- 0:04Hello, this is Lyle.
- 0:05Welcome to the Christian Business Growth Podcast.
- 0:08Today I'm here with Valerie Pugsley.
- 0:09She's over there.
- 0:10um So Valerie, tell us what made you decide to be an entrepreneur?
- 0:17That is a good question.
- 0:19I had one answer when you first asked me and then I remembered another one.
- 0:23So actually I can go way back to childhood and I remember in um my teens or pre-teens I had some stepsisters and we would, I would make shows.
- 0:36I would direct them and tell them what to do.
- 0:38And then after we practiced and it was good, then we would go around the neighborhood and sell tickets and do a show.
- 0:46out in our front, it's not quite our front yard, we this little space between the house and garage and we'd set up picnic benches and then perform our little show for, you know,
- 0:56a nickel or a quarter or something like that.
- 0:58So it goes way back, but more recently it was when I uh retired from homeschooling.
- 1:07In other words, I graduated both my daughters from homeschooling and was figuring out what to do next.
- 1:13And so that's when I entered into entrepreneurship later in life.
- 1:18later in life.
- 1:19And so you're doing coaching.
- 1:21that correct?
- 1:21Tell us a little bit more about what you do specifically.
- 1:23Yeah, so I do mindset coaching.
- 1:25So when I first started out, I was actually doing marketing, which there's a parallel with us on that.
- 1:32And it, that it changes so fast with all the social media and things all the time.
- 1:37And I was getting overwhelmed with all that.
- 1:39And additionally, I was realizing that I had a lot of mindset issues.
- 1:45kept hearing people talk about mindset.
- 1:47I'm like, well, I think I need help with that.
- 1:49is that?
- 1:50And trying to find somebody who did just that.
- 1:52was
- 1:53there weren't a lot of that are doing just that, right?
- 1:55Right.
- 1:56Now this thing, and then they do the mindset, but I was seeing the mindset as the big, the big piece, the common denominator.
- 2:02And when I would see not only my own self, but in others, the thing holding them back, wasn't the how to do the Facebook ads or the Pinterest post or the, or the whatever.
- 2:14It's the mindset, the stuff that's going on in the gray matter that's holding us back.
- 2:19Give me an example.
- 2:20What's one thing that you've ran into frequently when dealing with people that's that mindset that just takes them off track in their business?
- 2:33So I don't know when, I don't know as you're saying this, like a bunch of things are coming to mind.
- 2:38So if I process it down, I'm going to go approach it from a little different direction.
- 2:43I think the one theme that tends to be like, there's like about three themes that everybody has one of these three, but the one that I see the most, the one that I
- 2:53experienced as well is what I call enoughness.
- 2:56And it's like, I don't have enough time.
- 2:58I don't have enough Lenny.
- 2:59I'm not smart enough.
- 3:01I'm not, it's like,
- 3:02something is not enough.
- 3:04Well, as we're talking to Christians here, yeah, but we serve the creator of the universe who has an abundance.
- 3:12Right.
- 3:13So why are we operating from this place of scarcity and not enoughness versus this abundance?
- 3:20And, and I think as Christians, a lot of times we'll tend to get judgmental on ourselves that I'm not doing this thing or that thing.
- 3:27You start getting into neuroscience and understand
- 3:30the brain works and you see a lot of these are just patterns that were placed in our brains a long time ago.
- 3:36Scripture even tells us be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
- 3:41So as we work on that mindset and change those stories, then we can change the things that move us forward.
- 3:49So I don't know if that exactly answers.
- 3:51That's really good because we have this abundance mentality in the secular world, but we don't realize that comes from God.
- 3:58It's not about the universe lining up with you, it's about God and you aligning together to move forward into the calling you've been called into business.
- 4:06I think it's a powerful thing.
- 4:08Yeah.
- 4:08And I think too with the whole universe thing, I think some of the things that people are discovering or observing are there, right?
- 4:15It's how God designed the universe to work, they're worshiping the creation versus the creator, or they're just looking at the creation as the answer instead of the source.
- 4:28Like they talked about source a lot, right?
- 4:30But the source being the creator of the universe and
- 4:35Yeah, a lot of a lot of the things that you'll run into are scriptural, but they've taken God out of it.
- 4:43Yeah, that makes total sense.
- 4:45So tell me, as you've developed in your business, whether you went from doing shows in the neighborhood into coaching people individually, how has God worked in your life and helped
- 4:57you to make those decisions?
- 4:59Hmm.
- 5:01Make those decisions.
- 5:03I think it's more what I have been growing in the last several years since I've been on this entrepreneurial journey is really trusting.
