- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to Get to the Point podcast, and hey, this
- 0:03Speaker 1: is Terrell Lawrence here, and I got my co-host, my sidekick,
- 0:05Speaker 1: my partner, Chris Spencer in the building, but we have
- 0:08Speaker 1: a very special guest here today.
- 0:10Speaker 2: I don't know how we got her. She's so busy.
- 0:12Speaker 3: What?
- 0:13Speaker 2: Joy Taylor. Everybody knows who Joy Taylor is. Why is
- 0:17Speaker 2: nobody in the room clapping?
- 0:17Speaker 1: Yeah. Everybody knows who Joy Taylor is.
- 0:22Speaker 2: And if you don't know, you're about to know. How
- 0:35Speaker 2: are you?
- 0:35Speaker 4: I'm great.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I'm great.
- 0:37Speaker 5: First of all, where'd you get them J's? Those aren't
- 0:38Speaker 5: even J's. Those are ones.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Those are dunks.
- 0:41Speaker 4: These are like the women in sports edition.
- 0:45Speaker 2: I've never seen those. They part of the Brand Jordan
- 0:48Speaker 2: collection or no? No, no. Those are burgundy ones.
- 0:50Speaker 4: What's the little Bitcoin you got on the top?
- 0:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I think they're like the Title IX ones or something.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Oh.
- 1:00Speaker 4: But thank you. Yeah, I'm a sneaker girl. I can't
- 1:03Speaker 4: really do a lot of things that make me uncomfortable anymore.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:07Speaker 4: This is like a little too much. But I didn't
- 1:09Speaker 4: want to show up in that. That's not dressy for you,
- 1:11Speaker 4: is it? No, but I'm really entering my auntie era
- 1:14Speaker 4: where everything is very oversized.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Let me ask you something. Do you get offended if
- 1:18Speaker 2: people call you auntie?
- 1:19Speaker 4: I am 15 people's auntie, so no. I've been an
- 1:22Speaker 4: auntie for a really long time. My two oldest nieces
- 1:25Speaker 4: have children, so I have generational... Your oldest nieces have children? Yeah,
- 1:30Speaker 4: so I don't ever get offended. It's my role in
- 1:33Speaker 4: this life to be an auntie to not only my
- 1:36Speaker 4: family's children, but you know, other children, and I enjoy
- 1:39Speaker 4: the role. I'm very involved in these kids' lives, and
- 1:42Speaker 4: then I give them right back to their parents. There
- 1:45Speaker 4: you go. And live my own life. So, no, I'm
- 1:48Speaker 4: not offended by it. And I'm almost 40. I'm going
- 1:50Speaker 4: to be 40 in January. January what?
- 1:54Speaker 1: 17th. Capricorn. Hey!
- 1:55Speaker 2: Excuse me, sir. Thank you.
- 1:57Speaker 4: The goats. Yeah, so I'm looking forward to 40, because
- 2:02Speaker 4: then people can stop asking me, like... ridiculous questions like
- 2:06Speaker 4: I'm a child. Are you sure you don't want kids? Like, yeah,
- 2:11Speaker 4: I'm fucking 40, I got it. Can we cut some
- 2:12Speaker 4: of this?
- 2:13Speaker 2: You did already.
- 2:14Speaker 1: I'm about to ask you a ridiculous question. Perfect segue,
- 2:18Speaker 1: because I was like, when do you go from auntie
- 2:20Speaker 1: to mommy? Is that in the cars? Is that off
- 2:23Speaker 1: the table?
- 2:24Speaker 2: I mean, I'm a mommy. No, no.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I get that, but.
- 2:27Speaker 2: But mommy? Yeah, real mom.
- 2:28Speaker 4: With the ma? Yeah, like a mama. No, I don't
- 2:31Speaker 4: want kids.
- 2:31Speaker 2: You don't want kids? Never did?
- 2:33Speaker 1: No. No.
- 2:34Speaker 4: I agreed to have them at certain points in my life.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Sure. But it's not too late. You know that.
- 2:39Speaker 4: Oh, it's very much not too late.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:41Speaker 4: It's actually, the studies are coming out that, you know.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Older moms?
- 2:45Speaker 4: Y'all are the ones that need to get on a younger.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Really?
- 2:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:51Speaker 4: The sperm, the older sperm. So anyway, the point is, yes,
- 2:56Speaker 4: more women are actually having children in their 40s now.
- 2:58Speaker 5: No, no, because at my kid's school, you would see
- 3:01Speaker 5: a lot of 50-year-old women with, you know, this is,
- 3:04Speaker 5: my kids are in college now, so 10, 12 years ago,
- 3:07Speaker 5: 50-year-old women with toddlers.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 3:10Speaker 4: Yeah, because women, we basically fixed, and they're trying to
- 3:13Speaker 4: reverse this now for a variety of reasons, but we
- 3:16Speaker 4: basically fixed teenage pregnancy. our generation. So now more women,
- 3:22Speaker 4: it basically just moved to older women. So the women
- 3:24Speaker 4: that were having her children that were having kids in
- 3:27Speaker 4: their teens, It's that number has essentially moved to 40
- 3:30Speaker 4: year old women. So women are waiting longer to have kids.
- 3:32Speaker 4: They're being more strategic about it. They're setting up their
- 3:34Speaker 4: lives more, their careers more. And, you know, they're obviously
- 3:38Speaker 4: freezing their eggs. Like there's a lot of options for, yeah,
- 3:42Speaker 4: of course it's a good thing. You don't, I mean,
- 3:43Speaker 4: did we enjoy having a bunch of 16 year olds
- 3:45Speaker 4: running around trying to raise children? No. So, yeah, but
- 3:49Speaker 4: I don't, I don't want kids. I love kids. I
- 3:51Speaker 4: really enjoy the part where I give them back to
- 3:53Speaker 4: their parents and, But I do, I'm really involved in my,
- 3:57Speaker 4: I'm a big family person. I'm very involved in my
- 4:00Speaker 4: nieces and nephews' lives.
- 4:01Speaker 2: How many brothers and sisters do you have?
- 4:02Speaker 4: I have six. Six.
- 4:04Speaker 5: Everybody lives in the house at the same time?
- 4:05Speaker 4: No. No, no. My older siblings are about a decade
- 4:09Speaker 4: or more older than me. And then I have a
- 4:11Speaker 4: younger sibling as well. My dad remarried and had another daughter.
- 4:15Speaker 5: So, but.
- 4:19Speaker 4: Yeah, they're everywhere. Mason is with the Jets.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Yeah, we were going to get on that.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Is that Jason's?
- 4:23Speaker 4: Yeah, it's Jason's second oldest son. His oldest son is
- 4:26Speaker 4: at Miami playing safety for the Canes. And this is
- 4:30Speaker 4: his last year. And Mason is with the Jets going
- 4:32Speaker 4: into his second year.
- 4:33Speaker 5: How did you get into, I mean, I guess, of course,
- 4:36Speaker 5: big brother being who he is would cause you to
- 4:40Speaker 5: have an affinity for sports and a love for sports.
- 4:42Speaker 2: But what made you want to love this the way
- 4:46Speaker 2: you do?
- 4:47Speaker 4: So I grew up in Pittsburgh. And Pittsburgh is, you know,
- 4:50Speaker 4: one of those like traditional American sports cities. And I
- 4:57Speaker 4: just grew up around women that were very passionate sports fans.
- 5:01Speaker 4: My mother's a Cowboys fan, inexplicably. In Pittsburgh. Yeah. She's
- 5:06Speaker 4: a bit of a rebel. But I mean, she loved
- 5:09Speaker 4: when the Cowboys were good. So Emmitt Smith's her favorite player.
- 5:13Speaker 4: She loved Mike and, um, you know, that dynasty, but yeah, my,
- 5:17Speaker 4: my grandmother and my aunts lived together kind of like
- 5:19Speaker 4: the golden girls and they were rabid Steelers fans, but
- 5:24Speaker 4: really any team that was on that was playing, they
- 5:26Speaker 4: would have them on and, you know, turn the cartoons
- 5:28Speaker 4: off or whatever we were watching. They knew all the players,
- 5:30Speaker 4: they knew all the coaches. They were in moods if
- 5:33Speaker 4: they lost. So it was normal to me to grow
- 5:35Speaker 4: up around women like that that were passionate about sports.
- 5:38Speaker 4: And that whole city is just, it's a football city
- 5:43Speaker 4: from high school, college to pro. So it was always
- 5:47Speaker 4: very normal to me to be someone who had an
- 5:50Speaker 4: opinion about sports. I grew up playing sports. I played basketball, soccer, volleyball,
- 5:53Speaker 4: and track. Thought I was going to be Michael Jordan.
- 5:56Speaker 4: Stopped growing in seventh grade, so that was off the table.
- 5:59Speaker 4: I also thought it was going to be Cheryl Swoops.
- 6:02Speaker 2: How good were you?
- 6:03Speaker 4: I was not that good. Like basketball, I was not
- 6:05Speaker 4: that good. I was fat. I was very, very fast.
- 6:07Speaker 4: I ran track in college. So I was– all the
- 6:11Speaker 4: other sports really– I was very fast and very athletic.
- 6:13Speaker 4: So volleyball, I was the setter. But I could also jump.
- 6:17Speaker 4: I also weighed like 97 pounds then. So, you know,
- 6:19Speaker 4: just a little more lift. I'm not getting– Not getting
- 6:22Speaker 4: a lot of airtime these days. But, you know, at
- 6:24Speaker 4: the time I was really athletic and I loved sports.
- 6:26Speaker 4: So I was always at practice. I was always at
- 6:28Speaker 4: a game. And it gave me an opportunity to be
- 6:30Speaker 4: out of the house, which I wanted to be as well. So, yeah,
- 6:34Speaker 4: I was not very good at basketball. I was fast
- 6:36Speaker 4: and I fouled a lot.
- 6:38Speaker 1: So I have a follow up that because obviously you
- 6:39Speaker 1: said you have your family, pretty much sports fans. And
- 6:43Speaker 1: obviously you're an athlete yourself. And now being in the industry,
- 6:47Speaker 1: and like I said, I've been watching you. I've been
- 6:49Speaker 1: paying attention to a lot of your posts, social media posts.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Oh, boy. I just want to know, kind of like
- 6:54Speaker 2: right now, what.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Are your thoughts on the current landscape of sports as
- 7:01Speaker 1: we see it right now?
- 7:02Speaker 4: I think the sports coverage place is in a kind
- 7:06Speaker 4: of a weird place because we're all sort of adjusting
- 7:09Speaker 4: to all these new platforms.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Right.
- 7:12Speaker 4: And there are a lot of different.
- 7:15Speaker 4: Shows and podcasts, and then there's the network show still,
- 7:19Speaker 4: and then there's streaming. And I think consumers are just
- 7:22Speaker 4: trying to get their bearings on what their new habits
- 7:25Speaker 4: are going to be because there are so many options.
- 7:28Speaker 4: And because the networks are run the way that they are,
- 7:33Speaker 4: your favorite analyst may not be on a network show anymore.
- 7:36Speaker 4: So I think as far as the coverage goes, it's
- 7:40Speaker 4: pretty splintered right now, and I think just the consumer's
- 7:42Speaker 4: gonna decide, because I'm even trying to figure out, okay,
- 7:45Speaker 4: I don't really like this particular daily show. What am
- 7:48Speaker 4: I gonna watch, or who am I gonna listen to?
- 7:50Speaker 4: Am I gonna listen to this person's podcast? Because I'm
- 7:53Speaker 4: still somebody who really wants information. and not just reaction.
- 7:57Speaker 4: Like I want both. So I think from that perspective, it's,
- 8:01Speaker 4: it's in a little bit of a weird place. As
- 8:03Speaker 4: far as sports goes, it's never been a better time
- 8:06Speaker 4: to be in the business. It's weird, but there's more
- 8:10Speaker 4: jobs than ever. There's more coverage than ever. Corporations are
- 8:13Speaker 4: pouring money into sports because it's the last monoculture that exists.
- 8:18Speaker 4: And it's the last thing we watch live and people
- 8:21Speaker 4: gamble on it. So as far as like money goes,
- 8:24Speaker 4: attention and eyeballs, it's, of such an extreme value because
- 8:28Speaker 4: everything else you can watch when you feel like watching it.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:31Speaker 1: And the word you use splintered, especially when you think
- 8:34Speaker 1: about what just happened with Ryan Clark. I think you
- 8:37Speaker 1: kind of hear both sides of the coin about like,
- 8:40Speaker 1: you know, was he right? Was ESPN like right for
- 8:44Speaker 1: how they fired him? And then a lot of reaction
- 8:47Speaker 1: to his firing. What are your thoughts on it? And
- 8:49Speaker 1: then too, and then we'll touch a little bit on
- 8:51Speaker 1: Steven Allen. It's not my favorite guy. but do you
- 8:54Speaker 1: think he had any wiggle room to even save his job?
