is them having a
- 8:24better place. This is them having a roof over
- 8:28their head. This is them having the love of
- 8:31a family. And this is them having a place
- 8:34in society where they're not cast off.
- 8:37And this is nothing like what we are accustomed to when we talk
- 8:41about slavery. This is more of what we
- 8:45understand is verse 16 of stealing a man and selling him.
- 8:4917 and he that curses his father or mother shall surely be put to
- 8:54death. Think about it, friends,
- 8:56whenever someone is so completely degraded and they're
- 9:00minded to base, and they do not understand that they are to
- 9:03honor and respect their parents, then it is a shameful thing. 18
- 9:12And if men strive together, and one strike another with a stone,
- 9:16or with his first, and he died not but keepeth his bed, so this
- 9:20is perhaps him being so injured that he has to lie in recovery.
- 9:2619 If he rise again and walk abroad upon his staff, then
- 9:30shall he that struck him be quit.
- 9:34Only he shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall cause him
- 9:38to be thoroughly healed. So here we can see that if there
- 9:43was a fight that broke out and one hurt the other to the point
- 9:47where he could not work, could not support himself or his
- 9:50family, then the other is to pay for his lost wages and lost time
- 9:55and he is to be concerned with him getting healthy again. 20
- 10:00And if a man strike his servant or his maid with the rod and he
- 10:04die under his hand, he shall be surely punished.
- 10:07So it is not becoming of someone who has the authority over
- 10:13another to mistreat them. 21 Notwithstanding, if he continue
- 10:20a day or two, he shall not be punished for his his money.
- 10:23So he's saying that if he is disciplined, it is OK.
- 10:27And this is much like when we discipline our children.
- 10:30Friends, there is a huge difference between discipline
- 10:33and beating. That is what you need to
- 10:36understand. This soft parenting will never
- 10:40amount to anything but a rebellious child.
- 10:44We need to understand that if you spare the rod, you spoil the
- 10:47child. You need to understand that
- 10:49there is a place at a time for correction, and that is what is
- 10:53spoken of here. 23 And if any mischief follow, then you shall
- 10:57give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand,
- 11:03foot for foot, burning for burning, wound for wound, and
- 11:06stripe for stripe. So here God lays out the ground
- 11:10rules for a society that has order and law and justice and
- 11:16peace. And these things are still
- 11:18applicable to day. Friends, we need to go back to
- 11:22the basics. Friends, we have gotten so
- 11:26completely off track. We think that we can just love
- 11:30people into hell and it doesn't work that way.
- 11:33There is so much mercy in the Old Testament and there's so
- 11:37much judgment within the New Testament.
- 11:40And when whenever we trade God for a hippie dippie, do Jesus
- 11:44who is OK with sin, we have made a grave air, Friends. 26 And if
- 11:53a man strike the eye of a servant or the eye of his maid,
- 11:57that it perished, he shall let him go free for his eyes sake.
- 12:00So here he's saying that if someone's wrath is kindled and
- 12:04they strike someone and they lose a body part, their payment
- 12:08enough is that anything that is owed is completely forgiven and
- 12:12they are free of any debt, and they are to go out free. 27 And
- 12:19if you strike out his manservant's tooth or his maid
- 12:22servant's tooth, he shall let him go for the tooth's sake. 28
- 12:26And if an ox gore a man or a woman and they die, then the ox
- 12:31shall surely be stoned and his flesh shall not be eaten, but
- 12:35the owner of the ox shall be quit.
- 12:37So it's lost enough that he does not get to eat on the on the ox,
- 12:43and he does not get to keep the ox.
- 12:45The ox is to die, but he is not responsible. 29 But if the ox
- 12:51were want to push with this horn in times past, and it has
- 12:55testified to his owner and he has not kept him in, but that he
- 13:00has killed a man or a woman, the ox shall be stoned and his owner
- 13:04shall also be put to death. So here you can see that it was
- 13:08negligence. It wasn't just a freak accident,
- 13:11it was negligence on the owner's part.
- 13:14So not only does the ox die, but so does the owner. 30 And if
- 13:19there be laid on him a sum of money, then he shall give for
- 13:23the ransom of his life whatsoever is laid upon him.
- 13:28So here you can see that if there is a chance to be
- 13:33redeemed, then he is to be redeemed and not have to give
- 13:36his life. 31 Whether he have gored a son or have gored a
- 13:40daughter, according to this judgment shall it be done unto
- 13:43him? So here you can see that
- 13:46whatever happens is on him, it's his responsibility, and he is to
- 13:50pay perhaps with his own life. 32 If the ox shall push a
- 13:56manservant or a maidservant, he shall give unto their master 30
- 14:00shekels of silver, and the ox shall be stoned.
- 14:04So there you go. If it is a accident in the sense
- 14:10that no one died, he is to pay, and the oxes to be killed. 33
- 14:16And if a man shall open a pit, or if a man shall dig a pit and
- 14:20not cover it, and an ox or a donkey falls in it, 34 the owner
- 14:24of the pit shall make it good and give money unto the owner of
- 14:28them, and the dead beast shall be his.
- 14:32So here you go. If a man was negligent and he
- 14:35dug a hole for whatever reason, and an animal fell in and died,
- 14:40he has to make it good. 35 And if one man's ox hurt another,
- 14:47that he died, then they shall sell the live ox, divide the
- 14:51money of it, and the dead ox also they shall divide.
- 14:56So they will have money, and they will also have food.
- 15:00And you can see here that it is of a wonderful place and a
- 15:07wonderful law to see that God cares for even the animals.
- 15:12God cares to make things good, make things right.
- 15:15And that is the whole crux of the whole situation of the whole
- 15:18matter here, friends, we can look it all over.
- 15:21You can make it and scrupulize it.
- 15:24You can look and see and look at the fine details.
- 15:26But what you need to know is that God is saying make it good.
- 15:31Whatever the cost, make it good. We do not need to pass the buck,
- 15:35pass the blame. We do not need to make excuses.
- 15:39At the end of the day, we just need to make sure that we make
- 15:42it good even if it costs us our very life.
- 15:45We make it good friends. 36 Sir, if it be known that the ox has
- 15:53used to push in Tom's past and his owner has not kept him in,
- 15:57he shall surely pay ox for ox and the dead shall be his own.
- 16:02Well in there friends, I hope you've been blessed by this
- 16:04amazing chapter in God's Word. God cares about every little
- 16:08detail. God cares about it all and our
- 16:11society. You can see all of the things
- 16:14coming unglued and undone and we need to get back to the basics.
- 16:19Not in every single detail, not in every single way, because
- 16:23this was for them for this time. But the principle still applies
- 16:28to us to this very day. We need to be a people that make
- 16:32it right, make it good friends. And aren't we thankful for the
- 16:35Lord Jesus Christ who paid all of our debt and redeemed us from
- 16:39sin and made us a people and an inheritance unto himself?
- 16:43And now we can know that. We know that we're going to bust
- 16:46heaven wide open. I love you, I'm praying for you.
- 16:49We'll see you back here tomorrow.
- 16:50Let's pray. Lord, we thank you for today, We
- 16:53thank you for this time, we thank you for your word, we
- 16:56thank you for who you are. Thank you God, you are so
- 16:59amazing. Thank you for allowing us to
- 17:01hold your word. And Lord, I pray that you'll
- 17:04help us to actually apply it to our lives.
- 17:08In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