- 5:14um I call it the leading and guiding of the Holy Spirit, but not in the way that maybe we think of in what I call churchianity and Christian ease.
- 5:26Right.
- 5:27We have our
- 5:29Our ideal idea of I get up at 5am and spend an hour in scripture with my journal and that maybe that if you do that is awesome.
- 5:38Go for it.
- 5:39And I've had seasons in life when I've done that.
- 5:41Don't miss everybody may not be that way.
- 5:44Right.
- 5:44And we have our different times in our different places.
- 5:46But I've come to the conclusion, at least at this point, that
- 5:52If I am, I have an active prayer life, I am in the word, I am in fellowship, I'm in all of these things that the things that are coming to my ideas that come up or the, you know,
- 6:05the heart desires are these things that, all right, let's go with it.
- 6:09That's God's leading incident.
- 6:11is this God's will or, you know, and stressing and struggling over it.
- 6:15Just go even.
- 6:17Even the, you know, you and I are working on a project different from here, right?
- 6:21Even that is just like, uh, and I like, you know what?
- 6:25I just kind of felt like, all right, yeah, go ahead.
- 6:28Move forward with this.
- 6:29Right.
- 6:29And instead of getting all worked up and stressed out and, know, getting into that enoughness thing, right.
- 6:38You know, I think just.
- 6:40trusting that the Spirit is leading and guiding me and if I make a wrong step or if I go the wrong way, He'll redirect me and it's okay.
- 6:49And the things that we're experiencing, it's not necessarily I've done something wrong or there's a sin involved, that this is just another step on the journey and what is it that
- 7:00I need to learn here?
- 7:01What do you want me learn Lord?
- 7:03What's the learning?
- 7:04Looking at it more from kind of an objective non-judgment.
- 7:09perspective, not to say that there isn't judgment, right?
- 7:12Yes, there is.
- 7:13But in the day to day, in the day to day, things forward, going, OK, this didn't go as well as planned.
- 7:21All right.
- 7:21Well, did I have a part in that?
- 7:23um Yeah, I did.
- 7:25I could have done this differently.
- 7:26I could have done that differently.
- 7:28next time, and this is kind of that programming we were talking about earlier, right, where we have old programming and creating new programming, when something doesn't work
- 7:36well, instead of
- 7:39you know, beat ourselves up that it didn't work, yada, yada, yada.
- 7:42It's like, okay, let's, let's just look at the facts.
- 7:45What are the facts?
- 7:46this and this and this.
- 7:47All right.
- 7:48Next time.
- 7:49What do I want to do differently?
- 7:51Okay.
- 7:51Next time I want to do that, that, that, that, Or whatever God puts on our heart next time, do this, that, this, that, as we do that, we are now programming our brain that God
- 8:03created that thing we want to do in the future.
- 8:07Instead of continually beating ourselves up for what didn't work well and repeating that oh, I'm such a this I'm such a that I always this I always that you just programmed into
- 8:18your mind to do that thing again So I feel like I'm going off now rambling, but it's okay.
- 8:25It really is just uh Trusting that God is leading and guiding me that thought that his spirit will move me as I need to be moved if if I
- 8:36go off track and even if I do go off track, did I really go off track?
- 8:41Or is this just one of the steps that I needed to take?
- 8:45Right.
- 8:46Learn the thing that I needed to learn for the next step in the next place that he's taking me.
- 8:52Yeah, you and I talked about self compassion and grace.
- 8:56Tell me a little bit more.
- 8:57I kind of expound that a little bit because we talked a little bit.
- 8:59Yeah.
- 8:59So talk about grace and curiosity a lot.
- 9:03And I'll use actually a video that I have that actually did it.
- 9:06I think it just came out yesterday on my YouTube channel, but about procrastination, right?
- 9:12A lot of people struggle with procrastination.
- 9:15And I talk about procrastination being a signal instead of a character flaw, right?
- 9:21Which is how a lot of us see it.
- 9:23Right.
- 9:24And so understanding that
- 9:28Our brain's job, one of its main jobs is to protect us and keep us safe.
- 9:34So through life, things happen to us, especially in childhood, in our early years.
- 9:40And we go, oh, don't want that to happen again.
- 9:43And so we put mechanisms in place to protect ourselves from making that thing, from keeping that thing to happen again.
- 9:51And different people put in different mechanisms, right?
- 9:53Perception and procrastination.
- 9:55uh
- 9:56Create like over overachievers, right?
- 9:59Part of that is the protection from keeping that thing from happening again.
- 10:05So when we realize that that's just part of the human design, whether by design or the fall, right?
- 10:12One or the other, it's just part of being human.