- 8:59Speaker 4: I mean, I'll be honest. I don't really follow the
- 9:03Speaker 4: trades that closely when it comes to these things. If
- 9:06Speaker 4: I don't have direct information, and I know Ryan, and
- 9:09Speaker 4: I have not talked to Ryan about it, so I
- 9:12Speaker 4: really don't have a whole lot of background on what
- 9:15Speaker 4: exactly happens. I will say, when it comes to the business, it's...
- 9:22Speaker 4: it's no different than show business. Shows get canceled. People
- 9:26Speaker 4: move on from talent.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Just like I play.
- 9:29Speaker 4: Players get cut. Like, you know, movies, you don't get,
- 9:33Speaker 4: you don't get another hit movie. Yeah.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Like you don't get casted again.
- 9:36Speaker 4: So I think Ryan is a great analyst. I think
- 9:40Speaker 4: he's incredibly talented and experienced, and he is going to
- 9:44Speaker 4: have a very long career in the business, regardless of
- 9:47Speaker 4: whether he's at the network or not. I also think,
- 9:51Speaker 4: what everyone is really starting to pay attention to is
- 9:54Speaker 4: that these networks, they're not loyal. There's no loyalty. They
- 9:59Speaker 4: don't owe you anything. And I feel... not lucky, but
- 10:04Speaker 4: I learned this very, very early in my time in L.A.
- 10:07Speaker 4: that you can't get too caught up in the fantasy
- 10:11Speaker 4: of it all. You're driving onto a huge set. But
- 10:14Speaker 4: you could still be.
- 10:16Speaker 5: Shocked when some of this BS happens, right?
- 10:18Speaker 2: Of course.
- 10:21Speaker 4: I've seen some massacres.
- 10:24Speaker 1: When I played with the Cowboys, and I had just
- 10:27Speaker 1: signed an extension, four-year deal after playing there, I was
- 10:30Speaker 1: 06 to 09. Right after that season, Signed a four-year deal,
- 10:34Speaker 1: 25 mil.
- 10:36Speaker 2: That was the end of the season. And then come,
- 10:38Speaker 2: I think it was like March.
- 10:40Speaker 1: April, I got invited to, Jerry Jones called my agent.
- 10:44Speaker 1: He's like, you know, there's an owner meeting going to
- 10:46Speaker 1: be in Fort Lauderdale. Can you stop by and just
- 10:49Speaker 1: hang out? We're just going to catch up. That was
- 10:51Speaker 1: when I got cut.
- 10:52Speaker 2: You're lying.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Literally, after signing a four-year deal in less than three months,
- 10:59Speaker 1: I got cut from that deal. I got cut from
- 11:02Speaker 1: the team.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:04Speaker 1: So what happens to that?
- 11:05Speaker 2: Is it guaranteed money for you guys?
- 11:06Speaker 1: No, like the guaranteed money, yeah. The signing bonus, yes,
- 11:09Speaker 1: that's mine. But that 25 mil, no.
- 11:12Speaker 4: Yeah, particularly like NFL contracts, you always got to read
- 11:15Speaker 4: the fine print.
- 11:16Speaker 2: Yeah, it's gone.
- 11:17Speaker 5: Right, because you guys get injured probably more.
- 11:20Speaker 1: And again, like I said, you've gone through your share of,
- 11:22Speaker 1: you know, incidents with your career. What is that like?
- 11:27Speaker 1: How do you navigate, you know, some of that? Because
- 11:29Speaker 1: like I said, I mean, there's a lot of things that,
- 11:31Speaker 1: you know, like you said, there's shock value to it.
- 11:34Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, and that's perfectly normal. Like you spend
- 11:37Speaker 4: time in a place, you make friends, it's part of
- 11:39Speaker 4: your routine. There's a pride in what it is you do.
- 11:43Speaker 4: So it's normal to be emotional about it and to
- 11:45Speaker 4: feel offended when people don't treat you like a human being,
- 11:48Speaker 4: which happens a lot. And that's really the part that
- 11:51Speaker 4: it's like, That's the unnecessary part. Sometimes people have to
- 11:55Speaker 4: make cuts, right? And it comes from above the people
- 11:58Speaker 4: that you're dealing with every day. Sometimes it's just an
- 12:02Speaker 4: executive that thinks they know better and they don't. But
- 12:05Speaker 4: you never really know until the decision is made. However,
- 12:08Speaker 4: I don't think ever that that is ever an excuse
- 12:10Speaker 4: not to treat people like human beings. And you never
- 12:13Speaker 4: know where you're going to end up. You never know
- 12:16Speaker 4: when you're going to work with somebody again or be
- 12:18Speaker 4: at the same company. I've had people treat me terribly.
- 12:21Speaker 4: And then five years later, I'm like the lead talent
- 12:26Speaker 4: and they're not, they don't work for me. But like,
- 12:28Speaker 4: if I wanted to be a dick to them, tough shit,
- 12:31Speaker 4: my guy. The tables have turned. So you have to
- 12:35Speaker 4: be careful.
- 12:35Speaker 2: It's funny when the rabbit has, you know, like that's
- 12:37Speaker 2: the saying.
- 12:37Speaker 4: Ain't no fun when the rabbit got the gun.
- 12:39Speaker 5: So who were your, the people you looked up to
- 12:42Speaker 5: who kind of gave you game for you to be?
- 12:44Speaker 5: Because I've watched you go through some of this controversy
- 12:47Speaker 5: and you, at least on camera, You act like, you know,
- 12:51Speaker 5: I got this. But who put you up on game
- 12:55Speaker 5: to handle the media, the scrutiny like that? Did you
- 13:00Speaker 5: have elder mentors, any other female panelists?
- 13:03Speaker 2: And why you think about that? I mean, we understand, like,
- 13:06Speaker 2: I've gone through some stuff, too.
- 13:07Speaker 1: You have your family as a support system, and then
- 13:10Speaker 1: you have a few select friends that you lean on
- 13:14Speaker 1: when those things happen.
- 13:16Speaker 4: I mean, coming up in the business, Dan Levitar was
- 13:19Speaker 4: a big mentor for me because I started in Miami
- 13:21Speaker 4: and obviously, you know, he's the king of Miami. I
- 13:24Speaker 4: learned a lot from Skip and Colin.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Skip.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Skip.
- 13:28Speaker 4: And Shannon. And I've learned a lot from Stephen A. Like,
- 13:33Speaker 4: I've had a lot of men in the business be
- 13:37Speaker 4: great mentors to me or just, you know, been able
- 13:40Speaker 4: to absorb their habits from proximity, like the way that
- 13:44Speaker 4: Skip preps is different than the way that Colin preps
- 13:47Speaker 4: and so on and so forth. But people who have
- 13:49Speaker 4: been in a business for as long as those guys
- 13:51Speaker 4: have and to reach the levels that they have, their habits,
- 13:55Speaker 4: your habits create. You are what you habitually do. So
- 13:58Speaker 4: watching them and how they prepare and how seriously they
- 14:01Speaker 4: take their work, that was very influential for me. As
- 14:03Speaker 4: far as navigating controversy, no one can really prepare you
- 14:07Speaker 4: for that. It's one of those things that you can
- 14:09Speaker 4: see a million people go through it You can even
- 14:12Speaker 4: have really close proximity to it. Until it's you in
- 14:14Speaker 4: the center of the storm, you cannot relate to what's happening.
- 14:19Speaker 4: And you can sympathize, but you cannot empathize until that happens.
- 14:23Speaker 4: And I've had a lot of people help me. It'd
- 14:26Speaker 4: be a long list of people that were supportive and
- 14:29Speaker 4: gave me great advice. I have a great team around
- 14:31Speaker 4: me that was very supportive and kept me from crashing out,
- 14:36Speaker 4: which I'm really grateful for. Yeah. But because, you know,
- 14:41Speaker 4: sometimes you just need a good crash out.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Right.
- 14:43Speaker 1: And when you crash out, is that just you do
- 14:46Speaker 1: it publicly or do you have.
- 14:48Speaker 4: Oh, no, I crash out privately, obviously, because I've never
- 14:50Speaker 4: crashed out.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Yeah, we've never seen it.
- 14:52Speaker 1: No.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Yeah. But I know you have like I know your
- 14:53Speaker 2: your main girls.
- 14:54Speaker 1: I know they're good friends of yours. Jameel Hill and
- 14:57Speaker 1: Carrie Champion. You know, those are those the females are
- 15:01Speaker 1: in that space that you kind of lean on.
- 15:04Speaker 4: No, I have a group of, uh, like MJ Acosta Ruiz.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Okay.
- 15:07Speaker 2: You're right.
- 15:08Speaker 4: I have a group of women that are, that I'm
- 15:10Speaker 4: very close with that. We have a, we have a
- 15:12Speaker 4: group chat and that's kind of like a safe space
- 15:14Speaker 4: to just sort of dump all your insanity.
- 15:15Speaker 5: Until somebody takes the chat and makes a book.
- 15:18Speaker 4: Oh no. We all going down. We all going down. Um, no,
- 15:23Speaker 4: like it's, I have, I'm very, very lucky. I have
- 15:25Speaker 4: a big sisterhood like network within the business. Um, women
- 15:31Speaker 4: that have known me my whole life, people that have
- 15:33Speaker 4: known me before I was in the business. So I
- 15:35Speaker 4: have a lot, I'm very lucky that I have a
- 15:37Speaker 4: lot of really great close friends that have been consistent
- 15:40Speaker 4: throughout my life and been supportive through other things besides,
- 15:43Speaker 4: you know, just business. So I'm grateful for that because
- 15:46Speaker 4: I know everybody does not have that.
- 15:48Speaker 5: So let's go back to college.
- 15:50Speaker 2: You went to, I know it starts with a B.
- 15:52Speaker 4: Berry.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Berry College.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Yes. My friend is the golf coach there. He's from, anyway.
- 15:59Speaker 5: Were you a journalist major?
- 16:02Speaker 2: Were you a communications major?
- 16:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I was a broadcaster.
- 16:04Speaker 5: So you know early on, I'm finna be in front
- 16:06Speaker 5: of the camera talking sports.
- 16:08Speaker 4: Yeah, and I was in school at the sort of
- 16:12Speaker 4: shift that media made. Before this most recent shift to
- 16:18Speaker 4: streaming and YouTube and all of that, the last one
- 16:20Speaker 4: was all of the Fox News and CNN shows were
- 16:24Speaker 4: shifting from news to to more opinion about the news.
- 16:28Speaker 4: Now they still call it news, but it's not technically news.
- 16:32Speaker 4: And sports were doing the same thing. It's when First
- 16:34Speaker 4: Take was growing into its height. Colin was, you know,
- 16:37Speaker 4: interviewing Obama. Like, These shows were becoming these huge cultural
- 16:41Speaker 4: institutional things that were different than just being in front
- 16:44Speaker 4: of the TV for SportsCenter because we were now getting
- 16:47Speaker 4: into the habit of checking our phones and the internet
- 16:50Speaker 4: for scores, highlights, et cetera. We didn't have to be
- 16:52Speaker 4: in front of the TV. So I saw that shift happening. Now,
- 16:55Speaker 4: I always knew I wanted to be a personality because
- 16:58Speaker 4: I was a stern and Oprah kid. So I knew
- 17:01Speaker 4: I have something to say and I'm not the kind
- 17:05Speaker 4: of person that would be a reporter to make it
- 17:07Speaker 4: about me. I really think journalism is like the bedrock
- 17:11Speaker 4: of democracy. Like it's important that we get real information.
- 17:16Speaker 4: Like we can have all these other things, but we've
- 17:18Speaker 4: got to have a place where we can get the
- 17:19Speaker 4: truth that's trusted, that's verified, that's responsible for what they're saying.
- 17:25Speaker 4: We don't have that anymore, but I really believe true
- 17:28Speaker 4: journalists are vital to society. I'm not vital to society.
- 17:34Speaker 4: I'm not that important. I talk about sports for a living.
- 17:38Speaker 4: Everything's going to be fine if I don't keep doing that.
- 17:41Speaker 4: So I knew I wanted to be a personality, and
- 17:43Speaker 4: that's why I didn't go the reporter or traditional host
- 17:47Speaker 4: or news route and got into radio.
- 17:50Speaker 1: So you went to school for this. You know, you
- 17:52Speaker 1: kind of saw and envisioned yourself being, like you said.
- 17:55Speaker 2: In front of the camera.
- 17:56Speaker 1: But like myself, like, you have potential to do something,
- 18:00Speaker 1: but you don't really know that that's.
- 18:01Speaker 2: You knew.
- 18:02Speaker 1: No, no, I didn't know. Like, I never knew that
- 18:05Speaker 1: I was going to play beyond the collegiate level.
- 18:08Speaker 2: I didn't. He didn't see his highlights. I'm telling you, too. Joy,
- 18:12Speaker 2: I have a documentary coming out. What'd you run in
- 18:14Speaker 2: the 40 at the combine?
