- 0:00Speaker 1: Episode 5, Navigating the Aisle's Smart Grocery Shopping and Label Literacy.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Hello and welcome back to The Nutrition Code. I am
- 0:10Speaker 1: thrilled you are here with me for Episode 5. Today,
- 0:14Speaker 1: we are moving practical nutrition into your real life by
- 0:19Speaker 1: mastering the grocery store and developing absolute literacy when reading
- 0:25Speaker 1: food labels. Your nutritional health is largely determined by the
- 0:30Speaker 1: contents of your home, refrigerator, and pantry. If your kitchen
- 0:35Speaker 1: is stocked with nutrient-dense whole foods, eating well becomes effortless.
- 0:41Speaker 1: If your kitchen is stocked with hyperpalatable, ultra-processed snack foods,
- 0:47Speaker 1: maintaining a healthy diet requires an exhausting, daily battle of willpower.
- 0:53Speaker 1: To set yourself up for nutritional success, yes, you must
- 0:57Speaker 1: master the art of smart grocery shopping. Let us walk
- 1:02Speaker 1: through three practical supermarket strategies. Strategy number one is shopping
- 1:09Speaker 1: the perimeter of the store. In almost every conventional supermarket,
- 1:14Speaker 1: the whole, single-ingredient, fresh foods are located around the outer perimeter.
- 1:20Speaker 1: The fresh-produced section, the fish and meat counters, and the
- 1:24Speaker 1: dairy or refrigerated dairy alternative cases. The inner aisles, by contrast,
- 1:31Speaker 1: are typically dominated by ultra-processed packaged foods packed with refined flours,
- 1:38Speaker 1: industrial seed oils, added sugars, and chemical preservatives to maximize
- 1:46Speaker 1: shelf life and hyperpalatable appeal. Make 90% of your shopping
- 1:51Speaker 1: cart come from the outer perimeter. Strategy number two is
- 1:56Speaker 1: mastering label literacy. When you do purchase packaged items from
- 2:01Speaker 1: the inner aisles, never trust the front of the packaging.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Food manufacturers invest millions of dollars in clever marketing claims
- 2:11Speaker 1: on the front of boxes, using buzzwords like natural, organic, multigrain,
- 2:18Speaker 1: or light to create a false aura of health. Turn
- 2:21Speaker 1: the package around immediately and read two things, the ingredient
- 2:26Speaker 1: list and the nutrition facts panel. Rule number three is
- 2:31Speaker 1: understanding the ingredient list. Ingredients are listed in descending order
- 2:36Speaker 1: by weight, meaning the ingredient present in the largest quantity
- 2:41Speaker 1: appears first. If the first three ingredients on a product
- 2:45Speaker 1: label are sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, refined wheat flour, or
- 2:51Speaker 1: hydrogenated oils. That product is candy or processed junk food,
- 2:57Speaker 1: regardless of what health claims are printed on the front
- 3:00Speaker 1: of the box. Look for short, recognizable ingredient lists where
- 3:06Speaker 1: every item is a real food you could buy and
- 3:09Speaker 1: cook yourself. Watch out for hidden sugars. The food industry
- 3:14Speaker 1: uses dozens of different N, aims for sugar to hide
- 3:18Speaker 1: its presence on ingredient lists. including cane juice, maltose, dextrose,
- 3:25Speaker 1: agave nectar, rice syrup, and fruit juice concentrate. By shopping
- 3:30Speaker 1: the perimeter, ignoring front-of-package marketing hype, and reading ingredient lists
- 3:36Speaker 1: with scrutiny, you take absolute control of what enters your body.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Thank you for being here for Episode 5. Read the
- 3:45Speaker 1: ingredient list on three packaged items in your pantry today.
- 3:50Speaker 1: In our sixth and final episode, we will tie everything
- 3:54Speaker 1: together to build a sustainable, joyful nutritional lifestyle. See you there.