- 10:16So first of all, when you find yourself in a situation that is less than optimal, you don't like it, whatever, it's like first,
- 10:23Whatever your response is, give yourself grace for being human and now get curious.
- 10:31You know what, what are the causes?
- 10:33And as Christians, I think automatically will tend to go, I send.
- 10:38Maybe you did, but maybe you didn't.
- 10:41Maybe, you know, and I go into it in that video there, there could be other causes that cause to do things or things to go a certain way.
- 10:50But if we just give ourselves grace for being human,
- 10:53And then now get curious.
- 10:54And even in that curiosity for me, a lot of times it involves prayer.
- 10:58You we were talking earlier before the call about the words, our self-talk and our words.
- 11:04As I started changing my self-talk, a lot of times I would recognize something that I didn't want to keep saying.
- 11:10And then I go, okay, but what's the reframe, Lord?
- 11:13I don't know.
- 11:15And he'd give me the reframe, right?
- 11:17And he would turn, he would help me turn it around.
- 11:20So.
- 11:20It's, you know, that's so that's grace and curiosity.
- 11:23Give yourself grace for being human.
- 11:25I now get curious as to what's, what's the solution or what's what what do we do about this current circumstance?
- 11:34Yeah, you and I were talking about a worksheet we were working on.
- 11:37And one of things are when you start to talk to yourself, would you talk to someone else that way?
- 11:42And then I would like to change it based on what you just said is would God talk to you that way?
- 11:49God would never call you stupid or idiot or failure.
- 11:52He would call you his child.
- 11:54I think when we accept that identity as his child, that in and of itself changes the way we think about ourselves and the things we deal with on a daily basis.
- 12:04It can, but not for everybody.
- 12:06Because some people who have used that language and maybe whose parents talked to them that way, they didn't have good parents, they may think that God talks to them that way.
- 12:19Even though he doesn't, right?
- 12:21In scripture, we don't see him talking to his children that way.
- 12:25But that's where sometimes people who have, you know, have traumatic
- 12:33upbringings with either parent, sometimes we superimpose those traits onto God.
- 12:40And that's why we keep talking to ourselves that way.
- 12:46Right.
- 12:46OK.
- 12:47Good point.
- 12:50Good point.
- 12:50And so as we move to our next segment, what are some things you're currently doing that's helping your business grow that might help another Christian entrepreneur grow their
- 12:58business?
- 13:00Hmm, that is a good question.
- 13:04I would say being open to partnerships.
- 13:06Yes.
- 13:07Is is um is one of the things.
- 13:12And um actually, this one might be a little different.
- 13:17I think you'll like it, Lyle.
- 13:20Utilizing AI and I know that can be a scary thing for some people.
- 13:24Some people might think it's bad and whatnot.
- 13:28I'm I am
- 13:29approaching it from a tool and I'm also approaching it from the perspective of um as if these large language learning model, I think that's what it's called.
- 13:41Right.
- 13:42If it's learning, if I'm interacting it, then I'm infusing a little bit of God principles into it.
- 13:48Right.
- 13:50I want to get as much God principles into it as I can.
- 13:52Right.
- 13:53Let it let it come to that.
- 13:55Because who knows what everybody else is putting it.
- 13:57But I
- 13:58I have found using that very helpful.
- 14:01was, recently received a diagnosis from something that I had a suspicion of and creating a business coach that address an AI business coach that operates from that perspective has
- 14:17been very helpful when I get into one of my rabbit trails or spirals or whatever, taking that over to AI.
- 14:27you know, it doesn't totally solve it, but it just, it helps, it helps gather the data, put it in a different perspective, put it in a certain way.
- 14:36like, all right, I still can't quite work with that, but I can work with that, that, and that.
- 14:40Then I give it back, go, I can do this, this, and this.
- 14:42And then it spits something out.
- 14:44And so I would say that's really been helping me a lot with speed and moving things forward.
- 14:50Yeah, and you and I talked a little bit about this, the AI, don't take the first answer you get, push AI a little bit, because the first answer is what's giving everybody in the
- 14:58world.
- 14:59So you've got to push it and identify it to make it fit for you.
- 15:02And again, I love that you said using it as a tool.
- 15:05Some people try to use it as a replacement.
- 15:06If you're just putting something in and copying it and pasting it, you're not doing right.
- 15:10You've got to implement yourself and prayer and God in the whole process.
- 15:16people, let me just verbalize it.
- 15:17Some people are...
- 15:18that say AI is the demon is a demon in the machine and all this stuff.
- 15:21It's a tool just like any other tool.
- 15:23It can be redeemed or it can be skewed.
- 15:28And the other thing with that is if you choose to use it, being more specific, not necessarily not specific in like giving it uh secure data.