- 18:15Speaker 4: 4-6-3.
- 18:17Speaker 2: That'll make you have some doubts. Exactly. That's what I'm saying.
- 18:22Speaker 2: So you were game fast?
- 18:25Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 18:26Speaker 2: There's track speed and then there's game speed.
- 18:29Speaker 4: That's not straight haters. I mean, Jason ran a 4.5.
- 18:31Speaker 4: He was a That's what I'm saying.
- 18:33Speaker 2: He ran faster than me at the combine. I ran
- 18:35Speaker 2: a four, six, three. Were you hurt? No. Oh, heavy frangle.
- 18:40Speaker 1: No, I didn't even really prepare for the combine because
- 18:46Speaker 1: I was playing basketball at the same time.
- 18:49Speaker 2: I'm just like, me and Joy, we're the only athletes
- 18:50Speaker 2: on this set right here.
- 18:51Speaker 1: We're very athletic.
- 18:53Speaker 2: You see my golf clubs over there? That's a hobby.
- 18:57Speaker 2: That's a hobby.
- 18:57Speaker 1: But yeah, again, like I played, I ran, I ran
- 19:01Speaker 1: a year, not a year, but they put me on
- 19:03Speaker 1: the track team.
- 19:04Speaker 4: Everyone used to run. They always used to.
- 19:05Speaker 2: Make the- That's in high school, but in college, they
- 19:08Speaker 2: just added me. They needed somebody to run.
- 19:10Speaker 4: Oh, you ran track in college?
- 19:11Speaker 2: Yes.
- 19:11Speaker 1: See what I'm talking about?
- 19:12Speaker 4: Make you high jump?
- 19:15Speaker 2: Really, Joy? That's what we do?
- 19:16Speaker 4: Yeah. We're just trying to figure out why you were
- 19:19Speaker 4: so slow.
- 19:21Speaker 2: Wow.
- 19:22Speaker 1: It's good.
- 19:23Speaker 2: I'm glad. You told us 460. We can't believe it. Yeah,
- 19:27Speaker 2: but I'm telling you why. But that was just a
- 19:30Speaker 2: bad run.
- 19:30Speaker 4: Did you run barefoot?
- 19:33Speaker 2: No. Flip-flops? Slides?
- 19:35Speaker 1: Listen, it was my senior year. My sports information director,
- 19:41Speaker 1: they even asked me, like, yo, are you sure you
- 19:43Speaker 1: want to play basketball your senior year, being that you
- 19:45Speaker 1: have an opportunity to play in the NFL? But me,
- 19:49Speaker 1: I didn't know that I had the skill set to
- 19:50Speaker 1: play in there. I'm like, no, I'm not going to
- 19:52Speaker 1: just forego my senior year playing basketball just to concentrate
- 19:55Speaker 1: on something that's unknown.
- 19:57Speaker 2: So I still played.
- 19:58Speaker 1: And then when I had my pro workouts, the coach
- 20:01Speaker 1: let me take away from practice. I went and did that.
- 20:04Speaker 1: And then I improved on my time, but my time
- 20:07Speaker 1: at the Combine I ran slower than I did on.
- 20:09Speaker 2: My individual workouts.
- 20:11Speaker 1: I improved a little bit, but just the day of,
- 20:13Speaker 1: I ran a 4.63.
- 20:14Speaker 2: That was what it was.
- 20:15Speaker 4: What did you run at your private workouts?
- 20:18Speaker 1: It was in between 4.52 and 4.55. And that was decent.
- 20:24Speaker 1: But I got faster as I played in the league.
- 20:27Speaker 4: When you really locked in?
- 20:28Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:29Speaker 1: When you caught the ball. Yeah, I was out there running.
- 20:31Speaker 1: My first three years, I try to tell people, I
- 20:34Speaker 1: was literally out there running scared.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Scared.
- 20:37Speaker 1: It was grown men. Do you see how big her
- 20:40Speaker 1: brother is?
- 20:41Speaker 2: Huge.
- 20:41Speaker 1: Like, coming across the middle. And he's running a 4'5.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Right, exactly.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Like, bro, I was out there, bro.
- 20:47Speaker 4: That's what I say all the time about when people
- 20:49Speaker 4: are talking about college quarterbacks that run. I'm like, that's adorable.
- 20:55Speaker 4: in college. These are grown men with beards and mortgages
- 21:00Speaker 4: and a couple families.
- 21:01Speaker 2: You remember Tebow? Yeah, Tim Tebow.
- 21:03Speaker 5: Was fast as hell in college.
- 21:06Speaker 2: No, he wasn't fast.
- 21:07Speaker 4: He was a great college player.
- 21:09Speaker 5: But when he got to the league, I'm just going on,
- 21:11Speaker 5: what's your point, with them grown-ass men and beards?
- 21:15Speaker 4: The improvising stuff, they always want that, and especially now,
- 21:19Speaker 4: because Mahomes makes it look so easy. But Yeah, that
- 21:22Speaker 4: doesn't work. These men are faster than you.
- 21:25Speaker 1: Yeah, you got linemen that are just as fast, if
- 21:27Speaker 1: not faster than the quarterback.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Or the running backs.
- 21:30Speaker 4: And they have amazing hands and footwork. Like they're dancing bears.
- 21:34Speaker 4: They're literally incredible athletes. And they're monsters.
- 21:39Speaker 2: You can get away with that in college, but not
- 21:41Speaker 2: in the pros. The game is way too fast. What's
- 21:44Speaker 2: your favorite sport to cover?
- 21:46Speaker 4: Football's my favorite sport to cover, yeah. I love the NBA.
- 21:49Speaker 4: I love the WNBA. I really like the Olympics. World
- 21:53Speaker 4: Cup was great this summer. But the NFL is like,
- 21:56Speaker 4: it's become a year-round story.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Right.
- 22:00Speaker 4: And I think there's just so many layers to the NFL.
- 22:03Speaker 4: It's obviously more players. There's more things to cover, but
- 22:06Speaker 4: I think the NFL.
- 22:07Speaker 2: So back to my point.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Who truly believed in you? Because I had some coaches
- 22:12Speaker 1: that believed in me when I didn't believe in myself.
- 22:15Speaker 1: to help me on my journey and get me to
- 22:17Speaker 1: where I am?
- 22:18Speaker 4: I think the first person would be Joe Rose, because
- 22:21Speaker 4: he gave me my first internship.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Joe Rose.
- 22:24Speaker 4: In Sports Talk Radio in Miami. And then DJ Laz
- 22:27Speaker 4: gave me my second one.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Okay.
- 22:29Speaker 4: And then Dan Cilio gave me my first... Well, Sid
- 22:33Speaker 4: Rosenberg gave me my first paid job. And then Dan
- 22:36Speaker 4: really pushed for me to get on air. And then
- 22:40Speaker 4: I would say my... Partner in Miami radio Jonathan Zaslow
- 22:44Speaker 4: because when the position opened It was a incredible opportunity
- 22:49Speaker 4: for me to go full-time on air as the like
- 22:51Speaker 4: full-time host and not the executive producer which was the
- 22:54Speaker 4: role that I had and that show gave me the
- 22:57Speaker 4: full confidence to be a Talent like I.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Was your first significant break.
- 23:03Speaker 4: Yeah, that's that show really made me a talent like it.
- 23:05Speaker 4: We had a lot of creative space and It's four
- 23:08Speaker 4: hours of local radio. That's a lot of time to fill.
- 23:11Speaker 4: So we had to come up with, you know, segments
- 23:13Speaker 4: and we were very integrated in the community. You know,
- 23:16Speaker 4: local radio is like one of those places where you
- 23:19Speaker 4: really embed yourself in the community. Like the fans are
- 23:23Speaker 4: really loyal. It's part of their daily routine. I got
- 23:26Speaker 4: in trouble once for talking about Santa Claus in a
- 23:29Speaker 4: derogatory way.
- 23:30Speaker 2: No, not Santa Claus. Yeah, I got in big trouble.
- 23:34Speaker 1: Yeah, talk about Santa Claus.
- 23:35Speaker 2: It slipped.
- 23:37Speaker 4: It slips.
- 23:38Speaker 2: The slip of the tongue.
- 23:39Speaker 4: It slipped and then people were pissed.
- 23:41Speaker 2: What'd you say?
- 23:42Speaker 4: Well, you know, I said the quiet part.
- 23:46Speaker 2: That he was black?
- 23:47Speaker 1: That he wasn't real?
- 23:48Speaker 2: How could you say that on air?
- 23:50Speaker 4: I know, it's crazy.
- 23:51Speaker 2: There's kids watching you.
- 23:52Speaker 4: I know, it's crazy.
- 23:54Speaker 5: I got in a lot of trouble.
- 23:56Speaker 2: Joy.
- 23:56Speaker 4: Per usual. But, yeah.
- 24:00Speaker 2: The wait is over.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Football is here. And so is DraftKings. DraftKings is now
- 24:05Speaker 1: live in all 50 states. One app, every sport, nationwide.
- 24:10Speaker 1: New DraftKings customers. Sign up with code TO81. Spend $ 5
- 24:15Speaker 1: to get $ 200 in rewards within 21 days. Includes all markets.
- 24:20Speaker 1: That's code TO81. In partnership with DraftKings. The crown is yours.
- 24:28Speaker 2: All right, we're on to our DraftKings sponsor segment.
- 24:31Speaker 1: That's right. The wait is over. Football is here, and
- 24:35Speaker 1: so is DraftKings. The DraftKings Sports app is now live
- 24:39Speaker 1: in all 50 states. That means from Texas to California
- 24:43Speaker 1: to Florida. Every fan is in on the excitement. And
- 24:46Speaker 1: this September, DraftKings is giving customers the opportunity to get
- 24:50Speaker 1: boosted every football game day.
- 24:52Speaker 2: That's right.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Every game day, all month long, DraftKings customers can get
- 24:57Speaker 1: a football profit boost. All right.
- 25:00Speaker 5: It's time to get to it.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Yeah, let's get it.
- 25:02Speaker 5: Let's get to the pick brought to you by DraftKings.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Bears.
- 25:07Speaker 5: versus the Panthers. I'm sorry, I'm going to say it
- 25:09Speaker 5: the way my kids say it.
- 25:10Speaker 2: Bears v. Panthers.
- 25:13Speaker 5: You got your boy, Caleb. Are they the real deal? Because,
- 25:15Speaker 5: you know, my boy Buddy Lewis is a big Bears fan,
- 25:17Speaker 5: and every year is, this is our year.
- 25:19Speaker 1: I think they're poised. They're in a better position now.
- 25:22Speaker 1: I think with all the things that Caleb went through
- 25:24Speaker 1: last year, I think leadership was sometimes in question.
- 25:26Speaker 2: This year playing against the Panthers, Bryce Young. Is he
- 25:29Speaker 2: the truth? I think he has a couple of years
- 25:32Speaker 2: growing pains under his belt. Is he the truth? I
- 25:35Speaker 2: think this is the year. Okay, that's what I want
- 25:36Speaker 2: to know. Make a break. This is a make-a-break year
- 25:39Speaker 2: for him. Okay, so you said Bears, Panthers, Bears, huh?
- 25:42Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 25:42Speaker 2: All right, Packers, Vikings, who you got? Packers, Vikings. I'm
- 25:47Speaker 2: going to go Packers. Why is that?
- 25:49Speaker 1: Kyler Murray's a new system, new receivers, new environment for him,
- 25:53Speaker 1: so he's going to get accustomed to that. I think
- 25:56Speaker 1: just with the familiarity with the Packers and what they
- 25:59Speaker 1: have intact, Matt McFleur, the head coach there, They're going
- 26:03Speaker 1: to be ready and poised more so, I think, than
- 26:05Speaker 1: the Vikings.
- 26:05Speaker 2: So I'm going with the Packers on this one. Commanders v. Eagles.
- 26:09Speaker 5: Jaden Daniels.
- 26:10Speaker 2: A little bit of preseason drama.
- 26:11Speaker 1: Preseason.
- 26:13Speaker 2: Did I say mama or drama? Preseason, in-season. Is she
- 26:16Speaker 2: doing too much?
- 26:17Speaker 1: Man. He just needs to, number one, stay healthy.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Again, injuries.
- 26:21Speaker 1: That knocked him out last year. I think he's going
- 26:24Speaker 1: to get to a point to where he's going to
- 26:26Speaker 1: have to tell his mom, like, Mom, chill out.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Right. I'm grown.
- 26:29Speaker 1: I'm old enough to do this. I appreciate what you're doing,
- 26:32Speaker 1: but I think she's taking a lot of limelight and
- 26:37Speaker 1: making a lot of headlines for him that's unwanted.
- 26:39Speaker 2: No A.J. Brown.
- 26:41Speaker 5: How they gonna fare?
- 26:42Speaker 2: Eagles?
- 26:43Speaker 1: They got Devontae Smith. I like the new additions of
- 26:47Speaker 1: the new receivers. I think if they can really develop
- 26:51Speaker 1: and really be a solid two receiver to Devontae, I mean,
- 26:55Speaker 1: I'm already knowing what I'm going to get from Jalen.
- 26:57Speaker 2: Jalen, he's cool as a cucumber.
- 27:00Speaker 1: And then defensive-wise, they play how they should play, Eagles football,
- 27:05Speaker 1: then they're going to be right there. But I'm going
- 27:07Speaker 1: with the Eagles on this one. One app, every sport,
- 27:10Speaker 1: all 50 states. New DraftKings customers, sign up with code TO81.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Spend just five bucks and get 200 in total rewards
- 27:18Speaker 1: within 21 days.
- 27:19Speaker 2: Includes all markets.
- 27:21Speaker 1: That's code TO81 in partnership with DraftKings. The crown is yours.
- 27:27Speaker 3: The crown is yours. Did Joy get in a lot
- 27:50Speaker 3: of trouble as a kid? I was a good teenager.
- 27:52Speaker 3: I was a bad kid, though.
- 27:53Speaker 2: I was a menace. So what would you say joy
- 28:19Speaker 2: is as an adult? What is joy?
- 28:21Speaker 4: There's different versions of joy as an adult, for sure.
- 28:25Speaker 4: I think this current joy is still, I'm still deciding
- 28:29Speaker 4: how much terror I'm going to reign on the earth. But,
- 28:34Speaker 4: you know, I think you change a lot through different experiences.
- 28:38Speaker 4: Like the person I was before I came to L.A.
- 28:40Speaker 4: is a completely different person. That was 10 years ago.
- 28:42Speaker 4: I was 29 then. So I'm very different now. I've
- 28:45Speaker 4: gone through a lot of things that have changed me.
- 28:47Speaker 4: I learn like I'm a person that absorbs experiences and
- 28:51Speaker 4: information very deeply. So I don't know. I mean, I
- 28:54Speaker 4: think I think I'm still I still have a little
- 28:56Speaker 4: bit of empathy left, like like two drops or so.
- 29:00Speaker 4: And I'm really trying to not go full villain.
- 29:03Speaker 2: What kind of things make you angry?
- 29:04Speaker 4: Everything makes me angry.
- 29:05Speaker 5: Everything.
- 29:06Speaker 4: I'm a very cantankerous person. Is that why you're single?
- 29:08Speaker 4: I'm like very Larry David. Everything bothers me. I'm consistently annoyed.
- 29:12Speaker 4: And then that way, I feel like it's better that
- 29:15Speaker 4: way though. Because if I wasn't, then I would really
- 29:17Speaker 4: like spike to anger from like resting state. So yeah,
- 29:21Speaker 4: I kind of stay a certain level of irritated and
- 29:23Speaker 4: then it doesn't jar me so much when people bother me.
- 29:27Speaker 4: I am very much in therapy.
- 29:28Speaker 1: Yes.
- 29:29Speaker 2: We have someone that we could recommend.
- 29:30Speaker 4: I have multiple therapists.
- 29:32Speaker 2: Really?
- 29:32Speaker 4: And medication.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Well, we just had him on the show. John Sally,
- 29:36Speaker 2: we could, I mean. Oh yeah.
- 29:37Speaker 4: John Sally's a therapist?
- 29:38Speaker 2: He has a. hospital yeah Where they administer ayahuasca. Ayahuasca.
- 29:44Speaker 4: I'm going to do that. I'm going to do it
- 29:45Speaker 4: next year.
- 29:46Speaker 2: John's a guy.
- 29:46Speaker 4: I'm going to go, I think, to Peru, maybe.
- 29:48Speaker 2: Oh, he does it right in his house in Pasadena.
- 29:51Speaker 4: Oh, no. I need to go somewhere a little more earthy.
- 29:54Speaker 2: Well, where you go, you will think you're in.
- 29:57Speaker 1: According to him.
- 29:58Speaker 4: Have you done it?
- 30:00Speaker 2: No, but you're talking to.
- 30:02Speaker 5: Two dudes who barely, well, he drinks, but he ain't
- 30:04Speaker 5: never done that.
- 30:05Speaker 1: But he almost convinced me, like, I'm considering.
- 30:07Speaker 2: He made it sound so good.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Right, exactly.
- 30:10Speaker 4: I'm going to throw up, for sure.
- 30:12Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. The purging, right? That's the purge?
- 30:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:15Speaker 4: I want to do it. I'm kind of in my, like,
- 30:19Speaker 4: Dora the Explorer phase. Like, I want to go to
- 30:21Speaker 4: Antarctica because I've gone to all six continents. And now
- 30:25Speaker 4: I'm like, you know what? I think I could probably
- 30:27Speaker 4: use a little ancestral release. But I don't want Karen
- 30:30Speaker 4: from Joshua Tree taking me to Wakanda. I want a
- 30:34Speaker 4: little more.
- 30:36Speaker 4: I don't want the plants to have been imported from
- 30:38Speaker 4: that far away. But I'm going to do it. But
- 30:42Speaker 4: they're like, you're going to need to do it like
- 30:43Speaker 4: two or three times. I'm like, I don't know if
- 30:44Speaker 4: I'm up for all that.
- 30:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I just want to experience it like at least
- 30:47Speaker 2: maybe once.
- 30:48Speaker 4: Yeah, I'll let go of like one thing.
- 30:49Speaker 2: Right, yeah, exactly.
- 30:52Speaker 5: Have you investigated already? You know the name of your shaman?
- 30:57Speaker 4: Shaman?
- 30:57Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 30:58Speaker 4: I haven't like sat down to really plan it yet.
- 31:00Speaker 4: I just know that I want to do it and
- 31:01Speaker 4: I'm going to. I need a spotter though. Right. Like
- 31:05Speaker 4: I won't feel comfortable traveling out of my body without
- 31:08Speaker 4: like a sober spotter. So I need somebody to come
- 31:10Speaker 4: with me that's not going to do it to like
- 31:11Speaker 4: watch me.
- 31:12Speaker 2: I'll be your spotter.
- 31:13Speaker 1: We can spot each other.
- 31:14Speaker 4: With all due respect, I'm going to have a woman
- 31:15Speaker 4: spot me.
- 31:17Speaker 3: Okay.
- 31:17Speaker 1: No, no, it's all good. It's all good.
- 31:18Speaker 2: I'm disappointed, but it's okay.
- 31:20Speaker 4: You're welcome to come on the trip.
- 31:22Speaker 2: Okay. Yeah. What is the spotter's duty?
- 31:26Speaker 4: To just watch me. I don't want to be in
- 31:29Speaker 4: no control of my body and not have anybody.
- 31:31Speaker 5: I was trying to sell you while you could be
- 31:34Speaker 5: better than the person.
- 31:35Speaker 1: Right, exactly.
- 31:35Speaker 4: I could be better than your spotter. I mean, I'm
- 31:36Speaker 4: sure you're a great spotter, but I don't want to
- 31:40Speaker 4: not be in control of my body.
- 31:41Speaker 2: You're being great hands.
- 31:42Speaker 4: I don't drink to like black out.
- 31:44Speaker 1: Right.
- 31:45Speaker 4: You know, this happens, but like that's not, you know,
- 31:47Speaker 4: I don't want to be.
- 31:49Speaker 1: See these hands?
- 31:49Speaker 2: You're being great hands. That's it. Have you ever blacked out?
- 31:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:54Speaker 2: Really?
- 31:55Speaker 4: She's like, I'm a millennial. I grew up in the
- 31:56Speaker 4: binge drinking era, of course.
- 31:58Speaker 2: I've never blacked out before. I don't drink, so I
- 32:01Speaker 2: don't know.
- 32:01Speaker 4: You don't drink, and you are not a big drinker?
- 32:03Speaker 1: No, on occasion.
- 32:04Speaker 4: I went to college and partied in South Beach for
- 32:11Speaker 4: two years.
- 32:12Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. How much partied? Yeah.
- 32:15Speaker 1: A lot.
- 32:16Speaker 2: Molly's?
- 32:17Speaker 4: No, I don't really. I do drugs, but not those
- 32:20Speaker 4: kind of drugs.
- 32:20Speaker 2: Black tar heroin?
- 32:22Speaker 4: I've done cocaine twice. It's not for me. I'm not
- 32:25Speaker 4: an upper person.
- 32:26Speaker 5: Jamie Foxx has the greatest joke. He says he don't
- 32:28Speaker 5: like cocaine. He just likes the smell.
- 32:32Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm not trying to be up all night. It
- 32:34Speaker 4: sounds awful. It's a terrible pitch.
- 32:35Speaker 2: I mean, I've heard so many, you know, experiences.
- 32:37Speaker 5: Yes, I heard your wee-wee don't go up.
- 32:41Speaker 2: I'm curious. That's what I am.
- 32:43Speaker 4: I don't think cocaine's for you. I've got to be
- 32:44Speaker 4: honest with you.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Hell no. No, I would never do cocaine. I've never
- 32:48Speaker 2: been that curious. I've never been that curious.
- 32:54Speaker 4: I honestly don't get it. Like, having done it, I'm like,
- 32:56Speaker 4: this is not fun.
- 32:57Speaker 5: Were you high?
- 32:58Speaker 2: Like ecstasy, I mean, I was also drinking.
- 33:00Speaker 4: So like, I just felt like more drunk, but it didn't,
- 33:03Speaker 4: it wasn't like fun. I didn't have like the time
- 33:05Speaker 4: of my life. Like people describe like Molly or MDMA,
- 33:08Speaker 4: like it's really fun. And I can't do those either.
- 33:10Speaker 4: I don't really, I'll do mushrooms. Mushrooms are great.
- 33:13Speaker 2: Yeah. I've heard about that.
- 33:14Speaker 4: Um, mushrooms are the superior drug actually really yeah they're
- 33:18Speaker 4: the best first of all you can microdose so you
- 33:20Speaker 4: can take a tiny itty bitty little bit see how
- 33:22Speaker 4: you feel.
- 33:24Speaker 5: A lot of comedians are doing microdosing a lot of
- 33:26Speaker 5: writers a lot of people in the entertainment industry because
- 33:28Speaker 5: it allows them to focus it allows you.
- 33:30Speaker 4: To focus and like you control how much you take.
- 33:32Speaker 4: Like if you take a little, little bit and you
- 33:35Speaker 4: don't really, you're not feeling it, you just let it
- 33:36Speaker 4: go away and then don't take anymore. Now if you
- 33:38Speaker 4: take like three mushrooms and you're tripping balls, like that's not,
- 33:42Speaker 4: I don't recommend that.
- 33:43Speaker 2: Right.
- 33:44Speaker 1: I'm scared that I may do too much because I'm like,
- 33:47Speaker 1: I tried an edible, I think it was during the pandemic.
- 33:50Speaker 1: And I told a person like, yo, I've never tried it.
- 33:52Speaker 2: And it's like, oh, you just take a half.
- 33:54Speaker 1: And so we sat there and they gave me a
- 33:57Speaker 1: half and she took a whole one And so we
- 34:00Speaker 1: were just sitting in there and nothing happened.
- 34:03Speaker 4: And so she was- There were things happening.
- 34:06Speaker 1: She had taken hers and she was like, yo, you
- 34:08Speaker 1: don't feel anything? And I'm looking at her, I'm like, no.
- 34:11Speaker 1: I'm like, what am I supposed to feel? And then
- 34:13Speaker 1: she was like, you sure? She was like, well, maybe
- 34:15Speaker 1: you need to take some more.
- 34:17Speaker 2: Right.
- 34:18Speaker 5: So then- No, you don't need to take more.
- 34:20Speaker 1: I'm like, well, what am I supposed- I was confused
- 34:22Speaker 1: because I'm like, I'm not feeling anything. And in like
- 34:25Speaker 1: 20 minutes, she was already feeling something. And I'm like-
- 34:28Speaker 1: I'm just not feeling what she thinks I'm supposed to feel.
- 34:31Speaker 2: So I just, I just haven't tried it again.
- 34:34Speaker 4: Did you take the other half?
- 34:36Speaker 2: No, I just, yeah, I did. But I, Nothing really happened.
- 34:40Speaker 4: Edibles are tricky. Because of my size?
- 34:43Speaker 2: I don't know if it was because of my size.
- 34:45Speaker 1: I need to have more. And it's good to be cautious.
- 34:47Speaker 1: It's better to be safe than sorry. So I'm like, okay, well,
- 34:50Speaker 1: maybe this is not my calling. I don't need to
- 34:52Speaker 1: try this.
- 34:52Speaker 4: Yeah, but I've gotten like the same brand and taken
- 34:55Speaker 4: half of one and had a great day. And then
- 34:56Speaker 4: the next day, it's not the same. Edibles are very tricky.
- 35:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:01Speaker 4: You got to watch them. But the answer usually is
- 35:03Speaker 4: not more.