- 15:41No, don't ever do that.
- 15:42Right.
- 15:43You tell it your phone number, your security number.
- 15:45You not know your first name.
- 15:47Right.
- 15:47But but giving it more being more specific, more context, the more the more information you give it and then
- 15:55the one particular one that I use that I pay for and it gives me access to a whole bunch of them is I get to have a stream.
- 16:02And so it starts to get to know my voice.
- 16:05And so it starts to give me outputs that are in aligned with who I am and it's me and it's not the AI.
- 16:13It's just, know, grammar and spelling and all that is not my forte.
- 16:17I can talk to you all day long.
- 16:20So it helps with those kinds of things.
- 16:24Back to the context, wanting to make sure you give it enough detail.
- 16:27If you don't give it enough detail, it's going to give you a very generic, bland answer.
- 16:33And so yes, that back and forth conversation in detail and context.
- 16:37Yeah.
- 16:37And just for those who don't know, if you're not into AI very much, you can actually, if you have a video on YouTube, you can put that video into your chat bot, your AI and say,
- 16:47identify the brand voice and write from this brand voice.
- 16:51And it'll identify the way you talk as far as you use short sentences, big sentences, big words, small words, all that kind of fun stuff.
- 16:59So Valerie, how can someone get in touch with you?
- 17:03Well, uh, there's Well if they need help with mindset so the best way would be to go to Val cares calm forward slash links I hope it's links.
- 17:18That's either link or links
- 17:21We'll put it below this video just in case.
- 17:23Yeah, yeah.
- 17:24Anyway, yeah, I'm pretty sure it's links.
- 17:27And on there, there's a link to uh some various free items that I have.
- 17:32And also a link to my calendar, they can reach out if they are to the point where they want to explore coaching and they can schedule a call there.
- 17:42Great.
- 17:42And I've got a kind of tidbit here.
- 17:45The diagnosis she found out that she may have is ADHD and a lot of people struggle with that.
- 17:50So one of the things she and I is partnering up with is helping ADHD entrepreneurs.
- 17:54And so if you go to Quick Brains Team, that could be Quick Brains Team or Quick Brains Steam, either way, we're okay with it.
- 18:01You're gonna find that we have a challenge kicking out fairly soon.
- 18:04And if you miss the challenge, that's okay.
- 18:07We're gonna have a community.
- 18:08We're gonna build out on that specifically to help.
- 18:10those with an ADHD brain because God created our brain just like it's supposed to be.
- 18:14Let's use it to the best ability the way God created us.
- 18:18Val, give us one little tidbit as you finish up what's one thing you want to leave us with.
- 18:26I I'm going to leave you with the same thing I left to another podcast recently.
- 18:32asked about, because I'm big on words, words have meaning.
- 18:36Scripture even tells us that, right?
- 18:38Life and death are in the power of the time.
- 18:40And there's a word that I hear Christians use a lot, especially when they're in a difficult uh situation.
- 18:49So actually, as I'm thinking about it, I'm going to give you two.
- 18:52So in this difficult situation, a lot of times we'll pray,
- 18:56Oh, all I can do is just pray.
- 19:01That is my pet peeve.
- 19:04Get rid of the word just.
- 19:08When we do that, we are minimizing who God is.
- 19:13What we are getting to do is going into the throne room, thinking back to Esther, the throne room of the creator of the universe to present our request.
- 19:23It's not a just.
- 19:24This is the absolute.
- 19:25best thing to do.
- 19:29And to tag onto that, I will also add that a lot of times as Christians, we'll give our laundry list of the things that we want.
- 19:37And then we say, but whatever your will, and we kind of get that little down tone and the shoulders go down and we get into that, that, that minimal thing instead of that abundance
- 19:47thing.
- 19:47And in a very difficult season back in 2019, God gave me a twist on a verse as a prayer.
- 19:55And whenever I can share it, do.
- 19:57And it's God, I trust and I ask you to do exceedingly abundantly beyond anything I can ask or imagine.
- 20:07Now insert whatever the thing is, the person you're concerned about and praying for, the situation that you're dealing with, whatever, add that.
- 20:16Now you're coming from a place of standing back and watching God.
- 20:21You've reminded yourself who God is, right?
- 20:24Trusting him.
- 20:25And he, yeah, we have our ideas, but he's got even bigger, better ones.
- 20:31And that just released the stress for me and puts me in a position of just watching and seeing what God's going to do.
- 20:39Great.
- 20:39Thank you for sharing those.
- 20:41Those are very insightful.
- 20:42I've loved getting to know you a little bit better and I look forward to working with you and helping a lot of people with some fun brains.
- 20:52Yes.
- 20:53Bye.