- 35:04Speaker 5: I've had one edible as well. And me and my
- 35:07Speaker 5: boy were about to go play golf. And so I
- 35:10Speaker 5: went inside and I was changing. He was waiting for
- 35:13Speaker 5: me in the car. And I came back and I
- 35:15Speaker 5: was like, dude.
- 35:16Speaker 1: I don't get it.
- 35:16Speaker 2: I'm not high. I don't feel no high. I said,
- 35:19Speaker 2: but I did change seven outfits. He goes, motherfucker, that's high.
- 35:24Speaker 2: I said, oh. Because I'm expecting the stereotype. I'm thinking Snoop.
- 35:30Speaker 4: Yeah, it's not like it. Drugs are not ever how
- 35:32Speaker 4: they show you on TV.
- 35:33Speaker 2: That's how I was.
- 35:34Speaker 5: I wanted to be that, at least for the hour
- 35:36Speaker 5: or two that I was high.
- 35:37Speaker 4: Yeah, that's not. I feel like people who make that
- 35:40Speaker 4: kind of drug content have never done drugs. Because it
- 35:46Speaker 4: doesn't make sense. It's not how, like, you take mushrooms
- 35:50Speaker 4: and all of a sudden the walls are all grass
- 35:53Speaker 4: and and the speaking to me.
- 35:55Speaker 2: Some people do get that psychedelic.
- 35:57Speaker 1: You just didn't.
- 35:58Speaker 4: Yeah, if you eat that many mushrooms, but like if
- 36:02Speaker 4: you eat a tiny little itty bitty little crumb piece,
- 36:05Speaker 4: you're cool.
- 36:05Speaker 2: I didn't realize how commercial it is. I was at
- 36:07Speaker 2: a friend's house.
- 36:09Speaker 4: Keep in mind. We are coming to you from Los Angeles, California. Okay,
- 36:13Speaker 4: so wherever you are in the world, mushrooms may not
- 36:16Speaker 4: be as readily available as might be a little bit stronger. Yeah,
- 36:20Speaker 4: and so I do want to give that. Don't do
- 36:22Speaker 4: drugs if you're kids.
- 36:23Speaker 5: So I'm at this guy's house. He pulls out, do
- 36:26Speaker 5: you guys remember Sucrettes?
- 36:27Speaker 2: The little coughs?
- 36:29Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah. He had mushrooms in that like it
- 36:33Speaker 5: was candy.
- 36:34Speaker 4: Well, yeah, because mushrooms are disgusting. So you have to
- 36:37Speaker 4: put them in something so you can eat them. They're gross.
- 36:40Speaker 4: They're disgusting. So you have to, like, put them in
- 36:42Speaker 4: chocolate or, like, a pill or, yeah, one of the candies.
- 36:46Speaker 4: You can't just eat it.
- 36:47Speaker 1: It's gross.
- 36:47Speaker 2: This is very educational. I'm listening to you, too. Are
- 36:49Speaker 2: you okay with that popcorn.
- 36:50Speaker 1: Not being layered?
- 36:51Speaker 4: I don't know how I became, like, the drug person.
- 36:54Speaker 2: We're going to be on public.
- 36:56Speaker 5: Yo, you want to know something about drugs?
- 36:57Speaker 2: Go to Joy Taylor.
- 36:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I've got all the answers.
- 36:59Speaker 2: We're going to switch gears here.
- 37:01Speaker 1: Which brings me to my point.
- 37:03Speaker 2: Because you mentioned kids and things of that nature.
- 37:05Speaker 1: Obviously... You had your women in the space that you
- 37:09Speaker 1: looked up to. What about the little girls that have
- 37:11Speaker 1: seen you, followed your journey? Can you kind of just
- 37:15Speaker 1: share with us, like, who is Joy Taylor to the
- 37:17Speaker 1: aspiring young girls that want to be, you know, Joy
- 37:21Speaker 1: Taylor one day?
- 37:23Speaker 4: Well, I hope I'm honest. You know, I hope I
- 37:26Speaker 4: don't sell this journey in a way that is overly aspirational.
- 37:31Speaker 4: It's very hard. I mean, show business is hard. This
- 37:35Speaker 4: is what it is. People talk about the media and
- 37:38Speaker 4: the spaces that we're in like there is some sort
- 37:41Speaker 4: of system to success, and there's not. We're not doctors.
- 37:44Speaker 4: We're not lawyers. We're not teachers. We're not accountants. We're
- 37:49Speaker 4: not government officials. There are systems to certain professions that
- 37:54Speaker 4: are very clearly outlined. You know what the path is.
- 37:57Speaker 4: You know what's the next test you need to study for.
- 37:59Speaker 4: You know what the journey is going to be, how
- 38:01Speaker 4: long you have to be at this position. That's not
- 38:03Speaker 4: what this business is like. There's a million different ways
- 38:06Speaker 4: to get to the end destination. And you are not
- 38:09Speaker 4: going to make any money. So don't get into it
- 38:13Speaker 4: for money.
- 38:13Speaker 2: Are you saying it.
- 38:16Speaker 1: Because.
- 38:17Speaker 2: She's a woman?
- 38:18Speaker 4: No, no one. None of you are going to make
- 38:20Speaker 4: money for a very long time.
- 38:22Speaker 5: Say that part because I'm looking at your outfit.
- 38:25Speaker 2: You do make money.
- 38:26Speaker 1: Oh, no.
- 38:26Speaker 2: It's just going to take a while.
- 38:27Speaker 4: I got money. In the beginning. For a very long
- 38:32Speaker 4: time because there is this misconception, I think, for young
- 38:36Speaker 4: people that there are just especially with. social media, that
- 38:39Speaker 4: everything is just gonna happen this fast. And just because
- 38:42Speaker 4: you have this viral moment, now all of a sudden
- 38:44Speaker 4: you have this whole career laid out before you when
- 38:46Speaker 4: you've never done live television, you've never sat down and
- 38:49Speaker 4: done interviews, you've never been on the sidelines, you've never
- 38:51Speaker 4: been in a studio trying to wrangle and get this
- 38:55Speaker 4: show done and get out on the break and make
- 38:57Speaker 4: sure you read the sponsor correctly and the boss is
- 39:01Speaker 4: in here and this audio just went down so you
- 39:04Speaker 4: gotta carry the show for 20 minutes. There's a lot
- 39:06Speaker 4: of experience that you need. It is not an overnight
- 39:09Speaker 4: success situation. and they are not going to pay you
- 39:12Speaker 4: for a really long time. So it's just important that
- 39:16Speaker 4: it be said because they don't tell you that part.
- 39:19Speaker 4: It's all just this glamorous studio stuff and it is
- 39:22Speaker 4: an amazing, fun job. It's the best job, but it
- 39:26Speaker 4: is really hard and you're gonna get told no forever.
- 39:30Speaker 4: You still get told no. You still get told no.
- 39:32Speaker 4: I get told no all the time. But I mean,
- 39:34Speaker 4: in the business, like there's something that you audition for
- 39:36Speaker 4: you don't get. There's some kind of business proposition that
- 39:39Speaker 4: this person was making it up and didn't really have
- 39:41Speaker 4: the funding for. This shows in the works and then
- 39:43Speaker 4: that funding backs out. Like being told no failure is
- 39:48Speaker 4: as much a part of the job as success is.
- 39:50Speaker 4: And so I hope that. Anyone, but particularly young women
- 39:54Speaker 4: that look up to me or want to do what
- 39:56Speaker 4: I do or what any of the women in the
- 39:58Speaker 4: business do, just know that it's not going to be easy.
- 40:02Speaker 4: Nothing is easy, right? I wish people would stop saying
- 40:04Speaker 4: things are easy. Nothing is easy. Success is not easy
- 40:07Speaker 4: in any business that you're in. But this business is
- 40:10Speaker 4: show business. So on top of it being covering in
- 40:13Speaker 4: a space where people don't want you to be, people
- 40:15Speaker 4: are going to constantly be critical of everything that you do.
- 40:17Speaker 4: You have to be right all the fucking time. You
- 40:19Speaker 4: can't mispronounce a name. You can't say a coach coaches
- 40:21Speaker 4: for a team they don't coach for. You can't say
- 40:23Speaker 4: a player got traded when they really got got cut.
- 40:26Speaker 4: Like you got to be perfect. But it is a
- 40:28Speaker 4: great job. And there needs to be more of us.
- 40:32Speaker 4: And if it's something that you absolutely love, you should
- 40:35Speaker 4: absolutely do it and you can have success. And there's
- 40:37Speaker 4: more ways to be successful now than there was when
- 40:39Speaker 4: I started because you have the Internet and you can
- 40:42Speaker 4: build your whole thing on the Internet for free.
- 40:45Speaker 1: Right.
- 40:45Speaker 2: But you said that there's no money in it.
- 40:49Speaker 4: There's no money in the beginning.
- 40:50Speaker 2: Right.
- 40:51Speaker 1: And then, again, so, yeah, which brings me to my point. Like, yeah,
- 40:55Speaker 1: people watching you and you say it's not easy, it's hard.
- 40:58Speaker 1: You've been there. You know what it takes.
- 41:00Speaker 2: But what about those people out there that are like, oh, well,
- 41:03Speaker 2: you know, it's not what you know, it's who you know.
- 41:05Speaker 1: Or, and be respectful, respectfully saying, okay, well, what do
- 41:09Speaker 1: you do to get to a certain position?
- 41:11Speaker 5: You know what I mean?
- 41:12Speaker 2: What do you say to that?
- 41:14Speaker 4: It is who you know.
- 41:16Speaker 2: All day.
- 41:18Speaker 4: Relationships are very important. And stop telling young people that
- 41:22Speaker 4: it isn't who you know. It is who you know.
- 41:25Speaker 4: Absolutely who you know. What you do at your internship
- 41:29Speaker 4: and how hard you work is who you know. The
- 41:31Speaker 4: people that you networked with while you were there, that
- 41:33Speaker 4: you followed up with, that you asked questions, that you
- 41:35Speaker 4: asked to get coffee with, that you wanted advice from,
- 41:38Speaker 4: that you asked to take a look at your resume
- 41:41Speaker 4: or check out your reel, the people that you reach
- 41:42Speaker 4: out to online to be your mentor, the NABJs, the
- 41:47Speaker 4: you know, the different conferences that there are, the networking
- 41:52Speaker 4: events that you go to, that is who you know. Like, yeah,
- 41:57Speaker 4: and people want to hire people that they know. Let's
- 42:00Speaker 4: just equate it again to Hollywood. Most of these production
- 42:03Speaker 4: companies work with the exact same people for every production
- 42:06Speaker 4: they do. Why do they do that? Is it gatekeeping? No,
- 42:10Speaker 4: it's because they know They're going to work. They're going
- 42:14Speaker 4: to be on time. They're going to be responsible. They're
- 42:16Speaker 4: going to be prepared. I don't have to worry about
- 42:18Speaker 4: if the lighting is set up or if the mics
- 42:20Speaker 4: are plugged in.
- 42:20Speaker 2: Because I've worked with them before.
- 42:21Speaker 4: I've worked with them before. I know they take pride
- 42:23Speaker 4: in what they do. I know they're responsible. I know
- 42:25Speaker 4: they're adults. I know they're professionals. I know that they
- 42:28Speaker 4: are going to show up and do what I need
- 42:29Speaker 4: them to do so I don't get embarrassed or I
- 42:31Speaker 4: don't lose money. So I'm working with the same people constantly.
- 42:34Speaker 4: It is a very inclusive business. People want to hire
- 42:36Speaker 4: people they know. They want to hire people whose work
- 42:39Speaker 4: they know. And Colin says this all the time. Most
- 42:42Speaker 4: of your employment decisions are going to be made when
- 42:44Speaker 4: you're not in the room. So great question. It is
- 42:47Speaker 4: who you know. And how do you get to know them?
- 42:49Speaker 4: You have to put yourself out there. You have to
- 42:52Speaker 4: go to these conferences when they're in your town. You
- 42:54Speaker 4: have to go and do internships. You have to follow
- 42:56Speaker 4: up with the people that you interned with. You have
- 42:58Speaker 4: to be willing to do work as an intern. Ask questions,
- 43:03Speaker 4: ask for responsibility. Give ideas that you have. Don't give
- 43:06Speaker 4: your best ideas, but you know what I mean? Be
- 43:09Speaker 4: an active participant in your opportunities as well. Nobody owes
- 43:13Speaker 4: you anything. And it's hard for people who know people,
- 43:16Speaker 4: so it's especially difficult for people who don't have any connections.
- 43:20Speaker 4: That I am incredibly sympathetic to, but the entertainment business
- 43:25Speaker 4: is not a meritocracy. You've got all kinds of nepo babies. Yeah,
- 43:32Speaker 4: because they grew up on Hollywood sets. So they know
- 43:37Speaker 4: these other people. Is it fair? No, it's not fair.
- 43:41Speaker 4: Does it matter? No, it does not. And the people,
- 43:45Speaker 4: nobody cares. And the people who are extremely talented will
- 43:47Speaker 4: eventually cut through. The ones who are relentless. He was slow.
- 43:51Speaker 5: I still made it.
- 43:55Speaker 2: In that sports talk world, who's the GOAT?
- 43:58Speaker 4: I can keep it diplomatic and say Colin, but I
- 44:02Speaker 4: think Colin is just, I think he's just the best
- 44:07Speaker 4: in the business. Like to be able to talk down
- 44:09Speaker 4: barrel to a camera for three hours is an incredibly
- 44:13Speaker 4: difficult thing to do.
- 44:14Speaker 2: With no guests, just bam.
- 44:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:15Speaker 4: I mean, he has guests, but he doesn't need them.
- 44:17Speaker 2: I'm just saying sometimes he's just.
- 44:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:19Speaker 4: And he's been doing it for, I don't know, 30 years.
- 44:23Speaker 4: He's incredibly researched and very prepared. He takes the show
- 44:27Speaker 4: very seriously. Yeah. He's one of the most professional people
- 44:32Speaker 4: I've ever worked with. So I would say Colin, just
- 44:34Speaker 4: because he stood the test of time. And I think
- 44:37Speaker 4: everybody that's watched Colin's show likes Colin. They don't necessarily
- 44:42Speaker 4: agree with everything that he says. Colin is also, he's
- 44:45Speaker 4: someone who will adjust his opinion. So if he gets
- 44:49Speaker 4: confronted with new information consistently, and it's like, yeah, this
- 44:53Speaker 4: is obviously not a good take, he will change his opinion.
- 44:56Speaker 2: That's great, yeah.
- 44:57Speaker 4: Yeah, and he might have been right at that time,
- 44:59Speaker 4: but he's not right now. So he's not going to
- 45:00Speaker 4: keep saying that he's right about something that is obviously
- 45:02Speaker 4: not true anymore. So I do like that about Colin's
- 45:06Speaker 4: style and how he approaches the show. As far as
- 45:09Speaker 4: like the debate thing, I mean, I think Skip was
- 45:12Speaker 4: really the godfather of that. And I think Stephen A
- 45:16Speaker 4: perfected it. Yeah, I mean, I think there's been a
- 45:18Speaker 4: lot of... I mean, to me, Jemele Hill was why
- 45:22Speaker 4: I got into the business because I was able to
- 45:24Speaker 4: see her do what I wanted to do, which was
- 45:26Speaker 4: be equal to the men on the set on a
- 45:29Speaker 4: daily show. But yeah, I mean, I would probably say
- 45:33Speaker 4: those four.
- 45:34Speaker 2: You mentioned Stephen A. and you mentioned, obviously, NABJ.
- 45:37Speaker 1: How do you personally feel about him and, obviously, the
- 45:40Speaker 1: reaction to, obviously, his reaction to the thumbs down?
- 45:44Speaker 2: And are you a part of the NABJ?
- 45:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 45:47Speaker 4: I don't know if my membership is still active. I've
- 45:52Speaker 4: been to NABJ conferences before. I have not been on
- 45:55Speaker 4: a cruise. I have been to NABJ conferences before, and
- 45:59Speaker 4: I do think they're very helpful for young people who
- 46:01Speaker 4: are getting into the business. I think it's a great
- 46:04Speaker 4: networking opportunity. It's a great networking opportunity amongst peers your
- 46:08Speaker 4: age to meet new people and, you know, It's important
- 46:13Speaker 4: to get face time with people. So I always encourage,
- 46:17Speaker 4: you know, young people who are in the business to
- 46:18Speaker 4: go to those. I haven't really been that active with
- 46:22Speaker 4: NABJ as of recent. I did see, you know, the
- 46:26Speaker 4: thumbs down. I am, you know, a Stephen A fan
- 46:30Speaker 4: and he's a friend of mine. So just for clarity,
- 46:35Speaker 4: I do not agree with everything that Stephen A.
- 46:37Speaker 5: Says or does.
- 46:38Speaker 2: Nobody does. I don't even think Stephen does.
- 46:40Speaker 4: I don't. And if he and I discuss it, I
- 46:44Speaker 4: have no problem telling him that I disagree with. But
- 46:47Speaker 4: I have lots of friends that I disagree with on
- 46:49Speaker 4: things politically. And there are lines that I draw with
- 46:53Speaker 4: people politically because at some point you're telling me I
- 46:56Speaker 4: don't deserve to have rights, in which case it's no
- 46:59Speaker 4: longer political. You actually just hate me. which I don't
- 47:02Speaker 4: think is what Stephen A.
- 47:03Speaker 5: Is doing.
- 47:04Speaker 4: I mean, listen, if you're going to put yourself out
- 47:06Speaker 4: there and have really strong opinions about political things, about
- 47:11Speaker 4: social issues, everyone is not going to agree with that.
- 47:14Speaker 2: Especially black women. Especially black women. Yeah.
- 47:18Speaker 4: So there's going to be pushback. And, you know, I
- 47:22Speaker 4: think that Stephen A. has done, well, I don't think,
- 47:26Speaker 4: I know he's done a lot for black people throughout
- 47:29Speaker 4: his career. So to say that he hasn't is just,
- 47:32Speaker 4: that's just not true.
- 47:33Speaker 2: No, I wouldn't say that.
- 47:35Speaker 4: As far as like his political opinions, there's a lot
- 47:37Speaker 4: of things I don't agree with what he's saying politically
- 47:39Speaker 4: or on social issues.
- 47:40Speaker 2: Have you talked to him about this topic?
- 47:41Speaker 4: I have not. He and I have not discussed this, no.
- 47:43Speaker 2: We have a surprise for you.
- 47:44Speaker 4: Stephen A.
- 47:47Speaker 2: I mean, I'm going to talk to him about it eventually.
- 47:49Speaker 2: At some point. Yeah.
- 47:52Speaker 4: I don't care. What do I care? Are they going
- 47:53Speaker 4: to give me a thumbs down?
- 47:55Speaker 5: No.
- 47:56Speaker 4: I don't think so.
- 47:57Speaker 5: I think what crushes not crushed him, but really made
- 48:01Speaker 5: people disappointed is that after it went down, he went
- 48:05Speaker 5: to Fox to speak to those guys.
- 48:08Speaker 2: Yeah, he went to the other.
- 48:10Speaker 1: And I think for him to be as smart as
- 48:14Speaker 1: he is, he just has no wherewithal. There's no accountability,
- 48:18Speaker 1: it seems, for what he said and the reaction. That
- 48:23Speaker 1: everybody has gotten from what he said and what he
- 48:25Speaker 1: did and then he goes and he does that. Like
- 48:27Speaker 1: you said, it goes to Fox. Well, I don't get it.
- 48:30Speaker 4: I think I obviously would have not gone to Fox.
- 48:36Speaker 5: It's just sometimes he just, it seems like whoever his
- 48:39Speaker 5: team is, or listen, I know his team.
- 48:43Speaker 2: He's not listening to his team.
- 48:45Speaker 4: I don't, like I said, most of what he's talking
- 48:48Speaker 4: about politically, I disagree with. Like probably 98%. And when
- 48:52Speaker 4: I have friends who I disagree with, I speak to
- 48:55Speaker 4: them personally about it. And since we haven't spoken personally
- 48:58Speaker 4: about it, I don't really have an opinion. You can
- 49:00Speaker 4: call out a cop out if you want, but I'm
- 49:02Speaker 4: a face-to-face type of bitch. So I'm not going to,
- 49:06Speaker 4: you know, I'm not going to give opinions about things
- 49:08Speaker 4: that I haven't had a conversation with him about. I don't.
- 49:12Speaker 5: But you can still have an opinion without having to
- 49:13Speaker 5: talk to the person.
- 49:15Speaker 4: Right, but I'm also not going to allow that opinion
- 49:18Speaker 4: to affect our personal relationship. And so, look, NABJ is
- 49:24Speaker 4: entitled to do whatever it is they want to do.
- 49:27Speaker 4: And as I said, I believe I said earlier... those
- 49:31Speaker 4: choices have consequences too. Because rather than having a conversation
- 49:36Speaker 4: with someone, which I'm not sure, I'm not up to speed,
- 49:40Speaker 4: but if they didn't have a private conversation with someone
- 49:43Speaker 4: as influential as Stephen A before they issued that thumbs down.
- 49:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think they did.
- 49:50Speaker 5: And I think his gripe also is he's been trying
- 49:52Speaker 5: to have a conversation with the president of the NABJ
- 49:56Speaker 5: and she wants to have it in private.
- 49:58Speaker 2: And he's like, no, no, you outed me in public.
- 50:00Speaker 1: Exactly. In public. Exactly.
- 50:02Speaker 5: So that, in that regard, I can understand his point
- 50:05Speaker 5: by we should talk in public.
- 50:07Speaker 2: I mean, we should talk in, you know, let the
- 50:08Speaker 2: world hear both of us.
- 50:09Speaker 4: Yeah, that's, I mean, I don't think you do that.
- 50:13Speaker 4: I don't think that if you feel that strongly about
- 50:16Speaker 4: someone's commentary or how they're moving, and this is someone
- 50:19Speaker 4: who is very involved with black journalists and has spent
- 50:23Speaker 4: his career as a black journalist. Now, he's not a
- 50:27Speaker 4: functioning journalist now. He is a pundit. but at one
- 50:30Speaker 4: point was a journalist. If you didn't have a conversation
- 50:34Speaker 4: with him before you issued that, how do you expect
- 50:38Speaker 4: him to react to that? Because that conversation is not
- 50:40Speaker 4: hard to do. And that also circles back to what
- 50:43Speaker 4: we were talking about earlier with how you treat people,
- 50:45Speaker 4: like in firings or when you're working with people, did
- 50:48Speaker 4: you have a conversation with them? Because people don't like
- 50:52Speaker 4: to have conversations anymore. They really don't like the ickiness
- 50:56Speaker 4: of it, the awkwardness of it. I have done a
- 50:58Speaker 4: lot of work because my family's generation, one of our
- 51:03Speaker 4: generational traumas is avoidance. So I've done a lot of
- 51:09Speaker 4: work in therapy. I'm still not great, but I'm getting
- 51:13Speaker 4: better at like, okay, this is an issue. Let's talk
- 51:16Speaker 4: about it. Let's address it. Let's not wait six months
- 51:19Speaker 4: until everything explodes and it's not fixable. And then things
- 51:23Speaker 4: are happening. Let's talk about it. It's going to suck
- 51:26Speaker 4: for now, but it's better that we sort this out.
- 51:29Speaker 4: And so, like I said, I'd rather talk about it.
- 51:32Speaker 2: Joy, have you ever been engaged or married? Both. And
- 51:36Speaker 2: is this something you would like to do again?
- 51:37Speaker 4: I am not pressed to get married. I would get
- 51:42Speaker 4: married if it made like legal sense. Or if it really,
- 51:48Speaker 4: really mattered.
- 51:49Speaker 2: It sounds like if he signed a prenup.
- 51:50Speaker 4: Oh, there will be prenups for sure. There will be prenups.
- 51:54Speaker 4: I think you should always have a prenup. Like even
- 51:57Speaker 4: if you have nothing, I think you should have a prenup.
- 51:59Speaker 1: Have you ever.
- 52:00Speaker 4: A wedding contract is an insane contract. You would never
- 52:03Speaker 4: sign a contract, ever. You wouldn't sign a contract for
- 52:06Speaker 4: a car. You wouldn't sign a contract to rent a
- 52:09Speaker 4: bike without looking at the contract. Just give it a
- 52:12Speaker 4: good once over. You're talking about you're assigning yourself to
- 52:16Speaker 4: another human being and you don't have any edits, no
- 52:19Speaker 4: red lines. It's crazy. They've pitched us on this as
- 52:24Speaker 4: like not romantic. Marriage is absolutely a business arrangement as
- 52:27Speaker 4: much as it is a romantic arrangement. You're going to
- 52:30Speaker 4: buy property together. You might create future humans together, right?
- 52:34Speaker 4: You have to split assets. You make money and put
- 52:36Speaker 4: it into account. Why would you not have a conscious?
- 52:38Speaker 4: Why wouldn't you just have somebody look it over, right?
- 52:41Speaker 4: Just check out what's going on in your state. Like, yes,
- 52:44Speaker 4: you should have a prenup.
- 52:44Speaker 2: That was the soundbite I was looking for.
- 52:46Speaker 4: What? The prenup?
- 52:48Speaker 2: Whatever you just did.
- 52:49Speaker 4: Oh, I mean, I just think it's crazy. I think
- 52:51Speaker 4: it gets pitched as like this is some sort of
- 52:54Speaker 4: non-romantic thing or you're preparing for its end. people are
- 52:58Speaker 4: human beings. Shit happens. It doesn't matter how great the
- 53:02Speaker 4: intentions are at the beginning. You never know. You might
- 53:04Speaker 4: change your mind. You might become the demon. Like you
- 53:07Speaker 4: have to, and sometimes it's not even that the relationship
- 53:10Speaker 4: like went bad or toxic or horrible. Sometimes you guys
- 53:13Speaker 4: have just had enough of each other. Like the kids
- 53:15Speaker 4: are grown. We want to live our separate lives. Like, Okay, cool.
- 53:18Speaker 4: Now we don't have to spend $ 50, 000 on a divorce
- 53:21Speaker 4: lawyer to split all this shit up.
- 53:23Speaker 2: 50? That must have been in Iowa or something. Listen, whatever.
- 53:28Speaker 4: But the point is, you have to have a prenup.
- 53:30Speaker 4: But yeah, I would get married again, but I would
- 53:32Speaker 4: not do it without a lot of considerations.
- 53:35Speaker 2: That's right. You were married before.
- 53:37Speaker 4: I was married, yeah.
- 53:38Speaker 5: And then I got engaged.
- 53:40Speaker 2: So it's not in the cards for you at the moment.
- 53:44Speaker 1: No more.
- 53:45Speaker 4: No, I wouldn't say it's not in the car. It's
- 53:46Speaker 4: not what I, it's not like.
- 53:47Speaker 5: That's why T.O. got his arms out today. He's never
- 53:50Speaker 5: dressed like that before.
- 53:51Speaker 4: I kind of oiled up. I don't care about getting married.
- 53:56Speaker 4: I would say that. I care more about a partner.
- 53:59Speaker 4: I care more about like, you know, living a healthy, fun,
- 54:05Speaker 4: like fulfilling life.
- 54:07Speaker 1: So you're looking for like a partner, like a partnership,
- 54:09Speaker 1: not necessarily a marriage relationship.
- 54:12Speaker 4: Being married doesn't validate the partnership.
- 54:14Speaker 2: Right, exactly. So that's why I asked that.
- 54:16Speaker 1: So in thinking about that, what's your type? And then
- 54:20Speaker 1: what's your preference? Because there's a difference.
- 54:23Speaker 4: I don't think I have a physical type.
- 54:24Speaker 2: Everybody has a type.
- 54:25Speaker 1: No, not really.
- 54:26Speaker 2: There's something you won't date. Everybody has a type.
- 54:28Speaker 4: I won't date a bitch.
- 54:32Speaker 5: Okay. What about a guy 5'1, 240?
- 54:35Speaker 4: Well, I'm 5'2, so 5'1, 240. Yeah, you ain't going.
- 54:39Speaker 1: To date him, are you?
- 54:40Speaker 4: I don't think so.
- 54:41Speaker 1: No offense.
- 54:42Speaker 4: Everybody has a type and everybody has a preference.
- 54:45Speaker 1: Yeah, but do I have to say that?
- 54:45Speaker 4: No, because it's what you're physically attracted to. I will
- 54:48Speaker 4: date a shorter than normal man because I'm 5'2. So
- 54:51Speaker 4: a man who's like 5'8 or 5'9 is still significantly
- 54:54Speaker 4: taller than me.
- 54:54Speaker 2: Right, so I'm just trying to get over what are
- 54:55Speaker 2: you attracted to? Can he make less money than you?
- 54:59Speaker 4: Yeah, of course.
- 55:00Speaker 2: Okay.
- 55:01Speaker 4: I'm attracted to... One, people who are very passionate. Like,
- 55:06Speaker 4: you have to have things that you care about. You
- 55:08Speaker 4: have to have a full life. Keep in mind, I'm
- 55:10Speaker 4: not dating, like, 23-year-olds. I'm dating a grown man. So
- 55:13Speaker 4: I'm not, like, in the project phase of my life.
- 55:16Speaker 4: And I don't care.
- 55:17Speaker 2: You're going to mold this baby?
- 55:18Speaker 4: Yeah, no. I don't have children. I'm certainly not bringing
- 55:21Speaker 4: in a man-child. So... You got to be passionate about
- 55:25Speaker 4: what you do, whatever it is that you do. You
- 55:27Speaker 4: have to have your own stable existence outside of me.
- 55:30Speaker 4: I like people that have full lives, that have friends
- 55:32Speaker 4: and other interests. Like I'm not the center of their
- 55:34Speaker 4: universe because you're not going to be the center of mine.
- 55:36Speaker 4: And like men who are like kind, emotionally intelligent people.
- 55:41Speaker 4: Like I don't really like, and I haven't always been
- 55:43Speaker 4: this way. I've dated plenty of assholes. I've made lots
- 55:46Speaker 4: of mistakes. I've been attracted to the bad boy and
- 55:49Speaker 4: like all that. I've done all those things. I really
- 55:52Speaker 4: don't like having people around me that don't make me
- 55:55Speaker 4: feel safe. And that goes for men and women. So
- 55:59Speaker 4: for men, it's almost like a higher threshold because of,
- 56:04Speaker 4: you know, trauma and everything else. But I just like,
- 56:06Speaker 4: I like men to make the people around them feel safe. Like,
- 56:11Speaker 4: you know, it sounds like a bunch of cliches, but
- 56:13Speaker 4: I really just don't like a fuck-ass man.
- 56:17Speaker 2: Okay.
- 56:18Speaker 4: I mean, you all know exactly who I'm talking about.
- 56:20Speaker 2: I have no idea.
- 56:21Speaker 4: You've never....
- 56:23Speaker 5: All right, Joy, this segment is called Get Your Popcorn Ready.
- 56:26Speaker 2: You know me because I love to get my popcorn.
- 56:29Speaker 1: Has this been layered?
- 56:30Speaker 2: No, it has not.
- 56:31Speaker 1: That's why we need a sponsor so we can get
- 56:34Speaker 1: layered popcorn.
- 56:36Speaker 2: Do you use the.
- 56:36Speaker 4: Regular salt or do you like the ranch salt?
- 56:39Speaker 2: I like regular.
- 56:40Speaker 5: I'll ask you a few questions and answer them how
- 56:44Speaker 5: you will.
- 56:44Speaker 2: Who's your favorite comedian?
- 56:47Speaker 4: Chris Spencer.
- 56:48Speaker 1: If I wasn't here, who's.
- 56:50Speaker 2: Your favorite comedian? He's not my favorite comedian.
- 56:58Speaker 1: He knows.
- 56:58Speaker 4: My favorite all-time comedian is old-school Eddie Murphy.
- 57:03Speaker 2: Sure.
- 57:04Speaker 4: Eddie's still funny, but.
- 57:06Speaker 5: You don't see him do stand-up like that anymore, yes.
- 57:08Speaker 4: Yeah, his old-school stand-up is my favorite. I love Kev.
- 57:15Speaker 4: I love Kev on stage. I think he's a great.
- 57:17Speaker 2: Kev on stage is very clever.
- 57:18Speaker 4: Yeah, he's a great market comedian. And he is, like,
- 57:22Speaker 4: church spicy. So he is actually what these clean comedians
- 57:30Speaker 4: are trying to be.
- 57:31Speaker 5: And he gets in trouble for being a little church spicy.
- 57:33Speaker 5: Meaning they expect you to be.
- 57:35Speaker 4: Churchy, no profanity.
- 57:38Speaker 5: I mean, not that he cusses, but his subject matter
- 57:40Speaker 5: is a little bit on the edge of what the
- 57:43Speaker 5: church would like.
- 57:43Speaker 2: He's a heathen.
- 57:45Speaker 4: He's, yes, he's a heathen to the church folk, to
- 57:47Speaker 4: us non-church folk. He's a clean comedian.
- 57:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I like that.
- 57:52Speaker 2: Chris is, yeah, he's funny.
- 57:54Speaker 1: And it's so funny, like, I've seen some stuff, and
- 57:56Speaker 1: I've attended some stuff he didn't even know. Really?
- 57:59Speaker 2: Yeah. And I was like, yo, like, Chris is really funny.
- 58:03Speaker 2: You know what I mean? I always get that. He's
- 58:05Speaker 2: not my favorite. People always get, I always get, I
- 58:07Speaker 2: didn't know you were that funny.
- 58:08Speaker 1: But being around you, you're naturally funny.
- 58:10Speaker 2: I've been doing this for decades. Keep saying I'm not
- 58:11Speaker 2: your favorite, okay?
- 58:13Speaker 4: No.
- 58:14Speaker 1: Shit.
- 58:14Speaker 2: Senator the Entertainer is my favorite. And Bernie Mac.
- 58:17Speaker 4: Yeah, Bernie Mac.
- 58:17Speaker 1: Bernie Mac.
- 58:18Speaker 2: Wow.
- 58:18Speaker 1: Bernie Mac.
- 58:20Speaker 2: Favorite movie? Recent movie.
- 58:23Speaker 4: Recent movie. My all-time favorite movie is Embarrassingly Braveheart.
- 58:26Speaker 2: Oh, well, mine would be The Notebook.
- 58:29Speaker 1: Really?
- 58:30Speaker 2: Yeah, some people are always like, really? When I say
- 58:33Speaker 2: the notebook, he's like, what, really?
- 58:34Speaker 1: And I'm like, yeah. I mean, I know there's some
- 58:36Speaker 1: romantic love elements to it, but it's dear to me
- 58:40Speaker 1: because it touches on Alzheimer's. And my grandmama passed with that.
- 58:44Speaker 4: My grandfather also passed with Alzheimer's.
- 58:46Speaker 2: We have so many commonalities.
- 58:47Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 58:48Speaker 2: I'm going to pay for the first date.
- 58:49Speaker 1: You see that?
- 58:49Speaker 2: I mean, everything.
- 58:52Speaker 4: What's going on here?
- 58:52Speaker 2: What was your favorite show growing up?
- 58:54Speaker 4: Well, to be honest with you, We grew up in
- 58:58Speaker 4: a church house. So I had to sneak off.
- 59:01Speaker 2: What kind of church?
- 59:02Speaker 4: Baptist. So I had to sneak off to watch the
- 59:05Speaker 4: heathen cartoons and stuff.
- 59:06Speaker 2: Baptist church too.
- 59:07Speaker 4: I was a big Nickelodeon kid.
- 59:09Speaker 5: We're too old for Nickelodeon. Yeah.
- 59:12Speaker 4: But what I did watch a lot of is Bruce
- 59:15Speaker 4: Lee movies. My father did let us watch Kung Fu. What?
- 59:20Speaker 4: Kung Fu. Big Kung Fu house. So, yeah.
- 59:23Speaker 2: Everybody was Kung Fu fighting.
- 59:26Speaker 4: I don't think that was that.
- 59:27Speaker 1: I'm not sure.
- 59:28Speaker 2: Maybe they didn't. No, that was a great song, but
- 59:30Speaker 2: that wasn't in the movie. That's what she's trying to say.
- 59:32Speaker 4: It's not in there.
- 59:33Speaker 2: No, I just went there.
- 59:35Speaker 5: Those kicks were fast as lightning. Give us a story
- 59:39Speaker 5: about Joy Taylor that's crazy. Like you dunked on somebody,
- 59:47Speaker 5: but it's true and nobody would believe it.
- 59:50Speaker 4: And I don't know that it's like people wouldn't believe
- 59:52Speaker 4: it happened, but I was financially supporting a.
- 59:58Speaker 2: Boyfriend.
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: And he's on the couch like playing video games and stuff.
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: Like it's been going on for like a month now
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: because I was like, don't worry about it. I got
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: the bills.
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: Yeah, you are sweet.
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: You're a nice.
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: What did I get for that? So I, he's like,
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: I'm like, all right, look, it's, it's been a while.
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: Like we got to get a job, you know? So
- 1:00:22Speaker 4: here's some money. Go out, get a drink, like clear
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: your head.
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: Tomorrow.
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: He couldn't afford a drink.
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: I'm big mama. So he goes out and cheats on
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: me with a stripper with the money that I gave him.
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: Oh, damn. My God. Man, this shit is crazy.
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: But true. Anyway, so I found out.
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: How did you find out?
- 1:00:49Speaker 5: As women do.
- 1:00:50Speaker 4: I knew one of the women that worked in the
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: club because she came and she was a regular at
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: my bar and was bartending. And so she told me,
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: And she was like, girl, I don't want no drama,
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: but your man was up in here. So I asked
- 1:01:04Speaker 4: him about it and he was like, that's not true.
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: We'll go out there right now. I was like, just
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: to be clear, you think I am going with you
- 1:01:14Speaker 4: to a strip club to confront a stripper about you.
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: It's my fault. It's my fault. This is not even
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: your fault. Why wouldn't you think that that's what I
- 1:01:25Speaker 4: would do? Look at me. Why wouldn't I do that?
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: Of course. I'm living wrong. I reinforced this behavior. It's
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: absolutely crazy. You got it. And I left him one
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: broom because we had two brooms. So I took everything
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: and left. It was all my shit anyway, because obviously
- 1:01:40Speaker 4: I was paying for everything.
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: Damn. We just had the same time. Yeah.
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: Do you feel or see a moment, just kind of
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: like just covering, understanding your career where there have been
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: moments of resilience that Like I said, going through the
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: ups and downs, the ebbs and flow of being in media.
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: I know for myself personally, like being in football and
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: having to go through some of the things that I've
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: had to go through, just the media narrative of me being,
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: you know, this type of teammate, people questioning my character
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: and still having to, like you said, be present and
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: still do your job. I think those are some of
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: the things that I went through early on in my career.
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: And then even toward the end that I honestly I
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: had to block out. Because I, you know, just like
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: I said, I grew up in a Baptist church in
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: a household. My grandmama, she always told me, you know,
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: people are going to talk about you good, bad or indifferent.
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: Always just be be true to who you are.
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: Stay true to who you are and just know that
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: you're doing the right thing.
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: Are there any moments or can you share with us
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: those moments of resilience with your career?
- 1:02:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, there's definitely been times when I've had
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: to compartmentalize, I would say, like, you know, the show
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: goes on. whether you're in a good mood or bad
- 1:02:53Speaker 4: mood or you're in a breakup or you've got family
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: issues or you're being talked about in the media. There's
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: all sorts of things that happen throughout your personal life
- 1:03:04Speaker 4: and public life that are really difficult when you're having
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: to go perform. I think for me, it's sort of
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: hard to find peace in those spaces when you can't
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: really you know, really fade into the background. Like when
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: you do have to go and play a game or
- 1:03:20Speaker 4: you do have to go and do a show or,
- 1:03:22Speaker 4: you know, you do have to go sit on a
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: Super Bowl set and be in front of people or,
- 1:03:27Speaker 4: you know, any of those things and give people the
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: same energy and performance that you would if that wasn't happening.
- 1:03:37Speaker 4: it really kind of drains you in a different way
- 1:03:39Speaker 4: than just going through something. That's why I always find
- 1:03:42Speaker 4: it so fascinating when players are able to compartmentalize when
- 1:03:45Speaker 4: they have like a death in the family or, or
- 1:03:48Speaker 4: something like that. Like, how are you, where are you
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: putting all of this energy or this grief or emotions?
- 1:03:55Speaker 4: And yeah, sometimes that's just what life demands of you.
- 1:03:59Speaker 4: I don't think it's any different than, you know, somebody
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: who has to go to a hospital and operate on
- 1:04:03Speaker 4: someone or, you know, a nurse or a teacher, like
- 1:04:06Speaker 4: we all have things we have to do and push through,
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: even though we're struggling with things. So it's, I don't
- 1:04:10Speaker 4: think it's anything special or, you know, unique to people
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: who are in front of the camera to have to compartmentalize.
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: The difference is we have to completely change the tune
- 1:04:23Speaker 4: you know like we don't necessarily you don't necessarily have
- 1:04:25Speaker 4: to make jokes and i mean that like being a
- 1:04:28Speaker 4: comedian like you're you're just because you're dealing with something
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: i mean you can go up there and take it
- 1:04:32Speaker 4: out on the crowd like people are paying to see
- 1:04:35Speaker 4: you and make them laugh so there's something you have
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: to there's some thing you have to do with your
- 1:04:40Speaker 4: brain and your emotions to tap into that um i.
- 1:04:44Speaker 5: Guess is there any specific incidents where you were like
- 1:04:47Speaker 5: okay I'm going to have to be a different person
- 1:04:51Speaker 5: or I'm going to have to be as resilient as
- 1:04:53Speaker 5: possible to deal with this BS that just happened to me.
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: And then all of a sudden it was lights, cameras
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: for you.
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: Oh, for sure. I mean, I've, I've dealt with deaths.
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: I've dealt with obviously a very public situation where I
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: was still on air throughout. I've been divorced. I've gone
- 1:05:13Speaker 4: through a, you know, a engagement breakup. Like I, I
- 1:05:16Speaker 4: don't get like reprieve because that's going on.
- 1:05:19Speaker 5: So I was leading to, and then when you see yourself,
- 1:05:22Speaker 5: can you see yourself doing a.
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: Great job at hiding it? Or can you go, I.
- 1:05:28Speaker 5: Can see on my face right there that I'm a
- 1:05:30Speaker 5: little bit, maybe the audience can't see. Like sometimes if
- 1:05:33Speaker 5: I do a joke or I do a show, people
- 1:05:34Speaker 5: are like, you killed. I go, I didn't kill.
- 1:05:37Speaker 4: Comedians, you guys are crazy.
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: I can't even, I don't even know how you did.
- 1:05:42Speaker 4: You guys never do a good show.
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: No, not me.
- 1:05:45Speaker 4: Okay, well, thankfully. Thank God, because all my comedian friends,
- 1:05:48Speaker 4: I'm like, oh, great show.
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: Yeah, they're all depressed.
- 1:05:51Speaker 4: I'm like, I don't like, why are you talking to me?
- 1:05:52Speaker 4: Don't come over here with that, all right? Like, you
- 1:05:54Speaker 4: did a good show. Take the compliment. I don't give
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: those out like, why do y'all not?
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: Not y'all, them.
- 1:05:58Speaker 4: Them, okay.
- 1:06:00Speaker 5: Because it is a thing.
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: Yes, it is. It's crazy. Have you ever saw yourself
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: and go, oh, look at my face.
- 1:06:05Speaker 4: I know when I do a good show or when
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: I don't do a good show. And it isn't always
- 1:06:08Speaker 4: necessarily because I'm not in a good emotional state. Like,
- 1:06:10Speaker 4: sometimes you just don't have it.
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:06:12Speaker 4: My mom always knew, though. Like when I was going
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: through something, because she watched every show.
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: Wow, that's dope.
- 1:06:17Speaker 4: She would record every show and watch it if it
- 1:06:20Speaker 4: wasn't airing live when she could watch. And so she
- 1:06:24Speaker 4: would always know. Like she'd text me and be like,
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: I know you were crying before the show or like
- 1:06:28Speaker 4: what's going on. So she would always know. I'd be like,
- 1:06:31Speaker 4: I don't, there's nothing going on. She's like, you're lying.
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: Moms always know.
- 1:06:34Speaker 4: They always know. I don't know how they know.
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: It's just that you came from them.
- 1:06:38Speaker 5: When I say hello to my mom, she goes, what's wrong?
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: I go, I just said hello. What's wrong?
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: Yeah, they know.
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: It's like that maternal.
- 1:06:45Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: Well, the last one is four downs, obviously, football.
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: So we're going to ask you four questions.
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: Ask you to keep them short and concise. Yeah, the
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: first one, first down.
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: Out of everybody you've worked with, Joy, who made you
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: laugh the hardest off camera?
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: Probably Paul Pierce.
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: Really? Yeah, he's hilarious. Yeah, Paul is stupid, bro. He's stupid.
- 1:07:13Speaker 4: Paul's hilarious.
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: He's stupid.
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: If you could attend any concert in history, who are
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: you seeing and where are you sitting?
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: Are you like got to be in the front? Sitting
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: is important. Right, exactly.
- 1:07:23Speaker 4: Because the idea came to my head and then I
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: was like, it actually sounds like this would be miserable
- 1:07:28Speaker 4: based off of everything that I represent. But I would
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: want to go to Woodstock. but I would hate the experience.
- 1:07:35Speaker 4: So I'd need to be like right up front probably.
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:07:40Speaker 4: I'm not a, I'm not one of those people that
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: goes to like those types of concerts or festivals, but like, no,
- 1:07:46Speaker 4: I'm not, I'm not a crunchy granola. I'm very much not.
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: And drugs.
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: I do do drugs, but I am not doing crunchy
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: granola stuff.
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: Third and long here.
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: What is one thing about sports media people on the
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: outside would never believe?
- 1:08:01Speaker 4: I think people don't, And this isn't true for everybody,
- 1:08:04Speaker 4: but for the most part, I think people think that
- 1:08:07Speaker 4: sports media people do not do research. And while there
- 1:08:11Speaker 4: are definitely some people who take absolutely no pride in
- 1:08:15Speaker 4: what they're doing and just make mouth noises, most people
- 1:08:19Speaker 4: in the media are doing research. They are watching games.
- 1:08:23Speaker 4: They're like, oh, did you watch the game? No, I
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: didn't watch the NFC Championship.
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:08:29Speaker 4: Okay. Yes, I watched the game. I obviously have a
- 1:08:30Speaker 4: different observation than you have, but obviously I watched the game. So, like,
- 1:08:34Speaker 4: I do think they don't think we do as much
- 1:08:36Speaker 4: research as we do just because they disagree. Although some
- 1:08:39Speaker 4: of us do not. I do, but.
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: Not everybody.
- 1:08:43Speaker 5: Have you ever been sitting next to somebody that didn't
- 1:08:44Speaker 5: do research and you're like?
- 1:08:46Speaker 4: Yeah, I usually have to carry them to the show.
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: Fourth and one.
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: Yeah, fourth and one.
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: We're at the goal line. You didn't score, but.
- 1:08:52Speaker 4: I didn't score.
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: Not yet. Not yet.
- 1:08:54Speaker 5: Oh, we have one more.
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: Fourth and one, fourth and inches. However you want to
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: do it.
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: Um, Last one.
- 1:09:02Speaker 4: Give it to Marshawn.
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: What- You're right. What part of Joy Taylor haven't we
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: seen yet?
- 1:09:09Speaker 4: I would say there's two very polar things that people
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: haven't seen. No one has ever seen me really be
- 1:09:14Speaker 4: mean or crash out. No matter what you've heard, it
- 1:09:18Speaker 4: never happens. I'm very, very- I'm a Capricorn. So, you know,
- 1:09:21Speaker 4: it takes a lot to get me to that point.
- 1:09:25Speaker 4: And I don't like the feeling of really being angry.
- 1:09:29Speaker 4: So I usually don't let myself get to that point.
- 1:09:32Speaker 4: And also the tea is I'm really like a lover girl.
- 1:09:34Speaker 4: I'm really like a sweet, sweet girl. It just, the
- 1:09:37Speaker 4: universe is not providing me a space to do that.
- 1:09:40Speaker 4: So not a lot of people get to see that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:09:45Speaker 4: I mean, when I have- I want you.
- 1:09:46Speaker 5: To be self-proclaimed and I go ask your friends, you're like,
- 1:09:48Speaker 5: she said what?
- 1:09:48Speaker 4: No, no, no, no. They actually don't like that I
- 1:09:51Speaker 4: don't have the opportunity to be that. And I don't
- 1:09:54Speaker 4: want to give that to everybody. That's not naturally who
- 1:09:57Speaker 4: I am to just be sweet to everyone. I think
- 1:10:00Speaker 4: I'm fair. I think I'm polite. But when I have
- 1:10:03Speaker 4: the opportunity to be a real sweet lover, I am.
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: Are you romantic?
- 1:10:08Speaker 4: I'm very romantic, yeah. I like to do, like, I'm
- 1:10:11Speaker 4: a giver. I like to, like, make sure that my
- 1:10:13Speaker 4: person feels taken care of. But it can all be
- 1:10:19Speaker 4: cut off very quickly.
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: I can see it.
- 1:10:22Speaker 4: It's not a lot of room for imperfection.
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: Where the hell you been, Joy?
- 1:10:25Speaker 4: I've been everywhere. You can check me on The Daily
- 1:10:28Speaker 4: Play on Urban One Podcast. It's my daily show. You
- 1:10:31Speaker 4: can follow at The Daily Play Joy Taylor on social
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: or you can listen wherever you listen to podcasts. It's
- 1:10:37Speaker 4: also on YouTube. And then my podcast Too Personal, which
- 1:10:40Speaker 4: you both owe me appearances on now. That's how this
- 1:10:42Speaker 4: business works. And I have something coming out in the fall.
- 1:10:46Speaker 4: We're not entirely... I have an announcement though. A really
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: fun project that I've been working on all summer. And
- 1:10:57Speaker 4: I will come back and talk about it when it
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: comes out.
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: It's coming out this summer?
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: No, it will be out in about a month and
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: a half or so.
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: Joy, we love you. We love your sneakers.
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. We thank you for coming and joining the set.
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: Will you come back again?
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: Okay, we'll have better popcorn. Yeah, definitely. We're going to
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: have some butter.
- 1:11:18Speaker 4: I would like some butter.
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. We're going to have that.
- 1:11:20Speaker 4: And I think I need like a canteen or something.
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: For water. For water.
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: A carafe. Oh, yeah.
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: You should have just sent us your rider.
- 1:11:29Speaker 4: I don't have a rider.
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: You should have just sent us your rider.
- 1:11:32Speaker 5: I don't have a rider.
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: Joy Taylor, ladies and gentlemen.
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: No, it's not a set.
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: Joy.
